Are you heading to Costa Rica for 2 weeks and wondering what you should be doing? Then this article is for you!

Costa Rica is an incredible country and while it’s one of the smallest in the Americas, it has a lot to offer.

Two weeks is a great amount of time to experience Costa Rica , do most of the fun activities and see the animals.

Of course, we could always spend more time there but I genuinely think that 14 days in Costa Rica is an ideal amount of time.

I visited Costa Rica as a tour leader for an adventure tour company which means I had to organise all of the activities and make sure everything was as optimised as it can be.

In this article, I share all my secrets to craft the perfect Costa Rica 2-week itinerary.

🔎 Table of Contents

Best 2-week tour of Costa Rica

While I will tell you exactly how to plan your trip to Costa Rica on your own, it’s also worth considering booking a tour.

With a tour, you don’t have to stress about anything. You can simply relax and enjoy! Also, since you will have a driver, you don’t have to worry about driving and it’s less tiring for you.

As a general thing, I find that I always do a lot more with a group tour however, it’s true that it’s not as flexible as being on your own.

Either way, if you are interested in booking a tour of Costa Rica for 2 weeks, check out the Costa Rica Adventure tour by G Adventures.

It covers most of the places I mention below and you get to do a lot. It’s also good value for money.

Click here to see the prices.

How to get to Costa Rica

The easiest way to get to Costa Rica is by plane as it has two international airports: San Jose and Liberia.

Depending on your home airport, you may find that one is better than the other however, if you can, fly to San José.

While this is not necessarily the nicest of cities, it is still the capital which means that you can find everything you need.

It will make it easier to start your trip since it’s very centrally located and there are loads of car rental places and tour operators.

Renting a car in Costa Rica

Car in costa rica

If you’re not opting for a tour, the best way to get around Costa Rica is by car.

The roads are in very good condition and it’s fairly easy to drive.

Make sure to book your car in advance (especially if you’re visiting during the high season). You can compare the prices on Discover Cars and see what are the best deals.

They also provide additional insurance that is a lot cheaper than from the rental place itself.

Once you booked, you can pick up your vehicle and sign the paperwork. You do not need an international driver’s licence but you will need your country one.

In terms of driving itself, it can be a bit sporty in San José since it’s quite busy and the traffic can be bad.

Everywhere else, it’s pretty straight forward and nothing to be worried about.

If you stick to the main tourist destinations, a 2WD will be enough but if you are planning on exploring a bit more and going off the beaten path, I’d recommend opting for a 4×4, especially during the rainy season.

The only road that will be a bit tricky is the one from La Fortuna to Monteverde . It’s not paved all the way and there are big pot holes so for this one, a 4WD would be a bit better.

Your detailed Costa Rica 14-day itinerary

Now that you know everything to plan your trip, it’s time to talk about what to do in Costa Rica for 2 weeks.

Here is the itinerary.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 1: Exploring San José, the capital city

Let’s start your first day with the capital of Costa Rica, San José.

While a lot of people might tell you to skip San José altogether, I find it interesting to spend a day here and the first one is the best (since you have nothing to compare it to yet).

It will give you a chance to learn about the history of Costa Rica and its culture.

Morning: Food Tour

water apple in San Jose Costa Rica

Start your day with the food tour of San José. It’s a great way to start your trip since you will learn about the history and get to sample a lot of food (this will also help you during the trip since you know what to eat).

This market tour is ran by locals and you can choose between different starting time (but I recommend doing the 9AM or 11AM one).

You can book it online here. It’s very easy and good value for money since you get to eat a fair bit.

You meet the guide at Los Presentes Monument in downtown San José. This is a practical location since it’s right by central avenue and near the bank of Costa Rica (if you need to withdraw some money, they have several ATMs).

The guide will then take you around downtown. Firstly you’ll go up central avenue, where they’ll explain about the lottery tickets and various statues.

Your first food stop will be at the farmers market. This is a great place to find local fruit and vegetables. You will try many of them including water apple, rambutans, passion fruit, banana and more.

You will then head to Central Market. This is a busy place where locals go shopping. You can find just about anything from live chickens to souvenirs.

caldosa in San Jose Costa Rica

The guide will take you to a ceviche stand where you can try a caldosa. This is a Costa Rican street food staple which consist of ceviche in a bag of chips. It’s very good and definitely quite unique.

I would never have ordered it by myself and actually found myself eating it on other occasions after the tour.

You will then go around downtown to see some of the important landmarks such as the National Theatre or the Metropolitan Cathedral and will end at a coffee shop.

Here the owner will show you how to make empanadas (yep that’s also a bit of a mini cooking class) and will explain everything you need to know about Costa Rican coffee.

Altogether, the tour lasts about 2 to 3 hours which is the perfect amount of time.

Afternoon: National Museum of Costa Rica

National museum in costa rica

After the food tour, I’d recommend heading to the National Museum of Costa Rica.

This museum is located on calle 17 which isn’t too far from downtown (you can walk there).

The building used to be a fortress and military barracks before it became a museum.

Interesting fact: Costa Rica abolished its army in the 40s which means it has now no army and that’s why the building had no further use for the military.

The national museum of Costa Rica is a great place to learn about the history of the country and its culture.

This is why I recommend visiting on the first day. It will help you understand a lot of the things you will see later on.

There is an entrance fee (as for everything in Costa Rica) but it’s well worth the price.

Inside, you will find a permanent exhibition about the history of Costa Rica as well as pre-colombian artefacts and a garden with butterflies.

Evening: Barrio Escalante

Jardin de lolita meal in Barrio escalante in san jose costa rica

In the evening, it’s time to go for dinner and drinks! Head to Barrio Escalante, one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in San José.

This area is full of cute restaurants and bars that you can’t miss. It’s also where a lot of locals go out so it will give you a good feel of the city.

If you are a Harry Potter fan , it’s worth mentioning that there is a Harry Potter themed bar. It’s called the Mandragora Pub. They have loads of props and you can even dress up!

For drinks, Costa Rica beer factory is a great place to get beer. They are a little brewery with very funky decor.

For food, I particularly recommend Jardin de Lolita. It’s a food garden with loads of stalls. They have all sorts of food (even a vegan stall). It’s very pretty and the atmosphere is amazing.

If you fancy going out, you will also find a few options in this area. La Destileria is a cool bar open until late with reggaeton music.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 2: Irazù Volcano and Cartago

Today will be the first day of adventure in Costa Rica!

Morning:  Irazu Volcano

Irazu volcano in Costa rica

From San José, you can go to Irazu volcano . It’s only 1 hour 30 from the capital and is the highest volcano in Costa Rica.

There are three ways to get there:

  • Hire a car. If you’re planning on hiring a car for the trip, then you can drive to Irazu volcano yourself. The roads are well maintained and there is a carpark at the entrance. It takes about 90 minutes.
  • Take the bus. The bus stop is located in front of the Gran Costa Rica hotel, near the national theatre. It leaves every morning at 8AM. This is a cheap option since it’s about $6 each way but it will take about 2 hours to get to the volcano.
  • Book a day tour. This is the most expensive option but also the most stress-free one. You can book a tour online which includes transport and entrance to the volcano as well as a visit of Cartago City and lunch.

Once you get to the volcano, you will have to show your entrance ticket. It’s best to book it in advance on their official site but if you haven’t, don’t worry, they have wifi so you can do it when you get there.

Tickets can only be bought online though so you can’t pay in cash.

entrance irazu volcano in costa rica

You will then find the carpark where there is a cafe and toilets.

From there, you can walk to the first crater. This takes about 10 minutes and then to the main crater.

The weather here varies a lot so if it’s too cloudy, you won’t get to see much.

This is why I recommend getting there early as the chances of good weather are higher in the morning.

The craters can sometimes have water inside (which is what you see on the brochures) and they feature amazing colours such as green or blue but most of the time they are dried up so don’t have your expectations too high.

You can then go around the area and admire the vegetation before heading back to your vehicle or the bus.

After a day filled with adventure, it’s time to unwind and relax. Head back to Cartago and take a stroll through the city center.

Afternoon: Cartago City

cartago city

On your way back from Irazu, stop at Cartago City. This is the former capital of Costa Rica and you can see that from the colonial architecture.

The city has a few points of interest such as the Basilica de los Angeles which is the main church in town. It’s one of the most important religious sites in Costa Rica and it’s very pretty.

Another interesting site is the ruins of Santiago Apostol Parish.

You can also wander around the city centre. It’s a nice place to go shopping. There are shops of just about anything.

You will also find fruit markets where you can sample one of the amazing exotic fruits on offer.

Once you are done, you can drive back to San José or take the train from the main station of Cartago back to San José.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 3: Tortuga Island

coco loco on tortuga island costa rica

This third day will be dedicated to relaxation and exploring one of the most beautiful islands in Costa Rica.

Technically, it would make sense to go at the end of the trip, on your way from Monteverde to Uvita but that would mean two boat trips two days in a row.

And since there are amazing day tours from San José, it would be worth doing it at the beginning of the trip.

Tortuga Island is a small paradise! It’s located in the Gulf of Nicoya, about 1 hour and 30 minutes boat ride from Puntarenas and the perfect place to relax and enjoy some water activities.

To get there, you can drive to Puntarenas and take the boat from there or opt for a day tour from San José.

I went to on this Tortuga Island tour by Inside Tours Costa Rica and it was amazing!

From San José, you’ll go to Puntarenas which takes about 1 hour 30 but you can break down the journey in 2 and have breakfast along the way.

view from the top of tortuga island costa rica

Once you get to Puntarenas, you can board the boat and start the journey. It’s a speed boat which means it can be a bit bumpy. Also it’s not really covered so make sure to take a rain jacket .

While this is technically a transfer, it feels more like a scenic boat ride since there are a lot of animals.

You will then stop at a snorkelling spot where you can see different fish and coral, before heading to the beach.

The beach is straight out of heaven. It has white sand, loads of coconut trees and the water is warm and clear.

You will have time to relax, go for a swim or do some water activities such as paddle boarding or kayaking.

You can also go on the hike to the view points. The entrance is located by the gift shop ($5) and it takes about 1 hour to complete.

Lunch is included in the tour so you don’t have to worry about it.

It’s also worth mentioning that there are many bars on the beach that sell piña coladas, coco locos and other drinks.

You can also hire a chair and umbrella.

Around 2PM, you will head back to Puntarenas and then San José.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 4: Puerto Viejo

bike in Puerto Viejo

It’s now time to officially leave San José and start discovering the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.

From San José, driving to Puerto Viejo takes about 4 hours. It’s easy and straightforward since you pretty much stay on the same road all the way.

Puerto Viejo is a small beach town known for its laid-back vibe and reggae music. It’s also located close to the Cahuita National Park which makes it a great base for exploring this beautiful area.

Once you get to Puerto Viejo (which should be around lunchtime if you left at about 8AM), go for lunch and explore the town.

The best thing to do here is to hire a bike. You can get one for about $7 a day and it’s definitely the best way to get around.

It’s very easy and since everything is flat, you can go to a lot of places.

If you want to go to a black sand beach, head to the northern side of the town. Make sure to put a lot of sunscreen on because you will burn a lot quicker on a black sand beach.

meal at playa cocles in puerto viejo

Another option is to ride your bike to Punta Uva. Altogether it takes about 30 minutes but if you go as soon as you arrive, you can stop at Playa Cocles.

You can stop in one of the local sodas such as Las Olas. They have very nice chicken and vegan bowls and tables by the beach.

You can then go to Cocles Beach for a bit and take your bikes back to Punta Uva.

Punta Uva is a very pretty beach and it’s very natural. There isn’t much here but the natural beauty is amazing.

You can find a kayak hiring place if you want to go and explore the mangroves. Otherwise, just enjoy your time on the beach and go for a swim. This is the Caribbean side which means the water is quite warm and the waves not too big.

Make sure you head back to Puerto Viejo at least 30 minutes before sunset as you don’t want to be on the road at night with no light.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 5: Cahuita National Park and BriBri Communities

View at the entrance of Cahuita National Park in Costa Rica

On the next day, it’s time to discover what Costa Rica is all about and head to your first national park.

Cahuita National Park is only 30 minutes drive from Puerto Viejo. It’s not as busy as other national parks such as Manuel Antonio, but yet just as beautiful.

If you’ve hired a car, you can drive there and park near one of the two entrances.

Another option is to book a day tour that includes Cahuita as well as the BriBri chocolate workshop and waterfall. Prices here.

I recommend getting to Cahuita at 8AM, when the park opens. That way you will beat the crowds and get to see more animals.

There is a 5km long walking path in the national park that you can do on your own or with a naturalist guide.

You can then head to the beach and enjoy a relaxing break.

TIP: If you want to go snorkeling in Cahuita, you have to book a tour since you’re not allowed to snorkel without a guide. Also, plastic (and therefore snorkel masks) are not allowed in the park.

You should be ready to go around noon and can exit the park and get lunch in Cahuita town.

cocoa bean roasting at the bribri community

After that, head to the BriBri village .

When you get there, you will start with a short introduction with a local BriBri who will show you their tools. You will then go around the rainforest and discover the unique flora and what they use it for.

At the end, you will do the chocolate workshop. This includes roasting the cocoa beans, grinding them and making a chocolate paste.

ma cuu waterfall in costa rica

To end the day, head to Ma-Cuu waterfall which is one of the BriBri waterfalls.

There is a carpark by the walking path. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the waterfall. Be careful since it can be a bit slippery.

You can swim at the waterfall but please note that there are no changing rooms.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 6: Tortuguero

boat to tortuguero

On day 6, it’s time to head to Tortuguero National Park. Tortuguero is a very unique place and is only accessible by boat or plane.

You should leave Puerto Viejo fairly early since it takes 4 to 5 hours to get there. You can take a boat from Caño Blanco or La Pavona.

The ride to the main island is very scenic and you will get to see a lot of animals including crocodiles and birds.

crocodile on the way to tortuguero

You should get to Tortuguero around lunchtime so get some food and you can then explore the island.

For the afternoon, there are two options. The first one is to chill for a bit and walk around the different cute shops.

The other one is to go to Cerro Tortuguero which is a hike with a viewpoint.

view from cerro tortuguero

To get there, you can book a tour which includes the boat and guide. The hike is not particularly hard but it does include a lot of steps.

Once you get to the top, you will discover stunning views over the national park, the canals and islands.

On the way down, take a bit of time to try to see some wildlife. There are a lot of sloths and monkeys around.

You can then head back to the main island and go for a walk on the beach.

Please note that due to the currents you can’t actually swim here, it’s only for walking.

baby turtle on tortuguero

If you are visiting between july and november though, it will be the turtle nesting and hatching season.

I highly recommend to book a turtle tour and go see them laying their eggs (or see the babies going into the sea if you’re visiting later in the year).

This is truly the experience of a lifetime and there aren’t that many places in the world where you can witness it!

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 7: Tortuguero and Sarapiquí

kayak on tortuguero

Early morning today because it’s time to go kayaking and discover the beauty of Tortuguero National Park!

In order to make the best of your experience, book this kayaking tour online.

It starts at 6AM (because it’s the best time to see the animals) from the pier so make sure to put your alarm on.

PRO TIP: There is a bakery on the main street near the pier where you can get a coffee and breakfast before you start the tour.

You will meet with your guide who will give you your kayak (could be a single or a double depending on the size of the group).

You will then head to the checkpoint at the entrance of the park. Please bear in mind that this has to be booked separately but you will be sent instructions.

The guide will then lead you to one of the canals. They go to different ones depending on how busy it is this morning.

Along the way, the guide will spot the animals for you and explain what they are as well as give you a few facts about them.

kayak tour on tortuguero

While some of them are quite easy to spot, others would be impossible to see without a guide.

We got to see a cayman during that tour and even when I was next to it I struggled to spot it so needless to say I would never have seen it otherwise.

Note: Costa Rica laws in regards to animals are very strict. Nobody is allowed to feed them so be reassured, the guides don’t know where the animals are because they feed them.

They are able to spot them because they know what type of tree each species likes and what their routines are.

While they never know where the animals will be, they are extremely knowledgeable and that’s what allows them to be very good spotters.

Also, they communicate with each other so if someone spots something interesting, they let the others know. That’s how they are able to see so many things.

The tour lasts 2 to 3 hours. It’s not particularly strenuous because you take it quite easy and there is no current on the canals.

You will head back around 8 or 9AM which then gives you time to head back to the hotel, pack your stuff and have breakfast.

boat to la pavona

Aim to get a boat back to La Pavona (you can arrange that with your accommodation) around 10:30 AM.

From Tortuguero to La Pavona, the ride is only about 1h30 and you can then get your transfer to Sarapiquí.

Note: If you hired a car, make sure you are heading back to the same place! La Pavona is the most convenient pier but it’s not the only one.

From La Pavona, it will take around 3 hours to get to Sarapiquí.

You can stop in Guapiles for lunch. There are loads of sodas on the side of the road which is very convenient but you can also drive in the town and stop somewhere.

Once you get to Sarapiquí, you can check into your accommodation and have a bit of a rest for today.

I particularly recommend Epic Adventure Lodge . They have incredibly cute houses and cabins including some with private swimming pools.

Epic Adventure Lodge pool

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 8: Sarapiquí and Bajos del Toro

white water rafting in costa rica

Today is an adventure and water day so make sure you take your swimming costume, water shoes and towels.

Start with a white-water rafting tour on the Sarapiquí river.

As previously mentioned, the Pacuare river might be the most famous of all when it comes to rafting but the Sarapiquí river is just as good!

You can book the tour online here (a couple of days in advance) and head to the meeting point where you will meet your guide for this morning.

Firstly, you will be given the equipment which includes a safety jacket and a helmet.

You will then listen to the instructions and can finally start.

Don’t worry, no need to be an experienced rafter for this tour. This tour is a class II-III meaning there are some rapids but nothing too crazy!

That said, if you’d like something a bit more challenging, you can also opt for a class IV tour.

white water rafting in sarapiqui

As you go down the river, the instructor will tell you exactly what to do. This means which side to paddle on, how to paddle and if you need to sit in the boat…

They also carry a medical kit so you are pretty safe.

The thing I loved the most about white-water rafting in Sarapiquí was actually the instructor. He was so knowledgeable and made us all feel so safe.

Also, he was very fun. They all are!

The tour lasts around 3 hours so you should finish around lunch time.

In the afternoon, head to Bajos del Toro. This area is known for all its waterfalls. This includes a few famous ones as well as loads of hidden gems.

blue falls in bajos del toro Costa rica

I personally recommend going to Blue Falls (and if you have time to Catarata del Toro).

To get to Blue Falls, add Catarata del Toro in Google Maps. This will bring you to the entrance of the waterfall where you can buy your ticket.

Both sets of waterfalls belong to the same person so you can buy your ticket for either (or both, they have a combo ticket for $25).

If you have time, do both but otherwise, I would recommend Blue Falls because it’s not just one waterfall but 9 of them. Also, their blue colour is so unique!

The entrance costs $15 which works out actually quite cheap considering all the waterfalls you get to see.

The walking trail is about 1 kilometre long to the first waterfall. It’s not a difficult hike, it’s very easy but it can get quite muddy.

blue falls in costa rica

Along the way, you will find several guides who will tell you where you should go (not only do they take the weather conditions into consideration but they also make sure that none of the waterfalls get too crowded).

You can swim in most of the falls at Blue Falls so make sure to go to a few and enjoy a swim!

Once you are done (you will probably spend 2 to 3 hours at Blue Falls), you can head back to the lodge.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 9: La Fortuna

Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna

Today, you’re leaving Sarapiquí to head to one of the most famous towns in Costa Rica, La Fortuna.

La Fortuna is located by Arenal volcano. It should take you a couple of hours to get there from Sarapiquí.I recommend leaving no later than 7AM so you get a full day in La Fortuna.

Once you arrive there, head straight to Arenal volcano. You need to pay the entrance fee for the park and can then do the volcano hike.

While you can’t actually go to the crater or anywhere near there, their hike is still very scenic. You get to see a lot of lava stones and discover the local flora.

Also, if the weather is nice, you will get incredible views over the volcano. You can do the hike by yourself or choose to hire a guide.

As always, having a guide means you will spot more animals.

We saw a lot of birds that day including toucans as well as racoons and butterflies.

You also learn about the volcano itself, eruptions and the history of the main eruption of 1968.

Fun fact: La Fortuna didn’t used to be called like that but since it was one of the towns that wasn’t destroyed during the eruption, it was renamed La Fortuna which in Spanish means The Lucky one.

lunch in la fortuna

Once you’re done with the hike, head back towards the town so you can grab lunch somewhere.

You can do so at the volcano but it will be a lot more expensive and not great food.

However, it’s true that it will save you some time.

You don’t have to go all the way back in town, there are loads of restaurants along the way.

Hanging Bridges in La Fortuna

Once you’ve eaten, head to Mistico Hanging bridges park.

This is where you can see some of the famous Costa Rican hanging bridges.

You need to book your ticket online here. The walk is very easy and mainly flat.

It is 3.2 km long and includes 15 bridges (6 hanging bridges). It should take about 2 hours to complete.

Click here to book your tickets

After that, it’s time to relax a bit and go to one of the hot springs (one of the perks of having a volcano nearby). Here you have two options.

If you want something free, you can go to El Choyin. It’s a natural hot spring where a lot of locals go. It’s free but a bit of a walk to get there.

It’s a very authentic experience but it can get quite busy and you don’t have any amenities.

If you want something more relaxing, you can opt for one of the private hot springs such as Termalitas del Arenal.

Hot Springs in La Fortuna

They charge $10 but include dozens of hot springs, slides, changing rooms and snack stands.

It is less authentic and natural, that’s for sure but a lot more comfortable and that’s something you may appreciate at that point of the trip. In the evening, I’d recommend going to Kappa sushi.

I know sushi does not sound very traditional but this restaurant created sushi with Costa Rican products such as plantains.

It was delicious and very unique.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 10: Monteverde

lake arenal

Start your day early again and head to Monteverde.

This is a very famous town in Costa Rica because of the cloud forest.

It should take you about 3 hours to get there from La Fortuna but remember, roads can be bumpy so it may take longer. I recommend leaving no later than 8AM but if you can go earlier than that it would be better.

Once you arrive at Monteverde, have some lunch and head to the Café Monteverde Farm & Roastery.

They offer coffee tours during which you learn everything about the plantation, the coffee itself and of course, get to try it!

green toucan in monteverde

In the evening, do one of the local night tours. This was one of the highlights of the trip!

At this point, you will have seen a lot of animals but there are a lot more to discover and they can only be seen at night which is why a night tour is such a good option.

You can book your tour online here. You will need to go to the site yourself but if you need transport, they can provide it at an extra fee.

Once you get there, you’ll be split into small groups and start exploring the cloud forest with your guide. You will each be given small torches so you can see where you are going.

The guide will go around and try to find some animals. All the guides work together and they share the locations of the animals so you get to see quite a lot.

Of course, it’s impossible to predict what you will actually see but here is the list of the ones we saw: sloths (mum and baby), scorpion, tarantula, toucans, various birds and insects.

I highly recommend it because you really get to see a lot and it was very fun to walk around at night.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 11: Zip-lining, Crocodile Bridge and Uvita

zipline in Monteverde

In the morning, it’s time for an adventure! Head to 100% Aventura to try one of the famous Costa Rican ziplines.

It’s only 15 minutes drive from Monteverde and they claim to have the longest zipline in Costa Rica.

You will get about 9 zip-lines plus 2 supermans and a tarzan swing.

It’s so much fun! It was one of my favourite activities so I can’t recommend it enough.

Ideally, you should book the 8AM slot since it lasts a couple of hours and you’ll need to drive after.

You can then take the road again to go to Uvita.

This cute coastal town on the Pacific side is located about 4 hours drive from Monteverde.

crocodile bridge

About half way through, you will reach the province of Puntarenas where you can stop at Crocodile bridge (that’s the bridge over the Tarcoles River).

As the name suggests, you can see crocodiles from there. You can stop on the side just before the bridge and walk from there to see the crocs.

Once you get to Uvita, it should be mid-afternoon which means you can head to the beach on the Ballena Marine National Park.

coconut in uvita at sunset

You can watch the sunset from there and let me tell you one thing, it’s one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen!

If you decide to go for a swim, make sure to go slowly and shuffle your feet since there could be stingrays.

🍴 RESTAURANT RECS: If you fancy eating Mexican food, head to La Choza de Alejo. It’s near Playa Chaman which means you can head there after the beach.

They have very good food and prices are reasonable. This was recommended to me by several locals and I have to admit that it didn’t disappoint.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 12: Uvita

marino park in uvita

Today you’ll spend the day in Uvita. There are several activities I recommend and that you can do in one day however, keep in mind that it depends on the tides so the order in which you will do it can vary.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what the tides will be on the day of your visit but it’s very easy to get that info online or via your hotel.

The first activity is surfing. Uvita is an absolute paradise for surfers, especially beginners.

The waves are very nice, pretty soft and there is a big gap between them which makes it a lot easier.

If you know how to surf already, you can simply hire a board from one of the local shops by the beach.

surfing in Uvita

Otherwise, I recommend booking a surfing lesson. The instructors are fantastic. They will explain everything you need to know and help you a lot.

When the conditions are good, most people manage to get up on the board and that’s quite an achievement for a first surfing lesson.

whale tail in uvita

The second activity is to walk to the whale tail.

The beach and bay in Uvita has the shape of a whale tail (hence the name of the national park) which is a pretty incredible natural feature.

No matter where you stay, you can walk to the tail. It’s a very unique thing to see.

This is the activity where you need to take the tides into consideration. Make sure you go early enough. Ideally, you can also time it so you see the water on either side coming together.

Please remember that for both surfing and the whale tail, you will need to pay the entrance fee to the national park. There are stations everywhere by the beach and it has to be paid by card. It works out around $7 with taxes.

Then the last activity I recommend is to be done mid to late afternoon and it’s a sunset horseback ride.

horse riding in uvita

I did it with Rancho La Merced which is located just outside of Uvita and this was my absolute favourite activity in Costa Rica.

The ranch is very nice, the staff is helpful and the horses are very well looked after.

When you get there, you will be assigned a horse depending on your weigh and level of experience.

You will then go on a trail, through a creek and on the beach.

The instructors will split the group into two groups, beginners and experienced riders. That way the experienced riders can canter on the beach.

It’s a very long beach so you can canter a lot!

Beginners in the meantime will walk (or trot if they want) and enjoy the sunset.

Whichever one you want, I can promise you that it’s a magical experience. Watching the sunset while riding a horse gives you a feel of freedom that can’t be beaten.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 13: Caño Island

turtle on cano island

The marine life in and around Uvita is absolutely incredible. The area is famous for its dolphin and whale populations as well as snorkelling spots.

If you are visiting during the whale season, going whale watching is a great option.

However, what I particularly recommend (all year round) is to book a boat trip to Caño Island.

This is one of the best places in Costa Rica for snorkelling and you will (most likely) get to see dolphins on your way as well as whales if you are visiting during the season.

You can book the trip here. It includes the entrance to the national park, the transfer to the island and 2 guided snorkelling tours.

cano island on costa rica

It’s such a magical experience because you get to see loads of fish and corals but sea turtles as well! We literally had a sea turtle swimming next to us!

Also, since you are with guides, they make sure you see as much as you can!

You also stop on the island for a bit. You can either stay on the beach or walk up to the view point.

The boat transfer is a bit long, it takes about 2 hours to get there but as I said, it’s very scenic and you get to see the dolphins and whales.

When you come back, you’ll probably want to chill for a bit. Snorkelling is tiring!

In the evening, I recommend going to Uvita Gastro Park. It’s an area with food stands, games and fairy lights.

They have different types of food and they are all very good. You will also find a bar with the usual drinks and unique cocktails.

Costa Rica Itinerary Day 14: Manuel Antonio and San José

baby sloth in manuel antonio

For your last day in Costa Rica, you will most likely want to head back to San José to catch your flight.

But on your way back, I recommend stopping at Manuel Antonio National Park.

This is both the smallest and most visited national park in Costa Rica. And it’s not hard to know why! It’s stunning and has everything. There are so many animals to see and the beach is beautiful.

Please note that Manuel Antonio sells out days in advance so make sure to book on the official website as soon as you can.

I also recommend booking a guided tour for this one. There really are a lot of animals and while you will be able to spot some of them by yourself, having a guide is a game changer.

Also, they have very big binoculars on tripods that you can use. They will also help you take photos.

We saw a baby sloth going down a tree and we would never have been able to see it by ourselves.

monkeys in manuel antonio

Once you are done with the guided tour, you can head to the beach and relax for a bit. If you are not in a rush to go back to San José you can even stay the entire day there.

There is a restaurant in the park so you can eat there.

PRO TIP: A lot of things are not allowed in the park including single use plastic.

When you feel like you are ready to go, you can head back to San José. If there is still time, you can check out one of the landmarks you haven’t seen on the first day but otherwise, just go for dinner and drinks.

For dinner, I particularly recommend the Jardin de Lolita. It’s also a food stand place and it has a very good atmosphere.

How to Get Around Costa Rica

Wondering how to visit Costa Rica? Getting around Costa Rica is easy, and there are different modes of transport.

The cheapest way is the bus, and the best way is to rent a car. You can also use taxis, book private or shared transfers, or join organized tours.

During our travels, we always use  Discover Cars  for car rentals. Because they always offer the best deals and provide free cancellation 48 hours before your reservation.

We have a complete guide to how to rent a car in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica by car

The best way to get around Costa Rica is by car, as you can easily reach the best places and hidden gems.

We did this 14-day Costa Rica Itinerary by rental car and enjoyed exploring the sights at our own pace.

You don’t need a 4×4, but a car with higher ground clearance is worth booking for your Costa Rica road trip!

The driving will make this Costa Rica Itinerary much easier and more flexible.

TIP During the high season (December to April), car rental prices can be extremely high!

Therefore, we strongly recommend that you book your car in advance! Check car rental prices and availability here.

Costa Rica Itinerary by car

Travel by local bus and save money on your trip to Costa Rica! Although you can’t get to the stunning waterfalls or best beaches by bus, you’ll need to take a taxi, shuttle, or rent a bike, which will also increase the budget.

Another disadvantage is that the journey time by bus is much longer than by car. Some routes have no direct bus services, and you need to change to another bus to reach your destination.

Bus timetables change often, so always check the current departure times!

TIP If you want to book bus tickets or transfers, use Bookaway.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica

Costa Rica has two seasons: a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from May to November.

The cheapest time to visit Costa Rica is from May to November during the wet (green) season when you can avoid the crowds and high prices.

But the best time to visit Costa Rica is usually from December to April during the dry season when the weather is pleasant and rainfall is rare.

As it is the most visited period in Costa Rica, you can expect high prices during Christmas and Easter.

TIP In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation and tours in advance.

The rainiest months in Costa Rica are September and October. Although tropical rain can occur all months.

We did this 2-week Costa Rica Itinerary in April, and the weather was fantastic, only raining a few times.

Puerto Viejo’s temperatures are warm all year round. But Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast has different weather, usually more rainy and humid.

The best time to visit Puerto Viejo is from February to April and September to October.

Is Costa Rica Safe?

Yes, traveling to Costa Rica is safe! Costa Ricans are very friendly. However, small thefts and pickpockets can occur at the beaches, national parks, or parking areas.

Take care of your valuables! Always lock your car and keep your belongings in the car boot or your hotel room when parking.

We found driving in Costa Rica safe and easy, so we highly recommend renting a car in Costa Rica.

Avoid walking at night and taking taxis alone, especially in San Jose!

During the rainy season in Costa Rica, roads can be slippery, or there may be animals and potholes on the road.  So always drive carefully!

Beware of rip currents!

Don’t forget to buy travel insurance for your Costa Rica Itinerary! We always choose  SafetyWing  for our travels.

Where to see sloths in Costa Rica

As our flight arrived in the evening from Mexico to San Jose, we decided to spend the night at the airport and pick up our car the next day.

If you are traveling by car, you should download an offline map and get a local sim card with internet to drive to your destination or hotel without any problems.

There is no SIM card vendor at Juan Santamaria International Airport. But you can get one at any supermarket or phone company in Costa Rica.

A shuttle minivan from La Fortuna to Monteverde starts from 35 USD. The journey time is 3.5 hours, depending on traffic.

The cheapest way to get from La Fortuna to Monteverde is by bus, but the travel time is very long as there is no direct bus service.

The journey takes around 8 hours, and the bus fare costs 9 USD. First, you have to travel from La Fortuna to Tilaran and from there to Monteverde.

The most comfortable way to travel between Arenal and Monteverde is to take the Van-Boat-Van transfer. Two daily transfers are available from La Fortuna to Monteverde at 8 AM and 2 PM.

Total travel time is 3.5-4 hours and 36 USD per person for one way.

It’s good to know that Monteverde is one of the wettest places in Costa Rica, so unexpected rains may occur during the dry season.

We did not have good weather when we were in Monteverde because it rained a lot. The weather is usually colder in Monteverde, so bring a sweater, long trousers, socks, and a light raincoat.

Costa Rica ms1

Guanacaste:

One of the most popular provinces in Costa Rica, it is called the tropical paradise. Located in the far northwest corner of Costa Rica, it is not only diverse, but exotic as well. It lies between two mountains with a beautiful sandy coast. Its hot and dry climate makes it a popular location for surfers trying to escape the cold winter months in the northern latitude.

Costa Rica ms2

Manuel Antonio National Park:

This is the smallest of Costa Rica’s national parks, but it is considered one of its best. It is recognized for its vast biodiversity and is home to many of Costa Rica’s endangered species. It features lush tropical forests, lagoons, mangroves, and white sandy beaches. You’ll find well-marked trails that allow visitors to explore freely, but there they limit the amount of visitors because of the park’s popularity

Costa Rica ms3

Arenal Volcano:

Currently lying dormant, this massive, ancient volcano was the country’s most active volcano for over 40 years. Looming over the landscape, Arenal dominates the horizon in the rainforest. Around the volcano you can visit the wildlife refuge, take a sky trek, raft the river, or repel a waterfall.

Costa Rica ms4

Tortuguero National Park:

This Park is unique as it is better traveled by boat rather than by foot. There are boat tours or kayak and canoe rentals available for visitors. There is a trail that travels along the beach where you can observe turtle nesting in their natural habitat. Other than turtles you will also find a variety of animals here such as jaguars, macaws, tapirs, and over 300 species of birds, reptiles, and other mammals.

Destination Must-Do's

Costa Rica md1

Lake Arenal Cruise:

This vast and pristine lake sits at the base of the majestic Arenal Volcano. It is considered the country’s most spectacular lake offering numerous water activities and of course a beautiful view. They have a multitude of cruises such as a volcano viewing and nature tour, romantic sunset cruise, fishing excursion, or bird watching cruises.

Tamarindo Beach:

Once a sleepy fishing village, it has grown into the area’s most developed and accessible tourist town. This sun-drenched setting consists of soft beige sand, tide pools, and some of the most stunning sunsets. The beach hosts several international surf competitions. Besides surfing, the main activities to do here are sport fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, and horseback riding.

Costa Rica md3

Monteverde Cloud Forest (Hanging Bridges):

The skywalk is a combination of suspension bridges and walking trails that bring you through the lush Montverde rainforest. There are six bridges and the trails are about a mile and a half long. Local guides lead you on the tour teaching you about ecology. The canopy of this tropical forest was widely unknown due to its towering height until these suspension bridges were created and opened up a whole new world to visitors.

Costa Rica md4

Coffee Plantation:

Costa Rica is known for its impeccable coffee. The coffee bean is socially, economically and politically important to the country. The highland areas surrounding San Jose and the Tilaran Mountain range is where you will find many coffee plantations as they have the ideal climate for growing coffee. To fully understand the importance, take a plantation tour that gives you a chance to try the world’s freshest cup of coffee.

With some free time in San Jose I would visit the popular Spirogyra Butterfly Garden, a small piece of paradise.

When packing, think in layers to account for temperature changes. I also highly recommend a raincoat or poncho and sturdy shoes you can get wet. It’s called a rainforest for a reason!

Costa Rica e3

The local currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colon. US dollars are also widely accepted in most tourist areas, though colones may be required for some small purchases.

Two Weeks In Costa Rica: The Ultimate Costa Rica Itinerary

Catarata Del Toro, Costa Rica

From the epic volcanoes at Arenal and zip lining in Monteverde, to the wildlife on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, it’s time for the ultimate two weeks in Costa Rica.

I’ve just returned from my SECOND trip to Costa Rica. While I saw a lot on my first visit in 2014, it definitely left me wanting more! A few weeks ago I received my Costa Rica itinerary and wow did it look AMAZING.

The big attraction? The fact it would take me to places I’d never been before, including Corcovado National Park – one of the world’s top destinations for spotting wildlife.

Toucan

I know a lot of you choose to spend two weeks in Costa Rica, which I would say is the perfect amount of time to get a feel for the country. So I figured the most useful post I could write was a big fat Costa Rica itinerary – combining the best of the best from my two trips.

From the incredible volcanoes close to La Fortuna and the wildlife of Puerto Viejo and Corcovado, to the beaches of the Pacific and Caribbean , beautiful views in Orosi and Naranjo and adventures including zip lining and white water rafting, this really is the best way to spend two weeks in Costa Rica!

Planning your trip to Costa Rica? Here are a few quick highlights:

List Image

Two Weeks In Costa Rica: The Best Costa Rica Itinerary

To design this Costa Rica itinerary, I’ve selected my top seven places from both of my trips and suggested how many days to spend in each. Obviously, with travel time, you might need a few extra days if you want to see ALL of them, but it’s a good starting point if you’re planning to spend two weeks in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is ALL about nature. While some areas are becoming a little overrun with tourists during high season, there are still plenty of great places that still feel ‘secret’.

I’ve included a nice mix in this Costa Rica itinerary. I think you’d regret it if you don’t visit a few parts that feel truly off the beaten track.

Map: two weeks in costa rica.

I’ve marked all the key spots from my Costa Rica itinerary on this handy map…

La Fortuna: 2 Days

One of my favourite spots on my Costa Rica itinerary! For me, this area really is the best of the best in Costa Rica. The looming 1,670m peak of Arenal Volcano is easily one of the most impressive sights you’ll see in the whole country.

I’d recommend basing yourself in the town of La Fortuna, which has the volcano as its backdrop. There’s a mix of accommodation in the area, from luxurious hotels with private pools, to hostels perfect for backpackers and solo travellers.

Along with adventures around the volcano (including some lovely hot springs close by) don’t miss a trip to La Fortuna waterfall. It’s in a beautiful location in the middle of the jungle, but from the second you start the descent, you’ll hear the sounds of the plummeting weight of water. The waterfall is 65m high, and while the water is cool, you can take a dip if you’re feeling brave!

Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

Monteverde: 2 Days

You’ll have heard about Costa Rica’s ‘cloud forests’ and Monteverde is THE place to see some of the country’s most unique scenery. Walk the Sky Walk (six hanging suspension bridges) and you’ll feel first hand what it’s like to be submerged in the low hanging mist and clouds within the lush forest. There’s also the sky tram – gondolas that glide right through the epic scenery.

Skybridge in Monteverde Cloud Forest

If you like adrenaline, spend a day at 100% Aventura Extreme taking on the longest zip lines in Central America, finishing with the Mega Tarzan Swing. The swing is one of the scariest things I’ve done to date as it involves a free fall of 35m, before you swing over 30m from side to side!

The zip lines are a lot of fun, and make a change from the hiking and exploring that you’ll no doubt be including in your Costa Rica two week itinerary

Ziplining in Monteverde, Costa Rica

Naranjo / Zarcero: 1 Day

After some of the more extreme activities, I’d recommend a night at Chayote Lodge up in the hills above San Jose. It’s probably not an area that features on many Costa Rica itineraries, but this is one of those special ‘secret’ spots away from the tourists.

For me, San Jose isn’t an amazing city, but you’re likely to visit it as part of your trip, whether that’s to fly in and out of the airport, or to pass through as you venture from one part of the country to another.

Sunrise from Chayote Lodge, Naranjo, Costa Rica

The accommodation at Chayote Lodge is stunning, designed around the old coffee receiving stations. The coffee theme continues through the interiors where you’ll find old coffee sacks for wall hangings, a giant coffee bean table and of course, delicious fresh coffee for breakfast!

Yet, however much I love coffee, it’s the views from Chayote Lodge that make me recommend it. Three volcanoes, layers and layers of stunning morning mist and epic sunsets, along with lush gardens filled with more hydrangeas than I’ve ever seen in my life – it’s just gorgeous.

Chayote Lodge, Naranjo, Costa Rica

No doubt you’ll be visiting a few waterfalls during your two weeks in Costa Rica, and at 90m Catarata Del Toro is one of Costa Rica’s most impressive. While you can see it from just beyond the visitor centre, I’d recommend the trek to the base of it. It’s tiring but worth it, especially once you feel the spray and the force of the water.

Catarata Del Toro, Costa Rica

Also, as the region has coffee at its heart, I’d recommend booking onto an Espiritu Santo Coffee Tour  where you can learn how coffee plants are transformed into the morning cuppa you’re used to. It’s fascinating to see the plants and processes up close. You’ll never look at a cappuccino in the same way again!

Corcovado national park: 3 days.

Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula has been on my bucket list for a while! In terms of wildlife, it’s one of Costa Rica’s top spots, and let’s face it, Costa Rica is one the best country’s in the world for seeing wild animals in their natural habitats.

From whales and turtles, to monkeys, snakes and frogs, there’s SO much to see here, plus it’s also paradise for bird lovers.

It’s not the kind of park to explore alone, so book onto a tour (hotels will be able to recommend local wildlife guides), set your alarm for 4am, and head out early for an experience you’ll never forget.

Ancient trees in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica

Across the day we spotted all four of Costa Rica’s varieties of monkey (squirrel, spider, howler and white-faced capuchin), coatis, agoutis, macaws, Halloween crabs, and learnt all about the park’s impressive trees, sea turtles and more. I loved it! We didn’t see any sloths sadly, but they’re often chilling out in the trees here.

Tree frog

Set in the rainforest, Lapa Rios has 17 wooden bungalows, each with terraces overlooking the ocean. There are no glass windows, only nets, so you’ll fall asleep listening to the howls of the howler monkeys, croaks of frogs and more.

It’s somewhere you’ll feel truly immersed in Costa Rica’s incredible nature, especially when you spot macaws from the breakfast table, monkeys on your terrace, or find a frog on your door (true story!!)

Check availability and latest prices at Lapa Rios

My room at Lapa Rios, Osa Peninsula

If you’re spending two weeks in Costa Rica, I’d recommend around three days in the Corcovado region. As it’s such a remote area to get to, check out the flights that run from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez. Not only will it save you time, but you’ll also be treated to stunning views like these…

Views on the flight from Puerto Jimenez to San Jose, Costa Rica

Orosi: 2 Days

South of San Jose, Orosi is home to rainforests, volcanoes and rivers. It’s also one of Costa Rica’s most historic regions, where you’ll find the oldest Catholic Church still in use in the country.

This is another spot I would say is a little on the secret side. It’s not experiencing the mass tourism of Arenal and Monteverde, and is a great place to escape the crowds if you’re trying to experience the best of Costa Rica in two weeks.

While nearby Tapanti National Park (aka the wettest spot in the country, with rain approx. 360 days a year!) is a beautiful place to go hiking and exploring, I’d recommend taking things up a few notches with an adrenaline-fuelled white water rafting trip down the river.

The river in Orosi

It was my first time rafting, and I was really nervous as I waited by the edge of the river listening to the safety briefing. The guides were enthusiastic and fun, and I started to feel at ease… until I hopped on the raft and we set off!! The water was flowing so fast, and almost immediately we reached one of the trickiest spots on the entire course.

After a thorough soaking, I relaxed into the experience, whooping and screaming as I paddled. I loved it and would say it’s one of my favourite experiences from the trip!

White Water Rafting in Orosi, Costa Rica

Orosi is also a wonderful region for relaxation, with my favourite spot being Hacienda Orosi – a thermal mineral spa with absolutely spectacular views. Up in the hills, with low hanging clouds and several thermal pools, it’s a great place to unwind after lots of outdoor adventures.

Hacienda Orosi, Costa Rica

If you’re looking for somewhere truly unique to stay, I’d recommend Queveri . This eco lodge is located in the mountains overlooking Orosi and has impressive views of Irazu volcano, waterfalls and more. There are plenty of hiking routes nearby, plus wildlife right on the doorstep including pumas, mountain lions, monkeys and coatis!

The owner will treat you like you’re part of the family too. It’s a lovely experience, although I’ll warn you now, it’s a steep and bumpy drive to get there!

Check availability and latest prices at Queveri

Views from Queveri, near Orosi

Puerto Viejo De Talamanca: 3 Days

Then it’s time to head to the Caribbean coast to experience a totally different side to the country. To be honest, rastas and reggae wasn’t something I naturally associated with Costa Rica, but when you’re in Puerto Viejo you’ll feel like you’ve landed on a Caribbean island.

Expect chilled daytimes and a bit of a party after dark. It’s an area popular with backpackers too, so a great place to base yourself if you’re travelling solo. In fact, this is a must-visit if you’re putting together a Costa Rica backpacking itinerary, as it’s one of the best beach towns in Costa Rica .

I think it’s a great area to round off your two weeks in Costa Rica, as it’s another fab region to spot wildlife. Similar to Corcovado, Cahuita National Park’s rainforest sits right on the beach close to Puerto Viejo.

There you can spot all the animals you’d dream of seeing in Costa Rica including toucans, sloths, monkeys, lizards, iguanas, snakes, giant crickets, leaf cutter ants and more.

Snake in Cahuita, Costa Rica

Another amazing place for wildlife is the  Jaguar Rescue Centre . Nope, it’s not a home for jaguars, but a refuge for sick, unwanted or underdeveloped wild animals.

I love the backstory of this place. It was set up by a couple of biomedical scientists from Europe who moved to Costa Rica for a change of pace. Little did they know, as soon as they moved to the area, locals heard they could help animals and turned up on the doorstep with sick monkeys, owls with broken wings, and blind crocodiles! They decided to set up the rescue centre and it’s been expanding ever since.

Sloth in Costa Rica

When I visited a few years ago I was invited to sit inside one of the monkey enclosures while spider and squirrel monkeys played around. It was also amazing to see sloths up close!

I hope these suggestions help with planning your two weeks in Costa Rica. If you’re visiting for longer, I’d recommend adding in places such as Manuel Antonio National Park, Tortuguero, and some of the country’s beautiful beaches to your Costa Rica itinerary.

Pura Vida, Costa Rica

Useful Info For Planning A Trip To Costa Rica

Currency: While colones are the local currency in Costa Rica, lots of places will accept US dollars too. If you pay in dollars, you’re likely to receive colones as change. On my recent trip I noticed a lot more places accepted credit cards and contactless payments.

Packing advice: With so many climates and landscapes, you’ll want to plan your packing carefully. I’d recommend reading my Costa Rica packing guide before you go. Lots of extras you might not have thought about.

‘Pura Vida’ is a way of life in Costa Rica! I heard it used as hello / goodbye / thank you. Translating literally as the pure life, but the meaning is more about a good life, a relaxed life and a happy/content life. Slip it into conversation and you’ll certainly impress the locals!

Do you need to speak Spanish to travel around Costa Rica? No, but it will certainly help in more remote areas. As tourism is a huge part of Costa Rica’s economy, lots of guides, drivers and shopkeepers speak English. I’m sure after two weeks in Costa Rica you’ll have a few key Spanish phrases at your fingertips too.

Is Costa Rica safe? I think it’s very safe. Compared to its neighbours, Costa Rica is an extremely peaceful country. It doesn’t even have an army! People are warm, friendly and helpful, plus there’s a huge passion for the country’s nature and landscapes – the Costa Ricans really want to preserve their country, as they know more than anyone else, that it’s a very special place.

Travel: While Costa Rica isn’t a big country to drive around, some of the roads are windy, rugged and bumpy, so what looks like a 2-hour drive, could end up taking 4. If you’re short on time, take a look at internal flights to speed journeys up.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my Costa Rica itinerary and it helps you plan your holiday! Whether you’re spending two weeks in Costa Rica, or several months exploring at a slower pace, have an amazing time, and feel free to comment below if you have any questions!

Big thanks to Visit Costa Rica for inviting me back. You’ll find plenty more info to help you plan your travels on the Visit Costa Rica website.

That toucan is so beautiful! I love all the colors they have on their beaks.

I know Megan – so amazing to see them up close! I loved all the wildlife I saw on this trip!

Costa Rica is one of my bucket list destinations!

These photos are stunning and it looks like you had the best time.

Thanks Jess – I really hope you make it there soon! I loved it!

Hi Chloe! I’m from Costa Rica, actually from Naranjo. I have a friend that is coming over so I was looking for the best places to take him, this helped me a lot. Thank you so much for that amazing content and all the love you are giving to my country. I wish you keep doing what you love, best of wishes. Pura vida ?❤

Thank you for reading Kris! So happy you enjoyed the post. Naranjo was gorgeous – happy memories of being there 🙂

Amazing stuff Chloe, this has helped a bunched! Just out of interest, what time of year did you travel there? I’ve found some pretty cheap flights for the end of June and am aware that it’s the rainy season, but I’ve heard there’s a ‘veranillo’ around then so I might be lucky with the weather. It’s either that or postpone until next year which I don’t want to do 🙁 Thoughts?

Hey Sonny – thank you! I’ve been in November and October before and while on both trips there was some rain, it wasn’t crazy or anything! To be honest with somewhere like CR, the rain is part of what makes the flora and fauna so amazing! I’ve not been at other times of year though, so can’t vouch for those… Have a great trip!

How did you get around the island? Did you rent a car, driver or fly?

Hi Donna – we caught buses and planes across Costa Rica. It’s not an island though!

Amazing itinerary hoping to visit next year and hopefully cross over to panama too! I cannot wait ? xx

Have an amazing time Bethan. It’s such a special place!

Amazing blog! Quick question: Why wasn’t Tamarindo included in this itinerary? Thanks!

Because there are just SO many places, I couldn’t include them all. That’s another great option though if it fits with your route.

This is a great 14 days in Costa Rica itinerary, going to Tamarindo , Monteverde , Bijagua and Rincon de la Vieja / Curubande , created specifically for repeat travelers to Costa Rica who have not been to the Guanacaste province and are looking for more than just a beach vacation.

14 Days in Costa Rica Itinerary

If that sounds like something you want to do for your 2nd (or 3rd) trip to Costa Rica, check out the 14 day Costa Rica itinerary below! It even works for a first time trip if you’re interested in more mountains with a sprinkling of beach time.

I created this itinerary for my parents, who visited for the third time but have not explored the Tilaran mountain ranges. They were more keen on mountains and hiking rather than beach.

If you want to end your trip at the beach, start backwards with Rincon de la Vieja first, Bijagua, Monteverde and then Tamarindo.

Best Time of the Year for this Itinerary

For this itinerary, we did it with my parents at the beginning of September, during the heart of rainy season . Although Bijagua and Monteverde are high elevation areas that tend to rain more (read more about Costa Rica weather here), we wanted them to experience the tropical cloud forest and climate. Plus, being from Washington state, they didn’t mind rain or cold.

You may want to do this itinerary in dry season if you don’t want to deal with any rain and you want the best weather possible. The best months would be February and March for the best weather for sunny skies and clear weather. October, November and December may be quite rainy for Bijagua and Monteverde. Tamarindo and Rincon de la Vieja are in the dry tropical forest, so those areas tend to be drier and hotter.

Pro tip: Make sure you bring long pants, socks, closed toed shoes, a jacket and rain jacket (any time of the year) for Monteverde. Read our packing list for more information.

For wildlife

If you visit in March or April, you have good chances to see the Resplendant Quetzals in Monteverde. But you won’t really be able to see marine wildlife in the Gulf of Papagayo unless you visit during January or February . The best time to see marine animals like humpback whales and turtles is August and September.

In September, we saw turtles, dolphins, monkeys, sloths, tons of toucans and birds.

For budget/crowds

If you’re on a budget and don’t want to be around tons of people, avoid the high season months December – April and July . Shoulder season months ( May and November) or rainy season (August, September and October) are the best.

Read our guide to visiting Costa Rica during the rainy season here.

Getting around this 14 days in Costa Rica itinerary

Here is our interactive map of the 14 days in Costa Rica sample itinerary. You can use the sidebar to sort through the filters.

We have a car and for this itinerary, it was the best way to get around to maximize the time. These destinations are a hard to get by bus and we like to be on our own schedule. Plus a car is way more comfortable for my parents who are in their 60’s as we could stop whenever we wanted to and stay at hotels away from the town center.

Since the average driving times between the destinations is around 3 hours one way, a car is the best way to be flexible, enjoy the views and get around in a timely matter. We took our Mitsubishi Montero Sport (7 pax, 4×4) but you can rent a mid-size SUV for 4 people plus luggage. A high clearance car is recommended for Monteverde so a 4×2 SUV in dry season or 4×4 SUV in rainy season.

Take advantage of our Costa Rica car rental discount here! And read our driving in Costa Rica and renting a car in Costa Rica tips here.

International Airport to fly into

Guanacaste Airport (airport code LIR) is the airport to fly into. It’s a 1 hour drive from Guanacaste Airport to Rincon de la Vieja and 1.5 hours to Tamarindo. The drive from the airport to Tamarindo is on a well paved road with plenty of signage.

Day 1 – 3: Tamarindo

Tamarindo is a great starting point for this 14 days in Costa Rica itinerary since it’s a popular beach town with lots of hotels, restaurants and all the services and amenities. The beach is beautiful and is a great way to get your taste of a touristic beach town in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. If you want to be in a lively beach town that’s walkable and has a lively nightlife, Tamarindo is your best option, especially for families, backpackers, surfers, friends and younger travelers.

14 days in Costa Rica - Tamarindo

For those looking for a less touristy destination, head to Playa Avellanas . This is one of our favorite beaches in Costa Rica and it’s way more chill than Tamarindo. It’s not as developed but it’s only a 30 minute drive from Tamarindo. Avellanas has a few hotels and many vacation rentals. For luxury travelers, you can stay at JW Marriott Guanacaste or rent one of the fancy houses in Hacienda Pinilla.

Another more low key beach is Playa Grande. There are only a couple of houses there but many nice vacation rentals. This beach is gorgeous, fantastic for surfing and long walks.

Where to stay in Tamarindo

There are many lodging options in Tamarindo from hostels, standard hotels, bungalows, cabinas, vacation rentals, houses and apartments. If you are looking for a luxury beach front resort, read our review of the Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort . Want to book a room? Contact us to assist you.

Other hotel options are Ocho Artisan Bungalows (great for couples), La Palpa (modest, beachfront), Hotel Mar Rey (modest, right in center of town), Wyndham Tamarindo (hill top, ocean view, back of town) and In the Shade Hotel (adult only, back of town with pool, coworking spaces).

  • Snorkeling or sunset catamaran: You can take a snorkeling trip or sunset catamaran sailing trip. Snorkeling isn’t possible right off shore on Tamarindo beach however, so you will need to book a snorkeling tour. You can also do a 30 minute kayak ride to Isla Capitan and snorkel there (best in low tide).
  • Surfing: Tamarindo is famous for surfing due to its long breaks and constant waves. Take a surf lesson (~$55 USD for 2 hour group lesson) to learn how to ride the waves.
  • Mangrove boat ride: As Tamarindo is separated by Playa Grande by a large estuary in the Marino Las Baulas National Park, visitors can take a boat ride through the estuary to see animals such as monkeys, crocodiles, herons, and much more.

Our recommendation is a private boating trip in Playas del Coco where you can also visit hidden, boat access only beaches (1.5 hour drive one way). For something right in Tamarindo, there are several catamaran and sailing tours like Dream Chaser and Blue Dolphin. These are open sailing tours and the sunset tour is the most popular. Flamingo is another great place for snorkeling , fishing and scuba diving (40 minute drive).

You can read about more things to do in Tamarindo here.

Sample Tamarindo Itineraries

Here is an idea of what to do during your 2 full days in Tamarindo.

This is the day you land so relax, settle in, walk around town, watch the sunset on the beach. Get drinks at the Cata Agave bar and then have dinner at Pikatas, El Be or Matapalo Beachfront.

On your first full day, you don’t need to wake up super early as it’s your day to enjoy the beach and town. Around mid morning, take a boat tour through the estuary in Tamarindo. It’s about 2 hours on a boat and around $45 USD per person. You can walk directly to the boats by the Marino Las Baulas National Park entrance on Tamarindo beach to arrange your tour with the boat captains.

Have lunch after the tour at Volcano Brewing Company for typical American bar food or Soda Buffet El Estero for local food.

After lunch, lay by the beach, swim, tan, have a cold coconut and relax. You can also take a surf lesson (around 2 hours, $50 USD per person for a group lesson). Then watch the sunset on the beach and relax.

For dinner, head to Mercadito open food court for a laid back dinner. For something a bit nicer/fancier, Pangas, Dragonfly, Naans & Curries or Agua Salada are excellent options.

Go on a snorkeling/sailing/boating trip to see the beautiful coastlines and waters of the Guanacaste province!

If you book the private beach hop and snorkeling tour in Playas del Coco , the morning is best for snorkeling. Full days are also an option if you want to have the ultimate boating and snorkeling day.

If you don’t want to drive that much, book a shared afternoon catamaran tour from Tamarindo. The sunset tour is the most popular.

You can also go on a fishing trip. They will normally let you keep what you catch and you can have the restaurants cook it (check El Be or El Chiringuito).

Day 4 – 7: Monteverde

On days 4-7 in this 14 days in Costa Rica itinerary, you’ll visit Monteverde. Monteverde is a rural farming area up in the Tilaran mountain range, famous for its cloud forests, hiking and birding. It’s also a popular spot for adventure ziplining tours where you can tarzan swing, bungee jump and zipline over the cloud forest!

14 days in Costa Rica - Monteverde

The drive from Tamarindo to Monteverde is about 3.5 hours total. We recommend to leave around 11 AM (hotel check out time usually) so you can get to Monteverde in the light before dark as it can take you around 5 hours with stops and slow driving. We do not recommend driving this route at night. You can read more about Monteverde road conditions here.

Where to stay

Monteverde has nice choices for budget lodging, cute mountain lodges and modest cabins.

We have stayed at different hotels in Monteverde: El Establo Mountain Hotel , Monteverde Country Lodge, Hotel Poco a Poco , Sibu Lodge and Natura Lodge . Use our 5% promo code “mytanfeet” to save $$ at the following hotels: Hotel Poco a Poco , Monteverde Country Lodge and Sibu Lodge .

  • Hike the cloud forest: This is a must! The cloud forests are extremely vulnerable and rare in the world, housing hundreds of flora and fauna that don’t live outside these conditions. Monteverde and Santa Elena are the two most popular cloud forest reserves. Read our guide to the Monteverde cloud forest reserves here.
  • El Tigre Waterfalls Monteverde : Awesome waterfall hike! 8 kilometer (5 mile) trail passing 6-8 waterfalls and hanging bridges.
  • Bird watching: Monteverde is an excellent place to see birds, particularly the Resplendant Quetzal. During the months of February – July, you have great chances to see these brilliant birds. Take a guided birding walk Curi Cancha Reserve for the best Quetzal opportunities.
  • Coffee tour: Monteverde’s climate and fertile soil makes it an ideal location for coffee. Visit the El Trapiche or San Luis coffee plantation to learn all about the process of growing, harvesting and processing coffee. They also offer sugar cane and cacao presentations and you can buy high quality coffee from the plantation.
  • Ziplining: To add some adventure to the trip, go on an extreme canopy tour like 100% Aventura where they also have a 45 meter tarzan swing. Or head to Selvatura Park with an optional Superman cable and tarzan swing or Treetopia with breathtaking views of the cloud forest.
  • Hanging bridges walk: Go on a self guided walk through the hanging bridges so you can get high up in the cloud forest. Many adventure parks have their own, such as Selvatura, Treetopia and 100% Aventura so you can do multiple activities in one day.
  • Free spots: Discover some cool local spots without spending much money. Read more: free/cheap things to do in Monteverde

Check out our Monteverde tours booking page if you want to do guided nature walks, night walks, birdwatching and much more!

Sample Monteverde Itineraries

Day 4: You will be arriving in Monteverde in late afternoon after driving from Tamarindo. After checking into your hotel, relax and check out Santa Elena town. Drive up to Cerro Pinocho to see the sunset if you have a 4×4 and if the weather is good. Have dinner at Restaurante Sabor Tico for delicious local food (try their beef stew “Olla de carne”).

Day 5: Spend a full day at one of the adventure parks for a fun day of ziplining, hiking and nature! You’ll zip through the cloud forest, walk the hanging bridges and get up close with the cloud forest. We highly recommend Selvatura Park for the ultimate 1 day experience as you can also visit their butterfly garden, sloth center and reptile/amphibian exhibit.

After your day at Selvatura Park, have dinner at your hotel or grab some yummy tacos at Taco Taco.

Day 6: Do the full Trapiche tour (sugar cane/coffee/cacao, around 2 hours) in the morning at 10 AM. For lunch, head to Orchid Cafe. Afterwards, check out the art galleries or souvenir shops around Santa Elena to do some souvenir shopping.

Then relax in the afternoon and watch the sunset at the Mirador Valle Escondido Preserve right in town. For dinner, head to Tramonti for delicious pizza and pasta or Taco Taco for yummy tacos.

Day 7: Go for an early morning birding tour at Curi Cancha Reserve. If you aren’t interested in birdwatching, then visit the Santa Elena Reserva Bosque Nuboso or the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve for a self guided walk (~2-3 hours). Afterwards, get brunch/lunch at Stella’s. Relax for the rest of the day and head to Mirador San Luis to watch the sunset. If you’re not interested in birdwatching, visit El Tigre Waterfalls Monteverde to hike and see waterfalls.

Day 8 – 11: Bijagua

Bijagua is a small farming town up in the northern highlands, right at the border of Guanacaste and Alajuela. This area is famous for the Tenorio Volcano National Park where Rio Celeste (sky blue river) is.

Rio Celeste

The drive from Monteverde to Bijagua via the Interamericana highway is about 2 hours.

Casitas Tenorio B&B , Rio Celeste Hideawa , La Carolina Lodge (rural farming cabins) and Heliconias Rainforest Lodge . The Hideaway Hotel is very close to the entrance of Tenorio Volcano National Park and is a luxury hotel.

  • Hike Rio Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park. You can do a self guided hike to the river as the trail is well laid out and easy to follow. It’s a 25 minute drive from Bijagua to the national park entrance. Important thing to note: if you’re visiting in the very rainy months of September – January, sometimes the park closes due to intense rain and floods or the water isn’t as blue. This is why we stayed for 3 full days so we could see how the weather was in the morning. If you visit during that time of year, be flexible!
  • Bird watching: Bijagua has a great number of unique birds due to the type of forest around and you can see hummingbirds, 3 species of toucans, all sorts of tanagers and other birds.
  • See sloths at Finca Verde: This family owned property has small cabins, a garden and natural surrounding forests home to many sloths. Great place to see toucans, frogs and sloths in the wild.
  • Swim in the river: You can’t swim in Rio Celeste in the national park but there are spots outside the park that are open to the public by the bridge. We spent a day swimming in the river at the free Rio Celeste swimming hole.

There are also night tours at a frog farm, horseback riding tours, river tubing tours, a hike to Bijagua waterfall and the Heliconias hanging bridges.

For these days, we hiked Rio Celeste one day and then the next day, we spent the morning birdwatching at our hotel, swam in the public section of the river and relaxed at our hotel.

Sample Bijagua Itineries

Day 8: You’ll arrive in Bijagua, check into your hotel and relax.

Day 9, 10 and 11: Check how the weather is to visit Rio Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park, especially if you’re visiting during rainy season. Also include a visit to Heliconias Hanging Bridges to hike their hanging bridges through the rainforest and Finca Verde to see sloths and toucans in the wild.

Day 12 and 13: Rincon de la Vieja

The last two days are i Rincon de la Vieja. This area is by the national park and the best place to explore the dry tropical forest and the Rincon volcano.

Guachipelin tour in Rincon de la Vieja

Bijagua to Rincon is about a 1.5 hour drive via Interamericana highway 1 and Liberia.

  • Hacienda Guachipelin : This hacienda has our favorite adventure combo tour with white water tubing . Rooms are nothing spectacular but the activities and property are really nice. They also have blue pools and waterfalls.
  • Borinquen Mountain Resort & Spa : This hotel is out in the mountains of Rincon de la Vieja in a very peaceful and tranquil area. They have their own hot springs, ziplining and horseback riding trails on the property. Rooms are a lot nicer with a modern rustic touch. Recommended for couples.
  • Buena Vista : Buena Vista has another fun adventure combo tour with a waterslide. Rooms are more like basic cabins, but they also have a coffee farm, cultural activities, hot springs, trails, waterfalls and horseback riding.
  • Adventure combo tour: All the hotels in the Rincon de la Vieja area have their own adventure park with activities like ziplining, waterfalls, horseback riding and hot springs with mud baths.
  • Hike the national park: You can also spend the 1 full day hiking the Rincon de la Vieja national park. There are some charming waterfalls you can hike to or do the short trail around the boiling mud pots in the Las Pailas Sector. Read about the hiking trails in Rincon de la Vieja National Park here.
  • Relax. The hotels mentioned above all have spas, hot springs and mud baths. Spend your day in spa bliss before heading home.

Day 14: Fly out

And on day 14, you fly out of Liberia after a fun 2 weeks! Rincon de la Vieja to Guanacaste Airport is about 30 minutes. Remember to get there 2-3 hours before your flight and with plenty of time to return your rental car.

We hope this itinerary was helpful for your trip planning!

Detailed Itinerary

DAYS 1-3 Cahuita National Park, Toucan Rescue Ranch Highlights: Jungle Beach, Canoeing on Virgin Wetlands, Rainforest Hiking, Sloth Sanctuary, Bird and Wildlife Watching.

Wildlife: sloths, white-faced monkeys, anteaters, otters, caiman, morpho butterflies, poison-arrow frogs, and over 300 species of exotic tropical birds.

Start your adventure   with a visit to Toucan Rescue Ranch wildlife rescue center, a beautiful sanctuary for rescued sloths and other wildlife. On your tour you may have an opportunity to witness the feeding of the baby sloths!  This sloth rescue experience is far superior to the Sloth Sanctuary on the Caribbean coast, which we included in our itinerary for many years but is now servicing a huge cruise ship clientele and no longer offers the opportunity for a more personal and intimate experience with the sloths. We learned about the Toucan Rescue’s sloth program through the sloth veterinarian at the Sloth Sanctuary, who is also the veterinarian for the sloths at Toucan Rescue. We’ve been thrilled to discover that Toucan Rescue offers exactly the same quality of intimate sloth program that the Sloth Sanctuary used to offer in the past. You will love their sloths!

Upon arrival we’ll have some free time to relax from our journey and explore the grounds of our lodge. After dinner, we may embark on a short night hike looking for kinkajou, sleeping monkeys and sloths, caiman and other nocturnal animals such as red-eyed tree frogs or poison-arrow frogs. Then canoe in a private wildlife refuge through virgin wetlands where rainforest canals (similar to Tortuguero, but without the crowds!) are habitat for exotic colorful birds such as the purple gallinule, boat-billed heron and northern jacana.

In the afternoon, we'll hike in Cahuita National Park, a crowd-free rainforest beach teeming with monkeys, sloths, toucans and more. We'll usually see 5-12 troops of monkeys of 2 species (with 3-30 individuals in each troop) as well as 5-20 sloths of 2 species, and a wide variety of other wildlife common to the Caribbean lowlands. This easy-paced hike ends with relaxing on the beach before heading into Cahuita for a fresh-caught seafood dinner at one of the most acclaimed restaurants on the Caribbean coast.

DAYS 3-4 La Selva Biological Reserve, Sarapiqui River Highlights: Whitewater rafting, flat-water wildlife expedition on a rainforest river, hiking in a biological station with biologists studying the rainforest.

Wildlife: Extreme biodiversity including 400 species of birds, rare rainforest frogs, river otter, agouti, coati, monkeys, anteaters, and more.

The Sarapiqui is one of the highlights of every paddler's "dream trip." Passing directly through La Selva Biological Reserve, the river is surrounded by old-growth rainforest and exotic birds. The next day we'll run the Puerto Viejo River, a remote river that rarely sees any humans besides us!

Wild Planet Adventures Exclusive

Choose from rafts or inflatable kayaks for both whitewater and flat-water segments. More boats spread out along a wider stretch the river exposes us to more wildlife habitat, which means we see more wildlife! And in the flat-water sections we can stop, get out of our rafts and observe wildlife for a more intimate experience of the rainforest and wildlife than any other conventional tour.

DAY 5 Arenal Volcano, Hot Springs, Wildlife Interaction In the morning we visit Mirador el Silencio, a Wildlife Reserve located 12 km from the center of La Fortuna and only 5 km from the Arenal Volcano National Park. The Reserve comprises 225 hectares of protected land that cover more than 100 hectares of primary forest. There are some particularly interesting animals that can sometimes be seen here, due to the uniqueness of the eco-system. Sightings have included oncilla, grison, peccary, coati, armadillo, paca, 3 species of monkeys and 2 species of sloth, as well as many birds, amphibians and reptiles.

Later, we'll enjoy soaking in a spectacular hot springs at the base of the Arenal Volcano, with spectacular views of the volcano, right from our lodge!

DAYS 6-8 Monteverde Cloud Forest Highlights: Cloud forest, Canopy Tour, Naturalist-guided Hiking and Birding.

Wildlife: Resplendent quetzals, trogons, rare hummingbirds and hundreds of birds unique to the cloud forest. Howler monkeys and other small mammals.

The bio-diversity and exuberance of life in the cloudforest is a result of clouds drifting in and dripping constant moisture on the dense canopy tops. A naturalist guide points out a stunning array of plant and birdlife, perhaps even the endangered resplendent quetzal. Later, a series of suspended bridges and platforms offers an unforgettable glimpse of life high amongst the canopy and the transcendent sensation of walking amongst the clouds.

EVE 8 Carara National Park Highlights: Evening scarlet macaw migration, rare wildlife, giant exotic hardwoods.

Wildlife: Crocodiles, scarlet macaws, anteater, ocelot, peccaries, white-faced and spider monkeys, poison-arrow frog.

An old growth forest of striking complexity and density, Carara's giant trees include 10 of the rarest hardwoods in Costa Rica. The unique combination of ecosystems is habitat for many rare and endangered animals, including one of the largest populations of scarlet macaws in the country, which migrate twice daily from the inland rainforest to the coastal mangrove swamps.

DAYS 9-10 Manuel Antonio National Park Highlights: Spectacular world-class beaches.

Wildlife: White-faced and squirrel monkeys right on the beach!

The most popular national park in Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio offers dense rainforests spilling down onto brilliant white sand beaches populated with friendly white-faced and squirrel monkeys.

DAYS 11-14 Osa Peninsula / Corcovado National Park Highlights: This is THE place you dream of when you think Costa Rica! The most remote, most bio diverse, most wildlife (including many rare and indigenous species) and NO mosquitoes! Osa also holds the largest remaining stand of virgin rainforest in Central America. One of the last truly unspoiled and wild places in the world.

Wildlife: Osa is the absolute best place to see all 4 types of Costa Rican monkeys, (including rare squirrel monkeys) peccaries and other exotic wildlife, in greater numbers than anywhere else, and your best chance to spot jaguar and other big cats. It is one of the last stands for many extremely rare and endangered species including the Harpy Eagle and King Vulture. Over 400 species of birds including the largest population of scarlet macaws in the country.

Enjoy sunset kayaking with dolphins on the tranquil waters of Golfito Bay. Then, after the sun goes down, we'll snorkel at night to see the water come alive with blue sparkles of bioluminescence. Hike deep into Corcovado National Park with wildlife experts and search for tapir and other rare and endangered wildlife. Enjoy pristine beaches teeming with scarlet macaws. Relax at a world-class rainforest lodge by the beach, which are home to 2,000 nesting pairs of scarlet macaws!

Extensions:

Bocas Del Toro - Snorkeling, Islands & Beaches

Much of Costa Rica's coral reef has been destroyed due to polluted run-off from banana plantations, which means the snorkeling is poor at best. However, the nearby archipelago of Bocas del Toro just across the border in Panama is world renowned for some of the best snorkeling in all of Central America, even better than that of Belize's renowned barrier reef. Bocas has coral of every imaginable color, teeming with marine life, as well as dolphins and turtles. On islands such as Bastimentos you can visit an authentic indigenous village and hike with indigenous guides to see the endemic strawberry poison arrow frog and rare night monkeys, neither of which exist in Costa Rica.

Tortuguero National Park

A natural network of scenic jungle canal navigable only by boat, Tortuguero protects over 350 species of birds and mammals, including endangered great green macaws and jaguars. It is one of the most important nesting sites for green sea turtles. Enjoy boating, canoeing and wildlife watching from your waterfront lodge. Call for different price options.

Explore Osa's wild northern end. Hike Corcovado National Park with local naturalist guides, boat to Cano Island for a day of snorkeling, or just relax at one of Costa Rica's best jungle lodges. Call for different price options.

Luna Lodge (Alternative Lodge / Upgrade)

Travel & Leisure Magazine named Luna Lodge one of the "Top 25 Eco-lodges in the World." We can't say enough about this world-class eco-lodge. But nothing can describe the tangible feeling of peace you will notice immediately upon arrival, and will linger long after you depart.

Exclusive Wildlife Activities

Sarapiqui River Rafting

Snorkeling at night in bioluminescence.

This is one of the most magical experiences on our tour. The water is alive with bright blue sparkles of bioluminescent plankton, and every movement you make leaves a trail of sparkles in the water. We'll snorkel in a shallow, protected area right off the beach. We'll start off wading where we can stand, and then the more adventurous can wander a little farther offshore.

Other Activities

Our hiking philosophy is simple: "The slower you go, the more wildlife you see." Most of our hikes last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours and the pace is a relaxed meander. with frequent stops to observe nature and wildlife. We may even spend intimate time with a troop of wild monkeys, especially if we observe exciting behaviors such as teaching a newborn to walk, a conflict involving an alpha male, or anything else that has what we call a high "wow" factor.

The bio-diversity and exuberance of life in the cloudforest is a result of clouds drifting in and dripping constant moisture on the dense canopy tops. A series of suspended bridges and platforms offers an unforgettable glimpse of life high amongst the canopy and the transcendent sensation of walking amongst the clouds.

Volcano & Hotspring

Enjoy soaking in a spectacular hot springs at the base of the Arenal Volcano, with spectacular views of the volcano, right from our lodge!

Enjoy sunset kayaking with dolphins on the tranquil waters of Golfito Bay.

Rayner Araya Biologist & Naturalist Guide

I grew up in the forest where I spent my time exploring and discovering nature, playing with poison dart frogs, ants, butterflies, beetles and many other jewels, soon I became fascinated about natural history and science. Since very early in life I Knew I wanted to spend my time doing something that involved nature. I think I was very lucky because I happened to be in one of the hotspots for biodiversity and international conservation efforts, this combined with the educated and friendly Costa Rican people make a suitable destination for travelers from all over the world. As a Naturalist Guide I get to share my passion for wildlife and conservation and I get to explore many different ecosystems constantly in my trips. I went to school for Tourism and Biology, I think this makes a great combination to work in the always growing tourism industry. Before working as a Naturalist Guide I worked for OTS, a worldwide known organization dedicated to Tropical Biology Research which is featured in Wild Planet Adventures' Ultimate Wildlife eco-tour. It was here that I met Josh Cohen and began guiding for Wild Planet Adventures.

I love traveling and travelers, I truly believe that by traveling and being exposed to different cultures, languages and life styles we become more tolerant, we learn to accept our differences and that can only make the world a better place!

Koky Porras Legendary Master Naturalist

Koky's amazing ability to accurately call birds to him has made him the "guide of choice" for scientists researching Monteverde's famous quetzals and bellbirds. Koky has also helped to train many of Monteverde's world-class guides. The cloudforest where Koky has lived his whole life is widely known as the hardest place to guide in all of Costa Rica. Here it requires extremely sharp eyes to spot wildlife because the foliage is more dense than anywhere else in the country. In addition, many species have slight differences in their appearance with as little as 150 meters of elevation change, so it requires an enormous amount of experience to identify birds and wildlife instantaneously. Koky's fascination with the symbiotic relationships in nature is as contagious as his love of laughter.

Costa Rica FAQ

Costa rica facts for visitors.

costa rica 14 day tour

Climate/Best Time to Go:

Costa Rica boasts 12 climatic zones, surprising travelers with a wide variety of temperature and rainfall conditions year-round. In general, temperatures in the lowlands range from the low 70's to the high 80's, cooler at elevation. The temperature on top of the continental divide can vary from the mid 50's to low 80's in Monteverde to the 30's on Chirripo, with enveloping clouds drifting over the mountains and bringing mist and occasional rain. December through May is the dry season in most places except the Caribbean coast, which is dryer January through March, but has no real dry season. The "green season" begins very slowly in June and tapers off in July for about 3 weeks which native Costa Ricans call "Little Summer". So don't let rain scare you away from the rainforest! Even in the green season there is plenty of sunshine and great weather for your vacation. Best time to go: late December through early August

Government:

A stable democracy for more than 100 years, Costa Rica is a peaceful nation in the midst of a region that has been troubled by turmoil for centuries. Costa Rica also has the highest standard of living of any Central American country, including literacy rates, medical standards and facilities are all quite high. Costa Ricans are extremely proud that they do not have an army.

Costa Rica lies on the southern part of Central America, bordered on the south by Panama and on the North by Nicaragua. It's land mass is referred to as an isthmus, which is bordered by the sparkling waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and contains the mountains of the continental divide.

Approximately 51,100 square mile--about half the size of the state of Kentucky. Only 120 km wide in some points, Costa Rica would be easy to traverse were it not for the extreme variation in ecosystems and the continental divide. Over 27% of the country's 12 distinct ecological zones are in protected areas.

Population:

The population of Costa Rica is approximately 5 million, mostly of Spanish descent. Costa Rican people call themselves "ticos" (male) or "ticas" (female.) They are extremely friendly, polite, well educated, and enthusiastic about their country. Costa Rica is home to a large international community as well.

Spanish is the official language and is spoken, thankfully, at a speed that is much easier to understand than many other countries. English is widely understood, especially in tourist areas, hotels, lodges and restaurants.

Entry Requirements:

A passport and return ticket is required to enter Costa Rica. No visas are required for citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Japan and many others.

US residents are permitted a $400 per person (or $1,100 per family) duty-free tax exemption upon returning to the US

Departure Tax:

Approximately US $35.00

Local currency is the Colon. One US dollar is worth approximately 375 Colon. US dollars are accepted in many places in Costa Rica. Credit Cards/Travelers Checks: Nearly all hotels, restaurants and shops in the major towns and tourist areas take all major credit cards. Street vendors and smaller establishments in remote areas may accept only cash or travelers checks. Its important to keep travelers checks in a waterproof pouch, as they are considered void if they get wet.

Telecommunications:

All telecommunications services (direct dial phones, fax, telex, cable) are available; but calls from Costa Rica are much higher than an equivalent call to Costa Rica. The country code for Costa Rica is (506) Remote jungle lodges usually have short wave radio communications linked to cellular service.

Costa Rica is in the Central Standard Time zone, and does not utilize daylight saving time. There is very little seasonal variation between dawn and dusk due to the proximity to the equator, dawn is usually 6:00 am and dusk 6:00 pm.

Sales Taxes:

Costa Rica has high taxes, roughly 15% sales tax and there may be 15% service charge in many hotels and restaurants.

Tipping is voluntary; tips of 15% are acceptable; more if the service is exceptionally good. Some hotels and restaurants add a 15 percent service.

While the water is said to be safe in most of Costa Rica, we recommend bottled water in most places. Do not eat fruit you have not pealed yourself, stay away from leafy vegetables like lettuce, and avoid ice cubes. These are common causes of amebic dysentery and giardia, both of which are unpleasant enough to be worth avoiding at all costs.

From spotting dolphins in the Pacific to salsa dancing in San José, here’s our rundown of the best things to do in Costa Rica

Pura vida pursuits: 20 things to do in Costa Rica

From spotting dolphins in the pacific to salsa dancing in san josé, here’s our rundown of the best things to do in costa rica.

Costa Rica is a land of sun-kissed countryside, sparkling coastline, and tropical birds gliding through the sky. Here, in this Central American country known for its pura vida (pure life), you can hike to the tops of mist-covered volcanoes or through lush jungles teeming with animals. On the other hand, you’ve got some of the world’s best beaches for surfing and the cultural hub that is its capital, San José.

Whether your travel style involves dancing bachata until dawn or escaping the crowds to hang with sloths and howler monkeys, there’s something here for you. So, without further ado, it’s time to go wild with 20 of the best things to do in Costa Rica .

Things to do in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

With its tropical climate, great beaches, and sun-kissed coastal views, Guanacaste is one of the most popular places to visit in Costa Rica. This paradise on the country’s northern Pacific coast is where you go to surf by day and party by night. Here, some recommended things to do in Guanacaste:

1. Surf in Tamarindo

Tamarindo draws visitors looking for world-class surfing but also a place to connect with like-minded travellers at lively parties after sunset. This area of Costa Rica used to be a sleepy fishing village, but today it’s a major destination for beach bums and active travellers. Head to Tamarindo to surf and you won’t be let down. Surfers of all abilities can enjoy catching waves at the main beach. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, try Playa Grande nearby. Psst! We’ve got a handy guide to the best Costa Rica surfing spots at the ready too.

2. Catch sunrise at the beach

Guanacaste is home to many of Costa Rica’s best beaches. An early start is worth it to catch pastel pink sunrises at beaches like Playa Conchal, Playa Hermosa, or Playa Nosara. Afterwards, you’ve got all day to sunbathe or spot local wildlife.

An empty beach with a dark sky, before sunrise

3. See Rincón de la Vieja National Park

When you and your travel buds need a beach break, Rincón de la Vieja is the place to hike. This national park is home to nine volcanic craters, hot springs, mud pots, and the La Cangreja waterfall to cool off after all that sweating.

Things to do in Costa Rica’s Northern Highlands

Costa Rica’s north is where you’ll find a few of the county’s most enchanting spots. In mountainous regions here, you can discover the Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, and La Fortuna—a hub for all sorts of adrenaline-pumping activities (think ziplining, hiking, and kayaking). Here’s what to add to the itinerary:

4. Swim in natural hot springs

If you’re an adventurer, one of the best things to do in La Fortuna is take advantage of the natural hot springs—sore muscles will thank you after a day of ziplining or kayaking in the nearby lake. One thing travellers appreciate is that these hot springs are found at various locations near La Fortuna. Whether you’re looking for a high-end spa or natural, rugged baths where local people hang out, you’ll find the full range here.

Travellers enjoying hot springs in La Fortuna

5. Chase waterfalls

If you didn’t chase waterfalls in Costa Rica, did you even go? One of the top things to do in Costa Rica is hiking to its incredible cascading falls and swimming in the pools at their base. La Fortuna waterfall is one of Costa Rica’s most prized cascades. With water tumbling from a height of 70m (229 ft), a day spent in Arenal Volcano National Park might be one of the most mesmerizing experiences of your trip.

6. Go birdwatching

Costa Rica has more than 900 bird species flying through misty cloud forests, jungles, and mountainscapes. One of the best things to do in La Fortuna and Monteverde is birdwatching, given that it won't take much to see flocks of green parrots soaring through the sky, giant hawks, hummingbirds darting between flowers, toucans playing in pairs, or vibrant macaws. Monteverde alone is home to more than 400 species of birds so keep your eyes peeled!

7. Explore Monteverde’s cloud forests

Costa Rica is blessed to have mountains, coastlines, charming countryside, and lush cloud forests. For the traveller seeking to recharge by being in nature, Monteverde’s cloud forests are absolute heaven. Imagine fresh, misty air, vine-covered trees, enchanting tours of the tree canopy, and a soundtrack of the birds, insects and animals who call these jungle spaces home. Monteverde provides the perfect wellness getaway or adventure-packed escape, where hanging bridges, hiking trails through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, sloths, frogs, and monkeys are just part of your days.

Things to do in San José

The capital of Costa Rica, San José, is a cultural hub great for the city slicker traveller looking for the best art, night life, and food. A lot of travellers bookend their trips with shorter stays in the big city. If that’s the case for you, here’s what to get up to:

8. Go on a food crawl

Eating is the thing to do in San José. Plan a food crawl trying the best traditional tico (the nickname for native Costa Rican) foods. One neighbourhood with a great reputation for quality bars and restaurants is Barrio Escalante. Here, you’ll find menus offering classic staples like chifrijo (a pork belly rice bowl), chicharrón (pork belly), sopa negra (black bean soup), or casado (a plate consisting of rice, beans, and meat). When you’re visiting San José, two iconic restaurants for your list are Sikwa, which studies traditional Costa Rican food reviving old, nearly-forgotten recipes, and Apotecario, a cocktail bar with artisanal drinks.

Travellers dining at a restaurant

9. Scope out San José’s arts

The capital city is certainly one of the best places to take in art, museums, music, and theatre. During a stay in San José, you may feel inclined to take in a show or tour at the iconic Teatro Nacional (national theatre). Or, simply venture around downtown at a leisurely pace spotting murals painted by local artists.

10. Hang out in Escazú

Got some spare time in the big city? Check out the upscale neighbourhood of Escazú. You can escape the hustle and bustle but indulge in city comforts like ritzy cafes or hot restaurants with a view.

11. See Poás Volcano

Just a day trip from San José, Poás Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s geological gems. It’s one of Costa Rica’s many mesmerizing volcanoes and a sight for sore eyes with its craggy red rocks, teal-blue crater lake, and rising steam. Poás is an active volcano with gas and steam emissions along with the occasional eruption.

Things to do in Costa Rica’s countryside

For a slower pace, time to unwind, and chance to engage with local communities, head to countryside areas like Atenas, Puriscal, Ciudad Colon, or San Ramon. Don’t bother with a packed schedule here, just make sure to take in these things:

12. Drink sugar cane juice under the sun

The pura vida is all about indulging in life’s small joys. A visit to Costa Rica isn’t just about the hotspots, bucket list activities, and famous sites, it’s about slowing down and appreciating small, everyday pleasures. Like drinking a cold sugar cane juice under the blazing-hot sun. Things like sugar cane juice (not to mention the vast array of fruit juices Costa Rica offers) are cheap and frequently sold by roadside vendors in the country.

13. Visit a ranch

If you can get to a ranch or do a little horseback riding in the countryside of Costa Rica, you’ve experienced the true tico way of life. Bonus points if a real cowboy shows you the art of tossing a lasso!

14. Learn the coffee making process

Thanks to its microclimates, elevation, and other geographic features, Costa Rica grows some of the best coffee in the world. For coffee lovers spending time in the country, a tour of a coffee farm has to be on the itinerary. Some of the main coffee growing regions are located in the central valley near San José, Cartago, Tarrazú, and Alajuela—to name a few. A good coffee tour involves meeting the local farmers and community, getting an up close look at how the beans are dried, ground and roasted, and, of course, a taste of the finished product.

Travellers holding a basket of coffee beans

Things to do along Costa Rica’s Central Pacific Coast

This stretch of the Pacific is home to sloths, sparkling beaches, crocodiles, and palm tree paradises. If you’re visiting this region of Costa Rica, Jaco and Manuel Antonio deserve at least a day or two. Here’s what to do in Costa Rica’s Pacific towns and beaches:

15. Spot crocodiles In Jaco

Jaco is a little beach town and one of the closest beachy hubs to San José. It’s known for surfing and nightlife and one other major thing: crocodiles! If enormous crocs don't make you queasy, then you’ll love looking down from a bridge crossing the Tarcoles River. Below you’re likely to spot large and toothy crocodiles bathing in the sun. It’s one of the top things to do in Jaco, Costa Rica but it may not be for the faint of heart.

16. Hike to Nauyaca Falls

Chasing waterfalls really is one of the top things to do in Costa Rica and one of the best activities along the Pacific coast is the hike to Nauyaca Falls, located 20 minutes or so outside of the beach town of Dominical. These falls are jaw-droppingly beautiful with two tiers of billowing water pooling at a turquoise pool below. The hike takes under an hour and isn’t challenging, just bring a hat and water for the sun.

17. Meet sloths in Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the top places in Costa Rica to see sloths. These small sleepy creatures are as adorable as they are lazy. As for the park itself, it's a tropical paradise exploding with palm trees where monkeys also swing from the branches.

Things to do in Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast

Few places beat Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Known for its sugary beaches, surfing, wildlife, and vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, Puerto Viejo in particular is a magnet for travellers from all over the world. Here are our recommended activities:

18. Visit Tortuguero National Park

Along Costa Rica’s Caribbean coastline is the much-adored Tortuguero National Park. As you may deduce from its name, this national park is home to many sea turtles and is a protected zone which happens to be one of their most important nesting sites. Nesting season is from July to October so if you’re in the country during that time, don’t miss out. These grounds are also home to other wildlife including many species of monkeys, pumas, birds, and iguanas.

19. Spot howler monkeys in Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo is a blissful slice of Costa Rica with Caribbean beaches, cotton candy sunsets, and palm tree-lined shores. Before your trip, don’t forget to pack a set of binoculars. One underrated (but essential!) thing to do in Costa Rica is spot howler monkeys swinging from the treetops in Puerto Viejo. They make their presence known so there’s no doubt you’ll hear them bellowing from the jungle shortly after your arrival.

20. Raft in the Pacuare River

One of Costa Rica’s most beautiful waterways, Pacuare River is surrounded by lush rainforest. The river runs into the Caribbean with rapids that can range from gentle to turbulent. A day of river rafting brings views of beautiful birds flying overhead and waterfalls. For the outdoorsy traveller, this is easily one of the best things to do in Costa Rica.

  • Spend two days at Monteverde’s complex ecosystem, perched atop the continental divide and sustained by moist clouds and fog. Monteverde supports more than 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands of insect species, and at least 2,500 varieties of plants, 420 of which are orchids.
  • Experience the Bat Jungle, promoting public awareness of the ecological importance of bats, thereby helping to conserve bat populations throughout the world.

Schedule by Day

Depart U.S. and fly to San Jose, Costa Rica. Transfer to the Bougainvillea Hotel, located in the hills of historic Heredia, a small town in the Central Valley just 15 minutes north of San José. Gather for a welcome reception and dinner.

Overnight: Bougainvillea Hotel

Meals: R, D

Travel by coach and boat to Tortuguero, along Costa Rica’s northeast coast. Tortuguero´s beaches are the most important nesting site for Green Sea Turtles in the western Caribbean. Visit the Sea Turtle Conservation Museum, then check into the Aninga Lodge.

Most of the hotel is constructed five feet above the ground with buildings on stilts and raised walkways to protect the natural habitat for animals and give guests panoramic views of the tropical rainforest. The lodge also built its own water treatment plant to prevent contamination of the fragile ecosystem. After dinner, take a special nighttime sea turtle nesting walk.

Overnight: Aninga Lodge

Meals: B, L, D

Spend the day exploring Tortuguero’s calm, forest-lined rivers and man-made channels by small boat. Look for monkeys, sloths, iguanas, caiman, turtles, and an abundance of colorful tropical birds.

This afternoon, learn about sea turtle nesting with a local biologist.

Transfer to the Sarapiquí River for a fun-filled rafting experience through the lowland rainforest of Costa Rica’s northern zone, where exotic birds, such as the sun bittern, keel billed toucan and the endangered great green macaw are still spotted.

The Sarapiquí is a class II river (appropriate for kids 6 and older), with calm pools following each of its rapids. On the river’s edge is a private farm producing ornamental plants, and a delicious lunch with plenty of fresh fruit.

Continue to the Tilajari Hotel by Arenal National Park, featuring thermal springs, lush gardens, nature paths, and panoramic volcano and mountain views.

Overnight: Tilajari Hotel

Explore the canopies of the rainforest on interpretive trails and 15 hanging bridges near Arenal Volcano. Continue to a cooking class with lunch and an appreciation of organic farming and the traditional country life of this rural area.

In the evening, take a night walk revealing the wonders of the region’s nocturnal animals.

Take a boat ride across Lake Arenal, which attracts many species of resident and migratory birds to the verdant hills along its banks. Mammals such as the playful coatimundi can occasionally be seen along with views of the Arenal Volcano.

Continue to the Monteverde Cloud Forest and the El Establo Hotel, featuring spectacular views of the Monteverde mountains, the coastal plains, and Nicoya Gulf.

Overnight: To be announced

Start the new year choosing between two options: a scenic Sky Tram & ziplining or a visit to the Bat Jungle. The Sky Tram will lead you up to the Continental Divide, with short stops to observe the cloud forest biodiversity and panoramic views. Optional ziplining between five observation towers is also included.

Or, visit the Bat Jungle for a guided walk into the world of bats. Watch the bats and bat feeders from a "Bat Habitat", which is a separate glass enclosed viewing area. The Bat Jungle’s mission is to promote public awareness of the ecological importance of bats, thereby helping to conserve bat populations throughout the world.

Spend the afternoon at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and its easy trails through some of the most beautiful primary cloud forests in the world. Often shrouded in cloud blown in from the Atlantic Ocean, the forests of Monteverde are laden with epiphytic growth such as mosses, lichens, ferns, bromeliads, orchids-even small trees! Famous for its populations of Resplendent Quetzal, Monteverde has almost become synonymous with this legendary bird. Other cloud forest denizens include the Black-faced Solitaire, Golden-browed Chlorophonia and Black Guan.

This evening, celebrate your journey with a special farewell dinner.

What to Expect

In order to make the most of what this expedition has to offer, the trip will be active, requiring you to be in good health and physical condition. The schedule will include long days, with some early departures, and activities scheduled throughout the day and into the evening.

Daily excursions can require up to three hours of walking, often over loose rocks and uneven terrain where stairs are unavailable or do not have handrails, and standing, often in the warm sun. Rafting down class II/III rapids on the Sarapiqui River is appropriate for kids 6 and older. The degree of difficulty for each day’s activity will be described in daily briefings.

This promises to be a memorable journey, but as with all travel, a flexible attitude, a spirit of adventure and a willingness to explore new areas will enhance your enjoyment of this program. You do not have to participate in all the scheduled activities, except when traveling to the next destination. We are sure you will be pleased with the exciting educational program provided, but we want you to be aware of the pace and activity level.
