9 Habits of Frugal People To Apply Every Time You Travel

A recent survey from Nationwide Travel Insurance found that travel is on the rise, with 91% of survey respondents saying they have domestic travel plans in 2024 and 50% planning to travel internationally. Forty percent of those polled said they plan to travel more this year than they did in 2023.

Yet, with inflation still high and fears of a recession on people’s minds, you may want to save money while planning your dream vacation. Fortunately, the Reddit forum r/Frugal has plenty of tips for low-cost travel.

Bring Snacks and Beverages

If you’re driving to your vacation spot, pack snacks and beverages so you won’t be tempted to splurge on pricey hotel water or snacks. If you’re flying, stop at a local grocery store before you check into your hotel or Airbnb.

Redditor JStyles mentioned, “If I’m staying anywhere a few days I usually buy a case of water from a supermarket or drug store when I arrive.”

Think strategically, though. Some tourist areas increase prices. If you’re driving, you have more flexibility to buy snacks and drinks at home or even on the way to your destination in lower-cost locations.

“I’ve found two places in the US where you’re much better off packing your food from home or from way outside of town if you’re driving there,” wrote Redditor Nopumpkin_here. “That’s Gatlinburg, TN, and Yosemite, CA. I’m sure there are lots of other places like that, where you’d have to shop a few cities or towns away.”

Nearly every frugal traveler on Reddit recommended cooking or preparing meals in your room rather than eating at restaurants daily. If your hotel has a kitchenette or you’ve rented an AirBNB or VRBO for your trip, you can eat just like you do at home.

But if you prefer something simpler, that’s okay too. Sandwiches and microwavable soups make easy meals on the road.

Shop Locally for Food

Not a fan of cooking, especially while on vacation? Redditor “PurpleHippoB*tches” said they bought local foods including meats, cheese and baked goods at a local grocery store in Paris to enjoy a daily picnic. “I always tried to save on food by only having 1 meal out per day,” they wrote. “A lot of people say to cook your meals, but personally I don’t want to cook on vacation and especially I don’t want to eat like at home. I want to try local food instead so this is my no-cook compromise.”

Redditor KnuteViking, who also said they were a fan of local food in Europe, advised, “To get a better price while still getting great food, the key is usually [to] find the local shops, not the tourist shops.”

Choose Restaurant Meals Carefully

“If you plan on getting breakfast and lunch grocer[ies] but want to eat out for dinner you are better off eating out at lunch and having a sandwich for dinner,” Redditor Interesting_Gene_780 wrote. “Lunch menus are cheaper than dinner.”

Redditor LauraSaurus5 advised frugal Redditors to try a Southern breakfast if they have an opportunity in the U.S.

Also, don’t forget the free continental breakfast at the hotel. Many frugal Redditors try to snag extra muffins, fruit or hard-boiled eggs for a light lunch.

Pack a Thermos or Water Bottle (or Both)

Redditor Hjlelpdinven said they always bring a Thermos on trips. You can fill it with water after you go through airport security, make tea with free hot water and tea bags from home, and even fill the thermos with free coffee from the continental breakfast.

Visit Free Attractions

Saving money on vacation isn’t just about reducing food costs, though scaling back on restaurant meals can make a big difference in costs without impacting enjoyment.

You can also save money by visiting local attractions with “pay-as-you-wish” entry fees or free entry. Well-known examples include free admission to The Bronx Zoo every Wednesday and free entry to government landmarks like the White House. All Smithsonian museums, art galleries and zoos (except the Cooper Hewitt in New York City) are free to visit, according to the Smithsonian Institute website.

Book the Cheaper Hotel Room

If you’re torn between booking a luxury suite or a smaller hotel room, Maximum-Excitement58 advised fellow Redditors, “If you’re not going somewhere to just sit in your hotel room, get the cheapest room at whatever hotel/resort you’re staying at.”

However, if you’re planning to eat meals in the room, call ahead and ask if the room has a mini-fridge and microwave.

Use Public Transportation

Whether you’re getting to and from the airport or around town, price out buses and shuttles rather than Uber or a taxi service. Once you learn the public transportation for the city you’re visiting, you can save a bundle, experience life as a local, and avoid traffic.

Redditor Such-Shape-7111 said he and his wife rent electric scooters in cities across the U.S. to get around for short distances. Such-Shape-7111 makes sure to stay safe on the road, though. “We bring our bike helmets clipped to our backpacks,” he said.

Pack Your Necessities in Your Carry-On

If you’re flying, always pack an extra outfit, underwear, and travel-sized toiletries (under 3.4 oz. each, packed in a clear, one-quart plastic bag) in case the airline loses your luggage. “Might save you some cash if you have to replace some things,” Redditor Roweira said.

Cutting corners on some aspects of your trip can leave room to splurge on the things that truly matter or even allow you to afford that dream vacation.

Guide to Reddit AMAs

So, you’re thinking about hosting a Reddit AMA? Here’s what you need to know:

But first, what is a Reddit AMA?

Reddit, a massive online community home to user-led discussions on every topic imaginable, bills itself as “the front page of the internet.” The site gets over 430 million unique visitors per month . Reddit AMAs (which stands for “Ask Me Anything”)—whether they’re timed around the news cycle or simply focused on a topic of great general interest—are Q&As designed to bring an authority on a subject to a community of interested people. It’s an organic, engaging, and fun way to increase awareness of your work, your research, and Boston University.

What’s the value in participating?

On a basic level, the value of an AMA is the connection you make with people interested in your topic of expertise. You’re able to share your invaluable firsthand knowledge and experience with the Reddit community, and highlight your research in front of large audiences. Professors who have hosted AMAs have also reported a corresponding uptick in media interest: reporters often use Reddit to source experts, and AMAs are easily discoverable on search engines too. Additionally, professors’ participation is valued by BU leadership. Each AMA gets featured in the following day’s Executive News Briefing, which is sent to the President, Deans, department chairs, and more.

A few things to keep in mind if you decide to host one:

1. What topic should I discuss?

Topics centered around the news cycle, seasonality (such as a dietitian answering questions about how best to keep your health-centric New Year’s resolutions at the beginning of January), or of general interest to a Reddit audience (read: informed, and on the geeky side) are your best bets. The Reddit platform also presents faculty members with the opportunity to leverage their expertise and directly connect with populations in need during critical time periods (such as an epidemiologist sharing advice for navigating daily life during the COVID-19 pandemic – or a neurologist sharing tips for getting a better night’s sleep and improving well-being during a time when the general public’s daily routines and schedules drastically and unexpectedly changed). If you’re particularly interested in something currently happening in the world that relates to your specialty, it’s a good indicator that it is the right time for an AMA. There are bound to be tons of people on Reddit interested, too, and they have questions for an expert like you!

2. What subreddit should I host my AMA on?

We recommend the following subreddit: “ r/IAmA : I Am A, where the mundane becomes fascinating and the outrageous suddenly seems normal.” This thread has over 21 million subscribers and is the number-one place on Reddit for AMAs. You can have an AMA on a smaller subreddit—for example, r/science or r/movies—but you’re more likely to receive a higher volume of questions on the I/AmA subreddit. Plus, if you host there, you can cross-promote it on other subreddits (more on that later).

3. When should I host my AMA?

It’s really up to you. We’d recommend choosing a day midweek (historically, Thursday’s tend to drive the most traffic), and starting in the afternoon (we recommend around 12 p.m. ET). Make sure you have 2.5 hours minimum blocked out for the AMA!

4. How do I get started?

First things first: you need to make a Reddit account if you don’t already have one. We recommend picking a username that incorporates your name. Then, sitting down and creating a title for your AMA, a bio, and your “proof” photo are your next steps. Please see the attached screenshots for reference on what that should look like (below). Your title should be explanatory, catchy, and clearly allude to your expertise and the topic of your AMA.

Example title:

AMA Title

Your bio should expand upon your expertise and explain “why” you’re doing the AMA—for example: is it timed around a particular news event? Is it because you’re an Alzheimer’s researcher and it’s National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month? Your intro should incorporate the phrase “ask me anything.”

I’m Sandro Galea, physician, epidemiologist, author, and Dean at the Boston University School of Public Health. Ask me anything about health, wellness, and global public health.

Example bio:

I have been named an “epidemiology innovator” by TIME and one of the “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” by Thomson Reuters. After serving as a field physician for Doctors Without Borders where I witnessed case after case of preventable diseases and injuries firsthand, I realized our national understanding of what constitutes “being well” is wrong. Currently, we focus on the lifestyles we adopt to stay healthy, and the insurance plans and medicine we rely on when we’re not. While all these things are important, they have not proven to be the difference between being healthy and unhealthy. I am here to discuss what we should really think about when we discuss health and wellness on an individual, national, and global scale.

Ask me anything about:

  • What is wellness?
  • How should we think about wellness in our own lives and in our communities?
  • What is the United States getting wrong about health, wellness, and healthcare? What could the government be doing differently? What could individuals do differently?
  • Why people in the US, despite spending more on health than any other country, remain less healthy and live shorter lives than people in other rich nations.
  • How current events such as gun law reform, immigration, environmental deregulation, the implications of tax reform, and welfare and entitlement programs intersect and impact health.
  • How US history, wealth, politics, and power contribute to today’s healthcare crisis.

I have held academic positions at Columbia University, University of Michigan, and the New York Academy of Medicine. I am an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, and chair of the board of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health. Previously, I was president of the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) and of the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science (IAPHS). I also discuss how health is tied to current conversations in Fortune Magazine.

Lastly, your proof photo—a picture of you holding a sign that lists your Reddit username, and the date and time of your AMA—needs to be either 1) submitted with your  calendar request  or 2) tweeted out from your Twitter account. You have to link to the tweet itself that you sent out with the image in the “proof” section.

Example of “proof” photos:

Photo of Dr Naina Limbekar's Reddit AMA "proof" photo on Twitter

5. How do I promote it?

Tweeting your AMA “proof” picture and then getting in touch with the PR office here at BU to retweet it from Boston University’s main accounts is a great place to start. In addition, you can “crosspost” it on other subreddits. That means you can post the link to your r/IAmA thread with a brief description of what it’s about in r/science if it’s about science, or r/movies if it’s about movies. Get creative. What communities do you think would be most interested in your area of expertise? There’s probably a subreddit dedicated just to that. Pro tip: it always helps to contact subreddit moderators in advance to let them know you’d like to cross-post your AMA on their page.

Another avenue for promotion is spreading the word internally throughout your BU community (whether that’s your school or college via newsletters or on the  BU event calendar  ahead of time, or by having your school’s social media team post about it on your school’s social media channels in advance and as soon as the AMA thread is up and running). Additionally, you should tweet out the link to your AMA on your own Twitter account both in advance and as soon as you can after it is “live.” This way, your followers can easily click the link if they see it on Twitter, and go directly to your Q&A.

Finally, reach out to the organizations, associations, reporters, and publications the AMA “host” is affiliated with, asking them to help promote the discussion ahead of time and once the AMA goes live. This will help attract relevant, informed, and engaging individuals to the conversation. BU PR developed an animated graphic template that we customize for each faculty member, and post on Twitter along with high-level social copy. This method ( example here ) has unique benefits: it is convenient for the parties sharing your content because it only requires one or two clicks to like and/or retweet, it enables you to control the promotional messaging, and it earns high-quality engagements directly on your post, which is advantageous for your Twitter channel’s health. We’re available to help develop a graphic customized to your AMA – so please don’t hesitate to ask!

Two examples of Twitter promotion:

Twitter AMA promo

If you want, you can schedule your AMA on the r/IAmA calendar (this is not required, but we advise it if possible). Thirty minutes before your AMA is scheduled to go live, post your information on the r/IAmA thread.

6. It’s go time!

BU PR or the r/IAmA moderators you submitted a calendar invitation to will send a hyperlink to click to launch your discussion. Thirty minutes before the conversation is scheduled to begin, click on the hyperlink, double-check that your title, bio, and proof picture are complete and accurate, and hit submit! If you did not make a calendar request, you can also launch your AMA  through this link .

Please allow 2.5 hours of your schedule that day for the AMA. Launching the AMA thread, sharing the live link over social media, and waiting for the first few questions to roll in account for the first half hour of this 2.5 hour window. Then, you must be available to answer questions for approximately 2 hours after that. You can 1) stop answering questions at the end of the 2-hour mark from your official start time, 2) answer them for longer, or 3) take a break and keep answering them later on at your leisure. It’s a good idea to check in on your AMA several hours after the stated end time because there might be a surge of questions later on you may be interested in answering as well.

Questions can start rolling in as soon as you create the AMA thread on the r/IAmA subreddit. Here’s what a question looks like on a Reddit AMA:

7. Any Reddit oddities I should be aware of before I do this?

Yes, Reddit can be a strange place, so it’s a good idea to prepare yourself for a wide variety of questions! A popular fun one: “Cake or pie?” Feel free to let them know which tasty treat you prefer. However, you might come across some not-so-fun questions: ones that are inappropriate, or ones that make you uncomfortable. Please know that you may ignore those. Some questions are better left unanswered!

Additionally, please remember that folks who ask questions often have follow-ups, so it’s worth checking back on already-answered questions from time to time to see if they have another query or didn’t feel they got enough information.

If you share any recent media coverage, research papers, presentations or other materials of yours within your responses, make sure you’re not coming off as self-promotional. Instead, feel free to frame these items as resources that further answer the question at hand.

Lastly, you may find it is easiest to “sort” the comments/questions on your AMA by “new,” so you can see the newest questions at the top of the page as they come in. Otherwise, they are sorted by “best,” which means most “upvoted.” We have found this is effective in seeing every single question and keeps you from having to scroll down through the page over and over.

Donald Trump was convicted on felony charges. Will he go to prison?

A New York jury's historic conviction of Donald Trump on felony charges means his fate is now in the hands of the judge he has repeatedly ripped as "corrupt" and "incompetent."

Two experts told NBC News that it's unlikely Trump will be imprisoned based on his age, lack of a criminal record and other factors — and an analysis of thousands of cases found that very few people charged with the same crime receive jail time. But a third expert told NBC News he believes it is "substantially" likely Trump could end up behind bars.

Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records , a class E felony that is punishable by a fine, probation or up to four years in prison per count. During the trial, Judge Juan Merchan threatened to put Trump behind bars for violating his gag order, but it’s unclear whether the former president will face similar consequences now. It's expected that any sentence would be imposed concurrently, instead of consecutively.

Former federal prosecutor Chuck Rosenberg, an NBC News analyst, said it's unlikely that Merchan would sentence Trump, 77, to any jail time, given his age and his status as a first-time, nonviolent offender. "I’d be very surprised if there's any sentence of incarceration at all," Rosenberg said. “Of course, he did spend a good bit of time insulting the judge who has the authority to incarcerate him.”

The next step for Trump at this point is his sentencing, which is set for July 11. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg would not comment Thursday on what type of sentence he’d seek, saying his office would do its speaking in court papers in the weeks ahead.

Arthur Aidala, a former prosecutor in the Brooklyn district attorney's office who's now a defense lawyer, said the judge will most likely use some of the time before sentencing to research similar cases to determine what the median sentence is.

"He wants to know before he sentences someone what the typical sentence is," Aidala said, and would consider other factors, like Trump's age and lack of a criminal record, while also taking into account the lack of injury caused by the crime. Aidala said he believes whatever punishment Merchan comes up with would be "a non-jail disposition."

An analysis conducted by Norm Eisen, who worked for House Democrats during Trump’s first impeachment, found that roughly 1 in 10 people who have been convicted of falsifying business records are imprisoned and that those cases typically involved other crimes.

Ron Kuby, a veteran New York criminal defense lawyer, took a different view.

“Judge Merchan is known for being a harsh sentencer when it comes to white-collar crimes committed by people who have wealth and privilege and power,” he said.

Kuby added he believes "it is substantially likely Judge Merchan will sentence Trump to jail or prison time," despite the logistical and practical complications that locking up a person with Secret Service protection would entail.

Kuby said that's because the criminal scheme went on for over a year and included a number of bad acts on Trump's part.

“It’s an entire course of conduct he was involved with — not just one bad decision,” he said.

Trump, however, most likely doesn't have to worry about missing the Republican National Convention, where he's expected to accept the party's nomination, even though it's taking place just days after his sentencing. Kuby said he'd most likely be able to remain free while he appeals the conviction.

Trump's behavior during the trial, including his flouting Merchan's gag order by making comments about witnesses and the jury, isn't likely to be a factor in the sentencing decision, Kuby said. It's also highly unlikely that comments that appeared to be aimed at sidestepping the gag order by Republican officials who attended the trial as Trump's guests will figure into Merchan's reasoning, Kuby added.

"If the judge is smart, he'd stay away from that," Kuby said. "The best way for judges not to get reversed in a sentencing is to stick to the facts and circumstances of the crimes and conviction."

Rosenberg said that despite Trump’s frequent criticisms of Merchan, which he likened to “a batter who’s been yelling at the umpire from before the first pitch,” Merchan appeared to run “a clean and fair trial.”

Rosenberg and Kuby agreed that Trump would appeal the verdict. Kuby said that could delay Trump's serving whatever punishment Merchan doles out for years, even if the appeal is ultimately unsuccessful.

His first appeal will be to the state Appellate Division, a midlevel appeals court, and it will almost certainly not decide the appeal until after the November election, Kuby said. If he loses there, he could then appeal to the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals. A loss there would be followed by a request to the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case.

If all that fails, Kuby said, he could then try turning to federal court in another attempt to eventually get the case before the Supreme Court.

The appeals process typically takes a long time — Kuby said he had one client who staved off prison time for six years — but there's another potential complicating factor in this case.

"If he becomes president of the United States, he cannot be incarcerated in a state prison" while he's in office, Kuby said, because it could prevent him from fulfilling his constitutional duties. If he lost his appeals, "by the time he leaves office — if he leaves office — he'd be ready to be incarcerated," he said.

Time may be an illusion created by quantum entanglement

The true nature of time has eluded physicists for centuries, but a new theoretical model suggests it may only exist due to entanglement between quantum objects

Time may not be a fundamental element of our physical reality. New calculations add credence to the idea that it emerges from quantum entanglement , in which two objects are so inextricably linked that disturbing one disrupts the other, no matter how distant they are.

COMMENTS

  1. I am an American time traveler from 2072, AMA : r/AMA

Let people ask you anything. I am an American time traveler from 2072, AMA. Time travel has always existed. Today, or 54 years ago, I'm telling you to ask me anything you want to know about the future. I will answer it honestly, but I cannot reveal my identity due to wanting to avoid criminal prosecution for contacting the past.

  2. I am a time traveler from the year 2130. Ask me anything. : r/AMA

As a time traveler, I have seen the world population change over time. In my timeline, the world population in 2130 was around 10 billion, which was lower than the projected 12 billion. The population growth was slowing down due to various factors, such as lower fertility rates, higher mortality rates, and reduced migration rates.

  3. I know quite a bit about time travel, feel free to AMA

Time travel (at least what I've been used to) does not take a long time, this is either due to the ship's ability to travel quickly, or the limits of human consciousness to perceive time. It could take thousands of years, but the mind doesn't perceive it and you don't age in-transit, so it seems instantaneous.
