Tour de France 2022 Route stage 18: Lourdes - Hautacam

The riders clip into their pedals near the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes and leave the pilgrimage site behind to enter the Pyrenees. On virtually flat roads the route travels to Laruns and after 60 kilometres in the saddle the climbing begins.

The Col d’Aubisque is a climb of 16.4 kilometres at 7.1% before the riders descend via the Col du Soulor to Ferrières. That’s the base of the Col de Spandelles, which is a 10.3 kilometres climb at 8.3%.

A long descent leads to Argelès-Gazost, and that’s the base of the finish climb.

The ascent to ski resort Hautacam is a scenic one-way climb. The length is 13.6 kilometres and the average gradient sits at 7.8%. The second half is the hardest part with kilometres 8, 9 and 11 standing out – respectively with gradients at 10.3%, 11.3%, and 10.4%.

It’s the sixth time the Hautacam ascent is included in the Tour de France. Luc Leblanc won in 1994, Bjarne Riis in 1996 , Javier Otxoa in 2000, Juan José Cobo in 2008, and in 2014 Vincenzo Nibali took the win. With the exception of Otxoa and Nibali all these riders were affiliated with doping at some point in their career.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

After a long, tiresome day of racing, stage 18 of the 2023 Tour de France completed on July 20 in Bourg-En-Bresse, France. 

Kasper Asgreen , the Danish cyclist who rides for the UCI WorldTeam Soudal–Quick-Step, emerged as the winner of the stage. This was his first stage win of the 2023 Tour de France and he is now ranked 87th in the Tour de France current standings.

Jasper Philipsen FORCES RIVAL TO ROADSIDE In Stage 18 Of The Tour de France 2023

The Tour de France leader, Jonas Vingegaard , has been wearing the yellow jersey since stage 6. He rides for Jumbo Visma, and his teammate, Sepp Kuss ,  follows him in the 9th place for the Tour de France general standings.

And breathe. After a wild two days in the Alps, the sprinters come to the fore again on Stage 18 at the Tour de France. Jonas Vingegaard need only stay upright on the remaining four stages and he will surely win a second yellow jersey, with the Dane holding a 7'35 lead over Tadej Pogacar in the general classification. Bonjour and welcome to the Cyclingnews live coverage of stage 18 of the 2023 Tour de France.

The riders are signing on in Moûtiers for the rolling 184km ride to Bourg-en-Bresse. 

The sun is out for what should be a fast ride north out of the Alps. 

The stage suits the sprinters but it'll be fascinating to see if they can control the  breakaway attempts.

This is the profile of the stage.

Tadej Pogacar has signed on and confirmed he is ready to race on.

"It was brutal,” he said of his suffering on the Col de la Loze. 

“It was hard but I have to thank my team, they pushed me to finish, especially Marc Soler, he saved the podium for me. It was super hard but I’m still here, still standing so we keep fighting to the end.”

We're five minutes from the roll out from Moûtiers. 

The riders head to Albertville and then Chambery as they leave the Alps before heading northwest via the Ain region for the finish in  Bourg-en-Bresse.

Vingegaard lines up on the front of the start grid in fresh yellow. He has lost teammate Wout Van Aert, who has headed home to be with his wife, who is about to give birth, but now leds Pogacar buy 7:35. 

He has to stay safe, stay healthy and focus on riding to Paris on Sunday.  

Wout Van Aert announced he would not start stage 18 of the  Tour de France  on Thursday and he has headed back to Belgium to be with his wife Sarah, who is due to give birth to their second child shortly.

In a video put out by the team on  Twitter , Van Aert said: “As everyone knows Sarah is pregnant. In consultation with the team, we have decided that my place is at home. We have been seeing the doctor at home and he has assessed that labour is imminent.”

Wout Van Aert leaves Tour de France ahead of birth of second child

Bang on schedule, the riders roll out from the start. 

They face a long 16.2km neutralised section before the flag drops and the stage officially starts.  

Riders are usually packed tight behind the red race director's car but everyone seems tired today after the huge effort of stage 17.  

Still 6km to ride in the neutralised sector. 

The riders are enjoying this roll out but someone will surely attack.  

Only nine of the 22 teams in the Tour de France have won a stage so there will be a big fight to make the breakaway and motivation to make it stick from teams who have missed out so far, in particular Soudal-Quickstep who lost sprinter Fabio Jakobsen to a crash on stage 12.

The sprinters' teams will likely take over the chase with the flat finale in the capital of the Ain department, where  Jasper Philipsen  will hope to take his fifth stage and add to his tally in the points classification.

Philipsen holds a massive lead of 137 points over Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and is unlikely to be overtaken unless disaster strikes before the final stage in Paris.

Jumbo-Visma will have to control the peloton in the first half of the stage but they will be happy for a break to go and help from the sprinters' teams. 

After Vingegaard's triumphant two stages with a dominant time trial and even more commanding performance on the  Col de la Loze  he'll relish a quiet day of sitting in the peloton.

1.5km to the start reel. The riders are packed tight now, so we expected attacks. 

Interestingly, Giulio Ciccone is up front. He will want to get into the break to score the few KOM points on offer on the two Cat 4 climbs. 

He needs every point before Saturday's final mountain stage. Cicco has 88 points, Felix Gall has 82 and Vingegaard has 81.

Asgreen is the first to surge clear. Two riders join him. 

He is joined by Victor Campenaerts and Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X). 

They are going away as some in the peloton try to block the road. 

The gap is up to 35 seconds.

Will anyone try to jump across? 

Of course they will. 

TotalEnergies try to spark a move. 

The peloton have locked down the counter attacks. 

The gap is up to 1:40.

The three up the road are Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep), Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny).

Jayco, DSM and Alpecin are ready to lead the peloton and so keep the break in check.

The peloton has pegged the three attacks to 1:30.

It's 29C out on the road and so the Vittel moto comes up to feed the three riders in the break.

Their team cars have been sent up but the gap is dropping, so we could soon see sa change in the race scenario.  

The pace is high but steady, the peloton is lined out but a lot of riders seem happy to stay in the slipstream after the fatigue of yesterday. 

The gap to the break continues to fall. 

The three seem to have lost the desire to go on the attack.  

The attackers are pushing big gears but their lead is down to 1:00 and so the team cars are pulled-out.

Jasper Philipsen has beren back to his team car and seems calm and collected for the stage.

The riders are racing across the valley road on pan flat roads. 

A few riders have stopped for natural break but the gap remains at 1:00. 

The peloton is keeping the break on a short lease today.

The calm in the stage allows us to catch-up with the latest news and look back at the anarchy of stage 17. It truly was anarchy in the Alps.  

Wout Van Aert did not start stage 18 and headed back to Belgium to be with his wife Sarah, who is due to give birth to their second child shortly.

The news was confirmed by a Jumbo-Visma Tweet on Thursday morning prior to the largely flat stage from Moutiers to Bourg-en-Bresse.

Van Aert is the first  Jumbo-Visma  rider to leave the Tour this year. He leaves the race at a point where leader  Jonas Vingegaard is in a very strong position  overall, dominating the race after the time trial stage and the Queen stage over the  Col  de la Loze. 

A lot happened yesterday. 

Pello Bilbao  did not win the stage but was in the attack. However he was warned by the UCI commissaires after punching a spectator while racing up the Col de la Loze on stage 17.

The Bahrain Victorious rider was caught on camera hitting out at a fan with his right hand as he raced towards the summit of the Tour's highest peak along with Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla) and  David Gaudu  (Groupama-FDJ).

A fan was running alongside Harper, just in front of Bilbao, as the breakaway trio battled their way up the final 3km of the HC-rated climb inside the final 10km of the stage, leaving the Basque rider with no space to move into. As he sought to move past Harper, he swiped out at the fan before racing on.

The break rolls on, 1:10 ahead of the peloton. 

Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep), Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) are playing cat and mouse with each other.  

Both groups are riding but also easing off, to save their legs. Yet the average speed for the first hour is  43.8km/h.  

Behind, DSM, Jayco and are leading the chase.

Behind them the big GC teams are lined out behind in formation, protecting each other.

A sign of how controlled the stage is?

We can also see Tadej Pogacar in the peloton. 

He has bandages on his right shin and right elbow after his fall yesterday. However he said it had little to do with his terrible day. 

8km or so from the top of the Col de la Loze, where the gradient stiffened towards 9%,  Tadej Pogačar made his admission of defeat .

"I'm gone, I'm dead," Pogačar told his UAE Team Emirates. 

Guided by UAE Team Emirates teammate Marc Soler,  Pogačar endeavoured to limit the gap , but he was still nearly six minutes down at the line. 

His podium position remains secure for now but the widening of the GC gap between himself and Jonas Vingegaard has gone from 10 seconds on Monday to a daunting 1:48 on Tuesday, then to a staggering 7:35 by Wednesday evening.

UAE and Pogačar were seemingly at a loss to explain what had gone so badly wrong on the Loze.

“I don’t know what happened,” Pogačar said afterwards. 

“I tried to eat as much as possible but it was like nothing would go into my legs, everything stayed in my stomach. I was feeling so empty after three and a half hours. If I didn’t have such great support around me, I was thinking I could lose the podium today."

The echoes of Pogačar’s sudden loss of power on the Col du Granon in the 2022 Tour, which also cost him the race against Vingegaard, were unmistakable. But the Slovenian said what happened 12 months ago, when he lost just under three minutes to the Dane on the Granon rather than nearly double that on Wednesday at Courchevel, was far less serious.

“Even the stage to the Granon was better,” Pogačar said. “Today was one of the worst days of my life on the bike."

Back to today's stage, the break passes the summit of the Côte de Chambéry-le-Haut climb. 

It's only 1.6km long at 4.3% but hurts Simon Geschke (Cofidis), who was suffering yesterday and finished just a few seconds inside the time cut.

Currently 1:05 between the three-man break and the peloton.

Abrahamsen led the break across the top of the climb – no impact on the polka dot jersey, obviously.

A point for the Norwegian at the top, his second KOM point of the Tour.

A look at the three men out front today.

dsm-firmenich, Jayco-AlUla, Alpecin-Deceuninck all lined up at the head of the peloton.

Simon Geschke reportedly back in the peloton now after dropping on that climb. He battling on through the Tour – hopefully he makes it Paris.

The break losing some time as they head uphill on an unclassified climb. 50 seconds now.

A tight leash for the breakaway men – the sprint squads want to be certain of a bunch finish in Bourg-en-Bresse today.

There's a very long way to go so surely the peloton will let the gap go out a little more again. They don't want to make the catch a long way out and risk counter-attacks.

28km to go until the day's second and final climb, the fourth-category Côte de Boissieu.

Still all calm in the race as the riders edge towards the 100km to go mark.

A 42kph average speed as the break passes the milestone.

The gap to the break steady at just under a minute currently.

No stresses for this man, race leader Jonas Vingegaard, today after a very intense couple of days of racing. His team not having to work, either, with no interest in a sprint.

Asgreen, Campenaerts, Abrahamsen continue on at 55 seconds up. It doesn't look like they'll get any more leeway as the Norwegian drops back to his team car for some refreshments.

The riders climb the Côte de Boissieu, the second categorised climb of the stage.  

Suddenly the race comes alive! 

Two Lotto Dstny riders are trying to go across to the attack. 

Now Anthony Turgis tries a move. 

The Alpecin team is trying to control things for Philipsen but the speed is high and the climb is hurting lots of legs.

Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep), Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) are still clear at the summit. 

Behind Philipsen tries to bully rival Pascal Eenkhoorn from attacking. 

That's not nice or sporting from Philipsen.

I'm sure the VAR Video Assist Referee will look at that closely. 

The gap to the trio is 45 seconds but the attacks keep coming from the peloton.

Lotto are attacking again and again. They don't like the status quo.

Sadly Simon Geschke has abandoned the Tour due to sickness.

He suffered to finish inside the time zone yesterday and was struggling today despite the steady pace. 

This is the Philipsen move on Eenkhoorn. Not nice.

Eenkhoorn goes again. This time he's alone, so nobody can cut him up as he tries to go across to the break. 

Other riders are also jumping from the peloton.

Jayco and Alpecin are leading the peloton.

DSM are also keen to help the chase. They're hoping Sam Welsford can have a clear run in the sprint and land a win. 

There is an attack in the attack. Campenaerts dropped back to help Eenkhoorn come across but took a while to get to Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep), Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X)

The peloton is still chasing hard but the gap is up to 45 seconds.

This stage could a game of chase all the way to the finish.

The break surges through the intermediate sprint, with Jonas Abrahamsen winning it ahead of Eenkhoorn.

Behind the peloton is not overly aggressive and Philipsen wins the sprint for fifth place.  

Philipsen scored 11 points there and so extended his total to 334. 

Bryan Coquard is second with 188 points and Mads Pedersen is third with 186. 

Philipsen and Alpecin have dominated the green jersey compeition thanks to their four stage wins. Will they take a fifth in 47km?  

This was the break before Eenkhoorn joined the break. 

The peloton is chasing hard but stay in control, despite a headwind.

The rider on the front of the peloton is putting big watss to fight the constant headwind, while everyone else can sit on the wheels.   

This is the map of the finish. It shows the final five kilometres from the top-right. 

The late left corner and then the sweeping bend inside the final kilometre will be vital.

The final 750 metres are on a straight road that is only 6.50 metres wide. 

That will allow riders to come from behind but as always, positioning and a clean run to the line will be vital.

Victor Campenaerts is giving it big licks in the break to keep the quartet clear.

They lead by 45 seconds. Surely the peloton won't mess up and let them get away. 

Indeed Lidl-Trek have moved up and are helping the chase. 

The speed is up as the sprint teams gather up near the front. 

There hasn't been a big, high-speed bunch sprint for eight days and none of the sprint teams want to miss a chance to win.

The winds will be a factor today, it is stronger in the final kilometres on some of the exposed fields of central France.

Meanwhile the GC riders and yellow jersey Jonas Vingegaard are staying protected on the wheels in the centre of the pack. 

They just have to hope there are on late punctures or late crashes between now and kilometre -3, when riders are given the same time as the group they were in, if there's a problem. 

Victor Campenaerts is tucking low and going deep whenever he is on the front. 

He's a worry to the sprint teams behind. 

The gap is still 45 seconds.

There is a slight climb very soon and that will help the peloton with the chase.

Lidl-Trek, Alpecin and Jayco continue to work on the front but teams are also playing games, none of the sprint teams want to put their lead out train on the front too early. 

That could help the break. This will be close, very close.

Julian Alaphilippe has moved up to the front, to perhaps try to slow the chase. 

Will any of the sprint domestiques tell him to get out of the way? 

For now Philipsen, his lead out Mathieu van der Poel are sat deep in the peloton. 

The gap is still 30 seconds. Not much but perhaps enough. 

As we mentioned Jumbo-Visma have moved near the front to protect Vingegaard in the final kilometres.

Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep), Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X), Victor Campenaerts  and Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto-Dstny) lead by 30 seconds but they're losing seconds with each kilometre.  

They have a slight downhill to help them now as the sprint teams still hold off a little. 

Victor Campenaerts has been awarded  the Prix de la Combativité but is riding so that Lotto Dstny can win the stage.  

The gap is down to 23 seconds. 

It's still 23 seconds as some of the sprint teams run out if chase riders.

Alaphilippe and Tim Declercq are at the front, letting Mattias Skjelmose stay on the front.

The four attackers still lead by 24 seconds.

The sprint teams will soon have to make big decisions and sacrifice some lead out riders.

Intermarche move up for Girmay. Jayco have also committed a fresh rider. 

The riders climb a rise but the gap is still 22 seconds.

My oh my, this will be close.

Up front the four continue to work together and drive to the finish, they know there is no chance for solo attacks until the very end.

Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep), Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X), Victor Campenaerts  and Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto-Dstny) are selling their skins dearly today. 

They could even still break the sprinter's hearts.  

The four lead by 12 seconds.

Nils Politt is on the front for Bora, putting down high watts at speed. 

This could make the difference.

Jumbo are lined-out behind Politt but they surely won't chase hard to keep Vingegaard safe. 

Just 10 seconds now. 

There are some roundabouts and turns coming up. 

Now the sprinters need to move up.

Bahrain also hit the front. 

The peloton can see them but not yet catch the four.

Cornering speed will be decisive. The four could get in the way of the sprint.

Here we go!

They're going to stay away! 

Campenaerts lead it out.

Here they come! 

They do it! Asgreen wins the stage from the break!

That's a big win for Soudal and for the break. 

A lesson in bike racing, that you should never give up.

Asgreen celebrates with his Soudal teammates and slumps to the ground after his huge effort.

The breakaway stayed clear by less than ten metres!

Campenaerts made one last long pull and that perhaps mde the difference.

This is the winning shot. The sprinters are all behind him. 

Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto-Dstny) was second and Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X). third. 

Campenaerts was swept up by the sprinters but even put himself in the traffic to disrupt them slightly. 

Philipsen won the bunch sprint but only for fourth place.

Asgreen let out a roar when he won.

Asgreen has won the Tour of flanders but this is his first Tour de France win.

Kasper Asgreen was emotional after his win.

"I really couldn't have done it without Pascal, Victor and Jonas," he said sportingly.  

"They all did amazing out there. We all deserved to win with the work we put out there. I'm really happy to come away with the win.

"It means so much - with the period I had the last year with my crash in the Tour de Suisse and having to leave the Tour de France last year. I've come a long way." 

Asgreen was not sure if the attack would stay away but committed to it. 

"Obviously the situation was not ideal. I would have preferred to have gone with six, seven or eight (riders) but it's also the last week of the Tour and we're coming off some really hard weeks," he explained. 

"We've seen it before that even a small group can manage to cheat the sprinters' teams. I didn't rule it out. It was a team time trial to the finish."

Asgreen dedicated his win to a special friend.

"I want to dedicate it to all the people who helped me throughout the last year. I would also like to dedicate it to Dries (Devenyns)," he said of his Soudal teammate who recently announced he will retire at the end of the season. 

"It's his last Tour in his last season. He was really emotional, so I would like to dedicate it to him, his wife and his family and all the people who helped me in the last year."

There is no reaction from the sprint teams yet. They and their DS will not be happy, they let  chance of victory slip their grasp.

They have been under pressure after Fabio Jakobsen crashed and abandoned and Julian Alaphilippe struggled but the big Dane pulled it off.

Tour de France: Däne Asgreen gewinnt 18. Etappe in Frankreich

Der Däne Kasper Asgreen hat die 18. Etappe der 110. Tour de France gewonnen. Der 28-Jährige gewann am Donnerstag nach 184,9 Kilometern zwischen Moûtiers und Bourg-en-Bresse den Sprint einer Ausreißergruppe vor dem Niederländer Pascal Eenkhoorn und dem Norweger Jonas Abrahamsen. Die Sprinter um Superstar Jasper Philipsen folgten direkt hinter der Gruppe, konnten die Lücke aber nicht mehr schließen.

An der Spitze der Gesamtwertung änderte sich wie erwartet nichts. Der dänische Titelverteidiger Jonas Vingegaard gönnte sich nach seiner dominanten Show in den Alpen einen ruhigen Tag und kam mit dem Hauptfeld ins Ziel. Er liegt weiter 7:35 Minuten vor seinem Rivalen Tadej Pogacar. Der Tour-Sieg ist Vingegaard bei drei verbleibenden Etappen bis Paris wohl nur noch durch einen Sturz zu nehmen.

Der entkräftete Simon Geschke gab unterdessen 73 Kilometer vor dem Ziel zum ersten Mal bei einer Tour de France auf. Damit sind nur noch fünf deutsche Fahrer im Rennen, nachdem am Mittwoch schon Sprinter Phil Bauhaus entkräftet aufgeben hatte. Der völlig erledigte Geschke hockte am bitteren Ende seiner Höllentour längst betrübt im Teamauto, als Ausreißer Asgreen den versammelten Sprintstars die Show stahl.

„Ich konnte einfach nichts mehr essen. Die ersten beiden Stunden ging es noch. Kleinigkeiten mit dem Magen reichen in der dritten Woche schon. In der dritten Stunde habe ich dann gemerkt, dass es mir komplett den Stecker zieht“, sagte Geschke und fügte hinzu: „Ich war am Berg der vierten Kategorie allein. Nochmal 80 km allein, vor allem nach dem Tag gestern, wo ich komplett leer war, da hatte ich einfach keine Reserven mehr.“

Die Strapazen des Vortages, als er sich auf der Königsetappe mit allerletzter Kraft vor dem Besenwagen ins Ziel gequält hatte, merkte man ihm deutlich an: „Wenn es gar nicht geht, muss ich aussteigen“. 73 Kilometer vor dem Tagesziel ging dann gar nichts mehr: Der Mann mit dem markanten Bart rollte mit hängendem Kopf dem Feld hinterher, stoppte und stieg ins Teamfahrzeug. Seit 2009 hatte er zuvor zehnmal die Tour bestritten und stets das Ziel in Paris erreicht, beim verflixten elften Mal riss die Serie.

Nach der Vorentscheidung plant Vingegaards Heimatort Glyngöre die große Party: „Breaking News! Die Feier von Jonas Vingegaard in Glyngöre findet am Donnerstag, 27.7.23, statt! Programm folgt später!“, hieß es am Donnerstag in einer Facebook-Gruppe der jütländischen Ortschaft. Vingegaards Kollege Wout van Aert ging nicht mehr an den Start. Er verließ die Rundfahrt vor dem 18. Teilstück, seine Frau Sarah erwartet das zweite Kind .

Am Freitag hoffen die Ausreißer bei der 19. Etappe auf ihre letzte Chance. Für die Radprofis geht es im Jura-Gebirge auf die hügeligen 172,8 Kilometer zwischen Moirans-en-Montagne und Poligny. Am Samstag steht noch eine anspruchsvolle Gebirgsetappe in den Vogesen an, einen Tag später endet die Frankreich-Rundfahrt in Paris.

De eindstreep van de Tour ligt normaal gesproken op de Champs-Elysees in Parijs. In 2024 finishen de renners in Nice langs de Côte d'Azure. Dit omdat Parijs deze zomer in het teken van de Olympische Spelen staat.

Waar begint de Tour de France 2024?

De Tour de France 2024 start in de stad van de Medici. De hoofdstad van de Renaissance en tevens de hoofdstad van Toscane. Florence zal het adembenemende decor vormen voor de start van een hele bijzondere Tour. De Tourkaravaan zal drie dagen op Italiaans grondgebied vertoeven, alvorens de grens naar Frankrijk weer over te trekken. Of de renners ook over de beroemde Ponte Vecchio zullen fietsen is nog een vraag maar dat Florence prachtige plaatjes zal opleveren staat vast.

Hoeveel geld krijgt de winnaar van de Tour de France?

De winnaar van de Tour de France ontvangt € 500.000 euro aan prijzengeld. Als je een etappe wint krijg je € 11.000 euro, de winnaar van de groen trui en bolletjestrui ontvangen beide € 25.000. Terwijl de winnaar van het jongerenklassement € 20.000 mag bijschrijven. Let wel op, per ploeg zijn er afspraken over de verdeling van het prijzengeld. Meestal wordt het onder de deelnemende renners verdeeld en een percentage gaat naar de staf.

Wat is de tijdslimiet in de Tour de France?

Tijdens de Tour de France moeten renners maken dat ze op tijd binnen komen. Ze mogen er niet zo lang over doen als ze willen. Dit om ervoor te zorgen dat alle renners de nodige inspanningen doen die horen bij een touretappe. De organisatie van de Tour de France heeft alle etappes ingedeeld in 6 categorieën. Per categorie wordt in een tabel aangegeven hoeveel de tijdslimiet is. Hoe sneller er gereden wordt, des te ruimer de tijdslimiet is, tot een maximum van 25%. Wie zijn de deelnemers aan de Tour de France 2024?

Ondertussen staan er al behoorlijk wat namen op de voorlopige startlijst. Zo heeft wereldkampioen Mathieu van der Poel zijn deelname al bevestigd. Ook sprinters Jasper Philipsen en Mads Pedersen staan op de voorlopige startlijst. We weten ook dat Remco Evenepoel een doel heeft gemaakt van de Tour. Biniam Girmay viel uit in de Giro en zal er alles aan doen om revanche te nemen in de Tour. Gaan we het debuut van Arnaud de Lie zien? En kan Mark Cavendish het onmogelijke doen?

Wie zijn de favorieten voor de Tour de France 2024?

We schrijven alvast de namen op van Tadej Pogacar en Remco Evenepoel. Pogacar wil dit jaar voor de dubbel Giro-Tour gaan en Remco hoopt zes te gooien als het aankomt op het Tourklassement. Heeft hij de benen van de Vuelta van 2022 weer te pakken? Primoz Roglic zal proberen de leegte van Planche des Belle Filles te vullen met een eindzege in Nice. Enric Mas zal stiekem naar het podium willen sluipen en Fransen zullen hopen op wonderbenen voor David Gaudu. Het grootste vraagteken zal de regerend winnaar zijn. Jonas Vingegaard viel hard in het Baskenland en verbleeft twee weken in het ziekenhuis. Is hij op tijd in vorm of breekt zijn trainingsachterstand hem op?

Hoe volg je de Tour de France 2024 via tv of online?

De Tour de France live kijken is ook dit jaar weer uitgebreid mogelijk op TV en online én natuurlijk te beluisteren via Radio Tour de France op Radio 1. Hoewel gedetailleerde informatie nog ontbreekt zal de Tour via de NOS te volgen zijn met uitzendingen op TV, radio en met een live stream op NOS.nl. Daarnaast is er ook iedere avond weer de Avondetappe met interessante gasten en analyses. De VRT volgt een soortgelijk stramien, met uitzendingen op Sporza en in de avond Vive le Vélo waar Karl van Niewkerke de dag bespreekt. Daarnaast is de Tour ook volledig te volgen, bij Eurosport.

Favorieten puntenklassement Tour de France 2024 | Welke groene trui-kanshebbers komen überhaupt tot Nice?

Nog even en het wielerspektakel genaamd de Tour de France barst weer los. De editie van 2024 zal de geschiedenisboeken ingaan als een bijzondere, daar deze door de Olympische Spelen niet op de Champs-Elysées in Parijs zal finishen. Het officieuze WK voor de sprinters wordt daar dus niet gehouden, maar wat voor invloed heeft het op de strijd voor de groene trui? In de Leiderstrui beoordeelt.

Jarenlang was de groene trui in de Ronde van Frankrijk zo'n beetje gereserveerd voor Peter Sagan, maar de rockster uit Slowakije is er dit seizoen voor de eerste maal niet meer bij. De afgelopen jaren wist hij zijn stempel evenwel ook niet meer te drukken, daar het maillot verde sinds 2020 naar Sam Bennett , Mark Cavendish, Wout van Aert en Jasper Philipsen ging.

Philipsen was vorig seizoen de sprintkoning van de Tour en won de groene trui met een stevige voorsprong op nummer twee Mads Pedersen . De Belg van Alpecin-Deceuninck heeft ook dit seizoen weer een doel gemaakt van de prijs, maar met de veranderde indeling van deze Tour de France kan het ook zomaar zijn dat iemand anders ermee gaat lopen/fietsen.

Favorieten puntenklassement Tour de France 2024

Voor de totstandkoming van deze lijst zijn (ex)-redacteuren van In de Leiderstrui gevraagd naar hun top tien op de vraag: "Wie maakt de meeste kans om de Tour de France te winnen?" Iedere top tien werd punten toegewezen, volgens het volgende rijtje: 12 punten voor de nummer één, 10 voor de nummer twee, en zo verder met 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 en 1 punt. Bij iedere renner is het totaal aantal gekregen punten omgezet in een percentage van het maximaal te behalen aantal punten. Deze staat aangegeven bij de betreffende renners. Zo krijg je een beter beeld hoe de kansenverhoudingen volgens In de Leiderstrui liggen!

Jonas Vingegaard - Visma | Lease a Bike: 9/60 punten (15,0%)

Denk je aan de groene trui, dan komt niet direct Jonas Vingegaard in je op. Toch verdient de Deense titelverdediger zijn plekje in deze lijst, op basis van zijn resultaten in de drie Tour de Frances die hij reed. Daarin is namelijk ook een stijgende lijn te zien qua eindrangschikking in het puntenklassement: een tiende (2021), zevende (2022) en vijfde (2023) viel hem al ten deel.

Niet dat Vingegaard een doel zal maken van het groene tricot, maar als hij zomaar weer een paar bergetappes weet te winnen komt hij er vanzelf te staan. Wie weet kan hij zodoende Nice bereiken als pakweg vierde of derde in het puntenklassement.

Sam Bennett - Decathlon AG2R : 9/60 punten (15,0%)

Sam Bennett is na drie jaar afwezigheid terug in de Tour de France. De Ierse sprinter won in 2020 namens Deceuninck-Quick Step de groene trui, maar was nadien niet meer te zien in de meest prestigieuze wielerkoers op aarde. Bij de formatie van Patrick Lefevere en ook BORA-hansgrohe werd Bennett driemaal buiten de selectie gelaten.

Zodoende trok hij naar Decathlon AG2R, waar hij zijn oude benen stilaan weer gevonden lijkt te hebben. In mei won hij knap vier ritten en het eindklassement in de Vierdaagse van Duinkerke, om zich vervolgens ook te mengen in het Critérium du Dauphiné. Weet hij die lijn door te trekken naar de koers die hem in 2020 zoveel bracht, maar daarna zoveel pech bezorgde?

Biniam Girmay - Intermarché-Wanty: 11/60 punten (18,3%)

Sommige ploegen nemen geen sprinter mee naar de Tour de France, andere teams dan weer juist twee. Tot die laatste categorie behoort Intermarché-Wanty, dat nog altijd op zoek is naar diens eerste ritzege in de Ronde van Frankrijk. Dit seizoen rekent de ploeg normaliter op Gerben Thijssen én Biniam Girmay om die doelstelling te bewerkstelligen.

Waar Thijssen vermoedelijk de man zal worden van de vlakke spurts, kan Girmay bergop wat langer mee. Zodoende kan de coureur uit Eritrea zich vermoedelijk ook plaatsen in de strijd om de groene trui in de Tour de France, waar hij vorig seizoen nog zijn leergeld moest betalen. Met Mike Teunissen, Hugo Page en Laurenz Rex is er alvast voldoende ondersteuning.

Dylan Groenewegen - Jayco AlUla: 12/60 punten (20,0%)

Dylan Groenewegen maakt zich namens Jayco AlUla alweer op voor zijn zevende deelname aan de Ronde van Frankrijk. Daarin boekte de rappe Amsterdammer tot dusver vier etappezeges, dus de jacht op overwinning vijf is geopend voor de snelle man in Australisch-Saoedische dienst. Zijn beste plek in het puntenklassement te Parijs was tot dusver een zevende.

Groenewegen krijgt in deze Tour de France de beschikking over een spurttrein die bestaat uit Luka Mezgec, Elmar Reinders en Luke Durbridge, terwijl ook Michael Matthews zijn steentje bij zal dragen. De Aussie, winnaar van de groene trui in 2017, krijgt daarnaast de vrijheid om zichzelf te smijten in de overgangsetappes.

Bryan Coquard - Cofidis: 22/60 punten (36,7%)

Als er één Fransman de laatste jaren een stabiele factor was in het puntenklassement van de Tour de France, dan is het Bryan Coquard . Le Coq doet altijd mee aan de tussensprints en weet zich op die manier te plaatsen, wat al resulteerde in vijf keer een plek bij de beste tien in Parijs. Afgelopen seizoen eindigde de Cofidis-sprinter op plaats drie.

Coquard boekte in de Ronde van Zwitserland zijn eerste WorldTour-overwinning uit zijn lange loopbaan en toonde daarmee aan op punt te zijn, maar op pure snelheid zijn de échte spurters hem vaak te slim en snel af. Eén ding kunnen we echter wel zeker van zijn: de Fransman is dus geen goudhaantje, verkoopt zijn huid altijd duur.

Arnaud De Lie - Lotto-Dstny: 26/60 punten (43,3%)

Lotto-Dstny rekent in de komende Tour de France op Arnaud De Lie , die in Frankrijk aan zijn allereerste grote ronde uit zijn loopbaan gaat beginnen. De Belg teert op goede resultaten in mei en juni, nadat hij door de ziekte van Lyme niet tot volledige wasdom kon komen in de voor de ploeg zo belangrijke voorjaarsklassiekers.

De Lie kun je niet typeren als een pure sprinter, maar zal zich wel in elke mogelijkheid willen mengen. Is het niet direct voor de winst, dan wel om ervaring op te doen. Daarbij kan hij goed een heuvel over, wat vaak een fijne eigenschap is in de tussen- en eindsprints.

Wout van Aert - Visma | Lease a Bike: 34/60 punten (56,7%)

Normaliter zou er helemaal geen sprake van zijn dat Wout van Aert namens Visma | Lease a Bike zou participeren in deze Tour de France, maar de omstandigheden na zijn val in Dwars door Vlaanderen zorgden er uiteindelijk toch voor dat de Belg in Firenze aan de start verschijnt. En dan kom je op de wet van Wout uit: waar hij meedoet, is hij kanshebber.

In het geval van de Tour de France denk je dan niet aan de gele, maar groene trui. De Belg sprak uit dat hij zich in eerste instantie wil focussen op het ondersteunen van Jonas Vingegaard, maar zelf wellicht ook ergens voor een ritje wil gaan. Of hij zich met het oog op de Olympische Spelen ook gaat bemoeien met de strijd om groen, lijkt niet superwaarschijnlijk. Maar je weet het nooit.

Tadej Pogacar - UAE-Team Emirates: 35/60 punten (58,3%)

Iemand die in vier deelnames aan de Ronde van Frankrijk elf ritten wist te winnen en in zijn laatste grote ronde, de Giro, zes etappe won, moeten we natuurlijk altijd meenemen in deze lijst. We hebben het dan over Tadej Pogacar . Zijn trackrecord wat betreft de groene trui? Achtste, achtste, derde en vierde.

Met de ietwat ongewone finish in Nice - lees: het zou zomaar kunnen dat weinig sprinters tot daar komen - kan dit wel eens het jaar worden waarin Pogacar onbedoeld een gooi kan doen naar groen. De Sloveen zal er zelf alleszins niet wakker van liggen: voor hem en zijn ploeg is alles erop gericht om het geel tot in Nice te brengen.

Mads Pedersen - Lidl-Trek: 54/60 punten (90,0%)

Jonathan Milan wist namens Lidl-Trek het puntenklassement in de Giro d'Italia van dit jaar op zijn naam te schrijven, volgt Mads Pedersen in de Tour de France? Het zou zomaar kunnen voor de Deen, die afgelopen jaar als tweede eindigde in de strijd om groen en in 2022 het puntenklassement van de Vuelta a Espana op zijn naam wist te schrijven.

Medekopman Tao Geoghegan Hart moest de Tour aan zich voorbij laten gaan, waardoor nog meer ogen bij Lidl-Trek gericht zullen zijn op de ex-wereldkampioen uit Scandinavië. In het Critérium du Dauphiné bewees hij alvast dat hij die druk aankan: daar wist hij op indrukwekkende wijze de enige spurterskan naar zijn hand te zetten.

Jasper Philipsen - Alpecin-Deceuninck: 56/60 punten (93,3%)

De grootste favoriet voor de groene trui is Jasper Philipsen, die bij Alpecin-Deceuninck andermaal de volledige ondersteuning krijgt om zijn doelstellingen (ritzeges en het puntenklassement) na te jagen. Daarbij kan hij onder meer rekenen op wereldkampioen Mathieu van der Poel, die vorig seizoen ook een cruciale rol vertolkte.

Met de hoeveelheid aan vlakke sprints heeft Philipsen opnieuw een goede opportuniteit om het maillot verde mee naar België te nemen en op die manier zijn ploeg te belonen voor het vertrouwen: net voor de Tour verlengde hij namelijk zijn contract tot en met 2028.

Visma har planen klar for vild Tour-start

Touren skydes i gang om præcis en uge.

En hæsblæsende og kuperet start venter rytterne i årets Tour de France. Noget for Tadej Pogacar? Ja, må man tro.

Ud fra profilen ligger både 1.- og 2. etape i hvert fald godt til sloveneren, der kan dufte tid i banken til rivalerne, heriblandt Jonas Vingegaard, der ikke kommer til Touren på 100 procent eller med et løb i benene.

Og faktisk har Team Visma-Lease a Bike kalkuleret med et tidstab, fortæller sportsdirektør Merijn Zeeman.

- Selvfølgelig har vi lavet en plan, og den plan havde vi også sidste år, hvor vi regnede med tidstab de første 10 dage. Pludselig havde vi en lille fordel over Pogacar, hvilket vi ikke forventede (efter 5. etape, red.). Nu er det også klart, at første del af Touren er en fordel for Pogacar – også selvom Jonas havde været på sit bedste, siger Zeeman på et pressemøde torsdag.

- Vi har en plan for alle scenarierne, men vi har også en plan om, at vi kører for det over tre uger, og specielt med den sidste weekend, der slutter med enkeltstarten i Nice, vil vi kæmpe for det og være i kampen til den sidste søndag, slår han fast.

Mindes stort Vingegaard-øjeblik

Jonas Vingegaard har før vist, at han kan komme tilbage efter gentagne tidstab til Tadej Pogacar.

Sidste år hentede Pogacar løbende ind på Vingegaard, inden danskeren fløj fra Passy til Combloux på 16. etape og grundlagde en ny Tour-sejr, som han satte to streger under på etapen til Courchevel dagen efter.

Året forinden, i 2022, stod den forsvarende mester Tadej Pogacar med to etapesejre og et forspring på 39 sekunder til Jonas Vingegaard inden 11. etape.

Men her angreb Primoz Roglic og Jonas Vingegaard på skift, inden danskeren stak afsted og tømte tanken på Tadej Pogacar, der krydsede målstregen næsten tre minutter efter thyboen. Dét øjeblik minder Zeeman om på torsdagens pressemøde.

- Touren varer tre uger, og jeg husker Touren i 2022, hvor ingen troede på en sejr til os og Jonas efter ni dage, og vi vendte det fuldstændig rundt på Col du Granon-etapen. Det kan ske i Touren.

- Det er ikke til at sige, hvordan den enkelte rytter har det i tredje uge. Vi kan heller ikke forudsige de taktiske situationer. Vi snakker Pogacar, men glem heller ikke Evenepoel, Roglic og Simon Yates. Så alt kan ske, siger Merijn Zeeman.

Vil kæmpe hele vejen

Én ting er sikkert. Lige meget hvordan det ser ud, vil Team Visma-Lease a Bike, hvor Jonas Vingegaard som udgangspunkt er ene kaptajn, kæmpe hele vejen.

- Selv hvis det viser sig, at Pogacar er meget, meget stærk i første uge, og at han tager tid, betyder det ikke, at vi stopper med at kæmpe. Det vil vi gøre, til vi er i Nice. Til de sidste meter af Touren, siger Merijn Zeeman.
