The Postal Service Will Go on Indefinite Hiatus After Wrapping ‘Give Up’ 20th Anniversary Tour

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

The Postal Service will go on an indefinite hiatus following the conclusion of the band’s co-headlining tour with Death Cab for Cutie .

The indie trio of Ben Gibbard , Jimmy Tamborello, and Jenny Lewis reunited last year for the joint tour with Death Cab (Gibbard’s other band), with both groups celebrating the 20th anniversaries of classic 2003 albums, The Postal Services Give Up and Death Cab’s Transatlanticism . The shows marked the Postal Service’s first in 10 years, following their previous reunion in 2013 .

After a run of 2023 dates, the Postal Service and Death Cab extended the tour into 2024 . It will finally wrap this weekend, with the final show taking place on Sept. 21 at the HFStival in Washington D.C.

Give Up remains the Postal Service’s only studio album — an early-Aughts indie classic that managed to crack through to the mainstream thanks to singles like “Such Great Heights” and “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.” The album eventually peaked at Number 45 on Billboard ’s albums chart and was certified platinum.

The only other release in the band’s catalogue is their 2020 live album, Everything Will Change . The album was preceded by a documentary/concert film of the same name, which was originally released in 2014 and captured two shows in Los Angeles during the band’s 2013 reunion trek.

The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie Give Up Transatlanticism Tour 2024: How To Get Tickets to New Dates

Em Casalena

The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie had quite a successful tour in 2023. Luckily for fans who may have missed them, the two co-headliners recently announced an extension of their current tour well into 2024. The tour will span multiple countries, including the United States, Canada, England, and Portugal. The only supporting acts announced thus far are the indie-rock group Slow Pulp.

Videos by American Songwriter

death cab postal service tour dates

The tour will be a celebration of Death Cab For Cutie’s hit album Transatlanticism from 2003 and The Postal Service’s Give Up , also released in 2003. Both bands are fronted by singer/songwriter and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard. The Give Up & Transatlanticism 20th Anniversary Tour will begin on April 23 in Atlanta, Georgia at the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre and close on August 31 in Lisbon, Portugal at Meo Kalorama. However, it is highly speculated that more tour dates will be announced in the coming months.

According to Benjamin Gibbard, the tour will celebrate the two albums that came out during his most creative professional year to date. “I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” said Gibbard in a press release for the tour, “The Postal Service record came out; Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”

Fans can still get their hands on tickets through StubHub , which is a great option if a particular tour date sells out or is close to selling out, as it is a guaranteed and protected third-party ticketing platform.

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The band has been lauded for their evocative lyrics and melodic compositions. Their music, often categorized under indie rock, features introspective themes and a subtle blend of acoustic and electronic elements. They’re known for Transantlanticism , but their recent 2022 release Asphalt Meadows was a hit with the single “Here To Forever”.

The Postal Service is a collaboration between Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and producer Jimmy Tamborello. The group emerged in 2001 as a groundbreaking electronica outfit. Their work is characterized by a fusion of indie pop and electronic music, marked by Gibbard’s reflective songwriting and Tamborello’s innovative production techniques. Give Up is their only studio album, though the band has also released a live album and a number of remixes.

The upcoming 20th Anniversary Tour represents a convergence of their respective musical journeys, offering fans an unparalleled experience that blends Death Cab for Cutie’s poignant indie rock with The Postal Service’s innovative electronic pop. Elder millennials (and fans of all other ages, of course) in need of a bit of nostalgia will not want to miss it.

Tour dates are selling out quickly, especially those in April. Grab your tickets while they’re hot!

The Postal Service & Death Cab for Cutie Tickets from $66

Celebrating two milestones - the twentieth-year anniversary of two influential records for The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Gibbard is on a roll, set to rock the stage. As 2023 marked 20 years of changing the game with "Give Up" and "Transatlanticism" - both shaping the sonic universe of new wave and rock, both bands are teaming up for a co-headlining tour. Originally set to stage celebrations throughout 2023, Gibbard just announced extended tour dates, stretching throughout 2024. As both records share their iconic attitudes, it's bound to be an unforgettable night.

The Postal Service has Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis on the team. They released "Give Up" back on February 18, 2003, with its certified-Gold single "Such Great Heights". It definitely soared to great heights as the album became a crowd favorite in the indie scene. It also featured other hits - "We Will Become Silhouettes", "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight", "Be Still My Heart", and "A Tattered Line of String", becoming staple favorites of early-2000s rock heads. The album kept rising and eventually became certified Platinum by the RIAA. Blending indie rock attitudes with new wave elements of synth-pop, it's a no-brainer that the record won everyone's hearts.

Gibbard's Death Cab for Cutie followed through with its own successful release - fourth LP "Transatlanticism". It marked their first mainstream breakthrough, debuting on the Billboard 200 chart. It also won itself a Gold certification from the RIAA. It featured the band's hit singles The New Year", "The Sound of Settling", and "Title and Registration". It isn't the band's most successful album, but it sure did pave the way for their amazing run and recognition in the indie-rock scene.

"I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003," Ben Gibbard shared. "The Postal Service record came out, Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year."

Celebrating 20 years of industry-defining albums and 20 years of rockin' moments around the world, Ben Gibbard is stoked to keep "Give Up" and "Transatlanticism" on the road. Don't miss out by booking your tickets now!

The Postal Service are going on indefinite hiatus after their ‘Transatlanticism/Give Up’ tour ends

"We will see you all again somewhere down the road"

Jenny Lewis and Ben Gibbard of The Postal Service perform

The Postal Service have announced that they are going on an indefinite hiatus following the conclusion of their current tour – find out more below.

  • READ MORE: Inside Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service’s anniversary tour: “It’s been more informative than nostalgic”

The Ben Gibbard -led band announced the hiatus on social media last night (September 16), confirming that they’re going on a break after their final show at the HFStival in Washington, DC on September 21. You can get tickets to their final show here .

Ben wrote in a statement: “As we bring the ‘ Transatlanticism/Give Up ‘ tour to a close, I want you all to know that getting the opportunity to perform these two albums live has been one of the greatest thrills and honors of my entire life. On behalf of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service; Thank you so much for coming out and singing along.”

Gibbard signed off: “We will see you all again somewhere down the road.”

Gibbard’s two bands The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie have been on a joint co-headlining tour to celebrate the 20th anniversaries of ‘Transatlanticism’ and ‘Give Up’ since 2023 .

‘Give Up’ marks The Postal Service’s only studio album to date, while the tour is the second time the group have reformed; they first reunited in 2013 for the album’s 10th anniversary. In 2020, the band released their only live album, ‘Everything Will Change’.

Recommended

The Postal Service’s hiatus isn’t entirely surprising though, as Gibbard has been vocal about the band likely never releasing new material. He said in a chat with NME last month : “I think the main reason that a second Postal Service record has never come to fruition – and will never come to fruition – the time commitments that Death Cab ended up taking, which really started with ‘Transatlanticism’, haven’t really ever let up. There’s just not enough time, let alone creative juices flowing, to make a suitable follow-up [to ‘Give Up’]. I think anything that we would attempt to make at this point would be thoroughly disappointing.

“The stakes are just lower [in Death Cab] when you’re putting an album out every two to three years. If people don’t like this one, there’ll be another one later. But after 20 years, there is no way we could ever follow that up in a way that would be satisfying to people. I would rather have all my focus on Death Cab than be watering both projects down. I just don’t have the capacity to do both. Some might argue I barely have the capacity to do one!”

Meanwhile, Death Cab For Cutie released their newest album ‘ Asphalt Meadows ‘ two years ago. In a  four-star review of the LP ,  NME  called ‘Asphalt Meadows’ “as assured and stately as you’d expect and hope for from indie veterans now 10 albums and 25 years into their career, but this beaut is as consistent and satisfying as their early-mid ‘00s career peak. Here are a band still very much in love with what they do.”

At D.C.'s HFStival, same bands, same fans, all just a little older

A crowd of about 25,000 reveled in the nostalgia at a festival headlined by Death Cab for Cutie and the final live performance by the Postal Service.

This was your father’s HFStival.

The raucous, annual day-long concert and mosh-fest at RFK Stadium in the 1990s and 2000s was resurrected at Nationals Park on Saturday, with many of the same bands pounding out the same hits to many of the same fans in a crowd of about 25,000, headlined by Death Cab for Cutie and the final live performance by the Postal Service.

“It’s like a high school reunion, it has that vibe,” said Justin Ayala, 46, of York, Pa. “The people I went with to concerts back in the day are probably here.”

“This is our fourth HFStival,” said A. Jay Popoff, the lead singer of Lit, kicking off the festivities under the noon sun — an HFStival tradition. “We’re honored to be here.”

The average age of the Saturday patron was roughly 48, according to an unscientific survey. Many had attended HFStivals when they were held at RFK, or Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, or M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, headlined by bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Ramones. Saturday’s attendees said they were in their teens then. Articles about the HFStivals of the ’90s quoted 25-year-olds who felt too old to be there.

Not this time. “It’s an oldies tour,” said Carl Eichenwald, 64, as popular ’90s bands Tonic and Filter played short sets. He and Andrea Medici, 58, used to walk to RFK and recalled seeing Iggy Pop and INXS there at the first RFK show. The fest was held every summer from 1990 to 2006, often in the blazing heat of a D.C. summer, with a second stage set up in the vast asphalt parking lot of RFK, where bands like Ben Folds Five and Guided by Voices played before reaching greater fame.

There was no tailgate scene outside Nationals Park and no second stage. But sound technology has improved greatly since the original HFStivals, and Nationals Park delivered a far cleaner acoustic experience than RFK ever dreamed of. The radio station WHFS no longer exists, but former DJs such as Bob Waugh and Gina Crash were recruited to introduce the bands. Tickets were $99.10, to honor the modern rock station’s place on the dial. (The original, groundbreaking WHFS was at 102.3, so that’s a $3 savings.)

Many of the fans said they were most interested to see the Violent Femmes from Milwaukee, who attracted a vociferous crowd to the front of the stage as they pumped out “Blister in the Sun” and other hits, with drummer John Sparrow sometimes using a Weber grill for percussion. Sarah Bryant, 47, and Dan Kendall, 50, of Springfield, Va., said they saw the Femmes play at Lake Fairfax in 1991.

But 33 years later, the online discussion they followed about Saturday’s show focused on how late it would go and when the most desired bands would be going on, because babysitters had to be arranged and paid. “Is this going to be the last time I go to a day-long music festival,” Kendall wondered aloud. “I’m going to be 51 this year.”

“Nostalgia” was often cited as a motivator for attendees, including Thomas Rachko, 31, of the District, thinking "back to the early 2000s, my high school years, when I played a song by Incubus on guitar.” Bands at Nationals Park Saturday such as Incubus, Bush and Jimmy Eat World saw their popularity peak in the 2000s, but have continued to tour ever since.

“I grew up listening to this music with my dad,” said Hannah Good, 29, of Arlington. “I’ve got some of his old vinyl now.”

A number of rock “veterans” brought their kids to the show, and for some of the kids, it wasn’t their first rock rodeo. Audrey Adams, 40, brought her husband and four kids to the show, including Maeve, 10, who first saw the Violent Femmes at 9:30 Club when she was eight. After that, everyone wanted in.

“I made a playlist for the kids,” Adams said. “I get to relive my youth in music and share with my children, who are solidly enthusiastic.”

Ali Jost of D.C. brought her 9-year-old son Bennett, and Janis Bowdler of Takoma Park, Md., brought her 9-year-old daughter Siena. “This is part of their musical education,” Bowdler said. “I can’t let them out in the world without knowing Jimmy Eat World and Violent Femmes.

“We also want them to know that moms are cool too.”

The show was promoted by Seth Hurwitz’s I.M.P. Concerts, but Hurwitz said the idea came from the home baseball team. “The Nats came to us and said, ‘We want to do a ’90s festival.’ It was their idea. I was like, ‘Yeah, the HFStival. Why don’t we just do that?’”

Hurwitz promoted two HFStivals at Merriweather Post Pavilion in 2010 and 2011, and brought the label back “so people would understand what it was immediately. People remember this thing so fondly.” He said Audacy, which runs a string of radio stations, owned the intellectual property of the WHFS trademark but granted it to I.M.P. in exchange for space at the show.

One problem with arranging the show was that the Nats and Hurwitz didn’t begin to seek bands until March. “All of these bands had already made plans,” Hurwitz said, “and went out of their way to be here.”

In addition to the Femmes, four bands at Saturday’s event played previous HFStivals: Bush, Lit, Incubus and Filter.

“This means a lot,” said Jim Adkins, the lead singer and guitarist of Jimmy Eat World, which was making its HFStival debut. “It’s a huge deal. I’m very humbled to be here performing.”

The concert also featured goofy events in the old HFStival spirit, such as a cupcake eating contest (the winner ate 12 in 2 1/2 minutes) and a Guitar Hero competition. Unlike the old HFStivals, there were no reports of problems with overheated spectators or fighting as of early Saturday evening.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
