Or, with more time, allow the opportunity for spontaneous exploration—road tripping throughout the country offers scenic views almost everywhere, and you might pull over for an elephant sighting or two along the way!

Kandy, a major city in Sri Lanka’s hill country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations and one corner of the country’s Cultural Triangle. It’s surrounded by mountains of rainforest and tea plantations and is home to a beautiful lake within the city. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred temple that houses Buddha’s tooth; wander the city’s colorful streets, and admire the architecture while sampling food from the many street vendors; walk around the lake for scenic views of the lake itself and also the colorful buildings that dot the hillsides around it; and make the quick drive outside of the city to the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens to visit its orchid house and its spice garden, the latter of which will take you on an olfactory tour of the country’s native spices. 

This massive rock formation is not only a breathtaking sight to take in as you approach, jutting up from the flat lands that surround it but also a place of cultural and historical significance. The UNESCO World Heritage site was a fort and palace that dates back to the fifth century. A network of winding staircases and paths will lead you to the top of the rock if you’re game to do the 1,217-step climb. Along the way, you’ll get panoramic views of the valley around you, you’ll pass ancient paintings by monks on the rock walls, and learn about the kingdom that once called this rock home. If you plan on making the entire climb (which we highly recommend), arrive at the park at opening time—you’ll avoid the afternoon heat and beat most of the crowds.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, one of the three corners of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and the current capital city of the North Central Province, was the first ancient capital in Sri Lanka, thriving for more than 1,300 years until it was abandoned in 993. Tourists visit this UNESCO World Heritage site to explore the well-preserved ruins and significant Buddhist history. Several dagobas, distinctive dome-shaped memorials, remain in the city, one of which is said to house Buddha’s collarbone. Another important site is the Bodhi tree found in the Mahamewna Gardens —it’s the oldest known human-planted tree in the world, and it grew from the southern branch of a sacred fig tree in India, the tree under which Gautama Buddha was said to have gained enlightenment.

The third corner of the Cultural Triangle , Polonnaruwa became the second capital after Anuradhapura was abandoned. Like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is a draw for visitors interested in touring the city’s history and ruins, including those of the royal palace and other royal spaces, the quadrangle (a raised, walled-off area of monuments and Buddha statues), and dagobas. You’ll undoubtedly spot many monkeys (toque macaques) in the area, and that population of native, endangered monkeys was featured in Disney’s nature documentary, “Monkey Kingdom.” 

Yala National Park

Yala National Park, located along the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is the most visited national park in the country, primarily because of the chance to spot the leopards in the area—it is home to one of the largest concentrations of leopards in the world. (The land became a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and then a national park in 1938.) Although it comprises five blocks, only two of them are open to the public for safari to preserve and protect the majority of the land. Between February and July is the best time to visit; during these months, the lower water levels bring more animals out in the open searching for water. However, the park can get crowded in these peak months, and higher traffic through the park can lessen your chances of spotting one of the elusive leopards. Even so, you’ll still have the opportunity to see elephants, crocodiles, and water buffaloes.

Minneriya National Park

Sri Lanka has plenty of safari opportunities, but Minneriya National Park is known for having the world's largest gatherings of Asian elephants. Previously an elephant sanctuary, the land was converted to a national park in 1997, and Asian elephants still freely roam the grounds in large herds. While you'll likely get a glimpse of several whenever you visit, the dry season from June to September is the best time to visit. This is when the elephants (sometimes as many as 300) will congregate around the reservoir. It might be most famous for these elephant sightings, but the park is also home to more than 170 species of birds, leopards, monkeys, and other wildlife.

Many tourists skip Colombo to set off for the country’s beautiful nature destinations, but the capital city deserves some of your time . Colombo comprises several distinct neighborhoods that showcase the old and new—from ancient temples and colonial architecture to modern skyscrapers and city parks. It’s easy (and recommended) to wander and simply take in the sights as you go. One impressive architectural sight you won’t be able to miss is the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid (also known as the Red Mosque), a red and white mosque in Colombo’s Pettah neighborhood. Admiring it from the outside is intriguing enough, but if you want to go inside, ensure you’ve dressed appropriately; women need to cover their hair, arms, and legs. 

This fortified old city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka is another of the country’s impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of the best things to do is walk along the fort’s ramparts that give you a view out to the water and inward toward the fort and city. You can also take a self-guided tour of the fort to learn about its history and architecture. Although the fort is the main attraction for visitors to the area, Galle is a prime destination for shopping as well; wander the pedestrian-friendly streets to check out the many art galleries, upscale markets, and boutique stores selling clothes, jewelry, souvenirs, and home goods.

Nuwara Eliya

Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest exports, so a trip to the rolling hills of tea country is well worth your time. Nuwara Eliya boasts hundreds of acres of tea plantations and several tea production facilities you can visit to learn about the entire tea-making process, from planting to picking and steeping at home. Once you’ve had your fill of tea, be sure to explore the other gorgeous surroundings of Nuwara Eliya, such as the manicured and well-maintained Victoria Park, Lake Gregory for a day on the water, or a lakeside picnic, or the beautiful, 350-foot tall Ramboda Falls.

As one of the main beach destinations in the country, Mirissa attracts those looking for a laid-back, leisurely vacation of days lounging on the sand and nights out on the town. The South Asian island nation of Sri Lanka offers visitors a dizzying array of things to see and do. You can experience tourist attractions like the towering new Lotus Tower in the capital city of Colombo , or see elephants living their best life in the forest at Minneriya National Park. There are also outdoor attractions like doing a leopard-watching safari at Yala National Park or hiking a pilgrimage trail at night to see the sunrise on the summit of Adam's Peak.

All these exciting things to do are joined with some of the world's most beautiful natural landscapes offering varied environments, from tropical beaches to mountains to rainforests. Add in thousands of years of culture, interesting foreign colonial influence, very friendly people, beautiful beach resorts and you get one of the world's great vacation destinations.

This is where you can do a safari experience Sri Lankan style. The huge national park borders the Indian Ocean and has a wide range of different ecosystems. From the marine environment of the coastline to grasslands to tropical rainforests inland.

People come to see the park's elephants, leopards, and crocodiles. Leopards are the easiest animal to see, as Yala has the highest "leopard density" in the world. There are many elephants, too, and you're likely to encounter them on the roads within the park, as they use them to get around, too! There are also over 200 bird species that make their home in the park area, including several endemic to Sri Lanka.

Aside from the fauna and flora, the park is home to two historic and very popular religious pilgrimage sites. The temples of Situlpahuwa and Magul Vihara draw four times as many visitors to the park as the animals do.

Yala National Park is on the southeast coast of the island near the city of Hambantota. Buttala is the nearby town, and you can stay there if you want to explore the park over multiple days. A stay there is also a cool way to experience real, rural life in Sri Lanka.

Also in the city of Kandy (right next to the National Museum of Kandy), this temple, and the relic it houses, is one of the most sacred places on Earth for those of the Buddhist faith.

The relic, believed to be a tooth of the Buddha, also has an influence on the politics of Sri Lanka, as whoever possesses the tooth is supposed to be the rightful ruler of the country. The Temple of the Tooth is part of the royal palace complex.

There are rituals performed at the temple three times a day, with a special ritual bathing of the relic on Wednesdays. The holy water that results from the bathing is believed to have healing powers.

This smaller national park is mainly a popular tourist attraction for seeing elephants. Its small size, less than 120 square miles, and its large population of more than 250 elephants mean it's guaranteed you will see them.

Located about 100 miles from Columbo in the south-central part of the island, Udawalawe National Park is also a very important sanctuary for waterfowl and is a great place to visit for bird-watching.

Getting there is easy, and most people visit on an organized tour from Columbo or from one of the Hambantota resorts. Driving time is less than three hours from Columbo and about an hour from the beach resorts.

The drawback to Udawalawe is the park can be crowded and everyone wants to see the elephants. Safari jeep drivers work on tips and can be very competitive and aggressive about finding animals for their clients.

One of the best tourist attractions in Sri Lanka is also one of the country's newest and the tallest. The Colombo Lotus Tower opened in 2019 as South Asia's tallest, free-standing structure .

Although it's a popular tourist attraction, the tower was built for a much more utilitarian reason: it's the hub of the country's radio, TV, and mobile phone networks and their antennas. The lotus bulb-inspired tower, which overlooks the entire city and the Indian Ocean, is 1,168 feet (368 meters) tall and is a great place to snap some Instagram-worthy shots.

There's a shopping mall in the base of the tower. From here, you can take super-fast elevators up to both indoor and outdoor observation areas. There's also a revolving restaurant at the top , which is a very popular spot for romantic dinners.

Skip the fancy restaurant, and try your luck at the food court in the mall. You'll find a delicious array of stalls offering Sri Lankan street food. The exterior of the Lotus Tower is covered with LED lighting, and they do light shows each evening and on special holidays.

This ancient rock fortress was once the mountaintop palace of the island's king. Believed to have been constructed during the 4 th and 5 th centuries CE, the palace ruins are at the top of a 660-foot (220-meter) rock formation.

The sides of the mountain had giant frescoes painted on them, and halfway up the mountain, there's a giant gateway carved in the shape of a lion. The structure's name means lion rock in ancient Sanskrit.

The palace above and the city complex below are one of the world's most important examples of urban planning in the first millennium. The ruins are near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province of the country.

This large, sacred mountain (7,359 feet/2,243 meters), is topped with a rock formation that has significance to many religions.

At the summit, there is a large boulder with an imprint that looks like a footprint. To Buddhists, it's the footprint of Buddha; to Muslims and Christians, it's the footprint of Adam (thus the site's Western name); and to Hindus, it was created by the deity Shiva.

Whatever your belief, Adam's Peak is a beautiful natural site to visit, and it's a cool adventure to climb the mountain. The pilgrimage path is mainly steps and stairs, and it takes at least a few hours each way.

The mountain is accessed from routes beginning in the village of Nallathanniya in central Sri Lanka. The best times to climb it are between December and May. Most people start the climb at night, so they reach the summit at sunrise.

There are six trails leading to the summit, with varying journey times and varying degrees of difficulty. The paths are lighted at night, and the activity is great for families, as children can easily do it, too. There are rest stops and food vendors along the way.

Throughout Sri Lanka there are natural caves that have been enlarged and excavated to be turned into cave temples. Like other temples, they honor Buddha and other deities (and a few kings) with large statues and relics.

The Dambulla cave temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site . It's the largest cave temple complex in the country and the best preserved. Of particular interest are the beautiful, now-preserved and conserved colorful wall murals that decorate the cave walls.

Aside from the cave temples, there is a large, golden Buddha statue at the base of the mountain, giving the site its other name, the Golden Temple of Dambulla. Dambulla is about two hours outside Colombo.

This 16 th -century Dutch fortress and walled town has been turned into a large tourist attraction. Originally built by the Portuguese in the 16 th century, most of the structures date to the Dutch colonial period in the 17 th century. More than a fort, it's a small fortified village, with homes, churches, a mosque, and lots of shops all within the fortress walls.

You can visit the fort and the lighthouse, and there are several museums on the site along with big shopping areas. The Fort, on the southwest coast Sri Lanka, about two hours south of Colombo, is a popular tourist destination with a lot of boutique hotels, some located within the fort's walls.

One of the iconic images of Sri Lanka, this relic of the British colonial era is a strikingly beautiful example of the beauty of practical, industrial design. Built by local workers in consultation with British engineers, the viaduct bridge has nine arches over its 300-foot span. It rises 80 feet above the river and remains in use today, over 100 years after its construction.

You can visit the bridge two ways: by traveling to it by tuk-tuk from Ella or by taking a train that traverses it. The Nine Arches Bridge is located between the Ella and Demodara stations on the main train line. Train journeys (usually from Kandy to Ella) that cross the bridge are considered one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka and one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.

When visiting from Ella, it's possible to (carefully) walk across the bridge, and this is one of the most popular Instagram spots in the country because of the dramatic views.

The best place to see elephants in Sri Lanka isn't at a so-called sanctuary or orphanage, it's in their natural habitat in Minneriya National Park. Some of the commercial parks have been known to exploit the animals, including chaining them in the river to create better photo opportunities.

The lush park is important as it's a dry season (July through October) feeding area for the elephants who live in the surrounding forest areas, drawing more than 500 animals at one time.

The park is also home to a few species of monkeys, different types of deer, leopards, and sloth bears. It's a popular place to visit for photo safaris. Minneriya is in the north-central area of Sri Lanka, about three hours from Colombo. It's a popular day-trip tourist destination and many tour operators and hotels in Columbo offer day trips.

While Sri Lanka's national parks showcase the country's native flora and fauna, the Ridiyagama Safari Park near Hambantota has animals from all over the world. This safari park tourist attraction allows visitors to get an African safari experience, complete with lions, zebras, giraffes, cape buffaloes, and other animals indigenous to Africa.

The drive-through safari park covers over 500 acres and has three zones. There's an African Lion Zone, the Sri Lankan Elephant Zone, and a World Zone. The park is near the Hambantota resort area and is a fun family day trip if you're staying at one of the area's resorts.

Many local tour providers and the major resorts offer a park visit experience, picking you up at your hotel, taking you through the safari park in their vehicle, then returning you to your hotel. It's a great thing to do in Sri Lanka for kids and families.

This large museum, formerly called the National Museum of Colombo, tells the fascinating story of the Sri Lankan people and their culture. The Sri Lanka National Museum collection includes various kinds of things, from artifacts to artwork along with jewelry, coins, money, arms, and crafts.

The museum has multiple levels and showcases both cultural and natural exhibits. Everything is shown chronologically, starting with the island's prehistoric history.

You'll find the museum in central Colombo, near Viharamahadevi Park. It's housed in a Victorian colonial building that was purpose-built for the museum and opened in 1877.

After you've visited the Sri Lanka National Museum and learned about Sri Lanka's cultural history, head to the nearby National Museum of Natural History to trace its physical, wildlife, and natural history.

This museum shows the country's incredible indigenous natural history, with examples of animals, plants, and minerals that are endemic to the South Asian island. The island's ancient and prehistoric history is also on display, with some cool fossils and skeletons including those of dinosaurs.

It's across from Viharamahadevi Park in central Colombo.

Located in Central Colombo near Beira Lake, this 19 th -century Buddhist temple complex interestingly includes a vintage car museum . There's a cool 1930s Mercedes and a very rare Rolls-Royce Ghost from the 1920s. The temple is also a religious museum with examples of religious coins, jewelry, and sculpture.

The temple was created around a sacred tree to house a sacred relic, a lock of the Buddha's hair. Each year during the Poya or full moon ceremony in February, there's a festival and procession around the area led by the temple's resident elephant.

A visit to the striking red and white brick Red Mosque (called "Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid") will yield some insight into the local practice of Islam, as well as some awesome Instagram pics.

Inside, the mosque showcases typical religious artwork and design, but it's the outside that really makes it extra special. The exterior red and white bricks are arranged in sometimes eye-fooling designs of spirals, swirls, and alternating patterns. The impact has also made the mosque a visual landmark, easy to spot from arriving ships (it's visible from Colombo Harbor).

The minarets of the mosque are topped with onion-shaped domes, reminiscent of Red Square. The style is called "Indo-Saracenic," and it was a popular architectural style in Asia in the early 19 th century when this mosque was built.

Kandy is a city in the central part of Sri Lanka and is important, as it was the kingdom's last capital city before the colonial era. The beautiful city and its unique history can be explored at the National Museum of Kandy .

The main part of the museum is housed in what was the home of the king's harem; additional exhibits are inside the former palace. The museum is filled with artifacts that tell the story of the Kandian era, the time between the 15 th and 18 th centuries, when the area maintained its independence despite colonization of other parts of the island.

Aside from historic objects and artifacts, the museum has an incredible collection of Sri Lankan art, as it's an official repository for native artwork.

Sri Lanka may be a small island in the Indian Ocean but that’s the only thing small about it. The country, formerly known as Ceylon, boasts an ancient civilization, golden sandy beaches with their swaying coconut palms, mountains, and rubber and tea plantations.

With coconut palms swaying in the breeze, Bentota is a multi-tasking tourist town on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. One of Sri Lanka’s most popular beaches, Bentota is first an Indian Ocean beach resort where water activities, such as surfing, sailing and snorkeling, abound.

When it’s time for a change of pace, you can visit a sea turtle hatchery and conservation center, which monitors five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world. You can also take in a 17th century fortress, lush gardens and an old Buddhist temple that dates from medieval times.

Sri Lanka is famous for its tea. What better place to learn more about tea than the source itself: Nuwara Eliya. With a temperate climate and elevation of 1,900 meters (6,100 feet), Nuwara Eliya is the country’s tea production capital.

You can tour a tea plantation and see how tea is made. Founded in the 19th century, this hill country town soon became a retreat for British colonists, earning the nickname Little England.

Anuradhapura is an ancient sacred city that was established around a cutting from Buddha’s fig tree. Dating back to the third century BC, Anuradhapura was established by the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns.

This magnificent city of palaces, temples and monuments flourished for 1,300 years but was abandoned after it was invaded in the late 10th century. Much like Peru’s Machu Picchu, locals were aware of it but not many others until it was “discovered” by Europeans many centuries later. These fantastic ruins have since been excavated and are accessible for the public to enjoy.

7. Colombo [SEE MAP]

Colombo has been the commercial capital of Sri Lanka for more than 2,000 years when its large natural harbor made it popular with ancient trades from Italy to China. It’s often referred to as the country’s capital, though the legislative capital is located in a nearby city.

Ruled over by first Portuguese and then British colonists, Colombo is a popular tourist destination. One of the most popular attractions is Galle Face Green, a strip park along the Indian Ocean. Also not to be missed is Gangaramaya Temple, which is known for its mix of ethnic architectural styles.

6. Yala National Park [SEE MAP]

Animals rule the roost, the ground and the sky at Yala National Park, a wildlife sanctuary about 240 km (150 miles) from Colombo. Yala offers a plethora of things to do. Your visit begins with a safari to see animals, including elephants, water buffalo and leopards, found here in higher density than any other place in the world. Note: the park closes for September’s leopard breeding season.

The park also is home to 215 bird species, of which seven are native to the park. Top sights, besides wild animals, are Sithulpauwwa, an ancient rock temple that once housed 12,000 monks, and Magul Maha Viharaya, once the setting for a royal marriage.

If you’re looking to holiday in a tropical paradise, Mirissa just might be the answer to your dreams: swaying coconut palms, beautiful golden sand beaches, days spent rocking away in a hammock. It doesn’t get much better than this.

This crescent-shaped piece of paradise is famous for having the most stunning sunsets and sunrises in Sri Lanka. There are no luxury resorts to mar the landscape, so it’s just you, the beach, and quiet during the day. The pace picks up at night. Mirissa is the largest fishing port on the south coast and is a good place to go dolphin and whale watching.

4. Polonnaruwa [SEE MAP]

The terms “beauty” and “beast” usually go together well, except at Polonnaruwa where beauty goes better with “ruins.” The second oldest kingdom in Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa is known for the ruins of this ancient garden city.

The 12th century ruins are some of the best preserved in the country. Polonnaruwa was a place where traders of exotic goods mingled with worshippers in the many temples.

Start your tour of Polonnaruwa at the Archaeological Museum, then proceed to the massive (50 buildings) Royal Palace with its well-preserved audience hall. The stunningly decorated Sacred Quadrangle is another must-see here.

3. Kandy [SEE MAP]

Kandy, the second largest city in Sri Lanka, is the gateway to the Central Highlands and its tropical plantations that grow both tea and rubber. If you’re driving from Colombo, you’ll pass by rubber plantations on a road that is considered one of the country’s most scenic.

The last capital of the ancient kingdoms, Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most sacred Buddhist temples in the world. A major, colorful festival involves taking the tooth relic around the city. Movie buffs may be interested to know Kandy was a chief location in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

2. Galle [SEE MAP]

Galle’s most famous attraction is its 17th century fort built by Dutch colonists. Sitting on a promontory overlooking the Indian ocean, the fort is known for its architectural style. Galle is considered a prime example of a fortified city.

The fortress is not just another pretty place, however; today the fort houses courts and businesses. Galle is becoming known as an arts colony and its expat community – about a third of the city’s homes are owned by foreigners.

Other top sights include a natural harbor, Sri Lanka’s oldest lighthouse, a maritime museum, a key Shiva temple and the Jesuit built St. Mary’s Cathedral.

1. Sigiriya [SEE MAP]

Wannabe archaeologists need to put Sigiriya on their list of must-see places to visit in Sri Lanka. This ancient city is built on a steep slope, topped by a plateau almost 180 meters (600 feet) high.

This plateau is known as Lion’s Rock as it oversees the jungles below. Access to the site is through staircases and rooms emanating from the lion’s mouth. You’ll also see ponds, gardens and fountains. Pretty cool!

Locals consider the site the eighth wonder of the world. This ancient rock fortress dates back to the third century BC when it was a monastery. It was later turned into a royal residence.

Around 300BC, at the time of Alexander the Great, the ancient Greeks called the island Palaesimoundu, meaning 'beyond the sea,' and wrote of its mythical treasures. Chinese Buddhist monk Fa-Hien visited Sri Lanka around 410 AD and liked it so much that he stayed for two years. In the twelfth century, Italian explorer Marco Polo declared Sri Lanka the "best island of its size in the world." In 1896, Mark Twain, of Huckleberry Finn fame, wrote, "Dear me, it is beautiful… Oriental charm and mystery, and tropic deliciousness."

Fast-forward to 2024, and the country has seen tourism revenue increase by 122% in January 2024. The reasons why aren’t hard to deduce. Sri Lanka is a world-in-one island of palm-fringed beaches, rice paddies and lily ponds, ancient cities, lush rainforests, tea estates and generous, welcoming people. Sigiriya, or Sinhagiri, is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province. The site is defined by a pair of monumental paws that form what was once the base of a whole lion. Five thousand years ago, the structure was commissioned and built from nearly three million stones and bricks stretching to the top of a massive monolith of red rock.

However, the origins of Sigiriya's habitation are shrouded in myth and mystery. What remains today is a more recent legacy, dating back a mere 2,500 years to the reign of King Kashyapa. Like all incredible ruins, this one comes with a dramatic story. Kashyapa is said to have entombed his father alive and stolen the throne from his half-brother, who then fled to India to plot a terrifying and brutal revenge. Fearing his brother's return, Kashyapa sought refuge atop the mighty rock and built himself a fortress as ornate as it was fortified.

It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. This temple complex dates back to the first century BCE. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Lord Buddha and his life. There are total of 153 Buddha statues, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of gods and goddesses.

Dambulla, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the best-preserved cave temples in Asia. Located at the top of 370 granite stairs, the temple complex towers 524 feet over the surrounding plains. Thought to be over 2,000 years old, they still house Sri Lankan Buddhist monks. The five cave temples fan out under a vast overhanging rock and are filled with a collection of ancient murals, intricately painted ceilings and 153 hand-carved stone statues of the Buddha.

Nearby Anuradhapura, a major city located in Sri Lanka's north-central plain and the first ancient capital of the country, is a city that thrived from the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD. Giant stupas tower above the tropical jungle, mystical moonstones mark the entranceways to temples, and ruins of vast monastic complexes lay scattered over many square miles. For nearly a millennium, Anuradhapura's kings commissioned opulent palaces, intricate sculptures, vast stupas, some of the world's first hospitals, and monasteries and monastic colleges that were some of the oldest universities in the world. All this centered around one of the oldest trees in the world, the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, a 3rd-century BC cutting from the famous Bodhi tree in India, where the Buddha had sat and gained enlightenment.

Another essential temple visit on any Sri Lankan itinerary is Kandy. Once the capital of an ancient kingdom, Kandy is tucked beside a lake in the middle of Sri Lanka's central highlands and surrounded by tea plantations. Kandy is home to The Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses the relic of the Tooth of Buddha, resting in a golden casket dripping with ropes of shimmering pearls. According to legend, mourners had rescued the Tooth from the Buddha's cremation pyre nearly 2,500 years ago. Since ancient times, this Tooth has played an important role in Sri Lanka's politics. Wars have been fought over it. It's believed that whoever possesses the Tooth is destined to rule Sri Lanka.

The Tooth attracts more than a million pilgrims every year. Throngs of people squeeze into the temple's narrow corridors, the air heavy with the scent of lotus blossom, jasmine and frangipani. Lanterns and devotional candles flicker, illuminating ornate panels embellished with frescoes of golden gods and goddesses. Barefoot devotees file slowly along a wooden gallery, leaving floral offerings on long tables in front of the shrine while waiting patiently for the interior temple doors to open and give them a glimpse of the sacred relic.

Head for the Ceylon Tea Hills

The most atmospheric journey from Kandy to tea country is by train. A serpent of blue metal, the train passes through vibrant tea plantations, with curtains of eucalyptus and pine trees on one side and mountains and towering ravines on the other. Travelers and locals alike hang out the open doors, catching the breeze and posing for photos while vendors offer samosas and other snacks. Climb down at Hatton station and set off into the world of tea.

Ceylon Tea Trails is a collection of five restored heritage tea planters' bungalows dotted among the plantations of the Dilmah tea estates. With a nostalgic charm and a distinctly British feel, the estate harks back to Sri Lanka's past, with butlers, afternoon teas, manicured gardens and croquet offered on the lawn. While there, tour the tea factory for some insights into the process of production, from picking to packing and drinking.

From the tea country, head to Galle, a beautiful city with a vibrant history to match. Situated on the coast, the bright white Galle Fort, which dates back to 1663, is a place of cobblestoned streets and Dutch colonial buildings. Galle's origins are ancient. As a seaport, it dates back millennia; cinnamon has been shipped from here for a thousand years, and it was here that King Solomon came for ivory, peacocks, and other treasures. After Portuguese and then Dutch colonization, Galle was a hotspot on the spice route and was Sri Lanka's main port for 200 years.

The best way to take it in is to wander the streets of the old town. Sites include the magnificent gabled Dutch Reformed Church, the ochre-colored Old Dutch Warehouses, the Galle Dutch Hospital, and Law Court Square with its ages-old banyan trees. Climb the ramparts at Aurora Bastion, wander past the slender lighthouse and end up at Moon Bastion, which overlooks the new town and the cricket ground. Visit shops and quirky cafés, and in the evenings, drink Sri Lankan arrak, made from the fermented sap of coconut flowers.

An hour's drive from Galle, Balapitiya is a peaceful oasis near a traditional coastal fishing village featuring golden soft beaches and the endless Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon. Surrounded by paddy fields, coconut plantations, and cinnamon estates, Balapitiya offers the chance to unwind from the noise and chaos of Sri Lanka's roads and cities.

Sri Lanka has been recognised as one of the ‘3 Must — Visit Travel Destinations for Summer 2024’ by a specialist contributor to the prestigious Forbes magazine.  Alongside Paros in Greece and Mauritius, Sri Lanka was highlighted for offering unique and compelling travel experiences. “Sri Lanka, another island country floating in the Indian Ocean, is a land of verdant highlands and stunning beaches. Its appeal is a blend of surf and wellness cultures, similar to Bali before its boom in popularity and resulting over-tourism,” said an article contributed by travel and business professional Kathleen Peddicord in the Forbes magazine.  It added that the island nation is praised for its blend of surf and wellness cultures, with numerous centres for yoga, reiki and breath-work emerging in recent years; with notable wellness retreats such as Kalukanda House and Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort which offer luxury accommodations combined with holistic health practices.

Start in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s history-stuffed capital city. Explore temples and markets and fine dining on crab curry, then drift south to the sands of Aluthgama and Bentota , taking time to detour inland to the charming Brief Garden . If you have the budget, this stretch of coast has some of Sri Lanka’s best Ayurvedic spa resorts. Pause for a day or two of water fun in Hikkaduwa , and drop by Ambalangoda to delve into the island’s tradition of  kolam  (masked dances).

It’s back to history in Unesco-listed Galle , with colonial-era streets wrapped around a historic lighthouse and a fortress built by Dutch colonizers. Eat and sleep well in the old center, then link through beachy Unawatuna and surfy Midigama and Weligama, squeezing in a detour to the Handunugoda Tea Estate before wrapping up in the authentically Sri Lankan town of Matara .  

Planning tip: If you’ve never surfed in Sri Lanka before , the resort of Hikkaduwa offers an easy introduction to bathtub-warm waters. It’s also a hub for snorkeling and diving, with an inshore reef off the main beach that’s great for families. 

2. Colombo to Badulla across the Hill Country

Best road trip for tea lovers Colombo–Ella; 240km (145 miles)

It’s not all about beaches in Sri Lanka. The trip inland from Colombo to the Hill Country is one of Sri Lanka’s most evocative rail journeys, and it’s just as impressive by road. Starting from the capital and taking regular stops to look out over the scenery, trace the A1 highway inland to higher ground and the sacred city of Kandy , home to Sri Lanka’s most revered temple.

Coming with a car and driver makes it easy to visit nearby temples and gardens and the Ceylon Tea Museum  before heading to serious tea country. Take the highland road to Nuwara Eliya through jade-green tea plantations, stopping at estates such as Glenloch to learn about the tea-making process. Check into a colonial-era hotel (we rate the Hill Club ) and take high tea at the Grand . 

Roll on via the striking Horton Plains to Haputale , where tea-mogul Sir Thomas Lipton founded his empire. Visit Lipton’s factory at Dambatenne  before looping past more hillside viewpoints to Ella  to book into a local guesthouse and enjoy proper Sri Lankan home-cooking. We leave it up to you whether you snap an Instagram pic of the Nine Arches bridge just outside town.

Planning tip: The Horton Plains are like nowhere else in Sri Lanka – an eerily silent area of high country that stops abruptly at the sheer drop-off of World’s End . Pay the national park fees near Farr Inn and you’re free to explore on foot on designated trails. 

3. A circle of ancient cities 

Best trip for history  Anuradhapura–Kandy, 180km (112 miles) 

The green plains of central Sri Lanka couldn’t be further from the sun-and-sand image of the coast. Here you’ll find the ruins of Sri Lanka’s ancient Buddhist kingdoms spilling out from forests that teem with bee-eaters and hornbills.

Start in Anuradhapura , where two-millennia-old brick stupas the size of aircraft hangers are still sites of daily worship. Pay your respects at Sri Maha Bodhi , a tree propagated from the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, and head on to the fascinating monastic complex at Ritigala . 

Break from the ruins at elephant-thronged Minneriya National Park , then dive back in again at Polonnaruwa , home to some of Sri Lanka’s most impressive temples, statues and ruins. Slingshot west via Sigiriya , whose rocky outcrop is crowned by the ruined citadel palace of King Kasyapa, reached via a vertiginous stairway.

Roll south to Dambulla , where the dusty brickwork is replaced by cave temples painted in vivid primary colors. Bring the journey up to date with one last stop at Kandy, where the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is still the beating heart of modern Sri Lankan Buddhism. 

Planning tip: Try to time your visit to Anuradhapura to coincide with a poya day – festivals that mark each passing full moon. Pilgrims flock to the stupas dressed in immaculate white clothes and the brick plinths are wrapped in bolts of colored cloth by devotees. 

4. The best of Sri Lanka’s national parks

Best for wildlife spotters Mirissa–Arugam Bay; 440km (273 miles)

This cross-country jaunt takes in some of Sri Lanka’s most epic wildlife encounters, visiting national parks both famous and quiet and cruising offshore to meet Sri Lanka’s largest wild animal, the blue whale. Indeed, that’s the first activity before you drive on from the south-coast resort of Mirissa . Feathered friends of all shapes and sizes are the main draws inland at Sinharaja Forest Reserve , and they’re best encountered on foot with a local guide.  

Roll east to meet elephants at Uda Walawe National Park (in more peaceful surroundings than at crowded Yala National Park), then return to the coast for bird encounters amid dunes and lagoons at Bundala National Park . You’ll need to loop inland to reach Kumana National Park – a much easier journey with a car and driver than by public transport – where you stand a good chance of a liaison with a leopard. Finish up on the beach at Arugam Bay for some surfing downtime. 

Planning tip: Different seasons bring different wildlife experiences. Traveling in November brings decent chances of spotting whales, elephants and leopards, but the best time for elephant spotting is from July to October when pachyderms gather in great herds.

5. Exploring Sri Lanka’s east coast

Best road trip for escaping the crowds Arugam Bay–Trincomalee; 260km (162 miles)

Things are quieter on Sri Lanka’s east coast, and it’s dry during the island’s May-to-August low season, making this a great trip for travelers on a budget. En route, you can stop at laid-back surf hubs and historic towns that feel more authentically Sri Lankan than the resorts in the south and west. Start with a wave at Arugam Bay, one of the island’s most relaxing surfing spots. Stop for a day to explore less-visited temples and birding spots on the lagoons around Pottuvil. 

Moving north up the coast, you’ll cross the Gal Oya river (follow it inland for wildlife encounters in under-explored Gal Oya National Park) en route to Batticaloa , where you can explore colonial relics, diverse religious sites and fine beaches. Let the coast call you further north toward  Trincomalee , where Dutch and British history nudges up against Tamil culture. Use Trinco as a base for day excursions to the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli and snorkeling with reef sharks and turtles at Pigeon Island National Park. 

6. A taste of the North 

Best road trip for Tamil culture Colombo–Jaffna; 600km (373 miles)

Travelers have long overlooked Sri Lanka’s once-troubled north, but with peace prevailing in the island’s Tamil heartland the time is ripe for exploring. Starting from Colombo, drift north through laid-back Negombo  and get your first taste of Tamil architecture at the Madampe Murugan temple. Stop overnight on the peaceful Kalpitiya Peninsula, Sri Lanka’s kite-surfing capital. 

Before you enter the Tamil north proper, swing by Wilpattu National Park – one of the island’s more peaceful reserves – then duck onto Mannar Island to admire the baobab trees and get as close to India as you can without leaving Sri Lanka. From here on north, Hindu Tamil culture dominates; look out for vividly painted kovils (Hindu temples) as you follow the A32 north across the lagoon to Jaffna . 

In Sri Lanka’s northern capital, richly spiced Tamil food is the order of the day. Feast on crab curry and tour the Dutch-era fort and the pilgrim-thronged courtyards of the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil . This could be the end of the journey, but you could also spend a day or more exploring the quiet beaches and outpost villages of the once war-torn Jaffna Peninsula to see how far Sri Lanka has come since the end of the civil war in 2009.

Tips for driving in Sri Lanka 

It’s possible to self-drive a car in Sri Lanka, but most people prefer to leave the driving to someone with experience of local conditions. Hiring a car with a driver is easy, and you’ll get to visit some local food stops you’d probably miss going it alone. Operators such as Ancient Lanka can sort you out with a car and a friendly, experienced driver from US$65 per day. You’ll also be better placed to navigate any fuel shortages on the island, as tour drivers have priority access to fuel.

While motorcycle and scooter rental is not as widespread as in Southeast Asia, it’s easy and inexpensive to arrange along the coast. The roads are generally well maintained, though potholes are common on back lanes and in the hills. Watch out for wandering dogs, chickens and wildlife (including elephants – if you see a jumbo on the road, back away). Beware of speeding trucks and buses, which won’t slow down for something as lowly as a motorcycle. Try to avoid being on the roads after dark, when hazards are harder to spot.

Ooty tourist season ends: Major losses for vendors and tourist spots

With the end of the tourist season in Ooty, the tourist spots have become deserted. The influx of tourists to Ooty has also ceased. There are changes in the weather patterns of Ooty as well. With increasing instances of severe cold, rain, and wind, life in the town has become miserable. Additionally, waterlogging and dirt have marred the Ooty experience quite a bit. All the gardens are deserted. All these contributed to this year's season turning into a major failure for vendors as well. The court order requiring e-passes for tourists coming to Ooty and Kodaikanal was a major setback. E-passes have been made mandatory until June 30. Although everyone who applies receives one, the tightening of controls at the check posts has discouraged tourists from securing the e-pass. The failure of the tourism season led to significant losses in the business sector. Those who leased tourism centres in Ooty by spending large sums suffered massive losses. Local residents said that all sectors dependent on tourism had suffered losses. Resort for Rs 1,500 Resorts that used to charge Rs 5,000 a day for a room were forced to lower the tariffs to as low as Rs 1,500 as there are fewer tourists.

Global Measles

• Many international destinations are reporting increased numbers of cases of measles.
• Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure or have not had measles in the past and travel internationally.
• The majority of measles cases imported into the United States occur in unvaccinated U.S. residents who become infected during international travel.
• All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .
• Travelers should seek medical care if they develop a rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, or red, watery eyes. Measles is highly contagious. Travelers with suspected measles should notify the healthcare facility before visiting so staff can implement precautions to prevent spread within the facility.

Measles is  a highly contagious virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person. It can spread to others through coughing and sneezing .

The measles virus can live for up to two hours in an airspace or on a surface after an infected person leaves an area. If other people breathe the contaminated air or touch the infected surface, then touch their eyes, noses, or mouths, they can become infected. People can spread measles up to four days before and four days after a rash.

Signs and symptoms of measles include maculopapular rash, high fever, and a cough, runny nose, or red, watery eyes.

Measles can be severe in all age groups and can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia (infection of the lungs) and death. Several groups are more likely to suffer from measles complications, including children younger than five years of age, adults older than 20 years of age, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems, such as from leukemia or HIV infection. Common complications are ear infections and diarrhea. Serious complications include pneumonia and encephalitis (infection of the brain).

What is the current situation?

Measles is an ongoing risk around the world. Health officials in the countries listed below have reported large measles outbreaks.

• Philippines
• Republic of the Congo
• Saudi Arabia
• South Sudan
• United Arab Emirates

Measles spreads rapidly and may become a risk to travelers in places not included on the list above. CDC recommends all travelers are fully vaccinated against measles when traveling to any international destination.

What can travelers do to protect themselves and others from measles?

Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated two weeks prior to departure and travel internationally.

Vaccination with a measles-containing vaccine is the best way to make sure that you are protected. Infants 6 through 11 months of age should receive one dose of MMR vaccine. Infants who had one dose of MMR vaccine before their first birthday should follow the recommended schedule and get another dose at 12–15 months and a final dose at 4–6 years. Children 12 months of age and older, teenagers, and adults who do not have presumptive evidence of immunity against measles should get two doses of MMR vaccine separated by at least 28 days. If the child received a first dose with measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV), they should wait 3 months before their second dose. 

If you are not sure if you or your travel companions are fully protected against measles, schedule an appointment to see your clinician at least 6 weeks before traveling so that you have enough time to get vaccinated.

Some people should not get a measles-containing vaccine or should wait. If you don’t think you can safely receive a measles-containing vaccine, talk to your clinician and consider making alternative travel plans.

What can clinicians do?

A self-report of measles vaccination or self-reported history of measles infection is not adequate evidence of protection. Clinicians should vaccinate anyone 6 months or older traveling overseas who does not have written documentation of vaccination or other evidence of measles immunity . Infants aged 6–11 months should be vaccinated with one dose before travel*. For international travelers 12 months or older, 2 doses at least 28 days apart are recommended.

*Infants who get one dose of MMR vaccine before their first birthday should be revaccinated according to the routine ACIP schedule (one dose at 12 through 15 months of age and a final dose at 4–6 years).
