Culture and customs.

Canada’s aboriginal communities reside across the country, with the people of the First Nations and the Inuit in the north calling parts of Canada home. Like many indigenous peoples around the world, First Nations communities in Canada have an ongoing struggle to retain and protect their customs and way of life. Modern influences have had adverse impacts on their culture and lifestyle, yet many still actively live and promote a traditional way of life through tribal music, handicrafts, art, and clothing.

Anyone who has been to Canada will know that some aspects of the Canadian stereotype are actually very accurate. Well known for being welcoming, friendly, funny, and adventure-loving, Canadians generally do a good job of living up to their reputation. Large cities like Vancouver are proudly multicultural, and attitudes towards different ways of life are generally quite liberal. This is reflected in the variety of cuisines, shops, and people that occupy the city. Urban and rural residents alike typically remain active and love the outdoors. Hiking, cycling, canoeing, and snowboarding are all popular pastimes across the country.

Canada’s eastern reaches have a decidedly different quality to the west coast and retain much of their colonial heritage. The French-Canadian language, often called Quebecois, is widely spoken, and French-influenced food and music are very popular. History and government

The first nations.

It’s widely accepted that humans first settled in the area that is now Canada around 15,000 years ago, after traveling from what is now known as Russian Siberia. Russia and Northern America are thought to have once been connected by a land bridge until rising sea levels created the Bering Strait. Canada’s first inhabitants were likely hunter-gatherers, and it’s also widely agreed that in around 2500 BC, a second major wave of migration from Siberia brought the ancestors of the Inuit to Canada. In around 1000 BC, Thule communities from Alaska began traveling east into the Canadian Arctic.

By the late 15th century (around the time of European colonization), indigenous communities had spread beyond the Arctic regions to four main areas – the Pacific, the plains (now south-central Canada), the southern Ontario/St Lawrence River area, and the northeast woodlands.

Colonization

Both France and Britain competed fiercely for Canadian territory as colonists searched for mineral riches before establishing a lucrative fur trade. Many First Nations communities were displaced during this period and suffered from food and land shortages. The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 after hundreds of years of fighting, officially making Canada a British territory.

Bringing the territories together

Britain appointed governors across Canada to head up each colony, much to the French-speaking territories’ distress. The British North America Act was passed in 1867 and Canada became a self-governing state with a new set of rules. It was an improvement, but still not accepted by all. The priority was to gather all colonies under this one confederation. The iconic ‘Mounties’ were established to bring law and order to the ‘wild west’, which itself created conflict, especially with threatened First Nations peoples. In 1931 Canada was granted relative independence from the British Empire, giving it full legal autonomy and equal standing with England and other Commonwealth countries.

Independence and First Nations' progress

Canada's indigenous communities struggled through the 20th century and were only granted the right to vote in 1960. As discrimination and land rights tensions grew, a Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples called for a complete overhaul of government relations with the Indigenous population. An official Statement of Reconciliation from the Ministry of Indian and Northern Affairs was issued in 1998, which accepted responsibility for past injustices towards indigenous peoples. To this day, progress is still being made towards proper recognition and reconciliation of indigenous peoples in Canada.

Canada is still a member of the Commonwealth but the British monarch retains a purely ceremonial role. The country continues to flourish, with immigration from Europe and Asia leading to increased multiculturalism – more than 20% of Canada’s population was born overseas – while a resource boom has strengthened the economy. Canada is becoming increasingly known as a liberal, tolerant nation thanks to legalized marijuana use, same-sex marriage, universal health care, and some of the most liveable cities in the world.

Eating and drinking

Oh Canada, what a wondrous country of seasonal beauty and welcoming people. But what’s the food like? Well, you’re in luck – Canada has all the hearty, comforting, and sweet food you’ll need at any time of the year.

Things to eat in Canada

It’s a national treasure – French fries topped with a gloriously messy mix of gravy and cheese curds. There’s a range of combinations with different meats, chips, and sauces, all classed as ‘poutine’ (or, more generally, ‘loaded fries’). All in all, it’s the perfect hangover cure.

Vancouver is known for having one of the best restaurant scenes in the world and seafood is almost always on the menu. Feast on a fresh seafood banquet, try some inventive fusion cuisine, or grab a chowder for a quick bite.

3. Maple syrup

It comes as no surprise that maple syrup is super popular in Canada. Be sure to dose up your pancakes and include a side of bacon, just like the locals.

4. Beaver tails

No, they don't come from an actual beaver. Beaver tails are a stretched, fried dough – almost like a doughnut pizza – known as a bannock, topped with all kinds of sweet things, including cinnamon sugar, Nutella, banana, s’mores, and more.

5. Nanaimo bars

Named after its birthplace – the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island – this bar consists of three layers: a wafer, nut and coconut crumb base, flavored custard in the middle, and a chocolate ganache to top it off.

6. Butter tarts

You may have realized by now that Canada is full of sweet treats, but how about trying an indulgent butter tart? It’s a sweet pastry shell baked with a filling of butter, sugar, syrup, and egg – everything in moderation, right?

7. Boutique beer

The last few years have seen microbreweries pop up all over Canada. Whether you visit a microbrewery that brews chocolate-flavored beer or dine at a restaurant with a local beer menu, a Canadian boutique beer is definitely worth trying.

8. Caesar cocktail

If beer isn’t your thing, what about Canada’s version of a Bloody Mary? Combine vodka, clamato juice, hot sauce, and lime for a unique briny flavor. Throw in a stalk of celery and you’re set – don’t knock it ‘til you try it! Read more about foods to try in Canada

Geography and environment

Canada is big. And we mean huge. This may seem obvious when looking at a map, but you really feel it when you're out there road-tripping. With such a large land mass, it comes as no surprise that the environment varies depending on which area of Canada you are traveling in.

Sitting between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada shares a long land border with the United States in the south and Alaska (US) and Greenland in the north. Mountains, forests, and woodlands can be found throughout the country, with relatively flat, arable plains dotted around too. There’s a lot of ice and tundra in the Arctic North. The country’s unique geography is one of the many reasons that this country is so well-traveled and loved by tourists, but this can pose a risk, notably for drivers. Microclimates along mountain passes, like the Glacier National Park between BC and Alberta, are known for notorious weather conditions. Towns on either side can appear clear and calm, while the national park itself is in the middle of a snowstorm.

Canada’s cities are widespread, well-populated, and built-up, though not overly crowded. Expect skyscrapers, malls, the odd traffic jam, and all the modern conveniences. Smaller communities exist in more remote areas, with quaint villages on both coasts relying on fishing, tourism, and agriculture as main sources of income. Expect a slower pace of life and much less buzz than in the city.

Outdoor experiences

Majestic mountains.

The Rocky Mountains of Canada are famous for a reason – their imposing and rugged beauty is unforgettable. Take in the epic landscapes while hiking, and don't forget to keep a camera handy to capture the best panoramas.

Sensational 'snowscapades'

Make the most of Canada's abundance of snow by getting out there in winter and having some fun. Start a snowball fight (preferably not with strangers), make some snow angels, and channel your inner child.

Animal encounters

Keep watch for deer, bears, moose, caribou, mountain goats, bald eagles, and timber wolves while hiking through the wilds of Jasper National Park in Alberta. Seeing grizzly and black bears in their natural habitat will take your breath away.

Giant glaciers

Be astounded by the immense size and beauty of Canada's gigantic glaciers. Take a thrilling ride on an ice mobile to experience things up close, or perhaps opt for a hike to the toe of the mighty Athabasca glacier.

Canada may be home to the largest mall in the Americas (West Edmonton Mall), but the shopping experience certainly doesn't end there. The diversity of Canada's population is reflected in the eclectic mix of boutique stores stocking unique artisan wares, modern art, and more. Major cities like Vancouver have an abundance of interesting boutiques, galleries, and market-style centres like Granville Island. Smaller towns are great for locally produced gourmet food, wine, and quirky kitsch souvenirs. The Chinatown areas of major Canadian cities offer a great shopping experience with good markets and cheap eats.

Canada’s federal goods and services tax (GST) adds 5 percent to most transactions and most provinces also charge an additional tax to have a combined harmonized sales tax (HST), usually around 10–15 percent in total. Expect most, if not all, products to have this already included in the marked price.

It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Festivals and events

Canada knows how to put on a show, be it in nature or the cities. Depending on the time of the year, these are some of the festivals and events you can expect to come across:

Calgary Stampede

This 10-day hoedown features rodeos, parades, barbecues, and more cowboy hats than you can shake a stick at. The locals call it the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth and it has been running in Calgary, Alberta, since 1912.

Montreal International Jazz Festival

Swap your boot scootin’ for some toe-tapping as more than 3000 performers from over 30 nations entertain millions during this annual celebration of jazz. Over 5500 pounds of French fries are consumed each year, which is fitting given Montreal is the hub of French-speaking Canada.

Vancouver Festival of Light

This dazzling display of fireworks is not to be missed. Technicians gather from across the world to compete and put on the best and most engaging display. It’s the longest-running offshore fireworks competition in the world.

You'll know that it's Canada Day , no matter where you are in Canada. The locals celebrate this national holiday with parades, fireworks, parties, concerts, and barbecues, so be sure to get into the maple-leaf spirit.

If you find yourself in Ottawa or greater Ontario in early February, chances are there’ll be a winter festival like Winterlude happening. Canada’s capital turns into a majestic winter wonderland and the focal point is Rideau Canal, which turns into the world’s largest skating rink at 4.8 miles long.

Quebec Winter Carnival

This festival even has its own mascot – a giant, tuque-wearing snow figure called Bonhomme Carnaval – who embodies the ‘joie de vivre’ (or ‘joy of living’) during winter. Come for Bonhomme and stay for parades, snow sculptures, ice skating, and more.

When is the best time to visit Canada?

Canada's vast land mass makes for beautiful scenery and varying climate conditions. December, January and February are the coldest months and traveling can be difficult at times due to the occasional road closure or snowstorm. That said, this time of year is ideal for skiing, snowboarding and all your winter delights.

June, July and August are the warmest months. They’re perfect for outdoor activities like rafting, hiking, camping and canoeing. Tourist hotspots and other popular places will be much busier than in other months due to warmer temperatures.

While not typically as warm as the summer months, May and September still offer great conditions for traveling and sightseeing without the crowds.

Do I need a visa to travel to Canada?

Many nationalities are able to travel to Canada without a visa, provided they obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before arriving. This includes citizens of Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan, France and many others. Like most countries, visitors to Canada must hold a valid passport with at least six months’ validity.

In some cases, visitors may not require a visa, for example, if you are a citizen of the United States. You may, however, still need to present relevant documentation, like a valid passport and evidence of lawful entry into the US.

Travelers from South Africa, China, Russia, and other countries need a visa to travel to Canada regardless of their method of entry. Processing these visas may take upwards of three weeks. Visit the Government of Canada’s official website to find out if you will need to apply for a visa.

The is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Canada?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in Canada. It's expected in restaurants, cafes and bars, and usually won’t be included in the bill.

People typically add 15-20% to the bill but feel free to tip a higher amount if you’ve enjoyed your experience. Tipping taxi drivers and valet attendants is also customary. Many bills in Canada do feature a tipping indicator under the subtotal, which is a handy method for choosing how much to leave. It's your choice, just remember that tipping in North America is culturally ingrained and wait staff are usually paid minimum wage, so understanding this and tipping accordingly is appreciated.

What is the internet access like Canada?

Canada’s internet is very good and it's easy to get access in most cities and towns.

Hotels, hostels and cafes are usually the best places to access the internet. It may be included with a booking or available at a small fee. Some fast food chains, cafes and restaurants have open wi-fi networks available, which are often accessible with a code from a purchase receipt. Be sure to keep an eye out for the international wi-fi symbol to connect.

Internet cafes are becoming less and less common in Canada, but some computer facilities (including in public libraries) are available in larger tourist areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Canada?

Cell phone coverage is generally very good in Canada, but it may be patchy in remote areas such as national parks. Depending on the service provider, coverage in remote areas can sometimes be non-existent.

Your best bet, if you have an unlocked phone, is to purchase a prepaid SIM card when you arrive in Canada for all your calling, texting, and data needs. Canada has a few network providers and while voice coverage can be patchy, cell data is generally good in tourist areas, so using internet calling apps like Skype and WhatsApp is often preferred.

If you are from the United States (or are also traveling in the US), there is often an option to upgrade or purchase a prepaid roaming plan with a US service provider to use across the border. Otherwise, you could activate global roaming when traveling through Canada. This can incur extremely high fees so be sure to check with your local service provider before you leave your home country to know the costs.

What are the toilets like in Canada?

Western-style, flushable toilets are the standard in Canada. Public toilet facilities are usually available in shopping malls and town centers and often labeled as washrooms. If you wish to use a washroom in a cafe or restaurant, expect to be told to make a purchase beforehand to gain access.

What will it cost for a...?

Canada’s unit of currency is the Canadian dollar (CAD). Prices here are approximate averages.

Cup of coffee = CAD $4.80

Local bus fare = CAD $3.30

Budget takeaway meal = CAD $13.00

Restaurant meal = CAD $23.00 - $64.00

Can I drink the water in Canada?

Drinking water from taps in Canada is considered safe unless otherwise advised. Canada has some of the best tasting tap water in the world.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Canada?

Major credit cards are accepted by most retailers and restaurants in Canada. As in most countries, be sure to carry adequate cash for smaller purchases; however, it is becoming the norm to buy a coffee or make other small purchases on credit card.

What is ATM access like in Canada?

ATMs are very common in Canada so finding one won't be a problem in most cities or towns. They may not be as abundant in smaller towns and rural areas, so it’s wise to have enough cash before traveling anywhere too remote.

What is the weather like in Canada?

Many people imagine Canada as a winter wonderland with snow-capped mountains and ski resorts vying for their attention, but Canada’s weather is as diverse as its countryside. Summers can get very warm, sometimes reaching 95°F (35°C) and higher, while winters get very cold. It’s not uncommon to get down to -13°F (-25°C). Spring is usually warmer and more pleasant than autumn, which sees brisk and cool temperatures around the country though they’re made bearable by the rich orange and yellows of the trees.

Generally speaking, Canada’s weather fits into four main sections: the coasts, the Prairies (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba), central Canada and northern Canada. There are, of course, many more regional factors and thousands of microclimates, especially in mountain areas.

Expect milder summers and winters on the coast with temperatures not dropping much below 14°F (-10°C) and not rising much above 72°F (22°C). The winters are wetter here with the east coast seeing more rainfall, while Vancouver is an anomaly to the rest of Canada with more of an oceanic climate.

In the Prairies, the summers are hot and dry and winter is icy cold. There are long periods of snow, with Calgary experiencing around 54 days and 50 inches of snow, while Southern Alberta has a weird winter phenomenon called chinook winds. These are dry gusts that melt snow and raise temperatures by over 60 degrees in a matter of hours. Of the three largest cities in the Prairies, Winnipeg has the coldest winter days at 12°F (-11°C), compared to Calgary (-1°C/30°F) and Edmonton (-6°C/21°F), but also has the warmest summer days at 79°F (26°C), compared to both Calgary and Edmonton (23°C/73°F).

Central Canada enjoys humid summers and cooler winters, with some areas experiencing snow cover for almost six months of the year. As much of Canada’s interior enjoys a continental climate, winters are cold and the wind chill is brisk. Toronto hits around 80°F (27°C) on a hot summer’s day and 29°F (-1.5°C) in winter, while Montreal in summer hits 79°F (26°C) and 23°F (-5.3°C) in winter.

Northern Canada is where temperatures really drop. The far reaches of the Northwest Territories (NWT) rarely rise above 32°F (0°C ) and can record temperatures below -49°F (-45°C). These extremes aren’t for everyone and it shows – of the three provinces to make up northern Canada (NWT, Yukon and Nunavut), their total population (around 120,000) is less than Canada’s 40th largest city.

What to wear in Canada

This depends on where you’re traveling. The diversity of seasons rules out a one-size-fits-all packing list, so our advice is to consider both the season and the activities you’d like to participate in.

You’ll be able to get away with light clothing for most of the summer, like a shirt and shorts or light trousers, plus a jacket to wear in the cooler evenings. During spring and autumn, it’s best to bring layers. Temperatures can drop below freezing, especially at night, so if you’re checking out Vancouver’s nightlife or enjoying a nightcap in Toronto, it’s best to rug up. You’ll need to take the comfort dial up a notch in winter with thermal base layers, warm fleeces and jackets, and at least one wind-breaking outer layer to keep you warm. A beanie, scarf and neck warmer are all highly recommended.

Canada is an active destination so ensure you’re prepared with the right type of gear, including sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, UV protection and warm (but breathable) clothing that can be easily layered. If any water-based activities are on your to-do list, like kayaking or whitewater rafting, consider bringing a pair of dive boots or aqua shoes to save your feet from freezing water and sharp rocks.

For a more comprehensive list on what to wear and what to pack for Canada, be sure to check the packing list included in each trip’s Essential Trip Information.

Is Canada a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

In many regards, Canada is a world leader at recognizing LGBTQIA+ rights. It is consistently named as one of the most queer-friendly countries in the world.

Same-sex sexual activity has been lawful since 1969, and same-sex marriages have been legal nationwide since 2005. Anti-discrimination laws are extensive. They were passed in 1996 for sexual orientation and in 2017 for gender identity and expression. The Canadian government announced that it will add a third gender option to all government documents, including census forms and passports, from late 2017.

Canada is home to some of the largest Pride parades in all the world, with over 650,000 attending in Vancouver and over 1 million in Toronto. Toronto is also home to the Church and Wellesley neighborhood, which is known as an LGBT hotspot of the city. Similar LGBTQIA+ friendly neighborhoods exist in Vancouver (Davie Village), Montreal, (commercial district), and Ottawa (Bank Street); however, this is not to say that other neighborhoods are not as socially accepting.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Canada accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries where possible.

Canada is making clear progress on aiding those with disabilities, especially travelers with mobility issues. Many public buildings around Canada’s major cities and tourist zones have access to lifts and ramps, while pedestrian crossings often have sloping curbs.

For more logistical information on air, bus, rail and ferry transportation, visit the Canadian federal government’s Travel portal.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Here is a general guide to the best time to visit Canada based on the season:

Summer (June-August): This is the peak tourist season in Canada, especially in popular destinations such as Banff, Vancouver, and Toronto. The weather is warm and sunny, and many outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and water sports are available. However, this is also the busiest and most expensive time of year, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

Autumn / Fall (September-November): Fall is a beautiful time to visit Canada, especially if you want to see the vibrant colors of the changing leaves. The crowds start to thin out, and the weather is still pleasant in many areas. Fall is also a great time for wildlife viewing, as many animals prepare for the winter months.

Winter (December-February): Canada is known for its long and cold winters, but this season can also be a great time to visit, especially if you enjoy winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. This is a great time for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling, and it's also a good time to visit some of the country's top attractions before the summer crowds arrive.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Canada depends on your personal preferences and what you want to see and do during your trip. It's always a good idea to research the weather patterns and seasonal events in the specific region you plan to visit and plan accordingly.

Whether or not you need a visa to visit Canada depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Here are the general guidelines:

These countries include the United States, most European countries, Australia, and Japan, among others. However, you still need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before you travel to Canada by air.

Countries requiring a visitor visa: If you are a citizen of a country that is not exempt from the requirement of obtaining a visitor visa, you need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before you can travel to Canada. The application process involves submitting your passport, a completed application form, and other supporting documents to the Canadian visa office in your country. Other types of visas: If you are traveling to Canada for a specific purpose such as work, study, or to join a family member who is already in Canada, you may need to apply for a different type of visa. These include work permits, study permits, and family sponsorship visas, among others. The application process and requirements for these visas can vary, so it's important to consult the Canadian government website or contact the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate for more information.

It's important to note that the visa application process can take several weeks or even months, so it's best to apply well in advance of your intended travel date. You should also make sure that you meet all the requirements for entry into Canada, including having a valid passport and any necessary travel documents.

As of May 2023, there are no mandatory vaccinations required for visitors to enter Canada. However, it's recommended that travelers are up-to-date on routine vaccinations such as measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and influenza.

Additionally, travelers should consult with their healthcare provider to determine if any additional vaccinations are recommended based on their individual health status and travel itinerary. For example, the Public Health Agency of Canada recommends that travelers receive the hepatitis A and B vaccines if they plan to spend extended periods of time in rural areas, work in healthcare or emergency services, or have sexual contact with new partners while in Canada.

Craft Beer: Canada has a thriving craft beer scene, with microbreweries and brewpubs scattered throughout the country. You can sample a wide range of beer styles, including lagers, ales, stouts, and IPAs, each with its own unique flavors and characteristics.

These are just a few highlights of Canadian cuisine, which varies from region to region. Each province and territory has its own local specialties and culinary traditions, making Canada a delightful destination for food enthusiasts seeking diverse and delicious flavors.

Can I drink the tap water in Canada?

Yes, tap water in Canada is generally safe to drink. The country has stringent regulations and robust water treatment systems to ensure the quality and safety of its tap water. Municipalities are responsible for monitoring and treating the water supply to meet national health standards.

In most cities and towns across Canada, tap water undergoes extensive filtration, disinfection, and testing processes to ensure it meets or exceeds the guidelines set by Health Canada. The water is regularly tested for bacteria, viruses, and chemicals to maintain its quality.

However, it's important to note that there can be slight variations in water quality between different regions or municipalities. In some remote or rural areas, water sources may be from wells or local reservoirs, and additional precautions may be necessary. It's advisable to check with the local authorities or your accommodation provider to get the most up-to-date information about the tap water quality in the specific area you plan to visit.

If you have any concerns or prefer the taste of filtered or bottled water, those options are readily available for purchase in supermarkets, convenience stores, and other retail outlets throughout the country.

In summary, while tap water in Canada is generally safe to drink, it's always a good idea to stay informed about the specific water quality in the area you're visiting and take necessary precautions if needed.

Multiculturalism: Canada is known for being a welcoming and multicultural country. You can experience a wide range of cultures, cuisines, and languages in cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

Friendly People: Canadians are known for being friendly and welcoming to visitors. You'll likely encounter locals who are happy to help you find your way around or give you recommendations for things to do.

Overall, Canada offers a unique blend of natural beauty, multiculturalism, adventure, wildlife, and friendly people that make it a great destination for travellers.

What's the best way to travel to Canada?

There are several ways to get to Canada, depending on your location and travel preferences. Here are some of the most common methods of transportation:

By air: Flying is the most common way to get to Canada, especially if you are coming from a different continent. Canada has several international airports, with the largest ones located in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Major airlines offer direct flights to these cities from many destinations around the world.

By land: If you are coming from the United States, you can cross the border into Canada by car, bus, or train. There are several border crossings throughout the country, and the process is relatively straightforward, although you will need a valid passport or other travel documents.

By sea: Canada has several major ports, and some cruise lines offer trips to Canadian cities such as Halifax, Quebec City, and Vancouver. This is a great option if you want to combine your trip to Canada with a cruise vacation.

By train: If you are already in Canada, traveling by train is a convenient and scenic option. VIA Rail Canada operates passenger trains that connect major cities throughout the country, with routes that traverse the Canadian Rockies, the Prairies, and the East Coast.

No matter how you choose to get to Canada, it's important to make sure you have the necessary travel documents, including a valid passport and any required visas or permits. You should also check the entry requirements and travel restrictions for your country of origin and for Canada, as these may change depending on the current public health situation and other factors.

Adventure with Confidence

Past adventurers.

We used Discover Canada Tours for our trip to Whistler BC. The views were spectacular and our bus driver / tour guide (Joe Bitgood) was awesome…very knowledgeable on the history of BC and it’s geology. Would highly recommend this excursion and Discover Canada.

5-stars

Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Value

I took the Whistler sightseeing tour with Joe as our guide, it was really great! Joe was very friendly and helpful, informative and knowledgeable about BC and its history; he told us interesting tidbits and stories about the province and Whistler/Blackcomb. I enjoyed being able to do my own thing on the tour, Whistler was beautiful! Thanks again to Joe and Discover Canada Tours!

My family and I booked 4 tours with this company and the first one was by far the best one. Special thanks goes out to Joe Bitgood for taking care of us and ensuring comfort throughout the day while also delivering the true history of British Columbia.

The tour was great! Our tour guide Meaghan was the best. Very nice and knowledgeable. She was funny too! Highly recommended!

Temperature & Rainfall

Timing Canada Wildlife Tours

Adventure vacations in Canada operate primarily in the northern hemisphere’s spring, summer and fall. Plan your trip to see polar bears in Canada for peak wildlife migrations in October or November. For a Canada adventure tour in the High Arctic, the summer months are the only option, for milder weather. And for great bear rainforest tourism, or if you are seeking a coastal cruise, spring and fall offer the most availability since the ships position to/from Alaska and the Arctic regions.

Note that the climate data referenced above is for Vancouver and therefore representative of a west coast Canada trip. Temperatures for an eastern Canada adventure, around Newfoundland, are cooler but have less average rainfall.

What Travelers Say About Their Adventure Trips in Canada

This trip was amazing. We got so close to the bears it was shocking. I have always wanted to see a polar bear in the wild so this trip was a dream come true. AdventureSmith answered all my questions, and I had a lot of questions. The pre-departure information was extensive and packing lists were spot on. The trip was seamless.

We felt lucky to see the animals we did and as many polar bears as we did. The trip preparation by AdventureSmith was excellent. We have used AdventureSmith a number of times and have been very satisfied with their service, and have recommended them to our family and friends.

More than met trip expectations. Polar Rover experience was totally unique. The Adventure Specialist we worked with, Andrew, was quick with replies to questions and very helpful with getting all put together.

Most enjoyed Glacier Bay National Park with gorgeous mountain views, lots of wildlife, and glaciers. Liked the variety of activities available from strenuous hikes for the super fit to easy ambles for the less ambitious.

Exceeded expectations. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides.

This trip was amazing. We got so close to the bears it was shocking. I have always wanted to see a polar bear in the wild so this trip was a dream come true. Watching polar bears and wildlife from the rovers was definitely the highlight of the trip. We saw over 16 bears up close and afar. My flight seeing helicopter ride was cancelled due to weather. The lack of activity was tough with very few opportunities for hiking (because of the bears) and no gym at the Churchill hotel. We had a diverse group of ages, interests and abilities from all over the US and Canada. Some travelers had limited mobility but it didn't slow us down because the trip is not very active and suitable for anyone. This has to be the easiest way to safely view polar bears in the wild. Wanted to view polar bears and boy did we!

Meals Review

Like the hotels, the food in Winnipeg was excellent. The farewell dinner included a number of Canadian recipes I had never tried before. Breakfast at the Churchhill hotel was nice with hot eggs, bacon, potato and pancakes. Dinners in Churchill were at one of two restaurants with lots of local options like arctic char or bison. After dinner the restaurants transformed into local entertainment with a band or open mic night. Fun.

Crew & Guides Review

Our guide was very knowledgeable about polar bears and arctic ecosystems. I learned a lot about polar bears that I didn't know before. Evening programs by locals in Churchill were a hoot.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

AdventureSmith answered all my questions, and I had a lot of questions. The pre-departure information was extensive and packing lists were spot on. The trip was seamless.

Traveler Advice

You don't need to bring a jacket or boots as these are provided. The polar parka was very warm.

Accommodations Review

The Fort Garry Hotel is beautiful and centrally located in Winnipeg. The Chruchill Hotel was very basic, do not expect luxury. But it was clean and comfortable and warm.

We desired to see and photograph polar bears. Additionally, we got to see an Arctic Hare, moose from the helicopter. Would have liked to see Arctic fox and White Owl, but felt lucky to see the animals we did and as many polar bears as we did. Everyone was friendly and cheerful and just the right number of people with the activities and accommodations to be fun. We prefer small group trips and this fit into that category as the people were divided into small group vans/rovers with each having its own guide. It was also nice that the guides traded vehicles halfway through the day so we all got to know them both and share their information. The Trip Guide Book from Natural Habitat was EXCELLENT and covered all questions and gave excellent information.

All accommodations were very nice.

The Fort Gary Hotel Breakfast Buffet and Welcome Dinner were fabulous and way above our expectations.

Our trip leaders and guides were EXCELLENT....very knowledgeable and informative and extremely pleasant with a very good sense of humor. All the people we came in contact with at Natural Habitat were excellent.

Transportation Review

Transportation was excellent and the people who met us and got us to our destinations were EXCELLENT and very pleasant and accommodating.

The trip preparation by AdventureSmith was excellent. We have used AdventureSmith a number of times and have been very satisfied with their service, and have recommended them to our family and friends.

Have a wonderful time....it was totally enjoyable.

Good group. Fantastic leader/guide. More than met trip expectations. Polar Rover experience was totally unique. Timing was terrific as we had a total count of 40 polar bears over our two days on the Rover. The size of the group was perfect. Mostly all seasoned travelers.

Winnipeg hotel was excellent. Lodging in Churchill was as top quality as can be had in a town of that size and with the conditions that they have to endure.

Our leader, guide Katie, was absolutely top notch. She was a daily ray of sunshine. Her knowledge of the area, the history, the wildlife was astounding. We rate her with an A+. Our driver, Stew, was warm, welcoming, and helpful besides being a terrific driver under difficult conditions.

Meals were more than adequate. [There were] many choices available; freshness and preparation were quite good.

Materials sent answered all the questions. The Adventure Specialist we worked with, Andrew, was quick with replies to questions and very helpful with getting all put together.

Go soon! With global warming, this opportunity may not be available, in the same manner, in the future.

Had the best humpback whale watching of my three trips to SE Alaska. Liked the variety of activities available from strenuous hikes for the super fit to easy ambles for the less ambitious. Lots of kayaking too.

Most enjoyed Glacier Bay National Park with gorgeous mountain views, lots of wildlife, and glaciers. The weather was great as a bonus. Enjoyed the river trip at Haines with the chance to see lots of bald eagles. Olympic National Park was another highlight, just wish the weather had been better when we went to Hurricane Ridge where we really couldn't see any distance. Least enjoyed the stop in Ketchikan, maybe because I've been there twice before and it always rains hard, not just the misty rain which is to be expected in Alaska and adds an appropriate atmosphere.

I had sailed on Wilderness Discoverer before, so it was like coming home again.

The breakfast bacon on UnCruise ships is the best in the world, and I always eat more on my trips than I do all year at home. A big plate of perfectly ripe fruit available at the pre-breakfast made it easier to resist the two baked offerings that were there too. The variety and imaginative combinations of ingredients--who knew you could do so much with kale! Impressive how the single gluten intolerant guest had her requirements met at every meal.

Kelly was enthusiastic beyond words, and very knowledgeable. Our guide at Glacier Bay National Park who spent two days with us was a pleasure to have along, and I think she enjoyed us as much as we did her (sorry don't have her name) because we were a very receptive audience for all the information she had to share.

Adventure Specialist Andrew has arranged all my trips over the years, and he is as good as it gets. He even advised on which side of the ship was a better choice of cabin on this trip, and he was spot on.

Exceeded expectations. Expedition lead, Rab, led a great team. All were knowledgeable and great teachers. Plus all were accessible throughout the trip. Betty Lou and Linda were particularly outstanding but all were great. James added his diving and photography expertise as did Drew and Brian. Eryn was an outstanding naturalist and patient teacher. Captain and crew were friendly and helpful. Fabulous in all regards. Rab really set the tone and having the experience of Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn, and the others enhanced the experience. The handling of bear confrontation on shore showed exceptional knowledge, training and leadership. Very impressive.

The Sea Bird is old and cabins are what they are, but still really good.  Get fitted sheets. Easier on stewards and passengers. But vessel was great. We knew what to expect so no surprises. The common areas were more than adequate for the expedition.

Amazing work given the limitations of the galley. Breakfast and lunch were perfect to fuel us up and keep us energized. Appetizers were a highlight. I very much liked the portion size at dinner. Soup needs work. Too much of same dark base. Think miso or chowder, but minor. Great baked goods.  Service was A+++ from Val on down.

No one better than Rab, Betty Lou and Linda. Gold standard. Rab shared personal experiences and emotions and displayed encyclopedic knowledge of every subject. Clone him. Betty Lou's talk on her career was fabulous. The whole team was knowledgeable, personable, helpful, available, great in crisis and enthusiastic. How can one be with Rab and not get excited about the events or with Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn and not learn?

Photography staff was first rate. Brian and Drew knew everything and explained it clearly. Divers, Jim and Lynn, added a whole different dimension to our experience. Local guides were essential to understanding Haida and Kwakwaka wakaw cultures. And the Watchmen gave such authenticity to our experience. Loved Ranger Molly. Wow!!!! No weak individual on this team.

Itinerary Review

Haida Gwaii, Gwai Hannas, Old Massett, and Alert Bay were strong cultural experiences which made the whole trip worthwhile. The nature walks were well chosen and instructive. Sometimes after dinner talks were repetitious, but small issue.

Zodiak tours were uniformly outstanding and exciting. The excursion into the sea near the Hobbit Hole was a memory for all time as was Rabs talk about Vitas Bering and George Stellars. Whew, all good!!! Glacier visits were well done, awesome, and sobering to see the impacts of climate change. Potlach dances were highlight also as was the ability to meet Jim Hart and Christian White. Legendary and inspiring. Gwaii Hannas was magical.

Andrew was, as always, excellent. Made our trip prep easy. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

Embrace the experience. Pack lighter/take less. Read some history like Muir's Travels in Alaska, history of decimation of tribes by European exposure and books on Northwest art.

  • A Remarkable Journey to Alaska, British Columbia & Haida Gwaii
  • National Geographic Sea Bird

We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides. Wonderful group to travel with, made some good friends. We wanted to see Alaska’s coast, would hate to travel by large ship. The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. Ketchikan...after peace and solitude, was too congested.

Given tight quarters well done. Slow shower drain, leaving toilet area wet, not my favorite.

Variety, flavors, presentation wonderful.

The enthusiasm and knowledge of all guides added greatly to the trip.

Baggage and transfer handled smoothly. Over emphasis on the boots. Needed once and ankle high was plenty.

20 Best Places for Adventure Travel in the World

Published on April 14, 2024 at 8:21 am by Talha Zubair in Lists , News

This article looks at the 20 best places for adventure travel in the world. If you wish to skip our detailed analysis of Adventure Tourism and AI, you may go ahead to 5 Best Places for Adventure Travel in the World .

You might be blown away when you realize that the first wave of COVID-19 was over 4 years ago. Such was the impact of this disease on our lives that it feels as though we’re still stuck in the eye of the storm. However, as of 2023, WHO has declared an end to the disease as a public health emergency, meaning that the UN is ready to move on, and so should we.

One of the many grave impacts of COVID-19 was its impact on mobility. The disease compelled students, office workers, and even businesses to switch to remote setups in the space of weeks. Although there are many who have welcomed this change, cherishing the ability to spend increased time with their families, it also resulted in making a vast number of people shrink further and further into the confines of their homes.

Even after restrictions were lifted all over the world, people continued to embrace their mundane and monotonous routines. The comfort of lying on our feather beds, pinned under the embrace of a warm blanket is an incentive too welcoming to ignore.

This lassitude has been visible in global tourism activity as well. According to UNWTO , global tourist arrivals in 2023 were still just 88% of 2019 volumes. Similarly, revenue generated through international tourism was $1.4 trillion in 2023 as compared to $1.5 Trillion in 2019, despite significant inflation between these periods. However, trends show that 2024 is the year when international tourism activity will surpass pre-COVID numbers. UNWTO has predicted that tourism in 2024 will grow to 2% over 2019 levels.

Adventure Tourism

While tourism is on the rise in general, adventure tourism in particular has gained a lot of traction. A recent report by Global Newswire states that the adventure tourism market was valued at $297 billion in 2022 and is expected to surge to over $1,400 billion by 2032. The Asia-Pacific region is predicted to have the highest growth during this period as travelers from both inside and outside the region look to explore its various adventure sites.

There is nothing quite like the sensation of adrenaline pumping through your veins as you venture out into nature. The allure of adventure travel isn’t simply that it takes you to places that allow your mind to drift away from the monotony of our mundane lives, but also that it immerses us into scenes and situations that ignite our sense of wonder.

Although adventure tourism is often associated with death-defying feats such as summitting Mount Everest or saddling on the back of an orca, it encapsulates a much wider ring of activities. In essence, adventure travel is any form of tourism that involves stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Thus, it is not limited to any particular demographic. In fact, The Washington Post states that one of the leading demographics fueling the growth of adventure tourism are women over 40 years of age.

AI in Tourism

In the past, tourists used to meticulously plan out various phases of their vacation. While the primary reason for this was to be mindful of costs, knowing what each leg of your adventure entails kind of spoils the surprise. Presently however, people have begun to make trips with much looser itineraries, and a key reason of this is the use of AI tools in planning trips.

Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG ) released their 2024 travel predictions earlier this year and revealed that 52% of travelers want to book trips where the destination remains a mystery until they arrive. Moreover, Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG) also stated that 48% of travelers now trust AI to plan their trips. This highlights the fact that the idea of venturing into unchartered waters is still a proposition that excites most travelers. Using AI tools, such as the AI Trip Planner launched by Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG), tourists can depart from the well-trodden paths of Hollywood and instead break bread on the shores of Valinor.

Similarly, Expedia Group Inc (NASDAQ: EXPE ) released their Unpack 24 report and reported a similar trend with regards to AI. Expedia Group Inc (NASDAQ: EXPE) reported that nearly 50% of their survey respondents showed a willingness to plan trips using AI. This includes using AI to find accommodations, choose flights, and plan itineraries. It is worth noting that Expedia Group Inc (NASDAQ: EXPE) has also integrated AI conversational capabilities into its app as of 2023.

Travel Insurance

The US plays a pivotal role in the tourism industry. Apart from being the country which generates the most revenue from travel and tourism, it is also one of the countries with the most outward tourists each year. Despite this, the number of travelers investing in travel insurance remains low. Although there are many companies offering insurance packages at lucrative rates, such as Sun Life Financial, Inc. (NYSE: SLF ), most tourists simply do not feel the need to obtain such services. According to a survey among US consumers by PR Newswire , 64% of people rarely or never invest in travel insurance.

However, a rise in adventure travel could create the perfect opportunity for companies such as Sun Life Financial, Inc. (NYSE: SLF). PR Newswire states that 68% of consumers are more likely to obtain travel insurance when going to a different country, whereas 58% are likely to obtain travel insurance when going to an area during a bad weather season.

If you’re looking to venture out into the unknown in 2024, you may also consider obtaining travel insurance such as the packages offered by Sun Life Financial, Inc. (NYSE: SLF). For now, allow your mind to fill with wanderlust as we look at the best places for adventure travel in the world.

20 Best Places for Adventure Travel in the World

Methodology

To develop our list of best places for adventure travel in the world , we began by combing the internet for research in this area. We accumulated more than 10 different sources, including credible new outlets such as CN Traveler, Forbes, and National Geographic to come up with a preliminary list of the best places for adventure travel . Using a consensus approach, we shortlisted the places which had been recommended most frequently.

To rank our list of best places for adventure travel in the world , we used 2 metrics. The first was the number of times each place had been recommended in our preliminary search. As expected, this introduced many ties. The second metric we introduced was a ranking factor. The ranking factor calculated the average position of a place in an existing list relative to the size of the list. For example, a place recommended at number 7 on an ascending list of 20 best adventure travel destinations would be given a value of 0.35. An average of all such values for a place were used as the ranking factor. By accumulating the ranking factors and frequency, we developed a scorecard. The list was then sorted in a descending order and the top 20 destinations were chosen as the best places for adventure travel in the world .

By the way, Insider Monkey is an investing website that tracks the movements of corporate insiders and hedge funds. By using a similar consensus approach, we identify the best stock picks of more than 900 hedge funds investing in US stocks. The top 10 consensus stock picks of hedge funds outperformed the S&P 500 Index by more than 140 percentage points over the last 10 years ( see the details here ). Whether you are a beginner investor or a professional one looking for the best stocks to buy, you can benefit from the wisdom of hedge funds and corporate insiders.

Here are 20 Best Places for Adventure Travel in the World.

20. Dahshur Complex, Egypt

Recommended Activity: Traverse The Bent Pyramid of Egypt

Insider Monkey Score: 2.17

While most tourists in Egypt flock to the Pyramids of Giza or the Sphinx, only the most intrepid travelers dare to visit the Bent Pyramid. Located in the Dahshur Necropolis, the Bent Pyramid was one of the first pyramids to be constructed. Midway through the construction, the Pyramid’s slope had to be realigned, therefore giving it its distinct shape. This architectural marvel is notorious for being one of the most difficult pyramids to explore. Its dark passages tend to tighten, narrow, and descend with such savagery that tourists have to crouch and wriggle their way into the chambers, only to find themselves greeted to an army of bats. Needless to say, this attraction is not for the lighthearted, however, it is one of the best places for adventure travel in the world .

19. Svalbard, Norway

Recommended Activity: Take a Fat Bike Tour

Insider Monkey Score: 2.33

Located in the north of Norway, just 400 miles from the north pole, is the archipelago of Svalbard. The region consists of 9 islands and is home to incredible wildlife which includes polar bears, walruses, foxes, and reindeer. For wildlife enthusiasts, Svalbard is one of the best places for adventure travel in the world . The best way to explore this region is to be a part of one of the many fat bike expeditions that take place in the summers. There is a combination of roads and off-road tracks that lead to some of the most picturesque spots in Norway.

18. Yosemite National Park, USA

Recommended Activity: Hike the Half Dome Trail

Insider Monkey Score: 2.52

Recommended only for the stout hearted, the Half Dome trail at Yosemite National Park is an extremely steep hike worthy of being called the best place for adventure travel in the US . The final ascent features a near vertical rock climb using the support of steel cables, which follows the chance to view a panoramic landscape of the surrounding valley. The Half Dome is one of the most challenging treks in the US, however, it is also an incredibly captivating experience to prove your mettle as an adventure traveler.

17. The Great Wall, China

Recommended Activity: Run the Great Wall Marathon

Insider Monkey Score: 2.68

If you wish to supplement your adventure with a feeling of achievement, why not trundle down to China and conquer the Great Wall. The Great Wall Marathon is an annual 20,000 step race which is due to take place this May. The rugged terrain of the wall makes it one of the most grueling marathons on the planet. However, each jog in this event is complemented by the breathtaking views of the Chinese countryside as well as the beauty of the wall itself. The annual spectacle draws tourists from all over the world and the feat of conquering this ancient wonder makes this one of the best places for adventure travel in the world.

16. Azores Islands, Portugal

Recommended Activity: Canyoning and Rappelling

Insider Monkey Score: 3.13

The Azores archipelago is known for its lush greenery, enchanting lagoons, and volcanoes. Although there are plenty of activities for adventure travelers in this tropical utopia, one of the unique ways of exploring the island of São Miguel is by canyoning. Tourists have a chance to wade through the various streams and gorges of the island or hop across the rocky terrain which adorns its cliffsides. Then, for an infusion of adrenaline, you can rappel yourself down the waterfalls as you descend into the pool below.

15. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Recommended Activity: Peer into the Sierra Negra Caldera

Insider Monkey Score: 3.27

Witness the songs of ice and fire by trekking to the enchanting islands of Ecuador where you will have a chance to hike up active volcanic sites. The Galapagos Islands feature several notable volcanoes including Sierra Negra, a notoriously active volcano which last erupted in 2018. There are several guided tours that allow you to go to the mouth of the volcano and peer into its shield shaped caldera.

14. Alaska, USA

Recommended Activity: Dog Sledding

Insider Monkey Score: 3.36

There isn’t a grander way to explore the ice sheets of Alaska than by holding the reins as a pack of dogs tows you across the ice. Dog sledding is one of the best ways to explore the last frontier, as these incredible beasts are able to help cover ground very swiftly. During these expeditions, you’ll be treated to the sight of Alaska’s most beautiful glaciers and peaks as you skid through the snowy wilderness in sub-zero temperatures. Moreover, on top of the natural landscapes, you’ll get to interact with some of the friendliest huskies and malamutes in the world.

13. Great Bear Rainforests, Canada

Recommended Activity: Bear Watching

Insider Monkey Score: 3.45

The Canadian province of British Columbia offers tourists a chance to immerse within the wilderness of the Great Bear Rainforests. While these remote woods are popular for fishing and kayaking, one of its unique adventures is bear-viewing. The rainforests are home to black bears, grizzly bears, and a small population of spirit bears, which is a species of black bears that is born with a recessive gene, causing them to have pale fur. During the summers, bears are known to journey towards the streams and rivers in search of fish, making this a great time for tourists to trek through these woods.

12. Borneo, Malaysia

Recommended Activity: Explore the Borneo Rainforests and Cave System

Insider Monkey Score: 3.71

If you’re not afraid to break a sweat, try taking in the rugged landscape of Borneo. This island is collectively shared by Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia, and is home to exquisite natural beauty and wildlife. While the island has incredible beaches and diving spots, we recommend hiking through the Borneo rain forest where you can interact with several endemic animals such as native orangutans, deer, and elephants. Moreover, beneath the rain forests, the island also has a labyrinth of caves waiting to be explored.

11. Iguazú Falls, Argentina

Recommended Activity: Rafting/ Speedboating

Insider Monkey Score: 3.79

The Iguazú Falls of South America are a tropical heaven nestled between the borders of Argentina and Brazil. These falls are a system of nearly 200 cascading waterfalls, collectively taller than the Niagara Falls and wider than the Victoria Falls. While there are many ways to view the area, the best vantage point is by a raft or speedboat in the Iguazu River that allows you to sail directly below the gushing waters. The base of the waterfalls provides a majestic view along with a chance to take the grandest shower of your life.

10. Patagonia, Chile

Recommended Activity: Take a Cruise to the Chilean Fjords

Insider Monkey Score: 4.22

Patagonia is a vast region shared by the countries of Argentina and Chile and is revered for its diverse landscapes. The region features grasslands, rivers, forests, glaciers, and snowy mountains. Among any other activities in the region, the most adventurous would be a cruise that allows you to voyage to the most remote regions of the Chilean fjords. You can also take part in land-based excursions such as hiking to one of the area’s glaciers or visiting a wildlife park.

9. Petra, Jordan

Recommended Activity: The Jordan Bike Trail

Insider Monkey Score: 4.41

The Rose City of Petra is a UNESCO heritage site and one of the most archeologically significant places on the planet. There are several trails that can be taken to visit this area; however, esthetes may consider the Jordan Bike Trail which allows you to cycle through the desert. Once you reach the famous city of Petra, you can explore the tombs, monasteries, and various ruins located in the area. Visiting Petra is just one of the itineraries on this trail, albeit the most noteworthy, as you will also get to travel through the Wadi Rum before ending up at the shores of the Red Sea.

8. Finnish Lapland, Finland

Recommended Activity: Ice Climbing in the Korouoma canyon

Insider Monkey Score: 4.67

Finland’s northern most region, the Lapland, is a sparsely populated area and a gateway into the Arctic Circle. Among many natural wonders in the area is the Korouoma canyon, which hosts icy waterfalls against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains. In the winter, tourists can climb up these frozen waterfalls in an experience akin to climbing the walls of Castle Black. Apart from ice climbing, tourists in the Finnish Lapland can also view the Aurora Borealis, or the northern lights, in the winter season.

7. Ningaloo Reef, Australia

Recommended Activity: Take a Swim Tour

Insider Monkey Score: 4.73

Australia has the luxury of being surrounded by some of the most exquisite corals in the world, each of which is worthy of being called the best place for adventure travel in the world . Among them is the aquatic paradise otherwise known as the Ningaloo Reef. Here, you have a chance to swim alongside the most magical marine creatures on the planet. Sea turtles, dolphins and dugongs are a favorite among tourists, however, each year approximately 30,000 humpback whales gather in this region during the summer and fall months. Swimming in the Ningaloo Reef is considered quite safe, and the area is a popular diving spot for wildlife enthusiasts.

6. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Recommended Activity: Bungee Jumping and Visiting the Devil’s Pool

Insider Monkey Score: 5.43

Located on the Zambezi River at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls is one of the greatest sights on the planet. Considered to be one of the largest waterfalls in the world, it offers a majestic landscape that can be explored on rafts or a helicopter tour. For true adventurists, however, bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls bridge is one of the most exhilarating experiences in the world. Further, during the dry season tourists can also dive into the Devil’s Pool, a natural infinity pool, which allows you to swim to the very edge of the waterfall, mere inches from being swashed off a cliff.

50-year Wall Street Insider Names #1 stock for AI “Tidal Wave”

Published on april 1, 2024 at by insider monkey staff.

Should I put my money in Artificial Intelligence?

Here to answer that for us… and give away his No. 1 free AI recommendation… is 50-year Wall Street titan, Marc Chaikin.

Marc’s been a trader, stockbroker, and analyst. He was the head of the options department at a major brokerage firm and is a sought-after expert for CNBC, Fox Business, Barron’s, and Yahoo! Finance…

But what Marc’s most known for is his award-winning stock-rating system. Which determines whether a stock could shoot sky-high in the next three to six months… or come crashing down.

That’s why Marc’s work appears in every Bloomberg and Reuters terminal on the planet…

And is still used by hundreds of banks, hedge funds, and brokerages to track the billions of dollars flowing in and out of stocks each day.

He’s used this system to survive nine bear markets… create three new indices for the Nasdaq… and even predict the brutal bear market of 2022, 90 days in advance.

So you can see why CNBC’s Jim Cramer has said he’s learned to never bet against Marc.

Which Austrian Alpine region is right for you?

With epic scenery and fresh mountain air guaranteed, Austria’s Alps offer travellers an inviting mix of culture, relaxation and adventure. Find out which area would suit you this summer.

A person on a mountain lookout platform.

One of Europe’s top skiing destinations in winter, the Austrian Alps are sometimes overlooked as a place to visit in summer. But once the snow seekers go into hibernation and the ski schools shut up shop, the mountains, meadows and valleys here take on a different look — and other activities take centre stage. You’ll find hiking, climbing and biking routes across the Alps, as well as beautiful lakes to swim in. Travellers chasing an action-packed break can try cycling in Kitzbühel or paragliding in St Anton, while those in search of peace and quiet could venture to the nature park in Zillertal. For culture and food, visit the bustling city of Innsbruck or head to Paznaun-Ischgl. Here, discover the right Austrian Alpine region for you.

Colourful traditional Austrian buildings with a mountain backdrop.

Best for: a city break This mid-Alpine urban centre in the west of the country is the gateway to the Tyrolean mountains. For many, it offers the best of both worlds, with an attractive old town, interesting sights — such as the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) — and the Nordkette Cable Car that cruises up to the surrounding peaks. Summer brings a fun programme of events, including a series of open-air concerts held in the courtyard of the Kaiserliche Hofburg (Imperial Palace). Learn about local history and culture while paddling on the River Inn on a city rafting tour with Stubai Rafting or try Up Stream Surfing , a fun combination of river surfing and wakeboarding.

Best for: mountain biking A place that holds many accolades for its skiing facilities, glitzy Kitzbühel also flexes its muscles in summertime. Take biking, for example — the area has hosted a cycling marathon, Der Kitzbüheler Radmarathon , since 2021 and boasts one of the most challenging road ascents in Austria: the Kitzbüheler Horn. Mountain bikers will love the recently opened Sonnenrast trail or the single-track Hahnenkamm route, which runs all the way back to the town.

Paznaun-Ischgl

Best for: Alpine cuisine Cool air and rocky peaks see cyclists flock to the 25-mile-long Paznaun Valley in summer for events such as the E-Bike World Championship , but there's another draw here, too. Alongside Ischgl’s high-end restaurants are a number of rustic mountain huts, which from July to October offer seasonal dishes developed by local chefs. Traditional cooking is combined with gourmet flair, with last year’s highlights including Alpine beef with wild herbs, and nettle ravioli with barley, cheese and chicory. Also, be sure to taste the region's signature cheese, Paznauner almkäse (mountain cheese), which gets its distinct taste from alpine herbs.

Schladming-Dachstein

Best for: views With more than 300 lakes and 100 waterfalls, the Schladming-Dachstein region is one of the most water-rich in Austria — take a short hike to Spiegelsee on the Reiteralm to see the mountains mirrored on the glass-clear water of the lake. The region's standout feature, however, is the majestic Dachstein Mountain . The mountain station at 2,700m above sea level is easily reachable by cable car and offers views as far as the Czech Republic and Slovenia. A suspension bridge, a viewing platform and the snappily titled ‘Stairway to Nothingness’ await visitors here, while a shiny new cable car station is scheduled to open in May 2024.

People doing yoga on a grassy hill with mountains in the background.

St Anton am Arlberg

Best for: outdoor activities Known as the birthplace of Alpine skiing, St Anton am Arlberg has a fascinating history that’s shared with visitors year-round at the local Museum of St Anton am Arlberg . In warmer months, the town provides the perfect base from which to try a whole host of outdoor activities. Adrenaline-seekers can try paragliding or canyoning, while those seeking relaxation can unwind at the Mountain Yoga Festival St Anton — and those wanting a bit of everything can make for the action-packed Mountain Sports Festival . Whatever you go for, St Anton am Arlberg is easy to reach by train thanks to regular high-speed connections from Vienna and Zurich.

St Johann in Tirol

Best for: local charm St Johann in Tirol sits at the foot of the impressive Wilder Kaiser Mountains, alongside the charming villages of Oberndorf, Kirchdorf and Erpfendorf. There are ample activities on offer in the region, including hiking, road cycling and mountain biking, golf and swimming. For a true taste of the area, check out the many local farm shops and cafes to pick up outstanding fresh produce or visit the traditional St Johann Weekly Market to sample regional specialities such as brodakrapfen (a pasty-like snack filled with potato and cheese).

People paddleboarding on a lake.

Zell am See-Kaprun

Best for: swimming and watersports On a calm day, the mountains around Lake Zell are reflected in the clear water below. Refreshing water temperatures and lakeside lidos make this Salzburgerland spot popular for swimming, as well as stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing. Not far away is the modern Tauern Spa , with 12 pools and a selection of wellness areas including 10 saunas and steam rooms — try the rock crystal sauna with different infusions such as mint and citrus or lemongrass and eucalyptus, and be sure to set aside ample time to take in the surrounding scenery.

Best for: nature The wide Zillertal valley is located to the east of Innsbruck. There are plenty of areas dedicated to outdoor sports here, including an extended ski season and year-round activities on the Hintertux Glacier , but also parts that remain almost untouched. The High Mountain Nature Park Zillertal Alps covers a 160sq-mile area and is home to thousands of animal species, including 500 kinds of butterfly, and more than 1,000 plant varieties. From May to October, themed hiking tours led by the experienced park guides — such as the ‘herb walk’ or wildlife watching — provide fascinating insights into the local flora and fauna.

I Just Rewatched Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure For The First Time In Years, And It Led To Me Falling Down A Time Travel Rabbit Hole

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is still excellent, but I am still trying to figure out how the time travel makes any sense.

Bill and Ted at the Circle K

I still remember going to a movie theater with my friends when I was 11 years old and seeing one of the best '80s movies , Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure , for the first time. I didn’t even want to see it, thinking I was too smart for the comedy about a couple of dumb guys. However, I was talked into it and ended up loving the movie. I few years later, I would reunite with the same friends to see Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey , and they were very much in my thoughts when I fell in love with Bill and Ted Face the Music so many years later.

Yet while I love the whole trilogy, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is still the best movie in the franchise , though it had been quite some time since I had actually seen it. I watched it so often as a kid I still know it by heart, but in sitting down to go through it again for a piece I was writing, I found myself being sucked in by the absolutely ridiculous time travel mechanics of the story and asking questions I'd never asked before. In many ways, the time travel is brilliant, and I know the movie is a comedy that isn’t meant to be taken too seriously. At the same time, I have some serious questions about how it all works that I can’t get out of my head.

Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves smiling together in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Bill And Ted’s Timeline Is A Recursive Loop, But It Had To Start Somewhere

The premise of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, for all its time travel nonsense, is simple. Bill and Ted are destined to change the world, and so the future that depends on them sends George Carlin’s Rufus, the true hero of the movie , back in time to ensure the duo is not broken up due to a failing history grade, which sends Keanu Reees’ Ted off to military school, destroying their band before it has a chance to make the world a better place.

But then, how does that work exactly? The future where Bill and Ted have united the world already exists, which indicates the pair did not split up, but if time travel intervention is necessary to prevent the split, how did the future that works to prevent it come about in the first place? It’s a paradox of predestination, and it just doesn’t work.

Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey tells us that changing the past is at least theoretically possible. That’s what Joss Ackland's villain attempts to do, trying to kill Bill and Ted before they form their band, but there’s no indication in Excellent Adventure that anything has gone wrong in the past that requires Rufus’ intervention to fix. The implication is that Bill and Ted will naturally fail their history report if time travel doesn’t help them, which would mean that the future that helps them never comes to pass, right? Why is my nose bleeding?

Bill and Ted in the booth

How Does The “Clock In San Dimas” Keep Moving Forward If They Can Go Back In Time In The Future To Change The Present/Past

One of the key plot items in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is a ticking clock. It's a frequently used drama element, but it doesn't work here. Rufus explains to them that even though they have a time machine, it is still possible for them to miss their history report if they are not back in time to give it because their timeline continues marching forward while they are in the past. Ted is supposed to wind his watch, which he forgets to do, and the pair nearly miss the report. This makes zero sense.

Bill and Ted can travel into their own past, as they do, accidentally traveling to the night before their report where they meet themselves. While we never see it, we know they travel into their past again after their report is done to set up the Rube Goldberg series of events that allow them to break the historical figures out of jail. If they can go back in time and deliver a set of keys, why can’t they go back in time to give their history report?

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

Interacting with themselves in the past doesn’t cause any sort of paradox, as it does in other time travel stories. Even if there is a constantly-changing present moment for Bill and Ted that they are missing by not being around, they can just travel into the “past” by arriving there as they already do in the film. What was to stop them from, instead of time jumping to the next day, simply taking the historical figures home from the Circle K in their "past" and simply waiting for the next day? At least if they had done that it would explain how they had time to create a multi-person choreographed stage show with music and lights.

What’s the difference between going into the past to drop a set of keys and set up a tape recorder, and going to the past to give a history report? As long as the pair do go back and give the report, it shouldn’t matter when, from their perspective, they do it.

George Carlin as Rufus

How Does Ted Know Rufus’ Name?

In the grand scheme of things, this last issue is a minor one, but it’s a smaller version of the same infinite loop problem that plagues the rest of the movie. George Carlin’s Rufus never introduces himself, and yet, Bill and Ted learn his name, when it is given to them… by Bill and Ted.

It’s called the bootstrap paradox, and it’s a problem because the information, Rufus’ name, has no clear origin. How did “future” Bill and Ted learn Rufus’ name? They got it from the future when they were “present” Bill and Ted, and the information continues to be passed forever in the loop, but it still doesn’t explain where it came from.

The ultimate answer to these questions is obviously “Who cares? It’s a funny movie.” If anything, the fact that the time travel doesn't work is a feature, not a bug. It's part of the comedy. Nobody other than me is being kept up at night trying to figure out how the time travel in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is supposed to work . Still, now that I’ve had these thoughts, I’m probably going to have them every time I watch the movie from now on.
