Sequoia Grove

8338 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 944-2945

Why Guests Love It: Classic Cabernets, Boutique Feel, Food & Wine Pairings

Sequoia Grove is almost the little engine that could in Napa, not because it’s any less mighty but because it’s lowkey and relaxed. It’s definitely worth stopping in, though, because the wood-timber building surrounded by sequoias and cypresses gives a distinctive Northern Californian feel. Everything produced is fantastic but take note of the quintessential cedar notes in their Cabs. They’re a standout.

Grgich Hills

1829 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 963-2784

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Picnic Tastings, Eco-Focused

Named after its founders, Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, Grgich Hills is one of the more legendary wineries in Napa. Founded in 1977, it has consistently produced stellar wines to be tasted in an equally stellar stone building. Bonus: As of 2006, it uses only estate-grown fruit from its organic, biodynamic, and solar powered winery.

Corison Winery

987 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-0826

Why Guests Love It: Critically Acclaimed Wines, Female Winemaker, Vineyard Views

True trailblazers seem in short supply these days but thankfully Cathy Corison is still here. Year in and year out, she crafts award-winning Cabs from specific vineyard designations. She also produces a stunning Gewürztraminer and Riesling, both of which sing when paired with food. Be sure to snap up what you can because her wines consistently sell out.

401 St Helena Hwy South, St Helena

(707) 967-2626

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Artwork, Female Winemaker, Exceptional Wines

If the whimsical rabbit sculpture isn’t enough to make you stop, the wines most certainly will! Kathryn Hall comes by her craft genetical, having worked in her family’s vineyards north in Mendocino before striking out on her own. And although the Cabs are fabulous, cross the varietal line and taste their Merlots. You’ll be wowed.

The Salon at Heitz Cellar

436 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-2047

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Cheese & Charcuterie Boards, Age-Worthy Wines

Freemark Abbey

3022 St Helena Hwy N, St Helena

(800) 963-9698

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Stunning Architecture, Library Wines

Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to 1899, Freemark Abbey has consistently been a winery for over a century (except that during that little hiccup known as Prohibition). It further cemented its name in oenological history by being one of only twelve wineries invited to compete in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Today, the wines remain standouts and tasting here brings guests on a trip through Napa history.

Sterling Vineyards

1111 W Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga

(800) 726-6136

Why Guests Love It: Breathtaking Views, Tram Rides, Award Winning Wines

Sterling Vineyards unfortunately sustained significant damage during the Glass Fire of 2020 and has since been undergoing reconstruction. The good news for everyone is that it is due to reopen in the Spring of 2023! Sterling has been a longtime favorite because of the stunning views. Plan ahead to book a tour that includes a tram ride to the top of the vista point and sip through their lineup. It’s worth the wait.

Tank Garage Winery

1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga

(707) 942-8265

Why Guests Love It: Art Deco Architecture, Intriguing Wines, Small Production

Of all wine tasting experiences through Napa, Tank Garage is probably the most unique because it’s located in a 1930s Art Deco gas station! Tank isn’t for the faint-of-heart – the people there are known for sprinkling salty language around, but they sure provide a fun experience. The wines are just as interesting with everything from orange pét-nat to carbonic Grenache.

Top Napa Wineries along the Silverado Trail

Silverado Trail runs somewhat parallel to St Helena Highway on the east side of Napa. The two are close enough together to make it very easy to toggle between, but Silverado is decidedly quieter because village centers are found on St Helena Highway.

Chateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena is the perfect start to a day of winetasting. Clos Pegase Winery

1060 Dunaweal Ln, Calistoga

(707) 942-4981

Why Guests Love It: Sleek Architecture, Quirky Sculptures, Cave Tours

Honig Vineyard & Winery

850 Rutherford Rd, Rutherford

(707) 963-4272

Why Guests Love It: Eco Tours, Sustainable Winery, Fabulous Whites

Honig means ‘honey’ in German, which is denoted with the whimsical bees on Honig labels. And, Honig is true to its love of bees by being certified sustainable and solar powered. Book the Eco tour to learn all about Honig’s green practices before tasting through some beautiful wines, including their Sauvignon Blanc.

8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford

(800) 686-6272

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Classic Sparkling Wine, Cheese Pairings

Is it bubbly time yet? Mumm Napa provides the best of French winemaking and Napa views. Guests can choose to taste through the delightful sparkling wines in a variety of settings, from patio seating to terrace tasting with cheese pairings.

8383 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 963-5188

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Organic Farming, Warm Hospitality

Although technically in another town, ZD is just down the road from Mumm and is definitely worth the stop. While ZD may be smaller than some of the huge Napa wineries, it is no less impressive and produces rich, luscious wines that manage to maintain perfect balance. Taste through the lineup, or book a tour with sample of library wines.

Quixote Winery

6126 Siverado Trail, Napa

(707) 944-2659

Why Guests Love It: Historic Winery, Beautiful Views, Exceptional Service

Stags’ Leap is another legendary Napa winery and is a must for those wanting to taste through the best the valley has to offer. Indulge in a porch tasting to experience the stunning views alongside the stunning wines. And, be sure to grab a bottle of Petite Sirah, which is a perennial favorite among critics.

Clos du Val Winery

5330 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 261-5212

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Views, Creative Events, High End Hospitality

Clos du Val is nestled back among the vines, providing a picturesque experience for visitors. Book a tasting in advance, or check out events like Apéro nights, or sparkling wine brunches. No matter what you try, you’ll love the attention to detail that weaves through both the wines and the estate.

4240 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-2345

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Luxurious Pairings, Exceptional Service

Darioush is sort of like Madonna or Cher in that it needs no other name: Darioush is enough. And, for those that know it, the name Darioush means opulence and grandeur unlike anything else in Napa. Grounded in Persian culture, hospitality is elevated to an art form here. Be sure to reserve the Signature Mezza tasting to try the wines alongside traditional Persian mezze plates.

Judd’s Hill Winery & MicroCrush

2332 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 255-2332

Why Guests Love It: Small Production, Family Owned, Relaxed Environment

Judd’s Hill is an anomaly in Napa because it’s lowkey and very hands on. Still family owned, guests are encouraged to book tastings, pairings, or even play winemaker and blend their own wines! Another charming experience is their annual poetry contest, for which winners receive a 3-liter bottle but the real prize is being part of this 20+ year tradition.

Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs

1507 Lincoln Ave, Calistoga

We can’t say enough about Calistoga, the often overlooked village at the north end of Napa. It’s quaint, it’s cool, and it’s got an unbeatable vibe. Dr. Wilkinson’s is the epitome of Calistoga. It’s got such a throwback quality that we can’t help but love it. Whether you want a swim in a mineral pool, an indulgent mud bath, or a frolic on a tree swing, Dr. Wilkinson’s has you covered.

Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa

Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). You can check current flight deals into either airport right here.

Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. Another great option is to leverage Green Dream Tours’ expertise to get a taste of both Napa and Sonoma on the same day. They offer round-trip transport from San Francisco, stopping at some exceptional boutique wineries in Sonoma and Napa.

Our Previous Guests’ Experiences

Tripadvisor reviews.

We appreciated getting an overview of what to look for and expect on the following days. Paul was a great tour guide and really made the trip even more enjoyable.

The best part was driving around Napa in the open-air trolley and hearing our guide Richard give us facts about the land. It was interesting and very scenic. I can’t imagine doing a wine tour on a bus when you can do this instead!

Great way to see multiple wineries in one day without having to plan meals and all the visits ourselves. Wineries were great, food and wine were amazing, the trolley was a fun way to travel.

Definitely recommend it if you are visiting for the first time. It’s a great way to visit a few wineries worry-free!

Mallory Shull

This was my very favorite experience in Napa! The trolley was such a fun way to see more of Napa Valley and truly experience different wineries (and not worry about driving!! :-))

The 14 Best Wineries in Napa, According to Wine Experts

The top wineries in Napa to swirl and sip.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

napa wine tasting tour

Courtesy of Palmaz Vineyards

Oenophiles have been making the pilgrimage to Napa Valley since the 1970s. Encompassing the city of Napa, as well as quaint towns like Rutherford, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga, this epicurean hot spot has gained even more notoriety in recent years as accomplished winemakers and luxury hotels continue to move in.

Despite the influx of buzzy things to see and do — including dining at Michelin-starred restaurants and riding a scenic train by Napa's verdant vineyards — the biggest draw continues to be the wine. And it’s not just about going to the store and picking up a bottle. The whole reason people visit Napa Valley is to savor red , white , and rosé at spectacular wineries , many set on massive vineyards, where the grapes go from vine to glass on the premises (or nearby). But with more than 400 wineries in Napa Valley, the options are almost dizzying. That’s why we’ve consulted with experts, including tastemakers in wine country, to narrow it down to the 14 best wineries in Napa for a tasting. (Just be sure to book in advance as most of our picks require reservations.)

Faust Wines, Coombsville

"The newly unveiled  Faust Haus , a Napa Valley tasting room in St. Helena, is a luscious, black-velvet dreamscape at 2867 St. Helena Highway," Celine Bossart, a sommelier and wine writer, reported for T+L . "The historic hilltop home is whimsical in its starkness, unabashedly Gothic and freshly coated in a shade of inky black paint that only a certain kind of house can pull off." The venue alone is worth the visit, but the wine is just as enticing. In true Napa fashion, Faust's cabernet sauvignon packs a punch, but don't let the merlot-haters in "Sideways" keep you from trying The Lure merlot, which is just as intriguing as the cab sauv and the winery's approachable syrah. Bossart says of the winery on the southern edge of Napa Valley in Coombsville, "Faust Haus is one of Napa’s warmest, most welcoming, and visually striking places to taste wine."

Frog's Leap Winery, Rutherford

Emma K. Morris

Rooted in sustainable, dry-farming practices and traditional winemaking techniques, Frog's Leap produces balanced, terroir-driven wine that continually earns accolades from critics and casual drinkers. Surrounded by 200 acres of vines, the Vineyard House porch is an utterly enchanting setting to enjoy a flight of classics, new releases, or rare vintages, paired with a tasty complimentary snack plate. Grab a glass of your favorite wine for a walk through the organic gardens and fruit orchards.

Tres Sabores, St. Helena

Briana Marie Photography

Family-run, female-led, and dog-friendly Tres Sabores feels like what we’d assume Napa was all about a few decades ago: a dedication to agriculture, the craft of winemaking, and enjoying the fruits of that labor in a beautiful, natural environment. The owner and winemaker, Julie Johnson, will happily show you around the 35-acre estate that spans old vines, gardens, and olive groves and sit down for a tasting (the Burgundian-style zinfandel is particularly memorable) and seasonal lunch afterward.

Realm Cellars, Napa

Courtesy of Realm

If you are in the mood for highly addictive wine, praised by the in-the-know Napa wine community, Realm Cellars in Napa is an obvious choice. The folks at Realm are currently releasing library wines — a rarity and a treat, because it means you get to take home an aged bottle, instead of a newly bottled vintage you have to let sit in your wine fridge for four years. Now, admittedly, these releases are in response to losing the vineyard's 2020 crop to the wildfires that tore through Napa Valley. And yet, Realm saw it as an opportunity to release wines dating back to 2009. That's the kind of innovation you can expect from this vineyard. While Realm's tasting room is still closed as a result of the 2020 wildfires, find these bottles in wine bars and restaurants around town — and let that round out your wine-tasting experience.

Jacob Brown, beverage director at Lazy Bear restaurant in San Francisco, suggests you sip Realm Cellars The Bard — the winery's best seller — at Napa's Torc restaurant. "At Torc, they have a secret menu item (shhhh) of a truffle grilled cheese — get it with a glass of Realm Cellars The Bard," Brown says. "I was fortunate to try this pairing recently, and I have not stopped dreaming about it since. The way The Bard makes the fontina val d’Aosta cheese with Perigord truffles humm is worth the trip to Napa alone."

Tamber Bey Vineyards, Calistoga

Katharina Esterline/EyeEm/Getty Images

Set in the middle of a working horse ranch in off-the-beaten-path Calistoga, family-run Tamber Bey Vineyards offers one of the most unique experiences around. The focus is on wine first, but the owners’ love for all things equestrian adds a wonderfully rustic charm that’s endearing. Guests can tour the production facility, which was originally a covered riding arena, and do a wine and savory cookie pairing in the courtyard of the stables.

Amulet Estate, St. Helena

Courtesy of Amulet Estate

" Amulet Estate  is a brand that embraces the fundamental essence of Napa Valley - a commitment to the highest quality of wines, beginning with curated relationships with some of the most reputable Napa Valley growers, capturing quality in the vineyard and expressing the unique terroir of each site," Emily Rodriguez, the program operations manager at Napa Valley Vintners , tells T+L.

The St. Helena portfolio is known for their expansive cab sauv portfolio, but you'll stay for the chardonnay, with grapes sourced from the Sonoma coast. Rodriguez recommends booking the winemaker-led, private experiences on offer, because they "allow guests to truly appreciate the care and attention that goes into every bottle of wine, while enjoying the peace and privacy of their hillside estate."

 AXR Napa Valley, St. Helena

AXR Napa Valley is a pre-Prohibition estate with a fairy circle of redwoods in the heart of St. Helena. So, from a history and scenery perspective, it’s pretty enchanting. The juxtaposition between heritage and the modern, boutique atmosphere makes for a memorable visit. Winemaker and partner Jean Hoefliger puts his heart and soul into crafting wine. Visitors can sample the flagship lineup and new releases in the main house, private veranda, or outdoor patio.

Cliff Lede Vineyards, Yountville

Conrad J Camit/Getty Images

A gem where winemaking, art, and music coalesce, Cliff Lede Vineyards ranks among the most entertaining estates in Napa Valley. A larger-than-life Two Hearts sculpture stands in the courtyard. Rotating exhibits adorn the walls of the tasting lounge. Vine blocks brandish the names of famous songs like “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Whole Lotta Love.” Aesthetically, it’s a hit with the Instagram crowd. But the wine very much holds its own, especially the flagship Poetry cabernet sauvignon.

Darioush, Napa

Courtesy of Darioush

Led by Shahpar and Darioush Khaledi, Darioush aims to bring Persian winemaking culture to Napa . Their cabernet franc, viognier, pinot noir, and merlot all draw travelers in — especially the oenophiles looking to go beyond cabernet sauvignon sipping. But one of the best experiences you can have at Darioush, which truly sets it apart, is the Culture Wine Lunch.

Eduardo Dingler, vice president of wine at Wine Access , says, "The welcoming hospitality, curated setting, amazing wines, and dare I say, the Michelin-star level of cuisine made the Culture Wine Lunch a highly memorable experience. I’ve been a fan of Darioush wines for years, so pairing them with chef Massey’s world-inspired dishes, with his attention to detail and high-quality ingredients, was simply delightful."

Alpha Omega, St. Helena

Suzanne Becker Bronk/Courtesy of Alpha Omega

Since opening in 2006, Alpha Omega has forged on with a sustainable and quality-over-quantity mindset. Its annual production of 15,000 cases is far less than that churned out by big-name wineries each year. The result? Super-expressive Bordeaux-style wines that taste like the true essence of the land and are best enjoyed on the sunny St. Helena tasting room terrace while gazing at the burbling fountains and Mayacamas Mountains in the distance.

Palmaz Vineyards, Napa

Tucked away on a 600-acre estate a few miles outside of downtown Napa, Palmaz Vineyards proudly fuses tradition and technology. The rolling vineyard landscape is stunning, but the coolest part has to be the private guided tour of the massive, multilevel wine cave, which extends into the rock of Mount George. The innovative gravity-flow winemaking process results in a smooth, nuanced cabernet sauvignon that goes down almost too easily.

Beringer Vineyards, St. Helena

Courtesy of Beringer Vineyards

Beringer Vineyards is a place steeped in firsts. It was one of the first to operate using hand-dug caves and cellars, and the first to give public tours back in 1934. It’s also a great first stop for newcomers to wine country . (The knowledgeable staff will teach you the ins and outs of tasting and happily answer any questions.) Of course, longtime Napa visitors will also appreciate the warm hospitality and impressive array of quality pours.

Cakebread Cellars, Rutherford

Rocco Ceselin

Even with so many other notable grape varietals popping up, Cabernet Sauvignon remains king in Napa Valley. Located along the iconic Highway 29 wine route, Cakebread Cellars has a very notable reputation for producing this widely recognizable homegrown favorite, in addition to excellent chardonnay. The wine and tasting experience — whether you prefer to sip in the charming countrified rooms or outdoor courtyard — is consistently stellar. Guided tours of the winery and grounds are also available.

Honig Vineyard & Winery, Rutherford

A leader in sustainability, Honig does a wonderful job of making eco-friendly winemaking palatable to a broad audience — and we mean that quite literally. This family-owned Rutherford winery employs a host of environmentally responsible practices, from managing water use to solar power to employing wooly weeders (sheep as natural lawn mowers). Tour the sustainably farmed vineyard to see how things are done before sitting down for a biodynamic flight on the shaded garden patio.

I had the opportunity to play tourist in my own backyard yesterday. We live in Sonoma County, but decided to do something out of the ordinary and take a tour through Sonoma with some friends via the Sidecar Tours, Inc. Our tour started outside of Sonoma at the Viansa winery. We met Mario and his other two drivers, Dave and Kelly. Mario gave us a thorough briefing of the days events, along with some safety tips and explanation of these beautiful sidecars. To be honest, a couple people in our group were a bit apprehensive about riding in the sidecars. These worries were quickly extinguished, upon seeing them close up. They're large, big enough to fit two people with ample room. A friend of ours is 6'5" and he fit comfortably with his wife. Helmets and goggles were provided as well. The ride was surprisingly smooth. Besides the scenic tour, we stopped at two wineries. The tasting fee and scheduling were included in the price. We started out our tasting at a wonderful winery, Homewood. I would never have discovered this fabulous winery if it weren't for Sidecar Tours. We were in awe at the presentation and taste of the wines offered, but that's another Yelp review. After our tasting, we took a scenic drive to the city of Sonoma, where we stopped at the picturesque city hall for some photos and learned a bit more about our guides. After this stop, we then drove to our final stop, again at Viansa. Viansa is a gorgeous setting, sitting atop a hill overlooking the plains outside Sonoma. Again, more tasting and a charcuterie board was included. Throughout our tour, we kept saying how amazing this tour was and how we want to book again. Mario, Kelly and Dave were awesome guides. They were very personable and there to help. There is also an extra package where you can get a GoPro video of your day. I received my video the next day. FYI, there is enough room in the basket, in back of the sidecars, to fit plenty of wine that you'll purchase during your stops. Finally, as this tour says Napa Valley, as we did...you can also travel through Sonoma. Don't hesitate to book this tour. It's a unique experience that'll bring lasting memories.

Had one of the funnest experiences going on Temecula Sidecar beer tours with our large group of 21. The drivers are incredibly safe, outgoing and definitely entertaining! They drove us throughout the Temecula area and we stopped at three beer breweries. Nothing better than spending the day outdoors riding on a bike and drinking beer. This is a wonderful experience for large groups or individuals. Perfect for bachelor and bachelorette parties too. If you are in need of a bilingual driver ask for Angel. He is great! Overall a great time. Will absolutely do it again.

Living in SF means that frequent trips to Napa are the norm. That being said, I thought I was privvy to all the different types of tours in the valley being offered...but I somehow missed Sidecar Tours! It's exactly as it sounds. Our urban tour of Napa consisted of 2 winery visits and 1 distillery, all from the comfort of...you guessed it. A sidecar of a motorcycle. If you're a Napa newbie, allow JD or Isaac to take the wheel and chauffeur you around the city. You'll cruise to different vineyards and ride through Napa proper back to the distillery you started at. If you're a Napa native/connoisseur, allow JD or Isaac to take the wheel offer the experience of riding in a side car while picking up your next wine shipment. It's exhilarating and you get to enjoy the views from a different perspective. My only complaint is that we couldn't spend all day with the crew! If you can plan it, definitely time your tour to end around sunset. Riding off into the Napa sunset on a sidecar is an experience I'm going to remember for a long time.

Ron was fabulous! He always made sure things were going smoothly. It was a little chilly that morning, so he had a blanket for us which I highly appreciated. (It warmed up quickly after that first ride.) He was always very kind! We had such a wonderful time. We would def do it again.

The Perfect Napa Valley Wine Tasting Day Trip Itinerary

As a first timer in Napa, there are some popular wineries that should be at the top of your list.

I recommend choosing 3 wineries at the very most because that’s all that you’ll be able to fit into one day.

1. Domaine Carneros Winery

Our first stop we decided on was Domaine Carneros and it was amazing!

We arrived at 11 am and left around 1 pm.

We sampled whites and reds and then chose our favorite to take home.

Domaine Carneros is known more for its bubbly drinks (which I don’t care for), but our favorite was a Pinot Noir, which just so happens to be JP’s favorite kind of wine.

2. Castello di Amorosa

Just like the name says, this is a CASTLE!

What better place to do a wine tasting than in a castle?!

This was one of my favorite finds on any trip we’ve ever done because it was so unique from any winery we had ever been to.

You get to do a self-guided tour of the castle and then as you make your way to the cellars you can choose an area to do your wine tasting.

They had a big open room, a couple smaller nooks, and some private wine tasting rooms.

We once again sampled some reds and whites and then took home a bottle of our favorite wine.

This wine was definitely the most unique of all the wines we’ve ever purchased.

It was called La Fantasia , but I don’t recall what kind of wine it was.

It was very pink though, kind of like the Barefoot Pink Moscato.

We arrived just before 3 pm and stayed until a little after 4 pm.

3. Spire Collection

This one we actually did the following day because we ran out of time on the first day.

We did a private wine tasting and actually picked out a few bottles of wine to bring home.

A couple we bought as gifts though, so we still just had our one favorite from this tasting.

This place had the best Chardonnay I have ever tasted in my life.

It was a more buttery texture than others I’ve tried and that’s what made it stand out.

It was Wind Racer 2015 Russian River Valley Chardonnay if you want to try it out!

During our tasting we were able to pick out our own music to listen to and we took a tour around the vineyards.

It was such a nice day out, so it was good to get out and walk around.

In addition to the regular 5-6 wines you normally get at a tasting, we were able to sample a few more once we narrowed down our favorites.

It was a great experience and I highly recommend doing a wine tasting like this some time if you’re able.

We visited the Spire Collection in Calistoga which was about an hour from our hotel, but there is another location in Alexander Valley which is about 20 minutes farther out.

4. Ledson Winery

They open at 10 AM for their first tastings.

We went on a Friday in December and we were the only ones there at opening.

Here there are 2 options for the standard tasting – the Winemakers’ Selection for $45 and the Classic Selection for $35 .

These are much more expensive than wine tastings in other areas of California like Solvang or Temecula, but it is very on brand for the Napa and Sonoma Wine Valley region.

Since we like to try as much as possible, we decided to do one of each.

There was a 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon not on the tasting list that we also tried that was part of a more exclusive selection.

It was our favorite wine there and also the most expensive, by a lot.

But we bought it as a gift, so it’s okay that it was more expensive.

I want to say it was something like $160 or so.

At every tasting if there is a stand out wine to us, we like to buy at least one bottle.

I think maybe 60%-75% of the time we walk away with one bottle.

The rest is pretty even split with not buying any bottles OR sometimes we’ll buy like 3 different bottles!

The gift shop area also had some homemade wine brownies, so I bought one of those.

Some to-go charcuterie boards, lots of wines, and wine accessories were available as well.

The Classic Selection

  • 2017 Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc (a $24 bottle)
  • 2019 Sonoma Valley ‘Estate Vineyard’ Chardonnay (a $32 bottle)
  • 2017 Mendocino Ridge ‘Ciapusci Old Vine’ Zinfandel (a $32 bottle)
  • 2017 Sonoma County Merlot (a $36 bottle)
  • 2017 Dry Creek Valley ‘October Moon Vineyard’ Malbec (a $42 bottle)

The Winemakers’ Selection

  • 2018 Sonoma Coast ‘Grove Vineyard’ Viognier (a $40 bottle) (94 pts)
  • 2017 Russian River Valley ‘Dutton Ranch’ Chardonnay (a $44 bottle) (94 pts)
  • 2017 Anderson Valley ‘Adeline’s Vineyard’ Pinot Noir (a $48 bottle)
  • 2017 Dry Creek Valley ‘Estate Old Vine’ Zinfandel (a $40 bottle)
  • 2017 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon (a $48 bottle)

5. Chateau Montelena

Our next stop was also solely chosen due to the iconic building.

How could you not visit a place that looks like this?

We booked this tasting for around noon.

There are a few different levels of tastings you can do, but we just did the standard tasting.

I was very tempted to do the next level semi-private tasting of their library wines, but we were splurging on so many other things throughout the trip, that I didn’t feel like we also needed to splurge more on this.

Maybe next visit though!

Chateau Montelena is VERY popular and you’ll definitely need a reservation in advance.

Their tastings are all done at the bar in small groups.

We had maybe 8-10 people in our group for this tasting.

Here everyone does the same tasting.

We usually like to share one tasting if we can (unless they have multiple tasting options), but everything here is done per person, so we each did our own tasting.

The wines here are done European Style as opposed to how most California wineries make their wines.

So I think the problem we had here was that our palettes aren’t really accustomed to those wines as much, so they didn’t stand out to us as much as strong flavors that we like.

I think if we try more European wines, we’ll enjoy these selections more in the future, but at the time of this tasting, they weren’t our favorites.

So we unfortunately didn’t buy any wines at this wine tasting.

A Taste of Montelena

  • 2019 Chardonnay, Napa Valley (a $70 bottle)
  • 2018 Zinfandel, Montelena Estate (a $40 bottle)
  • 2016 Zinfandel, Napa Valley (a $45 bottle)

In addition to the above wines, they have a rotating schedule of “Featured Wine Selection of the Day”.

During our visit, it was a 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Montelena Estate (a $185 bottle).

Where to Eat During Your Napa Day Trip

An equally important aspect of your Napa Valley day trip itinerary is where you’re going to eat.

I highly recommend stopping in Yountville for either lunch or dinner.

They have so many great restaurants, including the legendary French Laundry .

On both of our previous Napa day trips, we came to Yountville for food and snacks.

Bouchon Bakery

This place is in Yountville, California and is about a 20 minute drive away from Domaine Carneros.

Bouchon Bakery is one of several dining locations by celebrity chef Thomas Keller (no relation by the way).

I used to have a Disney children’s cookbook with recipes inspired by the movie Ratatouille.

One of the signature recipes in this book was Chocolate Bouchons by Thomas Keller.

I made them a handful of times and LOVED them!

Ever since, I’ve been wanting to go to one of his places, but needed a more affordable option.

This is how we decided my birthday treat would be Bouchon Bakery.

We picked a few things to sample that looked good and then enjoyed them out on a picnic table.

The chocolate bouchons are below if you’re curious what they look like.

Bouchon means “cork” in French, so they’re made to resemble corks like you’d see in wine bottles.

This place gets very busy, so be prepared to wait in line or go right as they open.

I’m not sure what time we arrived but I know by 2 pm we had our food and we sat for about 15 minutes or so.

RH Yountville

It’s sort of half indoors / half outdoors in a greenhouse type atmosphere that was just really pleasant for dining.

We started off with some Garlic Aioli French Fries (they also have Truffled Fries).

For my meal, I had the Fusilli Pasta , which I didn’t realize was a pesto based dish, but I still enjoyed it for what it was (pesto is not my fave).

JP had the Shaved Ribeye on Charred Garlic Bread .

His was very nice and melty, and even better when dipped in the Au Jus .

Another dish I would’ve loved to try is the Truffled Grilled Cheese and even the Lobster Roll .

Most of the entrees here are in the $20-$30 range, with the exception of the Ribeye Steak which is like $60.

Sides are all $9-$12, except for the Truffle Fries, which are about double.

The salads are all $15-$20 and the appetizers are about $20-$25, but they are all supposed to be portions “for the table”.

The exception is Prosciutto and Delice Board, which is a whopping $43!

We didn’t get dessert here, so I can’t say much about that, but just up the street is an iconic bakery, so I recommend waiting to get dessert there!

Pizza in Calistoga

Calistoga is only about 5-10 minutes up the road from Castello di Amorosa.

For the life of me I cannot find what place we ate at for lunch in Calistoga even though there aren’t that many pizza to choose from.

All I know is that it was on the main street and it was yummy.

I tried looking it up on Google Maps and can’t find anything!

I have a bunch of photos from this place though because the walls made the photos look like Renaissance paintings!

JP didn’t know I was taking these photos until he looked over.

We were only here from about 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Get Your Photo With The Napa Valley Welcome Sign

The last important piece of your Napa Valley day trip itinerary is this sign.

This sign is so iconic, so make sure you set aside some time to get some photos here.

This was the last thing we did before going back to our hotel at the end of the day.

If you’re an early riser, it might be better to do this before the wineries start to open at 10 am.

You may also be wondering, is Napa or Sonoma better to visit?

We have a full blog post comparing the two, evaluating the pros and cons, so you can decide based on your preferences!

Additionally, Calistoga is a small town in California’s wine country with a historic downtown with plenty of wineries, but also a ton of other activities.

Where to Stay When Visiting Napa

There are lots of options for every type of budget.

Generally the hotels and resorts in the area are hundreds of dollars a night.

I would think the average is $400 a night or more and it’s hard to find anything less than $250 unless it’s a weekday or off season.

We personally couldn’t afford the hotels in Napa during this first visit, so we used our Hilton Honors discount and points to stay at a Hampton Inn in Suisun City .

It was only about 25 minutes from Napa .

On our second visit, we were actually staying in San Francisco for the week and just drove up to Napa for the day.

We stayed at Club Quarters San Francisco .

If you’re traveling on a budget , I recommend looking into staying about 20-30 minutes outside of Napa , looking into Bed and Breakfast options, or even camping.

It’s really hard to narrow down just a few recommendations because Napa really has some phenomenal, highly rated hotels, resorts, and inns all over.

So I suggest checking them all out and filtering by your budget, the type of accommodation you want, and the location, and you’ll find the perfect place for you.

If you use any hotel loyalty rewards programs, cashing in those points or rewards is also a good option to save some cash.

Marriott and Hilton both have plenty of resorts in this area and those are generally the two most popular hotel loyalty rewards programs.

Planning Your Napa Valley Day Trip Transportation

Planning your Napa Valley day trip can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.

With a little planning, you can easily create a day that’s full of wine tasting, beautiful views, and the best foods.

Here are a few tips to help you get started.

First you’ll need to decide if you’re flying in or if you’re driving.

Another option is to book a tour if you’re coming from an area like San Francisco where they will drive you round trip and take you to a set list of wineries.

Flying to Napa

If you’re flying into Napa, you have quite a few options.

The closest airport is Napa County Airport.

It’s not the largest airport though, so it may not be the cheapest option for you.

You could also fly into Oakland International Airport, which is about 50 miles south of Napa.

I personally would look into flying into San Francisco International Airport.

With it being such a major airport, it will probably be the cheapest option for you and it will probably have the most time options.

It’s about 55 miles south of Napa, so it’s not too far out of your way.

Lastly, another possible option is Sacramento International Airport, which is about 60 miles northeast of Napa.

Where you’re flying from, your budget, and your available times to fly will determine the best option for you.

So it’s best to research them all.

Driving to Napa

We were coming from Cupertino, so it was about an hour and a half drive to get to the Napa area on our first trip.

We had to drive up through the middle of San Francisco along Highway 101, which includes driving across the Golden Gate Bridge.

It was very foggy that morning and we couldn’t even see the Golden Gate Bridge until we were already on it!

You can see a short clip of this part of our drive in this video on our YouTube Channel .

I would say the only thing to consider about driving north into Napa is the traffic in and around San Francisco.

So when you’re checking how long it will take, make sure you’re searching according to the time you’ll be driving because you could have backups with rush hour traffic in the morning.

Taking Roundtrip Transportation To Napa

There are quite a few tour companies that will take you around Napa for the day from San Francisco if you’re not already in the Napa area.

One tour company allows you to book one way transportation from and/or to San Francisco if you’re staying in the Napa area but flying in or out of San Francisco.

So you won’t need a rental car at all during your day trip to Napa if you book this transportation and then have a tour that takes you around.

Transportation Once You’re In Napa

If you’re looking for transportation once you’re in Napa there are quite a few options.

One tour company allows you to hire a private SUV for up to 6 passengers for 6 hours where you can go all around Napa or even Sonoma.

How To Choose Which Wineries To Visit

This will be the most important part of your Napa Valley day trip itinerary.

I spent a lot of time researching the wineries in Napa to find our top 3-5 wineries.

Since we only had 1 day for wine tasting it was hard to narrow down the choices to just a few.

I started by just looking at TripAdvisor and other blogs for the best wineries in the region.

From there I picked places that just had amazing looking properties.

There were more on our list to do, but since wineries are typically only open until about 5 or 6 pm, we didn’t get through as many as we would have liked.

I recommend choosing 2-3 wineries per day because it will be hard to squeeze in anything more than that unless you’re picking all wineries that are next to each other.

Most wineries in Napa will require reservations, so you will definitely want to choose your wineries ahead of time.

Many have a time limit of 1 1/2 to 2 hours , so you can use that as a guide for what times to book your wine tastings for.

Then you’ll have to factor in driving time from place to place and when and where you’ll want to each lunch and dinner.

Now that you have a good idea of the planning involved for this day trip, let’s look at some of the best wineries and restaurants you’ll want

Conclusion: Napa Valley Wine Tasting Day Trip Itinerary

Ultimately these were the 3 wines we brought home with us.

They were our favorites from each of the places we did our wine tastings and we saved them all for special occasions like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and our birthdays throughout the following year.

The famed wine country charity auction shifted back to its original format and raised nearly $5 million for youth mental health

  • MaryAnn Worobiec

The Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) trade association held the latest iteration of the Collective Napa Valley Auction Weekend from May 31 to June 1. The evolving series of festive events raised $4.8 million, including a revamped live auction that brought in $2.4 million, and the proceeds will support youth mental health programs in Napa County.

Unlike both the extravagant prepandemic events and modest postpandemic fundraisers, the new auction brought back some of the original luxury while adding intimacy and focus, with a smaller audience and fewer lots. “There was such great energy. People were excited to be back,” said Emma Swain, CEO of St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery .

"We are truly thankful for the generosity of our donors and bidders," said Cyril Chappellet, chair of Napa Valley Vintners and CEO and chairman of Chappellet Winery . “When those who care about Napa Valley come together, wonderful things happen.”

A Star-Studded History

Auction Napa Valley (formerly known as the Napa Valley Wine Auction) was founded in 1981 by a group of local vintners , including Robert and Margrit Mondavi . The annual event included a live auction at Meadowood resort for nearly 40 years, raising more than $200 million for local health and education initiatives during that span.

The auction was iconic for wine lovers; paddles went up for rare and high-priced wines, fantasy vacations, trips on private jets, jewelry and tickets to exclusive experiences at the Kentucky Derby and Super Bowl. Lots typically went for tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Michelle and Robin Baggett of Alpha Omega at Auction Napa Valley.

At its peak, the live auction hosted as many as 1,000 guests, and bidding would go on for hours while up to 50 different lots were auctioned. The event was also known for celebrity appearances from the likes of Oprah Winfrey, John Legend, Jay Leno and Katy Perry. The auction raised a record $18.7 million in 2014, topping the $16.9 record the year before.

A Changing Event

The 2020 auction was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Meadowood was severely damaged by wildfires in 2020. Even before those events, there had been discussions among vintners about whether the long format needed freshening up. Other charity wine events modeled on Napa’s had begun to attract increasing attention, particularly the Naples Winter Wine Festival in Florida. In late 2020, the NVV announced the discontinuation of the premier charity wine auction. Fundraising efforts would pivot to a year-round program called Collective Napa Valley, with a series of events both in Napa and elsewhere.

Carlton McCoy, left, Shari and Garen Staglin at Auction Napa Valley.

Now the original format appears to be back, with some modifications. This year’s weekend began with the Napa Valley Barrel Auction, which took place at Hall Wines Friday. More than 1,600 guests sampled wines from 80 wineries and dishes from local restaurants. Wine lovers had the opportunity to bid on 10-case lots of unique wines from recent vintages, including offerings from Shafer , Cardinale , Alpha Omega , Robert Mondavi Winery , Chimney Rock and Salvestrin , among others.

Smaller Crowd, Big Lots

The main event—the live auction still known as Auction Napa Valley—took place Saturday, June 1, at Far Niente Winery . Nearly 400 guests (less than half of attendees in years past, and limited media) started with dinner prepared by chef Philip Tessier from Press , a Wine Spectator Grand Award–winning restaurant. Vintners walked around the tables pouring wines for guests.

With only 14 lots rather than the typical 50 from past years, the auction raised more than $2.4 million. While there were fewer lots, they were reminiscent of the extravagance of earlier years—trips to destinations around the world, private chef dinners, rare vintages of special wines. Jeff Smith and Carolyn Duryea of Hourglass winery were the honorary chairs, and Sotheby’s Meaghan Steele and Vanessa Conlin led the high-spirited bidding.

Teen beneficiaries at Auction Napa Valley.

A winning bid for $180,000 included three gold-and-diamond Chanel Coco Crush bracelets and 45 bottles of wine from St. Supéry ( Chanel is the parent company of the winery ). Hall Wines consigned a lot, offering 14 luxurious days at sea on "The World, Residences at Sea", a privately-owned, residential mega yacht paired with a 6-liter bottle of wine. It sold for $230,000. (NVV did not provide a complete list of lots and sale prices.)

Next year’s auction weekend is scheduled for June 6–7. Alpha Omega owners Michelle and Robin Baggett will serve as honorary chairs. The more focused approach appears to be the future of the auction. “Our desire is to keep the format intimate in size,” said Teresa Wall of NVV. “The energy and excitement is much the same, but the evening is more of a true Napa Valley experience—a blend of sophistication and laid-back elegance.” Charity events are still expected throughout the year locally and nationwide.

But, for now, there’s a sense that the auction is back. “It’s still the event to be at for great wine and a good time,” explains St. Supéry’s Swain.

Father and son tasting white wine in a vineyard

If the dad in your life loves wine, these wineries, vineyards, and special vintages are sure to please.

Dads deserve great wine, and a trip to a wine region is the ultimate splurge for fathers who want to immerse themselves in wine culture this Father’s Day or any day. Here are my picks for destinations across the U.S. (including your own house) that spoil dads with unique wine-tasting experiences.

Bryan, Texas

The tasting room at Messina Hof in Bryan

Adjacent to College Station, home of Texas A&M, is one of the state’s flagship winemakers, Messina Hof . While they have a tasting room in Texas Hill Country (increasingly becoming known as Texas Wine Country), and two more in Grapevine and Harvest Green, their location in Bryan is a lovely getaway in a quiet town, where dad can truly feel like he’s on vacation. Stay at the Villa Bed & Breakfast right on the Messina Hof estate – each room is decorated differently and feels like staying in your Italian grandparents’ home. Take a few steps to the tasting room, and you’re presented with wines that reflect over 40 years of experience, each better than the next. Next door is the Vintage House Restaurant, where your waiter will suggest wine pairings to complement farm-fresh meals. And for a special treat, schedule a cellar tour so dad can sample wines straight from the barrel.

TIP: Order some wines from the Paolo line and be sure to try the Sagrantino, as Messina Hof is the largest producer of this varietal in the nation.

Napa Valley, California

Cliff Lede Winery and Vineyard as seen from Poetry Inn.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

If dad loves some music with his wine, look no further than Cliff Lede Vineyards for a beautiful getaway in the heart of Napa Valley. Enter through the garden overflowing with flowers and eye-catching sculptures and make your way to the Backstage Tasting Lounge with its clubby vibe. Here, dad can settle into a plush chair or wander the room perusing the rotating art and the coolest aspect of all – a collection of limited edition rock music paraphernalia. Signed electric guitars and framed, handwritten lyrics from the likes of John Lennon line the walls. A stroll outside will delight – each block is named after the owner’s favorite rock songs and albums, so you’ll pass vines labeled “My Generation” or “Dark Side of the Moon.” The collection composes the Cliff Lede Rock Blocks, and each year two or more of the blocks are combined into a “mash up” that is featured in the tasting room. My favorites here? Have dad try the Cabernet Franc and the Sémillon. He can thank me later.

Reserve a room at the Poetry Inn Napa Valley , a grand estate with epic views of Cliff Lede and it’s surrounding vineyard. The Inn’s vineyard is the sole source of the estate’s flagship cabernet sauvignon, the aptly named Poetry. Indulge in a three-course breakfast served on the porch and relax in a luxurious poet-themed room.

While in Napa, treat dad to a bottle to take home. The Frank Family Patriarch Cabernet Sauvignon out of Frank Family Vineyards has a special story behind it. It’s dedicated to Rich Frank’s late father and World War II vet, Hy Frank, who was deployed to Normandy and landed on Omaha Beach four days after D-Day. Frank attributes his successful career as president of Disney Studios (among other titles) to his father's dedication, values and hard work, and he demonstrated that by presenting the first release of Patriarch to his father on his 98th birthday. Produced in very limited quantities, the Patriarch is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the best rows of vines on Frank's personal hillside estate vineyard in Rutherford.

The Dalles, Oregon

The Sunshine Mill Artisan Plaza and Winery in The Dalles, Oregon

If Dad is a faithful Shark Tank viewer, he knows the name James Martin. Martin was the first to turn down a Shark Tank deal (from Mr. Wonderful, no less), and the first to return to the Tank, where he rejected a second offer. Instead, he took his idea of “wine by the glass” back to Oregon, where he created single serving bottles of wine called Copa di Vino. He now sells 40-50,000 cases of Copa a year but also produces small batch wine through his Quenett Winery, something dad must absolutely try on his visit. While The Dalles, in the Hood River region of Oregon, is known for its outdoor activities, the Sunshine Mill Artisan Plaza and Winery where Martin and his wife Molli introduce their wines to visitors, is an uber cool break from activity. It’s housed in a 130-year-old flour mill formerly occupied by Sunshine Biscuit Company, famous for producing Cheez-Its. Now, this winery in the Columbia River Gorge has converted a parking lot into a drive-up movie lot and offers wine tastings in the Grand Tasting Hall, where dad can check out the old factory machinery, and the whole family can shop at the artisan market.

Lodi, California

A California vineyard ripe with grapes

Lodi wine country is smaller than its neighbors Napa and Sonoma, and tastings tend to be more affordable and relaxed in this area. This is the place for the casual dad who just wants to enjoy his wine without pretension. While he can spend days traversing vineyards and wineries, he should start at Oak Ridge Winery , housed in a 50,000 gallon redwood barrel lovingly referred to as industrial chic. The first time I drank the wines from their Old Soul brand, I was hooked, and dad will be too. Old Soul Cabernet recently scored 90 points and a Best Buy ranking from Wine Enthusiast. This year, Oak Ridge is celebrating Father’s Day with a Cabs for Dad sale – buy a bottle at a great price, take a seat outside, listen to live music on Saturday, and order from the onsite food truck.

Dad’s Backyard, Den, Or Any Favorite Place

Sommsation delivers the tasting experience to you, whether you're at home or at an event space.

If budget or time doesn’t allow for traveling far from home, you can still give dad a present that will make him feel like he’s on vacation. It may even prompt a future trip to a newly discovered wine region. Especially great for families who can’t be together for Father’s Day, the Sommsation wine tasting experience allows everyone to get together without hopping on a plane. Sommsation sets up a virtual tasting, then everyone logs in at a specified time to meet their personal sommelier and sip their way through an evening. You pick the wines that interest you most from the library of over 300 wines – we tried Sleight of Hand Cellars out of Walla Walla, Washington. Sommsation ships the bottles to each participant’s home in advance of the tasting and even offers snack foods and charcuterie boards for a full wine tasting experience. Unsure what wines dad loves the most? Use the gift card option so he can customize his tasting.

Hess Persson Estates ATV Tour in the vineyards

Unique Winery Experiences & Tours in Napa Valley

September 8, 2023.

Napa Valley is home to more than 400 wineries , and many offer more than just simple tasting experiences. Whether you’re looking to roll up your sleeves and play winemaker for a day, take in Napa Valley’s beautiful vistas from a unique vantage point, or experience a pairing you won’t find anywhere else, Napa Valley has something special just for you.

Please note that these experiences require pre-planning on the part of the winery, so reservations are required.

Winery Experiences for the Outdoor Enthusiast

Hess persson estates.

Tour the vineyards by ATV If you’re the adventurous type, Hess Persson Estate’s 1000+ acre mountainside vineyard in the property’s own luxury ATVs. Visitors can enjoy wine and food or wine and cheese pairing in the vineyard where the grapes are grown while enjoying panoramic views from the mountainside.

Cuvaison Estate Wines

Hike through the Carneros vineyards In the Los Carneros AVA, Cuvaison offers a guided hike through the vineyards, followed by an estate tasting and boxed lunch from Carneros Resort.

Pine Ridge Vineyards

Take a vineyard walk, and explore the wine caves Further upvalley in the Stags Leap District AVA, Pine Ridge offers an Explorer’s Tasting – an immersive tour and tasting that begins with a guided walk through the vineyard. After enjoying stunning views, explore the vast wine cave system and view daily winemaking activities. All of this is followed by a tasting of their most exclusive bottlings.

Shadybrook Estate Winery

Wine tasting paired with horseback riding Take a ride through the vineyards on horseback! Prior to the purchase of the Rapp Ranch’s Bordeaux vineyard in 2016 by the founders of Shadybrook Estate Winery, the property once bred award-winning racing and rodeo horses. They continue that equestrian tradition today with a guided trail ride through the breathtaking vistas of the Rapp Ranch Estate and the surrounding hills of Coombsville. Follow that with a relaxing wine tasting on the patio garden lounge, complete with a pairing of cheese and charcuterie.

Winery Experiences for the Aspiring Winemaker

Judd's hill winery.

Bottle Blending Day Camp Ever dreamed of being a winemaker, or just want to see what the experience could be like? Judd's Hill Winery offers a Bottle Blending Day Camp, where expert guides will lead you through a personal tasting and blending experience, ending with you hand-bottling, labeling and leaving with your very own blend.

Raymond Vineyards

Winemaker for a Day Raymond Vineyards offers its Winemaker for a Day experience in their Blending Room. Using Napa Valley Bordeaux-style red blends, guests can create their own custom blend, complete with a unique custom label.

Theater of Nature While you're visiting Raymond Vineyards, be sure to check out Napa Valley’s largest educational exhibit on Biodynamic farming. Like a theatrical performance, the experience is divided into five acts, each of which is devoted to a single component of nature. The “actors” each play a critical role in the crafting of great wines, from the soil to the vineyardist to larger forces like the lunar cycle. It’s a great way to romp outdoors before or after your tasting.

Brasswood Estate

Sensory Tasting This unique private tasting experience guides you through all the elements of wine using your senses. To help you pick out the characteristics of each wine in the tasting, they've carefully curated visual and aromatic elements inside hand-blown glass globes. Within each globe are representations of the wine varietals. Your wine flight is also paired with a seasonal menu of small bites.

Winery Experiences for the Art Enthusiast

Experience Art & Architecture HALL Wines is known not just for its 90+ rated Cabernets, but for its extraordinary exhibit showcasing the work of more than 25 established artists both in its tasting room and around the grounds. Download the "Hall Wines St. Helena Tour" app for online guidance or simply wander around the grounds with your glass of wine. Private tours are also available.

The Hess Collection Contemporary Art Museum When you visit the winery on Mount Veeder, you have the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of art museum, followed by a tasting of equally impressive estate-exclusive wines. Or make a reservation for a private tour of the museum with Director of Art, Robert Ceballos. Donald Hess’ collection is considered by ARTnews Magazine to be one of the top 200 in the world.

Winery Experiences for the Gourmand

Napa valley wine train.

Lunch & wine tasting onboard the Wine Train The Napa Valley Wine Train not only offers a unique and picturesque way of traveling through Napa Valley, but offers an incredible culinary experience alongside wine tasting. The Tasting on the Rails experience features seven courses paired with seven Napa Valley wines on a three hour, round-trip journey.

Clif Family Winery

Unique food pairings and a mocktail flight The Clif Family Bruschetteria Food Truck at their Rifugio Tasting Room is always a crowd-pleaser. On Wednesday nights, experience a Street Food Napa Valley, with flavors from all over the world that pair perfectly with Clif Family wines. Or if you want to kickstart your day, the Rise & Wine pairing showcases brunch-inspired bites and lighter style wines. For a non-alcoholic experience, try the Farm Elixir Mocktail Flight paired with small bites.

Wine paired with Asian dishes Nestled at the southern end of Napa Valley in American Canyon, Vietnamese-owned RD Winery offers one of the only Asian-inspired food pairings in Napa Valley. Served alongside an assortment of their eclectic blends, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
