Island Safari Lodge: Our View

For a comfortable budget friendly accommodation option in Maun, Island Safari Lodge is well worth considering.

The lodge is one of the original Maun properties developed for tourism and is set on a large 300 acre wooded lot giving guests an out-of-town atmosphere, whilst only being 10km away from Maun airport in town.

Situated under large riverine trees, on the banks of the Thamalakane River, the lodge offers a large campsite, 2 swimming pools, 12 chalets, 6 off river rooms and 6 family rooms, a children’s play ground, and a full bar and restaurant on site. The rooms all have showers en suite as well as DSTV and air conditioning. 

Island Safari Lodge also conveniently operates their own mokoro excursions, mobile safaris, and motorboat safaris in times of high water.  Day trips, and multi day safaris are available on all options. They also offer walking trails on the property, and when there is water in the Thamalakane River, short local mokoro rides and sunset boat cruises may be enjoyed.  These safaris are highly recommended and we have many guests who have raved about their experiences with Island Safari, including the quality of the guiding and their first rate vehicles and equipment.

The large river-front paved patio lends a cafe-style to the leisure area for alfresco entertainment on hot summer nights. Nostalgic bar and restaurant patrons should be in high spirits knowing that the popular climbing pole still stands tall in the pub,

while first time visitors can look forward to the adventure that lies ahead as well as the much sought after trophy rewarded to those who make it to the top and back down again in one piece.

The restaurant features a diverse a la carte menu with memorable meals including the 'elephant's leg' lamb shank and the 'not for the faint hearted' Island Burger.To beat the heat, the lodge offers a choice of two swimming pools: the smaller of the two temptingly close to the bar and the larger one situated near the campsite.

Island Safari Lodge and campsite, established in 1973, is situated just 12km North of Maun Airport along the Thamalakane River. With newly refurbished comfortable and affordable accommodation and a well equipped camping site,

Island is the perfect place to launch your attack on Botswana's Wilderness Areas.

The shadows surrender to the sun, rising, it stretches wide over the banks of the Thamalakane River.

In no hurry, dawn breaks, waking a multitude of birds, an extended family of squirrels and a bunch of cheeky monkeys - And with that the tranquil, laid-back atmosphere is set for the day. What else would you expect from Island Safari Lodge?

Despite being over 30 years old, Island Safari Lodge is still offers comfortable, basic and spacious rooms. Guests are accommodated in 12 thatched chalets or in 6 standard rooms. All accommodation is en-suite and equipped with air-conditioning and DSTV. The rooms are simply decorated with furniture made from wood sourced in the area surrounding Maun.

The en-suite standard rooms are adjoining and are therefore very popular with families exploring the Okavango Delta and other regions of Botswana. All rooms and chalets provide free wifi. People can tend to forget how isolated the lodge is even though this is the very thing that brings them to Botswana in the first place.

Island Safari Lodge also offers shady campsites, with shared ablution facilities, a braai area as well as power points. Campsites are not grassed, but regular travelers to Botswana will know that few, if any, campsites in Botswana are grass covered.

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

Not to worry though, the trail is not nearly as ominous as its name. Hickory Run was established as a state park in 1945 following a long and storied history of devastation and restoration. The first settlements in the area occurred following the American Revolution, when landowners began building mills on the local creeks. By the mid-1800s, the area was clearcut, then experienced several incidents of fire and flooding. In 1935 the area was purchased by the National Park Service (NPS) for use as a recreation area, and many of the roads, campgrounds and trails were developed. Ten years later, the NPS transferred the land to the state of Pennsylvania for use as a state park.

Just 30 miles south of Scranton, Hickory Run State Park is a 16,000-acre natural area in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. The area features numerous trout streams, boulder fields, wetlands and restored forests. The area is also home to a variety of wildlife, from birds to black bears. The park’s large campground features more than 300 tent, trailer and RV sites, as well as a few walk-in sites and camping cottages. Some campsites are ADA accessible. Park facilities include restrooms with showers, drinking water, two playgrounds, amphitheater, fishing pier, dog-walking area, and a camp store. There’s also recycling and dump stations. The Shades of Death and Beach trails are accessible right from the campground. Campsite rates range from $15–$40/night; cabins and cottages range from $38–$105/night.

On warm days, cool off with a dip in Sand Spring Lake, or go wading below Hawk Falls; cast a line for brook and brown trout in Hickory Run or Mud Run; or test your precision at the park’s disc golf course. Ricketts Glen State Park Campground

Boasting 22 named waterfalls amid old-growth forest and deeply-incised canyons, Rickett’s Glen State Park encompasses more than 13,000 acres around a high bluff known as the Allegheny Front. On top of the bluff, several lakes—Lake Jean being the largest—are the source of the many creeks that tumble down the canyons and create the spectacular falls. The area was mostly logged out in the early 1900s by the landowner, R. Bruce Ricketts, before he decided to preserve the woodlands in the falls’ three glens. Following efforts to turn the area into a national park in the 1930s failed, he began selling the land to the state of Pennsylvania, who turned the area into a state park in 1944. The park is now a year-round destination for camping, hiking, fishing, bird-watching, paddling, skiing and ice climbing.

Just an hour’s drive west of Scranton, the campground at Rickett’s Glen offers 120 drive-in campsites in two areas near the shore of Lake Jean. Sites can accommodate trailers and RVs up to 40 feet; some sites are ADA accessible, and a few group camps are available. Hookups are not available, but there is a dump station outside the camping area. The Big Loop campground also has five deluxe cottages available to rent. In a separate area, there are 10 cabins available, as well as a boat ramp (rentals available) and snack bar. The most popular activity at Rickett’s Glen is to hike through the three waterfall glens. This can be done via several looping trails ranging from 3.4 miles to 7.2 miles. Two trailheads are located above the falls, from the lakes area, and one is located below the falls, from PA Route 118. Other summer activities in the park include paddling and fishing on Lake Jean, or just soaking up the sun at the beach. An onsite naturalist offers guided walks, nature activities and interpretive programs. There are also limited hunting opportunities. If visiting during the winter season, many of the trails are open for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Ice fishing is popular, as is ice climbing on the waterfalls.
