20 Exciting Things To Do In French Lick Indiana

On the hunt for the top things to do in French Lick, Indiana? You have come to the right place!

Between the incredible amenities at the resort and nearby attractions, French Lick is a great place for families, couples, and getaways with friends.

Where Is French Lick, Indiana

French Lick is in Orange County, Indiana, in the state’s southern portion. For those driving, many opt to take I-64 over country highways.

From Lousiville, KY, the drive is roughly an hour.

The nearest airport to French Lick, Indiana, is Louisville, KY. (SDF). French Lick does have a small municipal airport.

About French Lick

The area of French Lick Indiana rose to fame as guests flocked to partake of the “miracle waters” from the natural sulfur and mineral springs. In 1845, Dr. William Bowles built the French Lick Springs Hotel, which began to attract wealthy and prominent vacationers.

Five short years later, Dr. John Lane built a health resort a mile up the road and named it Mile Lick Inn, which later would be changed to West Baden Springs.

Library at French Lick Resort

In 1888 Lee W. Sinclair purchased the West Baden Springs Hotel, only to have it destroyed by a fire in 1901. However, Sinclair used the fire as an opportunity to build his dream luxury resort which was modeled after the grandest spas of Europe. The hotel was completed in 9 months, and at the time, the dome was the world’s largest free-span dome which stretched 200 feet.

The West Baden Springs Hotel soon turned from luxurious to dismal as the hotel traded hands after the stock market crash of 1929. It was sold to the Society of Jesus, where the Jesuit priests removed many of the hotel’s lavish decor, capped off the natural springs, and ran the hotel as a seminary for 30 years.

After the Northwood College took over from the Society of Jesus for a brief period, the magnificent hotel sat empty for 13 years and crumbled. The Indiana Landmarks preservation group, along with philanthropist Bill and Gayle Cook, the historic hotel saw new life with a multi-million dollar restoration.

Today the French Lick Resort is the heart of French Lick, offering guests endless activities and amenities paired with historic luxury.

Kids even have the chance to participate in helping care for these gentle giants with options to help scrub, rinse or paint toenails. Lucky for us, we were the only family, so we got to do it all!

  • Admission is priced per person, not per car.
  • Your ticket is good for general admission from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. However, there is no need to be there at a designated time.
  • Once one feed cup is gone, you can start distributing the remaining feed in smaller portions by using the empty cup.
  • The emus are quite aggressive eaters. While they won’t harm you, the initial shock of the violent pecking into the food cup was something to behold. They ended up being my daughter’s favorite.
  • Animals will pop their head into an open window! Keep alert!
  • Follow the safari rules. There are portions of the safari where guests need to keep their windows rolled up and remain in the car.
  • We pulled our daughter out of her car seat to sit in the front to feed the animals.

Your Weekend Guide to French Lick, IN

This winter has been all about creating fun “daycations” to keep things exciting through COVID restrictions. Staying in our home base of Indiana, we looked for a weekend trip with out-of-the-box experiences. Well look no further than French Lick, where you’ll get ambushed by emus and hit the casino all in one day! Check out our weekend guide to French Lick. We’ll give you the details on what you should do and see in this little oasis smack dab in the middle of rural Indiana:

Starting from Indy, drive 2 hours south until you reach the quaint downtown of French Lick. The beautiful French Lick Resort can’t be missed. The historic look and feel of the 2 luxury hotels definitely gives off high-end European vibes. After checking in to French Lick Springs Hotel , grab brunch at one of the many restaurants on property, like the Grand Colonnade.

Remember that ambush of Emus we mentioned? Well you can have that terrifying experience too. One of the best kept secrets of French Lick is Wilstem , a wildlife park with up close and personal animal encounters. We did the Drive-Thru Safari Park , where we got to feed a range of different species – from llamas to yaks – right from our car window. It was equal parts amazing and scary; large animals stalking your car for food can get feisty. We’d also HIGHLY recommend not feeding the Emus. Those ugly birds are hell bent on stabbing your solo cup of food with their sharp beaks and will pop up out of nowhere, so nooo thank you. Never trust birds is the real lesson here. One of the highlights was getting to drive through a herd of bison.

french lick day trip

We also did the Sloth Encounter , where we got to pet and feed Luna, a sassy and very spunky sloth. Her keeper was super knowledgeable and we spent almost an hour one-on-one asking him all about the species. Did you know that sloths only go to the bathroom once a week because they digest their food so slow? Fascinating stuff here people.

Another huge highlight was feeding carrots to the park’s two giraffes. Those guys are funny creatures too – long neck, small antlers and a purple tongue…why? It was a very surreal experience getting to interact with such unique animals. At a city zoo, you’d typically pay an arm and a leg to have those types of encounters. Not to mention the huge crowds; but not at Wilstem.

Once you’ve been slobbered on and harassed for food by Wilstem’s finest creatures, head to French Lick Resort’s Casino for the night! While the gambling hasn’t changed, just know that some new COVID rules are in place. For example, you have to stay in designated lounge areas to have a drink. So take advantage of the slower pace and empty tables to learn some of those card games you’ve been too scared to try. We tried blackjack for the first time, and it was fun to just have the dealer and 1 or 2 other people at the table. There’s also still plenty of money to be won at the slot machines.

After you’ve experienced a rush at the casino, wind down for the night with a dip in the outdoor hot tub. Have room service bring you a robe (they’re packaged in bags, so you know they haven’t been worn) and hit the hot tub in style. Nothing says vacation like enjoying a glass of champagne in a hot tub and then getting out to a warm, fluffy robe.

Start your morning off right by taking the trolley from the French Lick Springs Hotel to French Lick West Baden. Tour around the gardens and property before stepping into the hotel’s gorgeous atrium. How could you not feel like royalty in a place like this? The hotel has a really cool history too – it used to be a seminary and part of a private college – so take the historical tour if you can.

french lick day trip

Before road tripping your way back home, stop at T he Bagel Bistro . It’s right across from French Lick West Baden and has an array of bagel sandwiches. The staff was amazing and made special boozie coffee drinks for us just because. Also, order the giant pickle (don’t ask questions, just do it)!

Looking for More To Do? Here are our Honorable Mentions :

  • The Spas at French Lick West Baden and French Lick Report – *Because of COVID, spa services are limited. We plan on revisiting in the Summer to do a full review, stay tuned!
  • Patoka Lake Winery – because a wine tasting is never a bad idea on vacation
  • Paoli Peaks – If you’re visiting in the Winter and looking for something active, check out this ski resort where you can hit the slopes and try out arctic blast tubing

French Lick is definitely a secret Indiana gem worth a weekend of exploring. Have anything we should add to our guide? Feel free to comment below!  You can find more weekend getaways in local travel .

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

Hundreds of people packed the Pete Dye Golf Course in French Lick, Indiana, on Monday to view the solar eclipse.

People traveled from as far as Arizona.

"We're from Indiana, and we have good friends that are here so this was a good opportunity to come back and see friends we haven’t seen for a few years," said Phil Gleason.

The Great Eclipse

Others came to set up telescopes and cameras to snap pictures of the eclipse as a part of their hobby.

That hobby brought Curt Liebman from Louisville to French Lick.

“I got my first telescope when I was 12," he said. "I saw the rings of Saturn, and I was hooked.”

Some people saw it as an opportunity to make memories with their family, such as Debbie Wanke.

Others found it to be just an amazing event to witness.

-

“It's life-affirming and life-changing," said a spectator.

As it began to get dimmer during the eclipse, people began to clap and cheer.

"I just think it’s awesome; it’s mind-boggling," said Danielle Lapayowker.

A spokesperson for French Lick Resort says about 500 people were expected at the event.

Anticipation builds in French Lick ahead of Monday’s solar eclipse

F RENCH LICK, Ind. (WAVE) - People have come from all over to witness this total solar eclipse. The duration in this location is three minutes and five seconds. Totality is expected around 3:05 pm. Anticipation for that moment is building.

30 members of one family reunited from Chicago, Indiana, and North Carolina for the experience.

“My aunts and uncles, sister and brother, and a lot of cousins,” said 8-year-old Vivian Knight.

Her cousin, Jack, says he couldn’t believe he was getting this opportunity.

“I was like we’re going to see what? I was jumping up and down and running around the room. I was so excited,” Jack Winters said.

We met sisters who came from Cincinnati.

“Laura said ‘do you want to go?’ and I’m like ‘yes. Absolutely. I’ve never seen it.’ I thought it would be fascinating,” Diana Murrer said.

Her sister Laura was in the path of totality in 2017 and said it was something she had to see again.

“It was surreal. When it got in totality everything went quiet. The birds stopped singing It was tranquility. It was a neat experience,” Laura Murrer said.

Orange County Sheriff Davy Henderson says his team has been planning for this for a year.

French Lick Resort is allowing those not staying at the hotel to come to some spots for the moment. And Paoli Peaks also has viewing areas.

“My biggest tip would be come up to Orange County, enjoy the beautiful view, and try to stay off the highway and stay safe,” Sheriff Henderson said.

One eclipse expert said his biggest advice is to get into the path of totality. 99% might sound like a lot, but it’s like going to a Taylor Swift concert and sitting in the parking lot.
