Learn more about Kazakhstan

Best time to visit kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan has a continental climate, which lends itself to extreme temperatures. In summer (June to August) it can climb above 96 degrees F and in winter (December to February) you can expect temperatures to be as low as -10 degrees F. Snow stays on the ground for almost half the year. The best time to travel is during spring (May to June) and autumn (September to November) when temperatures are mild. While it can rain at any time of year, the amount varies across the country. In the desert you’ll get very little, while in the mountains it’s best not to leave home without a rain jacket.

Top 5 Tastes of Kazakhstan

1. beshbarmak.

This is Kazakhstan’s national dish and a meat lover’s delight. Chunks of boiled mutton served on flat squares of pasta.

Get ready for sausage, Kazakh-style. Made with horsemeat, the sausage is cooked for two hours before being served with generous servings of onion.

Wash down your main course with a glass of fermented mare’s milk. It’s mildly alcoholic and has a fizzy sensation. Shubat is another version made with camel’s milk.

4. Baursaki

Try these fried, doughy balls of goodness alongside soup.

Make new friends wherever you go by sitting down and sharing a cup of shay. This black or green tea is a Kazakh staple.

A MAGICAL PLACE FULL OF HISTORY & BEAUTY

Kazakhstan – a grandeur of mountain peaks, sparkling glaciers, quiet forest twilight, mystery deserts, huge rocky canyons, emerald lakes, fast running rivers, poetry sunlight, and unique flora and fauna. It is a country of ancient civilization of the Eurasian continent, the home of the nomadic tribes, a solid piece of the Great Silk Road.

Kazakhstan is a large country with the area that is among the ten largest countries in the world. It owns part of the largest lake in the world – the Caspian Sea, part of the infamous Aral Sea and lake Balkhash. Together, it causes a variety of landscapes of rich natural wonders.

As of 2018, the population stood at 18.48 million people, ranking 63rd in the list of countries. The population is represented by more than 130 ethnic groups, each having their own cultural, linguistic, and historical specificity. See the chart to the right for the largest ethnic groups.

Located in Central Asia, Kazakhstan has a total area of 2.72 million square km. The country shares it borders with Russia to the north and west, to the southeast is China, and to the south with Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Its territory extends from the lower reaches of the Volga River in the west, to the foothills of the Altai Mountains in the east, and from the West Siberian lowlands in the north to the Kyzyl Kum Desert to the south.

More than 3/4 of the country of Kazakhstan are plains with altitudes ranging from 100 to 300 m (328-984 ft) above sea level. In the extreme east and southeast stretches the Altai Dzhungar and Tian Shan with elevations ranging from 3000 to 6995 m (9,842-22,949 ft – the peak of Khan Tengri). In the far west is the Caspian lowland, partly lying below sea level. In the center of the country’s vast territory is the destroyed mountain system Kazakh Hills.

Kazakhstan has an ‘extreme’ continental climate, with warm summers and very cold winters. Indeed, Astana is the second coldest capital city in the world after Ulaanbaatar. Precipitation varies between arid and semi-arid conditions, the winter being particularly dry.

The remoteness of Kazakhstan from oceans and its large area affects climate conditions. The average January temperature range from -19  to -4 °C (-2 to 25 °F) with an average July temperature ranging from 19 to 26 °C (66 to 79 °F).

Mountainous regions of southeast Kazakhstan, up to 1000 m ( 3,281 ft), daytime air temperatures in summer months can reach 30 °C (86 °F), while night time temps can drop to 18 °C (64 °F). Average day temps in winter usually hover around -10 °C (14 °F) and can cool to -20 °C (-4 °F) at night.

In the north, precipitation can average up to 300 mm (12 in) while deserts can receive less than 100 mm (4 in) and the mountains up to 1600 mm (63 in) on a yearly basis. Snow typically begins to fall in November with mountain passes closed until April. Summer rains are often associated with severe thunderstorms, which sometimes lead to flash flooding.

While the official language is Kazakh, roughly 90% of the population is proficient in Russian. Russian is typically spoken by the population in all of the major cities of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan is considered a poly-confessional country, where more than 3,000 religious associations representing 40 denominations can be found in over 2,500 places of worship. All of the world’s major religions can be found in Kazakhstan.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

The monetary unit of Kazakhstan is the Tenge (Designation: International – KZT; Domestic – T). Banknotes and coins in circulation are in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000. Tenge is the only legal tender in the country. US dollars can be easily exchanged for Tenge, while the Euro is taken in almost all banks and exchange offices. Most banks only take new sample notes. Kazakhstan also accepts European and International credit cards, which are easily accepted in major hotels, shops and restaurants. ATM’s can be found in banks, hotels and shopping centers.

New Year – January 1-2 International Women’s Day – March 8 Nauryz – March 21-23 Feast of unity of the people of Kazakhstan – May 1 Victory Day – May 9 Capital Day – July 6 Constitution Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan – August 30 Day of first President – December 1 Independence Day – December 17

Most often in major hotels and restaurants, gratuity for the service is already included in the bill. Usually it is 5-15%. If such amount is not included with the total, you can include a tip. There is also a fixed amount for the service in the taxi and rail transport.

Foreign Citizens and those without citizenship need to obtain a visa for entrance into the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Citizens of Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, and Moldova do not need a visa to visit Kazakhstan, only a foreign passport. Entrance documents are stamped in the airport or other control centers. Foreign citizens can receive visa support before entering Kazakhstan. Validity of passport should not expire earlier than three months after expiration.

The name “Kazakh” comes from the ancient Turkic word qaz, “to wander”, reflecting the Kazakhs’ nomadic culture. The name “Cossack” is of the same origin. The Persian suffix -stan means “land” or “place of”, so Kazakhstan can be literally translated as “land of the wanderers”.

Kazakhstan has been inhabited since the Paleolithic. Pastoralism developed during the Neolithic as the region’s climate and terrain are best suited for a nomadic lifestyle. The Kazakh territory was a key constituent of the Eurasian Steppe route, the ancestor of the terrestrial Silk Roads. Archaeologists believe that humans first domesticated the horse in the region’s vast steppes.

Kazakhstan has the largest and strongest performing economy in Central Asia. Supported by rising oil output and prices, Kazakhstan’s economy grew at an average of 8% per year until 2013, before suffering a slowdown in 2014 and 2015. Kazakhstan was the first former Soviet Republic to repay all of its debt to the International Monetary Fund, 7 years ahead of schedule.

The ninth largest country in the world (it is twice the size of other four former Soviet Central Asian republics put together), Kazakhstan lies at the heart of the Eurasian steppe, at the cross-roads of some of the world’s most ancient civilisations. To its south lie monuments that tell of its long history with the great trading routes of the Silk Road, whilst its northern landscapes offer up vast sweeping steppes that cover one-third of the entire country. One of its most striking natural features, the mountains that run along its southern fringes, offer up a wealth of towering icy peaks, crystal lakes and dense, forested valleys.

A proud people, the Kazakhs can trace their ancestry back to the Mongolian hordes who ravaged Central Asia during the 12th century. Emerging as a distinct nationality in the 15th century, they remained largely nomadic until well into the 20th century, despite early colonisation by the tsars of neighbouring Russia.

Gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, today it sits on huge reserves of oil and mineral deposits, making it potentially one of the richest countries anywhere in Central Asia. It still retains much of its old frontier spirit though and its little visited landscapes provide the perfect setting for a truly intrepid adventure.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Kazakhstan though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. We recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

In Kazakhstan, the official unit of currency is the Tenge.

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

The first thing to say about travelling in Central Asia is that most areas, particularly the cities and towns, have a much more laid-back approach to Islam than their neighbours to the south in Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, as a technically Muslim region a little bit of caution and modesty should be applied in certain places. When visiting active mosques, women should cover their shoulders and wear trousers or skirts that fall below the knee, and men should not wear shorts.

Language & Religion

The Kazakh language is the state language, although Russian is also widely spoken.

Kazakhstan practices freedom of religion and is around two thirds Islamic, with the bulk of the remainder being Christian Orthodox.

Uzbekistan is 5 hours ahead of GMT A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

Kazakhstan’s staple food is lamb and rice. Shashlik (kebab) can be found everywhere, as can plov, a rice dish prepared with onion, carrots, and lamb. Many variations of plov exist, with sultanas, apricots, or pumpkin amongst others. Other popular dishes include laghman (noodles), manty (large meat ravioli) and samsa (a meat pastry similar to samosa). In Kazakhstan you will also come across kazy, a smoked horsemeat sausage, while the national dish is beshbarmak, boiled beef and mutton served on pasta squares. Much use is made of seasonal vegetables, fruit, and fresh herbs.

The national drink is fermented mares milk, kymys, but tea is the main drink, either green or black. Alcoholic drinks are widely available too and there is local beer as well as imported Russian beer (Baltika is quite popular with 16% alcohol). Vodka is usually drunk with meals in preference to wine.

Travelling Solo In Kazakhstan

All of our   small group tours   are designed to cater for   solo travellers : the number of solo travellers will vary from tour to tour, but usually over half will be travelling alone. Get all of the excitement of discovering new places combined with the security of travelling with an organised group, with like minded people.

ITINERARY & MAP

Day 1: Arrival in Almaty and City Tour.

Zenkov Kirche in Almaty, Kasachstan

Welcome to Kazakhstan! Most flights arrive early in the morning. You will transfer to the hotel for immediate check-in. Have a rest after your long flight and then enjoy breakfast. You’ll meet your fellow travelers and your guide in the hotel lobby at noon to go for lunch, followed by a relaxed half-day city tour of Almaty.

Almaty was the Kazakh capital until 1997 and  it is still the largest city in Kazakhstan. Its name translates as “the place of apples” as it is believed that this is the place where apples first grew. Almaty is a charming and green city, with wide, tree-lined roads. The Zailisky Ala-Too Mountains form a dramatic backdrop to the city.

Today you will visit Panfilov Park, which is named after World War II General Panfilov. An impressive monument has been erected in the center of the park in honor of Panfilov’s division. Almaty’s most famous sight, the wooden Zenkov Cathedral built in 1904, is situated in Panfilov Park as well.

At Green Bazaar, you will have the chance to experience local Kazakh culture as you shop for fresh fruits and vegetables. After the market, you will take the cable car to Kok Tobe, a hilltop overlooking the city which offers panoramic views.

Overnight in the Kazzhol Park (4*) or similar Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Almaty and Shymbulak.

Medeo in Kasachstan

You will meet your guide in the hotel lobby after breakfast and then head to the studio of a local artisan. Here you will learn about ancient nomadic ornaments and make your own little piece of a Kazakh national quilt.

After this masterclass, you will take a cable car to reach one of the main landmarks of Almaty, the Shymbulak ski resort, where you will enjoy wonderful views of the Ili Alatau Mountains. On the way to the ski resort you will pass the legendary Medeo skating rink. It is located in the picturesque Medeo Gorge at an altitude of 1,600 m and it is one of the largest and highest ice rinks in the world. You will have lunch here on the summer terrace of a Kazakh restaurant at an altitude of 2,260 m.

After lunch you will take another cable car and continue to the top of the ski resort (3,200 m). It will be a bit cold and windy, so make sure you bring a warm jacket. After taking in more mountain views,  you will drive back into the city for a walk along shady Terrenkur, a delightful path along the Little Almatinka. It is one of the most popular places for locals, where Almaty’s residents come to exercise or simply enjoy a stroll.

Day 3: Huns Village and Lake Issyk.

tour of kazakhstan

Breakfast will be at the hotel. Today you will immerse yourself in Kazakh culture, learning about traditions and rituals in the Huns ethno-village, about one hour’s drive from Almaty.

On arrival you’ll be welcomed by hostesses greeting you with a national ritual called Shashu. It involves showering guests with sweets, as Kazakhs do during wedding ceremonies. The sweets must be picked up and kept, as Kazakhs believe they will bring good luck in the future.

At Huns you will learn how to bake puffy Kazakh bread, see the construction of a Kazakh yurt, and be a spectator at performance of national horse games. The games include Jigitovka (horseback riding with acrobatic elements), Atpen audaryspak (jostling and pushing a rival whilst on horseback) and Kyz kuu, where a boy chases a girl on horseback. If he catches her he will be rewarded with a kiss; but if he fails, she can lash him! After the show you will have a delicious lunch of national cuisine.

In the afternoon, you will drive a bit further to Issyk, a postcard-perfect mountain lake at an altitude of 1,756 m above sea level, which is located within a gorge of the same name. Lying along the Kuldja tract, where hundreds of years ago merchants’ caravans passed through, the gorge is atmospheric and visually striking. You will then drive back to Almaty in time for dinner.

Day 4: Almaty – Turkistan (flight); Otrar and Arystanbab.

 alt=

After having breakfast and checking-out from the hotel, you will drive to the airport to catch the flight to Turkestan at 09:30. The flight takes around 1.5 hours.

Turkistan is the Spiritual Capital of the Turkic World and has long been a place of pilgrimage. You will have lunch on arrival and then drive through the scenery of South Kazakhstan to Otrar, also known as Farab, which was one of the biggest cities on the Silk Road. Located at the junction of many caravan routes,  Otrar, was a significant center of culture and trade. Its history dates back 2,000 years, and the surviving ruins include a fortress and remains of a once densely populated town.

After Otrar you will visit the Mausoleum of Arystanbab. He was the spiritual teacher of Khodja Ahmed Yassavi, whose mausoleum you will visit on Day 5.

In the early evening you will return to Turkistan. The city has undergone major changes during the last couple of years, and it has become the center of tourism in Southern Kazakhstan. You will have time to walk around the newest Karavan-Saray complex and watch a multimedia show to finish a long but interesting day.

Overnight in the Hampton by Hilton (4*) or similar Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Turkistan.

Turkestan mausoleum with camels

After breakfast you will have a full day of sightseeing at the Azret-Sultan Museum Reserve, which surrounds the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. You will begin by visiting the necropolis, a fragment of the fortress wall, the citadel and gates, the hammam, and the Hilvet underground mosque.

Turkistan was founded around 500 AD at the crossroads of caravan routes from Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. The city was the spiritual and political center of Turkic-speaking peoples fron the 16 th to 18 th centuries, and it was also the capital of the Kazakh Khanate. Turkistan gained its international reputation thanks to the preaching of the famous Sufi sheikh and philosopher Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, who was buried in a small mausoleum here in 1166. The current mausoleum was erected 233 years after the saint’s death, on the orders of Emperor Timur (Tamerlane). It is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and remains a major place of worship for Central Asian Muslims.

After lunch you will finish your museum tour and you will have some free time until dinner.

Day 6: Turkistan – Astana (flight).

Nursultan City View

After early breakfast, transfer to the airport to catch the flight to Astana at 9:15 am. Upon arrival at 10:55 am, you will drive into  the city center and have lunch.

Astana (previously named Astana) is Central Asia’s youngest capital and a showpiece for 21st century Kazakhstan. Talented, well-known architects from all over the world have made major contributions to the surreal skyline of this futuristic city in the steppe.

Your city tour will start at Independence Square. You will visit the impressive new National Museum. It has a huge collection, but your guide will focus on the most interesting rooms, including those exhibiting the Scythian gold hoards and, most importantly, the Golden Man.

We will then visit Baiterek Tower in the very center of Astana. The tower has become the symbol of the city. Its shape represents a poplar tree, and on its top is a golden egg laid by a magic bird from Kazakh folk tales. From the top of the tower you can enjoy the best views of Astana and the surrounding steppe. You will then have a walk along Nurzhol Boulevard. This avenue was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, and most of Astana’s most exciting contemporary buildings are situated here. The walk will end at the Khan Shatyr, a giant, tent-like shopping center designed by architect Norman Foster.

Overnight in the Hilton Garden Inn (4*) or similar Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Astana City Tour.

Nursultan expo museum of Kazakhstan

Today will be your last day in Kazakhstan. You will visit the futuristic Expo 2017 complex which boasts the biggest spherical building in the world, the Nur Alem Museum of the Energy. It was originally the Kazakh Pavilion. We will also visit the largest Mosque in Central Asia. Construction was only just finished a year ago. After this you will take a boat ride on the Ishim River, followed by a relaxed wander through Arbat, the artistic area of the capital.

Before our farewell dinner you will have some free time for shopping, to have a rest, or to further explore the city on your own.

Day 8: Departure from Astana.

KAZAKHSTAN TRAVEL INFORMATION

Money & costs, entry & exit, best time to go, money & costs:.

The Kazakh currency is called the Tenge (KZT). The banking system in Kazakhstan is the most developed in Central Asia and in big cities there are many places to exchange money and to withdraw cash from ATMs using a variety of cards. We recommend bringing some cash in new USD bank notes of denominations of at least 20 USD. Small and old-looking bank notes are harder to exchange. Paying directly with a credit card is possible in most places. An emergency fund of around 500 USD in cash is always good to have during guided trips to Central Asia.

Kazakhstan is a multi-ethnic country with a long history of tolerance. Guests and locals are treated with respect and the whole country can be regarded as a very safe destination for travelers. That said, you are advised to wear a money belt, watch your belongings, avoid dark streets at night and take only official taxis. Your safety is our first priority at Kalpak Travel; we know and regularly assess all our Kazakh partners and we closely monitor political events.

ENTRY & EXIT:

Citizens of most Western countries do not need a visa for a stay of up to 30 days in Kazakhstan. To be sure whether you need a visa or not you can contact us. Any permits you might need for access to places that will be visited during your tour, we will provide them for you free of charge. As soon as we receive the deposit payment for your tour, we will confirm your booking and send you an email with important pre-departure information. Please read it carefully as it contains important information on customs regulations for Kazakhstan.

BEST TIME TO GO:

The climate of Kazakhstan is continental and dry in the majority of the country, including the largest cities. Summers are very hot with day temperatures between 30° and 40° Celsius and winters are extremely cold with strong winds. In the mountains, however, the weather is quite changeable. If you are planning to visit the mountains the best season is summer. Be aware, however, at high altitudes of 3000 meters or more it may even snow overnight during the summer. For cultural sightseeing tours, spring and autumn are the best seasons. Autumn is also the time when the country goes to harvest, meaning markets are full of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Do not drink water, unless it is bottled, filtered, or boiled. Do not use tap water for brushing your teeth or making ice either. Do not eat ice cream. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled. If you follow these basic rules, you are likely to avoid any health issues like traveler’s diarrhea. Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, and Tetanus are recommended vaccinations for Kazakhstan. Ensure you are fully insured for medical emergencies including repatriation. Medical services in Kazakhstan are basic at best.

Travellers' Impressions of Kazakhstan

If you're looking for a place off the beaten track for a holiday, I strongly recommend going to Kazkhstan. We visited Astana, Almaty and using the Kalpak Travel offer we had a chance to visit amazing places as the Singing Dunes, Charyn Canion, Kolsay and Kaindy Lakes. For 3 days we had a rare possiblity to admire the beauty of nature of Kazkhstan. The trip organised by Kalpak was excellent, the guides appeared to be very friendly and caring people, I think it would be almost impossible to organise everything on our own. Thanks Kalpak team and your team in Kazakhstan to make our memories unforgettable.

The guides in each city spoke excellent English and were extremely informative on all aspects of Central Asia. In Almaty, we were invited to have dinner at our tour guide's home. The food was fabulous and we had a wonderful evening…. We were very lucky to have Kalpak Travel as our tour company which exceeded our expectations with flying colours. We highly recommend Kalpak Travel if you are planning a hassle-free tour of Central Asia.

The Discoveries Of

One Week in Kazakhstan – A Step-by-Step Kazakhstan Itinerary

Plan your visit with this in-depth Kazakhstan itinerary.

Many people believe that Kazakhstan is a country full of indefinite flatness. And, in some ways, that’s true, there is a lot of flatness to be seen here.

However, Kazakhstan also boasts bustling cities, amazing mountains, sparkling alpine lakes, and stunning canyons. In just one week in this vast country, I saw all of the above (and more!).

Some Americans claim that Kazakhstan is an inaccessible destination because of where it’s located. However, it’s not that much farther from the USA than Thailand or South Africa, both of which see thousands of American tourists each year.

In fact, in just one week, you can experience a lot of the best things this country has to offer! Read on to hear my tried-and-tested 7-day itinerary if you only have one week in Kazakhstan.

A few guidelines about this itinerary:

  • Outdoor lovers
  • Hikers of all levels
  • Adventure travelers
  • Extreme foodies
  • People who don’t like hiking
  • City people (I’ve only given you one day in Almaty here)

One Week in Kazakhstan: A Sample Itinerary

Day 0: arrive in almaty.

Almaty Kazakhstan

If you’re flying into Almaty, you’ll arrive into Almaty International Airport (ALA). From there, a taxi to the city center costs up to ~3,000 KZT and takes about 30-45 minutes. In Almaty, I’ve heard great things about FM Hostel Almaty (budget) or Renion Park Hotel (mid-range), which are both centrally located and reasonably priced.

Day 1: Almaty City Tour

As one of the largest cities in Central Asia , Almaty feels like the “New York” of Kazakhstan.

With crowded streets, upscale shopping malls, and a widespread public transit system, Almaty is easy to get around and explore. While you’re recovering from jet lag, you can get to know some of the areas that make Almaty such a beloved city in Central Asia.

You can roam the city independently, or register for this well-renowned walking tour in the city.

One of the city’s most notable sights, the  Ascension Cathedral   is a colorful Russian-style church located in one of the city’s most picturesque parks (* Note: as of my visit, the Ascension Cathedral is closed and covered in scaffolding for renovations ).

Even if you don’t enter the cathedral, the surrounding Panfilov Park is the perfect place for a morning stroll or some light people-watching. There are many museums in the area, like the Kazakhstan Museum of Musical Instruments or the Central State Museum.

In the late afternoon or early evening, head to Kok-Tobe by cable car for sweeping views of the city and some prime people-watching activities.

Or, alternatively, stroll along the Zhibek Zholy walking street and grab your dinner there.

Day 2: Hiking in Medeu and Shymbulak (Chimbulak)

Medeu

I didn’t actually make it up to Medeu and Shymbulak when I was in Almaty, but I heard from many fellow travelers that this was one of the best things to do while visiting Almaty.

Medeu is the city’s outdoor ice skating rink, and Shymbulak is the nearby ski resort. In the winter, they serve these exact purposes, but in summertime, the grounds open up for a variety of walks and day hikes.

Many people told me it was akin to hiking in the Alps (which is a pretty raving review coming from Swiss people themselves).

So, if you feel like getting outdoors, I’d recommend taking a day of your week-long itinerary to go up to Medeu to do some hiking.

To get to Medeu, you can take the Medeu cable car or travel by public bus/taxi.

Day 3: Day Trip to Big Almaty Lake

Big Almaty Lake

One of the most beloved local hangouts in the Almaty region is Big Almaty Lake. Known to locals simply as ‘Bao,’ this water reservoir is located high in a mountainous area.

Depending on the time of year and the lighting, the water ranges from a pale blue to a deep turquoise. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a picnic by the lakeside and people watch. However, don’t go near this precious drinking water – it’s guarded by soldiers and is illegal to enter.

To get to Big Almaty Lake, you can hire a taxi from the city each way for ~3,000-4,000 KZT each way. Yandex Taxi is an app that works really well for ordering taxis over a WiFi or cellular connection.

I STRONGLY recommend organizing your transport to and from the lake in advance, as taxis can be somewhat hard to come by up at the lake. If you have trouble communicating with your driver, you can also ask your hotel/hostel to organize it for you (usually at a slightly more expensive price).

Alternatively book a day-long tour to Big Almaty Lake

Day 4: Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon is a huge surprise in the middle of otherwise steppe-like terrain.

It’s a large, jutting canyon that’s a beautiful shade of red-orange. Inside the canyon, there are amazing and somewhat extraterrestrial-looking rock formations. It’s really spectacular, especially if you can manage to go when the sun is low in the sky.

Inside of the canyon, there’s a hiking trail that takes you to a small river and campground, but you can also hike the rim, which gives you amazing bird’s eye views of the canyon below.

To get to Charyn Canyon, you have a couple of options:

Take a day tour from Almaty – According to other travelers, you can find a day trip to Charyn Canyon from Almaty for a very reasonable price. However, you’ll be really time-constrained and the tours don’t actually run regularly so you need to book in advance.

Join a multi-day tour which includes Charyn Canyon – This is the option I did, and the one I recommend for people who are both budget-conscious and time-constrained. I paid ~$300 USD for a 4-day trip, including all meals and accommodation. Tours generally cost less per person with more passengers.

Hire a private driver – This is the most expensive option, but is also the safest, most flexible, and most convenient.

Rent a car and self-drive – Iron Horse Nomads and European Backpackers Hostel.

As a side note, I took a 4-day tour to Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lakes, Kaindy Lake, and Altyn Emel Sand Dune. I highly recommend doing the tour if you’re short on time, so you can see everything in one fell swoop.

However, during my tour, our group had some run ins with terrible disorganization and our driver once come to pick us up while drunk. Therefore, I can’t recommend – and actively dissuade you from attending – the tour I went on (with Almaty Backpackers). This tour looks like a good alternative , even though it’s shorter – or ask at your hotel or hostel.

Day 5: Kaindy Lake

Kaindy Lake

Kaindy Lake was my favorite place in all of Kazakhstan, and it should be pretty easy to see why.

It’s one of the most brightly-colored and strange lakes I’ve ever seen, with an outcropping of white tree trunks sticking out of its otherwise glass-like waters.

These trees used to stand in the valley before it was a lake, and remained there after the waters and glacial melt started to enter the region.

To do this, you’ll need to take a bus, taxi, or private car to Saty village. There’s a rumor about a bus at 9 am from Almaty to Saty, but I was never able to confirm this. I came to Saty as part of my tour.

From Saty, you need to take another marskrutka (4WD) to Kaindy Lake. From the parking lot, you can walk around the lake, to the front viewpoint (pictured above) or the back side, where swimming is permitted.

After your adventure at Kaindy, you’ll need to spend the night in the area. You have two options for accommodation here: camping at Kaindy Lake (a prime spot by the lakeside) or staying in a yurt/guesthouse in Saty village.

Day 6: Kolsai Lakes National Park

Kolsai Lake

Avid hikers – you shouldn’t miss Kolsai Lakes on your Kazakhstan itinerary.

Filled with 3 magnificent glacial lakes surrounded by mountains and endless miles of emerald evergreen forests, Kolsai is the perfect place to spend a day (or two) hiking. You can also go for a swim in the second lake, but keep in mind that it’s VERY cold.

Here, there are dozens of miles of trails you can take to 3 different glacial lakes within this national park. I did a day hike to the second lake, which was ~17 km round trip.

To get here, you can drive (4WD) or take a marshrutka from Saty village. Upon arrival, there’s a small fee to enter the park. You’ll spend another night in Saty.

Day 7: Altyn-Emel & Singing Sand Dunes

Singing Sand Dunes

The next day is a driving day – you’ll be headed to the giant sand dunes of the Almaty area in Altyn-Emel National Park.

Start early because the drive is really long – likely 4-5 hours or more. However, once you get to Altyn-Emel, you won’t be disappointed. It’s not a huge complex of sand dunes, but the unique thing about it is that it’s surrounded by flat steppe.

You drive for miles on the flattest, most open road ever, and BOOM, you suddenly see a giant golden sand dune pop up out of nowhere. It’s called the “singing sand dune” because the winds cause a low, rumbling hum if the conditions are perfect.

After you’ve hiked up and around the sand dunes, you can head back to Almaty and spend the night there at FM Hostel Almaty (budget) or Renion Park Hotel (mid-range).

Day 8: Departure

On your last day, you’ll head to the airport for departure. One week in Kazakhstan flies by, doesn’t it?

If You Have More Time in Your Kazakhstan Itinerary

One week in Kazakhstan is definitely enough to get a feel for the culture and nature of the country, but if you can take an extra week here, I’d highly recommend it. If you have an additional week in Kazakhstan, here are a couple more places you can explore.

Shymkent & Turkestan

Shymkent

If you’ve got a few more days, Shymkent and Turkestan are the easiest places to visit from Almaty.

In Shymkent, you can experience the most hospitable people in all of Kazakhstan (true story), and use it as a jumping off point to experience the Aksu Canyon, Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve, and the Tian Shan Mountains.

Turkestan is famous for its Silk Road-style mausoleum, adorned with gorgeous tiles and magnificent architecture.

To get to Shymkent/Turkestan, you can hop on an overnight train, a marshrutka, or a flight to get to Shymkent from Almaty. Then, Turkestan is just a few hours on a minibus from the main bus station.

Where to Stay in Shymkent

For budget travelers, I recommend Hostel Sweet Home in Shymkent. Albina, the owner, is one of the kindest and most hospitable people I met in Kazakhstan, and she makes a delicious breakfast, too. The hostel is affordable and clean, and there’s air conditioning in all of the bedrooms. Book Hostel Sweet Home now

Astana

Astana is Kazakhstan’s capital, and it’s unlike any other city I’ve ever seen.

With shiny, modern, almost outer-space-like architecture and some of the most amazing mosques and museums in the country, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re craving a city vibe.

There are a surprising number of things to do in Astana considering it’s pretty far off the typical tourist track.

From Astana, you can also take an overnight trip out to Burabay National Park, a beautiful, lake-filled park at the very northern part of Kazakhstan.

Where to Stay in Astana

For budget travelers, I recommend Hostel Forum . It is clean, cozy, and private, the staff speaks English fairly well, and it’s very affordable. It’s also easily accessible by taxi or public transportation from many of the main sites. Book Hostel Forum now

One Week in Kazakhstan: Practical Tips

How to get to kazakhstan.

While there’s no direct flight from the USA to Kazakhstan (yet), Kazakhstan is fairly easily accessible with just one layover from most major airports. It’s also easy to find direct flights from large European cities. The major international airports of Kazakhstan are in Almaty (ALA) and Astana (TSE).

Getting Around Kazakhstan

This is by far the easiest and quickest way to get around Kazakhstan, but it’s also the most expensive. Compared to domestic flights in the United States or Canada, however, inter-city flights in Kazakhstan are reasonably affordable. Local airlines Bek Air and Air Astana offer domestic flights within Kazakhstan.

Between Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent there are slow trains that run regularly. However, they are  really slow. Like 20+ hours slow. It’s much, much more time efficient to take a plane or even a bus.

If you really  want to experience trains in Kazakhstan, I recommend taking one between Shymkent and Almaty (or vice versa), as that ride only takes 11-12 hours. You can choose from first class (2-berth), second class (4-berth), and the platzkart (open berth car).

Obviously the platzkart is the cheapest, but you can choose your service class depending on your desired level of comfort. You can look at schedules and book train tickets on tickets.kz . You can also purchase tickets in person at any train station.

By Bus/Marshrutka

Marshrutkas, or mini buses, leave from the main bus station of every city and go to a variety of towns and cities around Kazakhstan and Central Asia. You can expect to pay anywhere from <$1 (local marshrutkas) to $7-10 (long distance marshrutkas) per ride)

One Week in Kazakhstan

I’m Kay. I’m originally from small town Virginia, but have moved all around the East Coast and the United States for basically my entire life. I spent my childhood days blissfully wandering through the Blue Ridge Mountains, rolling in leaves, playing in creeks…you know, the usual overly adventurous 5-year-old stuff.

But those early years spent outside gave me a real problem: I’m now an adventure addict. Basically, if I’m not at my computer banging out articles or photos, I’m probably out hiking, biking, or camping somewhere beautiful.

Four Seasons

By the beginning of summer, kazakhstan is changing - the nature finally blossoms and pleases the inhabitants with long sunny days. summer is probably the favorite season of the people of kazakhstan, who honor folk traditions and holidays. it is in summer that the season of kazakh weddings (toy) reaches its climax. since the beginning of june, a huge number of weddings have been taking place in kazakhstan, turning summer into an ongoing holiday..

Autumn

Autumn is a time of picturesque photo shoots in orange-red tones. Even without leaving the city, going to the nearest park, you will be delighted with the bright colors of birches, rowans, oaks and other deciduous trees. And in mountainous areas, for example, Almaty, East Kazakhstan regions, sunset colors will always be diluted with shades of green of different species of coniferous plantations. No less picturesque are the autumn landscapes of the resort areas "Burabai", Imantau-Shalkarskaya, Karkaralinsk, even if the mountains are lower here.

Winter

Winter is a time for lovers of downhill skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. Almaty and East Kazakhstan regions are famous for ski resorts, steep wild slopes for freeriders. "Shymkent", "Akbulak", "Tabagan", Oi-Qaragai, "Altai Alps" are famous places for family holidays far beyond the borders of the country. But what to do where there are no mountains? Skate! There are dozens of indoor and outdoor ice rinks in almost every city of Northern and Central Kazakhstan.

Spring

Fields of tulips in Turkestan and Zhambyl regions, poppies in Almaty and Zhetysu, lilac candyks in the east of the country – do not allow travelers to stay in one place for a long time! In spring, at the end of March, the whole country celebrates the bright holiday of Nauryz. Spring renewal holiday, when people visit each other, snow-white yurts are installed on the streets of cities and villages and treats are prepared for everyone!

In the previous two centuries, the nomadic history that took place on these wide steppes changed into a sedentary way of life, yet remnants of it can still be seen in petroglyphs and the local mentality.

Since getting its independence in 1991, Kazakhstan has distinguished itself with really distinctive cities, significant economic advancements, and a rapidly growing tourism sector.

Is It Safe to Visit Kazakhstan?

Actually, no place in the world is 100% safe. You have to take precautions to avoid any kind of safety issue. Kazakhstan is a fairly safe country. Government and officials take care of the tourists coming to their country.

Especially in Almaty, Astana, and Atyrau, incidents frequently happen at nighttime as visitors are leaving pubs and nightclubs. Therefore, one should be cautious while visiting Kazakhstan.

What is Kok Tobe Famous For?

With the help of Georgian engineers, the cable car that ascends to the peak of Kok Tobe was planned and constructed, making it the first of its type in Central Asia. Almaty Tower was the third-tallest tower in the world when it was built.

It continues to hold the record for being the world's highest free-standing tubular steel construction. Apart from its height, the tower is notable for its seismic resilience; it can survive earthquakes with a Richter rating of 8.0.

In Kok-Tobe, there are also gift shops where you may get the ideal memento of Kazakhstan.

After having breakfast at the hotel, it’s time to hit the road. We pack our belongings in the van and start the 4-hour drive to the Charyn Canyon . The Charyn Canyon (or Sharyn Canyon) is part of the Charyn Canyon National Park.

For more than 12 million years, wind, water and sand sculpted Charyn’s red sandstone to form the wonderful shapes and shades that vary from deep orange to light brown. Some of the cliffs resemble fantastical figures, the reason why some parts of the canyon are also called the Valley of Castles, the Devil’s Gorge and the Ghosts Gorge.

Upon arriving at Charyn Canyon, we’ll have a walk to enjoy its magnificent landscapes, which many people often call “the Grand Canyon’s little brother”.

Tours Kazakhstan: 10-day Best of Kyrgyzstan - Kazakhstan Tour

After our visit to the canyon, we’ll get back in the car and drive another 2 hours to finish the day at Saty, a small village near the Kolsai Lake National Park , where we have dinner and spend the night at a small guesthouse.

DAY 3:   Day Hike to the Kolsai Lakes

After enjoying breakfast at the guesthouse, we get in the car to make the short drive to visit the picturesque Kolsai Lakes .

The Kolsai Lakes National Park houses a system of three lakes, nestled among the hills of the Northern Tien Shan Mountains, approximately 300km east of Almaty. They are also called “The Pearl of the Northern Tien Shan” and after visiting the lakes, you’ll totally get why!

The lakes are so clear that, when the sun is out, the surrounding forests, hills, and snowy mountain peaks are mirrored in the water.

Kolsai Lake - Travel Guide to Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy Lake - second Kolsai lake - Journal of Nomads

The first lake is easily accessible by car, from where we go on a hike to the second lake as it can only be reached on foot. This medium-hard 6-hour hike is a 16km round trip, and the trail can be steep in some parts but the views are very rewarding!

Day 4: Saty – Lake Kaindy – Kegen (border with Kyrgyzstan) – Karakol

After an early breakfast, we pack up our belongings and drive to another breathtaking mountain lake, situated not very far from Saty village, – Lake Kaindy . It’s one of the most unique lakes in the world!

This 400m long lake was formed in 1911 after an earthquake triggered an enormous limestone landslide, which formed a natural dam in the gorge that was covered by spruce trees. The lake is almost 30 m deep and if you look underwater, you can still see the needles on the submerged trunks of this “sunken forrest”.

We check-in at our guesthouse and head out again to go on a guided city tour to visit the highlights of Karakol in the afternoon. In the evening, we go to a restaurant and taste the local cuisine and specialties of this region.

day 5: Day Hike to the Karakol Gorge

Today we’ll head into nature again and go on an easy day-hike (16km – 6 hours) to the picturesque Karakol gorge . You’ll see the stunning beauty of this mountain gorge by walking along the river that comes from the glaciers further in the Tian Shan Mountain Range.

The rich vegetation with its vivid colors and beautiful landscapes will be a pleasure for the eyes! We’ll hike to a roaring waterfall and then hike the trail back to the starting point, from where we return by car to Karakol and spend another evening in the guesthouse there.

We hit the road again and stop at another wonderful destination: the Skazka Canyon . It’s nicknamed “ Fairytale Canyon ” because of its irregular rock formations that resemble animals, fantastical characters and castles.

Not only the shapes in this canyon are remarkable, but also the colors of the rocks are very unique. You’ll find yourself in a world of red, pink, orange and yellow and it almost feels like you’re walking in a very colorful painting!

After a short one-hour-walk in the canyon, we continue our way to Bokonbaevo . This village is the home to the few remaining eagle hunters in Kyrgyzstan. We’ll meet one of the eagle hunters who will tell us about his work and give us a demonstration on how he trains his eagles.

Day 10: son Kul – bishkek

On the final day of this tour, we get up early in the morning to pack up and make the 7-hour drive to Bishkek , the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

Orto Tokoi Water Reservoir Kyrgystan

We arrive in Bishkek in the afternoon. We go on one last guided city tour together and visit the capital’s highlights, such as Ala-Too square, Oak park, The White House, etc. and learn more about the history of the city.

What are the best things to do in Bishkek

The tour and this trip finishes around 6pm. There’s an optional dinner to say goodbye to our amazing group of friends!

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch.

Most international flights from Bishkek leave in the early morning. You can choose to spend the evening in Bishkek before going to the airport after the farewell dinner or stay an extra night at a ho(s)tel in Bishkek and leave the day after. We can help organizing your accommodation in Bishkek.

If you want to return to Almaty, you can take the bus or a shared taxi from Bishkek (5-hour journey) in the early evening. You’ll receive an info guide upon booking with further information.

Note: This itinerary can be modified in case of weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW about JOINING THE BEST OF Kyrgyzstan Kazakhstan TOUR

Kyrygyzstan and Kazakhstan are both very safe countries. I often travel there alone as a woman and never felt unsafe. You’ll experience how kind and hospitable the people are. In case you’re still doubting, read my Kyrgyzstan Safety Guide and Kazakhstan Safety Guide .

Kyrgyzstan has a visa-free policy for citizens of 61 countries, including citizens of most EU countries, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia . Check  here  to see whether or not you need to obtain an e-visa or if you’re granted a free visa on arrival. Kazakhstan has a visa-free policy for citizens of the European Union, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many more countries. Check here  to see whether or not you need to obtain an e-visa or if you’re granted a free visa on arrival. Note: we can’t offer visa support in case you need a Letter of Invitation

The tour starts in Almaty , the capital of Kazakhstan , which has an international airport. There are 26 airlines flying to Almaty, among which Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Fly Dubai and Air Astana. The tour finishes in Bishkek , the capital of Kyrgyzstan . You can book a return flight from Bishkek via Istanbul with either Pegasus or Turkish Airlines. Those flying from other continents (America, Australia, Asia,…), also have the option of flying via Dubai with FlyDubai. In case you want to book a return flight from the same city (Almaty or Bishkek) as this might be cheaper, you’ll receive an info guide upon booking in which I provide detailed info about how to travel overland between Almaty and Bishkek or your flying options.

In Kazakhstan, we organize lodging in hotels, guesthouses and homestays owned by local families. In Kyrgyzstan, we organize lodging in guesthouses, homestays and yurt camps owned by local families. The rooms in the hotels, guesthouses and homestays are shared between 2 to 4 people. A single supplement (having a private room) is only possible in the cities (Almaty and Karakol) at the additional price of €140. The yurts have shared spaces, accommodating 4 to 6 people (no single option possible). The yurt camps nowadays provide beds with blankets and pillows.

The hotels and guesthouses in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have western-style toilets and hot showers. The yurt camps in Kyrgyzstan don’t have showers so you’ll have to be comfortable with refreshing yourself in the lake or nearby rivers. The toilets are outside in the form of a separate small building.

The food in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan is very similar. Breakfast is usually fried eggs, bread and/or porridge. Lunch and dinner usually consist of 2 courses: a hearty soup and a local dish with mutton and beef, served with noodles, potatoes or rice and a salad on the side. If you’re a vegetarian, you’ll get the same meals but without any meat. It’s more difficult to cater for a vegan, a gluten-free and/or a dairy-free diet but we’ll do our best!

Summer (June until September) is the best time for this itinerary. The temperature in the cities will be around 25°C (June and September) and 30ºC in the month of August. It will also be warm at the natural sites in Kazakhstan. In Kyrgyzstan, we’ll also spend time in the mountains where it will be significantly cooler. You can expect temperatures around 15ºC/ 58ºF during the day and 5ºC/ 41ºF at night. Most yurt camps have stoves that will be lit at night if needed. However, the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so you might experience rain, snow, and sun in one day.  Bring warm and waterproof clothes, suitable for any weather condition. Once you’ve confirmed your booking, you’ll receive a detailed packing list.

Once you’ve confirmed your booking, you’ll receive a detailed packing list.  You should have a comfortable daypack (20L – 30L) to carry your rain gear, warm sweater or jacket, sunscreen, water, and camera.

There is going to be electricity and wi-fi at the hotels and guesthouses. There won’t be any electricity and wi-fi when we stay at the yurt camp in Son Kul (days 8 and 9). Bring a  USB power bank  to keep your electronic accessories charged.   The power  plugs  and  sockets  are of type C and F (same as in Europe). The standard voltage is 220 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. You can buy a SIM-card (info will be provided upon booking) but know that you won’t have coverage in the mountains of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and that you’ll need a different SIM-card for both countries.
