Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is is one of the most purely wild places in the United States. You can drive for miles without seeing another soul. Plus, you can find hidden lakes with no boats, houses, or humans. Also, you can see ospreys and eagles fighting mid-air in a show worthy of National Geographic. And all of this you can do amid stops for ice cream and fresh fish as you make your way through “Gods Country” on this Upper Peninsula road trip. So continue reading to find the perfect itinerary for your Upper Peninsula road trip that will help you find the “pure” part of Pure Michigan.

This 5-day Michigan itinerary is a one way drive from Sault (pronounced Soo) Ste. Marie to Copper Harbor. However, if you want to make this into a loop you can. Simply leave out Kitch-iti-kipi as you drive the northern shore of the Upper Peninsula and then loop your way back through the south shore on your way back and visit Kitch-iti-kipi on the way back through. Highway 2 is one of my favorite roads in the country. So while there aren’t a lot of stops along the south shore of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the drive is beautiful.

If you make this into an Upper Peninsula road trip loop, you’re able to start and stop from the same place which is definitely a bonus if you’re planning on flying to this road trip. There are no cheap or easy to access airports in the UP, however Escanaba would probably be your best option. But since most people drive to the UP, we’ll write this 5-day itinerary for our Upper Peninsula road trip as though it is a one way trip.

If you're starting your Upper Peninsula road trip in the lower peninsula, consider spending a day on Mackinac Island before crossing the Mackinac Bridge.

Where to stay in michigan’s upper peninsula.

We’ll provide you with some locations to stay each night that will allow you to be near restaurants and also set you up to do minimal extra driving. However, we’ve visited so many times and stayed in so many different places, we aren’t going to bother giving you exact recommendations. There are plenty of campsites, clean hotels, and cute home rentals in the UP, so we’re confident you can find something perfect for your needs.

One thing to know when making reservations, the Upper Peninsula’s home rentals tend to be targeted to large groups and come with the price tag to match. So if you are looking for a large group, go with a home rental. But if you are looking for a small family or couples vacation, hotels will be your best bet.

Our links in the U.P. road trip itinerary below will take you to hotels in the area. If you’re interested in home rentals, use the search bar below.

By buying from the links below, we'll earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Read the full Terms and Conditions here.

However, also consider camping! The Upper Peninsula has a ton of public land! This means that you’ll find lots of cheap and well maintained campgrounds scattered throughout the peninsula. You can search and make reservations for these campgrounds here .

Upper Peninsula Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1 – the soo.

Arrive in the UP and make your way to Sault Ste. Marie (aka The Soo). You’re probably driving from somewhere else, so you probably won’t arrive until the afternoon. However, if you do arrive earlier, consider spending some time in St. Ignace in the morning.

While in The Soo, the one must-do is watching the locks or even riding through them. You can watch the locks operate from shore or you can choose between one of the tour companies that will take you through the locks. This is a really cool experience for the whole family. I loved riding through these locks as a child. You’ll get to experience the world’s largest locking system from within the system! You’ll also get to ride through these locks alongside some of the largest ships to sail the 7 seas, or the 5 Great Lakes, in this case.

Stay overnight in Sault Ste. Marie.

Day 2 – Lake Superior

Drive from Sault Ste. Marie to Whitefish point. Once at Whitefish Point, explore the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum . This is a really cool museum that explores all of the shipwrecks that have occurred on the Great Lakes, mainly Lake Superior. You’ll find that special attention is paid to the mystery of the Edmund Fitzgerald – and yes they play the song a lot. This is a great stop for people interested in unsolved mysteries, scuba diving or boating.

You’ll also find a beautiful lighthouse here that you can climb for an extra fee. The beach along Lake Superior here is a great place to spend some time playing in so very cold waters. This sand beach is a great place for a lakeside picnic lunch.

Lake Superior

After lunch, head south to Taquamenon Falls . This is the most popular waterfall in Michigan. Here you’ll find two sets of falls to explore. The upper falls are the biggest set, which is most popular for viewing. However, make sure to take the short drive to the lower falls to get the full effect. At both stops, you’ll find that there are really short hikes to the waterfall viewing points. Also, you’ll find some spots along the hike where you have the opportunity to splash about in the Tahquamenon River. The kids will love this spot if you let them play in the water 🙂

Tahquamenon Falls

Stay the night in or around Newberry . Accommodations in this area are limited so you could also stay another night in Sault Ste. Marie.

Day 3 – Waterfalls and Pictured Rocks

Wake up early and head to Kitch-iti-kipi springs. Kitch-iti-kipi , or Big Springs, is a big clear pool of bright blue water fed by an underground spring. This short detour on your route is really a fun one.

Kitch-iti-kipi

However, if this is too much of a detour for you to take, consider driving along the lakeshore between Newberry and Munising. Whatever you do, do not take the Seney stretch (Highway 28), which is known by all Michiganders for being the most boring stretch of road in the state. Seriously, it’s so boring and straight that you can land a space shuttle on it.

Next, head to Munising. Grab lunch at one of the cute local restaurants. If you really want the full UP experience, try a pasty at Muldoon’s. Muldoon’s is considered by many to be the best pasties in the UP.

Afterwards, mix together some waterfall watching and the vistas of Pictured Rocks as you explore Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore .

First, stop at Munising Falls. This short walk will take you in to the woods to see this beautiful waterfalls. Take in the vistas from the upper and lower viewing decks.

Munising Falls

Next, Head to Miners Falls. Here, you’ll walk just short of 1 mile to see this waterfall in the woods. The upper viewing deck doesn’t give the best views. However, pretty much everyone there seems to jump off the viewing deck and scramble down to the river to take in the views from the bottom of the falls. This is not an official path, it is hard to climb back up, and you probably shouldn’t be there since, again, it’s not an official path. But that being said, the view from the upper deck really isn’t great (NPS, please make a lower deck viewing area so us rule followers can get a better view).

Pictured Rocks

Next, go to Miners Castle. This is the most picturesque of the rock formations along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.   Plus, t his stop takes just a few short minutes to hop out and see the Upper Outlook, which is the best view of Miners Castle.

Castle Rock

If you would like to then walk to the Lower Outlook, it will take about 30 minutes. This outlook will give you the view of Lake Superior from behind Miners Castle.

Finish out your trip into Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore with a stop at Miners beach. This is one of the best beaches on Lake Superior and is a great place to dip you toes into the freezing waters. Or if you’re brave (or a small cold-resistant child) consider spending a bit of time here doing some actual swimming.

man on Miner's Beach

After exploring Pictured Rocks by land, you’ll definitely want to explore them via water. This is one of the best ways to see the beautiful cliffs. You can chose to take either a boat tour or a kayak tour. My favorite tour is the glass bottom boat that operates out of Munising . You can see the cliffs up close and get to see some cool shipwrecks in the harbor as well. They also have sunset cruises if you’d like to take an evening journey, it’s one of the best tours out there. You should plan on dedicating 3-4 hours to this. This is also one of the few things you should book in advance. Tours often sell out, especially the sunset cruises and weekend tours.

Have diner in Munising. We like Pictured Rocks Pizza! Stay overnight in or around Munising.

Day 4 – Marquette

Head to Marquette in the morning. On your way there stop to drive or walk through the Lakenenland . This self proclaimed Junkyard Art park is home to some pretty cool outdoor sculpture. Even better for the kiddos, several of these sculptures allow you to play on them.

metal sculpture at Lakenland

Arrive in Marquette and explore one of the few large towns that the Upper Peninsula has to offer.

Make sure to head to Presque Isle Park, one of the gems of town. Also, consider hiking to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain for some great views.

If you’re natured out by this point in your trip, consider exploring the small downtown area and doing some beer tastings at the breweries.

Leave Marquette in the late afternoon and make your way to Houghton. As you head to Houghton, make sure to stop at Da Yoopers Tourist Trap . It ridiculously touristy and doesn’t even pretend to be anything else. But there is something so incredibly UP about it and it will give you some insight into all the little Yooper jokes. This is just some plain ole’ dumb fun to be had.

Da Yooper Tourist Trap two seater outhouse

Stay overnight in Houghton.

Day 5 – The Keewanaw Peninsula

Have breakfast in Houghton at Soumi’s Cafe. This is a great place for a hearty traditional Finnish-style breakfast to fill you up for your adventures.

Drive up to Copper Harbor in the morning. Explore the northern most point of Michigan and some of the best natural spaces in the state. We love driving from Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor and stopping at all the roadside parks along the way. This will give you a really wonderful taste of the Keewanaw Peninsula and everything that it has to offer.

Houghton/Hancock

Head deep into the heart of Copper country with a visit to the Quincy Mine . This is a winner for the kiddos! Delve into the remains of an actual mine and explore the history of mining in the Keewanaw. You’ll learn firsthand what it was like to work in the copper mines and even get to be outfitted in a cool hard hat!

Head back to Houghton for lunch. Consider pizza at the Ambassador. PS: I like to think our food recommendations for Houghton are particularly on point as they’re coming from a Michigan Tech alumni.

After lunch, explore Houghton. Wander downtown and explore the campus of Michigan Technical College. Make sure you stop at the Mineral Museum on campus. It’s one of the best rock museums out there with really cool specimens from around the world.

Grab dinner at Joey’s for some of the best fish and chips on the planet and don’t forget to stop for a drink at the Keweenaw Brewing Company.

Want to Adjust the Upper Peninsula Itinerary

If you have extra time, consider spending an extra day exploring Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. One of the best hikes in the UP has been excluded from this Upper Peninsula road trip itinerary for the sake of time. However, if you have extra time, spend it completing in the Chapel Basin Loop hike, which will allow you to see Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach. Spend your extra time in Munising exploring some additional waterfalls. Like Alger Falls and more!

If you have even more time or want to create an Upper Peninsula road trip itinerary of your own, check out our list of things to do in the UP here.

We hope this Upper Peninsula road trip itinerary has helped you to plan your own Michigan vacation . We’ve spent so much time in the UP, we really love sharing it with you. So if you have any questions, please leave them in the comments section and we’d be happy to answer them with our years of UP knowledge.

Thanks for the outline for a 5 day tour of the UP MI. I was trying to get information on places to stay but the links didn’t work. When planning, I was overwhelmed by the great options but your 5 day trip nearly hit all the main stops I had hoped to make. From Michigan myself, but living in CA, I have very limited experience with the UP. Debating the Sault St Marie and looking to maybe hike Porcupine Mt area. Any suggestions you have on that would be great. Places to stay or how to activate link would be appreciated. Thanks, Frank

Hi Frank! Thanks for reaching out and letting me know. I did reactivate all of those links. We wrote this UP road trip up as a though you’re driving from the Lower Peninsula (as that’s where a majority of people come from). So we didn’t include the Porcupine Mt area for timings sake. However, if you are coming from Wisconsin, or flying directly into the UP, the Porcupine Mts are definitely better in our opinion. However, we are adults with no kids. I think kids will generally prefer the Soo, due to the big boats, I know I did when I was a kid. I hope this helps you decide!

The ULTIMATE Summer Upper Peninsula Road Trip Guide

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is like no other place on earth. Sandwiched between three of the greatest lakes in the world, it’s filled with peaceful forests, magnificent waterfalls , ancient rock formations, quiet and cozy towns, and miles and miles of shoreline — making it the perfect setting for a one-of-a-kind road trip.

Before you get started though, there’s one thing to warn you about: the UP is big. Like, really big. Like, a road trip across the whole thing to hit every sight you absolutely need to see could eat up a serious chunk of your vacation days.

So we suggest taking this guide and picking a segment or two to take at a time, then stitching them together throughout the summer. Trust us — you won’t want to miss any of these incredible destinations, or the beautiful journeys between them, during your summer Upper Peninsula road trip !

Soo Locks In Sault Ste. Marie - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

St. Ignace to Sault Ste. Marie

After making your own way north through the lower mitten, your journey starts by crossing the Mackinac Bridge into  St. Ignace . Right off the bridge is a classic road trip tourist stop — Castle Rock, a large rock formation where you can get your exercise in for the day by climbing to the top for a great view of the straights.

This is also where you’ll find Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox statues and an old-school gift shop perfect for adults and kids alike.

If you’re still feeling touristy, take a stop at the Mystery Spot where you can — well, you’ll have to stop to find out for yourself! A quick hour up I-75 will take you to Sault Ste. Marie , one of the oldest settlements in the midwest.

Home to Lake Superior State University , there are plenty of restaurants and shops to quell your hunger (for food and gifts) before the catching a Soo Locks Boat Tour .

Though there are plenty of cruises to choose from, the main attraction is the operation of the Soo Locks, where you actually go through the world’s largest locking system and cruise alongside giant lake and ocean ships.

Whitefish Point - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Sault Ste Marie to Paradise and Whitefish Point

Leaving “The Soo,” you’ll take Lakeshore Drive for a scenic trip to Paradise (adorable, we know) where you can get some memorabilia and classic midwest fare. Then it’s just a short drive into Tahquamenon Falls State Park , the most iconic waterfalls in Michigan.

There are two sets of waterfalls, so make sure you plan enough time for both the upper and lower region of the river. If you only want to stop quickly for a few pictures, the upper falls are very accessible and can let you get on your way.

But if you want to stay longer, the park has a campground and gorgeous hiking trails that can easily extend your stay to a day or two.

Once you decide to hit the road, Whitefish Point is just half an hour north. The point features one of the oldest operating lighthouses on Lake Superior, surrounded by beautiful, wide-open vistas of the water.

If you’re into Michigan or maritime history at all, the facility also features the coolest shipwreck museum around. The admission fee for the museum isn’t too bad, especially if you bundle as a family, and for just a bit extra you can climb to the top of the lighthouse tower for some truly incredible views.

View Of The Grand Marais Bay And Lighthouse - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Whitefish Point to Grand Marais

A two-hour drive is all it takes to get from Whitefish Point to the cutest, friendliest town you’ll find in all of Michigan — maybe the world. Grand Marais, the eastern gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , is home to only 500 people year-round, but it is the perfect stopping point (or week-long destination — there’s plenty of lodging and campsites!) for your road trip.

Eccentric restaurants like West Bay Diner and the Dune Saloon keep you fed, while kitschy stops like the Pickle Barrel (where the teeny-weenies live) and the  Gitche Gumee Agate and History Museum and store provide plenty of entertainment.

When it’s time to venture out, take in the pristine bay beach, soak up the sun, and test your meddle by swimming in Lake Superior — it really is cold though. If you want something more rocky and adventurous, you can head out to Agate Beach and watch the waves roll in.

Chapel Rock In Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Grand Marais to Munising

The next stretch of road is its own part of the journey, and you’ll take H-58 from Grand Marais to Munising for the 198 twists and turns along Lake Superior. On this route, you can top by the breathtaking Sable Falls , Lake, Dunes, and other Pictured Rocks waterfalls .

If you’re really in a hurry, or really don’t want to enjoy the scenery, you can instead chose to take M-28 for the Seney Stretch — rumored to be the most boring road in Michigan. Either route will drop you off in Munising, and it’s certainly not hard to decide what to do there, as it’s home to the Pictured Rocks and all of the great ways to experience the landscape.

If you’re wondering if Pictured Rocks are all that they’re cracked up to be, they are. You have to get away from land, or at least on the very edge, to see the formations, and you can choose from a boat tour, kayaking out with a guide , or hiking to Chapel Rock to view it from land. Stop by Chapel Falls, just east of the Chapel Rock hike, for another incredible waterfall display.

Munising  is full of lodging and dining options, though we suggest at least one stop at  Muldoon’s for a pasty , in case you haven’t had one yet. But if you want to get your show on the road, M-28 takes you right along Lake Superior for a little less than an hour and drops you off at the hippest town in the UP.

Superior Dome Nmu - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Munising to Marquette

Marquette is just the coolest. Home to Northern Michigan University and the Superior Dome, the largest wooden dome in the world, it’s the perfect combination of up-north charm and college town.

Though this is definitely the place to take your time and eat at one (or many) or Marquette’s fabulous restaurants , make sure to also swing by  Lagniappes for live zydeco music, heaps of atmosphere, and authentic New Orleans cajun grub.

There are some very cool bars around downtown as well, including Blackrocks Brewery , literally a bar in a house with incredible an amount of charm.

For your outdoor activities, the hiking is outstanding at  Presque Isle Park and Sugarloaf Mountain . The tourist state park is exactly what it sounds like, great for a relaxed drive or walk through the forest with the lake in the background.

Portage Lake Lift Bridge In Houghton - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Marquette to Houghton

From one college town to another, travel up to the Keweenaw to Houghton , home of  Michigan Technological University .

Between these two cities is Michigan’s highest point of elevation at Mount Arvon . The detour can add about two hours, plus however long it takes you to hike up the 1,300 feet above Lake Superior.

It is definitely a must for avid hikers and climbers, but if that’s not your thing, you can keep the road trip moving along to your next destination.

Houghton has a large number of neat museums and shops for you to explore, such as the Mineral Museum , which displays and sells rocks, stones, and gems from around the world.

If you stay the night in Houghton, breakfast at  Suomi Cafe on your way out is perfect for inexpensive and delicious classic American breakfast food.

Lighthouse In Copper Harbor - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Houghton to Copper Harbor

An hour farther up the Keweenaw Peninsula gets you to the historic Copper Harbor , a town that used to be the heart of the huge copper industry in the UP. Nowadays, Copper Harbor is bursting with outdoor adventures for dedicated Michiganders to get out and do (though you can still spot green and metallic copper in the water).

If you’re looking for a hike,  Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary  offers a mix of easy, boardwalk trails with steep rocky pathways.

You can of course kayak in the waters around the town to glimpse some of the leftover copper of the past, or hit up Fort Wilkins State Park to glimpse the people of Copper Harbor’s history and walk among the buildings of the preserved fort to see what it was like to live at a frontier fort in the 19th century.

Before the sun sets, the 9-mile ride through Brockway Mountain Drive will give you what might be the best view in all the UP , so have your cameras and your “oohs and ahs” ready.

We recommend staying the night at a hotel or campground in Copper Harbor, because the next leg of your road trip is fairly long and will leave you in the heart of the UP wilderness.

Lake Of The Clouds In The Porcupine Mountains - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Copper Harbor to Ontonagon (Porcupine Mountains)

Driving back down Keweenaw, you’ll want to stock up on gas and snacks in  Ontonagon before heading into the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park . I’m sure many of you have been waiting for this stop on your road trip because the Porkies are home to some of Michigan’s most iconic topographical features.

You can’t say you’ve truly seen what the UP has to offer until you’ve seen  Lake of the Clouds in the Porkies. Drive right up to the viewing area, or hike around to see this recognizable sight, as it really is breathtaking.

There’s also plenty to explore around the rest of the park, such as  Bond Falls ,  Presque Isle River , and the many hiking trails looping throughout the park’s gorgeous backcountry.

Kitch-Iti-Kipi - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Ontonagon to Manistique

Strap in for your longest leg of the road trip, as heading back east from the Porkies to Manistique  takes about three and half hours.

Not only will you want stop in Manistique to stretch your legs and refuel, but it’s also home to  Kitch-iti-Kipi  (or “The Big Spring”) and we’re guessing you’ve seen this one on Facebook.

You’ll get to see the marvels of this genuinely stunning active spring from a raft that floats you out right over the crystal clear blue water. There’s a park store and gift shop, so you can brag to your Facebook friends about seeing to this remarkable oddity in our home state.

This cute town also offers the perfect setting for boardwalk trekking and dining, or you can venture over to  Mackinaw Trail Winery for some tasting and relaxing after all your outdoor exercising.

Cut River Bridge - Lake Scenic Byway Us-2

Manistique to St. Ignace

The last leg of your journey winds along US-2, on the edge of Lake Michigan’s northern shore. It’s another one of the prettiest drives you can get in Michigan, with the lake on one side and beautiful UP forest on the other.

A quick stop at Cut River Bridge  provides an incredible look at a 150-foot gorge dug out by the Cut River leading out to Lake Michigan. It makes for only a 10 to 15-minute stop, but it is great for some pictures and the opportunity to stretch your legs.

Other eccentric little towns on your way back to St. Ignace, like Brevort or the  Garlyn Zoo  in Naubinway, provide even more chances to sightsee while refilling the snack cooler and gas tank.

Coming up on St. Ignace along US-2 will give you a view of the Bridge, signaling the end of your UP road trip adventure. Hopefully, by this time you’ll look back fondly on the UP’s striking features, its rich history, and its friendly faces.

Rugged and isolated, with hardwood forests blanketing 90% of its land, the Upper Peninsula (UP) is a Midwest highlight. Only 45 miles of interstate highway slice through the trees, punctuated by a handful of cities, of which Marquette is the largest. Between the small towns lie miles of undeveloped shoreline on Lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior; scenic two-lane roads; and pasties, the local meat-and-vegetable pot pies brought over by Cornish miners 150 years ago.

Pull into one of our sleepy little towns and ask somebody for directions. Maybe you’ll see your route traced on the work-hardened palm of an iron miner or lumberman. Deep, calloused creases lead to a favorite fishing spot along a cedar-shaded trout stream.

From there, hike the highlands and top out on ancient peaks for panoramic views across the rolling spines of a Midwest mountain range. Soak up the sun on a warm slab of bedrock where glaciers met their match eons ago. Plunge back into the deep woods on a mountain bike, following miles of trails ranging from single track to city pathways.

Maybe you’ll get directions from the blueberry stained fingers of a giddy suntanned child whose family is picking berries along a quiet backroad. Many such paths wind through our pinestudded plains where the rich, acidic soil sprouts sweet fern and the tangy azure wild fruit that has sustained our residents for generations.

Take a left at the next two-track road, and follow it to a secret, sandy beach on a silent spring-fed pond. Shed your stress, slip into the refreshing depths, and follow the cleansing waters downstream, over riffles and cascades to one of the three Great Lakes that caress the U.P. coasts.

Savor water so clean it’s as if you were the first to witness its power and purity. Hang around until dusk and watch the waves quench even the sun’s fiery thirst, as it sinks in a deepening afterglow, and you’re left with the promise of another perfect U.P. tomorrow.

Grab a booth at a local diner and inquire about where to, and you may get directions on hands as smooth as the marble countertops where homemade candies cool. Or they could be soft and dusted with flour from decades of rolling out the pastry crusts of our most famous food, the  pasty —a hearty meat pie with a history dating back to Cornish mining families.

Whatever hands greet you at meal time, they’re sure to point the way to a variety of tidy  lodging options , from converted lighthouses and  historic B&Bs  to affordable sportsman’s cabins, family  resorts  and convenient national franchises.

Though our untamed landscape is irresistible, look closer and you’ll find manmade paradises too, like our excellent golf courses and ski resorts hewn from the land, but in harmony with their surroundings.

Looking for a good museum, or a little shopping? Dessert and an outdoor concert, perhaps? Then continue down this fairway, dogleg right, past the headwall and through the terrain park to one of our upscale downtowns for a night out. Satisfy yourself with old-fashioned comfort cuisine, healthy locally grown produce at a farmers market or just grab some thimbleberry jam, maple syrup and fudge for a feast back home.

You’ll have to excuse us if we just hold up our mittens in winter. The crisp air and bountiful snow have taught us to keep them on, even while showing folks around. Trace a line along the seam of a deer-skin glove and imagine the endless ice fishing lakes, skating rinks, ski trails and snowmobile routes. Winter isn’t a time of rest in the U.P., and you’re just as likely to be out having fun in a lake-effect snowstorm as kicking back on a beach in summer.

Snowshoe to a remote cabin, sip cocoa by a blazing fire and give thanks for the snow that covers your tracks. Tomorrow you’ll make new ones through a silent, shrouded woods to a frozen waterfall where you can get your first chance at the sport of ice climbing. Hop aboard a dogsled and hold on tight for a midnight tour under a full moon. Feel your adrenaline spike as ski jumpers sail through the air at an international tournament.

Wherever you go in the Upper Peninsula, and whatever season, you can be sure there’ll be hands to guide you and open arms to greet you. Welcome Michigan’s Upper Peninsula!

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do

by Meghan Klave Filed Under: things to do

Bucket lists are very personal that require a lot of thought. The point is to experience something fully. Reach beyond your comfort zone and go for it! I’ve created this bucket list, with much care, focusing on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

*this post contains affiliate links, which means I may be compensated by sales with no additional cost to you whatsoever*

Not all of the items are appropriate for everyone. It’s certainly not “one size fits all.” And to be completely honest I’m not even certain I’ll be able to complete all 50. But I promise to try, since the whole purpose is to push yourself physically and mentally.

I feel like the older I get the less adventurous I become. Why? I think, like many people, we get comfortable in the routines of life. We choose the things that come easy because we’ve already done them…it’s always easier next time. I’m done living within my bubble!

My friends are sometimes subject to my rantings and speeches about being sick of simply existing . I want to EXPERIENCE! The conclusion that I live where others vacation recently came to me and I realized just how much beauty rests right here in my own backyard.

What are we waiting for people?!

It’s not like I have to travel great distances, hopping flights and packing for a huge endeavor. Yes, the Upper Peninsula is rather large but everything is within driving distance for me. Why not figure out a way to bring it all to you ?

I understand that there are people who may read this that likely do not live here, or even close by, but I’d encourage you to consider Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for your next big adventure. There are some pretty incredible things here. Things I didn’t even realize existed until starting the research on this project.

Are you in for an adventure?

Here’s to the part of this great state that you might’ve forgotten about!

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List

#1 view the northern lights.

Most people have seen the spectacular photos but have you ever experienced the Aurora Borealis for yourself? Some of the best views can be found in dark sky areas along Lake Superior and I’ve recently learned that there’s an app for that !

#2 Visit some Ice Caves

Photo by habibi photography via things to do in the u.p..

I will admittedly say I’m not a fan of winter…I know, weird since I live way up here but I’m trying to learn to love it. Experiencing some of the most amazing views the cold has to offer is exactly what the soul needs to become a believer that the icy season is totally worth it. I’m actually looking forward to bringing out those snowshoes I’ve had hiding away in my closet for the last 3 years. The most well known are the Eben and Grand Island ice caves.

#3 Visit Mackinac Island

day-trips-on-mackinac-island. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

#4 Wader fishing

There are so many things on this list that take you near water…we are surrounded by it here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula so may I suggest you get yourself an affordable, waterproof, durable camera . I will also tell you that a decent pair of waders is a must! Whether fishing in a river or one of our great lakes, it’s incredible even if you aren’t catching anything.

Homemade Michigan map cutting board. Made in Michigan

#5 See the Soo Locks, Sault Ste Marie

So I’ve been told it’s a sight to see and I’ve heard it’s dripping with history. Some massive and genius engineering can be witnessed while allowing the passage of 1,000 ft freighters that carry some 72,000 tons of cargo. See the new observation deck and pretty park nearby that’s perfect for a picnic.

#6 Climb Castle Rock, St. Ignace

I’ve actually done this one before but I was so terrified and paralyzed with my fear of heights that I couldn’t get a grip and enjoy the view. My goal this time? Conquer that fear, look around and take in those fall colors – cause I’m thinking that could be the best time to go. Spectacular! Also, let’s keep in mind that there are much scarier things on this list, this is simply a warm up.

#7 Take a Pictured Rocks kayak tour, Munising

Pictured Rocks Kayaking into the arch

If you live in Michigan and are on Facebook …ok who’s not a Facebook yet? I’m certain you’ve seen someone share a photo or have scrolled passed a promoted post for one of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula most notable and recognizable features, Pictured Rocks of Munising. And I’m here to tell ya there’s no better way to see one of natures best master pieces.

#8 The Deer Ranch, St. Ignace

This little gem is located just west of the Mackinac Bridge on U.S. 2. Seems to me that the best time to go may be in the spring when the new fawns are being bottle fed.

#9 Oswald’s Bear Ranch, Newberry

The Upper Peninsula is home to 90 percent of Michigan’s entire population of black bears and Oswald’s is the largest, bear only, ranch in the U.S. Starting as a sanctuary for orphaned cubs it has continued to grow each year.

#10 Garlyn Zoo, Naubinway

Nature path via garlyn zoo.

Don’t expect to see zebra and elephants but this little zoo has a great setting tucked among the pines with wooded trails. Home to some of the Upper Peninsula’s native creatures and others including exotics like tigers, lemur and camel.

#11 Do the Mighty Mac Bridge Walk

Every year on Labor Day thousands of people come together to walk the Mackinac Bridge . It used to be the only time one could travel on foot to experience this grand beauty in such a way. They now have the tractor parade, fall bridge race and an ORV drive, among others!

#12 Snowmobile the Mackinac Island ice bridge

This has just fascinated me ever since I learned that it existed. The ice bridge is formed between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. It doesn’t form every year because, as you can imagine, the conditions have to be just right. If you’re in the area and happen to be riding a snowmobile on one of those “right conditions” kind of day, then perhaps you’ll follow the ice bridge and experience Mackinac Island during the winter. *This is at your own risk! Please use common sense! This writer and blog/website takes no responsibility for any loss, injury or incident…whatsoever.

#13 Hike Tahquamenon Falls

Photo credit: great lakes waterfalls & beyond.

Approximately 4.5 miles, this hike is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. With Tahquamenon Falls only about 30 minutes from Twin Cedars Resort , I’m not exactly sure what I’m waiting for! Spring will be popping with new life, summer would be luscious, fall simply gorgeous and winter would be a wonderland. Must do! And I just bought these hiking shoes for the adventure:)

#14 Cut River Bridge

A quick stop along your journey on U.S. 2 northwest of St. Ignace. Don’t miss the wooden staircase leading to the river below. A little treasure that many of the passing cars are clueless to.

#15 North Country Trail’s Niagara Escarpment near Trout Lake

Hike, snowshoe or cross country ski. Connect with nature within 5 minutes from here .

#16 Kayak around Mackinac Island

Photo via mackinac kayak.

Yes, the island ends up on this list in several places, but it’s just so darn gorgeous that I can’t help myself! There are many ways to see it but this seems rather unique and sounds pretty special. There is a tour you can do that I found by simply searching on Trip Advisor and I would highly recommend these essentials for any Michigan kayaking adventure!

#17 Zip-lining at the Mystery Spot, St. Ignace

I probably should’ve been here by now. The Mystery Spot will be a mystery until I visit and I’m not sure what it’s all about…mystery? I’m not sure if the zip-line is worth it and I can’t say it’s something to write home about but I’ll be certain to let you all know when I finally just do the thing. I will admit, however, that my fear of heights is already kicking in.

#18 Miner’s Falls, Munising

miners-falls. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Miners Falls photo via Thrillist

If you’re a Michigander you can just feel the natural draw you have to water. Any kind of water. Which is good since we’re surrounded by it and since it’s said that if you’re in Michigan then you can’t be any more than 2 miles away from a body of it in any given direction. There are many waterfalls dotted all over the Upper Peninsula and all over this list.

#19 Kitch-Iti-Kipi (The Big Spring), Manistique

One I’ve already done in my past, long before this blog was ever dreamed up, which means I must return! It’s totally worth it and can be a quick stop along the journey. Yes, there are massive fish that you can see from 60 feet above but don’t even dream of bringing your fishing pole!

#20 Hike Escarpment trail at Porcupine Mtns, Lake of the Clouds

Lake of the Clouds Upper Peninsula. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Escarpment Trail Lake of the Clouds via My Michigan Trips

Said to be one of the most scenic short hikes in all of Michigan. With a name like “Lake of the Clouds” it has to be stunning! The trail is about 4 miles, with loose rocks and roots – hoping these will come in handy .

#21 Visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Paradise

Lake Superior is considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and is the world’s third-largest freshwater lake by volume and the largest by volume in North America. One must understand the danger this great lake carries. I mean when there’s a famous song about a ship wreck on this massive body of water you have to think how important the history is . Just visit the museum you won’t regret it!

travel to michigan upper peninsula

#22 Chapel Falls hike, Grand Marais

Another falls…but it’s near Grand Marais, which apparently is an incredible stop along the Lake Superior shoreline and I was shocked to learn how close it is . There are many falls in this area, want to do them all ?

#23 Jump off the Pier, Grand Marais

I’ve lived in several areas that have lighthouse piers and never once have I had the guts to jump. Many michiganders know the feeling of a summertime pier jump, guess we better get on the bandwagon!

#24 Sip and Sail Sunset Cruise from Mackinac Island

Photo via mackinawcity.com.

This just sounds fun and beautiful. Imagine a glass of wine (or sip of your choice), the incredible backdrop of Mackinac Island and her sister bridge with a sunset topping it all off. Take an Arnold Transit Co. boat from Mackinac Island for this sweet summer, or fall, ending to your day. *Update* Arnold Ferries were sold to Star Line Ferry Company during the fall/winter season 2016. It appears Star Line will continue sunset cruises and include fireworks cruises every Saturday from July through September.

#25 Point Iroquois Light Station

Although it’s no longer an active lighthouse the history and views make it worthy of a stop. Explore the house, traverse the wooden staircase down the bluff then take in the shoreline of Lake Superior.

#26 Whitewater raft Piers Gorge

A rough section of the Menominee River located near Iron Mountain. For some reason I always thought I’d have to travel to some river in an eastern state to get to experience the thrill of whitewater rafting. Welp, it’s right here folks!

#27 Climb the Pine Mt Ski Jump, Iron Mt.

pine-mountain-ski-jump-view-from-the-top. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

View from the top by Things to do in the U.P.

Those who fear heights will be challenged with this one! Known as one of the tallest man-made ski jumps in the world, it hosts one epic event spread over a weekend in February with tailgating and nearly 20,000 spectators. A fantastic thing to witness but if you’re interested in the views, go for a climb yourself during warmer months and behold the beauty. *Update – I was recently told that climbing the ski jump is illegal…bummer, if true, but I’ve left it on this list for now until I know for sure.

#28 Eat a 5 course meal at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island

With all this adventure I’m craving a bit of fancy.

#29 Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary, Copper Harbor

estivant-pines. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Estivant Pines photo by Superior Spirit

The enormity of the pines here have to be seen up close and personal. Many of the trees are 600 years old and this sanctuary is among the last of Michigan’s old growth white pines.

#30 Sunset/Full Moon Kayak Tour, Hessel

If you can plan it just right a sunset view with the rising full moon would be a great experience. I can just picture the sparkling moonlit water and the sounds of nature. Ahhh…

#31 Lakenenland Sculpture Park, Marquette

A free park open 7 days a week with sculptures made out of scrap iron. Tom Lakenen, an iron worker with a calling to make art moved his pieces to this 37 acre property after his hometown made him remove them from his lawn. Possibly a good move all around…his neighbors are happy and so are the visitors that can enjoy the whimsy-ness .

#32 Visit Isle Royale

Isle Royal Upper Peninsula, MI

Isle Royale via NPS.gov

This national park is touted as “the edge of wilderness.” The park is open from May – October because of the harsh weather during the rest of the year and you must obtain a special permit to explore the island. Certainly an adventure I’ll use a guide for. This is one of the scarier Upper Peninsula destinations for me. Can’t wait!

#33 Sail on Lake Superior

Sailing has always sparked some curiosity in me. Those big wooden vessels, out on the open sea with wind guiding your path – just sounds magical!

#34 Take a U.P. Wine Tour

Just to name a few…Leigh’s Garden Winery of Escanaba,  End of the Road Winery in Germfask and Northern Sun Winery located in Bark River. Currently there are around 8 or 9 wineries in the Upper Peninsula and since I love wine so much I’ll be making my way around, then sharing it with you.

drink-local-ad

#35 Taste U.P. Craft Beer

Michigan is known for it’s craft beer so if you’re not too hungover from your wine tour make your way around for the beer of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Breweries stretch from east to west with several in-between. I’d love to visit all of them but if you’d like to get a taste of all of them in one spot try out the Annual U.P. Fall Beer Festival in Marquette .

#36 Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Escanaba

We’ve talked about getting paddle boards here at Twin Cedars Resort and I’m looking forward to that. But experiencing it along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Escanaba, on a bright sun shiny day, makes me think I’d never even realize the great workout to be had while having so much fun.

#37 Attend the U.P. State Fair, Escanaba

Escanaba again? Yep! Who knew the Upper Peninsula had it’s very own state fair? See, I told you the U.P. was like it’s own separate state. Plan your trip for August!

#38 U.P. Lake Michigan Beaches

lake-michigan-upper-peninsula. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Miles of sandy shoreline and sparkling waters, Lake Michigan tends to be a bit warmer if you’re into taking a dip, than Lake Superior is. Remember these are very large bodies of water with strong currents, be careful and enjoy the beach!

#39 Laughing Whitefish Falls

It’s possible that I’ll just take a full weekend and do a falls tour around the Upper Peninsula. Oh all the beautifulness…

#40 Karst Cave Tour, Trout Lake

Holy crap this really is in my backyard! When I asked Bob about this one he didn’t seem fazed. I say something like, “did you know there are caves right here in Trout Lake?” And he says, “yeah at the Fiborn rock quarry.” And I say, “how come I didn’t know and how come you never took me there?” He says, “I looked for them once but couldn’t find them.” So I found a tour company because I’m thinking you shouldn’t do this one alone.

#41 Drummond Island Cliff Overlook Hike

Drummond island cliff via u.p. ecotours.

This island has been on my list for a long time. I can’t be sure all that’s there so I figure I’ll plan this trip then report on any other cool things to see while visiting.

#42 Watch a meteor shower in the dark sky at Twin Cedars Resort

The wonder of a shooting star…Get a guide to all the happenings beyond our atmosphere here to know the best times to star gaze.

#43 Underground Mine Tour, Greenland

Several different types of tours to choose from. I’m thinking of going with the one that has us propelling down a mine shaft…there goes my heights fear again…and enclosed places if that’s an issue for you. Hey go big or go home right? That’s actually not necessary through Adventure Mine Tours , but they don’t call it adventure for nothin!

Michigan Map wrap bracelet

#44 Hungarian Falls

Since you’ll be on that side of the state anyway…behold the beauty!

#45 Glass Bottom Shipwreck Boat Tour, Munising

The history of shipwrecks on Lake Superior is part of the culture up here, see them where they continue to rest. And with the Pictured Rocks National lake shore in the background you’ll always have something fantastic to look at. This one’s like 2 in 1. Hmmm…sounds good!

#46 Agawa Canyon Tour Train

agawa-train-tour

Agawa Canyon Tour photo via Algoma Country.com

Canadian, yes, but you still have to go through the Upper Peninsula to get there and you’ll get some unforgettable views. Taking a train seems so timeless, something I’ve always wanted to do. My husband says he’s done this tour before, I’m thinking it’s high time he take me on a little excursion. *Update: WE DID IT!

#47 Thomas Rock Scenic Overlook, Big Bay Marquette

A short, easy nature trail with signs identifying the natural growth and wildlife. Education and adventure – right up my alley!

#48 Mt. Baldy

mount-baldy. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Climb at Mt. Baldy via SummitPost.org

Also known as Mt. Lookout, an approximate 3 mile gradual incline hike that is so worth it!

#49 Take a plane to Mackinac Island

Little planes to a little island. Sounds scary to me but I have friends that do this all the time. Thinking the aerial view would be pretty fantastic too!

#50 Jump off the rocks and swim at Devil’s Washtub, Copper Harbor

I’m not one who would generally jump into dark waters that I’m unfamiliar with, so of course I had to add this to the list since it’s all about overcoming fears and just “doing the thing.”

There’s a lot of adventure to be had, thanks for coming along! Feeling generous? Share your own U.P. adventures using #miupbucketlist on Instagram , Facebook or Twitter so we can see!

While visiting Whitefish Point, you will see:

  • See the Whitefish Point Light Tower, in continuous operation for 155 years, the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior (and maybe climb it depending on the weather and availability)
  • Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum with shipwreck memorabilia including the Edmond Fitzgerald's bell.
  • 1861 Lightkeeper’s Quarters & Exhibits
  • Guided tour of 1923 Surfboat House & Exhibits

Kitch-iti-kipi is Breathtaking!

Kitch-iti-kipi

Friends, if you are only going to do one thing this summer, GO TO KITCH-ITI-KIPI!  We were blown away by its beauty!

What is it?   Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan's largest natural spring that is crystal clear and full of fish!

The spring delivers 16,000 gallons per minute! HOLY MOLY!

Hop aboard the raft that will take you across the bubbling emerald green springs.  I love the middle viewing area as the water is so crystal clear! It offers a great view of the fish and the magical bubbling springs. The raft has a roof so you are able to see the fish very clearly without the glare from the sun.

Top Attractions in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula draws travelers who love adventure, history and nature.

Midwest Living's experienced editors create best-in-class travel, lifestyle, food, home and garden content you won't find anywhere else. We're loudly, proudly Midwestern, and we're passionate about helping our audience explore and create through award-winning storytelling.

Jason Lindsey

Bounded on three sides by Great Lakes, Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP) is a natural for water-related activities. However, forests, cliffs and mountains beckon, too.

Laze away warm summer days on lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan. Along the water you'll find grassy spots, sandy dunes and rocky outcroppings. Inland there are waterfalls and glacial lakes. If you crave more activity, find shipwrecks, explore lighthouses, hit some golf balls. Hikers venture through old-growth forests, over peaks and along rivers tumbling to the Great Lakes.

Winter has its own beauty—and activities such as snowmobiling, ice fishing and skiing— with three digits worth of snowfall. Spring is bright with wildflowers. Fall stuns with foliage. No matter when or where you go, striking scenery awaits.

But the UP isn't only about the great outdoors. Marquette and the UP's smaller towns, such as Sault Ste. Marie, Houghton and Hancock charm with attractions. Here are some of our favorite things to do in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Climb a Lighthouse

Standing guard over treacherous waters, 40 lighthouses dot the UP, including 12 open to the public. Among our favorites:

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and Museum Period furnishings decorate this 1871 redbrick Keweenaw Peninsula light . Also explore maritime, Keweenaw history and commercial fishing museums on the grounds.

Peninsula Point Built of Cream City brick, the square tower attracts butterfly-watchers in the fall. Peninsula Point is located in Hiawatha National Forest at the southern tip of the Stonington Peninsula between Bays de Noc.

Point Iroquois Lighthouse Resting on a bluff overlooking the lake and Whitefish Bay, this lighthouse is also part of Hiawatha National Forest. Visitors can climb the 72 steps to the lantern deck or take a wooden walkway to the beach.

Dig into History

Much of the history of the area revolves around mining. Learn about the boom and decline at these sites and others.

Keweenaw National Historical Park Sites related to the Upper Peninsula copper mining boom days, like the Quincy Mine in Hancock, scatter across the Keweenaw Peninsula as part of this historical park.

Fayette Historic State Park On the south shore of the Upper Peninsula, explore eerie remains of an iron-smelting town . Camping and recreation also available, near Fayette.

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park Costumed interpreters re-create life at this restored 1844 military outpost and one of the first lighthouses on Lake Superior near Copper Harbor. Camping and day-use facilities available.

Explore Shipping

Shipping is a major industry on the Great Lakes. Watch the freighters inch their way through locks, or learn about those that never made it to dock.

Soo Locks Park and Visitors Center Boats lock through and cruise the busy international harbor in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan's oldest city. Viewing platforms at the Soo Locks Visitors Center provide vantage points for watching ships navigate the 21-foot drop between Superior and Huron lakes.

Museum Ship Valley Camp In Sault Ste. Marie, this museum is more than a tour of a ship deck. The cargo holds include 100-plus exhibits and aquariums.

Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum The Whitefish Point Light station houses accounts of shipwrecks, artifacts (the bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald ), restored keeper's quarters and more.

Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse The museum space at Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse is small, but the lighthouse tour is a great way to get a glimpse of what a keeper's life was like.

Portage Lake Lift Bridge The widest and heaviest double-decker vertical lift bridge in the world raises its deck for traffic on the Portage Canal in Houghton.

Take a Hike

Aaron Peterson

Get up close to the wonders of this region while hiking some of the many trails.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Michigan's largest state park has 90 miles of trails leading to waterfalls, rustic campsites and mountain views. Near White Pine, the park's paths lead along Presque Isle River, up to Summit Peak and an overlook of Lake of the Clouds, and past evidence of copper mines.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park The region's largest waterfall stars at this park 73 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie . A variety of loop trails wind past both the Upper Falls and Lower Falls, as well as other wilderness features in the park. Stop at Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub near the park entrance before or after your visit.

Escape to an Island

Camping, hiking, biking, fishing and relaxing are plentiful on these northern islands. Ferries shuttle visitors from nearby cities.

Isle Royale National Park Unspoiled forests, wilderness lakes and rugged shoreline are the attractions at this remote group of islands , the least-visited of the national parks. Ferries from Houghton and Copper Harbor carry nature lovers to the 45-mile-long wilderness anchoring 454 islands. Stay at Rock Harbor Lodge near the dock, or make arrangements for camping.

Les Cheneaux Islands Towering forests and sheltered bays and channels dot these 36 islands. Families return each summer to simple cabin resorts in Hessel and Cedarville along Lake Huron.

Enjoy Shoreline Beauty

Miles of shoreline along Lake Superior as well as lakes and wetlands mean access to a wealth of beauty.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore The area encompasses sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lakes and forest, not to mention 40 miles of Lake Superior shoreline. Before exploring, get a map at the visitors center at the park's western gateway in Munsing.

Northern Waters Adventures This outfitter (based in Munising) leads kayak trips along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or Grand Island Recreational Area. Paddle through sea caves, under arches, over shipwrecks or past a lighthouse.

Seney National Wildlife Refuge The 150-square-mile mosaic of wetlands, bogs and forest draws 200 bird species. Explore by car, canoe, foot or bike.

Sylvania Wilderness Area Some 34 crystalline lakes hide behind a forest of century-old trees at the Sylvania Wilderness Area southwest of Watersmeet. Previously a private estate and now a federal wilderness area in the Ottawa National Forest, Sylvania has barely changed in more than 100 years. Fifteen miles of hiking trails and portages link the lakes.

Tour by Boat

See the sights in comfort by taking a boat tour.

Sault Ste. Marie Tours Choose from multiple tours —through the locks, past lighthouses, buffets, fireworks and more.

Munising Tours Pictured Rocks Cruises glide past cliffs and waterfalls. Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours show shipwrecks through glass viewing wells.

Explore the Towns

Small towns capture the charm and distill the history of the Upper Peninsula.

Marquette With a population of about 20,000, it's the largest town on the Upper Peninsula. Come for top-rated Presque Isle Beach, gawk at the huge Lower Harbor Ore Dock, and stay for an afternoon of eating and browsing along Washington Street. Read more about a getaway to Marquette.

Houghton and Hancock An enormous lift bridge and the towering Quincy Mine Hoist dominate the skylines of Houghton and Hancock on the Keweenaw Peninsula. The A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum on the campus of Michigan Tech is a visitor favorite.

Calumet and Copper Harbor On your way up the Keweenaw Peninsula, stop at the Calumet Theatre , one of a dozen 19th-century buildings in the historic copper mining town of Calmuet. In Copper Harbor, at the top of the peninsula, take the scenic Brockway Mountain Drive , which looks down on tour boats traveling to the 1866 Copper Harbor Lighthouse.

Sault Ste. Marie In this historic riverfront town, boat tours and maritime attractions fill a weekend. Find beaches, shipwreck lore and roaring waterfalls. Sault Historic Sites features a museum ship, Tower of History and River of History.

Plan a Romantic Getaway

If your idea of a romantic weekend is getting away from it all (but still being close to great restaurants and attractions), the UP delivers. The Vault hotel in Houghton takes inspiration from its former life as a bank; each floor personifies a different type of wealth—plus there's a speakeasy open only to hotel guests. The Big Bay Point Lighthouse, built in 1896, is one of the few operational lighthouses with a bed and breakfast. At the Landmark Inn in Marquette, book a lakeview king for sweeping views of Lake Superior and an in-room fireplace.

Try a Winter Adventure

Abundant snowfall makes the UP a winter paradise . Experiences await like dog-sledding at Nature's Kennel Sled Dog Racing and Adventures in McMillan, about 90 miles east of Marquette, and thousands of miles for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing all across the peninsula. State parks such as Tahquamenon Falls are a good place to start for winter trail adventure.

13 Beautiful Michigan Towns To Visit On Lake Superior

I f water sports are top of mind when you think of a fantastic summer vacation, Lake Superior and its beautiful Michigan lake towns are a great option. You’ll find plenty of shorelines, uncrowded quaint villages, and various other activities to meet the entire family’s needs.

The Ojibwe called Lake Superior gitche gumee , “the great sea.” Lake Superior lies directly north of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula; it’s the largest of the Great Lakes, with a surface area of 31,700 square miles. That also makes it the largest freshwater lake on the planet. The lake is 160 miles wide and about 350 miles long. That makes the area perfect for water sports like fishing, kayaking, swimming, and — although a bit cold — surfing.

With the entire population of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula at just over 314,000, the towns along Lake Superior’s coastline are relatively small, quaint, and uncrowded even during the summer. Starting from east to west, here are some of the towns you should plan to explore.

1.  Sault Saint Marie

Sault Saint Marie, affectionately referred to as the Soo, lies at the intersection of Lake Superior and Lake Huron, about 50 miles north of the Mackinac Bridge. One of the main attractions is the Soo Locks, an engineering marvel. While they have an observation tower where you can watch the boats pass through the locks, you can experience going through them on a boat tour . In addition to experiencing passage through the locks, the tour provides a narrative history. You’ll also see Sault Saint Marie, Ontario, Canada, from the water during the ride. The Sault Saint Marie International Bridge connects two cities of the same name in two different nations, the United States and Canada.

Open from early May through mid-October, the Tower of History , 210 feet above street level, provides panoramic views of the area and is well worth the journey to the top. Start on the ground floor, exploring the museum, which includes a video. Then, you can climb the 292 stairs to the top of the structure or ride the elevator to the 25-plus-story building. From the observation deck, you can see up to 1,200 square miles, from the Soo Locks and Sugar Island to the Canadian waterfront and the wilderness to the north.

The Museum Ship Valley Camp is a Great Lakes freighter that is more than just a tour of her deck. The ship’s massive cargo holds feature a 20,000-square-foot museum with over 100 exhibits, explaining the role of freighters on the Great Lakes. Aquarium enthusiasts will also enjoy the four 1,200-gallon aquariums featuring fish from the Great Lakes region.

Pro Tip: While the Tower of History has an elevator to the top, you’ll find steps to get inside and a few steps while you’re inside.

2. Paradise

Paradise sits on Whitefish Bay, 11 miles south of Whitefish Point. The hallmark of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is wildlife and waterfalls, and Tahquamenon Falls State Park features both. Tahquamenon Falls offers both Upper and Lower Falls, and the Upper Falls has a drop of almost 50 feet and a width of more than 200 feet. It’s one of the most significant falls east of the Mississippi. The Lower Falls are a string of five lesser waterfalls that cascade around an island. The Lower Falls are not as massive as the Upper Falls, but they are stunning. The water takes on colors that are a cross between copper and root beer, and the foam adds to the root beer feel.

When visiting the falls, don’t rely on your GPS. Maps are a must. The first view of the Lower Falls is 100 yards from the parking lot. To reach the next viewing platform, it’s a 10-minute walk. You’ll want to drive to the Upper Falls from the Lower Falls. For people who use wheelchairs, Tahquamenon’s track chair assists where standard wheelchairs may not work. You can reserve the chair by email, phone, or Facebook Messenger beforehand.

Pro Tip: Be sure to remember insect repellent when visiting Tahquamenon Falls.

3. Whitefish Point

This area on Lake Superior, known as the Shipwreck Coast, contains about 200 shipwrecks. To learn about their tragic stories, visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. The museum is located at Michigan’s Whitefish Point Light Station, about a 1.5-hour drive from the Mackinac Bridge.

The star attraction at Whitefish Point is the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum . The museum focuses on the region’s maritime history. One exciting artifact at the museum is the bell from the S.S. Edmond Fitzgerald , the namesake of the Gordon Lightfoot song “The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.”

Birdwatching is another popular activity. Whitefish Point acts as a migration corridor for birds and the area has a global Important Bird Area designation with over 340 recorded species of birds. The Whitefish Point Bird Observatory is an excellent place for birdwatching and photographing birds in flight. The piping plover is an endangered species and this is a great place to catch a glimpse of them from early to mid-summer.

Pro Tip: The observatory has an owl banding lab where you can meet the researchers and maybe see an owl. They are open Friday and Saturday nights from dusk to midnight during the banding season.

4. Grand Marais

Grand Marais is the eastern entrance to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore . Grand Marais is a quaint harbor town of only 350 people, so the miles of Lake Superior beaches provide an opportunity for solitude and serenity. With some of the darkest skies in the United States, the beach is an excellent place for stargazers to take out their telescopes. Rockhounds will want to head to Agate Beach, directly north of Main Street, to try to uncover those semi-precious agates.

Those who enjoy exploring lighthouses have a pair to photograph in the Grand Marais Harbor of Refuge Inner and Outer Lights, located on the west pier at the entrance to Grand Marais Harbor of Refuge. These lights are also on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pro Tip: While you’re in the area, you shouldn’t miss the stunning Kitchi-ti-kipi , Big Springs, located in Palms Book State Park.

5. Munising

Munising is the western gateway to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore . Located on Lake Superior’s south shore, it was the first of four national shorelines. The National Park Service operates the Pictured Rocks, where you’ll find vivid multi-colored limestone cliffs.

Pictured Rocks National Shoreline sits between Munising and Grand Marais, and you’ll find it to be an outdoor-lover’s heaven.

A Michigan Upper Peninsula food specialty is a pastie, and Muldoon’s Pasties and Gifts is a popular place to try one. The pastie is a hand-held Cornish meat pie made with ground beef, potatoes, carrots, onion, and rutabaga, all baked in a pie crust. Sometimes, they’re served on a plate and topped with gravy.

Pro Tip: One of the easiest ways to fully view the Pictured Rocks National Shoreline is through a boat tour, especially if you find hiking difficult. The boat tour is excellent for all activity levels. Pictured Rocks Cruises leave from the Munising City Dock, where the longest tours are two hours and 15 minutes and include Spray Falls, covering 32 miles roundtrip.

6. Marquette

Marquette is the largest city in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s a major port for shipping iron ore and home to Northern Michigan University, where you’ll find the DeVos Art Museum on the University’s campus. With over 1,500 items in its permanent collection, you’ll find art ranging from local and regional artists to Japanese art and artifacts.

Another museum worth a stop is the Marquette Regional History Center . It offers a permanent collection that includes interactive, immersive exhibits highlighting the history between man and the environment. The six hands-on exhibits include touch-screen kiosks featuring information on Lake Superior and the Native American Culture.

Stay at the Hampton Inn Marquette Waterfront on the Lake Superior shore. We enjoyed our breakfast and morning coffee on the deck overlooking Lake Superior. Even on cold mornings, the large windows allow for a beautiful view of the lake.

Pro Tip: In the summer, the Marquette Regional History Center offers 90-minute Historic Marquette Walking Tours, where you’ll meet historic characters in period dress who provide fun historical interpretations of local sites. Digital audio tours are available on their website.

Located about 45 minutes northwest of Marquette, Big Bay is a small town with attractive accommodations. Big Bay Point Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast offers an overnight lighthouse experience. While the Big Bay Lighthouse is an active navigation aid that the U.S. Coast Guard still monitors, you can still stay overnight here in the bed and breakfast.

Van Riper State Park in nearby Champion, Michigan, isn’t on Lake Superior, but rather Lake Michigamme, an inland lake. This state park creates a fun day trip from Big Bay, where you can spend the day picnicking and enjoying the sandy beach. Take a slow drive through the park’s northern area, and you might experience a moose encounter.

Pro Tip: Be aware that Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has two time zones. The Lake Superior coastline is in the Eastern time zone; however, some west near Wisconsin areas are on Central time. When making time-sensitive reservations, check which time zone the venue is following.

On U.S. Route 41 between L’Anse and Baraga, take time to see the giant copper sculpture rising over 60 feet above Keweenaw Bay. Nicknamed the Snowshoe Priest, Frederic Baraga left an upper-class European lifestyle in 1830 to open Catholic missions along the south shore of Lake Superior. The stunning statue pays homage to one of Keweenaw’s most loved pioneers.

Located east of Pequaming is Second Sand Beach, an ideal location for swimming, picnicking, and other day-use activities.

Pro Tip: Second Sand Beach offers a handicapped porta-potty, an accessible beach walkway, and van-accessible parking.

If you prefer camping to hotels, Baraga State Park , located on Lake Superior’s Keweenaw Bay, makes a good base camp for exploring the western part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The park offers a 0.75-mile nature trail for hiking, kayaking, and ORV-friendly activities.

Pro Tip: Baraga State Park is one of few state parks allowing off-road vehicles between the campground and the nearby ORV trails.

10. Copper Harbor

Located on the northernmost point of the Keweenaw Peninsula, Copper Harbor got its name from its mining history. For stunning views of Lake Superior up to 1,300 feet above sea level, the Brockway Mountain Drive takes you 9 miles along a picturesque drive.

History buffs will enjoy Copper Harbor’s 700-acre Fort Wilkins Historic State Park. The park offers an 1844 U.S. Army Outpost and an 1866 Copper Harbor Lighthouse, one of the first lighthouses on Lake Superior.

Located about 1 mile south of Copper Harbor, spring is the best time to view the 45-foot-tall Manganese Falls. The falls are often non-existent in the summer months.

Pro Tip: Under the right weather conditions, you can view the northern lights from Copper Harbor.

11. Calumet

Located along Route 41, Calumet dates back to 1875 and has a rich mining history. Start your tour of the region by stopping in at the visitor center . The Keweenaw National Historical Park tells the story of the entire Keweenaw Peninsula, with sites throughout the area.

The Calumet Theater began as an opera house in the late 1800s. In the early 1900s, the theater featured Broadway productions. Over the years, as Calument’s economy declined, the theater primarily was for movies. Today, it still has events and musical entertainment. History buffs will enjoy a tour of this stunning theater.

Pro Tip: The Visitor Center is open year-round from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and has two floors of interactive exhibits about Calumet and its connection to the mining and copper industries.

12. Houghton

Situated on Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Houghton is the largest city in the Copper Country region. Houghton is a fun town to visit if you’re interested in geology. The A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum includes three mineral collections: the A.E. Seaman Mineral Collection, the University of Michigan’s collection, and the Great Lakes collection. Houghton, one gateway to Isle Royale National Park, but a true hidden gem), provides ferries and seaplanes to transport you to the island.

Pro Tip: During the summer months, May through September is the best time to visit. In winter, the area measures snow in feet rather than inches, and some activities like access to Isle Royale National Park are seasonal.

13. Ontonagon

Michigan’s largest and arguably most beautiful state park is the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park . If you love the great outdoors, you’ll want to spend some time here. We only had a day when we visited, which wasn’t enough to explore the vast area.

For more information on exploring the area, check out How To Spend A Perfect Long Weekend In Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains .

Pro Tip: Be sure to pack snacks or even a picnic lunch, as we found it challenging to find restaurants available when and where we needed them.

10 fun, quirky and kitschy amusement parks in Michigan

travel to michigan upper peninsula

Amusement parks come in all shapes and sizes: Some have massive, towering rides and waterslides. Some are charming roadside attractions reminiscent of another era.

From giant dinosaurs to leaning fun houses, Michigan is chock full of quirky and kitschy amusements for families and first dates. The Detroit Free Press compiled a list of amusement parks across the state, from the extravagant to the endearing to the puzzling:

1. Michigan's Adventure, Muskegon

Claiming to be the state's largest amusement park , Michigan's Adventure is on the west side of the state in Muskegon. The park includes rides aimed for children, as well as more adventurous thrills, like the Corkscrew roller coaster. Thrill-seekers can also head over to the attached waterpark, WildWater Adventure, with curving waterslides, a wave pool and a jet-black slide called the "Snake Pit."

Daily tickets in 2024 start at $42.99, with options for deals to add meals.

2. Arzo Sports and Fun Park, Alpena

In northern Michigan on the Lake Huron side of the state, revelers at Arzo Amusement Park will find go-karts, bumper cars, an old-timey carousel and more. The humble amusement park is open seasonally, from around May through the end of September, according to its Facebook page.

Attractions are priced per ride, but Arzo is advertising $30 for five rides.

3. Nelis' Dutch Village, Holland

Dutch Village is a Netherlands-themed park in Holland, decked out with a giant wooden slide in the shape of a Dutch wooden clog, according to the park's website . Other rides include a tractor drive around a tulip farm, a 1940s-era Ferris wheel, a petting farm and a pirate-themed water balloon launcher ride.

Tickets online are $16 for ages 3 and up. Infants under the age of 2 are admitted free.

4. Dinosaur Gardens, Ossineke

Another northern Michigan attraction, Dinosaur Gardens, offers a "thrilling explorative adventure," where the main attraction is a walk through the park to view massive dinosaur figures scattered throughout. The park dates to the 1930s, when an artist bought the property and built rental cabins as well as a gas station and art studio, according to Dinosaur Gardens' website . The artist built the dinosaurs, a labor that took him years to complete.

A walk-through of the park costs $10, though children under 2 can walk through for free with their parents. It costs additional money to play putt-putt golf and partake in a fossil dig experience.

5. Wild Frontier Fun Park, Comins

In the north central part of the state, the Wild Frontier Fun Park promises restored vintage rides, including a technicolor Tilt-a-Whirl, a kiddie coaster and bumper cars. The park is across the street from the Cedar Valley Golf Club, for adults looking to play a few holes, and offers an RV park for those who want to stay overnight.

A wristband for unlimited rides costs $35, while individual tickets are $3.50.

6. C.J. Barrymore's, Clinton Township

Located in metro Detroit in Macomb County, C.J. Barrymore's differentiates itself from many amusement parks by staying open into the night, until 11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Inside, revelers can enjoy a decked-out arcade, bowling, laser tag and more. Outside, the park boasts multiple go-kart tracks, a drop tower, a roller coaster, a zipline and more activities to keep kids and adults occupied.

Unlimited ride wristbands cost $49.

7. Glenlore Trails, Commerce Township

Nestled in Commerce Township in metro Detroit, Glenlore Trails is another evening amusement option. The park's website calls the experience offered an "immersive night walk," with several different experiences for spectators to enjoy. What's advertised as the Haunted Forest, for example, shows spooky lit trees and a giant pumpkin projection.

The attraction appears to be open seasonally, and tickets range from $15 to $25.

8. Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark, Boyne Falls

Avalanche Bay is in the Boyne Mountain Resort in northern Michigan . The indoor waterpark offers slides, a surf simulator, and a lazy river.

Day passes start at $36 for juniors and $44 for adults.

9. LegoLand Discovery Center, Auburn Hills

Another option in metro Detroit, LegoLand Discovery is indoors and is one of 13 LegoLand Discovery Centers in the United States. Rides include an "enchanted cart," a 4D theater, and a play zone for little ones to build their own creations with the famous block. The center occasionally holds adult nights, with themes and activities for those ages 18 and above.

Tickets start at $19.99.

10. Mystery Spot, St. Ignace

Another kitschy amusement option, the Mystery Spot is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The park offers guided tours and a zipline, according to its website. As legend has it , as detailed on the spot's website, surveying equipment in the 1950s wasn't functional on the land where the Mystery Spot is located. The spot has since become a roadside attraction, with a tilted structure to explore, a zipline, mini golf and a maze.

Guided tours start at $7, while zipline admission is $20 for all ages over 5.

More nickel in the usa: talon metals commences drilling in michigan's upper peninsula.

Historic Drilling Suggests Many Targets for High-Grade Nickel and Copper Near the Only Producing Nickel Mine in the USA

Tamarack, Minnesota--(Newsfile Corp. - June 18, 2024) - Talon Metals Corp. (TSX:TLO) (OTC Pink: TLOFF) ( "Talon" or the "Company" ) announces that it has begun mineral exploration drilling in the Upper Peninsula of the State of Michigan, fulfilling one of the key initiatives of its 2024 exploration plan .

In 2022, Talon entered into an option and earn-in agreement (the UPX Option Agreement ") with UPX Minerals Inc. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sweetwater Royalties) (" UPX ") to acquire up to an 80% ownership interest in the mineral rights over a land package comprised of approximately 400,000 acres located in the Upper Peninsula of the State of Michigan. The Company also has rights to explore certain other properties in Michigan that are not subject to the UPX Option Agreement, including approximately 23,000 acres of State mineral leases (collectively, the " Talon Michigan Nickel-Copper Properties ").

Drilling commenced in Michigan and Ongoing in Minnesota: Talon has mobilized an in-house exploration team of geologists, geophysicists, and drill crew to the Talon Michigan Nickel-Copper Properties, complementing ongoing exploration at the Tamarack Nickel Project in Minnesota. One drill rig is now active in Michigan.

Strategic Location: Talon's land package in Michigan is located within 1.7 miles (2.8 km) of the high-grade Eagle Nickel Mine, the only active nickel mine in the USA, and just 0.4 miles (0.6 km) from the Humboldt Mill.

Initial Geophysics Completed and Drilling Started at the Roland Target: In May 2024, ahead of schedule, Talon commenced geophysical surveys at three high priority targets. Following this initial geophysical work, Talon has now commenced exploration drilling at the Roland Target (see Figures 1 and 2).

High-Grade Potential : Talon will be following up on historic drilling of over 80 holes across the Talon Michigan Nickel-Copper Properties, that resulted in grades similar to the high-grade Eagle Mine and the Tamarack Nickel Project.

Nearly 50% funded by the US Department of Defense (DOD): In September 2023 , Talon and the US Department of Defense announced that the US Department of Defense would provide US$20.6-million for accelerated exploration in Minnesota and Michigan, nearly doubling Talon's exploration budget. Nearly 50% of the costs Talon is incurring in Michigan will be refunded by the Department of Defense.

Community and Tribal Engagement: Talon is committed to engagement, transparency and information sharing with the local communities where the Company operates and with proximate tribal sovereign governments. Talon has kicked off quarterly community meetings in the region where the Company is exploring in Michigan, hired a local Community and Tribal Engagement Liaison (Cody Mayer) and initiated information sharing with the proximate tribal sovereign government. Talon believes that the process of conducting mineral exploration is fundamentally a process of understanding what resources may be in the ground.

Brian Goldner, COO and Chief Exploration Officer of Talon, commented on the exploration in Michigan: "Our team in Michigan is excited to have kicked off our first exploration drill program in Michigan, home to America's only currently operating nickel mine. Our strategy is to leverage both the historic data from the Talon Michigan Nickel-Copper Properties and the new insights we've gathered from our extensive exploration around the Tamarack Nickel Project and other projects in the region. By integrating this wealth of knowledge with our new exploration model, we are confident in our ability to unlock the high-grade nickel potential of the Talon Michigan Nickel-Copper Properties. Our team's proven expertise and innovative approach will be instrumental in driving the success of this exploration program."

Talon's Community and Tribal Engagement Liaison Cody Mayer commented: "Information is power. Knowing what valuable resources are in the ground empowers society to decide in the future if those resources, that society needs for clean energy, defense related manufacturing and everyday products, should be extracted. But the first step is knowing what is in the ground. Talon is committed to doing this exploration responsibly, sharing the information we obtain with the public and state, federal and tribal sovereign government officials. We are excited to have started."

Drill Rig Mobilization at Roland Target: Historical Target with New Potential

Historical drilling at the Talon Michigan Nickel-Copper Properties was successful in intersecting high-grade nickel mineralization; however the Roland Target and other known target areas were never followed-up on after the discovery of the Eagle East high-grade nickel mineralization at the Eagle Mine. This Eagle East discovery changed the understanding of what controls the nickel-copper mineralization within the Michigan Upper Peninsula geology and provides Talon with a new exciting thesis for discovery.

Talon's drilling program has commenced at the Roland Target, leveraging both significant historical data from previous exploration and the new model from the Eagle East discovery.

UPX Option Agreement

In 2022, Talon entered into the UPX Option Agreement with UPX (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sweetwater Royalties) to acquire up to an 80% ownership interest in the mineral rights over a land package comprised of approximately 400,000 acres located in the Upper Peninsula of the State of Michigan. Talon has the right to acquire up to an 80% ownership interest in these properties from UPX. Talon will earn a 51% undivided interest upon completing 25,000 meters of drilling by August 2027. Subsequently, Talon can earn an additional 29% interest by delivering a Feasibility Study prepared in accordance with National Instrument 43-101 within eight years. See the 2022 press release for more details on the UPX Option Agreement.

Additional Michigan Properties

On January 30, 2024, the Company received confirmation from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources that its Administrative Board approved Talon Michigan LLC's application for 23,000 acres of additional mineral leases in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (the "State Leases" ). The Company also has rights to explore certain other properties in Michigan that are not subject to the UPX Option Agreement.

Strategic Advantages of Dual Exploration Efforts in Michigan and Minnesota

As the Tamarack Nickel Project progresses its detailed engineering and permitting efforts, Talon's simultaneous exploration efforts in Michigan and Minnesota provide significant strategic advantages. This approach is made possible by Talon's robust in-house capabilities, including five dedicated drill rigs and specialized exploration and geophysics teams.

Maximizing Resource Potential: Exploring both regions allows Talon to uncover the full district potential of the Lake Superior region. By leveraging both historical data and new insights learned from the Tamarack Nickel Project, Talon can apply proven techniques on the Talon Michigan Nickel-Copper Properties, increasing the likelihood of discovering more high-grade nickel.

Operational Efficiencies: In-house drill rigs and expert technical teams enable Talon to efficiently conduct parallel exploration programs. This operational flexibility ensures continuous progress across multiple projects, minimizing downtime and accelerating the overall timeline for resource identification and development.

Diversification: Engaging in exploration across two different yet geologically similar regions helps Talon spread its exploration risk. Further success in either location can significantly boost Talon's resource base, providing multiple pathways to secure the supply chain for critical battery minerals.

Building a Nickel Inventory in the USA: With detailed engineering and environmental review in progress at the Tamarack Nickel Project, the exploration activities in Michigan ensure that Talon remains on the forefront of nickel discovery and development in the USA. This strategic timing allows Talon to build a robust inventory of projects, ready to advance to development as market conditions and regulatory approvals align.

Marquette GMC dealership hosts car show fundraiser for cancer research

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Marquette GMC hosted its second Cruisin’ for Cancer car show fundraiser, and the proceeds are going to the Cancer Research Foundation.

The dealership has partnered with the Peninsula Pirates Car Club to put the fundraiser on for both years. Despite the rain, community members came to show off their old, new, and customized vehicles during the show. Matthew Lindberg, the head of the Peninsula Pirates Car Club, said they chose to support cancer research because it hits close to home for many people.

“I lost both my parents to cancer,” Lindberg said. “And a lot of other people have lost the battle of cancer so we’re here to remember the people we’ve lost and to celebrate the people that have made it and beat it.”

The dealership sold t-shirts, gave away bucket raffles, and enjoyed smoked brisket all in the name of fundraising for the Cancer Research Foundation.
