The Scottish trio are due to hit the road this autumn for headline gigs in support of their Mercury Prize-shortlisted fourth album, ‘Heavy Heavy’ , which was released back in February.

Kicking off at The Dome in Brighton on October 20, the upcoming tour will also include a show at the Eventim Apollo in London (October 21), a double billing at Glasgow’s legendary Barrowland Ballroom (23, 24), a stop-off at the O2 Institute in Birmingham (27) and a date at Manchester Academy (28).

Tickets go on general sale at 10am BST this Friday (August 4) – you’ll be able to purchase yours here . Alternatively, fans can access a pre-sale from the same time tomorrow (August 2).

Check out the official tour poster in the announcement tweet below.

This summer has already seen Young Fathers make appearances at festivals such as Glastonbury , Latitude and Best Kept Secret. The band’s upcoming dates include slots at Green Man Festival , Connect Festival and Electric Picnic .

In June, the trio opened for Depeche Mode at their huge Twickenham Stadium concert . Speaking to NME recently , Young Fathers’ Graham G Hastings described that show as “a different beast” compared to what they’re used to.

“It took us back to how we always operated before when we were always playing to a wee crowd,” he added. “How do you make an impact in 30 minutes with people who don’t know you?”

Young Fathers also claimed to have a shared “telepathy”. Kayus Bankole told NME : “You hear the music, but it actually has life when you see it live.

“As much as we can see through the recording process, being together, having this bond and telepathic communication where we don’t even have to speak in the studio – that translates on stage.”

Additionally, the group revealed that they have “an abundance of ideas” for their next studio album. Check out the video in full above.

The conversation took place last week at the launch of the 2023 Mercury Prize, where ‘Heavy Heavy’ was shortlisted alongside records by the likes of Arctic Monkeys, J Hus, Jessie Ware, Jockstrap, RAYE and Ezra Collective .

The winner of the Mercury Prize will be announced at a live ceremony at London’s Eventim Apollo on September 7.

Young Fathers (SOLD OUT)

young fathers tour 2023 manchester

Scottish act, Young Fathers are known for always offering up a buffet of delights from many a genre and spinning them together to create something spectacular. Their new album Heavy Heavy is exactly that. A medley of soul, pop, rock, hip-hop, noise, and more it’s a delight to the ears and we can’t wait to have the trio present it and top tracks from their back catalog on our stage on the 7th of March!

The multi-award-winning group have won the Mercury Prize and Scottish Album Of The Year for their works and their first album in five years shows that there’s no sign of them slowing. A truly enigmatic band with a fabulously hard-to-define sound that will last the ages.

“No dress code required. Dancing, not moshing. Hips jerking, feet slipping, brain firing in Catherine Wheel sparks of joy and empathy. Underground but never dark. Still young, after some years, even as the heavy, heavy weight of the world seems to grow day by day.”

Their recorded music can be dark, dense and the lyrics ambiguous, but when you watch them live that kinetic energy is unmistakable. Apparent, visceral and highly addictive.

Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and G. Hastings met as kids and set their bodies against the tide. From the beginning they were obstinately not going to do what was expected.

Under disparate influences that ranged from Enya to Suicide, they began to create the unique sound of their early albums, Tape One, Tape Two, the Mercury Award winning DEAD, and then the face slap to the world, White Men Are Black Men Too and their second SAY Award winner, Cocoa Sugar, where the sound was refined and almost bent back, like a disjointed thumb, into an unnatural position.

Young Fathers deliver important message during breathless Manchester Academy performance

Young fathers returned to manchester touring their album heavy heavy which was released at the start of 2023.

Young Fathers stopped their fast-paced, frenetic Manchester Academy gig to deliver an important message to their audience.

To rapturous applause, vocalist Graham Hastings proclaimed ‘ceasefire now’, referencing the ongoing conflict in Gaza . This then saw the Mercury-Prize winning act perform the rather poignant Shame.

Saturday evening’s headline set from the Scottish act exuded pulsating energy. Evident from the opening, the thrashing drum beat, provided by Steven Morrison, drives the Young Fathers live experience forward - often leaving devotees with little chance to catch breath.

Such was the flawless act’s confidence, they dropped one of their calling cards early doors, in the shape of Get Up, and from there the tone was set. The band, supported by Nadine Shah at Manchester Academy , are on top of their game at current with their Glastonbury set , earlier this year, for many, being one of the standout moments from the Worthy Farm weekend.

Their current run of gigs is supporting their latest album, Young Fathers’ fourth studio release, Heavy Heavy which has received much praise and charted at number two earlier this year.

Young Fathers delivered a fast-paced energetic set at Manchester Academy

As brilliant as their records are, their music experienced live takes things to a whole new level. Many were delighted to see them back in our city after a mesmeric show at Manchester Albert Hall at the start of 2023 . There is an anarchic brashness to the band, enlisted by director Danny Boyle to help soundtrack his Trainspotting sequel, which is incomparable.

That snarling freneticism is perfectly emphasised when Kayus Bankole takes the lead. It is a welcome struggle to keep up with him. One moment he’d be leading the dancing with the band’s very talented backing singers to later climbing the venue’s speaker rigging.

In My View, which is one of the Young Fathers songs which allows Alloysious Massaquoi’s more tender vocals to come to the fore, was one of Saturday evening’s many highlights. Alongside Only God Knows and Geronimo - the latter from Heavy Heavy.

Alloysious Massaquoi, of Young Fathers, on stage at Manchester Academy

I saw, another newer release which sits perfectly with earlier Young Fathers material, concluded proceedings as the night’s ‘last song’. Before Hastings asked the packed audience ‘do you want one more?’ before adding ‘we don’t go off and do f**king encores’.

Toy, met with loud cheers from fans, brought Saturday’s astounding set to a close. A venue like Manchester Academy is a truly perfect setting for the Young Fathers live experience although, on their next return, one would expect they’ll be playing a venue with a bigger capacity - such is the demand for tickets.

But with a Mercury Prize win and a couple of recent BRIT nominations for Best Band and Best Album under their belts, this is the perfect chance to show they belong in such esteemed company.

Before they can, London indie-soul solo artist Murkage Dave makes light work of warming up the sold-out, historic venue all by himself. There’s the usual polite applause and curious glances as he arrives onstage, but through Dave’s fantastically catchy, self-aware and insightful 2000s R&B-meets-90s indie rock mash-up of tunes like Please Don’t Move to London It’s a Trap, World I Want to Live In and Murkage Dave Saved My Life, plus his sheer force of personality, he leaves like a conquering hero.

Young Fathers' 2023 album Heavy Heavy was one of the best of the year, and they’ve rightly been lauded for it, but as great as their utterly unique mixture of progressive rock, classic hip-hop, industrial electronica and traditional African rhythms is on record, it is absolutely dwarfed by their live experience. The lead trio are joined onstage by their usual live drummers, backing vocalists, guitar and keyboard players, but the thing that will make this particular set live long in the memory is the addition of the Manchester NIA Choir backing them up. Seeing about thirty people onstage at once, all belting out such spinetingling, powerful songs as Get Up or Geronimo, is a breathtaking sight. The choir is every bit as energetic as Young Fathers themselves, all-singing, all-dancing, everyone onstage together one giant, jumping, moving, thrusting mass of humanity, utterly lost in the music and the moment.

As great as it all looks, though, that’s nothing compared to how it sounds; the Royal Albert Hall is famous for its great acoustics, and it just about manages to control the sheer sonic weight of Young Fathers and the NIA combined. There’s been much talk over the years about the likes of Motörhead and Manowar being the loudest bands of all time, but even the likes of Lemmy would wince at the ferocity of noise that this evening generates. You can almost feel the sound of the choir barking Young Fathers frontman Kayus Bankole’s scream of “Yeah, yeah, yeah!” hitting you in the face during the final crescendo of closing track Toy . Live music in the modern era rarely feels so raw, so commanding or so brimming with life and passion as this.

Young Fathers may not have the profile or the iconic back catalogue (yet?) of some of the other artists playing across this week. But they have just as much natural star power, just as much talent and have unquestionably just put on the most spectacular show of the lot. They might just be Britain’s next generational band: the skies truly are the limit.

Since blagging his way onto the Hammer team a decade ago, Stephen has written countless features and reviews for the magazine, usually specialising in punk, hardcore and 90s metal, and still holds out the faint hope of one day getting his beloved U2 into the pages of the mag. He also regularly spouts his opinions on the Metal Hammer Podcast.

Live reviews

It doesn't matter what music you are into its impossible not to be blown away by Young Fathers live. Exploring the lineup for Visions they caught my ear. Hip Hop is not the normal genre I hangout in, but something intoxicating emanates from their sound that crosses genres. A raw power that reminds me of where hip hop started out. Excited by what I heard and saw on YouTube, I was proclaiming they would be act to see at the festival, yet they were more than that, they were one of the best live acts I have ever seen! Watching Young Fathers is more like watching a stage performance than a gig. Walking out with challenging staunchness, they created an air of voodoo mysticism that almost conjured you to dance to the beat. Being in the front row was insane! You could watch the sweat sparkling on their hard chests and look in the whites of their eyes as they leaned out into the audience, daring you to drink from their cup. Not breaking character for a second, each song dripped with energy. At times you didn't know where to look, from Bankole's stripped bare chest to Massaquoi moving across the room seemingly possessed by the sound. The ending was as slick and as well timed as the rest. They went out to "I heard", leaving Hastings on stage, backed by strobe lights, singing the chorus into a subdued mic, until the crowd took over, "Inside I'm feeling dirty, It's only cause I'm hurting". Then he was gone, leaving the crowd heaving, aching for more. Caught up in the wildness, at the end I was as drenched as they were. But my sweat was worth it. I can't help feeling I was present as something was being born into the consciousness of the mainstream.

What these guys do is spiritual, if you close your eyes their music gets in, it takes you to every dark and light place within, and if you open them you'll see that these are performers who care about connecting with their audience, maybe as much as playing music.

Loved the small venue, wish they could all be that intimate

Turned up from Blackpool, took an unpaid day off work, paid for travel and hotel, to receive an email four hours before the doors of the venue opening, saying that it was cancelled!!! Thing is, I didn't think to check my email as I was out on this trip, so I literally only found out when I turned up at the venue

musical defribillators who would wake the dead.

How they pull off urgent urban aggression with vulnerable raw tenderness I dont know, but they are seductive and addictive and you must kill to get a ticket to see these bold boys live.

caroline-byrne’s profile image

That was my first gig ever and I’ve listened to Young Fathers a lot before and I absolutely loved the gig, that energy that they have while performing is amazing, well done. I’m definitely going to see them again in the future

staltmanism’s profile image

This was my 7time seeing them..so I think I don't need to write a super long review on how great they are to experience live. Get yourself a ticket and you won't regret it. Can't wait to see them again this summer!!

mellow-things’s profile image

Awesome live band. They put their blood & guts into their performances. Pioneers, musicly & visually. O2 academy Glasgow isn't the best for sound but Young Fathers made it feel like it was the Barrowlands.

Stuartie81’s profile image

Amazing! The energy they gave off was so infectious, I was extremely hungover from the evening before and wasn't in the mood for it but once they started I couldn't help but get involved!

rob-marvell-smith’s profile image

Great show from the musicians sound system was pretty crappy though. Would see again at a different venue. Highly recommend this band who is into heavy hip hop and a crazy experience.

Daughters are using their Ticketmaster expertise to help Oasis-loving dads score tickets

Young women, including many Taylor Swift fans, are using their hard-earned knowledge of Ticketmaster's online system to help their dads score coveted tickets to the Oasis reunion tour.

“My dad has used Ticketmaster before, but not to the depth that Swifties have,” Ella Annable, 25, tells  TODAY.com .

Swifties, some of whom were caught in the pop star’s Eras Tour  Ticketmaster fiasco , used their hard-fought knowledge of the ticketing website and its potential hurdles to buy Oasis seats for their dads. The daughters are posting TikTok videos of their victories with the exhilarated reactions from their fathers.

Oasis, which disbanded in 2009,  announced  a reunion concert tour on Aug. 27.  Fans raced to Ticketmaster  to purchase tickets but faced long waiting times and  price spikes , similar to what many Swifties experienced in 2022 ahead of The Eras Tour. For a lucky few, their daughters came to the rescue — and shared their triumphs on TikTok.

Ella Annable waited on Ticketmaster’s three-hour digital queue to buy her dad Mitch seats at Oasis’ opening night concert at Wembley Stadium in London.

“Dad absolutely loves Oasis — he saw them play in Manchester before I was born,” says Annable. “He doesn’t love loads of things but he is hardcore about Oasis and football. When Oasis announced their tour, he launched a military-style operation to find tickets.”

Mitch, however, isn’t a tech whiz, especially under pressure, says Annable. She was more prepared, having gotten tickets to three Swift concerts, including one amid the Ticketmaster chaos.

On Aug. 31, Annable and Mitch, along with her mother and two brothers, logged onto Ticketmaster using multiple devices. With Annable on FaceTime, her brothers sat next to their dad to offer tech support.

“In the 1990s, apparently you would stand in line for tickets,” says Annable. “My dad said, ‘This is so new.’”

“He was getting super anxious but tried talking himself out of it, saying, ‘This isn’t a big deal,’” says Annable. “He was acting cool.”

Around lunchtime, Annable was able to purchase tickets for Mitch, and captured the family's excitement in a TikTok video . Her dad, she says, acted like Charlie Bucket winning a golden ticket in the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Oasis tickets

“The girlies walked (learned how to finesse Ticketmaster during Eras) so the dads could run (buy Oasis tickets),” Annable captioned her video with more than 1 million views.

On TikTok, people are loving the trend of daughters scoring Oasis tickets for their dads (and moms).

“There (were) Eras Dads, now there’s going to be Oasis Daughters. Can’t wait to see the bracelets and outfits,” wrote a commenter.

“I wish my dad was still here to experience Oasis coming back with me,” wrote another. Someone added, “This is the sweetest thing.”

Annable was happy to assist her dad, a rare position for a twenty-something daughter.

“I saw an opportunity to help,” says Annable. “When you see your parents happy, it makes you happy inside.”
