Points Programs

Hotel programs, best credit cards, back to guides, timeshare presentations: how to get cheap & free vacations.

If you’re not familiar with timeshare presentations, now’s the time to take a look at them as a means to very cheap stays in many popular vacation spots.

timeshare tours for free vacation

If you’re planning to visit some of the world’s most popular destinations, you can run into some hurdles if award availability is scarce and cash prices are high.

Sure, points can help offset the cost, but that means it will cost you a lot of points. What if I told you there’s a way to save those points and snag an awesome deal on your accommodation?

Well, there is – welcome to the world of timeshare presentation packages.

What Is a Timeshare?

In a nutshell, a timeshare is a shared ownership program in which you may use a vacation property for a set time period every year.

Timeshare properties can range from resorts to condominiums to campsites. They can be a good option for travellers who have a favourite destination they like to vacation at every year.

With timeshares, these travellers will  have familiar accommodations to return to each time without the hassle of having to manage a fully-owned property while they are away.

Most of the big hotel brands that we’re familiar with have their own affiliated timeshare division. A few well-known examples include the Marriott Vacation Club, Hilton Grand Vacations, Holiday Inn Vacation Club, Hyatt Residence Club, and even Disney has their own Disney Vacation Club.

Generally speaking, there are two types of timeshares: those that are points-based and those that give you deeded weeks.

  • In a points-based program, you have a certain number of points each year that can be redeemed against nights at your timeshare.
  • In a deeded-week program, every year, you have a “week” of the year that you can use your timeshare.

You do not necessarily need to stick with your timeshare property either. Usually, there is a system or program for owners to swap their property for another destination or property for any given year, building some flexibility into the program.

Despite the perks of timeshares, many people choose not invest in one, as they can be a money drain if you don’t make good use of them.

There are annual maintenance fees for the upkeep of the property that have to be paid, the process of swapping properties can be quite complicated, and it can be a pain to get rid of them or resell them as they don’t hold much value in the reseller’s market.

What Is a Timeshare Presentation?

Whether you feel like timeshares may be a good fit for your travel patterns or not, you should consider attending a timeshare preview presentation.

The timeshare market is a competitive one, and most timeshare vacation clubs will offer some form of incentive for an opportunity to introduce you to their program in the hopes of enticing you to purchase one.

What is offered as part of the package varies by the club and even the property, and it can be anywhere from tickets to a theme park or a show, to accommodations at one of their properties for several days at a huge discount, plus maybe even some bonus points for their respective hotel award programs.

If it’s the accommodation you’re after, keep in mind that usually the package will cover a “standard” room; however, there is a possibility for upgrading, as we’ll discuss later.

What’s the Catch with Timeshare Presentations?

To take advantage of these fantastic offers, you (and your spouse, if you’re married) need to attend a 1.5- to two-hour sales pitch about the timeshare program while you’re vacationing on your timeshare package.

During that time, they’ll introduce you to their program, how easy it is to use the timeshare, the flexibility it provides, the years of enjoyment you will get out of it, and even give you a tour of a potential timeshare unit.

Easy enough, right? Most of the time, yes.

Some sales representatives can be pushy and will pull out all the stops to get you to sign on, because that’s how they earn their commission. You may feel pressured to buy, and they may spend a lot of time negotiating a better offer for you.

Most sales reps, however, are quite reasonable. If you’ve put in your time and made it clear you’re not ready to buy, they’ll send you along your merry way. And if you do happen to cave under the pressure and buy the timeshare, it’s not the end of the world (more on this later).

During the pandemic, some timeshares like the Marriott Vacation Club opted to do virtual sales presentations, and in lieu of a vacation deal, you’d earn Bonvoy points instead.

There have been recent offers of up to 20,000–25,000 Bonvoy points; however, you have to be a US resident to take advantage. For the in-person presentation packages, there are no US residency requirements.

How to Book a Timeshare Presentation

Now that you might be considering taking advantage of a timeshare presentation, let’s go over how you find these offers and sign up for them.

The easiest way is through each respective club’s website. Usually, there is a phone number or online form to complete for additional information.

Hyatt even allows you to book the package online if you reside in the USA.

Once you purchase the package, there is quite a bit of flexibility when it comes to booking. Although the terms specifically say that the timeshare has to be booked within 12 months of purchase, it is not uncommon for them to extend this deadline. I have done this on a couple of occasions myself, even prior to the pandemic.

Once you book your package, you can still change the dates, although some programs will charge a change fee. During the pandemic, there was even more leniency (I rescheduled a Marriott preview package no less than four times), although this may tighten up a bit as travel opens up.

Unfortunately, once you purchase a preview package, they are generally considered non-refundable. There have been scattered reports of people receiving refunds if they no longer fulfill the eligibility for the package, but as always, your mileage may vary and this should not be the expectation.

My Experiences with Hilton Grand Vacations

Hilton Grand Vacations (HGV) has over 50 properties spread across the United States. Their properties differ from the regular Hilton-branded hotels in that they generally offer accommodations with more space, larger and a greater number of bedrooms, and ensuite kitchen and laundry amenities.

Note that not all HGV properties are bookable through timeshare presentations, and some properties are only made available at certain times.

Thus far, I’ve done a couple of packages with Hilton Grand Vacations in Orlando , and another in Honolulu . Here’s a recap of my experiences so far with HGV.

Parc Soleil by Hilton Grand Vacations

View on the Hilton Grand Vacations website.

2017 Package Deal: Three nights / four days for US$199 and a US$200 “Stay a Night On Us” rebate voucher; upgraded to a two-bedroom suite for an additional US$50

A few years back, I had to call Hilton reservations to change an existing hotel booking I had. At the end of the call, they thanked me for being a loyal Hilton Honors member and asked if I would be interested in hearing about a “great offer” they currently had. I accepted, and so began my journey down the rabbit hole of timeshare packages.

I was forwarded to another agent, who offered me the above timeshare package. I was considering a trip to Disney for my son’s fifth birthday anyway, and this would definitely help bring down the trip’s cost, so I bought the package.

When we decided on our dates, I called back, and they confirmed availability and booked our accommodation and the timeshare presentation to be done during our stay – and that was it!

At the time of booking, my youngest was only a few months old and wasn’t the greatest sleeper, and so extra space to accommodate her sleeping situation was desirable. When I inquired whether our one-bedroom suite could be upgraded to a two-bedroom suite, the agent advised that we could do that for an additional US$50, which seemed more than reasonable to me, bringing our grand total to US$249 plus tax.

We stayed at the HGV Parc Soleil, which is a 15-minute drive into Disney. Other than being a bit further out from Disney, it was a fantastic accommodation option for families.

It had two beautiful outdoor pools, one that was zero-entry with a water slide and another for adults only. They had a kids activity centre and some organized activities throughout the day. There was also a basketball court, tennis court, and outdoor playground for the kids.

The suite itself was spacious, modern and clean with a full kitchen and an in-suite washer and dryer. There was also a paid shuttle service ($10 round trip per person) to the surrounding amusement parks, but times were rather limited.

We attended the timeshare presentation on the second day. It was located at the Parc Soleil, which made it convenient.

At check-in, they ask for your ID and credit card, then invite you to enjoy snacks and non-alcoholic drinks while you wait for your sales representative. You can also drop off your kids at a small, supervised children’s room (with toys, colouring, and a TV) while you attend the presentation.

Since it was our first timeshare presentation experience, we did not know what to expect. We were also genuinely interested in learning more about timeshares, which didn’t work in our favour.

They started off with some general questions about our travel habits and destinations we wanted to visit, and then went onto discuss how HGV could make it all happen at a fraction of the cost.

Once the sales representative realized we actually had some interest, he turned the pressure on. He would show us how he had booked various destinations at fantastic rates and began negotiating on the amount of initial investment required to purchase, while offering additional Hilton Honors points to sweeten the deal.

Each time we declined, he would go back to his manager and come back with a better deal.

This went on for a bit until he finally came back with what seemed to be a decent offer at the time, and we actually signed the papers and walked out with a timeshare after the two and half hours.

The agent offered to refund our US$199 package cost, probably as a kind gesture given that we had just bought a timeshare with him, and then sent us to the front desk to obtain our US$200 “Stay a Night On Us” rebate voucher.

Suffice to say, purchasing a time share was not our initial game plan. Luckily for us, there is a cooling-off period built into the contracts, whereby you have 10 days to rescind a timeshare purchase agreement.

With some time and space to actually think about our impulsive decision, we decided it really wasn’t for us and the next day, we rescinded.

The staff were very kind about it and it was an easy enough process, but lesson learned: do not show any interest in a timeshare if you are in it only for the cheap accommodations.

Hilton Grand Vacations at Tuscany Village

2019 Package Deal: Four nights / five days in a one bedroom suite for US$299, refunded after presentation, one $200 “Stay A Night On Us” rebate voucher OR 10,000 Hilton Honors points

A year later, my husband had a conference in Chicago at the Hilton. HGV had set up a booth in the lobby, where they offered everyone 1,000 Hilton Honors points just for listening to what they had to offer.

Jon took them up on the offer, and this time he was offered packages to either New York City, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, or Orlando. They were two- to four-night packages ranging from US$199 to US$399.

Now, you might be wondering: how often you can purchase a timeshare presentation package? As per HGV’s terms, as long as you have not attended another presentation in the last 12 months, you are eligible to purchase another.

We were just over a year since our first package, so we bought another, back to Orlando. This time around, the offer was four nights for US$299 plus tax, so we were a little hesitant as our previous offer was better.

The sales agent, sensing the hesitancy, sweetened the package by offering either a US$200 “Stay a Night On Us” rebate voucher or 10,000 Hilton Honors points, and to refund the US$299 after the presentation. That sealed the deal for us.

This time, we chose to stay at the Tuscany Village, located about 15 minutes from Disney once again. The décor was a bit more dated, but it still had an outdoor playground and a few pools that would satisfy most young kids.

There were also complimentary DVD rentals and a children’s activity centre, albeit a bit smaller than the one at Parc Soleil.

I enjoyed the fact that it was right beside the Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets, which meant some retail therapy for me between theme park days. They also had a paid shuttle going to the amusement parks, but once again, the times were limited.

Our presentation was back at the Parc Soleil. This time, my husband and I had a different game plan: we would tell them that we weren’t ready to buy a timeshare and to let them know early on.

This was working well for us initially, and at the one-hour mark the agent was pretty much finishing up. As we were just about to leave, he advised us that his manager had one last offer for us, which got us our third package…

The Grand Islander by Hilton Grand Vacations

The manager came out and offered us a trial membership to the HGV program. Now this was different.

There was no set destination for the package; instead, for $1,599 (USD), we would be given enough points to redeem for seven nights in up to a two-bedroom suite at any of the HGV properties in North America, including Hawaii.

We did the math and worked out that it would be less than $230 (USD) a night. If it were any other destination, we would have left it. After looking at the current rates for Hawaii for a Hilton property in Honolulu for March Break, we came to see that it was a great deal.

Keep in mind that these are rates for two adults and two children. If you have more than four in your family, like myself, either you’re paying more, or you’ll find that most hotels won’t even be able to accommodate. The fact that we could book a two-bedroom suite was a big selling point for us.

HGV has quite a few properties in Hawaii, with the Grand Islander by HGV being one of the newer ones. We booked at the Grand Islander for four nights in Honolulu over March Break .

That leaves us with three nights remaining, which we could have used to extend reservation to seven nights…

…or book three nights at their New York property, West 57th Street by Hilton Club at the south end of Central Park, another otherwise pricey accommodation option.

Either way, you can see that our $230 (USD) per night beats the above rates by a long shot.

An Even Better Offer…

Sticking with Hawaii as our theme destination, HGV currently has an offer on their website for five nights in Honolulu or Waikoloa for $799 (USD) in a standard room, which brings the nightly rate to $160 (USD) – an incredible deal for a night in Hawaii.

Granted, it’s for a standard room, but I’m pretty sure you can request an upgrade offer to a bigger suite at a decent cost when you call in.

My Experience with Marriott Vacation Club

We originally purchased our Marriott Vacation Club Preview Package back in 2019. This package offered a five nights at Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club for $799 (USD).

After numerous delays and postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we finally enjoyed our stay in March 2022 .

We rescheduled our timeshare presentation after our arrival, and there were no issues with moving it to a different day. When it came time for the actual presentation, it took place in a cubicle in their outdoor Sales Centre.

We wound up going over the 90-minute allotment, and spent closer to two hours there. I was genuinely interested in the program, so it was more my fault than theirs.

Marriott Vacation Club uses a points-based system. Our sales agent offered us the base-level 1,500 points at $15.84 (USD) per point, totalling $23,760 (USD).

As a signup bonus, they were willing to throw in another 3,000 points for the first year.

To put things into perspective, a one-bedroom villa in Maui at peak season could cost up to 4,500 points per week.

We didn’t show much interest in this, and they tried to sweeten the deal with some more offers, but we kindly declined. As we had an exit interview, another sales agent came in to offer us yet another timeshare presentation package.

The first offer, which was good for the next two years, was five nights at the same property for $1,295 (USD). We weren’t sure when we would be back to Maui again, so, again, we declined.

They approached us with one last offer: $995 (USD) for four nights at any of their North American properties, including another property in Hawaii for a $300 (USD) add-on fee.

Our family wanted to visit Kauai in the near future, and after a quick check for a four-night stay in the winter revealed prices at around $2,600 (USD) for four nights, we accepted this last offer.

It goes to show that sticking around for more offers can result in some pretty great rates!

If you’re not familiar with timeshare presentation packages, now’s the time to take a look at them as a means to very cheap accommodations in many popular vacation spots.

Timeshare presentations are a great option in areas where points redemptions are either not worth it (e.g., Orlando, where hotels are generally quite cheap to begin with), or in places where redemptions are difficult to make (e.g., Hawaii where the cost of redemptions are high).

It does require a small time commitment and perhaps a bit of finesse in talking down a sales representative, but in my mind, the savings are definitely worth it.

When Is a Timeshare Presentation Offer a Good Deal?

timeshare tours for free vacation

Many or all of the products on this page are from partners who compensate us when you click to or take an action on their website, but this does not influence our evaluations or ratings. Our opinions are our own.

Would you sit through a two-hour timeshare sales presentation to get three nights at a hotel in Orlando, plus 15,000 Hilton Honors points — all for $199? How about for dinner or a spa voucher at a Marriott hotel in Dubai? Would three nights in Tahoe plus 10,000 IHG points for $249 be worth enduring a long sales pitch?

Companies dangle generous perks to try to sell you a timeshare, with offers ranging from free parking to free hotel nights to deeply discounted hotel stays — provided you sit through a timeshare sales presentation of 90 minutes or more.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering a timeshare sales presentation offer.

How timeshares work

What is a timeshare.

A timeshare is a fractional ownership of a vacation property or vacation property lease — usually at a popular travel destination or resort. It’s a lifetime commitment, although it’s possible to resell it. You’re basically investing in the opportunity to spend a week or more at select properties every year.

Many hotel chains have timeshares, including Hilton , Marriott and IHG .

The question "Is a timeshare a good deal?" is different from the question "Is this timeshare presentation offer a good deal?" Timeshares are often pitched as ways to save money on future vacations. Depending on your travel habits, it’s possible the timeshare pros and cons could tilt in your favor. But in most cases, collecting points and miles redeemable for travel is a better way to save.

But even if you know the timeshare route isn’t for you, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should skip out on the timeshare presentation offer. The perks could be well worth your time.

Timeshare presentation offers

A timeshare presentation offer is any benefit or discount — like free or reduced hotel stays, bonus points or free spa treatments — that you can receive by agreeing to sit through a timeshare sales presentation. These offers can include things like free parking at a resort where you’re staying, free hotel nights or deeply discounted hotel stays and resort experiences.

To determine whether it’s worth sitting through a presentation, consider the value of the perk being offered. In the case of free parking, you would probably be better off spending $50 to self-park and skip the sales pitch.

Can attending timeshare presentations offer a good deal?

Even still, there are times when sitting through a timeshare presentation can be worth your while. You can find good timeshare deals on offers for discounted stays, free nights and more online — or get offers through phone calls or targeted emails. In some cases, you might decide the savings are worth it.

Tip: Watch out for blackout dates, hidden charges and more

Depending on the hotel chain, your offer could be subject to blackout dates, high-season charges and package expiration dates. Read the terms and conditions carefully.

Worthwhile timeshare offers, by chain

Here are a few offers from major hotel chains that, depending on how you feel about sitting through a sales pitch, might be worth grabbing.

Hilton has a timeshare presentation offer that gets you a three-night stay in Orlando or Las Vegas, plus 15,000 Hilton points for $199. That’s a pretty decent deal considering that rooms normally cost $175 to $500 per night.

This offer is good at several hotels, including the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista — an official Walt Disney World hotel. This means it gives its guests additional benefits, such as extra magic hours and access to FastPass. (Note that both services are currently on hold).

Other Hilton offers include a five-night stay at a resort in Hawaii for $649 plus taxes. The online offer includes 15,000 points. But a recent phone call to Hilton proved that sales representatives have some leeway to negotiate, in this case switching the offer to 5,000 Hilton points and a $200 Hilton gift certificate.

There are two different Hilton packages available for Hawaii — you can pick either Honolulu or the Big Island. Considering room rates here often hover around $500 per night, you can save a bundle by sitting through a timeshare presentation. For example, five nights in September 2021 at the Ocean Tower at the Hilton Waikoloa Village cost about $1,891.

That’s a big discount, not counting that $200 gift certificate and the value of those points, at a sprawling oceanfront resort featuring a saltwater lagoon.

Marriott Vacation Club has a number of specials for travelers willing to attend a timeshare presentation. In Dubai, for example, you can score two free nights at a number of hotels throughout the Middle East.

marriott timeshare deals

You can also participate in timeshare presentation in exchange for a dinner or spa voucher at select Marriott hotels in Dubai.

IHG’s vacation club is extending offers for properties in Gatlinburg, Tennessee; New Orleans; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Lake Tahoe, Nevada; among others.

At the Lake Tahoe resort, you can pay $249 plus tax and get three nights in a one-bedroom villa at the Holiday Inn Club Vacations: Tahoe Ridge Resort, as well as 10,000 IHG points .

Considering three nights at that resort can cost upward of $1,000, the timeshare presentation offer may be well worth it.

Some IHG hotels cost as little as 8,000 points per night, which means you can turn those 10,000 points into another free night.

Who qualifies for timeshare presentation offers?

Not everyone will qualify for these offers. Requirements vary by chain, so check the details of your offer before committing to one of these packages.

In the case of Hilton, you must not have attended a timeshare presentation within the past year at the property where you’ll be staying or within the last six months at any other properties. You’ll also need to meet certain other criteria, though they don’t publish details about what these are.

For Marriott’s Vacation Club offer in Dubai, you must be a married couple 30 to 65 years old with a joint income of over $130,000 who has traveled to Europe at least once in the past three years.

IHG’s Holiday Inn Club, meanwhile, requires that you be older than 25 with a minimum income of $50,000.

If you’re tempted by a timeshare presentation offer

Are all timeshare presentation offers a good deal? No, especially if you’re staying somewhere cheap or they’re just handing out free parking. But if you do some research, you can score serious discounts in truly exciting locations.

Free Travel From Timeshare Presentations

Drew Macomber

Lately people have shared stories with me about getting all kinds of free things including food or room and board. First let me explain a little bit about what a timeshare presentation is and how getting free stuff works.

Timeshare (noun)

“The arrangement whereby several joint owners have the right to use a property as a vacation home under a time-sharing scheme.”

Years ago I met a guy who really works the system to get timeshare rentals, which I’ll share more about in a later post. But I never really pursued it until recently.

Basically, hotels and hotel chains really want to sell you a longterm/lifetime commitment to their hotel. This is so profitable for them that they will actually pay you to sit through their sales pitches (that should be warning enough that it’s a bad sign for you). In fact, there are companies and individuals that make a living providing “leads” to the hotel. Meaning, that someone can get paid just by telling you about or taking you to the timeshare sales pitch. So you and the person who made the connection (a website or person off the street) get paid for sitting through this “90 minute” presentation.

So what do I get?

It can be a wide range of things. Show tickets, food vouchers, hotel nights, hotel discounts or even cash, all for just listening to the presentation.

How do I find these things?

That is a good question. Sometimes it’s pretty simple and sometimes it’s luck.

I heard that people at the concierge desk at a resort will sometimes invite you to a presentation. But I’m not sure how high percentage that is. So we’ll stick with strategies people can consistently score free things, food and travel with.

On the street

If you’re in touristy areas like Las Vegas, Orlando, Myrtle Beach, Cancun, etc… These people will snatch you off the street. They might have a booth or a place set up on the main drag to grab “targetted” people. Again, these people are mostly commissioned and are more worried about getting people to the presentation and the hotel is more worried about doing the targeting.

You may be able to google “timeshare promotions” or “timeshare presentations” “in [Las Vegas]” or wherever you’re planning on going and see where these people lurk. Perhaps there will be a forum thread of people sharing their experiences and where they got scooped up.

There are a number of ways to find presentations online. This is also the best source that I’m aware of for securing your presentation ahead of time. These deals are usually discounts on the hotel giving the presentation. You can find all inclusive resorts for $50 a night for two adults. It’s not free but it’s still a good deal. I’ve never done an all inclusive (after all if you’re spending $100 a day in food in mexico, you are getting ripped off!), but food, drinks and lodging, all resort-quality for $50 a night is a great deal. At the cost of a “90 minute presentation.”

Erik in the comments has a great but simple tip:  It’s not too hard to get a an offer, simply go to one of the major timeshare company web sites (Hilton Grand Vacations, Diamond International, Marriott Vacation Club, Starwood Vacation Network, etc.) and fill out their contact form. They may call you – if they do, ask about promo offers because you prefer to “try before you buy”.

The digital middle man

It’s the same middle man concept except online. There are companies that have a template to sell these presentations. Here is a great example.

First of all this is not a one day sale. The sale does not  end in “12 hours, 21 minutes, 21 seconds”, it’s just a bunch of sales tactics. Everyday it will be the same deal for this hotel on this site.

At the bottom of the website you’ll find the terms and conditions, I guess it doesn’t hurt to read them but you have to call anyways and they’ll let you know if you qualify or not.

In this case the participants must be between the income levels of $30,000 – $60,000. And this example says that there is a daily $20 resort fee. Making the real price $70 a night. Still not bad… but I hate hidden fees! I wonder if you can call and bargain the rate down to $30 a day then, making the realistic price $50.

But there are other options but let me give some examples of this template style timeshare presentation seller.

I found these by googling the phone number on the above 5 star Cancun page:

  • IMS Vacations
  • Fun and sun getaways

Similarly I found these on google as well:

  • My Resort Network
  • Vacation People

Online Classifieds and Auctions

Ebay and Craigslist are also good ways to find presentations. In touristy resort areas like Cancun you can try searching Ebay with the following format: [Location] and words like “presentation”, “90 minutes”, “all inclusive”, or “resort”. You can also check different Ebay categories like “travel packages” and use broader words in your search.

If you see a great deal and are interested in related locations try viewing that seller’s profile and their other items for sale. Even on the Ebay results the person selling often pretends to be personal, when really they are just selling leads, chances are they’ll have multiple options.

Make sure you know whether the price is nightly or for the entire stay.

This happened to me when I was in Queenstown, New Zealand. I was at the Crowne Plaza and liked the Hilton better so wanted to switch back, so I called the Hilton (because PC doesn’t give free internet to Plats). Deals online were awesome! Like $60 a night but over the phone the rate was much higher so I backed out and said I’d book online instead (at a nearby coffee shop). But before I hung up I was given the pitch, “would you like ‘X’ amount of miles for learning more about Hilton vacations?” Sure.

Who they target

In general they look for married couples above the age of 35. I’ve seen a few pages that suggest that the “wife” needs to be present. Maybe they feel it’s easier to take advantage of the kinder gender. And the real reason they target people 35 or above is it’s their best guess as to who is financially secure. I guess they assume that the majority of the time you can assume someone in their 20s is not financially secure.

They also might ask your income as they are looking for people who are financially secure. One inside source said they targeted people with incomes above $50,000 a year. With my experience calling Hilton it was very apparent that they were targeting people who make more than $80,000 a year. On the phone they quick asked me some preliminary questions to figure out if I qualified. The “question s ” were… “how much money do you make a year”. There were four choices and the first option was “under $80,000 a year”. Either they wanted to a tactful way to figure out if I made under $80,000 and gave four options as an illusion, or they would do further sales pitch targeting based on your income. Either way, I was given the boot and a slight points compensation after revealing my income was indeed in the first category.

Warning and things to remember

First of all, if you are buying online, make sure you read what it is you’re buying. It’s good to know when you can use it and also good to know of any restrictions.

Do not buy a timeshare! They will use every sales tactic to make it seem like a good idea and that you should buy now, but it’s not a good idea and you don’t need to buy now. Whether you’re looking at a timeshare site or listening to a presentation remember this:  it is  not a one day sale,  it will be the same price tomorrow.

I’ve heard horor stories as to how long the “90 minutes” lasts when the prize is given after the presentation. At least if you book online you already have your room and aren’t expecting any more goodies. But still the presenters do often give  hard   sells. I’ve heard two strategies going in: First, just say you’re not going to buy upfront and that you’re not interested in the pitch but only in the prize. Maybe even say that you would never buy without thinking about it for a week and that you don’t believe the scarcity sales pitch (that it won’t be here tomorrow). Others have said that acting interested makes the sales pitch softer as the presenter thinks the sale is in the bag. I kind of prefer the first, more honest approach as the presenters are commission pay and should have the option to not waste their breath. Win win.

Christian (a regular reader and friend I got to meet recently) was telling me about his hilarious experience in the timeshare sales pitch. When it came time to close the deal they got serious and asked him how much he spent on travel a year. Their next question was how often- when he told them about all the international destinations he and his family of four had gone to on the price he mentioned, they thought he was being goofy. So they started to ask him how he does it and by the end of it they were taking notes! “I’m going to email you later!” They told him as he walked out.

I want people to feel free to comment any tips or experiences they have had in getting great deals from sitting through timeshare sales pitches. If you have anything to add that could help other people interested in the subject, including links and places to check out, add them below.

My honest recommendation

This is not the best way to get free or cheap travel. Generally the rates are only discounted and the pitch can be intense. I’m currently spending two weeks at a 5 star luxury  hotel and it’s completely free. As I always say, miles and points can be acquired cheaper and used better. One great credit card signup bonus could earn enough for a free week at a hotel (or better yet an international flight). Seriously, if I have a good credit score and can get good signup bonuses, why in the world would I suffer through a timeshare presentation? If I have credit cards that earn points and I can find sneaky ways to rack up spends on gift cards I can turn into cash, why would I do a timeshare? In short, I will give it a try, but I will never see this being as beneficial as collecting miles and points, and learning how to use them. But if it works for you, maybe I can learn from it.

Update : I do not have contacts to any hotel, resort or organization that does timeshares. I just used Dr. Google and put together a post on it. I specialize in using rewards points from the best credit cards and promotions, and using them to book dream trips. If you would like to find a presentation, I’m afraid I can’t help anymore than the post above and the comments below.

We’ve done a few of these presentations, they can be great values especially if you are a family. You just need to have the willpower to forcefully say no and mean it, no matter what they say. Keep track of the time and if your agreed time has lapsed, you can safely walk out because you have fulfilled your obligation under the promotional terms. It’s not too hard to get a an offer, simply go to one of the major timeshare company web sites (Hilton Grand Vacations, Diamond International, Marriott Vacation Club, Starwood Vacation Network, etc.) and fill out their contact form. They may call you – if they do, ask about promo offers because you prefer to “try before you buy”. Understand that it is rarely ever a good deal to buy a timeshare from the developer. If you are interested in the concept, do your research at sites like http://www.tugbbs.com and buy your timeshare on the resale market. Your wallet will thank you.

I entered a contest at Pizza Hut last summer and was called about a tour at a resort in Virginia. It was great! The presentation was short, sweet and to the point, and I didn’t purchase a thing! Though we had to travel a bit to get to the site, We actually left with a $225 general gift card, $50 to Pizza Hut AND 2 other similar vacations at various US locations! I’d highly recommend these timeshare deals to anyone looking for an inexpensive way to travel. Thanks for the article presenting a few more. 🙂

I am interested in attending an all inclusive timeshare presentation but will only attend if offered the best deal I can get.Two years ago, I stayed at Westgate Resorts for 7 nights. I insisted on a DELUXE one bedroom suite with full kitchen, washer and dryer and when they offered me two days to Universal Studios, I insisted on 7 day two park tickets for two. They also gave me a great deal on a rent a car. It was $503 for the room which was just geourgious and $199 for the car for one week. I will attend their sales pitch, but will not buy until it is an offer that actually benefits me. How do I find more? Right now someone from Florida keeps calling but I have had too much going on to answer. The last time I spoke with them, they would not offer tickets to Universal Studios so I said no. Right now I am also trying to find one in Las Vegas. Are there any All Inclusive deals in Las Vegas?

I’ve done several of these. Back in the day, the “prizes” were very good. The best one I ever did gave me $100 in actual restaurant gift cards (Olive Garden and TGI Fridays I believe) just for showing up. And then, after the presentation, we got a voucher for a free Carnival (yeah, Carnival) cruise to Mexico. From LA. We lived in ATL at the time and I worked for Delta, so we could fly out there to catch the cruise for free.

Nowadays though, it seems the “prizes” are tied up in lots of strings and it’s almost impossible to actually use them.

My “bad” experience (which really wasn’t horrible) was last summer. I bought a deal on Groupon for $30. It gave me a 2 night hotel stay in Gatlinburg and a $100 dining voucher (worthless restaurants.com) for sitting through a presentation. (of course the 90 minutes is usually more like 3 hours) Anyway..when I made the booking I had to pay a $50 deposit that I was told I would get back after I mailed in the stamped voucher from the timeshare place. I did. But no $50 refund. I called them in Oct and they said they were working on processing all the refunds. I called again in Jan and the number was disconnected and no sign of the company online anymore. OUt of business. Buyer beware.

' src=

Inalso bought a groupon for a place in playa, but every time i have tried to book, there is no supposed availability. Money wsted. And no one would refund my money!

' src=

You can contact Groupon and get your money back. I refuse to say “money wasted”. I work hard for my money. I am sure you do too.

' src=

How lame do you have to be to sit thru a sales pitch for 90 minutes, let alone consider doing it? I’d rather sleep in the gutter than whore myself for the sake of saving a few bucks.

' src=

While your in the gutter ill be in a hotel saving a few hundred dollars a night. You are definitely the cool one though. Keep rocket there Bon Jovial. Lol

' src=

Wife and I went to Playa del Carmen a couple years back. We found a guy selling excursion vouchers who hooked us up with the timeshare circuit. We always did morning presentations (9:00AM or so) which forced us to get up and make the most of our day. For each resort we went to we got $150 US dollars and about $50 in pesos. We made $1400 on our trip. And all we had to do was go to a 90 minute presentation 7 of our 10 days… a few secondary benefits include: getting treated to the BEST food the resorts have to offer (they aren’t going to take you to the regular buffet if they are trying to sell you their timeshares… you get some pretty upscale treatment) and you get to check out surrounding resorts for your next stay. You also get free transportation to and from the resorts. But you probably know best, cool guy… so go ahead and take your vacation, sleep until noon each day, head down to the crappy breakfast buffet, eat your fill of pancakes and whipped cream, drink a few margaritas, get a sunburn, have your photo taken with any number of exploited or endangered animals, head back to the crappy lunch buffet for a .99 cent mystery meat burger or three, have a few more margaritas at the swim-up bar, finish your night with a crappy dinner buffet consisting of 38 types of processed mystery meat dishes followed by a final few margaritas, head back to your room, vomit in the sink, lather, rinse, repeat… then go back home fatter, redder and poorer. Sounds like a great plan.

' src=

Jake, I want to do exactly what you did. Who did you speak with and where? I’m impressed!

' src=

Ambrosia, did you ever find out from Jake the information you asked about? I’m curious too! 🙂

' src=

I was able to get a Wyndham Resorts stay down to $99 for a 3 day, 2 nights with a $150 Amex gift card and a $25 Avis voucher. I’m willing to sit through the presentation. Experiencing New Orleans Mardi Gras in French Quarter for free is worth it to me.

' src=

WHAT WEBSITE WAS THE WYNDHAM RESORT STAY LOCATED AT?

' src=

i am also wondering how i can get on this deal ;)?

If you go to New Orleans, go to the Riverwalk Outlet Marketplace down on the Missippi River. It is right behind the hilton

AT the end of the mall, there is a Wyndham Desk and If your walking by, they will call you

thats what happend to me

' src=

Last winter we gave the IMS website a try and booked at an all-inclusive in Cancun. Our deal was ridiculously cheap. It came out to about $300 for the 2 of us for 4 nights. The hotel was fine, food okay, beach pretty. I am not a fan of all-inclusive and it will be a long while before we do it again. But considering we flew down to Cancun with miles, and that I live in Western NY and it was the dead of winter, I was happy to get away for a cheap vacation. The time share presentation wasn’t too bad. They got a little nasty the last 5 minutes when they sent in the head honcho to use a last resort technique (bullying) on us. But we escaped just fine.

' src=

@ Erik – Thanks I added that tip in the post.

@ Laura – Yea, I try to stay away from unknown brand incentives that are tied up or require deposits and things. But a Carnival Cruise is killer!

@ Paul – I don’t imagine I would mind listening to someone for 90 minutes all that much but I do know other people feel it would be awful. But a Carnival Cruise can be over 1 grand! So unless you make $660+ an hour, it seems totally worth it.

@ Temo – That’s a great deal, how did you find and get it?

@ Jasmine – Yea, that’s unbeatable. Although, I’m not sure I value all-inclusives too much as they are normally well over $100 more a night. Why people pay for that in Mexico where food and drinks are super cheap, I don’t know.

I would love to visit a timeshare presentation or promotion in Orlando or Kessimmee Flordia, if travel is free then I will be coming there.

' src=

Best solution I ever heard for the pitch (and I have not researched this heavily) was simply to say ‘I’ll take it’ !! Most if not all of these timeshares have a backout policy that allows for a full refund within 3-7 days of making the decision. Once you sign up, get out of there, have a good time and cancel when you get home. They cannot apply the same pressure over the phone…..

' src=

Unfortunately, it seems the resorts are catching on to this strategy. They are putting a clause in the contracts now that says the contract is not cancellable by the member/owner. There may be a way around it, but probably only with legal help. Also, I’ve read some other accounts where they employ other strategies to keep you from canceling, including avoiding phone calls and making threats regarding foreclosures, reporting to credit bureaus, filing suits, etc. So, I’m not sure this strategy works so well these days. They’ve figured that one out.

Yes. I recently bought a Kirby due to the “overly aggressive sales tactics” just to get the man out of my house. I cancelled the next day and there was no grief.

' src=

That is exactly what I did and it worked. I only stayed for 30 minutes of the presentation and canceled the day I got home

' src=

Me and my wife did one of these things through http://www.lasvegastimesharepromotions.com . It was alright, but it lasting longer than the “90 minutes” that we were told. However, if you want to get hooked up with some free gifts just for showing up it seemed worth it to us. We had a good time, they hooked us up with a show and dinner just for coming. Hard to complain…

' src=

There is a lot of bad stigma when it comes to timeshare presentations. After years in the Resort business I’ve decided to give back to the future travelers to Las Vegas. After working out different venues with several Geo Holiday Resorts and Shows as well as Dining. Im now extending a 3 day 2 night VegaStay complimentary at one of our Resorts. Once you have arrived into Vegas and checked into your Resort courtesy of VegaStay, you will be required to take a 120 minutes timeshare tour of Geo Holiday at the Jockey Club. I know other companies say 90 minutes but ours if 120 minutes. If you decide you are purchasing a timeshare then yes it will take longer. Now we do offer a $99 refundable deposit and you will get this back in cash after your tour or in the form of payment you first paid with. There is no voucher that you have to mail back or anything like that. If you would like to learn more please feel free to visit our website or give me a call. Thank you Drew for letting me tell my short story on your site. Happy Travels!!

' src=

I actually work in the industry and sell the packages to visit a beautiful time share resort in Orlando or Las Vegas. 4 or 5 days for free. You pay the taxes and resort fees ( $25 to $40 per night) and go to a 2 hour presentation. The presentation is a piece of cake, since the resort is owned by a very respected hotel brand and they don’t want to lose the hotel business. Best deal going right now. My family has all taken advantage of this deal and want to do it again. I have no problems with the product at all. Feel free to email me for details.

I’ll do you one better. There is an all-inclusive resort on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic that has $12-$30 sales several times throughout the year and you do not have to attend the presentation (even though they sure as hell hope you will. I paid $12 a night there last year (and they gave us a junior suite!) and coming again for $19 a night in 2 weeks. I have a write up about it: $29 a night All-Inclusive in DR

' src=

interested in timeshare promotion. free stay

' src=

Would like the website for the DR deal.

' src=

I would truly appreciate it, if you could seen me the write up on the Dominican Republic for $19 a night also $29 A NIGHT all-inclusive in DR. Thank you in advance.

' src=

Do not believe everything you hear during the timeshare presentation: Timeshare presentations are known for being extremely high-pressure and for using misleading sales tactics. You will be told that a timeshare is a good investment, that you can travel all over the world with it, that you can sell it easily, that you can rent your weeks in case you cannot use them. Those statements are not true. Ask as many questions as possible and be sure that all the verbal promises are written in the contract.

' src=

Anyone wanting Vegas,Gatlinburg,Orlando,Miami and a few more, I have fliers for your 3 nights in a four star for $99. Just call 1-888-608-9570 and use reference #86397201939 to receive the 75% off. It’s a fully equipped kitchen in a condo. Have kids? Mention the water park and try for that one in Orlando.Use my code and there is NO experation date!

' src=

I would be interested in a timeshare presentation during Thanksgiving/Christmas. you can send me the details at gurajala.vijay at gmail

' src=

There are good timeshares out there, as well as there are people who feel happy about their timeshare purchases, especially those who enjoy to vacation at the same place and are not spontaneous travelers. Unfortunately, due to the big number of timeshare scams being committed against many vacationers, the industry has gained a terrible reputation.

' src=

Looking for a time share in Curaceo

' src=

Timeshare fraud has been around since the timeshare idea was created, but they increase during poor economy. When times are difficult, timeshare owners are stuck with properties they can´t travel to or even afford. Desperate to recoup some money to pay for bills, they can easily become victims to scams artists pretending to be their timeshare salvation who will take upfront fees -as much as five number figures in some cases- but fail to fulfill their promise.

Hi guys. If you live in Southern California (la, OC and San Diego) I have travel vouchers for hawaii, vegas and a few other locations. We also offer cruises and restaurant vouchers, all you have to do is attend the 90-120 min presentation and you will receive your gift. There is no obligation to buy, you only need to show up on time and listen to the presentation. For more info, please email me at [email protected]

Hi we are interested in visiting a timeshare presentation but travel is a problem from ne mexico, can you send me a travel voulcher to 701 N 3rd in Lovington, or call 575-408-9558

I am intersted in a timeshare tour for Shenandoah Crossing in Gordonsville VA. Does anyone ahve any information on that?

' src=

Top3Travel Destinations and others, I am considering taking our family of 5 on a 4-day vacation with a Timeshare promo at the beginning of April. Would prefer a location Mexico, Carribean or Florida on the beach. All-Inclusive is an added bonus.

If any promotions are available, please email me.

Thanks! – Andrew

' src=

If you take a look on eBay, you will certainly find a cheap timeshare for sale. Some time shares are sold for even less than a dollar. Unfortunately, the majority of timeshare presentations, if not all, are high-pressure and misleading, and they use all type of deceptive sales tactics to get a sale done. However, a cheap timeshare for sale is not a good deal. Even when the timeshare is paid in full, there are still lots of financial responsibilities that are attached to them

' src=

I’d like to attend a presentation at a timeshare in Hawaii. I’m not too picky about which Island, but Kona or Maui would be ideal. My husband and hope to go to Hawaii this May or June. Any promo presentations out there? We’d consider Cape Cod as well, since it is closer to home…I am interested in timeshares that may be exchanged with other people’s properties internationally. Thanks. Hannah

' src=

I also am looking to go to Hawaii and would like to try a timeshare resort before buying, any suggestions?

I went with my husband to Villa del Palmar presentation and we paid 399 for 5 days vacation. We didn’t mind the 3hours presentation since we were there without kids. The lady was nasty but we knew we won’t buy any timeshare. I would def go again

I have some very nice packages available for Mexico Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Vallarta. In addition I have Punta Cana DR, Florida Orlando ( actually Kissimmee ) and Daytona, Bahamas, (Freeport on the beach).

I also have fabulous deals in Bali Indonesia, I lived there for 6 months, and I have Phuket and Koh Samui in Thailand. I lived in Phuket for 6 years so I know it well.

Ill be happy to help anyone who would like to take advantage of them.

Please be aware that the presentations are generally getting softer and more sincere as the hotels with good reputations realize that people i.e. you and I , are perfectly willing to listen to their story and evaluate their holiday programs in return for a discounted or free room for a few days. Its good business for everyone. Cheers from Cozumel, Mexico.

Are you still interested in a package? I’ve got some to Orlando, Vegas, Myrtle Beach and the Smoky Mountains! 4 days 3 nights and more nights can be added on. You can stay at the hotel or the resorts. Travels 4-9 guests. These are with a very reputable hotel branch so the tour is 120 minutes and they don’t want to lose your business staying there in the future.

Personally, I think that timeshares are really scary. I get really nervous, because I know that they really try to sell things to you until you give in, but fortunately I have never fallen for it. I was recently introduced by a friend to a page that does exactly what this article is about. It’s for the Grand Palladium resort chain in the rivieramaya and I went with my husband for a week. We only had to pay 1000 dollars and we had a great time. Although, the presentations aren’t the best it was worth the savings. It was a Palladium discovery promotion thing the web page that we used if anyone wants to go down there.

http://www.palladiumdiscoverypromo.com/ it is this one!

I just came back from the Massresort.com timeshare promotion. The place is beautiful. We did a $75 deposit for 3 days 2 nights. After the ” 1 hour” tour (ended up being about 3 hours) we went back to the little cafe thingy and was given some figures about the prices of timeshares. The first price we were given was $19,000 then my boyfriend and myself said no. Then, some lady came in and said she can “CRUNCH” the numbers for us. Came back and said $10,000. We declined that also, and she was VERY SHORT with us after that. Finally, we said out thank you and good-byes and we hauled off to another room where some other guy asked if $4000 was a better price….. (How does the price go from $19,000-$4,000?) After, all of that was done, we were given a $200 Visa Pre-Paid debit card and a coupon booklet that included an entire weeks stay for free along with free activities.

Overall, I enjoyed it all.

How can I get this package deal

Please send info to [email protected]

Never buy a timeshare in Mexico (or any other foreign country). I’ve heard more than my share of horror stories. Not to mention, you are bound by the laws of that country which can end up very badly for you if things go south!

Having been in the timeshare industry (not anymore), but still in the travel industry, I can tell you that there are much better alternatives like travel clubs that offer the same kind of resorts and even more properties for a fraction of what you would pay for a timeshare.

You’ve just got to do your research – and be a savvy traveler.

If I don’t make over $40,000 am I not qualified for the trip? Do I have to provide proof?

Also, they ask that we bring our id and a major credit card as proof of identity. Why do they need a card?

Hello there, I am looking for a way to take my hubby and daughter on our very first family vacation in 19 years. My husband is a recent retired disabled veteran of the Army of 20 years and at 43 my husband is 9 months into his first time of sobriety from alcohol in 30 years. We never had a honeymoon or were ever able to take a vacation because of his addiction and when he was sober it was 2 deployments in a war zone overseas fighting for his life. I want to surprise him on his 1 year of his new life. We are on a very tight budget due to daughters graduation and loss of active duty pay down to retired and most places do not give retired military perks anymore. I would love to take them to Florida but willing to go anywhere that is CHEAP! Willing to do timeshares or other promotional deals since retired now. =} #785-375-3837 and email is [email protected]

I actually own a company that schedules timeshare presentations. I’ve attended many myself and if it’s not for you, you need to be able to say no. However, sometimes they really do make sense for some people. Either way, it is true that you can save hundreds of dollars just for attending! I say, if you want to save some real money, spend 90 – 120 minutes listening to what they have to tell you! If anyone is interested in giving it a try, I manage multiple locations nationwide including Orlando, Myrtle Beach, Branson, etc. For example, I can get you 3 nights in a luxury resort as well as 2 tickets to Disney for only $189!!! Try to beat that on your own! Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] if you would like some info!

The best offers we have vacationed on have been by signing up for hotel rewards acct, you then are in the database and they send you special invitations for vacation offers. We just got home from staying at the amazing Hyatt Kanaapali Maui resort, large 2 bedroom with full kitchen , living room and lanai for $800….so its not free but when I called to book directly they quoted $1380 per night and it was amazing so not free but worth the 6k+ savings anyday! Personally Im not too interested in the Vegas, Orlanda, Cancun typical timeshare spots but going to Hawaii and the more exclusive properties are work a 90 minute presentation

I would like to know of any time share vacations that may be for the Daytona Beach and Orlando area. We tried to do a nice vacation a few years back and had to leave after being only l8 hours down there. Amanda a little girl who was going with us ended up having an attack where she stopped breathing and was rushed to the hospital. We were down in Florida and had to rush back up just to have her mad because she was allowed to leave the hospital and could have been in Florida that evening. So we would like to try and take her now since she is a little older. And the reason for time share is that if we see we like it and can afford it, it would be a place to be able to plan to go to each year, and it should in the long run be a little cheaper.

I’ve been on several of these presentations and even bought into the first one I went to. BIG mistake!!! I’ve since learned how to be as hard nosed with a no as they are with their pitch. I tell them up front they have only 90 minutes that I agreed to and I check my watch frequently. When it’s up, I tell them they’re done and collect my gift. Also if they don’t ask prior to their pitch, when they try to make the sell by asking how we normally vacation, I tell them we own a camper and that usually shuts them right down!

How does the free 2 roundtrip airfare in Us work for attending the 90-minute presentation? Is it difficult to get reservations? I assume you must pay a deposit? Does anyone have real experience with this?

' src=

Wow, if there was any doubt about the about the money these people make on these things, just look at the comments! Yikes!

We’ve had success with Wyndham. Recently sat through a presentation and got a future free week at a timeshare. I think it helped that we were staying there with current owners (my in-laws). Wyndham frequently has freebies like this, but it’s usually more like a free weekend. The free week was pretty sweet.

How We Survived A Timeshare Presentation & Got A Free Cruise Vacation Without Buying Any Timeshares

Photo of author

By Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez

Sitting through a 4-hour timeshare presentation for free vacation gifts was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. But we did it to get a free cruise for two -- which we enjoyed!

If you’ve never been to a timeshare presentation and you’re thinking about attending one for the free gift, be warned — you’ll probably never know what a high-pressure sales experience really is until you’ve been to a timeshare presentation!

It may have been easier walking into a car dealership flashing $20,000 cash in my hands and negotiating that dreaded onslaught of ambitious car salesmen than dealing with the series of cunning marketing professionals who ran the timeshare seminar I attended with my fiancée.

This Orlando free cruise timeshare presentation we sat through was a harrowing sales experience that felt like the longest 4 hours of our lives.

But we did get the free cruise! So read on…

Why We Went To A Timeshare Seminar

We were at a bridal show when a vendor for a major cruise line approached us to see if we wanted to attend a timeshare presentation — in return for a free cruise AND free tickets to a professional basketball game in Orlando.

Ordinarily, I would’ve passed on the deal right away. But I’ve heard about these free vacation timeshare seminars for what seems like my whole life, and I thought, “Let’s see what they’re all about.” If nothing else, I knew the experience — good or bad — would make for an interesting story that I could blog about and share with others.

We had to give a $30 refundable cash deposit to attend — with the promise that if we showed up to the timeshare presentation, we would get back the money and also get vouchers for a free cruise for 2 people plus those pro basketball game tickets.

Would we really receive the free cruise? And get our $30 back, too?

I thought the experience was worth the risk. So, we went all in and showed up at the vacation club in Orlando, Florida at 10 AM on a Friday for the free cruise timeshare presentation.

NOTE: Timeshares are often rebranded as “vacation clubs” or “vacation ownership plans.”

The Timeshare Sales Pitch That Went On And On…

We walked into the vacation club office (located on the site of a major Orlando resort) and were immediately greeted by friendly concierge staff.

We sat down in the lobby as directed, and just a few minutes later, Mr. Salesman (as I’ll call him) kindly greeted us.

See EXACTLY what our timeshare presentation for a free cruise was like -- almost word for word!

We shook each other’s hands, and then he took us upstairs to a loft area with about a dozen 4-seat round tables .

It looked like a casual café dining area, but it sounded more like a nightclub — because they had fast-paced calypso music playing at a volume just loud enough that we had to speak up a little to talk to anybody farther than a few feet away.

Already, I realized what was going on here… They were setting the stage for a fast close on some tropical vacation deals !

Mr. Salesman proceeded to tell us, “I know you’re here for a free cruise, but will you keep an open mind about this vacation plan?”

My fiancée and I agreed we’d be open to hearing his sales pitch and made polite conversation with Mr. Salesman, who told us a bit about his life story. He soon started showing us pictures of him and his kids having fun on various vacation getaways. Hmm…  looks like he was trying to build an emotional connection with us, his potential customers.

Before long, he knew that I’m a journalist and my fiancée is a certified nursing assistant, and that we spend a few thousand bucks or so each year enjoying road trips. (That was my first mistake — telling him we spend any money on vacations on a regular basis.)

“What would you say if you took that same amount of money and guaranteed that NOT ONLY you and your fiancée could stay in a fancy timeshare, but that the next 4 generations of your family will ALSO have access to this flexible plan?”

I’m thinking to myself, “Wha…? 5 generations?”

“Your great-great grandkids who you’ll never even meet will be thanking you both if you choose this plan,” he went on to say. (No joke.)

By this point I was looking for the door. But I kept telling myself, "All I've got to do is say 'no' at the end."

Of course, the first thing I’m thinking to myself is “Gosh, how depressing. He’s trying to sell me a plan for the great-great grandkids who I’ll probably never meet ?” Then, I wondered, “Will this timeshare company even still be around a century from now?”

I later found out this type of plan is called an inherited timeshare — it’s basically a timeshare contract that can last up to 99 years and can be very difficult to sell or otherwise get rid of .

I also discovered through some basic research that inherited timeshares can be a nightmare for those hypothetical, yet-to-be-born great-great grandkids to handle. I can almost hear their sarcasm now, “Yeah, thanks a LOT, Great-Great Grandparents!”

And so the elaborate sales pitch went on, and we learned that the program has like 3 tiers — one where we buy into X points per year, another for Y, and a third for Z .

In this plan, certain timeshares use a given number of points. Choose wisely and you might be able to use those points on a few different vacations each year. “I think where you guys travel a few times per year you’ll definitely want “Y.”

He then asked, “How much do you think that would cost?”

I looked to my fiancée and back to Mr. Salesman and I joked, “Um… like $80,000?”

He replied, “Well, we’ll get to that in a minute…”

Apparently 1 minute in the timeshare seminar world means about 2 hours — because somehow this tableside chat kept going until noon, with a rundown on the plan’s flexibility, the number of options, etc.

Then came mention of the additional fees associated with keeping this plan alive for 5 generations. It’s $900 per year to activate your points, Mr. Salesman explains. “Oh, a one-time fee?” I asked. “No, that’s per year, but that’s far less than you spend already on your road trips.”

He then led us up from the table and walked us outdoors to a golf cart. “I’m going to show you the types of places you’ll be staying in,” he said, whisking us at a brisk 12 miles per hour to a timeshare unit similar to the ones advertised in the program. “And this is a 3-star place. The ones available in our plan are 4- and 5-star timeshares,” he added.

We reached our destination and proceeded up to a 4th-floor suite. “It’s got a private kitchen, 2 bedrooms — you can fit up to 10 people in here,” he said, opening up the door to the showroom. “Remember the places where you’ll be staying are even better than this ,” he said.

Frankly, the place he showed us wasn’t too bad. But I couldn’t help but think I’d have no trouble finding similar rooms in a resort community for a competitive rate and without that century-long commitment .

“Your great-great grandkids are gonna thank you,” he said, taking us around the 2-bedroom suite.

“How big is your family?” he asked my fiancée as we look around the suite. She told Mr. Salesman about her big family and many siblings — which he jumped on right away. “Imagine bringing them here. Can you just see the look on their faces when they step in here?” he asked her, leading us into a tropical-themed bedroom.

The rest of the time in the timeshare showroom went this way — no longer involving just us, but also all of our family and those future great-great grandkids who he says we’ll never meet.

By this point, the only door I was looking for was the exit from this high-pressure sales experience. “All I’ve got to do is say ‘no’ at the end,” I kept telling myself.

For some reason, I kept thinking of Nancy Reagan and her “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign in the ’80s. However, just saying “no” wasn’t going to be so easy at this timeshare presentation.

Almost 3 hours into it, and we were ready for this timeshare seminar to be over with!

Where’s The Exit Door?

By this point, we were getting to the 3-hour mark in what was supposed to be a 2-hour sales seminar . Even Mr. Salesman said it was getting late in the day (nearly 1 PM) and time to move on.

“OK, well thank you for showing us around,” I told him.

“Let’s head back to the sales center,” he said, motioning us back to the golf cart.

This is where the timeshare seminar went from being drawn out but polite to, “Get me the heck outta’ here… PLEASE!”

We headed back to that roundtable again — a little more tired and sweaty for the wear (after all, it’s January in Florida and a hot 75 degrees). Basically, we were presented those 3 timeshare contract options again: X, Y, or Z.

But this time, Mr. Salesman quoted us prices. No need to go into the messy details here, but the most basic plan began at $15,000. “You know, I just bought a car for $15,000, and now we’re looking to buy a house,” I informed him. “I don’t think the bank’s going to like me spending another 15 grand on a vacation package before buying a home.”

“But it’s a timeshare. And it’s for 5 generations,” he insisted.

“Look, I’ve got really good credit, and I don’t think buying a timeshare is the best idea right now,” I explained (assuming this is what he needed to hear to know that we were simply not interested).

Like clockwork, Mr. Salesman brings over his supervisor. “Hi, I’m Mr Supervisor, how are you?” he asked, extending us a handshake as he sat down across from us at the table. “I hear you guys are interested in buying Plan X.”

My patience was growing thin… “Actually, no, we’re not interested in buying anything. You see, I just bought a car for $15,000 — which I didn’t even plan on buying, but my old car quit and I needed something I can travel long distances in. We’re also about to buy a house, and there’s no way I’m ruining my credit now to buy a vacation plan.”

He countered, “It’s a timeshare plan.”

“I know, and I’m in no position to buy one now — we aren’t even married yet, and we need to get hitched and buy a home first before we do something like this together,” I affirmed, lovingly looking over toward my fiancée, who was sitting beside me.

“Yeah, man — but ‘happy wife, happy life,'” he said, smiling at my fiancée. He then pulled out photos of him and his  bikini-clad fiancée soaking up the sun in Mexico, the Caribbean, and several other balmy destinations.

Then my fiancée spoke up… “I don’t really believe in that cliché, ‘happy wife, happy life,'” she said. “Happiness goes two ways, and we are about to get married and buy a house.”

Mr. Supervisor smirked, probably miffed that he wasn’t going get a sale by using his typical spiel. “Look, if you sign up today, how about we double your points during the first year?” he asked. “We’ll even give you the first year of membership free ,” he added.

“You mean the $900 annual points activation?” I asked.

“No, the $250 membership fee,” he replied.

“You mean there are point activation fees AND an annual membership fee?” I asked.

“Oh, yes — but don’t worry, all of this and the $15,000 will pay for itself in just the first few years as you guys go on vacations and use your points. Remember, this plan lasts 5 generations.”

By this point, whatever patience I still had after wading through all of this was pretty much gone. “Look, I know this is probably a good deal for those who have the money, but we’re in no position to sign this contract and pretty much ruin my credit score with an inquiry and a $15,000 purchase on top of that.”

Just when I thought THAT was going to end the conversation, Mr. Supervisor said, “Well, we can do in-house financing — that way there’s no credit pull!”

“Look, we’re not signing the contract,” I insisted. “Nothing. I’m signing my name on nothing . It’s been almost 4 hours now and we were told this would be a 2-hour seminar,” I told Mr. Supervisor — not angrily, but clearly ticked off at the endless path we seemed to be going on here. “I’m ready to leave.”

Mr. Supervisor pulled out what I presume was Plan D from his proverbial hip pocket. “So, I told you we’d double the points, right?” Before I could even answer back… “I’ve got to keep this quiet, I don’t want the boss to hear, but what if we knock this down to $9,500? Lowest I can go.”

I felt like I was talking to a brick wall that had 2 mouths and no ears . “Sir, look — we’re not buying anything. Can we please call it a day here?” And a day it nearly was… The clock got past 2 PM, and there was still no end in sight to this timeshare presentation for a free cruise.

Mr. Supervisor must’ve signaled to Mr. Boss to come out and close the deal or something, because before long another guy came walking up to the table. Mr. Supervisor sneaked off and Mr. Boss sat down. “Hi, I’m [Mr. Boss], good to meet you.”

“You, too, sir,” I kindly returned, “but I’ve already told Mr. Salesman and Mr. Supervisor that we’re not interested in buying any timeshare plans. We’re about to buy a house and…”

You’ll never believe what came out of his mouth next!

“No way!” he said. “I also manage a realty group here in Orlando. Give me a call sometime and we’ll talk about getting you guys set with a good mortgage.”

No exaggeration — all of this actually happened.

Now the guy was trying to sell us a timeshare AND a house! Were we the unassuming “victims” in a  Candid Camera  skit or something?

I became incredibly frustrated with the sales techniques used in this timeshare presentation for a free cruise!

I really don’t know what other polite thing I could’ve said at this point but, “No, thank you, I’ve already got a credit union lined up.” (I did — so no lying there.)

“Look, you’re getting married soon, right?” Mr. Boss asked. “Yes…” I hesitatingly replied. “I’ll throw in X points more — so you can have a free honeymoon . That will leave you more money for buying the house.”

What was I to say? These guys had played on more emotions than should be legal. “Sir, listen, we appreciate the offers — thank you — but for the last time, we are NOT buying any timeshare plans . Can we please wrap this up now? It’s been 4 hours, and your representatives told us it would be 2. This is enough .”

Mr. Boss stood up from the table and stormed out of the room, and I heard him mutter under his breath, “I can’t believe this — total waste of time.”

Wow… How professional.

We were escorted downstairs to the main lobby by Mr. Salesman in a somber fashion to the front desk, where we were issued a voucher for our free cruise and pro basketball tickets .

Of course, the sales pitch didn’t quite end there…

The guy who issued our vouchers asked if we could supply the names, email addresses, and phone numbers of 10 people that we’d like to invite to go through the same timeshare presentation for a free cruise.

“No thank you,” I said, mumbling to myself, “there’s no one I despise enough to put them through the 4 hours of misery we just experienced.”

We got our $30 back, too.

Are Timeshare Seminars A Scam?

I’m no financial guru, so I won’t spend much time talking about the cost of buying a timeshare versus not buying one. Whether or not you should buy a timeshare is something only you and your financial advisor can decide.

I have a few family members and several friends who have (or at one time  had ) timeshares — some seem to like them, others not so much .

Here’s what I will say…

From the info I picked up through this “free cruise with timeshare presentation,” it sounds like you’ve got to count on being able to take a vacation pretty often to make it worth your while over the long haul. And that’s assuming you can take enough time off from your job.

And then there’s the amount of money it would cost in keeping up the timeshare plan  that we were advertised. These costs include:

  • Activating the points ($900 per year)
  • Staying a current member of the program ($250 per year)
  • Booking a trip ($200 and up per vacation)

Even then, you’re confined to using only the timeshare suites that are in-network — not really beneficial to you if you’re one who likes to backpack through little-known places and stay in independent mountain lodges or rugged hostels.

I can’t say the timeshare seminar is necessarily a scam. Nor can I say it’s a terrible idea to buy a 99-year timeshare contract.

We did get those free cruise tickets, the pro basketball game tickets, and our deposit back, in full — so we got what we were promised.

The good news is we got the free gift (a cruise for 2) for sitting through the timeshare presentation. Cheers!

But the timeshare plan itself certainly wasn’t for us. Not at that time. Not before buying a home and saving for other things — like fixing a broken water heater, repairing a leaky roof, or handling any of the other things that might come up after we become homeowners.

Not to mention the fact that the grueling 4-hour timeshare presentation was emotionally and physically draining — probably not worth the free gifts.

I just hope those great-great grandkids won’t be too disappointed that we turned down a 99-year-long contract on an inherited timeshare.

Should You Attend A Timeshare Presentation For Free Vacation Gifts?

We did it solely for the free cruise.

If you think you have the willpower (and patience) to sit through a free cruise timeshare presentation like I’ve described above, then go for it!

Lots of people repeatedly sit through timeshare seminars — time after time — just for the free gift .

We have sat through several timeshare presentations just to get the ‘freebies’. The hardest sales pitches were from local camping clubs and we walked away with sleeping bags and hats. Lousy pay for four hours of our time. In Mexico, we received a free rental car for one week along with a free breakfast. The pitch there wasn’t too hard to say no to, but the pressure was still hot and heavy. The harder they push, the more we dig our heels in and say no. ~ eubie12 at The Penny Hoarder

I’m a Florida native, a roller coaster junkie, and a frequent traveler. (Long road trips are my favorite.) Born and raised in Tampa, I grew up visiting Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. I authored the book Busch Gardens Tampa Bay: Images of Modern America, which details the colorful history of the Busch Gardens theme park. As a local historian, I’ve also written about other popular landmarks and attractions for a variety of publications. Here, on this Travel Guide, I like sharing little-known facts and fun stuff about all the places I’ve been — so you will have a good idea of what those places are like and what you should know before you go. How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes

Sharing is caring!

The secret for how to take a free vacation? Travel hacking!

I’m sure that you’ve heard about or been offered a supposedly free vacation if you’ll just come down and listen to a timeshare presentation for a few hours or enter one of those sweepstakes online to win a vacation.

With the former, you’ve got to put up with high-pressure sales tactics aimed to get you to shell out thousands of dollars in order to get your “free vacation” and with the latter you’ve got about a one in a bazillion chance of actually winning something since they are just trying to collect your info to sell you stuff… Then, of course, there are even more nefarious offers of free travel or trips that end up being scams that swindle you out of money.

But what if there was a way to take a free vacation without ANY of that garbage? Well, there definitely is. With a bit of foresight and pre-planning, you and your loved ones can save thousands of dollars (literally) on your next vacation… No strings attached and no tricks.

These tactics work for some of the most sought after destinations in the world, including the big expensive global metropolises or beachfront resorts in tropical locales.

The secret for how to take a free vacation? Travel hacking!

A Recent Free Vacation

I’ve been traveling the world continuously for the past few years, which means that I have got to travel on the cheap by necessity. Thankfully, full-time travel is much more affordable than a short vacation… But I’ve also used this strategy to take my own free vacation (yeah, a vacation from my normal travel lifestyle, haha) and in the processed saved thousands on a single trip.

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

One big free vacation was a trip to New York City with my girlfriend, which is obviously among the most expensive destinations on earth, and yet we managed to pay nothing for five nights of lodging in a beautiful hotel in downtown Manhattan (steps from the World Trade Center and other attractions), rather than staying at the far outer edge of some other borough to save money.

The hotel was quite large for Manhattan standards, including a small kitchen with a full-size fridge (perfect for saving even more money), had an excellent view of surrounding skyscrapers like the Woolworth Building, and even offered up a full, hot buffet breakfast every morning. So it was free and included a full meal to start our day!

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

Needless to say, we were NOT staying in some dump… On the contrary, it was quite a nice hotel, even if it wasn’t five-stars, and is just the kind of thing that most people are looking for while on vacation, even free ones!

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

Not only that but we also managed to get free flights to and from New York City as well… I should asterisk that free flight as being almost free because we did have to pay some taxes and fees which totaled about $100 per person, but still, that’s basically free when it comes to flying! The first flight was domestic between Seattle and NYC, and the second was international between NYC and Medellin, Colombia.

So, in the end, we saved well over $2,500 on the hotel room for five nights, and we saved another $1,200 in total for the flights to and from NYC for the both of us.

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

In total, we saved at least $3,700 on ONE vacation! Of course, we had expenses on the ground, but thankfully there are plenty of awesome things to see and do when in New York City on a budget, and we only spent around $500 (including eating in airports, ground transport, and such). That’s normally what people spend for two nights in a hotel in NYC. With the flights, it was $700 in total.

So, to wrap up, we got five nights at a nice hotel in Manhattan, two round trip flights, and six days to explore as much of NYC as we could for just $700… Not too shabby! These folks took a $6,000 vacation for free! It’s totally doable…

How to Take a Free Vacation

Interested in how you could take your own similarly free vacation (or cheap if we count on the ground expenses)… Well, travel hacking is the key element to free travel… It is something that I’ve talked about a lot on this website and basically involves racking up points or miles on in order to take a free vacation. We will be covering the basics here of how to do it here.

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

In order to get a free vacation, you will need to identify the best travel credit cards currently on offer… There are offers for airline credit cards, hotel credit cards, and flexible credit cards (where you can transfer the points). The offers in the United States are hard to rival, but there are similar sorts of offers in many other countries that have well-established credit card marketplaces and competition.

A few of my recent favorite travel hacking credit cards are:

  • Barclay’s AAdvantage Aviator – Airline specific
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred – Flexible points
  • Chase Marriott Bonvoy CC – Hotel specific

I’ve used all three of these cards recently in order to score HUGE bonuses. The Barclay’s card is about the easiest possible travel hack ever and is worth doing just to get your feet wet, or just to get a taste of the whole travel hacking thing and how awesome it is.

The Marriot Credit Card is a pretty solid deal too, beyond the initial sign-up bonus which will get you a number of free nights (it got us almost all the way to five free nights in Manhattan), you get an annual free night certificate. You can use that certificate on some pretty high-end properties, like when I used it at the Medellin Marriott Hotel with all sorts of cool benefits like hotel lounge access with FREE wine and food (in addition to things like the normal hotel buffet breakfast).

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

A few other notable cards that I haven’t utilized yet are Capital One Venture Rewards, Bank of America Travel Rewards card, so check them out too. But I’d say the easiest first-time travel hack is the Barclay’s card , and the best of three I mentioned earlier is the Chase Sapphire Preferred because of the flexibility offered by the points (which you can use for either flights or hotels).

Note: The Chase Sapphire Reserve card may be better by the numbers but only if you are already a frequent traveler due to the $550 annual fee, for the casual or first-time user, the Preferred is a much better choice.

Read More: Best Travel Credit Cards

So, you’re going to want to target ONE of those credit cards to start with because you will need to meet a minimum spend (often $3,000 within three months) in order to get the sign-up bonus. Then after doing one, you can grab another card. There are even “Trifectas” where you get three cards among one provider to maximize your points — highly recommended!

The goal is to spend NOTHING more than you would have otherwise spent. That means you should concentrate all of your normal personal spending on this card and you should plan your application before you have any major upcoming purchases. There are a few other little tricks to being able to meet the minimum spend, but I’ve already written a lot about that:

Read More: Credit Card Minimum Spend Tricks

How Long Until Your Free Vacation?

So, if you targeted an airline credit card to start with, you should have met the minimum spend requirement within three months. Congrats! You just got a free flight.

You should then turn your focus to a hotel credit card next to secure your accommodations. The deal is exactly the same here, just concentrate all your spending on this new credit card and within another three months, you will have met the minimum.

So within six months total time, you can easily rack up enough points and miles from travel hacking in order to score a free vacation. In this case, the free travel will cover both lodging and flights.

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

If you are married or in a relationship, you can both do these tactics simultaneously with the same credit cards (double up on airline miles or hotel points) or focus on separate aspects (one doing an airline credit card and one doing a hotel credit card). This is a surefire way to turn “two free nights” into “four free nights” instantly.

If you have kids or other family members that you will be traveling with, then you may need to rack up considerably more points or miles, and thus may need more lead time, but six to twelve months (leaving some time to actually plan the details of a trip after getting the points) should be enough time for almost anybody to score their next free vacation, saving thousands of dollars in the process.

I am always trying to travel on a budget and save money, which usually means I don’t spring for luxury type things… The big exception, of course, is when travel hacking and scoring these free vacations. Thanks to this approach I’ve been able to fly first class for free, enjoy the VIP airport lounges, and stay in hotels that normally cost more than $400 per night (something I would never do if I was paying out of pocket).

As you can see, travel hacking is useful not only for general travel and saving money but also for those who would like a little taste of luxury but don’t really have the bank account to back it up.

Is It Worth It?

Many people have asked me whether the hassle or effort is worth it when it comes to travel hacking, and my answer is always a resounding YES! First of all, there really isn’t that much effort to it… I’ve already told you about a few of the best travel hacking credit cards available. The next big step is to just focus all your spending on that one credit card, which may require you to go in and update some of your regular monthly bills online.

From there it is just a matter of keeping tabs on how much you are spending each month on that card (I use Mint.com ) so you don’t fall short. That’s it in terms of the initial part. I also put a reminder on my calendar to cancel the card before the end of the year if it isn’t one I want to keep (a five to ten-minute phone call).

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

In terms of booking the flight, that is basically the same process as you book any other flight, you use the airline search portal and just click on Use Miles or Award Reservation (different places use different phrasing), then the results come back with the price in miles instead of dollars. If you’ve never used award miles, don’t worry, it is super straightforward. If you’ve bought a flight online, you can book award miles.

If someone like me who has a very low cost of living and low income can take advantage of travel hacking, then there is no doubt that the vast majority of Americans (who have higher incomes and expenses) can much more easily take advantage of travel hacking and also do so much more regularly, if they wanted. For me, I do have to plan a little more carefully in terms of when I time my credit card applications (right before big expenses).

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes travel-tips-and-resources, travel-hacking, travel

So there you have it, a no-nonsense guide to how you can easily earn a free vacation with none of those scams, tricks, timeshares, or other junk that usually comes with a “free vacation”. No thanks, I’ll stick to my way. If you get started now, then I have no doubt that you will be able to get your free vacation within the next twelve months.

Travel hacking is the easiest way by far to score a free vacation is something that I recommend to everyone that loves traveling… Once you go free, you’ll never back.

A free vacation for $700?? I guess we have very different definitions of the word free.

' src=

Well, it’s all basically free in terms of travel, but you’ll be hard pressed if you want to eat and do stuff once you get there… You can’t even eat for free if you stay home either.

I can’t find a free room after testing this… IDK what’s smmmmmmmmmmmm

Mayan Riviera Timeshare Promotions

The Mexican Riviera

The Mexican Riviera is one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations for visitors worldwide and covers almost the entire east coast of the Yucatan peninsula. If not the most popular place in the Riviera, Cancun, located in the peninsula's northern area, receives thousands of visitors each year. Cancun's hotel zone is a strip of land about 14 miles long located between the Nichupte Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. It offers World-Class, All-Inclusive Hotel Accommodations, and Five-Star restaurants and nightclubs. Tourists looking for a more secluded area will find paradise in Playa del Carmen's beaches, located about a 40-minute drive south of Cancun. The Yucatan peninsula is also home to spectacular archeological sites like Tulum, Chichén Itzá, Cobá, and Ek Balam. Another interesting area to visit in Playa del Carmen is Xcaret, where you can experience great adventures exploring underground rivers, archeological sites, coral reef aquariums, Aviaries, cenotes, and much more.

So, what is Timeshare?

Timeshare or Vacation Ownership is the most popular form of fractional ownership of a vacation property.

You own the timeshare condo along with other families and share the use of the property for one or two weeks out of the year.

When you own a share of a Timeshare condo, you only pay a fraction of the total cost. You share the cost of maintenance with other owners, thus taking ownership of a vacation property, way more affordable for the average family.

Popular types of Vacation Ownership or Timeshare are Fixed-Weeks, Floating-Weeks, and the Points System.

The Timeshare Tour Seminar / Sales Presentation

During your stay at the resort of your choice, you will be invited to attend an informative preview presentation or Timeshare seminar of the resort's Vacation Club, lasting an average of 90 minutes to 2 hours.

The presentation is conducted on a one-on-one basis, meaning that one representative will be assigned to show you and your family the benefits of the program.

A complimentary breakfast is provided on the day of the tour. Should you decided to purchase a Timeshare condo, financing is provided by the resorts, and most resorts include a purchase incentive.

What to know

  • How does Timeshare Nation make money if the timeshares are really free? This may be our most asked question...Timeshare Nation is paid to find a new owner for a timeshare, which means we do not have to charge anything to our customers. In all cases, the closing costs and resort transfer fees are covered, which allows us to give the timeshares for $0.
  • How long does it take to be the new owner? The timeline is dependent on many things; how fast the resort transfer agent receives the paperwork, how fast the deed is drafted and signed, and how fast the resort acknowledges the new ownership. The industry average is 30-60 days. Some resorts take longer, so please don't expect the ownership changes to happen in a week or two. You will be able to keep informed of the progress directly from the resort transfer agent working on your transfer, or you may find out your status at anytime by calling us at 800 269 5574.
  • How do I take ownership? What are the next steps? Taking ownership is easy, but there are three things needed in order to start the process: Click Reserve Now on any timeshare we have. Proceed to fill out the reservation form so we can send you the $0 offer letter. Once you complete the $0 offer letter, you will also be required to send a copy of your photo ID. Your offer letter will be sent to your email used when you click Reserve Now, and is able to be digitally signed. You may see a sample of the Offer Letter & Buyer Information Form HERE: Once the Offer Letter is executed, you will start working with the resort transfer agent on any other documents the resort may require.
  • You said the timeshare is free, but are there any additional fees?" There are NO additional fees to take ownership. The only expense is the ongoing maintenance fee, which is paid directly to the resort or HOA. All of our properties have the maintenance fee already paid in the current year, and you won't have to pay anything until maintenance fees are due for the next year. In some cases, the next year maintenance fees have been paid, too. Some resorts do require the new owner to pay a portion of the upcomming maintenance fee during the transfer process.
  • Are the timeshares really free? YES. The timeshares are 100% free. You will not pay any transfer fees, tax, or anything else to take ownership of our timeshares. You will be working directly with a resort transfer agent for the transfer of ownership and 100% of their costs are covered. Your only cost is to pay the ongoing maintenance fees for your future use. All resort maintenance fees are listed on each timeshare on Timeshare Nation.
  • Who currently owns the timeshares? All of the timeshares on TimeshareNation.com are owned by their current owners. Timeshare Nation only markets timeshares on behalf of 3rd parties or resorts.
  • This sounds too good to be true, what is the catch?" Probably our second most asked question...the best answer is to consider "how and why" Timeshare Nation has free timeshares. We find new owners for timeshares so maintenance fees can continue to be paid. Maintenance fees are very important for resort operations, and they simply cannot go unpaid. Therefore, our true goal is to find maintenance fee payers.
  • How much are the resort transfer fees? Resort transfer fees range from $0 and up. You can confirm the resort transfer fee directly with the resort, and it will also be provided from the resort on the resort estoppel.
  • Can I have more than one? Our goal is to find homes for these timeshares, and make sure it is done with integrity. This means, we are looking for people that want to use the timeshare and understand what they are getting.
  • Do you have any other properties than what are listed? We normally keep a large list of additional availability that you can access. However to access the additional inventory you can see a spreadsheet here.

Home articles, the ultimate guide to marriott vacation timeshare resales.

Published in Home Articles

If you’re looking for ways to enjoy great vacations without spending a fortune, timeshare resales might be the answer. Marriott vacation timeshare resales offer a way to explore beautiful destinations while saving money compared to buying a new timeshare.

This guide will walk you through the essential things you need to know about Marriott vacation timeshare resales. Read on and learn more.

What is a Timeshare Resale?

A timeshare resale is when someone sells their existing timeshare property to another individual. Essentially, it’s a way for people to transfer their ownership rights to a vacation property. Purchasing a resale can be a more affordable option compared to buying timeshare directly from the developer.

Many timeshare owners sell their ownership due to changed circumstances, such as financial situations or lifestyle changes. Buying a timeshare resale can open new vacation opportunities for you and your family. This makes it a popular choice for travelers who love to return to the same place year after year.

Benefits of Timeshare Resales

There are lots of good things about buying a timeshare resale instead of paying full price. A big reason is that it saves money. When you buy a resale, you usually pay a lot less than what it cost at first.

Plus, you still get everything a normal timeshare gives you, like staying at resorts and fun stuff to do at many vacation spots. For people who are watching their spending, timeshare resales are a great chance to save and still have fun.

Where to Find Marriott Timeshare Resales

Finding where to buy Marriott resales is easier than you might think. Multiple online platforms specialize in listing these properties, such as resale websites and auction sites. Additionally, you can often find listings on real estate websites that focus on vacation properties.

Another good option is to check the official Marriott website, as they occasionally list resales or provide resources. Networking within travel groups or forums can yield helpful information and leads. Through these channels, you can discover attractive offers and set the stage for your next vacation adventure.

How to Buy a Timeshare Resale

Buying a timeshare resale involves a similar process to purchasing a home. After finding a property you’re interested in, you’ll need to make an offer. Ensure you research the current market value to negotiate a fair price.

Once the seller accepts your offer, you’ll need to get any necessary paperwork together. This typically includes a purchase agreement and title transfer. It may also require guidance from a real estate attorney or licensed agent to ensure a smooth transaction.

Understanding Maintenance Fees

When you purchase a timeshare, you will be responsible for annual maintenance fees. These fees help cover the costs associated with property upkeep and maintenance. Make sure to check the fee amount before buying a resale, as they can vary.

It’s also wise to ask about any special assessments. This can include additional charges related to property improvements or unplanned repairs. Understanding these fees helps you determine the overall cost of ownership.

Tips for Financing Your Purchase

If you’re looking to finance your timeshare resale, explore your options before making a decision. Many banks offer loans specifically for timeshares. Additionally, some sellers may provide financing options directly, allowing you to pay over time.

Before selecting a financing option, compare interest rates and terms. Read the fine print to understand repayment terms, fees, and interest charges. A well-informed decision can help you save money in the long run.

Know the Resale Market Value

Understanding the resale market for timeshares is crucial. Research the current market value for Marriott timeshares similar to the one you’re interested in. This will help you determine a fair price for the resale.

It’s essential to keep in mind that the resale value is generally lower than the original purchase price. Factors such as location, size, and availability will influence the value. By knowing the market trends, you can make smart decisions when it comes to buying a timeshare.

Rental Options for Timeshare Owners

Did you know that many timeshare owners rent out their properties when they aren’t using them? This can be a fantastic way to help cover those maintenance fees. Some timeshare resale owners even list their vacations for rent on platforms like Airbnb or Vrbo.

If you’re considering buying a timeshare resale, ask about rental options. This can often help make your purchase more affordable and flexible. Turning your timeshare into a rental could be a win-win situation for your finances.

Understanding Exchange Programs

If you purchase a Marriott timeshare resale, you may have access to exchange programs. These programs allow you to trade your timeshare for a stay at a different resort. This can expand your vacation options and provide variety in your travel experiences.

It’s essential to learn more about which exchange programs are available. The most famous program is Interval International. Connecting with other owners can help you find resources to maximize your vacation opportunities.

Legal Aspects of Timeshare Resales

Before buying a timeshare resale, familiarize yourself with the legal aspects involved. Understand the contract and any financing agreements you may enter into. Be sure to consult with an experienced attorney if you have questions about your rights or obligations.

Additionally, ensure you have access to the property’s deed after the sale. This verifies your ownership and protects your investment. Taking these legal steps will safeguard you during the resale process.

The Importance of Research Before Buying

Finally, it’s crucial to spend time researching before making a timeshare purchase. Familiarize yourself with the specific Marriott property you’re considering. Look for reviews from other owners and ground yourself in the community.

Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional. An experienced real estate agent can guide you throughout the process. This will ensure that you’re making a well-informed decision when it comes to vacation timeshare ownership.

Experience Endless Adventures with Marriott Vacation Timeshare Resales

Understanding Marriott vacation timeshare resales is key to making an informed decision. By learning about the different aspects of purchasing and simply enjoying your timeshare, you can create lasting memories.

If you’re ready to take the plunge, remember to research and weigh your options carefully. Take your time, and soon, you’ll be on your way to experiencing the joy of vacation timeshares. Happy travels!

Hilton grand vacations inc. (hgv): this vacation stock is a good addition to your portfolio now.

We recently compiled a list of the 13 Best Vacation Stocks to Buy Now .   In this article, we are going to take a look at where Hilton Grand Vacations Inc. (NYSE:HGV) stands against the other vacation stocks.

In early 2024, The World Travel & Tourism Council projected a strong year for travel & tourism, with the sector’s global economic contribution expected to touch an all-time high of $11.1 trillion. As per the global tourism body’s 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR), travel & tourism should be able to contribute an additional $770 billion over its previous record. WTTC anticipates that ~142 countries, of the 185 analysed, are expected to outperform previous national records.

WTTC forecasts a strong future for the next decade, characterized by healthy growth and unmatched career opportunities. By 2034, the sector is expected to supercharge the global economy with a staggering $16 trillion, accounting for ~11.4% of the entire economic landscape.

Travel and Vacationing in 2024 and Beyond

In 2024, the travel sector continues to break boundaries. Mastercard Economics Institute expects that this momentum will continue, with consumers prioritizing meaningful experiences and earmarking more of their budgets to travel.

Apart from air travel, cruise vacationing saw extraordinary growth, outpacing 2019 records. Through 1Q 2024, the US travel story was characterized by contrasting outbound and inbound dynamics. By November 2022, the US travelers vacationing overseas (excluding Canada and Mexico) outpaced 2019 levels. As of March 2024, the US travel overseas stood at ~20% above that level.

In comparison, the visitor traffic arrivals in the US from abroad were ~6% below 2019 levels as of March 2024. At this pace, the Economics Institute estimated that foreign passenger traffic in the US is expected to surpass 2019 levels later in 2024.

As per the Conference Board survey of consumer attitudes and buying plans in the US, the data as of April 2024 demonstrates that around 1 in 5 of the survey respondents expect to travel internationally in the upcoming 6 months. This was the record high since the survey began in February 1967. During this similar time in 2020, only 1 in every 20 Americans wanted to travel.

Recent Trends in Vacations

A big trend for 2024 remains the preference for experiential traveling over traditional celebrations for achieving some milestones. A recent survey demonstrated that ~40% of respondents continue to plan vacations for celebrating milestone occasions in 2024. One major shift in travel trends is the concept of a journey as the final destination. While travelers are seeking rail journeys along with epic boat trips, some travelers are opting for extended stopovers in certain destinations. This helps in turning layovers into small vacations.

The Cruise Lines International Association expects that ~82% of those who have cruised are expected to cruise again. The vacation rental market has been pegged at US$99.6 billion in 2023 and should be able to compound at more than 3% between 2024 and 2032 (as per Global Market Insights). This is expected on the back of elevated demand from the younger generation as they seek unique and authentic travel experiences. Notably, millennials and Gen Z are prioritizing experiences rather than material possessions, resulting in an increased demand for engaging and authentic travel.

Therefore, growth in the vacation rental market should stem from the increased use of online booking platforms, advancements in AI-driven property management technology, and the adoption of remote working.

Our methodology

To list the 13 Best Vacation Stocks to Buy Now, we used the Finviz screener to compile a list of 20 stocks catering to relevant industries. We then ranked the stocks in ascending order of their hedge fund sentiment, as of Q2 2024, and chose the following 13 companies.

Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points ( see more details here ).
