Pro Wakeboard Tour 2023 Stop #3 Groveland

Progression is the focus of every action sport. On occasion there is a single event that brings that progression to light and the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour Stop #3 served as that platform. Never-been-dones, rarely seen contest tricks, and an overall competitive lift were all on display on Lake David in Groveland, Florida in between classic Central Florida weather delays and glassy conditions.

The new format heavily influenced by the riders was a head to head, bracket style, single elimination tournament with scores based on three passes which brought a unique feel to the day. The first pass was judged on the best 4-trick line. Next pass gave the chance to land a single best trick off the wake. Finally, they capped off their run with a double-up. 

The heavy tricks coming out the day were multiple different riders landing clean Crow 7s, Tyler Higham ‘s wake-to-wake TS BS 900 and Mute HS 10, Luca Kidd’s perfect double grabbed HS BS 900, and a switch heelside 10 off the wake by Kai Ditsch to be the first ever to land it in a contest.

West Coast native Tyler Higham was the perfect competitor to take the win in an event filled with stylish, technical riding. As a high seed coming into the day tied for 1st in overall standings, Higham took advantage of the new format.

“I felt like I’ve had the tricks to win an event for the last few years, but my consistency has really come a long way.”

That has to make the field nervous because a confident rider with a deep bag of tricks that all look perfect is something you don’t want to see in your heat as a competitor.

In a twist of fate, Tyler drew his brother’s name out of a hat for the first round. “I told everyone that I knew I was going to pick his name. It was cool to ride against him but it was a bummer that one of us would be knocked out in the first round,” said Tyler. That was the theme of the day as Tyler continued to go up against his best friends and riding crew. Aptly named “La Familia” the group of riders has a lock on the freshest video content, newest tricks, and overall good vibes in the wake community right now. “We decided the night before to bring out our tent, grill, and music. It felt like we were just riding at home because that is what we do everyday. Grill out food, take a few sets and root each other on. We all just love the sport of wakeboarding so much. It was a bummer that we were all on the same side of the bracket besides Kai.”

That relaxed feel propelled Higham to push the limits of his riding even when he didn’t have to. In the Quarter finals against his crew-mate Sam Brown, all he needed was to land a solid trick off the double up. “Since he went first and fell and he is one of my boys, it didn’t feel right to just do something easy,” explained Higham as he reflected on landing a perfect switch mute heelside frontside 1080.

On the wakesurf side, long-time surf tour staple Sean Silvera came out of competitive retirement to show the young guns that he still has what it takes to win. Edging out 13 year old Jett Lambert was no easy feat but certainly provided some bragging rights. Lambert placed 2nd and secured his first overall PWT Surf title. 

The Jr. Pro division had Beaux Wildman taking the win and extending his lead in the overall standings.

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

Grayson Murray, who won his second PGA TOUR title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, passed away Saturday.

"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Commissioner Monahan continued. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Grief counselors were made available at the venues for this week’s PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events. Commissioner Monahan, who traveled from TOUR headquarters in Florida to the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, said he was "devastated" by the loss.

Grayson's parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in a statement Sunday that the cause of death was suicide .

"Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents wrote. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed."

Murray, 30, was a standout golfer from his youth. He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships (2006-08) and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group. He made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at age 16, becoming the second-youngest player ever to do so. After stints at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University, he got the break he needed in 2016 when he was given a sponsor exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour event near his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. He finished inside the top 10 at that event, the Rex Hospital Open, which qualified him for another start. When he posted another top 10 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, his professional career took off. He concluded his season with a victory at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to finish second on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and earn full status on the PGA TOUR for the 2016-17 season. The win came a week before his 23rd birthday.

Murray wasted little time establishing himself on golf’s biggest stage as a rookie. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship while still just 23 years old. His final-round 68 not only secured a one-shot victory, but also solidified a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA TOUR season. He finished 66th in the FedExCup and earned nearly $1.5 million.

Grayson struggled for the next few seasons on the PGA TOUR. In 2023, he found his game again on the Korn Ferry Tour; he notched two victories – the Advent Health Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville – to finish fourth on that tour’s points list and earn a spot back onto the PGA TOUR for the following season.

Murray opened the 2024 season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He made a clutch up and down on the 72nd hole for a birdie to force a playoff. Then he sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley. He reached a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking after that victory.

2024 RBC Canadian Open predictions, expert picks, odds, field rankings, golf best bets

The pga tour travels to the great white north for one of the best events of the season.

How do you follow up an all-time great tournament? Well, the 2024 RBC Canadian Open is about to find out. Hamilton Golf & Country Club will host this year's Canadian Open, and it has the unenviable task of playing sequel to what may have been the best finish of the 2023 season.

Last year, Nick Taylor became the first Canadian since 1964 to win his home country's open, and he did so in the most dramatic fashion. Holing a 72-foot eagle putt on the third playoff hole against Tommy Fleetwood, Taylor tossed his putter in the air and immediately jumped into rarified air when it comes to Canadian sports lore.

He'll attempt to go back-to-back while being joined in the field by a number of his fellow countrymen, including Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Hadwin. You may remember Hadwin as the man tackled by security during Taylor's celebration, but it was Rory McIlroy who tackled the field the last time the Canadian Open was held at Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

Firing a final-round 61 where he flirted with the possibility of a sub-60 performance, McIlroy ran away from the field for a seven-stroke victory over Webb Simpson and Shane Lowry in 2019. The four-time major champion aims to get back into the winner's circle for the third time in his Canadian Open career and grab his third trophy of the year just as the summer months roll around.

While McIlroy stalks the path towards 30 PGA Tour wins, players like Fleetwood, Cameron Young and Maverick McNealy are still in search of their first. Fleetwood experienced an especially painful defeat at the hands of Taylor last year and hopes to play himself back into contention as does Young who has already notched a runner-up result in 2024.

Sahith Theegala, Sam Burns and Lowry all have eyes on getting back into the winner's circle with others such as Adam Scott, Tom Kim and Keith Mitchell all potentially factoring over the weekend in Canada.

• Rory McIlroy (4-1): Post-Masters McIlroy is finding his groove. A winner in two of his last three starts, the Northern Irishman returns to a comfortable spot on the calendar and will put his affinity for national opens to the test. Driving the golf ball perhaps as well as ever, McIlroy can thank an uptick in his iron play for his uptick in hardware. While he did not break his decade-long major championship drought at Valhalla, he performed adequately and should be in the mix late on Sunday.
• Tommy Fleetwood (16-1): It is not a matter of "if" but "when" Fleetwood will breakthrough for his long-awaited win on the PGA Tour. Last year's tournament had all the makings of it as the Englishman stood on the tee on the accessible par-5 18th needing birdie to secure victory in regulation. Unable to succeed, Fleetwood fell short once again and will try to make amends this week following a string of mixed results highlighted by a podium finish at the Masters and top-15 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship.
• Corey Conners (20-1): The top Canadian on the board is doing everything we expect from Conners. One of the most accurate drivers on the PGA Tour and a lethal approach player, the 32-year-old is in need of a massive week with his short game if he is to contend. After missing five cuts across his first six Canadian Opens, Conner has found his footing in his home country's open with a sixth-place finish in 2022 and top 20 last year.
• Sahith Theegala (20-1)
• Shane Lowry (22-1): It has been a memorable month for Lowry as he snatched his first PGA Tour victory since his Open triumph and added to major championship record books with his third-round 63 at the PGA Championship. Contending at Valhalla, the Irishman leaned on an unusually hot putter and could be a sign of things to come this summer. He ranks third in this field in strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained approach over the last six months.
• Sam Burns (22-1)
• Cameron Young (22-1)
• Alex Noren (22-1): The former top-10 player in the world is quietly playing some of the best golf on the PGA Tour. It has been nearly three months since Noren has finished outside the top 25 on a leaderboard highlighted by a podium result at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and T12 finish at the PGA Championship in his last start out. He is doing just about everything right as he ranks third in total strokes gained over the last six months.
