En un mundo de fantasía plagado de duendes, hadas, magia y unicornios, Jack (Tom Cruise) es un místico habitante del bosque. Un día se reúne con Lili (Mia Sara), una princesa de la que está enamorado, y decide llevarla a ver a los unicornios que campan libremente por el bosque. Los unicornios son unas criaturas mágicas y fuertes, que representan la magia buena del mundo. Lo que los dos jóvenes desconocen es que el demoníaco Señor de las Tinieblas (Tim Curry) piensa aprovechar ese momento para acabar con el poder de los unicornios y hacerse con el control del mundo.

El Señor de las Tinieblas secuestra a la princesa, a la que planea usar para su diabólico plan para matar a los unicornios. Jack tendrá que emprender entonces una búsqueda para salvar a la princesa y derrotar al malvado, antes de que éste consiga sus propósitos y convierta el mundo en un lugar congelado y muerto donde no prevalecerá el bien.
