History and government

The first nations.

It’s widely accepted that humans first settled in the area that is now Canada around 15,000 years ago, after traveling from what is now known as Russian Siberia. Russia and Northern America are thought to have once been connected by a land bridge until rising sea levels created the Bering Strait. Canada’s first inhabitants were likely hunter-gatherers, and it’s also widely agreed that in around 2500 BC, a second major wave of migration from Siberia brought the ancestors of the Inuit to Canada. In around 1000 BC, Thule communities from Alaska began traveling east into the Canadian Arctic.

By the late 15th century (around the time of European colonization), indigenous communities had spread beyond the Arctic regions to four main areas – the Pacific, the plains (now south-central Canada), the southern Ontario/St Lawrence River area, and the northeast woodlands.

Colonization

Both France and Britain competed fiercely for Canadian territory as colonists searched for mineral riches before establishing a lucrative fur trade. Many First Nations communities were displaced during this period and suffered from food and land shortages. The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 after hundreds of years of fighting, officially making Canada a British territory.

Bringing the territories together

Britain appointed governors across Canada to head up each colony, much to the French-speaking territories’ distress. The British North America Act was passed in 1867 and Canada became a self-governing state with a new set of rules. It was an improvement, but still not accepted by all. The priority was to gather all colonies under this one confederation. The iconic ‘Mounties’ were established to bring law and order to the ‘wild west’, which itself created conflict, especially with threatened First Nations peoples. In 1931 Canada was granted relative independence from the British Empire, giving it full legal autonomy and equal standing with England and other Commonwealth countries.

Independence and First Nations' progress

Canada's indigenous communities struggled through the 20th century and were only granted the right to vote in 1960. As discrimination and land rights tensions grew, a Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples called for a complete overhaul of government relations with the Indigenous population. An official Statement of Reconciliation from the Ministry of Indian and Northern Affairs was issued in 1998, which accepted responsibility for past injustices towards indigenous peoples. To this day, progress is still being made towards proper recognition and reconciliation of indigenous peoples in Canada.

Canada is still a member of the Commonwealth but the British monarch retains a purely ceremonial role. The country continues to flourish, with immigration from Europe and Asia leading to increased multiculturalism – more than 20% of Canada’s population was born overseas – while a resource boom has strengthened the economy. Canada is becoming increasingly known as a liberal, tolerant nation thanks to legalized marijuana use, same-sex marriage, universal health care, and some of the most liveable cities in the world.

Canada is big. And we mean huge. This may seem obvious when looking at a map, but you really feel it when you're out there road-tripping. With such a large land mass, it comes as no surprise that the environment varies depending on which area of Canada you are traveling in.

Sitting between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada shares a long land border with the United States in the south and Alaska (US) and Greenland in the north. Mountains, forests, and woodlands can be found throughout the country, with relatively flat, arable plains dotted around too. There’s a lot of ice and tundra in the Arctic North. The country’s unique geography is one of the many reasons that this country is so well-traveled and loved by tourists, but this can pose a risk, notably for drivers. Microclimates along mountain passes, like the Glacier National Park between BC and Alberta, are known for notorious weather conditions. Canada’s federal goods and services tax (GST) adds 5 percent to most transactions and most provinces also charge an additional tax to have a combined harmonized sales tax (HST), usually around 10–15 percent in total. Expect most, if not all, products to have this already included in the marked price.

It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Calgary Stampede

This 10-day hoedown features rodeos, parades, barbecues, and more cowboy hats than you can shake a stick at. The locals call it the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth and it has been running in Calgary, Alberta, since 1912.

Montreal International Jazz Festival

Swap your boot scootin’ for some toe-tapping as more than 3000 performers from over 30 nations entertain millions during this annual celebration of jazz. Over 5500 pounds of French fries are consumed each year, which is fitting given Montreal is the hub of French-speaking Canada.

Vancouver Festival of Light

This dazzling display of fireworks is not to be missed. Technicians gather from across the world to compete and put on the best and most engaging display. It’s the longest-running offshore fireworks competition in the world.

You'll know that it's Canada Day , no matter where you are in Canada. The locals celebrate this national holiday with parades, fireworks, parties, concerts, and barbecues, so be sure to get into the maple-leaf spirit.

If you find yourself in Ottawa or greater Ontario in early February, chances are there’ll be a winter festival like Winterlude happening. Canada’s capital turns into a majestic winter wonderland and the focal point is Rideau Canal, which turns into the world’s largest skating rink at 4.8 miles long.

Quebec Winter Carnival

This festival even has its own mascot – a giant, tuque-wearing snow figure called Bonhomme Carnaval – who embodies the ‘joie de vivre’ (or ‘joy of living’) during winter. Come for Bonhomme and stay for parades, snow sculptures, ice skating, and more.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Canada?

Canada's vast land mass makes for beautiful scenery and varying climate conditions. December, January and February are the coldest months and traveling can be difficult at times due to the occasional road closure or snowstorm. That said, this time of year is ideal for skiing, snowboarding and all your winter delights.

June, July and August are the warmest months. They’re perfect for outdoor activities like rafting, hiking, camping and canoeing. Tourist hotspots and other popular places will be much busier than in other months due to warmer temperatures. 

While not typically as warm as the summer months, May and September still offer great conditions for traveling and sightseeing without the crowds.

Do I need a visa to travel to Canada?

Many nationalities are able to travel to Canada without a visa, provided they obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before arriving. This includes citizens of Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan, France and many others. Like most countries, visitors to Canada must hold a valid passport with at least six months’ validity.

In some cases, visitors may not require a visa, for example, if you are a citizen of the United States. You may, however, still need to present relevant documentation, like a valid passport and evidence of lawful entry into the US.

Travelers from South Africa, China, Russia, and other countries need a visa to travel to Canada regardless of their method of entry. Processing these visas may take upwards of three weeks. Visit the Government of Canada’s official website to find out if you will need to apply for a visa.

Is tipping customary in Canada?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in Canada. It's expected in restaurants, cafes and bars, and usually won’t be included in the bill.

People typically add 15-20% to the bill but feel free to tip a higher amount if you’ve enjoyed your experience. Tipping taxi drivers and valet attendants is also customary. Many bills in Canada do feature a tipping indicator under the subtotal, which is a handy method for choosing how much to leave. It's your choice, just remember that tipping in North America is culturally ingrained and wait staff are usually paid minimum wage, so understanding this and tipping accordingly is appreciated.

What is the internet access like Canada?

Canada’s internet is very good and it's easy to get access in most cities and towns.

Hotels, hostels and cafes are usually the best places to access the internet. It may be included with a booking or available at a small fee. Some fast food chains, cafes and restaurants have open wi-fi networks available, which are often accessible with a code from a purchase receipt. Be sure to keep an eye out for the international wi-fi symbol to connect.

Internet cafes are becoming less and less common in Canada, but some computer facilities (including in public libraries) are available in larger tourist areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Canada?

Cell phone coverage is generally very good in Canada, but it may be patchy in remote areas such as national parks. Depending on the service provider, coverage in remote areas can sometimes be non-existent.

Your best bet, if you have an unlocked phone, is to purchase a prepaid SIM card when you arrive in Canada for all your calling, texting, and data needs. Canada has a few network providers and while voice coverage can be patchy, cell data is generally good in tourist areas, so using internet calling apps like Skype and WhatsApp is often preferred.

If you are from the United States (or are also traveling in the US), there is often an option to upgrade or purchase a prepaid roaming plan with a US service provider to use across the border. Otherwise, you could activate global roaming when traveling through Canada. This can incur extremely high fees so be sure to check with your local service provider before you leave your home country to know the costs.

What are the toilets like in Canada?

Western-style, flushable toilets are the standard in Canada. Public toilet facilities are usually available in shopping malls and town centers and often labeled as washrooms. If you wish to use a washroom in a cafe or restaurant, expect to be told to make a purchase beforehand to gain access.

Can I drink the water in Canada?

Drinking water from taps in Canada is considered safe unless otherwise advised. Canada has some of the best tasting tap water in the world.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Canada?

Major credit cards are accepted by most retailers and restaurants in Canada. As in most countries, be sure to carry adequate cash for smaller purchases; however, it is becoming the norm to buy a coffee or make other small purchases on credit card.

What is ATM access like in Canada?

ATMs are very common in Canada so finding one won't be a problem in most cities or towns. They may not be as abundant in smaller towns and rural areas, so it’s wise to have enough cash before traveling anywhere too remote.

What is the weather like in Canada?

Many people imagine Canada as a winter wonderland with snow-capped mountains and ski resorts vying for their attention, but Canada’s weather is as diverse as its countryside. Summers can get very warm, sometimes reaching 95°F (35°C) and higher, while winters get very cold. It’s not uncommon to get down to -13°F (-25°C). Spring is usually warmer and more pleasant than autumn, which sees brisk and cool temperatures around the country though they’re made bearable by the rich orange and yellows of the trees.

Generally speaking, Canada’s weather fits into four main sections: the coasts, the Prairies (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba), central Canada and northern Canada. There are, of course, many more regional factors and thousands of microclimates, especially in mountain areas.

Expect milder summers and winters on the coast with temperatures not dropping much below 14°F (-10°C) and not rising much above 72°F (22°C). The winters are wetter here with the east coast seeing more rainfall, while Vancouver is an anomaly to the rest of Canada with more of an oceanic climate.

In the Prairies, the summers are hot and dry and winter is icy cold. There are long periods of snow, with Calgary experiencing around 54 days and 50 inches of snow, while Southern Alberta has a weird winter phenomenon called chinook winds. These are dry gusts that melt snow and raise temperatures by over 60 degrees in a matter of hours. Of the three largest cities in the Prairies, Winnipeg has the coldest winter days at 12°F (-11°C), compared to Calgary (-1°C/30°F) and Edmonton (-6°C/21°F), but also has the warmest summer days at 79°F (26°C), compared to both Calgary and Edmonton (23°C/73°F).

Central Canada enjoys humid summers and cooler winters, with some areas experiencing snow cover for almost six months of the year. As much of Canada’s interior enjoys a continental climate, winters are cold and the wind chill is brisk. Toronto hits around 80°F (27°C) on a hot summer’s day and 29°F (-1.5°C) in winter, while Montreal in summer hits 79°F (26°C) and 23°F (-5.3°C) in winter.  

Northern Canada is where temperatures really drop. The far reaches of the Northwest Territories (NWT) rarely rise above 32°F (0°C ) and can record temperatures below -49°F (-45°C). These extremes aren’t for everyone and it shows – of the three provinces to make up northern Canada (NWT, Yukon and Nunavut), their total population (around 120,000) is less than Canada’s 40th largest city.

What to wear in Canada

This depends on where you’re traveling. The diversity of seasons rules out a one-size-fits-all packing list, so our advice is to consider both the season and the activities you’d like to participate in. 

You’ll be able to get away with light clothing for most of the summer, like a shirt and shorts or light trousers, plus a jacket to wear in the cooler evenings. During spring and autumn, it’s best to bring layers. Temperatures can drop below freezing, especially at night, so if you’re checking out Vancouver’s nightlife or enjoying a nightcap in Toronto, it’s best to rug up. You’ll need to take the comfort dial up a notch in winter with thermal base layers, warm fleeces and jackets, and at least one wind-breaking outer layer to keep you warm. A beanie, scarf and neck warmer are all highly recommended.

Canada is an active destination so ensure you’re prepared with the right type of gear, including sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, UV protection and warm (but breathable) clothing that can be easily layered. If any water-based activities are on your to-do list, like kayaking or whitewater rafting, consider bringing a pair of dive boots or aqua shoes to save your feet from freezing water and sharp rocks.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Is Canada a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

In many regards, Canada is a world leader at recognizing LGBTQIA+ rights. It is consistently named as one of the most queer-friendly countries in the world.

Same-sex sexual activity has been lawful since 1969, and same-sex marriages have been legal nationwide since 2005. Anti-discrimination laws are extensive. They were passed in 1996 for sexual orientation and in 2017 for gender identity and expression. The Canadian government announced that it will add a third gender option to all government documents, including census forms and passports, from late 2017.

Canada is home to some of the largest Pride parades in all the world, with over 650,000 attending in Vancouver and over 1 million in Toronto. Toronto is also home to the Church and Wellesley neighborhood, which is known as an LGBT hotspot of the city. Similar LGBTQIA+ friendly neighborhoods exist in Vancouver (Davie Village), Montreal, (commercial district), and Ottawa (Bank Street); however, this is not to say that other neighborhoods are not as socially accepting.

This trip was amazing. We got so close to the bears it was shocking. I have always wanted to see a polar bear in the wild so this trip was a dream come true. Watching polar bears and wildlife from the rovers was definitely the highlight of the trip. We saw over 16 bears up close and afar. My flight seeing helicopter ride was cancelled due to weather. The lack of activity was tough with very few opportunities for hiking (because of the bears) and no gym at the Churchill hotel. We had a diverse group of ages, interests and abilities from all over the US and Canada. Some travelers had limited mobility but it didn't slow us down because the trip is not very active and suitable for anyone. This has to be the easiest way to safely view polar bears in the wild. Wanted to view polar bears and boy did we!

Meals Review

Like the hotels, the food in Winnipeg was excellent. The farewell dinner included a number of Canadian recipes I had never tried before. Breakfast at the Churchhill hotel was nice with hot eggs, bacon, potato and pancakes. Dinners in Churchill were at one of two restaurants with lots of local options like arctic char or bison. After dinner the restaurants transformed into local entertainment with a band or open mic night. Fun. 

Crew & Guides Review

Our guide was very knowledgeable about polar bears and arctic ecosystems. I learned a lot about polar bears that I didn't know before. Evening programs by locals in Churchill were a hoot.

You don't need to bring a jacket or boots as these are provided. The polar parka was very warm.

Accommodations Review

The Fort Garry Hotel is beautiful and centrally located in Winnipeg. The Chruchill Hotel was very basic, do not expect luxury. But it was clean and comfortable and warm.

We desired to see and photograph polar bears. Additionally, we got to see an Arctic Hare, moose from the helicopter. Would have liked to see Arctic fox and White Owl, but felt lucky to see the animals we did and as many polar bears as we did. Everyone was friendly and cheerful and just the right number of people with the activities and accommodations to be fun. We prefer small group trips and this fit into that category as the people were divided into small group vans/rovers with each having its own guide. It was also nice that the guides traded vehicles halfway through the day so we all got to know them both and share their information. The Trip Guide Book from Natural Habitat was EXCELLENT and covered all questions and gave excellent information.

All accommodations were very nice.

The Fort Gary Hotel Breakfast Buffet and Welcome Dinner were fabulous and way above our expectations.

Our trip leaders and guides were EXCELLENT....very knowledgeable and informative and extremely pleasant with a very good sense of humor. All the people we came in contact with at Natural Habitat were excellent.

Good group. Fantastic leader/guide. More than met trip expectations. Polar Rover experience was totally unique. Timing was terrific as we had a total count of 40 polar bears over our two days on the Rover. The size of the group was perfect. Mostly all seasoned travelers.

Winnipeg hotel was excellent. Lodging in Churchill was as top quality as can be had in a town of that size and with the conditions that they have to endure.

Our leader, guide Katie, was absolutely top notch. She was a daily ray of sunshine. Her knowledge of the area, the history, the wildlife was astounding. We rate her with an A+. Our driver, Stew, was warm, welcoming, and helpful besides being a terrific driver under difficult conditions.

Meals were more than adequate. [There were] many choices available; freshness and preparation were quite good.

Materials sent answered all the questions. The Adventure Specialist we worked with, Andrew, was quick with replies to questions and very helpful with getting all put together.

Go soon! With global warming, this opportunity may not be available, in the same manner, in the future.

Had the best humpback whale watching of my three trips to SE Alaska. Liked the variety of activities available from strenuous hikes for the super fit to easy ambles for the less ambitious. Lots of kayaking too. 

Most enjoyed Glacier Bay National Park with gorgeous mountain views, lots of wildlife, and glaciers. The weather was great as a bonus. Enjoyed the river trip at Haines with the chance to see lots of bald eagles. Olympic National Park was another highlight, just wish the weather had been better when we went to Hurricane Ridge where we really couldn't see any distance. Least enjoyed the stop in Ketchikan, maybe because I've been there twice before and it always rains hard, not just the misty rain which is to be expected in Alaska and adds an appropriate atmosphere.

I had sailed on Wilderness Discoverer before, so it was like coming home again.

The breakfast bacon on UnCruise ships is the best in the world, and I always eat more on my trips than I do all year at home. A big plate of perfectly ripe fruit available at the pre-breakfast made it easier to resist the two baked offerings that were there too. The variety and imaginative combinations of ingredients--who knew you could do so much with kale! Impressive how the single gluten intolerant guest had her requirements met at every meal.

Kelly was enthusiastic beyond words, and very knowledgeable. Our guide at Glacier Bay National Park who spent two days with us was a pleasure to have along, and I think she enjoyed us as much as we did her (sorry don't have her name) because we were a very receptive audience for all the information she had to share.

Adventure Specialist Andrew has arranged all my trips over the years, and he is as good as it gets. He even advised on which side of the ship was a better choice of cabin on this trip, and he was spot on.

Exceeded expectations. Expedition lead, Rab, led a great team. All were knowledgeable and great teachers. Plus all were accessible throughout the trip. Betty Lou and Linda were particularly outstanding but all were great. James added his diving and photography expertise as did Drew and Brian. Eryn was an outstanding naturalist and patient teacher. Captain and crew were friendly and helpful. Fabulous in all regards. Rab really set the tone and having the experience of Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn, and the others enhanced the experience. The handling of bear confrontation on shore showed exceptional knowledge, training and leadership. Very impressive.

The Sea Bird is old and cabins are what they are, but still really good.  Get fitted sheets. Easier on stewards and passengers. But vessel was great. We knew what to expect so no surprises. The common areas were more than adequate for the expedition.

Amazing work given the limitations of the galley. Breakfast and lunch were perfect to fuel us up and keep us energized. Appetizers were a highlight. I very much liked the portion size at dinner. Soup needs work. Too much of same dark base. Think miso or chowder, but minor. Great baked goods.  Service was A+++ from Val on down.

No one better than Rab, Betty Lou and Linda. Gold standard. Rab shared personal experiences and emotions and displayed encyclopedic knowledge of every subject. Clone him. Betty Lou's talk on her career was fabulous. The whole team was knowledgeable, personable, helpful, available, great in crisis and enthusiastic. How can one be with Rab and not get excited about the events or with Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn and not learn? 

Photography staff was first rate. Brian and Drew knew everything and explained it clearly. Divers, Jim and Lynn, added a whole different dimension to our experience. Local guides were essential to understanding Haida and Kwakwaka wakaw cultures. And the Watchmen gave such authenticity to our experience. Loved Ranger Molly. Wow!!!! No weak individual on this team.

Itinerary Review

Haida Gwaii, Gwai Hannas, Old Massett, and Alert Bay were strong cultural experiences which made the whole trip worthwhile. The nature walks were well chosen and instructive. Sometimes after dinner talks were repetitious, but small issue.

Zodiak tours were uniformly outstanding and exciting. The excursion into the sea near the Hobbit Hole was a memory for all time as was Rabs talk about Vitas Bering and George Stellars. Whew, all good!!! Glacier visits were well done, awesome, and sobering to see the impacts of climate change. Potlach dances were highlight also as was the ability to meet Jim Hart and Christian White. Legendary and inspiring. Gwaii Hannas was magical.

Andrew was, as always, excellent. Made our trip prep easy. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

Embrace the experience. Pack lighter/take less. Read some history like Muir's Travels in Alaska, history of decimation of tribes by European exposure and books on Northwest art.

We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides. Wonderful group to travel with, made some good friends. We wanted to see Alaska’s coast, would hate to travel by large ship. The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. Ketchikan...after peace and solitude, was too congested.

Given tight quarters well done. Slow shower drain, leaving toilet area wet, not my favorite.

Variety, flavors, presentation wonderful.

The enthusiasm and knowledge of all guides added greatly to the trip.

Baggage and transfer handled smoothly. Over emphasis on the boots. Needed once and ankle high was plenty.

A recent report by Global Newswire states that the adventure tourism market was valued at $297 billion in 2022 and is expected to surge to over $1,400 billion by 2032. This includes using AI to find accommodations, choose flights, and plan itineraries. Learn about local history and culture while paddling on the River Inn on a city rafting tour with Stubai Rafting or try Up Stream Surfing , a fun combination of river surfing and wakeboarding.

Best for: mountain biking A place that holds many accolades for its skiing facilities, glitzy Kitzbühel also flexes its muscles in summertime. Take biking, for example — the area has hosted a cycling marathon, Der Kitzbüheler Radmarathon , since 2021 and boasts one of the most challenging road ascents in Austria: the Kitzbüheler Horn. Mountain bikers will love the recently opened Sonnenrast trail or the single-track Hahnenkamm route, which runs all the way back to the town.

Paznaun-Ischgl

Best for: Alpine cuisine Cool air and rocky peaks see cyclists flock to the 25-mile-long Paznaun Valley in summer for events such as the E-Bike World Championship , but there's another draw here, too. Alongside Ischgl’s high-end restaurants are a number of rustic mountain huts, which from July to October offer seasonal dishes developed by local chefs. Traditional cooking is combined with gourmet flair, with last year’s highlights including Alpine beef with wild herbs, and nettle ravioli with barley, cheese and chicory. Also, be sure to taste the region's signature cheese, Paznauner almkäse (mountain cheese), which gets its distinct taste from alpine herbs.

Schladming-Dachstein

Best for: views With more than 300 lakes and 100 waterfalls, the Schladming-Dachstein region is one of the most water-rich in Austria — take a short hike to Spiegelsee on the Reiteralm to see the mountains mirrored on the glass-clear water of the lake. The region's standout feature, however, is the majestic Dachstein Mountain . The mountain station at 2,700m above sea level is easily reachable by cable car and offers views as far as the Czech Republic and Slovenia. A suspension bridge, a viewing platform and the snappily titled ‘Stairway to Nothingness’ await visitors here, while a shiny new cable car station is scheduled to open in May 2024.

St Anton am Arlberg

Best for: outdoor activities Known as the birthplace of Alpine skiing, St Anton am Arlberg has a fascinating history that’s shared with visitors year-round at the local Museum of St Anton am Arlberg . In warmer months, the town provides the perfect base from which to try a whole host of outdoor activities. Adrenaline-seekers can try paragliding or canyoning, while those seeking relaxation can unwind at the Mountain Yoga Festival St Anton — and those wanting a bit of everything can make for the action-packed Mountain Sports Festival . Whatever you go for, St Anton am Arlberg is easy to reach by train thanks to regular high-speed connections from Vienna and Zurich.

St Johann in Tirol

Best for: local charm St Johann in Tirol sits at the foot of the impressive Wilder Kaiser Mountains, alongside the charming villages of Oberndorf, Kirchdorf and Erpfendorf. There are ample activities on offer in the region, including hiking, road cycling and mountain biking, golf and swimming. For a true taste of the area, check out the many local farm shops and cafes to pick up outstanding fresh produce or visit the traditional St Johann Weekly Market to sample regional specialities such as brodakrapfen (a pasty-like snack filled with potato and cheese).

Zell am See-Kaprun

Best for: swimming and watersports On a calm day, the mountains around Lake Zell are reflected in the clear water below. Refreshing water temperatures and lakeside lidos make this Salzburgerland spot popular for swimming, as well as stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing. Not far away is the modern Tauern Spa , with 12 pools and a selection of wellness areas including 10 saunas and steam rooms — try the rock crystal sauna with different infusions such as mint and citrus or lemongrass and eucalyptus, and be sure to set aside ample time to take in the surrounding scenery.

Best for: nature The wide Zillertal valley is located to the east of Innsbruck. There are plenty of areas dedicated to outdoor sports here, including an extended ski season and year-round activities on the Hintertux Glacier , but also parts that remain almost untouched. The High Mountain Nature Park Zillertal Alps covers a 160sq-mile area and is home to thousands of animal species, including 500 kinds of butterfly, and more than 1,000 plant varieties. From May to October, themed hiking tours led by the experienced park guides — such as the ‘herb walk’ or wildlife watching — provide fascinating insights into the local flora and fauna.

I Just Rewatched Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure For The First Time In Years, And It Led To Me Falling Down A Time Travel Rabbit Hole

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is still excellent, but I am still trying to figure out how the time travel makes any sense.

I still remember going to a movie theater with my friends when I was 11 years old and seeing one of the best '80s movies , Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure , for the first time. I didn’t even want to see it, thinking I was too smart for the comedy about a couple of dumb guys. However, I was talked into it and ended up loving the movie. I few years later, I would reunite with the same friends to see Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey , and they were very much in my thoughts when I fell in love with Bill and Ted Face the Music so many years later.

Yet while I love the whole trilogy, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is still the best movie in the franchise , though it had been quite some time since I had actually seen it. I watched it so often as a kid I still know it by heart, but in sitting down to go through it again for a piece I was writing, I found myself being sucked in by the absolutely ridiculous time travel mechanics of the story and asking questions I'd never asked before. In many ways, the time travel is brilliant, and I know the movie is a comedy that isn’t meant to be taken too seriously. At the same time, I have some serious questions about how it all works that I can’t get out of my head.

Bill And Ted’s Timeline Is A Recursive Loop, But It Had To Start Somewhere

The premise of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, for all its time travel nonsense, is simple. Bill and Ted are destined to change the world, and so the future that depends on them sends George Carlin’s Rufus, the true hero of the movie , back in time to ensure the duo is not broken up due to a failing history grade, which sends Keanu Reees’ Ted off to military school, destroying their band before it has a chance to make the world a better place.

But then, how does that work exactly? The future where Bill and Ted have united the world already exists, which indicates the pair did not split up, but if time travel intervention is necessary to prevent the split, how did the future that works to prevent it come about in the first place? It’s a paradox of predestination, and it just doesn’t work.

Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey tells us that changing the past is at least theoretically possible. That’s what Joss Ackland's villain attempts to do, trying to kill Bill and Ted before they form their band, but there’s no indication in Excellent Adventure that anything has gone wrong in the past that requires Rufus’ intervention to fix. The implication is that Bill and Ted will naturally fail their history report if time travel doesn’t help them, which would mean that the future that helps them never comes to pass, right? Why is my nose bleeding?

How Does The “Clock In San Dimas” Keep Moving Forward If They Can Go Back In Time In The Future To Change The Present/Past

One of the key plot items in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is a ticking clock. It's a frequently used drama element, but it doesn't work here. Rufus explains to them that even though they have a time machine, it is still possible for them to miss their history report if they are not back in time to give it because their timeline continues marching forward while they are in the past. Ted is supposed to wind his watch, which he forgets to do, and the pair nearly miss the report. This makes zero sense.

Bill and Ted can travel into their own past, as they do, accidentally traveling to the night before their report where they meet themselves. While we never see it, we know they travel into their past again after their report is done to set up the Rube Goldberg series of events that allow them to break the historical figures out of jail. If they can go back in time and deliver a set of keys, why can’t they go back in time to give their history report?

Interacting with themselves in the past doesn’t cause any sort of paradox, as it does in other time travel stories. Even if there is a constantly-changing present moment for Bill and Ted that they are missing by not being around, they can just travel into the “past” by arriving there as they already do in the film. What was to stop them from, instead of time jumping to the next day, simply taking the historical figures home from the Circle K in their "past" and simply waiting for the next day? At least if they had done that it would explain how they had time to create a multi-person choreographed stage show with music and lights.

What’s the difference between going into the past to drop a set of keys and set up a tape recorder, and going to the past to give a history report? As long as the pair do go back and give the report, it shouldn’t matter when, from their perspective, they do it.

How Does Ted Know Rufus’ Name?

In the grand scheme of things, this last issue is a minor one, but it’s a smaller version of the same infinite loop problem that plagues the rest of the movie. George Carlin’s Rufus never introduces himself, and yet, Bill and Ted learn his name, when it is given to them… by Bill and Ted.

It’s called the bootstrap paradox, and it’s a problem because the information, Rufus’ name, has no clear origin. How did “future” Bill and Ted learn Rufus’ name? They got it from the future when they were “present” Bill and Ted, and the information continues to be passed forever in the loop, but it still doesn’t explain where it came from.

The ultimate answer to these questions is obviously “Who cares? It’s a funny movie.” If anything, the fact that the time travel doesn't work is a feature, not a bug. It's part of the comedy. Nobody other than me is being kept up at night trying to figure out how the time travel in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is supposed to work . Still, now that I’ve had these thoughts, I’m probably going to have them every time I watch the movie from now on.
