Tour as a prospective student

Take in the sights of Yale’s campus through the eyes of a residing student and see if you can imagine yourself becoming one! September through May, Monday through Saturday, you can tour the residential colleges, libraries, green spaces and historical landmarks all while chatting with your student guide.

The university also offers specialized science and engineering tours that are led by students studying in those fields. Find out about the exciting programs, projects and research currently taking place in their labs.

All the sessions for prospective Yalies start at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (38 Hillhouse Ave). If you’re walking there from New Haven Green, stop at the Blue State Coffee on Wall Street, a student hot spot opposite Silliman College, for a drink to go!

Alongside tours, there are many admissions events that you can join throughout the year including visiting a class and requesting an on-campus interview. Check out the admissions website for schedules and registration.

Tour as a visitor

From the Visitor Center on one side of New Haven Green (149 Elm Street), you can take your spot on one of the campus tours.  The tour starts with a very informative and playful video that gives a broad overview of what this university has to offer its students.  This 60-minute walking tour covers central campus and shares plenty of interesting details about Yale’s 300-year history as well as what life is like through the eyes of the student guide. Take a look in one of the 14 residential colleges, the impressive record-breaking libraries and walk the paths previously taken by Yale’s many famous alumni.

One of the best parts of the walking tours is getting to hear from the student guides!  Take advantage of your time to ask them questions and hear about their classes, extra-curriculars and student life in New Haven. Wondering where to go next for a snack or directions around the downtown area? Your guide will be happy to help!

Juneteenth 2024: celebrating the end of slavery in the u.s..

Juneteenth flag with Harkness Tower in the background

On June 19, 1865, Union Army soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the freedom of enslaved people there. President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier, but enslavers in some parts of the country ignored it.

While slavery did not finally end across the United States until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment on Dec. 6, 1865, June 19 came to be commemorated in many African-American communities as a “second Independence Day.” In 2021 it became a federally recognized U.S. holiday, which Yale honors also.

Here you can find information about Juneteenth and related events happening on and around Yale’s campus, as well as other opportunities and resources to celebrate, reflect, and learn.

Around New Haven

New Haven’s International Festival of Arts and Ideas — in collaboration with partners including Yale University, the Official Juneteenth Coalition of Greater New Haven, and the local Artsucation Academy Network — is hosting several free Juneteenth celebrations and other events for people of all ages:

Friday, June 14, 7 p.m., New Haven Green — The “ Juneteenth Celebration ” will offer a lively musical celebration of liberation and joy by the New Haven All-Stars, featuring The Keepers of the Culture Performing Arts Company, Manny James and Soulclectic, and The Rahsaan Langley Project.

Saturday, June 15, noon, New Haven Green — “ Juneteenth Village ,” a family-friendly pop-up festival hosted by the mother-son duo Mama Ngina and Rahsaan Langley, will include games, musical performances, educational presentations, an elder honoring ceremony, and more.

Sunday, June 16, 9:30 a.m., New Haven Green — A “ Juneteenth Bike Tour ” will lead participants on a 12-mile ride showcasing New Haven’s rich community of Black creativity and innovation, past and present. The ride will take in key historical and cultural landmarks where Africans and African Americans have left their imprint on the history of New Haven and beyond. (Registration required.)

Sunday, June 16, 11 a.m., Yale Schwarzman Center, 168 Grove St., lower-level Dance Studio — “ EveryBody Dances with Dr. Hanan Hameen ,” a special presentation of the Yale Schwarzman Center’s weekly dance masterclass series, will explore traditional celebratory Afrodiasporic dances from the Caribbean and West Africa. (Registration required.)

Tuesday, June 18, 11 a.m., New Haven Museum, 114 Whitney Ave. — “ Shining Light on Truth: New Haven, Yale, and Slavery ” offers a guided tour of the New Haven Museum exhibition of the same name, led by co-curator and Beinecke Library staff member Michael Morand. The exhibition complements the publication of the book “ Yale and Slavery: A History ,” authored by Yale historian David W. Blight with the Yale and Slavery Research Project , and draws from the research project’s key findings.

Wednesday, June 19, noon, New Haven Green — “ Constance Baker Motley Stamp ” invites kids of all ages to join Constance L. Royster and New Haven educator Katlyn Rapini for a moderated Q&A discussing the life of Constance Baker Motley, the first Black female federal judge and a highly accomplished civil rights attorney. The United States Postal Service issued a Forever Stamp in honor of Motley in January as part of its “Black Heritage” series. The Q&A will be followed by a stamp design workshop.

Watch, listen, and read

Explore the history of Juneteenth and the contributions of African Americans, and reflect on the work against racism that still remains, through educational resources curated by the Yale Office of the Secretary and Vice President for University Life .

Belonging at Yale’s “ Focus on Juneteenth ” page offers a collection of events, media, and other opportunities to educate ourselves and continue the fight for justice.

At the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, “ Douglass, Baldwin, Harrington ” — an exhibition on view through Sunday, July 7 — draws from the library’s Walter O. Evans Collection to celebrate three towering figures of Black history, art, and culture: Frederick Douglass, James Baldwin, and Ollie Harrington.

The Beinecke also holds a collection of films on American life in the 1920s recorded by African-American Baptist minister and filmmaker Rev. Solomon Sir Jones. The collection includes remarkable footage of a 1925 parade celebrating Juneteenth in Texas (see below).  The entire collection can be viewed online .

The only trouble is that it probably never happened, at least not the way 18th-century Yale President Thomas Clap described it above. The late Yale historian George Wilson Pierson '26 devoted an entire book to Clap’s story, concluding that, while it had elements of truth (some of the ministers did give books before and after the founding), Clap had engineered the tale to score a legal point. Embroiled in a dispute with the Connecticut General Assembly over control of the College in 1766, Clap sought to show that the College had been founded privately before it received its charter from the colony. The ploy worked, and the story endured for more than 200 years. It is depicted in wood and stone in the Branford Chapel and Sterling Memorial Library, and is even the origin of the name of Branford College. It is, in short, the mother of Yale’s tall tales.

While we know the source of the “40 folios” story, there are a number of other Yale tales whose veracity is no less dubious, but whose origins are a bit cloudier. Many of these stories find their way into the daily campus tours led by undergraduates. (The more responsible guides are careful to label them as legends.) But while Clap sought to aggrandize Yale, these contemporary yarns aims to humanize the place. Like Greek myths, which showed their gods to be as fallible as mere humans, Yale’s tall tales are filled with half-mad donors, avaricious administrators, and remarkably incompetent builders. What follows are a few of the stories that have made the circuit in recent years—and, where possible, the truth behind them.

The College With Two Faces

When the University expanded across York Street to build two new residential colleges in 1930, architect James Gamble Rogers decided that red-brick Georgian architecture would be more appropriate to the scale of the neighborhood than the previously favored Gothic. (The Georgian style also happened to be cheaper to build.) But since one of the two, Davenport College, would face York Street, where Rogers had already orchestrated a Gothic streetscape for Branford and Saybrook, he dressed that façade in sandstone and gave it Gothic details.

A straightforward enough story—too straightforward to make a really good saga, so Yale mythmakers have created family dramas worthy of Aeschylus to explain the dichotomy. One tale has it that Mrs. Stephen Harkness funded Harkness Tower with the provision that everything built within view of its top must be of the Gothic style, resulting in the York Street coverup. (One problem: The interior of Davenport is plainly visible from Harkness.) An explanation with Oedipal overtones posits that James Gamble Rogers died during construction, and that his son, taking over the job, promptly overthrew his father’s beloved Gothic. (But Rogers lived until 1947, well after the college was completed.) A version that combines both stories has a Gothic-hating Edward Harkness bucking his mother’s wishes after her death.

Knaves of the Cathedral

Why does Yale have a Gothic gymnasium? You could easily say “Why not?” but that would leave the University a fable poorer. One myth holds that Mrs. Payne Whitney wanted Yale to build a great cathedral with her money, but that the University preferred a gym. Since she was getting old, the story goes, administrators thought they could get away with a bit of subterfuge. They instructed architect John Russell Pope to design a gym that could pass for a cathedral. Then, when it was completed, the President drove Mrs. Whitney past the finished building. She died not long after, content in the knowledge that she had given Yale such a grand house of worship—and not what came to be known as “the cathedral of sweat.”

The Incredible Disappearing Library

It was originally to have been made of green onyx to celebrate the fortune the donor made in S&H Green Stamps. Its sophisticated fire-prevention system automatically sucks all the oxygen out of the book stacks in case of fire, sacrificing any library personnel unlucky enough to be inside. And best of all, the whole building can be lowered deep into the ground to protect it from a nuclear holocaust. The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library is customarily the last stop on the official Yale tour, so the guides have clearly worked hard to come up with a kicker for departing guests. For the record, the Beineckes did own S&H Green Stamps, but the marble was never intended to be green. The original fire-prevention system—which has since been replaced—was designed to flood the stacks with carbon dioxide, but it was to be activated only after the area was evacuated. Curator Christa Sammons (who claims to have originated the green marble story) says that sinking the building into the ground wouldn’t work so well: The high water table below the building would leave the books unscorched, but soaked.

The Man Who Loved Vanderbilt

Legends tend to rise—and evolve—-concerning stops along the prescribed route that tour guides follow. Fifteen years ago, tourists were often told that Vanderbilt Hall’s courtyard faced the “wrong” way (toward Chapel Street) because the builders had poured the foundations while reading the plans upside down. The opulent “Vanderbilt suite” above the archway—reserved for members of the Vanderbilt family when attending Yale—was mentioned in passing. These days, the upside-down plans story has been discarded (it was apparently too much even for tourists) in favor of the purely fictional tale of how, after many years, a Vanderbilt scion claimed his right to live in the suite—in the same year the building was designated as housing for Yale’s first female undergraduates. The story has it that the young man threatened to sue before Yale agreed to let him live there, and that the happy result was that he met his future wife in Vanderbilt Hall.

Foot Fetish

One of the most striking testaments to the mythmaking powers of tour guides is Theodore Dwight Woolsey’s toe. Some time in the last ten years, someone invented a “tradition” of rubbing the toe of the Woolsey statue on the Old Campus for luck, explaining that students employ this practice before exams. Similar traditions exist at many other institutions, but it’s difficult to find an alumnus over the age of 30 who has ever heard about President Woolsey’s toe. Nevertheless, tour guides spread the story diligently, inviting visitors to give it a try themselves. As a result, the statue, the rest of which is a dull gray-green, has a left toe that has been rubbed shiny, and the story seems for all practical purposes as old as the statue itself.

“Yale’s Global Initiatives: Impact for Humanity” is theme for annual Yale Alumni Association Assembly

yale university alumni tours

Hundreds of alumni leaders explored Yale’s impact on humanity at the 2022 Yale Alumni Association Assembly and Yale Alumni Fund Convocation as they gathered on the Yale campus for the first time since 2019. The event’s theme, “Yale’s Global Initiatives: Impact for Humanity,” provided an opportunity for alumni to learn from their peers, discuss available resources, and gain deeper insights on Yale’s impact on the world. Exploration of how the university supports the Yale community to improve the human condition was highlighted throughout the two-day in-person event, held November 10-11.

In addition to Yale President Peter Salovey’s opening address, the event featured plenary sessions with faculty and alumni and breakout tours of the newest facilities on campus. Among its many highlights were a Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs Panel featuring Dean James Levinsohn and Ambassador Paul Simons. In his remarks, President Salovey said, “As we work toward the discovery of truth on campus, we can also see, with alarming consequence, the dissemination of falsehood around the globe. So we need to prepare leaders to be critical thinkers and to be informed by facts and analysis. It is Yale’s responsibility to share light and truth — to increase knowledge and understanding of pressing challenges.”
