Concert Review: Tears For Fears & Garbage – West Palm Beach, FL – June 9th, 2022

tears for fears tipping point tour setlist

Review of the Tears For Fears concert with Garbage in West Palm Beach for The Tipping Point tour on June 9th, 2022.

Photos by Larry Marano Photography

Everything was set for brilliant night in West Palm Beach, FL. The clouds had lifted after the day’s deluge, and the audience filled out the seats and back lawn as far as the eye could see. With shows finally starting to return, it’s no wonder anticipation was in the air for a great show from 80s pop icons Tears For Fears and 90s alternative rockers Garbage. And what an amazing night it was.

tears for fears tipping point tour setlist

Garbage took the stage first and delivered a powerful 60 minute set full of the songs that made them 90s MTV and alt-radio darlings including “Stupid Girl”, “I’m Only Happy When It Rains”, and “Push It”. Shirley Manson commanded the crowd with her dynamic vocals and stage presence as she always has. They closed with the haunting “You Look So Fine”, which included Manson singing the Fleetwood Mac classic “Dreams” over the music as the song concluded. It was as good an opening set as you can hope for and seemed to hit with the crowd.

Tears For Fears took the stage promptly at 9pm. The lights faded as the sounds of the closing track “Stay” from their latest album ‘The Tipping Point’ played over the speakers. As that song ended, Roland Orzabal, Curt Smith and the band took to the stage and delivered the first two songs from The Tipping Point, “No Small Thing” and the title track. Both were powerful and emphatically made the declaration that they are not just a nostalgia act. However, with the opening notes of the 3rd song, the band’s classic smash hit “Everybody Wants to Rule The World”, the audience jumped to their feet and things seemed to really kick into gear. They followed with the track “Secret World” and the epic “Sowing the Seeds of Love” next before jumping into 4 songs in a row from their critically-acclaimed new album. The standout of those tracks was the poignant “Rivers of Mercy” which sounded glorious.

From there the duo took the audience back to where it all started with a couple of tracks from The Hurting, “Mad World” and re-arranged softer version of “Suffer the Children”, sung brilliantly by new backup singer Lauren Evans, making her debut with the band that night. The singer seemed to lift the show to another level as she sang Oleta Adams’ parts on “Woman In Chains” and “Badman’s Song”. Evans is an other-worldly talent who no doubt we should be hearing about again. The hits kept coming with “Pale Shelter”, “Break it Down Again” and the mega-hit “Head Over Heels” closing out the main set. The “na-na-na’s” from the crowd were louder than even the band.

For the encore, the band played one more new track “End of Night” before actually ending the night with the one-two punch of “Change” and “Shout”.  Both sounded brilliant, as did the exceptional band. The stage set and lighting was another element that made the night special with the Pink Floyd-esque screen display fitting perfectly and elevating the delivery of each song.

The vibe at the iThink Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach was one of mutual appreciation. After this extended period  we’ve all gone through without shows, the massive audience in attendance was even more engaged and attentive, appreciative of what they were experiencing. Equally, Roland and Curt seemed to take pause between tracks as if in awe of what the adulation they were receiving, truly soaking it all in. It is great to have these guys back where they belong, releasing amazing new music, and filling big venues. Hopefully, this is just the start of a new beginning.

Tears for Fears Announce 2023 North American Tour

By Jazz Monroe

Tears for Fears Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith

Tears for Fears are heading out on a summer tour of North America. The Tipping Point Tour Part II kicks off in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on June 23, and wraps up six weeks later in Los Angeles. Cold War Kids will support on all dates.

Tears for Fears returned in 2021, announcing The Tipping Point —their first album in 17 years—and explaining that “before everything went so right with this album, everything first had to go wrong. It took years, but something happens when we put our heads together.” They began touring the record last year, playing shows with Alison Moyet and Garbage.

Tears for Fears, ‘The Tipping Point': Album Review

Nobody would expect a band that brought dissociative identity disorder and Janovian theory to the top of the charts to rest easy during a recording hiatus that lasted for almost two decades. But the 18 years since  Tears for Fears '  Everybody Loves a Happy Ending  have been especially rough on Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith at times. Orzabal's wife died in 2017, forcing the duo to pull out of some live dates, and work on their seventh album, The Tipping Point , began nearly 10 years ago before a frustrated Smith temporarily left the group.

With fences mended and recording finally completed, Orzabal and Smith generally pick up where they left off in 2004 – which was the first time the pair had worked together since 1989's The Seeds of Love . And like their previous reunions,  The Tipping Point finds them happy to cover territory that's been part of their DNA since Tears for Fears' 1983 debut The Hurting and the worldwide breakout LP  Songs From the Big Chair  two years later.

There's even an eagerness in these 10 songs, starting with the stripped-down and slow-building "No Small Thing," to reboot and reshape Tears for Fears as something both familiar and evolving. " Just be good to yourself ," they sing, setting up a theme for an album that explores mental illness, moving on and mortality. The death of Orzabal's wife of 35 years certainly has a part here, but just as often Orzabal and Smith take stock of their often fractious relationship.

The music is often reflective of these subjects – knotty and dark as it goes from folk-rock to art-rock to synth-pop. It's not exactly what you'd expect from Tears for Fears at times, though the title track and "End of Night," as well as a handful of other songs, dive head-first into the  Big Chair era's new wave grandeur.

But even these moments offer small reminders that The Tipping Point has larger aspirations in mind. Acoustic guitars and accordions blend into the synths and programmed percussion in this landscape, never making the easiest connection to the past. Which is the point. Highlight "Break the Man" isn't too far removed from "Woman in Chains" – 30 years on, we still have a long way to go – but the path isn't exactly straightforward either. As with the band, there are some tricky turns to navigate before there's a comfortable resting point on The Tipping Point . Relatively speaking, of course.

Tears for Fears Debut Four New Songs Live at 2022 Tour Kickoff: Review, Photos and Setlist

"The Tipping Point World Tour" is plenty satisfying in its familiarity, but full of welcome surprises as well

Tears for Fears Debut Four New Songs Live at 2022 Tour Kickoff: Review, Photos and Setlist

Addressing the crowd on Friday (May 20th), the first night of their amphitheater tour with Garbage at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center, Tears for Fears founding member Roland Orzabal pinpointed the band’s mood as “chuffed,” as in “deeply satisfied in a particularly British manner.” The band had brought out “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” three songs into their set, sounding just as pristine and cathartic now as it did when first recorded nearly 40 years ago.

Conventional wisdom might be to save such an iconic hit for the latter half of the set or the encore. But Tears for Fears are not a mere legacy act capitalizing on Gen X-er nostalgia. You can identify the most popular songs by how many people start recording on their phones. But deeper cuts, like epic multi-parter “Bad Man’s Song,” were equally impactful. And the transitions from one song to another were so smooth that the audience had barely enough time to applaud for one before another was underway.

The sense of excitement emanating from Orzabal, co-founder Curt Smith, and the rest of the band was understandable on multiple levels. It was the first night of their first tour since 2019, and their first American tour since 2017 (get tickets here ). Then there was the fact that they released their first album of new material in almost two decades earlier this year, the excellent The Tipping Point . And finally, if there was ever a time to “shout” and “let it all out,” it’s now, for better or worse.

At-home listenings of Tears for Fears are rewarding enough. Experienced live, these songs become all the richer, enhanced by moments human (Orzabal’s ad-libs during “Sowing the Seeds of Love”) and more serendipitous (a delicate wind as he sings of how “the breeze blows gently” on “Bad Man’s Song”).

Speaking with Consequence recently, the duo said this set would be their “best one yet.” Maybe someone who saw them tour Songs from the Big Chair in 1985 would disagree. But this wasn’t a “well, at least you got to see them live’” performance; it was impressive without grading on any kind of curve.

While many concertgoers likely arrived with at least one definite favorite track dating back decades (This writer’s being “spare the rod, spoil the child” anthem “Suffer the Children” — rendered here as a gorgeous ballad sung by backing vocalist Carina Round), the band made a strong case for The Tipping Point as, if not quite as great as their first two albums, no less inspired.

And there was no better example of Tears for Fears still being able to move their audience with the most unguarded of sincerity than during their debut performance of Tipping standout “Rivers of Mercy.” (“Long, Long, Long Time,” “My Demons” and “End of Night” also saw live debuts.) Seemingly everyone in attendance was seated as Orzabal — bathed in blue light — sang of metaphorical cleansing waters in a voice sounding like the missing link between Peter Gabriel and Sufjan Stevens. It’s not the go-to karaoke option, but Tears for Fears are as adept with restraint as they are with the bombastic.

On record, Orzabal and Smith have long felt wise beyond their years, able to sneak astute psychoanalysis into the catchiest synth-pop faster than you can spell “id.” But while it’s one thing to hear twenty-somethings sing of ennui and strained parent-child relationships, there’s something especially sobering about hearing these lyrics when the writers are older and their hair far less pigmented. They’ve been through some shit, including with each other.

But the striving toward self-actualization persists, even if it’s understood that the journey, not the destination, is what matters. And the harmonies hit as hard as ever, if not more so. It also doesn’t hurt that, with his long white hair and beard, Orzabal recalls that of a wizard.

If the video display during opener “No Small Thing” was any indicator, the theme of this set and perhaps of Tears for Fears entire oeuvre, was everything, uh, now. And if black-and-white images of newborn children, space travel, political protests, and crashing waves seems like a heavy-handed way to kick off a night of earworms, you’re probably right. But Orzabal and Smith never seek to proselytize or weaponize their legend status to claim intellectual superiority. One senses they show interest in so much because there’s so much to be learned, shared, and so on.

Even if Tears for Fears weren’t still performing and making great music, they would stay in our collective consciousness through their enduring influence on so many modern synth-pop acts or any artist who finds poetry in stating things as bluntly as possible. That they are able to make songs new and old alike feel so special both on record and live is truly remarkable.

Familiar? Yes, but still plenty satisfying and full of welcome surprises. Worn out? Never.

Tears for Fears next play Cleveland, OH at the Blossom Music Center tonight (May 21st). Tickets for that show, and for the rest of tour, are available via Ticketmaster .
