Been to all over 5 trips with them. From Grand Canyon, Baja, to 1 month in Alaska. Great drivers. What I like are the healthy foods we all get to make. I usually volunteer to cook so I can eat first! Our whale trip in Baja, a whale got so close to me, that we were able to see its eyes. Yep, they took us to a location where one of us were able to touch the whale. Overall lots of fun. My favorite travelers are European friends that travel solo. I enjoy being with brave adventurous people. Will travel again with Green Tortoise. I recommended everyone Green Tortoise, to the point, I didn't know I was talking to Lyle's son and his son's companion about Green Tortoise at a concert.

Wonderful review! Our food scene is understated, and one of our greatest strengths. We love to cook with the freshest ingredients and it shows. Our tour operators strive to impress with their culinary chops! Just let us know of any dietary restrictions or preferences when you book and we will do our best to accommodate; as this is a group cooking experience you should be present at preparation time to help us help you. Thanks!

after 4 trips I keep coming back. My favorite trip is the Baja whale trip. The whales will swim up to you. This is not a joke. Forget about going on a ocean whale watching trip. The Baja Laguna where the whales breed is the best. I'm a picky eater, and their food is really good. Why? cause they use fresh ingrediants. I'm a vegan and they will do their best for you. If you have an eating issue, it's best to be part of the cooking crew. Oh, traveling while lying down, playing cards, chatting people, reading without getting dizzy on the bus is a great way to go. I also like traveling in groups with other "Europeans". When I was at the BAja trip, there were groups of retired people, and groups of young people in their 20s. .... We all got along very well. Laid back, easy going, team players; my type of crowd.

The way that I want to travel the world. The Green Tortoise is an adventure in every way. It will open you eyes - wide. I guarantee that you will look at the word a little differently, after a trip with Green Tortoise. There are certain things in my life that I don't mind being predictable and repetitive - ie - comfortable bed and Good Earth meals. But there is a part of me that loves the spontaneous. That loves unexpected - life changing- adventures. Which is what Green Tortoise is. In every way. Every one of Green Tortoise's routes and trips have moments of breathtaking beauty. Whether it be the scenery - or the human moments - along the way. The conversations, life lessons and meals, which I shared on my recent Death Valley trip were often just as eye-opening and wondrous - as the majestic natural marble we climbed. As the dazzling orange and rustic red mountain painted terrain, which we gazed at. And the simple beautiful notion of 27 strangers traveling together in a musical enriched bus for four nights and three days, which inspired an epic Thanksgiving weekend. What makes the Green Tortoise so remarkable is the love and energy which goes into it. All of their drivers are unique and inspiring people. They drive the Green Tortoise - because they believe in it. They believe in living life to the fullest. And believe that traveling can be affordable. When you're surrounded by good people like this, passengers from all over the world with different perspectives and stories, delicious healthy food, mother nature at her finest, up-lifting music, and a general - just go for it and with it - attitude - you can't help - but be touched. I will definitely be planning a future Canyons of the West trip. Seriously can't wait. Trust. PS. You have to be open to sacrificing a little personal space (when full = over 30 people on a traveling green - adventure - bound- bus)

Hey there! Are you an introvert who loves adventure and are wondering if you can survive on a bus full of people? This is the review for you! :) A bit about me, so you know if my opinions are possibly relatable to you. I'm on the introverted side, an experienced backpacker, and I'm in my early forties (there were people of all ages on the trip I went on). I like alone time, reading, and adventure. AND, I love the Green Tortoise! Yes, you can find alone time on a bus full of people. And, yes, a planned trip is also appealing for rugged individualists who are capable (and enjoy!) doing things alone. Here's my experience: I went on the Southwest Desert Loop trip. Honestly, the trip started off a bit rough for me. After a pickup in SF, we went to a Safeway so people could buy snacks, use the restroom, etc. Then the bus converted to the sleeper and it seemed like it took a very long time and I was sleepy, cranky, and just wanted to take a sleeping pill, put on my blindfold and earplugs and go to sleep. I finally got to bed around 11 pm (which is super late for me!). BUT, the next morning, when I woke up next to a lovely river for hot coffee and got to eat breakfast, drink coffee, and enjoy the view? That felt magical. The trip was thoughtfully planned and included a bunch of great hikes. Hiking near Sedona, Arizona is LOVELY! Truly breathtaking! There WERE a lot of night drives on this particular trip and there's a balance there: I find night drives tough (pack sleeping pills and earplugs!!!), but I ALSO really like waking up someplace gorgeous. So... The food on the trip was also really great! Downright gourmet on some nights (fish tacos!!!), and always tasty and plentiful. And, now for surviving the green tortoise as an introvert. You're on a bus with a bunch of people. Some are chatty. Some are VERY chatty. I know that seems nightmare-ish, but there will be places on the bus that you can move to to nicely get away from people and create your own bubble. (Pack headphones!) And, make sure that when the bus stops, you have your day bag ready to go and you can bounce off and head out and do a lovely solo hike (or explore whatever town it is by yourself). I found an abundance of alone time. Also, helping with chores is actually great. You can talk with people, but everyone is distracted by doing their task, and it's pretty fun. My recommendations: Take an external battery for your phone! The USB ports on our bus were often full. Take a *very* small night bag that can fit in your pillow case. Put small essentials in it: (advil, a tampon, sleeping pills, earplugs, etc). You will not have access to your day bag at night, so if you wake up with a blinding headache, it's pretty handy to have some advil in your pillow! Take TWO day bags. One larger one that stays on the bus with your wrap, etc. One smaller one that fits inside the large one that you can prep for your day excursion. Pull out the tinier bag and GO! :) All in all, I highly recommend the Green Tortoise for anyone who is flexible, adaptable, and enjoys adventure!

I came back from the Mendocino trip which was so amazing. As a first timer, knowing nothing about the trip, I signed on at the end of the season. Our guide Tess and Doug are wonderful, being locals and knowing their backyard. They did not guide us, but hosted us just like family. The group who signed on was equally laid back and a wonderful group of great conversationalists. It was a 2 day trip, full of activities, beautiful sights and coastlines, Mendocino, Fort Bragg and wine and beer tastings. Hiking and camping in the woods to see the tallest redwood was a WOW! Dinner went without a hitch, with everyone chipping in, and we rolled out the American experience of building a bonfire, and roasting smores for the Europeans. I highly recommend this trip for any locals who has yet to visit Mendocino without having to drive the route themselves. As for the tourists, it is the perfect way to see the beautiful and rugged coastline outside of the big city and experience small town Americana. Kudos to Tess and Doug, and the owners for running such a well oiled program. 2 thumbs up, everyone. Bea Chia

Embrace the hippie within and enjoy the trip of a lifetime! I've been on 2 Tortoise trips, one to Baja and one short trip to Death Valley, and enjoyed both immensely. The trips are cheap, your fellow travelers will be a diverse and wonderfully weird group, food is out of this world, and GT knows tons of off the beaten track places to visit that would take hours of research to discover on your own. The drivers are super cool, and since you're often moving during the night you don't "waste" nights in a static way, you wake up somewhere totally new to see parades of whales, desert wildflowers...whatever! Everyone is expected to help out at mealtime, quarters can be cramped on the bus, hygiene gets laxer as the trips get longer, but when you smell and everyone around you smells you don't smell it anymore. Not for the faint of heart but a rollicking good time-check your brain and worries at the door and get on the bus.

We had a wonderful trip through the Canadian Rockies to Juneau-- great sights & hiking, delish food, & a whole bunch of new friends of all ages & many nationalities. Highly recommend joining this magical bus trip next year.

Did you know that straight hair can make dreadlocks naturally? All you have to do is avoid washing it for nine days. I learned this life lesson on a Green Tortoise trip. I've taken three trips with Green Tortoise-Mexico in '99, Yosemite in '00, and Death Valley in '01. If you're young and looking for very cheap travel with an international crew, you can't go wrong. A couple of things to keep in mind-if you're uptight, this probably won't be a fit. If you expect a tour where everything will be on time, look elsewhere. If you like to smoke and want a party bus where you can drink your body weight, you've come to the right place. The friend that I met on the Mexico trip hosted me for a week when I first moved to San Francisco.

Traveling with the Green Tortoise yielded some of my greatest memories, and I still have many friends from this amazing adventures!

I don't like to spend my precious time writing these long yelp reviews, however, feel it is my social responsibility to reveal how my Green Tortoise Tour went. I am lucky the trip was only 3 days. I decided to give it a try with a short trip, that way I could determine if I wanted to take a more extensive one later to Alaska later. I want to preface this by saying that I worked construction for years, 'living off the land' so to speak, like a gypsies, tent camping, while building homes in the mountains. As for their pre-trip detail, I expected that they would at least ask customers if they had any communicable diseases (as they do on public tours, via cruise ships), before accepting any payment. Unfortunately not. I discovered there was a gal on my trip that had a bad cold. During the trip I asked her when she noticed her symptoms come on. Turned out she was already sick a day before the trip. So of course, being that we are living in the bus like sardines, I caught her rhinovirus and was feeling "off" starting day 1, and had a difficult time on the hike, and by day 2 and 3 I was miserable. On top of that I noticed that no one was washing their hands during food prep (wondering where have their hands been all day?) I suggested to one of the girls that we should wash the vegetables before cutting them, and she said that she was told that we don't need to as they will be cooked anyway. Huh?? So, as a result, I ended up now, not only with a rhinovirus, but also continual diarrhea! Not fun! We were allowed to use the bus bathroom the last evening only, so all night I had to weave my way over sleeping people to the bathroom in one direction, and over sleeping people in the other direction to fill my water bottle. I would say 10 times total. Of course I didn't sleep one wink but at that point I didn't expect to. When we stopped in SF by a grass field, to allow everyone continue sleeping till daybreak, I chose to get off the bus because I was very nauseous and had abdominal pain. I walked around the field for over an hour massaging my stomach trying to get some relief. ( BTW, I work presently in healthcare). I was very happy when we arrived back at the GT Hostel and had my ride pick me up.... lost 8 more days recovering after the trip. Not fun. When I got home I was curious if I was the only one who experienced this. So I read past reviews and found this online. " [...since this is a camping trip designed for tough people, they for example didn't let us wash the vegetables that were supposed to be cooked, stating that it will be a waste of time since the vegetables were to be cooked anyway, please consider that these vegetables were purchased in Mexico, and were full of pesticides, and mud, so, for fear of being called a sissy, or a freak, I did succumb, and didn't wash the vegetables as directed, they did wash the fruits for the salads, However, speaking of the salads, before preparing the meals, they set up three hand washing basins that we were supposed to wash our hands in, the first one was the dirty one, the second was the medium dirty, and the third was the final supposedly squeaky clean basin, this worked for the first one minute, few minutes later, all basins started to appear filthy black, when we said something about changing the water, we were told that we don't have much water, when we suggested to wash our hands in the sink of the nearby bathrooms instead, we were told that we have to wash our hands in front of the tour leader, so that she can make sure everybody washed her/ his hands, so, basically, we were asked to dip our hands in a filthy dirty bucket before preparing the food, needless to say, I got food poisoning not long after the trip started, and since I didn't have health insurance back then, it took me months to get over whatever happened to my intestines.] " My suggestion is if you choose go, carry an arsenal of medications when going on GT trips, more than what you'd take on any other trip. I'm not telling you whether to go or not, but beware of what you may encounter. In the past, have traveled 3 months solo around the South Island of NZ on my bike, and didn't get sick once. So just in case you thought maybe I have a weak constitution, this thought may put that to rest ; ) Good, luck and wish you all happy travels! (PS: I have no complaints about the wonderful, personable, and energetic bus driver/leader who is only following the directions given to him by GT Tours)

Jan 10, 2019

Thank you for your feedback. We take your complaints seriously because we provide multi-day to month-long adventures to hundreds of people throughout the year. We have reworked our sanitation policy to include a more scrutinized detailing of hand washing procedures, as well as adding hand sanitizer (that always stays on the buses) to the tables during meal prep. The camp kitchens are being supplied with gloves that are available to passengers to use. We are also expanding our training for drivers and guides on how to be more scrupulous about keeping passengers who may be under the weather out of the kitchen. A large number of the vegetables that we purchase are from retailers like Costco and are pre-washed. We oftentimes do not wash these to reduce the risk of contaminating them with new microbes due to our outdoor kitchen environment. The FDA recommendation says, "Many pre-cut, bagged, or packaged produce items are pre-washed and ready-to-eat. If so, it will be stated on the packaging, and you can use the produce without further washing." We are reiterating to drivers and guides that vegetables that are not pre-washed should be rinsed before cooking them. It is unfortunate that your vacation was thwarted by sickness. We are continuing our review of our own and other company policies about screening passengers for illness. It is a sensitive subject because we don't feel justified in turning passengers away (who may have traveled thousands of miles to go on a trip) for a "rhinovirus," aka common cold, that may or may not be contagious. We certainly do not want other riders to feel they will be exposed to sickness and urge our customers to consider others when deciding to go on our trips. Our passengers are oftentimes well-traveled, responsible and compassionate to their fellow riders. While we appreciate your business, we do understand that our style of travel is not for everyone. We were happy to extend and glad that you accepted our 80% refund for this trip. Thank you again for your time.

7/2/2018 I was trying to book an Alaska tour trip for 2019. I made my home work and found out where I could buy an insulated jacket for that special trip since I live in Florida and I do not wear winter clothes. I called the company for additional information and left messages since they do not answer the phone right away. When today the owner Lyle Kent called me back he questioned me if I could pi on the wood and use a hole for toilet. He wanted to make sure i was the right participant for that adventure tour. I responded positively since I am a world traveler and I camped in the past. Those answers were not good enough for him. When I asked him how many participants would go on that trip, he just said that question was not relevant to the tour and instead of answering, he told me that I won't be fit for that kind of trip. Then why asking me those questions? He rudely suggested me to first try a shorter one. LK wanted to dictate me what to see. He was really rude. I am not the only one who complained about Green Turtoise. Last year, the person who introduced me to that tour company also had ended her relationship with GT for the same mediocre customer service she received while she was their customer. When she wrote a review about a tour and the company did not like it, the company removed her name from their participant's list. Yes she was denied to join any further tour. I was only trying to book a trip with GT. That trip was not cheap at approx. $2,746 for 27 days and I was entitled to ask questions. The other problem with GT is the lack of staff members answering customer's correspondence. If a tour company has not time to respond to inquiries, they should close their business. Well good that I found out before than later!

Awaken in the “ Jewel of the Northwest ” and grab a coffee from the first Starbucks in Pike Place Market.  Take a trip to the top of the Space Needle or visit the Museum of Pop Culture.  Perhaps you want to visit the Chihuly Garden & Glass exhibit or just stroll along the waterfront.  Options seem endless in the Emerald City with a full day of exploration.

Get your first glimpse of the behemoth mountains of British Columbia after we cross the border into Canada.  Watch as the beautiful scenery begins to change. Our camp is nestled in a forest of Douglas fir, pine and aspen trees.  This evening, embark on a hike along the lake’s shoreline and take a dip!

Optional Swim

The journey continues through the inland temperate rainforest. The old-growth forest of cedars and hemlock trees surrounding Revelstoke, British Columbia guides us to the famous mountain town. Take a walk along the Columbia River and meander the quaint downtown’s Grizzly Plaza. In the evening, sink into Canyon Hot Springs .

Glacier National Park of Canada reveals itself today.  Hike to some magnificent waterfalls and watch the mountains rise higher as we roll through the Canadian Rockies.  This evening, arrive in Banff National Park. Our campsite near Lake Louise allows ample time to explore the alluring nature surrounding the lake’s azure water.

Rent a canoe for a scenic paddle or just enjoy the view from the luxurious Fairmont Chateau . Sip tea at high altitude after a self-guided hike through the dense subalpine forests to Lake Agnes – a hidden gem complete with a teahouse, lovely turquoise waters, a steep wooden staircase and a waterfall.  Hike another one of Banff National Park’s most beloved trails to views of spectacular ice hanging at the scenic Plain of Six Glaciers .  Or just enjoy the view and people watching at the luxurious Fairmont Chateau .

Start the day with a hike along the dramatic catwalks of Johnston Canyon to the cascading upper waterfalls.  Discover the natural beauty created by thousands of years of water erosion through the limestone bedrock.  Later, a short drive brings us to the historic town of Banff, where we’ll dine out on the town before we polish off the evening relaxing those sore hiking muscles in Banff Upper Hot Springs .

Meals Included: Breakfast

We’ll travel through the vast wilderness, alongside gigantic mountains, on the Icefields Parkway to the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks .  A stop to stretch our legs sends us on a journey through time on an interpretive walk up to the face of the Athabasca Glacier in the Columbia Icefields . Beautifully striped erratics, or pebbles and boulders carried by the glacier, decorate the trail along the way.  Tonight, we’ll spend an evening getting to know the quaint, riverfront town of Jasper, Alberta .

Meals Included: Breakfast / Lunch

Explore the mountain wilderness of Jasper National Park .  Spectacular 165-foot sheer limestone walls of the impressive Maligne Canyon guide you on an unforgettable hike across six bridges suspended over the thundering Maligne River .  This afternoon, soak in the inviting Miette Hot Springs or keep moving on the Sulphur Skyline Trail for sweeping views of the endless wilderness.

Meals Included: Lunch / Dinner

Optional Soak / Showers Available

Venturing north through Alberta , we’ll make a quick stop in Grande Prairie for reprovisioning prior to entering northern British Columbia’s expansive wilderness.  Today, at Mile 0 of the Alaska-Canadian Highway , better known as the AlCan, we head west towards the Last Frontier!

The adventure continues along this road that was constructed in World War II as a supply route linking the contiguous United States with Alaska.  The AlCAn was constructed in less than 8 months by a crew of over 10,000 Army Corp of Engineers.  Learn more at our stop at Fort Nelson with a visit to the Heritage Museum.  By the evening, prepare dinner and camp at the pristine Summit Lake.

Stone Mountain Provincial Park has so much to offer!  Embark on a hike to the summit of a mountain for unbelievable views or go on a more leisurely hike to an alpine lake.  Perhaps you wish to spend the day lounging at camp. However you spend the day, the views will be rewarding!

As we continue through the Northern Rocky Mountains , stunning vistas greet us around every curve.  Keep on the lookout for mountain goats and dall sheep as we wind our way towards Muncho Lake and Liard Hot Springs .  This evening, spend some time relaxing in the natural, steaming pools.

Drive Night

Welcome to the Yukon Territory !  Our destination today is within the Carcross / Tagish First Nation .  We will visit the smallest desert in the world, have the opportunity to learn all about the region’s rich cultural and Indigenous history, and explore the Gold Rush history of the area.  A day in Carcross will leave you humbled beneath towering totem poles and surrounded by behemoth mountains.

Alaska beckons!  Cross the border into Skagway, Alaska , a small town with a big personality.  Whether you choose to ride the bus or hop on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Carcross, the ride is undoubtedly one of the most scenic on Earth! Once you arrive in Skagway, opportunities are endless.  From hiking to dog mushing to history tours, there’s not much you can’t do here.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Enjoy a morning exploring Skagway’s quaint downtown shops or take a hike out to Yakutania Point.  This afternoon, a ferry ride on the Alaska Marine Highway brings us to the state capitol, Juneau ! It’s not uncommon to see porpoise, whales and other marine life along the way.  Plus, the views of waterfalls and glaciers along the Lynn Canal are spectacular!

*In Juneau, you will be staying at a hostel or hotel of your choice. We’ll recommend some of our favorite lodging options upon booking.

Day 22 & 23

You have lots of options!  Whether you choose to hike the mossy forests surrounding the city, spend the day touring Tracy Arm Fjord or Glacier Bay National Park , going sport fishing, or shopping for souvenirs, there’s something for everyone in Juneau!  You may wish to stretch your sea legs at the Mendenhall Glacier . Take a hike for dramatic views from above or walk straight to a waterfall pounding into Mendenhall Lake at its base. You’ll already be prepared because your guide and driver will help you find activities that fit best for you before our arrival on the ferry.

Hostel Nights

We’re back on the ferry for another breathtaking voyage up the Inside Passage.  A cruise through the glacier-carved cliffs and waterfalls of the Lynn Canal brings us to Haines and Port Chilkoot .  This small town appeals to the adventure enthusiast in us all.  After a walk to the gorgeous Chilkoot Lake , we’ll camp surrounded by Douglas fir and Sitka spruce trees and beneath craggy mountain peaks. Don’t forget to search the treetops for nesting birds.  Haines is home to the largest congregation of American bald eagles in the world!

Opportunity abounds!  An optional flight-seeing tour of Glacier Bay will leave you elated.  Words cannot describe the thrill of seeing the expansive, wild and frozen earth from above.  Some may choose to take a hike to the top of Mount Rapinski for panoramic views of the Lynn Canal and Chilkat River .  You may even decide to enjoy a walk around Haines’ quaint downtown and get to know the locals from a stool at the Fogcutter Bar.

Showers Available

You’ll be reminded of the enormity of the world on a journey through wide open spaces of untouched wilderness and near solitude.  Today provides another great chance for spotting bears, Dall sheep, moose and mountain goats!  Kluane National Park in the Yukon Territory is our destination and it won’t take long to recognize why it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Plunge into Kathleen Lake to get your blood pumping before sharing a delicious Tortoise dinner together.

Optional Swim

Your self-guided hiking adventure is to the “King’s Throne.”  Once you reach the alpine cirque – a natural amphitheater formed by glacial erosion – you may choose to continue the adventure to feel on top of the world.  You’ll be rewarded with unrivaled views of Kathleen Lake and the breathtaking Saint Elias Mountain Range , home to the world’s largest non-polar ice fields.  Easy strolls around the lovely lake are also an option and just as rewarding!

Enjoy a little break from the wilderness in the capital city of the Yukon Territory, Whitehorse .  This city is home to one of the toughest sled dog races in the world, the 1,000 mile Yukon Quest. Check out the historic riverboat SS Klondike , learn about native cultures or take a trip into the Gold Rush era at the MacBride Museum .  Later, we’ll head for camp and another chance to soak at Takhini Hot Springs .

Optional Soak / Showers Available

Jagged granite peaks, idyllic alpine lakes and tundra landscapes roll by in the window frames as we make our way to Dawson City . This stretch of road is well-known for wildlife sightings!  A stop atop Midnight Dome will give you a chance to see our campsite from afar, as well as the mighty Yukon River .

Step back in time to the Klondike Gold Rush in Dawson City.  Meander the historic town, visiting museums and local shops or take a hike to Midnight Dome by day.  Check out the Paddle Wheel Graveyard or relax by the riverfront. By night, maybe you’ll strike it rich at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall .  Even if you don’t win big, stick around for the can-can inspired show!  Some may even join the Sourtoe Cocktail Club at the Sourdough Saloon.

We’ll cross the border into Alaska , traveling over the Top Of The World Highway .  A stop in the historical little town of Chicken, Alaska, established in the 1930s for prospecting and mining, will give you a look into real small town life.  In 2010, the official population was seven! Today, the few residents invite travelers to their home to relax and enjoy the intriguing history. Take a tour of the dredge, indulge in a rootbeer float on the porch of the local cafe or have a cocktail at the local’s favorite place to hang.

Awaken to a world of opportunity at Chena Hot Springs Resort .  Whether you’re up for a hike, a soak, horseback ride or sled dog experience, you won’t be bored here!  Bundle up for an optional tour of the world’s largest year-round ice environment, the Aurora Ice Museum.   This day will certainly leave you feeling rejuvenated and relaxed!

Fairbanks, “the Gateway to the Bush,” is well known for being one of the largest cities in Alaska.  Visit the Fairbanks Visitor Center and explore the unbelievable Museum of the North at the University of Alaska.  This evening, get a glimpse of the true Alaskan lifestyle in Nenana .

Days 34 & 35

We greet the morning at Denali National Park , the climax of this adventure!  The sprawling tundra is our playground for the next few days!  Venture out on the diverse trails from the park’s visitor center, take a ranger-led hike or embark on a bus journey deep into the park.  Don’t miss the chance to see moose, bears, caribou, foxes and Dall sheep in their natural habitat!  You might take the opportunity to go on a whitewater rafting adventure through the picturesque landscape on the Nenana River .  However you choose to spend our extended stay, you’re guaranteed to take away treasured memories of the raw beauty and trackless wilderness stretching beneath “The Great One!”
