What our guests say.

We were very impressed with the services provided by Bhutan Travel Bureau. From our initial contact where we were provided with useful information to aid in planning our trip, to the quick replies and efficient rebooking of our flights and hotels when events outside of our control caused a change in schedule, they were always on top of everything. Once we started our tour, both our driver and guide were very professional, knowledgeable and capable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bhutan. It is a beautiful country with lovely people and an interesting culture. We were happy with our itinerary and the amount of time we spent in each city. Our guide, Carma, was excellent! We could not have asked for a better guide. He was friendly, polite, personable, patient, and accommodating to our wishes. He was extremely knowledgeable about Buddhism and Bhutanese culture. We learned a lot.

A wonderful 8 day exploration in September of Western Bhutan which exceeded all our expectations. There were four of us aged between 27 and 72, of varying fitness levels. The care that was taken of us by our guide Thinlay and driver Karma was fantastic, we were in very capable hands. They were patient, friendly and keen to make our trip memorable and interesting. The climb to the Tiger’s Nest on the last day was the climax of an unforgettable holiday. We’ll definitely be going back for another trip!

I was on a solo trip to Bhutan in Sept. 2019. I was a “difficult” customer in the sense that I had lots of special requirements. BTB´s guide dealt with them in a very efficient and friendly manner and I had a truly unique experience. I also appreciated the driver´s calm and solid ways, as the road conditions in Bhutan are sometimes bad. Before the trip, communications with BTB were smooth and fast. I can sincerely recommend BTB.

Our ten day tour with Bhutan Travel Bureau was fantastic. Thinley was an excellent guide who spoke perfect English and was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was very kind and helpful but also allowed us time on our own when needed. The car (a new Toyota) was very comfortable and had lots of space for luggage and pillows for the passengers. BTB was very helpful in tailoring a tour to our preferences and always went above and beyond when we had extra requests. Cannot recommend highly enough!

It is located on the other side of Paro River on the hilltop. It is one of the sightseeing places in Paro. You can visit while driving to Thimphu. The name Tachog literally means ‘Temple of the Hill of the Excellent Horse’. It was built by Thangtong Gyalp (1385-1464). He is aslo called as Iron bridge builder. 7 Days In Bhutan Travel Itinerary: Best Things To Do & See

Bhutan is a wonderful, secluded little country in the Himalayas. It’s definitely not the easiest country to visit, but it’s worth the effort if you’re looking for a really unique travel experience. I spent one week in Bhutan recently and enjoyed every moment.

Most people spend 5 to 7 days in Bhutan, and an itinerary like that gives you enough time to see many of the top highlights of the country, although you’ll still probably be sad to leave.

Bhutan is full of interesting culture and nature, and yet it’s pretty unspoiled by tourism. Even places that would normally be very crowded and touristy, like the Tiger’s Nest Monastery , still feel refreshingly authentic and personal.

In this travel blog, I’ll share my ideal Bhutan itinerary and some of the best things to do if you have one week in the country! This is basically the same itinerary I used in Bhutan, with a few improvements based on my experience.

Best Bhutan Tour Company

For most nationalities, the only way you can visit Bhutan is with a visa and tour organized by a local Bhutanese tour company. There’s also a daily tax of $100 USD per person, which is a rule established by the Bhutanese government to try to ensure ‘quality over quantity’ tourism.

I visited Bhutan with this tour company on GetYourGuide. It was a great experience, and I would happily recommend them to anyone! The owner of the company, Tsenrig, helped me craft the perfect 7-day Bhutan itinerary, with a visit to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery and lots of other great sights around the country of Bhutan.

Their most popular itineraries are 5 or 7 days , but they also have tours of 9 or 10 days , or even as long as 15 or 20 days. The itinerary is very flexible and you can choose the sights you most want to see on each day you spend in the country of Bhutan.

My private tour guide, L. Dorji, was fantastic and very helpful, staying at my side every step of the way. He even kindly insisted to carry my heavy backpack for me, and helped me swap between my camera lenses whenever I was taking pictures.

Dorji knew every detail about the history of Bhutan, and he’s been giving tours for decades. He was one of the best tour guides I’ve had anywhere in the world. Overall, I would highly recommend this company for your travel to Bhutan!

Bhutan Itinerary Day 1: Paro Acclimatization

Welcome to Bhutan! You’ll probably be tired after your flight to Paro. Start your itinerary with a low key visit to Ta Dzong, located just a 20 minute drive from the airport.

This odd looking cylindrical building is a 17th century watch tower that now serves as the national museum of Bhutan. Inside, there are Bhutanese paintings, statues, weapons, and other artifacts.

For me, the best part was seeing the outside and the view of the valley below.

• Paro Dzong

For most tourists, the Paro Dzong will be your first real experience with a Bhutanese fortress-monastery (called a ‘dzong’). These are kind of like the castles of Bhutan.

Also known as the Rinpung Dzong, this is the main fortress and monastery in Paro town, and it was built in the 17th century overlooking the river and valley. The name basically means “fortress of the heap of jewels.”

The outside walls are impressive, and so is the inside of the courtyard. Don’t miss the giant bee hives hanging from the windows!

You can walk through this fortress in just 30 minutes or so, but it’s well worth a visit! The best photo spot is on the path leading to it.

The 17th century Rinpung Dzong in Paro

• Kyichu Lhakhang

Kyichu Lhakhang is a small Buddhist temple that dates back to the 7th century, making it one of the oldest temples in Bhutan.

This one is just a 10 minute drive north of Paro town, so it’s easy to visit even if you’re short on time.

• Archery Match

Archery has been the national game of Bhutan since 1971, and the locals are always practicing their skills with a bow and arrow. It’s fun to watch an archery match and some of these guys are really skilled.

I decided to skip this since I was exhausted and wanted to save energy for other things, but I still got to witness some archery matches from a distance later on when we were driving around the countryside of Bhutan.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to see archery while you’re traveling in Bhutan.

• Paro Town

If you still have energy, you can spend the rest of the day roaming around Paro town and shopping for souvenirs. There are lots of shops on the main street and they have a good selection of Bhutanese crafts, plus the usual shirts and fridge magnets, and other items for sale.

• Overnight In Paro

Stay overnight in Paro, which has an altitude of about 2,200 meters (7,200 ft). I stayed at Hotel Olathang, which is a historic 3-star hotel on a hill, surrounded by pine forests and overlooking the Paro valley. It was a little dated, but the location is nice.

Bhutan Itinerary Day 2: Thimphu

• drive to thimphu.

After breakfast, you’ll drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Even though the distance from Paro to Thimphu is only 45 kilometers, the drive takes 60-90 minutes because of the winding mountain roads.

Along the way, you’ll pass another monastery across the river called Tachog Lhakhang, as well as an old iron suspension bridge. Your guide can make a quick stop to let you take some photos of it before continuing to Thimphu.

• Taschichho Dzong

The Tashichho Dzong is a giant fortress-monastery that also serves as the seat of the government in Thimphu.

I was lucky to visit Bhutan during the annual Tshechu festival, which is usually held in Thimphu in late September or early October, so I was able to watch the mask dance here, together with thousands of locals wearing their colorful national clothes.

It was pretty fascinating, and I consider it one of the highlights of my trip to Bhutan!

• Cheri Monastery

The Cheri monastery hike is a nice little excursion into the forest near Thimphu, where you can see some wildlife and a 17th century monastery on the hillside.

This hike takes about 45-60 minutes going up, depending on your pace, and a bit less going down. Most of it is uphill, but it’s not as hard as the famous Tiger’s Nest hike , so most people won’t have any problem with it.

We saw birds, mountain goats, and langur monkeys here. My guide told me you could sometimes hear tigers roaring in the distance during the 1980s, and they still occasionally see Himalayan black bears in this area since it’s on the edge of the Jigme Dorji National Park.

• Overnight In Thimphu

Stay overnight in Thimphu, which has an altitude of about 2,300 meters (7,500 ft). I stayed at a 3-star hotel called Kisa Villa, which has a garden and close up views of the Taschichho Dzong. You can even see the dzong lit up at night.

Bhutan Itinerary Day 3: Gangtey Valley

• dochula pass & drukwangyel.

Day three begins with the drive from Thimphu to Phobjikha. This takes about 3 hours because of the usual zigzag roads of Bhutan, but there’s lots of great scenery to enjoy along the way.

After about 45 minutes of driving, you’ll stop at Dochula Pass, a high mountain pass with an altitude of 3,150 meters (10,335 feet). Morning is the best time to come here.

On a clear day, you can get some great views of the snow capped Himalayan mountains in the distance. One of these is Gangkhar Puensum, the highest mountain in Bhutan and the highest unclimbed mountain in the world!

There’s also a monastery at Dochula Pass with 108 stupas, which were built to commemorate 100 years of monarchy in Bhutan. The weather was cloudy when I went, but we were still able to catch some glimpses of the mountains in the distance.

Dochula Pass Drukwangyel Temple

• Gangtey Monastery

After more driving, you’ll reach Phobjikha and visit the Gangtey Monastery, a colorful 17th century building that overlooks the valley.

When I visited, the place was packed with locals and they were practicing their dance moves for another upcoming festival.

• Kwewa Village Nature Trail

From the Gangtey monastery, there’s a nice little point-to-point nature trail that goes down the hill, through the forest, and across the valley of Phobjikha.

Most of this hike is mild and easy, but it takes about 1 hour or more to reach the end of the trail, where your driver will be waiting for you and your guide.

You can see horses in the valley, and black necked cranes also migrate here during the months of November to February.

Phobjikha Valley

Phobjikha valley

• Black Necked Crane Center

After seeing the Phobjikha valley, you have the option to visit an information center for the black necked cranes that tells more about the birds, and they also have telescopes for bird watching.

I decided to skip this and rest at the hotel, since the black necked cranes were out of season when I visited in September.

• Overnight In Phobjikha

Stay overnight in the Phobjikha valley, which has an altitude of about 3,000 meters (9,800 ft). This is the highest place you’ll stay in this Bhutan itinerary.

I was expecting the hotel here to be a little rough since it’s a more remote location, but actually it was very comfortable. I stayed at the 3-star Gakiling Guest House, which had nice views of the valley, fast WiFi, good food, and friendly staff.

Bhutan Itinerary Day 4: Punakha & Wangdue

• punakha dzong.

After breakfast, it’s time for the 2 hour drive from Phobjikha to Punakha, which will start to take you back west again, in the same direction you came from earlier.

The first place to visit in Punakha is the Punakha Dzong, which is one of the oldest and biggest fortresses in Bhutan. The view from across the Mo Chu river is an iconic photo of Bhutan.

You can go inside this dzong and wander the courtyard. There are lots of nice details on the inside, including an impressive gold door. Overall, I’d say it’s the best dzong I visited in Bhutan.

The altitude in Punakha is only roughly 1,200 meters (about 4,000 feet), so it’s a lot lower than the other places you’ve visited in Bhutan so far. That also means it’s warmer, so you may want to dress lighter here.

When I visited Punakha in September, I was hot even without a jacket! I felt like swimming in the river to escape the heat.

Punakha Dzong River

The iconic view of Punakha Dzong across the river

• Chimi Lhakhang

The Chimi Lhakhang is probably one of the oddest temples in Bhutan. It’s a fertility temple with phalluses and other sexual symbols, established by the ‘divine madman’ in the 15th century.

Childless couples often come here to pray for a child, and when you go inside the temple, they even have a bizarre tradition where they bop you on the head with a wooden phallus as a blessing.

The temple is set on a hill, so in order to reach it you have to do a mini trek up the hill for about 15 to 30 minutes, making it a bit harder to access than some of the other temples in Bhutan.

Chimi Lhakhang

Chimi Lhakhang

• Pho Chu River Bridge

One of the best sights in the Punakha area is the bridge over the Pho Chu river, which is actually known as the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan!

You can walk across the entire 200 meter bridge to the other side, and it has wonderful views of the valley and the turquoise glacier water of the Pho Chu river.

• Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

My favorite view in the Punakha area was on our last stop of the day, when we hiked up to a stupa in the mountains. The name of this one is hard to say: Khamsum Yulley Namgyal.

Hiking to this spot takes about 1 hour, and it’s all uphill. Along the way, you get some amazing views of the rice terraces and the Punakha valley. The top has a 30 meter tall stupa and great views of the mountains.

If you’re reasonably fit and don’t mind a bit of hiking, this spot should definitely be on your Bhutan itinerary. It’s one of the best things to do in the country!

• Overnight In Punakha

Stay overnight in Punakha, which has an altitude of about 1,200 meters (4,000 ft). I stayed at a new hotel called Divine Heritage House, which had lots of windows so you could enjoy the views of the rice terraces.

Bhutan Itinerary Day 5: Revisiting Thimphu

• buddha dordenma.

After breakfast, retrace your route back to Thimphu by driving over the Dochula Pass again. The drive will take a total of about 2 hours from Punakha to Thimphu. Welcome back to the capital!

Start your fifth day of sightseeing in Bhutan with a visit to the giant golden Buddha statue on the hill overlooking Thimphu valley. It’s one of the famous icons of Bhutan.

The Buddha Dordenma statue, as it’s called, is also one of the biggest Buddha statues in the world, with a height of 52 meters (169 feet). At a cost of more than $100 million USD, it was built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Bhutan’s fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

• Sangay-gang Viewpoint

En route to the Takin Preserve, make a quick stop at the Sangay-gang viewpoint for a good picture of Thimphu city from above.

After a 20 minute drive up the mountain, you can see the entire city of Thimphu below you, and there are some nature trails here if you want to explore a bit longer.

• Motithang Royal Takin Preserve

The Takin (pronounced ‘tah-kin’) is the national animal of Bhutan. Before my trip, I didn’t even know these animals exist! They look kind of like a cross between a goat and a buffalo.

The Takin Preserve near Thimphu is home to almost two dozen takins, plus a few sambar and barking deer. There’s a metal walkway that runs along the outside of the sanctuary, so you can get a good view of the animals and easily take pictures.

The Takin is a protected animal in Bhutan, and they’re not seen very often in the wild except in places like Jigme Dorji National Park. The Takin preserve allows you to photograph them from a fairly close distance, while still giving them space to roam around and be themselves.

• National Memorial Stupa

After the Takin Preserve, we made a quick stop at the National Memorial Stupa, which is located in the center of Thimphu city.

This white stupa was built in 1974 to honor the third king of Bhutan, and elderly Buddhist believers come here to circumambulate (walk around the stupa) in a clockwise direction while praying.

• Zorig Chusum Arts & Crafts School

Zorig Chusum is a school in Thimphu where young people in Bhutan learn how to make traditional arts and crafts. This includes things like calligraphy, painting, carving, sculpting, textiles, and more.

There’s nothing for sale here, but you can watch the students working and training, which is interesting to see. Each room has a different art being practiced, and some of their designs are very good.

Zorig Chusum Arts Crafts School

You can see all kinds of arts and crafts at the Zorig Chusum school in Thimphu

• Farmer’s Market

Our last stop of the day was at the farmer’s market in Thimphu, where we saw all kinds of fruits and vegetables for sale.

There was quite a selection and it was fun to walk through all the aisles and look at everything, even though I didn’t buy. Chili peppers were everywhere since they’re such an important ingredient in Bhutanese food.

There were even some of the more exotic fruits for sale, like dragonfruit, which I didn’t expect to see in a mountain country like Bhutan.

Stay overnight in Thimphu once again. I was happy to be back at the familiar Kisa Villa, enjoying the good food and nice views of the Thimphu fortress from my window.

Bhutan Itinerary Day 6: Tiger’s Nest Monastery

• drive to paro.

It’s your sixth day in Bhutan, and that means it’s time to head back to the town of Paro where you started. After breakfast, you’ll drive approximately 1.5 hours to Paro and then a short distance past Paro to do the hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

• Tiger’s Nest Hike

It’s finally time for the grand finale of your Bhutan itinerary: the Tiger’s Nest Monastery !

A lot of tours in Bhutan save this for the end of the trip because it’s such a special place, and also because it gives you more time to become acclimated to altitude before attempting the hike.

The Tiger’s Nest Monastery is an amazing 17th century building that clings to the side of a steep 900 meter cliff. It almost looks unreal.

This is easily the most famous and photogenic place in Bhutan, and I consider it one of the most amazing day hikes anywhere in the world.

Tigers Nest Monastery Hike Paro Taktsang Bhutan Travel Itinerary 7 Days Best Things To Do

The famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery

You will need to spend a full day visiting the Tiger’s Nest since the hike takes about 4 to 8 hours, not including the time spent taking photos and touring the inside of the temple.

You can have lunch at the halfway point of the hike, where there’s a cafeteria with great views of the mountain. The whole experience is awesome.

The hike is a bit challenging, but most people of average fitness won’t have a problem with it. I wrote a complete guide for the Tiger’s Nest hike, which you can read in the link below.

• Bhutanese Cooking Class (Optional)

In the evening, if you’re interested, you can join a Bhutanese cooking class and learn how to make local dishes like Ema Datshi, Kewa Datshi, and Jasha Maru at a farmer’s house.

• Hot Stone Bath (Optional)

Another activity I was offered at the end of the day is a hot stone bath, where rocks from the river are heated up over a fire and then put in a wooden tub with herbs.

It’s a good way to relax and unwind at the end of your Bhutan trip, especially after hiking to the Tiger’s Nest earlier in the day.

Spend your last night in Bhutan back in Paro, relaxing and soaking up the views at Hotel Olathang. This location was one of my favorites.

Bhutan Itinerary Day 7: Paro Farewell

• dzongdrakha monastery (optional).

It’s your last day in Bhutan. If you still have time and energy, you may want to do something extra before you leave. In my case, my flight back to Bangkok with Druk Air was at 4:20 PM, so that gave me a bit of extra time to use.

Another special place you can visit in the Paro area is the Dzongdrakha Monastery. This is a cliffside monastery similar to the Tiger’s Nest, although it’s a shorter and easier hike. Not as many tourists know about it, so you might have the place all to yourself.

Keep in mind the tour providers in Bhutan normally don’t include any activities like this on the last day of the trip, so there may be an extra charge to add it to your itinerary.

• Go To Airport

After a wonderful 7 days in Bhutan, my driver and guide brought me to the airport, and it was time to say goodbye. Bhutan was a special experience and I was sad to leave.

5 Days In Bhutan Itinerary

If you’re not able to spend a full 7 days in Bhutan, a 5 day itinerary can be a good compromise, and it still allows you to see some of the highlights of the country.

Here’s what a good 5 day itinerary for Bhutan could look like:

  • Day 1. Paro acclimatization. Visit the Ta Dzong and Paro Dzong. Watch an archery match and then explore Paro town and shop for souvenirs.
  • Day 2. Paro to Thimphu. On the drive to Thimphu, see the Tamchog Lhakhang monastery and suspension bridge from a distance. Once you reach Thimphu, visit the National Memorial Stupa, the Buddha Dordenma statue, and the Tashichho Dzong, plus the farmer’s market and any other sights that interest you in Thimphu city.
  • Day 3. Thimphu to Punakha. On the drive to Punakha, stop at the Dochula Pass and visit Drukwangyel monastery for views of the Himalayan mountains. Then in Punakha, visit the Punakha Dzong, the Pho Chu river bridge, Chimi Lhakhang, and the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal.
  • Day 4. Punakha to Paro. Drive back to Paro where you started, and hike up to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. If you still have time afterwards, visit Kyichu Lhakhang and then enjoy a hot stone bath in the evening.
  • Day 5. Leave Bhutan. No sightseeing activities on this day unless you have extra time available.

Isolated yet unforgettable

For much of the 20th century, the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan was all but forgotten by the world; indeed, in a country where television has only been allowed since 1999, the modern age passed much of Bhutan by. A land of deep valleys and dzong (fortresses) perched on precarious peaks, it is one of the most isolated and least developed nations in the world. Its continued isolation is no longer an accident: Bhutan's traditional culture is strictly protected and visitors carefully regulated. In the only country in the world where tobacco sales are banned and the capital has no traffic lights, the opportunity to experience a place time forgot isn't a vacation, it's a privilege.

Bhutan Tours promptly addressed our questions, setting them apart from all the other travel agents. The trip itself exceeded our expectations. Our guide was highly knowledgeable, and the driver's skills were simply astounding. During our journey, we were fortunate to meet the owner of Go Bhutan Tours, a truly wonderful person. David Tolson & His Friend

Our Bhutan trip was one of the greatest and most unforgettable experiences of our lives! Go Bhutan Tours is very well organized with professional and friendly staff, communicates effectively, and takes our wishes into account. We experienced and truly felt the magic as well as spiritual vibes in monasteries. We learned about Buddhism and the royal family in Bhutan, and we immersed ourselves in Bhutanese culture through visits to villages, schools, and homestays. We had very interesting and honest discussions with our guide and driver. We thoroughly enjoyed discovering the authenticity of central and eastern Bhutan.

When we first started planning our trip to Bhutan, we were a bit overwhelmed. There were so many tour companies and itineraries to choose from. However, when we discovered Go Bhutan Tours, we felt like we were on the right track. One of the tour operators guided us through our plans with phone calls before our Bhutan trip and provided us with a thorough and clear travel guide, itineraries, as well as easy-to-understand cost breakdowns and comparisons. Once we arrived, our guide took us out to dinner and checked in with us regularly. The driver couldn't have been kinder and more accommodating. We managed to cover everything on our agenda and even more. Thank you so much!

Transporation in Bhutan

Transportation

Go Bhutan Tours uses local transportation alternatives and conventional modes of transportation whenever possible because they typically have less of an impact on the environment, help small local businesses, and are far more enjoyable. The type of excursion you choose while on a Bhutan tour package will determine how you get there. Minibus: Due to the weather, a lack of paved roads, and limited public transportation choices, traveling around Bhutan can be challenging. So plan on taking a minibus while you're not hiking.

Bhutan Culture and Custom

Culture & Custom

Embark on a journey to explore the fascinating culture and customs of Bhutan with "Go Bhutan Tours." Beyond the awe-inspiring Himalayas lies a land where tradition and modernization harmoniously coexist. Bhutan's unique allure has enticed a growing number of travelers since it opened its doors in 1974, welcoming over 200,000 visitors.

The enchantment of Bhutan is evident in its alpine landscapes, mesmerizing Buddhist architecture, and its enigmatic ambiance. It's a place where Gross National Happiness (GNH) takes precedence over GDP, emphasizing the well-being of its people. Bhutan holds the distinction of being the only nation on Earth with a net negative carbon footprint, a testament to its commitment to preserving the environment, influenced by its Buddhist heritage, which makes up nearly 75% of the population.

In Bhutan, the term that resonates most profoundly is "rich." This nation is rich in history, heritage, and customs, offering a wealth of cultural experiences. As Bhutan continues to evolve, there is a delicate balance to be struck between tradition and the rapid advancement of technology, a transition that will be fascinating to witness. Join our Bhutan Tours to delve into the heart of this rich culture and tradition, and explore the customs that make Bhutan truly unique.

eating and drinking in bhutan (1)

Eating & Drinking

The spicy food of Bhutan is renowned for knocking even the most traveler's socks off. If you prefer things spicy, you might just have reached heaven because most of it is garnished with chilies; but, for someone else, it will be pretty warm. Here are some dishes to watch out for a Bhutan vacation:

These cheese sauce-covered, extremely hot chillies are offered. It’s the traditional dish of Bhutan, where ema is the word for "chili" and datshi is the word for "cheese."

Phak sha pa

Red chile, onion, tomato, ginger, and radish slices are used to stew chopped pork.

The Bhutanese consume a lot of wheat, which is often reddish in hue. This is as a result of its cultivation in the rich Paro Valley soil. This one has a nutty taste and is frequently served with chili and mushrooms.

These Tibetan dumplings are typically served as a snack and are filled with meat, cheese, or veggies. Momos should never be refused.

Red Panda beer

The Bumthang Brewery, which is operated by a Swiss citizen who wed a Bhutanese, produces the famous Red Panda Weiss Beer of Bhutan. The sole export brewery in Bhutan is this one. There is a thin white foam on the beer, which has a murky yellow color. Residents and visitors alike adore this excellent beer.

Plan-based options

Vegetarians will have an easy time traveling to Bhutan because the country does not consume a meal of meat. Because cheese is frequently used in meals, vegans may find it more challenging. Make sure to specify that you want your meals cooked without dairy or margarine. Obviously, vacationing with a local makes everything much simpler. With Go Bhutan Tours, you'll get a local guide who can explain meals and suggest healthy plant-based options.

Best time for Bhutan tour and vacation

The most stunning moment to go on a Bhutan tour is the spring periods of mid-March to early May, when rhododendrons and other flowers are in blossom and the temperature has started to warm up, which are often cited as the ideal times to travel. Another great period is in the fall, from September through November, when the sky is predicted to be bright and the hills should be visible. It appears that March/April and September/October are the busiest carnival seasons.

wooden-mask-bhutan-shopping (1)

A Bhutan trip will satisfy your desire for high caliber handicrafts and vibrant art. Despite Bhutan's lack of a reputation as a premier shopping location, there are many skilled artists producing high-quality goods here. To be assured that you can carry particular things back into your place of origin, it is a great idea to verify with your local customs officers. General terms, the laws governing customs are rigorous in the US and Canada.

Hand-Woven Fabric

In Bhutan, artisanal spinning is at its very best. Visit one of the numerous textile shopping options in the towns of Bhutan to select from a wide variety of vibrant rugs, clothes, shawls, and decorations.

Traditional Music

Consider purchasing a CD of singing monks from Bhutan to use as a musical stress relief when you get home and are back in office daily.

Spiritual Souvenirs

For parents and friends, colorful prayer banners, aromatic candles, and rosary beads make thoughtful presents.

Enjoy Bhutan festivals during vacation

Highlight Festivals & Events

Step into the vibrant tapestry of Bhutan's culture with "Go Bhutan Tours" and immerse yourself in the colorful world of Bhutanese festivals and events. Bhutan is not just about its breathtaking landscapes and ancient traditions; it's also a land of joyous celebrations and major events.

Throughout the year, Bhutan hosts a plethora of festivals that offer a glimpse into the heart and soul of this remarkable nation. From the lively Paro Tsechu to the mystical Punakha Drubchen, these festivals are a window into Bhutan's rich religious and cultural heritage. The Tshechus, or religious festivals, are among the major events in Bhutan, and they are celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm.

Let "Go Bhutan Tours" be your gateway to the enchanting world of Bhutan's festivals and events, where the past and present come together in a joyous celebration of culture and heritage.

Health and Safe Vacation in Bhutan

Health & Safety

Go Bhutan Tours makes each precaution to make sure the Bhutan vacations are safe, enjoyable, and fun for everyone. The company takes the health and safety of its visitors carefully. We advise all passengers to get the most recent information prior to boarding from their local government or regional travel guide agency.

What an incredible experience ! This year I realised my more than 30 years old dream, which was to visit Bhutan once in my life, and I must say that thanks to Acorn Tours and Travel, and Karma’s perfect organisation, my dream was more than fulfilled. According to our wishes and with quick responsiveness, Karma organised for my friend and me a tailor-made 20 days tour through the country from East to West, with entry by road into the country from the Jaigaon (India) border. It included a 2 days stay with the Brokpas people in Merak, a stay in Ura to take part to the Ura Yakchoe Festival, with its colourful and spectacular dances, a 2 days excursion to the beautiful off the beaten tracks Haa valley with impressing view of the Himalayan snow covered summits viewed in the far north from the Chelela pass. Lodging choice was a good balance between typical bhutanese homestays/farmstays and conventional hotels of good level, mainly with lovely character. Food was good and abundant, a special mention to the tasty food in the homestays/farmstays where we appreciated the « not too low spiced and occidental tourists adapted » food ! Thank you to Norbu our wonderful, interesting, helpful and lovely guide, giving me a hand whenever the path was too steep or slippery, and very generous with all kind of informations regarding culture, religion, bird- and wildlife, and a pro-photographer on top. Thank you to Nidrup for your good and safe driving, your kind help and great sense of humour. Congratulations Bhutan Acorn T and T, we can only recommend you ! JC + D
Had an incredible journey exploring Bhutan’s beautiful culture and landscapes! Karma was very communicative and made the planning process seamless. My guide Norbu took so much time to make sure I was enjoying my trip, explained in thorough detail the history, religion, and culture of Bhutan. The Bumdra trek descending down to Tiger’s Nest monastery was incredibly beautiful. Overall perfectly planned trip thanks to Acorn. Loved the experience so much I decided to return for a trek with them!

Very well run by the local tour company (Gakyil) . My guide and driver were excellent.(Dev and Tashi) Both had really good knowledge. Tashi my guide gave me a great insight into Budhisim. We also had a lot of fun and many laughs. I highly recommend this tour. Bhutan is a real eye opener. There should be more places like this in this world. Glenn Burnside New Zealand
Adventure Himalaya was not the tour operator as stated, We discovered on arrival that it was Bhutan Aries Tours and Treks. They did a very good job but we like to know who we are dealing with early on and have contact information in case unforeseen events occur. Our major disappointment involves the accommodations we received in Phodrang . In e-mails, websites, and in the itineraries, we were told we would be in 3 star hotels. In fact, the Bhutan Government Route Permit provided to us by Adventure Himalayan stated we we staying at the Dewachen Hotel with 3 stars. We were taken to the Thegchen Phodrang Guest House which is not rated as a hotel. We had to walk several minutes down a muddy road, then on arrival the electricity in the house was off and we were led to our room up a dangerously dark stairway. The electricity was later turned on. The room had no telephone, no WiFi, no television, was not properly heated, and in the morning there was no hot water. We checked booking websites and discovered the current rate for this guest house is $28 US per night. We would very much like to understand how and why this whole situation occurred.

Bhutan is a magical country. It is so unique and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My tour guide was amazing and took great care of me. The hotels I stayed in were great and so was all of the food. The Tiger’s Nest is a bucket list place to go.
Coming to Bhutan was a long time goal. I’m glad I did. I thought I was joining a small group but it turns out it was just me with Pemba as guide and Bhaia as driver. Both men very welcoming and friendly. Pemba especially went above and beyond to make it interesting and a learning experience. As a seasoned traveler I truly understand and appreciate an engaged guide. Nature is breathtaking and the monuments quite unique. Food in general is not a reason to come, it was repetitive and lacked imagination. I believe the location of the last hotel in Paro should have been closer to town, but staff in every place I stayed could not have been nicer. The travel agency was responsive and straightforward in our communications. I truly enjoyed the trip. Thanks to Pemba especially, who was with me all along.

This tour was through Bamba Experience and I have to say Bamba was excellent. Because I was on the road for 94 days in total, with sometimes limited web access, I missed the email with my Bhutan Visa. You cannot board a plane to Bhutan from India without a visa. But a call to Bamba Experience resolved the problem in minutes and I was able to make my flight. My guide and driver in Bhutan were excellent. We hit every temple at the perfect time to hear the chanting and music, they included things that I wanted to see that were not listed in the itinerary, they were open, friendly and informative and I really got a feel for the country given I only had 4 days including travel time. If I had more time, I would add Jakar and Punakha. Bhutan was a serene oasis after the hustle and bustle of India and Nepal.
We just finished a trip in Bhutan with Bamba Experience - you guys rock! Our guide and driver were amazing! They were very professional, knowledgeable and entertaining too. We didn't want to come home! We were a little short on time for this trip, so we chose to do the 5D/4N Bhutan Tibetan Kingdom tour. This trip covered all the main sights such as Tiger's Nest Monastery, Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu and lots of beautiful scenery, which is what drew us to Bhutan initially. The hotels and food on this trip were wonderful too, definitely exceeded my expectations. Bamba Experience allowed us the freedom of independent travel in Bhutan, with the skills and knowledge of our awesome guides who made us feel so welcome in their country. It was hard to say goodbye. Highly recommended! We'll be back to book our next trip with you guys :)

My husband and I just returned from a 7-day tour of Bhutan, organized by Luxury Holidays Nepal, and we were blown away by the beauty of this country. It seemed like an Asian version of Switzerland to us, with its gorgeous snow-capped mountains, and foothills terraced with rice fields. It also has a Swiss-like attention to detail and quality in its architecture and handicrafts. The hotels are not up to the same standards unfortunately, unless you want to pay a fortune for 5-star hotels, but the 3-star ones selected for us were adequate. Everything else done by Luxury Holidays Nepal was top-notch. All communication and visa application before the trip was efficient, the pick-up at the airport went totally smoothly, and it was upon this pick-up that we met Sangay and Chimi, our guide and driver for the week, and the nicest people you could possibly imagine. The two of them fully demonstrate the warmth and hospitality that is typical of the Bhutanese people, but we got an added bonus in them, because they are hilarious! They had us laughing all over this beautiful country. In general, it seems that Bhutanese guides really love their jobs, and we enjoyed watching them laugh together as they met up at various tour sites. It's a small country and a small tourism industry, so not only do the guides meet up, but you often see the same tourists at different venues! It made for a very intimate experience, and we feel very lucky to be among the few who have experienced this wonderful country. If you can afford it (it is expensive!), I highly recommend a visit to Bhutan, and if you do go there, I highly recommend that you turn to Luxury Holidays Nepal to organize your adventure. With their team behind you, you will have happy travels in the country known for its Gross National Happiness!

Thanks for wonderful tour guide and driver, our 5 day-stay in Bhutan became unforgettable memories. The total 5 days tour was well structured which included various sight visits and cultural experiences and particularly, all foods were delicious. The guide was very informative and approachable tour guide and his knowledge was not limited to simple explanation of cultural sights - it's way beyond so that we could learn the spirits of Bhutanese. Their unstoppable hospitality made us decide to definitely come back again Bhutan. The coordinator of tourradar also supported us for whole the process. As the travel to Bhutan requires many complecated process, their timely and ressonsive services helped us a lot.
We had an amazing time in both countries. Hotels are great, guides are knowledgeable and friendly, food is phenomenal. Gentrification is worldwide, and Nepal and Bhutan are changing rapidly. But they still retain their traditional culture - something you probably won't see 20 years from now. Go NOW! You will have experiences that you won't find on any other country left on earth.

************************************************************************************************ I absolutely cannot say enough good things about Bhutan Best Inbound Tour and our INCREDIBLE trip organizer/point-of-contact, Thinley!! Thinley worked tirelessly with us for many weeks organizing the most perfect extended family adventure in Bhutan. He patiently explained every option and gave us insights into every place that we considered adding to the itinerary. He navigated a complex set of requests from multiple people with different interests, and he managed to coordinate the perfect itinerary during the busiest festival time of the year. We had a great deal of communication by email, WhatsApp, and even a video conference call just before we left, and Thinley could not have been any warmer, kinder, or more friendly each time we spoke. He also assigned us an absolutely delightful guide, Chencho, to lead us on our adventure, and we had wonderful communication with him, as well, before we traveled East. And then... disaster struck. The day before we were all scheduled to fly to Delhi (followed by Paro the next day), my husband had a totally shocking/sudden medical crises that landed him in the hospital. He was extremely ill, and while the doctors were able to stabilize him, they said he wouldn't be back on his feet for weeks - much less able to travel anywhere. I was in shock. But once I collected myself, I sent a message to Thinley, and he was just so comforting and kind! He told me not to worry about anything except my husband, and he would take care of everything. Shortly after his message, I also received an incredibly kind and comforting message from Chencho. Amazing people!! Of course, at that point, we had also already wired full payment for our trip, and we were especially anxious about that because we now had to deal with enormous medical expenses. But, true to their good word, Thinley arranged to wire our funds back immediately. This was a god-send for us, and we are so absolutely enchanted with our experience (even not having taken our trip!), that we are entirely committed to "re-taking" our planned excursion with Bhutan Best Inbound Tour as soon as my husband can travel again! THANK YOU SO MUCH, THINLEY, CHENCHO, AND BHUTAN BEST INBOUND TOUR!! 🙏🙏🙏 ************************************************************************************************
The trip was very well organised and both our driver and guide were polite and attentive to our needs. All the hotels were 3 star with plenty of local character. There were enough activities everyday to keep us busy. Where there was a "rest break" our guide was happy to replace it with a hike. The local people were very friendly and the scenery was always so beautiful and green.

Man wearing a red cap looking at the view atop of the mountain in Bhutan on a clear sunny day

Bhutan measures its success by Gross National Happiness and by the end of your Intrepid tour, you’ll have contributed more than your fair share of smiles to the cause.

This tiny Himalayan kingdom does things differently. Having only been open to visitors for 45 years, Bhutan puts its environment, culture and wellbeing ahead of economics. This place absorbs more carbon than it creates and a Bhutan tour is perfect for trekkers, nature-lovers and Buddhist pilgrims. From the jaw-dropping Tiger’s Nest to the prayer halls of Gangte Goemba, you’ll experience moments – and people – that make happiness seem like the norm, not a pursuit.

Culture and customs.

If travellers can tear their eyes away from the backdrop of the mighty Himalaya, they’ll discover a rich, remarkable culture in Bhutan that is quickly modernising yet truly anchored in tradition.

Since opening up to travellers in 1974, Bhutan has seen visitor numbers rise from just a couple of hundred to upwards of 200,000. The appeal is obvious: pristine alpine landscapes, magnificent Buddhist architecture and an air of mystery that pulls travellers in, not to mention the much-discussed Gross National Happiness used to measure national wellbeing, which is prioritised over GDP.

Bhutan is the only country in the world to be carbon negative. Since 2007 the country has been run by a democratic government, with three separate parties having won the three national elections since. Approximately 75 per cent of the population are Buddhist and these religious values are used to guide government policy along with prioritising sustainability and cultural preservation.

In society, the Bhutanese follow ‘driglam namzha’, a traditional etiquette supporting the respect for authority, devotion to family and a dedication to civic duty. The flag, which was adopted in 1965, features the country’s emblem of the Thunder Dragon on a backdrop of golden yellow and orange. The yellow represents the king and his secular power, while the orange represents Buddhism. The dragon holds jewels in each of his claws, representing the wealth of the nation.

And it’s the word ‘wealth’ that perhaps describes Bhutan best. A wealth of tradition, of culture, of history. A wealth of beauty, of happiness, of prosperity. In the future, given the way the country has been progressing, there’ll no doubt be a large amount of wealth brought in by more and more tourists. What will be interesting is how Bhutan manages to balance its age-old traditions with its quickening march towards modernity.

History and government

Early history.

As one of the few countries in the world to have never been conquered or occupied by another, Bhutan has a long history of independent governance. Although its early history is shrouded in mystery, Bhutan is thought to have been inhabited from as early as 2000BC. Tibetan Buddhism was introduced into the region around the 9th century, when many Tibetans fled neighbouring Tibet to seek refuge in Bhutan.

The leadership and governance of Bhutan has always been linked to its religion, and this continues in today’s political, legal and religious leadership of the country. The 16th and 17th centuries saw some conflict with Tibet, although Bhutan was never officially taken over by its neighbour. External threats from the British presented themselves in the 18th and 19th centuries; however, once again Bhutan was never officially controlled or governed by an external power.

Recent history

In the last 40 years, Bhutan has had many ‘firsts’. Bhutan introduced a new monetary system and currency in 1974 and also opened up its borders to welcome foreign tourists in the same year. By 2000, Bhutan had its first television set and internet cafe, and by 2004 Bhutan became the first country in the world to ban the sale of tobacco products. Bhutan’s first constitution was drawn up in 2005, and its first democratic multi-party election was held in 2008, when the constitution was finally ratified. It has held two democratic elections since.

Today, Bhutan’s economy relies mainly on tourism, agriculture and forestry, although ‘Gross National Happiness’ continues to be valued more than economic abundance or growth in domestic product. Bhutan has been held up as an example of what a country can be when it puts culture, the environment and wellbeing ahead of economic development, but there are challenges too: after the new government took control in 2013, the prime minister admitted that the focus on the Gross National Happiness measure sometimes distracted from addressing Bhutan’s problems including unemployment, corruption and poverty.

Eating and drinking

Bhutan is famous for its spicy cuisine that’ll knock the socks off the most hardy traveller. Almost everything is served with chillies, so if you like things spicy, you may just have found heaven – for others it’ll be hotter than hell.

A few dishes to look out for

  • Ema datshi These are very hot chillies served in a cheese sauce. This is Bhutan’s national dish, with ema translating as ‘chilli’ and ‘datshi’ as cheese.
  • Phak sha pa Sliced pork stewed using red chilli, onion, tomato, ginger and sliced radish.
  • Red rice The Bhutanese eat loads of rice and you’ll notice that the rice is usually a reddish colour. This is because it’s grown in the fertile Paro Valley soil. It has a nutty flavour and is typically paired with mushrooms and chilli.
  • Momos These Tibetan dumplings are filled with meat, cheese or vegetables and are generally served up as a snack. Never say to no-no to a Momo.
  • Red Panda beer The Red Panda Brewery, which is Bhutan’s first, was started by a man named Fritz Maurer who came to Bhutan from Switzerland after answering a newspaper ad for a qualified cheesemaker. Not only does he make Swiss cheese, he also produces this hefeweizen beer.

Plant-based options

Vegetarians will find travelling through Bhutan easy as meat does not play a huge part in the Bhutanese diet. Vegans may have a more difficult time as dishes will often come with cheese. Be sure to ask that your dish is prepared without butter or cheese.

Of course, this is all a lot easier when you’re travelling with a local. If you travel with Intrepid, you’ll have a local leader who can help you decipher menus and recommend good plant-based choices.

Geography and environment

This landlocked kingdom may occupy a small space on the world globe but there’s nothing small about the mountains that lie within. Sharing borders with China and India, Bhutan is known as 'The Switzerland of Asia' for its mountainous topography and similarity to Swiss landscapes.

Bhutan has largely resisted overdevelopment, which has left much of its natural environment intact. As a result of this, Bhutan is one of the most species-rich countries in the world – with hundreds of species of mammals, birds and plants calling the Bhutanese valleys, mountains and meadows home. Endangered red pandas and snow leopards can be found in Bhutan as well as a huge variety of wild flowers and birds.

The country can be divided into three areas. In the south, you’ll find the lowlands fronting the Indian border, which enjoy a subtropical climate. This region sees monsoonal rains from June to mid-October and mild winters through December, January and February.

Travel north and the climate becomes progressively colder as the Himalaya rise. The central belt of the country, in the lower foothills of the Himalaya, features cold, dry winters and warm summers with monsoonal rains on the southern sides, while the valleys experience less rainfall thanks to the mountains’ protection.

In the northern regions, as the Himalaya rise above 2500 metres (8202 feet), the winters are cold and while the summer can be warm, the valleys are generally protected against monsoonal rain. The temperatures turn freezing as you reach the China-Tibet border, with the mountains rising to a high point at Gangkhar Puensum (7570 m/24,480 ft) – the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.

If you’re after top quality handicrafts and colourful art, then Bhutan will delight. While Bhutan isn’t known as a top shopping destination, there are many talented artisans creating good quality souvenirs to buy here.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

  • Hand-woven fabric Traditional weaving is at its very best in Bhutan. Choose from colourful rugs, clothing, blankets and accessories when visiting one of the many textile stores and boutiques in Bhutan’s cities.
  • Traditional music Why not pick up a CD of Bhutanese harmonies, or chanting monks, as a melodic stress-buster for when you’re back at home and in work mode.
  • Spiritual souvenirs Vibrant prayer flags, fragrant incense and prayer beads make meaningful gifts for friends and family back home.

Festival and events

Bhutan's festival calendar is packed with colourful occassions filled with celebrations and dancing.

Paro Spring Festival (Paro Tshechu)

The people of Paro welcome the start of spring with five days of cultural and spiritual celebration. Locals shake off the winter blues by indulging in sword dancing, drumming and feasting. Expect to see stirring rituals, colourful clothing and touching displays of faith if you’re lucky enough to travel during this time.

Thimphu Festival (Thimphu Tschechu)

This three-day festival is meant to be highly auspicious to all who attend. Bhutanese people travel from all over to attend this spiritual celebration that features prayers and rituals to invoke the gods as well as traditional dance, costume and theatre. This highly joyous time gives travellers an important insight into Bhutan’s culture and the chance to mingle with locals.

The best times to visit are the shoulder seasons of March to May and September to November, with the later months being particularly pleasant as rainfall is lower and the views tend to be clearer.

December to February sees snowfall in many areas but it can be a beautiful time to visit thanks to the snow covering the mountainous landscape.

Is it safe to visit Bhutan?

Yes, it is safe to visit Bhutan. The crime rate in Bhutan is low although petty crime does happen. Travellers should be alert and keep an eye on their belongings, particularly in crowded or well-touristed areas.

If you are visiting high-altitude areas be sure to discuss altitude sickness with a doctor and plan accordingly. Flooding and landslides occur during the monsoon period (June–September) so follow local advice and check with your tour operator for disruptions.

Do I need a visa to travel to Bhutan?

All nationalities require a visa for Bhutan and, at this stage, travellers can only enter as part of a group visa on a tour. Independent visas are not issued and the cost of the visa is included in your tour. If you are travelling with Intrepid, please provide your booking agent with the following information for us to apply for your group visa:

  • a scanned colour copy of the photo page of your passport (consisting of both the flip pages)
  • full name as per passport
  • date of birth
  • nationality
  • passport number & date of issue/expiry,
  • email address you will access while travelling
  • arrival and departure flight details

Due to the controlled nature of travel in Bhutan the group visa can only be submitted once we have the above details from ALL travellers in the group. Failure to advise any of the information as above can slow the visa issuing process and delay the visa for the whole group.

Visas are generally issued within 5 days of departure and as close as 48 hours prior to travel into the country. We will send your group visa to your travelling email address. Please print this visa and carry with you as you will need it at the time of boarding your Bhutan flight.

You must show the copy of your Bhutan group visa at the check-in for your flight to Bhutan and on arrival at immigration in Bhutan where you will have a Bhutan entry stamp placed into your passport.

Is tipping customary in Bhutan?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bhutan, but many people who work in tourism are accustomed to receiving tips so it's wise to set aside a small amount to show your appreciation for drivers, cooks and other service workers. Most hotels and restaurants will include a service fee in the final bill.

Your local leader may discuss the idea of running a group tipping kitty on the first day of your trip. In a group tipping kitty, everybody contributes an equal amount at the start of the tour that your leader uses to tip drivers, local guides and hotel staff on your behalf. The leader will keep a running record of all monies spent, which can be checked at any time. Any money remaining at the end of the tour is returned to group members.

This is often the easiest way to avoid the hassle of needing small change and knowing when and what is an appropriate amount to tip. Participation in this kitty is optional, and you are welcome to manage your own tipping separately if you prefer. Please note the tipping kitty excludes tips for your tour leader.

What is the internet access like in Bhutan?

Most tourist hotels will have free wifi, as will many restaurants or cafes in Bhutan’s larger cities. It’s possible to buy a local SIM though internet access will be limited in the remote and mountainous regions.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Bhutan?

If you plan on using your mobile phone in Bhutan be sure to activate global roaming and check charges with your provider before you leave home. If your phone is unlocked, you can purchase a local SIM on arrival. The best coverage is with B-Mobile, while Tashi Cell has similar costs but more limited coverage. Please note that coverage will be limited in more remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Bhutan?

You will have to adjust to different standards of hygiene and sanitation while in Bhutan. Squat toilets are the norm across the country, which may take some getting used to, though Western-style, flushable toilets can be found in large hotels and some tourist areas.

Can I drink the water in Bhutan?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Bhutan. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water and fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Bhutan?

Credit cards are accepted are large hotels and the bigger stores but a heavy surcharge often applies. Keep in mind that tours in Bhutan are fully prepaid and include all meals and transport, so your only spending money should be for souvenirs, snacks and drinks. It’s best to bring and use US dollars for large purchases.

What is ATM access like in Bhutan?

There are ATMs available in Bhutan’s larger cities though they won’t accept some foreign cards. If you are travelling outside of the main cities be sure to carry cash to cover small purchases.

What is the weather like in Bhutan?

Bhutan’s weather varies depending on your location and the time of year.

In the capital, Thimphu, the temperature averages from 5°C (41°F) in January to 20°C (68°F) in the summertime. This summer period, from June–August, also sees the monsoonal rains arrive. The nearby city of Paro experiences a similar climate.

The city of Punakha, which is located at 1300 metres (4250 feet), has a warmer climate than Thimphu. The average temperature ranges from 11°C (75°F) in winter to 24°C (75°F) in the summertime. Because of the mountainous terrain, the rains here generally affect the southern side while the valleys experience less intense rainfall.

Is Bhutan safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Bhutan, like most Asian countries, is not particularly appreciative of public displays of affection regardless of sexual orientation.

Homosexuality has been illegal in Bhutan since 2004, but in 2019 a bill was passed to decriminalise what was known as ‘unnatural sex’.

LGBTQIA+ people are generally accepted in Bhutan but work still needs to be done to change social attitudes towards those that identify differently.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Bhutan accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Travelling through Bhutan is difficult for those with physical disabilities. There are only a few hotels that have accessible rooms and bathrooms, and it’s rare that buildings will have been adapted for accessibility issues. That said, all travel through Bhutan must be done through a tour group so if you’re interested in travelling there then Intrepid will do all it can to make that dream a reality

As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in Bhutan

During winter, if travelling to high altitude areas, you’ll need cold-weather gear, thermals, good waterproof boots and a warm/windproof jacket. If you’re not taking on an alpine trek, however, warm clothes are necessary for the evening but a fleece and windbreaker should suffice during the day.

In the summertime, lightweight clothing is best along with a raincoat, as well as a jumper for the evening. You may add warmer clothes if heading into the higher reaches of the Himalaya, including a beanie, gloves, scarf and down jacket.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Best Bhutan Tour Packages in 2024

Bhutan tourism: a traveller’s guide to explore the kingdom of happiness.

We all deserve a travel holiday to be somewhere where we can find happiness and unwind completely. There's no better place than the tranquil kingdom of Bhutan, where Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product.

Bhutan possesses scenic valleys, gigantic mountains and landscapes, dotted with spiritual monasteries at every nook. It is also soaked in myths and legends, like no other country in the world. The streets here brim with monks and houses with prayer flags. The rings of bells from monasteries echo in the air, and nature's scent will be all around you. This place is a mecca for those who need a break from the hustle and bustle of regular city life.

Tired of comparing Bhutan tour packages? Pick the best Bhutan tour package for yourself after referring to the following information.

Bhutan Tourism: Best Time to Visit

October to December is the best time to book Bhutan tour packages as the sky is clear. January and February are too wintry to travel, but from then until April, the climate remains pleasant for travelling. If you plan for the Bhutan trip in late spring, you will be captivated by the beauty of the famous rhododendrons, blooming spectacularly throughout the valleys.

Bhutan Trip: Visa for Indians

Indian citizens do not require a visa for travelling with Bhutan tour packages. You will receive a free entry permit by the Bhutanese government upon arrival in the country. All you need to carry is your identity card or passport to explore the happy kingdom with Bhutan tour packages. While browsing Bhutan tour packages, make sure you book the one inclusive of travel entry permits if you want to ease down your work.

Bhutan Tourism: Best Places to Visit

While booking Bhutan tour packages, make sure you add the below-mentioned places to the itinerary.

The Hanging Taktsang Monastery

The best way to begin your journey with Bhutan tour packages is probably by visiting the famous Taktsang Palphug Monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest. It is a sacred place of worship, nestled on a cliff of the beautiful Paro Valley. In 1962, Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye built this temple close to the cave where the divine sage Padmasambhava meditated and prayed. The sage worshipped in the cave during the 8th century for three years. What's more? It is this sage who bestowed Bhutan with Buddhism!

The Palace of Great Happiness - Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong is also known as Pungtang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang and is said to be a palace of great happiness or bliss. It is a must to be included in your itinerary while browsing Bhutan tour packages. Punakha Dzong is situated at the confluence of two rivers, namely, Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu and is the second oldest and largest in Bhutan. An old tale goes around in Bhutan that the sage Padmasambhava predicted that "a person named Namgyal will arrive at a hill that looks like an elephant." The prediction came true because, in 1636-37, Ngawang Namgyal built the Dzong on the peak of the hill, which looked like an elephant's trunk!

The Huge Buddha Statue in Buddha Dordenma

Buddha Dordenma is another reason to book a Bhutan tour package. The Great Buddha statue was constructed in Kuensel Phodrang, Thimphu, to celebrate the 60th birthday of the fourth king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The 51m sculpture houses a temple along with 1,25,000 miniatures sculpted the same as the giant structure. The structure is made out of bronze and took over nine years in total for completion. What's unique is the statue sitting on the hill as the protector of the entire Thimphu valley.

The Tranquil Gangtey Monastery

Gangtey Monastery is one of the major centres of the Nyingma school of Buddhism in Bhutan. Due to the village of Gangteng settled close to it, the Gangtey Monastery got its name. It serves as the main seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition. The complex includes monks' quarters, meditation centres, a central goemba, and a guest house. The vibe of the place is tranquil and soothing to someone looking for noise-detox. Tourists can meditate here and enjoy the beauty of the monastery and the serene view of the valley with some holiday packages.

Bhutan Tourism: Local Dishes to Try

Bhutan tour packages or rather any holiday tour packages are incomplete without tasting the local delicacies of the country. When in Bhutan, savour these dishes and you won’t regret it.

If there is one national dish that you need to sample when touring Bhutan, this is it! It is so scrumptious that if you haven't eaten ema datshi, your Bhutan trip isn't complete. The locals eat the stew cooked with green, yellow or red chillies, cheese prepared with cow’s or yak’s milk, onions and tomatoes, and it is served with red rice. The taste is spicy because Bhutan’s chillies are high up on the Scoville Heat Scale (a tool that measures the spiciness or pungency of hot peppers).

Jasha Maroo or Maru

Jasha Maroo is cooked with chillies, onions, tomatoes, garlic, coriander leaves, ginger and finely diced chicken. At some places, you might even find it made with beef. It is served with red rice and is packed with unique flavours.

Phaksha Paa

Phaksha Paa is prepared by slowly cooking boneless pork until it becomes tender. The classic Bhutanese stew has ingredients such as radish, ginger, bok choy, and chilli powder. When prepared, the stew is topped with dried pork and fresh green chilli strips and is served with a bed of rice.

Want to taste some of the finest brews in Bhutan? Visit the Namgay Artisanal Brewery in Paro Valley. Reputed for its rare Bhutanese ingredients, the beer has a distinctive taste. Don’t forget to try beers made with red rice, wheat, apple cider and more while enjoying Bhutan tour packages.

Things to Do on Your Bhutan Trip

Bhutan tour packages offer numerous activities that can provide an amazing experience of the country. Here are a few recommendations for your Bhutan tour packages.

Hot Spring Therapy

Hot springs are known as tshachus/menchus in Bhutan and are located in various parts of the country. The medicinal properties of these hot springs are believed to cure numerous ailments such as body aches, sinuses and even arthritis. Duenmang, Dhur Tshachu and Gelephu Tshachu are the most popular hot springs among the Bhutanese. You can ask your tour operator to add hot spring therapy to your Bhutan tour package to add a relaxing element to your holidays.

De-stress Meditation

You can easily find small retreat centres and hermitages located all over the country, next to monastic schools, temples and monasteries. These retreats and meditation centres provide rest from the stress of everyday life.

Adventure Sports

Adventure sports and tourism are relatively recent introductions in Bhutan, but there's no denying that these sports offer unforgettable experiences. Besides rafting and kayaking on the scenic rivers of Bhutan, you can also go for trekking expeditions to hidden valleys and catch alluring sunsets.

Shopping Binge

One of the most exciting things to do in Paro is attending the weekend market. Traders from almost all walks of life come here to sell home-grown vegetables, farm products like dried yak cheese, exotic ferns, betel nuts and juniper incense, and farming tools.

Souvenirs to Look Out For

When planning Bhutan tour packages, make sure you save a day for shopping to buy yourself a souvenir. Thimphu, Paro, and Jakar are major shopping centres of this Buddhist country. Upon your visit to a local market, indulge in traditional souvenirs such as textiles, bow and arrow, handicrafts, red rice, jewellery and weaving products.

Unspoiled by the modern influence, Bhutan should be your go-to place if you’re looking for a slow pace of life, no traffic jams and horns, soft-spoken people and captivating landscapes. The tranquillity here calms your mind and allows you to be a better version of yourself.

Whether you want to get away from your schedules, need a family vacation, or wish to unwind, choose Bhutan tour packages from India that offer an all-inclusive experience.

Feel free to tailor Bhutan tour packages as per your preference to have the best holiday experience ever!

Frequently asked questions about Bhutan

The ideal itinerary for a Bhutan trip is 2 nights in Thimpu, 1 night in Punakha and 3 nights in Paro.

Indian nationals intending to visit Bhutan are required to carry any of the two valid 'Travel Documents' (a) Valid Indian Passport having validity of minimum 6 months; and/or (b) Voter Identity Card, issued by the Election Commission of India. No Visa is required to visit Bhutan. Indians coming to Bhutan by road are required to obtain an 'Entry Permit' on the basis of valid Travel Document from the Immigration Office of Royal Government of Bhutan at Phuentsholing, located on the Indo-Bhutan border opposite Jaigaon, West Bengal. Similarly, Indians coming by air must possess any one of the above-mentioned Travel Documents and get the Entry Permit at the Paro International Airport. The 'entry permit' allows an Indian tourist to visit Thimphu and Paro only. However, any tourist going beyond Thimphu and Paro needs to acquire a 'Special Area Permit' from the RGoB Immigration Office at Thimphu on any working days (Monday to Friday).

Depending on duration and kind of hotel you stay, Bhutan travel can cost you anywhere between 35,000 to 1,25,000. We recommend you to stay at least 5 nights and visit Thimphu/ Paro and Punakha.

  • Respect local culture.
  • Bhutan is the only carbon negative country of the World, travel responsibly.
  • You need to pay anything from 100% to 200% duty if you carry tobacco products from India, please ensure you declare and pay duty at the Paro airport.
  • If you need room service for food etc, order in advance, as speed of service is slower than Indian hotels.

How To Reach Bhutan?

Earlier, it was difficult to reach Bhutan as the frozen paths in the North and dense jungles in the South. After 1960, Bhutan was made well-connected to various countries by different modes of transport like air, train and road. Here is a detailed list of numerous modes of reaching Bhutan from which you can choose according to your budget and time.

The one and only airport to reach Bhutan is located in Paro namely, Paro International Airport. Apart from this, there is a domestic airport situated in the south-central part of Bhutan called Gelephu Airport. The only airline which operates regular flights from selected places of the world to Bhutan is the National Air Carrier of Bhutan. One of the other ways to reach Bhutan is via Bagdodra Airport. This airport receives many flights from major cities of India as it is not far away from the Bhutanese border and takes only a four-hour drive to reach there. While travelling through plane, you can witness the mesmerizing scene of the Paro Valley and high peak mountains.

There are only three main land borders which tourists have to cross to reach Bhutan, that is, Gelephu, Phuentsholing and Samdrup Jongkhar.

Gelephu, situated in the south-central part of Bhutan, is around 250 kms away from Thimpu, the capital city. The journey includes passage via the alpine zone and sub-tropical areas of Bhutan which makes the journey more interesting. The passage crosses three districts and takes ten hours to cover the journey.

Located in the south-west side of Bhutan, Phuentsholing is approximately 170 kms away from the Bagdodra Airport in West Bengal (India). It takes half of the time in comparison with the Gelephu journey.

Samdrup Jongkhar is positioned in the south-east part of Bhutan which is 150 kms away from the capital city of Assam, Guwahati. This three-hour route takes travelers through Mongar, Bumthang, Trongsa and many more places.

It is not at all shocking to know that travelers from India and can also opt for bus services from Kolkata. One can get a direct bus from the Esplanade Station in Kolkata to Phuentsholing. The 18-hour journey is usually comfortable as the bus services are provided by the Royal Bhutanese Government. Besides this, Siliguri has regular bus service to Jaigaon which takes less than four hours to reach there.

Paro International Airport is the only airport in this country that to several countries of the world like India, Europe, Nepal, and Thailand. If vacationers want to take a road route to Bhutan, buses ply from Bhutan to Kolkata, Siliguri, and Phuentsholing, and vice versa. To reach Bhutan by car, tourists can drive through three land border crossings located along the southern border, only from India.

Unfortunately, there is no direct train route to Bhutan. As a result, travelers ultimately have to book a cab or bus from the nearby railway stations. Some of the best options in India are Hasimara, New Jalpaiguri Station and New Alipurduar.

Located in West Bengal, Hasimara is only 17 kms away from Phuentsholing. Travelers can catch Indian railways to reach here. Apart from this, New Jalpaiguri Station in Siliguri is one of the most convenient options from where you can hire direct taxis or buses to reach Jaigaon. Whereas, New Alipurduar is 60 kms away from Jaigaon.

I cannot deny that going to Bhutan with my family was the most amazing experience of my life.

Traveling in Bhutan: What You Need to Know Before You Go

tour in bhutan

Unless you're from a select few countries, such as India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, travel to Bhutan is expensive and not easily undertaken. However, the distinctive Buddhist culture, unspoiled scenery, and fresh mountain air make it very worthwhile. The number of people visiting Bhutan is increasing every year, reflective of growing interest in the country as a tourism destination. Here's what you need to know to plan your trip.

Tours and Independent Travel

The Bhutanese government is hesitant about allowing visitors into the country. Independent travel to Bhutan is opening up, but it's not something the government encourages. Generally, visitors to Bhutan must either be tourists or guests of the government. The only other options for visiting the country are to receive an invitation from "a citizen of some standing" or a volunteer organization.

With the exception of passport holders from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, all tourists must travel on a pre-planned, prepaid, guided package tour or custom-designed travel program.

Getting a Visa

Everyone traveling to Bhutan must obtain a visa in advance, except for passport holders from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. Passport holders from these three countries are classified as "regional tourists" and can obtain a free Entry Permit on arrival upon producing their passport with a minimum of six months validity. Indian nationals can also use their Voters Identity Card. Citizens of these countries must still pay a Sustainable Development Fee of $17 per day. An exemption applies to tourists visiting 11 specific districts in eastern Bhutan, from Trongsa to Trashigang. The Bhutanese government is aiming to increase tourism in this region.

For other passport holders, the Sustainable Development Fee is $65, which is included in the "Minimum Daily Package" rate (see below). The visa cost is $40. The visas must be applied for and paid for in advance, from registered tour operators (not embassies), at the same time as booking the rest of your trip. You should make your travel arrangements at least 90 days before travel to allow time for all the formalities to be completed.

The visas are processed through an online system by the tour operators and are approved by the Tourism Council of Bhutan once full payment of the cost of the trip has been received. Tourists are issued a visa clearance letter to be presented at immigration upon arrival at the airport. The visa is then stamped in the passport.

Getting There

The only international airport in Bhutan is located at Paro, about an hour's drive from Thimphu. Currently, two national airlines operate flights to Bhutan: Drukair and Bhutan Airlines. Departure points include Bangkok (Thailand), Kathmandu (Nepal), New Delhi and Kolkata (India), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Yangoon (Myanmar), and Singapore.

It's also possible to travel to Bhutan from India overland by road. The main border crossing is Jaigaon-Phuentsholing. There are two others, at Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar.

The minimum price of tours (called a "Minimum Daily Package") to Bhutan is set by the government to control tourism and protect the environment, and can't be negotiated. The price includes all accommodations, meals, transportation, guides and porters, and cultural programs. Part of it also goes towards free education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation in Bhutan.

"Minimum Daily Package" prices vary according to the season and the number of tourists in the group.

High Season: March, April, May, September, October, and November

  • $250 per person per day for a group of three or more people.
  • $280 per person per day for a group of two people.
  • $290 per day for single individuals.

Low Season: January, February, June, July, and August

  • $200 per person per day for a group of three or more people.
  • $230 per person per day for a group of two people.
  • $240 per day for single individuals.

Discounts are available for children and students.

Do note that each tour operator has their preferred hotels. These are often the ones that cost less. Therefore, tourists should find out the hotels they've been assigned to, do some research about hotels in Bhutan, and ask to switch hotels if they are not satisfied. Most people assume they're stuck with a fixed itinerary and the hotels allocated to them. However, tour companies will, in fact, accommodate requests in order to keep business.

Tour Companies

The Bhutan Tourist Corporation Limited (BTCL) is highly recommended for making travel bookings to Bhutan. This company is owned by members of the royal family and advertises itself as Bhutan's number one travel agency since 1991. The drivers, guides, and accommodations provided are excellent. If you're interested in photography, see what Rainbow Photography Tours of Bhutan has to offer.

The Tourism Council of Bhutan also has a list of registered tour operators on its website.

The Bhutanese currency is called Ngultrum (BTN) and its value is linked to the Indian Rupee. The Indian Rupee can be used as legal tender in Bhutan, but the Ngultrum is not legal tender in India. There are a limited number of ATMs available.

Development in Bhutan

Bhutan is rapidly changing with a great deal of construction going on, particularly in Thimphu and Paro. As a result, these places have already started to lose their charm and authenticity. Visitors are advised to fly internally from Paro to Bumthang, in the heart of Bhutan, in order to experience the traditional Bhutan. If you're thinking about visiting Bhutan, it's better to go sooner rather than later!

Bhutan: A Luxury Tour Around the Mystical Himalayan Country

Despite opening its doors to the world 50 years ago, Bhutan is largely untouched by external influences.

By Andrew Harris

tour in bhutan

The pitch-perfect notes piercing the crisp morning air outside are so loud and crystal clear that it sounds like the flute sequence from a Puccini opera. Now joined by an equally unrestrained oboe player, my befuddled brain rewinds back to Bhutan’s Paro airport, where I stood in line behind a man whose cap read ‘Oriental Bird Club.’

With the typical duty-free shops and fast-food outlets supplanted by a Buddhist bookshop and photos of beautiful birds, tiny tranquil Paro is more redolent of a museum than an airport. I have, it seems, unwittingly flown straight into Birdwatch Central, but with wonderful wake-up calls like this, that’s not ruffling any feathers.

I eventually arrive at Amankora in Bumthang in central Bhutan, a nine-hour drive along a quiet yak-ruled road with endless loops around massive misty walls of green (70% of Bhutan is covered in forest) as it scythes its way through one of nature’s last remaining unmolested ecological outposts. It’s 50 years since Bhutan, sandwiched precariously between India and China, opened to the world after centuries of isolation, and 20 years since the first international brand appeared.

That was Aman Resorts , after its mythical founder, Adrian Zecha, arrived on the inaugural Bangkok-Paro flight in 1989 with Drukair, Bhutan’s national airline. International carriers still aren’t permitted and, while private jets can land, all pilots must be licensed for Paro’s famously challenging approach. Amankora Bumthang, exuding an understated sophistication long synonymous with Aman, is gently nestled next to an ancient royal palace, the last of five Aman lodges to be constructed, all collectively called Amankora — a model since replicated by other luxury brands.

With its high-value, low-volume approach to tourism, the Land of the Thunder Dragon transmits a seductive siren call to an increasingly over-touristed world. Nearly the size of Switzerland, with less than a tenth of its population, it is rightly terrified of its cultural heritage being irreparably damaged by a rapacious tourist industry. Numbers are kept low by a daily $100 charge, the Sustainable Development Fee, which also helps preserve Bhutan’s unique culture and pristine landscape, as well as supporting free healthcare and education.

In otherworldly Bumthang, inside the 7th-century Jampa Lhankhang temple, the air hangs heavy with centuries of mysticism. Amid the multicolored, timeworn, dimly lit rooms where monks quietly replenish flowers beneath the enigmatic golden gaze of the Buddha, time doesn’t simply stand still; one wonders if it’s ever moved. My guide, Mohan, and I are the only visitors, and while it isn’t quite Seven Years in Tibet, it’s still light-years away from the packed buses and tourist junk plaguing the religious sites of more accessible Buddhist countries. A hundred bucks a day? That’s a bargain.

Mohan reels off a colorful litany of folk tales involving battles between good and evil, crusading heroic lamas, demonesses and consorts capable of assuming other forms, before pointing to a large hole in the stone floor where an evil force once resided. Apparently, evil forces came to feature here regularly. Confused? I know I was, as I stepped circumspectly around the hole, but these rich layered histories interweaving tantric Tibetan Buddhism with long held beliefs in local deities are deeply ingrained and probably best absorbed at one of Bhutan’s many festivals. Mountaineering was prohibited in 2003 precisely because local people deemed it offensive to the spirits who reside there.

amankara bhutan

A short hike (hiking is as popular as birding) through the forest brings us to the isolated Pema Choling nunnery, where I’m immediately confronted by rows of red-robed young nuns. I expect to be shooed away, but we’re quietly motioned up the corner and served tea, then presented with a large drum full of cookies. Can I take a photo? After a hurried consultation, yes, I can. Then, without warning, they lurch into their incantations and one of my more memorable impromptu travel moments. They all look so trusting, I want to warn them about the evil force of over-tourism. They’ll need more than tea and cookies if that ever breaches the kingdom’s defenses.

Dotted across Bhutan are the majestic, centuries old dzongs (fortresses), symbols of feudal power in a country that has only existed since the first king was crowned inside the Punakha Dzong in 1907. At the Trongsa Dzong, the largest, I was unbelievably, once again, the only visitor — apart from the monks that live there, one of whom gave me an apple as he showed off his phone.

The luxury lodges of the temperate Punakha Valley, underneath the domineering presence of the dzong, were joined in 2023 by luxury safari specialist andBeyond , unveiling its first Asian property — a sumptuously stylish nine-room lodge facing the Jigme Dorji National Park. The lodge exudes a laid-back opulence underpinned by an elevated standard of cuisine; it proved difficult to say goodbye. The secluded one-bedroom River House, in an idyllic spot next to a tumbling stream, surely rates among the most covetable romantic retreats in the world.

Punakha River Lodge

High above Thimphu, meanwhile, secreted among apple orchards across the valley from the Buddha Dordenma (one of the largest sitting Buddhas in the world), Six Senses’ ‘Palace in The Sky’ is, like Amankora, one of five lodges proffering the possibility of an interconnected journey. A modern masterpiece of wood and stone encased in soaring shards of glass, with a large spa next to a fabulous infinity pool, it presides serenely over the capital like a spiritual overlord.

Back down the hill, we find a little town strenuously asserting its credentials as a big grown-up capital city — albeit the only one in the world without a traffic light — where, amid the bustling building work, we stumble straight into an archery contest, Bhutan’s national sport. Two teams, 500-ft apart, all dressed in traditional gho (a knee-length robe), were firing arrows, along with the occasional insult, back and forth from bamboo bows with astonishing accuracy. A highly choreographed song and dance routine was performed every time the target was hit. Accidents, apparently, are not uncommon.

That relationship established by Adrian Zecha between HNW visitors and a unique fragile society wary of being overwhelmed is alive and well. To some, it’s extreme; a sledgehammer to crack a nut, perhaps. But until a better way to safeguard this mesmerizing sliver of Himalayan heaven emerges, just keep on swinging that hammer.

andBeyond Punakha River Lodge, Bhutan

The Big Idea: Alone in a Crowd

Don’t bother buying a hotel. There’s no need now, as it has never been easier to enjoy the feeling of your own private resort (if temporarily). Call it an owner’s lodge, a royal villa, or the principal’s home: The must-have of the moment is a mansion-size, hotel-run lodging that has access to all of the amenities but keeps you far away from fellow guests.

This trend is influenced by a permanent shift in travel patterns. According to Black Tomato’s Sunil Metcalfe, bookings for eight people or more increased by 35 percent in 2022 compared to 2019. Such group travel now makes up almost a third of the company’s bookings. “The private-villa and private-staff trend that was massive during Covid is on the wane, but what’s stayed is a desire for private residences within desirable hotels,” he says. Adventure specialist Gray & Co. has seen a similar shift: In 2023, multigenerational travel had doubled.

Properties from urban centers to beach resorts are adding offshoots primed for such buyouts: Oslo’s Sommerro offers the smartly named 11-room Villa Inkognito . At Caiman, the resort-cum–wildlife preserve in Brazil’s wetland Pantanal region, the private villa Baiazinha sleeps 12. And on Lizard Island, in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the deck of the Lizard House overlooks a beach David Attenborough is said to have called one of his favorite places in the world.

Need more than just a single structure? Not to worry. Fiji’s Kokomo Private Island has five residences with three or more bedrooms, each perched on a hilltop. At Long Bay Villas on Anguilla, you can book a trio of homes separately or together. One&Only’s new Greek property Kéa Island , meanwhile, looks more like a village of luxury homes than a hotel. And in Africa, the luxury-safari realm’s move toward micro camps, such as Botswana’s North Island Okavango or Tarkuni Homestead (on South Africa’s Tswalu game reserve), is also driven by this trend.

On St. Barts, Eden Rock takes this a step further, offering a catalog of 200 privately owned homes dotted around the island. The program is so successful it has spawned both clones (local rival Hotel Le Toiny has its own portfolio of over a dozen) and expansion. Eden Rock operator Oetker is now offering a similar service along the Côte d’Azur. It’s a reminder of that well-worn piece of financial advice: Why buy when you can rent?

Safari Camp: Loapi, Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, South Africa

tour in bhutan

You wouldn’t expect to stumble upon six cutting-edge glass, steel, and canvas structures in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. Unless perhaps you’re within Tswalu, South Africa’s largest private game reserve. The Oppenheimer family, which owns it, has been restoring these lands since 1999. While conservation and sustainability are top of mind here, so are privacy and high design. Loapi , the aforementioned collection of micro camps, is the third and newest addition to this 282,000-acre reserve. It offers a private guide, a butler, and a chef who can cook everything from tapas to curries to freshly baked bread.

The views from the rooms and outdoor terraces are staggering: Grassland and red soil meet the low mountains that jut upward into a cerulean sky. The interiors are stunning, too, appointed with intricately carved wood-paneled walls, cork ceilings, and coffee-colored rounded bouclé couches that beg for a post-safari nap. From $2,428 per person

Beach Resort: Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort, Hawaii

tour in bhutan

When news spread that the posh Rosewood brand would resurrect Hawaii’s beloved Kona Village resort , which was decimated by a tsunami in 2011, there was both celebration and concern. Could the laid-back vibe guests returned for year after year be re-created? By the time it reopened last July, it had Wi-Fi, plus a striking new spa improbably built into the lava flow and a sea-to-table restaurant with an outstanding selection of white Burgundy (both impressive additions).

But the soul of the place lives on at the restored Shipwreck Bar, a beached schooner-turned–watering hole that belonged to the founders. The vessel, where Jim Morrison once infamously consumed a record 21 mai tais, miraculously survived the storm. (Staff joke that the only thing stronger than the drinks is the boat itself.) Take a seat and listen closely enough, and you can overhear guests reminiscing about stays here as long ago as the ’60s. It’s proof that even with modern upgrades, the place can still transport you to the Hawaii of another era. From $1,800

Luxury Adventure: Shinta Mani Mustang, Nepal

tour in bhutan

You don’t have to leave the remote grounds of Nepal’s Shinta Mani Mustang , the third property in architect Bill Bensley’s eponymous hotel collection, to feel immersed in the culture of this ancient mountain kingdom. Guests can join a monk in the on-site puja room for sunrise chants or partake in a healing session with the resident amchi, an 11th-generation doctor of traditional Tibetan medicine. The surrounding powder-dusted peaks are perfectly framed in each bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling windows, the yak-fur-lined bar serves local apple brandy, and the restaurant’s nine-course momo tasting menu schools guests in the region’s staple steamed dumplings.

But hotelier Jason Friedman, a partner in the project, intended the 29-suite retreat to be a cushy base camp. Guests can enjoy immersive excursions, such as a trek to a medieval village believed to be the last place in Mustang where the pre-Buddhist religion of Bon is still practiced, or a lunch of Thakali curry cooked in a local home. The real luxury, Friedman says, is getting to explore a region few people have ever seen. From $1,800

Natural Immersion: andBeyond Punakha River Lodge, Bhutan

tour in bhutan

If you’ve traveled to andBeyond’s African camps, you know to expect the unexpected: Makeshift bars set up near watering holes frequented by elephants and zebras; picnics arranged in the bush as giraffes graze in the distance. So how does the seasoned operator transport that experience to the Bhutanese countryside? At first glance, andBeyond Punakha River Lodge ’s six sumptuous, tentlike lodgings may seem familiar to safari-goers, but the ethos is distinctly local. There are no game drives here; instead, tours lean into the Himalayan kingdom’s rich history and Buddhist traditions: archery lessons, treks to sky-high temples, and visits to secluded mountaintop villages, all surrounded by snowcapped peaks. But (spoiler alert) the surprises continue—a breakfast spread overlooking a temple might await you at the end of an early morning hike, lunch can materialize on a cliff surrounded by colorful prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, and drinks appear on a sandy riverbank as the sun sets over the 17th-century Punakha Dzong monastery. Suites from $890

Historic Conversion: La Palma, Capri, Italy

tour in bhutan

The long-delayed two-and-a-half-year gut renovation of Capri’s oldest hotel , which dates back to 1822, was finally completed last summer. And it was worth the wait.

The 50 or so rooms and suites were reimagined by interior designer Francis Sultana in a palette of pale sherbets. They have every possible amenity—yes, that’s a branded bath pillow—and guests receive a generous gift every night at turndown, from cookies to night masks, as is typical at Oetker-operated hotels. The configurations of the rooms differ wildly, but the splashiest is the 861-square-foot La Palma suite. Social butterflies will prefer the smaller suites on the second floor (numbers 110 to 115) whose terraces have direct access to the new pool.

On an island where sandy beaches are rare, La Palma’s greatest asset is off-site: Its shore club, Da Gioia, is a time- warpishly fabulous hangout offering a jolt of dolce vita glamour, even in midsummer while crowds throng nearby. Book the private cove, which can accommodate up to six people and is thankfully close enough to the restaurant to keep the rosé flowing. And spend at least one evening at the nightclub in the basement, Anema e Core. The branded tambourines you’ll use to tap along to the house band are the best souvenir. From about $2,677

Updated Classic: Maroma Riviera Maya, Mexico

tour in bhutan

Interior designer Tara Bernerd brought her swaggering style to the multimillion-dollar reimagining of this property , the first of Belmond’s historic North American hotels to benefit from the deep pockets of new owner LVMH.

She met the challenge magnificently. Checking into one of the 72 rooms or villas, decorated in a style best described as Mexican midcentury modern, feels like staying at the beachfront home of a sophisticated friend. The airy spaces are heavy on earth tones, with dashes of turquoise and yellow on details such as the floor tiles—made, like 80 percent of the decorative elements, right here in Mexico. The suites are jam-packed with thoughtful touches, too: Take the branded sunglass-cleaning cloth, or the minibar and its full cocktail-making set, plus unisex cotton caftans (not robes) to wear in the room or on the beach.

The Curtis Stone–helmed restaurant, Woodend, is fine, but the food’s just as good at the hotel’s own all-day spot, Casa Mayor. Make sure to order its Catch of the Day in Molcajete, a tart, corn-studded ceviche of locally caught fish. Better yet, make it two. One won’t be enough. From $1,095

Renovation: Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island, Australia

tour in bhutan

In 2020, wildfires incinerated nearly half of Kangaroo Island, the hardscrabble, beautiful landform off the coast of South Australia. Its premier property, Southern Ocean Lodge , was razed; after nearly four years of renovations, it reopened in December. It’s a credit to the architect, Max Pritchard, that few realize this is a close replica of the original. Suites—the only room category—still project like a tentacle from version 2.0 of the airy, central great room. And a sense of residential comfort still dominates. There are books everywhere. The dining room doesn’t take reservations. (Guests simply call ahead to say when they’d like to eat.) The central bar is self-service. Want wine? Just walk into the cellar and take what you like. At oversize resorts, they call this sort of thing “all inclusive,” but here, it’s just easy, the way it would be at home.

Veterans will notice discrepancies. There are now 25, rather than 23, rooms. The bar is longer. There’s a new four-bedroom suite overlooking the lodge. What hasn’t changed are the daily guided excursions through this resilient landscape, rich with penguins, seals, koalas, and of course, kangaroos. From about $2,200

Aegean Retreat: Avant Mar, Paros, Greece

tour in bhutan

Don’t be surprised to see general manager Anna Asimakopoulou floating around this small property in the heart of Naoussa, her shaggy dog, Athena, trailing behind her. Like Mrs. Madrigal of 28 Barbary Lane, she’s equal parts warm and firm, which helps the 38-room property stand out from many of its rivals, where service is slapdash at best. Catch the eye of any staffer, and they’ll smile and offer to help without missing a beat.

Its design looks inward, centered on a 180-foot pool—don’t miss the chance to take a selfie or two at the infinity-edged end nearest the ocean. It’s a new build, which allowed extra amenities to be squeezed into the compact footprint. Matsuhisa Paros, Chef Nobu’s restaurant at the hotel, reopened in June, but there’s also an all-day bakery serving homemade Greek pastries right by reception. A gin-and-tonic-focused bar called the Bridge, the newest addition to the property, offers views of the Aegean and the nearby Naoussa port.

As for the rooms, the best will be one of the seven with a private plunge pool, each of which has a superb view over the beach and to the town beyond. From $772

Local Charm: Violino D’Oro, Venice, Italy

tour in bhutan

Think of this 32-room hotel , which opened in November, as a contrast to the bombastic names that dominate the hotel scene here—one powered by a generosity that only family-run properties can offer. (The jars of candy in the lobby are, dangerously, regularly refilled.) Owner Sara Maestrelli painstakingly restored a trio of buildings minutes from Piazza San Marco, and the gemlike result acts as a tribute to traditional Italian crafts. There’s glass everywhere, from elaborate Murano-blown chandeliers to the keepsake-like key fobs; the headboards are upholstered in custom fabrics by local textile house Rubelli. Even the gold-leather menu holders are made-to-order by Consani e Giannini.

Rooms 21 and 22 don’t connect, but they do share a discreet private staircase, so they’re perfect if you’re traveling in a small group. Or you can dispense with superstition and book room 13, Maestrelli’s favorite, which sits at the heart of the hotel, with its own private terrace hidden from the hubbub below. And yes, there is a golden violin, though it’s easy to overlook, in a glass vitrine right by the entrance. From $865

City Chic: The Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York City

tour in bhutan

For those craving a cozy antidote to sprawling anodyne luxury, the charming Fifth Avenue Hotel has opened its doors at long last. Owner Alex Ohebshalom and designer Martin Brudnizki have transformed a 19th-century McKim, Mead & White building, plus an adjoining new 24-story glass tower, into a colorful and kaleidoscopically eclectic take on clubby Manhattan hotels of yore. This is hospitality with a point of view—specifically, Gilded Age New York through a heady psilocybin buzz. Rooms hum with color, pattern, and texture, from pink and pistachio-mint walls to hand-painted bone china to a Murano-glass chandelier dangling a rainbow-hued harvest of fruits. Several of the 43 suites come with terraces; the sprawling Flaneur penthouse includes an outdoor soaking tub and Japanese garden overlooking the skyline.

The experience is one of dreamlike intimacy—the feeling that at the end of an ornate, Alice in Wonderland hallway sits your own Flatiron pied-à-terre with 24-hour butler service and an on-demand martini cart in the evenings. In true high-low N.Y.C. fashion, the seductively chic Portrait Bar offers both osetra caviar and a hot dog au poivre. Or head upstairs to Andrew Carmellini’s eponymous café, buzzing with Art Deco glamour, where the longtime star chef continues the reverie, serving his impeccably elevated Italian fare beneath a pair of soaring sculptural trees. From $895

Quantcast

I traveled with friends in my early 20s and again in my 40s. I love traveling with girlfriends at different life stages.

  • My friends and I traveled together through Southeast Asia in our 20s.
  • We just took another trip together, this time to Bhutan, nearly two decades later.
  • Though much has changed, our friendships are still strong.

Insider Today

I walked around Singapore Changi Airport feeling like a kid at summer camp for the first time. It was my first trip away from my family in a decade.

"Will I be OK?" I wondered. "What if I feel homesick and want to go home to my children and husband?"

I sat down and checked my backpack for the 10th time to make sure my passport and wallet were still inside. Then, I took a deep breath and wondered why I felt so anxious.

An earlier version of me used to travel alone all the time when I was in my 20s, filled with a naïve optimism that everything would work out. Yet there I was, at 39, feeling completely out of my depth.

I connected to WiFi, and my phone lit up with a message. I felt a rush of relief as I remembered I wasn't alone on the other side of the world. Three of my college friends were heading to Bhutan with me.

They had just touched down from Brisbane and wanted to know where to meet up. "See you at the gate," I wrote, and started making my way through the terminal.

Suddenly, I heard my college bestie call out my name. "Millllllls," she yelled. It was like a scene from a bad romcom, as she came sprinting along the travelator and tackled me. We laughed and hugged, then made our way to the other women.

Three of us are moms who ditched our husbands at home with the kids . The fourth friend decided to join us literally a couple of weeks before the trip, much to our delight.

We've all had vastly different life experiences, but we share an enduring bond — the kind that's formed during those early foundational years and lasts the ages. We met at college and traveled through Cambodia and Vietnam together in our early 20s.

Over the next eight nights, we had the time of our lives in Bhutan. It had been almost 20 years since the four of us had traveled together, but somehow, we picked up right where we left off. Another friend also joined along the way, and she fit in perfectly with the group.

During the holiday, I had so many revelations. The main one was how much I love traveling with girlfriends at different life stages.

We laughed more than I thought possible

There were times when we laughed so much that we cried, starting with our layover in Kathmandu on the way to Bhutan. I had woken up to go to the toilet, and when I reappeared in our twin room, my friend thought I was an intruder. She let out a blood-curdling scream that shook the walls. "It's me, Carmen," I said, then we both collapsed in a fit of hysterics, laughing until our stomachs ached.

Another time, we talked about something serious in a restaurant when the only other patron let out an almighty belch. We all looked at each other, then keeled over with laughter.

Related stories

But the funniest moment of all was when our somewhat conservative Bhutanese guide took us to a hot spring in Gasa and appeared in his very tight undies. Up until that point, he had been wearing his traditional robe, known as a gho.

We were all sitting in the hot springs nearby as he took a 10-minute shower, meticulously scrubbing every inch of his hair and body. My friend piped up something like, "Queue 'Mysterious Girl' by Peter Andre," and we all lost it. It was so immature, but all of us were enjoying ourselves.

We had the best conversations

Another thing I loved was our deep and varied conversations. Nothing had been off limits during our trip together around Southeast Asia , and the same was true during this trip.

We talked about old relationships and current ones; parenting and puberty; religion and life after death. We discussed the merits of early sex education and the importance of teaching our sons about consent.

Sometimes, we chatted about lighter topics like eyelash curlers and brands of face cream, but I enjoyed those conversations, too. Often, we told stories about our earlier trip together, and through shared experiences, we briefly re-lived our youth.

We embraced the comfortable silences

Part of what I found incredible was how easy and familiar it felt to travel with these friends despite such a long gap between holidays.

There were times when we would embrace the comfortable silences while hiking in the mountains, enjoying the silent companionship rather than filling the void with constant chatter.

The silences never felt awkward, but instead offered opportunities for thoughtfulness and reflection, leading to a deeper sense of connection between us.

We rallied together and enjoyed the sisterhood

There's nothing quite like the bond of female friendship , and I really felt the solidarity of sisterhood during our trip. When women come together, they empower one another to be stronger and offer a tremendous well of emotional support.

When one of my friends began her cycle earlier than anticipated on a remote hike, we all rallied together and pooled our sanitary pads to get her through.

When I had a moment of height-induced panic on a hike, my friends reassured me I would be OK and encouraged me to keep going.

When another friend ended up in tears because her daughter had received some bad news, we hugged her and tried to support her through it.

There were so many beautiful moments of connection like these that I will hold in my heart in years to come.

So, what's next for our traveling girl squad ? We all lead very busy lives, and most of us live in different areas of Australia and the world (our fifth friend is based in Hong Kong). It's hard to know when exactly we might have the opportunity to connect again for another overseas adventure.

However, one thing's for sure. The memories of our trip will sustain us until we meet again — and there will be a next time, even if it's another decade in the making.
