Björk says she’ll “start writing her next album” in 2024, confirms ‘Cornucopia’ film

The artist described her 'Cornucopia' shows over the past four years as "the most ambitious project I’ve travelled with"

Björk

Björk has shared that she will start writing her next album in 2024, along with confirming a ‘Cornucopia’ film.

  • READ MORE: Björk: “First you create a universe with sound, then you move into it”

The Icelandic artist was reflecting on the process of her ‘Cornucopia’ concert and theatrical production – which has toured across the world from 2019-2023 – in a recent interview, when she revealed that new music is on the horizon for next year.

“Well, Cornucopia was a strange project because we did it for a year, and then Covid came for two years,” she told Rolling Stone . “And then we started it again. We’re finishing it now around Christmas. It’s unusual in the sense that it’s been a four-year run with a big gap in the middle.”

She continued: “We did New York in May 2019, and then we did California in January 2022. The thing is, it’s so difficult to travel. It’s the most ambitious project I’ve travelled with. We have, like, 24 rotating curtains.

“So I think this is sort of the end of this show. And then, next year, I will start writing my next album. And next year there will be a film in the cinema.”

NME watched ‘Cornucopia’ in London back in 2019 , describing it in a four-star review as “an audacious, expectation-disrupting spectacular from an artist unbothered with people-pleasing”.

Elsewhere in the same interview, Björk revealed the backstory of her new single ‘Oral’ with Rosalía . The singer announced she was teaming up with the Spanish superstar in October in order to fight fish farming in Iceland.

“I recorded it between [1997’s] ‘Homogenic’ and [2001’s] ‘Vespertine’,” she said. “It was just so different; it was so poppy. It didn’t fit either album somehow. But I never forgot about it. It was always kind of rolling around in my brain.

Björk’s latest album was 2022’s ‘ Fossora ‘, which NME said in a four-star review was “heavier” but also “more hopeful than anything before”.

In a cover interview with NME , Björk explained how the grief of losing her mother influenced the record. “For everybody, to lose a parent and deal with it is a cornerstone of your life,” she said.

Back in September, Björk shared the fantastical animated music video for her new single ‘Victimhood’.

Brant Bjork is pretty much singlehandedly credited with the formation of the stoner rock genre after the release of single “Blues for the Red Sun” with his band Kyuss in 1992. While things may have moved on somewhat with Brant performing solo these days, he is still the king of Stoner Rock and absolutely kills it during any of his performances.

A big sound like Brant Bjork’s requires a big band and a big setup to go with it. The drum lines and guitar riffs are out of this world during one of Brant’s live shows, and his lighting and stage set up are awesomely rock and roll. This guy is as much a rock star today as he was in the early nineties, and there is no way any of his fans would deny this.

Brant’s solo career has been so successful, that he has a multitude of material to select from for a gig. While he may vary the set list here and there, Brant knows that his fans are there for the music they love and he provides them with the performances they’ve been dying to see. “Automatic Fantastic”, “Too Many Chiefs... Not Enough Indians” and “Low Desert Punk” are all standout tracks during a Brant Bjork gig. You’ll remember his show for a long time, but those three tracks will really make a huge impression.

Brant Bjork played Tuesday May 9th, 2017 at The Gov, Adelaide, South Australia. Brant really feels what he plays. He occasionally looks genuinely surprised by his guitar playing! Consequently it's hard not to enjoy the groove laden rock Brant Bjork and his band throw down. Jamming reigns during this set which also featured Sean Wheeler cavorting around for 3 songs. Sean's addition wasn't necessary but he was a bit of fun onstage. I enjoy all the nuisances of a live Brant set, the relaxed vibe, fuzzy grooves, bluesy grooves, pushing his specs back on his face, lyrics delivered like commandments, everything that happens on stage seems to make the gig better.

Björk Announces 2023 Cornucopia Shows

By Allison Hussey

Björk

Björk has announced a handful of tour dates for later this year, bringing her Cornucopia performance to stages in Australia, Japan, and Europe. See the full itinerary below.

In a statement about Cornucopia, which she’s presented in New York, Reykjavik, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in recent years, Björk acknowledged the connection between Cornucopia, 2017’s Utopia , and October’s Fossora :

cornucopia was always intended to be a world for both utopia and the album after that .… which is now out there called fossora . so i am truly excited to premier those 2 worlds colliding , this autumn in southern Europe ,.

The upcoming Cornucopia performances will include the flute septet Viibra and an expanded instrumental ensemble, plus a reverb chamber. Since releasing Fossora last year, Björk has shared a new video for “ Sorrowful Soil ” and picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album . Earlier this month, she shared a remix of Fossora ’s “ Ovule ” by Sega Bodega and Shygirl.

Björk relishing DP World Tour return in Sweden after 'tough' PGA TOUR adjustment

Alexander Björk says “it’s great to be back” on home soil as he makes his return to the DP World Tour for the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed after a “tough” adjustment to life on the PGA TOUR.

Alexander Bjork-2156166866

As part of the Strategic Alliance between the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR, the Swede was one of ten players to earn status on both tours for 2024.

Björk enjoyed a career-high eight top-tens - including one in last year's edition of this event - on the 2023 Race to Dubai to earn dual membership, giving the best on the DP World Tour access to the PGA TOUR while still maintaining flexibility to return to familiar surroundings in Europe and beyond.

This week sees the World Number 107 do just that as he tees it up at Vasatorps Golfklub for his first DP World Tour start of the campaign outside of the major championships.

“I really like playing in Sweden,” he said. “I’ve not been home a lot this year, so it’s great to be back.”

Björk, who celebrates his 34th birthday on Friday, has spent the last seven seasons on the DP World Tour with his lone victory coming at the Volvo China Open in 2018.

Prior to beginning his rookie season on the PGA TOUR at the start of this year, he had made just three starts stateside but has since made 12 further appearances with his best result coming when he finished in a tie for 11th at The American Express in January.

Robert MacIntyre, who won his first PGA TOUR title last weekend in Canada , revealed last month he had found life away home in the United States lonely, a challenge Björk is experiencing too.

“For me it has been tough (playing on the PGA TOUR),” he said.

“You go to a lot of new courses, I’ve never played any of them. They are a bit longer. New lifestyle, longer away from home, so it has been quite tough for me.

“It’s more lonely over there, you tend to stay with your team, over here it’s more friendly, more camaraderie.”

So, just as a return back home proved a fillip for MacIntyre, fellow European Björk hopes the same will be the case for him as he forms part of a strong Swedish group targeting a home victory as 78 men and 78 women compete for the same trophy and prize fund in Helsingborg.

“It’s a little different, but it’s actually exactly the same, we just play with the women,” said Björk, who finished inside the top 40 at last month’s US PGA Championship.

“The golf is exactly the same, so you don’t think about it that much when you play, you just try and play your game.

“(My game) was pretty good at the US PGA Championship. Tee to green was really good, not great on the green but I had a decent result and a little bit of a rest after that.

“We’ll see where I am this week, but hopefully it’s good.”

'I haven’t won yet, which is a little frustrating... hopefully I’ll get more chances'

While Björk may be looking to rediscover his best form, his countryman Sebastian Söderberg returns to his homeland hoping to turn an already consistent campaign into one with silverware.

Söderberg, who is nine spots higher in the Official World Golf Ranking than Björk, finished runner-up twice back-to-back as he finished in the top five in three consecutive events to top the Asian Swing Rankings and earn a spot at the US PGA Championship, where he made a hole-in-one at Valhalla.

Now, refreshed after a two-week break, he looks to capitalise on his fine run of results which has seen him climb to fifth on the Race to Dubai Rankings by adding a second DP World Tour title to his name alongside his Omega European Masters triumph in 2019.

"(This season has) been really solid, a lot of good golf," he said. "I haven’t won yet, which is a little frustrating. I feel like I’ve put myself in position a few times.

"I’ll keep working, keep sharpening the game and hopefully I’ll get more chances.

Sebastian Söderberg

"Every week you find something you’re trying to get better at on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. You always feel the same teeing up, there’s always a few question marks in the game.

"But I’ve been playing well and hopefully I can keep building on that."

With good crowds expected, Söderberg is excited to take on some of the expectations on the home players' shoulders at a venue he played at 15 years ago while still an amateur.

"It’s always so much fun playing at home," he said. "I’m looking forward to the week. You get a chance to have a lot more friends and family here to watch. It’s going to be an exciting week. If you play well, then the crowds come out."

Ohio State Names Kirin Kumar Head Softball Coach

6/4/2024 11:28:00 AM | Softball

Won four MAC regular season championships and three tournament titles at Miami University

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kirin Kumar has been selected as the next head coach for the Ohio State softball program, Mike Penner, executive associate athletics director, announced today. Kumar comes to the Buckeyes after a highly successful four-year run as the head coach at Miami University. She will be the ninth head coach in program history.

"It's an honor to be chosen to lead the Ohio State softball program," said Kumar. "I'd like to thank Mike Penner [Executive Associate Athletics Director], Gene Smith [Senior Vice President and Athletics Director] and Ross Bjork [Senior Advisor for Intercollegiate Athletics] for this tremendous opportunity. My immediate sense during the interview process was that Ohio State is a place that truly combines elite athletics with world-class people. I can't wait to get started and build on the great tradition of excellence at Ohio State."

A two-time MAC Coach of the Year with the RedHawks, Kumar was 174-56-1 (.755) during her time in Oxford and won three MAC Tournament championships, four MAC regular season titles and led her team to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons. The RedHawks were 107-16 (.870) against MAC competition and also picked up non-conference wins over Tennessee, Georgia Tech (twice), South Carolina, Louisville (twice), Kentucky, California (three times) and Michigan.

"We're excited to welcome Kirin to the Buckeye family," said Penner. "What she did in a relatively short amount of time at Miami was remarkable. As we got to know her during this process, her passion for the game and for the student-athlete experience shined through. The future is bright under her leadership."

At Miami, Kumar coached 32 All-MAC honorees, 23 all-region awards, six All-America honorees, three MAC Freshman of the Year award winners and two MAC Player of the Year and one MAC Pitcher of the Year. Her teams also excelled in the classroom, capturing 33 Academic All-MAC accolades since 2021.

Kumar's 2024 team was powered by one of the most potent offenses in NCAA history. Miami hit 160 home runs – second-most in a single season in NCAA history – and scored 507 runs. The RedHawks led the nation in home runs, home runs per game (2.76), slugging percentage (.724) and scoring offense (8.7 runs per game) while finishing third in batting average (.348) and fourth in on-base percentage (.451).

Miami concluded the 2024 campaign with a program-record 49 wins and was ranked in the national polls for the first time in school history. Individually, Miami had eight NFCA All-Region honorees and two All-America selections. Karli Spaid, who led the nation with 36 home runs, fell just one home run shy of matching the NCAA record for home runs in a season and was one of 10 finalists for National Player of the Year by USA Softball. She ranks second in NCAA history with 103 career home runs and went on to become the first Miami player ever to be drafted to play professional softball.

Miami's remarkable 2024 campaign also saw eight players earn first team All-MAC honors. The Redhawks took home four major individual awards as well, as they had the Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Freshman Pitcher of the Year. After winning the MAC Tournament for the third consecutive year, Miami played in the Knoxville Regional.

In 2023, Miami advanced to the Evanston Regional final, picking up NCAA Tournament wins over Eastern Illinois and Kentucky before falling to No. 12 Northwestern. Kumar and her staff were the NFCA Mideast Region Staff of the year in 2023. The year prior, in 2022, Miami finished 40-17-1 overall and 24-5 in conference play. The RedHawks also picked up a win in the NCAA Tournament over Saint Francis and dropped a heart-breaker to Virginia Tech, 5-4.

Miami went 46-10 overall and 36-2 in MAC play in Kumar's first year, both conference records at the time. For her efforts, she was named MAC Coach of the Year and her and her staff were named Mideast Region Staff of the Year in 2021.

Prior to taking over the Miami program, Kumar had assistant coaching stops at six different schools from 2006-2020. From 2019 through an abbreviated 2020 season, she was at Virginia Tech, where in 2019 she helped the Hokies earn an ACC regular-season title and Coastal Division crown. Working with the infielders, Kumar tutored two all-conference players, an ACC Freshman of the Year honoree and three NFCA all-region (Mid-Atlantic) selections. Under her tutelage, the Hokies had the fourth-best fielding percentage (.969) and committed only 47 errors, the fewest in school history.

Kumar came to Blacksburg following a two-year stint at NC State, assisting with hitting while also running the team's defense. She's also worked as an assistant in two different stints at Tulsa (2015-16 and 2006-10) as well as North Carolina (2011), Western Kentucky (2012-13) and Tennessee Tech (2014).

The Santa Ana, California native played collegiately at Georgia Tech and was a four-year letterwinner for the Yellow Jackets. Kumar saw action in 251 games, which was the second most in program history when she graduated. She was a part of Georgia Tech's first two ACC championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament all four years.

Kumar earned her bachelor's degree in business management with a minor in finance from Georgia Tech in 2005.

For Her Third Album, Angélica Garcia Adds Her First Language: Spanish

“Gemelo” is a largely electronic exploration of all kinds of dualities: “With any music I make from now on, I’m going to be writing in both languages.”

“My blood speaks Spanish to me,” Angélica Garcia sang in “Red Moon Rising,” a track on her 2016 debut album, “Medicine for Birds.” Garcia, who was born in California, was living in Virginia; the album leaned toward indie-rock and Americana. But the lyric turned out to be prophetic.

She was already thinking about the legacy of her maternal grandparents, who are from Mexico and El Salvador, and the musical heritage her parents maintained. Garcia’s second album, “Cha Cha Palace,” delved further into what it meant to be a Chicana growing up bicultural in the San Gabriel Valley — a quintessentially American experience, yet a very individual one. “Been wearing my roots and flying this flag,” she sang in “Jícama,” which former President Barack Obama listed among his favorite songs of 2019 .

“One day I showed my grandmother ‘Cha Cha Palace,’” Garcia, 30, said in a video interview from the kitchen of her apartment in Los Angeles. “And I realized I’d made this whole record about growing up in El Monte, and she didn’t even understand it. It just hit me that I’m missing a whole side of my culture and people because of the language I’m choosing to write in.”

Garcia’s new album, “Gemelo” (“Twin”), out Friday, expands on both her bloodlines and her ambitions, and features lyrics in Spanish. True to its title, its songs are full of dualities: angels and demons, grief and healing, dreams and realities, mirror images. The album opens with a somber chorale titled “Reflexiones” (“Reflections”), while in “Gemini,” Garcia sings, “I see double everywhere I go.”

The music is largely electronic, unleashing the directness of Garcia’s voice — sometimes ghostly and airborne, sometimes a near-scream — amid programming, loops and layering. There are moments that hint at Kate Bush, Bjork, M.I.A. and Santigold.

Garcia grew up speaking Spanish at home with her grandparents, but said she lost it “once I got into the public school system.”

“Honestly, I think the most punk thing I ever did was write in Spanish as a Chicana,” she added. “There were all kinds of feelings from everybody. Some people were like, ‘Your Spanish is really bad, don’t do this, it’s embarrassing.’ And then you have other people like, ‘Screw Spanish, it’s the language of the colonizer,’ yada yada yada.”

But, she explained, “I just realized that this is something I want to do. With any music I make from now on, I’m going to be writing in both languages — or all three if you count Spanglish as its own language.”

For Garcia, each has its own mood and musicality. “To me, English feels like a sword fight,” she said. “It’s very cutting and sharp and quick. Whereas Spanish feels like there’s just this poetry to it. You stroll around something to get to it. Or you’re sitting in front of a window on a rainy day writing. And then Spanglish feels like a party.”

“Cha Cha Palace” was released in 2020, and Garcia was mid-tour when the pandemic set in. “Gemelo” got its start amid pandemic isolation and introspection.

“I was putting a lot of work and intention into understanding where I came from and where my family came from,” Garcia said. “I remember keeping all these journals like a madwoman, brainstorming and putting everything on the wall and trying to connect everything. I was trying to understand what things, what qualities of theirs that I maybe carried, like nature versus nurture. What is ingrained in me? And what is all mine?”

One of the first songs she came up with was “ Juanita” ; it arrived, she said, like “a gift.” It’s an electronic cumbia — a bedrock Latin American rhythm — with lyrics about a mystical encounter: “You made me wake up/ Your voice the sound of stars,” Garcia sings. Only after she wrote it did she learn that one of her great-grandmothers was named Juanita.

Garcia grew up surrounded by music, singing and harmonizing with her family. Her mother had a recording career in the 1990s, billed as Angelica ; her stepfather worked in A&R, though he later became an Episcopal priest in Virginia. Garcia passed auditions to study at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she learned the subtleties of classical and jazz technique; her classmates included Phoebe Bridgers and members of Haim.

But some of her most important lessons came from her mother, who was steeped in the volatile emotionality of Mexican rancheras. “Her way of teaching was to just make me start over,” Garcia recalled. “‘No, do it again. I don’t believe you!’ When you’re singing dramatic music, you have to go all the way. I was learning the power of tapping into my emotions.”

The indie scene in Richmond, Va., gave Garcia the room to try different styles and experiment; she was playing in five bands at once while she was making “Cha Cha Palace.” She moved in with her grandparents when the pandemic set in, and then to Brooklyn, where she spent a year and a half before returning to Los Angeles early this year. In New York, she worked at House of Yes, a dance club, performance space and party room in Bushwick.

“Every night was a different theme,” she said. “I’d be biking home at 4:30 in the morning in my little go-go outfit, watching the moon and the sun exchange places, and avoiding rats.”

At the same time, she was constructing new songs — largely with her voice, singing and beatboxing the rhythms, melodies, harmonies and hooks. During the interview, she picked up a TC Helicon looper, a gadget that she uses constantly, onstage and off. “The most free that I feel is singing, so the looper would help me a lot to flesh out ideas,” she said. “It’s almost my wife.”

Garcia was already in touch with Carlos Arévalo, the guitarist for the eclectic, retro-tinged Los Angeles band Chicano Batman. He had discovered her music among prospective opening acts for a 2020 tour that was canceled by Covid. In 2021, she began sending him songs in progress; he suggested ideas and possible producers. Eventually, she convinced him to produce the album himself — his first album production.

“I knew this was a pivotal record for her in her career,” Arévalo said via video interview from a Chicano Batman tour stop in Oklahoma City. “She wanted the world to really see for the first time who she was on her terms, not what the label thought she should be and not what her community thought she should be.”

Garcia had firm ideas for what she wanted: “She didn’t want it to sound like a band,” Arévalo said. “She wanted it to sound like pop, electronic. She had a running joke: ‘Like Radiohead with booty.’”

“Gemelo” doesn’t aim for dance-floor simplicity; nor does it latch onto the world-conquering pop beat of reggaeton. It’s an album of introspection and catharsis, about what Garcia calls “cycles of grief.” Garcia concocts her own beats, often irregular ones, and she revels in dynamic contrasts, from quiet and dulcet to explosive.

As she was writing the songs, Garcia said, “there were things that had me in my room crying, very low points. First it’s just the grief, right? But then you get up and try to voice it and you get excited when you hear, ‘Oh, but with that bass line, it sounds really cool.’ It’s kind of the coolest superpower ever that musicians have,” she added. “We can take something that really could debilitate so many people and make it into something else — a whole other experience.”

In “Color de Dolor” (“Color of Pain”), she sings about drawing inspiration from sorrows: “Even though I will never sever the tie with my pains/ I paint them full of colors,” she vows. And in “El Que” (“He That),” she confronts a figure who undermines her, who “Makes cold, robs energy, controls, bewitches,” with a crescendo building as she warns, “Don’t follow me with your shadow — I have my light!”

For Garcia, music has always been “the one place where I could say exactly what I thought,” she said. “My whole life, I’ve just tried to follow where the music was calling me.”

She smiled and pointed to her head. “It’s very loud in here.”

An earlier version of this article misstated a song title on Angélica Garcia’s new album. It is “Gemini,” not “Gemini II.”
