The 10 Best Architectural Digest Celebrity House Tours on YouTube

my home tour youtube

Architectural Digest's YouTube channel, and its "Open Door" series in particular, is one of life's greatest gifts. It filled the void that MTV cribs left in its wake when the series ended in 2010... and we're huge fans.

Because it's not every day we real estate addicts get to see behind the closed doors of luxurious, extravagant, and quirky celebrity homes. From a converted windmill in the Hamptons and a duplex penthouse apartment at the Plaza Hotel in NYC to the mansions of the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles , each home on this list will leave you both in awe and filled with inspiration.

These are the top 10 best Architectural Digest celebrity house tours...

1. robert downey jr..

First up we have Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey's converted windmill abode. This is not your run-of-the-mill (see what we did there?) Hamptons summer home, it was designed by renowned New York City firm Fox-Nahem Associates who transformed the late-19th century windmill into a charming and very private East Hampton masterpiece with stunning grounds. The highlight? Susan's office in the very top of the windmill is the ideal WFH situation and we couldn't be more jealous.

In this very humorous home tour we get to see everything from Robert's art projects and clutter closets to their table-side nap zone and numerous cats. If you're in the mood for a chuckle, look no further.

2. Dakota Johnson

If you love all things mid-century modern, this is the celebrity home tour for you.

Architectural Digest kindly bring us inside the beautiful home of movie star Dakota Johnson. Formerly the home of director Ryan Murphy, Dakota purchased the super private Hollywood Hills home for $3.55 million in 2016. Features of envy include beautiful crushed mohair vintage sofas, her cozy office with book wall, gorgeous green kitchen, and backyard oasis complete with citrus trees, a heated swimming pool, and an elevated bamboo-sheltered hot tub area.

There isn't an inch of this lush but humble abode that we don't love.

3. Wiz Khalifa

This episode of "Open Door" is currently the most viewed of all time with 43 million views. It brings us inside Wiz Khalifa's $4.6 million mansion and recording studio in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles.

The rapper's super cool pad features a heated infinity pool with incredible views, a games room with a dab AND booze bar, an underground recording studio, weed-themed photo wall, and a fleet of killer cars. Proof that this man is living the dream.

4. Cara and Poppy Delevigne

You may never find more personality in a home thanks to the Delevigne sisters' jungle-inspired home in Los Angeles.

Nicolò Bini of Line Architecture told Architectural Digest of the home, “I wanted to create a true L.A. moment for them, with nods to California midcentury modern, Laurel Canyon bohemia, Beverly Hills swank, surfing culture, and a little Mexico. Then we tied all that in with Cara and Poppy’s Englishness to give the house another layer of Delevingne charm.” The interior of this home is one-of-a-kind, no doubt about it.

Header image credit: Architectural Digest / Trevor Tondro

Over in Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles , you'll find producer and DJ Zedd's $16 million mansion.

Highlights of this Architectural Digest "Open Door" episode include the incredible canyon and hill views, indoor trees, an art gallery, and a Skittle machine. Spanning a whopping 9,500 square feet, this mansion even has its own detached studio and gym and will soon have a separate "guest-house-bowling-alley-complex". Casual...

You can understand why this is the second most viewed video on Architectural Digest's YouTube with a staggering 43 million views.

6. Kendall Jenner

Next up we have supermodel and Kardashian clan member Kendall Jenner whose serene Los Angeles home was designed by Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Waldo Fernandez. The interior of the home blends super tasteful elements and earthy shades with fun, unexpected pops of color and a calm, peaceful atmosphere.

Keep an eye out for Kendall's incredible art collection including a signature James Turrell ovoid wall sculpture as well as her incredible fireplace, beautiful bar, art studio, dream-worthy chef's kitchen, gold bathtub, glam room, and so much more.

7. J Balvin

Travel with us to Colombia for this next "Open Door" episode where we get to explore superstar J Balvin's tranquil home. Inspired by Japan aesthetics and minimalism, the house features floor-to-ceiling windows that bring nature indoors. The open plan kitchen and living room open up to the great outdoors, with a wonderful indoor / outdoor flow. The pool area is beyond dream-worthy and is surrounded by lush and tropical greenery and bonsai trees.

The minimalism and neutral color palette changes greatly when you enter J Balvin's walk-in closet where  over 850 pairs of sneaker line the walls in explosions of color. The man loves his shoes...

8. Hilary Duff

Next we'll enjoy a tour of Hilary Duff's vibrant, colorful, and cheerful family home in Los Angeles . A self-confessed home renovation addict, Hilary has renovated this house twice in the last eight years. The latest one has resulted in a quirky and somewhat eccentric aesthetic with a focus on family, livability, and large spaces to spend time in with beautiful art and tasteful features throughout.

The highlight of this home tour has got to be the chicken coop out in the back yard.

9. Tommy Hilfiger

Journey back to New York with us now for what may be the most luxurious and opulent home on this list. Legendary fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and his wife Dee reportedly purchased this duplex penthouse apartment at the Plaza Hotel for $25.5 million in 2008 (they've since sold it for $31 million, although originally listed it for $80 million).

This Plaza apartment overlooks Central Park, with incredible views of the city as far as the eye can see. This particular unit steeped in history having once hosted the likes of The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, and many more iconic figures. You won't find another apartment like this in New York City.

BROWSE:  Homes for sale in New York here.

10. Aaron Paul

Come check out Aaron Paul's custom wood and stone Idaho home. Despite the house being enormous, it has a very cozy, almost cabin-like vibe to it, tucked away in the snowy mountains and surrounded by trees and lakes. Just watching this home tour will make you feel warm 'n' fuzzy inside.

With the help of interior designer Jake Arnold and Pearson Design Group, the Pauls purchased and used the wood from three 120-year-old barns to build the house from scratch. Drool over the cathedral ceilings, vast living spaces, stone bathrooms, spacious bedrooms, and an incredible floor-to-ceiling fireplace.

Plus, a bonus one, but a must-watch nonetheless.

11. Naomi Campbell

Last but not least, we just haaad to include icon Naomi Campbell's Kenya compound and airy villa. On the coast of the Indian Ocean, in the tranquil seaside town of Malindi, lies this tranquil and "very calming place".

From the indoor/outdoor flow and two pools, to the restaurant-like outdoor dining area and on-site spa - we've never seen anything quite like this one... take a look for yourself.

MY HOME TOUR

That Scandinavian Feeling Home Tour bedroom bedsidetable details

Welcome into my home!

I recently did a photoshoot of my apartment and it made me realise that I have never shown it fully here on the blog, so it was about time I invite you in to see more. You might have already seen snippets here and there both on the blog and over on Instagram, but now I will explain a bit more about each room and how I created my Scandinavian home here in Italy.

My home is all about That Scandinavian Feeling , so it tells the story of who I am. It is inspired by my Scandinavian heritage as well as hygge – I would say my home is cozy and homely but also modern, minimal, bright and calm. I have chosen a soft colour palette which runs thought the whole space, with lots of white surfaces as well as light wood accents. My fiancé and I (and our dog) are homebodies and love being cozy, so the design style of our home is a reflection of that. Because like I always say: “home is the best feeling”…

The kitchen is my favourite room. We focused a lot on creating our dream kitchen when we bought this home and it has become just that. It now is the heart of the home. The kitchen is minimal and classic, but I knew I wanted it to be bit different than the normal white kitchen. Instead we went for pale grey doors, a marble style top and gold details such as the knobs and faucet. Since it is so big we didn’t have the need for over-head cabinets and instead put a long open shelf which tied the space all together nicely.

I love the colour we chose for the doors – the Veddinge cabinets from Ikea. These grey smooth, sleek doors brings a soft and modern yet unique expression to the kitchen. Even though they are grey, it seems to change its appearance throughout the day as you can see from my photos. Sometimes the colour seems more blueish and cold, other times it has a warmer tone to it.

That Scandinavian Feeling Home Tour kitchen

One of the things I was very excited about in our new home was this PH 5 lamp designed by Poul Henningsen – a true Scandinavian classic! This exact one used to hang in my parent’s kitchen when I grew up so it brings lots of lovely memories around the dinner table. When my mum came to visit to help me unpack she took it with her all the way from Norway and now it is finally up in our kitchen in Italy. It is all about those little things that help make a home feel special, don’t you think?

Since we like to stay home in the evenings, we also have a little bar area in the kitchen. The bar cabinet is quite a special piece – we met in a bar in London so it reminds me of that.

Read my post our new Nordic kitchen plans to see a moodboard and links to everything.

Our bedroom is calm, minimal and a place I feel serene and relaxed in. For me, a big part when planning our home was to make sure every room was utilised to the fullest and to have enough storage throughout the home to keep it clutter-free. In the bedroom we did some clever solutions, like for instance creating a wardrobe space with a half wall behind the bed as well as having a bed with storage underneath.

When we planned the half wall behind the bed we knew we wanted it to be a feature in the room, so we decided on painting it a calming shade of blue green which to me fits perfect in a bedroom. The colour is based on Farrow & Ball ‘oval room blue no. 85’ but our builders made their own mix. We also decided to create a little build-in shelf on the wall which makes it easy to rotate artwork or style with different design items. It is also the prefect size for our little projector, so when we want to have a cozy evening at home the room transforms into a home cinema. The wall opposite is big and white, so we do not need any canvas to project on.

That Scandinavian Feeling Home Tour bedroom bed dog

If you want to read more about the wardrobe we have behind the bed, check out my post our new Platsa wardrobe from IKEA .

The livingroom is probably the room I spend most of my time in. It has my little desk area in one corner where I work from and write these blogposts during the day, and the sofa where we spend most evenings chilling and watching tv. The sofa corner is my favourite little spot – I call it my hyggekrok which is the place you like to sit and enjoy hygge moments. Along the wall we have a low bookshelf, and behind the sofa a long picture ledge – both great areas for styling and easy to change depending on my mood. The tv is mounted on the wall for a simple and clean look.

Around the space, I have sentimental items and decor which reminds me of my home, my family and friends or happy moments. I love that each item tells a story and help to make our house feel like home. A recent addition was a cozy rug which helps to separate the sofa area from the desk area and creates a hygge feeling.

To understand more about the layout and space, read my article with the before & after floorplans of our home .

You might miss one room, and that is right! The bathroom was one of the rooms we did not renovate when me bought this home but it is one I am currently tackling (along with our laundry room). So as soon as it is finished, I will share the makeover with you here. But you know how it is… a home will never feel fully finished so there might be future changes along the way.

Hi Ingrid, what a beautiful home. Thank you for sharing the details. Although I am in the UK I am interested to know where you got your sofa from, just in case I can get it! Thanks, Tara.

Hi Tara! Thank you so much, the sofa is actually from Ikea so you will be able to get it also in UK :) The name is Vimle and you can get it in different colours too.

Hi, Love your design aesthetics. Very inspirational. I’m a Scandinavian living in the States so I can relate to living abroad and that sometimes staying true to your roots to be somewhat a bittersweet thing. You’ve done a great job making your home cozy and inviting. My home is still in the works as years ago we bought a home that was a gut job and then we had two kids during. Life happened. I’ve been looking for a bar cabinet such as yours (unrelated to my previous line about the remodel and kids. Ha.) I was actually thinking of getting something similar for our bedroom. I’d appreciate if you could share where you found it from? Thanks!

Thank you for sharing. I was considering doing something similar in my living room with a shelving unit and the couch next to each other. Do you find it feels somewhat crowded with the couch next to the shelving unit like that? Or does the minimalist decoration on the shelves directly next to the couch help alleviate that feeling?

Thank you Will! For me it doesn’t feel too crowded but it is like you say – I keep the shelving unit quite minimal and it might feel more crowded if it was fuller. I find it very handy to have the shelf there, because in the evening if I have a mug of tea or a glass of wine while sitting in my cozy corner, I can out it on the shelf instead of leaning over to the coffee table :)

Hi I’m using the same grey cabinets for our new kitchen and I was wondering which white you have used for the walls? I’t seems to go great with the veddige-grey. Thanks Sofia

Hi Sofia! Thank you, hope you will enjoy your kitchen too. To be honest I am not really sure what the white paint used is – our builders just picked one that fitted with the white on the rest of the walls in the home..

What a beautiful house!! I love your pictures!! Truly stunning!!

Thank you so much Adele!

Thank you for sharing! I’ve just recently found your blog and am drawing so much inspiration from it. Can you tell me the details of the frame on the dresser in the bedroom? Thank you!

Thank you Amy, so glad you like my blog! The frame is a customised ‘Twenty five square’ frame from the Little Square Gallery – I have linked it in this post: http://www.thatscandinavianfeeling.com/interior/new-details-in-our-cozy-and-calm-bedroom

Hello! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home. Can I ask where the combination shelf/table is from? Your work area in your living room?

Hi Kara-Anne! Sorry for my delayed response – it is from String Furniture and is their classic storage solution which can be customised in so many great ways.

House Beautiful's Most Popular Home Tours of 2021, According to Instagram

From a cool cocktail and storage nook in Atlanta to a country superstar's sweet nursery, these spectacular snapshots raked in the most likes on our feed.

More surprising picks include a mint-chocolate-chip-colored cabana on Long Island, a cozy baby’s room in Nashville, and an elegant New England foyer.

The quaint cocktail nook of this colorful Atlanta home by Melanie Turner racked up the most nods by a landslide.

“It’s probably the most thoughtful project we’ve ever worked on,” the designer tells House Beautiful . “A young family, a historic house, heirlooms, and playfulness all in one.”

Exposed brick floors lend this Texas kitchen reimagined by designer Marie Flanigan and her associate, Ashlee Garner, its rustic European look.

“The overall aesthetic is one that’s layered and transitional with an underbelly of tradition,” Flanigan says of the Houston home .

Tour the home here

Just off the mudroom of this Hamptons family retreat by Lauren Wills lies a light-filled cabana replete with everything you need for a lazy afternoon on the beach.

The cheery space showcases no-fuss cement floors that make for easy cleanup.

When it came to revamping her longtime abode in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, designer Liz Caan repurposed a lot of pieces and strategically filled the historic house with whimsical art and antiques.

“I think the beauty of this home is that it's constantly evolving," she says.

Want beautiful homes? We’ve got plenty. Let’s swoon over them together.

Instagrammers swooned over this darling nursery , thoughtfully put together by Nashville-based designer April Tomlin for her close friend Lauren Akins (who happens to be married to country superstar Thomas Rhett).

"It is a real and happy home," Tomlin enthuses. "I love how much love it holds."

Liz Caan turned heads once again with this shot of her family home’s incredible kitchen , which features an enviable walk-in pantry.

“I wanted this kitchen to have some soul and wanted to be surrounded by things I love made by people I love,” she reveals.

The English-inspired kitchen and servery of this Nova Scotia new build by Philip Mitchell boasts reclaimed antique wood floors, handcrafted cabinetry, and ultradurable surfaces.

“Every drawer is divided to hold something specific, whether it’s utensils or spices,” notes the designer.

Designed by Nannette Brown , the glossy all-black kitchen of this New York City apartment oozes with high drama and sophistication.

“I’m a big believer that within a home, different rooms should evoke different feelings and purposes,” says the local designer.

The spectacular transformation of this Boston home bar by Twelve Chairs Interiors , designed for serious wine collectors who love to entertain, involved adding an extra row of cabinets and polished nickel knobs and pulls—not to mention a fun rolling ladder.

“By going all the way up, we added function and erased the unsightly void,” explains the firm’s cofounder, Miggy Mason.

Last but not least: Rounding out this year’s list is Brown Hall Design principal Colleen Bashaw’s sweet bar setup.

Replete with a little brass sink and mini fridge, the charming space seamlessly blends in with the rest of her New Jersey home ’s whimsical interiors.

This front entry used to lack a lot of life  before  we moved in.

Painting the door was a huge improvement and adding the  gallery wall  gives the entry a much bigger feel because it draws your eye up when you walk in.

With modern decor, I have added in a vintage marble table that was in our dining room in the house I grew up in back in Chicago.

The floors came with the house, but they have that thin slat, old school vibe which I love.

Front Room

Anyone else call it a frunch room?

Pretty sure that's a Chicago slang, but this room is one of our favorite rooms to cozy up in.

Because the room is not completely finished, I don't have too many photos just yet, but if you ever need a chance to take a breather and just soak in a cocktail and read a good book, this is the room to do it.

Many vintage antiques reside on that bookshelf!

The dining room is my last room on the main level to beautify.

A few final touches and it will be ready to give the full tour, but for now, I'll give you a sneak peek at my centerpiece.

More to come on the dining room soon… I promise!

The living room was one of my first rooms to really transform.

Powder Room

DIY Acrylic frames to personalize this space.

This room was so hideous  before  we painted.

Now that it is done, I have never felt better about hosting parties (pre-Covid of course) and allowing people to use the bathroom.

The best part is this room cost me less than  $100 to transform !

In phase 2 of this transformation, I added the DIY acrylic frames of all my husband's favorite golf courses in black and white.

I love it because the black and white gives them that vintage look, but they are photos we actually took ourselves!

Creating a Basement Bathroom from Scratch

And last, but not least, the basement bathroom!

This bathroom was built from scratch a couple years after we moved in.

It is fully equipped with a giant storage closet and adds another full bath to our home.

I'll get a better photo of the shower soon, but the colors are pretty accurate in the other photo above.

Building a bathroom from nothing was super fun, but definitely required some planning.

MY WEATHERED HOME

Welcome to My Weathered Home! Our family moved into this new build craftsman style house back in 2011 and while we are the first owners, it was basically finished when we found her! That means that I wasn’t given the opportunity to make any of the decisions on things like tile, granite, flooring, and so on! BUT – I didn’t mind at all because I knew that over time I would be able to make it “mine.” Finding authentic antique pieces that spoke to my heart was the first step and next came paint and projects and so on. We have slowly been making changes to this place and with each new piece we bring in and with each project behind us, we fall more and more in love!

An East Village Apartment Finds New Life Through Color and Quirky Details

Everything about this East Village apartment felt destined by devine chance. Located in the historic Christodora House, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit was originally constructed in 1928. While the building was first conceived of as a community center for social services, its legacy as a haven for lower Manhattan’s creatives and thinkers lives on. Katia Teran, a product manager, struck up a fast friendship with her landlords while renting during the pandemic. Then in 2022, Katia purchased the apartment directly from the couple, who’d lived there for over twenty years.

A built-in shelving system, hand-crafted by the previous owners, became the perfect place to display the couple’s unique art and object collection. A Calacatta marble side table designed by Danielle Siggerud for Audo adds polish to the charming office space.

Katia called on childhood friend Cristina Alvarez of Curio Interior Design to tackle the remodel. The two had attended elementary school together and were keen to find their way back to each other through this generative project. “Our first meeting was at a tile store,” says Cristina, who wanted to keep the initial conversations free-flowing for brainstorming. “I already knew that she was drawn to color, but I wanted to get a deeper sense of what she gravitated towards.” One of the pair’s next early meetups was to attend a Henri Matisse exhibit at MoMA—it was a formative visit as the artist’s paintings ultimately became a driving inspiration behind the home’s color palette and quirky details.

Various iterations of zellige tile bring texture and color into the kitchen, including 2x2s on the backsplash and a gorgeous burgundy 4x4 by Zia Tile on the peninsula.

The kitchen, at the geographic and metaphoric center of the apartment, required the most in-depth renovation. Closed-off walls and ineffectual storage were the first to go. Opening up the space was key to creating a sense of airiness and flow throughout the floor plan. Cristina ensconced the refrigerator within a wood-paneled millwork volume with a hidden pantry behind. Custom cabinetry, under-counting lighting, and a new suite of tile applications ground the room in both a functional and aesthetic modernity. The peninsula’s bold handmade burgundy zellige tile and the floor’s neutral checkerboard cement tile play off each other through material, tone, and scale.

At Katia’s urging, Cristina decided to keep the apartment’s original wood floors. Extensive sanding and staining was needed to restore the planks to their intended glory. “I have a lot of clients who would look at those worn floors and just want something new,” says Cristina. “But Katia was so intent on maintaining that charm.” As Cristina notes, that’s just Katia’s vibe.

The original inspiration for the apartment’s color palette, Isobel Harvey’s Blue Horned Bull painting finds prized placement in the dining room, atop a Lulu & Georgia console.

When the duo found London–based painter Isobel Harvey’s Blue Horned Bull , as seen in the dining area, their direction for the rest of the open-concept living space was set. Complimentary to the rich burgundy in the kitchen, the electric blue hue pops with unexpected zest. And with the base of warm wood tones and sumptuous neutrals anchoring the couch and rugs, funky prints are allowed to shine through the dining chairs and fabric daybed. Emma Kohlmann’s Four Portals , a gift Katia bought herself upon her graduation from business school, also finds a distinctive home in the living room, adding another layer of brightness and whimsy to the space.

An undulating headboard, dinosaur pillow by House of Hackney , and subtly graphic rug by Nordic Knots add just the right amount of quirkiness to the elevated bedroom.

Though Cristina bets Katia would’ve preferred to go louder in the bedroom, she wanted to keep it soothing and tranquil (at the request of Katia’s husband) while still showcasing unique personality. The couple agreed on a soft blue paint for the ceiling making a subtle color statement, meanwhile an offbeat printed rug and undulating curved headboard offer moments of pizzazz within a paired-back palette to appease both sides.

At the heart of the second bedroom turned office is a built-in bookcase, personally crafted for the room by the previous homeowners. Though Cristina and Katia toyed with different options for it, they ultimately wanted it to be kept in its original condition, deciding to use it as a display for Katia’s collection of travel finds, books, and art objects. “It feels special because that’s what it was always used for,” says Cristina. “The former owners were very artsy and into music, just like Katia and her husband, and that’s where they showcased everything they loved. So it still is that. And I love that history behind it.” Indeed, a fitting homage for a space full of serendipity.

Very minimal work was done in the bathroom. While the client liked the existing black and white subway tile, minor cosmetic upgrades were made with plumbing fixtures, a new vanity, mirror, and lighting.

A hint of home helps Robert MacIntyre secure first PGA TOUR title at RBC Canadian Open

Change Text Size

ANCASTER, Ontario – It wasn’t quite a last resort, but the call had a tone of desperation.

After parting ways with a former caddie at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Robert MacIntyre needed a fill-in for the RBC Canadian Open. A handful of queries went unfulfilled, so MacIntyre dialed up his emergency option – his dad Dougie.

The Scotsman didn’t want to inconvenience his father, who still resides in MacIntyre’s hometown of Oban, Scotland, and works full-time as head greenkeeper at Glencruitten Golf Club – but Dougie MacIntyre knows his son’s game inside and out. He coached him until he was 14 or 15 years old and was an accomplished shinty player, only without the funds to pursue his full potential at the sport’s highest level (MacIntyre describes shinty as “a cross between field hockey and organized violence”).

Dougie MacIntyre hadn’t caddied since DP World Tour Q-School in fall 2017, but this week marked a critical juncture in his son’s first season as a PGA TOUR member – the highly touted MacIntyre, 27, arrived in Canada at No. 75 on the FedExCup standings, right on the bubble to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs (top 70 after the Wyndham Championship in August). The call was made, and the answer was a quick yes – after confirming he could take the week off from work.

Robert MacIntyre’s emotional interview after winning the RBC Canadian

That call led to more than they could have imagined. MacIntyre earned his first PGA TOUR title at the RBC Canadian Open, carding a final-round 68 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club for a 16-under 264 total, one stroke clear of Ben Griffin. Not only does he get the proverbial monkey off his back, after a gripping one-stroke defeat to Rory McIlroy at last summer’s Genesis Scottish Open, but MacIntyre cements exempt PGA TOUR status through 2026 and qualifies for this season’s remaining Signature Events. (He’s also safely inside the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking, meaning he can cancel his Monday tee time at 36-hole U.S. Open Final Qualifying, in which his dad was also planning to carry the bag.)

Dougie MacIntyre is the first father to caddie his son to a PGA TOUR title since Jack Slocum (for son Heath) at the 2005 Southern Farm Bureau Classic. This isn’t a permanent arrangement by any means; MacIntyre said he has a full-time caddie scheduled to start at next week’s Memorial Tournament presented by Workday – which is a new addition to his schedule after his victory in Canada. (He might have liked to return home to Oban for some celebrations, he quipped afterward, but he figures a trip to Muirfield Village isn’t a bad idea.)

Robert MacIntyre pars the last to secure first win at RBC Canadian

MacIntyre is a chip off the old block, known on TOUR for his kindness and humility – which he certainly inherited from his father. MacIntyre’s parents (Dougie and mom Carol) are longtime foster parents; MacIntyre grew up with several foster brothers and sisters. The family wasn’t particularly well off; MacIntyre didn’t have the pick of the litter when it came to junior golf tournaments, but he was always loved, supported and encouraged. He grew to understand the rough upbringings of his foster brothers and sisters – some had been abused or neglected – and he learned not to take anything for granted. After his son’s victory Sunday in southern Ontario, Dougie MacIntyre gave away golf balls and towels to young fans, conversing and sharing in their revelry. He was in full dad effect.

“I think it makes you realize that hitting a white ball around a golf course isn't the most important thing,” MacIntyre described the impact of his parents’ fostering. “I mean, I've been in tears over it, kids going away from you. They become family. They have been in a tough spot. I wasn't given everything as a kid. I was given a great opportunity. My dad was obviously a really good sportsman, football, golf, shinty, didn't have the finances to really chase it, and I think it was something that my mom and dad always wanted to do. I've got two older sisters who are right into their horses, horse riding and stuff, but they even sacrificed quite a lot of that just to give me a chance.

“I couldn't play in golf tournaments as a junior because we couldn't afford it. I think that made me, that makes me fight and never give up, I think not being given anything. I mean, they gave me quite a bit. They gave me the opportunity, but never – never was I spoon-fed. I was always fighting for every bit of it.”

Dougie MacIntyre’s soft side complements a competitive edge that was also on display at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, coming to the forefront at critical moments on the weekend. The younger MacIntyre was on the verge of falling into a mental rut as he strode down the 10th fairway Saturday, having turned in 1-over 36 and sensing his grip on the tournament slipping away (he entered the third round in a share of the lead; he was four back at the turn Saturday). His dad sensed the spiral and wanted to nip it in the bud – MacIntyre has emphasized an improved mental game in recent weeks, taking negative thoughts and flipping them into a positive tone.

“He was having a wee go at me when I was walking from the 10th tee down to the fairway,” MacIntyre said. “Look, he was a sporting guy, he knows how to win, knows how to lose, he's been through it all. He could see my head going a little bit and he's like, ‘What have you been working on for the last eight weeks, 10 weeks?’ … I kind of flipped into that mode and tried to find the positive in everything.”

Robert MacIntyre's news conference after winning RBC Canadian

MacIntyre listened on the very next hole. After his tee shot caught a divot in the 11th fairway, he could have been “mumping and moaning about it,” but he told himself the lie lent itself to a cutty 6-iron. He played a 183-yard approach to the center of the green and two-putted from 20 feet. Then he played his next seven holes in 4-under, signing for a 4-under 66 and suddenly assuming a four-stroke lead into Sunday, where he withstood Griffin’s late charge (birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 17) for a one-stroke win that he and his dad will remember forever.

The energy of their shared hug on the 18th green Sunday, amidst the cacophony of adoring Canadian fans, was surely felt back home in Oban. It’s where MacIntyre learned the game and what it meant to be a man. Both things coalesced this weekend, under the watchful eye of the man who has been there all the way.

“Unbelievable,” said Dougie MacIntyre on the 18th green in the aftermath, basking in the moment with tears in his eyes. He could barely speak, but the emotion said it all.

“Unbelievable.”
