There are a number of landmark food markets in the heart of Florence where locals have been shopping for generations. A market visit with a foodie guide or passionate home cook offers a unique glimpse into Florentine life. Take a guided market tour of Mercato Centrale or Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio, paired with stops to sample classic street food favorites like lampredotto (stewed beef offal) and, of course, gelato.

Across the Arno River, Florence's bohemian Oltarno neighborhood has long been a hub of the local artisan culture and still has landmark workshops passed down through generations. Browse shops like Pitti Mosaici famously known for its handcrafted mosaics. Make an appointment to visit their historic workshop and watch the detailed mosaics come together in person.

The historic center of Florence lies along the banks of the Arno River. It’s surrounded by lush hills dotted with villages like Fiesole, Bellosguardo, and Settignano. A jaunt to these nearby slopes offers both sweeping views across Florence’s terracotta-tiled roofs and a quiet respite from the crowds of the city center. Set off by e-bike, Vespa scooter, or on foot to take in the views from the San Miniato al Monte overlook and explore the hills that inspired Leonardo da Vinci and others.

Sunsets in Florence are legendary, bathing the city in golden light and tinting the sky with a kaleidoscope of pinks, oranges, and blues. There are a number of great spots to catch this magical spectacle each day, but none more famous than Piazzale Michelangelo, perched above the Oltrarno neighborhood. Alternatively, enjoy the sunset hour from a unique perspective with a sunset boat tour down the Arno River, or pair your sunset stroll with a wine-tasting or foodie crawl in Florence’s old town.

Just beyond the hills that encircle the city, Tuscany’s Chianti wine country beckons with historic family-run cellars that have been producing Chianti Classico and other flagship Italian wines for centuries. Florence is an ideal jumping-off point for a day trip to Chianti filled with winery tours and tastings. You can explore on your own, but a full-day or half-day wine tour with transportation included lets you skip the stress of driving.

There are a number of fashion museums in Florence that highlight some of the top names in haute couture and shoe design. Admire vintage clothing and shoes at Gucci Museum, the Ferragamo Museum, and the Museum of Costume and Fashion in Pitti Palace with a Florence fashion tour or go on a fashion spree of your own with a private shopper. For a wardrobe overhaul that won’t break the bank, visit outlets such as the Barberino Designer Outlet.

Hidden behind the city’s Renaissance palaces lie equally storied gardens which offer a break from Florence’s crowds, just steps from the city’s top sights. Stretch your legs along the gravel walks in the Boboli Gardens, known for its ornate fountains and grottoes and set just behind Pitti Palace, or walk up the terraced grounds of Bardini Gardens behind Fort Belvedere for unrivaled views over the historic center and Brunelleschi’s iconic dome.

Florence is an open-air museum and each square overflows with architecture and art. Get your bearings and make sure you see the most important highlights by exploring the centro storico with a guide. Take in headliners like the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, and the Ponte Vecchio easily on foot in this walkable city, or strike further afield with an e-bike, e-scooter, golf cart, or tuk-tuk to visit the Piazzale Michelangelo scenic overlook for views across the Arno River.

Florence Travel Guide

Florence Cathedral Duomo

Celebrated as the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is the capital of Tuscany and the region’s artistic treasure trove. A maze of cobblestone streets and former palaces, the city’s historic center showcases a time capsule of medieval Italy and is ideal for exploring by foot on a walking tour. Skip-the-line tickets help visitors save time when flocking to world-class museums like the Uffizi Gallery and Accademia Gallery to admire originals by Italian luminaries including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael. A stroll across the Ponte Vecchio provides views of the Arno River and centuries-old jewelry shops, while the Boboli Gardens and the Palazzo Pitti provide a peek into the former home of the powerful Medici family. Food and wine enthusiasts can easily escape to nearby Chianti, San Gimignano, and other countryside hill towns for a day tour filled with bold Italian reds and gourmet Tuscan cuisine. You’ll find all this and more in our Florence travel guide.

Uffizi Gallery

viator tours from florence

Italy’s most-visited museum is an essential stop on any Florence itinerary. Housed in a former Medici palace that’s a work of art in itself, the immense collection features high Renaissance gems like Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus , da Vinci’s The Annunciation , and Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo . Skip-the line tours help visitors avoid long waits that often stretch for hours, while small-group tours led by an art historian help enrich the viewing experience and provide visitors with a focused route through the endless galleries.

Florence’s second-most-popular museum draws major crowds to see one of Europe’s most compelling statues–Michelangelo’s original David . Other highlights include Michelangelo’s unfinished Prisoners series, Renaissance paintings by Botticelli and Ghirlandaio, and rare musical instruments like a Stradivari viola. Like the Uffizi, entrance lines here can be extreme, so skip-the-line tours and tickets offer a great value. Combo tours pair the two museums for a double dose of world-famous art, all in one day.

Florence Duomo

viator tours from florence

No Florence travel guide would be complete without this must-do attraction. The red-roofed Duomo (Dome) that caps the Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiori is the architectural jewel of Florence. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, the Duomo was a marvel of engineering in its day and remains a must-visit attraction for modern visitors. Tickets are required to enter the cathedral and lines are often long, so skip-the-line tours save time. Adventurous travelers can climb the steps to the top for the best views in Florence, while many guided tours include a look at the neighboring bell tower, the Baptistery, and museum.

Florence Travel Guide: Things to Know

When to visit.

Late spring and early fall offer cooler temps and thinner crowds, but visitors during the more popular summer months can take advantage of a wide range of cultural events and festivals. Keep in mind, many businesses shut down for August vacations.

Things to Bring

Sketchbooks come in handy if visitors feel inspired to join legions of art students in capturing Renaissance sculptures in a low-tech way.

Getting Around

While a public bus system can help visitors reach out-of-the-way locations, Florence’s historic city center is primarily made for walking. Bicycle rental and tours offer a convenient way to wind through narrow streets and medieval piazzas in less time.

Local Customs

Churches and other sacred sites may refuse entry to visitors with exposed shoulders, arms, or knees. Travelers should be mindful of photography rules inside museums and palaces.

What the Locals Know

Enjoying an after-dinner gelato in one of the city’s public piazzas is a cherished summer tradition. Legendary ice cream shop Vivoli draws big crowds for a reason, and is walking distance to nearby Piazza Santa Croce.

History of the Duomo Florence

The Basilica Di Santa Maria Del Fiore more commonly known as the Duomo Cathedral of Florence was one of the most important architectural structures in 14th century Florence. It inspired and ushered in a whole new era of art and engineering.

With its spectacular Renaissance dome constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi and the baptistery directly across the street, Florence’s cathedral towers over the city. The huge Gothic cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore was built on the foundations of the 7th-century church of Santa Reparata, the remnants of which may be seen in the crypt.

The Florence Duomo is located in Duomo Square. It was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, a prominent architect, and sculptor who admired the Gothic style, and building began towards the end of the 13th century. Florentine artists abandoned the Gothic style in favor of the Roman style about the middle of the 14th century. The metalsmith Lorenzo Ghiberti and the artist Filippo Brunelleschi were given the honor of completing Florence Cathedral.

After the Cathedral’s facade was demolished towards the end of the sixteenth century, Emilio de Fabris reconstructed it, made minor changes, and used marble of various colors.
