The Pearse Lyons Distillery is located in Dublin’s historic Liberties. Here we create our award winning, small batch Irish Whiskey in a restored 18 Century Church. The former Church of St James, now a distillery, is a home worthy of the spirit it embodies.

Named after the late Dr. Pearse Lyons, founder and whiskey innovator, the distillery opened its doors in 2017. Born from passion and family tradition, Pearse along with his wife Deirdre aspired to create a distillery like no other in Dublin.

Paying homage to their ancestors, five generations of coopers in Dublin, the distillery experience takes you on an immersive journey where you discover and explore the art of Irish Whiskey distillation and the unique culture of The Liberties, Dublin.

Experience Sip and Stroll: Historic Walk Dublin

Dublin whiskey walk, what's the buzz about our whiskey walk.

If you want to explore Dublin and have a interest in Whisky and Guiness look no further! I booked the „historic Dublin whiskey walk“ experience for me and 7 friends. The tour was excellent, we could not have wished for anything better. Derek is not only exceptionally knowledgeable about whiskey, he also knows a lot about the history of the city and the country. The entire communication was very professional and he also gave us a lot of advice on what not to miss in our time in Dublin! We had the best afternoon!! Would definitely recommend and do again!

This man is a walking whiskey-dictonary! Nice guide, cool bars, good time with my friends! Better take some notes, because you will get a truckload of information 🙂

Patrick was a fantastic and knowledgeable guide as first we strolled through the Liberties, learning more about Pearse Lyons, Roe & Coe and Powers, and then we sipped, stopping at some top notch pubs. Derek, who had organized it, even came by to our last stop at The Swan. I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in upping your knowledge of Irish Whiskey and also wanting some good Cráic - Slaínte!

This was a fantastic experience. Derek is a brilliant guide and we had the best time with him. He takes you off the beaten path to some incredible old pubs, you taste some delicious whiskeys and his knowledge, stories and anecdotes are just incredible. I cannot recommend this enough and when we are back we will try some of the other tours on offer. Such an amazing treat!

Patrick Fox was a great guide and so informative! He was very knowledgeable on the whiskey we had and my husband liked his overall personality. I liked he didn’t mind we were a bit behind because of traffic. Would do this again next visit to Dublin! Highly recommend

The Irish Whiskey Experience was mindblowing with Derek! We had a great time walking around The Liberties and understanding the history of the Distilleries in that area. Derek took us back in time and made us taste different varieties of whiskey at amazing traditional Irish pubs and bars. We also had delicious toasties at the Capstan Bar and we all were stunned with how much Dublin has to offer in respect of Whiskey and Distilleries. We finished off the tour by having whiskey and pints at the Swan Bar and it was an awesome experience with Derek. He was a great and friendly host and made sure our Sunday was well spent.

The Spirit of Dublin

Whiskey making and entrepreneurship have been in the Teeling genes as far back as 1782 when Walter Teeling set up a small craft distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the industrial centre of Dublin City.

Since 2012, Jack and Stephen Teeling, the latest generation of Teeling whiskey makers, have been putting their own mark on Irish whiskey and came full circle in 2015 when they proudly opened the new Teeling Whiskey Distillery just down the road from where the original family distillery once stood. It is the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125 years and has won several international accolades for excellence over the years.

What People Say About Us

whiskey tours dublin

The tour was amazing and the whiskey even more! We really enjoyed our tour with my sister! Felix was a great tour guy!
Even if you don’t drink whiskey (your loss ;)) the Teeling Whiskey Tour/Tasting is a must-do in Dublin. Learning about how whiskey is made plus the history of why whisky is not just something to drink, but an important part of Irish culture was awesome. Our guide Aiveen knew everything you’d want to know about the entire process and was engaging and fun. The building is beautiful with a custom bar with Teeling crafted cocktails of which my wife Beth and I are drinking right now :)
Lovely tour definitely the best in dublin, well organised especially for fathers day. Our tour guide Cian was amazing and very interactive, I don't think we could've got a better guide. Tasting was explained very professionally and the old fashioned was unreal🤤

Jameson Distillery Bow St: It’s History, The Tours + Handy Info

The Jameson ‌Distillery‌ on Bow St is the most popular of the many whiskey distilleries in Dublin .

In fact, aside from the Old Bushmills Distillery , the Jameson Distillery in Dublin is the most historic of the many whiskey distilleries in Ireland .

Though it no longer produces whiskey (that’s reserved for the Midleton Distillery in Cork), the Bow St distillery is now a popular visitors centre with loads to discover and enjoy.

Below, you’ll find info on the different Jameson Distillery tour options, along with the history of the area. Dive on in!

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows before visiting the Jameson Distillery

Although booking onto the Jameson Distillery tour is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Find Jameson’s whiskey distillery in the same place it’s been for the last 240 years, on Bow Street in Smithfield. While walkable from central Dublin, you can also jump off at the Smithfield stop of the Luas Red Line (it’s a 2-minute walk then).

2. Opening hours

The opening hours for the Jameson Distillery on Bow St. are Monday to Thursday: 11:00 – 5:30 pm. Friday to Saturday: 11:00 – 6.30 pm and Sundays from 12:00 to 5:30 pm.

3. Admission

The standard Jameson Distillery tour costs between €26 for adults and €30 depending on whether you are visiting during peak or off-peak hours. This includes the 40-minute guided tour and whiskey tasting. Prices may change.

4. Several different tours

There are several different Jameson Distillery tours on offer, from the standard Bow St Experience to a Whiskey Cocktail making class. More info below.

The history of the Jameson Distillery in Dublin

As we mentioned earlier, this is a place with a fair bit of history! Though it no longer produces whiskey for Jameson (that’s reserved for the New Midleton Distillery in County Cork), the Bow St distillery is now a historic visitors centre with loads to discover and enjoy.

But how did it all start?

John Jameson himself was originally a lawyer from Alloa in Scotland before he founded his distillery on Bow St in 1780. The distillery was expanded in 1805 when his son, John Jameson II, joined him, and the business was renamed John Jameson & Son’s Bow Street Distillery.

Jameson’s son (and then grandson) did a fine job of expanding the business, and by 1866 the site had grown to upwards of five acres in size. Described by many as a ‘city within a city’, the distillery also housed saw mills, engineers, carpenters, painters and coppersmith shops.

The inevitable fall

Following this growth, however, came the inevitable fall. American Prohibition, Ireland’s trade war with Great Britain and the introduction of Scotch blended whiskey all contributed to Bow St’s struggles.

By the mid-1960s, Jameson felt they had no choice but to merge with previous rivals to create the Irish Distillers Group. Bow St finally closed in 1971, and operations were moved to the modern facility at New Midleton in Cork.

If you’re looking to take the Jameson Distillery tour, you’ve several options to choose from, each of which varies in price and overall experience.

Note: if you book a tour via one of the links below we  may make a tiny commission that helps us keep this site going. You won’t pay extra, but we really do appreciate it.

1. The Bow St. Experience (€26-30 p/p)

It’s probably best to kick off with the Bow St. Experience and truly get to know this famous old whiskey. You’ll get a guided tour of the distillery by an ambassador who’ll impart all of the building’s long history and heritage through the good times and the bad!

You’ll even be able to enjoy a drink at the exact spot where it all began. The tour lasts 40-minutes in total and includes a comparative whiskey tasting session. If you’re planning on visiting the Guinness Storehouse, too, this combo tour has excellent reviews.

2. The Black Barrel Blending Class (€60 p/p)

Want to see how whiskey is made first-hand and then try making it yourself? That’s what the Black Barrel Blending Class is all about and you’ll end up creating a one-of-a-kind blend of your own!

Costing €60 and lasting 90 minutes in total, the session is hosted by a Jameson Craft Ambassador who’ll guide you through the whole process with an expert touch. You’ll learn how to blend whiskey like a pro and also sample a few premium whiskeys along the way.

These sessions are limited to six people and, due to alcohol consumption levels, you won’t be allowed to book the Bow St. Experience on the same day.

3. The Whiskey Cocktail Making Class (€55 p/p)

Anyone who’s enjoyed an Old Fashioned in the past will know that there’s much more to drinking whiskey neat or on the rocks!

Jump onto Jameson’s Whiskey Cocktail Making Class and find out how to take your whiskey experience to a new level by crafting three cocktails of your own – a Jameson Whiskey Sour, Jameson Old Fashioned and Jameson Punch.

Taking place in their Shaker’s Bar, the session lasts for 60 minutes and costs €55. Hosted by an expert Jameson bartender, you’ll get to taste all of your own creations and hear a few stories along the way before finishing up at JJ’s Bar for a punch created by the Shaker’s team.

4. The Secret Whiskey Tasting (€40)

Ok, so there isn’t anything particularly secret about this one , but you do get to try four of Jameson’s finest whiskeys! Hosted by a Jameson Brand Ambassador, you’ll get to try Jameson Original, Jameson Crested, Jameson Distillery Edition and Jameson Black Barrel Cask Strength. And the cool thing is, is that two of them are only available at the distillery.

Costing €40 and lasting 40 minutes in total, this exclusive tour is ideal for shorter visits or if you’re trying to cram a bunch of activities into one day. Available 7 days a week, book on anytime and enjoy a sip!

What is the Guinness Storehouse?

If you want to learn what exactly goes into a pint of the "black stuff" and the story of how this famous stout went from humble beginnings to being sold all around the world, then the Guinness Storehouse, the home of Guinness in St James’s Gate in Dublin and winner of the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2023, is the place to start

Guinness Storehouse_web-size_2500x1200px

St James's Gate, Dublin

The story of Guinness goes back more than 250 years, when Arthur Guinness, from Celbridge in County Kildare, decided to set up a brewery. In 1759, he signed a 9,000-year lease at a site at St James’s Gate in Dublin city centre . He built the Guinness brewery up slowly, and ten years later, started exporting barrels of stout by ship to England.

By 1868, St James’s Gate was like a mini city, with a cooperage, barley maltings and even its own railway and fire brigade. The company built its own barges to transport barrels of stout along Ireland’s waterways and hired scientists to perfect the stout.

When you arrive at the Guinness Storehouse and walk among the brewery buildings, the cobbled streets and tram tracks, and arrive at the famous black gates, the story starts to come to life. This is the largest stout brewery in the world and during a visit, you will take a journey through the life and story of this iconic beer.

Barley pit at the Guinness Storehouse

Barley pit at Guinness Storehouse

At the Guinness Storehouse visitor attraction, the self-guided tour starts with the basics of how Guinness is brewed. You will learn about the four ingredients that go into making the perfect beer – water, barley (which is mashed and roasted), hops and yeast – while you go along walkways of different levels, with waterfalls, hops growing behind glass and industrial pipes and fittings giving some of the sounds, aromas and atmosphere of a brewery.

Along the way, through audio-visual displays, you will learn about Arthur Guinness and his family , before visiting the roasting area to learn how the barley is milled, mashed, separated and roasted at 232°C for the perfect flavour, aroma and colour.

The storehouse building itself was built between 1902 and 1904 and was used as a fermentation house. During your visit you will see pipes, machinery and huge vats preserved from those times.

The fermentation area shows the final stage of the brewing process, when the yeast is added to the mix of barley, water and hops. A cooperage area tells the story of the skills of the barrelmakers.

Exhibit of past adverts of Guinness

Past Guinness adverts

In 1929 Guinness started producing its famous colourful ads and pub signs , with the slogans "Guinness is good for you" and "My Goodness, My Guinness", featuring zoo animals including sea lions, penguins and of course the famous toucan. This exhibition is one of the most popular areas for visitors.

Clever advertising helped spread the story around the world, and in 2009, when Guinness celebrated its 250th anniversary, 50 million people around the world raised a glass to toast Arthur’s Day.

Today, Guinness is the world’s best loved stout. It is brewed in 50 countries and sold in more than 120 countries. It is estimated that 10 million glasses of Guinness are enjoyed every day around the world.

People at the Gravity bar with pints of Guinness

Gravity Bar, Guinness Storehouse

There are three tour options to try at the Guinness Storehouse:

  • A basic self-guided Storehouse experience, which includes a drink at the Gravity Bar .
  • You can also add on a "Stoutie" option, a second pint with your selfie on the head, or visit the Guinness Academy , to learn how to pour the perfect pint.
  • A Connoisseur ticket gives you an exclusive tasting in the Connoisseur bar and a pint-pouring session.

Your visit will end at the top floor Gravity Bar, which has floor to ceiling windows with 360-degree views of Dublin city. The vista stretches as far south as the Dublin and Wicklow mountains, across Dublin Bay, and north to Howth peninsula, taking in landmarks such as St Patrick’s Cathedral and the iconic Poolbeg chimneys.

Before you raise your beer glass to sip your creamy pint of Guinness, you will see how it is poured and allowed to settle halfway through. Experts have worked out that the necessary time for this "perfect pour" is 119.53 seconds.

Allow at least 1.5 hours for a visit to the Storehouse – but you can stay longer as there is a lot to take in, and there are cafés and bars on different levels if you need a break, and a gift shop of all things Guinness on the first floor.

Glass of Roe & Co whiskey

Roe & Co whiskey distillery, Dublin city

The Guinness Storehouse is in the historic Liberties area of Dublin, which was once home to many of the city’s whiskey distilleries.

For things to do nearby, you might like to visit Jameson Distillery in Smithfield, or the Roe & Co or Pearse Lyons and Co , distilleries are both within walking distance. On the tours, you’ll learn about whiskey distilling and the area’s famous " Golden Triangle " of distilleries.

Within 20 minutes’ walk of the Storehouse, you will find two of Dublin's most historic buildings – St Patrick’s Cathedral , founded in 1191 and Christ Church Cathedral , which dates back to the year 1030.

Need to know

You're advised to book tickets in advance, but you can buy tickets when you arrive (expect queues at busy times).

Tours are self-guided and the Self-guided and Gravity Bar ticket includes a voucher for a pint of Guinness, another beer or a soft drink at Gravity Bar.

Children 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The Guiness Storehouse is open seven days a week, from Sunday to Thursday, 10am to 7pm (last entry 5pm), and Friday and Saturday, 10am to 8pm (last entry 6pm).

To arrive by bus , take the 13, 40 or 123. The nearest Luas (tram) stop is St James’s Hospital.

There is free parking in the visitor’s car park on Crane Street, but spaces are limited.

The building is fully accessible and has lifts throughout.
