'Star Trek' super-fan constructs a working tricorder inspired by the 'Voyager' TV series

Not many fans have the engineering abilities to boldly go where Mangy Dog has gone.

Very few Star Trek fans have the engineering capabilities to boldly go where MangyDog has gone. The U.K.-based content creator with a background in 3D modeling and graphic design made headlines with a beautifully-detailed and fully-working tricorder  inspired by the one depicted in  Star Trek: Voyager , which ran for a total of seven seasons on UPN between 1995 and 2001.

Exclusively speaking with SYFY WIRE over email, Mangy explains that the unique undertaking was born out of three things: his love of Star Trek , a private commission from a friend, and a tragic personal loss.

"This project started several years ago with the creation of the prototype," he recalls. "After losing my mother suddenly to a short cancer illness at the beginning of 2016, I needed something to focus on and put my efforts into, to help me through the grief. I’ve always been interested in electronics and programming, but before [this] I never really had the time to learn it. So I began learning what I could. Education projects like Arduino had really matured by this time, and hobby hardware design had really taken off. There were tons of resources for me to learn from, and I begun making my own projects."

A staple of the Trek universe, tricorders are nifty pocket devices capable of storing data, recording personal logs, and even diagnosing medical ailments (think of the technology as a much more sophisticated Palm Pilot...remember those?). In addition to compiling all of the necessary hardware, which included off-the-shelf materials and custom-printed circuit boards from China, Mangy also had to contend with the challenge of programming the darned thing to work the way it does.

"In the end I wrote about fourteen thousand lines of code for the project," he explains. "Some uses some interesting maths I’ve not heard of before and even some using maths I really should have remembered from school! ... While there was tons of research I did myself. I certainly would have struggled if it wasn’t for the help I received for various members of the embedded electronics community, they really have been great helping me find solutions to problems I was having."

Mangy continues: "I more than once wanted to walk away from the project. But not only did my love of Trek and commitment to getting my projects done keep me going, I [also] promised my friend I would deliver and that was a key driving force to make sure this got done and done right. I wanted him to be happy with the build I made for him. And on a selfish note, I wanted to use this build as part of a portfolio to find work in the embedded development industry. So it HAD to be good!"

As for what projects the future might hold, Mangy is interested in pursuing a "Warp Core lamp," even though it's been done before . "I also have a really big project coming up where I'm going to build a replica First Contact Borg Cube," he reveals. "I plan to build it at a slightly smaller scale than the studio model ... I’m not sure when I'll be starting that, but I hope to get going with it some point this year. It's going to be a fun challenge, but this time, one that’s more artistic!"

Mangy chronicled the entire process in three videos now available on YouTube ( Part I , Part II , Part III ).

All seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager are now streaming on Paramount+. Created by Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor after the death of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, the series introduced a number of fan favorite characters into the franchise canon, including Kate Mulgrew's Captain Kathryn Janeway, who recently returned in Star Trek: Prodigy on Paramount+.

This Fan-Made Star Trek: Voyager Tricorder Is the Real Deal

Andrew Liszewski Avatar

Producing a sci-fi TV series based on one of the most beloved franchises of all time isn’t cheap. You not only have to build standing sets recreating the interior of a giant starship, there’s also alien worlds to construct, loads of special effects, and mountains of futuristic props for the cast to interact with. According to Hackaday , For Star Trek: Voyager , the second follow-up to the wildly successful Star Trek: The Next Generation, there were plans to introduce an updated design for the ubiquitous tricorder — a futuristic PDA that can do almost anything a script requires of it — but concept sketches were replaced with hand-me-down props from TNG to keep costs down.

At least one Star Trek: Voyager fan felt that was a great injustice, but instead of voicing their concerns during a Q&A session at a Star Trek convention, they set out to build the Voyager Tricorder, as they call it, in real life. The first version that YouTuber Mangy_Dog (a UI designer who’s also skilled at electronics) designed took over a year to build and was impressively capable and looked straight out of the 24th century. But when a friend commissioned a replica of the tricorder for themselves, Mangy_Dog took the opportunity to thoroughly update the prop inside and out, and while it took several years to complete, the results look even better than anything Hollywood has ever delivered.

Mangy_Dog has delved into the design and engineering process behind the Voyager Tricord V2 build in three videos. The first video goes into some of the challenges of the hardware itself, including custom PCBs and problems with sourcing high-quality displays, while the second video delves into the custom user interface and animations created for the prop, which are all generated and rendered on the fly, instead of just being pre-rendered videos played back on queue. The third video goes much deeper into the internal hardware including the custom PCB created for the project and the extensive code that powers it.

Star Trek: Voyager fans will recognize these Tricorders made by one fan.

One incredibly talented Star Trek fan has made his very own versions of the Tricorders. The Tricorders are a staple of Star Trek, and this fan, who goes by Mangy Dog, decided to create his own versions based on the Star Trek: Voyager series.

On his YouTube channel, Mangy has near step-by-step videos showing how he’s done this. The process is intense and requires an understanding of coding. For those fans who are familiar with that, it may be possible to make some yourself, but it won’t be easy, nor fast.

Unlike other props, these are fully functional. No, you can’t actually use them to test for toxins in the air or diagnose someone on the street for a potential broken bone, but they have all the lights, sounds, and effects of the television prop versions.

They even have LCD screens that have limited-interactive features.

SyFy.com caught up with Mangy Dog and interviewed him on the subject of these Tricorders and why he had to finish it.

"In the end I wrote about fourteen thousand lines of code for the project. Some uses some interesting maths I’ve not heard of before and even some using maths I really should have remembered from school! … While there was tons of research I did myself. I certainly would have struggled if it wasn’t for the help I received for various members of the embedded electronics community, they really have been great helping me find solutions to problems I was having.…I more than once wanted to walk away from the project. So it HAD to be good!I also have a really big project coming up where I’m going to build a replica First Contact Borg Cube. I plan to build it at a slightly smaller scale than the studio model … I’m not sure when I’ll be starting that, but I hope to get going with it some point this year. It’s going to be a fun challenge, but this time, one that’s more artistic!”"

The updated Tricorder of Star Trek: Voyager is even better

The first was created in 2019, or at least finished (mostly) in 2019. His videos are more information on how to do this, and what he’s done to upgrade the versions; it isn’t so much a documentary or journal on when he’s done what and why.

That said, most of the videos feature some sort of new gadget that he’s tinkering with.

The newer version of the Tricorder, last updated at the end of this past year (2021), features mostly information about the code, and shell construction but Part 2 has the cleanest look yet at the device and all the bits and bobs that it possesses. You can watch all three of the videos for free on his YouTube account by clicking here, Part 1 , Part 2 , Part 3 .

It isn’t uncommon for fans to do this type of crafting in the Star Trek community. One fan recreated computers from the same Trek era, while others have created sets in their actual basement.

Building the Tricorder: The race to create a real-life Star Trek medical scanner

bylinepic.jpg

Its vision of romantic encounters with aliens and plagues of tribbles may not have come to pass just yet, but Star Trek has proved surprisingly accurate in predicting the future in other ways.

  • I replaced my boring workouts with Meta Quest's Supernatural app, and can't imagine going back
  • This Finnish startup's new VR headset rivals Apple's Vision Pro - and business users will love it
  • Meta's $500 Quest 3 is the mainstream VR headset I've been waiting for, and it delivers
  • I tried Apple Vision Pro and it's far ahead of where I expected
  • The best VR headsets right now (and they're not just from Meta)

When it comes to technology, the show's gadgets have already become reality in several cases: its communicator predicted the clamshell mobile phone, the food replicator was made real with 3D food printing , and Captain Kirk was using voice input long before Alexa became a household name.

But of all Star Trek's technological imaginings, it's the Tricorder that continues to capture the popular and scientfic imagination: a handheld medical device that could be used to analyse a patient, helping doctors diagnose and treat the crew on the bridge and beyond.

No blood tests, no X-rays, no genetic sequencing: Star Trek's doctors could just point their tricorders at the patient and seconds later work out if they'd succumbed to a cold or the Quazulu VIII virus.

The Tricorder continues to fascinate because it magically solves some of the problems about medicine we still have today: it takes too long, it's expensive, it's uncertain, and the times you need it most -- when you're far from home -- is often when it's unavailable.

People have been trying to make replicate elements of the Tricorder since the 1990s. But it's only in the last few years that the dream of creating a genuine Tricorder-type device has seemed within reach.

The first signs that a medical Tricorder could be more than a sci-fi fantasy coincided with the emergence of the first serious smartphones and tablets. Back in 2007, MIT researchers used a Nokia 770 as the basis for a Tricorder , displaying information from sensor networks, while a few years later, a rash of medical peripherals released for the iPhone offered the hope that Apple's mobile could be turned into a real-life Tricorder .

Such early discussions focused on customising existing mobile hardware to a medical diagnostic device; the first standalone device would be a few years further on.

One of the first companies to make a serious attempt at creating a Tricorder was Scanadu, which released a device called the Scout in 2015 .The Scout could measure a handful of vital signs -- blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and temperature -- by being held up to a patient's forehead. It's not quite the Tricorder's no-touch technique, and had no diagnostic capabilities, but it was arguably further towards such a device than any hardware before it. After raising $1.7m on Indiegogo, and several million dollars more from investors , the Scout eventually went on sale. However, the company had released it under the banner of a " research device for investigational use ". When it subsequently failed to win FDA approval -- for unspecified reasons -- the research effectively came to an end, and devices were bricked, leaving buyers furious .

AI and robots, IoT, virtual and augmented reality, and wearables—all are innovative technologies that could boost healthcare and productivity across the NHS. This ebook looks at how these technologies are being implemented and their current and future impact on health services.

Despite the Scout's difficulties, there was no shortage of companies that were looking to succeed were Scanadu had failed.

As befits a potentially game-changing and technologically-complex device, the Tricorder concept had caught Google's eye. Back in 2014, the head of life sciences at what was then Google X, the company's moonshot division, announced a cancer-detection system that would lay the foundations for the creation of a Tricorder. The system that Dr Andrew Conrad announced aimed to use magnetic nanoparticles that would attach themselves to cancer particles; a separate wrist-worn device would measure the particles to detect cancer. The system would over time form part of a real-life Tricorder, Conrad said.

"Instead [of] going to the doctor who says, 'Let me draw blood and in three days I'll call you if there's anything wrong,' the doctor can look and say, 'Oh, I just checked all your blood over this last year, and it looks like your kidneys are good, your liver is good, I don't see any indication of oncologic cells, pretty good, thanks.' ... We want to have a Tricorder where Dr. McCoy will wave this thing and say, 'Oh, you're suffering from Valerian death fever.' And he'd then give some shot in a person's neck and they'd immediately get better. We won't do the shots -- our partners will do the shots. But we're hoping to build the Tricorder," he told Medium at the time.

Since then, Google and its X division have been reorganised: Google's life sciences arm has become Verily, now overseen -- along with Google and other Google spinouts, including Calico -- by a new parent company Alphabet . Conrad remains head of Verily, but his dream of a Star Trek-grade medical device has not come to pass: Verily has yet to showcase any progress on building either the cancer-detection system or the Tricorder itself.

A spokesperson for Verily says its nanoparticles research is still active, but added it had experienced difficulties in the past: "Our nanoparticle research is focused on developing nanoparticles that demonstrate consistent properties. We found that nanoparticles we purchased from third-party manufacturers have been unreliable in research due to inconsistencies."

The $10m prize

Arguably one of the biggest stimulants for building a Tricorder came when chipmaker Qualcomm sponsored the Tricorder XPRIZE , a competition intended to help foster the creation of innovative medical hardware.

Rather than asking for a machine that can read vitals to help diagnose any number of illnesses, the XPRIZE asked for hardware that could diagnose a set list of 13 medical condition, including anaemia and diabetes, as well as monitor a handful of vital signs.

The prize, launched in 2011, was won last year by Basil Leaf Technologies with a device called DxtER , a small unit with a range of specific medical peripherals, including a sensor for heart and lung sounds, an ECG monitor for measuring heart rate and rhythm, and a device for analysing blood glucose and white cell count, a sign of infection and inflammation when raised.

By winning the prize, the inventors -- a group of siblings and others led by Philadelphia-based emergency room physician Basil Harris -- received a $2.6m grant to help take the DxtER from concept to commercialisation.

However, the first publicly available device based on this technology is likely to have a far smaller scope than Bones' Tricorder. Basil Leaf Technologies is working on creating a monitoring device for a single disease state, congestive cardiac failure (CCF), that a patient could keep with them at home to help monitor the progress of their condition. The aim is for a person with CCF, a chronic condition, to interact with the device a couple of times a day, and that information to be sent back to a medical professional to review. With such longitudinal monitoring, a doctor can monitor the patient's progress regularly without having to ask them to take time out of their days to come in for regular check-ups.

"A diagnostic device that can diagnose one of 13 medical conditions is not really that viable -- a first year medical resident can diagnose 75 to 100 medical conditions. We just designed something to win a prize, but it's not something that's useful out in the marketplace yet. And if you think about how the FDA in the United States approves medical devices, if we sought an approval for a medical device that did a large collection of medical conditions, it would take aeons to be approved. From a strategic point of view, we changed our strategy and said let's focus on one disease state," Phil Charron, head of user experience at Basil Leaf Technologies, tells ZDNet.

SEE MORE ON OUR NHS REPORT: Why the NHS is killing paper records to save lives

Nonetheless, Basil Leaf Technologies is still working towards creating a Tricorder in the way that most people think of it: a single device that can diagnose a range of conditions. For a real-life Tricorder to serve as a universal diagnostic tool in the way that Star Trek envisioned, it would need to be able to analyse far more biomarkers than the DxtER currently does.

Handily, scientists are also working on expanding the capabilities of Tricorder-like devices. Earlier this year, researchers from the University of Glasgow created a handheld sensor device based on a CMOS chip that can analyse a number of metabolites in blood or urine, analysing them to diagnose conditions including heart attacks.

Elsewhere, companies are working on creating Tricorder type hardware with a focus on infectious disease: the Q-POC, made by QuantumDx, is expected to launch next year, and brings handheld diagnostics for bacterial and viral infections. The idea of the Q-POC is putting short-read genetic sequencing into a device the size of a smartphone: with a sample of bodily fluid, the reader could pick up not only the nature of an infection, like TB, but also its resistance to particular drugs. The technology already exists and is in common use, but shrinking it down to a device that can fit in a pocket is QuantumDx's real challenge.

The fact that the company has had to put back the Q-POC's launch date from 2016 to 2019 shows that miniaturisation is no small task. In fact, it's one of the key challenges that exists for building a Tricorder: the technology that doctors use to diagnose illnesses already exists, but it often exists in large, discrete machines, often spread around different parts of a hospital. Tricorders have to bring all of those capabilities into a single device that can be carried by one person.

"Most of the technologies that exist out there we can turn into something we can put into the patient's hands, I think that [the challenge] is more about shrinking the technologies that exist. A lot of the things that a physician can do in a regular exam room we put in a Tricorder. Labs and radiology -- that's the difficult thing to shrink down into a Tricorder," Basil Leaf Technologies' Charron says.

As well as difficulties with hardware, creating the right software for Tricorders is likely a number of years away. Creating algorithms that can diagnose certain conditions from a tight set of physical biomarkers is one thing, but there's an old adage in medicine that 'if you listen hard enough, the patient will tell you the diagnosis'. To be a universal diagnostic device, Tricorders will not only have to interpret test results, they'll also need software that knows the right questions to ask and unpick the answers they get back: a patient saying they have a tight chest pain and a sharp chest pain might sound similar, but could be the difference between a full blown heart attack or pericarditis -- a painful, but relatively benign, infection of the heart's covering.

"Our expectations about the medical tricorder stem from Star Trek and it's never a good decision to base expectations on science fiction, even though many technologies have become real from science fiction in the 21st century," says Dr Bertalan Meskó, director of The Medical Futurist Institute . And it doesn't mean we won't need doctors, Meskó says.

"There is a reason why we train medical professionals for decades and artificial intelligence-based algorithms, tricorders and many other advanced technologies are designed to upgrade their capabilities so they can use their unique vision, expertise and experience while focusing on the patients. The tricorder should make this possible instead of replacing what physicians do today."

Though the challenges to a medical Tricorder remain substantial, technology companies show no signs of waning enthusiasm for the device. That's because the potential applications for such hardware are huge. Many of the companies working on the tech today envision their machines being used by healthcare staff that aren't doctors to go do some of the run-of-the-mill diagnostic legwork, calling in doctors only for the trickiest of cases.

And, aside from managing consultants' workloads better, Tricorders could potentially make a much more significant contribution to medicine. Imagine an area -- be it in rural Europe or rural Africa -- where population density is lower, and the provision of medical care is even more sparse. Instead of having to drive for hours or even days to find a doctor the next time you take sick, a Tricorder in the home or local clinic could help you to decide whether you need to get to the nearest A&E or take a couple of aspirin and sleep off the fever.

"A working tricorder could bring about a new era in medicine," says Meskó.

Instead of expensive machines and long waiting times, information would be available immediately. Physicians could scan a patient, or patients could scan themselves and receive a list of diagnostic options and suggestions. "Imagine the influence it could have on underdeveloped regions. It should not substitute for medical supervision, but when there is none it comes in handy. Also, it would make the biggest promise of digital health real: making patients the point-of-care. Technologically, it's absolutely viable," says Meskó.

Perhaps the most interesting use of the Tricorder takes us right back to the device's sci-fi conception. Should humans ever attempt more long-distance space travel, a Tricorder would be a must: a manned mission to Mars could see astronauts travel for weeks or months without access to the full repertoire of medical support.

A sufficiently advanced Tricorder could help astronauts keep in good health during the journey. Without it, it's hard to imagine how the next generation of astronauts will be able to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Two Teams Join Forces to Make the Tricorder a Reality

star trek voyager tricorder

Even on Star Trek , there are truths you can't escape: Tribbles and Klingons don't mix. The polarity on nearly anything can be reversed. Never turn your back on a Breen. And a Tricorder is a doctor’s best friend. After all, a doctor is only as good as the data with which he or she has to work.

Maybe a Genie could help? Genie is the brainchild of Dr. Roger Mason, who's joined forces with the Algonquin College team headed up by Professor John Omura to compete in the $10M Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE competition. Together, they're melding scanning technology, learning software, and user experience design to create a medical Tricorder device that comes with a built-in diagnostic assistant.

star trek voyager tricorder

MDs, don't start panicking yet: the Genie doesn't replace the McCoys and Crushers of the world. In fact, it's designed to be the doc’s BFF: something that augments their abilities by narrowing down possibility spaces, helping to make diagnoses and recommend tests and treatments. "We're elevating the average clinician to a master diagnostician," Dr. Mason explains. With the Genie, a junior medical practitioner can optimize his or her process, simplifying pre-screening and making it easy to take a patient's medical history — even flagging things a human might miss. In emerging nations with a scarcity of doctors, the Genie would be even more valuable, enabling community health workers to diagnose conditions and initiate treatments ( Star Trek: Voyager ’s EMH would be proud!).

This Tricorder concept was Dr. Mason's idea, but after entering the competition, he and his engineering team lead, Cauri Jaye, soon identified a hole that needed filling. "It became clear to Cauri and I that we'd need to work with someone else to incorporate a hardware device that tested vitals and led to diagnoses." They began looking for a team that brought medical sensing and diagnostics to the table, and soon got in touch with the team from Algonquin College, one of the youngest teams competing in the competition. It was a perfect fit, with the Algonquin College team proving to be the peanut butter to Team Genie’s chocolate. On the Genie side: software concepts and know-how, serious medical expertise, and vital project management. On the Algonquin side: strong technical game, an institutional focus on research, and peerless user experience design.

star trek voyager tricorder

According to Algonquin's Professor John Omura, "It fits the natural model of applied research projects: seeking external partners to collaborate with, we form an R&D team working in collaboration with a client, in this case the Genie." Omura's a strong believer in combining professional experience with student innovation, as he's seen it make for very efficient collaboration. Plus, the XPRIZE competition itself is wildly exciting. "We do it for the students; it's a phenomenal opportunity to participate in a prestigious and exciting global competition, making a groundbreaking advance in healthcare."

Distilled down to its core, their mission is all about optimizing health through democratization — getting people to take control of their own health. "There's a tremendous need in this country, and indeed the world, for people to have a device that will assist them in reaching an accurate diagnosis," Dr. Mason says. This led to the question they asked at the outset, which Jaye sums up as, "How can we take the best possible experience that people have with good doctors and turn that into something they can do on themselves?"

But that's just the first part. As more patients and doctors everywhere use more units, the Genie system gathers data, collating, cross-referencing and learning. Learning things like, for instance, which tests are best for assessing certain conditions, and which ones don't provide accurate or cost-efficient information; did you know unnecessary tests and procedures account for a staggering $700 billion a year by some estimates? This technology will be poised to become a powerful agent in preventing costly testing, instead providing a kind of best-practice medicine that will not only recommend the most accurate test, but the most effective treatment for a given diagnosis. Dr. Mason envisions a world that makes the most of a doctor's time, rewarding the quality of care given, not just quantity. The Genie will be able "to broaden the ability of clinicians and lay people to make diagnoses and understand their health."

Of course, this may change the future as we know it, given the fact that in the 24th century, medical Tricorders weren’t exactly standard issue for the crew. Just think: the emergence of Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome on the Enterprise-D could've been avoided entirely if that hypochondriac lieutenant had been able to diagnose the fact that he was totally off his amateur medical rocker!

You definitely got great kits.. so you're set there... looks like a good start. How are going to protect the boards during painting? Do think you'll set this up to turn on when you flip it open?

I have and built this same setup. One of my favorite props from any movie or show. I did as much prep as possible beforehand but did paint after installation of boards. Have fun!

Cool good to know, i would have thought the spray paint may harm the boards. But looks like it works well .... carry on sir!

I had a long delay with my electronics, but Gerry always seems to come through. I also installed my electronics before spraying. I just masked the holes and inside off beforehand.

I got TNG dustbuster phaser electronics from Gerry.... great kit, installs perfectly (got the phaser kit from Stapleton) i heard Gerry has stopped taking orders... is he back at it?

More work today! Finally got my extra wire in, so I was able to work on the hinges. I also ground out the hole for the magnet in the door. This magnet triggers a read switch in the bottom of the main body that will do the closing ratchet sound when you close the tricorder. Then I prepped the hinges, scratching the surface up on the door side for as much purchase on the solder, and then a hole on the body side to hook the wire though. It took me a few tries as it's been a while since I soldered, and while it isn't the prettiest solder its solid. Then I ground a wider hole in the door to accomodate the solder. And finally attached the hinges. And again through all of this I am testing the wiring to be sure it all still works. Last thing for today is to put Bondo on the lower door hinge area to hide my crimes. Next up, a bit of sanding and then painting!

Summary [ ]

Tricorder minigame - EF2

A tricorder minigame

Elite Force II is a follow-on to the hugely successful Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force . Developed by Ritual Entertainment and published by Activision , the game is a first-person shooter that employs the talents of some of Star Trek 's most recognized voice actors.

Following on from the original game, the player takes the role of Lieutenant Alexander Munro, a member of the specialist unit called the Hazard Team aboard the starship USS Voyager . Upon the ship's return from being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, the future of the Hazard Team is in doubt. Split up and posted to different assignments, the members of the Hazard Team return to their normal everyday duties. That is until Captain Jean-Luc Picard requests their help on the USS Enterprise -E .

Elite Force II possesses nearly double the levels of the original game with a story that takes the player from Starfleet Academy to the darkened halls of an abandoned Federation starship, to a secret base on the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone. With new features such as tricorder puzzles, hidden secrets and in-game bonuses, Elite Force II has hours of additional gameplay action.

Storyline [ ]

"endgame" [ ].

Voyager in a Borg Sphere - EF2

The USS Voyager trapped inside a Borg sphere

The first level follows the sequence of events of the Star Trek: Voyager episode " Endgame ". Voyager , having entered the Borg transwarp network , is en route to Earth at unimaginable speeds, but has been caught by a Borg sphere and trapped inside. It is up to the Hazard Team, led by Lt. Munro (aka the player) to beam into the sphere and utilize every bit of knowledge about the Borg to free the vessel before it is assimilated .

"Reassignment" [ ]

Having returned to the Alpha Quadrant , Munro is assigned by a Starfleet flunky to teach at the Academy . Skipping ahead two years to 2380 , Munro is teaching his Klingon student Korban in a holodeck program. At the end of the program, they leave the holodeck to see their session had been observed by Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He is interested in the idea of a Hazard Team for the USS Enterprise -E , and organizes Munro's transfer.

"Derelict" [ ]

Before Munro can settle in on the Enterprise , they receive a distress call from the USS Dallas , an Excelsior -class starship in orbit of an Attrexian station. The Attrexians are a race seeking Federation membership. Boarding the vessel in environmental suits, Munro must get the vessel back online and find out what happened to it, as well as being reunited with an old friend – Telsia Murphy, one of Munro's former partners on the Voyager Hazard Team.

"Demise" [ ]

Realizing the Dallas was attacked by a creature who can chew through a tritanium hull while responding to a distress call from the Attrexians, Munro and his team are shuttled down to the station to protect the Attrexians and to try and find out more about the creatures.

"Discovery" [ ]

Following the ion trail from the creature's impulse drive after being forced out of the station, they find an Idryll planet, a primitive slave race of the Attrexians who believe they existed before the Attrexians. Meeting some Idryll scientists, the Hazard Team find out the creatures, known as Exomorphs, are manufactured from the raw materials in the planet's core as slaves, but have malfunctioned to become "evil."

"Destruction", "Remove and Disable" [ ]

USS Enterprise E - EF2

The USS Enterprise -E

Responding to another distress call from another Attrexian colony, the Enterprise warps in to find an Idryll ship waiting for them. The Hazard Team prepare to beam down, but the Idryll ship opens fire on the Enterprise when the shields are lowered. Picard discovers the Idryll are under Krindo's command – one of the scientists from the Idryll planet (the last level) who is furious that his colleague Kleeya chose to stay on the Enterprise to help stop the Exomorphs and to stay with Lt. Munro. Intruders beam in, and the Hazard Team deploy to fight off Krindo's forces.

"Search and Rescue" [ ]

Finally able to shuttle down to the Attrexian planet, the Hazard Team renders whatever aid they can.

"Payback" [ ]

Tracking Krindo to a nearby planet, and with the Enterprise under repair, the Hazard Team shuttle to the Idryll planet after him. Krindo only stops the attacks when he realizes his father is helping the Attrexians on the planet under attack.

"Mercenaries" [ ]

Krindo confesses he made money to fund his expedition by selling priceless artifacts and secrets of the expedition to a Ferengi . Krindo surmises that the Ferengi decoded the location of the Master Control Facility, which can override all other Exomorph controls. After arranging to meet this Ferengi on an old starbase, he is captured (by the player).

"Incognito" [ ]

The Ferengi eventually divulges he sold the location of the Master Control Facility to a group of Romulans calling themselves the Empty Crown. Munro infiltrates the base of the Empty Crown, and discovers the location of the Master Control Facility.

"Endgame 2" [ ]

The final battle, in the Romulan Neutral Zone , to stop the Empty Crown utilizing the Exomorphs, who destroyed the once powerful Idryll civilization when they gained intelligence. Upon the successful completion of the mission, Captain Picard gives his thanks and notes that he intends to recommend to Starfleet that Hazard Teams become a standard component of capital ship crews.

Gameplay [ ]

Weapons and equipment [ ].

Advanced Compression Rifle - EF2

A player uses the Advanced Compression Rifle to kill an Exomorph

  • Phaser : standard hand phaser with two settings, normal and vaporize.
  • Phaser Compression Rifle : phaser rifle with two settings, normal and vaporize.
  • Enhanced Compression Rifle : a rapid fire version of the standard compression rifle, firing a series of compressed phased pulses. Comes with an integrated grenade launcher that fires a compressed phased grenade with instant detonation upon hitting a target.
  • Assault Rifle : the 24th century equivalent of a shotgun . Primary fires a plasma shot while secondary fires like a railgun with a blue tracer.
  • Sniper Rifle : high-powered single-shot rifle capable of disintegrating an enemy on a direct hit.
  • Grenade Launcher : improved version of the grenade launcher from the first game. Fires photon grenades that can be timed to explode near the enemy.
  • Attrexian Arc Launcher : standard rifle of the Attrexian people. Primary fire launches electric bolts at the target while secondary fires an EMP cloud that can be ignited with primary fire to electrify enemies.
  • Infinity Modulator : a weapon designed by Seven of Nine specifically for use against the Borg , the I-MOD constantly re-modulates its energy beam, making it impossible for the Borg to adapt to it in the conventional manner.
  • Tetryon Gatling Gun : fires a laser-like projectile at the target with the ability to bounce off surfaces in secondary mode.
  • Quantum Burst : essentially a hand-held quantum torpedo launcher with secondary fire mode providing a target acquisition feature.
  • Romulan Disruptor : the standard Romulan disruptor rifle fires green projectiles at the target with the ability to constantly recharge itself, providing for infinite energy.
  • Romulan Radiation Disruptor : hand-held weapon that fires an enormous radiation pulse at the target inflicting massive damage.
  • Klingon bat'leth : close-quarters Klingon weapon
  • Tricorder : standard Federation tricorder used to scan and reroute computer consoles and detect gas, heat and structural weaknesses.

Hidden bonuses [ ]

Elite Force II Mario secret area

The Super Mario-inspired side-scrolling game

There are numerous hidden bonuses and extras scattered throughout Elite Force II .

Throughout most levels in the game are "secret areas", locations within the game that can only be accessed by destroying a structurally weak wall or pressing a computer console, for example. These areas contain items such as extra health, armor and ammunition for the player to obtain. Perhaps the most interesting secret area can be found in the mission "Demise" whereby the player can jump down a pipe hidden away behind an destructable wall, taking them to an interactive Super Mario -style side-scrolling mini-game.

In addition to the normal secret areas, hidden throughout the game are 70 "golden starships". Styled after an Excelsior -class model, these ships can be collected to open up access to secret stand-alone levels, accessible through the game's main menu.

The final hidden bonus comes in the form of a secret in-game weapon called the Idryll Staff, which the player can acquire by finding and accessing specially hidden secret areas that require solving a puzzle.

Characters [ ]

Hazard team [ ], lieutenant alexander munro [ ].

Munro

Lieutenant Munro

Originally considered too reckless by Lieutenant Commander Tuvok when the team was formed aboard the USS Voyager , Munro proved himself a skilled and capable leader of the Hazard Team, but is also very willing to undertake dangerous mission objectives on his own. Now promoted to Lieutenant after the incident with the Forge , Lieutenant Munro is assigned to teach small-group tactics at Starfleet Academy after the return of Voyager before being noticed by Captain Jean-Luc Picard . The esteemed captain asks Munro to recreate the Hazard Team aboard the USS Enterprise . After requesting transfers for most of the old team to the Enterprise , and gaining some new promising members as well, Munro leads one of the most elite teams in the Alpha Quadrant.

Ensign Telsia Murphy [ ]

Telsia Murphy is proficient with long range weaponry and an excellent sniper. She has close affections to her superior, Lieutenant Munro, but is able to keep her emotions under control while on missions. Although reluctant to engage in a combat situation, Chell is a valuable member of the team in alien environments. Assigned to a research outpost after the return of Voyager , Chell is also called away from that duty to serve aboard the Enterprise . He takes his old job of the Hazard Team's field technician specialist, and couldn't be happier.

Ensign Austin Chang [ ]

Chang, Elite Force II

Loyal to her superiors and the Federation, Jurot puts the well-being of others above her own. After the return of Voyager , she returned to the Vulcan Science Academy to further hone her skills. After reactivating her Starfleet commission, she was more than pleased to return to the Hazard Team aboard the Enterprise .

A devious Ferengi weapons trader, Omag sold the location of the Exomorph control facility to Romulan Commander Suldok on the promise it wouldn't be used against any Ferengi world. Critical reception [ ]

Reception to Elite Force II was generally positive with reviewers praising the graphical enhancements over the original game as well as the balance maintained between action, stealth and storyline.

Mark Smith of Game Chronicles enjoyed the storyline and missions, praising the ability to walk around the Enterprise between missions and the sound quality of the weapons. He was, however, disappointed with the tricorder minigames which he described as " stimulating but terribly simple, even on the hardest levels. " [1]

PC Arena awarded the game a 9/10 rating, enthusiastically writing, " The effects look like they came right out of the series and the voiceovers, as expected are top-notch. Some of the character's jokes really catch you off guard and if you're as geeky as the rest of us, you'll be foaming at the mouth before you know it. " [2]

While he gave the game an 8.4/10 "Great" rating, IGN 's Ivan Sulic was disappointed with the game's simplicity, writing, " If you need to seriously think while playing, you're going to seriously need to head back to grammar school and play with the colored blocks. " Sulic praised the improvements made from the first installment but labelled the game a "twitch shooter", fun for those players who enjoy slaughtering " enemies at a frantic pace and in cliched situations ". [3]

Similarly, Computer Games Magazine deplored the game's " lackluster level design " and " turgid story " awarding it a 5/10 rating [4] , while Tom Bramwell of Eurogamer complained about the game's " inability to innovate consistently " with little to no replay value. [5]

Elite Force II holds a rating of 78% on Metacritic and 80% on GameRankings .

Appendices [ ]

Background information [ ], development [ ].

Activision announced the development of a sequel to Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force set in the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation in July 2002 , with the premise of the first game's lead character, Munro, transferring to the Enterprise -E. Executive Vice President of Activision Worldwide Studios Larry Goldberg voiced his excitement for the game: " incredible graphics, exotic environments, great characters, excellent teammate A.I. and, of course, the richness of the Star Trek universe – this game has it all! " ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 3 , p. 6)

Elite Force II was the final game published by Activision following a long-running dispute with Star Trek license holder Viacom . [6] [7] [8] It was also one of the last games to be developed on the id Tech 3 game engine. [9]

A limited edition bundle of the game was released in Australia which included an exclusive Elite Force II -themed messenger bag.

Continuity [ ]

The voice actors behind Munro, Telsia, Chang and Jurot reprise their roles from the original Elite Force game, as does Tim Russ as Tuvok. According to conversations with non-player character crew members during certain levels, William T. Riker (and presumably Deanna Troi ) are no longer on the Enterprise , presumably assigned to the USS Titan following Riker's promotion in Star Trek Nemesis . However, several other cast members of Star Trek: The Next Generation are absent as well, the most prominent being Doctor Crusher and Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge , the latter being replaced as Chief Engineer by Lieutenant Reginald Barclay . Worf is described as being on shore leave during the events of the game and is thus replaced temporarily by Tuvok.

In the original game, Chell was voiced by Derek McGrath , who played the same character in " Learning Curve " and " Repression ". In Elite Force II he is voiced by Andy Milder who previously appeared on-screen as the Bolian Boq'ta in " Empok Nor ", as well as voicing Brex in Star Trek: Bridge Commander .

The choice to play as a male or female character (named Alexander or Alexandria, respectively) was present in the first game but is removed from the sequel. This also marks the first time a Denobulan has appeared in a Star Trek video game.

Among the images displayed on various LCARS screens is a picture of Enterprise NX-01 , the Apollo 11 mission, the Female Changeling and the D'Arsay from TNG : " Masks ".

The Dallas survivors use the transporter to store their bio patterns and await rescue from the Hazard Team, the same technique Montgomery Scott uses in TNG : " Relics ". Among the survivors is Scotty's great-granddaughter, Katarina Scott, who references the technique in-game.

During the mission "Mercenaries", a male Andorian and a female Klingon can be overheard negotiating for transport with a Human freighter captain in the bar on the Klingon station. The Andorian states he requires a large vessel to which the Human boasts her Wodan -class cargo ship can outhaul even the largest Romulan D'deridex -class starship. When asked what the cargo is, the Andorian replies, " Only myself, ten transport containers of domesticated targ and no questions asked. " They then disagree on the fee with the Klingon stating they could purchase their own Bird-of-Prey for the price the Human is asking. Eventually, they agree to pay half of the fee at the time and the second half when they reach their destination. This entire exchange is a reference to the famous cantina scene featuring Obi Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker asking Han Solo for transport on the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars : Episode IV A New Hope .

In the mission "Incognito", the player overhears two Romulans discussing how long their Starfleet prisoner will last before cracking under the pressure of interrogation. One of the Romulans comments that a previous Starfleet prisoner resisted the attempts of a Cardassian interrogator, a reference to Jean-Luc Picard's capture in " Chain Of Command, Part I " and " Chain Of Command, Part II ".

We are still waiting to learn if this will be a full-season, 20 episode drop all at once, or if Netflix is planning to roll out Prodigy Season 2 in some sort of weekly release strategy; there are even some Netflix series which release on a multiple-episodes-per-week schedule, stretching a season over a three to five-week timetable.

JUNE 4 UPDATE: We’ve confirmed with CBS Studios that all 20 episodes of Season 2 will be dropping at once on July 1, on Netflix in the United States and all other regions worldwide where Netflix has distribution rights.   Netflix does NOT have distribution in Canada, Nordics, CEE, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Belarus, or Mainland China. The release schedule for both Canada (on CTV Sci Fi) and SkyShowtime (for the Nordics, Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Central and Eastern Europe) is still unknown.

As soon as we have confirmation of more scheduling plans for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2, along with any new promotional images or trailers, we’ll be sure to update this post with that information. In the meantime, mark your calendars for the return of Dal, Gwyn, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog, Zero, Murf, and Admiral Janeway!

Update 56 – Voyager Pt 3 Patch Notes

By Star Trek 4 July 2023

star trek voyager tricorder

Commanders, “A Borg Sphere is orbiting a Progenitor Installation in Dareb. From what we can tell, the Borg have yet to gain access.” The Borg have been suspiciously quiet since their defeat over the Arcaelans, but the Voyager crew know that it is only a matter of time before the Queen’s newest machination reveals itself. They need to find out what she’s up to and put an end to it. Just as their investigation begins, Voyager and the Commander are drawn into a decades-long conflict between the Coalition and Insurgence. With the Borg threat ever looming, the Voyager crew scrambles to find a diplomatic solution. They soon realize that things are more complex – and dangerous – than they first appeared. Meanwhile, the Commander and Tuvok search for an ancient technology created by a people called the Pakik, who were stranded in the Delta Quadrant millennia ago. It could be a way home… or a weapon of mass destruction. “We need to be very careful. Who knows what the Coalition or Insurgence might do if they got their hands on this technology.”

  • Voyager Pt 3 is here, and along with it:
  • A new activity, Q’s Trials
  • New Ship Enhancements – Forbidden Tech

New Officers

New missions, q’s trials and forbidden tech.

Forbidden Tech can be slotted in your ships to acquire significant buffs and meaningfully increase their power. Voyager Part 3 includes 12 Trials of increasing difficulty and 15 unique pieces of Forbidden Tech. Log in to claim your first Tech and build the Court of Q! Forbidden Tech is a brand new way to customize the many different ships in your fleet. Located next to the bridge officers, an unlockable slot will be available for all ships once they achieve tier 2. This is where you’ll be able to equip one of fifteen different Forbidden Tech items. By collecting Forbidden Tech Fusion Rods, you’ll be able to unlock the Forbidden Tech capability on a ship. This technology was brought by Q and provides extremely powerful benefits when equipped to a ship. Starting with one enhancement, Forbidden Tech can be upgraded, and depending on the rarity of the item, can give up to 4 enhancements to the ship that it’s equipped to. These enhancements range from massive bonuses when going against any target in the galaxy to increasing the combat effectiveness of your cloaking capabilities. Q may bring with them chaos, but he also does provide incredible rewards to the worthy. Complete in Q’s Trials to prove your worth and gain access to this new technology.

Sebuah koloni lebah juga pernah mengerumuni lokasi syuting selama pembuatan serial TV Star Trek: The Original Series episode kedua, Where No Man has Gone Before (1966).

Leonard Nimoy mendapat banyak surat ketimbang pemeran Star Trek lainnya.

No Lego, but Bluebrixx: Flörsheimer presents Star Trek mini-figures

Aroged

Evil tongues claim that these are the real Star Trek series. To be on the safe side, we say “the first five” (which usually doesn't include the animated series). So it's about the original series, TOS for short, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. Or more precisely: it's about the first associated mini-figures from the German interlocking brick supplier and Lego competitor Bluebrixx. The Flörsheim-based company has already sold quite a few Enterprises in recent months and years. Although the range is now huge, the matching mini-figures were missing until now. The Flörsheim-based company has now presented them in a new product video.

Lego-style mini-figures: Of course, they must not look like the market leader

Mini-figures from a Lego competitor – many manufacturers have already been burned by this. Lego doesn't like it when alternative suppliers copy the figures. The Danes don't like it when Lego is used in connection with competing suppliers as a generic term for interlocking bricks – like Tempo for paper tissues. The hero of the bricks can tell you all about it. But that's only mentioned in passing. The problem with the mini-figures goes deeper: they are actually protected by trademark law. Little men made of knobbly bricks must not look too similar, otherwise the supplier could face trouble. This is different with normal interlocking bricks. The patent for this expired years ago. Because the appearance is determined by the function, the clamping force, no permanent protection can be claimed for the shape.

Compromises in hairstyles and lots of prints

Kirk, Picard, Sisko and co. are not immediately reminiscent of Lego either. In the video, the Flörsheim-based company presents some of them with very interesting hairstyles, unfortunately only as a photo, because the goods were apparently not delivered. At the same time, prototypes of the sets with construction workers as figures are shown and there is also a lot to tell. The images are quite high-resolution and reveal some interesting details. Badges and Klingon forehead ridges are shown not in the form of stickers, but in printed form.

The hairstyles sometimes look wild. However, a modular system is also used here. Niklas and Jo from Bluebrixx explain that they experimented for a long time, striving for the best possible compromise. Riker's hair looks fuller than it does in TNG or the films. A similar hairstyle does exist, but with the hair parted in the wrong direction. This one detail meant that the little plastic man no longer looked like Riker at all.

When in doubt, customers have a choice. Picard's hairstyle, for example, a shorn ring of hair, is not available as a component. However, there is a medium-length ring and a completely bald head. Buyers have the choice and can build in the hairstyle that suits them best. It's similar with Quark. Ears do not exist in this format as interlocking blocks. That's a shame. But the bald head does. And a hairstyle that looks like Dumbo ears. The customer decides which fits better.

Bluebrixx continues to rely on standard parts. Even the spaceships did not have specially made molds, as we know them from planes and tanks from Cobi. We do not know whether this is due to the supplier Xingbao. It is probably simply not worth it for small runs. However, the Flörsheim-based company always knew how to use existing components creatively. When in doubt, colors and prints had to be made to work.

Also exciting : The Legend of Zelda: Lego is asking for 300 euros for 2,500 pieces

Bluebrixx with figures from all five “old” Star Trek series and a sixth set with blades

Lego competitor Bluebrixx has introduced its Star Trek mini-figures.

Source: Bluebrixx You have to do without the good Kes.

We've already dropped a few names. Basically, it's about the films mentioned at the beginning and their main characters. Supporting actors, even if they had many appearances, are missing: Garak, for example, or Nog. Tasha Yar didn't make it onto the set either: she died before the first TNG season was over. Kes is missing from Voyager, although she was part of the Voyager crew for three seasons. Apart from that, the cast is complete.

In all sets, the main characters gather around the captain's chair, with Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway and Archer sitting in it. Sisko didn't have a chair of this type on the station, so he sits on the one on the USS Defiant. In all five cases, the chair stands on a small platform. It is flanked by two large prints containing badges and names. So, again, no cheap stickers.

A sixth set is also being launched. This shows Commander Kruge from Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock with two of his officers, all with different forehead deserts, and an older James T. Kirk, now or temporarily an admiral. This mini-figure set matches the Bird of Prey, which Bluebrixx has already released four times: in large, medium and small, as well as a medium-sized camouflaged ship.

Advertisement: The large model can currently be purchased cheaper on Amazon with a 30 percent coupon. The price drops from 124.89 to 87.43 euros.

Small sets instead of bridge dioramas: Keeps the sets cheap and makes them easy to retrofit

According to the video, Bluebrixx deliberately chose small sets. They could have built a bridge diorama, but that would be time-consuming and expensive. This way, you can get the mini-figures cheaply as an addition to existing sets. There are already a few shuttles on the market (Galileo in the PCG test). If more are released, these will probably also be sold without figures.

The situation is different with the goal area from Stargate, which the Flörsheim-based company announced some time ago. You can now also find product images on the manufacturer's website – Colonel O'Neill, Teal'C and Co. are part of this set. Models such as the F-302 and X-303 can already be ordered.

star trek voyager tricorder

It remains uncertain when exactly the mini-figures will see the light of day. If previous Star Trek announcements are anything to go by, it could be a few weeks before the launch. We will also have to wait and see what the price point is. Experience has shown us that Lego is more expensive, but the license has its price. Nevertheless, so far we have found the Bluebrixx models to be anything but overpriced. In the shop, further down in the announcements, you can also find product pages with photos. According to this, the sets offer 100 to 200 pieces.

Epic released it without German subtitles: One year later, Star Trek: Resurgence is available on Steam

Star Trek: Resurgence is now available on Steam. It's classic Trek and even spawned a comic.

New tricorder also presented

In the same product video, Niklas and Jo present a tricorder made of 984 parts. It is not the first one ever – there was a TNG version before that – but it is the first from the era of the original series. The colors of the prototype are not final. But it already offers all kinds of prints to recreate the small tube monitor, for example. The prop even comes with a small, fold-out box in which samples were placed for analysis on Star Trek. The lanyard is not included. It would be difficult to make it as a real textile strap; it would not make sense to make it from tank tracks made of interlocking bricks. You can find out all this and much more in the 24-minute video on the Lego competitor's YouTube channel.
