Vegan-Friendly and Vegan Tours Around the World

Tours that cater for vegans have exploded in recent years. And I'm not talking about tours where you'll be served spaghetti with tomato sauce for dinner every night of your trip around Italy. I'm talking culinary adventures that are carefully planned with vegans in mind.

Multi-country jaunts around Europe, river cruises, meditation retreats, and short culinary walking tours. Whatever type of tour you're looking for, you'll find it here in a vegan-friendly version.

Vegan Tours with the Nomadic Vegan

Vegan journey to portugal.

Lisbon Funicular - vegan tours of Portugal

Europe’s new cool capital, Lisbon is still reasonably priced and has an exploding vegan scene . I love the city so much that in 2017 I made it my home base! When I'm not traveling, this is where you'll find me.

In addition to a cooking class where you’ll learn to make some veganized Portuguese specialties, we will take day trips out of the city to places like Sintra and the medieval walled town of Óbidos . If you enjoy shopping, you’ll have fun seeing all the products made from eco-friendly cork, and Lisbon has both a vegan clothing shop and a vegan shoe store.

Iconic Italy Tour: Rome, Florence and Venice

Venice canals - vegan tours of Italy

When I’m asked to pick my favorite country in the world, my answer is always Italy. It holds a special place in my heart for many reasons, one of which is its delicious cuisine.

There’s a lot more to Italian food than peperoni and parmesan, and on this trip, I’ll show you just how vegan-friendly traditional Italian cuisine really is . We’ll visit all the iconic sights of Rome , Florence and Venice , and we’ll also explore some smaller towns and villages.

The "Old Bridge" Backpackers

The restaurant attached to this hostel is a great place to go for vegan food in Africa . Helene, the co-owner of this hostel and lodge in Maun, Botswana, became vegan in 2015 and has since added a number of marked vegan options to the restaurant menu. In addition to running the accommodation and restaurant facilities, Old Bridge can also organize safaris and " mokoro " (canoe) trips in the Okavango Delta.

Bulrush Mokoro Safari

Mogale, a  local vegan safari guide from Botswana , leads mokoro canoe trips in the Okavango Delta. He recently started his own business, Bulrush Mokoro Safari. Mogale was born and raised in a traditional African village in the Delta. At 10 years of age, he became vegetarian when he learned that his grandmother was planning to kill one of her goats for meat.

He's now been vegan for 20 years and has a deep love and respect for all animals. Going on a walking safari and coming face to face with elephants, zebras and wildebeests with Mogale as your guide is an unforgettable experience.

You can book your mokoro trip either through Old Bridge Backpackers (see above) or directly with vegan guide Mogale. His contact details are: email: enamilemogale[at]yahoo[dot]com or WhatsApp: 00267-72404005.

Wild Dog Safaris

Where: namibia, bostwana, zimbabwe.

Winner of the Eco Awards Namibia for their contribution to responsible tourism in the country, this Windhoek-based safari company is happy to accommodate vegan travelers. I ate well when I joined two of their tours as part of my trip around southern Africa in 2017.

The owner is very open to feedback about how to improve their vegan options, and she’s even said that vegan and vegetarian meal prep will be the main theme of their next staff training! They offer camping safaris, accommodated safaris, and self-drive trips throughout Namibia and in neighboring countries.

Young Pioneer Tours

Where: north korea, africa, central asia , middle east , soviet europe , unrecognized countries.

This adventure tour company specializes in taking you to North Korea and other worldwide “destinations your mother would rather you stay away from”, at budget prices. Sounds like my kind of tour!

Better yet, they have a “ resident vegan ” on staff who leads tours to North Korea and other international destinations. They pride themselves on being able to cater to vegans on all their tours. And that includes tours to some very off-the-beaten-path destinations, where your HappyCow app isn’t going to get you very far. I’m talking Somaliland, Iraqi Kurdistan, and even Chernobyl!

Creative Travel Connections

Where: italy and greece.

Creative Travel Connections helps people experience places and cultures in ways that go beyond typical holidays. Whether it’s sharing a feast of Greek food on a rooftop, spending time with rescued elephants in Northern Thailand, taking cooking lessons with an Italian chef in the middle of Tuscany, or learning about sea life while snorkeling in the Indian Ocean… when you travel with them, you travel with purpose.

Intrepid Travel

It seems even the big guns are starting to jump on the vegan bandwagon. Intrepid has been a major player in the world of small group adventure travel for many years now. They always been able to accommodate vegans on their tours, but now they've gone a step further by creating real food adventures that are 100% vegan.

They are currently offering three different vegan food trips, in India, Thailand and Italy, all of which last for eight days. Foodie tours and street art tours in New York City are also available at any time of year.

Vegan Tours of Cuba

Tupiza Tours

Where: bolivia.

Most visitors to the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia start their trip from the dusty, unappealing town of Uyuni. However, a better option is to start in the much more pleasant town of Tupiza, which will allow you to extend the tour for another day and see sights that you would not otherwise see. This is what I did when I visited the Salar (and much more!) on a 4-day trip with Tupiza Tours, and it was a fantastic experience.

Their cooks are trained in catering to all diets and know exactly what vegan means. The typical menu focuses mainly on vegetables and grains, but our cook Sonia said that she would be happy to prepare traditional Bolivian dishes that feature beans, lentils and other legumes if requested.

Pathway Safaris

Where: kenya.

Pathway Safaris organizes various wildlife-viewing trips in Eastern Africa, and they offer two different vegan itineraries. The first is the 11-day Vegans Special Safari, which visits Kenya's most famous national parks and animal sanctuaries. The tour group will also participate in various local projects related to conservation and wildlife management.

Their second vegan trip, the 15-day Vegans Bush and Beach Safari, also includes plenty of wildlife viewing and animal sanctuaries, with the addition of four relaxing days at the beach at the end of the tour.

Vegan Cruises

Vegan river cruises.

Vegan River Cruises offers 100 percent vegan cuisine on its luxury European river cruises. Even the signature cocktails and toiletries provided in each cabin are vegan. Travel in modern luxury while exploring Old World Europe and dining on regionally-grown fresh vegan fare deliciously prepared to tempt all taste buds.

They have recently expanded beyond Europe (and beyond rivers!) by offering a cruise in South America through the Chilean fjords and Patagonia .

Holistic Holiday at Sea

This Florida-based education company offers vacations that are relaxing, educational, and inspirational. They have been around for quite a few years already, and in February 2020 they are offering seven days of self-care, adventure, and community aboard the MSC Divina.

In addition to the 100 percent vegan whole food menu, they also offer a vegan menu with no added oil. The menus are ideally suited for anyone eating a vegan, macrobiotic or gluten-free diet. In addition to the healthy gourmet food, there are also more than 150 lectures and workshops led by household names such as Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Neal Barnard and T. Colin Campbell.

Note: Before you go on a cruise, I recommend educating yourself about the ethical issues involved. Listen to The Bearded Vegans tackle this subject on episode 82 of their podcast, titled " Is a Vegan Cruise an Oxymoron? "

Luxury Vegan River Cruises

Luxury vegan river cruises provide a unique experience for those looking to enjoy the sights and flavors of a destination in comfort. Passengers can enjoy spacious cabins, fine dining, and personalized service during their voyage.

Most river cruise lines offer vegetarian or vegan options for meals, as well as an array of activities tailored to the needs of vegans seeking freedom from animal-based products. Excursions include visits to local markets, farms, and other attractions that enable travelers to explore nature-based attractions while learning about local customs and cultures.

Meals are prepared with fresh ingredients sourced from sustainable sources by expert chefs who strive to create dishes that tantalize the taste buds without compromising any ethical considerations.

River cruises also offer ample opportunity for relaxation on board with spa treatments available upon request.

Budget Friendly Vegan River Cruises

Including economical options, vegan river cruises offer a variety of options for travelers looking to explore without sacrificing their values. Budget friendly vegan river cruises provide an opportunity to experience the beauty of nature and wildlife while adhering to a plant-based dietary lifestyle. Cruise companies are recognizing the growing demand for cruelty free vacations and are beginning to offer more affordable packages with accommodations such as smaller cabins or shared rooms that allow guests to save money while enjoying the same amenities.

In addition, some companies may offer discounts depending on the time of year or promotional offers which can make the overall cost even lower. Furthermore, many cruises will provide vegan meals at no extra charge and some will also include activities like yoga classes or excursions into nearby towns as part of their package deals.

For those who want to explore while respecting animal rights, budget friendly vegan river cruises have become an increasingly popular option in recent years. With careful planning and research, travelers can find cruise packages that are both enjoyable and economical without compromising their values.

Vegan Food Options on River Cruises

River cruises typically offer a variety of vegan food options for guests to enjoy. It is important for vegans to confirm with cruise companies and individual ships about the availability of vegan meals, as menus can vary greatly.

Cruise lines are increasingly aware that many people on board may be vegan, and they have responded by providing an array of plant-based options. Options range from simple dishes such as salads, soups, and fresh fruits to complex entrees created by chefs using seasonal ingredients.

Many restaurants also feature buffets where vegans can find a variety of dishes including rice dishes, grains, legumes, vegetables, and proteins made without animal products. Furthermore, some cruise lines will even allow passengers to request a specific item or help them customize items on the menu according to their dietary needs.

With so much available in terms of vegan food options on river cruises, it’s easy for vegans to find something they like while enjoying the sights along their journey.

Activities and Excursions for Vegans

Vegans on luxury river cruises can take advantage of various activities and excursions that have been tailored to accommodate their dietary needs. Tour operators offer comprehensive packages with options such as wine tastings, cultural visits, culinary tours, and outdoor adventures. These activities enable vegans to explore the destination without compromising on their lifestyle choices.

Furthermore, tour operators provide guides who are knowledgeable about veganism, allowing travelers to feel secure in their decision to embark on a vegan-friendly journey. Additionally, vegans are provided with information about animal sanctuaries and other eco-friendly establishments in the area, enabling them to deepen their appreciation of nature while contributing positively to the environment during their holiday experience.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Vegan River Cruise

When selecting a vegan river cruise, it is important to consider the range of activities and excursions available, as well as any relevant information regarding animal sanctuaries and eco-friendly establishments in the area. Research should be conducted to ensure that no animals are harmed or exploited during any portion of the journey.

It is also important to pay attention to the catering options offered on board, making sure they align with vegan dietary preferences. Furthermore, one must determine whether there are certified vegan chefs onboard who can provide delicious meals during the voyage.

Lastly, individuals should check if there is an opportunity for sustainable shopping opportunities at ports visited by the vessel so that those desiring freedom can contribute positively to local economies while remaining true to their values.

The Plant-Based Guide to Cruise Vacations

By Lindsay Morris ,

Healthy eating might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you consider taking a cruise. But as demand grows for more healthful vegan options, several seafaring companies are getting on board with special menus and themed voyages that celebrate a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle. We’ve rounded up a list of the top cruise lines that cater to WFPB eaters as well as mealtime tips for smooth sailing on any ship.

Cruises That Cater to Vegan and Plant-Based Diets

Windstar Cruises

Big news over at Windstar : In partnership with the National Health Association, this line of boutique cruise ships is launching luxury whole-food, plant-based menus aboard all their vessels starting in June 2023. Windstar sails small groups of passengers (less than 350 people per trip) through the most beautiful water passages in the world, including the Caribbean, European rivers, and the coasts of Alaska. The menus feature dishes with no added salt, oil, or sugar, and they’re also gluten-free to accommodate as many guests as possible. Think veggie enchiladas with black bean and cilantro sauce, roasted butternut squash velouté with baked pumpkin seeds, and tahini brownies with fresh strawberries. If you want to travel with other WFPB eaters, the NHA also organizes plant-based group cruises so you can bond with like-minded travelers, embark on incredible on-shore excursions, and experience life at sea like never before.

Holistic Holiday at Sea

The 100% plant-based Holistic Holiday at Sea , offered by MSC Cruises, is a seven-day retreat for those looking for delicious food, fun, fitness, and vegan inspiration and insight. HHS offers ample opportunity to rub shoulders and attend presentations from some of the biggest names in the plant-based lifestyle community, including physicians, nutritionists, chefs, and athletes. But there’s also plenty of downtime to relax and enjoy island life, whether that means shopping in Nassau, bicycling and kayaking in St. Maarten, or snorkeling Antigua's Deep Bay. Meals are prepared from scratch using whole foods, maple and rice syrups replace white sugar and artificial sweeteners, and oil-free and gluten-free options are offered. Menu highlights include sweet rice and millet porridge topped with hazelnuts and watercress; lentil-walnut pâté with Belgian endive; vegetable paella; and chocolate-orange cake with chocolate-orange sauce.

Vegan Cruise Risotto

VeganTravel

The Germany-based VeganTravel offers fully vegan cruises throughout Europe and has slowly expanded their list of destinations around the world. Upcoming voyages include the Danube river, France and Normandy, and India via the Ganges River. Complete with daily yoga classes and an on-deck spa, these cruises are a luxurious way to indulge in the plant-based lifestyle. Vegan meal offerings include a daily breakfast buffet and fine-dining sit-down dinners in the evenings.

Oceania Cruises

While it isn't a strictly vegan cruise, Oceania offers a total of 250 thoughtfully-created vegan dishes aboard all six of its cruise liners. Developed in collaboration with vegan chef Christophe Berg and inspired by Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and Mexican cuisines, the offerings have been integrated into menus on the ships’ Grand Dining Rooms and Terrace Cafes. Dishes include green apple müesli with pistachios, pecans, and yellow raisins; penne au pistou with broccoli and sun-dried tomatoes; and green papaya kelp noodle salad. For travelers aspiring to a serious spa experience on the high seas, the plant-based menu is a key feature of the luxe Aquamar culinary and wellness spa programs on Oceania ships.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises , a luxury, all-inclusive cruiseline, offers 200-plus vegan dishes across its four-ship fleet serving more than 450 ports of call. The selections—also developed by vegan chef Christophe Berg—are fully integrated into daily menus. Highlights include chickpea pancakes, chia-cashew yogurt breakfast bowls, falafel fritters, plant-based power and poke bowls, and basil-scented fruit minestrone. Regent Seven Seas tours include excursions to Tasmania, the Arctic, the Mediterranean, Bali, and Cape Horn, among other stunning destinations.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

Windjammer Cafe, a buffet-dining option aboard Royal Caribbean ships, offers plenty of options for plant-based guests. In addition, the Main Dining Room features a nightly vegan menu that provides WFPB guests with several scrumptious options for starters, entrees, and desserts . Highlights include edamame-stuffed portobello mushrooms, vegan spaghetti Bolognese, and toffee "cheesecake" with dark chocolate and a peanut-butter crust. Royal Caribbean Cruise destinations include Bermuda, the Bahamas, Mexico, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Belize, and Cozumel.

Princess Cruises

Fusing gourmet cuisine with eco-conscious ethics, Princess Cruises is now offering an expansive vegan menu across their fleet of 15 ships. And while it can often be slim pickings for plant-based travelers, Princess Cruises has cooked up extensice offerings to satisfy every palate. From soups and starters to pastas and main dishes, you can expect to have just as much choice as the omnivorous guests. A few options include Baja-style cauliflower tacos, green goddess salad with tofu and endive, fettuccine with walnut sauce, and plant-based shepherd's pie. Set sail and take your taste buds on the trip of a lifetime!

SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream Yacht Club makes a point to pamper discerning and health-conscious travelers with gourmet vegan food that rivals Michelin star restaurants. Whether you're set to tour the polar regions, island-hop the Caribbean, or sample wines on a Mediterranean voyage, you can expect to find pumpkin and zucchini lasagna, tofu cakes on sautéed zucchini with mint and basil sauce, and pumpkin-carrot mousse with roasted pumpkin seeds as standard fare. A DIY salad area for lunch and a cold-pressed raw and vegan juice smoothie bar offers refreshing beverages.

Costa Cruises

Costa offers special vegetarian and vegan menus upon request and also allows passengers to bring their own food products and have ship chefs prepare meals out of them . The company offers tours of the Caribbean, South America, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean, among other fantastic destinations.

Tips for Eating Whole-Food, Plant-Based on a Cruise

Booked your cruise with another company? No sweat; there are many ways to “work the system,” says Steve Lawenda , a family physician at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clarita, California. Lawenda recently put his whole-food, plant-based diet to the test on a cruise. Here are his best tips for navigating uncharted waters.

Do Your Homework

Check your cruise line’s website for menu options or give them a call, recommends Lawenda. “Consider a Google search for your cruise line and/or specific ship and include the term ‘vegan’ or ‘plant-based.’ There are many useful third-party sites with tips, some sites of which consist of consumer/traveler reviews that also may be helpful.” Lawenda recommends perusing the message boards on CruiseCritic.com .

Don’t be shy, says Lawenda. “Once you board your ship, it’s most helpful to acquaint yourself with the dining room’s head waiter or maître d' and explain your specific dietary needs. I have found they will either recommend items on the menu that are already compatible with your needs, or they will ask their chefs to create custom dishes for you.”

Hit the Buffet

Most cruises boast a large all-you-can-eat buffet. Use this to your advantage; it’s a great place to assemble a tasty meal from the vast array of side dishes and salad fixings. “The challenge was sometimes knowing which dishes were vegan, which had oil and/or refined sugar, or other added sweeteners,” says Lawenda. “In my experience, the head chefs will be more than happy to walk the buffet with you, pointing out existing options that fit your criteria, and in many cases, they will also be happy to make something custom for you.”

Remember: You’re the Customer

Cruises want you to enjoy yourself, write rave reviews, and recommend your experience to your friends, says Lawenda. “This typically means they will do whatever they can to not only accommodate your dietary requests [but also] make your food as delicious as possible. There seems to be a decent amount of competition in the cruise industry these days, and customer satisfaction, especially when it comes to the dining and culinary experience, is a top priority.”

What our guests say.

"I loved everything about our first vegan cruise. Many people with whom I spoke who have been on Vegan Cruises say this one through Vietnam and in Cambodia was the best they've ever been on. I'll begin with the beautifully served exceptionally delicious food, and amazing service. The chef, who adapted his cuisine to Vegan, did a spectacular job! The presentation of food was outstanding in addition to the tastes and the variety. And the staff was amazing! They struck an outstanding balance between meeting our needs with efficiency and at the same time, being genuinely friendly. Also both of our guides in Vietnam and Cambodia were extremely good. Sending appreciation for your thoughtful care in putting this cruise togther." - Dorothy
"I had a TREMENDOUS time on the South of France cruise! The people, food, and sights were wonderful. We were treated so well by the staff of the riverboat, too. I HIGHLY recommend this experience and can't wait to go on another cruise! Huge thanks to Dirk Bocklage for working so hard to realize his vision and giving us the opportunity to share in it." - Gretchen
We just wanted to say an enormous thank you for the wonderful holiday we have just had with you on the Norwegian Fiords Cruise. The food, the speakers, the scenery, the staff, the other travellers, the fun we had, everything, it was all so lovely, thank you so much.  Please do let us know all about the next one :) Thank you! - Suzi & Simon

A vegan holiday with flavour – this European river cruise is the real deal whether you eat meat or not

Bliss (Picture: Vegan Travel/Dirk Bocklage)

When I first decided to ditch animal products around five years ago, the vegan landscape was still a bit – I’ll be honest – crap.

There were about two types of vegan cheese, and they both tasted like chalk.

Finding makeup that was both good and hadn’t been plunged into the eyes of rabbits seemed like a near-impossible task.

thumbnail for post ID 6452993

The shoes looked like they were made from burlap.

None of this is the case now, of course.

There are about 50 types of extremely convincing vegan cheese (have you tried Nutcrafter Creamery?), it’s easy to find cruelty-free cosmetics, and there are loads of high-quality vegan leather shoes and bags.

But, on top of all of this, the existence of a vegan river cruise really shows how far things have come.

Everything on board Vegan Travel’s Emerald Dawn ship was 100% plant-based – not just the food, but also the toiletries in the bathrooms, and even the ‘leather’ on the seats.

And after half a decade of spending my holidays constantly repeating ‘no milk please’, ‘I’ll have the veggie full English without the Quorn sausages, eggs or butter’ and ‘is this made with lard?’, I’ll admit I went a bit hysterical with joy.

(Picture: Ashitha Nagesh)

Plus, the cruise was all inclusive. I don’t usually go for all-inclusive package deals – or cruises, funnily enough – but since this experience I’ve been converted to both.

I used to think being stuck on a ship for a week with the same people was my idea of hell, but it turns out it was just because those people kept trying to feed me bacon.

As soon as my fiancé Nolan and I arrived on board the ship, which was docked in Amsterdam, we headed straight for the bar, and I had my first White Russian since 2011.

And, thanks to us having had a rather hellish flying experience and it being all inclusive and all, I followed it up with about five Bellinis.

We also took a minute to collapse in our cabin, which was massive and luxurious, with huge wall-sized windows.

Vegan White Russians on board (Picture: Ashitha Nagesh)

Then, finally, dinner.

I knew there would be nice food on board the ship, but I had absolutely no idea how elaborate it would be.

They had amazing vegan versions of things I didn’t even know it was possible to make – not to mention the sheer quantity of it.

thumbnail for post ID 6252491

Every night for dinner there were five courses – starter, soup, intermezzo, main course, and dessert – with wine matched to the food.

And we’re not talking ‘three asparagus tips with a balsamic vinegar drizzle’ type of main course (genuinely something that has been served to me as a vegan option in the past).

We’re talking hearty rucola dumplings in an onion sauce; spiced quinoa and lentil cakes in a tofu and vegetable broth; seitan stroganoff served with pappardelle.

Seitan escalopes with celeriac mash (Picture: Ashitha Nagesh)

For starters there were things like fried chickpea fritters, California sushi rolls, beetroot carpaccio with a ‘blue cheese’ mousse, vegetable tempura, as well as a salad alternative every evening.

But as a vegan, you also learn to appreciate the small stuff – which is why I squealed with joy when I saw there was vegan butter on the table for the bread.

The soup courses, which came soon after the starters, were hearty and delicious.

Beetroot carpaccio as a starter (Picture: Ashitha Nagesh)

The desserts were incredible – fried cinnamon dumplings with vegan Chantilly cream, honeycomb fritters served with cream and shortbread biscuits, crepe suzette with even more Chantilly cream.

There was also the option of having vegan ice cream (not sorbet) each night, which was equally amazing – and always served with a very generous dollop of cream and a shortbread biscuit or wafer.

And the service throughout the cruise was impeccable.

Cinnamon dumplings for dessert (Picture: Ashitha Nagesh)

It’s not just the dinner. You’re basically fed incredible food from the first moment you wake up.

Which leads us to breakfast. We really need to talk about this breakfast – a massive all-you-can-eat vegan breakfast buffet.

The hot food section included vegan sausages, hash browns, scrambled tofu, beans and vegetables.

Then there were vegan croissants, pain au chocolats and muffins.

And because the cruise company is German, they also had more continental offerings like rye bread, pates, vegan sliced ham and cheese.

And naturally, there was green juice – it is a vegan cruise, after all.

I ate all of this every single morning, like a bear preparing to hibernate.

I ate all of this (Picture: Ashitha Nagesh)

Lunch was three courses – soup, mains and dessert.

Most days I was too full from breakfast to make it, but on one of the days I did they were serving the FGV Burger – designed by Sean O’Callaghan of the  Fat Gay Vegan  blog. He was on board and held a really useful social media workshop one evening.

At about 4pm there was kaffee und kuchen – coffee and five different types of little cakes, plus a massive bowl of vegan Chantilly cream.

I was a big fan of the cream Picture: Ashitha Nagesh

Mealtimes aside, you could spend your free time in the ship’s gym, or in the swimming pool on the upper deck, which had massive glass walls so you could look out at the Rhine as you sailed.

The pool could also be converted into a general floor, for cinema screenings and vegan advocacy talks.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOwrictFsKD/?taken-by=ashnagesh
https://www.instagram.com/p/BOwj4pXFmbj/?taken-by=ashnagesh

The ship docked in towns and cities along the Rhine, including Delft, Brussels and Dusseldorf.

It was my fiance’s first time in Germany, and he fell in love with the place.

In the space of a day we managed to explore most of the city, go beer tasting and visit the market, and we’re now planning a longer visit.

Lovely Dusseldorf (Picture: Ashitha Nagesh)

It was also a good taster of the various cities, to figure out where you’d want to go a long trip.

This cruise isn’t just for vegans.

A surprising number of people on board were veggie, or meat eaters, who had been reluctantly brought along by vegan friends and partners, but ended up saying that they hadn’t realised how impressive vegan food could be.

All I can say is – go.

Go and take some elasticated trousers because you’re going to put on about half a stone.

Prices on the vegan river cruises start from £790 per person and go up to £1,145.

Ever considered a vegan luxury river cruise?

The world of vegan travel is an exciting one; full of opportunities to explore new destinations, packed with the chance to savour new experiences and of course offering endless tasty and exciting dining experiences from simple vegan street food to exquisite plant based fine dining.

Here at Vegan Food Quest we are on a full time and never ending journey to ‘find, eat and write about the best vegan food in the world’ that over the past 2 years has seen us visit 12 countries in Asia and push the boundaries in our search for that perfect vegan meal.

We haven’t found it yet, but rest assured we will keep going until we do; in fact it is impossible to compare home cooked regional cuisine prepared by your homestay host, street food purchased from a food cart and sublime creations by a Michelin starred chef. That is why our quest is so much fun, there is so much out there still to discover…

Sometimes, this takes us out of our comfort zone, travelling in a style and manner we’re not normally used to and this happened recently when joining a vegan luxury river cruise with AmaWaterways aboard their brand new river cruise entitled ‘Cambodia, Vietnam and the Riches of The Mekong’; our previous travel experiences had all been arranged independently so a cruise with organised tours and travelling as part of a tour group offered an all new experience.

Guess what? We absolutely loved it!

Experience life on the Mekong River.

Experience life on the Mekong River

From our home for the week, the sleek River Vessel AmaDara, the fellow guests we befriended, the exciting and educational shore excursions and the freshly prepared vegan food we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our maiden voyage.

For those that wish to know more there is a full review of our cruise here and also a thought provoking blog post entitled ‘Travelling out of our comfort zone’ that hopefully tells the tale of our time cruising the Mekong.

AmaWaterways were the perfect choice for our vegan luxury river cruise, not only are they one of the leading river cruise specialists in the world offering an impressive choice of cruises in Europe, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma and Africa, but they work hard to ensure guests with dietary requirements are well catered for and therefore offer a separate vegan lunch and dinner menu on each of their cruises which for the vegan traveller is always great to hear.

10 Things You Should Know Before Your First European River Cruise

T wenty-fifth wedding anniversary! Where did the time go? And most importantly, what should we do to celebrate? A few days later, with suspiciously perfect timing, a Viking river cruise advertisement dropped into our mailbox.

Two decades ago, we tried a Caribbean ocean cruise — big ship, lots of people, so much food and drink — and never did a second one. But a European river cruise sounded appealing: smooth water, a new city every morning on a small ship with less than 200 passengers, top-notch food and a customizable mix of culture, lectures and activities.

Ten months later, we were flying to Budapest, Hungary to begin our 11-day Passage to Eastern Europe on Viking Cruises. Here are 10 things we learned from our first river cruise:

1. You’ll Wind Up Feeling Young Again

If you are in your 50s and miss that young and spry feeling, you could do worse than go on a river cruise. We knew the average age would likely skew into the 60s, but we did not anticipate being the youngest couple on our ship. Nor did we mind. Being surrounded by seniors in their 70s and 80s having a great time seeing new places was an inspiration for our own future.

2.  You Won’t Find Too Many First-Time Cruisers

Those folks a generation ahead of us have been busy. We didn’t stand out just because of our relative youth, but also because this was our first river cruise. Nearly everybody we met had cruised before — not just with Viking, but other lines around the world as well. Ron, a former Army master sergeant, was on his seventh Viking cruise and even admitted to doing the 15-day Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest twice.

“I’d do it a third time if they let me do it for free,” he told us.

3. Water Levels May Cause Unexpected Detours

A huge river cruise appeal for my wife was the absence of ocean waves. No waves = no seasickness. But, unlike the ocean, river levels rise and fall. Too high, and the river ships can’t pass under certain bridges. Too low and, like us, the ship may have to stop short of some destinations and passengers will spend extra time on the bus. For us, low water levels triggered shore excursion substitutions in an unexpected Bulgarian city as well as a longer bus ride to Bucharest. Disappointing, but manageable. In other cases, passengers might have to abandon their river ship and bus transfer to an identical one upriver to continue the journey. Be prepared.

4. Every Day Is Casual Day

We were going to be in Europe, cruising on an upscale boat, and our fellow passengers would be older than us; accordingly, my wife and I planned to dress nicely: collared, button-down shirts and sleek sweaters and blouses. Viking emphasizes no formal dinners and a relaxed vibe, but I still almost brought a jacket for the evenings.

I’m glad I didn’t. Our fellow passengers overwhelmingly embraced comfortable casual — bright, plush sneakers; jeans; shorts and even a few Harley T-shirts — it was all okay.  There were definitely people like us, avoiding the jeans and sneakers look, and if you want to dress nicer, go for it, but it’s not necessary.

5.  Embrace Conversation

If you fear initiating new conversations with new people several times a day, a river cruise might intimidate you. Fear not. Most of our experienced river cruiser passengers seemed to crave meeting new people and were easy to chat with.

In our first 24 hours on the ship, I listened to a tale about an encounters with Perth Australia gold miners gone wrong, met a guy who got a Purple Heart when his helicopter crashed in Vietnam, admired the mangled fingers of a 75-year-old New England hockey player and listened to our dinner companion say, “I would not have married my husband if I had to do it again.” With him right there.

How Expedition Cruising Appeals to the Adventurous Traveler

6.  i’ll have both entrees, please. .

Yes, river cruise food is delicious. Nearly every meal featured regional specialties of the neighboring country. A few minutes before dinner seating began, the chief chef would describe his culinary creations to select from that evening. It was like a halftime speech. He’d finish up and we’d all race (or, in some cases, shuffle) out of the lounge to the dining room, pumped up for the coming delicacies.

Yet, as good as the shipboard food may be, take some time to…

7. Eat Locally

Don’t confine yourself to only the refined ship meals. A few steps away from your docked ship you’ll probably find flavorful local food well worth nibbling on. Some of my favorite meals of our trip were a platter of cevapcici eaten under a portrait of Uncle Tito (the Cold War era Yugoslav leader) in Belgrade and some meltingly lovely pumpkin phyllo pastry in Croatia.

8. Pace Yourself

With a new city each day and limited time, you can exhaust yourself trying to do too much. At one point, our new friends, Victor and Leslie, admitted that they signed up for too many excursions. There is only so much anyone can sample in a few hours or even a day, and we accepted that. A travel memoir I found in the ship’s library, Far and Away , gave a satisfying response to that dilemma: “Always leave something for next time, something to tempt you back.”  You’re on a cruise; make some time to simply relax on the sundeck or terrace, admiring the views.

9.  Find a Less-Traveled River

Ever heard of the Iron Gates of the Danube? I hadn’t either. Every passenger was out taking photos as our ship slipped into this dramatic gorge between Serbia and Romania. At one point, the giant face of an ancient Dacian king carved into the rock wall stared back at us.

Other European rivers plying well-traveled countries like Germany, the Netherlands and France host most river cruise traffic, but we delighted in discovering more unfamiliar East European countries. Every day gave us new stories and perspectives, often containing history that we’d never heard of. Nor was all of this history ancient. On successive days we got thoughtful perspectives from a local Croatian tour guide and then her Serbian counterpart on the 1990s Balkan War. When choosing your cruise itinerary, consider the lesser-known places.

10. Cabin Class Choices Matter

After choosing a cruise date and itinerary, you pick your cabin class. I agonized over that. Budget limitations dictated the cheapest, er, “most affordable” cabin for us, down on the lower deck and featuring only a narrow window just above the waterline. My online research emphasized that most of our cabin time would be at night when it was dark anyway.  Moreover, even during daylight hours, the ship would often be parked next to a dock or sandwiched between other cruise ships with someone else’s window inches away.

All of that was indeed true. And once on board, it was obvious that even the most spacious cabins could not compare to the nearly 360-degree views from the outdoor terrace and top sundeck where passengers gathered in the sunny afternoons. Still, I would have enjoyed more window space in our stateroom. Next cruise maybe I’ll spring for the fancy veranda cabin.

Increased sustainability at the 2024 Olympics: Torqeedo electrifies “Mistinguett”, the longest boat river cruise show in Paris

Large battery capacity for long cruises

France supports conversion to electric ship propulsion Inland navigation plays a vital role in France, with 800km of rivers and 600km of canals. The French government supports retrofitting boats with electric propulsion through the state-owned waterway navigation authority Voies Navigables de France (VNF). With an offer to subsidise up to 90% of retrofit costs, France is setting a great example in making the transition to electric powertrains feasible for many vessels. This effort underscores a national commitment to reducing carbon footprints and preserving the country's natural waterways.

Torqeedo's participation in the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony with at least four electric-powered boats, including the “Mistinguett”, marks a significant milestone in promoting electric transport solutions on water on a global stage. The grand parade, featuring 90 boats in total, will be accompanied by dance shows and vibrant celebrations along the riverbank.
