Fantastic tour from Ulaanbattar to Khuvsgol National Park via Amarbayasgalant Monastery. Amazing scenery and very interesting detail. Superb team of guide & driver, who both excelled in their respective roles and went above and beyond, staying with us when our flight back was delayed by several hours and teaching us Mongolian & Russian card games in the evenings (still a bit miffed they beat us at the British games that we taught them though! ;). Food & accommodation was excellent with different dietary requirements all met with no problems and very comfortable ger camps.
Thank you for introducing us to Mongolia and getting us in at the very end of the season! Our tour itinerary was nicely customized for us and Togosoo and Nandai were very capable. I loved the different Ger camps (even though it was freezing cold overnight! The wood stoves are wonderful), and it was rather nice for everything to be so empty of other tourists.
Meet in UB and fly to the capital of the Khuvsgul province, Murun. The flight takes one and a half hours, and on arrival at the airstrip in the Murun a local driver, who will take you to Khuvsgul lake National Park , will meet you.

The days you have the opportunity to trek and ride to the lakeside & mountain for exploring, taking pictures, enjoy wildlife, flora & fauna of the Khuvsgul lake area.
Overnight in tourist camp. (B +L+D)
Up early you will be driven back to Murun for your return flight to Ulaanbaatar . (B)
- The best time to make this trip May to September is the best season, with the peak season in July for the Naadam Festival. July and August are also the wettest months of the year but be assured, our climate is such that you will still have many sunny days at this time. The best time to visit the Gobi is June or September.
- Accommodation: We believe that comfortable, welcoming accommodation is vital to the enjoyment of your trip. You will be staying in a standard 3-4 star hotel in Ulaanbaatar and a tourist ger camp (traditional dwelling) with currency (220V), shower and other useful services (2 to 4 people per ger) in the countryside. All accommodation offered by Discover Mongolia is personally checked by our staff to ensure high standards.
- Meals: In Ulaanbaatar, you will be dining at fine European and Asian cuisine restaurants. Mutton, beef, rice, and noodles form the basis of the Mongolian diet, so your meals will be based around this. However, the trail rations may include vegetables, eggs, peanut butter, cheese and sometimes yak! On some days there will be lunchboxes from tourist camps. It is good food and our experience has been that guests are happy with this arrangement. Please let us know in advance if you are a vegetarian. Alcohol is not provided on the trip but tourists are free to bring their own.
- Transport: Discover Mongolia use the highest level, latest model, air-conditioned private vans or 4WD vehicles for the maximum comfort on your touring days. A day's drive in the countryside will be approx 200-250km.
- Personal things to bring with you: Warm thin layers of clothing are the best such as bring a waterproof jacket, and a hat and headscarf to protect you from the sun and winds. Don't forget insect repellent, sun cream, lip-gloss, water purifying tablets and first aid kit (medicine for headache, cold, diarrhea, runny nose; bandages; any medicine prescribed for you ). All your camera equipment.

What do Mongolians Eat? 8 Lesser Known Mongolian Dishes to Try
Table of contents.
Khuvsgul Lake, located in the northern part of Mongolia, is an incredible natural wonder and a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.
Not only is Khuvsgul Lake the largest lake in Mongolia, it’s the largest freshwater lake in Central Asia. The lake is famous for its crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills that provide stunning views of its pristine beauty.
With temperatures ranging from warm summers to cold winters where the lake completely freezes over, Khuvsgul Lake offers visitors a unique experience no matter what time of year they visit.
From fishing on its tranquil waters to exploring nearby villages or trekking through its mountainous terrain, Khuvsgul Lake has something for everyone and is one of the best places to visit in Mongolia . Especially if you only have seven days to experience what Mongolia is all about.
Northern Mongolia is also home to Mongolia’s shamans, where these ancient traditions are still practiced, as well as Mongolia’s famous reindeer herders. With the right planning, and a little bit of luck, you can experience these unique customs during this 7-day itinerary.
If you’re interested in traveling without a guide, at your own pace, and on your own budget, this northern Mongolia itinerary is a great start for planning a 7-day Mongolia itinerary .
How to get from Ulaanbaatar to Khuvsgul Lake
To get from Ulaanbaatar to Khuvsgul Lake, there are multiple ways to make the journey: by car, bus, or plane.
The trip to Khuvsgul Lake from Ulaanbaatar will take two days minimum, with one overnight in Moron.
Those who make this trip by car should be warned, the journey to Moron can take more than 10 hours due to road conditions, weather, and just plain old Mongolian time. That being said, the road passes through an array of stunning landscapes and captivating landmarks making the journey a memorable part of the trip.
From Moron, the drive to Khuvsgul Lake, no matter which mode of transport you choose – car, bus, or plane – will take several more hours depending on your final destination.
One advantage, and case for making this drive, is the opportunity you have to meet nomadic people living in nearby villages or explore the towns, cafes, restaurants, and local markets along the way.
Mongolia is a vibrant destination worth visiting not just for its natural wonders, but also for its rich cultural heritage which has been passed down through centuries of nomadic life in this part of Mongolia.
The one-hour flight from Ulaanbaatar to Moron Airport provides travelers with incredible views from above of the grasslands and meadows filled with wildflowers leading up to Moron’s mountainous terrain.
While flights are available, and are the fastest, but also most expensive option for getting from Ulaanbaatar to northern Mongolia, we don’t recommend traveling to Moron this way. In 2022, domestic flight options were limited and unreliable. This is something that changes yearly as Mongolia’s domestic airlines work through local issues but is something to be aware of.
Taking the bus from Ulaanbaatar to Moron is the cheapest option, but also the longest. The bus from Ulaanbaatar to Moron operates throughout the year. From Moron you will need to hire a private transport or hitch a ride.
Whichever mode of transport you decide on for getting from Ulaanbaatar to Khuvsgul Lake, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views as you travel through this spectacular part of Mongolia.
When to Visit Khuvsgul Lake
From five-star hotels to tourist ger camps or camping, there are plenty of options when it comes to booking a stay at Khuvgul Lake. However, it’s important to keep in mind that July will be the busiest month with the highest room rates due to the national holiday Naadam . We recommend visiting Khuvsgul Lake in June or August (the best month, in our opinion) instead. The lake is at its warmest the last week of August.
Khuvsgul Lake 7-Day Itinerary
Khuvsgul lake 7-day itinerary, day 1: drive ulaanbaatar to moron.
Also written as Murun, Moron is the capital of Khuvsgul Aimag (province) in northern Mongolia and is home to just under 50,000 Mongolians. From Moron, you can travel to Khuvsgul Lake and see the beauty of the national park and the best of northern Mongolia. You can also travel to the towns of Ulaan Uul and Tsagaan Nuur while you’re in this part of northern Mongolia, where you will meet the reindeer herders of Mongolia.
The best things to do in Moron include visiting the historical buildings located here, including the ancient Moron Monastery which dates back to 586 AD.
Other attractions in Moron include the Ikh Tenger Natural History Museum which features an impressive collection of artifacts from around the region as well as stunning displays of local flora and fauna. In addition, visitors can explore colorful markets featuring traditional products such as handmade carpets or textiles from nearby villages.
Filled with rustic charm and plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery, Moron is a must-visit spot when traveling through Khuvsgul province in northern Mongolia.
Thing to See in Moron:

- Danzandarjaa Khiid
- Khövsgöl Aimag Museum
Depending on what your plans are for traveling in northern Mongolia, you may need to stop into the border patrol office in Moron to obtain a permit for your adventure.
Day 2: Drive Moron to Khuvsgul Lake
There’s no denying that Khuvsgul Lake is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders of the world.
Located in the northern part of Mongolia, Khuvsgul Lake is part of a large area encompassing over 11,000 square kilometers and is surrounded by Khuvsgul Lake National Park.
From Moron, head towards the town of Hatgal, which is the southernmost point of the lake on the Moron-Hatgal Highway. As one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, Khuvsgul Lake provides visitors with stunning views and an unparalleled wilderness experience.
The lake boasts incredible wildlife – from bears, wolves, musk deer to moose and wolverines.
This renowned eco-tourism destination has a variety of activities available for visitors including boat tours, fishing expeditions, trekking and horseback riding. Diving is also available at Khuvsgul Lake and there’s even a dinosaur sculpture park located beneath the lake’s surface.
Apart from exploring Khuvsgul Lake National Park’s wildlife and forests, travelers can also marvel at its secluded beaches and rocky shorelines. Hiking up the surrounding mountains offers amazing views of the lake and will also give you a perspective of its sheer size and volume.
For those looking for adventure, Khuvsgul Lake has numerous rapids and rivers for kayaking or rafting trips. In addition to outdoor activities like camping or sightseeing around the lake’s periphery, visitors can take part in shamanic ceremonies which have been practiced for centuries by nomadic tribes living in this region.
Day 3: Khuvsgul Lake – Visit the Reindeer Herders
While the majority of Mongolia’s Tsaatan Tribe, the tribe that herds and rides reindeer, live deep in the taiga, in the summer months some families will move their herds closer to Khuvsgul Lake. This gives tourists the chance to meet members of the tribe and their reindeer – something that’s great if you’re on a short itinerary. Normally, a journey to the tribe requires at least three days of arduous travel, which can be very challenging for people.
With the reindeer herders moving closer to the lake, this gives them the chance to meet more tourists where they can sell their crafts, teach them about their herding culture, and introduce people to their unique way of life. Today is a great day for meeting the reindeer riders, especially after several long days of travel.
If you are interested in spending more time with the Tsaatan Tribe and making the trek deep into the taiga to immerse yourself with them, we recommend the tours below.
Day 4: Khuvsgul Lake – Horse Trek
On day four of your Mongolia trip, you’ll want to hire a local nomadic herder as your guide and take a horse trek around the lake.
Horses are an essential part of Mongolian culture, and these are one of those travel opportunities that shouldn’t be missed. The views from the trek and the chance to bond with this magnificent creature will help you better understand Mongols and the way they live.
For centuries, horses have been an integral part of the nation’s nomadic lifestyle, providing transportation for travel, trade, and warfare. Today, the horse is still a symbol of Mongolian pride and heritage – from the traditional sports that are practiced to the unique breeds used in herding livestock across its vast grasslands. Horsemanship remains deeply rooted in Mongolia’s culture as well as its economy, many local families rely on their equestrian skills to make a living – which you’ll be supporting!
Day 5: Khuvsgul Lake – Lake Day
Make the most of your last day at Khuvsgul Lake by going fishing, hiring a boat to take you by the old ship Sukhbaatar, laying on the beach, and going for a dive.
Some of the best things to do on Khuvsgul Lake include:
- Kayak with glass-bottom single and double kayaks
- Dive with Great Sea Resort, Mongolia’s first dive center
- Take a boat to see the old ship Sukhbaatar
- Get a permit and go fishing, the lake is full of lake is full of lenok, salmon, and sturgeon
Day 6: Goodbye Khuvsgul Lake
With a long trip back to Ulaanbaatar ahead of you, make your way from Khuvsgul Lake back to Moron. Or even beyond to Ikh-Uul or Bulgan, where you’ll be able to find tourist camps and some basic hotel options.
You may be tempted to fit in one more stop in Kharkhorin, the ancient capital city of Mongolia, but be warned – this means a lot of driving. Take our advice as you will.
Day 7: Drive Back to Ulaanbaatar
Try to get an early start on your drive back into Ulaanbaatar. Traffic around rush hour makes getting back into the city a slow-moving exercise in patience.

Ice Lake and Monastery
Introduction.
This winter journey will take us to the magnificent Lake Khuvsgul, the “dark blue pearl” as it is respectfully called by locals. It is the twin lake of nearby Baikal Lake. Khuvsgul Lake freezes over rapidly and displays an amazing crystal clear ice. The lake is situated at an altitude of 1,645 meters above sea level at the foot of the eastern Sayan Mountains, close to the Russian border. It is one of the most ancient lakes in the world, being more than 2 million years old. It is the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, holding almost 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water. The lake and its pristine surroundings are protected in the Lake Khuvsgul National Park, home to a variety of wildlife such as ibex, argali, elk, wolf, musk deer, brown bear, moose, and sable. On the way north we will visit Amarbayasgalant Monastery, one of the largest and most important centers of Buddhism in Mongolia, located in a broad, secluded valley far off the main road. It is one of only few monasteries to have largely survived the purges of the 1930s. The journey will lead us through the city of Erdenet, built within just a few years to support one of the largest copper mines in the world and onwards through beautiful northern Mongolian landscapes with densely forested hills, wide open valleys and across mighty streams.
Trip Details
- Practicalities
Day 1: To Erdenet
Pick up from your hotel, and transfer to the railway station of Ulaanbaatar. We leave Ulaanbaatar in northerly direction for the city of Erdenet on the domestic night train which leaves at 20h35. Erdenet, situated in a valley between the Selenge and Orkhon rivers, is the third-largest city of Mongolia although it was founded as late as 1974. It owes it’s existence to the discovery of large deposits of copper in the 1950s. Just outside of the city operates the fourth largest copper mine in the world.
Day 2: Amarbayasgalant Monastery
At 07h40 in the morning our train will arrive in Erdenet. After breakfast we will depart to Amarbayasgalant Monastery located 110 km to the northeast. The monastery was established and funded by order of Manchu Yongzheng Emperor (and completed under his successor the Qianlong Emperor) to serve as a final resting place for Öndör Gegeen Zanabazar (1635–1723), the first religious leader of Lamaism in Mongolia. It is unique among Mongolian monasteries in that it was erected in a consistent style between 1727 and 1736. After visiting the monastery we will head back to Erdenet. We will stay in a hotel in Erdenet.
Day 3: To Moron
Today we will use the day to drive to Mörön, the small provincial capital of Mongolia’s northernmost province Khuvsgul. We will cross Bulgan province where we will visit the Uran Togoo Mountain, an extinct volcano named for its characteristic crater, well visible in the forested landscape. Hike around the area. On arrival to Mörön we may visit the so-called Black Market, one of the largest of its kind in northern Mongolia and enjoy the bustle of commerce.
Day 4: To Lake Khuvsgul
Full day excursion to Lake Khuvsgul, which is a 1½ hours drive north from Mörön. In the middle of the winter the entire lake freezes over and for most parts of the winter, we can drive out on to the lake, for the dramatic views of its landscapes, with the Horidol Saridag Mountain range straddling the western shore. The ice is about 1.30 meters thick and transparent. We will also visit Hatgal village, which reveals the proximity with Siberian Russia, through its log house architecture. The folks here are Khalkha Mongols, which make up the majority of the many Mongol ethnic groups. The Darhad Mongols are an ethnic group who lives along the western lake shore in winter. If there is time on the return journey to Mörön we will visit the Deer Stones of Uushigiin Övör. This bronze age site contains 15 upright carved deer stones, plus sacrificial altars, scattered over 6 km across a plain along the Delgermörön River.
Day 5: To Ulaanbaatar via Erdenet
Today there is time in the morning hours to visit Mörön and the Black Market in the morning, or drive to the Deer Stones, 25 km west of Mörön (If we did not go there the previous day). There is also the provincial museum, which displays the natural and cultural history of Khuvsgul province. After lunch in the hotel we will drive back to Erdenet to board the overnight train to Ulaanbaatar.
Day 6: Ulaanbaatar
We will be met in the early morning in Ulaanbaatar, and transferred to your hotel, or any other point in the city of your choice.
DATES ex Ulaanbaatar:
Daily in off season.
PRICE 2019 ex Ulaanbaatar:
2 – 8 members : USD 950 per person
Single supplement (3n): USD 120
Practicalities:
This tour is supported by a jeep or minibus depending on the number of travelers. Overnight train to/from Erdenet
Accommodation:
We stay in so-called Deluxe rooms in local hotels for the duration of this trip. Deluxe here merely means that there will be attached facilities in the room.
An English-speaking Mongolian guide will accompany you at all times. Other language guides such as Russian, French, German, Italian, Korean etc. available at additional cost, upon request.
The meals will be provided in the hotels, or as picnic lunches.
Additional:
We can organize hotel accommodation, city tours and transfers in Ulaanbaatar.
Winter Dymanics:
The train will operate on time. However, the drive in Lake Hövsgöl National Park depends on ice conditions on the lake. It is not always possible to drive out on the ice. Therefore adaptions of the itinerary are to be expected. There will be opportunity for walks. It is best to dress in layers, in order to accommodate being still or walking.
English speaking guide, all meals outside Ulaanbaatar. All overnights in double occupancy hotel rooms and night train cabins. All local transport and transfers to/from Ulaanbaatar.
Drinks, and laundry. Nomadic Journeys may add hotel accommodation and transfer in Ulaanbaatar at current rates.
What our guests say
We appreciate your feedback about our tours and services.
Living the mongolian way
Great place to stay and experience mongolian way of living, no tv, wifi, phone. Just nature and great company of the staff and livestocks of mongolia. The toilet is a hole in the ground covered by a shed. It is clean, but can be smelly to those used to city life. Not hot water supply, inform the staff that you like to hot water half an hour earlier so that they can boil it over camel dung 🙂

The most suitable time to travel to the lake is between 10 June and 10 September. The reason is the lake's frozen surface remains till 10 June, and the weather sharply cools after 10 September. The weather is warm and enjoyable between 10 June and 15 August. The weather is crisp mornings and evenings between 15 August and 10 September and warm during the daylight. Snowfall may occur in early June, late August, and September. Average day temperatures are +20°C, highest +25°C at the end of June, at the end of August, and in September. July and the first half of August are the warmest as well as wettest months. July and August average daylight temperature is +25°C, hottest +32°C, and night temperature could drop to +10°C. They worked very well as a team to make sure we are comfortable (including nature calls) . While communications is limited with the drivers .. we managed to express our joy and fun.
The booking and administrative details and follow up needs to be improved.. response is generally slow and communications not so clear. There was a hiccup in the beginning , dinner booking was not made in UB and we had to walk a good one hour before we settled on one available dining place. The next two weeks were rugged .. an unconventional travel that we embarked on in 2 jeeps traversing 3000 km. The country its very vast and have beautiful spots to show off and the culture has long history. It was truly a out of the norm experience to stay at gers ( keep getting our head knocked for the low doors)… using common toilets and showers … limited electricity and water supply hours… we were very happy when we had ensuite toilets or ensuite shower/toilet for some accommodation. The food is better than we had expected and the tour agency provided extra fruits for us at our request.. We love the flaming cliffs ; the terej park; hiking up volcano to name a few… but most of us the journey in the jeep is unforgettable.. the bumpy; rocky; winding rides and the beautiful landscapes as we ride along. Buyna, Derem & Baija became a part of the travel fun too!
of Tulga and his two drivers. Tulga is knowledgeable in various fields and he is a skillful photographer too. His humour kept us entertained at all times. Mongolians are pleasant people. The community is united and helpful. The Ger camps that we stayed are better than our expectation in terms of facilities and food. It was an enjoyable trip except that it rained in the last two days of our trip. We would plan another trip with Nomadic Trails next year. Wonderful photography tour with Nomadic Trails.
