Frequently Asked Questions

Covid test site results.

We thank all members of the community who have taken the time to get tested.  This is vital to keeping our community safe.

The response time for receiving a test result may vary depending upon whether you have symptoms or not, and the volume of tests the labs needs to analyse.  We ask that you be patient. However, if you  haven’t received your test result after 3 working days please contact one of the following pathology labs directly, according to where your test was conducted:

I have symptoms. How do I go out for testing?

If you have any symptoms, you should put on a mask (if you have one) when you go to get tested. This will help prevent spreading the infection to others. If you need one, you will be given a mask to wear by your doctor when you are tested. Avoid using public transport, taxi or rideshare services.

A suspected case is someone who has symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) and who has been tested but has not yet found out the results of the test.

If you have symptoms and are advised to do so by a doctor or healthcare worker, you should return home immediately after the test. There is a risk that you could have coronavirus (COVID-19) and could spread the virus to other people. You must remain in self-quarantine at home until you find out your test result.

For more information, read the  factsheet for suspected cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) . To get further advice, call the 24-hour coronavirus hotline 1800 675 398 or your general practitioner.

What do I need to bring with me?

You need to bring your Medicare card.

If you don’t have a Medicare card then bring one form of identification, like your driver’s licence or student ID.

Is the test free?

Yes, the coronavirus (COVID-19) test is free for everyone. There is no fee for the test when you get tested at a public health facility, mobile testing centre or GP offering bulk billing.

Can I take someone I care for to get tested?

If you usually provide care or assistance to someone who may otherwise have difficulty getting tested, such as an elderly relative, you may take them to a testing centre.

What should I do after getting tested?

If you have symptoms, or are being tested because you are a close contact of someone with COVID-19, you must return home immediately after the test. Do not make any stops on your way. There is a risk that you could have coronavirus (COVID-19) and could spread it to other people. You must remain in self-isolation at home until you find out your test result.

For more information on self-isolating, visit  https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/self-quarantine-coronavirus-covid-19 .

There is no need for others in the house to quarantine unless you are confirmed to have coronavirus (COVID-19). As always, we encourage anyone with symptoms to get tested, so if anyone you live with experiences symptoms they should get tested too.

How long does it take to get the results?

It usually takes  THREE (3) to FIVE (5) days  to get your results after being tested. Due to the volumes of test it may take a little longer.

What happens if I test positive or negative (normal)?

You will be contacted by phone or SMS to inform you of your results, regardless if it is positive or negative.

If you test  positive (you have COVID-19) , whether or not you have symptoms, you must immediately self-isolate. You will be contacted by a public health worker from the DHHS for advice on the next steps.  A doctor/GP from DPV Health will also contact you.

If you are unwell, please contact your usual GP via telephone. If you are having trouble breathing or have serious concerns, please call 000 .

For further details contact DPV Health by calling 1300 234 263 (push 1 for Medical) .

Frequently asked questions

There are currently 4 approved COVID-19 vaccines for use in Australia:

  • Pfizer/Comirnaty vaccine
  • AstraZeneca/Vaxzevria vaccine
  • Moderna/Spikevax vaccine
  • Nuvaxovid (Novavax)

For the primary schedule, people aged:

6 months and over can have the Pfizer vaccine

  • For most people the Pfizer primary course is 2 doses, 8 weeks apart.
  • For children aged 6 months to under 5 years, the primary course is 3 doses, 8 weeks apart.

12 years and over can have the Spikevax (Moderna) and the Nuvaxovid (Novavax) vaccine.

  • For most people the Moderna primary course is 2 doses, 8 weeks apart.
  • For most people the Novavax primary course is 2 doses, given 8 weeks apart.

60 years and over can have the Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) vaccine. 18 to 59 years can also have the Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) vaccine, however, will be required to have an assessment of suitability by a general practitioner

  • For most people the AstraZeneca primary course is 2 doses, 4 to 12 weeks apart.

A primary vaccination course consists of 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. A third primary dose is the recommendation for people aged 6 months or older who are severely immunocompromised or have a disability with significant or complex health needs.

The booster dose is given 3 months or more after the primary course and is for people aged:

18 years and over, the recommendation is to have the Pfizer vaccine or Moderna Bivalent vaccine, regardless of which brand of vaccine you received for your primary vaccination course.

5 to 17 years, the recommendation is to have the Pfizer vaccine, regardless of which brand of vaccine you received for your primary vaccination course.

18 years and over, while not preferred, you can receive the AstraZeneca or Novavax vaccine

This booster dose will be the fourth dose for people who are severely immunocompromised, since the recommendation for this group is to receive 3 primary doses.

The 2023 booster dose is given 6 months after you receive your last COVID-19 vaccine dose or confirmed infection (whichever is the most recent) and is for people who are:

  • Aged 18 years or older
  • A resident of an aged-care or disability-care facility
  • ATAGI advises that children and adolescents aged 5-17 years who have medical comorbidities that increase their risk of severe COVID-19, or disability with significant or complex health needs should consider a 2023 booster dose. Please call to make an appointment with your GP to discuss the 2023 booster.

If you are aged 16 to 17 years, you can only have the Pfizer vaccine as your winter booster dose.

If you are aged 18 years and over, the Pfizer or Moderna Bivalent vaccines are the preferred vaccines.

If you are severely immunocompromised, this additional booster dose will be a fifth dose since the recommendation for this group is to receive 3 primary doses.

The Health Service, University of Melbourne, is administering the Comirnaty (Pfizer) and the Spikevax (Moderna) Bivalent as boosters. Regardless of which COVID-19 vaccine you received for your initial doses, you can still receive one of these as your booster.

A booster vaccination is still highly recommended, even if you have tested positive to COVID and have had a two-dose primary vaccine course. Depending on how many vaccines you have received will determine how long you are required to wait before receiving your booster. Please call to make an appointment with your GP to discuss.

The TGA report that most side effects are mild and go away within a couple of days.

For details on possible side effects for each vaccine, please see:

  • Comirnaty (Pfizer)
  • Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca)
  • Spikevax (Moderna)
  • Nuvaxovid (Novavax) .

If you are a domestic student or staff member and are registered or eligible for Medicare, please make sure your details are up to date with Medicare. You can do this using either your:

  • Medicare online account through myGov
  • the Express Plus Medicare app
  • calling the Medicare program

If you don’t have your account set up, you can:

  • Enrol in Medicare , if you’re not already enrolled.
  • Set up your Medicare online account if you’re enrolled in Medicare, but don’t have Medicare linked to myGov.

If you are an overseas student or staff member and not eligible for Medicare, you will need to obtain an Individual Health Identifier (IHI) to receive your COVID-19 vaccine as well as other vaccines, including the flu vaccine. Please click to get an Individual Health Identifier (IHI) .

Boosters are not mandatory, though it is highly recommended to have the 2023 dose to maintain best possible protection for you, your loved ones and the community against the virus and any new emerging strains.

The Health Service, University of Melbourne, is not currently offering COVID-19 vaccinations for children. Please check the Government website for information regarding providers.

Although it is no longer a requirement to have an IHI number to receive a COVID-19 vaccination it is beneficial as it will allow you access to your COVID-19 immunisation statement via the myGov website. If you are not eligible for Medicare, e.g. you are an international student on a visa, then you can  get an Individual Health Identifier (IHI) .

To find out  how to setup a myGov account if you require assistance with access to your vaccination record.

COVID-19 vaccines will be free for everyone living in Australia including citizens, permanent residents and most visa-holders. Those on visitor visas, electronic travel authority, eVisitor and Transit visas are currently excluded.

You will not need a prescription from a GP to get vaccinated.

If you have a Medicare card, please bring it with you.

Yes, you can have other vaccines at the same time as your COVID-19 vaccine. Please speak to your health care provider for any further information.

For the latest news and information about vaccines in Australia, visit the  Australian Government’s COVID-19 vaccine website .

If you are a Melbourne University student or staff member, please make an in-person appointment with one of our GPs. You will be required to bring a hard copy of your official vaccination record (translated to English) provided by your Country, that will state the COVID vaccination you were given along with the date your vaccination was administered and the batch number.  You will also be required to bring your passport for verifying your identity.

Please ensure you have your Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) number as we cannot upload your vaccinations to the Australian Government without one.

There are 5 ways you can show your COVID-19 proof of vaccination to gain entry to businesses and venues in Victoria.

  • COVID-19 digital certificate via the Service Victoria app
  • COVID-19 digital certificate saved to a smartphone wallet
  • Printed copy of COVID-19 digital certificate
  • Printed copy of immunisation history statement
  • Eligible proof of vaccination exemption

I got a PCR test for international travel – here’s 5 things you need to know

Jumping on a plane isn’t as simple as it used to be (however, as I type this poolside from Fiji, I can guarantee it’s still worth it).

Alongside vaccination certificates and travel declarations, we have to juggle PCR tests, rapid antigen tests, self-isolation and quarantine, not to mention a new layer precaution in having to consider our daily routines in the lead up to a PCR test. Each destination has their own set of rules, but generally, if you’re travelling internationally from Australia, you’ll need to be vaccinated as well as show proof of a negative PCR test before you fly. Here’s a step by step guide on how to get a PCR test for travel.

melbourne pathology travel covid test

Get the correct test

In Australia, you cannot get a free COVID test for travel. Currently, there are two types of COVID tests in Australia (most pathology clinics also offer a third as a requirement for certain destinations, such as Japan). One is free and done at a COVID testing clinic, the other is specifically for travel (known as a RT-PCR test), and collected at a pathology clinic, costing between $100-$150. The clinical COVID test results sent via SMS are not accepted by airlines, whereas results from the travel-specific test will be sent as a PDF on an official letterhead via email or as a link to a secure document via SMS and likely also include a QR code.

Find a pathology clinic

Before you go down the Google vortex, Qantas has a list of pre-departure COVID test pathology clinics on their website , with prices. I have a Douglass Hanly Moir (Sonic Travel Testing) near me and find myself re-reading the ‘COVID tests for travel’ page many times before committing. The closest collection is a drive-through facility about 15 minutes away that I can just turn up to. It’s open seven days a week, which is helpful, as I need to get m y test on a Sunday. There’s an express clinic at Sydney airport, which offers results within an hour, but I decide not to risk it.

melbourne pathology travel covid test

Work out the ‘collection window’

I was travelling to Fiji, which requires a negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure. My flight was departing Sydney at 6.30am on December 1, so I would need to get my test after 6.30am on November 28. The Douglass Hanly Moir website has an inbuilt tool to help you work out the collection window, though it’s a little confusing.

melbourne pathology travel covid test

Pay for your test online

PCR tests for travel are prepaid, and the process is iron-tight to prevent anyone falsifying documents. After filling out a detailed online form (have your flight and passport details ready), and paying the $145, I’m sent an email with various codes and documents. Most importantly, the email includes a password-accessed request form as a PDF attachment and the body of the email has a pin I use to access my results once I receive the secure link via SMS. Flag this email, print off your request form and take it with you to the collection clinic, along with your passport.

melbourne pathology travel covid test

Getting the test

The week before I’m tested I find myself being extra cautious, avoiding big social gatherings and wearing a mask to my Pilates classes. When I arrive, there’s 20 or more cars ahead of me and a staff member is making sure we have our forms, but also has some spare to fill out if not. It takes about 45 minutes until it’s my turn and done within five minutes. Only 14 hours later, I get an SMS with negative results, then another SMS with a link to the document, which I access with my password and print off. At check-in, the Fiji Airways crew briefly check my printed PCR results and I’m on my way. It will take some getting used to, but I think we’ll all get the hang of it soon. The key is attention detail: make sure you double check your flight times and don’t leave collection too late.

Important note regarding the COVID-19 vaccination status of our people

As part of a leading healthcare company, Dorevitch Pathology recognises that we have a duty of care to protect both the public and our people, particularly vulnerable people, those at higher risk of more serious illness or who are unable to be vaccinated themselves.

To help keep our people, patients and communities safe, in addition to adhering to relevant public health orders, our parent company Healius has introduced a mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination Policy across its business, including Dorevitch Pathology. This policy covers all our people working for Dorevitch Pathology.

Our vaccination policy is in addition to a number of other COVID-19 safety measures we have put in place to ensure the health and wellbeing of our people and patients, including the use of personal protective equipment, such as masks and gowns, and enhanced cleaning of our facilities
