Tour of Lombardy 2023: The Route

The riders roll out off Como to tackle the first climb shortly after Asso. It’s the renowned The Madonna del Ghisallo, but not taken from the usual side. This way it’s a gentle warm-up climb – 8.8 kilometres at 3.9%.

The riders decent towards Ballagio before the route continues for tens of kilometres on the shores of Lake Como and then Lake Garlate. The riders are almost in Bergamo when the route turns north in Almenno San Bartolomeo. Which is where the uphill action really kicks in.

The ascent to Roncola is 9.4 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 6.6%. The first and last part are nothing special, but the heart of the climb rises at 8 to 10%. The riders are more than 100 kilometres underway when they reach the village.

The subsequent ascent comes with more friendly gradients. The climb to Berbenno is 6.8 kilometres long and averages 4.6%. It’s a gradual and steady slope.

Back in the valley the route follows the Brembo River upstream for 10 kilometres and just after moving through thermal town San Pellegrino the Passo della Crocetta throws in 11 kilometres at 6,2%. Following a short downhill the road goes up for 1.4 kilometres at 7.1%. A virtually flat section leads onto a 2.5 kilometres climb at 7% Zambla Alta.

The Zambla Alta summit is crested with almost 65 kilometres remaining. The first 25 fly downhill into the valley of the Serio River before the last big climb of the day appears. The Passo di Ganda adds 9.2 kilometres at 7.3% to the mix. The last 3.2 kilometres rise at almost 10%.

Another descent – 16 kilometres – takes the riders back into the Serio valley. It would be easy to continue straight towards the finish on the Viale Roma, but no, there is one last obstacle remaining. With 4,5 kilometres to go the riders tackle the Colle Aperto, a ramp of 1.6 kilometres at 7.9% with the last part on pebble paving

The last 3 kilometres fly down to the line on the Viale Roma in Bergamo.

The route is virtually a carbon copy of the 2021 edition of Il Lombardia. Back then, Tadej Pogacar attacked on the Passo di Ganda. Fausto Masnada rejoined the Slovene on descent before being outclassed on the line.

Il Lombardia reveals 2023 route featuring meaningful route changes

Il Lombardia organizers have revealed the route for 2022, which lacks the presence of some of the race's most iconic climbs, but features the return of others as the finish returns to Como.

The race will feature 253 kilometers this year, making it an incredibly long race with a very high amount of climbing. Unlike last year, the race starts in Bergamo, and features the Passo di Ganda - where the decisive attack happened last year - early on in the race. Heading to Como however, it is also noticeable the disappearance of the Muro di Sormano, the ultra-steep climb is unlikely to make a return (at least anytime soon) due to it's dangerous descent, which has seen several vicious crashes in the last few years which gave way to safety concerns.

The route will hence go through the Madonna del Ghisallo as is traditional, before tackling the final combination of climbs at Civiglio and San Fermo della Bataglia, last used in 2020, where the race will be decided - as has been the case on several editions, with many iconic attacks up and down Civiglio sparking to memory.

The Italian monument will also be the final race in the career of two benchmark riders. One being one of the nation's finest and most successful ever riders Vincenzo Nibali, who's won the race twice throughout his career. On the other side, Alejandro Valverde will also be hanging up his wheels after arriving at the finish in Como, both are expected to receive an exponential amount of attention.

Last year the race was won by Tadej Pogacar, who attacked in the penultimate climb of the race, and then outsprinted Fausto Masnada who had managed to bridge across afterwards.

La saison de cyclisme touche à sa fin mais, samedi, le Tour de Lombardie permettra aux amoureux de vélo de prendre du plaisir devant l'écran. Pour cette course longue de 238 kilomètres, avec plus de 4500 kilomètres de dénivelé positif, le combat s'annonce rude. Les 7 ascensions répertoriées vont faire souffrir les coureurs et creuser les écarts, notamment lors du redoutable Passo di Ganda.

La course débute à 10h30 et sera diffusée sur Eurosport 2. L'arrivée est prévue vers 17h

Les trois favoris de l'édition 2023 sont, comme récemment sur le Tour de France , Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) et Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step). Pogacar, qui a déjà remporté deux fois cette course, vise la passe de trois. Cette année, il a déjà brillé sur le Tour des Flandres et la Flèche Wallonne. En ce qui concerne Roglic, il aura à coeur de réussir une belle course pour son dernier tour de piste chez Jumbo-Visma. Il vient de remporter le Tour d'Émilie devant Tadej Pogacar et sait qu'il peut s'imposer en Italie. Enfn, Remco Evenepoel, qui a terminé permier sur Liège-Bastogne-Liège et la Classica San Sebastian peut affoler les compteurs.

CLASSEMENT. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) a gagné le Tour de Lombardie 2023 ce samedi. Le coureur slovène a inscrit pour la troisième fois d’affilée son nom au palmarès du Monument italien. En solitaire, il l’a largement emporté devant Andrea Bagioli (Soudal Quick-Step) et Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) qui ont réglé le sprint du groupe de contre.

Les premiers mots du vainqueur

"C'est incroyable de revenir ici et de remporter la victoire, savoure Pogacar. Je remercie l'équipe qui a fait un boulot incroyable. Tout s'est déroulé comme on l'avait planifié. Mas a été du même niveau que moi, on a essayé de collaborer."

"Je savais qu'aujourd'hui j'aurais de bonnes jambes. Ma saison est presque parfaite", s'est-il félicité.

C'est également terminé pour Nibali, qui a franchi la ligne d'arrivée pour la dernière fois.

Pour sa dernière course, Alejandro Valverde prend la sixième place.

Victoire de Tadej Pogacar !!!

C'est terminé ! Sans grande surprise, Tadej Pogacar s'impose au sprint face à Enric Mas et réalise le doublé. Il remporte le tour de Lombardie pour la deuxième fois consécutive.

Mikel Landa prend la troisième place.

La victoire devrait se disputer au sprint, un domaine où Pogacar semble largement meilleur.

Contre de Pogacar, Mas lui emboîte le pas.

Gêné par les motos, Enric Mas tente d'en replacer une, Pogacar ne bronche pas.

6 km: Attaque d'Enric Mas

Mas attaque, Pogacar prend sa roue. C'est fini pour Mikel Landa, qui va essayer (encore une fois) de revenir au train.

7 km: San Fermo della Battaglia

C'est parti pour la dernière ascension du jour ! Ils sont trois pour une place. Landa semble être le moins fort.

17 km: Landa fait l'essuie glace

C'est difficile pour Mikel Landa, qui s'accroche mais lâche dès que les deux de devant accélèrent le rythme.

18 km: Pogacar et Mas devant

Ce n'est plus le moment d'aller chercher à boire, le peloton entame l'ascension du Civiglio, place au spectacle.

UAE imprime toujours la cadence, aux côtés de Bora Handsgrohe.

Le peloton va s'attaquer à un gros morceau, avec l'ascension du Civiglio, possiblement le juge de paix de cette étape.

4,2 km à près de 10% de moyenne.

27 km: le peloton bascule

Les coureurs passeront à nouveau sur les pentes de San Fermo della Battaglia en fin de course.

28 km: Plus qu'une vingtaine de coureurs dans le peloton

Alexis Vuillermoz a notamment lâché prise.

29 km: Ascension de San Fermo della Battaglia

UAE reprend les commandes. La course risque de se durcir.

30 km: Cassure dans la descente

Une grosse cassure a divisé le peloton en deux dans la descente. Les principaux favoris n'ont pas été piégés. Pour les coureurs pris au piège, il va falloir rouler pour combler l'écart.

32 km: UAE en retrait

A l'approche de San Fermo de la Battaglia, la team UAE semble se faire un petit peu oublier.

Avant le Civiglio, le peloton va se frotter au San Fermo della Battaglia.

2,7 km, à 7,2% de moyenne.

La prochaine ascension, le Civiglio dans une dizaine de kilomètres, risque de faire de terribles dégâts, surtout si UAE impose le même rythme que dans la Madonna Del Ghisallo.

43 km: Plus qu'une quarantaine de kilomètres pour Nibali et Valverde

46 km: uae domine jumbo visma sur le plan comptable.

Six coureurs de la team UAE sont encore dans le peloton, contre trois pour la Jumbo Visma. Avantage Pogacar de ce point de vue là.

54 km: Julian Alaphilippe s'accroche

Distancé en fin de col, Julian Alaphilippe a fait son retour dans la descente. Il serait cependant étonnant de voir le français jouer un rôle dans le final. Il est en souffrance et il reste des difficultés à gravir.

60 km: Ascension terminée

Le peloton bascule dans la descente, beaucoup de coureurs se sont accrochés. On a vu notamment Julian Alaphilippe être en difficulté en fin d'ascension. Le rythme imposé par UAE en deuxième partie d'ascension a fait des dégâts.

61 km: UAE durcit la course, Jumbo Visma craque

Les coéquipiers de Tadej Pogacar durcisssent la course. Joao Almeida impose un rythme effréné. Harper a lâché, Oomen est en facheuse posture. Jonas Vingegaard pourrait se retrouver seul.

64 km: La pente s'adoucit

Le peloton a fait le plus dur. Les pentes les plus rudes de la Madonna Del Ghisallo sont passées. On entame une portion beaucoup plus facile.

66km: Plus que deux coéquipiers pour Vingegaard

Oomen et Harper sont les deux derniers équipiers de Jonas Vingegaard dans le peloton. La Team UAE donne un coup demain. Les équipes des deux premiers du Tour de France semblent vouloir éviter les attaques dans cette ascension.

66 km: Matej Mohoric distancé !

Le coureur slovène est déjà distancé. Il ne jouera pas la gagne à Côme.

67 km: Jumbo Visma donne le rythme

Les coéquipiers de Jonas Vingegaard impose un rythme élevé au peloton. Pas mal de coureurs peinent à suivre la cadence.

69 km: Ineos se positionne à l'avant

Sans grand favori dans son équipe, Ineos roule. Pour tenter quelque chose dans la Madonna Del Ghisallo ? A surveiller.

Plusieurs coureurs lâchent déjà prise à l'arrière du peloton.

Le peloton longe le lac de Côme

Le peloton longe, depuis plusieurs kilomètres, le lac de Côme. Ce qui donne lieu à de formidables paysages.

71km: échappée terminée

L'échappée est terminée. C'est en un seul morceau que le peloton entame la prochaine difficulté.

76 km: Fin de l'échappée

L'échappée touche à sa fin alors que le peloton approche de la Madonna Del Ghisallo. 8,6km d'ascension à 6,2% de moyenne. Un gros écrémage risque d'avoir lieu, avec pourquoi pas déjà des attaques.

79km: Echappée bientôt terminée

Le peloton fait son retour sur l'échappée, qui compte désormais moins de 0'30 d'avance.

"Je suis confiant", affirme Pogacar

"Il y a beaucoup d'ascenson, cela va se disputer dans le final. C'est une course pour les grimpeurs mais il faudra du punch. Tout peut se passer sur une course d'un jour. Je suis confiant", a déclaré le tenant du titre de l'édition avant de prendre le départ.

84 km: entente catastrophique dans le groupe de tête

On n'arrive pas du tout à s'entendre dans le groupe de tête, qui ne devrait plus resister longtemps au retour du peloton. L'écart fond et les hommes de tête n'ont plus qu' 1'30 d'avance. Ils ont perdu presque 1' en 5 km.

90 km: L'avance du groupe de tête diminue

Le groupe de tête perd (déjà) du terrain sur le peloton. Les favoris pointent désormais à 2'20 des dix hommes de tête.

103 km: Plus aucune difficulté avant un moment

Plus grand chose ne risque de se passer avant une trentaine de kilomètres et l'ascension du Madonna Del Ghisallo. Les coureurs sont dans le "ventre mou" de la course.

110 km: Rien à signaler du côté des favoris

Aucun des favoris n'a encore été piégé. Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Rigoberto Uran, Enric Mas, Romain Bardet et Julian Alaphilippe sont bien au chaud dans le peloton.

Clap de fin pour Valverde et Nibali

Vincenzo Nibali et Alejandro Valverde disputent leur dernière course. Tenteront-ils quelque chose ?

113 km: Dix hommes à l'avant, trois minutes devant le peloton

Un tracé très exigeant

Il faudra être très costaud pour faire la différence sur un parcours sélectif de 253 km entre Bergame et Côme, avec notamment le redoutable Civiglio (4,2 km à 9,7% de moyenne) et la double ascension de San Fermo della Battaglia (2,8 km à 6,6%) dans le final. L'arrivée est prévue vers 17h.

Alaphilippe et Pogacar en principaux favoris

Vainqueur sortant, Tadej Pogacar aborde en favori le Tour de Lombardie, le cinquième et dernier Monument de la saison, où il retrouve Jonas Vingegaard, qui l'a détrôné en juillet sur la Grande Boucle. C'est aussi le jubilé de deux cadors, Alejandro Valverde et Vincenzo Nibali, qui disputent, à respectivement 42 et 37 ans, la dernière course de leur immense carrière. Du côté des Français, en l'absence de David Gaudu et Thibaut Pinot, on compte surtout sur Julian Alaphilippe et Romain Bardet pour cette classique taillée pour les grimpeurs.

Stevie Williams outsprints Julian Alaphilippe to win stage 2 of the Tour of Britain Men and take over the race lead

Williams comes out on top in Redcar against former two-time World Champion

Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) outsprinted Julian Alaphillipe to win stage two of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men in Redcar on Wednesday. The Welshman’s win meant that he also took over the overall lead. 

Williams faced a long sprint for the line against the former two-time World Champion and Oscar Onley (dsm-firmenich PostNL), but neither rider could match the speed of Williams on the finishing straight on the Yorkshire coast. Alaphilippe was the more aggressive rider on the day, launching a series of attacks on the hilly coastal roads in north-east England, although Williams proved to be the stronger of the two when it mattered. 

After several riders attempted to get away, Williams put in a stinging attack on the second ascent of the steep Saltburn Bank climb which split the lead group. Williams took Alaphilippe and Onley with him while Remco Evenepoel and Williams’ teammate, Joe Blackmore, marshalled the chase group behind. 

With three kilometres to the line, it was trademark Alaphilippe as he began tightening his shoes and shaking out his legs ahead of the final sprint. Williams, however, was not fazed by the Frenchman’s theatrics and held on to take his ninth professional victory. 

After going close in 2023, Williams said post-race that it was a relief to finally win at the Tour of Britain and "get his hands in the air."

"It feels really good, it’s really special to win in the UK," he said. "It was tough. It was raced from far out. From 70 km it was technical, twisty and full of steep climbs. The key was to just be at the front and then when the race opened up we’d be there with numbers. The way the boys rode was superb, they kept me in position and took me into every climb in perfect position. Joe [Blackmore] was unbelievable in the final as well and gave us that extra rider to play with. 

"In the end, the goal was to get me to the line in a small group and then I’d back my sprint and try and see if we could hold on. Obviously it was going to be tough with Alaphilippe, but I just gave it my all, got my head down, and tried to get to the line first."

"The tactic was just to be on the front foot," he added. "It was the kind of race where things could have gotten out of hand pretty quick. In a sprint of three, you just get your head down and try. Then whoever has got the best legs at the end will win. Luckily it was my day today, so I’m just really proud to get it done today and have the jersey to defend for the next few days."

Williams goes into stage three with six seconds on Onley in second place. Alaphilippe is in third, another ten seconds back on the Welshman. 

How it happened

Stage two was expected to be one for the overall favourites, and potentially decisive, even with another four stages left to race. The riders faced 152 kilometres, with three category one ascents to deal with, along the north Yorkshire coast between Darlington and Redcar. 

By the time the final categorised climb of the day, Lythe Bank, arrived, two groups of riders had established a lead over the Soudal Quick-Step led peloton. 

With 52 kilometres to the finish in Redcar, an eight-man group containing Trinity Racing’s Callum Thornley - an escapee on stage one - had an advantage of 44 seconds over the second group on the road which contained plenty of firepower. Joe Blackmore (Israel-Premier Tech), Ben Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) and Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) were present in the eleven rider strong move.

Once the peloton began Lythe Bank, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) launched an attack which pulled several riders away with him, including Quick-Step’s Julian Alaphilippe and Tom Pidcock of Ineos Grenadiers. The Evenepoel led attackers rapidly caught the group containing Joe Blackmore who now had his teammate Stevie Williams with him. Pidcock was then distanced from the group due to the high pace set by the Quick-Step trio of Alaphilippe, Evenepoel and Gil Gelders. 

Thornley was first over Lythe Bank which ensured he extended his lead in the mountains classification. Alaphilippe and Evenepoel did not relent and eventually got back on terms with the Thornley led lead group. Due to the infernal pace set by Quick-Step, Pidcock continued to drop away from the leaders, but the Yorkshireman still had Ben Swift present alongside him in support. The two riders were more than 30 seconds down on the leaders with 40 kilometres to go. 

Alaphlippe attempted to split the lead group on the punchy terrain, but Joe Blackmore and Williams were alert to every acceleration from the former two-time World Champion. The Israel-Premier Tech pair pushed on themselves as the race headed towards Saltburn Bank, but Alaphilippe was able to instantly respond. Including Alaphilippe, Williams and Blackmore, seven men remained up ahead as the race entered the finishing circuit. Evenpoel and Jake Stewart (Israel-Premier Tech) soon joined the head of the race to form a nine man group. 

Alaphilippe and Blackmore continued to both launch attacks, but neither rider was able to get away as Saltburn Bank approached once more. Stevie Williams put in an explosive move on Saltburn which only Oscar Onley (dsm-firmenich PostNL) could follow. Alaphlippe eventually got across to the attack. 

The three riders continued to pull away from the chasers into the final kilometres. Williams then had the edge in the three up sprint for the line and held off Alaphilippe for the stage win.

Magnier again wins in Tour of Britain after fine teamwork by Evenepoel and Alaphilippe, Williams retains leader's jersey

Paul Magnier won the fourth stage of the Tour of Britain again. The fast French rider from Soudal-Quick Step was the quickest in the bunch sprint, beating Ethan Vernon (Israel-Premier Tech) and Erland Blikra (Uno-X Mobility), who finished second and third, respectively. This was Magnier’s second stage victory in this edition of the Tour of Britain. Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) kept his leader's jersey.

After Williams secured his second stage win the previous day, the Friday stage was set up for the sprinters, given its mostly flat terrain between Derby and Newark-On-Trent. There were few elevation gains, and the last 40 kilometers were nearly pancake flat, making a bunch sprint almost inevitable.

Ben Swift starts a battle, followed by three escapees

Ben Swift (INEOS Grenadiers) perhaps had different plans, as he attacked right from the start. He built up a two-minute lead, after which a trio decided to bridge the gap to the Brit. These were Liam O'Brien (Lidl-Trek Future Racing), Scott McGill (Project Echelon Racing) and Rowan Baker (Saint Piran). They closed the gap to Swift, but strangely, they soon saw Swift say goodbye to them. He decided to wait for the peloton after all.

The trio, however, did not give up and stayed ahead for a long time. The peloton, led all day by Soudal-Quick Step and Israel-Premier Tech, kept them in check. The breakaway riders consistently had a lead of about two minutes.

Intermediate sprint causes chaos, Alaphilippe gets involved

When the peloton approached within half a minute of the breakaway at 25 kilometers from the finish, O'Brien decided to accelerate. He left McGill and Baker behind and continued solo. At that point, the race also exploded in the peloton due to the available bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint, which resulted in the breakaway being caught in no time.

Julian Alaphilippe took advantage of the chaos and launched an attack 16 kilometers from the finish. A somewhat strange move from the Frenchman, considering that he had Magnier, possibly the fastest man in the race, as a teammate. Alaphilippe was quickly reeled back in, after which a series of attacks followed. Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) tried in vain, and his teammate Ethan Hayter also took a shot. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) once again proved to be a good teammate by closing all the gaps.

After a phase of unrest, a sprint finish

After all the teams accepted that no attack was going to succeed, we saw the sprint trains forming. Alaphilippe and Evenepoel were positioned well at the front during the final phase to support their finisher, Magnier. The double Olympic champion delivered Alaphilippe and Magnier perfectly, and the two-time world champion gave his sprinter an excellent lead-out. Magnier came with a powerful sprint on the outside and won convincingly. Vernon finished second, and Blikra came third.

Julian Alaphilippe, la très vive émotion

La Quick-Step a parfaitement lancé le Tour de Grande-Bretagne, où le Wolfpack peut notamment s’appuyer sur Julian Alaphilippe et Remco Evenepoel. Les deux hommes ont d’ailleurs joué un rôle précieux, lundi, dans le succès de leur jeune coéquipier Paul Magnier. Le sprinter tricolore a en effet été parfaitement emmené par ses deux leaders dans le final, faisant ensuite jouer sa pointe de vitesse pour l’emporter. De quoi donner le sourire à toute l’équipe.

Mais Julian Alaphilippe en veut plus en Grande-Bretagne, une course qu’il affectionne tout particulièrement. « Je suis heureux d’être ici. J’aime cette course où l’on peut courir de manière offensive, avec des montées courtes, beaucoup de moments d’efforts à bloc, des routes étroites. J’ai toujours aimé cela », a-t-il ainsi confié avant le départ de la première étape.

Julian Alaphilippe veut lever les bras une dernière fois avec le Wolfpack

Passé proche de la victoire lors de la Classica San Sebastian, le double champion du monde espère d’autant plus goûter à la victoire qu’il vit ses derniers jours à la Quick-Step avant de rejoindre l’équipe Tudor cet hiver. Une perspective qui augure de très vives émotions et le pousse à voir grand pour cette fin de saison.

« Je suis super motivé pour bien finir la saison. En espérant gagner au moins une fois. Ici ce serait super, mais pour les dernières courses je veux vraiment pouvoir donner mon meilleur. Chaque course est spéciale désormais pour moi, car je sais que ce seront les dernières que je dispute avec l’équipe », a-t-il lancé.

Après le Tour de Grande-Bretagne, Julian Alaphilippe devrait mettre le cap sur le Canada pour disputer le Grand Prix du Québec et celui de Montréal. Il enchaînera ensuite avec l’Italie pour préparer le Tour de Lombardie, qui devrait constituer sa dernière course avec la Quick-Step, le 12 octobre prochain.

Tour de Grande-Bretagne | 4e étape | Bien lancé par Alaphilippe, Magnier remporte une 2e étape au sprint : l'arrivée

Deuxième jeudi, Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) a cette fois-ci remporté la 4e étape du Tour de Grande-Bretagne, vendredi. Le Français a été parfaitement lancé par son équipier Julian Alaphilippe qui l'a bien aidé. Suivez le Tour de Grande-Bretagne sur Eurosport via l'application de streaming Max. Julian Alaphilippe is aan laatste koersen bezig voor Soudal-Quick Step: "Doet toch wat raar"

Na 11 seizoenen Quick Step neemt Julian Alaphilippe na dit jaar afscheid van de ploeg van Patrick Lefevere. In de Tour of Britain blikten Alaphilippe en Evenepoel al eens kort terug op zijn tijd bij het Belgische team. "Het is een speciale periode geweest."

Voor Julian Alaphilippe  en Soudal - Quick Step  komt er een einde aan een tijdperk. Na 11 seizoenen trekt de 32-jarige Fransman de deur achter zich dicht. Vanaf volgend jaar zal hij in het truitje van Tudor koersen. Tijdens de Tour of Britain  nam Alaphilippe al even de tijd om op zijn periode bij de Wolfpack terug te blikken. "Het doet toch wat raar hier omdat het een van mijn laatste koersen voor de ploeg is. Maar net daarom ben ik heel gemotiveerd en geconcentreerd voor alle koersen die er nog aan zitten te komen." "Ik besef dat het einde van het seizoen eraan komt, maar tot de Ronde van Lombardije rijd ik nog veel koersen. Ik geniet er dan ook ten volle van."

Alaphilippe won voor de ploeg van Patrick Lefevere 42 keer. Zo staan er 6 ritten in de Tour de France op zijn naam en een rit in de Giro en de Vuelta. Hij won ook Milaan-Sanremo, de Strade Bianche en tot 3 keer toe de Waalse Pijl.  "We hebben samen mooie momenten beleefd. Ik onthoud alle goeie herinneringen. Het is een speciale periode voor me geweest."

"Maar ik ben blij met mijn beslissing om naar Tudor te trekken. Daar heb ik veel goede, vooral persoonlijke, redenen voor."

Remco Evenepoel: "Echt een legende"

Alaphilippe werd natuurlijk ook 2 keer op een rij wereldkampioen. "Dat kunnen niet veel renners zeggen", bewonderde  Remco Evenepoel  die prestatie. De olympische kampioen koerst momenteel samen met Alaphilippe in de Tour of Britain en rijdt al 6 jaar samen met de Fransman. "Hij is een van de meest iconische renners in de geschiedenis van de ploeg. Hij heeft heel veel overwinningen geboekt en mocht ook nog 15 dagen de gele trui dragen in de Tour, dus hij is echt een legende." "Iedereen heeft zijn eigen mentaliteit en karakter, maar hij is een heel gulzige meneer en een supergoede gast om mee op pad te zijn."

Tour de Grande-Bretagne, 3e étape : Evenepoel distancé, Stephen Williams s’impose à Barnsley

Sous une pluie battante, Stephen Williams a remporté ce jeudi la 3e étape du Tour de Grande-Bretagne entre Sheffield et Barnsley. Côté belge, l’information à retenir est la journée difficile de Remco Evenepoel, qui a été contraint de laisser filer le peloton à 20 kilomètres de l’arrivée et termine finalement à 2:30 de Williams.

Fringant la veille, Remco Evenepoel a connu une troisième étape difficile ce jeudi, sur le Tour de Grande-Bretagne. Présent dans le peloton jusqu’à 20 kilomètres de l’arrivée, le Belge s’est soudainement retrouvé distancé, et n’a pu raccrocher. Il a franchi la ligne en 42e position, 2 minutes et 30 secondes après Stephen Williams .

Le Français Julian Alaphilippe et le Britannique Ben Swift ont lancé les hostilités. Les deux coureurs ont été accompagnés dans l'échappée par le Britannique Jake Stewart et le Néerlandais Jelte  Krijnsen . Le quatuor a finalement été repris par le peloton à 93 km de la ligne. Un groupe de sept coureurs a reformé une échappée avec notamment Gil Gelders . Le peloton a accéléré dans le final pour réduire l'écart avec la tête de course et Evenepoel n'a pas été en mesure de suivre le rythme.  

Les hommes de tête ont finalement été repris à 5 km de l'arrivée de l'ascension de Hound Hill (2e cat. 1,4 km à 5,5%). La victoire s'est jouée au sprint et Williams s'est montré le plus rapide pour signer la 10e victoire de sa carrière, la 5e cette saison, et la deuxième consécutive dans ce Tour de Grande-Bretagne. Le Français Paul Magnier a pris la 2e place devant l'Italien Edoardo Zambanini . Très en vue, Gil Gelders termine 15e et premier Belge.

Au général, Williams compte respectivement 16 et 41 secondes d'avance sur ses compatriotes Oscar Onley et Mark Donovan . La 4e étape devrait sourire aux sprinteurs vendredi avec un parcours de 138,5 km entre Derby et Newark-on-Trent. La 20e édition du Tour de Grande-Bretagne s'achèvera dimanche à Felixstowe où l'on connaîtra le successeur de Wout van Aert , aussi vainqueur en 2021.

Julian Alaphilippe: I don't doubt that I'll get back to my best level

Frenchman returns to Canadian WorldTour races at the end of a difficult season

Form is temporary, but star quality is permanent. When the organisers of the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et Montréal held a press briefing with the race favourites on Wednesday afternoon, the biggest scrum formed around Julian Alaphilippe , just as it did on his last appearance in these parts in 2019.

On that occasion, Alaphilippe was cycling’s man of the moment, having dominated the Spring and then spent two dizzying weeks in the yellow jersey, an adventure that almost saw him win the Tour de France itself.

This time out, the Frenchman arrives in Canada at the end of a season of largely unrewarded labour, a year marked by perspiration but bereft of inspiration. Victories at the Ardèche Classic and the Critérium du Dauphiné suggested a corner might have been turned. At the Classics and the Tour, however, he ran into repeated dead ends.

“I think it was a difficult year for me, with not a lot of success,” Alaphilippe confessed. “But it’s also been an important year, a year where I could learn a lot.”

The unwanted lessons already began in April of last year when Alaphilippe sustained two broken ribs, a broken scapula, and a punctured lung in a mass crash at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The recovery was arduous, and his return to competition at the end of last season was ill starred.

Victory on the Mur de Huy at the Tour de Wallonie was followed by a bout of COVID-19. A serviceable cameo on Remco Evenepoel’s behalf at the Vuelta a España was ended by a heavy crash. Alaphilippe hoped to start again from scratch in 2023, but the vim of old never quite returned. The road back from the Liège crash has been more arduous than anticipated.

“I think after last season, I wanted to do everything I could to come back on my level this year, and that’s what I’ve done,” Alaphilippe said. “Now, for the results, I have to be patient and continue to work hard like I always did. I hope to do a good end of the season and to have some success. That’s all I can say. I’m really motivated, and I’m doing everything I can to come back on my best level.”

Alaphilippe’s travails this season have played out against a persistent soundtrack of rumours linking him with a move away from Soudal-QuickStep before the expiry of his contract at the end of next year. That speculation was helped on its way by some typically frank declarations of tough love from manager Patrick Lefevere – “He has the salary of a champion, but he also has to prove that he is still one,” he said pointedly last winter – though Alaphilippe, for his part, insisted that he has not been angling for a move.

“I didn’t think about it, but I kept hearing about it,” Alaphilippe said. “I thought it was pointless to respond [to the rumours], especially when sometimes there were discussions between Patrick and me that should have stayed between Patrick and me, and which were exaggerated on the internet. But I never paid attention to that. I have another year on my contract.

“I’ve often had the question: ‘Where are you going next year?’ And I’ve always said: ‘I’ve got another year on my contract next year.’ And now I’ve got a season to finish with a lot of motivation.”

When Alaphilippe claimed his first world title with a virtuoso display at Imola in 2020, he occupied the same elite bracket as Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogačar. In the two years since his thunderous title defence in Leuven, however, he knows that his place in the firmament of one-day racing has become somewhat obscured.

“I’ve never rested on my laurels,” Alaphilippe said. “Even when I achieved my objectives, I thought about the next one, and I’ve never paid too much attention to what was going on around me, whether it was positive or negative. I’ve always said to myself that if I gave the maximum of myself, I would get through it.”

The great lesson of the past twelve months, Alaphilippe added, has been to appreciate the importance of patience. Even though his first season in the rainbow jersey yielded Flèche Wallonne, a Tour de France stage win and a second world title, Alaphilippe found himself constantly straining to honour his status as  champion du monde . He felt compelled to try to put on a show every time he pinned on a number, and that sense of obligation didn’t really leave him the second time around.

“With the jersey, I put pressure on myself to be 100%, even when I wasn’t. I was stubborn that way, even before I had the jersey, but it became even more so afterwards,” Alaphilippe said.

“I’ve learned the value of patience now. I always wanted to be 100% at every race, but in the last months, I’ve learned that you have to take it on the chin sometimes. I still have the same desire as before, but I’m more patient. I don’t doubt that I’ll get back to my best level. That’s one of the things I’ve learned in recent months.”

Despite his travails, Alaphilippe lines up among the favourites in Québec on Friday and, even more so, in Montréal on Sunday. His partner Marion Rousse, meanwhile, will be in the commentary booth for French-Canadian station TVA. “I just hope they’ll be able to understand each other’s accents,” quipped Alaphilippe, who will also ride the Tour of Luxembourg and Il Lombardia in the final weeks of the season. There is still time to put a different slant on a trying campaign.

“Next year is a long way away. For now, I’m just thinking about Friday and Sunday,” he said. “I’ve always thought that way, I’ve always worked like that.”
