A number of games have been touted as a spiritual successor to the much loved Planescape: Torment - one even had the audacity to incorporate "Torment" in its name - but Disco Elysium is the first to capture what made its spiritual predecessor so special. Not only must there be lots of text and not only must the text be well-written but the text must actually be fun to read. If your gameplay loop is largely reading (or listening since the Final Cut is fully voice-acted), that loop has to be enjoyable. Sounds simple when you put it like that but creating an enjoyable RPG when there's almost no combat to pad out the runtime and only a small game world to explore is a task so difficult that only two games in more than twenty years have managed to pull it off.

On the surface Disco Elysium is a buddy cop story (albeit one where you're the loose cannon, rather than the by-the-book straight guy): there has been a murder which turns out to be a lot less open-and-shut than initial appearances might lead you to believe. Your PC is (as you learn early in the game) a brilliant officer with a distinguished career but stress, heartbreak and untreated but self-medicated depression have broken you. You awake from a three-day bender that has left you with severe dissociative amnesia so that your character's first hours are spent making sense of his world (which, conveniently, allows you, the player, to learn about the world at the same time).

And the game's doomed world is not a happy one. The story is set in a town named Martinaise, in a country named Revachol. Martinaise was once a pleasant resort-cum-working-port but 43 years previously, revolution followed by counter-revolution left the town in ruins. Martinaise was ground zero for Operation Deathblow , the invasion by a foreign coalition which broke the Commune of Revachol (as one of the characters in the game asks: what kind of people come up with a name like "Operation Deathblow"? Murderers, that's who). That same Coalition of Nations are still nominally in charge and through either accidental neglect or deliberate policy, much of Martinaise remains in a state of ruin and - to a large degree - beyond the writ of law. As a backdrop to the game's events, a militant, unionised workforce are in an industrial dispute with the town's monopoly employer and the murder that you're investigating has the potential to ignite an already smouldering conflict.

If all this sounds like Trouble At T'Mill: the videogame , the deftness of the writing lifts it beyond the relentlessly Brechtian. The pathos and sadness is balanced by slapstick humour, politics of left, right and centre are ruthlessly satirised and the cast of supporting characters are drawn with the finest of brushes. The (peerless) writing is matched by the art style which combines modernism, fauvism and cubism with the grotesquerie of Giger and Bosch.

The Walkthroughs

Disco Elysium is a game that supports (and, for trophy hunters, requires) two playthroughs. Goodest of the Good Cops provides an efficient, thorough and coherent path through the game. If you've not played the game before, or if you're not interested in trophies, this is the walkthrough to use.

Baddest of the Bad Cops , which guides you towards the Platinum trophy, is a lot more metagamey. Since it provides less context and sometimes directs you to do slightly odd things, I do not recommend this for a first or only playthrough, particularly since it misses out on a crucial part of any murder investigation!

The playthroughs use the Final Cut release (which is available as a free upgrade for all supported platforms). The principal difference vs. the original release is the addition of the political vision quests. If you only have the original release, simply skip the irrelevant content.

The walkthroughs are bookended by reference sections. The game's character creation system is both innovative and unique and this section is worth reading before you start playing. Finally, there is a reference section for the game's loot and a list of the game's trophies .

General Tips

Quick save frequently because the game crashes randomly. Fortunately, it does not mess up saves.

You're "supposed" to take failure in your stride (although given that it's a single player game, take that as you will). However, if you actually played the game like that, you would miss out on huge amounts of content and experience rewards. In the walkthrough, checks that you want to pass are indicated by "make". Those where success or failure doesn't matter are indicated by "attempt". There are a few checks that you want to fail and these are called out as well. Quick save before you "make" a check.

It's not immediately clear how you use consumables (drugs and alcohol). You need to equip them in one of your hands and use the corresponding action button (L3 or R3 depending on which hand you've equipped the item in).

The game is on a clock. Each day starts at 07:30 and the clock stops at 02:00 the next morning. That said, most NPCs are unavailable after 22:00 hours. Time only passes when you're talking to people - each conversation topic is roughly 30 seconds of in-game time. This means that you can explore freely without fear that you're losing valuable time. Although there is no time limit, you will generally want to use your waking hours productively. However, you may occasionally want to skip time. The best way of doing this is reading books or, if your partner has gone for the day, sitting on a bench.

The game is buggy. I've documented in the walkthrough where I found bugged interactions but if something doesn't appear when you expect it, try quick saving and loading to see whether it fixes things.

There is a fast travel system that allows you to go between three locations once the entire map has opened up on day 3. To use the system, you must be at one of the three fast travel points (outside Whirling-in-Rags, the Fishermen Shacks and the church) and you must have bought the map. The map is accessed from the quest page but can be buggy. If you are unable to select a location, switch back to the quests and then back to the map which seems to fix things.

Conceptualization is the god stat. Look out for Il Coppo del'Arte callouts in the walkthrough which unlock both the trophy and a thought called Actual Art Degree . Once this is internalised, you start earning XP for Conceptualization passive skill checks which quickly mount up. Besides Conceptualization, the most useful skills are Logic, Drama, Empathy, Authority, Physical Instrument, Hand/Eye Coordination, Interfacing and Composure. Try to get these useful skills to 6 and others up to 4 as soon as possible.

If you want your tie to talk to you, start the game with an Inland Empire skill of 4 or higher.

The walkthrough tells you in advance which checks are coming up, so dress for the occasion.

Essential Skill Checks

Some white checks are necessary to progress the main quest. It is - theoretically - possible to lock yourself out of these, meaning that you have taken all the skill points you can in the skill being checked against and you fail the check anyway. There are a number of ways around this possibility, the most obvious of which is simply having a recent save. I could imagine that someone, somewhere might set themselves some sort of iron-man-cum-speedrun challenge where this is an actual rather than theoretical possibility; after all even if you have a 97% chance of success, there is a 1-in-1296 probability of failing the check twice. This isn't a sign of bad design, it just means that you've inflicted artificial difficulty on yourself and you have to treat it like a death in a one-save Iron Man difficulty game and go back to the start.

However, it is useful to know which checks are actually necessary rather than merely desirable:

  • Authority (17): Get Titus Hardie to talk to you
  • Rhetoric (17): Convince Titus he's being played
  • Logic (19): Present Titus with a convincing theory
  • Shivers (21): Figure out the location of the suspect.

You can get huge bonuses to these checks simply by playing the game. If you've attempted and failed a check, unlocking a new bonus resets it, allowing you to try again.

The Platinum trophy is fiddly and requires planning ahead. You'll be metagaming rather than role playing a lot of the time, because no fewer than eleven trophies require you to repeatedly give idiotic responses in conversation rather than talk like a sensible human being, or even a consistent idiot. You will have to do two playthroughs, both of which should be on Hardcore difficulty, because there are several mutually exclusive trophies, two of which require you to do (or not do) something at the start of the game and then require you to play right to the very end.

I have provided two walkthroughs which will unlock the Platinum trophy if you follow them both: a "good" walkthrough and a "bad" one.

The good walkthrough unlocks Goodest of the Good Cops , Recruit Detective Kim Kitsuragi , Fairweather t-500 Vitreous Enamel , Real Musor and Networthy Individual .

The bad walkthrough unlocks Recruit Kuuno de Ruyter , Baddest of the Bad Cops , Massive Torque Dork , Gluten-Free Topping Pie , The Icebreaker and What Body? Note that Massive Torque Dork and Gluten-Free Topping Pie require specific attribute and skill values and no better than average INT.

Other trophies can be unlocked during either playthrough, although I give guidance for most of these in the good walkthrough. The exception is the Truly Rabid "Traditionalist" trophy since being a fascist tends to make your partner dislike you. The "Jamais Vu" update added a bunch of new trophies and these are all covered in the good walkthrough as well.

How to Fast Travel in Disco Elysium: A Guide

How to Fast Travel in Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium is a sprawling, open-world RPG that can be a bit daunting to navigate. Luckily, there are a few ways to fast travel around the city of Revachol, making it easier to get to where you need to go.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to fast travel in Disco Elysium. We’ll cover all of the different methods, including using the subway, taxis, and the GIANT APE statue. We’ll also provide some tips on how to make the most of fast travel.

So whether you’re just starting out in Disco Elysium or you’re a seasoned pro, read on for all the information you need to know about fast travel.

Disco Elysium is a role-playing game set in a dystopian city. The game is open-world, and players can explore the city at their own pace. However, there are some areas of the city that are inaccessible until players have progressed further in the story. Fast travel can be used to quickly travel between different areas of the city, making it easier to access these areas.

There are two ways to fast travel in Disco Elysium: by using the tram or by using a taxi.

Using the Tram

The tram is the main mode of fast travel in Disco Elysium. It can be used to travel between different districts of the city. To use the tram, go to a tram stop and interact with the ticket machine. Select the destination district and pay the fare. The tram will arrive at your destination in a few minutes.

The tram is a convenient way to travel around the city, but it does have some limitations. First, the tram only runs between certain districts. Second, the tram is not always available. For example, the tram may not be running if there is a riot or a protest.

Using the Taxi

Taxis can also be used to fast travel in Disco Elysium. They are more expensive than the tram, but they can travel to more remote locations. To use a taxi, go to a taxi stand and interact with the driver. Tell the driver your destination and pay the fare. The taxi will take you to your destination in a few minutes.

Taxis are a good option for players who need to travel to a location that is not accessible by tram. However, taxis are more expensive than the tram, and they may not be available in all areas of the city.

Fast travel is a useful tool for players who want to quickly travel around the city of Disco Elysium. The tram and the taxi are two of the most convenient ways to fast travel. However, players should be aware of the limitations of each mode of transportation.

Additional Tips

  • Players can fast travel to any location that they have previously visited.
  • Players can fast travel while in combat, but they will be vulnerable to attack while they are doing so.
  • Players can fast travel while they are in conversation, but they will lose their progress in the conversation if they do so.
  • Players can fast travel while they are in a dream, but they will wake up at their original location if they do so.

The taxi is the most basic and convenient way to fast travel in Disco Elysium. You can call a taxi from anywhere in the city by interacting with a payphone. The taxi will take you to your destination for a small fee.

To call a taxi, simply interact with a payphone and select the “Call a Taxi” option. You will then be prompted to select a destination. Once you have selected a destination, the taxi will arrive shortly.

The cost of a taxi ride depends on the distance of your journey. However, it is usually a very affordable way to travel around the city.

The tram is another option for fast travel in Disco Elysium. The tram runs on a fixed route between the various districts of the city. You can board the tram at any tram stop.

To board the tram, simply interact with the tram stop and select the “Board Tram” option. You will then be prompted to select a destination. Once you have selected a destination, the tram will depart shortly.

The cost of a tram ride depends on the distance of your journey. However, it is usually a very affordable way to travel around the city.

Using the Subway

The subway is a fast and convenient way to travel between different districts of the city. However, it is only accessible after completing the “Subway” quest.

To use the subway, go to a subway station and interact with the ticket machine.

Select the destination station and pay the fare.

The subway will take you to your destination in a few minutes.

Using the Dreamworld

The Dreamworld is a special location that can be accessed by meditating. It is a safe place where you can rest and recover your health and sanity.

To access the Dreamworld, go to a meditation spot and interact with it.

You will then be transported to the Dreamworld.

You can stay in the Dreamworld for as long as you like. When you are ready to leave, simply meditate again.

These are just a few of the ways to fast travel in Disco Elysium. By using these methods, you can quickly and easily travel around the city and explore all that it has to offer.

In this guide, we will explore the secrets to fast travel in Disco Elysium, allowing you to move efficiently and unlock convenient transportation options. Say goodbye to long walks and hello to newfound convenience!

Understanding the World of Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium, developed by ZA/UM, is an intriguing role-playing game set in the fictional city of Revachol. As you delve into the game’s immersive storyline and intricate dialogue system, you’ll discover a richly detailed urban environment to explore. However, navigating this sprawling world can be time-consuming, especially when you’re backtracking or exploring different areas.

The Need for Fast Travel

Fast travel in Disco Elysium becomes a valuable tool, enabling you to quickly reach your desired destination without wasting precious in-game time. While the game doesn’t provide a traditional fast travel system, there are alternative methods and shortcuts you can utilize to minimize your travel time.

1. Mastering the Art of Running

One of the simplest ways to expedite your movement in Disco Elysium is to run. Hold down the Shift key (or the corresponding button on your controller) to make your character move at a faster pace. Running allows you to cover more ground swiftly, reducing the time spent traversing the game’s vast cityscape.

2. Utilizing Public Transportation

Revachol offers various forms of public transportation that can save you time and effort. Keep an eye out for bus stops and trams scattered throughout the city. Simply approach a bus stop or tram station and interact with it to board the vehicle. This allows you to quickly travel between different districts or important locations.

3. Discovering Sewer Entrances

As you explore the city, keep an eye out for sewer entrances. These hidden access points provide a secret network of shortcuts, enabling you to move swiftly between different parts of Revachol. Keep in mind that not all sewer entrances are immediately obvious, so be observant and explore your surroundings thoroughly.

4. Uncovering Underground Passages

In addition to sewers, Disco Elysium features underground passages that serve as shortcuts. These passages are often located beneath buildings or other structures, offering alternative routes to your destinations. Look for open manholes or entrances leading underground, providing you with a convenient means of fast travel.

5. Using Taxi Services

Another handy transportation option is utilizing the taxi services available in Disco Elysium. Taxi stands can be found throughout the city, marked by yellow signs with a taxi symbol. Interact with the stand, and you’ll have the option to choose your destination from a list. Taxis are an excellent way to quickly jump between different districts or key locations, bypassing lengthy walks.

6. Unlocking Future Fast Travel Features

As you progress through the game and uncover new clues, it’s possible to unlock additional fast travel features. Without spoiling the story, certain events and choices you make will gradually reveal shortcuts or other transportation options, further enhancing your ability to traverse Revachol quickly and conveniently.

While Disco Elysium does not feature a traditional fast travel system, the game offers a range of creative methods to expedite your movement. Whether you’re sprinting, riding public transportation, exploring hidden passages, or utilizing taxis, you’ll find numerous ways to reduce travel time and focus on the captivating narrative.

Remember, efficient travel is not always about rushing through the game. Disco Elysium encourages exploration, allowing you to uncover intriguing details and engage in immersive conversations along the way. So, make sure to strike a balance between fast travel and savoring the rich tapestry of Revachol.

Embrace these tips, employ them wisely, and enjoy your expeditions through the enthralling world of Disco Elysium. Happy travels, detective!
