As its mythical Sirens were reputed to do, Greece has long lured travelers to its scintillating shores.

Across an expansive island archipelago, traditional whitewashed villages, azure seas and waterfront tavernas enchant visitors. Greece’s mountainous mainland, rich in UNESCO World Heritage–listed ancient sites, treasure-filled museums and spirited cities, is no less fascinating. As you contemplate your dream Greece itinerary, consider these 10 favorite places to add to it.

Wherever you walk in Greece’s storied capital, the ancients have walked before – whether you see the evidence or not. From the Acropolis  (whose jewel in the crown is the fifth-century BCE Parthenon ) to the underground metro (where some stations feature archaic finds), Athens  is teeming with historical sites , monuments and museums. Easy to tackle on foot, Athens is also one of Europe’s liveliest metropolises – and strolls through neighborhoods like old-town Plaka , flea market–famous Monastiraki and hip Pangrati are highlights. By night, catch a live band in gritty Gazi , catch a movie at an outdoor cinema in Thission or go bar-hopping off the main commercial street Ermou.

Local tip: Book tickets online for a reinvented Greek tragedy or dance troupe performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus amphitheater as part of the  Epidaurus Festival , which takes place each summer.

A collection of over 70 beaches, sea caves hidden beneath limestone cliffs and technicolor traditional boat houses are just some of the reasons why mineral-rich Milos has won the hearts of many travelers. Evidence of its volcanic origins can be seen in the almost lunar landscape of Sarakiniko , where the more daring dive into a jade-colored Aegean. Arrive early at Gerondas beach to nab the generous shade of caves and enjoy floating silently in still waters.

Planning tip: Save a couple of days to spend on Kimolos, a small island northeast of Milos reachable by ferry. One of its most impressive beaches is Prassa, where coarse, blindingly white sand shows off shallow, aquamarine waters to full effect.

Rhodes has long been the Dodecanese ’s biggest draw thanks to its atmospheric UNESCO World Heritage–listed medieval old town . Transformed in the Middle Ages by the Knights of the Order of St John into a formidable fortified city, it fell to the Ottomans, who erected mosques, baths and houses, many of which have been restored. Youngsters might envision armored men on horseback thundering down the cobblestoned Street of the Knights .

Make sure you visit the Palace of the Grand Master , which features stunning Roman and Early Christian floor mosaics, and the Church of Our Lady of the Castle.

4. Santorini

Whether you’re coupled up or not, it’s hard not to fall for Santorini ’s charms. Whitewashed and pastel-hued, cube-shaped homes cling to steep cliffsides above a cobalt Aegean and the island’s famed caldera, formed by volcanic eruptions over millennia.

Weave your way through the narrow alleyways of the postcard-perfect village of Oia amid blue-domed churches. Bathe in thermal springs warmed by an active volcano, splay out on black-sand beaches and don’t miss the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri , which features an advanced drainage system.

Planning tip: Book a private tour of Santorini ’s smaller wine estates, whose new generation of vintners is breathing new life into traditional wines like mezzo and Nychteri.

In Greece’s west lies Epiros , a remote region of soaring mountain peaks, fast-flowing rivers and hidden rock canyons. Hike to the alpine heights of Mt Tymfi’s Dragon Lake, which freezes over in winter, or traverse the thick forests, inclines and descents of spectacular Vikos Gorge . Whitewater rafting thrills and spills await in the Voidomatis or Arachthos rivers, while canyoning enthusiasts can choose from routes of varying difficulty.

6. Kythnos and Serifos

If peaceful sandy shores, unassuming waterfront tavernas and sleepy villages are more your style, the low-key West Cyclades isles of Kythnos and Serifos are worth a stop. Kythnos has deep, sheltered bays and tamarisk-dotted silver-sand beaches, among them Lefkes and Naousa.

Wallet-friendly tavernas line the laid-back fishing settlements of Loutro and Meriha, while wind-whipped Serifos , a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus , features sweeping sandy beaches, sheltered bays, ghostly mining relics and a jewel-like hilltop capital whose neoclassical town hall stands sentinel over the buzzy main square.

7. Thessaloniki

At the crossroads of East and West, where the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have held sway over the centuries, Thessaloniki tempts serious foodies. Bougatsa , a phyllo pastry pie usually filled with semolina custard, spinach or mince meat, makes for a hearty breakfast. Pick up olives and spices at the olfactory-awakening open-air markets and Pontic cheeses from indoor food hub Modiano , which dates back to 1922. In the former oil merchant district of Ladadika, mezedopolia serve dishes revealing strong Anatolian and Middle Eastern influences, customarily with the fiery clear spirit tsipouro .

Planning tip: Thessaloniki is also renowned for its fish and seafood, served with fervor and pride whether it’s a backstreet taverna or an upscale restaurant. Bookings are recommended for the latter.

Tranquil, turquoise seas, fir-studded hillsides and a regal capital make Corfu one of the most beautiful parts of the country to go sailing. The Ionian isle is the ideal starting point for novices who can take a sailing course and gain certification.

Afterward, join a flotilla for a leisurely cruise around Corfu, dropping anchor at Kalami Bay (of The Durrells fame) and lush Paleokastritsa. In Corfu Town , admire Venetian fortresses, the French-designed Liston Arcade and The Palace of St Michael and St George , built during the island’s British administration.

Planning tip: Few venture to Erikousa island, northwest of Corfu, which is blessed with pristine beaches and shallow cerulean seas.

Greece’s largest island, Crete  abounds in historical sites, well-preserved monuments and modern museums. A wander through the Minoan-era palaces of Knossos , Malia , Phaestos and Kato Zakros  won’t disappoint any fan of classical culture.

Stroll along the Venetian Harbour in Hania , lined with Ottoman monuments such as the Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque . Trek up to Byzantine and Venetian fortresses such as the Fortezza in Rethymno and Kastelli in Hania. In the east, the 16th-century Venetian fortress on Spinalonga islet reveals a harrowing, more recent past as a leper colony.

Among noteworthy museums are the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , Chania’s Maritime Museum of Crete , and the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna in Rethymno.

10. Mykonos

In the 1960s and 70s, Mykonos hosted roving hippies, celebrities and moneyed jet-setters who flirted and danced till the sun came up. While new five-star hotels and swanky brand-name restaurants may have altered the landscape and driven up prices, the fabled Cycladic isle still reigns supreme when it comes to summer nightlife in the Mediterranean.

Revelers can choose from the thumping bars lining Little Venice in Hora , as well as beach bars, cabaret restaurants and iconic clubs like seaside Cavo Paradiso , where illustrious music DJs fire up the crowd.

Planning tip: August is Mykonos’ busiest month. It’s also when you can witness the hottest DJs and surprise appearances by music artists, including prominent hip-hop names.

Best time to visit.

Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 85°-100°F ( 30°-38°C ).

By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes   Athens   and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs

Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama, and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.

Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.

With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands. 

Food and drink

Greek cuisine favors simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill, and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri, and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savor a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavored ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete), and retsina (white wine flavored with pine resin).

Geography and environment

Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey, and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts, and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land in Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes, and grain for export and local use. 

Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos, and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands. 

History and government

Early history.

The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas, and thought movements.

Recent history

In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognized as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles, and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia, and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

Shopping hours vary throughout Greece. Stores in large cities and tourist areas are typically open from 9 am to 9 pm, while shops in other areas close around 2 or 3 pm and reopen between 6 and 9 pm three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). Most stores are closed on Sundays.

Greece is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Greece, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Greece.

Is tipping customary in Greece?

There is not a strong tradition of tipping in Greece, particularly among the locals, but it’s become expected that tourists leave small tips while traveling through the country.

What is the internet access like in Greece?

You’ll be able to find wi-fi at most hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the well-touristed areas of Greece. Alternatively, you can pick up a local SIM card with a data package for continued access.

Can I use my cell phone in Greece?

If you wish to use your cell phone while in Greece and you are not from an EU country, you’ll need to pick up a local SIM card or activate global roaming before you leave home.

What are the toilets like in Greece?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Greece. You may need to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some areas. Keep in mind that the Greek plumbing system isn’t the greatest and you may be asked to put toilet paper in the trash rather than flushing it.

Can I drink the water in Greece?

Drinking the water in Athens and Thessaloniki is safe unless otherwise marked. On the islands, however, the water may not be suitable to drink.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Greece?

Credit cards are widely accepted in  Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.

It’s still worth having some euros on hand, if only to tip the bartender at your favorite island bar and guarantee quick service all evening.

ATMs can be easily found in cities and towns across Greece, including on the Greek Islands.

What is the weather like in Greece?

Greece’s coast and islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and windy, rainy winters, while the inland regions have a more continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. In the northern mountains, close to the Bulgarian border, the winters are cold with heavy snowfall , while the summers are relatively mild.

Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Greece is one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ holiday destinations in the world, with a long history of same-sex relationships dating back to Sappho, the Greek poet, whose home island of Lesvos has become a pilgrimage site for lesbians. Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognized since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.

But for most travelers, it`s a combination of islands and inland, city and countryside, culture and leisure. Getting from each destination is as varied as the places themselves. Whether you`re traveling for a week or longer, chances are you`ll find yourself using boats, trains, cars and maybe even mopeds. By Boat/Ferry: Greece has 227 inhabited islands and more than 8,500 miles of coastline, so it should come as no surprise that boats are one of the most common ways to get around. The country offers an expansive network of ferries between the various islands and archipelagos, as well as ferry services to Italy and Turkey. Within easy reach of the Athens International Airport is Piraeus, which is the main port for ferries plying the Aegean Sea. From there, there are regular routes to the major islands in the Cyclades, Crete, the Saronic Gulf Islands, the Dodecanese chain and the Northeast Aegean Islands. A smaller port in Athens is Rafina, which has ferry service to Evia, some of the northernmost Cycladic Islands and many of the Northeast Aegean Islands. If you’re traveling to the Ionian Islands off the west coast of Greece, most ferries leaves from Patras or Kyllini on the Peloponnese or Igoumenitsa in Epirus. By Car: Driving the mountainous roads of the mainland and the busy streets of some of the more popular islands is not for everyone. If you`re up to the challenge, over 21 years old and comfortable with a standard transmission, renting a car is definitely a great way to explore remote villages in the countryside that are not reachable via public transportation. You will need an International Driving Permit accompanied by a valid driver`s license from your home country. In the U.S., these are available through AAA (American Automobile Association) and NAC (National Automobile Club). Car rental offices are present throughout Greece, especially in major cities and in highly touristed areas. The cars offered generally have manual gearboxes; automatics do exist, but it is advised to reserve one in advance. Some car rental agencies and insurance policies do not allow the car to be taken out of Greece.

The currency of Greece is the Euro. US dollars are not accepted. One euro is divided into 100 cents. The official symbol for the euro is €, and its ISO code is EUR. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for euros upon arrival. Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Our group chose not to do the sunset cruise at Santorini and no other options were given. We found a 5 hour tour by a local company on our own. Something like this could be offered as an option. Other comments from our group: We appreciated the central location of our hotels in Athens and Thessaloniki as they gave easy access to the city’s sites. It would have been nice to arrive in Nafplio earlier in the day to provide an opportunity to explore the town. We would have appreciated getting information about the day's itinerary to know the approximate length of the day and info regarding lunch stops. Providing this the day before or early on the day of travel would have been good. Ten hour days were a bit long. In addition to the above, we would add that an alternative tour of Mykonos be added particularly, if the tour of the islands was at the end. By that time we would have seen many more spectacular ruins than were on Delos. It seemed like the 100km per hour speed limit for the larger van created some timing issues for the drivers. Perhaps your schedule could be adjusted to take that into account and thus allow for a lunch break each day and avoid very long hours on the road. It might mean extending the tour by a day or two. The drivers were great as were the guides and most of the hotels and breakfasts. I’m not sure the hotel in Nafplio was an upgrade. Tiny room facing an alleyway. Greece is a beautiful country and we have returned home with some wonderful memories.

Planning a trip to Greece can be both incredibly exciting and completely overwhelming. We’ve done it multiple times and yet each year presents new challenges as we flesh out the best Greece itinerary to include new places to discover and old favourites.

Most people want to include Greek Island hopping but what about Athens and the rest of the mainland? How do get there and then get around? Where are the best places to stay and what are the ideal places to see in Greece? Are there Visa requirements? What about Insurance? How far out should I book? What will the weather be like? What to pack!?

Basic Facts about Greece

It consists of 132,000 sq kilometres of land including 227 inhabited islands. The population is just under 11 million people.

The religion is East Orthodoxy ( Christian) , they drive on the right hand side of the road and the calling code is +30.

Passports and Visas

Greece is a member of the European Union and as such all residents of the 26 countries that have signed the Schenghen Agreement do not require a visa.

Other countries such as Singapore, Australia and the USA also do not require one but several countries do. Check the official Government website to be sure.

In 2025 the EU is expected to introduce the requirement for many visitors to complete an ETIAS. Applications are not yet being accepted so keep an eye on the official website .

When is the best time to visit Greece?

We believe there is never a bad time to visit Greece but most people will say the ideal time is May, June,  September and October, when the weather is great and it is shoulder season for tourists.

Peak season is July and August and Easter. Orthodox Easter runs for a full week and is the most important holiday of the year. It’s an incredible time to visit with many celebrations across the nation.

How to get to Greece

It is also common for visitors to arrive by sea on both cruise ships and private yachts and charters as well as by train, road and even on foot!

What are the best places in Greece to see

Greece has many incredible destinations and is considered home to some of the most beautiful and interesting sites in the world. There are 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites with another 16 under consideration.

Most people want to see the Greek Islands and particularly the much-photographed islands of Santorini and Mykonos in the Cyclades Group of islands.There are actually several island groups – the Cyclades , the Dodacannese , the Saronic islands , the Sporades Islands , the Northern Aegean islands and Crete so island hopping in the Greek Islands is popular but does require some research.

Some islands are very romantic and are great for couples whilst others are great for families and many are perfect for solo travellers . Some islands are notorious Party Islands while there are many beautiful lesser-known islands in Greece that really deserve more attention.

There are also some incredible things to see on the mainland including Athens – ancient sites like Delphi and Ancient Olympia as well as places of considerable natural beauty and wonder such as Meteora and Mt Athos . The Peloponnese peninsula is becoming more popular and is thought by many to be the ‘real Greece’.

It is easy to organise your own visit to Greece, using the various tips, links and articles on this website. Some people prefer to have it all organised for them and join tours and that’s fine too. 

How many days in Greece do you need?

The fifty million dollar question. Many people will probably say the best length of time to spend in Greece is 3 months, or even FOREVER, but of course that is not viable for most visitors.

We have a number of suggested itineraries for Greece but as a general rule of thumb would say you need the following minimums ; 

• Greece – 4 days. And you will likely only see Athens and a day trip somewhere else.
• Greek Islands – 5 days, which will give you 2 islands.
• Athens and islands – 7 days
• Crete – 7 days.

Ideal minimum – 2 weeks. Perfect duration 4-6 weeks ( or forever).

One of the biggest challenges most people face when planning a trip to Greece is landing on the best itinerary. One that maxismises their time, caters to their interests and stays within their budget.

Many first timers will do the Greek Golden Triangle of Athens-Santorini-Mykonos although some may also venture on to popular spots like Crete , Rhodes and Corfu . Then what? With over 220 populated islands and 131,000 km of area there are so many places to go and things to do you can get TOTALLY overwhelmed.

Transport in Greece

Transport around the country varies and can be at times woefully inadequate or exceptionally good. Whilst private drivers are not as common nor as affordable as in come countries, they do exist. The train and bus network is not as modern or efficient as those in say, France or Italy but the Ferry network is probably the most extensive and effective, in the world.

In Athens taxis drivers, like many cities, can be a bit hit-and-miss so it pays to have the details of a trusted one. For private transfers, we use and recommended these drivers , and if you use the Promo code “GTS” when you book through this link you will receive a further 10% off!

The ferry network is the most extensive and efficient in the world. For bookings we use  Ferryhopper  and we invariably hire a car at each destination even if it’s just for a day or two. Driving in Greece , outside the big cities, is relatively easy, especially on the islands. Be sure to have access to some good maps and do not rely on Google!

In some places, especially Santorini, you will see Donkeys available to ride. We urge you to learn more about that and other transport alternatives on the island too.

To fly between destinations, which is often quicker and cheaper than ferries, we use Aegean/Olympic , although sometimes Skyexpress and even Ryanair will be a good choice. Schedules for ferries, trains and planes are often not available until a few months in advance.

Cruises are also very popular but be warned the big ships go into ports that can get very crowded, many with over 10,000 passengers a day. Do research on Cruise Critic first to get as much information as possible. 

Tours in Greece

There are many tours to and around Greece. Some focus solely on Greece whilst other may combine other countries such as Italy or Turkey . Some last only a few hours in a single destination whilst other can be your entire holiday. Some move at a frenetic pace whilst others embrace a slow approach to exploring Greece. Some appeal to young people on a tight budget whilst others appeal to wealthy retirees – and everything in between.

Accommodation in Greece

We try and support businesses in Greece that are family owned and run when booking accommodation in Greece . This isn’t always possible but when we do we generally use Booking.com. They often allow free cancellation and have the largest portfolio in the country with everything from B&Bs to All Inclusive resorts.

Greek hotels are famous worldwide for their hospitality and amenities. Many are small family run properties that have been in families for many generations and are quite different to what you may be used to at home. Tariffs almost always include a generous breakfast and many rooms have small kitchens. Laundry is usually inexpensive and it’s great to have a connection with locals who are available 24/7 to organise anything you need including car hire, restaurant bookings and more.

Sometimes it is more convenient to stay in private Villas and apartments, especially if you are a larger group. We recommend Vrbo/Stayz who have a great range of quality properties across Greece.

There is some very unique accommodation in Greece and it can be very special to stay in a converted windmill, fishing hut, cave house or Ottoman Mansion. Even Glamping tents, farms and boats!

Like anywhere the locals appreciate your efforts to learn a few useful phrases of Greek , even if its just the basics like Hello, thank you and Goodbye.

It is a relatively easy language to learn with many Greek words used in English and other languages today. The difficulty of course is in the delivery.

Greek Culture

Without a doubt one of the main things visitors to Greece enjoy the most is the Greek Culture . There are a number of things that make it really stand out including the world-famous Greek Hospitality but there’s also the unique architecture, food , dancing, music and more.

When you return home for the first time, or even if you have visited countless times, you will probably be looking for ways to stay connected to the culture and even explore it further.

What to pack for a holiday in Greece

.First and foremost you need to pack light. When you’re dragging your bag over narrow cobblestones, up and down ferry gangplanks, and putting it in the back of small rental cars you will be VERY glad of this.

I have a small hardcover Lojel bag which I adore -it’s waterproof and takes a beating. I can usually use it as carryon on the planes but it can also expand if I do some shopping and I can then check it in. It has come in handy as both a table and a chair at times too! There are similar ones on Amazon such as the Hanke and Level8 Grace – both with front opening compartments.

There are some wonderful shops in Greece so if you love shopping you can pack mostly essentials and pick up many things there. As I often say they are the inventors of sandals and togas and their shoes and kaftans to this day are gorgeous. There are a LOT of great things to buy !

Things you will need for much of the year are swimwear, sunscreen, insect repellent,light natural fiber dresses/shorts/shirts/tops, toiletries and shoes. There are lots of steps so you need good walking shoes – flipflops/thongs, reef/surf shoes and a pair of sneakers. I usually buy a hat when I get there and give it away when we leave, the same goes for a cheap towel or two. It also pays to have a reusable shopping bag that can double as a beach bag.

You may also want things like hairdryers/styling irons, heels, and an evening clutch but I have found these things rarely get used, if ever. Things are casual in Greece, especially in summer. It’s not unusual to see people swim over to dinner from their boats on the islands!

Money in Greece

The official currency of Greece is the Euro . Do not try and pay in other currencies.

Cash is still very much appreciated and credit card facilities in remote areas may be scarce. Legally you must always be given a receipt including and clearly showing, the local taxes.

Tipping is not expected in Greece as Europe does not have a tipping culture. If, however, you would like to tip for great service it is always appreciated. 10% is a respectable amount.

Don’t leave home without insurance!

It’s important to make sure you are covered, not just for medical expenses ( some people may have cover for this with their health insurance in certain countries) but also for lost baggage, flight and ferry delays and cancellations, theft, and emergencies, including something that happens back home while you are away.

Medical treatment in Greece is very good but facilities sometimes are not, so you want to be sure you are covered for the best care in the best clinics and hospitals.

Also, be sure to read the fine print about things such as ‘adventure sports’ which can include ATV and Scooter hire as well as para-sailing and scuba diving. You can often add these at an extra cost but some policies won’t cover them at all.

Stay connected

WiFi is widely available for free throughout Greece. Almost all cafes and tavernas offer it as do hotels, airports and many popular attractions.

Many travellers either choose to buy cheap local ‘burner phones’ on arrival, local SIM cars or use their home carrier. We have a deal with Vodaphone for $5 in many countries including Greece although even this can end up being expensive on a long trip.

Folegandros

Through the ages, Corfu's natural beauty has caught the eye of famous writers like Homer and Shakespeare, as well as ancient Venetian, French and British armies that fought to control the island. Today, it's a picturesque haven for travelers seeking some serious rest and relaxation. There are plenty of resorts overlooking the Ionian Sea and restaurants, bars and shops lining the streets in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town of Corfu. Here, you'll also find plenty of museums, palaces and historic estates to keep you busy. Also budget time for visiting Paleokastritsa, a tranquil seaside village home to a 13th-century monastery and top-notch scuba diving sites.

Santorini's classic Cycladic architecture (think: whitewashed buildings with blue-domed roofs) makes this archipelago one of the most stunning and frequented of all of the Greek isles. On the main island of Thira, you'll find beautiful red and black sand beaches and well-preserved archaeological sites thanks to its volcanic history. After exploring Thira's busy tourist sights, take a day trip to quieter Thirassia to experience its quaint villages and untouched wilderness. You'll also want to visit Santorini's acclaimed wineries. Most are concentrated in central Santorini and can be seen during a winery tour. And don't miss catching the sunset from Oia for a postcard-perfect view.

One of the most popular Dodecanese islands, Rhodes hugs Turkey's coastline. Rhodes' large footprint allows for a wide range of activities for vacationers to enjoy. The island's namesake medieval city, which historically hosted the Knights of Saint John, showcases its rich history with well-preserved Gothic structures and several museums. Meanwhile, turquoise waters and sandy stretches like Lindos Beach (which sits alongside a scenic seaside village) and Agathi Beach (set in a picturesque cove) will suit any beach bum, and nature lovers can delight in the verdant Valley of Butterflies. What's more, Rhodes' many villages and cities boast flavorful food offerings and lively nightlife scenes.

Since only a portion of Karpathos is developed for tourism, this Dodecanese island is a haven for those seeking a secluded, low-key getaway. Spend days swimming in crystal-clear water and lounging on unspoiled beaches like Apella and Kyra Panagia. Adventurers can try their hand at windsurfing, a popular activity in the southern bay of Afiartis, or hike some of the island's mountainous trails. Travelers who really want to get away from it all can also take a day trip via boat to Saria or Sokastro, uninhabited and undisturbed islets that were once connected to Karpathos.

Greece's largest island offers something for every traveler. Sun-seekers can lounge on Crete's sandy beaches (such as Vai and the pink sand Elafonisi), and nature lovers can hike through Samaria Gorge in White Mountains National Park. History buffs can explore ancient sites like the Venetian Fortezza in Rethymnon, or visit Heraklion to see the Palace of Knossos (where the mythical Minotaur reportedly roamed) and check out the esteemed Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Although much of Kefalonia's impressive Venetian architecture was destroyed during an earthquake in 1953, the island still feels magical thanks to its diverse landscape. Wander through charming villages like Assos and Fiscardo to see colorful houses and beautiful churches. Then, soak up some sun on one of the island's pebbly or sandy beaches (Myrtos is the most popular), or take a dip in the clear turquoise water to snorkel or scuba dive. If you'd rather get an adrenaline rush, hike to the top of Megas Soros (the highest point in the Ionian Islands) in Mount Ainos National Park or explore one of Kefalonia's underground caves.

Head to Zakynthos for its breathtaking yet rugged coastline full of hidden cove beaches, some of which are home to the endangered caretta caretta sea turtle species. Popular spots include Navagio (or Shipwreck) Beach – which can only be admired from a distance during a boat tour  – and the magical Blue Caves, where the reflection of the sky and the white limestone turns the water an ethereal shade of blue. Check out the Venetian Castle that overlooks Zakynthos' main town, then visit the Post-Byzantine Art Museum of Zakynthos to peruse art exhibits.

This small island's proximity to Athens makes it a popular weekend getaway for city-dwelling Greeks. But since Serifos is less visited by international crowds, the island retains a distinct authenticity and an opportunity to unwind. Here, visitors should embrace the art of doing nothing. But don't worry, the island's secluded stretches of sand like Ganema Beach (popular with the yacht crowd) and Psili Ammos (known for its soft sand) are perfect for doing just that. More social vacationers can also shop for souvenirs or sip ouzo at open-air cafes in the villages of Chora and Livadi.

Most Greek islands are known for their beaches, but Skiathos features some of the region's best. Here, you'll find more than 60 awe-inspiring options, including secluded Lalaria Beach and clothing-optional Banana Beach. Skiathos' vibrant blue water also makes it a terrific place to go sailing. Or, get picture-perfect views from above by hiking some of the island's 120-plus miles of trails. When you've gotten your fill of sun and sand, spend some time admiring the historic Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria. No visit would be complete without heading to Skiathos Town to eat authentic Greek cuisine and party at a local nightclub.

Spend your next vacation in Syros if you want to be surrounded by history and culture without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists. Syros offers a quieter scene than other Cycladic islands, making it easy to leisurely meander through its charming towns. Check out Ermoupoli's architectural marvels, such as its town hall and the Apollon Theater, then climb the hill above Ermoupoli to Ano Syros, where you'll discover medieval fortifications and panoramic city views. After a few hours of sightseeing, unwind on one of Syros' sandy beaches.

Gorgeous scenery is available everywhere you turn on the Cycladic island of Milos. This volcanic island boasts more than 40 beaches surrounded by jaw-dropping rock formations (check out the lunar landscape at Sarakiniko), as well as houses sporting a variety of vibrant colors. Plus, Milos features multiple caves (including underwater options for scuba diving), hot springs and hiking trails. For a dose of local history, check out the island's catacombs, ancient theater and Archaeological Museum. The latter houses a life-size replica of Alexandros of Antioch's world-renowned Venus de Milo sculpture, which was discovered on the island in 1820.

An ideal spot for slow travel, Astypalea was made for long days of sunning on the sand, hiking through rocky countryside and perusing quaint villages. Shorelines here range from the sandy cove of Agios Konstantinos, which offers spectacular views of the hilltop village of Chora, to the rugged Kaminakia, which is worth the extra effort it takes to get there. Visitors can spend time hiking between beaches while passing Byzantine chapels and scenic monasteries along the way. What's more, the main village of Chora features a Venetian castle, idyllic old town streets to stroll through and a variety of locally produced cheeses and honey to sample.

Part of the Saronic Gulf, Hydra is one of the closest Greek islands to Athens and immediately stands out from its neighbors for its lack of motor vehicles. That's right – you'll have to meander your way around the car-free cobblestone streets on foot or on one of the many mules and horses that reside on the island. But such romanticism is a large part of Hydra's appeal to travelers. While here, walk the island's pebbly shorelines and explore its charming seaside towns like Hydra Town, where you'll discover lavish mansions (many now turned into museums) of elite families of yore and some of Hydra's best nightlife venues.

Folegandros offers a completely different experience than its Cycladic neighbor, Santorini. Here, you'll find undeveloped, hard-to-reach beaches surrounded by steep cliffs, lending a quiet remoteness far from the beach clubs of more touristy islands. Rugged beaches like Katergo and Livadaki are must-visits for their scenery and seclusion, while Agali is a top spot for its nearby tavernas. The clifftop old town of Chora, the largest village on the island, is also worth exploring for its whitewashed architecture, local culture and unbeatable sunset views.

Koufonisia's islands may be among the smallest of the Cyclades, but they offer everything you need for a relaxing seaside getaway. Pano Koufonisi (Koufonisia's only inhabited island) is where you'll find the destination's most beautiful beaches, some of which are clothing optional. After the day's adventures, eat, drink and shop in Chora, the island's capital. For a more secluded feel, take a day trip to Kato Koufonisi to swim or sightsee by boat. A third island, Keros, is not accessible because of its status as a protected archaeological site, but you'll likely see it from afar while traveling.

Paros, one of the most central Cycladic islands, is a mecca for water sports activities. At the island's sun-drenched beaches, travelers can windsurf, kitesurf, scuba dive and go boating, among other pursuits. Away from the water, visitors will find bustling Parikia, which boasts numerous boutiques, restaurants and bars. Paros' capital also features several noteworthy historical sites, including the sixth-century Panagia Ekatontapiliani (which means "Church with 100 Gates" in English) and a 13th-century Venetian castle. Arrive in summer to attend the Festival at the Park, a popular event held annually at the island's 800-acre Paros Park.

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, meaning there's a lot more shore to go around. On this unassuming island, you'll find plenty of beaches to write home about, from popular Plaka to scenic Agios Prokopios, and lots of water sports activities. Due to the Meltemi wind that blows from the north, Naxos is an excellent destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing, so be sure to sign up for a lesson. Also save time for exploring ancient ruins like the temples of Apollo, Demeter and Dionysus.

The community was home to the Oracle of Delphi , which people from all over the Mediterranean traveled to see. Spring (March to May)

Summer (June to August)

Summer in Greece is swelteringly hot. Temperatures often soar as high as 35-40 degrees Celsius in July and August.

The conditions may be perfect for Greek island hopping and lazing on paradisical beaches. However, hiking and extended outdoor exploration can be unbearable in the heat and humidity.

Most people tend to plan their Greece vacations for July and August. Consequently, everywhere is more crowded and you should try and reserve your hotels, tours, and ferry tickets in advance where you can.

Autumn (September to November)

Conditions in Greece in Autumn are similar to the Spring months. Temperatures linger around the late twenties (in terms of degrees Celsius) and the humidity subsides.

Shops, restaurants, and businesses around many of the islands close for the season at the end of September. However, in many places, the waters remain pleasant enough for swimming well into October .

Winter (December to February)

Winters in Greece can become bitter cold. Snow is not unheard of in Central and Northern Greece , and boats from the islands to the mainland run at a much more limited schedule. You can expect temperatures of 10 degrees and below if you are visiting Athens in winter .

For example, Santorini and Mykonos are quite pricey. Conversely, Athens and mainland Greece typically do not break the bank.

Opting to travel outside the peak summer months will save you some money. Prices skyrocket during July and August. Come September, you will find that they have dropped by more than 50%.

Getting Around Greece  

Public transport in Greece is both affordable and reliable . It is also possible to rent a car . Driving in Greece is not as daunting as you may imagine.

Renting a Car in Greece

Opting to embark on your 10 day Greece itinerary with your own transport gives you a lot more freedom and flexibility. There are many charming villages, towns, and monasteries around the country that are tricky to get to unless you have a car.

Anyone between the ages of 21 and 70 can rent a car in Greece. Driving in Greece is not as intimidating as it may sound.

If you are an EU citizen, you must present an EU license. Non EU citizens need to display both their driving license and an International Driving Permit.

Various reputable rental companies operate in Greece. Sixt, Avis, and Hertz have branches across the country. Most offer pickup from major Greek airports.

Explore Greece by Rail

Greece’s rail network is not extensive. The main routes connect Athens to Thessaloniki , Kalambaka, and Patra. Some major cities (e.g. Ioannina ) are not serviced by rail at all.

OSE is the Greek rail network that manages the national trains. You can purchase tickets online, or in person at the train station.

Major renovation efforts have taken place in recent years to improve the service offering of Greek trains. Most services are clean, comfortable, fast, and efficient.

Explore Greece by Bus

KTEL buses are an intercity bus network that connects most major towns and cities in Greece. Small, regional operators service the routes to smaller villages.

KTEL buses are modern and comfortable. However, confusingly, there is not one centralised website to book tickets and review timetables from.

Instead, each region has its own KTEL website. For instance, KTEL Attikis services the Athens region.

Meanwhile, KTEL Chalkidikis services Halkidiki , and KTEL Macedonia covers Thessaloniki. If in doubt, your hotel can advise you where to search for tickets.

Ferries in Greece and the Islands

There are more than 6,000 Greek islands, split across several different Greek island groups . Only a small handful of Greek islands like Naxos and Paros have their own airports. . If you want to go island hopping in Greece, it typically makes sense to fly into Athens first for the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and the Saronic islands. If you are going to be visiting the Ionian, you can fly into Corfu .

Skiathos island is serviced by a lot of European charter flights for travel to the Sporades during the summer months. You will need to depart from different ports and use different ferry operators depending on which area you are travelling to.

Most boats bound for the Saronic islands and the Cyclades depart from Athens’ Piraeus port. Sporades-bound boats depart from Agios Konstantinos and Volos ports.

Meanwhile, Igoumenitsa is the main departure point for Kerkyra and the Ionian. You can use ferryscanner to check routes and fares for ferries in Greece.

10 Day Greece Itinerary: Greece for Culture Vultures

Best time to travel: Autumn and Spring

Greece has plenty to offer those with an interest in world cultures and history. Indeed, this gorgeous Mediterranean country is widely regarded as being the birthplace of civilisation. The cities and settlements here are among the oldest in the world.

In Athens, travellers can walk in the footsteps of Socrates and Aristotle as they meander through the Ancient Agora , and past the sunbleached ruins of temples and shrines that are thousands of years old.

Days One to Four: Athens

It makes sense to start your Greece itinerary in Athens. After all, the country’s main international airport is situated here, making the city a convenient entrypoint for most visitors.

Despite being far from being one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Athens is rich in ancient sites. However, it certainly has its charm.

Behind the gritty outer exterior, Athens boasts a plethora of quirky neighbourhoods, cute tavernas, and quirky coffee shops. You just have to know where to look.

The Greek capital is teeming with history. Its ramshackle streets date back over 5000 years. This makes it one of the oldest cities in the world.

Things to do in Athens

I’ve spent the last three and a half years living here in Athens. This Athens itinerary helps you cross off all of the most important sites in the city. Additionally, it enables you to beneath the surface and explore some of the more “ off the beaten path” areas.

Some of Athens’ main highlights are summarised below.

• Admire the Cycladic architecture of Anafiotika
• Visit the Acropolis
• Do a victory lap around the Panathenaic stadium
• Hike to the top of Lycabettus hill
• Sip tsipouo and ouzo in the tavernas of Plaka
• Venture off the beaten path

Get a Sampler of Island Life in Anafiotika

Anafiotika is one of the most charming spots in Athens. The best part? Very few people actually know about it.

Anafiotika is a charming little village whose houses are decorated in quintessential Greek island style. Envisage quaint whitewashed structures with blue roofs. The neighbourhood cascades down the slopes of Acropolis hill.

To get to Anafiotika, you can follow an unsuspecting path that leads upwards from Plaka. The area was created in the 18th century by residents of the Greek island Anafi who relocated to Athens.

They designed their houses in a style reminiscent of their island homes. As such, the architectural style here is more reminiscent of the Cyclades than what you may expect to see in the Greek capital.

Be a Tourist at the Acropolis

The Acropolis is visible from virtually all corners of Athens . It sits perched precariously atop a craggy, rocky hilltop from where it watches protectively over the city.

This is one of the most important historical monuments in Greece and the western world. Indeed, the Acropolis was almost designated as being one of the “new” seven wonders of the world.

The shimmering marble structure of the Parthenon is a magnificent remnant of the grand city of Pericles that was constructed at the site thousands of years ago. The site is more expansive than many realise.

The Parthenon may be the Acropolis’ “piece de resistance”. However, there are also numerous other important buildings in the area that should not be missed.

This includes the Temple of Athena Nike, the sanctuaries of Pandroseion and Erechtheion, and the well-preserved Herodes Atticus Roman Amphitheatre. Admission to the Acropolis also includes entry to the worthwhile Acropolis museum.

You should dedicate at least a couple of hours to exploring the ruins and the exhibitions. It is advisable to purchase your tickets online in advance, to save time queuing on arrival.

Do a Victory Lap at the Panathenaic Stadium

Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) is the world’s only marble stadium. Dating way back to 566 BC, it was renovated in the 18th century. Later it became the location of the first modern Olympic games.

Today, musical and sporting events are often hosted at the Panathenaic Stadium. Admission to the stadium and its adjoining Olympic history museum is €4.

The latter displays Olympic torches and memorabilia from across the globe. You will often see people jogging around the track in the morning

Hike up Lycabettus Hill

Lycabettus Hill is a slice of tranquility in an otherwise hectic and chaotic city. It towers above the treelined streets of upscale Kolonaki .

Enjoy a pleasant, leisurely stroll through the woodlands and fragrant flower gardens as you ascend the hill. The quaint, whitewashed Orthodox church of Agios Georgios awaits at the top and contains several interesting icons and frescoes inside.

From up here, you have excellent panoramas across Athens and over to the Acropolis. The views are particularly special when the sun begins to set.

At this time, the historical monuments of Athens are illuminated with beautiful twinkling lights. On a clear day, you can see all the way out to Piraeus and the islands of Hydra , Agistri, etc.

Sip Tsipouro in Charming Plaka

Picturesque Plaka is one of the oldest parts of Athens. This is the heart of the city’s tourist district, sure. However, Plaka is so charming that it is quickly forgiven. Even Athenians often come here for an evening tipple or a spot of lunch.

Plaka boasts a labyrinth-like network of winding alleyways, crumbling Greco-Roman ruins, and eccentric markets and boutiques. Look out for the Roman Agora, the Bathhouse of the Winds, and the Ancient Agora while you’re here.

Grab Food in Plaka

Try to avoid the tourist trap restaurants on the steps of Plaka and nearby Thissio where toots are trying to lure visitors inside. Psaras Fisherman’s Tavern (Erechtheos 16) is one of the oldest restaurants in Athens.

It serves up fresh, mouthwatering seafood dishes with fish sourced from the nearby Aegean. To Kafeneio (Epicharmou 1) is another local favourite.

It has somehow escaped the attention of most visitors to Athens, despite being so centrally located. Sample the marinated country sausages and the meze specialties from Northern Greece .

Venture Off the Beaten Path

Athenian districts like artsy Pagrati and chic Kifissia are far more charming and personable than the central areas of Syntagma and Monastiraki . Each Athens neighbourhood has its own personality and town centre.

For instance, Exarchia and Metaxourgeio are known for their street art and emerging creative scenes. Meanwhile, underrated Kypseli is where a lot of foreign immigrants move to in Athens, and thus is home to vibrant international markets and eclectic stores.

You may wish to consider taking a walking tour of these parts of the city with a local. That way, you can really get beneath the surface of what the Greek capital has to offer and discover places that you may not have otherwise considered.

Where to Stay in Athens

Opting to stay in Syntagma, Koukaki , Psiri or Makriyianni will put you in the heart of the action. Here, you are just a short walk away from the main Athenian attractions.

However, venturing a little further afield gives a better insight into local life and culture. This guide on where to stay in Athens discusses the various Athenian neighbourhoods and gives a runthrough of the best possible options.

Day Five: Delphi

The ancient city of Delphi is one of 18 UNESCO world heritage sites in Greece . It is a must-visit for those interested in Greek history and mythology .

Legend has it that Zeus sent two eagles on a quest to find the central point of the universe. They flew to Delphi, and so, the city was built here.

There are several notable sites and ruins at Delphi. These include the temple of Apollo, an ancient amphitheater, and a fascinating museum displaying various artifacts recovered from the region.

Delphi is easily accessible by bus from Athens. It also places you just a short drive away from the next stop on this cultural 10 day Greece itinerary: Meteora.

Days Six and Seven: Meteora

The monasteries at Meteora are a breathtaking sight to behold. The name translates to meaning “suspended in the air”. Quite a fitting name.

This is the second-largest monastic community in Europe. It is second only to Mount Athos in Halkidiki .

The first monks arrived here around the 14th century and crafted 24 stunning Orthodox monasteries on the edges of the craggy cliffs. Today, only six of the original structures remain.

However, it is possible to venture inside, and their interiors are every bit as breathtaking as the exteriors. The scenic hiking trails that wind between the sites, and the stunning natural scenery make Meteora a highlight of any 10-day Greece itinerary.

Many beautiful hotels are located in nearby Kalambaka. Most of these offer impressive views over the monasteries for sunrise and sunset.   

The various monasteries of Meteora are open at different times. You can check the specifics with your hotel.

Keep in mind that conservative dress is required for entering most monasteries. This means keeping your legs and shoulders covered.

Days Eight to Ten: Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a city of remarkable history, sumptuous cuisine, and incredible sea views, a must-see on your week in Greece. This is Greece’s second city.

The streets and promenades of Thessaloniki are always teeming with life and activity. During the days of the Ottoman Empire, Thessaloniki was a city of major importance.

Start your Thessaloniki itinerary by stopping by the White Tower. This is the city’s most notable landmark.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll alongside the seafront as you enjoy the views over the Thermaic Gulf. When the sun sets, check out the vibrant tavernas and restaurants at the Ladadika district .

For drinks, head to the upscale bars that overlook the sunken gardens of Agios Ioannis. Ano Poli is one of the oldest parts of town and consists of quaint, colourful, Ottoman-era houses, many of which have been converted into charming stores, guesthouses, and eateries.

Thessaloniki airport offers onward flight routes to numerous destinations across Europe. Alternatively, you can find a cheap flight back to Athens with a Greek domestic airline for your return flight onwards.

Greece Itinerary 2: Ancient Civilisations & Beautiful Islands

Best time to travel: Shoulder season months (May, June and September)

The Greek islands are a paradise on earth. With translucent cerulean waters and miles upon miles of pristine sandy white beaches, it is not hard to understand why so many people love them. The islands are the main reason that many people pen Greece into their travel bucket lists in the first place.

This 10 days in Greece itinerary takes you to some of the most beloved Greek island destinations. From the romantic sunsets of Santorini to the glamorous beaches of Mykonos, and the secluded paradise of Koufonisia.

Days One and Two: Athens

A 10 day Greece itinerary that combines visiting the mainland and the islands is perfect. Such a trip enables you to see all sides of what this Mediterranean oasis has to offer.

Spend two days in Athens. This is enough to get a taster of the city’s culture and heritage.

From there, head on to the islands that the country is best known for. From Athens, fly or take the ferry to Santorini .

Days Three to Five: Santorini

Santorini’s reputation precedes it. The Greek isle is instantly recognisable around the world.

It is characterised by its iconic white Cycladic buildings that cascade down cliff faces, its multicoloured cliffs, and its volcanic sand beaches. Santorini is likely the main image that springs to mind at any mention of travelling to Greece.

There may be a lot of hype around Santorini but this is for good reason. Santorini, with its dazzling sunsets and panoramas, is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Southern Europe.

Things to do in Santorini

You will not be short of things to do in Santorini. A selection of the island highlights is discussed below.

• Conquer the Fira to Oia hike
• Navigate through the labyrinth-like streets of old Fira

Hike from Fira to Oia

The walk from Fira to Oia is an absolute must on this 10-day Greece itinerary. The 10km volcanic trail is one of the best hikes in Greece . It leads you through stunning volcanic landscapes that look like something from another worldly plane.

Along the route, you pass through the beautiful villages of Fira, Imerovigli, Oia, and Firostefani. The long-distance can be broken up with stops along the way.

Drink locally sourced wine in the tavernas of Imerovigli and take photographs as you admire the views over the caldera. The views are particularly magical as you approach golden hour and sunset.

Browse the Quaint Streets of Fira

The quaint streets of Fira are filled with elegant boutique stores that showcase the creations of local designers. They are the perfect choice for treating yourself to a little retail therapy and purchasing one-of-a-kind pieces that you cannot find elsewhere.

Visit the Akrotiri Ruins

The ancient city of Akrotiri dates back to 1630 BC. This bronze age settlement was sadly destroyed by a volcanic eruption on Santorini.

What remains of the site is somewhat similar to Pompeii. However, Akrotiri predates the Italian ruins. Akrotiri is rumored to have inspired Plato’s story of the lost city of Atlantis.  

Enjoy an Afternoon in Ammoudi Bay

Ammoudi Bay is a charming port filled with red cliffs and whitewashed tavernas. The eateries here serve excellent seafood dishes, and even Santorini residents come here for dinner.

Ammoudi is relatively off the beaten path as far as Santorini travel goes. It is situated 300 steps below Oia. You can board boats bound for Thirassia from the port here.

Meandering along the seafront promenade is charming. However, the highlight of Ammoudi is the secluded swimming spots and rock pools that are tucked away from view.

A weathered path leads you towards Agios Nikolaos rock. This is a favourite among locals for cliff jumping and swimming.

Explore the Byzantine Castle Ruins

The Byzantine castle in Oia was constructed centuries ago. It was built at a time when pirates were a real threat in Greece and locals needed to fortify their defenses.

Exploring the ruins themselves is interesting. However, the panoramas and viewpoints across the island and the sea from up here are second to none.

Visit the Beaches

Santorini is not renowned for its beaches. There are in fact many Greek islands and travel destinations with more beautiful coastlines than Santorini.

That said, the island does boast some unique seaside destinations. The Perissa black sand beach is a nice place to relax and grab lunch.

So too, is Red Beach. The latter was awarded its name on account of the unusual red shade of the volcanic rock here.

Where to Base Yourself in Santorini

Fira and Oia are the most popular towns in Santorini. The best place to stay depends somewhat on your personal preferences. Oia is the classic town that you see in most photographs and postcards of Santorini.

Arguably this is the most picturesque spot and is home to the most famous sunset in the world. however, Fira is the main town of Santorini.

Fira is filled with plentiful bars, restaurants, and entertainment options. Yet the sunset here doesn’t quite compare.

Days Six and Seven: Koufonisia

The appeal of Santorini and Mykonos is indisputable. However, so too is the draw of venturing off the beaten track to quiet Cycladic islands that escape the eyes of most tourists .

The small island of Koufonisia is one such place. It is a perfect spot to escape the crowds.

The island is less than 4km in length. Yet the paradisiacal beaches, inspiring landscapes, and chic hangouts here have won Koufonisia the title of being the “Mykonos of the Mini Cyclades”.

Koufonisia has been attracting trendy Greek locals for several decades. Yet like a lot of the best places to visit in Greece , it remains relatively undiscovered on a more global scale.

Don’t expect beaches lined with taverns, bars, and nightlife here. Koufonisia is the place to escape from all of the buzzes of modern life.

Here you can enjoy secluded coastlines and stretches of sand that you have virtually all to yourself. This is particularly the case if you are travelling during the shoulder season.

Swim and snorkel off the shores of the white sand Pori beach. By nightfall, enjoy home-cooked Greek dishes lovingly prepared in local tavernas that offer views out across to the nearby uninhabited islands.

Days Eight to Ten: Mykonos

The Greek island of Mykonos is synonymous with glitz, glamour, and the idea of living the good life. You could envisage Mykonos as having the elegance of the south of France, with the same party-hard spirit as Ibiza.

That said, you don’t have to be a night owl to appreciate the appeal of the island. The island has some of the most beautiful scenery in the Cyclades and so, Mykonos caters to everyone.

Some of the best activities to enjoy on the glamorous isle of Mykonos are listed below.

Head to Chora to Check Out the Windmills

The windmills at Chora are perhaps the most recognised landmark of Mykonos. They were used for centuries to refine grain, using the high winds that blow across the island.

Though there were originally dozens of windmills, now only seven remain. Some of these have been renovated into quirky residential homes.  

Kato Myloi are the most famous windmills in Chora. They are situated atop a hill that offers incredible views over the sea. The hill is well worth the walk, and this spot is one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset.

Enjoy Dinner and Cocktail Hour at Little Venice

Little Venice consists of colourful, stilted houses that emerge from the sea. Once upon a time, this was a popular hangout spot for pirates!

Today, the stilted houses have been renovated into chic upscale cocktail bars and eateries. Little Venice is one of the best places to enjoy gourmet food with a view during your 10-day Greece itinerary.

Visit Delos, Birthplace of Apollo and Artemis

A day trip to the mysterious island of Delos is one of the most fascinating historical attractions that you could incorporate into your Greece itinerary. This small UNESCO-protected island is considered as being one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece!

According to Greek mythology, Delos was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The island was deemed sacred ground, and no mortal was ever permitted to be born or die on the island.

Ruined temples, sculpture guardians, and colonnaded promenades around the island are remarkably well-preserved. Boats depart daily from Mykonos to Delos.

Stroll Around Mykonos Town Centre and the Old Port

Mykonos’ town centre is comprised of maze-like narrow alleyways and quaint cobbled streets. Enjoy getting lost among the colourful buildings, and browsing through the various boutique stores that are scattered around the town centre.

For dinner and drinks, head to Matogianni. This is the place to see and be seen in Mykonos.

Trendy town centre aside, the old port also brings in its share of charm. This area is filled with beautiful churches and cute coffee shops where locals sip strong Greek coffee and play backgammon. It is a lovely place to walk, take photos and people watch – especially as the sun sets behind the fishing boats.

Go Organic Wine Tasting

Mykonos is home to dozens of vineyards that offer tours and tastings to visitors. You can sample exquisite organic local wines along with fresh, homemade Greek delicacies.

Kopanisti and ladotyri cheeses, charcuterie boards, cold cuts, and horiatiki (Greek salad) are all popular accompaniments. Various tour operators offer Mykonos wine tasting excursions. There are so many stunning places to visit in Greece that it is hard to just shortlist a few. However, if you have a little longer to spend in this Mediterranean paradise, additional destinations that you could consider are detailed below.

Arachova is a worthy destination to add to your cultural Greece itinerary. This is particularly the case if you are travelling to Greece during the winter . The small mountain village is a popular romantic getaway for Greeks during the Christmas period.

Arachova is famed for its reputation as a ski resort. However, it also boasts fascinating archaeological sites, beautiful nature, and the chance to have a more “local” travel experience. It doesn’t get any cozier than snuggling up by the fire in a log cabin in the Greek mountains.

Nafplio is the former capital of Greece and arguably one of the most underrated travel destinations across the entire country. It is possible to visit Nafplio on a day trip from Athens . The charming old town, with its cocktail bars and charming tavernas effortlessly captures the hearts of those who visit.

The island of Crete is filled with enough scenery, history, and culture to warrant an entire two-week itinerary all of its own. On a limited schedule though, 3-4 days in Heraklion is well worth incorporating into your Greece travel itinerary.

Heraklion’s charismatic harbour boasts plenty of charming guesthouses overlooking the Mediterranean. Using Heraklion as a base, it’s possible to access some of Crete’s most important sites within a few days. This includes the fort at Knossos and the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos.

The Saronic Gulf Islands

The islands of the Saronic Gulf are just a few hours away from Athens’ Piraeus port. They boast beautiful secluded beaches and coves, and quaint fishing villages void of tourists.

Explore the quaint port and narrow shopping streets of Hydra – an adorable island where cars do not exist and people get around by horses and donkeys. Alternatively, revel in the rugged natural beauty of Spetses.

Situated on the western coast of the country, the Ionian island of Lefkada is connected to mainland Greece by several bridges. If you are seeking R&R during your Hellenic travels, there are plenty of Lefkada beaches that you can sink your toes into.

Porto Katsiki, Milos, Kathisma, Agiofili, and Egremni are but a few coastal areas that are beloved among locals. Lefkada also makes a good jumping-off point for taking boats out to the islands of Itaka or Kefalonia for a day.

Hi Melissa! I will be traveling to Greece for 9 days in May. I fly in and out of Athens and wanted to incorporate Mykonos, Santorini, Crete and Meteora into my trip. Do you think this is plausible? This would mean 2 days in each place. Would you change this in any way? Thank you!

Hey Emily, Thanks for your message. Your itinerary is certainly possible and all of those are lovely places! The only thing to keep in mind is that it would be a bit hurried. One thing, in particular, is that it takes almost four hours to get to Meteora from Athens so it’s a bit of a trek there and back. Crete is also a very large island. I would be tempted to reduce the number of destinations perhaps and save one or two for next time so that you spend less time travelling and have more time to relax and enjoy the lovely beaches and islands but that is personal preference 🙂 Will you spend any time in Athens itself?

Hi Melissa! Im travelling to Greece this summer. Already booked the following: 1. Land at Athens on 15th August evening 2. Flying from Thessaloniki to Eindhoven (Netherlands) on 27th August 3. Free Earth Festival in Halkidiki – 22nd to 26th August. So I have 16th August to 21st August to travel mainland Greece (i think islands would get expensive for me) starting from Athens and ending at Thessaloniki. After reading your article, I was thinking may be 2-3 days Athens, 1 day Delphi, 1 day Meteora and then to Thessaloniki would be best for me. Do i need accomodation at Delphi and Meteora? Do Delphi and Meteora have cheap accomodation available (hostels)? Do i have travel options that go from Athens to Delphi, Delphi to Meteora, Meteora to Thessaloniki? Are there night buses for these routes?

what would you suggest? i definitely like the chills and beaches (island trips) more but it looks difficult. Sorry for too many questions. And THANK YOU!!!

Hi Melissa; So glad to have found your blog. Me and my dad are thinking of traveling to ONE of these end of November 2021 for 7-10 days: Hydra, Kythnos, (Poros or Tinos) after your recommendations! Think escape tourists, history, traditional pretty villages n good local food, charming, quiet and somewhere budget pref a family run guesthouse. Just super authentic and off beaten track. My dad is 80 yrs old (no car rental over 70? any exceptions?). I have mobility issues..so preferably easy to get to from Athens & the option to get some kind of ride necessary for main part, and not too hilly/stairs for my poor feet..any suggestions? Hi Melissa, Loved your blog. It’s very insightful. I am travelling from India to Greece next month with my husband for 10-12 days. We are not the history types and would rather enjoy nature and nightlife.

3 hours late and all they have is was a $12 meal voucher. That’s not even enough to cover fast food.

Among the poorest flights I’ve had with Delta in a while. Entertainment system failed completely on a 7.5 hr flight. Crew seemed distracted and not the normal friendly crew. Flight overbooked it seemed… very crowded.

If I can, I always fly Delta. I’ve found their service to always be reliable and pleasant.

You could have not cancelled the flight (AA, which I will be flying from now on) left for BOS despite the fictitious weather issues (that no one in my Boston family could see). You could have rebooked my direct flight to another direct flight instead of sending me though JFK, the worst US airport after O’Hara You could have rebooked me on a Main Cabin seat (like the one I paid for in my original ticket instead of putting me a the last row on JFK->BOS leg, pocketing the difference in ticket price But I do not really care whether you will ever do that in a future because in a future neither I nor anyone from my company (unless they pay out of pocket) nor an of my clients and partners (if they heed my advice) will ever be caught dead on any of Delta flights

Really bad baggage handling. Had my Rimowa bag badly damaged at the latches.

It was good until there was a 3 hour delay because there was not any pilots to fly the plane.

I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

Why does it have to be painful to fly long distances?

It is a modern tragedy that any airline expects you to travel for 14 hours in such discomfort and that the only way to add comfort is exorbitant prices. I was in pain by the time we landed. Shameful.

No real agent onsite helping you for missing luggage there. Not like the other airline next to UA desk, they have staff attending in their desk assisting answer/helping luggage issue, even after midnight.

After the morning frenzy of 35 min wait through CLT security at 4;30 AM, it was nice to have a smooth pleasant boarding experience. This 6:30 AM flight was not full. We were able to get seated swiftly and took off promptly. Nice touch they distributed the old fashioned headsets with 8 mm jacks. Snacks were decent and arrival was uneventful.

My window shade didn’t work. So I missed coming into my city. ☹️

Flight was delayed in the gate by 5 hours and ultimately cancelled- rebooking service by United agents was terrible

United delayed the flight to assist customers to make the connection. The Ohara customs area was overwhelm which created an issue for customers trying to make the Little Rock connection. The delayed allow several customers to make the final flight into Little Rock.

Missed our flight to London and we were put on coach seats to Munich.

They canceled our flight last minute and we had to get another flight with twice the cost

Dinner was excellent - beef stew, the eggs for breakfast were only ok. It was soooo nice that there were so many options for movies and games.

Captain waited 45 minutes for late passengers boarding from Washington DC to Munich which was nice for them but caused our luggage to miss boarding our connection on to Bucharest. We then did not receive our luggage for about 48 hours after landing which was very inconvenient for our travel.

Poor, we had 1 hour to grab our checked luggage, go through customs, recheck bags and run across terminals to make our United flight. Poorly planned connections.

Check in in Albuquerque was awful. The people were great but they were over loaded. The procedures were terrible. We got through fine but it took 90+ minutes.

Will try to not fly with them again. Delays because of weather but got redirected to an airport where I could not make connection.

Staff didn’t care in business class. Closed the door on my mom while she was on the jetbridge and flight attendant told me she would make it from the connecting flight. They lied. My luggage was damaged on arrival. No success in filing damage claim.

Economy class has no legroom so if you have the money worth to upgrade! Food was absolutely horrible! The crew was super nice!!!!!

The flight was provided by Aer Lingus and our seats were in a poor condition (15A & 15C). They looked like they needed repairing/replacing and were uncomfortable for such a long flight. Also the arm rests on Aer Lingus planes do not lift more than around 45 degrees, instead of the usual 90 degrees upright, meaning you cannot maximum the space between you & your travel companion so as to be more comfortable for such a long flight.

Flights were actually with Aer Lingus outward and American Airlines & Aer Lingus on the return journey. Outward flight with Aer Lingus was good but the return flight with them was not so good as our seats were in a poor condition (15A & 15C) and looked like they needed replacing! The American Airlines flight from Miami to JFK New York was good and the seats were very comfortable and spacious (32D & 32E)

Awful. Flight delayed and we missed our long flight to Rome. It has been a nightmare and we have still not arrived. It was NOT a weather delay, just poor planning by AA

On my way from Chicago to London, I was seated next to a quite heavy passenger. I could barely move. BA should have ensured that overweight customers are placed in comfortable seats and not to penalize also other passengers because BA is not willing to accommodate these passengers and their needs. No respect at all.

The flight as far as timings go was excellent. Unfortunately we ended up sat with someone on a night flight who had been drinking alcohol before boarding and BA staff were happily serving him more alcohol. He was very drunk which made our flight uncomfortable and awkward. My partner had this person lying on him whilst asleep. Alcohol should be served minimally. If there had been an emergency this person would not have been in a fit state to act accordingly.

Mani Peninsula

In the central of the three finger-shaped peninsulas of the Peloponnese and one of the most wild, remote parts of Greece, the Mani is home to the Maniots, believed to be descended from the Spartans. The dramatic scenery spans the Taygetos Mountains, quiet coves and walking trails linking up hilltop hamlets. The region is divided into the Outer Mani, which includes coastal villages such as Stoupa, and the Deep Mani, visited by few tourists.

Where to stay: For a stay as historic as its surroundings, look no further than Citta dei Nicliani , an officially designated ‘ancient monument’, formed from an old tower and a series of atmospheric stone buildings.

The rugged, mountainous Epirus region of north-western Greece may not be all that well-known, but if you like your classics, you’ll enjoy a visit to the door to Hades, AKA the Necromanteion of Acheron. In Preveza, there’s a charming old town and lots of seafood restaurants; or tour the shores of the Ionian Sea, go canyoning, hike to cliff-top monasteries and stop by pretty mountain villages.

Home to Mount Athos, this part of northern Greece is formed from peninsulas of forests and sandy bays, and has lots of seaside resorts to choose from. Archaeological sites of note include Stageira, which is where Aristotle was born, and Olynthus, founded by the son of Heracles and famous for its mosaic floors.

Where to stay: The westernmost peninsula has the most bustle and it’s where you’ll find Sani Resort, a collection of five hotels – including Sani Beach and Sani Dunes – within a well-equipped estate that has everything from football academies, survival courses with Bear Grylls and tennis courts to fine-dining restaurants and its own marina.

Skopelos and Skiathos

If you thought the backdrop of the first Mamma Mia! film looked like your idea of Greek-holiday heaven, you need to visit the Sporades isles of Skopelos and Skiathos, which are where much of the filming took place. Skopelos has no airport, which makes it a little harder to get to, but all the more rewarding when you reach it. The unspoilt island is much more authentic than many of its crowd-frequented counterparts.

Where to stay: It’s just a short ferry ride to Skopelos from neighbouring Skiathos, which does have an air hub. Over on this island, Elivi was once popular with Jacki O – today, it has villas along the beach, a Japanese restaurant and an Elemis spa.

Crete is the fifth largest island in the Med and there’s so much more to it than popular package-holiday resorts. The capital Chania, on the north-west coast, has a Venetian harbour that was built in the 14th century and a lighthouse from a couple of centuries later with Venetian, Ottoman and Egyptian influences. Classical sites include the Palace of Knossos, a Minoan settlement with its own labyrinth, and the remains of the city of Eleutherna.

Where to stay: In the east, Acro Suites has been created by a Cretan family with several other hotels on the island – each of the stylish, cliff-edge rooms has its own pool and there’s a superb spa, too.

A butterfly-shaped island in the Cyclades, Milos has an incredible landscape that spans red, pink and orange beaches, caves and the lunar landscape of Sarakiniko. In Klima, colourful fishermen’s houses are lined up along the water, and there are beaches marked out as being only for the adventurous, since they can only be reached by ladder (or boat, of course). More amazing rock formations await at Kleftiko, Fyrligos and Glaronisia. Where to stay: A perfect base in Pollonia is Captain Zeppos Boutique hotel , which has just a handful of suites and a very helpful owner, who’ll assist with everything from hire cars to kayaks to borrow.

The tiny island of Hydra in the Argo Saronic Gulf, close to the Peloponnese coast, is just 10 miles long. It was once home to Leonard Cohen – the singer lived here in the Sixties and it’s where he met his muse Marianne. The main harbour is the only town, there are no cars (just horses, donkeys and water taxis), bells ring out from its hundreds of churches and the coves are scented by pine. You won’t find any big resorts or high-rise hotels, and there are certainly no arrivals by air.

Where to stay: Not to be confused with a certain behemoth hotel brand, the Four Seasons Hydra Luxury Suites is one of the most charming places to stay on the island.

The ancient landmarks of the capital make it one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece, with people eager to explore the classical sites – the most famous of which, of course, is the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel with buildings that include the Parthenon temple. More archeological treasures await at the many museums, which showcase ceramics, sculptures and jewellery from Ancient Greece. The modern city is a lively one, with neighbourhoods such as gallery-packed Kolonaki and edgy Exarcheia.

Where to stay: Keep watch over the Acropolis from the comfort of the Hotel Grande Bretagne on Syntagma Square, which has been offering refuge to classics fans since 1874.

Santorini and Mykonos may steal a lot of the Cyclades’ thunder, but Sifnos is just as captivating as its more tourist-frequented neighbours. Fittingly for the birthplace of beloved Greek chef Nikolaos Tselementes, the island has some excellent foodie credentials – visitors can dine at upscale seafood bars where the jet-set yachts drop anchor and traditional tavernas, and try island-made goat’s cheese, chickpea fritters and aniseed buns in the ancient villages. Sifnos also has 235 whitewashed churches, monasteries and temples to Artemis and Apollo.

Where to stay: Verina Astra is a boutique hotel with pastel-coloured shutters, shaded terraces and stone walls that gives its guests a taste of the traditional Greek-island life.

Paros and Antiparos

Somewhat of a Cyclades secret (until now), the word is out about Paros and its diminutive neighbour Antiparos. The islands have A-list approval – Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson had a home on Antiparos and Salma Hayek was spotted on Paros in recent summers. Paros has all of the appeal of its starrier neighbours, such as Santorini and Mykonos, but it’s a much more discreet kind of style. Spend your days hiking inland near Lefkes and your evenings strolling the beautiful towns Naoussa and Parikia.

Where to stay: Cosme is next-door to the harbour town of Naoussa, which means you’ll be within walking distance of the many bars and restaurants lining the water’s edge, not to mention the several boutiques that were made for souvenir shopping.

If you are in search of glitz and glamour though, Santorini is one of the flashiest of the Greek islands – mostly thanks to its spectacular sunsets, but also because of its luxury hotels, fine-dining scene and captivating (and croissant-shaped) coastline. The northern town of Oia, with its famously cliff-hugging architecture, may be packed with people in search of a church with a blue dome, but there’s a reason it’s so popular – the views of the sparkling Aegean and the caldera are mesmerising. Hike the shoreline south to Imerovigli for a workout and more incredible views.

Where to stay: A little away from the action in Oia (and all the more peaceful for it), Santo Pure has been modelled on a traditional Cycladic village, with whitewashed villas forming the standalone suites, several pools and a cocktail bar with a prime view for sunset. As an added bonus, there’s a footpath taking you up into Oia in minutes.

One of the Ionian Islands, Zakynthos has everything you could hope for in a Greek holiday destination, from beautiful beaches to a capital with a harbour for sunset strolls. Some of the beaches, such as Navagio, can only be reached by boat – you’ll also be able to see the shipwreck from 1980 that’s been left behind in the cove.

Where to stay: For the ultimate seclusion, check in to Porto Zante , a series of private villas on a peaceful beach that is formed from just nine buildings, each of which has a private pool and up to four bedrooms. Other highlights include the spa by the water and the two restaurants.

Monemvasia, Peloponnese

On the mainland, Monemvasia is one of the most magical towns in the Peloponnese. It’s in the region of Laconia, which linguists will be delighted to learn is where the word ‘laconic’ derives from, but that’s not to say that they’re not a friendly bunch. The town is on an island off the east coast of the Peloponnese that’s connected to the mainland by a 200-metre causeway. The main attraction is the medieval castle at the edge of a cliff, but don’t miss the narrow shop-lined streets, too.

Where to stay: Kinsterna Hotel is set on a vineyard and olive grove – don’t go home without stockpiling their wares at the shop. The serene retreat has 25 acres of grounds and a view of the castle.

Made famous by Captain Corelli’s Mandolin , the film of which was shot here at the turn of the century, Kefalonia is in the Ionian Islands. The Hollywood scouts chose Sami Beach as their backdrop, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, thanks to its limestone cliffs and sandy coves. The hillside capital Argostoli overlooks a harbour; and Myrtos Beach in the north of the island is just one of the picturesque places for a swim.

Where to stay: At F Zeen , guests can enjoy yoga on a deck overlooking the Ionian Sea, film nights at the outdoor cinema and drinks down on the beach, along with guided hikes and meditations.

In the eastern reaches of Greece and close to the Turkish border, Samos is a Greek island for the more adventurous traveller – and any mathematicians hoping to go on a Pythoras pilgrimage (the philosopher was born here). The island has another famous son: it was the birthplace of Epicurus, whose disciples can indulge today at the tavernas that line the harbours or at one of the vineyards where sweet muscat wine is produced. This is also where you’ll find the remains of the Temple of Hera.

Where to stay: Casa Cook Samos near the town of Pythagoreio has no fewer than six swimming pools, a beachside restaurant with a Josper grill and siesta-ready cabanas suspended above the water.

Between Turkey and Greece, there are plenty of spectacular spots for a seaside vacation. So why not go beyond the usual suspects? Here are five lesser-known choices.

In April, Princess Cruises told passengers that it was canceling a scheduled stop in Santorini, Greece, citing congestion. Four cruise ships were already anticipated to arrive on the same day in June, and were it to join, the ships would have brought some 17,000 visitors to an island of 15,500 residents.

In the Aegean Sea, more than 1,000 islands fill the waters between Greece and Turkey, and the coastlines are lined with spectacular bays. Both countries set tourism records last year, a boon for two fragile economies, but one that follows and in turn fuels frenzied development that threatens local livelihoods, cultural heritage and ecological balance, particularly on the Greek islands.

With plenty of whitewashed islands and historic coastal towns offering the same charms as their neighbors, it’s time to look beyond Mykonos and Marmaris to lesser-known spots that might benefit from more visitors. Whether you’re in search of a hiking adventure, a cultural excursion or seclusion in rugged beauty, here are five destinations that offer distinctly Aegean experiences, without the crowds.

When Michelin expanded its Turkey guidebook last year, the quiet district of Urla, near the port city of Izmir, stole the spotlight. On a windy peninsula with clay-heavy soil, the hilly region has a rich winemaking tradition that dates back 6,000 years. A near-total government monopoly on winemaking stymied production for decades, but recently boutique makers and chef-driven restaurants have carved a path for themselves and put Urla on the gastronomic map.

Newer wine producers like Hus focus almost exclusively on indigenous grapes, joining longtime innovators along the Urla Vineyard Route , which winds through rolling fields, olive groves and nine wineries, two of which have beautiful guest rooms, including 2 Rooms hotel at Şarapçilik (from $230). Each producer is no more than a 20-minute drive from the next.

“It’s as if everything here is passed down from word of mouth, from generation to generation, from season to season,” said Seray Kumbasar, the sommelier and co-owner of Vino Locale , a fine-casual restaurant among vineyards.

The local grape Bornova Misketi, a semisweet ancestor of muscat, features in many of Vino Locale’s Italian-leaning dishes. Ms. Kumbasar and her husband, Ozan, who is the chef, take a hyperlocal approach, harvesting the restaurant’s produce alongside the farmers who supply it. Most menu items are bright takes on simple ingredients: The heart of a local artichoke is boiled in a fragrant broth of herbs and citrus, then doused with olive oil and paired with fava bean purée and kumquat.

On the way to the coast from wine country, the restaurant OD Urla has a similarly light-handed style. Wood-fired dishes, like a gently cooked octopus or squid drizzled with fermented pomegranate syrup, combine seafood from the peninsula’s waters with produce from an on-site farm.

In the charming town of Urla itself, stone alleyways connect multi-hyphenate spaces like İstifçi , where a combined design and wine store leads to a restaurant and hotel; laid-back hangouts like Filos Coffee and Wine , which serves a selection of the area’s wines by the glass; and mom-and-pop shops that do one thing very well, such as Girit Pastanesi with its bademli kazandibi, an almond-studded caramelized milk pudding.

The seaside town of Ayvalik, 250 miles southwest of Istanbul, was once a hub of Ottoman-era olive oil production. Many of the industry’s stone factories are now populated with workshops focused on traditional Turkish crafts. Despite growing tourism, Ayvalik retains “a raw texture,” said Özlem Erol, the founder of the design store Moyy Atölye , as well as “a permanent community that lives and produces here.”

At her boutique, Ms. Erol works with women artisans to design clothing made from feretiko, an airy, handwoven fabric of hemp and cotton, as well as other crafts, like baskets made from the bark of hazelnut trees and braided wooden stools. At Bovindo , one of many shops selling porcelain works created on site, a ceramist creates elaborately etched plates based on her mother’s old dishware. At Tia Vine Cafe & Bar , the husband-and-wife co-owners, Hasan and Neşe Erdem, serve local wines alongside Circassian family recipes, such as haluj dumplings, pockets filled with puréed potato and covered in garlic yogurt.

Most of the action is centered in the neighborhood of Macaron, where every other corner seems to have either a small-batch olive oil store, antiques market or boutique hotel. The most contemporary, Ivy Ayvalik, opened last year in a traditional stone home (from $70). Four compact but comfy rooms sit above a neon-lit cafe and wine bar that stays lively late into the evenings.

From town, it’s a three-mile drive to the island of Cunda and its Ayvalik Islands Nature Park , where you can explore the rocky coves and a hiking path through the hills that opens onto sweeping views, before heading into Cunda’s main town for plates of sardine tartines at Ayna and herbal drinks at Cactus , one of many cocktail bars that circle the area’s central square.

With resort-filled Bodrum to its north, the nightlife capital of Marmaris to its east, and the ever-popular Greek island of Rhodes to its south, it’s a surprise that Datça has stayed relatively unknown. That is, until you look at a map: the long, narrow peninsula is connected to the mainland by a thin isthmus (plus a ferry from Bodrum) that’s somehow been enough to deter most visitors.

Güven Çetinkaya is the chef and co-owner of the Ultava Houses hotel, which consists of four traditional village homes that have been updated with amenities like private rooftop pool terraces (from $170). He said that unlike in more touristed areas, most of Datça’s residents have lived there for a long time. The region’s strict building codes have kept large developments away.

Along with a waterfront of fish restaurants, there’s Eski Datça, or the old town, where bougainvillea spills over stone buildings. There are just enough small restaurants and cafes to start and end your days here, but most visitors spend the hours in between exploring the pebbled beaches tucked into büks, or “bends,” that dot the peninsula’s 200 miles of coastline (Aquarium Cove is a standout).

The drive along the peninsula’s interior — marked by Valonia oaks, deep river gorges and stonewalled almond orchards — is just as spectacular. Along the way are detours to fishing villages turned into modest beach towns, home-style restaurants set in lush gardens, and at the peninsula’s western tip, the ancient site of Knidos and its Hellenic amphitheater.

Almost a third of this island in the western Cyclades can only be reached by footpaths, which act as small windows into its storied history. Some routes date back to the Neolithic period; others were forged by the miners of gold and silver who made Sifnos one of the richest stops in ancient Greece. “Today, they are still used by the locals to reach their terraced fields and small chapels, as well as by hikers,” said Fivos Tsaravopoulos, co-founder of Paths of Greece , a national hiking cooperative.

For close to a decade, the group has carefully restored some 60 miles of the island’s network and organized several self-guided themed hikes . One is a remote nine-mile path that circles Sifnos’s highest point, Mount Profitis Ilias, and passes chapels, terraces and a nature preserve known for bird-watching. “It’s the only way to experience what it’s like to live on this island, one of the most pristine in the Cyclades,” said Mr. Tsaravopoulos, who hopes the paths encourage more travelers to come during the shoulder seasons, when there’s good hiking weather.

In between hikes you can enjoy long meals of Sifnian delicacies, many slow-cooked in olive-wood-fired ovens. Since Nicholas Tselementes, considered the most important chef in Greece’s history, established himself here in the early 1900s, the island has kept up its culinary reputation.

Sifnos staples like revithada, a baked chickpea stew, and mastelo, roasted lamb, can be found at every taverna, while newcomer eateries like Cantina lean more creative — smoked-ox-cheek-croquettes topped with eggplant béchamel, for example. For a stay that rivals those in Mykonos, the 18-room Nos Hotel & Villas (from $825), the island’s latest addition, is all stone and marble surfaces, cinematic lighting and pools perched on the hillside.

Folegandros

About an hour west of Santorini by ferry, Folegandros is a quieter option for a classic Greek-island getaway. The sparsely developed island has no airport, less-accessible beaches and few visitor attractions — and that’s the draw. Its latest hotel, billed as its first luxury property, capitalizes on this feeling of seclusion: Gundari is in an 80-acre nature reserve known for its population of Eleanora’s falcons (from $640).

Unlike other luxury developments in the Cyclades, which often stoked ire among locals, Gundari hopes to set a different tone through its small-footprint commitments. The hotel has its own wastewater treatment system, and all of its stonework was made with rocks excavated on-site. An on-site farm, which employs traditional agricultural practitioners, will soon launch after-school programs.

Each of the 27 rooms comes with a private infinity pool, and its restaurant, run by Lefteris Lazarou — the chef behind Athens’s Michelin-starred Varoulko — will serve a rotating menu of unfussy seafood dishes, such as octopus carpaccio with fava bean cream and black garlic. From its cliffside setting, you can head down to white sand or pebbled beaches via e-bike.

The main port town of Karavostasis is little more than a fishing village. The second largest village, Ano Meria, has ancient hilltop ruins, traditional farmhouses and the Ecomuseum , which captures what homestead life was like. Chora, the island’s de facto capital, with its quintessential whitewashed squares on a cliff’s edge, has all the charm of busy towns on nearby islands but maintains an intact local community.
