Next Step: Tell us who is travelling so we can give you an accurate quote.

Who do you want to get a quote for?

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance covers you, your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote will calculate the coverage you already have on your card—saving you money!

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance does not cover travellers other than you (the cardholder), your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote for these travellers will not factor in your credit card coverage.

Tip: You will need to get a quote and buy travel insurance for other eligible travellers separately so that we can give you an accurate quote for everyone.

Traveling beyond your province or territory protect yourself with travel insurance 9 ..

When your travels take you far from home in Canada, even a minor accident or sickness can become a major expense and a costly inconvenience—especially since the coverage you have may not fully protect you, whether that’s your provincial health plan, protection offered through your credit card or coverage through your employer.

Your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) typically covers only a limited portion of your medical expenses once you leave the country and your province. For example, a four-day stay in a U.S. hospital for an appendectomy could cost $39,400 (USD), with only $1,600 (CAD) covered by your GHIP. And a one-day stay in a U.S. hospital for a broken arm could cost $32,600 (USD), with only $400 (CAD) covered by your GHIP.

Coverage offered through your credit card 9 and employer, while valuable, may only cover specific scenarios and not offer the comprehensive protection you will want while you’re away from home.

Travel insurance can cover your entire family for the duration of your trip, and family pricing is generally available to help you save on the coverage you need. If you travel regularly, a multi-trip annual travel insurance plan that can offer protection for a full year, regardless of the number of times you travel, is a smart option to consider.

Travel Insurance FAQs

Have questions about travel insurance for seniors? Get the answers you need here.

Generally speaking, no. While your age can affect your eligibility for certain coverages, we have packages and plans that cover all age groups. If you are age 65 or older, we may ask you to answer a few questions about your health to make sure you have the most appropriate coverage.

Possibly. Depending on your age, medical condition and, if applicable, your answers to our health questions, pre-existing medical conditions are covered if they are stable for a certain time period (as specified in your policy) before your policy's effective date.

Note: Please refer to the policy document for complete coverage details regarding pre-existing conditions.

Your answers to the health questions (if applicable) will be used to help determine the benefits you are eligible to receive under your insurance policy.

When answering the health questions:

  • Take your time. The questions may take up to 10 minutes to complete.
  • You (the applicant) should complete and sign the Medical Questionnaire. (If you have someone else complete the Medical Questionnaire on your behalf, it is still your responsibility to make sure the answers to the questions are correct.)
  • Read and answer each question carefully and accurately. Review your answers to confirm they are correct. Incorrect answers may lead to your coverage being voided or your claim denied.
  • Have your prescriptions or a description of your medications nearby for reference.
  • If you are unsure about any questions regarding your medical condition or medications, please speak to your physician.

The right coverage for your trip depends on several factors, including (but not limited to) where you're travelling to, how long you’ll be gone, the kind of transportation you'll be using and, in some instances, your overall health. View all of our travel insurance products now.

Yes, if you are travelling outside your home province or territory. There are several reasons why it's important to get travel medical insurance when you're travelling within Canada. One reason is that accidents can happen anywhere. Another is that government health insurance plans do have limits on reimbursement of emergency medical expenses incurred while you are in another province. For example, the ambulance, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs might not be covered by some government health insurance plans.

The cost of a trip can be a significant financial investment. A lot can also happen in the time between booking your trip and departing—if a medical emergency or other unexpected event prevents you from going on your trip, you could potentially lose some (or possibly all) of the money you paid.

With trip cancellation and interruption insurance, you're protected when certain situations prevent you from travelling as planned. Examples include:

  • You can't travel due to an illness, job loss or immediate family member's medical emergency
  • You need to return home earlier than scheduled because of a family emergency or medical condition

Note : We strongly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance at the time you pay your initial travel deposit. Please see the policy document for complete coverage details, including terms and conditions.

Apply for the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card — A flexible travel card with no blackout dates

On RBC’s Website

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite card is pretty basic in the grand scope of the Canadian travel credit card landscape. The regular earn rate is low (at 1 point for every dollar spent), and the only accelerated category is eligible travel, which earns you 25% more. Perks and benefits are also limited to a few types of travel insurance. Considering the annual fee is $120 and you need a minimum personal income of $60,000 to qualify, the RBC Avion Visa Infinite is lacking compared to other travel credit cards at this price point.

That being said, it’s not a bad card. The flight redemption schedule offers some pretty decent deals. Plus, you can use Avion points for any airline worldwide without blackouts or seat restrictions.

  • Earn Avion points on every purchase at a rate of 1 point per dollar spent and 1.25 points per dollar spent on eligible travel.
  • Points do not expire and can be redeemed towards travel with any airline with no blackout periods or seat restrictions.
  • Cardholders can benefit from increased rewards when they link their card to participating programs at Petro-Canada and Rexall.

Earning rewards

Cardholders will earn Avion points when they spend with this card. Here’s how:

  • Welcome bonus of 35,000 welcome Avion points on approval
  • Earn 1 Avion point per dollar on all eligible purchases, plus an extra 25% on eligible travel-related purchases

There are no accelerated categories aside from travel. However, there are no earning caps or limits on how many points you can earn with this credit card.

Redeeming Rewards

Avion points can be redeemed online at avionrewards.com or via the RBC Avion app. You can redeem your Avion points toward:

  • Travel: Avion points will have the best value when redeemed towards flights with the RBC Avion redemption schedule (a rate of $0.02-$0.0233). You can also redeem them through the RBC travel portal at a rate of $0.01 per point.
  • Point Transfers: You can transfer Avion points to Westjet, British Airways and American Airlines.
  • Gift Cards: You can redeem your Avion points for gift cards.
  • Merchandise: You can redeem your Avion points for merchandise.
  • Statements Credits: You can use your points toward your credit card statement.
  • Charity Donations: You can use your points to donate to charity.

Rewards Potential

While the flexible redemption schedule for RBC Avion points is great, the earn rates and rewards potential are lacking compared to similar credit cards with high accelerated rates and a strong earning schedule. This means earning points with the RBC Avion Visa Infinite will be slower. That being said, cardholders can still come out ahead. Based on average Canadian spending, Forbes Advisor estimates this card could earn $178.72 in rewards value per year after the annual fee.

RBC Avion Visa Infinite vs. TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card has an $89 annual fee and earns rewards at a rate of 1 point per dollar spent. While there are no accelerated categories, Aeroplan members can double dip and earn double the points at participating retailers. This card also comes with comprehensive insurance plus the Aeroplan program, one of the top rewards programs in Canada. With similar structures, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Card is likely a better pick since it does have a lower annual rate.

RBC Avion Visa Infinite vs. PC World Elite Mastercard

The PC World Elite Mastercard is a no-annual-fee credit card aimed at individuals who are more interested in earning free  groceries than redeeming points for travel or shopping rewards. Cardholders earn 30 to 45 points per dollar spent at participating PC Optimum rewards brands and 10 points per dollar spent elsewhere. While the PC World Elite Mastercard does come with travel insurance, it’s not a travel card. If you are in the market for a card where the rewards are best for travel, then the RBC Avion Visa Infinite is the better pick.

RBC Avion Visa Infinite vs. CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

Another Aeroplan card to compare is the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card. At $139 per year, it’s a little pricier than the RBC Avion Visa Infinite card, however, it also has higher earn rates of 1.5 points per dollar spent on gas, groceries, Air Canada travel and electric vehicle charging. All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar spent. Since it is an Aeroplan card, you can double dip with Aeroplan partners, earning points even faster. It is a bit more expensive, but the earning and rewards potential is much higher, meaning it is more lucrative as a travel credit card.

When determining a rating for individual credit cards, the Forbes Advisor Canada editorial team factors in an exhaustive list of data points. With rewards, the scoring model used considers factors such as, but not limited to, reward rates and categories, fees, welcome bonuses, and other benefits and features. Keep in mind that what may be best for some people might not be right for you. Conduct informed research before deciding which cards will best help you achieve your financial goals.

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite card is attractive because you can earn points across all purchases and the redemption schedule for flights is incredibly flexible. That said, it will be slow to earn points with the majority of purchases at the lower earning rates for this credit card. Plus, perks and benefits outside of travel insurance are lacking. If you are a frequent traveller and are really looking to get into maximizing points and rewards, it may not be the best option for you.

Visiting another country or province without travel insurance can be a costly mistake. Indeed, did you know that an overnight stay in a hospital in the United States can exceed $14,000 CAD? Some countries might even refuse to help you if you are unable to prepay for treatment.

Travel insurance is a necessity when you are away from home . It guarantees your ability to access and pay for health care, if and when you need it. Beyond medical emergencies, travel insurance can also help with flight issues, lost luggage, and more.

The Best Credit Cards for Travel Insurance

Opinions, reviews, analyses & recommendations are the author’s alone, and have not been reviewed, endorsed, or approved by any of these entities. This page does not include all card companies or all available card offers.

I talk a lot about travel insurance on this website . I know it’s not an exciting topic, but it’s the one thing I won’t leave home without.

Travel insurance has saved me — and my readers — time and time again. I’ve had my gear broken and stolen, missed flights, needed doctor’s appointments, and even needed urgent medical care abroad.

I’ve learned the hard way how vital it is — especially as a budget traveler.

Fortunately, these days, many credit cards come with travel insurance. And while I always recommend that you get comprehensive travel insurance in addition, there are a number of cards out that offer pretty robust protection at no additional cost.

If you’re thinking about getting a new credit card, or if you want to know which of your current ones you can rely on for decent insurance, here’s a list of the best credit cards with travel insurance:

Table of Contents

How Credit Card Travel Insurance Works

My top pick: chase sapphire reserve®, capital one venture x, bilt rewards mastercard, the platinum card from american express, how to use your credit card’s travel insurance, frequently asked questions about credit card travel insurance.

Travel protection offered by credit cards does not cost anything extra, although nearly all of the cards that offer such insurance — with one notable exception (see below) — come with an annual fee.

It’s one of the many reasons that getting a card with an annual fee is worth it (and why I think that avoiding cards with annual fees is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when using credit cards for travel ). If something goes wrong while you’re on the road and your card’s insurance pays for it, you’ll more than recoup the annual fee right there.

The most important thing to know is that for the insurance to kick in, you must have paid for your trip using that card. However, once you do that, you’ll be covered.

While the payout limits vary greatly, as do the conditions that need to be met before coverage kicks in, these are general categories that credit card travel insurance usually covers:

  • Trip delay: covers meals, lodging, and other expenses if your trip is delayed at least six hours (for some cards, it must be at least 12)
  • Trip cancelation and interruption: reimburses trip costs if a covered reason (such as death in the family) causes you to cancel your trip or go home early
  • Rental car insurance: in the event of an accident, covers damage to the car; injuries are not covered (primary insurance kicks in before any other insurance, while if the card offers secondary insurance, you’ll have to file with your own car insurance first)
  • Baggage: covers delay of, loss of, or damage to your baggage
  • Accident insurance: in the case of death or dismemberment, you or your beneficiaries will receive a payout

While these are categories that credit cards with the best travel insurance generally include, always read the fine print of your coverage no matter what. There’s a lot in there that can change what you’re eligible for, such as what state you live in, the length of your trip, and more.

With that in mind, here are the best credit cards for travel insurance and what they cover:

This is my favorite premium rewards card . It offers the most comprehensive travel insurance out of any credit card and is one of the only ones to include any kind of medical insurance. The Reserve also offers airport lounge access, a fantastic roster of transfer partners, and an array of statement credits.

As a Visa Infinite® card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s travel insurance includes the following:

  • Primary car rental insurance up to $75,000 USD
  • Travel accident insurance up to $1,000,000 USD
  • Trip cancelation/interruption coverage up to $10,000 USD per person and $20,000 USD per trip
  • Trip delay coverage of $500 USD after delays of six hours or more
  • Lost luggage coverage up to $3,000 USD
  • $100 per day for up to five days if your baggage is delayed
  • Emergency medical and dental coverage up to $2,500 USD for treatment (minus a $50 USD deductible)
  • Emergency evacuation insurance up to $100,000 USD

LEARN MORE —> LEARN MORE

If you don’t want to pay the high annual fee for the Reserve, the card_name offers most of the same benefits for a much lower one ($95 USD). Just note that the Preferred comes with lower payouts and more restrictions (for example, trip delay coverage doesn’t kick in until a delay of at least 12 hours). Emergency medical and evacuation insurance also isn’t covered on the Preferred. You can read my review of it here .

Additionally, if you’re eligible for a business card, the card_name has the almost the same coverage as the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

A few years ago, Capital One overhauled its cards, and the Capital One Venture X now competes with the top brands, including some of the best travel protection around. You’ll also get a generous welcome offer, lounge access, travel credits, and a solid points-earning structure. It also offers particularly unique features: you’ll earn 2x points on every purchase, and there’s no fee for up to four authorized users.

As a Visa Infinite® card, coverage is similar to that offered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve (though it doesn’t offer baggage delay, medical, or evacuation coverage, all of which the Reserve does).

The Venture X offers these protections:

  • Trip cancelation and interruption coverage up to $2,000 USD per person, per trip
  • Up to $500 USD when travel is delayed by six hours or more
  • Lost luggage up to $3,000 USD
  • Cell phone protection up to $800 USD for repair or replacement (minus a $50 USD deductible)

If you don’t want to pay the $395 USD annual fee for the Venture X, the card_name offers solid travel protection at a lower annual fee ($95 USD), though without some significant benefits, like trip interruption, cancelation, or delay insurance.

Bilt credit card

The Bilt Mastercard is the only credit card that allows you to earn points by paying your rent (they offer bonus points and perks every Rent Day as well). It also offers the best travel insurance you can get on a card with no annual fee.

Since Bilt is a World Elite Mastercard, you’ll get access to that suite of travel insurance benefits. Notably, it doesn’t have accident insurance or medical coverage, so you’ll want to purchase additional travel insurance that does.

Bilt’s travel insurance includes the following:

  • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver that allows you to get reimbursed for covered damage to or theft of your rental car
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption Protection that allows you to get reimbursement for nonrefundable common carrier tickets in the case of trip cancellation
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement that allows you to get reimbursed for eligible expenses incurred if your trip is delayed over six hours
  • Cellular Telephone Protection up to $800 USD against damage or theft (subject to a $25 USD deductible)

—> LEARN MORE

At $695 USD per year, the Platinum Card from American Express has the highest annual fee of any consumer travel card out there, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to better benefits across the board. While the Platinum does offer great travel insurance, the Chase Sapphire Reserve handily beats it in all categories.

However, the Platinum offers emergency evacuation and medical transport coverage (with no limit on cost), which can be huge if you end up needing to take advantage of it. Evacuation and transport costs can be incredibly expensive, costing upwards of $250,000 USD!

It also offers the best lounge access of any travel card, elite status benefits, travel perks, special hotel discounts, and luxury goods and service credits.

The Platinum Card’s protections include the following:

  • Trip cancelation and interruption coverage of $10,000 USD per person, per trip (on round-trip tickets only, $20,000 per 12 consecutive month period)*
  • Trip delay coverage up to $500 USD if six hours or more (on round-trip tickets only, 2 claims per card per 12 consecutive month period)*
  • Emergency evacuation and medical transport coverage: no limit; must be coordinated via the Premium Global Assist Hotline**
  • Cell phone protection up to $800 USD minus a $50 USD deductible^
  • Lost luggage coverage up to $3,000 USD per person^^
  • Secondary car rental coverage

Ensuring that you’re covered for your trip is pretty easy. Just follow these steps:

  • Use your card (or points associated with that card) to pay for your trip (flights, rental cars, hotels, etc.).
  • Keep all receipts, and take photos of everything if you need to file a claim (just in case).
  • Submit your claim ASAP if you need to file one.
  • Always read the fine print!

Do Visa credit cards come with travel insurance? Premium Visa cards come with travel insurance, and several on this list are Visa cards. Visa Platinum, Visa Signature, Visa Infinite, Visa Platinum Business, and Visa Signature Business Premium all offer some form of travel insurance. Coverage varies based on the type of card you choose.

Do credit cards automatically have travel insurance? No, which is why it’s important to know which ones do so that you can use the right card when paying for your trip. Most premium travel credit cards come with some form of insurance, but coverage does vary. Always read the fine print!

What’s the difference between credit card insurance and travel insurance? There is a lot of overlap between the two, such as trip and baggage delay coverage, trip cancelation/interruption coverage, and car rental insurance. The main difference is that standard travel insurance policies offer more comprehensive medical coverage. That’s why I always buy travel insurance before I go abroad.

How do you submit a claim for credit card insurance? Every card’s process is a bit different, but generally, you’ll need to file your claim online, including all supporting documentation. You can call the hotline on your card to get more information and to open a claim as well.

Does credit card insurance cover missed flights? It depends on the reason. Covered reasons (which depend on the card) often include a delayed flight that makes you miss your connection or an issue with your airplane or airline. But if you missed your 6am flight because you overslept, you’re out of luck.

If you’re deciding on which credit card is best for travel insurance, take a hard look at your needs so that you get the one that suits you best. If you never rent cars, you might not care about having the best car rental coverage. Maybe you care most about making sure you’re covered in the event of delays (after all, these are happening more these days). Either way, prioritize what’s important to you.

But no matter what card you get, I still recommend getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy to cover you for medical mishaps that may happen on the road. That way you’re protected no matter what happens.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Consider upgrading your travel experience with the right credit card

Who should get a credit card for international travel?

Anyone who frequently travels internationally should consider getting a credit card for international travel. There are added costs and hassles associated with traveling abroad that these credit cards can eliminate. With the right credit card, you’ll earn bonus points in popular spending categories restricted abroad.

You don’t have to be a frequent traveler to benefit from these cards either. They can provide peace of mind by serving as a backup form of payment if your debit or cash is lost or stolen while abroad. In fact, the right credit card can serve you well even when you’re just going about your daily routine.

Below are some of the features and benefits you should look for when choosing a credit card for international travel:

How to choose the best credit card for international travel

When it comes to international travel, selecting the right credit card is essential. The right credit card can save you money on fees and travel expenses and provide you with a range of benefits to make your trip easier and more enjoyable. Here are some tips for choosing the best credit card for international travel:

No foreign transaction fees:  Many credit cards charge a fee of up to 3% when you use them abroad. Look for a card that doesn’t charge these fees so you can save money when making purchases in other countries.

Bonus points on travel:  Many cards offer rewards in popular spending categories like travel, dining, groceries and gas. These points can then be redeemed for free flights, hotel stays or other travel perks. Some credit cards limit bonus points on dining and grocery spending to U.S. supermarkets and restaurants only. You’ll want a card in your wallet that offers bonus points in the U.S. and abroad since these expenses add up during travels.

Trusted traveler programs:  Navigating airports can be a stressful experience both in the U.S. and abroad. Trusted traveler programs like TSA Precheck , Global Entry and NEXUS can eliminate the hassle (and long lines). When choosing a credit card for international travel, consider one that offers an application fee credit for trusted traveler programs. These credits can offset high annual fees and make your next trip abroad much more pleasant.

What is a travel credit card?

A travel credit card is a card that earns points or miles on your spending and usually offers the best redemption values when those rewards are used for travel.

Generally, there are two types of travel rewards cards:

  • Cobranded cards: These earn a specific currency tied to an airline or hotel brand, like Delta SkyMiles or Hilton Honors points.
  • Flexible cards: These earn “flexible” rewards, like American Express Membership Rewards or Citi ThankYou points, that can be used to book travel across several hotels and airlines.

Co-branded cards typically earn higher rewards for purchases made within the brand and general travel cards tend to earn rewards that can be redeemed for more types of travel.

How do travel credit cards work?

With a travel credit card, you’ll earn points or miles as you spend. When you’ve accumulated enough rewards, you can redeem them for flights, hotels and other travel expenses. Redemption options will vary depending on your card. Some issuers offer boosted redemption rates for booking through their travel portal, while others allow you to transfer points directly to airline and hotel partners or apply them as a statement credit to cover travel charges made with the card.

Many travel credit cards also come with perks for travelers, like a free checked bag for your flight, a free annual hotel night or a credit towards the application fee for a trusted traveler program like Global Entry or TSA PreCheck .

“Travel rewards cards are a great way to leverage personal and business card use and turn it into free airline tickets and hotel rooms. Be sure to choose a card that has rewards that are applicable to your preferred airline and hotel brands”, said John Ulzheimer, president of The Ulzheimer Group and nationally recognized credit expert.

Benefits of travel credit cards

Travel rewards credit cards offer a range of benefits to frequent and occasional travelers alike:

  • Earn rewards for everyday spending. Use your travel credit card to pay for purchases you’d be making anyway and earn rewards you can use for travel.
  • Lower the out-of-pocket cost of travel. Whether you use your points to pay for airfare, nights at a hotel or for a rental car, redeeming your earnings for travel can significantly reduce the cost of a trip.
  • Receive free nights, checked bags and other perks. Many cobranded credit cards come with a free night perk or waive the fees for checking luggage, both of which can save you money and may be worth more than the cost of the card itself.
  • Enjoy new travel experiences. Stories abound of people who have used their credit card rewards to take over-the-top luxury trips. Even if an overwater villa in the Maldives is not your thing, having enough points for a free flight or hotel may be enough incentive to nudge you towards taking a trip to a new city or to see family and friends in far-flung places.

Who should get a travel credit card?

Most people can benefit from a travel credit card. Whether you’re a frequent traveler or are just looking for an occasional getaway, there’s likely a travel rewards card out there that can help you maximize your savings.

Consider how you like to travel and what you’re looking to achieve with a new travel card. Points and miles programs can be complex, and some travel credit cards require time and energy to get the most value. Other credit cards offer straightforward redemption as statement credits to offset a variety of travel spending you do directly with airlines, hotels and other travel services. Take time to plan how you would get the most out of a prospective rewards program and its transfer partners, or whether you’d be better off with a simpler approach.

Before you shell out a high annual fee for a perk-laden card, consider if the benefits it comes with are ones you’d actually use. In many cases, taking full advantage of statement credits, anniversary bonuses and other perks like free nights can more than offset the annual fee .

If you rarely travel and are considering saving up over a long period of time for a trip, keep in mind that rewards don’t earn interest. In fact, rewards often lose value over time and may even expire . It’s a general best practice not to sit on your rewards for too long.

Types of travel credit cards

Travel credit cards often provide a wide range of benefits, from travel and purchase protections to airfare and hotel redemptions.

Understanding the different types of travel rewards cards is the first step to finding the right card for you. There are several major types of travel credit cards:

Airline-specific cards

The best airline credit cards offer exclusive discounts and rewards when you use them with a specific airline. Many also offer free companion tickets or priority boarding benefits. Examples of cobranded airline cards include:

Hotel-specific cards

These cards may give you access to exclusive discounts at certain hotel chains and resorts, as well as rewards to be redeemed for free nights or upgrades. Hotel loyalty status is a common benefit among the best hotel credit cards . Examples of cobranded hotel cards include:

Flexible points cards

These cards allow you to earn points for every dollar spent that can be redeemed for flights, hotel stays, car rentals and other travel bookings. Major issuers often offer boosted earning or redemption rates when using their online travel booking portals. These cards may also allow you to transfer points to airline or hotel partners, providing the most flexibility when it comes to redemptions. Examples include:

  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® * The information for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Flexible rewards vs. airline or hotel credit cards

For those who travel often but don’t have a particular brand loyalty, the best travel card is likely one that earns flexible rewards on every purchase. Flexible rewards are not tied to a specific airline or hotel loyalty program but rather to a card issuer’s travel agency redemption program. Chase Ultimate Rewards® and American Express Membership Rewards® are two examples, but Capital One offers Miles , Citi offers ThankYou® Points and other major issuers have similar reward programs.

Airline- and hotel-specific cards offer rewards tied to a loyalty program with the airline or hotel, and typically offer better value with that carrier or brand, but not as much flexibility with redemption options. Only apply for a card like this if you’re sure the brand is the one you want.

If you only take an occasional trip, then a more flexible reward card may be a better choice.

Cash-back cards offer simpler reward redemptions and the rewards earned can still be used toward future trips or redeemed for gift cards or other rewards if travel remains a priority.

How to compare and choose the best travel rewards card

When it comes to choosing the right card for your needs, there are several factors to consider:

  • What type of rewards do you want to earn? General points that can be used for travel expenses with different airlines and hotels are more flexible, but if you’re loyal to a particular travel brand you can earn their specific currency and enjoy elevated status and other perks.
  • Does the card come with a good welcome bonus? Many cards offer a generous welcome bonus (sometimes called a sign-up bonus) when you spend a certain amount on purchases in the first few months of receiving the card. This can be an easy way to get an infusion of rewards when you first open your account — but when calculating a card’s value, remember the welcome bonus is a one-time deal.
  • Are you willing to pay the annual fee? Some cards have no annual fee, while others come with a hefty price tag but offer more generous rewards or benefits. Make sure you understand all the fees before making a decision so that you don’t end up paying for benefits you won’t actually use.
  • Does it come with any additional benefits that offer value? Card perks such as travel insurance , airport lounge access or exclusive discounts and offers can help make your travel smoother and your card more cost effective.

Evaluating reward potential

“Something to keep in mind when it comes to earning travel rewards is that your mileage may vary. Often the best value redemptions will come when used for less-traveled destinations or off-peak travel times. And your rewards redemptions don’t have to be luxurious to be meaningful. Some of my most cherished memories have come from when I’ve used rewards to visit family and friends where the location was not the focus,” – Robin Saks Frankel, USA TODAY Blueprint lead editor credit cards

We evaluate the reward potential of travel rewards credit cards based on what we’d expect a household in the 50th percentile of wage earners to spend each year on a credit card. We gather these figures from government sources and other publicly available data.

In a year, we expect a household might spend about $25,087 of this on a credit card. Of this credit card spending, we’d expect about $2,941 to be spent on overall travel — which breaks down as $1,188 spent on airfare, $868 spent on hotels and $885 spent on all other travel. For frequent travelers carrying high-annual-fee travel rewards cards — like the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , which charges an annual fee of $395 — we expect about twice this much spending in the travel categories.

The Capital One Venture X earns 2 miles per $1 on purchases, 5 miles per $1 on flights booked through Capital One Travel and on purchases through Capital One Entertainment and 10 miles per $1 on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel.

Using government data and other publicly available information, we estimate that a household in the U.S. that would be in the market for this card has an annual income of $84,352 and $25,087 in annual expenses they are likely to be able to charge to a credit card. Here’s how our sample household would fare with the Capital One Venture X Card:

The cardholder in this example earns a grand total of 85,350 miles annually, which is worth $853.50 if used to book travel through Capital One or when eligible travel is booked elsewhere and you redeem your miles to cover the purchase.

The right travel card can net you lucrative rewards. But make sure to select a card based on your spending and travel habits — the best card for travel will differ from person to person.

Tips for maximizing your travel credit card

There are several ways to get the most out of your travel credit card:

  • Pay your bill on time every month and aim to pay it in full. If you carry a balance, the accumulated interest fees will likely be more than the value of any rewards earned on the card.
  • Try to earn the card’s welcome bonus. Top travel cards offer outsized welcome bonuses for new cardholders who can meet a minimum spending requirement. Earning that bonus can give a nice boost to your rewards balance.
  • Be aware of the perks your card offers. Many travel cards offer discounts or statement credits for travel-related spending, like a discount within a hotel collection, cellphone insurance or elite status within a brand. Knowing what your card comes with means you can fully maximize those benefits.
  • Don’t sit on your rewards for too long. Unlike money in the bank, travel rewards do not earn interest and may actually be worth less over time. The value of your rewards is often tied to the cash price of travel and travel only tends to get more expensive year-over-year.

How to travel for cheaper with travel cards in 2024

New year, new travel possibilities. What’s more, it’s entirely possible to travel for cheaper by maximizing your credit card strategy with the right travel cards in hand. There are droves of rewards cards to choose from, so it can be hard to choose the right one for you.

Travel credit cards earn points or miles that can be redeemed for flights, hotels, rental cars and more, helping you subsidize the cost of your trip expenses. Beyond earning rewards, some cards even come with airport lounge access or credits to offset your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee.

For many travelers, a one-punch solution is the best fit. We’re talking about general travel credit cards , which earn rewards through a bank like American Express, Capital One, Chase, or Citi and don’t tie you to a specific airline or hotel program. Instead, the cardholder has the choice to redeem their earnings how they please toward any travel purchase.

Best places to travel with rewards in 2024

While a European summer vacation never goes out of style, traveling during the shoulder season is the true winner. With fewer crowds, cheaper accommodations and pleasant weather, a fall trip to Portugal this year should be on your list.

If you’ve got travel rewards cards from American Express, Bilt, Capital One, Chase or Citi, you can transfer your points or miles over to the Air Canada Aeroplan program. You can book a business class flight from Miami (MIA) to Lisbon (LIS) in October 2024 for just 70,000 miles one way.

There’s so much to love about Costa Rica, from its lush jungles to the natural wildlife. Plus, this Central American country is quite accessible from many states in the U.S. With two main international airports — Liberia (LIR) and San José (SJO) — the toughest decision you’ll need to make is which part of Costa Rica to visit.

Many major U.S. airlines fly to Costa Rica, so redeeming your rewards for a flight shouldn’t be too difficult depending on where your loyalty lies. For example, United Airlines offers a flight from Raleigh-Durham (RDU) to Liberia (LIR) with a layover in Houston (IAH). You’ll pay just 20,000 MileagePlus miles one-way — even during the peak winter season.

One of the best ways to fly the whole family to Hawaii is by setting your sights on the British Airways Avios program. Earning points is a breeze: You can transfer your American Express Membership Rewards® , Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards®, Citi ThankYou® Points or Capital One Miles to this program at a simple 1:1 ratio.

Because British Airways is part of the Oneworld airline alliance, you can redeem your Avios for partner airlines like American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Both of these carriers offer plenty of routes to the Aloha State.

Nonstop routes are priced favorably for just 17,500 Avios plus $18.10 in taxes and fees for a one way flight from the West Coast. Depending on when you’re traveling, you may also be able to find multiple award seats per flight. This is great news for big families.

Alternatives to travel credit cards

Instead of earning points or miles, you might consider a cash-back credit card to get a percentage back on all your purchases. Cash-back cards are generally more straightforward than travel rewards programs — after all, a dollar is a dollar — and often come with no annual fees.

If you’re not ready to commit to a travel rewards program or simply don’t travel enough to reap the full benefits of a travel credit card, a cash-back credit card is a great way to still earn rewards on spending.

When it comes to choosing a cash-rewards card , you can keep it simple with a straightforward flat-rate card such as the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card , which earns 2% cash rewards on purchases.

Or you can pick a card with higher rewards rates in your biggest spending categories. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express (terms apply, rates & fees ) offers 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%), 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions, 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations, 3% cash back on transit and 1% cash back on other purchases. Cash back is received in the form of Rewards Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit or for eligible items at Amazon.com checkout. The card has a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

There’s no one “best” card that’s right for everyone. The best travel card for you will depend on a combination of factors including how often you travel, how you travel, your tolerance for annual fees and what you’re looking for in a travel card.

Generally speaking, the best travel credit cards earn bonus category rewards on airfare, hotels, car rentals and even dining. These cards typically also offer bonus points or miles when you spend a certain amount within the first few months of opening the account. Some will also offer perks such as travel protections, elite status with an airline or hotel loyalty program , priority boarding and airport lounge access.

The exact credit score needed for a travel rewards credit card will vary depending on the issuer and the specific card. Generally, you will need at least a good credit score, typically from 670 to 739 on the FICO Score scale — to be approved for most travel rewards cards. However, some of the more premium cards may require an excellent credit score, typically defined as a FICO Score of 740 or higher.

The most rewarding travel rewards cards, including most of the cards on this list, are not likely to offer approval to anyone without a good or better credit score. Some issuers also have rules in place preventing you from applying for a credit card, travel or otherwise, if you’ve applied for a certain number of cards within a certain period of time.

The best type of card for you will depend on your spending habits and your financial goals. If you’re a loyal frequent flyer with an airline, an airline rewards card might make the most sense. If you spend plentifully at a specific hotel brand, you may be better suited to a hotel credit card.

If you’re not sure, or you have a wider variety of needs, a card with flexible point currencies — like the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. or Chase Sapphire Preferred Card — may be a better bet.

Finally, If you’re looking for a simple way to get cash back on everyday purchases, then a cash-back credit card may be the way to go. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual needs and preferences — and in some cases, you might have a pattern of spending that justifies having both in your wallet.

The exact value of a point or mile earned on a travel credit card will depend on the type of point or mile and how you redeem it. In most cases, you should look to get at least a penny per point of value.  Points values vary because many airline and hotel pricing structures are dynamic and will change based on demand. The points values tend to be somewhat fixed however and this can lead to redemption values worth more – or less – than 1 cent each. Transferring rewards to airline programs when allowed and redeeming for business and first-class seating can often yield greater values per point.

Yes, travel credit cards with annual fees are worth it if you make the most of what the card has to offer. While travel credit cards with annual fees aren’t necessarily worth it for everyone, they certainly can be if you know you’ll get more value from the rewards and benefits than you’ll pay to hold the card each year. Generally speaking, the higher the annual fee, the better the perks.

If you’re earning flexible rewards such as American Express Membership Rewards® Points or Chase Ultimate Rewards®, these generally don’t expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing.

However, points or miles earned on cobranded cards are a mixed bag. Some points don’t expire for the life of your account, while others will expire if there’s no account activity within the last 12 to 24 months. Read your card’s terms and conditions to see the expiration policy for your rewards.

There’s no difference between points and miles on a credit card, they’re simply two different ways to describe rewards. Airline cards tend to use the term “miles” (probably because it evokes the spirit of the miles you fly), while hotel and general rewards cards tend to use the term “points.” However, the two terms serve the same purpose: they’re a way of measuring both the rewards you earn on a particular credit card and the number of rewards it will take for a particular redemption.

There’s no one “best” card for international travel since there’s no one “best” way to travel. The best credit card for international travel for you will be the one where the rewards rates best align with your spending patterns. You’ll also have to decide if a card that comes with robust benefits is worth paying the annual fee versus a card with less bountiful benefits but a lower annual fee.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card review: A top travel and dining card

Madison Blancaflor

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card overview

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the best-known travel rewards credit cards , featuring 5 points per dollar on travel booked through Chase Travel℠ and Lyft purchases, 3 points per dollar on dining, select streaming services and online grocery store purchases (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs), 2 points per dollar on all other travel purchases and 1 point per dollar on everything else. These valuable points can be transferred to airline and hotel partners or redeemed directly for travel at a rate of 1.25 cents per point through Chase Travel℠. Card rating*: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

* Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

At TPG, we always get asked an important question from beginner travelers looking to plan trips: Which travel credit card should I start with?

We almost universally recommend the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card because it earns one of our favorite rewards currencies and comes with valuable perks for a low annual fee. In fact, many of us started our journey into points and miles with this card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is designed for frequent and casual travelers. With a $95 annual fee, it's not an expensive card, which makes it an especially good choice for beginners.

The recommended credit score is at least 700 to qualify for the Sapphire Preferred , but it's not unheard of for someone to be approved with a lower score.

Here's what you need to know about the Chase Sapphire Preferred and why it's one of the best cards out there .

Chase Sapphire Preferred pros and cons

Chase sapphire preferred welcome offer.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred has a welcome offer of 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

rbc travel insurance visa preferred

This haul of points is worth a minimum of $750 when redeemed for travel through the Chase portal, but you can maximize value by utilizing Chase's transfer partners. TPG values Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 2.05 cents each, making this bonus worth $1,230.

Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits

In addition to the sign-up bonus, there are many appealing perks to being a Sapphire Preferred cardholder.

You'll receive a statement credit of up to $50 on hotel stays purchased through Chase Travel upon opening the card and on each account anniversary. It's automatically applied to your account each year when you make an eligible charge. Note, however, that the $50 credit does not earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

I always use this hotel credit when I am overseas in a small city with no chain hotels where I won't earn any elite nights or loyalty points since booking through an OTA like Chase Travel typically doesn't qualify you for elite status benefits at hotels.

Cardholders also enjoy a 10% anniversary points bonus each year. This 10% bonus is based on your total spending during the account anniversary year at a rate of 1 point for each $10 spent. If, for example, you spend $100,000 on your Sapphire Preferred during your cardmember year, you'll receive 10,000 bonus points at the end of the year.

However, this 10% bonus is calculated from the dollars you spent rather than the points you earned, meaning you won't receive additional points by leveraging the card's bonus categories.

rbc travel insurance visa preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred also includes at least one year of complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership , which includes perks like free delivery and reduced service fees on eligible purchases (activate by Dec. 31). There is a cost associated with using food delivery services such as DoorDash, but this can be a valuable benefit if you already use the service.

Additionally, you'll get six months of Instacart+ and a $15 statement credit quarterly on qualifying Instacart purchases. You must enroll for this benefit by July 31 through the Instacart website .

Finally, the Sapphire Preferred is an ideal choice for travel bookings such as car rentals, cruises, plane tickets and hotels because it comes with comprehensive travel and purchase protections. Among them, cardholders can expect the following:

  • Primary rental car coverage
  • Trip delay insurance
  • Trip cancellation insurance
  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Purchase protection
  • Extended warranty protection

Earning points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred has a simple earning structure that is easy to maximize :

  • 5 points per dollar on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 5 points per dollar on Lyft purchases (through March 2025)
  • 5 points per dollar on Peloton equipment and accessory purchases of $150 or more (through March 2025, with a limit of 25,000 bonus points)
  • 3 points per dollar on dining, select streaming services and online grocery store purchases (excludes Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs)
  • 2 points per dollar on all travel not booked through the Chase Travel portal
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else

Those are some of the best earnings rates in the game, particularly when you consider you're earning valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Redeeming points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred

When you're ready to redeem the points you've earned with the Chase Sapphire Preferred , you'll understand why the card shines.

You can use your points to purchase airfare, reserve hotel rooms and even rent a car through Chase Travel — all at a fixed rate of 1.25 cents per point. That means you don't need to worry about blackout dates or finding award space; you'll always have the option to book travel using your points. As long as a seat for sale on the flight you want or a hotel room is available to reserve with cash, you can pay for it with your points.

rbc travel insurance visa preferred

Just note that hotel reservations booked through third-party sites (including Chase Travel) typically won't earn points or count toward elite status qualification.

You also have the option to redeem your points for cash-back or gift cards at a rate of 1 cent per point or for a slightly higher value when you take advantage of Chase's Pay Yourself Back option. Still, these redemption options are less valuable than transferring your points to Chase's travel partners, so we recommend avoiding them when possible.

Transferring points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred

By transferring your Chase points, you can receive more than 1.25 cents per point in value by moving rewards to Chase's 14 airline and hotel partners . Some of the best Chase transfer partners include Hyatt , United , British Airways and Singapore Airlines for luxury hotels and plane seats.

rbc travel insurance visa preferred

Utilizing these transfer partners can net you phenomenal value. Chase frequently runs transfer bonus promotions where you can get up to 30% more points or miles when you transfer Ultimate Rewards to a transfer partner.

For example, TPG credit cards writer Chris Nelson regularly transfers points to Hyatt and has gotten rooms during peak season in Europe for as low as 4,000 points a night. Hyatt has plenty of great sweet spot redemptions, making it an especially valuable transfer partner.

Which cards compete with the Chase Sapphire Preferred?

Many worthwhile mid-tier travel credit cards exist, but only a few can go toe-to-toe with the Sapphire Preferred . If you're trying to decide which is best for you, consider which card's earning power suits your spending habits and which transfer partners you're more likely to maximize.

  • If you prefer Capital One: The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is your best bet. The card offers 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar on all purchases, plus a welcome bonus of 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. For more information, read our full review of the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card .
  • If you prefer American Express: The American Express® Green Card offers a high earning rate on travel, restaurants and transit. Annual Clear Plus and LoungeBuddy credits offset its $150 annual fee. Plus, Amex has more transfer partners than Chase and offers more transfer bonuses throughout the year.
  • If you want more perks: The Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers higher earning rates on travel purchases and more valuable benefits like a $300 annual travel credit and airport lounge access. For more information, read our full review of the Sapphire Reserve.

For additional options, check out our full list of the best starter credit cards .

Bottom line

If you're ready to move beyond cash-back or fixed-value travel rewards credit cards, there is no better place to start than with the Chase Sapphire Preferred .

After its debut over a decade ago, it's still regarded as one of the best rewards credit cards . It earns some of the most valuable points and is flexible enough to meet the reward needs of frequent and newbie travelers alike. As long you're using the card frequently enough to get more than $95 in value from it, this card is definitely worth the annual cost.

Visa Infinite: Everything you need to know, from rental car perks to lounge access

I f you have a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , United Club℠ Infinite Card or the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite® Card , you may have noticed that it carries " Visa Infinite " branding.

Since only a few cards in the U.S. are Visa Infinite products, we don't blame you if you're a bit clueless as to what this designation entails. In addition to the cards mentioned, there aren't many other Visa Infinite cards that are easy to obtain.

We'll outline the perks of the Visa Infinite program below, but the first thing to know is that Visa Infinite cards are a step up from the more common Visa Signature designation found on cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card .

As we review the benefits, remember these are the possible perks available through the Visa Infinite program. Specific issuers can tweak or exclude certain ones, as you'll see with the variation in lounge access benefits.

The information for the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Global entry application fee credit.

This Visa Infinite program will reimburse you for the $100 fee when you apply for Global Entry . While this program is worth signing up for to breeze through immigration, several other premium travel rewards cards also offer a Global Entry fee reimbursement , so this shouldn't factor too heavily in your decision to get a Visa Infinite card.

Car rental privileges

Cardholders get special discounts at car rental providers such as Avis , National and Hertz and are eligible for various VIP amenities. The Visa Infinite program offers primary car rental insurance (more on that later in the post), so using an eligible card could be a great choice for renting a set of wheels.

Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection

When you book a hotel stay with a Visa Infinite card, you'll enjoy perks such as an automatic room upgrade on arrival (when available), free Wi-Fi and complimentary continental breakfast. Your Visa Infinite card will get you all the benefits available to Visa Signature cardholders, plus an extra amenity at over 200 locations.

Note that the extra amenity you receive will vary by location. If you're looking for a particular one, it's a good idea to verify what amenity you'll receive before booking.

Visa Infinite Concierge

Like most premium card programs, the Visa Infinite program includes a dedicated concierge service that can assist with travel and dining arrangements, shopping, access to exclusive events and more. You can expect great service and assistance with almost whatever outing you plan. The service is available 24/7, 365 days a year, and can be used domestically or abroad.

Priority Pass lounge access

Having a credit card with airport lounge access can be a game changer, and Priority Pass is the biggest airport lounge network with more than 1,500 locations worldwide. The exact lounge access privileges you'll get vary depending on the card.

For example, the Sapphire Reserve comes with a full Priority Pass Select membership , which gets the cardholder and up to two guests unlimited lounge visits. On the other hand, the Altitude Reserve card comes with eight Priority Pass lounge visits per year. Each person who visits, whether they're a guest or the primary cardholder, will use up one of these eight passes, so plan accordingly.

Airline incidentals statement credit

With your Visa Infinite card, you may enjoy rebates for certain expenses associated with your flight. Examples include checked luggage charges and inflight food purchases. This benefit isn't included on all Visa Infinite cards, so check your particular card's terms and benefits. For example, the Sapphire Reserve offers an up to $300 travel credit and airline incidental fees are included under eligible charges.

Travel and lifestyle protections

Primary rental car insurance.

Through Visa Infinite, you can get primary coverage* for up to $75,000 due to damage (caused by collision or theft) to a rental car. Visa Infinite cards aren't the only options to offer this coverage — the Chase Sapphire Preferred and a few others do as well — but this is a great perk to have since you won't need to file a claim with your own insurance company in the event of an accident or theft.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance

Visa Infinite cards offer trip cancellation and interruption insurance.** This includes reimbursement of up to $2,000 per insured trip for nonrefundable expenses when you cancel a trip for a covered reason or when your trip is interrupted or delayed for a covered reason.

There's a full list of "covered reasons," but if you're suffering from a serious illness or injury, you can expect this benefit to be offered. In addition, Visa Infinite provides trip delay insurance.*** You'll get coverage for expenses (up to $500 per day) when a purchased trip is delayed more than six hours or requires an overnight stay.

Lost luggage reimbursement

Yet another travel protection Visa Infinite cardholders enjoy is lost luggage reimbursement.*** If your checked or carry-on baggage is lost or stolen on a common carrier, the program will reimburse you up to $3,000 (up to $2,000 for New York residents) per covered trip.

You're eligible for this coverage when you pay for at least a portion of the travel with your Visa Infinite card or with the rewards associated with the card. Having lost luggage protection is a great way to relieve stress during a trip. It's frustrating when an airline loses your luggage, but you can at least get some compensation with the right protection.

Extended warranty, purchase protection and return protection

When you purchase a product with a warranty of three years or less, you'll get an extra year of coverage*** for up to $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per cardholder. This isn't the only coverage option out there; for more options, take a look at our list of the best cards with extended warranty protection .

If an item is stolen or damaged within 90 days from the purchase date — and you purchased it with a Visa Infinite Card — you'll be covered for up to $10,000 per claim (up to $50,000 per cardholder). With purchase protection coverage,*** you can either be reimbursed, have the item repaired or get a replacement.

In addition to purchase protection that covers you in the event of theft or damage, the Visa Infinite program offers return protection*** coverage of up to $300 per item and $1,000 per year when you're unhappy with a product and the retailer won't accept a return. To be eligible, you must pay for the purchase with your Visa Infinite card and file a claim within 90 days of the purchase date.

Other protections that may be included with your Visa Infinite card include cellphone protection, emergency evacuation, hotel theft protection and price protection. Check the benefits of your specific Visa Infinite card to find out if it offers these protections.

Bottom line

Like other premium credit card programs, Visa Infinite offers a nice array of benefits for your rewards credit card .

The airport lounge access and primary car rental insurance can certainly come in handy. Other perks like car rental discounts and special treatment at hotels aren't unique to the program, but they can absolutely add to the value you get from your card — not a bad thing if you're paying $550 a year for the Chase Sapphire Reserve .
