What to do when your fountain pen won't write.

Is your fountain pen not writing ? Are you experiencing no ink flow? Or, is your pen leaking ink uncontrollably? You've come to the right place. In this post, we offer quick tips to help get your pen writing again.

One of the most frustrating experiences in using any tool is when it doesn't work when you want. Most fountain pens should start writing right away. But, there may be certain instances where you would need a little help to get your pen's ink flow going again. If you uncap your pen, start writing, and nothing comes out , here is what we would do, step-by-step:

Check the ink level

First, check the ink level. Naturally, a fountain pen not writing anymore if it's completely out of ink.. For most cartridge converter pens , you'll want to remove the section from the barrel and check the converter or cartridge to see if there is any more ink in the reservoir. If the reservoir is empty, then it's time to fill up once more. If ink is still sloshing around inside, then we need to move to step 2 and get that ink flowing again.

Shake and Tap

If there's still ink in the pen but the nib isn't writing, the nib itself might have dried out. Most likely, there's still more ink in the feed. But, it hasn't reached the tip of the nib just yet. That's when we can employ a simple technique to encourage ink flow.

Give the pen a shake over a paper towel or scrap piece of paper. Then gently give a tap tap taparoo on the paper with a figure-8 scribble to get that line going again.

One point we will advise here - Don't PRESS . An inexperienced writer might be inclined to put additional pressure on the nib when the fountain pen not writing. This technique may work for ballpoint pens but spells disaster for fountain pens. Pressing hard will most likely cause the tines to splay and for ink flow to stop completely.

Wet the nib

If the shake and tap method don't remedy the poor ink flow, wet the nib with some tap or distilled water. The water will reactivate any dried ink in the nib and should get a hard-starting pen started again.

After wetting the nib, the ink may come out a little light at first and then return to the color's full saturation. If the pen runs dry again, then let's take a more aggressive approach and flood the feed with ink.

Flood the feed

Flooding the feed forces ink from the reservoir to the nib. You would accomplish this by accessing your pen's filling mechanism. If it's a cartridge converter, open the pen and turn the converter's knob or squeeze the cartridge. If the pen is a piston-fill or otherwise, operate the filling mechanism to force ink out - just enough to become visible on the feed. For extra care and cleanliness, make sure there is a paper towel or scrap paper nearby to catch an accidental ink drop.

If the fountain pen is still not flowing after flooding the feed, then I suggest a full clean out. If you need help with cleaning your pen, watch our video on how to clean your fountain pens .

When a full clean out doesn't help and you don't have the tools or skills to adjust the nib, we recommend reaching out to the manufacturer or the retailer where you purchased the pen for additional help and service.

What if your pen is leaking?

So far, we have focused on what to do when your fountain pen won't write and you have little to no ink flow. What about the opposite? What should you do when your fountain pen is leaking ink or, in rare cases, when pens explode due to pressure changes or damage?

First, we need to find out where the excess ink is coming from. Take a paper towel and wipe the pen to see where it picks up the ink color.

Ink is on the grip section

If there is ink on the grip section, check the inside of the cap. Twist a paper towel into a point and wipe the inside of the cap. If the cloth becomes fully saturated, then we have a leaky nib. In that case, you'll want to make sure that the nib and feed are fully set into the section.

The nib and feed are usually part of a screw-out housing , if the housing is not screwed in all the way, it might lead to a leak. Make sure that housing is tightened by gripping the nib and feed and turning until it's tight.

Also, the nib and feed are friction-fit into the housing, so it would be advisable to make sure they are fully set into the housing by gripping the nib and feed and pushing them all the way into the housing.

If only a little bit of ink was found inside the cap and around the grip section, a slight jostle or bounce might have caused the pen to release a few drops of ink while being carried around. Not a big deal. It happens sometimes when carrying your pens around everywhere you go.

Ink is coming from the barrel

If ink is found at the juncture of the grip section and barrel, it might mean that there is a leak from inside the barrel. For a cartridge/converter pen, carefully check the connection of the cartridge or converter to the pen. If the connection is loose and covered with ink, that will tell you the seal is compromised. See if you can tighten the connection. If not, replace the converter or cartridge with a new one.

If ink is leaking from the barrel of a non-cartridge/converter pen, then there's a bigger problem to address. Since there are no parts to replace, you'll have to contact the brand's warranty service repair department to see if they can help fix the barrel or filling mechanism.

If there is excessive ink on the nib, that's called nib creep and really isn't a problem.

Quick tips to fix ink flow problems

Make sure to have your fountain pen capped when not in use. Leaving your pen uncapped for periods longer than a minute may cause issues with hard-starting or poor ink flow. Also, leaving an uncapped pen on a desk surface may spell certain doom if it rolls off the table.

Just like buffalo chicken wings may not agree with your digestive system, a particular fountain pen ink may not agree with your pen. If you are experiencing flow issues, change the ink to see if it improves.

Another variable to address is your paper. Toothy papers may leave fibers in the nib slit and cause trouble with skipping and poor ink flow. Change your paper and see if it improves.

Ink flow really bad on my brand new Lamy Safari

I've never owned a Lamy before. I had a couple basic fountain pens 20 years ago, bought a cheap Hong Dian Black Forest pen last month, loved it, decided to buy a Lamy because I figured it would be a step up. 

I cannot get this thing to consistently write. The ink in it now is Lamy Mango in a cartridge. Mine did not come with a converter but did come with another blue cartridge that I have also tried. The nib it came with was EF, but, I also bought two stubs, the 1.1 and the 1.9. I flushed the pen initially because it had been inked before. I installed the cartridge, primed it by lightly squeezing the cartridge and the pen is scratchy as anything. I can only write about three sentences before it dries completely and I have to unscrew it, squeeze the cartridge again, and that lets me write another few sentences. The performance is exactly the same with each nib. I don't understand what is wrong with this thing. I could understand the EF being scratchy, but, the ink should be flowing easily out of either stub. It's weird that none of them work. Can the flow just be defective? I ask because when I squeeze the cartridge, ink flows out behind the feed, where the feed enters the pen, not in between the feed and the nib. I disassmbled it again and used a syringe to force water through it, but, same thing. 

I don't get this, I bought a conklin at the same time, put the cartridge in and just wrote with it. Is there something just wrong with this Lamy?

Could it be the cartridge is damaged or not seated well? I only use a converter and didn't get it seated once and had some flow problems. After removing and re-seating the pen worked as before. I've got two fine points which are not scratchy and quite wet.

I unseated it, reseated it and then tried another one just in case that one was defective. No such luck unfortunately. 

I ran into this problem with my Dialog 3 as well, though not as badly as your are experiencing. I tried it with a variety of inks, and the drier inks were definitely more susceptible to this. I think Mango is a pretty dry ink, and I don't think Lamy blue is particularly wet. 

I would definitely check the nib tines and see if they are spaced properly. The Medium nib I got on my Dialog was tuned waaaay too dry with a lot of nib tine contact, and opening up the tines was the first thing that made a significant difference in the flow. I also made sure to give it a good washing with a touch of ammonia and dishwashing soap to really flush things out. I did find that I had to seat the cartridge much further than I expected, and then I got decent flow, but it is still a bit on the inconsistent side with the converter. 

One thing I can confirm is that with my pen I think I am getting air bubbles in the feed and this is leading to ink starvation like you experienced. If I write a little bit with the pen and then give it a flick to ensure that I get the ink/air interchange working properly, the flow is more consistent. So far, adjusting the nibs made the biggest difference, with using a wetter ink and making sure that the feed wasn't blocked by an air bubble both making other measurable differences. 

The EF nibs on the Lamy Safaris I have around here are not at all scratchy, so I suspect that you may have some tine misalignment to go along with overly tight tines. 

In all my tests, I have not needed to prime the feed at all. If you haven't done so already a good soak of the section might due wonders for the pen.

If you've tried these 2 solutions, and it seems you have, if you have flushed the pen and if you've tried using it with three different nibs, perhaps there is a problem with the feed. Is there a gap between the feed and nib? That might be the problem.

In any case, this should not be happening. This model is known to be a solid performer and if all fails, I would return it to the shop or contact Lamy to get a replacement.

Unfortunately, I only have those two Lamy colors at the moment, so I can't test another one. But, that's an interesting idea, that perhaps I just ended up with really dry ink. 

None of the nibs had much of any spacing, I follow a video for instructions on widening them, basically just using a bit of pressure when writing with them. You can at least see there is a slight gap now. I've flicked the heck out of this pen. If I don't open it and squeeze the cartridge periodically, I still have no ink. 

Most reputable pen dealers will at lest talk to you on the phone or via email in an attempt to resolve your dissatisfaction.

In 12 years of buying (opens drawer and counts...9) Lamy Safari and AlStar pens, I've not had a single bad experience--they all work a charm. But Lamy makes millions of these things, one or two bad units are going to slip through. 

If you had another, properly functioning Safari or AlStar, you could examine the feeds with a loupe and compare physical appearance and maybe see what's wrong. Could be a simple flashing of plastic from a mold impeding ink flow or something even easier to fix yourself. 

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

I've got lots and lots of Lamy Safaris (plus a Vista and several Al Stars).  What you are experiencing is indeed unusual.  The quality control on Lamy's standard (i.e. steel) nib is a little hit and miss.  Whilst the vast majority work very well, I have had one or two that needed tuning.  Given that you've already tried different nibs (with the same results), it's safe to say that the nib is likely not the problem.

Nib tuning issues aside, I have never experienced any issues with my Safaris.  My only suggestion is to soak the pen for an extended period.  Given that it was used previously, there is a chance that there is a blockage in the feed somewhere.  You can also pull out the feed for inspection, but that shouldn't be necessary.

Have to used your safari as a dip pen? If so, how was the experience?

The nib is definitely as high up as it can go. Well, I think I'm going to order another and compare, because the three nibs are pretty much working the same which leaves me with the problem being pen or ink as it seems unlikely that all three nibs are bad. I'm not a particularly fussy person, it's not that the pen isn't writing as nicely as I'd like, it's that it is not writing at all, or at least, the performance is so bad as to make a bag of pens from the dollar store look like an upgrade. 

I'm betting I just got a bad one, I'm going to just buy another to compare. I doubt they would be popular at all if people were regularly getting one like this one, so, I'm going to assume I just got the one in a thousand that doesn't work well. 

Just to say that you are not alone, I also have a LAMY pen that dries up, starts scraping, I shake it and let it sit for a while and it starts again. But I haven't followed all the advice given here, so after some new testing I can report back. Have done lots of cleansing but no tine adjustments. Btw it is an ALStar and I have several Safari that works perfect.

Felt the need to update this, my pen is working now. Not from anything I did, but, whatever was going wrong with the feed seems to have resolved itself. My cat must have been playing with it because I found it on the floor 10 feet away from the desk I left it on. Now it works. I don't understand how or why, I flicked it and shook it and cleaned it out repeatedly, but, apparently the cat playing with it overnight and dropping it off the table did the trick. 

Maybe it just needed to sit with ink in it a couple days? Maybe it getting rolled around by the cat helped?

Either way, wrote two pages worth of Mango just fine without a single issue. Even the EF nib is working fine. 

Sometimes it seems to me the feeds need some time with ink. Then they will work flawlessly. I don't know what the feeds are made of. But some plastics can accumulate water. Maybe the feeds need some time to get "wet".

I’ve never had significant issues with LAMY nibs - although I do think they get better with use (‘especially the steel nibs).  Calligraphy 1.1 mm nibs or EF can be difficult to use at first.  I had this issue with a new Lamy nib and Kyoto-Ono ink in Aonibi once.  I started to use the ink with broader nibs, and sometimes used the Lamy pens as a ‘dip pen’ at my desk. Just to get the flow going.  Give them time, and they start to write very well.

Did you flush the nib, feed and insides of the gripping section with (greatly diluted) detergent and/or aqueous ammonia solution, or perhaps a commercial pen flush product?

It could be that there was some machine grease or oils from manual handling during production that got onto the nib and needed dissolving with something other than just plain water; and solvents in inks may have done the trick slowly over a couple of days.

Yeah, the ink solvents gradually dissolving something makes more sense.. lol I didn't have a commercial pen flush product, this is only my third fountain pen and I'm still trying to figure out if I like them enough to really get into them. I'm at that phase where I just have a couple different ink cartridges and no bottled inks. I went through a time a couple years ago where I bought a bunch of brush tip markers, but, they weren't what I was looking for. If I'm still using these regularly a month from now, I'll probably buy all the related accessories and some bottled ink and so on. 

I'll point out that pen flush might not have helped, because I did do the ammonia and detergent flush of my Lamy and I still seem to be having the same issues, so even that's not enough some times. I do want to maybe try keeping it inked up and writing with it every day to see if that maybe fixes things. At any rate, it's really great that this issue has resolved itself. Those are some of the most frustrating, but sometimes convenient problems.

How to Set Up a Lamy Safari Fountain Pen for Drawing

I’ve been drawing for years but it was only recently that I started using fountain pens for drawing.

While disposable technical pens are convenient, they can be expensive in the long run because you have to replace them frequently. Plus the felt tips get worn out with use which creates ragged lines.

Fountain pens have a number of advantages over using technical pens. The Lamy Safari fountain pen has a steel tip with a tiny ball welded onto the end. Not only will the tip last a long time, it has a nice smooth feel when you draw with it.

When you run out of ink, you can just pop in another ink cartridge and continue drawing.

It’s also possible to use a converter so that you can fill it up with your own ink. This option opens up many possibilities for trying out new ink colors, and different types of inks.

Fountain pens do require a little bit of care but it’s not difficult or time consuming. They’re much easier to clean than a Rapidograph technical pen for example.

Which Fountain Pens Are Good for Drawing?

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is often recommended by artists for ink drawing. It’s a quality fountain pen that’s available at an affordable price. You can use disposable ink cartridges that are prefilled with ink. A converter is similar to a cartridge, but you can fill it with your own ink. I describe how to do this later in the post.

When I first looked into drawing with fountain pens the Lamy was recommend frequently by artists. Lamy Safari was also the pen that was recommend to me by Goldspot Pens .

Some fountain pens can cost hundreds of dollars so the Lamy Safari makes sense as a way to try it out without breaking your budget.

Fountain Pens vs Felt Tip Drawing Pens

There are some differences between fountain pens and the disposable technical pens.

For one, the ink that comes with the Lamy isn’t waterproof. This means that it will run when you apply watercolor over it. That’s something you can use for effect, but most artists are looking to avoid this.

Another important point is you don’t want to leave a fountain pen sitting around unused for months. Eventually, you’ll have issues with the ink not flowing properly because the ink is drying in the nib.

It’s a good idea to clean the ink out of your fountain pens if you plan on leaving them unused for extended periods.

In other words, there’s a little bit more maintenance with using a fountain pen but it’s not a big deal.

I use to use the technical pens from Rapidograph and those were difficult to clean. In comparison, these Lamy fountain pens are much easier to clean and fill up with ink. There are fewer parts in a fountain pen and they’re not as delicate.

What’s the Difference Between a Cartridge and a Converter?

A cartridge is a sealed plastic cylinder that’s filled with ink. Once you use up the ink, you can dispose of the it and install a new one. The design of the converter allows you to fill it with your own ink and it’s reusable. It has a plunger that you can move up or down by twisting the end of it.

Essentially, a converter works like a regular cartridge but it’s also reusable. This means you can buy a large bottle of your favorite fountain pen ink and fill the converter with it. Some inks aren’t available in cartridges, so this is a nice option.

Another benefit is that you can reuse the converter many times. A large bottle of ink should be less expensive than buying multiple prefilled cartridges.

You may find that you like the convenience of a cartridge. There’s nothing wrong with this. I use my yellow Lamy Safari for taking notes and for casual writing, so I use cartridges in it.

Regular fountain pen ink is usually water soluble so water will dissolve it. If you try to apply watercolor over the top of water soluble ink, it will ruin the drawing.

For drawing, I prefer an ink that isn’t water soluble. That’s where the converter comes into play. I like the Platinum Carbon ink. It’s water resistant and it’s safe to use in a fountain pen.

Sometimes you can use that as an effect to get softer lines. But in the post, I assume you’re looking to be ink that doesn’t run as you brush over it with watercolor.

Filling a converter is an extra step, but once you try it, you’ll find that it’s rather simple to do.

The converter is also useful when it comes time to clean out your fountain pen. That’s because the piston will allow you to dip the nib into water and draw ink in and out of the converter and through the nib.

This will help to flush out the ink, which I demonstrate in the video.

Is It Necessary to Flush Out a Lamy Fountain Pen Before Use?

Lamy tests out their pens in the factory with blue Lamy ink, so you might want to flush it out if you’re changing colors or brands of ink. If you’re filling it with the same type of ink and color, then it’s probably not necessary unless you’re having issues with clogging.

Lamy tests each fountain pen to ensure that each pen is working properly. One small issue is that some traces of the blue ink are still in the pen.

The traces of blue ink aren’t an issue at all if you plan on using the blue Lamy ink that comes with the pen.

Some people just fill it with whatever ink or color they want without cleaning it first. It’s possible to get away with this, especially if you’re using blue or black ink.

However, I think it makes sense to flush it out first because it doesn’t take much time.

Can You Use Waterproof Ink in a Fountain Pen?

Yes, you can use waterproof ink in a fountain pen, but you want to use one that’s made for use with fountain pens. Otherwise it may clog, cause flow issues, or even damage the pen . You’ll also need to use a converter that fits your brand of fountain pen.

I explain how to use waterproof ink in a converter later in this post.

How to Install a Cartridge in a Lamy Safari Fountain Pen

Installing a cartridge in a Lamy Safari is easy. Basically, you just take the cap off, remove the cardboard ring, install the cartridge, and then screw the cap back on. Give the ink time to flow into the nib and then you can start writing or drawing with it.

Below are the more detailed step-by-step instructions.

How to Fill a Converter With Drawing Ink

Filling a fountain pen converter with ink is pretty simple. You insert the converter into the pen, twist the end of it so the plunger is at the bottom. Then insert the nib of the pen into the bottle of ink and twist the plunger up to draw up the ink.

The more in-depth instructions are below. But first, you need to purchase a converter that works with your fountain pen.

Which Converter Works With a Lamy Safari Fountain Pen?

Some fountain pens can use a universal converter while other brands have a proprietary converter that only works with that brand. Lamy has a proprietary converter so make sure that you get the Z28 converter if you’re using the Lamy Safari.

If you’re using some other brand of fountain pen, you’ll want to do some research to make sure that you get a converter that fits it.

Step by Step Instructions for Filling a Converter With Ink

Below are the step by step photos and the instructions are in the captions. If something doesn’t make sense you can watch the YouTube video at the top of the post.

There’s not too much that can go wrong. One thing that might happen is that you dip the pen too far into the ink and you get ink on the handle. That’s okay, you can clean it off with a rag or paper towel.

Another issue is that sometimes it doesn’t draw up ink, or only just a little bit of ink.

If that happens, just repeat the procedure. While the nib is in the ink bottle, twist the plunger so that it’s all the way down, and then twist it in the opposite direction to make the plunger go up.

Sometimes it doesn’t fill up because you don’t have the nib deep enough in the ink bottle.

You want to dip the nib of the pen into the bottle so that the ink covers up about 75% of the nib. It’s really simple once you do it a couple of times, you won’t have to think about it after you get the hang of it.

Twist the barrel of the pen back on once there’s enough ink in the converter. It helps to wipe off the excess ink from the metal nib with a paper towel. Fold the towel so that when it soaks up the ink it doesn’t get on your hands like it did in my video.

The rest of the process is the same as using a cartridge. Put the cap back on and allow the ink to flow into the nib.

Drawing With a Fountain for Watercolor Sketches

In the video, I demonstrate how I use ink and watercolor for sketching in my sketchbook. Below is a photo of the sketch of a boat harbor that I drew with the Lamy Safari.

I normally sketch with an inexpensive mechanical pencil to layout the basic shapes. If the subject is simple I might start drawing with the pen. It’s up to you if you want to sketch with pencil first.

Once I’m happy with the drawing I will use a blowdryer to make sure the ink is dry. Thicker applications of ink may take longer to dry than thinner lines. Using a hairdryer to dry the ink ensures that there won’t be any surprises when you paint over it with watercolor.

It’s not fun to paint over a drawing and have the ink smear as you paint over it. Lighter colors like yellow are more affected by this than a darker color like Ultramarine Blue.

When I’m sketching outdoors I’ll just let the ink drawing dry naturally in the sun while I set up my watercolors. If you’re not sure it’s dry you can test out a section by brushing over a line with a small amount of water.

Which Paper Is Suitable for Ink and Watercolor?

Paper selection is an important consideration when you work with ink and watercolor. When I use a paper that I’ve never used before, I will take the time to test out the inks and watercolors that I plan on using on them to make sure that they work as I expect.

There are some papers that are more suitable for ink and watercolor than others. It might be the sizing on the paper, or perhaps the type of ink that you use, but some inks will lift and smear as you paint over them with watercolor, regardless of how long you let them dry for.

In the example painting, I’m using an Alpha series sketchbook from Stillman and Birn. Here’s the Alpha series on Amazon. This is the page for the Alpha series on Blick. It has a smooth surface and it’s suitable for thin washes of watercolor. The pages buckle a little bit, but I don’t mind it for sketching.

Final Thoughts

Using a fountain pen for drawing can be very satisfying. I like the fact that the nib doesn’t wear out like a felt tip pen does. Another disadvantage to felt tip pens is the lines get more ragged and lighter with use.

Being able to fill a converter with the type of ink that I prefer is another advantage that fountain pens have over other pens.

And I also feel like I’m not creating as much waste as I do when I buy disposable drawing pens.

Fountain pens seem to have the convenience of disposable pens and only require minimal maintenance. Give them a try and see what you think!

When ink won't flow: troubleshooting your fountain pen.

Damaged Nib

If the nib of your fountain pen is damaged, it may not write properly. If this is the case, you may need to replace the nib. Damaged nibs can be caused by dropping the pen, or by using it with too much force.

Ink Quality

Another factor is the quality and flow of the ink, if the ink flow is low, you may need to clean the pen or change the ink cartridge. If the ink flow is still low after doing so, you may need to try a different brand of ink or cartridge.

T here are two types of people in the world – those who think a pen is just a pen and those who know that a pen is an instrument of such power that they are fanatically particular about what they write with. In this round-up we’ve asked the same things of each pen: does it write smoothly, gliding across the page and releasing ink evenly? How does it feel to hold? Does the ink dry quickly? Does it bleed into the other side of the paper? What does it look like? Is it expensive? How long does it last?

How we tested

We used the same paper (85gsm) and wrote up to an A5 sheet’s worth with each pen. This, we felt, gave us ample opportunity to get to grips, literally, with what each pen offered. The tester was right-handed.

Papermate flair felt tips

Purists will probably be furious about the inclusion of felt tips in a story focused on handwriting, but there is definitely a case for this type of pen being a joy to write with. Especially these, which have thinner tips than most – these are 0.7mm which create bold but not chunky lines. Best of all, unlike most felt tips, these don’t bleed into the other side of the paper.

We didn’t realise that this fineliner is actually designed for use on glass, film and metal to work with projectors, but are happy to report that it works beautifully on paper too. Smooth, even, dense without bleeding either to the other side or outwards onto the page – we wrote neatly and easily with this. And there was no smudging to speak of, either.

Bic 4 colours shine ballpoint pen

This pen has been a pen lover’s staple since 1970 – and Bic still find ways of updating it while staying true to the elements that make it a design favourite. This still boasts four colours in one pen, each retractable, but the main body of the pen has a shimmering shiny sheen that rings the changes.

We think this is the perfect pen for note-taking, particularly for students who might need to colour code points or themes. In terms of writing, the nibs are each 1mm and write evenly with no smudging, but they are essentially simply biros so those hunting for the satisfaction of a deliciously smooth flow might be disappointed.

We don’t think you can beat the Pilot hi-tecpoint when it comes to precision, ink flow, price, neatness and just general satisfaction when it comes to both the act of writing and the end result. But we have to say the Poketo prisms are a gorgeous revelation and the Lamy fountain pen is something lovely to keep forever.
