The Sydney Opera House is a topmost favorite spot that tourists look forward to visiting during their Sydney trip. Located on the east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (Port Jackson), New South Wales, Australia, the Opera House was even designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007 and it is one of the finest places to visit in Sydney. Its architecture is a fusion of modernist, and ancient influences, which attracts over 8.2 million visitors every year. The eye-grabbing roof structure that looks like a white sail-shaped shell makes it the best-known landmark. It is a multipurpose place used for various performing arts facilities. It can seat only about 1,500 people during one show to offer an exceptional experience to the audience. The 2,679-seat Concert Hall is the most abundant space here that hosts choir performances, symphony concerts, and famous music shows. You can head to the Opera Theatre to watch popular Opera, dance performances and ballet shows. Further, the building houses three different sized theaters for presenting film screenings, stage plays, and shorter musical acts.On the southeastern end of the building is the Forecourt that hosts outdoor performances. There are also a professional recording studio and restaurants in the complex. Thus, if you ever plan to take a tour of Sydney, the Sydney Opera House is worth a visit to witness impressive structure as well as performances.Click Here to Book Now: Sydney Opera House Guided TourHistory of Sydney Opera HouseThe location of the Opera House earlier used to be a railroad yard of Sydney. The tale of the Sydney Opera House started in 1948 when the Sydney Opera head beckoned for a new home for the opera company. Eugene Goossens, who was the resident conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, recognized the need for a musical facility in the city. He wanted it to be home to the symphony orchestra, opera, and chamber music groups. In order to make the city identified as a world cultural capital, the New South Wales government approved his proposal. It assembled the Opera House Committee in 1954 to pick a site that further recommended Bennelong Point. A proposal request was sent to architects all across the world to submit designs for the Opera House. Finally, the design sketched out by Danish architect Jørn Utzon was declared a winner by renowned American architect Eero Saarinen. As the construction work started, people had no idea how to convert the design plan of Utzon into reality. There were political hurdles, too, during the project. The construction process slowed down certain times due to lack of funds, engineers got frustrated, and politicians doubted the idea of making the Opera House. It had a $7 million cost estimation, but actual cost rounded up to more than $100 million. So, with the proper strategies and solving the difficulties, Opera House completed in1973.Click Here to Book Now: Legoland Melbourne Tickets

Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a colossal structure which took the efforts of over 1400 workers and a time span of 8 years. The bridge was put together using over 6 million hand-driven rivets into 53,000 tonnes of steel, thus completing the construction of the world's largest steel arch Bridge. A unique fact about this bridge is that it is continuously being painted mostly to protect it from outer elements and due to its humongous size by the time the painting is done it is time to start over and this cycle is unending. The steel arch of the Bridge actually changes in size; sometimes up-to 18 cm change in its height can be seen. The Bridge's workers and caretakers once included the famous Australian Actor Paul Hogan as a rigger and his job was to erect platforms so the painters could come. The arch of the Bridge is open to climbing and has had over 3 million visitors since 1998 that came for this adventurous trip. The view from the top of the arch is mesmerizing and unbeatable. Approximately 80 % of the steel used in the bridge was actually imported from the United Kingdom and this means that the steel has traveled halfway across the world to make this bridge. History of Harbour BridgeThe plans for building this bridge were proposed originally in 1815 by Francis Greenway to Governor Lachlan Macquarie. He even wrote a letter to an Australian newspaper in 1825, elaborating on the need for a bridge to connect the two sides of the harbor. Though his idea remained in public memory, it did not end up being executed. In 1840, Robert Brindley, who was a naval architect, proposed a floating bridge, and in 1857 Engineer Peter Henderson ended up designing one of the first drawings. Finally, John Bradfield, who is now known as the father of the bridge, became the "Chief Engineer of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Metropolitan Railway Construction" in 1914. Initially, he had proposed a suspension bridge at the location, but later after visiting New York due to the First World War, and got inspired by the architecture and decided to build an arch bridge instead. This construction too was delayed, and finally took place between 1923 and 1932 when the bridge finally opened for the public. Checkout and Book Now: Sydney Harbour Cruise

Sydney’s Luna Park listed for sale, tipped to fetch $70m price tag

The iconic Sydney landmark has been placed on the market, with reports the sale price could go as high as $70m.

Sydney’s iconic Luna Park has been listed for sale, with the multimillion-dollar listing expected to generate heavy domestic and international interest.

The Milsons Point amusement park could sell for up to $70m, with CBRE agents Simon Rooney, James Douglas and Paul Ryan running the campaign.

“Trophy assets such as Luna Park are tightly held and rarely traded, with the campaign providing an opportunity to secure a world-class entertainment, event and experience destination with further upside,” Mr Rooney said.

Expressions on interest will close in late-August and the park will continue running, business-as-usual, during the sales process.

The site is owned by Canadian construction heavyweight Brookfield under a long-term lease that expires in 2040; however, under NSW legislation it must remain an entertainment precinct and cannot be redeveloped into residential dwellings.

Announcing the sale, Luna Park Sydney chief executive John Hughes spoke to the park’s commercial value.

“The business has undergone a strategic transformation, with a $40m upgrade during the last four years adding new rides and immersive experiences, both of which are driving record visitation,” he said.

“Our outstanding management team is pursuing a strong pipeline of new opportunities that will further add value to the business.”

Modelled after New York’s famed Coney Island, the Sydney site opened in 1935 and is now

home to 17 rides, a heritage-listed Coney Island funfair and a Crystal Palace and Big Top event space.

In 2016, the NSW government paid Brookfield $3.2m to buy back a 500sq m clifftop site, which has since been turned into a public park.

At the time, then finance minister Dominic Perrottet spoke glowingly of “returning” the site to the people of NSW and said it would “encourage foot traffic along the clifftop and provide locals and visitors with new views of our harbour”.

Iconic Sydney theme park Luna Park up for sale

Sydney's iconic harbourside theme park, Luna Park, has been put up for sale, with the asking price believed to be in the region of $70 million.

The land the venue is located on is owned by state government entity the Luna Park Reserve Trust, and must remain an entertainment venue even after the sale.

Canadian asset manager Brookfield has confirmed it is selling the amusement park through local real estate agency CBRE.

"The sale presents a unique opportunity to secure the Luna Park business in a globally recognised Sydney landmark underpinned by outstanding investment fundamentals and a strong brand," CBRE's Simon Rooney said.

"Trophy assets such as Luna Park are tightly held and rarely traded, with the campaign providing an opportunity to secure a world-class entertainment, event and experience destination with further upside."

Luna Park Sydney was first opened in October 1935 following the success of the original theme park of the same name in New York.

It was shut down on several occasions, including after a deadly fire on the Ghost Train ride in 1979, in 1988 for renovation, and in 1996 following a legal stoush with nearby residents over noise complaints and financial troubles.

It reopened in 2004, and has since been listed on the NSW Heritage Register.

"Since opening in 1935, Luna Park has played an important role in Sydney's social and cultural fabric," Luna Park CEO John Hughes said.

"The business has undergone a strategic transformation, with a $40 million upgrade during the last four years adding new rides and immersive experiences, both of which are driving record visitation.

"Our outstanding management team is pursuing a strong pipeline of new opportunities that will further add value to the business."

It currently has 17 rides plus the heritage-listed Coney Island funhouse, as well as the 3000-capacity Big Top music and event venue.

Brookfield has owned the park for two decades, but said the time was right for it to pass to new ownership.

"We have been proud owners of Luna Park Sydney for the last 20 years and have invested $40 million since 2019 to enhance its operations," Brookfield Managing Director and head of real estate investments in Australia Ruban Kaneshamoorthy said.

"As we focus our Australian portfolio on core assets, it's time for Luna Park to transition to new custodians, who can steer the business through to its next phase of growth and ensure it remains an icon of the Harbour City."

Sydney theme park Luna Park has gone on sale for $70 million.

Luna Park Sydney listed for sale for first time in two decades, expected to sell for tens of millions

Luna Park's entrance is a big smiling clown

Sydney's Luna Park is being put up for sale for the first time in two decades, with a price tag expected to be in the tens of millions of dollars.

The heritage-listed amusement park on Sydney's harbour foreshore opened in 1935 and remains one of the city's most recognisable landmarks.

Investment firm Brookfield acquired Luna Park Sydney in 2007 as part of its acquisition of builder Multiplex.

Luna Park Sydney CEO John Hughes said it was the right time to sell.

"The business is in really great shape," Mr Hughes said.

"We've had a couple of years of extreme growth with new immersive experiences launched here at Luna Park Sydney and our shareholders think now is the right time to go on market."

Martin Sharp

Sydney's version of Luna Park was based on the concept of the "first" Luna Park which opened at Coney Island in New York in 1903.

American entrepreneur Herman Phillips brought the idea to Australia and opened Luna Park in Melbourne in 1912 and Luna Park Glenelg in Adelaide in 1930.

Mr Phillips won a tender to develop the site at North Sydney in 1935 and dismantled the amusement rides at the Glenelg site and transported them to Sydney.

Luna Park protected by unique legislation

Mr Hughes said the amusement park had played an "important role in Sydney's social and cultural fabric" and remained protected by legislation.

"The park is protected by parliamentary legislation and is one of only two parks globally that is protected by this type of legislation," he said.

"Meaning that Luna Park Sydney must remain an amusement park for all of Sydney and Sydneysiders to enjoy."

Sydney's Luna Park opened to immediate success and remained popular throughout the wartime period of the 1940s.

The site was sold a number of times over the years and by 1975 it was operating on a weekly basis because the managers were unable to negotiate a long-term lease.

The park was shut down when its Ghost Train caught fire and burnt down on June 9, 1979, killing six children and one adult.

Luna Park Sydney reopened in 1982 and again in 1995 before reopening for a final time in 2004.

International real estate firm CBRE has been contracted to oversee the sale.

Sydney’s Luna Park goes on sale for first time in two decades

luna park sydney

Words:  Bea Mitchell

| 2 min read

Expressions of interest are due by late August

Sydney’s iconic Luna Park is listed for sale for the first time in two decades. The heritage-listed amusement park is expected to sell for AU$70 million.

Located on Sydney’s harbour foreshore, Luna Park opened back in 1935. It was last acquired in 2007 by global investment firm Brookfield, when the company acquired Luna Park’s then-owner Multiplex. Brookfield operates the park, buildings and car park.

Luna Park Sydney CEO John Hughes said in a new statement: “The business has undergone a strategic transformation, with a $40m upgrade during the last four years adding new rides and immersive experiences , both of which are driving record visitation.

“Our outstanding management team is pursuing a strong pipeline of new opportunities that will further add value to the business.”

Commercial real estate firm CBRE has been contracted to oversee the sale. CBRE’s Simon Rooney said: “The sale presents a unique opportunity to secure the Luna Park business in a globally recognised Sydney landmark underpinned by outstanding investment fundamentals and a strong brand.

“Trophy assets such as Luna Park are tightly held and rarely traded, with the campaign providing an opportunity to secure a world-class entertainment, event and experience destination with further upside.”

Luna Park is home to 17 amusement rides, including family-friendly attractions, thrill rides and an anchor Intamin coaster, the Big Dipper. It also includes the heritage-listed Coney Island and the Big Top entertainment venue.

Luna Park is “a major player now”

“It’s a different park, and we’re a major player now. To my mind, we’ve set the park up for the next 85 years,” Luna Park’s managing director  Peter Hearne  told blooloop in late 2022.

Luna Park will operate as normal during the sale process. Expressions of interest in the leasehold are due by late August.

In December, the park introduced its new Dream Circus immersive experience, a $15m attraction using state-of-the-art technologies like 360-degree projections, blockbuster surround sound, and holograms.
