How to spend Christmas Day in London

How to spend Christmas Day in London

Christmas Day in London is the only day of the year when London comes to a standstill: There is no public transport and most shops are closed.

Lots of people visit London during the Christmas holidays, and sometimes people feel disappointed when they discover that there isn’t much to do in London on Christmas Day, as nothing is open. It is the only holiday of the year that can be considered a real bank holiday for those who work in central London, as other bank holidays in London go unnoticed, as shops don’t close, and public transport is always on the go.

So one of the questions that I receive the most include: What do we do in London on Christmas Day? Is it a waste of time? How do spend Chrismas in London?

The truth is that London never really stops; even if it is Christmas Day and the shops are closed, there is always something to do. Yes, some restaurants will be open, and what’s more, they will be offering traditional Christmas Dinner. There will also be taxis (although they will be more expensive this day) and London’s buildings and skyline won’t be covered…  So don’t worry, there are things to do. We have made a list of the best things to do in London on Christmas Day.

What to do on Christmas Day in London

Few tourist attractions will be open on December 25 in London, but so that you can make the most of this day, I have compiled everything I have found that can be done on Christmas Day in London, including restaurants that offer traditional food British Christmas.

Christmas Day Sigthseeing Bus Tour

A special Christmas Day sightseeing bus tour will run on Christmas Day in London. We think this is a good way of spending part of the day, and it can be pretty spectacular. Just imagine – no crowds, no traffic… You will see London like never before, and it’s also a way to get around the city as there is no public transport.

Discover the sights of London on Christmas Day with a unique Christmas Day Sightseeing Tour. This tour will take you past London’s must-see sights while you hear festive facts and stories from a live guide.

The Christmas Day Bus Tour departs from Marble Arch at 10am, 12pm, 2:30pm and 5pm on December 25th only. Duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and it is not a hop-on hop-off tour.

You will need a specific ticket for this tour: Christmas Day Sightseeing Tour . This ticket is only valid for the 25th of December,

Christmas Day Tours from London

Where to Eat in London on Christmas Day

Even though many pubs and restaurants will be closed on Christmas Day in London, some will open and offer a traditional British Christmas Lunch. It is important to book, though, as you may want to book the restaurant closest to your hotel (or near a sightseeing bus tour stop!), knowing that no public transport will be available.

You can spend the morning strolling through central London or going on the sightseeing bus tour and then take the opportunity to enjoy Christmas Lunch, something that can only be done properly once a year!

Here is a list of restaurants in London that offer a special menu for Christmas Day:

More information and bookings on their website: Hornimman´s
  • The Lamb and Flag: Located in Covent Garden, this pub offers a traditional Christmas Day menu for £80 per person. Find out more: The Lamb and Flag .

  • Chop House: All three Chop House restaurants offer Christmas menus from £55 to £75 per person. One of them is located on Butler’s Wharf, overlooking Tower Bridge, another one is located next to St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the third restaurant is next to Moorgate. What closes on Christmas day in London

  • Winter Wonderland. Find out more: Winter wonderland .
  • All the ice-skating rinks. Find out more: Christmas in London .
  • Christmas Markets. Find out more: Christmas in London .
  • Virtually all shops and supermarkets.
  • All the museums, such as the Natural History Museum , the Science Museum , the British Museum …
  • All the attractions, such as London Eye, Tower of London, Madame Tussauds… except the Sightseeing Bus Tour as mentioned above.

Public Transport on Christmas Day in London

As I mentioned before, Christmas Day is the only day of the year when there is no public transport in London, and this can be a problem if you need to move around the city on that day. There will be no underground service, no bus, no overground, and no DLR amongst other services.

Taxis will be available throughout the day, but they will be more expensive on this day. If you already know that you will need to go from one place to another, such as from the airport to the city centre, I recommend booking a minicab in advance, since it will probably be cheaper than calling a taxi on the day.

National Express buses will operate on Christmas Day, making airport transfers easier.

  • Bus from Stansted Airport to Central London .
  • Bus from Gatwick Airport to Central London.
  • Bus from Luton Airport to Central London .

Christmas Eve and Boxing Day in London

Shops, tourist attractions and public transport also have different opening times during Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Here you can find what is open and what to do on these days: Christmas Eve and Boxing Day in London .

Christmas Day In London 2023 Guide: Fabulous Restaurants and Things to Do

Christmas Day In London 2023 Guide: Fabulous Restaurants and Things to Do

Love This? Save and Share!

Spending Christmas Day in the capital? Here’s how you can make the most of it.

Some people like to say that London goes to sleep on Christmas Day. We tend to think that depends on how you look at things. On the one hand, the quiet streets do have a sleepy feel to them (and we do love London when it’s this quiet), but on the other there are some truly wonderful restaurants and pubs open where you’ll find the mood abuzz.

It’s not all about eating and drinking at Christmas (or is it). London also boasts heaps of festive walks and opportunities for freezing swims or carol singing services in splendid cathedrals.

Here’s how we like to spend the big day in London…

Things to do on Christmas Day in London

Go for a wintery walk.

Hampstead

One of the most distinguishing features of Christmas Day in London is the fact that there is no public transport. Zilch. Nada. Some people see this as a pain – we tend to think it makes for a rather strange but refreshing change.

What can you do about it? Take a wintery walk instead. Boshing through quiet streets and off to somewhere green is what it’s all about for us.

London parks will be open so even if you’re not in central London there should be some green space nearby to enjoy a bracing festive walk. We’ve got a few favourite walks too. You can discover those here .

Hop on a Boris Bike

Boris Bike

With all the usual crowds tied up tucking into turkey and spuds, London’s roads empty out – it’s almost like a scene from a movie. What better time to go on a bike ride around the city? You’ll be king of the roads.

It’s the one day of the year where you can see the capital at its quietest. There will be some traffic though, so play it safe and do your cycling before reaching for the sherry.

Do an Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour of the Sights

There is in fact one bus that still runs, even on Christmas day. It’s the one run by Golden Tours . They do a Chritsmas day bus tour that whips you around the sites of London. You can hop on and off as you please and check out the city in all its festive glory.

London’s famous landmarks will be lit up with Christmas lights – the Tower of London , Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace , the Houses of Parliament , and you’ll have the bonus a live guide dishing out the London history as you go.

You can book it here

Go for an Outdoor Swim

Hampstead Ponds

If you’d rather plough through icy waters rather than a tin of Quality Street this Christmas Day, you’re in luck.

The Serpentine Swimming Club will run their famous 100-yard handicapped Peter Pan Cup in the Serpentine at Hyde Park (strictly for members only so you may have to watch from the sidelines).

There are plenty of other places for a dip should you be brave enough: Brockwell Lido is open until 11:10am, Hampton Pool is open too. Tooting Bec Lido , Parliament Hill Lido and Hampstead Heath Ponds are also open for business – but they all require booking.

Be sure to check their specific guidance on how to swim outdoors safely in winter. It could be very chilly indeed!

Hot chocolate (or a swig of whisky) can always come afterwards, of course.

Volunteer with a Charity

You could always take the moral of A Christmas Carol to heart and consider volunteering on Christmas Day (and perhaps throughout the year too).

London has plenty of options for both. Crisis is one of the biggest which operates a number of volunteering opportunities over the Christmas period.

Other places like the The Soup Kitchen , Ealing Soup Kitchen and Peckham Project are always looking for helping hands. Shelter from the Storm and The Salvation Army too. You’ll find all the information you need to get stuck in on their websites.

Go to Evensong at St. Paul’s

Inside St Pauls

One of the most popular places to go on Christmas Day is St Paul’s Cathedral.

The programme for December 25th is Holy Communion 8-8.30am, Morning Prayer 8.45-9am, Sung Eucharist ( carols for choir and congregation) 11-12.30pm and the famous choral service of Festal Evensong, sung by the St Paul’s Cathedral Choir 3-4pm.

Virtually all Advent and Christmas services are free and unticketed with seating allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Visit Chinatown

Chinatown

Not everyone wants a traditional Christmas lunch on the 25th. How about Chinese for a change? If you haven’t booked a restaurant, check out some of the eateries and cafes open in Chinatown .

We find them to be particularly if you need breakfast in London on Christmas Day.

Indulge in Festive Afternoon Tea

Because who needs an excuse to scoff cake and mince pie on Christmas Day, right?

We love afternoon tea . But afternoon tea surrounded by twinkling lights and frosted windows sounds even more magical. Top picks include The Savoy , The Ritz , and Corinthia London – this is truly one of the best things to do in London on Christmas day.

Board a Christmas Cruise

City Cruises

music.

Or, if you’ve already made dinner plans, the Christmas Day Sightseeing Cruise where you can scoff mince pies and sip mulled wine as you watch London roll by from the water wouldn’t be a bad way to celebrate.

Walk the Illuminated Streets of the Capital

London look downright incredible during the festive season. That’s largely because this city goes all out when it comes to Christmas lights. So here’s an idea: once you’ve let all that turkey and roast potato, oh and the sprouts, servings of Christmas pudding and that cheese board settle, head out into the city streets for an after-dark stroll.

The lights will no doubt give you the extra boost of Christmas spirit that’ll get you through the many rounds of board games to come. You might even burn off enough steam to have a second crack at that cheese board.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry at a Restaurant or Pub

Pubs

Not all pubs are open on the 25th but some will be open for Christmas lunch and/or a festive beverage. Hotel bars may also be open for drinks on a walk-in basis but do your research to find out what the options are for each venue.

Like the sound of eating out? There are many fabulous restaurants open on Christmas Day in London serving up some of the finest festive lunches. More on that next…

Eating Out on Christmas Day

Dalloway terrace.

Wondering where to go for Christmas dinner on Christmas Day in London? Known for its stunning festive decor, Dalloway Terrace is an excellent place to chow down on turkey.

At just £95 per person (yes – that includes a glass of bubbles, you booze fiend) for five courses, this is easily worth the splurge. And with turkey, venison, and halibut to choose from as well as veggie options throughout, the entire family is guaranteed to be kept happy.

Cinnamon Kitchen

City + Battersea

Cinammon Kitchen Christmas

Fancy and Indian twist on Christmas lunch? The Christmas Day 5-course menu at Cinnamon Kitchen boasts a wide choice of modern Indian dishes such as grilled partridge breast, tandoori spiced venison or saffron poached pear and garam masala Christmas pudding (£65pp).

Pont de la Tour

Shad Thames

Christmas Day restaurants don’t come much more festive than Pont de la Tour .

The 5-course menu includes roast turkey with all the best bits, house-cured cured salmon, and Christmas pudding ice cream, not forgetting the finale – coffee, minced pies and truffles (£130pp).

Spaniards Inn

The 5-course Christmas dinner at Spaniards Inn has a good choice of starters, mains and desserts (£91.50pp).

If not traditional turkey, salmon, beef wellington, root vegetable wellington and venison are also available as mains. A separate kids menu is available for Christmas Day.

Ham Yard Hotel

Celebrate the 25th in Soho with champagne, canapés and a 4-course menu at the stylish 5-star Ham Yard Hotel (£165pp).

There’s roast bronze turkey with all the trimmings and roast Delica pumpkin with winter greens and artichoke chips. Dessert, artisanal cheeses, coffee, tea and mince pies – the works.

Duck and Waffle

Enjoy your Christmas lunch surrounded by breathtaking views at the top of Salesforce Tower.

In addition to turkey, you might like to sample Duck and Waffle’s lobster cocktail, mulled wine poached pear and naughty hot chocolate, plus lots of other treats (£145pp / £65 kids under 10).

St James’s

The Ritz

Nothing quite says “Treat yourself, it’s Christmas!” like Xmas lunch at The Ritz.

Mind you, it would be quite the treat… At £600 a pop.

Still, if you’re willing to splurge on the ultimate festive experience, you won’t be disappointed. How does a six-course Michelin-starred menu, a full jazz band and a caricaturist to capture your festive likeness sound? Pretty epic, we think.

Whitcomb’s at The Londoner

Leicester Square

Whitcombs

For the ultimate Christmas Day dinner at Whitcomb’s is offering a decadent 5-course lunch for £195pp, with a glass of bubbles, of course.

The meal kicks off with an amuse-bouche of beetroot and balsamic tart, followed by an option of three entrées which includes a luxurious smoked-duck salad among other items.

Main dishes feature oven-roasted black cod and a seared beef fillet with caramelised apple that’s got our bellies rumbling.

Dessert brings a choice of the traditional in a good old Christmas pudding or things like a blackcurrant delice if you want to keep your Christmas dinner on the fancy side of things.

Sounds like an all-round indulgent affair, then…

Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester

Mayfair

If you really want to push the boat out (and we mean right far out), it’d probably be hard to top dinner at The Dorchester , specifically at The Dorchester’s three-Michelin star restaurant, Alain Ducasse.

Those three Michelin stars signify that the cooking here is some of the best in the world, not just London and the hotel itself is simply stunning – especially when they’ve got their decorations up.

For £450 per person, you can treat yourself to a Christmas dinner by one of the world’s greatest chefs and his team’s contemporary reimagining of the traditional Christmas dinner. The feast includes wine pairings and will no doubt be one to remember.

Sycamore Vino Cucina

Covent Garden

You can celebrate Christmas in the heart of London at Sycamore Vino Cucina, a lovely Italian restaurant at the luxury Middle Eight Hotel in Covent Garden.

They’ve got a feast menu lined up for the big day that begins with a glass of bubbly on arrival and runs five-course through a mix of the English flavours in dishes like thyme-roasted venison and wild mushroom risotto, to more out-and-out Italian favourites – yes that includes pasta and pizza.

THe Sycamore do take their cooking very seriously, so although you won’t be eating the traditional classics, you will be in very safe hands.

The Broadcaster

White City

Christmas is a special occasion and sometimes a special occasion requires a good view. Take the one at The Broadcaster for example. Perched atop the old broadcasting house in White City – once the home of the BBC, it’s a spot we love for knocking back drinks on a special occasion.

This Christmas The Broadcaster is staying open to serve up a killer Christmas dinner that features canapes of truffled cheese croquettes to begin, turkey, beef, fish and veggie options for the main course (with all the trimmings) and a spred of desserts that have got our mouths watering.

Sorry Christmas pub, we’re going for the chestnut and hazelnut fondant.

The Cadogan Arms

Cadogan arms pub

If you’re looking for something heart-warmingly traditional, we suggest The Cadogan Arms . This Chelsea boozer is a spot that we love to hit on a cold wintery day for its cosy vibes, so we’re certain they’ll be just the ticket for a Christmas dinner.

This year they’re serving up a traditional feast too. Turkey is in attendance, as is a beef wellington but if you want to make it a fancy festive season they’ve got a turbot with  Champagne and caviar sauce.

We can already feel the temptation, but is it right to abandon the traditional dinner when you only get to eat it once a year? The decision is eating us alive.

FAQs about Christmas Day In the Capital

For food shopping, a few independent corner shops may be open on the 25th, but not the big chain supermarkets. Best to assume everything is going to be closed and plan accordingly. Some restaurants and pubs are open for Christmas (as mentioned above) but you’ll almost certainly have to book a table for Christmas lunch. London attractions will be closed on the 25th but there’s still plenty to see if you’re in central (and weather permits).

You won’t be short of things to see and do if you’re in London for the festive period. Christmas lights, Covent Garden , unbeatable festive shows like the Nutcracker, Ice skating and of course top notch Christmas food at many of the restaurants and markets .

Our ideal itinerary would be a morning walk in one of the London parks or a jolly bike ride through the city. All followed by a long and leisurely festive lunch somewhere extra special (and possibly a nap straight after).

No. As we’ve mentioned, there will be zero public transport in London on the big day.

What to Do in London on Christmas Day 2023

What’s the saying? It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And that couldn’t be truer, especially when spent in London. The capital springs to life during this period; sparkly lights illuminate the streets, pubs start serving warm mulled wine, and pigs in blankets start cropping up on food menus – small sausages wrapped in a blanket of bacon – a seasonal snack enjoyed in Britain during the Christmas period. But come Christmas Day, things are different: the streets are empty, there are minimal cars on the roads, and everything is a lot quieter, which is actually very cool to see since London is usually choc-a-block.

So if you’re in London on Christmas Day, here’s what you need to know and what you can do on the day for some fun.

Some of the links below are affiliated which helps support all of the free content and advice we produce every day, at no extra cost to you. Thank you ❤️

Santander bikes or Boris bikes are the best way to get around London on Christmas Day

Does public transport run in London on Christmas Day?

It’s essential to note that the tube, trains and buses don’t run on Christmas Day, so we recommend walking as much as you can – the best way to enjoy a very quiet London that only happens once a year. Pop on your best walking shoes and just wander the streets, taking in the sights and sounds of a rare, quiet London. Top tip: if you go at night, you can enjoy the Christmas lights without all the other people.

Another great way to get about is to rent a bike or an e-scooter. Santander Bikes , Lime Bikes , Tier and Dott are the main companies that offer e-bike and e-scooter services around the city.

You can also take a taxi, you might just have to book in advance. If you’re coming from the airport, you can pre-book a taxi with our reliable partner .

Where to eat Christmas Dinner in London

Heading to church on Christmas Day is a tradition in some households, and many churches and cathedrals around London host services to commemorate the day. You can either check the timetable of a local church near your hotel and head along to whatever services they’re hosting, or you can go big by visiting an iconic London institution like St. Paul’s or Westminster Abbey.

St. Paul’s is hosting the principal service of Christmas Day, complete with carols for the Choir and congregation. Meanwhile, Westminster Abbey has two services, one In the morning to celebrate Christmas morning and one in the evening, consisting of choral music, scripture readings, and prayers. Although, you’ll have to book ahead if you want to attend either of these places on Christmas Day.

There’s also a service at St Martin’s in the Field in Trafalgar Square.

10 Things to Know Before Visiting London at Christmas / Why Visit London at Christmas

Best Things to do In London Christmas Itinerary

Best Things to do In London Christmas Itinerary

  • If you are visiting London in December then you are going to need to pack for the weather. The weather in London at any time of year is changeable but is especially so when visiting London at Christmas. You may have frost or rain in Londo n at Christmas. You make equally get a crisp sunny day. Make sure you pack plenty of layers and you’ll be fine.
  • If you are in London for Christmas Day be warned that there is no public transport on Christmas day and you may find things slowing down on Christmas Eve. If you plan to go out on Christmas Day be sure to pick restaurants etc somewhere close to where you are staying.
  • Restaurant reservations for Christmas Day and New Years Eve fill up early. If you want to eat out on these days be sure to make your reservations VERY early to avoid disappointment.
  • The main London attractions all close on Christmas day.

The Perfect Christmas London Itinerary (best things to do at Christmas in London)

This is my perfect Christmas London itinerary so if you want to visit at London at Christmas this itinerary will make sure you maximise your time for all the festivities in the city! The days listed in this Christmas in London itinerary can be done in any order and if you are more limited on time I would suggest just picking your favourite days to make the correct itinerary for you! This best things to do at Christmas in London itinerary will cover:

  • Best London Christmas Markets
  • Best London Winter Day Trips
  • Best London Christmas Lights and Ice Rinks

Please note : if you are spending Christmas Day in London there are restrictions in transport and opening hours which we will cover later in this article!

If you want to do Christmas things in London the I would recommend visiting London in December because although Christmas does start to kick off in London in November you are guaranteed more festivities in December.

This itinerary is designed with the idea that you have a whole four days in London however if you need to factor in transport time then choose which half day you are least interested in. For advice for getting from Heathrow Airport to London via public transport or for more London travel tips click on the links.

Day One of Christmas London Itinerary

visiting london at christmas itinerary

Start by having breakfast at Borough Market. This is a London foodie gem and is a great place to pick up some foodie treats especially if you are staying in self catered accommodation in London!  You’ll be able to pick up loads of festive and traditional English treats like mince pies, Christmas Pudding and more.

There are hundreds of stalls at this market so you are sure to find something for every taste and is especially great at Christmas.

As an added bonus film buffs will also recognize this as the location of Bridget Jone’s flat.

Top Tip : Be sure yo go there early as the crowds, especially at lunchtime can get big.

After you have fueled up, head out of the market and walk West! The walk along the Thames is beautiful and you will hit some more of London’s best known sights including

  • The Golden Hinde Replica –  a reconstruction of the ship that belonged to Sir Francis Drake! It is great that you can climb aboard and for London it isn’t too busy an attraction!
  • Clink Prison –  You can’t fail to notice the Clink as outside there is a large skeleton hanging in a cage! Not a museum in the most traditional sense and a bit gruesome (so not one for those traveling with small children). The museum offers a gruesome insight into some of the prisoners who had been held there.
  • Shakespeare’s Globe!  The Globe is a reconstruction of Shakespeare’s open air theatre and offers daily performances of Shakespeare.
  • Millenium Bridge

The next big icon on your walk will be the Tate Modern ! This industrial building is hard to miss on the London skyline! If you enjoy art and want  to escape the cold for a while be sure to head inside and check out some of the exhibits.

An added bonus of this walk is that from the Tate right down to the London eye there is Southbank Christmas Market! The stalls here line the riverside and have got great street food, and drink options.

To end the day you have two choices and both are among the most Christmassy things to do in London:

Firstly if you haven’t already had a chance to ice skate or perhaps you fancy this setting more try the skating rink opposite the London Eye and combine the attraction with a bit of skating. This is a very popular one so be warned it gets busy and I always recommend booking your London eye tickets in advance to save time queuing.

Pre booking tickets is a must to try and avoid the queue!

An alternative ice skating rink nearby is the famous skating at Somerset House which is combined well for your second option this evening which is to head to Covent Garden! For me Covent Garden is one of the most Christmassy places in the whole of London! The piazza and the market are filled with amazing Christmas decorations! Be sure to stop in Covent Garden for Dinner and go for a stroll around the piazza afterwards watching the street performers and seeing any Christmas special events.

Day One of the Perfect Christmas In London Itinerary

Start day at one of the museums in South Kensington. Museums are an essential part of any London itinerary and South Kensington is home to some of the b est museums in London and will have something for every cultural taste between the Science Museum, Natural History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum! For those travelling with toddlers or younger children I would opt for one of the first two museums while adults may prefer the V&A. But in my opinion all are worth a visit no matter your age. And on top of being some museums in the world they are also all free museum in London.

If you would like to find a London itinerary designed specifically for kids then check this post out.

Once you have finished your morning at the museums I would recommend making your way into one of the beautiful Mews roads of London and one of my favourite London pubs – The Queens Arms ! When I worked in South Kensington we would always hold our Christmas meals at this pub so it has to make my London Christmas itinerary.

This pub is always busy but especially so at Christmas so be sure to ring ahead and book your table in advance.

For your afternoon, head back towards the Natural History Museum and hit what is my personal favourite ice skating rink in London. But be warned the queues for this can get long but in my opinion it is worth the wait especially if you are going in late afternoon as the sun is going down and the Christmas lights are coming on. It is  a magical Festive London experience.

To end the day jump on the tube and head to Hyde Park to enjoy an evening in the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland! This is perhaps the most iconic of all the London Christmas Markets and is best experienced in the evening. However I would note that if our are travelling to London with small children they might enjoy this in the day more as it can get busy.

Day Three of the Perfect London Christmas Itinerary – The Best Day Trips to Take from London in December

For me no London itinerary no matter the time of year is complete without a day trip. There are so many awesome day trips that are accessible from London and the winter months are no exception. If you are looking for the best day trips to do from London in December and the lead up to Christmas our top picks are:

Harry Potter Studio Tour aka Hogwarts in the Snow

Best Winter Day Trips from London including Hogwarts in the Snow

This is a must for any Harry Potter fan no matter what time of year you are visiting London but Christmas is an extra special time and always makes all the top things to do in London at Christmas lists.

The Harry Potter Studio Tour from late November to early January is given a makeover and the subtitle Hogwarts in the Snow and the studio becomes even more magical than normal (if you can believe that – it’s already pretty magical).

For big Potter fans, you will notice that the decorations is reminiscent of my favourite of all the films in the franchise – the Goblet of Fire and the big Yule Ball!

They go all out with Christmas trees, fireplaces, feasts and even fake snow! It is one of the most Christmassy things to do in London! But be sure to book your tickets well in advance! It is always advisable to book your Harry Potter studio tour tickets in advance as it does sell out but this is even more true for the Hogwarts in the Snow period.

Alternative Best Day Trip from London in December / London in December itinerary

But if Harry potter isn’t your thing then there are still plenty of great day trips to take from London in December.

One of my favourite combinations is to head to West London for the day and do the combination of Hampton Court Palace, Richmond and Kew Gardens

One of my favourite day trips from London whether it be winter, spring summer or autumn is Hampton Court Palace. If you are staying in Central London then it is just a short train from Waterloo Station to get to Hampton Court Palace! For more details on how to take a day trip to Hampton Court from London click here.

The Palace has special Christmas events and have carolling, Christmas markets, and always a favourite part of the Palace for me is the kitchen which at Christmas will have live cooking demonstrations showing how Christmas dinner has changed over time.

Be sure to check on the Hampton Court Palace website before your visit to make sure what events are happening during your time in London! If you are there around early December you will want to try and catch the Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre.

Be sure to book your tickets online in advance HERE !

Hampton Court Palace also has one of the best ice skating rinks in London so if you haven’t had chance to do skating in the centre or perhaps you just want to try your hand at skating in this idyllic setting is a great place to do it.

christmas day travel london

Once you have finished at Hampton Court Palace hop on the bus to Richmond Town Centre! Richmond, my hometown is a quaint town on the river with great shops, pubs and cafes! It is a great a place to wile away your afternoon and also get a traditional pub dinner.

Our favourite places to have dinner in Richmond are

  • The White Swan – next to the site of the Old Richmond Palace! This pub does great food in an off the beaten track location and is often called a hidden gem of Richmond so shh I didn’t tell you about it!
  • The Marlborough – a great foodie pub on Richmond Hill
  • The Roebuck

If high end dining and Michelin stars are more your taste then you should check out

  • The Bingham
  • Petersham Nurseries

After dinner and to end your day spend the Evening at Kew Gardens Illuminated! We are season ticket holders at Kew Gardens and love to visit no matter the time of year but Kew Gardens illuminated is extra special.

The Christmas Evenings at Kew have been running for 7 years and are always a sight to behold! There are laser projections, beautiful lights, singing holly bushes,  a mini Christmas market and the amazing finale at the Palm House Pond.

Tickets for this event are timed so be sure to book your tickets well in advance to be sure to get your desired time slot.

Leeds Castle - one of the best things to do in london at christmas - best Winter Day trips from London

Leeds Castle – one of the best things to do in london at christmas – best Winter Day trips from London

If you want to go a bit further afield for your day trip then I would recommend visiting Leeds Castle, Kent at Christmas! This is often called the loveliest castle int eh world and it is extra lovely at Christmas.

Day Four of the Perfect Christmas In London Itinerary

If you are looking for what to do in London at Christmas the you have to put some Christmas shopping on your list. Start your morning by indulging in some Christmas shopping along the famous Oxford and Regents Street! Some of the best and busiest shopping streets in the UK! But do be sure to return to Oxford and Regents Street in the evening to see some of the most impressive Christmas lights in London.

You will also want to make sure you hit some of London’s most famous department stores as these have some of the best Christmas displays in the city. The must visit department stores in London are

  • Liberty’s
  • Fortnum and Masons and of course
  • Harrods

Harrods in my opinion usually has the best window displays but my favourite place to pick up bits is Fortnum and Mason’s as they specialise in food! It is also a great place to get some presents (English Breakfast Teas, fudge, and other English staples) to take back home after your trip and is one of the best things to do in London over Christmas.

And for your afternoon sit down and indulge in a traditional Afternoon tea. My favourite traditional afternoon tea in London is at the Ritz and in my opinion is  a must for any London bucket list.   Christmas is a great time to visit the Ritz for afternoon tea as the palm court is transformed into an Edwardian winter wonderland and is the perfect traditional Christmas afternoon tea.

But if you don’t fancy this or can’t make a reservation these hotels also offer great festive afternoon teas

  • One Aldwych
  • The Savoy

For your evening, I would recommend taking in the grand British tradition of the Christmas Pantomime. The English Pantomime is a hard things to explain but basically it takes a traditional tale – Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Aladdin etc hams them up and add a cross dressing dame with some musical numbers and minor UK celebrities. It really is a must for the UK Bucket List! I am particularly fond of the British pantomime given I grew up as a pantomime babe.

The most well regarded pantomime in the UK is the Wimbledon theatre one but you will enjoy it wherever you get tickets for.

However if you don’t fancy it then other Christmas Shows you could consider are:

  • The Nutcracker at the London Coliseum by the English Royal Ballet!
  • The Snowman – a classic British Christmas tale
  • Christmas at the Royal Albert Hall – a series of Christmas shows that run throughout December.

I would advise booking your tickets in advance!

Day 5 of your What to do in London At Christmas Itinerary

Another London institution that you must see in London is going to Buckingham Palace to watch the Changing of the Guard. This will need checking before you go as the Changing of the Guard, despite popular opinoin does not happen every day.

Best Place to Watch the Changing of the Guard with kids or without - Wellington Barracks

Check the Changing of the Guard website and plan this in advance! Although the Changing starts at 11 I would recommend getting there at 10:30! You can find more of our tips for the Changing of the Guard here!

One the Guard has changed be sure to head for a stroll around St James Park and see the beautiful Pelicans! I love strolling around the parks of London at Christmas and this is one of my favourites.

After that I would recommend spending the rest of the afternoon sightseeing some of London’s most famous sites such as

  • Horse Guards
  • Big Ben
  • Wesminster Abbey

Before ending your day in Trafalgar Square to see my favourite Christmas tree in all of London.

For your evening you are going to do one of my favourite Christmas things to do in London (providing your dates fit of course). St Martin in the Fields offers some of my favourite Christmas Carols in all of London! If you are lucky to be in London when this is occurring I would strongly recommend adding this to your itinerary. However if not I would use this time to fit in another show. To check when the carols service are please check the St Martins in the Fields website.

Best things to do in London on Christmas Day / Best Christmas things to do in London

Now if you are staying in London on Christmas day you might be wondering what are the best things to do in London on Christmas day. Well  spending Christmas day in London for tourists can be a bit of an oddity as Christmas is the one day in the London calendar that you will find deserted streets and calm.

London on Christmas Day largely comes to a stand still with public transport not running. Taxis are probably your best option for travelling around London on Christmas Day.

There is not much to do in on Christmas day in London for tourists in terms of London attractions however don’t worry there are still things to do in London on Christmas Day. So are our the top things to do in London on Christmas Day.

Peter Pan Race

An alternative however is to head to the Serpentine inHyde Park and watch the annual Peter Pan Race! The race has been run (swam!) since 1864.

Have Christmas Lunch

One of the things to do on Christmas day in London is of course have a traditional Christmas dinner. Though not many places are open on Christmas day there are plenty of places that you can grab a proper Christmas lunch but be warned this book up early so you need to be organised for this.

Where to stay in London for Christmas

If you are staying in London for the Christmas Period, I would recommend splashing out for a nice hotel if you can as they go all out on their Christmas decorations!

Aldwych one

I love this hotel especially its pool with the underwater music! It also has a great Charlie and the chocolate factory themed afternoon tea!

Public Transport in London over Christmas and New Year

Here’s a handy guide to service disruptions and reduced transport timetables in London across the festive season

© Sung Kuk Kim

Isabelle Aron

Travelling at Christmas is NOT easy. The festive period always needs that bit of extra planning in London, especially as you’ve got to see one grandma in Essex and another in Yorkshire before the New Year. So we’ve made it easy for you. Here’s what  TfL , the Underground, buses, trams, trains and the Overground are up to this Christmas and New Year.

Is public transport running in London over Christmas?

The answer is sort of yes and no. Between Friday December 22 and Tuesday January 2, there’s planned work, closures and service changes on the network, so make sure you check before you travel.

On Christmas Eve, for example (December 24 falls on a Sunday this year), services will finish earlier than normal across the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, Elizabeth line, London Overground and London trams. This normally means things close around 9pm, but it tends to start being a reduced service from around 7pm. There are also no night bus services on Christmas Eve, so don’t stay in the pub too long and get caught out in the (possibly) rain.

When are the train strikes over the Christmas period?

There haven’t been any announcements about planned strike action on the network over the Christmas period... yet. But, if the past year is anything to go by keep your eyes peeled and be prepared for your travel plans to change. Check back for updates.

Is public transport running on Christmas Day?

Everything  stops running on Christmas Day: the tube, buses, TfL Rail, DLR, Overground, trams, river buses, the cable cars and National Rail. The only transport available will be taxis, private hires and Dial-a-Ride. But you can still grab a Santander bike or an electric scooter in the boroughs that have them.

If you’re driving, note that the Ultra Low Emission Zone won’t operate on Christmas Day, and the Congestion Charge won’t operate from Christmas Day to January 2.

Are trains, tubes and buses running on Boxing Day?

Tube services resume on Boxing Day, but a chunk of it will still be closed. Buses will also start running from about 5.30am (so you can hit up those Boxing Day sales). The tube and Overground should open at 7am, but parts of the Elizabeth line will be shut that day along with parts of the Overground, so definitely check before you travel.

Most trains are not running on Boxing Day, with only a select number of airport transfer train services running, like the Stansted Express and Heathrow Express. Network Rail also uses the Christmas period to carry out a lot of its engineering works, so make sure you check back for any announcements.

Here’s the full list of London bus timetable changes for Christmas 2023, including Boxing Day .

What services are running on New Year’s Eve?

Last year, TfL ran the Night Tube on New Year’s Eve, so that partiers all over the city could get home safe (but you couldn’t beep in for free like previous years, sad face). We’re hoping it’s going to be the same this year, so check back for updates.

Keep in the know with TfL’s updates here .

Lady’s 7 Best Christmas Day Trips from London

Today I want to share about the best Christmas day trips from London. From cities and towns with famous Christmas markets to medieval castles with Christmas-themed events and activities, there are a lot of great winter day trips from London you can take during the festive season. Whether you love snowy chalets selling handmade gifts or an outdoor winter wonderland, there’s something for you.

Best Christmas Day Trips from London

Best Christmas Day Trips from London

The best Christmas day trips from London range from urban centers to towns and places in the countryside. Some are home to famous British Christmas markets , while others are known for British Christmas food or festive seasonal events.

Whatever your interests, these winter day trips from London are sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Market in York, one of the best Christmas day trips from London

1. York Christmas Day Trip

York tops my list of the best Christmas day trips from London. This city in the north of England is famous for its markets, of which there are many dotted throughout the center.

I once took a York day trip to discover the top York Christmas markets , and I was impressed by the size and variety of the city’s offerings.

Beyond markets, York’s shops and restaurants are full of Christmas cheer. From decorations on facades to special foods and drinks like mince pies and mulled wine, there’s a lot to get excited about here.

The city is also home to Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland, an annual winter experience featuring the north of England’s largest outdoor ice skating rink, a vintage funfair, a Santa’s Grotto, and an alpine cafe. It’s a great place to get into the Yuletide spirit.

York Christmas Market

2. Bath Christmas Day Trip

Bath is next on my list of the best Christmas day trips from London. The city is stunning at any time of year, but it really comes alive with markets and magic during the festive season. A Bath day trip is a great way to take it all in.

Bath has a lot of unique events and markets on offer during the season.

There’s an independent Bath artisan market in Queen Square, traditional Christmas celebrations around the Abbey Quarter, and an illumination trail of the city’s iconic heritage buildings.

Bath Christmas Market

There are also festive market stalls in Kingston Parade and Abbey Green, a Victorian carousel outside the Roman Baths, and lots of street performances and carol singing. Most years there’s a big Christmas market in the city center, too.

Additionally, many of the best independent shops in Bath go all-out for Christmas. From outdoor lights adorning the streets to twinkling ones inside the stores, the decorations are top-notch.

The seasonal goods on offer in the shops make perfect Christmas gifts for family, friends, colleagues, and other important people in your life, too.

Bath Abbey

3. Birmingham Christmas Day Trip

Next on my list of the best Christmas day trips from London is Birmingham . One of the best cities in England , this Midlands powerhouse is packed with Christmas markets and other festive fun throughout the Yuletide season.

I once took a day trip to visit the Birmingham Christmas markets and I loved everything from the gift-laden chalets to the sizzling sausages and other seasonal fare on offer.

From the lights on New Street to the carols in Victoria Square, there’s always a lot going on.

For ice skaters, the Ice Skate Birmingham rink in Centenary Square is a great place to glide through the winter air. The views of it from the contemporary Library of Birmingham are great, too.

Snowman and Reindeer at the Birmingham Christmas Markets

4. Canterbury Christmas Day Trip

Canterbury is another of the best Christmas day trips from London. This city in Kent is known for being home to Canterbury Cathedral, which is one of the most important churches in the UK.

It puts on everything from the Cathedral Carol Service to the Christmas Eve Choral Evensong with Carols and the Christmas Day Sung Eucharist with the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Outside the cathedral, a day trip to Canterbury is a great way to take in the the city’s Christmas festivities.

The Canterbury Christmas market in Whitefriars Shopping Centre and St George’s St features festive chalets rife with gifts and seasonal food and drinks. There’s also a Visit Santa experience for children and a Santa Paws experience for dogs.

Add to that live music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon during the season, and there’s a lot to love about a Christmas day trip from London to Canterbury.

Canterbury Cathedral, England

5. Windsor Castle Christmas Day Trip

Windsor Castle is next on my list of the best Christmas day trips from London. One of the most famous castles near London , it’s not only a great place to get into all things royal, but also a fun place to immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit.

That’s because Windsor Castle has beautiful Christmas decorations. From the special exhibitions to the festive garlands and twinkling lights throughout the halls, it’s magnificent to see.

The piece de resistance is the huge Christmas tree in St George’s Hall. It’s decorated with beautiful ornaments and lights.

There are other Christmas trees dotted throughout the State Rooms, including the Semi-State Rooms, which are only open to visitors in the winter.

There are also special events on at Windsor Castle during the Christmas season.

From themed activities around the castle to arts and crafts workshops and festive storytelling in the State Apartments, there’s something for everyone to enjoy on a Christmas day trip to Windsor Castle .

Windsor Castle, England

6. Exeter Christmas Day Trip

Exeter is another of the best Christmas day trips from London. Down in Devon, this cathedral city in the UK comes alive with seasonal festivities in the winter.

One of the best is the Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market on Cathedral Green. It features a labyrinth of winding lanes lined with chalets packed with handmade gifts, Christmas foods and drinks, and seasonal decorations. There’s live entertainment, too.

Exeter Cathedral itself does a lot as well. It hosts carol services, concerts, events, and tours throughout the run-up to Christmas.

Elsewhere in the city, there are twinkling lights, festive decorations, and Christmas trees in Princesshay and Roman Walk. Shops and restaurants are decked out in seasonal decor, and there are pop-up markets and bars throughout the city center.

Christmas Market in Exeter

7. Hever Castle Christmas Day Trip

Last on my list of the best Christmas day trips from London is Hever Castle . This moated beauty in Kent dives deep into the Christmas spirit each year, offering visitors a range of festive activities to choose from.

Hever Castle has a themed Christmas Trail visitors can follow, a festive fairground with rides, Christmas gifts and food in the shops and restaurants, a Santa’s Grotto, and a magical Christmas Light Trail experience around the gardens and lake.

Inside the castle, there are traditionally decorated rooms, warm log fires, and bright Christmas trees galore. They bring the interiors alive with festive atmosphere and eye-catching surprises.

Hever Castle Courtyard

I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of Christmas day trips from London and that it’s inspired you to get out and discover some of the best places to visit in the UK in winter . I’m sure they’ll help you get into the seasonal spirit as much as they’ve helped me.

If you want to travel further afield, the Scotland has a lot of great options as well. There are plenty of fun things to do in Edinburgh at Christmas , and cities like Glasgow and Inverness have markets and more. Happy travels!

What’s Open on Christmas Day in London? Your Free Festive Guide

christmas day travel london

While most people are cozied up inside their house on Christmas morning, surrounded by presents under the tree, some prefer to spend Christmas travelling. Whether this is because you don’t celebrate Christmas or are just looking to take advantage of the extra vacation day,  London  is a popular destination for Christmas travellers. London truly puts on a show, wrapping itself in strings of twinkling lights, millions of yards of ribbons and some of the best Christmas food in the world! But the big question is, what’s open on Christmas Day in London? Even in a bustling metropolis like London, most of the city shuts down. But don’t worry, there are still a few extraordinary ways to entertain yourself on Christmas in London.

christmas day travel london

Whether you’re a visitor far from home or a Londoner seeking a bit of holiday magic, join us as we explore what’s open in this magnificent city on the merriest day of the year. TIP: Public Transport is Closed on Christmas Day

Before you start planning your Christmas morning adventures, a word of caution:  there is no public transportation in London on Christmas Day.  This includes buses, trams, London Underground and London Overground trains. Ubers are available but are priced at a premium due to the reduced number of cars and high demand. You might be able to hire a taxi, but they are very few and far between to find on the street. This means you’ll need to walk to your destination unless you have a car. London is a very walkable city, but just be sure to keep this in mind when thinking about your day. If you must be at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 9 a.m. and stay in Kensington, be prepared to leave the house at 7 a.m.

Consider Renting a Bike

Another option for transport on Christmas Day is to rent a bike. Santander Cycles is London’s official hire bike service, with over 800 docking stations and 12,000 bikes around London. Each ride costs £1.65 to undock your bike, and you can ride for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, you’ll be charged an extra £1.65 for each additional half hour. There are also e-bikes available in select stations. They cost £3.30 for 30 minutes. After you ride, you must return the bike to a docking station. Maps of the docking stations can be found on the app and onlin e .

You can take out a bike using your bank card at the docking stations or download the Santander Cycles app. I prefer the app only because it’s often easier to use with foreign credit cards than the machine.

Because the roads are often less busy on Christmas Day, it makes it a little less intimidating to use as a first-time user. London has many dedicated bike lanes for you to use; check out this map to find the best route for your Christmas Day adventures!

Take a Guided Christmas Walking Tour

One of the best ways to experience Christmas Day in London is by taking a Walking Tour . If you prefer a Guided experience, London Walks has two specialty tours that only run on Christmas. The first is the Christmas Day Charles Dickens Walk . This tour leads guests on a tour of London inspired by the life and works of Charles Dickens. Being the “man who invented Christmas,” it seems very fitting to spend the afternoon walking in his footsteps. You will be able to discover Victorian hideaways unchanged since Dicken’s day.

The other tour by London Walks takes visitors back to Christmas 1660 in the footsteps of London’s greatest diarist, Samuel Pepys. Between 1652 and 1660, Christmas, but after the death of Cromwell, Christmas was back in full swing! What a time to look back at one of the greatest Christmases in London’s history.

Explore Any Borough on a Self-Guided Walking Tour

If you prefer to take a self-guided tour, you can explore any neighbourhood around London with many available guides online. This is a wonderful way to spend a quiet morning or afternoon with friends. Discovering hidden parts of the city on one of the quietest days in the calendar year. A British tradition for many Londoners is to take a Christmas walk, so it feels very in the spirit of the holidays to participate!

See All the Christmas Lights

While the stores all might be shut, the  Christmas Lights  around London stay on! And the light displays in this city are some of the very best productions you’ll find anywhere in the world. So head out armed with a cozy Christmas sweater, an oversized scarf and hot thermos of tea to explore different neighbourhoods around the city to soak up all that glittering festive Christmas atmosphere.

Attend a Chrismas Morning Church Service

Whether you are religious or not, attending a  Chrismas Morning Church Service   is a very special and unique experience. And one that I always recommend. If attending church triggers you or makes you uncomfortable, skip it . But I found that tourists (so long as they were respectful and didn’t just stand there taking pictures) were more than welcome in church on Christmas Morning.

Christmas Morning services are three of London’s most famous churches: St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and St Martin’s-in-the-Fields . I recommend attending the Parish Carol Service or Festal Evensong as the choirs at all these churches are some of the best in Britain. Hearing them sing in these historic buildings is truly an ethereal experience.

Be sure to check their website for the exact times of each service on Christmas Day. And be prepared to arrive at least an hour in advance to line up (or queue up as they say in London) to ensure you get a spot inside as this is, after all, one of the most popular days for families to all attend church together.

Enjoy a Very Special Christmas Afternoon Tea

Select hotels and tea rooms around London offer up Christmas Day Afternoon Tea. These reservations get booked up months in advance! Make your booking as early as possible to avoid disappointment. If you find reservations are booked up, consider going in person and asking if they can add you to their waitlist. Christmas (or winter in general) is when lots of people get sick and need to cancel at the last minute, so you never know when you might get called in at the last minute!

Christmas Day Afternoon Tea at the Ruben’s

My favourite place to go for  Christmas Day Afternoon Tea  is the  Ruben’s at the Palace . Their  Christmas Day Afternoon Tea  is specially curated by their executive pastry chef,  Sarah Houghting , who was a finalist in the 2021  Bake Off: The Professionals.  The three-course menu features a scrumptious feast of cakes, pastries, and seasonal flavours that pay tribute to the long-standing English tradition of Afternoon Tea. You’ll be greeted with a glass of mulled wine or a glass of Champagne. Set against the tranquil backdrop of live piano music, playing all your Christmas favourites feels like the perfect way to spend Christmas Day in London!

Christmas Day Prices: £105 per adult, including a glass of champagne; £55 for children under 12.

Alternative options for Christmas Afternoon Tea can also be found at the Hotel Cafe Royal .

Take a Walk in the Park

Because it usually doesn’t get below zero on Christmas Day, a brisk walk in one of London’s many historic parks is a great way to get outside and explore London’s green space. While the trees may be bare, I was surprised to find many gardens still beautifully manicured and a lovely place to stroll. My favourite park is Kensington Gardens, and their Italian Gardens are a picturesque and serene oasis. You can admire the stunning ornamental water garden with classical sculptures, urns, and a reflecting pond. Even in the winter, you can spot waterfowl, making it a peaceful place for birdwatching.

Watch the Peter Pan Cup

Every year, at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day, members of the Serpentine Swimming Club leave their home’s cozy comfort to participate in one of London’s strangest (and chilliest) traditions. They meet at the Serpentine Lido (open-air swimming pool) in Hyde Park to jump into the waters for a 100-yard swim. The traditions have been going on since 1864, and the race winner gets to take home the coveted Peter Pan Cup. Swimming usually gets into the Christmas spirit by donning silly Christmas hats and sant beards to pair with their swimming trunks. Watching this event is so much fun, as long as you do not have to get into that cold water!

Take a Boat Ride on the Thames

Sights along the  Thames River  are a constant, and even when the city is closed, their iconic imagery along the water doesn’t change. City Exp e riences London runs a 1-hour River Cruise along the Thames on Christmas Day. Visitors can enjoy informative and entertaining commentary all about the historic riverside as they glide along. While it might be chilly on deck, the interior of the boars is heated for your comfort. But I recommend grabbing a hot mulled wine and mince pie to eat on deck to soak in the views.

Luxury Christmas Day Meals

Many of London’s premier hotels have specialty Christmas Day menus on offer. These reservations are booked far in advance but cost a pretty penny. Be prepared to spend a hefty sum, but the food quality and overall experience are unmatched. These hotels often cater to guests staying for the Christmas holidays, so they want them to feel like this is a meal made with love, just like they would get at home. But with a refined level of excellence and service.

Causal Dining on Christmas Day

If you don’t want to spend a mint, there are various other options for more casual dining.  Cinnamon Club  is a fantastic Indian restaurant in Westminster that is always popular with Christmas day crowds.  Duck and Waffle  in Spitalfields is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even on Christmas Day! Perched in the clouds on the 40th floor of 110 Bishopsgate, this is also one of the best restaurants with stunning views across the city.  Tayyabs  is my favourite place in Whitechapel for incredible Indian food, open on Christmas day.

Pubs Open on Christmas Day

Wetherspoon is a chain of pubs across the UK, and many of their locations in London are open on Christmas Day. Call or check online for your local Wetherspoon’s to see if they will be available. They are an excellent choice for families as their extensive menu means everyone can find something to enjoy.

Fuller’s Pubs has beautiful pubs all across southern England, and at Christmas, four of their London locations remain open for a gorgeous Christmas Roast Meal. The Lamb & Flag in Covent Garden, The Sanctuary House Hotel in Westminster, The Star Tavern in Belgravia and The Swan in Hyde Park. A three-course meal on Christmas day is still £95, but you can always opt for the a-la-carte menu for something less expensive. Be sure to book in advance, if possible, to ensure yourself a spot!

Explore Chinatown

As is the case in many cities around the world, Chinatown is a popular destination on Christmas Day for those looking for something delicious to eat. London’s Chinatown has over 100 restaurants in only five square blocks, many of which remain open on Christmas Day. Rather than turkey, mince pies and mulled wine, you can get roast pork buns, sweet bean pastries and bubble tea here in Chinatown!

The Best Time to Book a Flight for Domestic, International, and Summer Travel

Here are our best tips for booking travel in 2024.

christmas day travel london

When to Book Flights for Domestic Travel

When to book flights for international travel, when to book flights for summer 2024 travel, when to book flights for holiday 2024 travel.

Buying plane tickets is something of an art form. Ideally, you want to secure your spot months in advance to avoid the inevitable price spike as your travel dates get closer. But sometimes the best time to book a flight also depends on the destination and whether it's domestic or abroad. The trends are always changing, but experts say the sweet spot for booking domestic flights is 28 days, or 60 days for international flights.

Flights generally open for booking about a year ahead of time, and the airfare will change often between then and takeoff. Although you can book just a couple of weeks before the departure date in some cases, prices are likely to be astronomical. In other cases, when you want to go somewhere popular or during a big travel weekend, flights could fill up faster than normal. Our advice: Track flight prices on Google Flights or Hopper as early as possible so you can keep an eye on cost fluctuations. Read on for more advice about when to book flights from the pros.

According to Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks report , you should aim to book 28 days before your domestic flight. "Doing so can save travelers up to 24 percent compared to those who wait until the last minute, from zero to six days out," Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson tells Travel + Leisure.

For domestic trips, pricing is elevated when tickets are first released, about a year before the flight. Those prices will slowly creep downward, all the way to their lowest point in the prime booking window, after which you'll likely see a huge increase in cost for last-minute travel.

Meet the Expert

Christie Hudson is a travel expert at top booking site Expedia.

You're better off booking earlier rather than later for international travel, but the Expedia report says ideally no more than four months before your desired departure date. The sweet spot is around 60 days. "This is a big change from 2022 data, which showed the cheapest fares were secured when travelers booked four to six months out." Hudson says. "2023 data revealed that people who booked that far in advance actually paid more on average." The report says the least expensive day of the week to book is Sunday and the most expensive is Friday, for both domestic and international travel.

But there is some regional variance. Going , a platform that tracks flight prices and notifies members of good deals, has found the best months to book flights to Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, for travel about 60 days out. Here's what it says.

Africa: Book in May.

Asia: Book in August or October, followed by April or September.

Oceania: Book in November, January, or July.

Europe: Book in August, October, or November.

Latin America: Book in October.

The real trick to finding good deals on international airfare is to avoid booking your travel for peak times, which include summer and major holidays (don't forget — that includes holidays in your destination, too).

Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to travel, which means it can be tough to find a good deal on airfare. Ideally, you should book flights for summer travel as soon as possible, preferably at least six months in advance.

"The best time to book for peak season is … the opposite season," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going. "While most of us are scrambling to focus on our winter holiday plans, we should also keep our eyes open for some great summer fares."

She notes that the booking window for peak season ranges between three and seven months for domestic flights and four to 10 months for international trips. "And if you do book something, keep that flight alert on," says Nastro. "If it drops again, depending on your ticket type, you can call to rebook and get a refund or travel credit back with the difference."

Katy Nastro is a travel expert at Going, a website that finds flight deals to more than 900 destinations around the world.

Around the winter holidays is the priciest time to travel, Nastro says. "Your best bet is to remember the Goldilocks zones: look to book between three to seven months ahead for domestic travel and four to 10 months ahead for international travel."

Hudson advises that at the very latest, your holiday travel should be booked by mid-October. "But the biggest holiday travel savings actually come from choosing the right dates," she says. "Avoiding the busiest days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday and Saturday before Christmas will yield major savings."

Track flights and book your holiday tickets as soon as you find a decent deal, but make sure to book a fare that will give you a credit if you cancel (generally speaking, that means don't book basic economy). That way, if prices drop between the time of booking and your travel dates, you can cancel your original ticket and use the credit to book the cheaper fare. The only downside is you'll still have some remaining credit, but you can then use it to treat yourself to a future flight. Just don't let that credit expire.
