Journey Planning

man with smartphone photo

Whether you’re new to travelling by bus, or a seasoned traveller making an unfamiliar journey, there are a number of resources available so you can plan your journey in advance and travel in confidence.

TfWM Journey Planner

The Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) website has a very handy journey planning tool that will allow you to plan your journey in advance and give exact details on the journey you will need to take. You can specify various other public transport methods apart from the bus, and you can be provided with step-by-step walking instructions for travelling between interchange stops

Click here to plan your journey!

Google Maps

You can also plan public transport journeys using Google Maps (website and app). Right-click on the map to select your ‘from’ and ‘to’ points, and then click the Transit icon (that looks like a train)

Go to Google Maps website

The Traveline Midlands website offers a journey planning service that will even plan your journey beyond the West Midlands!

Mobile Apps

For journey planning on the move, use the TfWM app, see the Apps page for more information and links.

Other mobile apps I have used that are very useful and I can personally recommend are ‘Citymapper’ and ‘Moovit’, search for them in the Apple or Google Play stores.

Moscow Throws Putin Fanboy Scott Ritter Under the Bus

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Former U.N. weapons inspector turned sex offender Scott Ritter has made a name for himself parroting Kremlin propaganda about the war against Ukraine.

But if he was hoping Moscow would back him up after he says he was barred from traveling to Russia because Washington is “afraid” of him appearing at a St. Petersburg economic forum, he was apparently sadly mistaken.

While Ritter and his supporters—including Russian media—have played up the notion that his passport was seized because he has the U.S. administration shaking in their boots, the Kremlin did not share in this hysteria.

Asked about the scandal Tuesday, Vladimir Putin ’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov played down Ritter’s claims. He told reporters the “details” about the situation were not clear and that there was nothing unusual about a former intelligence officer facing certain travel restrictions.

“This is practiced in almost all countries in relation to former intelligence officers,” he said.

He added, however, that if Ritter truly was thrown off the flight to stop him speaking in Russia then it was part of a “frenzied campaign to prevent U.S. citizens from establishing at least some contacts with Russia.”

Ritter famously visited Chechnya in January and delivered a pep talk in broken Russian to thousands of troops who’ve been waging war in Ukraine, so he’s already had plenty of “contacts” apparently even with Russian leaders sanctioned by the West.

This is surely one of the most surreal moments of the war yet Scott Ritter has turned up in Chechnya and spoken in broken Russian (some of which I couldn’t make out) to thousands of Kadyrov’s fighters about his efforts to strengthen the "friendship between Chechnya and America" pic.twitter.com/vGiEs90ktW — Francis Scarr (@francis_scarr) January 6, 2024

The State Department has declined to comment on the “status” of Ritter’s passport. Ritter, who was convicted in an underage online sex sting in 2011, told Kremlin-controlled media on Monday that he was pulled off a flight on his way to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where he was slated to speak.

“They took my passport. When asked why, they said ‘orders of the State Department,’” he told RT, later claiming that the real “purpose” of the move was to deprive Russia of his presence.

“They stuck it to the Russians,” he claimed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday that there’s nothing Moscow can do to help Ritter.

“He’s not a Russian citizen,” he said.

All the changes to Birmingham city centre National Express bus services as routes divered for tram works

There will be some 'unavoidable changes' to bus stop locations in Birmingham while tram works are carried out in April

A number of bus services in Birmingham city centre will be diverted from their usual routes in April due to tram works being carried out.

From Sunday, April 7, certain bus routes that currently serve the city centre - that you can see below - will be diverted to different stops in the city centre. This will be to allow the Midland Metro Alliance to continue work on the Eastside Metro Extension that will see an extend track laid in nearby Lower Bull Street, through Albert Street.

If you usually get on or off your bus by New Street Station, Moor Street Station, or Priory Queensway, in Birmingham city centre, your bus route is still operating, but the stop you need to use to get off or on the bus may change.

From Sunday April 7, nearby Albert Street will also be closed to vehicular traffic during the works and the taxi ranks in the area will temporarily relocate to Corporation Street, opposite the Square Peg.

Which bus services will be affected?

See below a list of affected routes/stops affected:

2, 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 16, 16A, 23, 24, 33, 45, 47, 51, 61, 63, 65, 66, 67, 68, 82, 87, 97, 822, 907, 907A, 934, 935, 936, 937, 937A, 997, 997S, X21, X22, X51, X64 & FD.

How will i know which bus stop to use.

From April 7, passengers who usually get off at bus stops in the city centre by New Street Station, Moor Street Station, or Priory Queensway will need to check their journeys in advance online on the TfWM journey planner, here , to see which bus stop they can get on or off at.

This next phase of the Metro extension will also see a temporary tram stop installed outside of the Clayton Hotel, allowing passengers to use this section of the route as early as 2025/26.

The changes will be in place from April 7, 2024 when track works will get underway in Moor Street Queensway. Transport for West Midlands ( TfWM ) say these works are expected to last until approximately Autumn 2024.

What has National Express and others said about the changes?

A National Express West Midlands spokesperson said: “From Sunday 7 April 2024, there will be changes to bus services and bus stop locations around Birmingham city centre during Metro extension works on Moor Street Queensway.

“All National Express West Midlands bus services will continue to run during the works and customers are advised to check our website  nxbus.co.uk  for full details of changes to bus services and bus stops ahead of April 7.”

Anne Shaw, Executive Director of TfWM, said: “The expansion of the Metro to the east of the city is an exciting scheme which will help transform and support the regeneration of Digbeth by improving connectivity and making the most out of HS2. While there will inevitably be some disruption as work starts on Moor Street Queensway later this spring we are working with the council and bus operators to ensure that this is kept to minimum.

Maria Ion, Project Director, said: “There will be some unavoidable changes to bus stop locations, however, we will be working hard to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum during the works. Moor Street Queensway will remain open, with one lane of traffic in each direction, at all times, to help keep the network moving.”

Sir Keir Starmer has said "wealth creation" is his top priority in an election pitch to the middle class and middle ground.

The Labour leader also unveiled the party's plan to get more people into work, insisting "those who can work, will work".

The "back to work plan" several proposed employment support and welfare benefits reforms aimed at increasing the employment rate from 75% to 80%.

It comes after Rishi Sunak pledged to give £20m each to 30 towns across the country , with the Conservatives saying local people in each area would decide how the money would be spent.

Election latest: Tories could be reduced to 66 seats, poll suggests

In a statement Sir Keir said: "The first step of my Labour government will be to create economic stability, which means getting a grip of the spiralling welfare bill that's gone out of control under the Tories.

"We will set about, within days of a future government, reforming work support to get more people into work."

He also told The Times his "number one mission is wealth creation".

"I think you win from the centre ground, the centre ground is where most people are," he told the paper.

"As a nation, broadly speaking we're a pretty reasonable, tolerant bunch but we are in the centre ground of politics. People don't like the extremes of the right or the left.

"They are reasonably tolerant. They want themselves, their families and the country to improve and make progress."

Tories pledge £20m each for 30 towns

Meanwhile, the Tories have said they would add 30 towns - many of which are based in the Midlands and the North - to their long-term plan for towns, increasing the number that will receive financial support to more than 100.

The prime minister said the "bold action" would "transform" the towns, as he claimed Labour's record in government "shows they don't care about towns - neglecting their needs, allowing them to decline and focusing instead on cities".

"Sir Keir Starmer has no plan to unlock opportunities in towns and would take us back to square one," he said.

"Building on our strong track record of levelling up in Teesside and the Midlands, we will go further across the country to build a secure future for our children and grandchildren."

Andrew Griffith, the science minister, clarified that each of the 30 towns will be handed £20m, rather than this being the total investment.

Asked by Sky News how far the cash will really go, he said: "It's £20m for each of those towns. The cost of this policy is £600m, it phases in over the next 10 years or so."

Mr Sunak will take his campaign to the North East today, heading to the so-called red wall after his campaign has so far focused on retaining the Tory vote.

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow's crazy traffic and its excellent metro network mean that the city's buses and trolleybuses aren't the number one option for tourists .

Moscow has hundreds of bus and trolleybus routes , many of which connect the city centre with its otherwise-isolated suburban neighbourhoods. Regular traffic jams mean that the bus network has not always been the most recommendable option , especially as the metro is so efficient.

Having said that, new bus lanes have opened up recently making it a comfortable alternative for certain routes. The bus can be a good, economical option at night , when 13 routes replace the metro after it shuts down (all starting from Kitay-Gorod metro and taking the main roads out to the edge off the city).

More modern buses have screens indicating the stops along the route, but in older ones you may well struggle knowing where to get off if relying on the Russian-language loudspeaker announcements .

If you do decide to catch the bus, tickets can be purchased from kiosks and metro stops, and the majority of lines operate between 6 am and 1 am.
