Things To Do

Things to do | review: in lady gaga’s sold-out show at wrigley field, every song was a larger-than-life experience.

Author

Gaga has had plenty of time to strategize. The pandemic derailed the singer’s originally scheduled 2020 date at the Friendly Confines; she postponed her rescheduled 2021 outing for related reasons. Those hiccups followed Gaga’s prior tour in 2018, where chronic pain triggered by fibromyalgia prompted her to cancel several gigs.

Not that she’s been out of the spotlight. Amid an acclaimed Las Vegas residency that commenced in 2018, Gaga released her fifth solo studio album, “Chromatica,” which dominated Monday’s set. She also delivered the national anthem at President Joe Biden’s inauguration; re-teamed with legendary crooner Tony Bennett for a second collaborative LP and several television performances; starred in the film “House of Gucci”; and contributed the theme song and co-composed the score to “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Gaga approached every moment at Wrigley with a similar blend of breathless energy and boundless passion. Billed as “the Chromatica Ball” tour — a concept taken to heart by countless fans who showed up dressed in a colorful array of leather, mesh, wigs, heels, glitter and more — the event seemingly aimed to redefine what a stadium concert could be. To ensure every song doubled as its own experience, Gaga enlisted plenty of help.

An incredible sound system, revolving platform, large second stage, high-def screens, enormous flame plumes and prerecorded interlude videos complemented an entourage of skilled dancers, choreographed routines and Gaga’s now-trademark outrageous costumes. Another equally important detail that all major pop artists should heed but frequently forsake: a versatile backing band.

Exploring plight and joy, the theatrical 130-minute show began on a stage informed by brutalist architecture and video footage drenched with blacks, grays and whites. The noir-inspired setting extended to shadowy illumination and a coffin-like, body-enshrouding contraption that initially prevented Gaga from moving everything but her head and arms. It became the first restraint of many that yielded to her vibrant dance moves and dynamic persona.

Gaga exuded bigger-than-life confidence yet repeatedly exhibited generous degrees of sincerity and humility. She interjected spontaneous remarks into verses and choruses at will and, on other occasions, framed songs by recalling history or poking fun at a past version of herself. Though it avoided politics and acknowledged divisions, much of her commentary addressed several main tenets: hope, agreement, courage and love.

Gaga also made a range of brief, subtle homages to other artists. The synth grooves, mechanical hooks and austere motions in “Poker Face” nodded to Annie Lennox during her tenure with the Eurythmics. Donned toward the climax of “Monster,” and used in combination with the zombie motifs of the dance routine and lyrics, an oversized red jacket acknowledged “Thriller”-era Michael Jackson. The pulsating strut, sung-spoken deliveries and power-suit looks flaunted on “Babylon” saluted “Vogue”-period Madonna. When she flashed the sign of the horns on both hands, rolled back her head and stuck out her tongue at the conclusion of “Shallow,” Gaga evoked Kiss bassist Gene Simmons.

Standing on a piano bench while arched forward to reach the keys on “Fun Tonight”? Elton John would be proud. Ditto Bruce Springsteen if the Boss witnessed her collapse on her back on the stage floor from feigned exhaustion before finding a sixth gear to belt out a club banger.

Through it all, Gaga remained thoroughly herself: a brilliant performer with a singular identity whose music, lyrics and imagery conveyed universal messages. As she advanced from the dark into the light — enduring various struggles, opening up to vulnerability, embracing independence, daring to be herself and ultimately finding catharsis — it all circled back to a question Gaga posed midway through the event: “Have you ever had to battle for your life?”

One needn’t have asked the same of Gaga; the answer was obvious by way of the feeling and intensity she invested in each note and step. Her blonde hair slicked back, lips painted scarlet red and eyelids framed by a makeup design that resembled butterfly wings, Gaga sang most of the hard-edge “Alice” lying prone on an elevated slab and wearing a collar adorned with nails. That desperation transitioned into pain on the aggressive “Replay,” for which she wore a transparent body suit that appeared smeared with blood — all the better to match the scars and torture described in the song.

When she discovered it, Gaga treated escapism with a related purpose. “LoveGame” featured disco beats that matched the teasing playfulness of the lyrics and grinding guitars that transformed the tune into a hybrid of dance-pop and heavy metal. For the uplifting “Free Woman,” Gaga relied on a formerly underground Chicago creation — house music — and promptly brought intimacy to a stadium environment by slowly parading through the crowd en route to the second stage. Once there, and at a piano, she proved a force of nature.

Allowing her jazz instincts to take control, she effortlessly improvised melodic lines and changed up phrasing. Stripped of accompaniment, Gaga communicated with conviction and naked sensitivity. Grit formed on her lower register; her falsetto traveled to beautiful regions. She handled soaring passages as proficiently as strains that demanded delicacy and restraint.

As she probed and retraced the contours of familiar songs, balladic renditions of “Always Remember Us This Way” and “The Edge of Glory” exposed another facet of Gaga: that of a gospel singer in hiding.

Is there any kind of music Gaga cannot conquer? She’s born that way, indeed.

Lady Gaga pulls out all the fabulously bizarre pop stops at Wrigley Field

It was her second time playing the ballpark, though a far cry from the vibe of 2017’s joanne world tour performance..

Hollywood may have borrowed her for a while, but music has its leading lady back. And after a four-year break, Lady Gaga is showing how a pop star is reborn, in this case via The Chromatica Ball tour.

The limited trek — just 12 cities in North America — is in support of her 2020 “Chromatica” album that marked a successful return to Gaga’s dance-pop foundation and her beautifully bizarre aesthetic that turned a lot of heads early in her career.

The Ball, “not a tour,” as Gaga explained, arrived in the form of a very sold-out concert on Monday night at Wrigley Field, where any extra space was taken up by a Comic-Con level of winged/spiked/sparkled costumes that paid homage to the many eras of the 36-year-old Gaga.

It was in fact her second time playing the ballpark, though a far cry from the vibe of 2017’s Joanne World Tour performance, that occasion notable for being the first time a woman headlined the stadium — and for presenting a stripped-down mirage of the artist who once made headlines for wearing a meat dress.

Those subtleties were all gone on this night, in favor of cosplay, fetishism, alien-esque neofuturism, Dada theatrics and a flipbook of highly-produced video vignettes.

Announcing The Chromatica Ball back in 2020, Gaga originally explained the creative direction as a combo of art, fashion, dance, music, technology and poetry “and the way all those things work together.” Keeping her word, those cogs moved in unison with a Herculean effort of costuming, choreography, lighting and set design that will go down as one of her career best.

The two-hour spectacle was broken into five easily digestible acts, each ending with an interlude that was an intentional moment to focus on her incredible dancers and backing musicians, not the least of which was keyboardist Brockett Parsons and his amazing 360-degree piano arc invention.

The night started with a teaser black-and-white featurette padded with Rorschach Test synapses and a Tesla Coil reaction that alluded to the high-voltage experience about to come. Gaga soon entered wearing her first costume, a granite statue-like affair, eventually breaking free from the cocoon-like garb to jump into a mini greatest hits of “Bad Romance,” “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.”

Each segment that followed was even more of a revolving art project that kept taking darker turns, in lockstep with the difficult headspace Gaga has talked about being in while making “Chromatica.”

Act I seemingly took cues from “Jesus Christ Superstar” and Gaga’s time in the “American Horror Story” franchise (and was a great promo for her Haus Labs makeup line). Act II’s pleather-palooza could be best described as a Grace Jones - Rob Halford co-headlining tour. Act III was Gaga’s Babylonian golden goddess moment. And Act V, the finale, was all rough-and-tumble rocker, ending with Gaga on her knees in front of a plume of flames that really makes you wish she’d someday explore her heavy-metal leanings.

But it was Act IV that was perhaps the most evocative. For this segment, Gaga walked down a makeshift roped-off runway in the outfield to ascend to a second stage in center field where a gnarly piano looking like a design of Guillermo del Toro awaited her.

For six songs, Gaga finally sat still long enough for her impeccable vocals to shine, her classical training coming through on a pared down “Born This Way” (dedicated to the ”brave” Pastor Carl Bean who wrote a song of the same name), “Shallow,” “The Edge of Glory” and a demure “1000 Doves.”

The latter is a club hit from her “Chromatica” album, but on this night, Gaga played it bare for the audience to “hear it like I wrote it.” She explained the song came to her while she was sitting on her porch in a bout of depression, chain-smoking cigarettes and crying about life.

That’s the beauty about Gaga. Her authentic human connection precedes any of her made-up characters. No matter what otherworldly getup she might don next, it’s really to tell her fans they, too, can be anything they want to be.

On this night she had one additional message to share, asking people to put aside their differences and come together for each other while also using her platform to talk about keeping women safe. And then she ended the show with one bit of positivity. “Don’t give up, keep going and believe in yourself,” she said. “We’re going to figure this s*** out.”

Seeing all the dates that close together is giving me slight JWT cancellation ptsd but I hope and pray that she doesn't have to cancel any shows this time around. I also PRAY to god that she/her team decide to film this show even if it's just footage used from the screens mashed together from the fifteen dates to create a cohesive film.

For rescheduled shows in Paris, London, Toronto, East Rutherford, Chicago and Boston, tickets are on sale now . Previously purchased tickets will remain valid for these shows.

The tour is promoting Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album “Chromatica,” which was released in 2020 and faced a press cycle silenced by COVID. At the time of the album’s release, Variety ‘s Jem Aswad celebrated the work as one of her best albums yet.

“Even though nearly every song on ‘Chromatica’ has a four-on-the-floor, butt-thumping beat, the songs themselves are remarkably varied in many other ways,” he wrote. “It’s pure, joyous dancefloor pop — the acoustic instruments and country flourishes of ‘Joanne’ and ‘A Star Is Born’ are nowhere in sight; there isn’t even much piano — but with a melodic sophistication and emotional depth that her more recent songs have lacked.”

Lady Gaga Unveils Fiery Trailer for ‘Chromatica’ Ball Concert Film

The Chromatica Ball, Lady Gaga ‘s most recent stadium tour, fought against numerous obstacles before it was able to fully bloom in 2022. The run was postponed twice — first when the world shut down during the pandemic in 2020, then again when only certain stops on the international run were prepared for the return of live music in 2021. When the Ball finally commenced, Gaga leaned into her biggest and weirdest musical modes. She also captured an entire sold-out show on film for the HBO Original Concert Special Gaga Chromatica Ball .

Premiering on HBO on May 25 at 8 p.m. EST, the concert film captures Gaga’s September 2022 performance at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The stadium welcomed 52,000 people to the event, all there to witness the crown jewel of pop spectacle. In the first trailer for the special, the musician performs Chromatica ‘s lead single “Stupid Love” and her seminal single “Born This Way” against a dramatic stage backdrop.

Lady Gaga ’s Chromatica Ball world tour is in full swing! After being postponed twice, Mother Monster’s highly anticipated tour launched in Germany in July and will roll into Toronto this weekend, followed by Washington, D.C., on Aug. 8 and Gaga’s hometown of New York City on Aug. 11.

See latest videos, charts and news

First announced in 2020, the tour was pushed back two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and fans have been showing up in droves to rock out with the Oscar winner and 13-time Grammy winner. The tour has already raked in more than $80 million , and many of the tickets, both overseas and Stateside, have already sold out.

Joe Biden vs. Donald Trump: How to Watch the 2024 Presidential Debate

“Europe is over 88% sold with 70,000 tickets sold in Paris, 76,000 in London and opener in Düsseldorf, Germany, completely sold out,” Arthur Fogel, president of global touring and chairman for concerts at Live Nation, told Billboard . “Toronto is sold out, New York is basically sold out, Wrigley Field is sold out. Tokyo’s two shows at the Tokyo Dome are sold out — it’s amazing.”

Tickets to the tour are available on Ticketmaster , StubHub , Vivid Seats , SeatGeek (and Gaga’s website) . Passes start at around $56-$110, depending on the ticketing outlet.

Trending on Billboard

Gaga explained the concept behind the Chromatica Ball, which is named after her sixth studio album released in 2020, in a video posted to Instagram last month.

“I wanted to tell a story with abstractions and art,” Gaga shared in an emotional message to fans after the first night of the tour. “This show celebrates things that I have always loved: art, fashion, dance, music, technology, poetry and the way all of those things work together. Everybody has worked so hard on this show, and we love you so much. We’re so grateful.”

“I want to allow you all to interpret this show in the way that you want to, but I will say it really documents the many different stages and sides of grief and the manic energy of grief that I feel like I’ve experience in my life,” she continued. “I really want to thank you for sticking it out with me and loving me through all the different iterations of my artistry as well as me as a person. I feel more clear today than I have in a long time and more pain free than I have in ages. And being free of pain on stage is a real healing experience because I’m able to dance and sing and enjoy the audience, enjoy the show, and really tell a story.”

The Chromatica Ball is scheduled to wrap on Sept. 17 in Miami.

Freak out! Lady Gaga announces Chromatica Ball world tour

Gaga will play stadiums around the globe in support of her new album.

chromatica ball tour sold out

Freak out, freak out, freak out, freak out, Little Monsters, because Lady Gaga is blasting off on another world tour.

Mother Monster announced Thursday her six-city Chromatica Ball world tour , which kicks off this summer in support of her upcoming sixth studio album and its lead single, "Stupid Love."

Beginning in July, Gaga will play six stadiums around the globe, including stops in Paris, London, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, and the New York City area.

The Chromatica Ball marks Gaga's first traveling concert since 2017's Joanne world tour , which the 33-year-old cut short in early 2018 after battling with chronic pain related to fibromyalgia. She later made her Las Vegas debut with the Enigma and Jazz and Piano residency shows, and adapted the former in February for her one-off Super Saturday Night performance in Miami ahead of Super Bowl LIV.

Ahead of the tour, Gaga will drop the tour's parent album, Chromatica , on April 10, just over a month after she dropped her dance-pop comeback single "Stupid Love." In a recent interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Gaga suggested the album — which contains production from her Joanne collaborator BloodPop, French DJ Tchami, and superstar producer Max Martin — will have fans "dancing" across a body of work that "healed" her and reflects her varied worldview as diverse as the chromatic scale in music.

"I put all of my heart, all my pain, all of my messages from the other realm and what they tell me to tell the world, I put it into music that I believe to be so fun and, energetically, really pure," Gaga said of the LP . "I want people to dance and feel really happy. Someone asked me the other day what my goal was with this album... I said, 'I'd like to put out music that a big chunk of the world will hear and it will become a part of their daily lives and make them happy every single day."

Read on for a full list of Chromatica Ball tour dates. Tickets for the international dates go on sale beginning March 13, with domestic dates starting March 16. Fans and Citi cardholders can register for presale access on Gaga's website .

It’s an exciting time for Gaga, whose iconic hit “Poker Face” recently reached a major milestone: its music video reached one billion views on YouTube.

The now-classic Lady Gaga hit came out in 2008, and marked the second single off her debut album The Fame . It followed the release of “Just Dance,” Gaga’s very first single that catapulted the one-of-a-kind artist to stardom. At the time, Gaga made history with the popularity of “Poker Face,” becoming the fourth female artist in the past two decades to make her debut with two back-to-back No.1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She also became the first artist with two singles to sell for over $7 million in downloads.

A lot has changed since the world was introduced to “Poker Face.” Gaga has released five studio albums, with’s Chromatica being her latest. She also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song with “Shallow” from A Star Is Born in 2019 and received a nomination for Best Actress for the film as well.

"Just Dance" because Lady Gaga is going on tour again!

Live Nation announced on Monday that Lady Gaga 's The Chromatica Ball's new tour dates are confirmed — and more cities have been added to the stadium tour!

The tour dates were originally postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and now rescheduled, Gaga, 35, added eight new shows.

The stadium tour, in support of Gaga's 2020 album Chromatica , is set to kick off in Denmark in July and will end in September in Los Angeles.

Tickets for previously scheduled shows in Paris, London, Toronto, East Rutherford, Chicago and Boston are on sale now, while tickets for the new dates will go on sale on March 14 on Ticketmaster.

For shows in the U.S., $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the Born This Way Foundation . The foundation was founded by the star and her mother in 2012 and is committed to supporting the wellness of young people and working with them to build a "kinder and braver world."

Gaga originally postponed the tour in June 2020 — and at the time, shared a message with her fans.

"We've been working hard to figure out the safest and soonest way to bring this show to you, but most importantly want everyone to be healthy and able to dance together at the shows as we always have," Gaga tweeted of the postponement.

Meanwhile, in May 2020 when she released the album, she rang in the occasion with an at-home dance party with her manager Bobby Campbell.

The singer also reflected on her dance party song, "911" during a candid chat with Zane Lowe on Apple Music one week before the release, sharing that it is "about an antipsychotic that I take." The star also revealed in the interview that she "flirted with the idea of sobriety" while recording the highly anticipated record.

"I don't take any pain medication, because it's not healthy for me. But I've flirted with the idea of sobriety. I'm not there yet, but I flirted with it throughout the album," she shared. "It's something that came up as a result of me trying to work through the pain that I was feeling."

"But part of my healing process was going, 'Well, I can either lash the hell out of myself every day for continuing to drink, or I can just be happy that I'm still alive and keep going,' and feel good enough," Gaga continued. "I am good enough. It's not perfect, but wabi-sabi. I'm perfectly imperfect.'"

Since Chromatica , Gaga released Dawn of Chromatica , a remix album of the original featuring musicians like Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama on Sept. 3. She also released Love for Sale with icon Tony Bennett, a Cole Porter tribute album on Sept. 30.

Most recently, Gaga has also been focused on her acting career since the release of House of Gucci in November. Though she did not receive a nomination in the Best Actress category for her performance at the Oscars — despite her nominations at the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA Awards — she was named a presenter for the awards ceremony last week.

House of Gucci was nominated , however, for Best Makeup & Hairstyling, highlighting the work done by Göran Lundström, AnnaCarin Lock and Frederic Aspiras. She celebrated the nod and congratulated all the other nominees on Instagram .

Gaga was previously Oscar-nominated for Best Actress for A Star Is Born and Best Original Song for "Til It Happens To You" from the documentary The Hunting Ground . She won Best Original Song for A Star Is Born 's "Shallow."

Lady Gaga shares first look at her Chromatica Ball HBO concert special

Nearly two year after embarking on her last world tour, Lady Gaga is bringing the experience to her 'Little Monsters' everywhere.

The Grammy Award winner, 38, shared the first look of her Chromatica Ball's HBO concert special on Wednesday ahead of the documentary's May 25 premiere.

'I’m so excited that we can finally share The Chromatica Ball film with the world,' she started in the caption. 'This film chronicles a time of immense creativity…the fashion, the dance, the music.

'Revisiting the tour leaves me speechless the way we had each other—you all showed up for music and art in a big way, and with a level of excitement and freedom that I will never forget. Stadium after stadium. Sold out crowds. The deafening singalongs,' wrote Gaga.

She described the tour as 'colorful revenge,' explaining: 'The chaos of it all became pure energy and life. With a texture best experienced live.'

Gaga went on to reference lyrics from her track 'Babylon', writing: 'STRUT IT OUT, WALK A MILE / SERVE IT ANCIENT CITY STYLE.'

'Self-acceptance is a theme that cuts through all my songs,' she wrote. 'I believe it is always possible to dig deep and find your greatness. Self-discovery is an art. Self-love is a practice.

'I love you monsters more than I can say. See yourself in every vocal, every fabric choice, the choreography, every image… Here’s the truth—no matter where life or my career has taken me, my time with you always is a path back to a very powerful part of myself.'

'In a stadium filled with YOU it came to life. Thank you for that feeling. I hope you will feel seen when you watch this film. And know that I edited it carefully to honor you,' Gaga concluded.

After releasing her seventh studio album Chromatica in 2020, the tour was postponed to 2022  amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kicking off in Düsseldorf, Germany on July 17, the tour included 20 shows across Europe, North America and Asia.

Gaga teased the concert special  after her Los Angeles show was filmed on September 10, 2022.

'52,000 people. Sold out. 30 cameras pointed at you and one take #monster #ChromaticaBallLA I LOVE YOU,' she wrote on Twitter at the time.

The Chromatica Ball broke several records, becoming Gaga's highest-grossing tour  since 2012's Born This Way Ball.

Gaga is preparing to drop a new album as she teased that she's ' writing some of my best music in as long as I can remember' while celebrating her 38th birthday in March.

The Academy Award winner is also reviving her Las Vegas residency Lady Gaga Jazz & Piano this summer for eight shows at Park MGM's Dolby Live.

Gaga Chromatica Ball premiers May 25 at 8 pm ET/PT on HBO, streaming afterward on Max.

Lana Del Rey plays ball despite weather delays at historic Fenway show

Under the circumstances, the set was palpably paced yet never rushed, as del rey reveled in drawing out her cool, signature coos.

Lana Del Rey performed her first headlining stadium performance Thursday night at Fenway Park.

Ten years ago, Lana Del Rey sold out Boston’s House of Blues — her first-ever tour date in the city — with hardly any effort. The sardine-packed performance confirmed that her notoriety as singer-songwriter had eclipsed her touring plans for 2014, leaving her already poised for a major stage upgrade. The New-York-born singer greeted fans outside of the venue that night wearing what now seems like a harbinger of her future success: a Red Sox hat. Because as it turns out, one of the larger stages she was destined for awaited her across Lansdowne Street.

On Thursday night Del Rey crossed a major career milestone at Fenway Park, locking in her first headlining stadium performance in the United States with a one-off (and sold-out) show at the historic ballpark. When she gushed onstage that seeing Fenway Park “full” was “an absolute dream,” it never felt like lip service — even if she only was able to perform a portion of her original set. Wind warnings and a nearby thunderstorm delayed Del Rey’s performance by two hours, and when forced to choose between trimming her concert or postponing it until Saturday, Del Rey decided to play ball despite a looming noise curfew.

When wind warnings and a nearby thunderstorm delayed her Fenway performance by two hours, Del Rey decided to play ball despite a looming noise curfew.

“I guess we’ll just cruise through as magically as we can with our curfew,” she told the crowd at the beginning of her set. “Cruise” is exactly what Del Rey did, casually clipping many songs short but never breaking her unperturbed demeanor. She optimized her sole hour onstage to satisfy fans from every era of her career, from the early devotees enamored with the trip-hop pulsing through “Born to Die,” to recent converts lured in by the lush offerings of “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.”

Under the circumstances, the set was palpably paced yet never rushed, as Del Rey reveled in drawing out her cool, signature coos on songs like “Pretty When You Cry” and “Chemtrails Over the Country Club.” Her unhurried harmonizing with backup singers on the intimate single “The Grants” in particular felt like a personal commitment to letting her ballads breathe.

She treated prearranged duets with equal sanctity, sharing the spotlight with a trio of guest performers despite her race against the clock. Intentionally or not, each musician highlighted Del Rey’s stylistic range that continues to nudge her closer to music-icon status: heartsick country from Mason Ramsey (of viral Walmart yodeling fame), soulful rockabilly with “Until I Found You” artist Stephen Sanchez, and poppy hip-hop alongside rapper Quavo, who teased an unreleased collaboration with Del Rey.

She closed the evening with the twinkling ballad “Video Games,” ending the set early with one of her most reliable and well-known tear-jerkers. It wasn’t the raucous finale found at most Fenway Park concerts; instead, Del Rey’s swift conclusion proved that home runs can be an act of pure grace.
