Kerala places to visit in August

Get quick quote.

Kerala is one of the rarest tourist places on earth which you could visit all year round. But chasing monsoon in Kerala in the month of August is a bewitching activity. The land that is blessed with greenery and scenic beauty comes alive during the monsoon. The roaring waterfalls and mist covered hill tops are something that you could cherish forever.  The biggest advantage of the monsoon season in Kerala is that like unlike other parts of the country Kerala doesn't witness incessant rains throughout the season and the rivers are hardly inundated and cause damage to the landscape. You can literally bask in the cool and soft sunlight that seeps in through the wet leaves of trees after a few hours of rainfall. It is also one of the first states in India to receive the monsoon rains.

Southwest Monsoon season, from June to September, is pretty romantic and that is why Kerala is one of the best honeymoon destinations in the world. Well August is also famous for Karkidaka chikitsa (a kind of rejuvenating therapy based on Ayurveda) so you can go back with a refreshed body and mind.  Here are some of the awesome tourist places in Kerala you could visit in August while monsoon weaves its magic all over the land.

Wayanad, one of the northern most districts of the state, located at a height of about 2,100 metre from sea level houses a part of the famed Western Ghats. The monsoon literally transforms the land into a green heaven. As thick forests cover most part of the state you can enjoy the rain by staying in one of the many tree houses available there. Also take a long walk through the mist induced spice plantations and tea gardens. It is a perfect place to live in harmony with the nature and a great place for those who want to get away from the crowd and pollution of the city life.

August is the perfect time to visit the majestic Athirappally waterfalls. The monsoon rejuvenates the 80 ft high waterfalls, which has served as the perfect background for many movies, including the recent blockbuster 'Bahubali'. The waterfall is part of the Chalakkudy River which originates in the Anamudi mountains of the Western Ghats. At Athirappilly the river cascades down in three separate streams by surging around the big rocks. The view is majestic and is best visited during the monsoon month of August.

Five km from Athirappilly is Vazhachal waterfalls, another must place you should visit in August. The falls is also part of Chalakkudy River and has rocky terrain.  Like Athirappilly Vazhachal falls is also located among the lush green forests. During their last India visit Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall Camilla was photographed enjoying the mesmerising views of Athirappilly and Vazhachal falls.

If you want to experience a relaxing stroll through moist laden tea plantations or enjoy the cold weather while sipping a cup of the tea as the rain pours down then Munnar is an ideal place for you. But please be really careful while you drive in the downpour as the roads to this hill station could get slippery during the monsoon and don't forget to pack warm clothes as the weather could hit the minus mark during the monsoon.

Munnar is preferred by many honeymooners during the month of August as the monsoon rains would ignite the flames of passion in you. It is also a great time to visit Thekkady as the Periyar National Park and its surroundings drenched in the rain are draped in a cloak of greenery and brims with life during the monsoon. The second largest lake in Kerala Ashtamudi Lake, which flows through the Kollam district, is an ideal spot for lazy vacation during the monsoon. As the rain pours down you should be sitting in your cottage (if you are vacationing in one of the resorts there) and enjoy a steaming cup of brew or indulge in the mouth-watering and scrumptious Kerala cuisine, including the famed seafood items.

If you are an avid reader, you must be familiar with the place Kumarakom as the place has played a major part in Booker Prize winning novel 'God of Small Things' by Arundhati Roy. The place has a prominent place in the Kerala tourism map especially because of its beautiful backwaters. The largest freshwater lake in the state Vembanad Lake is part of Kumarakom. It is a perfect place to enjoy the rains. Though we won't recommend the popular houseboat rides during the outpour, August is a perfect time to watch the migratory birds and enjoy the rich greenery of Kerala. Don’t forget to visit Alappuzha as you could witness and enjoy the world famous annual snake boat race in the month of August. The annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which is conducted on the second Saturday of August, is a visual delight. It is held in Punnamada Lake every year and attracts tourists from every part of the world.

You can also enjoy the village life of the district or indulge in Ayurvedic treatments.  The state is also a perfect place to go for an adventure white rafting trip through the rapids of Tejaswini River in Kannur district. The river which originates in the Coorg forest of Karnataka and flows through the Kerala districts of Kannur and Kasargod offers a great opportunity for the adventure tourists. The river has got many swirls, boulders and rocky areas which make the white water rafting through the river a mesmerising experience. August is an ideal month to experience it as the river will be in her full capacity during the rainy season. The rafting starts from Kolladi near Cherupuzha in Kannur district and ends in Kakkadavu in Kasargod district.

Even if you are not a big fan of rainy season, a visit to Kerala during the monsoon won’t disappoint you. As we said earlier, Kerala is known for Ayurvedic treatments and according to experts; the monsoon period is the best time for rejuvenation therapies. According to them, the herbs and concoctions used for these therapies would work perfectly in the cold atmosphere.   So August is the best month to pamper you with a rejuvenating massage or any other Ayurvedic treatments.

5 reasons why you should visit Kerala during the monsoon

Sonam Joshi Sonam Joshi | Times Travel Editor | THINGS TO DO , KERALA Updated : Jul 3, 2018, 03.03 PM IST

Kerala, ‘God’s Own Country’ as it is fondly called, transforms into an absolute paradise during the monsoons. With lush greenery gracing its backwaters and hills, cloudy sunsets, cool breeze and an array of festivals, Kerala becomes a must-visit monsoon destination in the country. Sporadic showers heighten the romance of the season, making it all the more cheerful and pretty. Though monsoons might not be the best time to hit the beaches in Kerala, here are five reasons why you must not miss visiting this beautiful Indian state in monsoons. Snake boat races The months between July and September, typically famous as Kerala monsoon, are water sports season as well, especially with the backwaters around Alappuzha playing host to a series of snake boat races. The most famous of the lot is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, generally held on the second Saturday of August every year. The regatta takes place on the Punnamada Lake, and features ceremonial processions and magnificent floats. Its star attraction is the synchronised rowing of traditional 30 m long snake-boats or chudan valloms , which have a raised prow resembling a snake. The Onam sadya feast This ten-day harvest festival celebrates the homecoming of the mythical king Mahabali, but it's also a good excuse to feast on some of Kerala’s most lip-smacking vegetarian fare. Traditionally served on palm leaves, the nine-course banquet is held on the last or tenth day. It's best savoured at a local home, but you don't manage to get an invite then most local restaurants also offer these meals. The preceding days are filled with costume parades, boat races and shopping discounts. Great hotel deals Sandwiched between Kerala’s sweltering summers and its peak tourist season (November to March), the Kerala monsoon is a great time to snag deals at otherwise expensive hotels and resorts. If you’ve ever fantasised about an indulgent houseboat trawl through the backwaters, then this is the time to get the best bargains. To avail the best discounts, make sure you plan your visit before the end of September, after which tariffs being climbing up again. Ayurvedic therapies Kerala is home to several excellent spas and wellness resorts, and there’s no better time to pamper yourself than the monsoon season. According to Ayurveda, the cool, pleasant weather is ideal for rejuvenation. Sign up for a week-long retreat at top-notch stays such as the Kairali Ayurvedic Healing Village Health Resort in Palakkad or Somatheeram Ayurvedic Health Resort in Kovalam with relaxing oil-based therapies, massages, yoga and a balanced diet that'll cleanse your mind, body and soul. Wayanad's natural splendour With virescent hills carpeted with plantations, rainforests and tumbling waterfalls, Wayanad is one of the essential places to visit in Kerala in August when it pours. After you’ve had your fill of its misty coffee, tea and spice plantations, head to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary that hosts numerous migrating birds in this period. Wayanad’s tourism department also holds an annual monsoon carnival in July with village excursions, rain treks as well as local sports such as mud football and archery.

The Best Time to Visit Kerala

Festivals and Weather by Month in Kerala

places to visit in kerala august

TripSavvy / Lisa Fasol

Kerala is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist destinations in India , and it has something to offer all year-round. However, the best time to visit Kerala is the slightly cooler, dry season that runs from December through February. Not surprisingly, it's also the peak time to go.

You should plan your visit according to what you want to experience (here are some suggested attractions and things to do in Kerala ). It's really important to take the weather into account though, as the climate is a tropical one that receives rainfall from two monsoons.

The Weather in Kerala

The weather in Kerala can be split into three distinct seasons:

  • The dry season from December to February, which also marks peak tourist season.
  • The hot, humid summer season from March to the end of May. Plan to sweat!
  • Monsoon season ( southwest and northeast monsoons ) from the end of May to the end of November, which is punctuated by intermittent, heavy rain.

Kerala is actually a very rainy state, which no doubt contributes to its lush greenery. Rain is commonly received during nine months of the year there. Temperatures typically range from 28 to 32 degrees Celsius (82 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit), although the highlands have been known to drop to around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). During summer, the very high humidity makes the heat feel much hotter.

Rain from the southwest monsoon sometimes causes flooding, of varying degrees, from June to August. It usually eases up near the end of August, and there's a break in the rain during September. However, the northeast monsoon arrives by October. It produces shorter but much more intense bursts of rain, until early December.

If you're a nature enthusiast, Kerala has one of the few national parks in India that remains open during the monsoon season, Periyar National Park . Meanwhile, if you want to avoid the summer heat, the hill station of Munnar in Kerala is a refreshing option.

Due to Kerala's location near the equator, there's very little variation in the length of days throughout the year.

The Best Time for Ayurvedic Treatment in Kerala

While the rainy, monsoon season can be a burden to visitors who wish to spend lots of time outdoors, it's actually the best time to receive Ayurvedic treatment in Kerala. This traditional natural healing system is the medical side of yoga and has been practiced for thousands of years in India. It's particularly widespread in Kerala, due to the the climate and abundant supply of medicinal plants there. The cool, moist, and dust-free atmosphere during the monsoon helps the body's pores to open up, making it most receptive to herbal oils and therapy.

The Cheapest Time to Visit Kerala

If you're looking to save money, Kerala is one of the best places in India to visit during the off-season from May to September. Most hotels and homestays provide substantial discounts of 20-50%, with very attractive offers to draw tourists at this time of year. Kerala Tourism has special packages listed on its website too, for the accommodations it manages.

Key Festivals and Events in Kerala

One of the highlights of visiting Kerala is the state's unique festivals. The most renowned ones occur during the following months:

  • June to September: Snake boat races (dates vary).
  • August to September: Onam festival. The biggest festival of the year in Kerala, celebrations last for about two weeks.
  • December to April: Theyyam. The districts of Kasaragod and Kannur, in northern Kerala, are known for their mysterious costumed spirit-possession theyyam rituals . A detailed calendar can be found here .
  • January to May: Temple and elephant festivals . The festivals feature large processions of bejeweled elephants, drummers and other musicians, colorful floats carrying gods and goddesses, and fireworks. (Do note that although elephants are an integral part of worship in temples in Kerala, those who are concerned about elephant welfare may elect not to attend these festivals).

January is winter in Kerala. The weather is sunny and warm with an average temperature of around 28 degrees Celsius or (82 degrees Fahrenheit) across most of the state, and minimal rainfall and humidity. It is peak tourist season, though, so you can expect to pay a premium for most accommodations up until mid January. You'll also find the backwaters congested with houseboats. Some of the crowd can be avoided by traveling later in the month. Make sure you book well in advance.

Events to check out:

  • Kerala Tourism's  Vasantholsavam Flower Show at Kanakakkunnu Palace in Trivandrum is popular.
  • The Swathi Sangeetholsavam Music Festival at Kuthiramalika Palace in Trivandrum, from January 4 to 13 every year, features classical Indian music.
  • The seven-day Nishagandhi Classical Music and Dance Festival is free to attend at Kanakakkunnu Palace in Trivandrum.
  • Adoor Gajamela at Sree Parthasarathy Temple in Adoor is the state's first temple festival of the year with elephants.
  • Thaipooyam Mahotsavam at Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Alleppey district involves an unusual rapturous ritual dance.
  • Week-long Ernakulathappan Utsavam at the Shiva Temple in Ernakulum, near Kochi, is a cultural extravaganza.

While it's still considered winter in Kerala, temperatures and humidity creep higher towards the end of the month, reaching up to 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit). However, the hills remain cool. It's an ideal time of year to visit Kerala, as there are less tourists compared to January but the weather is still comfortable. Head to the beaches in Kerala . Plus, there are many weird and wonderful traditional temple festivals happening.

  • The Kerala Utsavam Folklore Festival showcases more than 200 folk art forms.
  • Kuttikkol Thampuratti Theyyam at Kuttikkol Thampuratty Bhagavathy temple, in Kasaragod district, is one of the state's grandest theyyam festivals.
  • Machattu Mamangam has a colorful procession of huge horse effigies that are offered to the temple deity. It's held at Machattu Thiruvanikavu temple, in Kerala's Thrissur district.
  • Highlights at Pariyanampetta Pooram, at Pariyanampetta Bhagavathy temple in Palakkad district, are folk arts and a procession of decorated elephants.
  • Held at Chettikulangara temple in Alleppey district, Chettikulangara Bharani features a procession of towering embellished cloth-covered structures.
  • Men wearing masks engage in mock fights at night during Chittur Konganpada, at Chitturkavu Bhagavathy temple in Palakkad district.
  • Seven large golden elephant statues are carried in procession during Ezhara Ponnana , at Ettumanoor Mahadeva temple in Kottayam district.
  • Chinakkathoor Pooram features fabulous folk art performances and elephant procession, at Chinakkathoor Bhagavathi temple in Palakkad district.
  • Trivandrum goes up in smoke during Attukal Pongala , when the world's largest gathering of women for a religious activity cooks up a special offering for the goddess Attukalama.

The tourist season concludes in March. What most westerners would think of as spring is actually summer in Kerala. While the temperature doesn't increase much, the humidity is noticeably turned up in coastal areas. Evenings, after sunset, are cooler and more hospitable though. If you can deal with humidity, you'll be able to enjoy Kerala and its many temple festivals relatively tourist-free. Otherwise, you'll be constantly wiping yourself down with a handkerchief by the end of March!

  • Parippally Gajamela in Kollam district is one of the state's most impressive temple festivals, with up to 50 elephants present.
  • Uthralikkavu Pooram at Sree Ruthira Mahakalikavu temple in Thrissur District, also has a procession of elephants.
  • Attuvela Mahotsavam is a water carnival. A procession of canoes carries colossal temple replicas to Elankavu Bhagavathy Temple, in Kottayam district.
  • The rather alarming spectacle at Kodungalloor Bharani must be seen to be believed. Thousands of sword-wielding oracles in a trance swarm Kodungalloor Bhagavathy temple in Thrissur district.
  • Local villagers make 70-80 foot tall structures that are carried in procession, lead by percussion instruments, at Malanada Kettukazcha . Cultural programs run throughout the night too. The venue is Poruvazhi Malanada temple, in Pathanamthitta district.
  • The 10-day Painkuni Festival is celebrated by the royal family of Travencore at Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple in Trivandrum. It features lofty fiberglass statues of the Pandavas brothers (from the Hindu epic The Mahabharata ) placed outside the temple to please the Rain God, Indra.
  • Thirunakkara Arattu is another of Kerala's famous temple festivals with elephants and folk dances. It happens at Thirunakkara Mahadeva temple in Kottayam district.

High humidity makes April a very uncomfortable month in Kerala. If visiting the state then, it's recommended that you stick to mountainous areas. Head for the hills at Munnar or Wayanad.

  • Nenmara Vallangi Vela at Nellikulangara Bhagavathy temple in Palakkad district offers some captivating performances of indigenous art forms and procession of elephants.
  • Kadammanitta Patayani features a magnificent display of the ceremonial Padayani masked folk dance, to please the goddess at Kadammanitta Devi temple in Pathanamthitta district.
  • Kerala's biggest temple and elephant festival, the Thrissur Pooram , usually takes place in late April (or May).

May is an avoidable time to visit Kerala due to the brutal energy-sapping humidity and summer school holidays in India. Although it's hot, don't expect to be alone. Indians are used to the weather conditions and the state attracts plenty of vacationing families. The southwest monsoon arrives with a bang in Kerala in late May, providing much needed respite from the heat. If you want to chase the monsoon in India, Kovalam beach in Kerala is one of the first places to receive monsoon rain. You can watch the storm roll in there.

  • Kannambra Vela brings the summer temple festival season to a close in Kerala's Palakkad-Thrissur region.

The southwest monsoon season gathers intensity, making this a wet—albeit inexpensive—time to visit Kerala. Torrential downpours of rain occur throughout the month. For those who are willing to embrace the rain and humidity, there are enticing travel deals available. Be careful if you have health concerns such as sensitivity to mold though. Viral fever is also common at this time of year. Follow these tips to avoid getting sick during the monsoon season .

  • The Champakkulam Boat Race, in Alappuzha district, is the first snake boat race of the season.
  • Ochira Kali is a mock fight that commemorates an historic battle. It's held in wetlands near Parabrahma temple in Ochira.
  • Kottiyoor Utsavam takes place at two temples — Akkare Kottiyoor and Ikkare Kottiyoor in dense forest in Kannur district. It runs for 28 days. Rituals on the first and last days attract the most spectators.

July is also very wet in Kerala, as the monsoon continues. It brings the state's waterfalls to life though. You can still expect rainfall most days, particularly in the afternoons. It's usually moderate but is sometimes light, or heavy with thunderstorms.

  • Carnatic music at the Sree Neelakantasivan Aaradhana Music Festival in Trivandrum is dedicated to Saint Neelakanta.
  • The ceremonial feeding of temple elephants during the Njangattiri Aanayoottu festival , at Njangattiri Bhagavathi temple in Palakkad district, is worth seeing.
  • There's another similar elephant feeding ritual Aanayoottu at Vadakkumnathan temple in Thrissur district.

The southwest monsoon begins retreating in August. The volume of rain is less and there are a few more days without rain.

  • Kerala's biggest snake boat race, the Nehru Trophy , is held on the second Saturday of August every year.
  • The  Uthradam Thirunal Pamba Boat Race , Payippad Boat Race and Aranmula Boat Race are also major snake boat races. They take place around the time of the Onam festival.
  • Athachamayam marks the start of Onam celebrations. It happens at Thripunithura near Kochi and features a magnificent parade.
  • The main day of Onam involves a lot of scrumptious feasting. Homes are adorned with bright floral arrangements.
  • Kerala Tourism hosts an Onam Week cultural program in Trivandrum.
  • Pulikkali is another part of the Onam festival. Men dress up as tigers with body paint and dance to the beat of drums through the streets in Thrissur. It's an entertaining spectacle.

The end of the southwest monsoon results in many more dry days, particularly during the second half of the month. The weather is still hot and humid but bearable. Most low-season discounts are valid until the end of September. It's a good time to visit Kerala, as the backwaters are clean and the landscape is invigorated. Go hiking and spend time in nature.

  • 28th Onam Kala Kettu Festival is a unique harvest thanksgiving festival that involves gigantic idols of bulls, made out of straw and cloth by locals, being pulled on wheels to the Parabrahma temple in Ochira.
  • Neelamperoor Padayani , at Palli Bhagavathi temple in Alleppey district, features a rare display of ritual Padayani folk dance. It also has a parade of giant effigies of mythical characters.

The northeast monsoon brings another lot of rain in October, with less frequent but more copious downpours. The tourist season gets underway in October and there's a corresponding rise in prices.

  • Navarathri Sangeetholsavam is a nine-day classical music festival that's held at the Fort Palace Complex in Trivandrum during Navaratri .
  • The Panachikkadu Festival is also part of Navaratri celebrations in Kerala. A sacred "initiation into education" ceremony is performed for kids at Panachikkadu Saraswati temple in Kottayam district.
  • Snake worship is a fixture at the Ayilyam festival at Sree Nagaraja Swami temple in Vettikode, in Alleppey district.
  • Mannarasala Ayilyam is another festival of snake worship, at  Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja temple in Alleppey district. The temple's snake statues are brought out in procession.
  • The Revathi Pattathanam festival at Tali Mahadeva temple in Kozhikode district is dedicated to the wisdom of the Vedas (Hindu texts) and commemoration of an erstwhile meeting of scholars there.

If you don't mind a few tropical thunderstorms, Kerala is quite pleasant in November. There are more dry days than rainy ones. The Diwali festival isn't widely celebrated in Kerala. However, due to Diwali school holidays there's an influx of tourists from other parts of the country.

  • The temple deities at famed Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Trivandrum are carried to the sea and given a bath during the Alpasi Festival. A grand procession is led by the head of the Travancore royal family.
  • Massive chariots take to the streets around Sree Viswanatha Swamy temple at the Kalpathi Ratholsavam festival in Palakkad district.

December is predominantly dry and sunny, with a slight drop in temperature and decreasing humidity as the climate transitions into winter. Peak tourist season starts in mid December and prices jump accordingly.

  • The 10-day Perumthitta Tharavad Kottamkuzhy is the first major theyyam festival of the season, with a wide variety of performances.
  • Kanathoor Nalvar Bhoothasthanam , at the end of December, is another important theyyam festival with about 400 different performances.
  • Fish tops the list of offerings to the folk deity during the unusual Puthari Thiruvappana festival at Sree Muthappan temple in Parassinikadavu, Kannur district.
  • The colorful Cochin Carnival is a fun festival held during the last week of December.
  • Christmas is celebrated with enthusiasm across Kerala, as the state has a large Christian population.
  • The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is the biggest exhibition and contemporary arts festival in Asia. It takes place every second year in and around Kochi, commencing in December and concluding in March.

For the best weather—mild temperatures and least chance of rain—visit from December to February. Beginning in March, temperatures rise and it gets uncomfortably hot and humid.

The best weather also coincides with peak tourist season. Visiting from December to February is the best weather in Kerala, but make your reservations early.

The monsoon season starts at the end of May and lasts until November. Showers are common, but they aren't so intense that they'll ruin your trip. Plus, hotels usually offer amazing travel deals during this time.

The 10 Best Places to Travel in August

By Caitlin Morton

best places to travel in august Viewing tower at Angama Amboseli Kenya

Summer is at its peak, temperatures are high, and back-to-school season is looming on the periphery. The best places to travel in August represent that universal desire to jettison all 9-to-5 obligations and indulge in an epic trip —the kind you’ve been dreaming about for years (or longer).

Whether you’re exploring the northern stretches of Quebec, following the Great Migration in Kenya, or partying it up at some of the Caribbean’s best festivals , this month is the time to loosen your purse strings and your inhibitions. (If you don’t want to loosen anything too much, we have plenty of excellent domestic destinations as well.) To help you squeeze in that one final summer vacation before Labor Day, here are 10 of the best places to travel in August.

This article has been updated since its original publish date.

Câmara de Lobos Madeira Portugal

Madeira, Portugal

This island, 300 miles west of Morocco, is synonymous with winemaking and wine drinking. The Madeira Wine Festival (August 25 through September 15) showcases how the islanders developed the unique oxidation process to create their trademark wine six centuries ago.

There are events and celebrations throughout the island, but be sure to visit Cabo Girão, where the microclimate around the cliffs allowed Jesuits to cultivate malvasia grapes and develop the sweet malmsey wine. The vertigo-inducing skywalk here is the highest such installation in Europe, though it’s best to try it before imbibing too much.

best places to travel in august Viewing tower at Angama Amboseli Kenya

The Great Migration is one of the awe-inspiring natural spectacles on the planet, marking the season when more than 1.5 million wildebeest sweep through East Africa between July and October every year. In Kenya, the best place to watch the phenomenon is the Masai Mara National Reserve, with ample rivers (that’s where the real action takes place) and cliffs overlooking the savannah.

Set up shop at one of Angama Amboseli ’s 10 tented suites, all of which afford direct views of Kilimanjaro. The Hot List-winning property is more known for migrating elephants rather than wildebeest, but you can join game drives to spot other wildlife such as giraffes, warthogs, and big cats—then head back for a massage and soak in the infinity pool.

Woodstock Vermont

Woodstock, Vermont

One of the most beautiful towns in America, Woodstock’s appeal extends far beyond fall foliage and craft beer. The city oozes New England charm in any season, which is clearly evidenced by the lovely and quaint Woodstock Inn & Resort . The 142-room hotel thrives in the summer, when the on-site garden boasts more than 200 varieties of produce that get sent directly to the property’s two restaurants.

And the seasonal delights don’t end there. Just down the road at the Billings Farm & Museum, the 20,000-square-foot Sunflower House will enter its sixth year in bloom this summer. Thousands of sunflowers (which reach peak bloom in mid-August) will be planted in a maze-like structure, ranging in height from 18 inches to a staggering 14 feet.

Six Senses La Sagesse Grenada

While people have historically overlooked Grenada in favor of its Lesser Antilles sisters, we have a feeling that’s about to change. (We did name the island one of the best places to visit in 2024 , after all.) A lot of the uptick in interest has to do with convenience: JetBlue launched direct flights from Boston to Grenada in late 2023 (joining the existing nonstops out of JFK), and Air Canada now has up to four flights per week between Toronto and Maurice Bishop International Airport.

Once you’ve completed your delightfully easy flight, you’ll wonder why you’ve waited until now to visit—those white-sand beaches, waterfalls, and invariably green landscapes can turn anyone into an immediate devotee. Book a stay at the newly opened Six Senses La Sagesse , where every room has a private pool and the two-floor spa overlooks a lagoon. Then head out to participate in Grenada’s famous Spicemas festival (August 1-13). The Spice Island comes alive with parades, food, dancing, and performances, and you’d be remiss not to catch at least a few days of the party.

minnesota state fair

Summer is the season of state fairs, and few states do the tradition justice better than Minnesota. The nation’s second-largest fair (after Texas, of course) features epic events to match its size: outdoor beer festivals, classic car shows, Blake Shelton and Ludacris concerts, and 500 food stands serving up all things deep-fried and skewered.

The fair takes place from August 22 to September 2 this year, giving you plenty of August wiggle room to explore nearby Minneapolis (about 15 minutes away from the fairgrounds in Falcon Heights), a city that only gets more interesting the longer you stay there.

The largest of Canadas 10 provinces—another one of our best places to visit in 2024—has so much more to offer beyond...

Gyrfalcon Islands, Canada

The largest of Canada’s 10 provinces—another one of our best places to visit in 2024 —has so much more to offer beyond Quebec City (though we’d never completely bypass the city on any trip above the border). Quebec’s northernmost region of Nunavik doesn’t typically appear on most travelers’ wish lists, but the homeland of Inuit people has some new bookable experiences that promise cultural immersion with a touch of extra convenience.

Ungava Polar Eco-Tours, an Inuit-owned tour operator, has officially started offering five-day trips to the Gyrfalcon Islands—an uninhabited archipelago in Ungava Bay. You can book five-night itineraries from August 3 and beyond, all of which provide front-row seats to the region’s most fascinating sights: Marvel at the 55-foot-high tides of Ungava Bay, hop on a boat to spot polar bears and hairy muskoxen, explore the islands’ terrain on an ATV tour, and—if you’re lucky—watch the northern lights as you sip warm drinks around the fire.

costa smeralda sardinia italy

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is one of Europe’s most glamorous summer getaways, with stunning white sands and yacht-crammed waters off Porto Cervo. Lean into the luxe vibe by booking one of the suites at the Hotel Cala di Volpe —and remember to pack the kind of bikinis that were never designed to actually get wet for its ultra-exclusive beach club.

The suites, decked out in whitewashed walls and Sardinian marble floors, are perfect for kicking your feet up between pool visits. At night, book dinner at one of the restaurants on Porto Cervo’s beloved Piazzetta—choose between the classic fish spot, Il Pescatore, or Novikov, an Asian fusion restaurant from owner and Russian restaurateur Arkady.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley

Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is one of the best places to travel in August, corresponding with the region's harvest season (August through October). The crowds tend to be a bit denser during this time, but you can still have a luxurious, intimate vacation—if you know where to look. Start by setting your sights on the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley , the only Napa property that sits on an active winery. After a morning at the spa, you can walk to your afternoon wine tasting—no wine bus or private driver required.

For a not-so-average tasting experience, book The Legacy Tour onboard the Napa Wine Train. Expect sparkling wine samples, a three-hour tour of the valley, and a four-course gourmet meal.

Camp Sarika Amangiri Utah

Utah is renowned for its national parks (its state parks are pretty spectacular, too), but there are plenty of reasons to visit this summer outside of the obvious draws. Get your dose of thrills with an ATV ride around the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, with 2,000 acres of sand that turn pink as the sun begins to set. Or choose from ten ziplines (one of which reaches a speed of 65 mph) at Deer Creek State Park.

If you prefer to watch the action from the sidelines, watch drivers try to break world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Bonneville Speed Week (August 3-9). Whatever type of activity you crave, Utah probably has it somewhere. While you're in the state, you might as well make a point to stay at the sensational Amangiri resort in Canyon Point: The remote location, food, views, and spa treatments are well worth a detour.

isla holbox mexico

Isla Holbox, Mexico

May through September is whale shark season in the Mexican Caribbean, when the magnificent beasts emerge in the warm waters between Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy every year. August is a particularly great month for whale sightings due to the amount of plankton in the water, which the whales gather to feed on.

This year, head to dreamy Isla Holbox to celebrate Whale Shark Day on August 30—no better time to try your hand at a once-in-a-lifetime whale shark dive. Eco-boutique hotel Las Nubes de Holbox is the only hotel adjacent to the Yum Balam Nature Reserve and connects its guests to sustainable whale shark tours around the island’s stunning natural landscapes. Afterward, relax at the Orquídea Spa with a salt bath or facial with organic Mexican products.

Wayanad-Kozhikode tunnel road project: Land acquisition nearly over, work likely to begin in August

 alt=

Kalpetta: The work on tunnel road project, linking Wayanad with Kozhikode district as an alternative to the existing Thamarassery Ghat road (NH 766) is set to begin within two months. One among the prestigious projects of the LDF government, preparations are in place to launch the construction works of the 8.17 km long Kozhikode-Wayanad Tunnel Road project with twin tunnels (Cost Rs.2149 crore) which is expected to kick-start by August. For almost a decade, the Ghat section of the road was a nightmare for commuters as the heavy traffic through the road caused hours’ long traffic jams along the 9 km stretch of the NH 766.

The land acquisition on both sides at Wayanad and Kozhikode districts, are almost over. On the Kozhikode side as many as 9.3037 hectares land out of 11.1582 hectares earmarked for the project, has been acquired and already handed over to PWD on June 6. The procedures for the acquisition of remaining 1.85 hectares land also are underway. On the Wayanad side the land acquisition was completed and the entire land of 8.32 hectares was handed over to the PWD on May 31.

Environmental clearance is still being awaited for the project. An amount of Rs. 3,80,48,123/- has been transferred to the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning (CAMPA) account of the state government and an equal extent of private land has been already acquired. The Environment Impact Study also has been completed. Thiruvambadi MLA Linto Joseph told Onmanorama that the procedures for the award of contract for executing the project are expected to be finalized by the end of June.

''Even then those who win the bid can take one month period for executing the contract and work may start by August,'' he said, adding that as the monsoon would be at its peak, weather will be crucial for finalising the date of launching the project. The project connects Kozhikode district with Wayanad district through a parallel tunnel road connecting Marippuzha in Thiruvambadi, Kozhikode with Kalladi in Meppadi in Wayanad.

The entire fund for the project has been already allotted under the KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board) scheme. In addition, Rs 108 Crore has been already sanctioned for the construction of an approach road from Thiruvambadi to Marippuzha (17.5 km) the work of which has been allotted to the Uralungal Labour Contract Society. The survey for the tunnel started in September 2020. Being enlisted among the 30 prime projects of the LDF government, the Chief Minister directly monitors the progress of the project every three months.
