Lake Albert Safaris

Uganda is home to one of Africa’s highest mountain ranges, the source of the Nile, and the largest lake in Africa. Lake Albert Safaris offers nothing less than ideal hunting camps, stunning scenery, and picturesque wildlife reserves to complement your unique hunt.

Uganda contains endemic species such as the Ssese Island Sitatunga that can only be found on the Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria and are key collectors species.

There are five prime hunting areas, each with exceptional accommodation and a wealth of indigenous species.

Bruce Martin founded the company with the aim of conserving what was left of the species in Uganda, through ethical and sustainable hunting. Over the past twenty years, he has achieved over and above that goal, evident in the exponential wildlife population growth seen in the reserves. Bruce’s contribution to conservation is clear and he has created the perfect example of how to successfully manage wildlife reserves and incorporate hunting.

In hunting with Lake Albert Safaris, you will receive an experience packed with memorable moments and long lasting friendships. We hope to see you in the near future.

Uganda is a landlocked country and sits 800 kilometres inland from the Indian Ocean and lies on the equator. Uganda's geography and landscape is very diverse in that it consists of volcanic hills, montane forests, savannahs and lakes. The country sits at an average of 900 meters above sea level. To the west a natural boundary is composed of the Virunga Mountains, the Rwenzori Range, and the Western Rift Valley. Uganda's outstanding features include the largest freshwater lake on the continent, Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile.

  • Pvt Concession

Kabwoya wildlife reserve is an unfenced, free-range savannah wildlife reserve. This spot is known as the hidden gem of the Albertine Rift Valley. Kabwoya wildlife reserve is sandwiched between the Bunyoro escarpment in western Uganda on the shores of Lake Albert. Established as a reserve in 2002, Lake Albert contains a wealth of species such as the Uganda Kob, Nile Buffalo, Oribi, East African bush Duiker and various primates.

Pian Upe is an unfenced, free-range savannah wildlife reserve. This spot is named after the Pian tribe, part of the Karamajong clan in northeastern Uganda. Pian Upe lies between Mount Elgon National Park and Kidepo valley National Park and was established in the 1960s. Pian Upe is the second largest protected area in Uganda. The reserve contains pristine habitat with unique wildlife including the Roan antelope, Jackson's Hartbeest, Guenther's Dik Dik and Chandler's mountain Reedbuck just to name a few.

Lake Mburo is an unfenced, free-range wildlife area and is the smallest of Uganda's savannah national parks. This area was originally gazetted in 1933 as a controlled hunting area and then upgraded to a game reserve in 1963. The Banyankole Bahima residents continually grazed cattle in the reserve until it was granted national park status in 1983. Lake Mburo is located in the Kiruhura district in the western region of Uganda.

The concession surrounds most of the park with the largest section on Lake Nshara consisting of Wooded savannah and papyrus swamp. The wildlife area contains species such as the Nile Buffalo, East African Eland, East African Sitatunga, the Topi and a number of other unique species.

The Ssese islands occupy the northwestern corner of Lake Victoria and consist of 84 islands within the archipelago. About 43 of the islands are inhabited. The islands vary in size from less than 10,000 m², to over 25 miles long for the largest island, Bugala. The largest town, Kalangala, can be accessed via a ferry ride three hours from the mainland. The Ssese island Sitatunga is the only species that can be hunted in this area and is a prime collectors species that can only be hunted with Lake Albert Safaris. Sitatunga are found on most of the islands in patches of rainforest. On the hunt you will have to cross between islands in wooden dugout canoes for a once in a lifetime experience.

Bugungu Wildlife reserve protects the savannah grasslands and seasonal wetlands at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment to the western side of the enormous Murchison Falls national park. Bugungu wildlife reserve is situated between the Bulisa and Masindi district and was established and gazetted in 1968. The reserve is home to several species such as the Oribi, Uganda Kob and Nile Buffalo.

Lake Albert

Lake Albert lies in the north of the Great Rift Valley, located on the border between Uganda and DR Congo . The lake’s principal rivers are the Semliki River from Lake Edward and the Victoria Nile through Lake Kyoga. The stunning Congolese mountain ranges in the east, Mountain Rwenzori  in the south, and the magnificent rocky escarpment in the west all contribute to the breathtaking scenery that surrounds Lake Albert. It is more than 160 kilometers long and around 30 kilometers wide, with a depth of 51 meters and a surface elevation of 619 meters above sea level. Lake Albert is a worthwhile stop en route to Kibale Forest national park and Queen Elizabeth National Park . Lake Albert has a quiet natural beauty and a tranquil ambiance, and it’s a fantastic place to unwind after exploring Murchison Falls National Park for a few days.

Things to do around Lake Albert:

Game watching.

Hippos, buffalo, crocodiles, waterbuck, duiker, oribi, warthog, black-and-white  primates like colobus monkeys, leopards, and the olive baboon can all be found in and around Lake Albert. The area is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with an estimated count of up to 460 bird species of uganda . The Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is home to many of the wildlife at the Lake. The reserve includes a part of the lake. Wildlife can be seen up close and personal by exploring the area on foot, quad bike, or mountain bike. The Semliki wildlife  Reserve, located on the southern tip of Lake Albert, also offers excellent opportunities to see wildlife such as elephants, chimpanzees , and the exceedingly rare and endangered shoebill stork.

Lake Albert

A boat ride on the Lake in the early morning or late in the evening is an unforgettable experience. The light shines brilliantly off the mirror-like waters of the lake, which is surrounded by the majestic Blue and Rwenzori mountains , producing a breathtaking backdrop. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the adorable and highly uncommon shoebill stork, which hides among the papyrus and weeds on the swampy shorelines.

Mountain Cycling

Cycling and wildlife viewing are ideal in the area surrounding Lake Albert, which includes the Kabwoya Game Reserve. There are multiple trails and terrains to pick from, each with a different level of difficulty. You can hire bikes from your lodge or bring your own. cycling is one of the greatest ways to explore Albert.

Quad Biking

Kabwoya is the few wildlife areas that allows quad biking. Quad riding tours allow visitors to explore isolated locations that safari cars cannot access owing to loose soil. Quad riding is an excellent opportunity to experience the stunning scenery, animals, and plentiful birds of Uganda’s otherwise inaccessible highlands.

Guided Nature Walks

Birding in Volcanoes National Park

Bird and wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy guided nature excursions because the shores of Lake Albert and the Albertine escarpment provide excellent habitats for birds and primates . A nature walk is best done early in the morning or late in the evening when it much cooler outside. Comfortable walking shoes, long pants, and plenty of drinking water are required. Trails can be tailored to your fitness level and typically last between one to three hours.

Fishing safaris

With a fishing safari on Lake Albert, you can catch your own dinner. The lake contains various types of catfish, but the main treasure is the Nile Perch, the water’s largest fish predator. Fishing is permitted in specific portions of the lake, and permits must be obtained ahead of your trip from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Many fishing villages surround Lake Albert, and at night, fisherman light up the lake to attract fish, creating a wonderfully captivating picture. Check out fishing tours on lake victoria

The current Lake Albert was called Mwitanzige, Lake Mobutu Sese Seko. It is one of the African Great lakes, the Africa’s seventh largest lake and number twenty in the whole world by volume. It is seated on the Uganda – Democratic Republic of Congo border. The great rankings and ratings of this Lake Albert make it one destination that any passionate natural discoverer should look for to establish why this Lake Albert is too over rated to such positions on the globe.

On top of Lake Albert itself, there is are other series of attractions surrounding it enriching your sightings with a lot of magnificent moments while on Uganda safari . In the southwest, the Semliki River brings into the lake the waters of Lake Edward , of the Congo Escarpment, and of the rain-soaked Ruwenzori Range , building a large alluvial plain in the process. There is a considerable expanse of lowland at the northern end, where the Victoria Nile enters as a sluggish stream in a swampy delta. Almost immediately the lake narrows into the Albert Nile , through which it supplies water to the White Nile. In the west and east, the lake is bordered by forested cliffs and ravines.

The Albert Lake marks the extreme end of the arm of the western rift valley and it stretches to over 160 km in length, 30 km in width and with a depth of up to 51m and 619m surface elevation above sea level. The Albert Lake is part of the upper Nile complex system drawing most of its waters from the Victoria Nile that rises from the gigantic Victoria Lake in its rising from Edward Lake in its south west.

The Lake Albert attractions speak are too sound that they speak for themselves since they are wildly and worldly popular. What to see here include:

  The swampy vegetation

This is characterized by short swamp grass with stunted trees that are go for photography.  The swampy vegetation is found and can be seen in the southern part where the Semliki River empties itself at.

The Rwenzori Mountains

Famously called as the mountains of the moon, is the tower in the southern direction. This gives you an opportunity to get nearer to the Rwenzori mountains national park for a mountain climbing experience, cultural tours, birding and other activities that will give you a lot to tell others about Uganda while on your Uganda safari .

The Blue Mountains of Congo.

While in still staring at Mount Rwenzori, there are Blue Mountains of Congo waiting to catch your eyesight too. The Blue Mountains of Congo sit in the north western shore of Lake Albert.

The Lake Albert

Named as Albert is an attraction filled with sparkling water with aquatic life like Nile perch fish and tilapia.  And several other features. The lake is openly comfortable for doping boat cruise as you reach to the distant places from the shores in the 160km length lake.

The area where Lake Albert is located features low population growth with small settlements at Pakwach and Butiaba not forgetting Wanseko.

The history surrounding Lake Albert .

Lake Albert was discovered by Sir Samuel Baker who named it after Prince Albert who was the Consort of Queen Victoria. Despite the changes in the names like the former Congo President Mobutu made an attempt to rename it after himself, the lake has maintained its crown name.

What to do.

There are several activities to do around and in this lake like a boat cruise on it, river Nile, Visit to the Rwenzori Mountains and the whole Rwenzori Mountains national park, cross over to the Blue Mountains of Congo, visiting the Mighty Murchison falls National Park and so many others. This lake is so much surrounded by the most valuable natural and human made attractions. The only thing you need to do mow is tom inquire with us and share that something you have been looking for seemingly yet it’s not sighted and we at Jewel Safaris will wholly come to you and save you from the hustle.  We are ready with your itinerary and package to this lake

  • With an area of about 2,160 square miles (5,600 square km), a length of 100 miles (160 km), and an average width of 22 miles (35 km), Albert is a shallow body of water, averaging about 80 feet (25 m) in depth; its maximum depth is 190 feet (60 m).
  • Lake Albert lies at an elevation of 2,021 feet (616 m) in the lowest and hottest part of Uganda. The mean annual temperature is 78° F (26° C), and rainfall averages 34–40 inches (864–1,016 mm). Because of the high rate of evaporation, the waters are somewhat saline, and free phosphate is also present. Game—including elephant, buffalo, hippopotamus, crocodile, and antelope—is abundant, especially in the Semliki Plains and the northern shores near Murchison Falls (Kabarega Falls). Fishing sustains a scanty population, located in lakeshore villages.

Lake Albert

Lake Albert is situated in the center of the continent, on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo . This lake is in the northernmost of the chain of lakes in the Albertine Rift.

It is about 100 miles long and 19 miles wide, with a maximum depth of 51 meters or 168 feat, and a surface elevation of 619M above sea level.

The Lake is part of the upper Nile system. Its main sources are the Victoria Nile; ultimately coming from Lake Victoria to the southeast, and the Semliki River , which issues from Lake Edward to the southwest. The water of the Albert is much more saline than that of Victoria. Its outlet, at the northernmost tip of the lake; is the Albert Nile , which becomes known as the Mountain Nile when it enters South Sudan.

There are swamps at the Southern end of the lake. Farther south looms the Rwenzori Range , while a range of hills called the Blue Mountains tower over the northwestern shore. There also a few settlements along the shore which include Butiaba and Pakwach.

The lake attracts fishing, an amazing activity and as well provides a good view of the lake with good atmosphere.
