The perfect travel companion can be hard to find, but sometimes it's as easy as inviting a furry little friend to join . However, it obviously isn’t always easy to travel with a dog. There are many places they aren’t allowed, or modes of transportation they can’t take. And, if travelers choose to go on a road trip with their dog, they must also keep their pet's comfort in mind.

If all of this is taken care of, then road tripping with a fur baby can be a great time. Obviously, travelers must take their dog's individual needs and personality in mind when road tripping with them. If the driving distances are too great for an individual dog, then don’t do them. Travelers can treat this article as an itinerary or simply a guide to five great locations (including some of the best dog-friendly beaches ). Either way, travelers are sure to have a great time with this perfect dog-friendly Pacific Northwest road trip itinerary.

Perhaps not the most convenient of locations, but almost because of that reason, this park is an incredible destination to bring a dog to.

The San Juan Islands Sculpture Park connects nature with fantastical art. The island is littered with marshland and coastline that dogs will love exploring.

The city does see an influx of rabbits, but it's likely that your dog won’t interact with them at the beach. However, in the spirit of the Goonies, this is a great location to go hunting for some treasure and find a good time.

Leashes are not required for dogs visiting the beach, but it is strongly encouraged that only well-behaved dogs be allowed off-leash as there will likely be others visiting the beach with their furry friends.

Cape Disappointment State Park may have the most pessimistic name of any American State Park, but that has more to do with a story from the park’s past full of adventure and treachery, not actually being a disappointment.

The details surrounding the park's name are part of the fun of visiting here.

The best place to catch more details about the park's past is to visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Travelers can even bring their pets into the center, assuming they asked permission first, to enjoy the history lesson too.

By this point, your pup has probably worked up quite an appetite. Luckily Square 1 Burgers serves a dog menu along with a human one. Dogs can enjoy chicken patties and steamed broccoli with a side of ice water.

If your dog isn't used to traveling, you'll want to do some advance prepping. If you are taking a road trip, one top tip is to make sure your dog is comfortable riding in the car for longer periods of time.

If your doggo gets car sick, for instance, put him in a plastic crate with solid walls so he can't look out the car windows. Also, avoid feeding your dog before a long car ride if car sickness is an issue. You can also ask your vet about medication to help with motion sickness.

Before arriving at a hotel, check its policies regarding pets. Many hotels charge pet fees, but some, like the Kimpton brand, do not. Also, check the resort's policy on leaving dogs unattended in the room.

Another tip is to bring some favorite toys to keep your pup entertained if you are heading out to dinner without him. And, always make sure your dog is wearing a collar with a tag that identifies her by name and lists your contact info.

The Most Dog-Friendly Vacations in the United States

By Matt Kirouac

The 11 Most DogFriendly Vacations in the United States From Maine to Texas

For some travelers, a family vacation isn’t complete without the the family pet, making dog-friendly vacations the main priority. Whether traveling via road trip or plane, vacationing with furry family members can be fun for the whole gang, as long as precautions and preparations are taken . For some, the idea of leaving their dog home with a sitter or boarder can hinder the enjoyment of vacation, thus necessitating the need for a dog-friendly destination, complete with dog-friendly hotels (or Airbnbs ), dog-friendly restaurants , and maybe even a dog-friendly beach or two .

Not every vacation is perfect for your pooch, though. When mapping out dog-friendly vacations, there are important factors to consider, to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of your dog—and that of the rest of the family, of course. One of the main things is weather and season. Is the journey (be it by plane, train, or automobile) likely to be prone to cancellations? Will the forecast at your destination restrict your dog to indoor solitude? When planning a dog-friendly trip, that means including your pup in those plans and ensuring they’re able to partake in activities, be welcome in hotels, and be allowed to travel with you—because certain breeds may not be allowed to fly at all , many airlines limit the number of pups onboard, and some hotels either charge exorbitant pet fees, limit specific breeds or sizes, or prohibit them entirely. Fortunately, there are plenty of dog-friendly vacation spots across the U.S., offering a wide range in geography, travel style, and activities for the whole family—canines included. From a coastal national park community to a Midwestern woodland retreat, here are 11 of the most dog-friendly vacation spots in the country.

Black Hills, South Dakota

Home to quintessential American destinations like Crazy Horse Memorial and Custer State Park, the Black Hills of South Dakota have “family fun” etched all over them. Rapid City is the urban hub, home to the historic pet-friendly Hotel Alex Johnson . It’s allegedly haunted, but as one of the more ornate dog-friendly abodes in town, with a pampered pooch package that includes a dog bed and biscuits, it’s worth the spooks. There are numerous dog-friendly patios in town, including Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews and diner-style Tally’s Silver Spoon , and local attraction Reptile Gardens allows pups inside to marvel at the snakes, frogs, and botanical gardens. In the Black Hills, dogs are allowed on many hiking trails, including the trek up Black Elk Peak, the highest point in South Dakota, and those around Sylvan Lake, conveniently culminating with an overnight in a dog-friendly cabin at Sylvan Lake Lodge . While dogs aren’t allowed inside Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Blackberry Trail across the road offers great views and a descent into the fragrant pine-filled forest, while Crazy Horse Memorial allows dogs outside and on leashes.

Views of the beautiful Snowmass Village in Colorado

Snowmass, Colorado

Dogs are just as welcome to bask in Colorado mountain towns as humans, but rather than visit a comparatively busier—and more expensive—town like Aspen or Vail, the pastoral paradise of Snowmass offers upscale amenities, cozy ambience, and pet-friendly fare in a more modest setting. The Limelight Hotel offers spacious dog-friendly rooms in a part of town that’s close enough to main Snowmass Village, without being in the thick of the crowds. The hotel offers free water bowls, treats, and pet mats upon check-in, and most nearby trails are dog-friendly, including the Brush Creek Trail, a paved route that starts at the Snowmass Mall. For more elevation, dogs are allowed on certain gondolas from the Snowmass Ski Area, leading to more tranquil hikes and lakeside picnic opportunities up-mountain. In need of more treats and toys? Stock up at GuapoDog Pet Supply in the Snowmass Mall, and dine outside at Venga Venga , a dog-friendly Mexican cantina serving up everything from bacon guacamole to steak fajitas.

Saguaro cacti at sunrise with the setting moon in the distance in the Sonoran Desert Arizona

Tucson, Arizona

Rolling into Tucson with pup in tow, the best place to hunker down is Hotel McCoy , an artist-inspired retrofitted motel that greets guests with a rainbow mural proclaiming “Tucson Is Magic.” The colorful, inclusive desert oasis features an outdoor pet area towards the front of the property, and welcomes up to two dogs at no extra charge. Located on the west side of town, the accommodations also put you close to the majestic Saguaro National Park , where dogs are welcome on roadways, picnic areas, and paved trails, like the Desert Discovery Trail. Dogs can also visit the Tucson Botanical Gardens and the Pima Air & Space Museum , along with breweries, bars, and restaurants like Borderlands Brewing Co. and the patio at Boca Tacos y Tequila , a Top Chef -driven hot spot slinging mole de pollo tacos, ancho butter-rubbed octopus, and banh mi quesadillas. The MSA Annex , an outdoor mercado on the west side spotlighting POC- and women-owned businesses, offers ample dog-friendly seating and takeout spots for places like plant-based Beaut Burger , sushi-slinging Kukai , and Westbound cocktail bar for al fresco margaritas.

USA North Carolina Asheville elevated city skyline dawn.

Asheville, North Carolina

Filled with mountains, trails, and brewery patios, Asheville is like Disney World for outdoorsy dogs. The city is so accommodating that dogs are allowed just about everywhere, from the grounds around Biltmore Estate to the riverside trails at Chimney Rock State Park. Restaurants like Twisted Laurel are so dog-friendly that they offer a dedicated menu for dogs, while Woof Gang Bakery is a mecca for treats and trinkets. Famed for its breweries, Asheville beer spots that allow patio pups include Wicked Weed Brewing , Wedge Brewing Co. , and the sprawling lawn at New Belgium Brewery , while places like Urban Orchard and Burial Beer Co. also allow dogs indoors. For lodging, the Aloft hotel doesn’t just allow dogs, they feature an adoptable dog program, wherein rescued pups clad in “Adopt Me” vests greet guests in the lobby.

It’s the dog days of summer all year long in Pensacola, an underrated pup-friendly Florida city in the panhandle, home to myriad pet shops, dog-friendly restaurants, hotels, and outdoor recreation for miles. The Oar House is another fun spot offering fresh seafood and tiki cocktails on Bahia Mar Marina. Portland, Oregon

Teeming with parks, patios, breweries, and hip hotels, Portland is as much a playground for dogs as it is eccentric humans. Off-leash dog parks include Delta Park, Gabriel Park, and Brentwood Park, and dog-friendly trails can be found all over, like Tryon Creek State Natural Area , offering eight miles worth of shaded pathways a stone’s throw from downtown. Bars, breweries, and restaurants throughout the city welcome pups, including vegetarian comfort nook Bye & Bye , the pretty picnic table-filled patio at Victoria Bar , all-day Elevator Cafe , and White Owl Social Club , where dogs are welcome inside through a dedicated side entrance, or on the patio with beer pong and a fire pit. Then there’s the aptly dubbed Lucky Labrador Brewing Company , which is so dog-friendly that they host Dogtoberfest every September. Dog-friendly hotels are just as prolific, with options like the hip Ace Hotel , which doesn’t have any fees or breed restrictions, and the Dossier , with pet beds, bowls, and treats at check-in, plus pet-centric books that owners are free to borrow.

Texas Hill Country

With its wide open spaces, vast farmland, rolling hills, meandering trails, and breweries the size of the Mall of America, Texas Hill Country is a lush haven for dog-friendly vacationers. Located just outside of Austin (an exceedingly dog-welcoming city in and of itself), Hill Country is home to “Barking Springs” dog park by Barton Springs and pup-friendly patios like Beerburg Brewing. The area boasts leisurely hikes at Pedernales Falls State Park and dog-friendly canoe rentals at South Llano River State Park , plus a sea of wineries, distilleries, and breweries where dogs are welcome on enormous patios, like Chisholm Trail Winery , Treaty Oak Distilling with its folksy music stage and on-site barbecue restaurant, and Jester King Brewery , an enormous brewery and farm-fresh kitchen that’s so entrenched in nature it has hiking trails through the woods. In Fredericksburg, Dogologie Haus is an inn that puts pups first, offering dog beds, bowls, treats, indoor crates, and an outdoor kennel. Back in Austin, Lone Star Court is a Hill Country-inspired hotel that offers a “Pawsitively Pet Package,” including welcome treats, snack credits, late checkout, and retro-inspired accommodations.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Artists aren’t the only ones mystified by the splendors of Santa Fe , one of the most historic, captivating cities in the nation. Dogs are sure to be just as dazzled by its magnetic beauty, with ample outdoorsy locales to explore, restaurant patios to peruse, and lodging that’s just as comfy for humans and pups. As dog-friendly as Santa Fe, the thing to be mindful of is elevation—at about 7,000 feet, it’s also the highest capital city in the country, meaning you and your dog will need to acclimate to the altitude, especially on hikes and trails. This also means winter days can be quite cold, but the almost-endless sunshine should make up for it. Some areas to explore include the downtown Plaza, an area so pet-friendly that it’s adjacent to the ornate Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Although the inside cathedral isn’t open to dogs, the La Fonda on the Plaza hotel nearby is, offering pet treats upon check-in, along with dog-friendly restaurants La Fiesta Lounge and La Plazuela. Other accommodating restaurants include burger-slinging Shake Foundation with its sprawling patio, and Cafecito , a trail-adjacent eatery where your dog can guilt you into sharing bites of your empanada. Numerous dog-friendly hiking trails in and around the city include Atalaya Mountain in Santa Fe National Forest, the leisurely Santa Fe Rail Trail that traipses off into the serene desert, and the paved River Trail that meanders along the small Santa Fe River for miles, with parks, benches, and picnic tables along the way. In the famed Canyon Road gallery district, many outdoor galleries, like Canyon Road Contemporary Art , allow dogs.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Wildly underrated as a vacation destination, there’s much more to do and see in Oklahoma City than Twister screenings. A low-key cultural mecca, it’s got industrial-chic digs like the 21c Museum Hotel , an art museum-hotel hybrid with lofty dog-friendly rooms (pet fees have been waived for the rest of 2022), and The National , a new downtown high-rise hotel that allows two dogs per guest. Pups are welcome at restaurants throughout the city, like Picasso Cafe , an artsy and vegan-friendly restaurant that offers a “Bone Appétit” menu for dogs, including chicken risotto and ground beef stew. The quirky Pump Bar down the street has a huge pet-friendly patio, Angry Scotsman Brewing allows dogs both indoors and on its enormous skyline-viewing patio, and Aurora is a stylish brunch spot in the Plaza District where dogs are welcome on the cute back patio while you chow down on salted caramel cinnamon rolls and pulled pork hash. Beyond patios, there are plenty of places to explore in Oklahoma City, from downtown’s whimsical Scissortail Park ( which just doubled in size with the opening of a lower half ) to Lake Hefner, a massive park that features a nine-mile paved trail around the perimeter.

Sailboats anchored in tranquil harbor at sunrise.

Oconto County, Wisconsin

A few hours north of Milwaukee lies a swath of foliage-filled forests, rolling hills, ranches, cozy log cabins, and pristine ponds strewn with swans. The quiet enclave of Oconto County, anchored by towns like Mountain and Lakewood, is the ultimate Midwestern retreat—for humans and dogs alike. For all-natural serenity and quaint Americana charm, the region offers comfy confines all year long, with nearly 1,000 miles worth of trails for hikers, horses, ATVs, and yes, dogs. Nicolet National Forest contains many of said miles, including the flat, shaded Nicolet State Trail between Mountain and Lakewood, and the 4-mile loop around Black Lake. The community of Mountain is a particularly bucolic place to cozy up, especially when staying in a dog-friendly cabin at Spur of the Moment Ranch . The homey, family-run ranch offers horse carriage rides, campfires, and ATV and snowmobile trail access, along with plenty of space where dogs can frolic off-leash. For a home-away-from-home vibe, stock up on pet treats and things to cook—including the all-important cheese curds—from Mike’s Supermarket in Townsend, or dine at dog-friendly Mulligans Sports Bar & Grill , with a huge patio, live music, and a true-blue Wisconsin fish fry on Fridays.

Bass Harbor Head Light lighthouse at dusk Maine USA

Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine

National parks are among the most spectacular destinations to vacation with pups. Compared to big cities, they’re typically less crowded and expensive, ensuring a more stress-free experience for dogs in unfamiliar environments (and less fees for you), with plenty of room to prance around. Many national parks, however, restrict dogs to a few specific trails, if any, or certain areas only during quieter times of year. But Acadia National Park is one of the most dog-friendly parks in the country, with 100 miles of hiking trails open to dogs, as long as they’re leashed at all times. The flat Jordan Pond Path, a 3-mile loop around a shimmering lake, is a particular standout, as is the out-and-back Ocean Path Trail that begins at Sand Beach, where dogs are allowed during the off-season (mid-September to June). There’s also a Bark Ranger program that teaches owners about the Rules of B.A.R.K. (Bag your pet’s waste, Always leash your pet, Respect wildlife, Know where to go) and rewards dogs with special Bark Ranger collar tags. In the gateway town of Bar Harbor, you’ll find dog-friendly eateries, like Beal’s Lobster Pier , Peekytoe Provisions , and Side Street Cafe for all your lobster roll and haddock Reuben needs, while pet-friendly lodging runs the gamut from the casual, like Belle Isle Motel with its six acres of field space for your pup to explore, to the luxe, like Balance Rock Inn , where they’re welcome around the outdoor common grounds.

20 Top Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations for You and Your Best Travel Buddy

Calling everyone who can't bear the thought of not being with your dog for more than 24 hours... here's the perfect guide to exploring the world with your furry companion.

  • Choosing a Destination
  • International

It was mid-2008 when Amy Burkert and her husband Rod found themselves adopting a stray German shepherd . The puppy was found near their home in Philadelphia, and after a few weeks of looking for his family to no avail, they decided to adopt him as their own and name him Buster. The issue? The couple, who at the time had a small dog named Ty, was planning a huge trip up to Canada about a month later and hadn't accounted for two dogs coming along.

Burkert searched online for dog-friendly hotels and dog parks along their route but didn't come up with much. The trip went well, but the experience taught her that other people probably were also looking for the same information.

In 2009, she launched GoPetFriendly.com , a comprehensive pet travel platform that quickly took off. Soon after, she and Rod, both who work remotely for their CPA firm, sold their place in Philly, hit the road in an RV, and haven't looked back since.

"In a few months, we will have been on the road for 11 years," Burkert says, adding that Ty and Buster have sadly passed, and they now have a new pup named Myles. "We love it, and by doing that with our dogs, we are walking the talk."

Since we're all attached to our dogs at the hip, here are some of Burkert's recommendations for how you can bring them along for a vacation.

How to Choose a Dog-Friendly Vacation Destination

Consider your itinerary.

There are many things to consider when traveling with your dog , from where you'll go to how you'll get there to fun activities to do along the way. While in the decision-making phase, Burkert recommends thinking about what you and your dog like to do together first.

"Do you like to go to the beach?" she asks. "What about hiking? Exploring cities? Or sitting at a coffee shop watching people walk by? It's important to think about how much your dog physically can and would want to do and what you'd want to do together."

And be prepared to make a few sacrifices for your four-legged companion. Dog-friendly vacation spots can come in various forms. Taking a road trip with your dog to New York City, for example, may not seem like a good spot because of the population density, but there are actually tons of great green spaces for your dog to play.

"That said, you might consider sacrificing your trip to the Guggenheim if you're with your dog," she says.

Think About Where You'll Stay

Your choice of accommodations is another important thing to keep in mind when planning your trip. While some locations have hotels that allow pets , other destinations with more natural surroundings might require flexible arrangements like renting a unique Airbnb or camping.

"A lot of people think that camping is a wonderful thing to do with a dog on vacation, but not if you're planning on leaving him or her in the camper all day," Burkert says. "That isn't much of a vacation for your pet. Instead, try to find a place that will work for you both."

As you decide the best vacation destination for your family (fur babies included), these Burkert-recommended places both domestic and international might just do the trick.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the East Coast

Eastern vermont.

Among the places on the East Coast to take your dog on vacation, a place called Dog Mountain in the Eastern Vermont town of St. Johnsbury ranks highly for Burkert.

"The people managing it have turned what was a dairy farm into an off-leash dog heaven," she says. "There is a pond, trails, even a dog chapel."

Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania

The town of Jim Thorpe , Pennsylvania, is home to the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway , which offers breathtaking trips through the Pocono Mountains. According to Burkert , the trip is a must for dog owners and is among the best dog-friendly vacation spots in the eastern U.S.

Bar Harbor, Maine

The 5,500-person town of Bar Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island is a great place to bring your pet companion, especially if you're interested in hiking at Acadia National Park . This island is the best of both worlds with mountains and sandy beaches within the park, and pet-friendly patios for eating in town. Doggie visitors are encouraged and there are tons of trails both you and your pup will enjoy.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the West Coast

Bend, oregon.

The 100,000-person town in central Oregon is so obsessed with dogs that they are allowed almost everywhere. Dog-friendly hiking trails are abundant at the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range, and within the city limits, you'll find many outdoor food carts , food truck parks, and breweries (including the award-winning Deschutes Brewery ), all of which welcome dogs.

San Diego, California

Sunny San Diego is among one of the best dog-friendly vacation spots thanks to its many open areas that accommodate them. If your pup likes to play on the beach, there are plenty of dog beaches and off-leash dog parks in and around this SoCal city. Check out Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, or Morley Field Dog Park in San Diego's famed Balboa Park .

If you're a lover of the sea, take advantage of SD's coastal location and rent a boat or a yacht to let your dog feel the wind in her hair. If you're looking for an activity that will satisfy your pup's competitive nature, catch a Padres baseball game at Petco Park where they have a special viewing area called The Barkyard just for people and their pets.

Northern Arizona

Many people are surprised to learn that Grand Canyon National Park , located in Northern Arizona, is a vacation spot that allows dogs. As Burkert explains , the South Rim is your best bet if you're bringing your furry friend.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Midwest

Chicago, illinois.

"I love going to Chicago with dogs ," says Burkert. She suggests checking out the trails along Lake Michigan and exploring Navy Pier, as just a few examples of things to do.

When you get hungry, grab a slice on the patio with your pup at Paradise Park or a pint at Empirical Brewery , which is also home to a colony of beloved brewery cats .

Grand Haven, Michigan

Grand Haven is a picturesque town on Michigan's West Coast loved by tourists and their dog companions alike, mainly for the number of greenspaces and beaches. Grand Haven City Beach is a great place to go with your pup on a warm summer day. The vacation town even boasts the Must Love Dogs Boutique & Spa , a pet-friendly shopping spot where you can bring your pup to sniff around the store.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis is filled with great places to take your dog on vacation, including breweries, outdoor restaurants, and open spaces like White River State Park . The city's growing number of outdoor dining spots that allow dogs makes Indy a no-brainer for foodies bringing along their fur babies.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Southern U.S.

Asheville, north carolina.

The sprawling Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., allows dogs on its grounds and outdoor patios (but not inside buildings). Still, at more than 8,000 acres to explore, it's absolutely worth bringing along the pooch, especially on a beautiful day. Once you've gotten your steps in stomping around the mansion gardens, the nearby town of Asheville has a ton of pet-friendly activities for the two of you to take on, as well. Check out the street art in downtown Asheville, or sniff out some local goodies at one of the town's many bustling outdoor farmer's markets. After you've gotten your fix of city life, head out to explore the miles of trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains and book a camping spot for your and your furry friend to soak in the sounds of nature.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is one of the most dog-friendly U.S. cities on our list, featuring many pets-allowed restaurants like Brown Dog Deli and Poogan's Porch , named after the friendly neighborhood dog who greeted guests until he passed in 1979.

If your dog wants to live like a princess for a day, Charleston Carriage Works offers historical tours of the city and allows dogs to come along for the ride in style. When you're ready to stretch your legs, check out Charleston's beaches at Sullivan's Island and Morris Island . If the weather isn't favorable, take your dog for a dip in the indoor dog pool at Wag-n-Splash .

Sarasota, Florida

Brohard Beach and Paw Park is among the top places to go in Sarasota if you have a pup in tow. The beach is especially accommodating for pet parents with its dog showers and fire hydrants for puppy bathroom breaks, according to Burkert.

International Dog-Friendly Vacation Ideas

Before you head out on an international adventure with your favorite travel buddy, keep in mind that there can be potential health risks when taking your dog on long flights . It may make more sense to explore the spots where you can safely bring your dog along in the car on a road trip, or even via train travel , before booking a trip to one of these pet-friendly international cities. As always, it's best to talk with your veterinarian about whether it's safe for your dog to accompany you on long flights or to visit other countries. Your vet will help you understand the risks and what you need to know before your pup gets a new passport stamp.

Venice, Italy

While may not be many sprawling greenspaces in Venice, dogs are still welcome in the charming Italian city limits. Pups are allowed in many water boats and are able to stroll the street with you. Just be aware that sometimes the small alleyways can be crushingly busy, so it's best to go in the off-season in November–March so your pup's not overwhelmed with the crowds.

Tokyo, Japan

Japan celebrates six native dog breeds , called the Nihon Ken, which have been designated as national monuments. So as you can imagine, the country is incredibly dog-friendly . Dogs are allowed in hotels, stores, and some restaurants, and there are tons of dog parks for them to run in cities like Tokyo. Some of the best of the capital city include Yoyogi Park Dog Run , Honmoku Sancho Park , and Ueno Park .

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Recognized as one of North America's most dog-friendly cities, Vancouver is well-known as a great destination for dogs and their human counterparts looking for an adventure. While here, make a stop at any (or all!) of the great beaches or off-leash parks throughout the city, and don't miss a day playing at the world-renowned Stanley Park and Arboretum.

When you get hungry, take an afternoon stroll through the Mainstreet Station Farmer's Market on Wednesdays in the summer months. Or explore all that Granville Island public market has to offer, from food to art to some pretty cool historical architecture, any day of the week. Outside of the city limits, Vancouver also has a lot to offer nature lovers, including some of the best hiking you'll ever do in every season.

First, make sure  sure pup is up to date on her vaccinations and physically able to take a road trip. Also, ensure fren’s flea and tick treatments are up to snuff! If your pup is an anxious shot-gun rider, ask your vet about meds or other solutions to make him more comfortable.

Always come prepared

Not sure what to pack for the pup? Here is a list of essentials to consider adding to the luggage.

  • Identification papers and vaccination records
  • Collapsible dog bowls
  • Plenty of food and treats
  • Leash with collar or harness
  • So many poop bags
  • A towel or two (for muddy paws)
  • A first aid kit
  • Any medications that Fido might be taking

Buckle Up, Pups! It’s Road Trip Time

From Minnesota to Ohio, and back around the Dakotas, the Midwest is a region like no other! If you’re ready to see what you’ve been missing, or revisit some amazing sites, then check out these dog-friendly vacation destinations.

More than simply fun to say, Bemidji has a lot to offer to road-tripping pups and humans. We recommend checking out Lake Bemidji State Park for its over-water sunsets and pup-friendly hiking trails.

After that, head over to the patio of Bemidji Brewing for some delicious beer and food, plus complimentary treats and water for your pup.

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: Candlewood Suites Bemidji . This spot allows two pups up to 80lbs for $25 the first night, followed by $15 for each subsequent night.

Duluth is your quintessential MN vacation spot, and it’s one of the dog-friendliest as well. Duluth is home to a number of fantastic dog-friendly restaurants and breweries: We love the patios of At Sara’s Table Chester Creek Café or Ursa Minor Brewery in paw-ticular.

As for outdoor activities, check out Ely’s Peak for a leisure hike with some amazing views. If you are feeling adventurous, Duluth offers a unique experience for you and your pooch; Lake Country Air & Beaver Air Tours is an air tour company that showcases water plane rides up the North Shore! Adults can fly for just $119 per person, and doggos fly free!

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: Sheraton Duluth Hotel . Allows dogs up to 80 lbs, and a guest waiver must be signed at check-in.

4. Wisconsin Dells

The Dells is a Midwest must-see for both you and you pup. Start off your vacation with a river ride from Dells Boat Tours , and if you and Fido are still on the prowl, head out to Devil’s Lake State Park for some terrier-iffic views.

Hungry after all of that fresh air? The Keg & the Patio and the Brat House Grill both have dog-friendly patios, and the latter has a special menu just for pups. If you’re in the mood for a brew, hit up the dog-friendly beer garden at Port Huron Brewing Company .

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: While there is no shortage of pet-friendly lodging options in the Dells, our recommendation is Baker’s Sunset Bay Resort , where you can bring up to two pets for $15 a day per floof.

5. Door County

A famous, stunning slice of land surrounded by Lake Michigan, Door County is home to a fabulous hiking opportunity in Whitefish Dunes State Park , which even has access to a dog-friendly beach area on Lake Michigan.

After you get in some walking, swimming, and socializing, consider a stop by the Gibraltar Grill for delicious food and fantastic music. Maybe pup’ll even get a feature on the Dog Pals page of their website!

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: Hillside Inn of Ephraim . Allows pups with approval, so be sure to call ahead. Other great lodging options can be found here .

6. Mackinac Island

Hit the water with a trip to Mackinac Island in the UP of Michigan. Soak up the sun with a ferry ride from Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry (Fido rides for free). We know your history hound has been beggin’ to see a recreation of an 18th-century fort and fur trading village, and he’ll get his fill at Colonial Michilimackinac .

Looking for something to cure your sweet tooth on this vacation? Head to the famous Ryba’s Fudge Shop and experience some delicious T-R-E-A-Ts for pups and humans. It’s the best of both worlds.

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: Stay right on the island at the Mission Point Resort , or the Holiday Inn Express Mackinaw City is just a short ride to the mainland of Michigan (one-time $30 pet fee).

7. Cleveland

Ready to have a ball? Cleveland is home to tons of dog-friendly excitement including the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath which has access to some of the most beautiful views of the canals and wildlife. If pup is more of a city slicker, get tickets to Cleveland Scavenger Hunt: A Ball Round The Mall where you and Fido can search the city for landmarks, artwork, and more!

Bring your woofer to the dog-friendly patios at Nano Brew Cleveland and Luxe Kitchen , which are both top rated in the city for both food and dog-friendliness

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: Hotel Indigo Cleveland Downtown is a great place to unwind, and they’re dog-friendly! Their pet-policy allows for 2 dogs up to 50lbs for a $35 deposit and $35 nightly fee per dog.

8. Indianapolis

Let’s set our road trip GPS to Indy! First stop is Broad Ripple Park which is home to a beautiful view of the White River and lots of doggos. From there, check out the Cultural Trail , which connects Indy’s six Cultural Districts. You’ll find pup tons of dog-friendly breweries, coffee shops, and stores along the way (Mass. Ave is a mutts visit!).

You’re sure to be hongryafter your day of play, so zoomie over to Cafe Patachou for some top-rated breakfast and lunch! After your meal, hit up Hotel Tango Distillery for a few cocktails with your pal.

Our dog friendly lodging pick: Ironworks Hotel Indy LOVES dogs, and if you call them in advance, they’ll even prep your room with dog bowls, a custom Ironworks mat, and a treat!

There’s no dog-friendly vacation station like the Windy City for your road trip! If your pup has been cooped up on your long ride, head over to Puptown Dog Park in Margate Park! Chicago has some of the best gardens and outdoor shopping in the Midwest; take Fido to Farmers Market Garden Center for some retail therapy.

Pizza is a Chicago staple, and 6 Mutts Chicago food truck is slingin’ pizza options for you AND your pup. What goes great with pizza? Beer. Lake Bluff Brewing welcomes both you and your pooch on the patio for views and brews!

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: the Staypineapple Hotel is an iconic spot in The Loop of Chicago! Not only are they pet-friendly, but according to their website they are, “Pet Obsessed!”

10. Des Moines

Treat your pup to a road trip to Des Moines. We recommend checking out the dog-friendly and scenic Kruidenier Trail , a relatively short hike which passes beautiful Grey’s Lake and connects to other local trails.

After that, consider a stop at the dog-friendly patio of Gazali’s , a Mediterranean spot which churns out gyros, wraps, salads, and sandwiches.

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: La Quinta Inn & Suites Des Moines West Clive . Like almost all La Quinta locations, this spot allows pups—with some restrictions. Find deets here .

11. St. Louis

Another great pet-friendly road trip destination is St. Louis! Get outdoors and go to the Ellen Clark Sculpture Park & Dog Park for a peek at the St. Louis University campus. You should also add the iconic Gateway Arch National Park for some fun and very cute photo-ops!

Head to Boathouse at Forest Park to enjoy an American style dinner on their pooch-loving patio. If you’re looking for more variation in your menu, try Tamm Avenue Grill for the largest dog-friendly patio around.

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: Magnolia Hotel St. Louis offers a unique lodging experience, and is also proudly pet-friendly.

12. Kansas City

Put Kansas City on your Midwest road trip vacation checklist. You and your pooch can catch a flick at the Boulevard Drive-In Theater or take a stroll at the Shawnee Mission Off-Leash Dog Park .

You can’t leave Kansas without tasting some KC BBQ. Woodyard Bar-B-Que has tons of amazing KC-style options, and the dog-friendly patio is perfect for you and pup to enjoy a meal together.

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: The Residence Inn Kansas City at the Legends is a comfortable stay that allows 2 pets (50 lb max) per room for a $150 fee.

If you’re looking for some history on your dog-friendly road trip, Omaha is a great place to stop. Memorial Park showcases trails and monuments that honor the fallen soldiers from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Then head to Omaha Dog Bar where your dog will get a chance to socialize with tons of other pooches while enjoying the “bar” of dog treats.

J. Coco is a great place to settle down from your busy day to a nice lunch or dinner on their patio with your bud. They serve up great organic fare and will tell your pup how pretty she is (even tho she already knows).

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: The Element Omaha Midtown Crossing is an affordable hotel with great amenities, including being very pet-friendly.

South Dakota

14. Rapid City

Rapid City is one of the Midwest’s great, often-overlooked gems. While you’re in town, make a stop at the in-progress, ten-times-larger-than-Mount Rushmore Crazy Horse Memorial , which will be among the world’s tallest monuments once completed. You’ll enjoy the short walk, the breathtaking view, and the look at the Midwest’s Native American heritage.

Consider a stop at the sprawling, gorgeous patio of Murphy’s Pub and Grill for some drool-inducing eats like street-style tacos, unique sliders, chicken wings with wacky flavors like strawberry-habanero, and much more.

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: Grand Gateway Hotel . Up to two dogs allowed per room for a nightly fee of $10 per dog.

North Dakota

When traveling to North Dakota, Fargo is a must-see destination. Your pup will love joining you at the Fargo Air Museum where you can both see some airplanes and fascinating memorabilia. When your hound is ready to roll, get some fresh air at the Village West Dog Park .

Fargo has many dog-friendly breweries and restaurants, and one that should be on your radar is Wild Terra Cider . From sweet spiked ciders to street tacos and nachos, this bar is one that you and your furry friend will definitely enjoy.

Our dog-friendly lodging pick: Red Roof Inn offers a homey atmosphere while also being super welcoming to four-legged frens.

Woof to the Wise

Not every road trip is going to be ideal for your furry friend—nor your furry friend for every road trip. Remember to consider your dog’s individual personality and needs when deciding whether or not they should tag along. And, as always, never ever leave your dog unattended in a vehicle—especially during the scorching summer months.

There you have it, friends. You now have a summer’s worth of pup-lovin’ road trip inspiration to keep you and your best bad busy.

Once you’ve visited the gardens make sure to have one of the huge pieces of cake from the cafe, and if it’s a sunny day, you can walk to Abbey River beach, which takes around 45minutes from the Abbey.

Clovelly is one of North Devon’s most iconic locations, having been used in multiple films and TV shows.

A privately-owned harbour village near Hartland, the village charges a small entrance fee to enter as a visitor but dogs enter for free.

The majority of the buildings are listed, and the highlight is the steep pedestrianised cobbled main street flanked by the quaint, traditional houses and a breathtaking view over the ocean and surrounding countryside.

The Milky Way Adventure Park

Perfect for both children and adults, The Milky Way Adventure Park is North Devon’s most thrilling attraction.

With a great offering of activities including rollercoasters, rides, live shows and crafting sessions, The Milky Way Adventure Park welcome well behaved, friendly dogs on leads.

Dogs are not allowed in the bird of prey centre, play areas, live shows or on the rides.

Broomhill Sculpture Gardens

Take an immersive walk in the South-West’s most enchanting gardens featuring over 200 sculptures across 15-acres on the Broomhill estate .

As well as the sculpture garden, the Broomhill hotel also includes a contemporary art gallery filled with affordable art, and an award-winning restaurant serving mouth-watering slow food.

Dogs are welcome throughout the hotel, art gallery, and sculpture gardens.

Okehampton Castle

Dog-friendly Okehampton Castle was built after the Norman Conquest and was once the largest castle in Devon, but is sadly just ruins now so is best visited on a sunny day.

The castle is part of English Heritage so they offer a fascinating audio tour which brings the castle back to life, and as well as the audio tour and ruins, there’s also a lovely riverside picnic area and beautiful woodland walks nearby ideal for stretching little legs or just being surrounded by nature.

Ilfracombe Princess Boat Trip

Ilfracombe Coastal Cruises have been running coastal cruises for over 20 years, so you’ll be hard pushed to find a better way to discover the North Devon Coast .

The dog-friendly Ilfracombe Princess is a fully licenced 100 seater passenger boat offering unspoilt panoramic views from the top deck.

A spacious bottom deck with ample seating inside and outside. Choose between the Smugglers Caves cruise, Exmoor Cliffs and Waterfall cruise, or Seals and Lighthouse cruise. Book at the Pier Kiosk near Verity or online .

Tapeley Park and Gardens

Close to lovely Instow, Tapeley Park and Gardens is dog-friendly and entry is free to RHS members.

The Tapeley Park grounds are renowned for their beautiful gardens, particularly the Italian terraces, and include a lake, ponds, old woodland and a number of fields where Hector’s herd of Highland cattle graze.

As well as a sizeable organic vegetable garden, Tapeley Park has one of the oldest permaculture gardens in the UK.

Enjoy light bites and refreshments in the tearooms, with vegetables and salad items grown in their own garden.

Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway

The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway opened in 1890 and is the highest and the steepest totally water powered railway in the world.

The grade II listed funicular railway is a finalist in Devon’s Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2021, and connects the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth providing stunning coastal views that will be the highlight of any visit.

Exmoor National Park

Exmoor is one of Britain’s most well-regarded moors and the setting for a number of books set in Devon , with a plethora of stunning walks for you and your dog.

A beautiful landscape of moorland, woodland, coast and rivers shaped by people and nature, a trip to North Devon is not complete without visiting Exmoor National Park.

Although one of the UK’s smallest National Parks, what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in beauty and variety.

Spend a day exploring the area, or just visit for an hour or two to stretch your legs enroute to one of the other attractions on this list.

Quince Honey Farm

Located close to Barnstaple, dog-friendly Quince Honey Farm is a working honey farm with over 60,000 bees and with beautifully landscaped Nectar gardens that are planted with millions of bee friendly plants.

The farm offers tours, a shop for honey products and a restaurant, plus children’s activities including a soft play area.

Set in over 40 acres and run by the same family since 1949, Quince Honey Farm is now in its third generation with over 1500 hives.

Gnome Reserve and Wildflower Garden

More suited for families with young children (and any older gnome enthusiasts), the Gnome Reserve and Wildflower Garden is a small and unique place.

Known as a ‘pastoral refuge for garden gnomes’, the reserve was established in 1979 by Ann Atkin, a former art student, and is home to over 2,000 gnomes.

Each visitor is loaned their very own gnome hat to wear while exploring the gnome gardens, and the area also includes woodlands, a stream, pond, meadow and wildflower garden.

Arlington Court Carriage Museum and Gardens

Part of the National Trust, Arlington Court Carriage Museum and Gardens allows dogs on leads in the grounds, formal gardens, and carriage museum when it’s open.

The Chichesters, who owned Arlington Court for eleven generations, were a family of dog lovers, proven by a memorial at the back of the house.

Arlington Court is an intriguing Regency house and includes an impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles, all set in a picturesque garden.

35 things to do in Cornwall with dogs (2024 guide)

Are you looking for the best things to do in Cornwall with dogs? I’ve created a full guide to help you plan your trip!

Heading to Cornwall this year, but want to bring your four-legged friend?

Whether you have a Yorkshire terrier or labrador, I have good news: Cornwall is one of the most dog-friendly places in the UK.

As most of Cornwall is rural, the best activities focus on the great outdoors which are naturally dog-friendly. Because of this, a dog-loving culture has built up over time, and many outdoor and indoor attractions, restaurants and hotels have also welcomed pooches!

While you’ll need to plan a little bit more and won’t be able to do every single attraction with your dog by your side, there’s absolutely no reason that your fur baby can’t join you on your trip to the UK’s southwest!

I know Cornwall like the back of my hand – my family comes from the area and I live just over the border in Devon, so I visit at least once a month. So I know exactly what the best things to do in Cornwall with a dog are – which I’m going to cover, in full detail, in this post!

Table of Contents

Best things to do in Cornwall with dogs: top attractions

ST IVES, CORNWALL, UK - MAY 13 : View of St Ives, Cornwall on May 13, 2021. Unidentified people

The best things to do in Cornwall with dogs include:

  • Lost Gardens of Heligan
  • Eden Project
  • Pendennis Castle
  • Minack Theatre
  • Bodmin Keep
  • Jamaica Inn
  • Cornish Seal Sanctuary
  • and many more!

Here are my favourite activities in Cornwall with dogs, including any restrictions that you may have when visiting with a canine friend.

1. The Eden Project

Eden Project Cornwall uk

A world-famous attraction featuring two giant biomes, one that houses tropical plants in an indoor rainforest and one which boasts Mediterranean plants, the Eden Project is a must-visit if you’re close to St Austell .

The biomes are unfortunately not dog-friendly, so I’d only recommend visiting with a pooch if you’re in a group, so you can split up and half explore the outside gardens and half look at the indoor biomes.

Dogs on a lead are welcome in the outdoor gardens , and there are water bowls available throughout the site in case they get thirsty!

2. Minack Theatre

The minack theatre, overlooking the bright blue water at Porthcurno Beach

One of Cornwall’s most epic attractions, the Minack is a large outdoor theatre, sitting on the cliffs above Porthcurno beach, offering stunning views of the sea.

It was created by Rowena Cade in the 1930s; she more or less dug the entire theatre out by hand! Nowadays, it stands as a mesmerising, unique attraction which is open for tours throughout the summer months.

Dogs are welcome to join you in the theatre, but they must be kept on a lead.

The Minack Theatre also hosts plays throughout the summer season , but unfortunately, dogs aren’t permitted at these! (Except guide dogs).

3. Cornish Seal Sanctuary

Gweek Seal Sanctuary, Cornwall

If you’re interested in marine life, head down to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary !

This rescue centre is home to a variety of seals and other marine animals that have been found in the waters around Cornwall and elsewhere in England, and travel to the sanctuary for treatment and rehabilitation.

They release any seals that become well enough to live in the outside world; if they don’t, they are offered a permanent home at the sanctuary.

It’s a registered charity, and by visiting and paying an entry fee, you’re helping to fund their work.

Friendly dogs on leads are welcome!

4. Launceston Castle

Launceston castle in the town of Launceston, Cornwall, England. It was probably built by Robert the Count of Mortain after 1068. Launceston Castle formed the administrative centre of the new earldom of Cornwall. It was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century. UK.

Located in the East Cornwall town of Launceston, Launceston Castle originates back to the late 11th century and features a circular Norman keep and a 13th-century round tower.

The castle played a significant role in the English Civil War – it was a base for Cornish royalist defence – and was later used as a prison, where it imprisoned George Fox who founded the Quakers.

Dogs are welcome at Launceston Castle but must be kept on a lead. The surrounding town is extremely historic (it used to be the county town of Cornwall) and is worth strolling around after – check out the best things to see here .

Due to Launceston’s position close to the A30 , it’s an ideal place to stop when driving to or from Cornwall .

5. Pendennis Castle

Close up of Pendennis Castle with blue sky in background

One of my favourite castles in Cornwall , Pendennis was constructed by Henry VIII near Falmouth (although it pre-dates the coastal town) to fortify the Fal Estuary against prospective foreign invasion.

There’s a lot to see at Pendennis Castle – I wrote a full blog post about it here – as it was used during both World Wars and has a history spanning back to the Civil War.

It’s a fully dog-friendly site, they’re allowed everywhere outdoors (on a lead) and in most places indoors. There is also dog-friendly seating in the cafe.

Don’t forget to check out Falmouth’s other top attractions while you’re here too!

6. St. Mawes Castle

St Mawes Castle

Once you’ve explored Falmouth, hop on the St. Mawes Ferry (dogs travel for free!) to its sister village, St. Mawes .

With epic views over the estuary, St. Mawes Castle was built for the same purpose as Pendennis: to defend Cornwall.

It’s a lot smaller than its counterpart in Falmouth, but there are some interesting stone carvings with Latin inscriptions inside, and the view from the gardens is phenomenal.

Dogs on leads are welcome!

7. Tintagel Castle

Tintagel Beach

Legendary home of King Arthur, Tintagel Castle broods on the cliffs of the North Cornwall coastline.

The ancient castle was once the seat of Cornish kings ; and while its connections to King Arthur have been disputed, there’s no denying that the historic attraction – plus its surreal setting – is one of the best things to do in Cornwall .

Dogs are welcome , but there are lots of steps, steep cliffs and nesting birds, so they must be kept on a lead.

When you’ve finished at the castle, check out the pretty village of Tintagel too!

8. Heartlands

Delve into what makes Cornwall unique at Heartlands, a free attraction close to Camborne .

Featuring the Cornwall Mining Museum , where you can learn about the industry that Cornwall developed around in the 16th – 19th centuries, the Cornish diaspora gardens where you can learn about Cornish migration after the mines closed and even a Cornish language bookshop, there’s plenty to uncover here.

Dogs are permitted in most areas at Heartlands – but do double-check signage for particular attractions before entering.

9. Bodmin Keep

A piece of the Berlin Wall in Bodmin Keep, Cornwall, South West England

Bodmin Keep is a dog-friendly military museum in Bodmin .

Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the site – there are even three office dogs who may be around to keep them company!

The museum focuses on Cornwall’s military history , with fascinating artefacts and exhibitions, including military uniform, weapons and even a small piece of the Berlin Wall .

While Bodmin Keep is dog-friendly , please be aware that Bodmin Jail is not – the sensory exhibitions would probably be a bit too overwhelming for your pooch!

10. Jamaica Inn

Jamaica Inn Sign, with clouds in the background and the fence of the inn in the foreground

A creaky historic inn sitting in the midst of the foreboding Bodmin Moor… Jamaica Inn has notorious smuggling connections but was made famous by Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name.

It also features a museum dedicated to smuggling.

Dogs are welcome in the pub and museum, and there are even some dog-friendly hotel rooms.

11. Geevor Tin Mine

The former tin mine of Geevor on the coast of Pendeen Cornwall England UK Europe

If you want to learn more about mining history in Cornwall – and how significant it was to Cornish culture and economy throughout the centuries.

Geevor Tin Mine is a vast museum all about mining in Cornwall and also boasts an underground mine and sweeping sea views.

Dogs on leads are permitted everywhere apart from the underground mine.

12. Chysauster Ancient Village

This Iron Age village features the remains of several stone houses and is surrounded by stunning countryside.

It’s one of the smaller English Heritage attractions in Cornwall , but it’s a fascinating window into Cornwall’s pre-historic past.

Dogs are welcome on leads.

13. Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm

Healey's Cornish Cyder Farm

Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm celebrates one of Cornwall’s favourite tipples – Rattler’s Cyder!

Here, you can learn all about the cider-making process, with its history, tastings and of course, a cafe where you can purchase pints of Rattlers (you can even pour your own!).

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome everywhere apart from the production halls or jam kitchen.  There are also some friendly farm animals here, so be mindful while you’re exploring with your pooch!

14. Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park

A stately home at Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall

If you’re looking for dog-friendly attractions on a sunny day, head to Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park .

Dogs are very welcome in the estate, although it states that they must be “controlled” – they can be let off a lead if they’re well-behaved and you’re sure that they’ll come back.

In the landscaped gardens, they must be kept on a lead.

The house is a country home dating to around 1550 ; it was created by Richard Edgcumbe who owned the land and deer park. The house is open for visitors, but unfortunately, dogs aren’t permitted.

15. Lappa Valley

This family-friendly attraction comprises a few miniature railways and attractions like a boating lake,  woodland walks and a crazy golf course.

The attraction welcomes dogs on leads (even on the Lappa Valley Steam Railway carriages !), and there’s a large field close to the attraction where they can be let off their lead.

There is a small charge of £1 per dog.

16. St Nectan’s Glen

St Nectans Kieve waterfall in St Nectan's Glen valley in North Cornwall

The mystical St Nectan’s Glen is home to St Nectan’s Kieve, of the most beautiful waterfalls in Cornwall .

A plume of water descending through trees, this site has been renowned as one of the most magical places in Cornwall time and time again!

Dogs are welcome on-site , provided they’re kept on a lead and are well-behaved – it’s a peaceful place, spiritual for some, so it’s recommended to only take your dog if you know that they won’t cause a disruption with lots of barking!

17. Land’s End

Land's End area (England), UK - August 16, 2015: Dish dog in The Land's End area, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.

One of Cornwall’s most iconic landmarks, Land’s End is an epic place to visit with your dog!

Dogs are welcome on leads , and there are plenty of nearby coastal walks to explore.

At the attraction itself, enjoy stunning views of the coast, visit the gift shop and café or take a selfie (try to get the dog in!) at the famous Land’s End signpost .

18. Charlestown Shipwreck Treasure Museum

Uncover the history of shipwrecks and treasures that they contain by visiting the Charlestown Shipwreck Treasure Museum .

Dogs are welcome on leads , and there are water bowls for them at regular intervals.

Once you’ve finished, take a walk around Charlestown Harbour , which is home to plenty of dog-friendly outdoor restaurants and things to see!

Charlestown harbour

18. National Lobster Hatchery

Situated in Padstow, the National Lobster Hatchery is one of the best dog-friendly indoor attractions in Cornwall!

The National Lobster Hatchery is a small museum where you can learn about the life cycle of lobsters and see them up close, with plenty of informative displays and exhibits.

It’s only a small attraction, but dogs are welcome on leads. Once you’ve finished, check out the rest of Padstow’s attractions !

19. Wheal Martyn

Spreading over 26 acres of ground, Wheal Martyn is a China clay mining museum and exhibit.

Dogs are welcome on the trails which span the China clay mining area, where you can visualise how the industry works and its history. There are also some excellent woodland walking trails in the compound!

20. Pencarrow House and Gardens

A Georgian mansion located in Bodmin, Pencarrow House gardens are open to the public, with outdoor areas being dog-friendly.

Visitors can explore the house’s elegant artwork-filled rooms, although dogs aren’t permitted in the house itself – so to see the inside, you’ll need to visit in a group and take turns seeing the house.

Dogs are permitted anywhere in the gardens both on and off-lead; although they must be kept on a lead in front of the house and around the cafe.

The cafe is dog-friendly, with water bowls, and you can even purchase some doggie ice cream for your furry friend – perfect on a hot summer’s day!

21. Bodmin and Wenford Railway

A heritage railway running through the beautiful Cornish countryside, the Bodmin and Wenford line is a must-visit for all train fanatics or anyone who wants to experience some of Cornwall’s most beautiful views!

Dogs are welcome in the carriages provided they’re kept on leads. The only exclusion is that they’re not permitted in the restaurant car.

22. Visit the best dog-friendly beaches

sunset over Holywell Bay Beach Cornwall England UK

Cornwall’s stunning beaches are legendary, and there are plenty that welcome dogs all year round.

Some of the most popular year-round dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall include Holywell Bay, Lantic Bay, Porthkidney Sands and Sandymouth.

  • Holywell Bay Beach: Situated near Newquay , Holywell Bay has rolling waves and mesmerising cliffs, along with a mysterious cave to explore (it’s one of my favourite hidden gems in Cornwall!).
  • Porthkidney Sands: One of the quietest beaches around St. Ives , this is the beach to visit if you’re keen to avoid the crowds – and dogs are permitted all year round. The only restriction is that your pooch must be on a lead on the footpath from St Uny Church.
  • Lantic Bay: This South Cornwall Beach is one of the county’s best hidden gems. It’s a bit of a trek to reach, the fact that it’s not directly close to any towns means that it’s usually quiet, even in the summer.
  • Sandymouth: Situated near Bude (close to the Sandymouth Holiday Park, a pet-friendly caravan park!), Sandymouth is a stunning spot for a sandy walk.

Check out my full dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall guide here!

23. Trebah Gardens

TREBAH GARDENS, CORNWALL, ENGLAND - MAY 2016: Lake with a white wooden bridge and trees in the background

Trebah Gardens are among the best dog-friendly gardens in Cornwall.

Sprawling over 26 acres and boasts a stunning coastal backdrop, featuring exotic plants, waterfalls, and a private beach.

It’s a year-round dog-friendly attraction , with doggie tables in the cafe and complimentary poop bags!

24. Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens

Situated near Penzance, Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens is an outdoor art gallery boasting a variety of contemporary sculptures and offering stunning views of St Micheal’s Mount.

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the gardens and in the outdoor seating area.

25. Lost Gardens of Heligan

The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall

Go back in time in the Lost Gardens of Heligan , a 200-acre estate which were “lost” after WW1 and only “discovered” again in 1990 – hence the name!

They used to be part of the grand Heligan estate, which interestingly is somewhere I’ve traced my family history back to!

Dogs are welcome throughout the gardens – and there’s a lot to explore, including a jungle garden and a Victorian productive garden.

They must be kept on leads, as there are live poultry in the gardens.

26. South West Coast Path walks

Girl standing on the South West Coast Path, looking out to Looe Island.

The South West Coast Path spans over the entirety of Cornwall’s coastline, and among it are some of the best dog-friendly walks in Cornwall.

There’s a walk for every type of dog here – some trek the entire path with their owners, while others stick to the easier routes! Here are some of my favourites:

  • Looe to Polperro : A fairly easy (for SWCP standards) walk in South Cornwall, this trek connects the tourist town of Looe with the picturesque fishing village of Polperro.
  • Boscastle to Tintagel : Offering some of the best vistas and most beautiful views in Cornwall, this walk is a little up and down, but it’s not too long, making it manageable for energetic dogs.
  • St Ives to Zennor: This walk is challenging, but younger dogs will relish the adventure and freedom!
  • Sennen Cove to Land’s End : This short walk is doable for most dogs – although there’s a bit of up and down so older dogs may struggle. I always recommend this walk to people visiting Land’s End, as not only is it beautiful, but you can park your car in Sennen Cove for much cheaper than at Land’s End itself!

27. Bodmin Moor

A Jack Russell Terrier dog wearing a red harness and enjoying relaxing in the evening sun on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall

There’s a variety of walking trails on Bodmin Moor , including hiking up to Brown Willy (Cornwall’s highest point), Rough Tor and Golitha Falls.

Most walks, unless mentioned otherwise, are dog-friendly.

28. Camel Estuary

The Camel Estuary at Rock in Cornwall with Padstow in the far distance

The Camel Estuary runs from the North Cornwall coastal path (by Polzeath) and down towards Rock (opposite Padstow) and ultimately to Wadebridge .

Part of the Cornwall AONB, the estuary is a geological ria. This means that it was a valley which was permanently flooded by rising sea levels after the ice age.

A prime spot for birdwatching, its flat terrain makes it popular with cyclists, but you can also walk (or run) with your dog along the trail. It’s largely flat, which makes it suitable for most dogs.

29. Tamar Valley

Calstock, UK - 29 September 2019: GWR train on the viaduct over River Tamar by Calstock on the border of Devon and Cornwall

The Tamar Valley descends from Launceston all the way to Plymouth, marking the border between Devon and Cornwall.

It provides a multitude of lush riverside walking trails which are never too busy, ideal if you want to get off the beaten track.

I love the trail between Gunnislake and Calstock , which is connected by a regional train – so you can walk one way and take the bus back.

Are you ready for a doggie trip to Cornwall?

Dog with ball in mouth in Cornwall

Get ready for an adventure-packed trip with your furry friend in Cornwall – the ultimate destination for dog owners!

From exploring the great outdoors on beautiful walks to relaxing on our dog-friendly beaches, Cornwall has it all.

You can even visit top attractions like the Eden Project, Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm, and the Minack Theatre with your pup.

Remember to clean up after your pet and follow any restrictions at specific attractions or beaches, and you’ll have a blast exploring Cornwall’s stunning natural scenery, rich history, and dog-friendly activities!

Woman wearing yellow stands in front of microphone with flags behind her

Kristi Noem’s story of killing her dog points to class two misdemeanor

South Dakota governor’s account of family dog Cricket killing neighbor’s chickens may be an offence, according to state law

Kristi Noem, the South Dakota governor and Republican vice-presidential hopeful, may have committed a class two misdemeanor offence when her fated dog Cricket, a 14-month-old wirehair pointer Noem deemed “untrainable” for hunting pheasant, killed a neighbor’s chickens.

Under South Dakota law, “any person owning, keeping, or harboring a dog that chases, worries, injures, or kills any poultry or domestic animal is guilty of a class two misdemeanor and is liable for damages to the owner thereof for any injury caused by the dog to any such poultry or animal.”

Though Cricket’s chicken attack has made headlines in recent days, however, it was not the main subject of such reports.

Instead, Noem’s startling description of her decision to kill Cricket – and also an unnamed, un-castrated and unruly goat – has pitched her into an unprecedented political storm.

The story is included in Noem’s new book , No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong With Politics and How We Move America Forward.

The book will be released next month. Last week, the Guardian obtained a copy and reported the passage in which Noem describes killing Cricket and the goat after Cricket first ruined a pheasant hunt, then killed the chickens.

“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, before describing how she shot Cricket and the goat in the same gravel pit, the goat having to be shot twice, the second shotgun blast after Noem left the goat to fetch more shells from her truck.

Noem says what she thought she had to do was not “pleasant”, and describes how her actions startled a construction crew and confused her young daughter.

She also seems to acknowledge the possible effects of including the story in her book, writing: “I guess if I were a better politician I wouldn’t tell the story here.”

News of Noem’s tale did indeed set off a political firestorm , with observers suggesting she had irrevocably damaged her chances of being named running mate to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president who faces 88 felony charges of his own and was adjudicated a rapist but nonetheless maintains his grip on his party.

Noem twice defended her account of killing Cricket and the goat, saying as she does in the book that such actions are sometimes necessary in farming, and show her willingness to do difficult things in life as well as in politics.

But each defense added to her problems.

In the first statement, Noem both referred to recently putting down three horses and advertised her book, promising “more real, honest and politically incorrect stories that’ll have the media gasping”. That drew accusations of insensitivity.

In her second statement, Noem said she could “understand why some people are upset about a 20-year-old story of Cricket” but added: “The fact is, South Dakota law states that dogs who attack and kill livestock can be put down.

“Given that Cricket had shown aggressive behavior toward people by biting them” – Noem says the dog “whipped around to bite me” after killing the chickens – “I decided what I did.”

In a separate section of South Dakota’s codified laws, the definition of livestock makes no mention of poultry, which would have meant the law did not apply to Noem.

But asked about a South Dakota legislature definition that says livestock “means cattle, sheep, horses, mules, swine, goats, and buffalo”, omitting chickens or poultry in general, Ian Fury, Noem’s communications chief, advised the Guardian to “take a look at SDCL 40-34-1 and 40-34-2.”

after newsletter promotion

When the Guardian did, questions arose.

Section 40-34-1 of the South Dakota codified laws – Killing of dog lawful when disturbing domestic animals – says : “It shall be lawful for any person to kill any dog found chasing, worrying, injuring, or killing poultry or domestic animals except on the premises of the owners of said dog or dogs.”

Noem writes that she killed Cricket on her own property.

The following section – 40-34-2, Liability of owner for damages by dog disturbing domestic animals – seems to contain greater potential legal jeopardy.

It says : “Any person owning, keeping, or harboring a dog that chases, worries, injures, or kills any poultry or domestic animal is guilty of a class two misdemeanor and is liable for damages to the owner thereof.”

In her book, Noem writes that she apologised to the family that owned the chickens Cricket killed, “wrote them a check for the price they asked, and helped them dispose of the carcasses littering the scene of the crime”.

Asked if SDCL 40-34-2 indicated that Noem might have committed a class two misdemeanor, Fury did not immediately comment.

The South Dakota laws apparently applicable to the case of Noem and Cricket were passed before the dog’s death.

In her weekend statement, Noem said her story was 20 years old. That would place it in 2004, when she was in her early 30s, three years before she entered South Dakota state politics and six years before she won a seat in Congress as part of the hard-right Tea Party wave . Noem was elected governor of South Dakota in 2018.

South Dakota was the last of the 50 states to make animal cruelty a felony, passing legislation in 2014.

‘Where’s Cricket?’ Don’t Ask. Kristi Noem Defends Killing Her Dog.

In a forthcoming book, the South Dakota governor, seen as a potential vice-presidential pick, tells of shooting her hunting dog. And a goat.

Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota on Friday defended a story included in her forthcoming biography in which she describes killing a family dog on their farm, to her daughter’s distress — a grisly anecdote that instantly drew criticism from a number of political opponents.

Ms. Noem, a Republican who is widely seen as a contender to be former President Donald J. Trump’s running mate, shared details about shooting the 14-month-old dog, a female wirehaired pointer named Cricket, and an unnamed goat, according to excerpts first reported by The Guardian .

An avid hunter, Ms. Noem wrote that she had hoped to train Cricket to hunt pheasant, but that she proved “untrainable,” “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless” as a hunting dog. “I hated that dog,” Ms. Noem wrote, according to The Guardian.

It was after Cricket ruined a hunting trip, killed another family’s chickens and bit the governor that Ms. Noem recalled deciding to kill the dog; she shot Cricket in a gravel pit.

That was not the only blood Ms. Noem drew that day: She also shot a male goat that she called “nasty and mean.” Shot him twice, in fact: The goat jumped as she shot him the first time, according to The Guardian’s recounting of the book, so she fetched another shell and shot him again.

The whole ordeal was reportedly witnessed by a construction crew nearby. Ms. Noem wrote that as the workers returned to their jobs, a school bus came by to drop off her children.

Her daughter, Kennedy, Ms. Noem wrote, “looked around confused” and asked, “Hey, where’s Cricket?”

“I guess if I were a better politician, I wouldn’t tell the story here,” Ms. Noem wrote in the book, set to be published by Center Street on May 7. But she framed the day’s events as reflecting her willingness to do anything “difficult, messy and ugly,” whether that be in farm ownership or in politics.

The story drew condemnation on Friday from a swath of the political world, mainly to Ms. Noem’s left, including some anti-Trump Republicans and a number of Democrats. President Biden’s re-election campaign wrote on X that “Trump VP contender Kristi Noem brags about shooting her 14-month-old puppy to death.” And the Democratic National Committee issued a statement describing the passages as “disturbing and horrifying.”

Ms. Noem seized on The Guardian’s article to underscore her rural-America bona fides, promote her book and mock the news media. “We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm,” she wrote Friday on X , adding that her family recently had to “put down” three horses.

Politics latest: Defence secretary giving statement on MoD hack - as PM defends 'robust' China policy

The defence secretary is giving a statement about a hacking attack on the UK's Ministry of Defence, which Sky News understands China was behind. Meanwhile, Scotland's new first minister has been voted in by MSPs.

A company responsible for multiple government systems has been named as the contractor running the Ministry of Defence's payroll that was hacked by China.

Labour's shadow defence secretary John Healey has claimed in the House of Commons that SSCL (Shared Services Connected Ltd) is the contractor after Sky News revealed last night that the Chinese state had hacked the Armed Forces' payroll system .

Names, addresses and bank details of current Army, Royal Navy and RAF personnel and some veterans were exposed by the hack.

SSCL is a subsidiary of the Paris-based tech company Sopra Steria. The company is the largest provider of business support services for the government and the UK military, as well as the Metropolitan Police Service.

Its website says it provides payroll, HR and pension services to 230,000 military personnel and reservists, and two million veterans, with a "wholly safe and secure service" that is "data protected to the highest levels".

The prime minister said earlier he wanted to reassure people the MoD has already removed the network, taken it offline and is "making sure the people affected are supported in the right way".

China said the accusations were "completely fabricated and malicious slanders".

The UK embassy spokesman said: "I will hereby reiterate that the so-called cyber attacks by China against the UK are completely fabricated and malicious slanders.

"We strongly oppose such accusations. China has always firmly fought all forms of cyber attacks according to law. China does not encourage, support or condone cyber attacks.

"At the same time, we oppose the politicisation of cyber security issues and the baseless denigration of other countries without factual evidence.

"China has neither the interest nor the need to meddle in the internal affairs of the UK."

Sky News has approached SSCL and Sopra Steria for a comment.

The defence secretary has given a statement in the House of Commons on a hack targeting British service personnel.

He did not name China as the perpetrator due to the lengthy process required to be able to formally do so, although Sky News understands that it is responsible.

Here is what he says, as he says it:

  • Grant Shapps says there are "indications that a malign actor gained access to part of the Armed Forces' payment network";
  • He emphasises that it is an "external network" and is not connected to the main MoD system;
  • The defence secretary says the system is operated by an external contractor, and there is "evidence of potential failings by them which may have made it easier for the malign actor to gain entry" - a security review is under way;
  • In response, he says, the government has "enacted a multipoint response plan to support and protect our people";
  • The system is now offline, and a full investigation has been launched by the Cabinet Office, with the help of external experts;
  • Those affected have been alerted today, he says, advice is available on the government website, and a helpline has been set up;
  • Mr Shapps says all payments were stopped when the breach was detected, and the system was isolated - but he adds that all April salaries have been paid and pensions should not be affected;
  • But the defence secretary declines to release further details, although he does say the UK "cannot rule out state involvement";
  • He apologises to the people affected, saying the breach "should not have happened".

Grant Shapps is on his feet in the House of Commons giving a statement on China's hack of the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The defence secretary will tell MPs of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel, revealed by Sky News yesterday.

The government will not name the country involved, but Sky News understands this to be China.

The Chinese state is to be accused of two or three attempts at hacking MoD employees - including personnel.

China's foreign ministry has said it "firmly opposes and fights all forms of cyber attacks" and "rejects the use of this issue politically to smear other countries".

"This is not the collaborative place it has been in the past."

John Swinney acknowledged the divisions in the Scottish parliament in his first speech since MSPs voted him in as first minister.

Our Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies  says it was an attempt at outreach to other party leaders at Holyrood, as he'll need their help to govern effectively given the SNP leads a minority administration.

But he didn't shy away from the issue of independence, despite polls suggesting the country is still divided on that - around 50/50.

"While he needs to tell the party and the party faithful that is a priority," says Connor, he also needs to work with people not persuaded.

He also has work to do on controversial gender reform laws.

Despite Mr Swinney's vast experience, having been first minister before and held cabinet positions under Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf, today was still a "big moment" for him.

"He is back in the top job," says Connor, and has plenty of work to do.

Scotland's new first minister, John Swinney, has just spoken to journalists after MSPs at Holyrood voted him into the top job.

He says it's "very clear" the SNP wants to "move forward", and he'll "work with other political parties" to pursue his priorities.

He doesn't mention independence, instead citing an aspiration to eradicate child poverty.

"That will not happen overnight - these are deeply entrenched problems," he admits.

But he says he's "absolutely over the moon" to become first minister.

"I'm thrilled, I look forward to the challenge, and will give it everything."

New Scottish First Minister John Swinney has been welcomed to his post by Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross and Labour's Anas Sarwar.

He has been voted into the role of first minister by MSPs after being named leader of the SNP yesterday ( see 15.39 post ).

Both men wished him and his family well, but swiftly moved on to their concerns about the SNP's record in government.

Mr Ross said Mr Swinney cannot rely on the "tired idea of independence" and called for a "new policy direction".

He also called on the new SNP leader to "rule out any agreement with the Scottish Greens", who were in coalition with the SNP until Humza Yousaf booted them out earlier this month - sparking his downfall.

Mr Sarwar also expressed doubts about whether Mr Swinney would deliver the change Scotland is "crying out for".

"I fear this is more about managing the SNP than delivering for Scotland," he said of his election.

Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater said her party was still open to working with the SNP, despite their eviction by Mr Yousaf.

She urged Mr Swinney not to abandon "progressive" climate policies.

Former home secretary Suella Braverman has made an intervention in the Commons on Israel's offensive into the Rafah area of Gaza.

She said she met survivors of Hamas's massacre of young people at the Nova music festival on 7 October, as well as people who fought against Hamas militants on that day.

"We all want peace. We all want to see the end of civilian fatalities. But sometimes countries must fight for peace," she said.

"Israel has a right to defend herself, and duty to protect her people from the brutal terrorist cult of Hamas."

Mrs Braverman asked the deputy foreign secretary to confirm that the UK government will continue to support Israel "as she finishes the job to eliminate Hamas from Gaza".

There was something of a furore in the Commons as she took her seat in the chamber.

Andrew Mitchell replied that the ex-home secretary "makes clear in what she says that Israel has the right of self-defence".

He added that Israel "must abide by international humanitarian law".

In response to the deputy foreign secretary Andrew Mitchell's statement on the war in Gaza ( see post at 15.33 ), the shadow foreign secretary has said it is "extraordinary that the government did not bring forward a statement today" of its own accord.

"This is a profoundly concerning moment in this awful war," David Lammy said, adding ceasefire negotiations seem to be "going backwards", with the war escalating.

He accused Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, of ignoring the international community's pleas for the Rafah offensive to not go ahead, and asked Mr Mitchell what the consequences for Israel will be.

Mr Lammy criticised Israel for its airstrikes, Hamas for attacking crossings where aid has been getting in, and Israel for closing aid crossings.

He questions where civilians, notably children, can flee to from the Rafah area amid Israeli attacks, and asks if he agrees with the French that the forced displacement of any population is a war crime.

The shadow foreign secretary said Hamas's "cowardly tactics are reprehensible", but added: "That does not change Israel's obligation to follow the rules of war, or the government's obligations on arms exports."

He asks why the minister thinks the Rafah attack "does not present a clear risk of serious breach of international humanitarian law", which would trigger a halt to arms exports, and asks if Foreign Office officials have advised the legal threshold has already been met.

In response, the deputy foreign secretary said Mr Lammy has set out "what is effectively the policy of the government and the entire House".

On consequences for Israel, Mr Mitchell said the government is taking action through the United Nations Security Council, along with allies.

But he did not address the question about arms exports and legal advice on breaches of international law.

After being named the SNP's new leader yesterday, John Swinney has now been officially voted in as Scotland's first minister.

MSPs at Holyrood backed him taking over from Humza Yousaf, who formally resigned earlier today.

It's a quirk of the Scottish parliament that all parties can put their leader forward to become first minister in these votes, but there was no doubt Mr Swinney - who has held the post before - would win.

He won 64 votes, Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross got 31, Labour's Anas Sarwar got 22, and Lib Dem Alex Cole-Hamilton got four.

The Greens, who were in coalition with the SNP until Mr Yousaf booted them out last month, abstained.

He will lead a minority SNP government and get down to business pretty quickly, with First Minister's Questions to come on Thursday.
