Nepal Tourist Visa Fee:

Though there is an exemption on visas for an Indian citizen to visit Nepal, some documents are required for verification and the immigration process. This is applied to the Indian nationals travelling to Nepal having their legal status as a citizen of India.

Effective from 1st October 2000 an Indian citizen over the age of 18 years travelling between India and Nepal by air would have to keep in his/her possession any of the following documents to establish his/her identity as an Indian citizen.

Since the pandemic has hit most of the world now, the post-COVID travel scene is different as per the country. This has forced the travel industry to adapt to the new set of regulations. As per the regulations set by the government of Nepal, if you are traveling from India to Nepal, you are required to have a vaccination certificate or a negative PCR certificate tested within 24 hours of departure. An International Traveler Form as provided by CCMC should be filled out before departing from India.

This information is as per the present scene and in the future, the regulation may change or be modified according to the decision of the Ministry of Health, Covid Control Management Committee, Nepal.

International Airport Arrival Procedures

Indian Nationals who are visiting Nepal, need to go through Immigration at the International Airport of Nepal. After fulfilling the immigration requirements, proceed towards the baggage collection and Arrival exit.

The airport arrival process is easy for Indian citizens as there is no need to obtain a visa, considering the person entering the country is carrying either a Valid Indian Passport, Voter ID, or emergency certificate issued by the Embassy of India in Nepal.

If the person is traveling to Nepal, having their arrangements made by Holidays to Nepal Pvt. Ltd., a representative from the company will be at the main exit gate, displaying the name as discussed prior to arrival. This will make the pick-up process easy and the swift arrangements will come into effect after the arrival of the traveler. The rest of the domestic travel process can be discussed at the accommodation facility of the tourist.

Upon arrival, you can connect to the available wifi at the airport and contact us to update your situation on the arrival process. We can inform our representatives and ask him/her to prepare accordingly.

As of now, there isn’t any duty-free facility at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal. In the near future, we can expect to have a duty-free service at the airport. However, there are Duty Paid shops with limited capacity in the Departure terminal to serve travelers.

Currency/Payments

The nepalese rupee (nepali: रुपैयाँ; symbol: रु; code: npr) is the official currency of nepal. the currency of nepal is pegged with the indian currency (inr) at the rate of 1.6. (i.e. inr 1= npr 1.60)..

It is also important to note that as per the circular issued by the Reserve Bank of Nepal, Indian currency having a denomination of 100 or less is accepted all over the country. But if you are traveling to Nepal, you do not have to worry about currency issues or having to carry a hefty sum of 100 rupees. The local money exchange or travel companies can easily exchange your money with any denomination to NPR.

“If you are worried about paying the travel company, we accept Indian currency and also if you need any exchange facility, we can help you do that.”

For the Payment process, you can transfer the amount to the SBI Bank of Nepal from the SBI Bank of India. Or you can transfer the amount to our Indian bank accounts. The account details will be provided in private mail.

The vehicle and transportation for Indian tourists are governed by the tourist vehicle association and provided by travel companies. The vehicle charges differ according to the type of vehicle required. In Nepal, the charge of the vehicle is not determined on a mile basis, instead, it's on the basis of sightseeing and places you visit.

Mostly, we organize private trips. So we only provide vehicles on a private basis. However, SIC transfers between some prominent cities of Nepal are available for people who want to explore Nepal in a sufficient time period.

We provide vehicle services to tourists visiting Nepal. In most cases, the vehicle is included in the tour cost. However, if you have requested vehicle-only service, the cost as per the itinerary will be provided. The disclosure on a lump-sum basis will not be entertained as there are varied determinants that decide the cost of the vehicle. However, for the add-on plans set during the trip, pro-rata charges according to the places you visit will be applicable.

Most of Nepal is untouched by the railway facility. Only one railway service is available in Nepal and that too is in the lowlands of Janakpur. It connects the Nepal and India border. To visit most of the country, you either have to take flights, a helicopter, or the drive option. But if you are planning to reach the remote mountains of Nepal, you may have only the option to trek in the mountains.

Most of Nepal is connected by domestic flights. So, you may have to reach some of the places, depending upon the itinerary tailored, by flight. In such cases, we provide airport transfers. Some of the major tourist places such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Janakpur, Lumbini, Mustang, Lukla, etc. have flight accessibility. However, in the case of Lukla, a flight is the only option to reach there.

During the boarding process of a domestic flight, any of the aforementioned travel documents are required for the passenger verification process.

There are some remote mountain areas, where only small aircraft such as twin otters or STOL aircraft provide flight services. In such fleets, there are chances of cancellations and delays due to rapidly changing weather conditions. In such cases, if the vehicle transportation is accessible, you will be escorted via vehicle. But if that’s not also the case, you will have to wait until the flight becomes functional. This is mostly applicable for the flights to Lukla and Jomsom.

Entrance fees are collected for the welfare and development of the place. In most tourist places, entrance fees are applicable. However, for Indian nationals, entrance fees are exempted in some places, and in some places the fees are lower than the foreigners. This is mainly due to the neighboring bond and bilateral relations between the two countries.

For instance, in Pashupatinath temple, Indian nationals do not have to pay entrance fees. These charges are mostly excluded from our trips. And travelers are required to pay the entry charges at the point of entrance fee collection. This makes the due process convenient for the travelers as well as the company.

Nepal is a country of multi-ethnicity and cultural attributes. This country, ever since the beginning of civilization, has been ranked as a culturally enriched and diverse place. In such a small territory, there are diverse cultural groups with their own food and beverages.

In most of the places you visit, you can get Dal Bhat Tarkari. In the eateries of Kathmandu, Pokhara and other urban tourist cities, you can easily get other continental and fusion food items. However, during trekking time in the remote mountains, eating what’s there may be the only choice.

For vegetarian Indian citizens, there are so many Indian vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Kathmandu and Pokhara . In every place, if you are a vegetarian, you can request a veg food item. Hotels also provide vegetarian food as per the choice of the traveler.

If you are fond of beverages, you can get local and international beverage items in the urban cities of Nepal. In remote places, that may not be an affordable luxury.

The weather condition is also an important factor to understand in Nepal. If you are traveling to Nepal in Spring and Autumn, the weather and climate are moderate. The visibility is clear and the temperature is moderate with a pleasant atmosphere. In these months, the chances of flight delay and cancellation are also low.

Table: Kathmandu Temperature, Source: Weatherspark

During peak monsoons, during the months of June and July, traveling can be difficult due to frequent rainfall and flight delay. However, if you are traveling via the drive option, it is still possible and quite safe to visit some of the places in Nepal.

Table : Average Rainfall, Source: Weatherspark

The Winter season is also a good time in terms of the places you visit. However, if you are traveling to explore mountains, you might not get clear visibility. But for pilgrimage and leisure purposes, every month in Nepal is enjoyable and offers a wonderful experience in the incredible Nepali hospitality.

Spring, Summer, and Autumn have moderate temperatures. A light jacket and summer cloth will do in most places. However, if you are planning to visit the higher mountain areas of Nepal, depending upon the weather, you may have to carry winter jackets and clothes. Winter clothes are important during the winter season. In the outskirts of the valleys and higher elevations, there are chances of snowfall and light rain. So, carrying appropriate clothes to stay safe from frostbite and cold is important.

Health and Safety is also major concern when visiting a foreign land. If any health issues are encountered during the trip, there are many well-equipped hospitals in Nepal for your medical assistance. If you are worried about safety issues, Nepal is one of the safest countries for visitors.

The people in Nepal are hospitable. The guests in Nepal are treated with the utmost respect and given value. However, if you have encountered any issues and something doesn’t feel right during your trip, you can always get emergency support from the security personnel and even your associated travel company can assist you in the process.

Some Health and Safety Tips for Your Nepal Trip:-

Don’t use tap water in Nepal. It’s best to use mineral water.

Always eat at a good restaurant and eatery where hygiene is maintained.

If you are travelling to high elevations in the mountains of Nepal, it is best to avoid cigarettes and alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages sometimes trigger altitude sickness.

Eat healthy foods.

If you are visiting Muktinath temple and other high elevation areas, there are chances of High Altitude Sickness. So, it’s important to remain hydrated and energised.

If you have any health issues or previous medical history, it's better to consult your physician before travelling to the higher elevations and inform your travel agent of the same.

While hiking in the mountains, stay on the uphill side of the trail to let the Donkeys and Mules pass.

During hiking, stay on the trail to avoid leeches. Use salt to get rid of them and be extra careful during the monsoon season.

In case you are lost, try to contact your operator. If that’s not accessible, try returning the same way you came and get support from the locals. If you are in a difficult situation and not able to find your way back, contact your tour operator and tourist police.

It is always safe to trek or hike with a local companion or a guide.

Wear sunglasses if you are in exposure to bright sunlight, especially in the snow.

You can experience so many available adventurous things in Nepal beyond a scheduled itinerary. Some adventure to the trip gives a wonderful touch to the experience. Everest Mountain Flight, Paragliding, Mountain Biking, Bungee Jumping, Canyoning, Jungle Safari in Chitwan, hiking, etc. are some of the options to explore in Nepal.

If you are keen to explore adventure activities in Nepal, visit Things to Do in Nepal . These optional activities are a part of add-on plans. And are not by default included in the package. So, if you want to do any of these activities, the cost will be raised separately.

Nepal is shaped by nature and culture. It has been one of the incredible places to explore due to its varied lifestyle, customs and geography . If you are traveling to Nepal, there are several things that you should know to maintain a healthy bond among the people of the places you visit.

Namaste is a welcoming act. You should always respond by saying the same. Putting palms together to show integrity and respect is something Nepalese people do to welcome their guests.

Do not enter temples and monasteries by wearing shoes. Leather jackets and shoes are also not appropriate clothing while visiting religious places.

Respect people around. No matter how they look, where they are, or what they do, giving respect always helps to maintain a healthy atmosphere and hospitable environment. It is not a travel etiquette but a dire need for humanity.

While staying in a hotel, if you have any complaints, you can politely ask the front desk personnel to make the necessary arrangements. If the problem is still not solved, asking your tour operator is a convenient way to sort the issue out.

Don’t hurt the sentiment of other people by sabotaging somebody’s character, ethics or morale. Nepal is mostly a Hindu country, so Hindu sentiments are widespread around.

Don’t take photographs in the ‘No Photo’ zone.

Do not litter.

Public display of affection is considered indecent in Nepal.

Market and Shopping

If you are traveling to Nepal, you can buy some souvenirs or necessary items in the Nepalese market. Thamel, Lakeside, Patan, and Durbarmarg are some popular areas to get clothes, handicrafts, footwear, and several other items. There are a lot of shops around.

In every tourist place you visit, there’s something you can buy. The local items carry a memoir of the visit and are a symbol of the travel spirit. In the evening, you can explore the nightlife in Thamel and Durbarmarg.

The Best Ways of Traveling From India to Nepal

procedure to visit nepal from india

Want to take a side trip from India to Nepal? It's a popular thing to do and there are a number of ways to go about it, depending on how much money you're prepared to spend. This guide outlines the best options for travel.

Do note that Indian citizens don't require a visa to enter Nepal. However, if traveling by air, Indian citizens must show a valid passport or Voter ID when checking in, and at immigration. Aadhaar Card is not a satisfactory form of identification. If traveling overland, other forms of government-issued identification can be used at border crossings. However, it's likely that no one will even be bothered to check.

Foreigners can obtain a Nepali tourist visa on arrival at the airport in Kathmandu. Nepali tourist visas are also available from immigration at land border crossings that are open to foreigners. In addition to your passport, you'll need passport-sized photos and possibly foreign currency (some crossings insist on payment in US dollars).

Delhi to Kathmandu

If you want to fly (and get some incredible Himalayan views), Delhi to Kathmandu is the least expensive, least time-consuming route by air to Nepal (under two hours). Otherwise, the best option is to take a train to Gorakhpur and then a bus. Taking the bus all the way has become slightly more appealing since the Delhi Transport Corporation launched a direct service to Kathmandu. However, it's still a long 25-hour haul.

Varanasi to Kathmandu

Many people travel overland from Varanasi to Kathmandu, either by bus, or train and bus combination. It takes less time than overland from Delhi (around 15 hours). It's also possible to fly. However, it's much costlier than from Delhi and there are very few direct flights.

Kolkata to Kathmandu

Nepal-based Buddha Air operates three direct flights a week from Kolkata to Kathmandu: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The flights depart at 9.05 a.m. and the flight time is about 90 minutes. Expect to pay about 20,000 rupees one way. Air India also operates direct flights for a slightly cheaper cost, starting at 15,000 rupees. Alternatively, you can go by land via the Raxaul or Panitanki borders (see more below).

Via the Sunauli Border Crossing

Most people going overland from north India to Nepal pass through the Sunauli border to Bhairahawa in central Nepal, accessible from rather unappealing Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh (although, pleasingly, Gorakhpur has become a lot cleaner in recent years). This is the biggest and busiest India-Nepal border crossing. There are frequent connections to Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lumbini from there.

Via the Raxaul Border Crossing

The Raxaul border crossing to Birgunj in southern-central Nepal is accessible from Patna in Bihar . It's most convenient for anyone traveling from Bodh Gaya or Kolkata. There are direct trains from Kolkata to Raxaul (16 hours). From Bodh Gaya, it's quicker to take a bus or car and travel by road as opposed to train (13 hours). From the border, buses take six to seven hours to reach Kathmandu and eight hours to Pokhara. Shared jeeps to Kathmandu are a quicker option and only take four to five hours.

Via the Panitanki Border Crossing

The Panitanki border crossing, to Kakarbhitta in far eastern Nepal, is accessible from Siliguri in West Bengal. It's most utilized by people traveling from Darjeeling, Kolkata, Sikkim and the rest of northeast India . Buses, taxis and shared jeeps run to the border from Siliguri, Kalimpong, and Gangtok in Sikkim. Siliguri to Panitanki (for those going from Darjeeling) takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Though the border crossing is open 24 hours, the Indian and Nepali immigration offices close are only open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. so foreigners should ensure that they arrive within this timeframe. There are regular buses to Kathmandu (14 to 16 hours) and Pokhara (15 hours) from Kakarbhitta. It's worth stopping at Chitwan National Park on the way to break the journey. Get off the bus at Sauraha (nine hours from Kakarbhitta), which is the closest town and travel hub to the park.

Via the Banbasa Border Crossing

This border crossing, at Banbasa in Uttarakhand , is the most westerly crossing into Nepal from India. It's the quickest, and most rural, route from Delhi to Kathmandu. Yet, it's still a long way from Mahendra Nagar (now officially called Bhimdatta) on the Nepali side of the border to Kathmandu. Buses take about 15 to 17 hours. Banbasa can be reached from Bareilly, Rudrapur, or Haldwani in Uttarakhand (three hours). It's possible to get buses to Pokhara and Kathmandu from Mahendra Nagar. If you're not short on time, it's worth visiting Bardiya National Park on the way (get off at Ambassa, about five hours from Mahendra Nagar. Thakurdwara is the closest village to the park and it's about 40 minutes from Ambassa).

Other Border Crossings

Two other border crossing points (from Jamunaha in Uttar Pradesh to Nepalganj in western Nepal, and Gauriphanta in Uttar Pradesh to Dhangadhi in far western Nepal) are open to tourists. However, they're difficult to reach and rarely used. Non-official border crossings at Janakpur, Biratnagar and Ilam rarely allow foreign tourists.

There are a few popular choices depending on whether you're traveling by air or overland. Delhi to Kathmandu is the cheapest and quickest (less than two hours) route by air to Nepal.

If traveling by bus or train, though, Varnasi to Kathmandu is the most popular route.

Varnasi to Kathmandu is the most popular route by train, but there are also direct trains from Kolkata to Raxaul.

Varnasi to Kathmandu is a popular route for traveling by bus. Additionally, from Bodh Gaya to the Raxaul border, it's possible to take a bus or car.

  • Online application submission receipt

Below 12 countries and any passport holders with refugee status must apply for the visa in person at the consulate of Nepal in their country of residence prior to travel to Nepal.

Immigration and Customs

Most airlines do not let you check-in online if you need a visa to travel to the destination country. If you check-in online or at the airport, either way, make sure to arrive at the gate a bit early and see the airline staff. They sometimes have to go through the visa requirements again, verify the documents and put a “Docs OK” stamp on your boarding pass.

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the day of travel.

If you are applying for the visa ON ARRIVAL, fill out the tourist visa application online prior to arrival in Nepal. Carry a copy of the submission receipt and a passport photo with you.

When you enter the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, follow the below steps

  • Grab and fill out the arrival card
  • If you haven’t submitted the tourist visa application online already, fill it out at one of the immigration kiosks
  • Pay the visa fee according to the number of days you are planning on staying in Nepal
  • Go through the immigration and customs
  • Claim your baggage

Prepaid taxis at the Tribhuvan International Airport are a bit expensive. If you prefer to catch a cheaper taxi, exit the airport and walk towards the front of the taxi line. You will see a few taxis at the front that are not prepaid and you can negotiate the fare. You can get a taxi to Thamel for 500 NPR.

You will have to go through passport control on exit. You will also need to fill out a departure card for foreigners. This card is the same for all including Indian nationals.

You might be asked how long were you in Nepal and what was your purpose. Exit formalities take about 10-15 minutes at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

You may have to go through immigration and customs on your return to your home country or the country you are flying back to. If you are flying back on an Airbus A330/A340/A380 or Boeing 747/777, expect long lines at the immigration and customs.

How to Apply for a Nepal Tourist Visa from India

A tourist visa must be  obtained in advance of your journey if you’re thinking about  visiting Nepal. You will learn all  you require to know  about the visa criteria from how to apply to  the costs and length of the visa in this  guide.

Nepal Tourist Visa

You will  require a Nepal tourist visa if you’re an Indian national planning a vacation  to Nepal. The good  news is that this visa is simple to get  online or while arriving at the airport  in Kathmandu. You can  enter and exit Nepal as many times as you like throughout the 90-day stay period allowed by  the Nepal visa. A tourist  visa for Nepal is simple to get and may  be picked up within a few days after  application. It’s recommended to  apply well in advance of your trip because the visa  application procedure may take longer during busy tourist  seasons.

The steps involved in applying for a Nepal visit visa from India Explore Nepal today with Go Kite’s easy visit visa process

Step-1 types of tourist visas available.

Depending on your visit’s  objectives and length, Nepal offers a number of different types  of tourist visas. The most typical form  permits you to stay in Nepal for up to 90 days and is called a single-entry tourist  visa. There is also  a  visa that permits numerous  entries and exits from Nepal within a predetermined time  frame. Additionally, special visas are  accessible to students, volunteers, and business  visitors. Before  applying, it’s critical to ascertain which visa  category best suits your individual travel  requirements.

Step-2 Required documents for the visa application

Depending on the  purpose and duration of your stay, Nepal offers  numerous types of tourist visas. The single-entry tourist visa, which  permits you to remain in Nepal for up to 90 days, is the most prevalent  form. There is also a multiple-entry tourist visa that  permits you to enter and depart Nepal many times within a certain time  frame. Special visas are also  available for volunteers, students, and business  travelers. Before applying, you should establish which  sort of visa is suitable for your individual trip  plans.

Step-3 Visa application process and fees

The Nepal visa  application procedure usually entails submitting your  application and accompanying papers to the Nepalese embassy or  consulate in your place of  origin. You may also be able to  apply online on the website of the Nepalese Department of  Immigration. The cost of a visa varies  according on the length of your stay and the type  of visa you  want. It is critical to understand  that visa payments are non-refundable, even if your application is  refused. Before submitting your  application, be sure you check the most recent costs and application  processes.

Step-4 Duration of stay and visa extension options

The length of your  stay in Nepal will be determined by the type of visa you  get. Tourist visas are  often granted for periods of 15, 30, or 90 days. If you  want to remain longer than the period of your visa, you can ask for  an extension at the Immigration Department in Kathmandu  or Pokhara. Extensions are  often given in 15-day increments, with a maximum of 150 days permitted in a calendar  year. Overstaying your visa may  result in penalties, deportation, or possibly  a prohibition from returning to Nepal in the  future.

Step-5 Important tips for a smooth visa application process

If you have all of the  essential documents and information, applying  for a tourist visa to Nepal may be a simple  procedure. Make sure to  include a valid passport with at least six months  remaining validity, a current passport-sized photo, and evidence of onward  travel. It’s also critical to  prepare enough money for the visa cost, which varies depending on the length of your  stay. You can save time and  money by applying for a visa online or at a Nepalese embassy or consulate in your home  country. To minimize  delays or problems, double-check all of the information on your application before submitting  it.

Let’s Learn a Bit More About Nepal

Nepal is a country located in South Asia. It is bordered by India to the south, east, and west, and by China to the north. Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal. Nepal has a diverse geography, ranging from the lowlands of the Terai region to the Himalayas in the north, including Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. The country is home to a rich cultural heritage, with a blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Nepali is the official language, but there are over 100 different languages spoken in the country. Nepal is home to many popular trekking and mountaineering destinations. Indian nationals do not require a tourist visa to enter Nepal. Indian citizens can enter Nepal without a visa and stay as long as they wish. However, they will need to carry a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a passport, driving license, or voter ID card, for identification purposes. A Nepal tourist visa from India is not a must for Indian nationals to visit the nation as of now, however it is important to check the guidelines prior to your travel as the requirements might change as and when required.

Reasons to visit Nepal

Diverse culture.

More than 35 different ethnic groups call Nepal home, each with its own language, beliefs, festivals, and artistic style. For instance, the Newar people, who were the first to settle in the Kathmandu Valley, still speak Newari, also known as Nepali Bhasa, and they still celebrate their own holidays, such as Swanti, a lavish five-day festival that emphasises the importance of women in the home. You have a wonderful opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and become fully immersed in Nepal’s unique cultures by travelling there.

Incredible heritage sites

Kathmandu Valley and Lumbini, two fascinating UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites, are just two reasons why art, history, and architecture buffs should visit Nepal. A visit to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, can also be a delightful and enlightening experience. Kathmandu Valley is home to many mediaeval temples, beautiful Buddhist monasteries, and stupas.

Friendliest people

Nepalis are incredibly friendly and welcoming. They always work to make you feel at home and consider visitors to be God. They consistently offer you tea and assistance when you ask for it. A friend who has been to Nepal before can attest to the friendliness of the Nepali people. That there is a proverb to the effect that although you come to Nepal for the mountains, you stay for the people shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Savour Nepali delicacies

Nepal’s geographic and cultural diversity contribute to its abundance of food. The cuisine of Nepal still has its own distinctiveness despite being heavily influenced by its neighbours, China and India. The national dish of Nepal, dal bhat (lentils with rice and curried vegetables), is available at almost every eatery and is eaten for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The popular snack known as momo, or Nepalese dumplings, can be found on nearly every street corner and is well worth trying several times. It can be filled with a wide range of vegetables and meat and is typically served with a tomato-based sauce. Chatamari, aloo tama,  dheedo, and other well-known Nepali dishes are also a great treat.

Enjoy top adventures

On a map of the world, Nepal might appear small, only slightly larger than Arkansas in the United States, but due to its incredibly diverse topography, which includes the world’s highest mountain (Mt. Everest) and the world’s deepest gorge (Kali Gandaki Gorge), it can be a haven for adventure seekers. Nepal is known for mountain trekking because it is home to eight of the 10 highest mountains on the planet. Some of the most popular trekking locations include Langtang, Manaslu, Annapurna Base Camp, and Mustang. Along with trekking, you can engage in a variety of thrilling activities, such as hot air ballooning, paragliding, snow skiing, bungee jumping, mountain biking, rock climbing, water rafting, and sky diving.

See amazing wildlife

Wildlife enthusiasts should visit Nepal, where the most well-known park is the UNESCO-designated Chitwan National Park. A variety of animals, including Royal Bengal tigers, wild elephants, deer, monkeys, one-horned rhinos, crocodiles, leopards, sloth bears, and up to 544 species of birds, can be seen in the lowlands. Visitors can anticipate seeing red pandas, blue sheep, snow leopards, and yaks in the highlands.

Get a sense of peace

Nepal is not particularly wealthy, but it is the ideal location for anyone seeking tranquilly. A trip to Nepal itself is an inner peace journey. It offers all the comforts of advanced societies in a charming, laid-back atmosphere. The serenity of the countryside can easily mesmerise you, but even a leisurely stroll through Kathmandu’s Thamel neighbourhood provides some relief. Pokhara, a city by a lake, is a great place to relax where you can breathe clean air, look at the tranquil lake, or take in the alluring snow-capped mountains.

Get great value for your money

Lonely Planet ranked Nepal as the best value destination, making it a great option for travellers on a tight budget. There is plenty of inexpensive lodging, and the majority of restaurants have fair prices. When compared to the Kilimanjaro or Inca Trails, treks offer similar value for money.

Top places to visit in Nepal

Nepal’s cultural capital, Kathmandu, is home to more than a million people. It is a bustling metropolis filled with tourist shops, trekking outfitters, lodging facilities, dining establishments, temples, and artisan studios. Although the Durbar Square is still being restored, there are still many intact sites that are interesting to explore. A historic Buddhist complex with panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley is called Swayambhunath. The Swapna Bagaicha is a peaceful location to get away from Kathmandu’s bustle.

Annapurna Circuit

In northwest Nepal, the Annapurna Circuit offers hikers an unparalleled outdoor adventure. It takes travellers through lush subtropical valleys dotted with terraced farms, high into the Himalayas, across precipitous gorges, over desert plateaus, and through. Even though many hikers fly out of Jomsom Airport after walking half the distance, the journey takes about three weeks to complete. One of the best-known treks in Nepal, the shorter Annapurna Sanctuary Trek takes 8 to 12 days and features lodges and tea stops every hour.

Beautifully preserved Bhaktapur, one of three ancient capitals in the Kathmandu Valley, sustained some damage as a result of the 2015 earthquakes. The majority of the city’s temples and shrines, which are its main draws and are known as the City of Devotees, fortunately avoided damage. Bhaktapur invites leisurely strolls through mediaeval squares, winding streets, and pedestrian-only thoroughfares because it is less congested and hectic than bustling Kathmandu. The National Art Gallery is housed in the 55-Window Palace, a 15th-century building located in the city’s Durbar Square, also known as the “noble court.”

Patan, which is located across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu, is renowned for both its artisans and its breathtaking example of Newari architecture. The palaces, courtyards, and temples of the Patan Durbar, which were constructed in the 17th century, are the city’s top sights. The recently restored stone Krishna Temple, with its multi-columned façade and gilded spires, is particularly striking, as is the recently restored Sundari Chowk, a courtyard with an intricately carved sunken bath as its focal point. One of the best places in Nepal to purchase the exquisite handmade silk saris that were once the preferred clothing for the nation’s royalty and aristocracy is Patan.

Pokhara is a well-liked vacation spot for visitors from all over the world because of its serene lakes, verdant shorelines, and mountain views. The lakeside city, which is known as the entrance to the Annapurna region in northwest Nepal, offers rest to weary hikers as well as opportunities for outdoor adventures, including leisurely paddleboat rides and white-water rafting. Phewa Lake, the biggest of Pokhara’s three lakes, is surrounded by opulent hotels, eateries, bars, and shops. A temple honouring the goddess Barahi Bhagwati is located on an island in the lake, where rituals are performed almost every weekend.

Chitwan National Park

The Bengal tiger and one-horned rhinoceros find much-needed refuge in the Chitwan National Park in south-central Nepal, one of the best places in Asia to see wildlife. The chance to interact closely with exotic animals like elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards, Indian bison, and sloth bears is the park’s main draw. Visitors can explore the park on jungle treks, elephant rides, and canoe rides, in addition to jeep tours. The park’s edge offers upscale lodging, and the nearby village of Sauraha has more affordable lodging options.

The Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar and the Tengboche Monastery, both of which provide cosy lodging with breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, are located in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal. The route leads to Everest Base Camp and starts at the Lukla airstrip. Most expeditions begin in the Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar, and the Tengboche Monastery provides cosy lodging with breathtaking views.

Travellers who want to experience the splendour and majesty of the Himalayas without engaging in any physical activity frequently visit Nagarkot. Northeast of Bhaktapur, on a high ridge, it provides views of eight Himalayan mountain ranges. There are hotels in Nagarkot for every budget, and many of them are close to the Nagarkot View Tower, which is regarded as the best location in Nepal to see the sun rise over the Himalayas.

On the Terai plains in southern-central Nepal, is the city of Janakpur. The Maithili culture is still thriving where Mithila’s capital once stood. Thousands of Hindus visit the Janaki Mandir temple every year to commemorate the wedding anniversary of Lord Ram and Sita, who they believe were married in Janakpur. The city of Kathmandu is renowned for its more than 100 holy pools and ponds, and the 19th-century marble structure is the largest temple there.

The traditional birthplace of Lord Buddha is Lumbini, where artefacts from 550 B.C. have been discovered. Maya Devi, the mother of Buddha, resides there as well. She was born there, close to a tree in the garden. Monasteries, holy ponds, meditation facilities, and cultural establishments are all part of the complex.

After crossing nepal border,we do not want to run car but want to park for 4 days. Question is can we do this then where and what will be parking fee

' src=

Hi Narinder Pal Singh, thank you for your comment. I’m not sure which border you are referring to, but personally, I find it difficult to locate parking spots online in Nepal. In such situations, I usually prefer to drive straight until I come across a mall, as they usually have parking lots available. Additionally, I would also ask locals for recommendations on safe overnight parking areas. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Nepal Visa for Indians – Here is All The Information You Need

Nepal, also known as the "Roof of the World", is a coastal country in South Asia. It is mostly located in the Himalayas, with a small portion in the Indo-Gangetic plains. It is an untouched beautiful place, officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Nepal is one of the most sought-after travel destinations due to its snow-capped mountain peaks, pristine rivers, and lush scenery. This mountainous region is also well-known for its trekking opportunities. Pilgrimage is another aspect of Nepal that attracts tourists, with numerous Buddhist and Hindu temples to take a trip.

Nepal, which borders India, is one of the top tourist attractions near India. For a variety of reasons, Indians frequently choose Nepal as their vacation spot. While it is located abroad, it is one of India's closest neighbours. Furthermore, vacations in Nepal are extremely pocket-friendly, which is one of the primary reasons why the country is a popular choice for Indian tourists.

With many Indians planning to visit Nepal, it is extremely crucial that applicable visa requirements are thoroughly understood before venturing on a vacation. Furthermore, because Nepal's immigration rules differ from those of other countries, it is extremely important to have a good understanding of them.

Here are the details of the Nepal visa for Indians.

Nepal Visa for Indians

It is always a good thing to be able to travel to a different country without having to worry about Visa procedures. Fortunately, Nepal is one of the visa free countries for Indians . As a result, you can visit this nation without worrying about visa issues. So if you're an Indian national travelling to Nepal by air, all you need to bring with you and produce is one of the following two forms of identification:

  • Election Commission Card (Voter's ID Card)

Is a Visa Required for Indians to Visit Nepal?

No, Indian citizens do not need a visa for entering Nepal. It is worth noting that citizens of the majority of other countries require a visa to enter Nepal. This exception is only available to Indian citizens. Indians, on the other hand, are expected to carry proper documents required to visit Nepal for Indians.

Is it possible for Indians to obtain a visa on arrival or an e-visa in Nepal?

No, because Indian travellers do not need a visa to visit Nepal, the need for such a visa on arrival or E-visa is no longer necessary. Indians can easily travel to Nepal with their passports or other relevant documents to gain entry to the country, whether at the immigration center at Kathmandu International Airport or elsewhere.

Is it necessary to purchase Nepal Travel Insurance?

Nepal immigration rules for Indians do not require them to have a travel insurance policy in place in order to enter the country. Those travelling overseas for trekking, on the other hand, must purchase a travel insurance policy. These policies usually cover medical expenses up to and including hospitalization charges, even if the injury occurred while participating in an adventure sport. These plans typically cover the loss of luggage as well as the application for lost passports. A travel insurance policy not only assists in financially coping with unexpected expenses that may arise while travelling to Nepal; it also helps in providing immediate assistance during an emergency.

Do Indian visitors to Nepal need to have a passport?

Yes, valid passports are required for Indians travelling to Nepal. Tourists from India who do not have a passport for Nepal can enter the country with the help of a few other documents like a visa for Nepal.

Documents Required to Enter Nepal for Indian Citizens

The following are the documents required to visit Nepal for Indians:

  • While Nepal visa requirements for Indian citizens are unnecessary, the following documents must be carried by Indians in order to gain entry.
  • Any photo-identification document issued by Central/State/UT authorities.
  • The Election Commission of India issues voter identification cards.
  • The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued an emergency certificate.
  • The following Nepal entrance requirements for Indian citizens should also be taken into consideration.
  • Indians over the age of 65 or under the age of 15 can enter Nepal by presenting photo-identity proof such as a PAN card, driving license, ration card, etc.
  • Indians between the ages of 15 and 18 can enter Nepal with an Identity Certificate issued by their academic institution's principal.

What Documents Are Necessary If You Enter by Road?

Indian citizens allowed to enter Nepal by road with their own vehicle must present the following documents at the Nepal border, in addition to their proof of citizenship:

  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Driving License
  • A Yaatayaat Anumati a vehicle permit
  • A Bhansar, also known as a customs permit

How to Reach Nepal

Here are some different ways to reach Nepal:

Nepal is well-connected by air, thanks to its airport in Kathmandu, the country's capital. Tribhuvan International Airport serves as the primary entry point into the country for visitors arriving by air. Air Arabia,  Jet Airways, Air Asia X, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airlines, Air China, Fly Dubai, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Airlines, Silk Air, and Thai Air are the main flight operator.  There are flights to various destinations around the world, including India, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Kuala Lumpur.

Passengers and freight trains run between Sirsiya in southern Nepal and Raxaul in India. Only Indian citizens are permitted to use this line to cross borders by rail.

To make the journey to Nepal from India by road, take a bus that connects different points between the two countries, such as the Sunauli-Bhairawa border checkpoint from Varanasi, the Raxaul-Birgunj crossing from Patna, Kolkata, the Siliguri-Kakarbhitta crossing from Darjeeling, the Banbasa-Mahendranagar passing from Delhi, and the Bahraich-Nepalgunj crossing from Lucknow. You can also rent a car or cab from a location near the border in India. You must pay a toll of NPR 120 and a transport permit of NPR 50.

Best Time to Visit Nepal

Nepal

The best time to visit Nepal is linked to the type of experiences you want to have. The months of late September to late November are ideal for visiting Nepal. This is the most popular time to visit the country. Trekkers from all over the world flock to the Foothills of the Himalayas and mountains during the autumn months. The trails are clear, and the sky has been washed clean by the monsoon that has just passed. Visiting Nepal during this time will also allow you to witness three of the country's major festivals, Dashain, Tihaar, and Mani Rimdu.

The spring season, which lasts from the end of February to the end of April, is the second-best time to visit Nepal. The surroundings become lush and colourful, but the sky becomes hazy. Though the pathways are busy at this time, it is still a nice time to trek and relish the breathtaking views of the valley. The weather is also conducive to sightseeing. If you visit during this time of year, make a point of visiting Chitwan National Park in the Terai region. With greenery terrain and wildlife, it truly becomes a perfect destination.

The winter season, which lasts from December to February, is one of Nepal's other seasons. Summer lasts from May to September. Nepal's must-see destinations include Kathmandu, Pokhara, Nagarkot, Janakpur, and Lumbini.

Now that you know how easy it is to get to Nepal and that a visa isn’t required for Indians, there's no reason not to visit this captivating paradise. Book a Nepal tour package and enjoy with your family, friends, or partner as soon as possible to explore this hillside destination with them.

India-Nepal Border Entry Experience

I have crossed India-Nepal Border at four different locations over my Road Trips to Nepal from India on a motorbike. Each time it was a unique experience to cross the border. At the Indo-Nepal border, some entry points have less hassle than others. Here in this post, you will find detailed information that you may need to travel to Nepal from India by road, in your vehicle.

There are over 20 major and minor border crossings between India and Nepal. Not all border crossings can be used to enter Nepal on an India-registered private bike or car . Some of the crossings are only for cargo vehicles. The official name for these India to Nepal border crossings is Integrated Check Posts (ICP). Integrated Check Posts process cargo, customs as well as immigration from different countries.

In this article, I am mentioning only the important Check Posts where you can enter Nepal from India after getting a ‘bhansar’ permit. You can find a list of all major and minor Border Entry Points from India to Nepal here .

What is a Bhansar permit?

Bhansar is like a visa for vehicles to enter Nepal. To cross the border from India to Nepal on your vehicle like a motorcycle or car you will need a permit called Bhansar. Bhansar refers to the official name for the permit required for a private vehicle to legally enter Nepal. The form to be filled contains details like the registration number of the motorcycle/car/vehicle, duration of stay in Nepal, engine capacity, and your details.

How to get Bhansar Permit?

The word, ‘Bhansar’ literally translates to ‘custom duty’ in the Nepali language. Once you reach the Border Check Post just walk to the Bhansar Counter and tell them that you need to apply for ‘Bhansar’. At some Bhansar Office, the official will fill the form for you after checking relevant documents. But at some crossings, they will ask you to fill yourself. There will be a few middlemen or agents who may approach you to help in return for some money. Since the forms to be filled are in the Nepali language, they take advantage of the situation. Do not overpay them and negotiate. In any case, they should not charge anything more than INR 150. Most of the border bhansar offices, now issue digital Bhansar permit copy which is easy to read as you can see below.

Best Border-Crossing and Entry Point between India and Nepal

The best crossing between India and Nepal is the one closest to your location. However, the experience will be slightly different at various border crossings. I had a smooth experience at the Bhittamore-Jaleshwor border crossing while having to pay middlemen to fill out the form at the Raxaul-Birgunj border. Avoid the Raxaul-Birgunj border crossing as it is a major crossing and there is a kilometers-long queue of trucks and heavy vehicles waiting to get customs clearance. This often leads to long traffic jams on dusty border roads. The roads are pathetic at their best. In contrast, the Bhittamore-Jaleshwor crossing is only for lighter vehicles and there’s no waiting. The officials filled the form themselves and there were no middlemen.

Documents Required for Bhansar – Entering Nepal by Bike or Car

Indians don’t need a visa or passport to enter Nepal. However, if you are traveling on your motorcycle or car then you need to apply for the Bhansar permit for your vehicle. Carry the original copy of the following documents to get Bhansar Permit:

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate – RC
  • Vehicle Insurance Paper in Original with Stamp – Insurance
  • Driving Licence – DL
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate – PUC
  • Any Government Approved ID card like Passport, Voter ID, or Aadhar Card

Always carry more than one ID card as sometimes Aadhar or PAN card is not accepted as valid proof of citizenship. Once the official rejected my vehicle Insurance paper as it did not have a physical stamp on it as it was a digital copy. It took a lot of requests to make him understand that it was a valid original copy and that insurance papers are now issued online. Digital copies don’t come with physical stamps. Now, I make sure that I get my Insurance locally and paper stamped by the insurance company.

Fees/Charges/Price for Bhansar Permit

The price for Bhansar Permit is INR 93 or NPR 150 per day for Motorcycles and INR 312 per day or NPR 500 per day for Cars .

The payment for Bhansar can be done in Indian currency. The forms are available for free but at some places, the official may ask you to pay a small amount. At some entry points, the official may ask the Bhansar Price to be paid in Nepalese currency and then charge you some extra money for it. Do not give in to the corrupt demands and officials will accept the Indian currency.

Extension and Penalty for Bhansar Permit

Keep a day or two extra in your hands in case you are not sure that you will return on time. The road condition in remote areas is perilous and regular roadblocks occur due to landslides. There is a heavy penalty if you keep the vehicle in Nepal even after the expiry of Bhansar. In case of unforeseen circumstances contact the nearest Nepalese Customs Office (Bhansar) for an extension of the period of the ‘Pass’. In Kathmandu, the extension of the pass can be done at the Nepal Customs office at the Tribhuvan International Airport Cargo complex. You do not need to come to the border and re-enter Nepal to get a Bhansar extension. Any vehicle which is found without a valid Bhansar will be confiscated permanently.

30 day rule Bhansar permit at Nepal border

Indian registered vehicles are allowed to stay in Nepal for a total of 30 days only in a calendar year and cannot stay in Nepal for more than 30 days in all in a year, even on payment of charges. A maximum of 14 days of Bhansar permit is issued at once. For the extension of Bhansar, you must come back to the border or customs office in Kathmandu.

The police officials inspect vehicles and documents in many places and you must present all the documents along with Bhansar when demanded. Keep the documents in a waterproof bag or travel pouch.

Thanks you for the detailed information on obtaining bike permit to enter Nepal. How much time it takes for the bhansar paperwork at the border?

' src=

If there’s no queue then it will only take 5 minutes for the official to verify the documents and give the bhansar permit. However, at some border crossings where there is a long queue like the Raxaul border, it may take around an hour. Sometimes officials knowingly delay to force you to bribe some money. Customs may check your bags for prohibited substances but in most cases they just let the bikers go.

' src=

What’s the maximum number of days for bhansar permit?

You may apply for up to 30 days of Bhansar permit. However, be aware that you won’t be eligible to get permit for that vehicle again at any point in time that year. India registered vehicles can only stay in Nepal for a total of 30 days in a calendar year.

Thanks for the bhanwar permit post. Very informative and helpful.

Bhai only aadhar ho to chal jaye ga agar public transport se gye ho aur entery k time pr kya kya dikhana pde ga

If you are using public transport or crossing the border by walking across then only Aadhar Card or Voter ID or any other government ID need to be shown at Border Checkpost. No other documents are required. Just carry a photocopy of the Vaccination certificate downloaded from COWIN app.

(Public transport se border cross karne par ya paidal cross karne pe Sirf ek koi bhi government approved ID card + Vaccination certificate chahiye aur kuch nahi)

Yes. You only need to have a proper registration card and other documents. No problem if the bike is not in your name. Carry an authorization letter. If it is notarized then it’s an added benefit.

Do we also need vehicle permit (yatayat anumati patra) along with the Bhansar as well?

No. Only carry valid documents as mentioned above.

Thanks for the detailed information much appreciated ! What about driving…do we need International licence/permit and how’s the driving experience.

You don’t need international driving licence or special permit to drive in Nepal. Just carry original Indian Driving Licence card.

Driving in Nepal is just like driving in India but on steep roads in mountains with lesser traffic.

No problem. Carry a “Letter of Authorisation” allowing you to use his motorcycle, written and signed by original owner with his driving licence, Registration certificate and ID card photocopy. In most cases they don’t bother to ask and it’s okay.

You recommended the Bhitthamore-Jaleshwor border crossing. How is the condition of the roads connecting to nearest city/town on both sides India and Nepal? I’m from North Bengal so I’ve always and only used the Panitanki-Kakarvita entry. Just want to try something new. Thanks.

Road Conditions are better than most entry points at Bhitthamore. It’s pitched all the way upto the borders on both sides. May find some patches potholes but nothing too bad to drive. Also very less crowded and easy to cross over.

' src=

Any prior permit is required from Indian RTO for entry of cars? Also Indian Insurance of car valid in Nepal?

No prior permit required from RTO. Indian insurance valid only to get Bhansar permit to enter Nepal. ( If something happens you can’t claim the insurance as it’s not international insurance.) Carry Pollution (PUC), Indian vehicle Insurance paper, Registration paper/card and Driving licence. That’s all you need.

I want to enter Nepal to visit Janakpur from Pipraun in my car . Is there rush at the border normally and what is the condition of roads from Pipraun to Janakpur. Thanks.

Road at Pipraun border area is dusty but improves towards Janakpur. There is no rush at this border.

Sir can I enter through Pipraun and exit from Jaleshwar as I want to visit Sitamarhi after Janakpur. Also till what time can we enter or exit the border in the evening.

You can enter and exit from different border checkpoints. Not a problem. All Bhansar permit offices are open between 10 AM to 5 PM.

Planning to enter Nepal at Banbasa border with my company owned 4 wheeler. Q1: Any additional document required if RC is in name of company? Q2: Opening & closing time of Immigration offices (India & Nepal) and Bhansara permit office at Banbasa-Mahendranagar border.

Immigration offices have no importance except when you are driving a truck into or out of Nepal. 1) If you have an official ID card of your company then just carry it along with all the vehicle documents. There should be no problem in any case as often tourist vehicles with third party drivers enter Nepal. 2) Bhansar office timings are 10am to 5pm when the Bhansar permit is issued.

I entered Nepal a week ago and all the process has become digitally printed and no handwritten Bhansar anymore. Will update article.

Thanks for your swift reply. While surfing internet, I got to know that Banbasa bridge these days opens for traffic/crossing border (for four wheelers) for 7 hrs. at specific timings (2 hrs. duration each) in a day. Is this correct? If so, pls guide with the timings. Also, do I need to carry copy of my ‘fully vaccinated’ Covid-19 certificate to enter into Nepal?

Regarding Banbasa bridge opening time am not sure as I have never crossed through that route. However I see as it’s a sensitive Dam area so as per security protocol there may be fixed timings. In any case it should remain open during day time. No COVID vacc certificate required and nobody will ask you anywhere. However it would be wise to keep a digital copy ready in phone.

Is virtuall RC valid for bhansar?

No. You must carry original RC of vehicle along with original DL.

Hi i have made my entire trip basis your blogs! Thanks for the inspiration!

I have a few queries soliciting your inputs to make my trip safer and enjoyable

1. My insurance is digital, will a print work? Any work around? 2. I plan to enter Sanouli around 9:00am will the offices be open for Binsar or can i get it further inland (on the way to Pokhara?) 3. Is Pokhara possible in 1 day if i start from Gorakhpur at 7:00? 4. Can an Avenger 220Cruise do the Muktinath trip [I have a pillion too]? 5. Is carrying a petrol can needed for Muktinath trip or are there bunks in intervals? 6. How safe is it to park bikes in towns like tatopani/muktinath and go for 3-4 days of trekking? 7. Apart from Muktinath & Everest View treks (which you posted) are there other bike routes explorable with himalayan views? 8. Did you find black ice on your trip?

Thanks a ton!

Glad that the blog helped you.

1) Digital Printout is accepted. Take a color printout. (I was once duped by middleman saying that the insurance copy need to have stamp.) 2) Bhansar office usually opens at 9.30-10.00am so it will be okay to reach there around 9am. 3) It all depends on your driving skills and endurance. I have done the Pokhara route in one day but it’s very tiring. However my route was from Muzaffarpur-Raxaul-Birgung-Hetauda-Bharatpur-Pokhara (387km for 10 hours). You will do Gorakhpur-Sunauli-Tansen-Waling-Pokhara (285km for 9 hours). It is obvious that your route is slower because of bad mountain roads leading to Pokhara. So yes you can do in one day but will reach Pokhara at dark. 4) Power-wise Your 220 is more than enough even with a pillion. Roads are dusty and Rocky from Pokhara to Lete and Jomsom area. But it can surely be done. I did with a pillion on Fazer 150cc in 2016-17. However it took around 12-14 hours of riding in two days. There’s a video of my Muktinath blogpost. Muktinath is an absolute adventure route. Roads and infrastructure have improved much now. Don’t forget to get Annapurna area Permit at Pokhara itself otherwise gaurds will charge extra when done at the spot in Jomsom entry area. 5. Petrol carrying is not needed. Just make sure to make tank full at every petrol station you find after Pokhara. I did not carry extra and I was fine. In case of emergency you can buy from local shops. There are some stretches of 15-20 km (2-3 hours) in remote areas without visible human population. However you will find many vehicles running on the route. 6. It is absolutely safe to park your bike anywhere in remote area. Just make sure that you park it in front of someone’s house or any small lodge after taking permission and informing them. I once parked my bike at small family run canteen in Phaplu and paid them Nepali Rs 200 for 4 days to look after it (while taking flight to Lukla and trekking to see Mt Everest. Returned on helicopter and bike was safe.) Carry a bike cover. It helps in hiding unwarranted attention. 7. Muktinath and Everest route is most popular for big mountain views. However there are places like Tangting in Lamjung Kaski area & Humla, Deuda, Tribeni Patan) in farwest Nepal which are less explored but absolute paradise. Some of these areas in farwest Nepal may need a day or two of trekking after parking the vehicle.. 8. I went to Muktinath in December last week. There were many areas after Jomsom with black ice but it was only for 10-15 meters at most. I had same experience of small patches of black ice in Everest route. Nothing problematic. January and February are snowy and it will get slushy. October November December are good time.

Wish you a safe and happy journey!!

Hi, Your blog is very informative!! Kudos!

I am planning to travel Nepal from Delhi in the month of November. My plan is to enter via Sonauli boarder and cover Pokhara, Manakamana & Kathmandu via Narayanghat route. Please help me to get some clarity on below queries.

1) How safe it would be to travel by car with family (including kids) in the month of November? 2) Will they allow to issue bhansar (permit) for 15 days at once? 3) How is the road condition for driving with sedar car? Will it be convenient?

Thanks Shekhar, glad it’s helpful.

October – November is prime tourist season in Nepal. Book hotel with good rating in advance!!

1) It is absolutely safe to travel (with kids) anywhere in Nepal except for remote areas. Roads have improved drastically in most routes (Chinese construction companies making 4 lanes on major routes). 2) You can get 2 weeks Bhansar without any issue. Now everything is digital and data is fed into computers. Earlier they used to deny Bhansar for over 10 days (to facilitate bribe??). The only rule is that your Indian vehicle can stay a maximum of 30 days in a Calendar year in Nepal. 3) There should be no issue if you have good driving experience. Small patches of bad roads like any mountain road, that’s all. Pokhara to Kathmandu route is being widened in many parts so it will be dusty. Not an issue in car. The road itself is good. I drove between Pokhara – Hetauda during September last week. My cousin went to Kathmandu driving a Hyundai Eon. So a sedan should do with ease. Carry enough warm clothes and food and emergency meds for kids. In any case help will be around for all problems as it’s a major route.

Thanks for such detail information! Just one more query. Which route would be better option from Sonauli to Pokhara? Palpa or Narayangarh. Thanks!

Hi Motologs,

I’m looking to take 15days Bhansar permit at Sonauli. Are they giving permit for 15day ? In some videos…thy say max 9days only. Please help me with question.

Regards Harish

Hi, If you present itinerary and can convince the officer that you will stick to it then they may issue 14days Bhansar. In any case the maximum number of days that permit can be given varies from case to case and is dealt individually. There is no specific rule.

Be prepared with an alternate plan in case you get only 9 days permit. Either come back at Border and re-enter or shorten your itinerary.

I m planning to enter Nepal through panitanki side in my 4 wheeler and my estimate time of arrival will be around 9 pm at the border. Will I get a pass then or should I wait till next morning??

Bhansar permit is not issued at Night. Wait till next morning.

' src=

Hi Sir, Are the Bhansar permit office open from 10 AM – 5 AM on all 7 days a week? We are planning to drive from Bangalore, but would reach Sonauli crossing only on Saturday/Sunday.

Yes Bhansar permit is given on all days during working hours.

' src=

Hi Sir, I am planning to enter Nepal from Banbasa side in first week of January. What is the scenario at the border considering the current covid situation. Are permits issued for entry? Thanks

No issues with permits. It’s being issued right now.

' src=

Hi, I am from India and I have got posting in Nepal from my company, I want to come there with my car, please give full details.I will come to India only 2 or 3 times in a year,

You can not keep you vehicle in Nepal for over 30 days in a Year. So you will have to arrange a vehicle locally.

Can we carry small stove while crossing India border? Do it get custom Clearence? We are planning road trip from Karnataka.

Hi yes. You can. They don’t check anything for usual tourists..

' src=

Hi, Can the pashupatinagar border be crossed in our India registered vehicle to go from darjeeling to Kathmandu and vice versa. Do they issue bhansar there

Hi, Yes you can cross via Pashupatinath Phatak between Darjeeling and Mirik on your own vehicle after paying for Bhansar permit.

' src=

One thing i dont get.

1. If bhansar is given for maximum 14 then how come, they allow vehicle to stay in their territory for 30 days.

2. If the bhansar has expired, and someone returns after one day of expiration, does he have to pay a fine?

1. It’s cumulative 30 days in one calendar year divided over multiple entries. 2. Yes, there would be heavy fine and in worse case the vehicle may also be impounded if the delay is by several days. Best is to get Bhansar for 2-3 days extra if you are venturing into remote areas.

' src=

Hello, thanks for the Details.. Il be taking my friends bike for nepal trip.. i will have the RC of the bike as well.. what all other documents needed? An NOC is required ? Do they check if the owner of the bike is present or not?

' src=

Hi, I am planning a tourist tour in Nepal of 5 days, arriving from India with my car (4 wheelers with Italian license plate) via the Raxaul border crossing. Prachanda said that during his recent visit to India, he requested his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to resolve all outstanding issues including those concerning the border at the earliest and the Prime Minister had responded positively and agreed to move forward with the matter.

India-Nepal border issue

It is worth recalling that Nepal's government unveiled its new political map with the inclusion of Lipulek, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura areas within its territory in May 2020 during the government led by K P Sharma Oli.

It was later endorsed by Parliament unanimously. After Nepal released the map, India reacted sharply, calling it a "unilateral act" and cautioning Kathmandu that such "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it. India maintains Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to it.

The Nepal government replaced the old map used in all the official documents with the new map despite India’s objection. Nepal shares a border of over 1,850-km with five Indian states – Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Prachanda said that during a meeting with his Indian counterpart in the course of his India visit, an understanding was reached to revise and update the existing treaties and agreements including the 1950 India-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship as well as to resolve border-related issues through the existing diplomatic mechanism.

Nepal sent a letter through diplomatic channel

A letter has been sent to the Indian side through diplomatic channels for the seventh meeting of the Border Working Group related to the Nepal-India Border as per the commitment made in the seventh meeting of the Nepal-India Joint Commission to conclude the works in the remaining section of the Nepal-India border, Prachnda added.

Stating that the border problems that occasionally surfaced between Nepal-China are resolved through bilateral talks and consensus, he said that a consensus was forged during the meeting between the Foreign ministers of Nepal and China in March 2022 to forward activities related to Nepal-China Joint Border Monitoring, through mutual consultation.

ENTRY OF INDIAN REGISTERED VEHICLES IN NEPAL

Indian registered vehicles such as two wheelers, motorcars, vans, jeeps, trucks, tractors, lorries, etc. are allowed to be temporarily imported into Nepal on payment of Customs Duty.

Indian registered vehicles are allowed to stay in Nepal for a total of 30 days only in a calendar year and cannot stay in Nepal for more than 30 days in all in a year, even on payment of charges.

Indian registered vehicles, including two wheelers, can visit the nearest municipal area/market in Nepal for a day long visit without payment of any Customs duty. However, the vehicle owners are required to register their vehicle at the Nepalese border check post and obtain a ‘Day Pass/Challan’.

If any Indian registered vehicle enters Nepal on a ‘Day Pass’, then it must return back to India on the same day and while returning back, the Pass has to be compulsorily returned back to Nepal Customs (Bhansar).

The Indian registered vehicles going beyond the nearest Nepali town or for staying overnight in Nepal are required to register the entry of vehicles for the specific number of days on payment of charges varying from NRs. 100/- to 500/- per day depending on the type of vehicle.

The vehicle owners must ensure that at the time of entering into Nepal, they obtain the pass for correct number of days of their stay in Nepal and pay the charges accordingly.

The vehicles with ‘Pass’ issued for specific duration must exit Nepal before the expiry of the 'Pass' and then it may re-enter Nepal on a new 'Pass', subject to the overall limit of 30 days in a year.

If due to any reason the Indian registered vehicle has to overstay in Nepal, the vehicle owner should immediately approach the nearest Nepalese Customs Office (Bhansar) for extension of period of the 'Pass'. The extension must be sought before the expiry of the existing 'Pass'. In Kathmandu, the extension of pass can be done at Nepal Customs office at Tribhuvan international Airport Cargo complex.

It is important to note that the Pass/Challan issued by the Nepal Customs should be available for inspection all the time by any authority like Police and the Pass should be surrendered to the Nepali Customs at the time of exit from Nepal.

It is important to note Indian registered vehicles caught in Nepalese territory without ‘Pass’ or without valid ‘Pass’ are treated as having been illegally smuggled into Nepal and invite very harsh action from authorities. Such vehicles are seized and confiscated by the authorities and later on auctioned by the Nepal Customs.

Although there exists some provisions for release of Indian registered vehicles on payment of heavy fines in certain circumstances, where the vehicle which has entered into Nepal without getting a pass, or where the ‘Pass’ has got expired, it has been observed that such provisions are very rarely used and in most of the cases Indian registered vehicles are seized.

DISCLAIMER:-

The aforesaid information is only for guidance of owners of the Indian vehicles entering into Nepal and should not be construed as the exact legal position. For detailed information on provisions related import of vehicles into Nepal, latest Nepal Customs Tariff available at www.customs.gov.np may please be referred to.

A British national of Indian origin, Virajit Mungale, drove his SUV from London (UK) to Thane (India), covering 18,300 km over 59 days, to meet his mother. His route spanned 16 countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Russia, China, and India.

Mungale’s adventure was inspired by his fascination with the historic Silk Route and stories of similar journeys.

“I drove approximately 400-600 km per day, occasionally pushing up to 1,000 km, always prioritising safety by avoiding night driving,” said Mungale, reported PTI.

He meticulously arranged permissions and legal clearances from each country and took a two-month leave from his job for the trip.

Accompanied by his Nepalese friend, Roshan Shresta, up to Kathmandu, Nepal, Mungale faced several challenges, including altitude sickness at 5,200 metres and extreme weather conditions.

“The journey was tough with snow and cold, but the experience was worth it,” Mungale shared.

Mungale’s route included the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tibet, Nepal, and finally India.

A father's Everest legacy inspires mountaineer from India

Jamling Tenzing Norgay, son of Sardar Tenzing Norgay

HONG KONG — Some families go to the beach for vacations, others visit big cities. Jamling Tenzing Norgay’s family climbed mountains.

“We went on a trek to some beautiful ridges. That’s what we did all the time, with my father,” said Tenzing, whose father, Tenzing Norgay, was a Nepalese-Indian Sherpa who in 1953 became one of the first two confirmed people to reach the top of Mount Everest along with New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary.

Tenzing’s father instilled a passion for mountaineering in him from a young age.

“I ultimately wanted to try to aspire to climb Everest because I looked up to my father as my greatest role model,” Tenzing, 59, told NBC News in an interview in Hong Kong this month. “He was my hero, and I wanted to become just like him.”

Tenzing achieved his Everest dream in 1996, reaching the top of the 29,032-foot mountain.

Edmund P. Hillary, left, and Sardar Tenzing Norgay

“I trained very hard and trained well, physically and mentally,” he said of his climb, which was documented in the 1998 IMAX film “Everest.” “I prepared for this climb all my life.”

Mount Everest has “changed a great deal” since his father climbed it in 1953, Tenzing said. Equipment has become lighter and more sophisticated, and communication is much easier.

That has made the mountain more accessible, but also much more crowded. In recent years, viral photos have shown long lines of climbers snaking down from the summit.

When there are delays, “that’s when accidents happen,” Tenzing said. “More people are dying on the mountain because of the fact that there are too many people up there.”

Tenzing’s 1996 climb coincided with what was at the time Mount Everest’s deadliest year ever. Twelve climbers died during the spring climbing season, including eight who got caught in a blizzard on the way down.

This year, eight climbers died or went missing , compared with 18 in 2023.

Tenzing and others such as Kami Rita, a Sherpa guide who last month scaled Mount Everest for a record 30th time , have also expressed concern about the mountain’s trash problem. The Nepali army said after concluding its annual cleanup campaign this month that it had removed about 11 tons of garbage, four human corpses and one skeleton from Mount Everest and two other Himalayan peaks.

New rules this year required climbers to pack out their own excrement, which does not fully degrade on the frigid mountain.

That did not dissuade the 421 climbers who were issued permits this year, down from a record 478 in 2023. Those numbers do not include accompanying Sherpa and other support staff.

“People will still keep coming, and I think the number of climbers coming is going to grow in the future, which is not good,” said Tenzing, whose 2002 book “Touching My Father’s Soul” recounted his 1996 Everest ascent and shed light on the Sherpa experience.

A veteran mountaineer, Tenzing has guided climbers with varying levels of experience throughout the Himalayan region on long treks and mountain expeditions. One of the things he enjoys most about it, he said, is telling them about local history and culture, including stories from his father’s historic climb.

“I feel proud to be in my country,” he said, “in a country where people enjoy and they keep coming back.”

CORRECTION (June 19, 2024, 10:30 a.m. ET): A headline on an earlier version of this article misstated the nationality of mountaineer Jamling Tenzing Norgay. He is from India, not Nepal.

Aishwarya Thapa Chhetri is an intern for NBC News based in Hong Kong.
