Here's where an AXA Travel Protection plan steps in with its "Emergency Medical Expenses" benefit. From hospital stays to doctor's fees, AXA can support and assist so you're not left navigating the complications of the Vietnamese healthcare system. Moreover, if the situation takes a serious turn and requires evacuation to the nearest medical facility or even repatriation, AXA Travel Protection's got your back. Here’s how travelers can benefit from an AXA Travel Protection Plan:

Medical Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.

Post-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Missed Connection: If you miss a connecting flight due to delays or cancellations, this coverage may help with expenses like rebooking fees and accommodations.

Additional Optional Travel Benefits:

  • Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver): Exclusive to Gold & Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit gives travelers extra coverage on their rental car against damage and theft.

Do I need Travel Insurance for Vietnam?

Although it's not required to have travel insurance for Vietnam, we highly recommend that travelers think about getting an insurance plan to make sure they stay well-protected during their visit. Why? There are several reasons:

Medical Emergencies: Given the adventurous activities in Vietnam, the potential for minor mishaps or unexpected health issues is notable. Having coverage for emergency medical expenses ensures that you can seek necessary medical attention without worrying about the financial burden.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue on.

Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: While Vietnam's healthcare has improved through the years, the quality of healthcare in more rural or remote areas may not be as advanced. In the event of a serious medical emergency, having coverage for emergency evacuation to the nearest suitable medical facility or repatriation becomes crucial.

How much does Travel Insurance cost for Vietnam?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost:  The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age:  Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Ecuador will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Vietnam hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. Travelers to Vietnam may want extra coverage. The Platinum Plan is a good choice for travelers who want a bit of extra coverage. Cancel for Any Reason is an option that offers coverage for canceling a trip for any reason. The Collision Damage Waiver coverage is also optional. It covers collisions, theft or damage to a rental car being used during your Vietnam trip.

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency Medical: Can cover medical expenses, hospital stays, and even emergency evacuations, covering the expenses of hefty bills and ensuring access to quality healthcare while away from home.

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Offers assistance in unexpected situations such as political unrest or natural disasters, ensuring safe and timely relocation to a secure location or repatriation back home.

Starting in 2023, travelers heading to Vietnam no longer have to show a valid Covid-19 vaccine card or a negative PCR test. The travel restrictions in Vietnam have been lifted, making the entry process simpler for all travelers.

Popular Tourist Places in Vietnam

When travelling to Vietnam, there is so much to see and enjoy that you will need to have enough time on your hands and an itinerary if you want to be able to enjoy the beauty of the country. To ensure that your holiday plans are all set, first sort out all the documentation and permissions from the authorities before you head to any of the locations you want to visit. Vietnam is known for its rich history, townships, seascapes and quaint streets that are dotted with restaurants that serve delicious Vietnamese cuisine. And always remember to carry your travel insurance policy with you to protect yourself from any emergency on your tours!

- Hoi An : You cannot miss a trip to the beautiful Hoi An city, where you can catch a glimpse of the historical architecture through the 15th-century merchant houses that were once trading centres for Chinese and Japanese silk merchants.

You could visit the stunning Japanese Bridge at the western end of Tran Phu Street and also the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation, which is the old town's most renowned temple.

- Sapa Countryside : If you love green spaces and treks, then a visit to the Sapa Countryside, surrounded by the awe-inspiring Hoang Lien Mountains, should be on your list. A number of ethnic minorities in Vietnam, such as the Giay, Hmong, and Red Dzao people, live close to the terraced paddy fields in the valley that is encircled by the Fansipan Mountain, Vietnam’s tallest peak. Sapa is now an old French hill station that is a busy tourist spot, unlike the green countryside.

- Hanoi : As busy as the country’s capital may be, locals and tourists find it difficult to avoid the allure of the city’s charm, where you can experience the best of the city life. If you enjoy art, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and Vietnam Fine Art Museum offer you a view into the country’s diverse and exquisite artistry. And while in the city, also take a trip to the historical Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum that is a tribute to the founder and former Prime Minister of modern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh.

- Halong Bay : Enjoy the views of the karst seascape at the Halong Bay and be sure to choose an overnight trip to this location since a day trip will not suffice. You can explore the caves in the bay, such as the Hang Sung Sot or the stalactites and stalagmites of the Hang Dao Go.

The limestone islands on the bay have been turned into artistic serrated pinnacles due to the wind and the water, and the charming scenery is worth admiring.

- Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park : Another great spot for huge and lovely caves and caverns is the World Heritage-listed Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. If you enjoy exploring awe-inspiring stalactite and stalagmite displays, put this place on your list.

One of the most important caves you must visit is the Paradise Cave here, which goes on for 31 kilometres below the ground. If you explore the Tu Lan Cave or the “wet cave”, be prepared to swim through the cave rivers. The marvellous Phong Nha Caves can be accessed by boats.

Best Time to Visit Vietnam

North Vietnam has dry and cold winters between December to February and very hot summers from May to August. Therefore, plan your trip such that you can either visit during spring (March to April) or autumn (September to November) when the days are warm but pleasant. Central Vietnam that covers destinations like Hue and Hoi An are best during February and August, where the months of July and August will be pleasantly warm. During the other months barring these, Central Vietnam experiences heavy rains and hurricane-like situations between August to November, which can ruin your trip to Vietnam.

South Vietnam is warm and pleasant throughout the year except for the monsoon season between June to November. However, during these months, the rain does not quite affect travel, even though there may be some cases of flooding. Between March to May, quite a few foreigners may avoid South Vietnam because the temperature is warmer and goes up to 40°C.

No matter when you visit Vietnam, it is important to always have your travel policy with you at all times. Choose a suitable Tata AIG travel insurance Vietnam plan today so that you have an enjoyable trip to Vietnam!

There are a few eventualities a standard travel insurance policy is unlikely to cover, including:

  • Pre-existing conditions: Make sure you declare any pre-existing medical conditions to your provider when you buy your policy, otherwise you won’t be covered.
  • Drugs or alcohol: But be aware that if your belongings are stolen or you’re injured while you’re under the influence, you might find your insurance provider won’t pay out.
  • Natural disasters: Vietnam’s long coastline makes it prone to storms and flooding, particularly in the cyclone season from May to November. While it’s unlikely that extreme weather will affect your trip, it’s worth knowing that you may not be covered if it does.
  • Terrorism: Vietnam doesn’t have a history of terrorist attacks, but it still pays to be vigilant. Although your travel insurance will cover the cost of any medical care you might need following an attack, it won’t cover much else.

How much is travel insurance to Vietnam?

The price of Vietnam travel protection can vary depending on the age, health status, and number of travelers being covered, as well as the duration of the trip and type of coverage.

As risk involved with the trip increases, prices may also increase. For example, a trip to Vietnam that lasts one week may cost less than a two-week trip, even if the type of coverage is the same, due to the extended length of the trip. Additionally, a traveler with pre-existing health conditions can usually expect to pay higher rates than a traveler who does not have any diagnosed pre-existing conditions.

In general, the cost of purchasing travel insurance in Vietnam for foreigners will range from $40 to $80 for a trip lasting from 7 to 10 days in Vietnam.

Tourist Destinations in Vietnam

You must take a journey to the stunning city of Hoi An, it is where you can see the examples of ancient architecture in the merchant homes from the 15th century. These homes were formerly hubs for trade between Chinese and Japanese silk merchants. The most famous temple in the old town is the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation, and you may see the beautiful Japanese Bridge at the western end of Tran Phu Street.

The nation's capital is extremely bustling. The residents and visitors can't help being drawn in by the city's attractiveness. It offers the finest of city living. Vietnam's rich and varied artistic culture is evident through the Vietnam Fine Art Museum and Museum of Ethnology. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a historical monument honouring contemporary Vietnam's founding father and previous prime minister.

Sapa Countryside

Encircled by the breathtaking Hoang Lien Mountains, this area is a must-visit for anyone who enjoys hiking and green spaces. Vietnamese ethnic minorities, including the Giay, Hmong, and Red Dzao people, reside in the terraced rice fields in the valley surrounded by the country's highest mountain, Fansipan Mountain. Unlike the verdant countryside, Sapa is today a bustling tourist destination and a historic French hill station.

Take in the sights of the karst landscape here, and plan an overnight visit—a day excursion is insufficient here. You can investigate the bay's caverns, including the Hang Dao Go's stalactites, stalagmites, and the Hang Sung Sot. The wind and sea have sculpted the limestone islands. The island is beautiful with the serrated pinnacles and the picturesque view. The entire landscape is worth visiting.

Vietnam is a country located at the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia, sharing its land borders with China to the North and Cambodia and Laos to the West. Additionally, the country shares water borders with Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. As one of the most populous countries in the world, Vietnam has a population of over 100 million.

Popularised due to its breathtaking landscapes, friendly and hospitable people, affordable prices, world-famous festivals, and exquisite beaches, Vietnam is a popular destination worldwide. Whether it is ease of travel, irresistible cuisine, affordability, or access to a rich cultural heritage, Vietnam is one of the top destinations for Indian travellers looking to travel internationally. These factors make Vietnam a popular destination for Indian travellers, topping the list of the most searched tourist destinations for Indians in 2023.

However, while travelling to Vietnam has much to offer and is relatively safe for tourists, it is still a developing country, and travellers might be subjected to a few risks, such as pickpocketing, contaminated food, or other travel-related risks, which can lead to financial loss or hamper the travel experience. This is where travel insurance for Vietnam showcases its ability to safeguard travellers from the financial impact of risks associated with travelling.

Here is all you need to know about travel insurance Vietnam to secure you and your loved ones when travelling to Vietnam.

What is Travel Insurance for Vietnam?

Travel insurance is a risk management tool specially designed to protect travellers from additional expenses arising from unexpected risks. When travelling, a traveller may be exposed to dozens of medical and non-medical risks, and travel insurance protects against financial loss and a negative travel experience.

Whether it is countering medical emergencies where travellers are expected to pay a much higher healthcare cost or non-medical risks like trip cancellation or missed connecting flights, there are numerous benefits to opting for travel insurance for Vietnam.

While the impact of these risks can vary in severity and frequency, with the right Vietnam travel insurance, travellers can considerably mitigate the effects of these risks and travel confidently. Due to these risks and their impact, travellers are advised to insure their India to Vietnam trip with the right policy.

Why waste time worrying about these risks when you can mitigate their impact and travel with confidence and peace of mind? This is why travel insurance in Vietnam is beneficial and highly recommended for all travellers, whether for leisure, business, or education.

Why Do You Need Travel Insurance When Going Abroad?

Travel insurance is an insurance policy that provides financial protection to travellers during their international stay or trips. Imagine you’re all set to enjoy a vacation at an exotic destination and unexpected events disrupt your travel plans: You miss your flight or have to delay your trip due to weather conditions or get hospitalised during your stay abroad due to some medical emergency. A travel insurance plan ensures that none of the trip or medical contingencies cause any financial burden to you. It covers you from the moment you reach the airport till you’re safely back to India from your trip.

Here are some key reasons why buying a travel insurance policy is important when going abroad:

Mandatory by Law

Some countries have made it mandatory for travellers to have a valid travel health insurance plan before entering their borders. For example, it is a prerequisite to purchase medical travel insurance to enter countries like Russia, Singapore, the UAE, Romania and Cuba regardless of the purpose of your visit. The main reason behind making travel insurance mandatory in some countries is to financially secure foreign visitors from unexpected events like passport loss or theft, lost or misplaced luggage, trip delay or cancellations, medical emergencies or accidents and COVID-19 like situations.

Visa Requirements

While there are countries that offer visa on arrival to India, many countries require you to buy a travel insurance policy to initiate the visa application process. For example, it is compulsory to have travel medical insurance with a minimum medical coverage of EUR 30,000 to get a Schengen Visa. This will allow you freely in any of the Schengen countries, including Switzerland, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal and Denmark. Other countries where travel health insurance is mandatory for the visa process include Turkey, Czech Republic, Ecuador, UAE, etc.

Cost of Medical Treatments

Medical expenses can be quite high in foreign countries than in India. The potentially high cost of medical treatments in case of unexpected illness or injury or accidental dental issues, not only increases your financial burden but also leaves you feeling helpless during your international vacation. An international travel medical insurance plan acts as a shield against unforeseen medical bills by offering cover for emergency medical hospitalisation, the cost of transporting the nearest hospital or back to India, and dental treatment due to an accident on your trip.

Coverages Offered

Besides offering international medical coverage, international travel insurance policies offer coverage for various baggage and trip-related contingencies. You lose your checked-in baggage or someone mistakenly takes your luggage or the airline delays or misdirects your checked-in baggage. Similarly, you may miss your connecting flight to your final travel destination or your trip may get delayed or interrupted or cancelled because of conditions that are beyond your control. All of these situations are covered under our plan.

How to Choose an International Travel Insurance Policy?

Selecting the right overseas travel insurance is a crucial for securing your trip abroad. It is important to choose an international travel insurance policy that offers comprehensive coverage and high sum insured instead of a cheap international travel insurance that doesn’t protect you adequately. So, how do you choose the right online international travel insurance? Here are a few pointers for you:

Check International Travel Insurance Policy Coverage

Check if the international travel health insurance policy covers emergency medical expenses, passport loss, baggage delays, baggage loss, trip cancellations, trip delays, trip interruptions, etc. We recommend you to look for comprehensive coverage when buying an international travel insurance online. For example, if you face a situation where the airline has misplaced your checked-in luggage, then our Reliance Travel Care Policy will help you get reimbursed for the lost baggage.

Look for Medical Emergency and Dental Treatment Covers

Best international travel insurance plans offer cover for a wide range of medical contingencies. You could get admitted in the hospital due to some accident or sudden illness and your travel plan should cover you for the hospitalisation expenses. Even if you need emergency dental treatment while on your trip then your international travel insurance should reimburse you for that. Make sure you get a plan that covers you for all of the previously mentioned scenarios (check out the Reliance Travel Care Policy for all these covers)

Choose Need-Based Sum Insured

Every international travel insurance plan has a Sum Insured, which is the maximum amount that an insurance company will pay toward a claim. The higher the Sum Insured, the better financial protection you get against medical emergencies and other trip-related contingencies. While we recommend you to choose an online international travel insurance policy that offers a high Sum Insured of up to $500,000, you need to select a plan based on your requirements.

Evaluate Claim Settlement Process

You should always check the travel insurer’s claim settlement ratio and process before buying international travel insurance online. A higher settlement ratio and a smoother claim procedure will ensure your claim is successfully processed.

How to Buy International Travel Insurance Policy Online?

Buying international travel insurance for your upcoming trip isn’t as easy as buying your favourite chocolate. You need to choose the right travel insurance that meets your requirements while giving comprehensive protection during your stay abroad. That’s why we’ve made it simple to buy overseas travel insurance online – just follow our step-by-step guide and you’re good to go.

Step 3: Check your premium details, enter your personal details and choose your preferred mode of payment.

Step 4: Get your international travel health insurance policy for your upcoming trip.

Factors that Affect Your Travel Insurance Premiums

Your international travel insurance premium is influenced by a combination of factors like the country you’re travelling to, your age and the duration of your trip. Check out the list below to know in detail how each factor affects your premiums:

Your Travel Destination

The country you choose as your travel destination affects your international travel insurance premium as each country carries its own risk, which the insurer assesses. Therefore, your premium will go higher if you’re travelling across USA and Canada in comparison to travelling to Asian destinations.

Length of Your Stay

Your international travel insurance premium is affected by your trip duration. A shorter trip results in lower premiums because the chances of risk is lower and the opposite applies for longer trips where the risk is higher. If you spend more time in your holiday destination, there is a higher risk of injury or illness since you’ll be out travelling to enjoy your holiday.

Age of Traveller(s)

The age of all travelling members plays a role in the premiums too. Older people are associated with medical higher risk as they have a high probability of having pre-existing diseases, therefore the premiums for them would be higher. On the other hand, younger travellers will have lower premiums as they are usually fitter and have a low medical risk.

Type of Insurance Plan

Different international travel health insurance plans cover different needs. If you’re a student going abroad for education, then we have an international travel insurance plan for students. If you take multiple trips in a year, then we have an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan . The premium changes based on your need and the type of insurance plan for that need.

Sum Insured

Every travel insurance policy has different plans that offer varying amounts of the Sum Insured. The Sum Insured is the maximum value that an insurance company will pay towards your claim. The claim could be related to flight delays, missed connecting flights, trip delays or interruptions, medical expenses, lost passport, loss or delay of checked-in baggage. So when the Sum Insured is high, the premium will be higher.

No such pre-approval is required before hospital admission in case of any medical emergency. Registration of claim is required to avail benefits under the policy. Please call the given numbers in the policy schedule to register your claim and confirm your coverage under the policy as soon as possible upon hospitalisation, intimation can be done even by sending an email or making a call to our 24x7 emergency assistance partner on provided email address or toll-free numbers. Please refer to the policy schedule for contact details.

A sub-limit is a limit placed on a specific type of coverage within an insurance policy. In travel insurance, a sub-limit is placed on the coverage for medical expenses for insured members of a specific age. So older members will be able to utilise only part of the sum insured amount for a medical emergency because of a sub-limit.

The claim procedure involves intimation and settlement.

The first step you take is to inform the Emergency Service Assistance Provider (EASP) by calling them on the Help Line number or via email. The hospital has to get in touch with the EASP and confirm if they want to accept the cashless facility and submit all the medical documents and bills to the EASP. Post this, the EASP will assess the claim and place a Guarantee of Pay (GoP) to the hospital.

In case the hospital does not agree to the EASP’s GoP, you can settle the bill with the hospital and later get reimbursed from Reliance General Insurance.

Medical Assistance & Emergency Services are provided by our Service Provider, Europ Assistance who are at your Service 24*7 during trip duration. Please provide Immediate intimation of any claim / requirement for emergency assistance while abroad to ensure that the Claim is not prejudiced. The United States of America offers a captivating blend of landscapes and renowned landmarks that attract a wide array of travellers. If you’re planning a trip to America, it’s essential to ensure a safe and financially protected journey by purchasing travel insurance from India.

Answering the question, “Is travel insurance mandatory for the USA,” you must understand that while travel insurance isn’t mandatory for visiting the USA, it is highly advisable. Considering the exorbitant medical costs and the likelihood of an extended trip, it’s wise to prioritise your security and well-being.

Why do I need travel insurance for the USA from India?

When travelling from India to the USA, it is essential to have travel insurance for several reasons.

One of the primary reasons for obtaining travel insurance is the high cost of healthcare in the USA. Medical expenses in the USA are considerably more expensive compared to India, and there are strict regulations regarding purchasing medications over the counter.

Other essential coverages that travel insurance for the USA may include are injuries due to adventure sports, personal liability, compassionate visits for hospitalised individuals, demise and repatriation, and COVID-related trip cancellation.

There are certain exclusions to be aware of when it comes to travel insurance coverage:

- Health issues or sickness as a result of war or breaching of the law

- If you consume intoxicants or banned substances, the insurer will not entertain any claims

- Such policies do not cover pre-existing diseases or illnesses that existed before and any related treatment expenses

- One does not receive any coverage for expenses related to cosmetic or obesity treatments during the insured travel

- There is no coverage for hospitalisation expenses or medical costs arising from self-inflicted injuries

Benefits of travel insurance for the USA

Travel insurance for the USA offers numerous benefits that significantly enhance your travel experience.

  • One of the key advantages is emergency travel assistance. Whether you lose your travel funds, Passport, or any other valuable item, travel insurance can provide support and guidance to help you navigate through such stressful situations.
  • Another significant benefit is the hassle-free claim process. With digital insurance platforms, purchasing travel insurance becomes a seamless process, and raising claims is simplified without the need for extensive paperwork or multiple appointments. This saves you time and effort, actively allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip.
  • Coverage for flights and baggage is also a crucial aspect of travel insurance. Unforeseen circumstances can disrupt your travel plans. However, with the right policy, you can receive compensation and assistance to alleviate the financial and logistical burdens associated with such incidents.
  • One of the advantages of USA travel insurance is the ability to customise your plan according to your specific needs. You can tailor your policy based on factors like the number of people travelling, the duration of your journey, and the age of the insured individuals. This flexibility ensures you have the appropriate coverage for your unique travel requirements.
  • Lastly, many travel insurance policies offer zero deductibles, meaning you can make claims without paying any amount from your pocket. This financial benefit adds an extra layer of security, ensuring coverage in the event of any covered expenses during your trip.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Vietnam

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Vietnam. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Vietnam can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Types of Life Insurance

While there's many different types of life insurance policies , broadly speaking, there are two types of life insurance: temporary and permanent. Let's go over each in detail.

Temporary life insurance

Temporary life insurance is often called term life insurance. This type of policy covers you for a set amount of time before expiring, usually between 10-30 years. If you pass away after your policy expires, your family won't receive any benefits. Additionally, your policy won't accrue cash value like a permanent policy. That said, some term life insurance policies offer a conversion from term to whole life insurance, so you can extend your coverage.

Because its benefits aren't guaranteed, term life policies are generally cheaper than permanent life insurance. That said, the vast majority of term life insurance policies never pay out. on

Permanent life insurance

Permanent life insurance is an umbrella term for a variety of life insurance policies that will insure you indefinitely and guarantee a payout as long as you maintain your policy. Policy types that fall under permanent life insurance includes:

  • Whole life insurance
  • Universal life insurance
  • Variable life insurance
  • Variable universal life insurance
  • Simplified life insurance
  • Guaranteed issue life insurance

These policies vary widely in purpose and intended buyers, but all guarantee death benefits to your loved ones. Some permanent life insurance policies, like whole, universal, and variable have a cash value component , which you can use as a savings tool or to leave your heirs a larger death benefit.

How to Pick the Best Life Insurance Policy for You

Finding the right fit in life insurance starts with finding a trusted insurance agent. Because there are so many state regulations, shopping for homeowners or auto insurance can be easily done online. Life insurance is not required. So it's a voluntary purchase. Many buyers don't know what they need or when they need it. Before making your selection, consider a few things:

Some companies will sell you a policy for your child as soon as they're born. While this may seem morbid, early sign-up means lower rates for a policy your child could enjoy in the future. Regardless, early sign-up equates to more policy for lower premiums and a higher likelihood of acceptance. At 20, you may be healthier and be able to pay into the policy for a longer period compared to when you're 50 with more age-related conditions.

As a general rule, never agree to more than you can afford. For the average life insurance agent, their job is to sell you a large policy with a large commission. Consider not only how much you make now, but how likely your current income is to continue. If you work on a project basis and your project is scheduled to end in 12 months, you may want to reconsider a policy premium outside your monthly savings.

How much are you prepared to buy? Some people only want a small policy to cover funerals and other end-of-life expenses. Others build a life policy into their retirement plan. Whatever direction you're going, involving a financial planner could help you make the right decisions. Depending on the carrier, customers can also compare set limits with index universal life policies, which set no limit. These policies never expire, and the value builds over the entirety of your life.

Living Benefits

Life happens unexpectedly. You could be healthy one day and in the hospital the next. Many life policies offer living benefits. These allow you to draw a limited amount out of your policy to cover medical and other bills you cannot pay while sick.

Much like a 401(k), many life insurance policies have penalties for early withdrawal. No matter what policy you want, this question is critical to an informed decision. It's a question of how early you can withdraw and how much you'll lose from the total to have the money in 10 years instead of 30 or after death.

Some policies require insured parties to pay premiums for at least one year before any significant payout would be available. Suicide exclusions are common. Even with no medical exam policies, the company may still do a check for known conditions. An insurance company has to mitigate its risk.

Flexibility

Once you've been denied a life insurance policy, a mark goes on your record. No matter the reasons, other insurance companies may deny you coverage based on the first denial. So consider your whole situation and choose your policy carefully before you submit any applications. Some policies have greater flexibility if you lose your job or otherwise can't make payments. Others will lapse if you miss even one payment.

Payment Type

Even within whole life or term life insurance policies, customers have the option to choose guaranteed fixed or variable rates. Some have guaranteed payouts, but you'll need to ask your agent for details.

What is your intended use? Why are you shopping for a life insurance policy in the first place, and what are your goals? Many successful financial planners also have a background in life insurance. So while they may not be able to find you a specific life insurance policy, financial planners can help you set out a blueprint for your purchase.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed the Best Life Insurance Companies

In life insurance, it's easy to get "sold a bill of goods." Many life insurance agents pass a state test to be thrown into the deep end. Agents sell the company product, but not all know the products. In this vein, we look at the products each company offers. We also look at agent training.

A good life insurance agent may not volunteer all facts upfront. But a company's agents should answer questions about its products accurately and in a way the average consumer can digest. Agents should be able to inform you about the long-term benefits and limitations. This will help customers find the right policy for their long-term plan.

We consider affordability, policy sizes available, and performance for a comprehensive assessment in our life insurance rating methodology . If you can, we recommend also working with a financial advisor to make a plan for your future with life insurance.

To inform our choices for the best life insurance companies, we spoke with the following experts:

  • Paul LaPiana , head of product at MassMutual
  • Barbara Pietrangelo , CFP, CLU, and chair of the nonprofit Life Happens
  • Wykeeta Peel , Corporate Vice President and Market Manager, African American Market Unit at New York Life

The Experts' Advice on Choosing The Best Life Insurance for You

How much life insurance coverage do you believe the average buyer should have.

Paul LaPiana, Head of Product at MassMutual

"There are different approaches to determining how much life insurance you need. One is the 'human life' approach, which estimates the current value of your future earning potential. Another is securing specific coverage to pay off debts such as a mortgage or provide for the education of children. A comprehensive protection plan should provide the right amount of coverage over the course of your working life and into retirement."

Barbara A. Pietrangelo, Chair of Life Happens

"There is no one-size-fits-all life insurance policy because everyone is different. One way to get a rough estimate is to multiply your income by 10 to 15; another is adding $100,00 to that amount, should you have a child and anticipate college education expenses.

Your best bet is to talk to a financial professional or use the Life Insurance Needs Calculator on LifeHappens.org to analyze what's right for you."

Wykeeta Peel, Corporate Vice President & Market Manager African American Market Unit at New York Life

"As you consider what policy best meets your needs, it can help to answer four key questions: First, how much death benefit do you need? Second, how long will you need that coverage? Third, what is your budget (or how much monthly premium can you afford to pay?), and finally, what is your investment risk tolerance?

To determine how much death benefit makes sense, it's helpful to think beyond using life insurance to cover funeral expenses and consider whether anyone is relying on the policy owner's income to maintain a lifestyle, pay rent or a mortgage, or fund a child's education and for how long.

There are various rules of thumb regarding the right amount of Life insurance coverage. Some tips can be found online, but they only provide an estimate and don't necessarily factor in an individual's specific needs. In my opinion, human guidance, powered by technology, is required. Basically, it comes down to how much money your loved ones would need to remain on firm financial ground if your earnings were no longer in the picture and that is different for everyone."

What is the biggest opportunity you see for improvement in the life insurance industry?

"Increased accessibility through digital and other channels as well as through underwriting enhancements. Increased tailoring of products and features. And an increased emphasis on health and wellness programs."

"Having enough qualified insurance professionals to walk potential buyers through the multiple benefits of life insurance will be pivotal to the growth of the industry. Education is a key factor here, as professional agents also need to be able to explain life insurance and its benefits in an easy, digestible way, especially when there are so many misconceptions about life insurance."

"The need for life insurance is greater than ever. In fact, a recent New York Life Wealth Watch survey found that 37% of adults have been thinking about life insurance more often these days – and half of adults report that financial products that provide protection (50%) and reliability (50%) are more important now compared to last year. This may be especially true for middle-market and Cultural Market families.

Our organizational structure of having Cultural Market agents embedded in the communities where we live and work allows us to understand the needs of diverse communities and develop solutions that resonate with them."

What advice would you give to buyers who are debating whether or not to buy life insurance?

"It is difficult to say with any certainty how healthy you will be years from now. That's why securing life insurance, and insuring your insurability, today, when you are the youngest you'll ever be again, and perhaps your healthiest is a wise decision."

"Do you love someone? If the answer is yes, then life insurance is certainly something you should consider. Many buy gifts and experiences to express their love, but haven't considered that life insurance is just another way to say I love you. Nothing says support like ensuring your family's financial security and peace of mind."

"If you have someone depending on your income, you should consider purchasing life insurance. A death benefit from a life insurance policy can replace income from the loss of a breadwinner, ensure a family can stay in their home, fund educational or retirement expenses, address debt and so much more.

A life insurance policy can also help you grow your family's wealth over time. Once the risk of an unexpected loss has been managed, you can begin to think more broadly about your family's financial future. Life insurance can enable your mindset to shift from death to growth."

What's the most important thing buyers should look for when choosing a life insurance agent/company to buy from?

"With life insurance, you are securing a future commitment that may be decades away. Research the company behind the policy to ensure it has high financial strength ratings, longevity, and an excellent track record of paying claims."

"When looking for an insurance agent or company, be sure to do your research. When comparing companies, be sure to remember that the policy features that fit you and your loved ones best is the most important factor. Don't automatically assume you should buy from the higher-rated company.

If the policy from the other company has more of what you're looking for, it might be the better choice. If you're unsure where to start, try the Life Happens Agent Locator to find an insurance professional in your area."

  • "The insurers' track record: At its core, life insurance is protection - a hedge against the unexpected - and you are paying premiums in exchange for the promise that the insurer will be there when you need them, so the financial strength and track record of the company backing your policy is critical.
  • Customer service: Are service professionals available by phone and digital channels? Is there is an online dashboard where you can manage your policy? Beyond ensuring assistance is available after you purchase a policy, it's also critical to ensure you have access to trusted advice and guidance before you buy.
  • Flexibility in conversion: How easy is it to change? Life can be unpredictable and while term insurance can cover your loved ones through a critical period of time, you may decide that access to cash value is an important piece of your strategy.
  • Accelerated online applications : Online applications are convenient but don't replace human guidance. Keep in mind that accelerated online applications may have a maximum coverage amount, meaning that you may not be able to get all the coverage you may need exclusively through an online process.
  • A range of payment options: It's important to understand how often you're required to make premium payments and whether and how often you can change the frequency of payments."

Best Life Insurance FAQs

According to JD Power's 2023 life insurance study, State Farm is the highest-rated life insurance company when it comes to overall customer satisfaction. However, you still may want to shop around for quotes from various insurers if you're looking to purchase a new policy.

There isn't one best life insurance company, because the best option for you will depend on the type of policy you're looking for. It's best to work with a qualified insurance agent to help you find the best coverage. If you're deciding between multiple similar options, it's also worth consulting J.D. Power's life insurance customer satisfaction study . The latest study ranks State Farm as the top pick for individual life insurance, outpacing Nationwide by three points.

The best type of life insurance policy for you will differ from someone else's, as your policy should be tailored to your needs. The best policy for you will be affordable and will offer the benefits best suited to your situation. For example, some policies are only meant to cover end-of-life expenses such as burial and funeral arrangements, whereas others include living benefits like a cash value insurance plan , which you can borrow against during your lifetime.

Some life insurance policies are advertised as "no medical exam." This doesn't mean the insurer won't ask you about known conditions or look at medical records. Policies with no medical exam also tend to offer lower benefits with higher premiums. Most companies have a network of medical examiners, some of whom can come to your home. You can find our guide on the best no exam life insurance here.

Each situation is different and requires a knowledgeable life insurance agent to assess your best options. Bring all your questions and the coverage you're looking for to an insurance agent near you to explore your options.

41 immigrants become US citizens at Flag Day ceremony in Reno

travel insurance india to vietnam

Abraham Gregorio Vasquez Mendez said one thing he appreciates about the United States is running the faucet and seeing water — even better, hot water.

“In Mexico, you open the faucet and who knows,” Vasquez Mendez said.

Vasquez Mendez would tell his children: “You have no idea how easy it is to live here in the United States.”

Vasquez Mendez was one of 41 immigrants to be sworn in as U.S. citizens on June 14 — Flag Day — at the federal courthouse in Reno. He shared his story with the assembled crowd.

After immigrating from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Vasquez Mendez flew to Las Vegas in 2011.

“I went from what was, at the time, one of the most dangerous cities in the world to the capital of sin. Off to an interesting start,” Vasquez Mendez said in his ceremony speech.

After living and working in education in Texas, Vasquez Mendez and his wife, Kelly Bodtke, moved to Reno just before the pandemic, which meant a double adjustment to a new place in tough times, but they knew this was the best place.

“We love this place, we love the four seasons,” Vasquez Mendez said. “Unlike Texas which is too hot or too cold.”

Vasquez Mendez is a special education teaching assistant at Hug High School, and his wife works as a teacher in Washoe County. He is in an accelerated online program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas through the county to become a paraprofessional.

He’s had a green card for the last 10 years and decided it was time to take his citizenship test.

“It’s just a ceremony, but that ceremony, it’s an important reminder that something has changed,” Vasquez Mendez told the RGJ. “This is a reminder that this is your house, this is your place.”

In Vasquez Mendez’s speech, he said he was glad to be together with his family in the U.S. and allowed to jump back into the education world.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me,” Vasquez Mendez said. “Sometimes, I can get upset by the political climate, but now I have a vote … which is better (than) just to rant over the internet.”

The happiest ceremony in a federal courtroom

The courtroom was packed full as 41 individuals waited to become U.S. citizens. They came from across the globe, 14 countries total: Afghanistan, Canada, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Iran, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia and Vietnam.

The room was full of smiles as Judge Howard McKibben led them through the proceedings and the pledge of allegiance.

Paris Rich, the courtroom deputy, read to all of the individuals the oath of allegiance and they played a video with a message from President Joe Biden and a rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

Patricia Velasco Gonzalez, a new citizen from Mexico, and Vasquez Mendez then spoke on their experiences to become citizens.

Gonzalez’s husband spoke on her behalf, saying that she was dedicated to studying for her citizenship test and it took her four months of long hours of work.

“I’m very happy for what she did and that we get to go forward,” he said.

McKibben gave closing comments, welcoming the new citizens, expressing his appreciation for their doing the immigration and citizenship process “the right way.”

“This is obviously a very special moment for all of you, for your lives. And it’s one of the pleasant functions for the court,” McKibben said. "In fact, it's one of the few occasions where everybody goes out of the courtroom happy."

“You’re being adopted by our great nation. I’m certain that you will enjoy your life here in the United States.”

The crowds broke into applause and in celebration of Flag Day, everyone waved their American flags and stood up cheering.

“This is our home. No matter where we are, we have a country, we have our place: the United States of America,” Vasquez Mendez said.
