I'm a Science Central Member!

Science Central Members must present their Science Central Membership card and photo ID at the Box Office of participating museums to receive reciprocal admission. These other museums are looking for the ASTC logo on your membership card.

Typically, at another museum, your membership will only cover your immediate family – those who live with you in your house. Always call in advance at that venue to confirm who is covered.

In short, it means that Memberships are intended for locals.

As a member of a participating science center or museum, you are eligible for ASTC (Passport Program benefits at 360+ other participating venues around the country and the world.

If you buy a Science Central Membership, and live within 90 miles of a large Science Center in another city (Indianapolis, Chicago, etc.), they might not honor it.  If this applies to you, we recommend checking with your local museum first.

As a member of a participating science center or museum, you are eligible for Passport Program benefits at other participating venues located outside of a 90-mile radius from the science center or museum of which you are a member and from your primary residence. If you are unsure if you are eligible for Passport Program benefits, contact the participating venue you wish to visit to verify your eligibility.

Science Central has special agreements with the closest centers to honor each other’s memberships.

Visiting ASTC members must present their membership card from your home science center and photo ID at our Admissions Desk, day of.  We are looking for the ASTC logo on the membership card from your home museum.

Membership is a great way to visit as often as you like. Science Central Memberships include admission for two named adults at the same address and any six children.

No, you will need to get your tickets day of at our admissions desk.  Unfortunately, this means that on our busiest of days, there is a chance that we will have no tickets when you arrive.  We recommend that you give us a call in advance.

We love to know who is visiting us and from where!  Maybe, someday, we’ll visit your science center!

Ready to renew your US passport? You can now apply online

WASHINGTON — There’s an easier way to renew your passport — online.

The State Department has opened a trial run allowing a limited number of people to apply for their updated travel documents with a few clicks. You can’t just start anytime — windows will open at midday Eastern time each day and then close once the system has reached its daily limit.

The department says it’s taking it slow so it can monitor how the system is working. There are also a series of requirements to meet to be able to apply online, including:

— You’re 25 or older.

— You’re renewing a passport issued between 2009 and 2015.

— You aren’t changing any personal information.

— You won’t travel overseas for at least eight weeks after you apply.

There are plenty of other criteria on the State Department’s travel website, where you have to create an account to renew online. Expedited service still has to be done by mail.

It comes after travelers faced massive wait times to renew their documents amid a backlog blamed on lingering pandemic effects like staffing shortages and a pause in online processing last year that flooded the agency with applications.

Current processing time for a routine passport renewal is six to eight weeks.

You Lost Your Passport. Now What?

Summer travel season is upon us. Do you know where your passport is?

An illustration of a traveler, with a rolling suitcase and holding a passport in one hand, walking in front of the open pages of a passport.

By Seth Kugel

While just about every other document is accessible online, a lost passport is one of the last analog emergencies that can derail an international trip.

Here’s a guide to replacing a lost passport according to how fast you need it, how much money you have to spare and where you live. (The process for last-minute renewals of expired passports, by the way, is fairly similar.)

If you’ve got at least three weeks

You’ll be OK. On the State Department website, at travel.state.gov/passports , first report your passport lost and then follow the process for a replacement. On the website, you’ll find a list of 7,500 passport acceptance facilities — including post offices, public libraries and clerk of court offices — where you can make an appointment or, in most cases, come during scheduled walk-in hours. They’ll verify your documents and send them to the State Department, and you’ll get your passport in the mail.

Before the day of your appointment, check what you need to bring , a list that will include at least proof of U.S. citizenship, payment (acceptable forms vary by facility), the right forms (for lost passports, that’s the DS-11 and DS-64) and at most facilities, a properly taken photo .

The “routine” processing time to replace a passport takes six to eight weeks and costs $165; choose the “expedited” service, for an additional $60, to receive your passport in two to three weeks.

You might even get yours “faster than advertised,” said Matt Pierce, a managing director of passport services for the State Department, noting that the pandemic-era backlog was cleared up as of December.

Avoid delays by carefully following instructions, and consider spending an additional $19.53 for faster shipping.

When time is tighter

If your trip is less than three weeks away, you’ll need to take the extra step of going through one of 26 passport processing offices across the United States. If you’re doing it without an outside expediter, you must make an appointment online or over the phone, up to 14 days in advance of your trip.

There are no more walk-ins, an option before the pandemic, but the State Department has increased capacity to eliminate the need for them, Mr. Pierce said, and the offices give special priority to documented “ life-or-death emergencies ” of immediate family members. You’ll need to bring all of your documents, and proof you are traveling soon — like a plane or cruise reservation.

Things can get dicey if you need an appointment in the next day or two. In such cases you can call for an appointment, or contact your local member of Congress.

Laurie Lee, the chief executive of Chicago-based Swift Passport and Visa Services , an expediter, has seen cases where clients on the verge of missing a wedding or another once-in-a-lifetime event spend hours refreshing the site to find a last-minute appointment, and even end up booking flights across the country if they can find an opening. That, of course, costs both time and money.

At the passport office, the process will be similar, except that you’ll likely be able to pick up your passport later in the day. In most cases, said Mr. Pierce, you won’t have to return the next day, but it can happen. (You can also have your passport mailed to you, if you have time.)

Using an expediter

If you have at least three business days and are willing to spend hundreds of dollars for help, consider Swift or one of the other 200-plus agencies registered with the State Department as couriers, or expediters.

Expediters are especially helpful for people who live far from the nearest passport office and cannot or do not want to drive or fly there. But they can also benefit anyone having trouble getting a timely appointment, because they have reserved slots that allow them to bring a client application directly to certain passport offices. Swift, for example, can bring 10 applications a day to the Boston office, and five to the Chicago one. Depending on urgency, Swift’s assistance costs between $155 and $599.

To work with an expediter, you will still need to go to your local passport acceptance facility, like a post office, where workers verify and seal your documents in an envelope, which you then send (or hand-deliver) to the expediter. They’ll take care of the rest, and get your new passport back to you.

What can go wrong

If you’re traveling to a passport agency, leave plenty of time to get there. Screwing up something on the form can also lead to delays that cost you your trip.

“Common errors include signing in the wrong place, not putting the date on their application, having an incorrectly sized passport photo or not being framed correctly in the photo,” said Steve Diehl, chief corporate development officer of CIBTvisas , a large expediter.

Once you get it

When your passport arrives, make digital and paper copies. Change your number on trusted traveler programs like Global Entry, and remember that if your old passport had a visa in it for the country you’re headed to, you’ll also need to rush a replacement of that.

If you do find your old passport later, keep it as a souvenir: It is no longer valid.

If you lose it while abroad

First of all, try not to. Unless you are traveling in a country that strictly requires you to have your passport on your person at all times, stow it in a hotel safe and carry around a photocopy, plus your drivers license.

But if you do lose the passport or have it stolen, report it online to protect yourself from identity theft and then contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for an emergency appointment. You’ll need that paper or a digital copy of your passport, plus similar documents to what you would need for a replacement in the United States. You may receive either an actual replacement passport or an emergency version, usually good for one year.

In a real emergency, you can try a last ditch maneuver: Ask the airline to contact U.S. Customs and Border Patrol to seek permission for you to enter the country without a passport.

Preventative measures

Several expediters advised that many of their clients misplaced their passports during recent moves, so when you pack up your home, be sure to remember where your passport is packed.

Oh, and before you give up on that lost passport, check your home copier or scanner. “I can’t tell you how often people find it in their copy machine,” said Ms. Lee.

An earlier version of this article transposed numbers on a form needed to replace a lost passport with the U.S. government. It is the DS-64 form, not the DS-46.

Security for Security Chris Tang on Wednesday defended the authorities’ move to axe the passports of Nathan Law, Christopher Mung, Finn Lau, Simon Cheng, Johnny Fok and Tony Choi. The six are wanted by authorities under the national security law.

He said UK politicians had been “slandering” the Hong Kong government since the national security law was enacted, and that the UK had been offering protection to the six people while they continued to endanger national security. The UK had also arrested three people linked to a Hong Kong government trade office in London under a British national security law, Tang said, citing the Chinese embassy in the UK which called the case “fabricated.”

Asked by a reporter whether cancelling passports ran counter to the UN’s International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, of which Hong Kong is a signatory, Tang said no.

“There is absolutely no contravention to the covenants that you have quote[d],” Tang said. “According to all those covenants… there are exceptions because of national security grounds.”

Tang added: “This is not just applicable to Hong Kong. It applies to all civilised society.”

Lau, one of the activists, tweeted that he holds only a British National (Overseas) passport and has never owned, nor applied for, a Hong Kong passport. “It is ridiculous to cancel something that never exists,” he wrote .

Tang did not respond directly to a reporter’s question about how many of the six UK-based activists held Hong Kong passports. He said the measure also barred them from applying for Hong Kong passports in the future.

Nathan Law

The government announced on Wednesday morning that it was exercising powers under Article 23 – the city’s new homegrown national security law – to label Law, Mung, Lau, Cheng, Fok and Choi as “specified absconders.” The designation allows authorities to cancel their Hong Kong passports, bar them from buying or renting property in the city, and forbid others from engaging in financial transactions with them, among other measures.

The city passed Article 23 in March after fast-tracking it through the Legislative Council, which has been stripped of opposition since an electoral reform three years ago ensured only those deemed “patriots” by the authorities can run.

The law targets treason, insurrection, sabotage, external interference, sedition, and theft of state secrets and espionage. Similar to the Beijing-imposed national security law, offenders face up to life in prison.

Wanted activists

The six activists are among 13 police issued arrest warrants for under the Beijing-imposed national security law last year, first in July and again in December . They were accused of offences including subversion and collusion with foreign forces.

Barrister Kevin Yam listed as one of the eight people wanted by the national security police. He has been accused of colluding with foreign powers to endanger national security

The others include ex-lawmakers Ted Hui and Dennis Kwok, solicitor Kevin Yam, and activists Joey Siu and Frances Hui. They are based in the US and Australia.

National security police placed HK$1 million bounties on their hands, appealing for members of the public to come forward with information that could lead to their arrest.

The Hong Kong-based family members of some of the activists have been taken in for questioning by national security police after authorities sought their arrests.

Regarding the other activists, Tang said on Wednesday that the authorities would “review the situation from time to time” and take action when needed.

Tang emphasised that it was an offence to give funds to people specified as absconders, or handle funds linked to them.

National security law

When asked by a reporter whether it was illegal to be members of activists’ subscription-based platforms such as Patreon or YouTube, Tang said: “It is a violation of our rules for anybody using any means, regardless of platform, to provide funds to these people or help them handle funds.”

A woman arrested under Article 23 in late May in a case related to activist Chow Hang-tung was also suspected of violating the Beijing-imposed security legislation by funding Law . The woman was accused of “providing pecuniary or other financial assistance or property for the commission of secession by other persons.”

Beijing imposed a national security law in Hong Kong following months of protests that began in the summer of 2019, when demonstrators opposed a controversial extradition bill that would have allowed the transfer of fugitives to mainland China for trial. The unrest grew into protests against the Hong Kong Kong and Beijing authorities, as well as allegations of police’s use of excessive force.

Dozens of civil society organisations disbanded in the wake of the legislation, citing a chilling effect. Meanwhile, scores of activists have emigrated abroad and continued their advocacy overseas.

What it was like to be first on the scene after the Jonestown massacre

Some of the first people to touch down in Guyana in November 1978 remember what they saw at the scene where over 900 people died.

By November 1978, U.S. Air Force Special Operations sergeant David Netterville had served for nearly seven years and had completed a tour in Vietnam. But nothing could’ve prepared him for what he saw in Jonestown , a commune led by Jim Jones in the forests of Guyana.

“It was unprecedented,” says Netterville, who gave his first ever broadcast   interview for the National Geographic docuseries Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown . “I was just totally shocked at the number of bodies that were laying on the ground.”

(Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown will premiere June 17 on Hulu and August 14 on National Geographic )

The victims had been members of Peoples Temple, a religious movement Jones founded in the United States. In the 1970s, Jones had led them from California to Guyana, where they built Jonestown. Jones promised it would become a utopia. Instead, Jones gave them death.

Arriving at Jonestown   on November   20,   Washington Post   reporter Charles Krause did not immediately register the mass of colors on the ground below as an unfathomable number of human bodies. “It just looked like confetti that had been thrown around it,” he says. “But each of those pieces of confetti was the shirt or dress or something of a dead person.”

Just two days   before, on November 18, 1978, Jones compelled   many in   his congregation to consume a cyanide cocktail and end their lives. Though he had trained the community to prepare for   their deaths, there is evidence that some people may have been forced to consume the poison unwillingly or had it injected into them.

Many fathers, mothers, children, teachers, and nurses remained   where they had fallen. For the first responders who arrived days after the massacre, it was a scene they would never forget.

Counting the dead

Since Jonestown’s population was primarily Americans, officials called in   the U.S. military to gather information. Netterville and his team did not know what happened there—only that Congressman Leo Ryan had been gunned down near the commune.

Both Netterville and Krause remember the same thing about approaching the site: the unmistakable, horrific smell of death. The scent even invaded the helicopters high above. As Netterville explains, “A human body is the worst smell you can ever smell. Multiply a dead cow times ten.” To mask the odor as much as possible, he eventually fashioned a mask by “cut[ting] a bandana out of a pillowcase and put[ting] Old Spice lotion on it.”

The bodies, already attracting bugs, were decomposing in the heat and humidity. “The bodies were so bloated that […] it was very hard to distinguish who they were,” says Krause, who was one of the first journalists to arrive at Jonestown after the massacre.

The scene was made even more horrific when the first responders noticed the children, who ranged in age from babies to teenagers. Netterville recalls, “Some of the people that died were actually holding onto their children.”

Animals weren’t spared: Netterville remembers seeing the bodies of murdered dogs. Someone had even taken the time to shoot Mr. Muggs, a chimpanzee that came with Peoples Temple from California . “I just could not believe it. Why would you kill the animals?”

Netterville remembers his team divided the land into sections and started counting corpses, one after the other. They initially calculated 450 bodies. When they radioed headquarters with the tally, Netterville remembers “they didn’t want to believe us… They had us repeat that number three times.”

As horrific as that number was, it turned out to be a massive undercount. “We didn’t know there were people underneath. They were laying on top of each other,” Netterville recalls.

With each new discovery, the death toll of the November massacre climbed higher and higher. The final total was 918 souls, 909 of whom died on site .

Jonestown, frozen in time

Now a ghost town, Jonestown eerily exhibited remnants of the commune’s final, chaotic hours––paper cups strewn across the ground, syringes scattered on tables, people holding onto each other as death came for them.

A 55-gallon drum was found containing a purplish   concoction––a cocktail of cyanide, sedatives , and Flavor-Aid. Netterville remembers military personnel dumped it out on the ground.

Jim Jones’s cabin acted as a window into how he ran the Peoples Temple.   “He had several pictures there of his family,” Netterville says. He had leveraged his interracial family to manipulate the press and members of the congregation while he tried to dodge allegations of abuse within the community.

Netterville used a crowbar he found to pry open a large safe in Jones’s house. “It was full of social security checks” from the senior residents who contributed their monthly payments to the commune, he remembers. It also included “boxes of passports. [Jones] took the passports so that people could not leave.”

Some had managed to escape death in those final hours, however. Odell Rhodes had seen the early stages of the massacre before hiding and fleeing to a nearby village. Hyacinth Thrash was asleep in her bed when the killings started, and so she survived.

Tim Carter, another survivor, was tasked with a special mission just as the killings began on November 18. One of Jones’s mistresses asked him to take suitcases of money to the embassy of the Soviet Union in Georgetown.

The assignment enabled Carter to walk out of Jonestown alive––but not before seeing his wife and baby die. “After that, I was beyond even thinking. All I heard in my brain is, ‘You cannot die, you cannot die, you cannot die, you must live, you must live, you must live.’”

The ones who didn’t survive left Jonestown in body bags. Some were claimed by their family and privately buried. The remaining 409 were interred in a mass grave in Oakland, California.

Though the work of first responders was over, the act of witnessing Jonestown’s horror left its mark. After using Old Spice to mask the stench of death, the scent still haunts Netterville. “I don’t use [Old Spice] anymore. I can’t stand the smell of it ever again.”
