The Cornell Big Red have released their 2025 football schedule via their official athletics website .

Cornell will open the 2025 season with a non-conference game on the road against the UAlbany Great Danes on Saturday, Sept. 20. The Big Red will also host the Colgate Raiders on Saturday, Oct. 4 and the Bucknell Bison on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y., which will round out non-conference action.

Cornell was previously scheduled to open the 2025 season at home against Colgate, but the game date was swapped with the UAlbany contest, perhaps due to changes in the Patriot League .

The Big Red kick off Ivy League play in 2025 on the road on Saturday, Sept. 27 against the Yale Bulldogs. Other road conference opponents include the Harvard Crimson on Oct. 11, Penn Quakers on Nov. 8, and Dartmouth Big Green on Nov. 15.

Cornell will host three Ivy League foes at Schoellkopf Field next season. The Brown Bears visit on Oct. 25, Princeton Tigers on Nov. 1, and Columbia Lions on Nov. 22.

Below is Cornell’s 2025 football schedule, which is tentative and subject to change:

Lab of Ornithology visitor center celebration set for Sept. 14

By pat leonard lab of ornithology.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is celebrating the reopening of its newly redesigned Visitor Center with a free event, to be held Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event – which will also include a special edition of the annual Migration Celebration – will kick off with a ribbon-cutting at 10:15 a.m., with remarks from Cornell Lab Executive Director Ian Owens.

Macaulay Library lets visitors become immersed in a world of natural sounds.

Macaulay Library lets visitors become immersed in a world of natural sounds.

“We asked the Visitor Center design team to deliver an overall message of ‘Welcome, Wow, and What next?’” Owens said. “The first thing that hits you is a wall of media with awe-inspiring footage of birds from every continent and a huge, spinning data globe showing a livestream of what birdwatchers around the world are seeing at that moment. It makes you feel part of something much bigger.”

“We’re thrilled to have people come and explore all our new, colorful, interactive exhibits,” said Lisa Kopp, the Cornell Lab’s visitor experience manager. “We want to inspire people, feed their curiosity and show them that science can be fun. We also want them to understand how important it is to care about birds and nature in this rapidly changing world.”

The celebration schedule includes guided trail walks, bird-banding demonstrations and live birds of prey from the  Cornell Raptor Program . Visitors can learn about birds in Native American culture with dynamic Haudenosaunee storyteller Perry Ground. There will be workshops devoted to native plants; tips on choosing binoculars; and DIY projects that help make windows safe for birds by preventing collisions.

At the new sound table in the Adelson Family Bird Discovery Lab, visitors can touch animal images floating by at any of the headphone stations to get playlists or single sounds of birds, mammals, insects and other creatures.

A visitor explores the intricacies of flight.

“We’ll be welcoming visitors to peek behind the scenes by taking a tour and learning from our scientists about the Lab’s biodiversity-focused work on birds, whales, elephants and more,” said Mya Thompson, co-director of the Lab’s Center for Engagement in Science and Nature. “And we hope our guests will leave a comment on the new ‘Wall of Hope,’ describing how nature has touched their lives.”

The complete schedule for the celebration is available on Visitor Center website.

“The refurbished Visitor Center is a big ‘thank you’ to all the people who have made the Lab what it is today – from the local communities and schools to the millions of people that drive our participatory science programs,” Owens said. “We appreciate the generations of Cornell students who have found inspiration here, and especially to all our members and supporters who have so generously made it all possible.

“It’s often humbling to feel that affection for the Lab,” he said. “This is a chance to give something back.”

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday; the center is closed on Monday.  More information about public events at the Lab  is available here .

Panelists to examine crypto mining impacts

Milstein Program in Technology & Humanity

By | Kathy Hovis , A&S Communications

The environmental and economic impacts of Bitcoin mining will be explored during a Sept. 23 event on campus.

“ In the Shadow of Crypto: Taking on Bitcoin Mining ” is presented by the Milstein Program in Technology & Humanity and will take place at 5 p.m. in the Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall Room 132.

"The dizzying rise of cryptocurrency in the U.S. has brought with it a new industry – bitcoin mining, where thousands of computers in former gas plants and even abandoned dollar stores solve complex math problems to get rewarded with new coin," said Austin Bunn , associate professor of performing and media arts and director of the Milstein Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. "But this digital innovation comes with real-world consequences.”

Bitcoin mining consumes 2.3% of all U.S. electrical demand — as much as Argentina or six million American homes annually – and is on track to hit 8% by 2030. After Texas and Georgia, Upstate New York is the top location for mining operations.

“What are the regional environmental and economic impacts of these mines?” Bunn said. “I'm excited to learn more from those who have studied them, regulated them and live in their shadow."

Bunn will moderate the panel discussion, which will include:

  • Yvonne Taylor, co-founder and vice president of Seneca Lake Guardian, a citizen group focused on protecting the Seneca Lake watershed and the Finger Lakes region. Taylor and the group fought to keep gas drilling out of the Hector National Forest, worked to help ban fracking in New York state and partnered with others across the state to pass a statewide moratorium against the use of fossil fuel burning power plants for bitcoin mining while an environmental impact study is underway. She is one of the central activists organizing a call to stop bitcoin mining at the Greenidge power plant near Dresden, N.Y.;
  • Colin Read, professor of economics and finance at SUNY Plattsburgh and the author of “The Bitcoin Dilemma: Weighing the Economic and Environmental Costs and Benefits”; and
  • Owen Marshall , visiting assistant professor in the Department of Science & Technology Studies (A&S). Marshall works at the intersection of sound studies, media archaeology and the sociology of science and technology.

"Crypto mining preys on unsuspecting towns by exaggerating the impact of new jobs and revenue, while ignoring concerns about wasteful energy practices, higher electricity rates, increased emissions, enormous water consumption, high noise levels and massive amounts of electronic waste," Taylor said. "Despite their adverse impacts on the climate and neighboring communities, crypto miners continue to face virtually no oversight or regulation and remain eligible for subsidies and tax breaks, benefiting no one but their own bottom line.”

Marshall said he’s been conducting interviews and doing participant observation research within the grassroots movement against crypto-mining since early 2022.

“It has been fascinating to witness the founding and growth of the National Coalition Against Crypto-mining, which arguably began with the Bitcoin mining power plant controversy on Seneca Lake,” he said, adding that he hopes the talk will help people develop a more informed and critical awareness of crypto-mining's impacts.

The panel discussion is open to the public and will be followed by a reception in the Klarman Atrium in Klarman Hall. The event is cosponsored by the  Rural Humanities initiative (A&S).
