How to File a Travel Insurance Claim

W hen it comes to travel, there are generally two types of people: people who cannot travel as it is too expensive and those who budget $4,000 per year for vacations, according to Forbes. Travel is costly, so people often purchase travel insurance to safeguard their financial investment from unforeseen events like illnesses, luggage delays, personal emergencies, and more.

When policyholders pay honest money for an insurance policy to offer protection, they want to be able to reap the benefits of the travel insurance claim. If your travel insurance company has denied payment, our tips on how to properly file a travel insurance claim may be helpful.

Why Buy Travelers Insurance?

Travel is generally less stressful with vacation insurance — it is packaged as a wise investment that can protect you against financial losses due to unexpected events. For instance, the U.S. State Department highly recommends international travel trip insurance as Medicare and Medicaid often do not cover overseas medical costs.

The travel insurance premium is relatively small compared to the non-refundable trip costs you could lose in a bad situation. It is particularly worth it if your trip involves non-refundable costs, international travel, or travel to a remote area with limited healthcare facilities or regions prone to natural disasters.

Some of the primary reasons people buy trip insurance are to help offset:

  • Emergency medical services and treatment
  • Cancellations due to a sudden illness or serious health condition
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Loss of a friend or family member
  • Compromised destinations
  • Delayed or lost luggage
  • Trip interruption or cancellation

What Is Not Covered By Travel Insurance?

The best insurance policies cover basic and common travel risks and bundle different coverage types related to trip cancellation, medical issues, luggage or trip delays, and more. Travel insurance is not meant to cover all foreseeable events, and every policy will address exclusions differently. Examples of potential limitations are:

  • Tropical storms, hurricanes, and other dangerous weather conditions
  • Certain medical issues
  • Acts of war
  • High-risk behavior involving drugs, unlawful acts, or riots
  • Government-imposed restrictions

Travel insurance claims submitted without proper documentation or cancellation for reasons not covered by your travel policy are surefire ways to prevent coverage and reimbursement. This is why it is helpful to understand travel insurance coverage properly and take appropriate actions before assuming foul play.

Can You Cancel Travel Insurance and Get a Refund?

Most travel insurance carriers allow refunds, depending on when a policy is canceled and if there is a money-back guarantee. Most insurers ask that the policy be revoked during the review period outlined in the contract terms to qualify for a complete travel insurance refund. If the review period has passed, then policyholders might be eligible for a partial refund or not qualify for one at all.

What To Do if a Travel Insurance Claim Is Denied

If your travel insurance claim submitted for medical reasons, delays, cancellations, or any other reason was denied by your insurer, then remember that you have options. Both denials and rejections may happen for valid as well as unethical reasons. An insurance claim denial is not the end of the road; you can dig deeper to figure out whether you can still be reimbursed under your insurance.

Travel insurance claims are routinely denied when policyholders make common mistakes in their claim forms, or they mistakenly assume their policy covers their specific situation. Good faith denials happen when policyholders do not fill out their travel insurance claim form correctly, do not submit the right documents, or do not include info like contact details for follow-up questions.

In some cases, travel insurance companies may wrongly deny claims and stall the claims process. For instance, they might fail to investigate the claim or conduct proper due diligence. In such scenarios, it is advisable that policyholders adjust and resubmit their insurance claim, appeal the denial, or pursue legal action if insurers continue to illegally hold their payout.

How To Appeal a Travel Insurance Claim: 4 Steps

The travel insurance claim appeal process allows policyholders to ask the insurer to reconsider its decision. When appealing their travel insurance claim, policyholders must:

  • Carefully Review the Denial Letter: Review the specific reasons for the denial to determine your next steps. Cross-check the reasons stated with your policy documents, additional emails, and other papers.
  • Review Your Policy: Review the terms of your travel insurance policy and pay attention to disclaimers, damage limits, filing time limits, and submission requirements.
  • Reach Out for Assistance: After carefully reviewing your policy, if you find the denial letter and policy terms do not line up, contact an insurance legal expert with experience in handling travel insurance claims for help.
  • Gather Documentation and Keep Careful Records: Maintain communication records with your insurer, copies of denial letters, and other documentation regarding your claim.

How To Write a Travel Insurance Claim Letter

Sometimes, travelers have to file a trip insurance claim when their vacation does not go according to the plan. A travel insurance claim letter is a formal piece of communication between you and your insurance agency. Its purpose is to ask for reimbursement for covered damages or losses under the travel insurance policy. Therefore, it is important to craft a professional and detailed claim letter to increase your chances of a favorable resolution.

A claim letter should include the following information:

  • Introduce Yourself. Include all relevant information of the person appealing (such as the policy number and contact information).
  • Address the Denial. Summarize the date you received the letter and why the denial was made. Do not leave out any important details.
  • Point Out the Error. Explain why you do not agree with the claims denial, based on your policy and pertinent information.
  • Attach Extra Documents. Include all other documents supporting your trip insurance claim, such as photos, additional correspondence, transcripts of phone calls, etc.

How Long Does It Take To Get Reimbursed From Insurance?

Travel insurance companies generally process most claims within a few weeks. Sometimes, the insurance claims process office might have follow-up questions, thereby increasing the time you can expect to hear back. However, if you feel that your insurance claim is taking months to resolve without a proper reason, you should speak to an experienced insurance dispute lawyer. While every situation is different, policyholders should always keep careful and consistent notes as it will help them take informed legal action if necessary.

Travel Insurance Claims Advice on Documentation

You must be thorough with your documentation to enhance your chance of successful recovery. When you file a trip claim, your insurer will more likely refund travel insurance when you include the following information in your claim submission:

  • Lost Luggage: Make a list of what was lost, along with the details and cost of each lost item.
  • Job Loss: Request that your previous employer send you a notarized letter on company letterhead in the case of a trip cancellation due to job loss.
  • Medical Emergency: Include detailed medical records in your claim if a health emergency kept you from traveling.
  • Canceled/Delayed Flight: If you could not attend your trip because the flight was canceled or delayed, provide proof such as an email that relays the reasons (mechanical issues, weather, etc.).
  • Receipts for Delayed Flights: You might want to keep receipts for necessary expenses incurred due to delays, like hotel stays, transportation costs, meals, and personal necessities.
  • Police Reports: These reports can help substantiate claims made for stolen items or car troubles.
  • Other Reports: You may include tickets for unused flights or excursions in your insurance claim.

Has a Formal Complaint Been Filed Against the Travel Supplier?

Formal complaints against travel suppliers are helpful in legal cases dealing with similar situations. The Van Rossem v. Penney Travel Service (April 15, 1985) case exemplifies travel insurance gone wrong.

In this case, a newlywed couple arranged a honeymoon trip with travel agent Penney Travel. The agent used a wholesaler, Lotus Tours, to book the reservation without the couple's knowledge. Lotus Tours abruptly went bankrupt before booking the client's reservation with SANDLES, which remained unpaid. When the case came before the court, the judge noted that "an agent who makes the contract in his own name for an undisclosed principal is liable as a principal." Here, the defendant had failed to disclose the identity of Lotus Tours, and so, it was responsible as the principal. The couple had paid $2,059 in advance. The judge awarded them reimbursement of $1,312, plus costs and disbursements.

In another lawsuit, Touhey v. Trans National Travel , a travel agent did not check to see if the hotel a client had booked was duly constructed. The plaintiff-client was awarded $25,000 in special damages because of the mistake.

What Are Bad Faith Insurance Practices?

Bad faith insurance refers to unethical insurance practices used by an insurer to delay, deny, or lowball policyholders. Examples of bad faith insurance practices include:

  • Misrepresenting contract language to prevent a payout
  • Failing to disclose policy limitations and exclusions to policyholders
  • Making unreasonable demands, like excessive paperwork requests to prove a covered loss

Sometimes, only a seasoned insurance dispute lawyer who regularly deals with contract breaches and bad faith claims can identify honest errors from serious red flags and help a policyholder get paid their due.

How to File a Travel Insurance Claim: A Summary

Travelers usually plan their vacations down to the last detail. Travel insurance is a buffer for unplanned curveballs that can derail even the most meticulous plans, such as medical emergencies or misplaced luggage.

Insurance companies are explicit about what travel mishaps or unexpected events they will or will not cover, which is why it is crucial to understand policy limitations and how to properly file a travel insurance claim.

As a final snapshot, the key steps to filing a travel insurance claim include:

  • Reviewing policy terms and exclusions.
  • Gathering necessary documentation based on submission requirements.
  • Submitting your claim according to the insurer's timing and filing guidelines.
  • Filing an appeal if an insurance claim is wrongly denied.
  • Consulting an experienced insurance dispute lawyer to assist with an intentionally stalled, denied, or undervalued claim.

Travel insurance claims can become challenging, depending on the situation and response from your insurer. When small bumps in the road become permanent roadblocks, it is helpful to know that qualified travel insurance claims attorneys are available to help frustrated policyholders recover their losses.

Travelers' profit jumps on investment gains, underwriting strength.

April 17 (Reuters) - Travelers Companies' first-quarter profit rose 13%, driven by higher investment income and strong underwriting that offset a hit from a jump in catastrophe losses, the insurance bellwether said on Wednesday.

Insurers are reaping the benefits of firming hopes of a soft landing, and wage growth in a still-tight labor market that has ensured job security.

Individuals and businesses are reviving spending on their insurance policies, allowing insurers to attract and retain clients despite higher prices in some cases.

Renewal premium - the estimated average premium on renewing policies - was 10.6% higher in the reported quarter from a year earlier in the business insurance unit, Travelers' biggest, while growth in personal insurance was driven by higher prices, the company said.

Underwriting gains jumped 57% to $577 million, while net investment income rose about 28% to $846 million, thanks to a string of interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve to curb inflation, the company said.

Catastrophe losses, net of reinsurance, were up at $712 million from $535 million a year earlier, due to severe wind and hail storms in the central and eastern regions of the United States.

Global insured losses from natural catastrophes in the first quarter were estimated to be $20 billion, heavily driven by storm activity in the United States, according to a report by reinsurance broker Gallagher Re.

The company's core income rose to $1.1 billion, or $4.69 per share, for the three months ended March 31, compared with $970 million, or $4.11 per share, a year earlier.

Its underlying combined ratio also improved to 87.7%, compared with 90.6% a year earlier. A ratio below 100% means the insurer earned more in premiums than it paid out in claims.

Travelers' shares have gained 17% this year compared with a near 19% jump in the S&P 500 Property & Casualty Insurance Index . (Reporting by Niket Nishant in Bengaluru; Editing by Shinjini Ganguli)

How to change or cancel an American Airlines flight

American Airlines Boeing 777-300ER LAX

Editor's Note

Planning a vacation can take a tremendous amount of time and energy. When things go wrong, and you need to change or cancel your plans, will it be easy to do so?

Thankfully, changing and canceling American Airlines flights is incredibly easy. Over the past few years, the airline has eliminated most of the fees associated with changing or canceling many types of tickets.

In this guide, we'll help you better understand American Airlines' cancellation policy, change policy and refund policy.

American Airlines' cancellation policy

travellers insurance email

If you purchased your ticket directly, American Airlines' cancellation policy is pretty straightforward. There are a few key points to consider:

  • All tickets are fully refundable within the first 24 hours after booking as long as your departure date is more than two days in the future.
  • Nonrefundable tickets can be changed or canceled without a fee, but you won't receive a refund. Instead, you'll receive a travel credit to use on another flight.
  • Basic economy fares are the only fares that cannot be changed once booked. However, with recent policy changes , you can cancel the flight by paying a fee. Similar to other nonrefundable tickets purchased, you'll receive a refund in the form of a travel credit.
  • You can refund fully refundable tickets at any time to the original payment method.
  • You can cancel award tickets and redeposit the miles you used without a fee.

As you can see, the current American Airlines cancellation policy is extremely customer-friendly. Except for basic economy and some tickets that originate outside of North and South America, you won't have to worry about jumping through hoops or losing the entire value of your ticket. Also, when changing a nonrefundable ticket, you'll receive a travel credit for any reduction in fare. For example, if you change from a $500 ticket to a $300 ticket, you'll receive a travel voucher for $200 to use on a future ticket.

To dive into the basic economy flight cancellation policy, you can now cancel a basic economy fare. Previously, these fare types could not be changed. But, there are some caveats to be aware of. Firstly, you must be an AAdvantage member — and your number must be tied to your reservation. You also must have booked directly with American Airlines, be flying on an American Airlines-marketed and -operated flight, and be traveling within the 50 U.S. states. While you'll receive the the refund in the form of a travel credit, there's a cancellation fee of $99. This means if your flight costs $200, you'll end up with a credit of $101.

Additionally, there are a few different expiration dates when it comes to receiving a travel credit from canceling or changing an American Airlines flight. AAdvantage members will receive a credit that expires one year from the date the credit is issued, while nonmembers only have six months to use the credit (for credits issued on or after April 2, 2024). Enrolling in the AAdvantage membership program is free, so there's absolutely no reason not to be a member — and have your credit valid for a full year.

How to cancel an American Airlines flight

The steps to cancel an American Airlines flight on paid and award tickets are now virtually identical. Once you log in to your American Airlines account , click on the "Your trips" link in the menu:

From your list of upcoming trips, select the one you'd like to cancel:

Select "Cancel trip":

Then, confirm your cancellation:

travellers insurance email

American Airlines should automatically reinstate your miles for award tickets, and the airline should automatically issue a travel voucher for paid tickets. The taxes and fees paid on award tickets should all be returned to the credit card used to pay. However, based on personal experience, double-check to ensure you receive the credit. If, by some chance, it gets refunded as a travel credit, you'll need to call American Airlines.

How to change an American Airlines flight

Changing an American Airlines flight online is easy. You can also contact American Airlines via phone to change your flight. However, if you booked a web special fare with miles, those award flights can't usually be changed; you'll instead have to cancel and rebook. Here are the steps to change a flight:

Once you've pulled up your trip in your account online, select the "Change trip" button:

travellers insurance email

From there, click the box labeled "Yes, I want to change this flight," and search for new flights:

travellers insurance email

Select a new flight from the options given:

travellers insurance email

Then, American Airlines will display the new itinerary as well as whether you owe additional funds or are entitled to a credit:

travellers insurance email

If you're entitled to a travel credit, American Airlines will display this as a "Refund Amount." In almost all cases, that refund will be issued as a travel credit instead of a refund to your original payment method.

travellers insurance email

Once you've confirmed your new itinerary, you should receive an email from American Airlines with the travel credit to use on a future flight.

American Airlines' refund policy

American Airlines' refund policy is pretty straightforward but fairly restrictive.

Refundable tickets can be refunded to the original payment method at any time before departure. If you purchased the ticket directly from American Airlines, you can request a refund on the American Airlines website . But if you purchased your ticket from a travel agent, whether a traditional travel agent or an online travel agency such as Expedia, you'll need to contact them directly. For basic economy fares, you'll need to be an American Airlines AAdvantage member.

Nonrefundable tickets are only eligible for a refund more than 24 hours after purchase if one of the following applies:

  • A schedule change of more than four hours
  • Death of the passenger or a traveling companion
  • Military orders for the passenger

Based on personal experience, if there's a schedule change (one less than four hours), American Airlines is very flexible with allowing you to change to a new flight — on the same day of travel or even the day before or after.

Bottom line

Since American allows extra flexibility for changing or canceling a flight, you should be able to book without worrying about losing money or your miles.

And because American doesn't charge anything to redeposit miles, you should consider jumping on a great award booking as soon as you see it. You can always get those miles back without penalty if your plans change before departure.

Figo pet insurance offers aggressive pet insurance coverage options to ensure your pet gets the veterinary care they need in an emergency. Figo offers easy online quotes, and Costco members qualify for discounts on its pet insurance plans.

Many pet insurance providers will only insure pets younger than 14. Insurers may put an age cap on eligibility because pets, like humans, tend to develop health conditions as they age. However, Figo Pet Insurance will insure your furry friend, regardless of age. Whatever plan you consider, understand pet insurance companies will not cover preexisting conditions . For dogs or cats with a history of allergies, cancer, diabetes, or other conditions, this would still leave pet parents on the hook for related bills if diagnosed before buying your plan.

Figo offers three plans: the Essential plan, the Preferred plan, and the Unlimited plan. This insurer provides ample coverage choices to customize your policy based on your pet's needs and your budget.

Unfortunately, Figo doesn't sell a basic, accident-only plan, which is generally cheaper than an accident-illness or wellness program. Additionally, while it reimburses you, you must pay your vet bills upfront. Many pet parents resolve this issue using services like CareCredit, which can be paid off after completing the claim. If you're interested in Figo, we recommend Costco members go through the retail giant's partnership with Figo as you get 15% off standard premiums.

ASPCA pet insurance is not sold or underwritten by the ASPCA. However, the ASPCA collects royalties on sales made to support its operations and aid homeless pets.

Unfortunately, all pet insurance providers exclude preexisting conditions from coverage. This is because pet insurance companies have to mediate risk to keep premiums low for everyone. However, several companies will cover preexisting conditions if your pet has been symptom- and treatment-free for some time. ASPCA Pet Insurance is one of those providers.

ASPCA pet insurance will cover curable preexisting conditions if your cat, dog, and even horses if your pet has been symptom-free for over 180 days (excluding ligament and knee conditions).

With ASPCA pet insurance, you choose an accident-only, accident and illness, and preventative care plan. ASPCA pet insurance's comprehensive programs cover alternative therapies, behavioral issues, and congenital and hereditary conditions. The provider even covers pet microchipping. When going through the quoting process online, we were told we must speak to a live representative to obtain a quote for unlimited annual coverage.

Best for Alternative Therapy: Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance provided by ACE American Insurance Company Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Unlimited coverage options available
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Average claims processing time of 2 days
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Low deductible options

  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Coverage may decrease with age
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Rates may be higher than some competitors

Healthy Paws offers comprehensive and affordable pet insurance plans with unlimited coverage, high reimbursement options, and more. These features earned it a spot on our guide to the best pet insurance. However, Healthy Paws does not cover preventative care, encouraging pet parents to budget for known annual costs.

Only a few providers offer alternative medicine if you prefer to take the holistic and herbal route when seeking treatment for your pet. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance offers a comprehensive list of non-invasive forms of therapy, including acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physical therapy, laser therapy, and massage care, as long as a licensed veterinarian provides the treatment.

The trade-off, however, is Healthy Paws won't cover preventative and wellness care. Its site specifies Healthy Paws believes wellness costs can be planned for. For example, you expect to do a yearly exam and get updated vaccines, and even if you save a little bit each month, you can plan accordingly. However, accidents and severe chronic illnesses are difficult to plan for, and costs are frequently unreasonable. So Healthy Paws focuses on the most significant area of need it sees.

  • Annual coverage options: Unlimited
  • Reimbursement options: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%
  • Deductible options: $50, $100, $250, $500, $750, $1,000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $37; Cats - $18

Best for Exotic Pets: Nationwide Pet Insurance

Finding cheap pet insurance may be challenging if you have an exotic pet like a bird, rabbit, or reptile. Nationwide Pet Insurance is currently the only pet insurance company to offer wide-reaching coverage for many exotic pets. Other companies offer "discount plans," much like human prescription discount plans. However, you'd have to work with specific vets, and coverage would be specific to the treatment provided.

Nationwide pet insurance offers three pet insurance plans:

  • Major Medical (accident and illness plan)
  • Whole Pet (more comprehensive accident and illness plan)
  • A wellness plan

Nationwide offers various conditions in its plans. However, the coverage is set. Nationwide's sample accident and illness policy broke down many potential diagnoses with primary and secondary diagnoses allowances. Ultimately, each buyer will receive a policy breakdown. However, Nationwide is a more expensive pet insurance provider with limited flexibility.

  • Annual coverage options: Per condition
  • Reimbursement options: 50%, 70%, 90%
  • Deductible options: $250
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $35; Cats - $14

Best for Unlimited Coverage: Trupanion Pet Insurance

Trupanion Pet Insurance is one of the pricier insurers on this list. Also, it offers a limited selection of policy options. However, if you're looking for a plan with unlimited coverage, Trupanion may be your winner. Unfortunately, we've all heard of the unexpected accident or illness in an otherwise healthy pet calling for emergency care.

Some emergency surgeries can easily surpass $20,000, and you might be on the hook for follow-up care, rehab, and even further surgeries. These are the times when unlimited care could be the saving grace to save your furry friend.

Trupanion offers deductibles ranging from $0 to $1,000. What's unique about this insurer is you'll only have to pay the deductible once per condition. For example, say your pet develops an illness requiring ongoing treatment. While most insurers will need you to pay a deductible yearly, you'll only have to pay your deductible once when the condition appears, potentially saving you money. This is handy for chronic conditions like allergies, diabetes, and cancer.

  • Reimbursement options: 90%
  • Deductible options: $0 to $1000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $50; Cats - $22

Read our Trupanion Pet Insurance review here.

We review a company based on several benchmarks and compare it against the industry standard.

  • Affordability: We consider an insurer cheap if it meets or is below the industry average premiums. We also compare the prices against its competitors.
  • Policy customization: We look at the breadth of an insurer's policy options. Policy options include the number of annual coverages, deductibles, and reimbursement options. The price is not the only determining factor if you compare a $50 for unlimited coverage with 80% reimbursement with a $10 policy with a $5,000 annual cap.
  • Waiting period: A waiting period is the time between purchasing a policy and when coverage kicks in. The average waiting period for accident coverage is three days, and fourteen days for illness coverage. However, waiting periods for genetic conditions and serious illnesses could last a year.
  • Types of policies available: The best pet insurance companies typically offer three types of plans: accident-only, accident-illness, and wellness plans. We look through an insurer's website to determine if it sells some variation of those three plans.
  • Exclusions: Pets come in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, insurance companies will exclude some pets from coverage, like older pets or even those with curable preexisting conditions.
  • Company offerings: We look at the extensiveness of a company's policies. Some insurers offer coverage for microchipping, alternative medicine, and other unique conditions.

We go into further detail in our insurance rating methodology .

Which dog breed qualifies for the cheapest pet insurance?

Small, spayed, female mixed-breed dogs are the cheapest to insure, according to North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA).

How much is a reasonable deductible for pet insurance?

Consider your needs before choosing a deductible. Choosing a high deductible may lower your monthly premiums. However, to start your coverage as soon as possible, consider choosing a low deductible, like $100 to $500.

When should you use pet insurance?

You'll decide what coverage you're willing to pay for upfront. However, whenever you have a qualifying claim, you should file a claim with your pet insurance provider. Insurance providers may have a time limit on claims, and you have to fulfill your annual deductible before full coverage will kick in.

What is the cheapest pet insurance?

Pets Best pet insurance costs an average of $20 for dogs and $12 for cats, the lowest prices among its competitors. Prices will vary based on your pet's age and breed.
