For instance, if you’re traveling between the U.S. and Europe and paying in cash, it's cheaper to book a round-trip flight. But if you’re paying for that same flight with miles, the price of two one-way tickets will most often be the same as a round-trip flight (though the taxes paid may vary).

There are other considerations besides just price when comparing round-trip versus one-way flights. Travelers might be surprised to find that booking a round-trip award flight could lead to issues if you have a change in plans mid-trip.

Here's a look at options to weigh when booking round-trip versus one-way flights and answers to some frequently asked questions.

When you book a round-trip flight, it means you travel from Destination A to Destination B and you return back to Destination A from Destination B. Both flights are booked as one ticket.

So when you’re purchasing the ticket, you select your origin, destination, departure and return date. You make one payment, whether it's with cash or miles.

A one-way flight, in contrast, is a ticket booked with no return. So you’re only booking a flight from Destination A to Destination B. You can purchase a second, separate ticket from Destination B back to Destination A (should you so choose). One-way flights can be booked with cash or miles.

These types of flights are a good option for those who don’t know their return date, are only traveling in one direction or booking an open-jaw itinerary .

When booking flights paid in cash, our recommendation is pretty simple: Book the option that's cheapest for your trip. If a round-trip flight is cheaper than two one-way flights, there's no reason to book two one-way flights.

If two one-way flights are the same price as a round-trip, it might make sense to book the one-way flight (as long as you don’t mind keeping track of the two separate reservations). Even though many airlines have eliminated change fees , it's much easier to change — or even cancel — a flight when there’s only one flight on the reservation to make a change to.

If you’re flying domestically in the U.S., the cost of two one-way flights will usually be the same as a round trip; however, when flying internationally, it can be much more expensive to book two one-way tickets.

In this example flight search on American Airlines , booking two one-way tickets from Newark to Miami will cost $154 for the outgoing flight and $124 for the return, for a total of $278.

Take a look at this flight search from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt, Germany, on United Airlines . If you were to book the flights as two one-way tickets, it would cost you $3,110.

However, if you book these same flights as part of a round-trip ticket, you’d have to pay $1,783, representing a significant savings over booking two one-way flights.

If you're planning on using points and miles to book award flights, you have a different set of factors to consider. In the case of award travel, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award.

Two one-way awards offer more flexibility

Most U.S. airlines have dropped change fees on both award and paid flights. So, if the price is the same, consider booking two one-way awards instead of a round-trip award to gain extra flexibility. Keep in mind that if you book a round trip, depending on the airline, you may have difficulty getting your miles redeposited if you need to change your award ticket after taking the first leg of the flight.

For example, if you cancel a United award flight midtrip, you'll retain the miles as a future flight credit. While the miles won't be refunded to your account, you'll have the chance to use them in the future.

Watch for higher taxes and fees when booking two one-way awards

When considering whether to book round-trip versus one-way awards, it's important to price out both options — particularly when flying overseas. Some airlines charge higher taxes and fees for awards that originate in certain regions of the world.

Delta SkyMiles is infamous for charging higher fees for award flights that originate in Europe. Also, particularly for international flights, Delta will often price round-trip award flights at less than the cost of two one-way awards.

For example, take a round-trip award from New York to Paris. Delta charges 50,000 SkyMiles plus $85 in taxes and fees for a round-trip main cabin award.

However, if you book the same flights as two one-way awards, you'll pay a total of 74,000 SkyMiles plus roughly $220 in taxes and fees. The outbound award costs 37,000 miles plus $6 in taxes and fees. Then, you'll need to pay another 37,000 SkyMiles plus around $220 to fly home.

In a situation like this, it makes sense to book a round-trip award. You'll save on miles and out-of-pocket costs.

Consider change fees on award flights

Most U.S. airlines have eliminated change fees on both paid flights and award tickets. However, that's not the case with all mileage programs. If you're booking through a mileage program that charges change fees, you may want to book a round-trip award to reduce the fees you could pay if you need to cancel the trip.

Say you're considering flying to Europe to take a cruise from Budapest to Munich. One might assume that your only options are to:

Book a round-trip flight into one of the cities plus book a one-way intra-Europe flight between them.

Book two one-way flights — one-way into Budapest and one-way back from Munich.

However, there's a third option: booking an "open-jaw" flight . Many airlines will let you book a flight into Budapest and a flight back from Munich on the same ticket. Rather than pricing these flights as two one-way flights, the airline generally prices the flights similar to a round-trip.

If you're using airline miles to book these flights, check to see if it's cheaper to book two one-way awards or an open-jaw award. As outlined in the Delta example above, award flights originating in Europe can have much higher taxes and fees. So it might make sense to book the two award segments together as a multicity award.

In the past, airlines charged more for booking two one-way flights rather than a round-trip on the same route. However, this isn't the case anymore on most domestic flights and even some international flights — mostly thanks to competition from low-cost carriers.

In short, airlines charge more for one-way flights on the routes when they can get away with doing so. If only one airline is operating a particular route, it might increase the price of one-way flights to generate more revenue from business travelers and others that are willing to pay more for the nonstop flight.

However, when there's competition from other airlines, the cost of one-way flights often drops to compete with the other airlines serving that route.

Booking a round-trip flight can be cheaper than booking one-way tickets on the same flights. Before booking two one-way flights, check the round-trip price to see if it's cheaper. Even if you're flying out of a different city than you're flying into, booking a so-called "open-jaw" flight could be much cheaper than booking two one-way flights.

Most U.S. airline loyalty programs will charge the same number of miles whether you book round-trip or two one-way flights. Because of this, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award to get flexibility in case you need to change or cancel plans.

And while there are die-hard passengers on either side of the aisle, one-way ticket fanatics, and the always-prepared round-trippers, there never seems to be a consensus on which ticket type is optimal.

When are one-way tickets cheaper?

Although it's not always the case, one-way tickets are more often than not favorable when using frequent flyer or credit card point redemptions. Since point redemptions or bookings are strategically quoted within a fixed range of prices, passengers often grab the opportunity to book two one-way tickets instead of a single round-trip since the number of points required would not necessarily change.

The primary hassles in these cases would be for passengers to keep track of two or more separate reservations and airline schedules and hope that there are little to no flight delays during the entire journey, as missing the second leg onwards does spell disaster for the remainder as there is a risk of being offloaded by the other airlines for the later flights if passengers fail to show up on time.

We Found the Optimal Way to Pack for a 3-Day Trip With Just a ‘Personal Item’

As a budget traveler, I’m no stranger to sacrificing little luxuries in order to secure cheaper airline tickets. To save a few bucks, I’ve given up legroom, sacrificed picking my seats ahead of time, and flown at less-desirable hours. But the hardest thing to swallow as a frugal flier was not being able to bring a carry-on suitcase with me.

Airlines like Spirit and Frontier (in the United States) and Ryanair (in Europe) are known for their fees for extra bags. But other airlines, including United and JetBlue, have also started to introduce carry-on fees for basic economy tickets on certain flights—in other words, anything that’s not a personal item. (A personal item is the bag that airlines let you shove under the seat in front of you. All airline tickets include this free bag with your ticket, no matter which class you fly, at least for now.)

It’s already hard enough to pack for a whole weekend in a standard carry-on, so squeezing everything into a personal-item bag is even trickier—especially since not all personal items (and standards set by airlines) are created equal. But, in general, the average size of a personal-item bag (or a piece of under-seat luggage) is roughly 18 by 14 by 8 inches. And if you want to make the most of those limited dimensions, Kit Dillon, senior staff writer and Wirecutter travel expert, recommends using a bag that is as rectangular as possible, so it’s easier to slide under the seat. After your bag is packed, however, you still have to make sure that it fits the dimensions outlined by the airline you’re traveling with.

At Wirecutter, we’ve been putting all kinds of luggage, backpacks, and packing solutions to the test in real-world travel environments for at least a decade now. And we’ve spent lots of time thinking about how much can be packed into each bag we test. We’ve thoroughly tested packing cubes, and we’ve investigated ways to maximize space while packing. I set out to find personal-item bags to pack for a weekend, based on Wirecutter’s bag and packing recommendations. I also attempted to fit the same amount of clothes and toiletries into two personal-item bags, using a variety of packing methods and hacks. It turns out that with the right packing method, you can take a lot with you, but this requires a packing list—as well as a willingness to keep that list short.

The bags I picked and packed

We have a guide to personal-item bags , with four rigorously tested picks. I decided to test Away’s The Everywhere Bag, one of our sleek-looking personal-item recommendations , because our staffers found that it could work for an overnight trip. So I wanted to see if it could work for a multi-day trip. This bag was also one of the more affordable recommendations, so a budget traveler might consider buying it if it would save them money on multiple trips.

A backpack is another common personal-item bag, especially for those looking to use what they already have. (In fact, the first time I had to travel with just a personal item, I relied on an old-school backpack that sort of, kind of , got the job done.) Our carry-on backpack picks are too large to be used as a personal item, so I also tested the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L , from our guide to the best backpack for students . Its dimensions are in line with most airlines’ personal-item-bag measurement restrictions , and it’s something that a student or a fellow budget traveler might already have lying around.

What I packed

To put these two bags to the test, I packed what I’d bring on a two-night, three-day weekend trip with only a personal item. I came up with a hypothetical packing list as I planned for an ideal, two- or three-day trip to a warm destination in the summer. I tried to be practical, planning my outfits and packing items I could re-wear or mix and match. I also planned for a few “if” scenarios, like if it got cold at night or if I found myself going out to eat at a nicer restaurant. I cut down my toiletries to just the essentials and assumed my accommodations would have a towel available to me. This list was also designed with the idea that I’d wear chunky shoes or a light jacket on the flight, so I didn’t have to waste space in my bag.

We packed, unpacked, and re-packed each bag four times, trying out different packing methods. We also took care not to overpack a bag, so that it wasn’t too bulky to be squeezed under an airline seat. To test the bags’ height and bulkiness after packing, I checked their dimensions with a tape measure. I also applied pressure to each bag, to see whether I could squish it down further to mimic stuffing it under a seat.

Packing method 1: packing cubes

We folded, rolled, and packed as many items as possible into our top-pick packing cubes , the Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set . The cardigan, jeans, sandals, cross-body bag, wallet, and compression sack did not fit into the packing cubes. But we still attempted to add these items into the bag after the cubes were packed.

Method 2: compression sack and packing cubes

We squeezed as much as possible into our staff-favorite compression sack , the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Compression Sack . We kept the undergarments in the extra-small packing cube, and we used the medium-size cube to hold the jeans, dopp kit, and a pair of shorts. The sandals, hairbrush, and cross-body bag did not fit into either compressible option.

Method 3: compression sack

I also tried using the compression sack as the main compression option. I kept the undergarments in the extra-small packing cube and used a clear, smaller bag as a toiletry kit, instead of the regular-size dopp kit. In the end, the difference in how much I packed with method two and method three was fairly insignificant—you’re probably better off using either the compression sack or the packing cubes, but not both together.

Method 4: minimal to no compression

Keeping only the undergarments in the extra-small packing cube, I folded or rolled the rest of the packing list and fit those items into the bags to the best of my ability.

Away’s The Everywhere Bag is a true personal item

In our guide to under-seat luggage, Kit wrote that Away’s The Everywhere Bag could be used as an overnight bag. And when I talked with him about it, he told me he imagined someone would use it to hold one change of clothes and basic toiletries. So I went into testing with the preconceived notion that a bag this sleek, with this many internal pockets, could not possibly be big enough for a weekend trip. I was pleased to find I was wrong.

This bag’s large interior pocket and laptop sleeve can be used to hold a surprising number of essentials. As a shoulder-carry bag, it might get a little heavy if you overpack.

Buying Options

Away’s The Everywhere Bag fit the most during the packing-cube test, but it was a tight squeeze. When packing with the packing cubes, I was able to fit nearly everything on my list, except for the jeans and sweater (which could easily be removed from the packing list or worn while in transit). When I packed the bag this way, it bulged in ways that could make it hard to fit under an airline seat with narrower or shorter measurements. Ultimately, however, this bag could work surprisingly well for airlines with more-forgiving under-seat measurements.

The compression sack fit a significant amount, but it wasted space in the bag. Using the stuff sack, I was missing the jeans, hairbrush, and cross-body bag, and I had to use the slimmed-down version of my toiletry kit. This packing method ended up wasting space in the bag—since the smaller pocket (designed to be a laptop pocket) went completely unused—and the bag bulged to the sides a little too much.

Packing with no compressible items worked the best, as did a slimmed-down packing list. Packing the bag without using any form of compression was the most convenient method. I had to cut back on toiletries significantly, and I had to leave the bulky items behind or make a plan to wear them on the plane. But when packed this way, the bag was at its slimmest, the lightest to carry, and the easiest to compress under a narrow seat.

The bag is sturdy. The bag’s nylon, waterproof outer shell felt thicker and less flexible than the Patagonia bag’s shell—and it also felt more luxurious. Though it seems sturdy and tough enough to protect your things, this bag might be harder to fit under an airline seat when packed to its maximum capacity.

It isn’t comfortable to carry on its own when it’s filled to the brim. The Everywhere Bag surprised me with how much it could hold, but just because it can hold a lot, that doesn’t mean you should stuff that much in it. Due to this bag’s shoulder-carry design (short, looped straps and a detachable padded shoulder strap for cross-body wear), you need to be mindful of how heavy it gets; this bag does not offer the same ergonomic, weight-distributing features as the Patagonia backpack. When it’s paired with a rolling bag, you can use the trolley sleeve, but without the trolley sleeve, you have to be able to sling the bag over your shoulder with ease.

After pushing this bag to its limits, we found that it definitely lived up to Kit’s claim of being good for an overnight trip. And if you’re willing to pack very light, it could possibly work for a two-night trip, too.

This backpack packs it all—and then some

Though we don’t recommend any backpacks as a personal item in our guide, Kit encouraged me to give a backpack a try. Our carry-on backpack picks don’t meet personal-item dimensions, so I picked a backpack we recommend for students . I went into testing assuming—and hoping—that when it was packed smartly, this backpack could be the ideal bag for personal-item-only travel. It turns out that this backpack worked even better than I’d hoped it would.

Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L

Ergonomic hero.

With its padded mesh straps and back panels, this sporty-looking pack makes heavy loads feel lighter and comfier to carry. This bag doesn’t have a lot of interior organization, which is handy when you’re packing for a trip.

When packing the Patagonia backpack, I put my pair of sandals at the bottom of the main compartment every time. From there I arranged and rearranged all of the items I wanted to pack. Since this bag lacks a lot of interior zippers and pockets, the main compartment is spacious and can be packed almost like a suitcase. Its contoured shoulder straps and padded back panels are designed to be ergonomically comfortable, and the bag has a removable sternum strap, to help stabilize it on your body while taking pressure off your spine.

Packing cubes and a roomy backpack are a perfect match. I was able to fit everything on the packing list inside the bag, and I even had room to spare. In the main compartment, I was able to pack the full-size dopp kit, sandals, all of the packing cubes, and the jeans and sweater (which did not fit into the cubes).

The exterior pocket allowed me to pack something extra. There’s a roomy pocket on the face of the pack that opens vertically, and I was able to use that space to stash my wallet, as well as a paperback book. When I set out to pack in just a personal-item bag, I accepted that I wouldn’t be able to fit any sort of entertainment. Since everything was so well compressed in the packing cubes, I didn’t have to use the outer pocket as a key packing compartment, so I had room for the book.

Removing the padded laptop sleeve freed up more space. Though the laptop compartment went mostly unused in every test, removing the padded laptop sleeve allowed me to fit more in the main compartment. I used the laptop compartment to slip in the extra, completely flat cross-body bag (but it could have fit in the outer pocket if needed).

The compression sack worked, but not as well. When I used the compression sack as the main compressing device, I was still able to fit everything. But the bag was bulkier and would likely have been harder to squeeze under a seat, especially on an airline with shorter height or narrower width measurements. This meant I had to cut back on toiletries. In a clear plastic bag, I packed the toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, lens wipes, and medication.

Packing the bag without any compression made for a tight squeeze, but it could still work. Without using packing cubes or a compression sack, I was still able to fit the entire packing list, but the contents didn’t fit as nicely. The hairbrush did not fit in the main compartment; if I’d insisted on keeping it, it probably would’ve had to sit in a side pocket meant for a water bottle. I would have to leave the book behind (which is fine), and I would probably opt to use a slimmed-down toiletry kit.

The bag is spacious and durable. Part of what stood out about this bag’s performance in testing was how roomy the main compartment was and how tough the bag felt. The outer shell is made from abrasion- and water-resistant recycled polyester. So while the shell is light and thin, it still feels durable. Therefore I believe this bag can handle being squashed under a tight airline seat, and it feels like it was meant for the task.

Pack lighter, regardless of which bag you use

Traveling with just one bag will keep you unburdened—moving through the airport with only a bag slung over your shoulder can help you breeze through security. But you’ll need to be strategic about your packing list and the compromises you’re willing to make. The truth is, the easiest way to pack in a smaller bag is to pack fewer things.

“It all comes down to how much you’re packing,” Kit said. “If you’re trying to use tricks, then you’ve overpacked already.” And no amount of folding, rolling, twisting, or squeezing will let you fit a substantial amount more in the same amount of space.

It’s important to note that packing this light is a lot easier during the summer. If you’re traveling in the winter, it might be worth it to pay that extra $75 for the included carry-on, so you can pack what you need to stay warm and safe.

SUMMER HEAT & HUMIDITY

The Heat Advisory continues through 8pm. Between highs in the 90s and extreme humidity, the heat index will hover near 100 degrees this afternoon. The Cape, Islands and South Coast will run a little cooler but still extremely sticky. Stay hydrated and take breaks as needed today.

Most towns will stay dry, hazy, and partly cloudy today. Stay alert for a few thunderstorms north and west of Boston midday and afternoon. Even the smallest shower will produce torrential rainfall, lightning, and gusty wind. Some of these storms may become severe with damaging gusts or an isolated tornado, particularly in western New England, northern New England, and New York where the remnants of Beryl will enhance the potential. A Flood Watch will be in effect through Thursday morning north of Manchester, NH.

STAYING UNSETTLED

Although the middle and the end of the week will not be quite as hot, dew points in the 70s will keep humidity sky high.

Deep tropical moisture will surge up the east coast into New England for days. There will be plenty of dry stretches, but occasional downpours are possible through Saturday. Where and when it rains, those showers will pack a punch. The best chance for rain is currently timing out as Thursday with a cold front slowly moving across the region and Friday night to Saturday. Localized flooding will remain a concern as long as this saturated air sits in place.

Sunday is the pick of the weekend. It will run dry and partly sunny. Although humidity will break slightly, it will stay very hot with high in the lower 90s.

The Danish capital might not be what comes to mind when you think of a cheap holiday - but if you're willing to help the community, you can earn yourself freebies and discounts. 

Under a new scheme being trialled, visitors to Copenhagen can claim anything from a free lunch or glass or wine to a free kayak rental. 

They can earn these freebies by completing tasks such as litter picking, travelling by public transport, cycling or volunteering in an urban garden. 

The CopenPay scheme is being trialled from 15 July until 11 August. 

Twenty-four attractions in the city are signed up to take part, including the Museum of Copenhagen - where you can claim a free coffee if you've walked there, travelled by bike or used public transport. 

On certain dates, you can earn a free one-hour GoBoat cruise around the city, or a 45-minute free bike ride with Donkey Republic. 

Officials have said if the trial is deemed a success, CopenPay could be rolled out throughout the year.

Yesterday it was the cost of tea that was on the rise, now it seems coffee isn't safe from imminent price hikes either... 

Caffeine lovers have been warned that the price of a cup of coffee could keep increasing for at least another year. 

Industry giant Lavazza said "very challenging headwinds" meant UK prices will not drop until the middle of 2025 at the earliest.

Poor harvests in Brazil and Vietnam, geopolitical conflict and supply chain disruption have all contributed to costs reaching record levels, said the group's chairman, Giuseppe Lavazza.

On Monday, prices reached an all-time high of £3,356 a tonne.

"We have never seen such a spike in price as the trend right now," said Mr Lavazza.

For consumers, this has meant the price of a 1kg bag of beans has already risen by 15% in a year. 

Mr Lavazza said this could increase by 20% to 25% over the next 12 months.

Meanwhile, a flat white at the firm's flagship cafe in London now costs £3.50 to take away or £5.50 to have in.

"We have faced very, very strong headwinds. I don't see any reason why coffee prices will go down," Mr Lavazza added. 

The UK retail coffee market is worth £1.3bn, growing by 3.9% year-on-year and driven by price inflation of 3.8%, according to Nielsen figures. 

Yesterday, the Indian Tea Board warned average tea prices could rise by up to 20% after extreme weather caused poor harvests. 

In the last week of June, the typical price of Indian tea leaves rose to more than £2 per kg, it said.

The UK's biggest supermarket chain has told customers its Express stores across England will close at 7.30pm instead of the usual 10pm or 11pm if the Three Lions reach the final of the Euros. 

It said the decision had been taken to allow its staff to get home or to the pub in time for kick-off at 8pm. 

Employees who do not want to watch the match will be paid as normal, it said. 

Stores will be open as normal the following morning. 

England are playing the Netherlands this evening in the semi-finals. 

If they get through, they will face Spain in the final - and will have the chance to become the first England men's team to win a major tournament since the World Cup in 1966. 

HSBC is increasing the amount it will lend for most mortgages.

At the same time, the bank is ditching its 65% and 80% loan-to-value offers.

The maximum amount of money that can be borrowed on an 85% LTV has risen the most, ballooning by 150%.

Here are the changes in full:

• 95% LTV: From £500,000 to £570,000
• 90% LTV: From £550,000 to £750,000
• 85% LTV: From £750,000 to £2m (or £1m for flats)
• 75% LTV: From £2m to £3m
• 70% LTV: Increased to lending over £3m

"This could make the difference between someone being able to buy the property they want or need, or having to compromise by buying a smaller property with fewer bedrooms, or maybe in an area that is outside the catchment area of their preferred school for their children," said Chris Pearson, HSBC UK's head of intermediary mortgages.

Campaigners are launching a major new four-day working week trial in the hopes of winning over the new government.

Participating companies will begin the scheme in November before the findings are presented to the government next summer.

Some 54 of the 61 companies that took part in the first 4 Day Week Campaign pilot continued to use it after the study finished.

Director Joe Ryle told  The Guardian he was optimistic a Labour government would be more receptive than the Conservatives.

"Change is in the air and we hope to see employers embracing this change by signing up to our pilot," he said. 

"The nine-to-five, five-day working week was invented 100 years ago and is no longer fit for purpose. We are long overdue an update."

The quality of customer service is deteriorating across the UK's biggest companies, according to a new report.

A survey of 60,000 people about 275 major firms found satisfaction levels were at their lowest since 2010.

Customers reported a decline in complaints handling, as well as worse customer experience and a more negative view of company ethics, the Institute of Customer Service found.

"The current outlook isn't where we need it to be, despite our research showing that higher levels of customer satisfaction correlate with financial stability and growth," said Jo Causon, chief executive of the Institute of Customer Service.

"Business leaders need to understand the evolving needs and expectations of their customers, developing their organisations' approach accordingly to unlock the sustainable growth the economy needs."

The ICS's Customer Satisfaction Index rates satisfaction on a scale out of 100, with the overall score across all 275 companies standing at 75.8, a drop of 0.8 points on a year ago and 2.6 points below its high of 78.4 in July 2022.

Utility providers were the worst offenders, with a satisfaction rating of 69.8 out of 100 - though it was the only industry to see a slight uptick (0.3 points).

Digging into the data further, and water companies - plagued by sewage spills and rising bills - were the most disappointing among utilities, dropping to 69.5 points.

Tourism, leisure, retail, banks, automotives, insurance, public services and transport industries all saw a decline.

Satisfaction fell fastest over the last year in the telecommunications and media sector, down 2.1 points to 73.3/100.

On the other end of the scale, Timpson, Nationwide and John Lewis scored highest among individual companies - between 85 and 86 points.

Taylor Swift, Elon Musk and Martin Lewis are among celebrities whose identities are commonly misused by scammers, data suggests.

Martin Lewis's face and name have been used to steal £20m over the last two years, MoneySavingExpert found after analysing Action Fraud figures.

Some £500,000 was reported lost to one scam featuring Mr Lewis.

"It's likely that the criminals pumping out these scam ads effectively use their own in-house dark web digital marketing teams, researching which celebrities and advert types get the best click through rates, and honing the way they work to be able to attract more victims," said Mr Lewis.

"If it's an ad with me in, it's always a scam, as I don't do adverts."

The King, Jeremy Clarkson and Rishi Sunak have also been used by scammers. 

MoneySavingExpert asked Action Fraud to supply the data based on a list of celebrities it had created after asking people on social media who they had seen in scam ads. 

"Topping this list is about the worst compliment I've ever had," said Mr Lewis.

Ticket scams are rife as criminals seek to cash in on the popularity of Swift's Era's tour.

Fans have lost out on an estimated £1m since UK tickets for her tour went on sale last July, according to data published by Lloyds Bank.

Mentions of cryptocurrency, investing, retirement planning and promises to get rich quick are also particular warning signs to look out for in scam ads, MoneySavingExpert warned.

The pastries are also amazing - using high-quality butter and the chocolate used in the pain au chocolate makes it one of my best sweet treats in the city. On top of all of this, their coffee is some of the best in London.

2. Tachbrook Street Market  in Pimlico

This market is really affordable and convenient and away from the hustle and bustle of Victoria Station. 

I used to go with my wife who loves spicy food, especially to a Thai food stand on the left part of the market which is a must-try. 

If you come back often enough as I do, they sometimes give a nice discount! 

Authentic Thai food made with love, available for less than £10 for a substantial portion.

3. Bar Italia in Soho

Offers great Italian coffee with authentic products from different regions of Italy. 

You can try different sandwiches and they have an excellent burrata. They serve real coffee, how it should be made.

What is your "go-to" cheap eat to cook at home when you have a night in?

I would suggest a nice vegetable appetiser, something fresh and flavourful which is cheap and tasty as long as it's seasonal. 

At home, when the first heirloom tomatoes come into season, I slice them and season with olive oil, fresh herbs and some anchovies on top - seasoning generously is a must! 

Try to buy smart, local and according to the season - that's one of my favourite tips.

I also recommend a nice pasta when cooking at home, using a brand called Rummo (note from Money team: their range is available from Ocado for around £2), served alongside delicious seafood. 

Go early to Billingsgate fish market, to buy quality seafood direct from fisherman. It's also usually cheaper and always fresher. Plus, you can negotiate a bit!

A stronger open for the FTSE 100 today after financial and energy stocks dragged yesterday. 

The index was 0.3% up at 8,161 following the 0.7% hit of the previous session.

Part of that decline was a double-edged sword as it was linked to lower oil prices.

In better news for drivers, Brent crude touched $84 a barrel and was a further 0.7% down as some market concerns over tight supplies eased.

Chinese economic data was also seen as pouring cold water on prospects for higher demand in the world's second-biggest economy.

Weaker profit estimates from BP also led the market down.

Companies reporting on their progress today included JD Wetherspoon.

The pub giant reported a 5.8% rise in comparable sales over the 10 weeks to 7 July.

It was likely aided by Euro 2024 and in spite of unseasonably wet weather, which has been blamed for hitting consumer spending more widely.

Its shares were 0.1% down in response.

The performance likely reflected the fact that the sales growth figure was lower than the 11% rise achieved in the same period last year.

Wetherspoons also highlighted cost pressures from wages and some products.

We've asked four beauty experts to give us their top affordable dupes for high-end products. Here's what they said (before one of them reveals the product you should never skimp on)...

It's a dupe for... Drunk Elephant's D-Bronzi drops, £34

"A nourishing tinted serum for a sun-kissed glow," she says. 

Just add one to three drops to your moisturiser, face oil or body cream.

It's a dupe for...  Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter, at £39

"A multi-purpose, liquid glow booster that gives your complexion a soft-focus social filter effect IRL," says Suzanne. 

Wear on its own for sheer coverage, under foundation as a luminous base, as a highlighter or mixed with foundation for a dewy glow.

"A gel-based, hydrating face primer that smooths skin while gripping your make-up," Suzanne says.

For Joyce, she'll often go for the high-end brands over dupes - but there was one product that she thought was even better than the original. 

Here are her picks... 

Revolution Pro CC Perfecting Skin Enhancer, £10

It's a dupe for... IT Cosmetics CC+ Nude Glow, £37

The IT Cosmetics product is Joyce's go-to, but she says the Revolution version makes for a "very good" dupe. 

She says it gives a "nice glow without being shiny, because in the summer we don't want to be caked in make-up". 

It is worth noting that the IT Cosmetics version includes SPF 40, whereas the Revolution one does not. 

Apply before foundation for an added glow. 

Boots Glow Essence Serum, £5 

It's a dupe for... Glossier Future Dew Facial Oil Serum Hybrid, £30

There's quite a difference in price here, and Joyce says the Boots version gives a "nice sheen" under your foundation. 

However, she notes the Glossier product has a more golden tint. 

Massage two to three drops onto your skin before moisturising. 

Avon Radiance Ritual Touch Of Gold Body Oil, £5

It's a dupe for... Sol De Janeiro GlowMotions Glow Body Oil, £35

For added glow, massage into the skin and do not rinse - or you can use it as a bath oil. 

NYX Professional Makeup Fat Oil Lip Drip Lip Gloss, £7.99

It's a dupe for... Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil, £32

"To be honest, I prefer the Fat Oil to the Dior one," says Joyce, picking it out as her favourite dupe. 

"It lasted longer on my lips. I didn't have to top it up as quickly. I like the sheen of it. The colour was lovely," she raves. 

Sue Moxley , beauty expert  

Sue believes you don't have to spend a fortune to get quality products - and she's a fan of "good old" Revlon and L'Oreal. 

Revolution Fix and Glow Setting Spray, £8.99

It's a dupe for... Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter, £39

Okay, this isn't a direct dupe as it's a setting spray rather than a foundation. But Sue says if you pair this with your favourite foundation, it should give you that "wonderful flawless glow" similar to Flawless Filter. 

She recommends spraying it about 10 inches from your face all over and allowing it to dry for a few minutes. 

NYX Bare With Me Blur Tint Foundation, £9.99

It's a dupe for... Jones Road What the Foundation, £42

A good alternative to the trending Jones Road foundation is NYX's Bare With Me, which Sue says "smoothes pores but looks really light and natural". 

"Apply with a make-up brush all over your face for a professional finish," she says. 

Lacura Luminous Filter Foundation, £5

It's a dupe for... Clinique Even Better SPF15 Foundation, £34.50

TikTok went wild for this Aldi dupe, which Sue says is an alternative to the "high end glossy foundations". 

"It's such a bargain - it's definitely up there," she says. 

She recommends applying all over with a sponge, pressing rather than rubbing into the skin. 

Rimmel Natural Bronzer, £6.99 

It's a dupe for... Iconic London Kissed By the Sun Bronzer, £25

Sue says this is a light bronzer that "glides on easily with a blusher brush". 

Swirl it on the hollows of your cheeks, up to your temples, down underneath your jawline and on the bridge of your nose. 

So, how much difference is there between the dupes and the high-end products? 

You might be wondering just how noticeable the difference is if you go for the cheaper alternative. 

It's a difficult question to answer as it can vary from product to product - and not all the experts we spoke to were in total agreement. 

Sue Moxley says a lot of the lower end budget brands use similar ingredients to their more expensive counterparts. 

"You can get better packaging or the quality of the packaging is better, but it's also the brand name that is putting the prices up," she says. 

The high-end brands do put extra ingredients in, she says, but "they don't warrant the amount of difference in price". 

"It's still lovely to go and buy a Chanel lipstick or something and have it in your bag and it makes you feel wonderful. You get it out and it's gorgeous packaging and you put it on in the restaurant," she says.

"It does make you feel good, but I do believe that there are products out there that are equivalent in quality and ingredients wise." 

But Joyce Connor says the high-end brands are often worth it - although she does say you can "mix and match". 

More expensive brands rarely sell single-ingredient products, she says, and this can make a difference in terms of what you're getting. 

For example, she says an own-brand hyaluronic acid cream will often have that single ingredient but a similar product from a high-end brand will likely include peptides and ceramides - all providing extra value. 

One item not to skimp on

Joyce says if you're going to spend money on anything, it should be your moisturiser so you can get a perfect base for your make-up. 

"There are plenty of dupes out there that that are going to be effective as long as you are moisturising," she says. 

Her pick is the Goldfaden MD Vital Boost Even Skintone Daily Moisturiser - but at £60 for 50ml, that might be a bit much for some.
