The Trip Ending, Explained

 of The Trip Ending, Explained

‘The Trip’ (original title: ‘I onde dager’) is a Norwegian action thriller that follows married couple Lisa and Lars on a weekend getaway to their cabin. Unbeknownst to either, they both harbor plans for killing their spouse and attempt to put them in play once they arrive at the cabin. When three escaped convicts get added to the mix, all manner of violent chaos ensues.

The couple finds themselves alternatively bickering with each other while also fighting for their lives, making the whole affair a tongue-in-cheek mix of sinister violence and dark humor. The film’s ending doubles down on its satirical tone and closes things in an unexpected way. If you think you missed some of the details from the film’s finale, here is ‘The Trip’ ending, explained. SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Trip Plot Synopsis

The film opens by introducing us to television director Lars, who specializes in making cheesy soap operas. After being rebuked by his war veteran father for being soft and spoiled, Lars begins to pack for a weekend trip with his wife, Lisa. Before leaving, he also visits a hardware store and purchases a hammer, rope, and a saw, and hides them in his car. En route to their cabin in the woods, the couple argues briefly and eventually settles into a tense silence.

At the cabin, the two set things up and begin to cook dinner. Their attitudes tell us that they’ve been married a long time, but constant bickering also points towards deeper issues in their relationship. After a game of scrabble, over which they once again argue, Lisa goes to bed while Lars finishes his drink.

The next morning Lars collects rocks in a bag and leaves them on a boat. He then retrieves his new hammer and attempts to kill Lisa with it only to have her electrocute him first. When he comes around, Lars finds himself tied to a chair sitting across from Lisa. She laughs at his simple plan and outlines her own plot to make Lars’ death seem like a hunting accident. In the ensuing argument, the husband blames his wife for being unfaithful, while the latter retorts by saying that Lars has ruined them financially because of his gambling addiction. Just as Lisa is about to shoot Lars, she is attacked from behind by their simpleton gardener Viktor.

the trip ending

A scuffle eventually ensues in which Victor is killed, and the husband and wife fight for control of the gun. A shot is accidentally fired into the roof, which collapses to expose three men hiding in the attic. It is then revealed that the three men — Roy, Petter, and Dave — are escaped convicts that took shelter in the cabin hours before Lars and Lisa arrived. Now, they hold the couple hostage and threaten to kill them.

The Trip Ending: Are Lars and Lisa Dead or Alive?

Lisa eventually convinces the convicts to let them live until she can go to the bank the following day to get them the money. Tied and held hostage in the basement, the two are eventually able to overpower Roy and escape the house. A game of cat and mouse ensues between the convicts and the couple, and Roy is killed. At one point, when things seem hopeless for Lars, his father surprises them by arriving at the cabin and holds the convicts at bay. After a final showdown on their boat, Lars and Lisa are able to kill off Petter and return to their cabin.

the trip ending

That evening, the two sit together, and Lars mentions how all their financial problems still exist. However, Lisa seemingly has an idea, and we next see the couple on the news, animatedly recounting their life-threatening experience. They are subsequently featured on talk shows, and the film closes with scenes from the production of a movie based on their encounter with the convicts.

Hence, Lars and Lisa come out bruised, battered, but alive at the end. One of the film’s main gimmicks is to repeatedly put the central characters in situations where their death seems imminent, and so, on multiple occasions, it looks like either Lars or Lisa is about to die. Particularly memorable is the scene where Petter tries to push the husband’s face in the running blades of a lawnmower for want of murdering someone creatively for once.

the trip ending

However, the couple is able to overcome insurmountable odds repeatedly and lives to tell the tale, literally. Lars and Lisa seemingly benefit from being attacked by the convicts as their story of surviving the brutal crime catapults them to fame. Since no one can crosscheck their narrative, the two bend the facts of the tale to their benefit. In the film subsequently made based on their story, Lisa gets the lead role of herself and, though not mentioned, it seems like Lars is directing. Therefore, the husband and wife survive the ordeal and unexpectedly come out significantly better off because of it.

What Happens to Roy, Petter, and Dave?

The three hardened criminals that escape from prison and take shelter in Lars and Lisa’s cabin initially have the upper hand once they capture the couple. However, the film thrives on turning tables, and one by one, though completely outmatched, Lars and Lisa take down the convicts. Roy is the first to die when a shotgun accidentally goes off and splatters his head on a window. Dave is then shot in the leg by Lars’ father and killed by Lars as he tries to bandage his shattered leg.

the trip ending

Petter is the hardest to kill, and despite being stabbed with a pitchfork and run over by a car, he continues to hold Lisa hostage in order to get the money she promised him. Eventually, Petter’s arm is severed when Lars pushes him into the engine of their speedboat, and he is pushed overboard. The stones that Lars initially intended to use to drown his wife’s corpse are strung around Petter’s neck, and he is dragged down to a watery death.

Why Do Lars and Lisa Want to Kill Each Other?

Soon after they arrive at the cabin, it is revealed that Lars and Lisa want to kill each other. Both have formulated plans and alibis for their crimes but have failed to account for the other attempting something similar. As they hold each other hostage at gunpoint, their arguments reveal why they want to go to such drastic lengths.

the trip ending

Lars initially claims he is motivated by Lisa’s infidelity, but it is eventually revealed that he is interested in her life insurance payout. On the other hand, Lisa blames Lars for fettering away all their money on gambling and claims to want freedom from him. However, it is revealed that she, too, is after her husband’s life insurance.

Hence, in keeping with the film’s tone of dark humor, it is revealed that both husband and wife are equally selfish and want to kill their partner to get their life insurance payout. However, their ordeal, and the unexpected windfall that comes with it, seem to have solved their financial and marital problems, at least for the time being.

The Trip (2021) ending explained – what danger is inside the cabin?

the ending of the Netflix film The Trip 2021

This article discusses the ending of the Netflix film The Trip (2021), so it will contain major spoilers.

Read the review.

The Trip is a Norwegian dark comedy thriller that tells the story of a married couple, Lisa (played by Noomi Rapace) and Lars (played by Aksel Hennie), who seem hell-bent on killing each other. Due to financial hardship, both parties plan on killing the other for life insurance during a trip in a cabin. But when it appears as though they may both kill each other, they learn that three escaped inmates have taken shelter in the cabin.

As a result, the three prisoners, Petter (Atle Antonsen), Dave (Christian Rubeck), and Roy (André Eriksen), take Lisa and Lars hostage. In a scene that possibly goes too far for a comedy, Dave threatens to rape Lars until Lisa states that she will provide the prisoners with money for their release. And after they accept, Petter, Dave, and Roy enjoy the luxury of the cabin whilst Lisa and Lars are left to reflect on their marriage.

Seemingly making amends, Lisa and Lars make a plan for freedom. Upon claiming to need the toilet, Lars knocks out Roy with a sock of billiard balls, which then sets off a chain of events that sees the three prisoners attempt to find Lisa and Lars. Upon Roy refinding them, Lars shoots Roy in the head.

Netflix film The Trip (2021) ending explained

There appears to help at hand when Lars’s father, Mikkel, appears at the cabin, and he shoots Dave in the leg. But lurking from behind is Petter, and he stabs Mikkel before he throws him on top of what appears to be a very sharp  lawnmower. With chaos breaking out, Lisa heads towards a boat whilst Dave looks for anything to tend to his leg wound. But he’s out of luck when Lars finds him first. Before Lars ponders on where to shoot Dave, Lars steals his sweater and kills him.

After Mikkel dies in a hammock, Lars chases after Lisa who is now trapped on the boat with Petter. Now instead of Lars vs Lisa, it’s Lars and Lisa vs Petter. They have a battle on their hands. Even the use of a fire extinguisher and a flare gun isn’t enough to kill Petter. However, Lars is eventually able to overpower Petter and pushes him into the boat’s engine, slicing his arms off.

“Sorry, but you no longer add value.” And with that, Lars and Lisa chuck Petter into the river and watch as he drowns. But when the rope tangles around Lar’s foot, Lisa is left with a choice. Save Lars or leave him to die. Ultimately, she saves him. (Quite the turnaround from how she felt at the beginning of the movie).

As The Trip concludes, Lars and Lisa are alive but broke. That is until the media take an interest in their story of survival. One thing leads to another, and they end up making a screenplay on their experience, making them millionaires. Although to save face, they change a few details, such as removing the moment that Lars licked Petter’s shoe.

The Trip: Recap and Ending Explained

  • Aziza Larasati
  • November 15, 2022

What happens when two troubled spouses are going on a trip and planned to kill each other, only to find out that there are intruders in their house who are trying to kill them? That’s pretty much what The Trip is all about.

The Trip (the original title called I Onde Dager ) is Norwegian thriller movie on Netflix ( Windfall ) which was released on October 8, 2021, and was launched globally on October 15, 2021. Slightly inspired by the movie in 2005 Mr. & Mrs. Smith (which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), The Trip follows the story of a dysfunctional couple who planned to kill each other.

the trip

Although The Trip is designated as a thriller and gory kind of movie, it also includes dark humor in it. The husband and wife have a movie industry background. Both of them are trying to work it out on their marriage, or maybe just give up and just want to kill each other.

Tommy Wirkola serves as the director of the movie. He also writes the screenplay, alongside Nick Ball and John Niven. The movie runs with the duration of around 1 hour and 53 minutes.

This Norwegian movie receives a quite positive review from critics and its audiences. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 91% critics’ review and 68% audience score. Meanwhile, IMDB gives it 6.9 out of 10 scores. The positive feedbacks are all thanks to the great performance by the actors, the brilliant dark comedy, combined with thriller and suspense.

The Trip stars Noomi Rapace as Lisa, Aksel Hennie as Lars, Atle Antonsen as Petter, and Christian Rubeck as Dave. There are also Andre Eriksen as Roy, Nils Ole Oftebro as Mikkel, among many others.

So how is the recap of the plot and how does The Trip end? Read more to find out, but we have to warn you that it will contain * major spoilers *.

The Trip: The Plot Summary

the trip

This Norwegian movie is a dark comedy thriller that revolves around a married couple named Lisa and Lars, who both of them are having a movie industry background—but not so successful ones. Lisa is an actress and Lars is a director, although both of them are struggling so hard with their careers.

Their relationship is in trouble due to financial hardship, and that Lars accused Lisa to cheat on him with a guy named Diego. They decided to go on a trip to a cabin, as they secretly planned to kill each other.

However, their plans are ruined, after three prisoners named Petter, Dave, and Roy, turn out has intruded to their cabin after escaped the prison. The three of them then take Lisa and Lars hostage.

Dave then threatens that he will rape Lars. To save him, Lisa says that she will give the prisoners a large amount of money, as long as they release both of them.

Agree with that, the prisoners put Lisa and Lars in the basement, while they are enjoying the cabin. In the basement, Lisa and Lars are reflecting on their marriage—and probably planning for an escape plan.

Lars then asks Roy to let him go to the toilet. However, when he gets out of the toilet, he hits Roy in the head with billiard balls and runs away. Lisa also managed to let herself go. However, as she tries to find the car keys, Roy catches her. Lars also comes to fight Roy, and eventually Lars shoots Roy in the head.

The Trip: How Does It End?

the trip

At the end of the movie, we can see that Lisa and Lars are failed miserably to run away from the two prisoners left. Dave is going to slit Lisa’s throat, while Petter is going to throw Lars into some kind of lawn mower. That’s when a help comes, which is Lars’ father, Mikkel.

Mikkel hits Petter with a car and shoots Dave in the leg, although Petter then stabs Mikkel from the back. Mikkel then dies on a hammock.

Petter brings Lisa to the boat to go away, while Lars is killing Dave and goes after the boat. On the boat, Lisa and Lars are trying to fight Petter, and pushes his hand to the boat’s engine which destroys his arms.

After saying that Petter has no longer add value, Lars and Lisa throws Petter to the water. Lars is almost drowned to the water as well, however Lisa decides to save him.

After the incident, they are trying to sell the story and make it into a movie in order to gain money out of it and be famous in their career—which they did.

Steve Coogan Reaches the End of ‘The Trip’

He plays a version of himself in the movie series, which is ending with “The Trip to Greece.” In reality “I’m not quite as precious as I come across. But there’s certainly a lot of truth in it.”

the trip ending

By Kathryn Shattuck

As fans of “The Trip” movies know well by now, Steve Coogan has a shelf full of Baftas, the British equivalent of the Oscars. It’s a feat turned running gag throughout the films as he flaunts it at virtually every opportunity.

So when Rob Brydon, his traveling companion and comic foil, asks Coogan what he’s proudest of in “The Trip to Greece,” the answer is perhaps not surprising.

“My seven Baftas,” Coogan says.

“For me, it would be my children,” Brydon says.

“Well, because you haven’t got any Baftas,” Coogan replies.

“You have got children,” Brydon retorts.

In “ The Trip to Greece ,” opening Friday on video on demand and some theaters , the preening Coogan and laissez-faire Brydon, playing slightly exaggerated versions of themselves, come to the end of their decade-long series of gastronomic excursions. The structure is familiar: They drive through breathtaking scenery on their way to multi-star restaurants and hotels, peppering their conversations with bon mots, celebrity impersonations and insults.

Only this time, the director Michael Winterbottom has given the men six days to retrace Odysseus’ 10-year journey from Troy to Ithaca, while finding their own ways back home.

In a Zoom session from his house in Sussex, England, a mustachioed Coogan, 54 — who in real-life received two Oscar nominations for “Philomena” (2013) along with those seven Baftas — spoke about staying relevant in middle age, imagining where his character winds up, and quarantining with his 23-year-old daughter, Clare, and her boyfriend.

“I’m just this kind of slightly annoying dad that comes in and goes, ‘What are you guys doing?’” he said, with a flash of goofy laughter. There wasn’t a Bafta in sight.

These are edited excerpts from our conversation.

How have you been coping during quarantine?

I’m lucky that I’m in lockdown with my daughter, who’s just a fantastic cook. Each night I go, “Oh my God, this is the best thing I’ve ever tasted in my life.” And I’ve been writing a lot, because that’s one thing that we are still able to do. We already isolated ourselves.

What have you been churning out?

I’m a bigamist writer; I’ve got various partners. I’m writing a post-woke comedy-drama — a sort of romance, really — with a female writer in L.A. We’re navigating the rocks of the new sexual political landscape, shall we say. I’ve also written a drama about a hippie commune in Wales in 1969. And Jeff Pope and I wrote about the woman who found the body of Richard III in a car park. This is the third screenplay we’ve written since “Philomena,” and it’s quite odd that two middle-age men write stories about female empowerment. [Laughs] We’re desperately trying to hang on by writing things that are proper, modern.

I’ll write another Alan Partridge , too [a reference to his vain talk-show host character]. It’s nice to do stuff that’s pure comedy because then when you write it, you laugh a lot. And when you laugh, it releases endorphins — or is it serotonin? Pleasure chemicals, I get them confused. [It’s endorphins.] But anyway, it makes you feel good.

With “The Trip” movies, you’ve eaten and written your way through northern England, Italy and Spain. How did you, Rob and Michael decide that Greece would be your last adventure?

Four felt right. And Greece, it was a classic. The Greek philosophy and mythology lent themselves to this huge, contemplative quality, and having me returning home and mimicking Homer’s “Odyssey” to this sort of conclusiveness. We also felt on a level, “Let’s quit while they’re still good.” That’s not saying we’d never do another one, but it feels like we should wait. Right now our thing is middle-age angst, but pretty soon it will just be old-man angst.

These movies are a showcase for Steve’s attempts at erudition. Do you actually have all that knowledge rattling around in your head?

I do prep work, but I’m naturally curious. I had a quite good education, I would say. I went to a Catholic school, which in this country was a bit like a free private education. The curse is, if you’re from very humble origins and you haven’t had a good education, you don’t know what you don’t know. Then if you’re half well-educated, the curse is that you’re aware of the knowledge you don’t have. That’s what I felt I was. In answer to that, I love to learn.

So yes, I do my homework. Rob doesn’t do his homework, but that’s almost deliberate, because he can trivialize my quest for the truth, as it were.

This time around, Steve’s father is seriously ill. You lost your own father two years ago. What was it like tapping into such personal memories?

Funnily enough, I did a version where I was very emotional. I wept as I would when I re-emulated some of those scenes. Then Michael wanted me to do it again and just hold it all back. I think it’s probably better for that, because audiences don’t like completely candid displays of emotion, whether happiness or sadness. Audiences like to look for stuff. And painful stuff is where you find good art, I suppose. Otherwise you end up with some vanilla-flavored mediocrity.

What misconception might viewers of “The Trip” have about you?

I’m not quite as precious as I come across. But there’s certainly a lot of truth in it as well.

Onscreen, Steve grapples with relevancy in middle age. And offscreen?

Right now I’m probably the happiest I’ve been — with the proviso that there’s no such thing as a state of big happiness. I’d like to work a bit less, to be honest. But I’m grateful that I’m able to make creative choices based purely on whether I believe in the thing I’m doing. Also, weirdly, this lockdown meant that I discovered a parallel universe in my daughter that I hadn’t really been aware of before, because I’ve not spent this long with her since she was a child. That’s a kind of strange blessing.

What life do you imagine for Steve now that his journey has ended?

When I shot that scene of going home, it felt strangely poignant — almost as if, I said to Rob afterward, I got dementia in my old age, I might imagine that that was my life. It felt real. And in my head I suppose it plays out that he does come home, he does return to the stability of those people that love him. Craving the stability more than the excitement of being rootless, of being nomadic. Yeah, it’s a funny little thing, playing a version of yourself.

The Trip to Greece Movie

I’m an unabashed fan of “The Trip” and its three sequels. They’re the British talk-verité road comedies in which Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon , playing heightened versions of their quicksilver acid-tongued middle-aged selves, drive around some lovely European country (England, Italy, Spain, Greece), stopping for lavish lunches at Michelin-star restaurants as they slice and dice each other’s egos with the quippiest of thoughts — a one-upmanship game between frenemies that periodically bursts out into their dueling impersonations of some legendary movie star. (The most hilarious was Michael Caine. They’ve also done indelible takeoffs on Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Sean Connery, Woody Allen and Hugh Grant.)

It’s hard to pinpoint what it is that gives the “Trip” movies their special tang, but the whole rapid-fire competitive banter of Coogan and Brydon, most of which they make up on the spot, reminds me of the razzing prankishness of “A Hard Day’s Night” with a touch of the conversational enchantment of “My Dinner with Andre.” These are comedies to take seriously (though not too seriously). They’re also dramas to take lightly.

And now, it seems, they’re going to be missed.

Popular on Variety

With the release, on May 22, of “The Trip to Greece,” Coogan, Brydon and their director, Michael Winterbottom , have announced that they’re packing it in. There will be no more “Trip” movies — at least, for a good long time. Each of the four films, going back to “The Trip” in 2010, was carved out of a six-episode BBC series (each series, in total, is about one-and-a-half times longer than the film it was whittled down to). To do another movie, they would need, theoretically, to do another series, and that’s not in the cards.

Yet I think that letting go of the films now is a mistake. Sure, you could make a case (as I have) that the “Trip” films are kind of running out of tricks, that we’ve seen Coogan and Brydon do even their mightiest impersonations once too often, and that the wistful grace notes of all-the-world’s-a-stage melancholy that give the series its soul were there from the beginning, so there’s no real point in trying to “deepen” the material. It’s already about as deep as it’s going to get.

“The Trip to Greece,” however, falls way too short of being the grand finale this series deserves. You could say that they’re going out humbly, without fanfare (and without any risk of jumping the shark), and that that’s a good thing. It’s also trés British. But here’s why Coogan and Brydon should consider one more go-round, and here’s a suggestion of what, exactly, I think it should be.

“The Trip to Greece” wasn’t an ending, it was just a stop.

The new movie takes pains to have a dark undercurrent or two, especially after Coogan learns that his father has been taken ill. Yet even this sets up what is less a closing note than a kind of spiritual cliffhanger: What’s Coogan going to do when his vanity comes up against mortality? A great question, but it’s never answered.

For a series that is this fixated on American movie stardom, it needs to get out of its Euro comfort zone.

The “Trip” films are epicurean buddy-movie travelogues that might have been bankrolled by the European tourism industry. Each one, among other things, is a tossed-off advertisement for the glories of landscape, cuisine, history. The documentary shots of food being prepared in restaurant kitchens — we tend to see a dish tossed in a smoking pan just before it’s served to our heroes — are like privileged glimpses of ancient trade secrets. It’s all very luscious and Continental. So where would they go next — to France? Sweden? Germany? Ireland? No way. That formula really is spent. As a result, I think it’s finally time that Coogan and Brydon journeyed to the belly of the beast. The fifth and final “Trip” film should be….

“The Trip to California.” The two would start in the Pacific Northwest, drive down through San Francisco along the Pacific Coast Highway, and end up — of course — in Los Angeles, where they can finally confront the place that’s been the source of so many of their dreams.

They need to try out some radical new impressions.

In every “Trip” sequel, there are golden oldies — a touch of Pacino, a mumbled snippet of Tom Hardy — and at least one great new one, like the Dustin Hoffman-and-Laurence-Olivier-in-“Marathon-Man” set piece that’s the funniest sequence in “The Trip to Greece.” Yet as much as I adore these flashbacks to the ’70s, there’s a whole new world out there waiting to be mimicked into oblivion, and these are the guys to do it, even if Coogan now claims he couldn’t care less about being an impressionist. (Maybe so, but he’s so great at it that that’s just his version of every comedian wanting to play Hamlet.) The two could do Brad Pitt, John Travolta, Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey, Quentin Tarantino…the sky of empathetic ridicule is the limit. “The Trip to California” should be the Coogan-and-Brydon celebrity roast to end all celebrity roasts.

They need face-to-face encounters with one or two of their prime targets.

This may sound like it edges into shark-jumping terrain, but how perfect would it be if, in the final “Trip” film, they actually ran into Michael Caine — and wound up conducting a three-way Caine dialogue with him? Or if they did the same thing with Pacino? The last “Trip” film should arrive at a delirious funhouse-mirror satirical high, leaving us with a sensation of deliverance. A scene like that would do that trick.

The film should be a light-handed meditation on comedy and acting.

We’ve heard enough, in bits and pieces, about Coogan and Brydon’s personal lives to kind of know who they are. But what is it that drives them, in their hidden hearts, as actor-comedians who emerged from a culture — England’s — where acting is part of the spiritual-behavioral lifeblood? In “The Trip to California,” their six-day trip should culminate in a joint appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” that’s as rivetingly funny and drop-dead revealing, in its way, as the talk-show climax of “Joker.” (They could meet Michael Caine there!) All of which is to say…

“The Trip to California” should be a heady celebration of showbiz.

Where, in Hollywood, does fantasy end and reality begin? And where is that line in these two men’s souls, as they play themselves in a series of movies where every moment is “real” and every moment is a performance? “The Trip to California” should end the series by going out with a big bang of meta hilarity. We, along with Coogan and Brydon, deserve nothing less.

Spoiler Discussion for The Guilt Trip: Main characters

Spoiler Discussion for The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones

The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones. Published on August 3, 2021 by Minotaur Books.

Rachel: in her early 40s, she’s been married to Jack since her 20s and they are the parents of a college-aged son. Rachel and her college friend Noah had been planning a gap year trip after graduation, but Rachel bailed on him since she’d just met Jack. Soon after that, she got pregnant, married Jack, and postponed her dreams of being a teacher

Jack: Rachel’s husband and Will’s brother. He works at a record company.

Paige: Rachel’s best friend. Married to Noah, a friend of Rachel’s from college. A lawyer (barrister?)

Noah: Rachel’s close friend since college.

Will: Jack’s younger brother. Plays golf with Noah. Runs a water sports company.

Ali: Will’s fiance. Used to work with Jack but changed jobs.

Plot Summary for The Guilt Trip

Rachel and her husband Jack are headed to the destination wedding of Jack’s younger brother to Ali, a woman Jack used to work with.  Their friends Paige and Noah are invited as well. The six of them are staying at a beautiful beachfront villa in Portugal.

Spoiler Discussion: The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones takes place at a wedding in Portugal

Rachel notices that Ali seems to be annoying Jack recently, and Jack tells Noah, Paige and Rachel that he doesn’t trust Ali. He thinks Ali cheated on Will with a guy at work. Rachel thinks that Jack should have told his brother, but he disagrees.

DAY TWO:

Paige, Will, Rachel and Noah go to the supermarket. On that trip, Paige mentions that she was hesitant to marry Noah because she thought he might be in love with Rachel.

When they get back from the store, Rachel is convinced that Ali has been with Jack in their room. She finds a rhinestone on their floor that she is sure fell off Ali’s dress.

The men go surfing. As Rachel watches Noah surf, she remembers that she and Noah slept together the night before Noah left for the gap year trip they’d planned. Rachel decided to stay behind with Jack, who she’d just met.

Spoiler Discussion for the Guilt Trip: picture of a huge ocean wave

The guys get caught in a big wave and Noah has to be dragged out of the water.

Paige confesses to Rachel that her marriage to Noah has been a little lackluster lately. She asks Rachel what she’d do if she found out Jack was cheating on her, and Rachel says she could not forgive him.

Paige asks Rachel if she think Ali is flirting with Jack.

As they are getting ready for the rehearsal dinner, Jack tells Rachel that her reaction to Noah’s accident got him suspicious about Rachel’s feeling for Noah.

Jack suggests that Noah is still in love with Rachel. Noah suggests that Jack had something to do with his accident.

At the rehearsal dinner, Noah and Rachel are talking to a guest who asks to see a photo of Rachel’s son. When Rachel shows her, the woman says Rachel and Jack’s son Josh looks just like Noah.  Noah storms off and Rachel goes after him.

the trip ending

Noah asks Rachel if Josh could be his child. Rachel tells him the dates don’t add up, though she’s clearly not really sure. Rachel says they made their choices and have to move on, but Noah says he loves her.

Rachel sees Ali watching her and Noah talk and worries that Ali overheard what they were saying .

Paige corners Rachel and says that she overhead Ali talking to someone about Rachel, asking them “does his wife know?” Paige says she and Jack were dancing and Ali came up and whispered something to him.

Noah apologizes to Rachel for his outburst the night before. Rachel tells Noah she’s afraid Ali heard them talking.Rachel goes to Ali and Will’s room to look for her. The room is empty so Rachel looks through Ali’s drawers and finds Jack’s watch.

Spoiler Discussion for the Guilt Trip : photo of a couple arguing

Rachel finds Noah on the terrace. He’s got binoculars and shows her Paige talking to Ali on the beach. This makes Rachel extremely nervous that Ali heard Rachel and Noah talking about their fling twenty years ago.

Later, Rachel asks Paige what she and Ali were talking about earlier that morning. Paige denies talking to Ali, then claims that she confronted Ali about what she was up to.

Rachel wants to talk to Ali but Paige discourages her.

Rachel and Jack are getting dressed for the wedding and he can’t find his watch. Rachel doesn’t tell him that she saw it in Ali’s room but offers to go look for it.

Jack leaves and she decides to look at the receipts in his wallet. She finds one for a silver heart from Tiffany & Co.

Ali texts Rachel for help with her dress and also asks Rachel to help her put on her silver Tiffany heart necklace.

The group heads to the wedding, at a remote cliffside restaurant located on a steep road.

After the service, Rachel meets an old friend of Ali’s. The friend talks about Ali’s mom’s accident, a car crash that left Ali’s mom in a wheelchair. The friend also reveals that Ali was once morbidly obese. Paige convinces the friend to show them old photos of Ali.

The wedding breakfast is on the terrace. During the toasts, Rachel runs to the restrooms. She’s upset that she didn’t stop the wedding, didn’t confront Jack and Ali. Paige follows her and tells her to just get through the rest of the wedding.

Spoiler Discussion for the Guilt Trip: Photo of an outdoor wedding reception at the beach

After the toasts, Jack heads out to smoke with Paige. Noah comes over and tells Rachel he wants Josh to take a paternity test. He says he if he is Josh’s father, he wouldn’t tell Josh or Paige, but he needs to know.

Ali leaves the restaurant, Jack follows her. Rachel goes after them. She finds them in a cave on the beach, arguing. Jack is threatening Ali.

Ali sees Rachel and tells Jack to confess to her, or she’ll do it for him .

Ali leaves and Jack says he kissed Ali one night when drunk and ever since that, she’s been stalking him. He got her fired by finding a fake job on her resume.Rachel asks Jack why he didn’t try to dissuade Will from marrying her, and he says he tried.

the trip ending

They return to the restaurant, where Rachel goes back to the ladies room. Ali and her friend are there. Ali apologizes to Rachel and it’s soon obvious that Jack didn’t tell Rachel the truth. Jack isn’t cheating with Ali. He’s cheating with Paige. Rachel accuses Ali of lying.

Rachel heads back out to the wedding and grabs the mike. She tells the group that Ali’s not who she seems. Jack grabs the mike away and Rachel tells Paige and Jack that Ali says they’re having an affair.

Rachel begins to believe that Ali is telling the truth. She and Noah start comparing notes. She notices Paige has a Tiffany heart bracelet.

Rachel talks to Ali who says she’s known about Paige and Jack for over a year and has been trying to get Jack to come clean. Ali found Jack’s watch after he and Paige had a liaison on the roof of the villa.

When Rachel and Ali join the group on the terrace to watch fireworks, they find out that someone shared the photo of fat Ali with the entire wedding.

Rachel suspects Paige and reflects the only reason she ended up with Jack because she was pregnant. Suddenly she sees a blinding light. It’s a car, coming right at Rachel and Ali at high speed. The car hits Rachel.

When she’s able to get up, Rachel sees that Jack is injured. Noah is all right. Ali is unconscious. Paige is missing .

In the Hospital After the Accident

Rachel wakes up in the hospital. The police want to know who she was with right before the accident. She says she was with Ali. That she didn’t know where Paige and Jack and Noah were, but she thinks Paige and Jack were outside.

photo of medical professionals wearing personal protective equipment

Noah comes back and says Paige is dead. The police say her body was found in the car.

Rachel worries that Paige might have heard Rachel and Ali discussing the fact that Noah could be Rachel and Jack’s son’s father.

Rachel tells the police that Paige and Jack were having an affair. The police say that someone else may have been in the car with Paige.

Rachel drifts off and wakes up to hear Jack telling the police that he was going to leave Rachel for Paige . He claims he was on the terrace and hit by the car.

Jack suggests Ali was in the car, and that she was jealous because he slept with her before Paige. Jack lies to the police, saying that Rachel was furious and violent after she found out about the affairs.

The police tell Jack they found his watch in the car.

Spoiler Discussion for The Guilt Trip: What Was the Ending?

Months after the wedding.

Rachel is attending a service for Ali.

the trip ending

Ali’s mom tearfully tells Rachel that Ali thought exposing the affair was the right thing to do.

Ali’s mom Maria fills in what happened at the wedding. Maria overheard Paige tell Jack that they were finished. Jack was furious, saying if he couldn’t have Paige, no one could.

Everyone assumes Paige and Jack both got in the car and he was the one who drove into the crowd.

Surprise: the service is not a funeral, but Ali’s re-do of her wedding to Will.

the trip ending

Ali suffered a brain injury in the accident but is doing well.

Rachel has started her teacher training.

Rachel tells Ali that Jack IS their son’s biological father (I think she’s lying.) We also learn that Ali (and perhaps her mom) testified against Jack, who was convicted of manslaughter.

Ali’s mom says that the fact that Jack’s watch was found in the car also helped get him convicted.

The Guilt Trip: Epilogue and Last Minute Plot Twist

The person narrating the epilogue says that before the accident, they saw Rachel put Jack’s watch into Paige’s bag. We will get to that below:

Spoiler Discussion for The Guilt Trip

What did you think of this one? I thought the twists and turns were fun, and that the misdirection about Jack’s affair being with Paige, not Ali, worked well.

But there was SO MUCH dialogue. That got a little tedious for me.

My questions about The Guilt Trip:

Who do you think the narrator of the epilogue in the guilt trip was.

My initial guess was Ali . That’s because I think the narrator refers to the conversation between Ali, Maria, and Rachel.

The narrator says “I wanted Rachel to tell me what I already knew. But just as she was about to, I realized it wasn’t important.” That “just as she was about to” had to refer to the conversation at the second wedding, where Ali says there is no other way Jack’s watch got into the car.

Also in that conversation, Ali looks at Rachel “ so intently that it feels as if she can see straight through her. Perhaps she can .”

To me, that means Ali knew what Rachel was about to tell her and stops her. Because she knows that Rachel put the watch in the bag and is telling Rachel that it doesn’t matter anymore.

However, Meredith in comments suggests Noah as a possible narrato r and I like that idea!

The arguments for Noah are 1) Noah and Rachel are closer and he would be more likely to expect Rachel to tell him the truth and 2) the narrator says “knowing Rachel as I know her” and Noah knows Rachel much better than Ali does.

I’m still going with Ali, but I think Meredith’s Noah guess is a good one. What do you think?

Who drove the car into the wedding party?

Thanks to Laurel-Manette for her excellent question in comments. Here is my answer (from the comments):

What we do know: The car ended up in the water. Paige’s body is found in the car (the police don’t say if she was in the driver’s seat or the passenger seat).

After the accident Rachel finds Jack lying on the terrace. The police say that Jack’s watch was in footwell of the car (presumably it fell out of Paige’s bag during the crash.)

No one seems to have seen the driver, and Paige is dead, so we can’t hear her side of the story.

Possibility #1: Paige was driving the car, either alone or with Jack in the car.

In this scenario, Paige overheard Rachel and Noah talking about how Noah could be Rachel’s son’s father and flew into a rage.

As Rachel says earlier about Paige, if someone is capable of sleeping with their best friend’s husband, they are capable of anything. In this scenario, Jack gets blamed because Rachel put his watch in Paige’s handbag as a way of saying “I know you are sleeping with my husband.” BUT was Jack in the car with Paige?

Paige could have told Jack what she’d overheard. Jack would have also been extremely upset and, in their hurry to leave the wedding together, maybe Paige (accidentally or on purpose) drove into the wedding party.

Possibility #2: Jack was the one who was driving, with Paige in the car.

Maybe Jack was the one who overheard the conversation between Rachel and Noah and was shocked and hurt to realize he might not be his son’s biological father.

So maybe, in a rage, he told Paige he wanted to leave and then (accidentally or on purpose) drove into the group. BUT: he was found on the terrace after the accident, not in the car.

When he’s questioned by the police, Jack suggests that maybe Ali was driving and jumped out of the car, which is an absurd theory.

But maybe Jack got the idea because that is what Jack did himself. When Rachel reaches Jack after the crash, he does seem badly hurt.

Could he have managed to jump out of the car before it flew into the water? I feel that’s sort of doubtful. At the end, Ali’s mom suggests to Rachel that Jack was driving, with Paige in the car.

BUT if Paige’s body had been found in the passenger seat, wouldn’t the police say that?

While I think Jack had a stronger motive to drive the car into the wedding party, I still think the evidence seems to suggest that Paige was driving the car alone , but I am curious to hear other people’s theories!

How did Jack get framed by his wife (and Ali) for causing Paige’s death?

The book suggests that Rachel put Jack’s watch in Paige’s bag as a way of telling Paige that she knew she slept with Rachel’s husband Jack.

Then when the police found Jack’s watch in the car, they assumed Jack was in the car with Paige. I’m assuming that Jack denied being in the car and claimed he was being framed, but Ali testified that Jack was a known liar, which got him convicted.

Other Questions:

Where does Paige (or Jack) get the car to drive onto the terrace? Noah, Rachel and Paige take a cab to the wedding. (Jack goes earlier with the bridal party.)

When Rachel is upset at the wedding, Paige offers to call her a taxi. Also if you were going to impulsively steal a car and run down someone with it, would your first thought be to grab your purse? Why? You don’t need car keys or a driver’s license.

Maybe this suggests that Paige and Jack just intended to leave the wedding, and the crash was an accident.

I didn’t understand the timeline of the wedding day. The group get up, shower and get dressed, and head to the wedding. After the ceremony, an announcer invites everyone to the “wedding breakfast.” But when Rachel follows Ali and Jack outside to the caves, Rachel says the sun is setting.

The accident clearly happens at night, because there are fireworks and Rachel sees the car’s headlights as it bears down on her. How long is this wedding, anyway? (Someone in comments pointed out that in the UK, “wedding breakfast” is used for any wedding meal. Thanks!)

Was the book suggesting that Jack IS Josh’s biological father?

Rachel tells Ali that yes, Josh did “lose” his father. To prison? This was a little vague for me, but I think Rachel means 1) Josh lost the only father he has ever known and 2) she’s not telling Josh the truth, which is that Noah is his father.

Was Jack trying to get caught cheating? Carrying around the receipt for Paige’s bracelet seemed odd.

Spoiler Discussion for The Guest List

I think it’s Noah telling the epilogue. That he saw Rachel put the watch in Paige’s bag. And as information comes to light (the affair) he keeps quiet to keep Rachel safe.

I think the timeline of the wedding is that it’s an all day affair. They are there long enough for low tide (the beach is visible) to high tide (which swallows the beach and then some).

As far as Josh losing his father – I interpret it to mean he lost the only father he has known (to prison). I don’t think Rachel would tell him that Noah was his father – even if they found it to be true.

Ooh interesting on the Noah narration. Going to go back and look. And yes I agree that I don’t think Rachel will tell Josh

But the narrator mentions the watch inscription which Ali knew but I doubt Noah would

Ooh great point. Thanks, LiliAnn!!

I don’t think it’s Noah because in the prologue the speaker wakes up in a hospital bed and is asked if they knew the deceased which noah was the one to identify the body so the police wouldn’t ask him that and also he wasn’t injured so he wasn’t in a hospital bed.

This sounds so dumb but I just finished it and I’m confused at who was driving the car?? If it wasn’t Jack, and Rachel put his watch in the car, does that mean rachel killed Paige? Help lol!

There are no dumb questions here! Also, the book doesn’t really give a definitive answer. Who was in the car, and who was driving??

What we do know: The car ended up in the water. Paige’s body is found in the car. Rachel finds Jack lying on the terrace. Jack’s watch was in the car (and presumably Paige’s bag, since the watch was in the bag.)

Possibility 1: Paige was driving the car. She overheard Rachel and her husband Noah talking about how Noah could be Rachel’s son’s father and flew into a rage. As Rachel says earlier about her, if she’s capable of sleeping with her best friend’s husband, she’s capable of anything. In this scenario, Jack gets blamed as well because Rachel put his watch in Paige’s bag as a way of saying “I know what you did.” BUT was Jack in the car with her? She could have told him what she’d overheard and they agreed to leave the wedding and then she (accidentally or on purpose) drove into the wedding party.

Scenario #2 Jack was the one who was driving, with Paige in the car. Maybe HE was the one who overheard the conversation between Rachel and Noah and was shocked and hurt to realize he might not be his son’s biological father. So maybe, in a rage, he drove into the group. When he’s questioned by the police, he even suggests that Ali was driving and got out of the car, which is perhaps what Jack did himself. When Rachel reaches him after the crash, he does seem badly hurt. But could he really have managed to get out of the car before it went into the water? At the end, Ali’s mom suggests that Jack was driving, with Paige in the car. But not sure why she says this.

My theory is still that Paige was alone in the car, but curious to hear other people’s theories!

Thank you! Super helpful!! Thanks for taking the time to write this all out! 🙂

No problem. And thanks for making me think about the possible driver in a different way. I wouldn’t have considered Dan except for your question 🙂

It’s a small part of one of your questions, but in England, a wedding reception is usually called the wedding breakfast even if it’s lunch or dinner.

Dale, thank you! I am an Anglophile but I did not know that 🙂

There are lots of lies and half truths.

Ali is lying. Her and Jack did sleep together and when Jack finished the affair to be with Paige he made sure Ali got the sack.

Ali wants to make out that Jack is a fibber so that she can claim they didn’t sleep together in order to protect her relationship with Will. That’s why she’s happy to give evidence that puts Jack into prison. Perhaps she only went out with Will in the first place to get back at Jack, but then fell properly in love.

Rachel is happy for Jack to go to prison because he lied about his affair with Ali and with Paige and who knows who else. He may or may not have been driving the car but she’s been manipulated so much who can say. It also leaves Rachel free to be with Noah who she realised she really loved when he nearly died.

I personally think Paige drove the car in a suicide mission because she knew that Rachel knows about the affair (from the watch Rachel put in her handbag) and can’t live with herself.

Paige realised that Rachel loves Noah too because of how she was when he nearly died and maybe the suicide was also her gift to Rachel to say sorry.

Hi Sally, Ooh, I love all your excellent observations. I agree with everything you said except maybe your theory about Paige. To me, Paige didn’t seem the slightest bit guilty about betraying her best friend. I think it’s definitely possible that after Paige overheard Rachel say that Paige’s husband Noah could be the father of Rachel’s son, she ran off in a blind fury and accidentally crashed the car. That, or she was furious at Noah and Rachel and meant to drive the car into them. I think she always resented Rachel and Noah’s closeness and slept with Jack as revenge.

It says the only one not hurt was Noah so I’m thinking Paige ended things with Jack because she realised she loved Noah after the surfing accident then after finding out about Rachel and Noah, tried to run Rachel down out of rage. She was a very fiery person. She specifically avoided Noah because she still loved him. Jack’s comment about if I can’t have you noone can was potentially just a spur of the moment comment or something he planned to act on in the future. She didn’t live long enough though.

That makes so much sense. She decided to re-dedicate herself to Noah and then after finding out about Noah possibly being Rachel’s son’s father and Rachel having a thing for Noah, she just lost it.

The one thing that made me question if the ridiculous story of Ali jumping out of the car might have happened was the fact that Ali’s mom was in a wheelchair from a car accident. Like I want to know did Ali also cause that car accident? Is that why they kept talking about how her mom ended up in a wheelchair?

After the surfing accident, Paige has sex with Jack in the rooftop hot tub so I don’t think she suddenly realizes how much she loves Noah.

I listened to the audiobook and it is Ali’s voice in the epilogue.

Very interesting! So what is your take on what happens in the car crash and why?

One of the most poorly written books I’ve ever had the displeasure of reading. And so frigging dumb!! I skipped over so many paragraphs of idiocy! Ridiculous that it gets such high praise.

Hi Mary, I hope you enjoy your next book more!

I just finished reading the book and I’m also a bit confused. Why didn’t the police mention whether Paige was in the driver’s or passenger’s seat.. that way she wont be a suspect if she is in the passenger’s seat (maybe I missed that part). Also could there be a chance that Noah was driving? And jumped out right before the car fell off? How could it be Ali if Ali was talking to Rachel while the incident happened. Also maybe Ali put the watch in Paige’s purse since she is the last one to have it.. I’m no investigator but the fact that Jack had facial injuries wouldn’t that suggest that there is a bigger chance that he flew out of a moving car and rolled around verses if he got hit by a car he would fall backwards? I’m reaching at this point haha! 🙂 I have too many questions but no answers!

Hi Hilda – I think a lot of us felt that way. The book ended, and then all our questions didn’t get answers! I think Paige got thrown from the car, so it couldn’t be proven where she was sitting. I’m going to have to review my notes before answering all the rest of the questions, so stay tuned!

Michael Winterbottom Explains the Startling Twist Ending of The Trip to Spain

the trip ending

Spoilers for the ending of The Trip to Spain below.

The audience that arrived at the Tribeca Film Festival for the debut screening of The Trip to Spain were expecting a charming, insightful, celebrity-impression-laden filmic journey through one of Europe’s great nations, and for the majority of the feature, that’s just what they got. Then came the final 60 seconds. The third installment in the Trip franchise concludes with a solo spinoff wander for Steve Coogan after co-star Rob Brydon heads back home to Britain, and it doesn’t go as planned.

Coogan ventures across the Mediterranean to North Africa, erstwhile land of the medieval Moors, a population whose praises Coogan sings earlier in the film. He goes on this final jaunt seeking fulfillment and, more important, adventure — he’s spent much of the flick talking about the pursuit of greatness, particularly the Spain-based greatness experienced by George Orwell and Miguel de Cervantes. However, the African trip goes awry: He gets stuck on a rural road without cell service or gas and, as he gazes in horror, he sees an oncoming truck filled with balaclava-wearing men yelling Allahu akbar. We end with a freeze-frame of his face, terror dawning upon it.

During the post-picture Q&A, director Michael Winterbottom fielded a question from a viewer who found that last moment a little offensive and stereotypical. In so many words, Winterbottom politely suggested that the questioner was missing the point:

It’s a tricky ending, I think. They talk quite a lot about Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, so it is like a version of that. And one of the aspects of that is Don Quixote is this idealist who sees things wrongly. He confuses everything. He sees thing in a wrong way. And there’s a comic gap between how he thinks of the world and how it hits. So there’s a running thing that Steve imagines he’s gonna write this cultural book about Spain. He wants to have a life of action. He admires George Orwell because he went off fighting and he thinks he would fight. He admires Cervantes because he went off fighting, was kidnapped, and so on. So he talks about how he imagines himself. And Rob’s thing is much more conventional about how he sees it. Steve is banging on about enlightened Islam and wanting to be a man of action and Rob’s a bit more conventional; just sees them as the bad guys and the good guys. So at the end, all those liberal ideas, all this belief that he wants to be a man of action and really experience life — and suddenly he’s in the desert in a Muslim country and he sees four guys arriving and suddenly, he’s panicking, thinking, Shit, I’m actually gonna have an experience.

However, no one found Coogan’s insanely good and insanely mocking Mick Jagger impression offensive, presumably because no members of the Jagger family were present.

How To Get Every Ending In Fallout 4

Every major fallout 4 faction, ranked, 10 harsh realities of playing fallout 4.

  • Fallout 4 's side quests offer a mix of lighthearted, serious, and downright weird adventures to keep players entertained.
  • From eerie environments to unsettling discoveries, these quests can leave a lasting impression on the Sole Survivor.
  • Whether exploring a strange wedding, meeting a ghoul child in a fridge, or uncovering a cannery's dark secrets, expect the unexpected in the Commonwealth.

While Fallout 4 's main story focuses on a missing child and the fate of the Commonwealth, the huge RPG also offers a plethora of faction-based and side quests to keep the Sole Survivor busy. While some of those will be lighthearted, there are many that tackle the more serious aspects of a post-apocalyptic world. And then there are some that are just plain weird or even spine-chilling.

While the Brotherhood of Steel might send the Sole Survivor to hunt down tech and the Minutemen need another settlement defended, there are some side quests in Fallout 4 that can leave a lasting impression for other reasons. From uncomfortable discoveries to eerie environments, there is no shortage of strange adventures in the Commonwealth . Whether it's because they were particularly creepy or left the Sole Survivor with head-scratching questions, these quests are worth playthrough at least once.

Fallout 4 has four different endings correlating to one of the four main factions; the Minutemen, the Brotherhood, the Railroad, or the Institute.

10 Visions In The Fog

Mind-bending trip through the fog of far harbor.

"Visions in the Fog" is part of the main questline for the excellent Fallout 4 DLC Far Harbor . The quest begins after speaking with Grand Zealot Richter, who will send the Sole Survivor to one of the Children of Atom's sacred sites . The aim is to drink irradiated water and go on a vision quest in order to join the odd faction. However, the relatively straightforward goal is not what makes this a weird quest.

"Visions in the Fog" is an unsettling quest to complete as the strange effect of the water twists the world and how it is perceived. Shapes warp and shift as the Sole Survivor travels through the landscape , giving a feeling of vulnerability in the altered state. The overall effect can feel overwhelming, as suddenly every shadow feels like a threat and actual enemies can easily get the drop on the character.

9 Wedding Day

True love conquers all.

Like all good RPGs, Fallout 4 includes its fair share of romance with plenty of the Sole Survivor's companions available for a cuddle to gain the Lover's Embrace perk. However, love isn't limited to just the main characters and with the quirky side quest " Wedding Day, " there is the opportunity to help some lovebirds tie the knot. What makes this a little more unusual is that while the groom is a middle-aged human teacher, the bride is a robot .

While chatting to the Miss Nanny Diamond City schoolhouse assistant, Miss Edna, the General Atomics classic may start asking about love and romance. Telling her that love is worth the risk and could happen to anyone will be enough to convince her to tell her colleague Mr. Zwicky how she feels . After that, if Diamond City is returned to after a few days, the Sole Survivor might be lucky enough to see the happy couple exchanging their vows with Pastor Clements.

8 Kid In A Fridge

Billy seems to alter established fallout ghoul lore.

From creepy and atmospheric to just plain weird and confusing, and one of the oddest Fallout 4 side quests that the Sole Survivor can stumble across. While exploring the area south of University Point, a voice can be heard coming from a fridge. Opening the battered kitchen appliance will reveal Billy, a ghoul child who claims to have been trapped inside for 200 years since the bombs fell. Billy wants to find his parents and will need to be escorted back to the family home just outside of Quincy, where, inexplicably, both his parents are still alive and also ghouls.

“Kid in a Fridge” is a somewhat lighthearted quest, but even within the Fallout universe, it makes no sense whatsoever. There are no answers in the game to how he survived for 200 years without food and water in an airtight container , and the more Billy is thought about and analyzed, the more questions arise, which makes "Kid in a Fridge" definitely one of the strangest quests to encounter.

7 The Devil’s Due

Who wouldn’t want to be trapped with a deathclaw.

For good old-fashioned scary weird, then "The Devil's Due" is a fantastic quest that can be picked up by overhearing gossip, usually from a guard in Diamond City. Located in the northeast of the Commonwealth, the Museum of Witchcraft is as spooky as it sounds, although not for the reasons one might expect . Outside will be the body of a Gunner and a holotape which will set the scene for this creepy quest.

It is once the Sole Survivor is inside that the fun really begins, with brilliant environmental storytelling and lots of triggered events . Growling can be heard while traveling through the building, with body parts occasionally dropping down to provide jump scares. Longtime Fallout fans will have already guessed who the culprit is long before the Deathclaw is revealed, but it is her reasons for being there that can add an extra level of tragedy to this chilling quest.

6 Mystery Meat

Perhaps better to be vegetarian in the wasteland.

Longneck Lukowski's Cannery is a factory located in the northeast of the Commonwealth, just a little south along the coast from Kingsport Lighthouse. Upon arriving there, the Sole Survivor will overhear an argument between the owner, Theodore, and a trader who is upset about her customers becoming ill after eating Theodore's meat and the quest "Mystery Meat" will begin. After she leaves, Theodore will hire the Sole Survivor to clear out some mole rats, but tells them not to go into the basement.

Of course, when entering the basement, the reason becomes clear, as Theodore has been using mole rats in his meat to increase profits. Further exploring, though, will reveal why "Mystery Meat" is such a weird quest because, on top of the mole rats, Theodore is also using feral ghoul flesh in his product . After his disgusting secret is exposed, Theodore will become hostile, with the only option to stop his vile business being to kill him.

If Theodore is approached during the fight, he will plead to be spared and offer to split the profits of the business with the Sole Survivor. Theodore will then continue selling ghoul meat, but the Sole Survivor can get some caps every few days for agreeing to this evil Fallout 4 deed .

There are some great factions in Fallout 4 with a mixture of new and returning groups for the Sole Survivor to meet and potentially join up with.

5 Human Error

Things are far too good to be true in covenant.

The settlement of Covenant is a curious place and strange all on its own without even delving into the quest "Human Error." Located not too far from Lexington, the walled-off village sits directly between Mystic Pines and Taffington Boathouse. When first arriving, the Sole Survivor will be asked to take a test to be allowed entry and any who have played Fallout 3 will recognize this as a modified G.O.A.T. from the beginning of the previous game.

Things only get stranger from there as the settlement has an eerie Stepford Wives feel, which is compounded when speaking with a caravan guard called Honest Dan who is looking for some missing traders. A thorough investigation will reveal that the town is a front for anti-synth conspiracists who have been kidnapping people to try to perfect a test to detect synths. From here, Covenant can either be sided with and the "testing" continues or the captives freed, resulting in the settlers becoming hostile.

4 Pickman’s Gift

Pickman’s art is not to everyone’s taste.

The Pickman Gallery can be visited either after speaking with Hancock and getting the short quest "Art Appreciation," or by exploring the area north of Boston close to the Cabot House and Old North Church. Inside, the works of a deranged mind are displayed along with several very angry raiders who are looking for the artist. It seems Pickman has been killing their friends to use in his art, which is a collection of unsettling paintings and sculptures.

Exploring the gallery gives insight into the strange world of this artist until he is eventually met in the tunnels beneath, under attack from raiders. If Pickman is aided, he can be spoken to and his sinister calmness is disturbing as the serial killer will thank the Sole Survivor and promise a reward. This reward is equally creepy, as Pickman's Blade will cause targets extra bleeding damage.

3 Brain Dead

A wacky murder mystery with fun pre-war characters.

"Brain Dead" is a strange and funny quest that can be picked up during the Far Harbor DLC when returning to Far Harbor after competing "Walk in the Park." Once back, a Miss Nanny named Pearl can be found asking for help in the settlement and following Captain Avery around. She will explain that there has been a murder and asks for the Sole Survivor to investigate at the Cliff's Edge Hotel.

Upon arriving, the Sole Survivor will be led into one of Fallout 4 's seven vaults , Vault 118, a luxury vault filled with affluent pre-war dwellers who are all now robobrains. What follows is a fantastically silly murder mystery with a great twist regarding the victim and murderer. With a great mix of humor, characters and a very different vault setting, "Brain Dead" is one of the best Far Harbor side quests for XP .

2 The Secret Of Cabot House

Learn the secret of the strange alien artifact.

"The Secret of Cabot House" is the final quest in the trio involving the mysterious Cabot family. The family lives in their pristine pre-war home in the northern area of Boston, just over the bridge from Bunker Hill, and will initially hire the Sole Survivor for seemingly odd jobs. However, as "The Secret of Cabot House" begins, they will be asked to accompany Jack Cabot to Parsons State Insane Asylum to prevent raiders from releasing the family patriarch.

The entire quest is packed with environmental storytelling as the true nature of the asylum and Jack's role in his father's imprisonment is unveiled. Things only get stranger when Lorenzo is met and the odd artifact is shown , with the Sole Survivor having to make a moral choice between father and son. "The Secret of Cabot House" is a wonderfully weird quest pulled straight out of Lovecraft, with hints of eldritch horrors or perhaps aliens behind Lorenzo's crown.

1 Dunwich Borers

Flashbacks of an eldritch god.

Although not technically a quest on its own, there are several side quests throughout Fallout 4 that will direct the Sole Survivor to Dunwich Borers, a quarry in the northeastern area of the Commonwealth, directly east of The Slog. At first, there is nothing remarkable about this quarry, with raiders who will attack on sight as the area is cleared. However, once the interior area of the site is entered, strange things will begin to happen .

The Sole Survivor will experience flashbacks to the pre-war quarry and hear odd rumbling and footsteps. The further into the area the Sole Survivor travels, the more disturbing the flashbacks become, including some rituals while gigantic statues look out from beneath the earth , all adding to the sense that something terrible happened here. Finally, an altar to the eldritch entity Ug-Qualtoth can be found, along with the unique machete Kremvh's Tooth, as the final stop on this disturbing Fallout 4 journey.

Bethesda's action RPG Fallout 4 puts players into the vault suit of the Lone Survivor, a pre-war soldier from an alternate future cryogenically frozen inside Vault 111. After their infant son is kidnapped, they venture out into the irradiated wasteland of the Commonwealth to scour the ruins of Boston for any sign of him. In doing so, they encounter various factions and companions and use an array of skills and abilities to navigate the apocalyptic remnants of society.

Meryl streep reveals her favorite love scene was with this hollywood legend, admits she ‘didn’t want it to end’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Meryl Streep reflected on her famous shampoo scene with Robert Redford in the 1985 movie “Out of Africa.”

In the epic romantic drama, Streep starred as a Danish baroness who falls in love with a big game hunter, played by Redford, while running a coffee plantation in colonial South Africa.

During a memorable scene from the film, Redford tenderly washes Streep’s hair by a river while reciting lines from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”

“It’s a sex scene in a way, because it’s so intimate,” the 74-year-old actress said during a Wednesday conversation at Cannes’ Théâtre Debussy,  per Variety.

“We’ve seen so many scenes of people f——, but we don’t see that loving touch, that care.”

While speaking at Cannes, Streep recalled that filming the scene initially wasn’t very pleasant.

According to the  UK Metro,  she told the crowd that she and Redford, now 87, were warned by the production to be wary of potentially dangerous wild animals nearby.

Meryl Streep recalled her famous shampoo scene with Robert Redford in "Out of Africa."

“We had lions, but they were imported from California and they were supposedly fine — tame. They were not,” the actress said, per the outlet.

“And the second thing we were told is the animal that kills the most people in Africa is the hippopotamus, if you get between the hippopotamus and the water,” she added.

“So we were shooting in the river and the hippopotamus were right above it. I don’t know if they show that in the movie, I can’t remember, but I was aware of it!”

Streep said that she didn't want the scene to end.

Streep recalled that Redford was worried about their safety and wasn’t washing her hair well at first.

“It wasn’t good,” she admitted.

However, Streep’s longtime hair stylist and makeup artist Roy Hellund jumped in and demonstrated how he typically washed the actress’s hair, which Streep described as “the best part of my day.”

“Redford took the lesson, and he just really got into it, and he was great,” Streep recalled. “By take five I was so in love!’

The actress and Redford played lovers in the 1985 epic romantic drama.

“I didn’t want it to end that day, even in spite of the hippos,” she added.

Directed by Sydney Pollack, “Out of Africa” was based on Karen Blixen’s 1937 autographical book of the same name.

The film was a box office hit and received 11 Academy Award nominations, including a best actress nod for Streep.

“Out of Africa” went on to take home seven Oscars, including best picture and best director for Pollack.

Streep said that her co-star is "very easy to talk to."

During a 1985 interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Streep praised Redford, telling the outlet that she found him “very charming.”

“We really got to know each other after he arrived in Africa,” she said.

“I developed this huge crush on him, which made it easier to do the love story. He’s really wonderful to work with.”

She continued, “He has an unusual quality for a man — he has a very receptive way about him and is an incredibly good listener. That’s an attribute people usually associate with women. So for women, he’s very easy to talk to.”

Never miss a story.

The two later teamed up again in the 2007 war thriller “Lions for Lambs,” which also starred Tom Cruise .

On Tuesday, Streep received a two-minute standing ovation when she was presented with an honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

During her conversation at the Théâtre Debussy, the three-time Academy Award winner shared how she had been touched by the warm reception at the Palme d’Or presentation.

“I felt just a wave of feeling coming from the audience, and it’s so much bigger than I thought — so many tiers of people, all the way up to the top,” she said.

“Yeah, it was a lot. I live a very quiet life, and really I don’t get any respect at home, so it’s sort of amazing to come into this arena and have that big tidal wave.”

Streep later said that she never set out to make movies that she thought would become box office hits.

“The ones that ended up being blockbusters — ‘Mamma Mia!’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ — happened when I was 58 and 60, and I never thought they were going to be anything but fun,” she said, according to the Hollywood Reporter .

“I didn’t know they were going to be big, but I knew that I could get them made.”

What is the ending in A Dusty Trip?

Image of Vignesh Raja

The core gameplay loop of A Dusty Trip is to repair your car, collect resources, and survive. This loop may initially sound attractive, but it becomes tedious after a while, making players wonder if there is an ending to A Dusty Trip.

Does A Dusty Trip have an ending?

Per the whispers on the internet and the discussions on the Discord channel , A Dusty Trip doesn't offer a clear-cut ending. Instead, you, the player, are forever trapped in the game's universe despite all your efforts to fight the NPC characters, collect resources, and survive the various events.

Currently, the maximum distance players have managed to travel is little beyond the 20,000M or 20 km mark, which also has a specific badge attached to it with the same name. Everyone crossing the prescribed mark either gets hit by a wave of zombies, is run over by a truck, or faces an alien abduction. Due to this programmed outcome, the general assumption is that the developers have yet to plan any particular ending and are still figuring out future updates plus the direction in which they want to proceed.

What is the Ultimate Engine in A Dusty Trip?

Ultimate Engine is a rumored item that will be available to players after finishing the end mission/quest in A Dusty Trip. As the name suggests, this engine could be the key to powering your car out of the desert area into the real world. Remember, this is just a rumor from Discord discussions. So, take the news with a pinch of salt. We'll have to wait for any announcements or leaks from the official developer's side to confirm the news. Once something is available, we will update the article with more leaks or rumors about the ending of A Dusty Trip.

Meghan Markle Shares Why She Wore a Red Dress in Nigeria, Ending Her Streak of Quiet Luxury Neutrals

The Orire design is a break from her usual personal style.

Meghan Markle wears a red dress with thin straps by Orire while onstage at a Women in Leadership panel

The moment Meghan Markle greeted an audience of fifty women in Nigerian politics, culture, and philanthropy for a Women in Leadership panel on Saturday, May 11, a shift in her Nigeria tour wardrobe was obvious. After sticking to a quiet luxury agenda in minimalist neutrals by Altuzarra , St. Agni, Heidi Merrick , and Johanna Ortiz throughout her packed schedule, Markle had instead opted for a bright red midi dress with a dramatic, sculptural hem.

The Duchess of Sussex explained her decision to wear a red dress by rising Nigerian designer Orire in her conversation with media executive Mo Abudu and World Trade Organization director-general Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. As it turns out, she was using color to get closer to her Nigerian heritage.

Meghan Markle spoke on the Women in Leadership Nigeria panel in a bright red dress by Orire, featuring a sculptural, wavy hemline.

According to reports by People and Hello , Markle responded to a question about uncovering her Nigerian lineage with a reference to her wardrobe choices for the trip. "It has been a whirlwind 24 hours since we arrived," Markle said, "and I very quickly got the memo that I need to wear more color so I can fit in with all of you in your incredible fashion!"

Markle also explained in detail what it was like discovering she is 43 percent Nigerian through a genealogy test and discussing the knowledge with her mother. "Being African-American, part of it is really not knowing so much about your lineage or background, where you come from specifically," Markle said. "And it was exciting for both of us to discover more and understand what that really means.”

Meghan Markle onstage at a Women in Leadership Nigeria panel

Onstage, Markle discussed discovering her Nigerian heritage and her experience so far visiting the country with Prince Harry.

Markle's red dress also shows her knack for studying the place she's traveling and choosing her designers accordingly. She embraced diplomatic dressing during her working royal style era , selecting clothing and accessories for official visits that had ties to the place she visited or the causes she promoted. Orire , who designed Saturday's red midi, is a women-led brand based in Lagos, Nigeria—a poignant choice for Markle's first visit. The brand plays with structure and texture through exaggerated ruffle details, and specializes in bright, energetic colors. (Its website also crashed following the news that Markle had worn one of its designs.)

Orire's pieces are available in the United States through Nordstrom , Free People , and Shopbop . Knowing how Markle will re-wear designers she really loves—like St. Agni and Heidi Merrick, two labels with repeat credits in her closet—she'll likely lean on this poignant brand again in the future.

Markle's first visit to Nigeria will conclude on Sunday, May 12, with another day full of meaningful activities and outfits.

Eileen Ending Explained: What’s Going On in Anne Hathaway’s New Thriller?

The noir thriller from director William Oldroyd ends with both shocks and ambiguity.

Editor's note: The following contains spoilers for Eileen.

The Big Picture

  • Eileen is a disturbing film about mistreated women seeking freedom.
  • The mysterious thriller keeps viewers on edge until a shocking climax.
  • The ambiguous ending raises questions about reality and character development.

Based on the novel of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh , who also co-wrote the script, Eileen is an effectively disturbing film, a powerful look at the lengths to which mistreated women will go to achieve freedom, justice, and happiness, featuring electrifying performances from stars Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway . Eileen is a mysterious thriller that keeps the viewer at the edge of their seat, until a truly wild climax that ends shockingly and ambiguously. So where does Eileen leave the title character Eileen Dunlop (McKenzie) and the rest of its cast?

A woman's friendship with a new co-worker at the prison facility where she works takes a sinister turn.

What is 'Eileen' About?

The film takes place in 1960s Massachusetts, where Eileen is living a lonely, sad existence. She endures harassment and bullying from co-workers at her job at a correctional facility for young men and verbal abuse from her alcoholic father, Jim ( Shea Whigham ), who constantly compares her unfavorably to her deceased mother and unseen older sister. When the glamorous Rebecca Saint John ( Hathaway ) replaces the prison’s psychologist, Eileen is immediately enamored with the older woman. Rebecca befriends Eileen, further dazzling her with her confident, powerful attitude and unique worldview.

Rebecca is determined to make the prison more humane and take a more active approach to helping inmates with mental health struggles. She becomes especially passionate about helping Lee Polk ( Sam Nivola ), a young man who hacked his father to death, for whom Eileen seems to harbor a romantic and/or sexual fixation. Rebecca is convinced that the horrifically violent nature of the murder suggests that the father must have harmed Lee in a significant way. One day, Eileen observes as Rebecca moderates a visit between Lee and his mother, Rita ( Marin Ireland ), which ends with Rita rushing out of the prison in tears.

Eileen and Rebecca at the Polk Residence

On Christmas Eve, Eileen is delighted to accept an invitation from Rebecca to spend the holiday with her at her home. They have an odd dinner, with Rebecca serving Eileen pickles and cheese, which is all she has in her kitchen. Despite this, Eileen is clearly thrilled to be there. After they continue to bond over drinks for a little while, however, Rebecca shocks Eileen (and viewers who didn’t read the book) by revealing that the house isn’t hers: it’s the Polks’ and that she is holding Rita captive in the basement. Eileen is at first reasonably frightened and goes to leave, but Rebecca stops her.

'Eileen' Review: Anne Hathaway & Thomasin McKenzie Star in Romance-Mystery That Defies Expectations

Rebecca explains that she had come to the house to confront Rita with her suspicions that Lee’s father abused him, which she believed Rita may have been involved in as well. Their conversation devolved into a physical fight, during which they both fell into the basement, incapacitating Rita, who Rebecca then tied up and drugged. Rebecca asks Eileen to stay and serve as a witness while she forces Rita to confess to her complicity. In addition to being frightened, Eileen is initially hurt that Rebecca’s invitation hadn’t been a genuine act of affection. But when Rebecca pleads with her that she needs the support of a friend, Eileen’s burgeoning romantic and obsessive feelings for her—as well as her own darker impulses—win out, and she agrees to help, even getting her father’s gun out of her car to threaten Rita with.

How Does 'Eileen' End?

The pair descend into the basement, where Rebecca pressures Rita to confess while Eileen holds the gun pointed at her. Rita is at first defiant, rebuking them and threatening them with the consequences of abducting her. But after Eileen makes a surprisingly convincing threat to kill her, she eventually breaks down. She tearfully admits that her husband sexually abused Lee over a long period and that she knew he was doing so. Initially, she had been so horrified that she couldn’t make herself admit the abuse was real by reporting it, but she also admitted that she continued to keep quiet because she began to believe that it was improving her and her husband’s marriage. As she finishes the story, Eileen suddenly shoots her in the chest, with the disturbingly simple justification that, “I got upset.”

Despite having been the one to initiate the abduction and interrogation, Rebecca is horrified and begins making meager attempts at giving Rita medical attention. But E ileen urges her to stop, believing that Rita deserves to die, and telling Rebecca she loves her. She says that they could get away with killing her by framing her father and run away to live together. Jim has repeatedly been in trouble with the police for drunkenly brandishing his gun and pointing it at neighbors, so much so that an officer had Eileen take custody of the gun. Jim also worked on Lee’s case when he was on the police force, making him the perfect patsy. Rebecca agrees, and they force-feed Rita tranquilizers to knock her out.

Eileen and Rebecca put Rita in Eileen’s car and agree to meet at her house, where they will stage a scene to make Jim look guilty. But Rebecca never comes. Eileen waits for her until early in the morning, when she drives the car deep into the woods and leaves Rita in it with the windows up so the smoky exhaust the old car constantly emits will kill her. Eileen then walks back to the road and hitches a ride on a passing truck that is driving out of town, likely to fulfill her long-standing dream of going to New York City.

What Does the Ending of 'Eileen' Mean for the Characters?

The ending, which excludes some final scenes from the novel set significantly later , maintains and increases the mysterious ambiguity that makes Eileen , both the character and the film, so interesting, and raises many new questions. In addition to her surprising initial reaction to the shooting, Rebecca not meeting Eileen makes the viewers reconsider a lot of what they thought they knew about the character. Some viewers may even consider the idea that Rebecca wasn’t actually a real person, but a figment of Eileen’s imagination, an interpretation of the novel Moshfegh seems to support, having told The Guardian , “Rebecca was somebody else’s character, a character from a movie or book read long ago. She is an imaginary person in another sense too in that Eileen has imagined her.” Even if one thinks she is real, her reaction to the shooting and choosing not to join Eileen show that she is arguably more moral and less disturbed than Eileen , when the earlier parts of the film led one to believe the opposite.

Eileen’s final expression is also thought-provoking. In the final scene, as the truck drives, she smiles to herself, leaving the viewer to wonder why she would do so. While it makes sense that she would be relieved to get away with the murder, and likely also happy to be free of her father and her dreary hometown, she is once again as alone as she was before Rebecca came into her life . This could be argued to lend further support to the idea of Rebecca being imaginary. If that’s the case, perhaps Eileen’s mind subconsciously created Rebecca to develop her confidence and agency. Now that she believes she has done so by killing Rita and leaving, Rebecca is no longer needed.

From this point of view, the smile would be seen as evidence of Eileen realizing she has become more powerful and taken control of her life, no longer needing her imaginary alter-ego. If Rebecca was real, the smile is a little more confounding, as one would assume that Eileen would still be fairly hurt that the woman she loved didn’t come with her. If she is smiling despite that, the film’s argument may be that her freeing herself from her oppressive life was more important than her starting a romance with Rebecca. McKenzie’s performance throughout the film is excellent, but her work is especially striking in this scene, as she delivers the smile in a way that allows different viewers to read it as suggesting many different meanings .

Eileen is now available to watch on Hulu in the U.S.
