Tanzania and Zanzibar Honeymoon

Our guide to the best of romantic tanzania and zanzibar.

Itinerary photo - Safari

There is no doubt that, when you talk to most people, the subject of safari occurs most often when thinking about a honeymoon. Due to the increased costs involved, as well as the time that it takes to fly around Tanzania, it makes sense that almost 60% of visitors that come are on a luxury Tanzania honeymoon package. With this in mind, and given our experience with Tanzania and Zanzibar honeymoons, we have put together a bit of a check list as well as a few thoughts as to where it is best to take into consideration.

The little extras!

Please also note that, having been putting together luxury Tanzania and Zanzibar honeymoons for over ten years, we have a wealth of experience in making your honeymoon of a lifetime as exceptional as possible. We have preferred rooms in every hotel for our clients, as well as a few little extras on the route to make things just that bit more memorable! The best way for us to get your ideal luxury Tanzania and Zanzibar honeymoon is to have a chat or come in for a presentation! (we do work weekends!!)

Tanzania Honeymoon List

Many of our Tanzania honeymoon clients would like their Tanzania safari to be as special as they can possibly make it. Along with carefully sitting down and working out the perfect honeymoon itinerary for our clients, the subject of budget does come to the fore...and we would like to help! Recently we started to work with a specialist honeymoon list company called " Buy Our Honeymoon ". Unlike many of the honeymoon list companies out there, they work on a single payment process where you pay a one off set up fee of around £30 (discounted for our clients), you can have your own Paypal account for your guests to pay directly in to, and you will also have a fully functioning web page that guests can go to and see your itinerary along with buying any of the options through the site. For further information on this please ask your consultant.

Read more Northern Tanzania safari from June to November - the best priced safari trip to the northern parks in the period. Read more Best of Southern Tanzania - our ultimate trip to the southern parks offering great value and superb game viewing. Give us a call or send us an email to get the ball rolling!

Time of year...

In the main, the dry season months between June and October are ideal for a Tanzania honeymoon safari as you have the benefit of great weather, and also the congregation of the game around the watering holes. For many on a Tanzania honeymoon, they won't have time to be able to sit around waiting for game so this period is ideal.

Outside of this period, it can be a little trickier...but it can also be a lot less busy and also less expensive as the lodges and hotels have less business. Take a look at our Tanzania "when to travel" guide to see when you are looking to go on your honeymoon and where we recommend.

Take a look at: When to go

How long on safari...

For most, a Tanzania honeymoon safari of around 6 nights is the maximum that they will consider, while others prefer just a few nights in the bush and the rest on a beach somewhere.

The reason that this is significant is that, with the simple logistics of the northern parks not allowing for anything less than 4 nights, many looking to go on a Tanzania honeymoon need to look to the southern safari parks of the Selous and Ruaha....unlike the north, which is far busier and more crowded, the southern parks are fly-in, have much smaller properties and offer an altogether more intimate experience. In our view, the southern parks are perfect for a quiet and memorable Tanzania honeymoon.

The budget...

There is no doubt that, in preparing a Tanzania honeymoon, this is the factor that underlies everything. There are certain threshold costs that exist in a honeymoon itinerary. As with the northern parks, there is a certain cost involved in flying around, or staying longer on safari.

However, for those with higher budgets, Tanzania really offers a few of the world's most unbelievable sights and sounds. On top of the famous draws, there are some truly hidden gems that, in a lifetime of exploring, many never get a chance to witness.

Take a look at: Katavi National Park , Mahale National Park , Suggested Itineraries

Where to stay...

Where to stay on your honeymoon can really affect how you come away from the entire experience. More importantly, it is also worth bearing in mind which order you stay in. If you start with the best and move down, then you will be disappointed...if you finish there it will make the entire trip!

One of the reasons that Tanzania is an exceptional destination for safari is, without doubt, that it is also one of the only African countries to be able to offer world class beaches within an hour's flight of some of the world's best safari. Below we have also recommended a few of the top Zanzibar honeymoon spots to take a look at.

In our hotel section, we have highlighted a few lodges that are well worth taking a look at, all offering the best service and little extras throughout to make things extra special! Certainly, it is best to have a chat with one of our consultants through your likes and dislikes and we can then tailor a Tanzania honeymoon directly what will suite you best.

Take a look at: Beho Beho , Sayari Mara Camp , The Ngorongoro Crater Lodge , Kilindi Resort , Mnemba Lodge

The enormous, stampeding herds are impressive, as are the vast amount of predators that live here: over four thousand lions, 225 cheetahs, a thousand leopards, 3500 hyenas and hundreds of wild dogs! And of course, plenty of other beautiful animals, which your guide will be delighted to search for together with you. Are you ready for this?

The famous Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's seven natural wonders. The crater was formed two million years ago when a vast volcano erupted. The fertile lava has created a unique ecosystem, now home to the highest concentration of animals found anywhere in Africa! Once in the crater, thousands of animals such as lions, zebras, buffalos and black rhinos surround you, and the views are astounding – you won’t know where to look! Watch the video of the park here .

The Manyara Best View Lodge near Lake Manyara National Park is the perfect place for a day of rest in between safaris. You can spend the whole day at the infinity pool in the lodge, and enjoy the good service and amazing views. Or you go out and about and discover the many things you can do in the near vicinity - go mountain biking, visit a local market, hike along the Great Rift Valley wall or the lake, or go on a night game drive. The choice is yours!

Today you fly to the spice island of Zanzibar. Our guide picks you up at the airport and takes you to your hotel. Over the next few days, you can discover white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs. Into culture? Then head to Stone Town and dive into the history of this fascinating little town. Food lovers can also visit the spice plantations and discover the diverse flavours of the delicious local cuisine. A tropical paradise awaits you!

Day 8 - 11: Zanzibar

Ultimate paradise is here: gorgeous, tropical Zanzibar! The clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the palm-fringed, white sandy beaches are almost too beautiful to be true. Buy your coconut drink fresh on the beach, spend hours sunbathing or swimming, and taste the delicious Zanzibari food. In the mood for something active? Then explore the beach, ocean, and island through a range of activities ! We highly recommend the Safari Blue Cruise or a tour of Stone Town.

The last day! Depending on your flight time, you can relax on the beach or explore the island just a little bit more. A driver then takes you to Zanzibar International Airport in time for your flight home. Having second thoughts? It's also possible to extend your holiday to another paradise island , such as Mnemba, Pemba, or Mafia!

IN REMOTE NATIONAL PARKS AND AT WHITE SANDY BEACHES

With one-third of Tanzania’s land dedicated to conservation, you can choose from multiple destinations for your honeymoon experience that are all special in their own right, from remote tropical rainforests teeming with butterflies to vast savannahs dotted with Acacia trees. The Zanzibar archipelago has stunning beaches where you can lounge on a sunbed or embark on water sports activities. In Tanzania, you can expect an exceptional safari and beach retreat.

You can visit Tanzania all year round, but there are some important things to consider. Tanzania does not experience summer and winter. Instead, it has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. The main dry season occurs from June to October. Importantly, it is the period with the best weather for a safari and a beach break. However, it is also the busiest time of the year – book early or venture off the beaten track to more secluded areas instead.

Couple and guide at West Kilimanjaro

June to late October Best for great weather and wildlife viewing

Tanzania’s main dry season is the ideal time to plan a honeymoon to Tanzania. The weather is not too hot and there is little to no chance of rain. Additionally, humidity levels are low during the day, making it comfortable. This extended dry period attracts wildlife to water sources and the vegetation is not as dense, allowing for easier wildlife viewing. The short dry season in January and February is also an excellent time to visit Zanzibar, with fantastic diving conditions. Be aware that it can get quite busy in the Northern Circuit parks as well as on Zanzibar during this time. For a more secluded experience, travel during the shoulder or low season or choose less visited parks.

Green Season

March to May Ideal for experiencing parts of popular parks with fewer people

March to May marks the season of the long rains in Tanzania. The South-East Trade Winds are responsible for this phenomenon, carrying moisture from the Indian Ocean inland. The short rains between November and December are typically less predictable. Afternoon rain showers are common during the short rains, but they are unlikely to affect your honeymoon. Both the long and short rainy periods transform Tanzania’s landscapes into lush greenery. While game viewing may not as easy as during the dry season, you will have a more exclusive experience with fewer other visitors.

How to experience your Tanzania honeymoon safari

It’s best to be guided by knowledgeable and skilled Tanzanians in specially adapted 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers. Depending on your budget, you can opt for an intimate group safari, a private safari, or a fly-in safari that takes you to secluded destinations. We have compared a fly-in safari versus a driving safari on our Getting to Tanzania page.

When visiting the national parks in Tanzania, it’s important to note that there are hardly and signs to guide you in the right direction, making navigation quite challenging. Additionally, parks can be quite far apart and driving styles may be unfamiliar. For these reasons, we generally do not recommended to embark on a private self-driving safari.

When deciding on where to go, you have the option of exploring the northern, southern, and western circuits. While parts of the northern circuit may be busy from June to October, the southern and western circuits still offer secluded options.

How to experience your Zanzibar honeymoon

When planning a honeymoon to Tanzania, it is more than convenient to conclude a safari with a visit to the tropical beaches of Zanzibar. This archipelago, situated only 35 km from Tanzania’s coast, comprises over 50 islands and is a captivating semi-autonomous region. Its location has been hotly disputed for centuries, making it an excellent destination for those interested in exploring its rich cultural heritage.

The three main islands, Unguja (commonly known as Zanzibar), Pemba, and Mafia, all have amazing beaches and accommodations. Let one of our country experts assist you in finding the perfect place to stay.

Typically, following a final scrumptious breakfast in the bush, you will board a small plane to Zanzibar. Upon arrival, you will receive a warm welcome and be taken to your beach retreat where you can enjoy the barefoot luxury life.

Whether you want to swim in the Indian Ocean, explore the reef on a boat ride, dive with whale sharks, or simply unwind on pristine white sand, the opportunities are endless.

How to plan your Tanzania honeymoon package

Planning a special event requires attention to both small and large details. You’ve worked hard to ensure that every aspect of your ceremony is perfect, and you deserve to enjoy your honeymoon without worrying about last-minute travel arrangements. That’s why we recommend reaching out to one of our passionate travel experts, who can take care of the hard work for you. Simply provide them with a brief overview or list of your desired honeymoon, and they’ll tailor it specifically to you as a couple. Our experts will be with you every step of the way, from planning to the end of your trip.

What to see and do on romantic getaways in Tanzania

A honeymoon is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some of the most unforgettable experiences of your life, and Tanzania is fortunate enough to offer an abundance of unique and memorable experiences.

A Guided Safari

There are various types of guided safaris, such as group, private, and fly-in safaris, each with its unique features. However, one thing that is consistent across all our safaris is exceptional wildlife viewing.

A Fly-in Safari

For a truly unforgettable honeymoon, consider a fly-in safari. Why spend your precious time driving in a 4×4 between parks when you can fly into remote, beautiful and rarely visited regions of Tanzania? Stay in luxurious accommodations and experience the wonder of Tanzania’s wildlife and secluded landscapes.

A Balloon Safari

The name does not do justice to this experience. Arrive before the break of dawn to climb into a basket and be warmed by the burners. As you rise over the plains you watch the sunrise over Africa. With the burners off you drift silently over incredible landscapes to watch the wildlife below. It is a magical experience.

A Private Bush Supper

A table for two under countless stars and surrounded by only the sounds of nature has to be the most romantic dinner on the planet. Amazing food in the middle of nowhere will also make your tastebuds very happy.

Coastal Experiences

Zanzibar offers a variety of activities such as relaxing, snorkelling on the coral reef via boat, participating in a half-day spice tour, touring conservation areas, exploring the historic Stone Town, and scuba diving.

Tanzania Honeymoon Safaris

Tanzania is the perfect country for a honeymoon safari. The well-established tourism industry is used to catering for all kinds of special occasions, including honeymoons. Service is almost invariably personable, and you’ll be made to feel at home wherever you go. Many lodges have magnificent settings, and are ideal for a romantic holiday. Newlyweds can enjoy active days getting close to nature and seeing wildlife. But there are also romantic touches. Sundowner drinks while watching the deep-red African sunset, candlelit dinners in the bush, or listening to the birds serenading a new day at dawn. I can’t think of a better way to start your married life together than sharing the very special moments a safari always offers.

5 Questions About Tanzania Honeymoon Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

Is a Tanzanian safari suitable for a honeymoon?

“Yes, a Tanzanian safari is most definitely suitable for a honeymoon. A honeymoon doesn’t need to be a specific type of trip. It should be the kind of holiday you want to share with the person you love. Has going on a safari been a longtime dream for you? Why not combine a once-in-a-lifetime trip with one of the most important events of your life, your wedding? Many of the lodges offer rustic luxury with impeccable service and great food; perfect to wind down after a busy day in the bush. A Tanzanian honeymoon safari is easily tagged onto a beach holiday, too (or the other way around). So, if you need some real relaxation after the stressful build-up of the wedding, this can be arranged as well. Great beach add-on destinations in Tanzania for honeymoon couples include Zanzibar Island and lesser-known Mafia and Pemba Islands.”

Which lodges in Tanzania are recommended for a honeymoon?

“All Tanzanian lodges will make an effort to make your honeymoon special, but it’s the smaller and more exclusive lodges that usually go the extra mile, so these are recommended. They already give more personalized service, so making special arrangements for a honeymoon couple is just an extension of what they are used to doing. Tanzanians love to spoil you when you least expect it. Just go with the flow and don’t ask too many questions; you don’t want to uncover an elaborate surprise. Tanzania is a popular honeymoon destination. The African bush, with its raw beauty, is the perfect romantic environment for outdoorsy newlyweds. Many of Africa’s most-stunning lodges are in Tanzania. Some have lavish suites with magnificent views, making them perfect to spend precious time together. Not surprisingly, many Tanzanian safari lodges cater specifically to honeymoon couples. You might be spoiled with a honeymoon suite, a private dinner under the stars, and/or a spa treatment for two.”

Are there special honeymoon packages in Tanzania?

“There are many special honeymoon packages in Tanzania. Operators will put these tours together using their knowledge of the lodges and parks to specifically cater to honeymoon couples. Every lodge is chosen carefully. It might have an amazing view, a special honeymoon suite, an infinity pool, or a private plunge pool. The setting should be romantic and the service personable. You’ll get a lot of private time; maybe a breakfast on your deck or a special candlelit dinner. Most honeymoon packages will combine a safari with some romantic relaxation on one of Zanzibar’s legendary beaches. Here, you can take long walks on the beach, sail in traditional dhows (traditional sailing vessels), and eat lots of seafood and fresh fruit. You can also swim in warm water, and spend time together without the distractions of everyday life.”

How many days are ideal for a Tanzanian honeymoon safari?

“At least 8 to 10 days are ideal for a Tanzanian honeymoon safari. Getting married can be quite hectic. Preparing a wedding involves a long list of decisions: the venue, the cake, the dress, the guest list… When planning a honeymoon, it’s best to leave it all in the capable hands of a reputable operator, and not get too bogged down in the decision-making and choices. A honeymoon should allow you to unwind and spend time together. The Tanzanian parks are perfect for this. Nature has a relaxing influence on people. However, a safari itinerary can be jam-packed. Never try to cram too much into any given day. Make sure you have some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful lodges and surroundings, as well as the game drives. For this reason, it makes sense to ensure you have a few extra days. You’ll be able to have some free time on an 8- to 10-day safari, and longer is even better.”

Will we get some alone time on our honeymoon trip?

“Even though a Tanzanian safari is quite an active holiday, you should definitely get some alone time on a honeymoon. I would recommend booking a private safari. Aside from the fact that you’ll spend more time alone together, your trip will be more flexible too. Most safaris offer the option of daily morning and afternoon game drives, but when you’re based at one lodge for a few days, don’t be shy to skip the odd game drive. The lodges are often in magnificent locations, perhaps overlooking a river or a waterhole. Animals may come past, or there might be small animals like hyrax or monkeys in the lodge grounds. So long as it doesn’t interfere with days when you move between lodges, take the occasional morning off. Sleep in, have a private breakfast, and spend some time together on your balcony.”

This picturesque island is the perfect romantic beach setting for newlyweds with its white sandy beaches, luxury beach resorts, idyllic palm trees and postcard sunsets.

Table of Contents

Why honeymoon in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar island is where every couple will be spoilt for choice with its allure of magic, romance and blissful beauty.

A honeymoon in Zanzibar allows newlyweds to feel like royalty with candlelit dinners, luxury spa resorts, five-star service and immaculate cocktails by the beach overlooking the crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters.

Here guests will not only find secluded beaches and elegant modern villas, but also sundowner dhow cruises, private pools, Arabian-styled beach hotels and incredible local seafood restaurants in the UNESCO world heritage Stone Town, a romantic old quarter in Zanzibar City.

What activities can honeymooners do in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar (Unguja Island) is one of four islands in the Zanzibar Archipelago and enjoying the incredible beaches and surrounding pristine waters are a must. Nungwi Beach is a perfect place for honeymooners, a rustic beach in the quaint village of Nungwi surrounded by palm trees.

The crystal clear waters make it an ideal place for trying scuba diving, snorkelling and other water sports or swim with dolphins at Kizimkazi. Couples can also bathe in the beautiful turquoise waters and sip G&T’s with their toes in the sea.

At Stone Town, the old town’s maze of narrow streets and alleys have attracted adventurous couples for years, and new cosy restaurants and intimate hotels have only added to the quarter’s charm.

The twisting passageways are also home to an increasing number of speciality shops and boutiques, stocking high-quality, made-in-Zanzibar jewellery, clothing and accessories.

Carrying a small amount of Zanzibar currency , the Tanzania Shilling (TZS) is recommended as back-up when paying for items where credit card facilities are unavailable.

High above the streets, rooftop restaurants serve intriguing cocktails and delicious seafood, with glorious sunset views across the palm trees and over the bay.

Those looking for an authentic slice of Africa are in luck as couples can easily add on wildlife safaris to mainland Tanzania to their beach trips, viewing the most incredible large animals including elephants, giraffes, lions and leopards in their natural habitat.

Honeymoon beach and safari tours can be adapted per the honeymoon couple’s preferences and budget, with combinations of luxury lodges, tented camps on raised timber floors to camping in the bush with internal plane transfers between camps and professional tour guides.

Unmissable safari park destinations include:

  • Serengeti National Park
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Selous Game Reserve

Apart from the sea and safari, a Zanzibar honeymoon can also include many other activities.

This can include visits to Cheetah’s Rock conservation centre, Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve, Prison Island or day trips to the other archipelago island charms of Mafia Island, Pamunda Island, Mnemba Island and Jozani forest.

When to go on a honeymoon in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is very pleasant from June to October as these are the cool and dry months of spring. December to February is also perfect as the island is warm and dry, perfect for those incredible sunsets.

Heavy rains tend to fall in Zanzibar from mid-March to late May. Understanding the best time to visit Zanzibar is useful as this can impact flight prices and availability.

Cost of a honeymoon package in Zanzibar?

The price of a Zanzibar honeymoon is difficult to estimate given the cost can depend on so many factors including the selection of accommodation options, flights, transport, meals, duration of stay and more.

A more ‘affordable’ Tanzania honeymoon cost estimate can start from £3,000/$4,050 to £4,000/$5,500 for two people.

A more luxury Tanzania honeymoon cost estimate can start from £11,700/$15,800 for two people with 5-star lodges, transportation and private guides and activities included.

Zanzibar honeymoon locations

Zanzibar honeymoons typically involve spending most time on the main Zanzibar island of  Unguja where guests can dive in the turquoise water, chill on some of the best Zanzibar beaches with their inviting white sand and toast the incredible sunsets.

After a day of adventure or relaxation by the beach, guests can relax in the most incredible luxury accommodation with all mod cons as well as swimming pools and cocktail lounges or take a boat trip to the nearby stunning islands of Pamunda , Pemba island , Chumbe and Unguja Island .

Travellers can fly to Zanzibar via the island’s main airport (ZNZ) for visitors wondering how to get to Zanzibar . ZNZ airport is located 3.1 miles south of Stone Town, the main city on the island and a Zanzibar visa and certain vaccinations may be required to enter the country.

Zanzibar honeymoon lodges

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

A number of honeymoon lodges with excellent reviews have caught our eye. Below, we’ve summarised the top picks couples can choose from:

Baraza Resort & Spa

This stunning hotel, that sits on the east coast of Zanzibar, is infused with Zanzibari and Arabic designs, bringing you back to the era of the Sultans. Located in Paje beach, Baraza Resort & Spa is a 5-star all-inclusive hotel that is particularly adored by honeymooners.

Although there are about 45 rooms, the villas are well located around the manicured gardens, offering a spacious and private feel. Their interior has been hand designed and built to the highest specifications, using marble and dark woods throughout.

As far as luxury accommodation goes in Zanzibar, Kilindi has raised the bar of what is to be expected at the top end of the market. The accommodation at Kilindi is unique, with rounded pavilion suites spread along the hill overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Each pavilion is set on its own tropical garden, and with its own private plunge pool and dedicated butler, privacy is most definitely guaranteed.

Away from your private suite, the main pavilion offers a 25-metre infinity pool overlooking the waters of the Indian Ocean, and a waterfall bar, alfresco dining and a relaxing spa are just a few of the other facilities to make a visit to.

White Sands Villas

The 5-star villas that form White Sands are situated on the eastern coast of Zanzibar and are ideal for couples looking for spacious accommodation in a private retreat.

The villas (a choice of one, two or five bedroom villas), are set amongst tropical gardens and a white sand beach, with access to the communal facilities such as a rooftop lounge, a restaurant, bar, pool and spa.

The villas are the height of luxury – with modern and sleek architecture and the villas features including outdoor staircases, private rooftops and relaxing daybeds.

Boutique Hotel Matlai

Boutique Hotel Matlai is located on the south east coast of Zanzibar hidden amongst beautiful tropical gardens, and when it comes to the level of service and attention to detail, we would argue it is the best on the island!

Without fail, the head chef will ask guests on a daily basis what they would like to eat and where. Lobster on the beach? Not a problem.

On top of their luxury accommodation and open air bathrooms, romantic extras such as candlelit dinners, cocktails on arrival, rose petal decorations, private open-air cinemas and breakfasts in bed are offered to newlyweds in their honeymoon packages which makes a stay even more memorable!

The Z Hotel

In the heart of Nungwi, the Z Hotel has a wide choice of accommodation to choose from, including deluxe sea view rooms, rooftop suites, ocean front cottages and its ‘Kidoti’ villas that sit on a small cliff that overlooks the Indian Ocean.

Honeymoon couples that stay a minimum of 4 nights receive, free of charge, a fresh fruit platter and a bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival, and a lobster dinner for two on any night of their choice.

Extend your stay to 6 nights and the newlyweds will receive an additional 30 minute luxurious couples massage on top.

Book Tanzania Honeymoon Safari With Kilinge Adventures

Arrival at kilimanjaro airport.

Representative of Kilinge Adventures will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and escort you to tonight’s accommodations in Moshi/Arusha. As local Tanzania’s our guides know the country with unrivaled familiarity, so you’ll be in good hands from the moment you land to the moment you leave.

Moshi/Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park

Pick up from Moshi or Arusha and transfer to Lake Manyara National Park. You arrive in time for lunch at the lodge/campsite and after lunch you will be head to the Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon game drive. This national park is one of Tanzania’s most dramatically located wildlife areas, consisting of a massive but shallow soda lake (covering two-thirds of the park), located at the foot of the Great Rift Valley’s western escarpment. The park’s varied habitat attracts a wide variety of animals, including one of Africa’s largest concentrations of elephants, Lake Manyara’s unique tree-climbing lions, as well as large flocks of flamingos attracted by the algae in the lake.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast you will head towards the Serengeti National Park, via the beautiful high lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the highlands behind, you will then descend into the heart of wild Africa – the Serengeti National Park – with its endless plains, rolling into the distance as far as the eye can see. After, you will head again to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source to this area and therefore attracts wildlife well representative of most of the Serengeti’s species. You will arrive in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti national park.

Serengeti Plains

Be one of only a few fortunate people to glide in a Hot Air Balloon over the Serengeti Plains (available at supplementary cost by pre-arrangement). Floating silently above the awakening bush, while spotting wildlife and enjoying the amazing scenery of Africa, across rivers and over numerous small villages.

After the breakfast early in the morning, you will have a game viewing drive along the Sogore River Circuit, which loops into the plains south of the Seronera River, and which is good for possible Lion, Thomson gazelle, topi, ostrich and cheetah sightings. The Visitor Centre close to the Serengeti Seronera Lodge and public campsites is well worth a visit after the morning’s game drive. This nicely designed center offers some interesting wildlife displays as well as a gift shop selling information leaflets and maps of the area. The center also has a shop where cold drinks and snacks can be purchased, as well as a picnic area and information trail up and around a nearby kopje. You will enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch at the center in the shade of the giant acacia trees.

In the afternoon, you will drive along the Kopjes Circuit, which goes anti-clockwise around the Maasai Kopjes, which usually attract a number of lion and some formidably large cobras. Kopjes are weathered granite outcrops, scattered around the plains, most of which are miniature ecosystems, providing shade and drinking water in pools left in the rock after the rains. This makes the kopjes particularly good for spotting wildlife in the dry seasons – including lions, which like to lie in wait for animals coming to drink!

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch& Dinner included

Serengeti Plains to Ngorongoro Crater

After the breakfast at the lodge, you will depart to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We will stopover at Olduvai Gorge, boasting with a history dating back to the dawn of time. It was here, that the anthropologists Drs. Lois and Mary Leakey discovered the skulls of ‘Nutcracker Man’ and ‘Handy Man’, both very significant links in the chain of human evolution.

You will arrive in time for lunch at the lodge and after lunch, you will again descend over 600 meters into the crater to view wildlife for a half day’s safari tour. Supported by a year round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park is its dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot. We will visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, which is one of the main features of the crater. A large number of flamingos, hippos and other water birds can usually been seen here.

Ngorongoro Crater to Tarangire National Park

After the breakfast, you will depart to the Tarangire National Park. The park runs along the line of the Tarangire River and is mainly made up of low-lying hills on the Great Rift Valley floor. Its natural vegetation mainly consists of Acacia woodland and giant African Baobab trees, with huge swamp areas in the south. Both the river and the swamps act like a magnet for wild animals, during Tanzania’s dry season. The Tarangire National Park is reputed to contain some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. This African national park is also home to three rare species of animals – the Greater Kudu, the Fringed-eared Oryx, as well as a few Ashy Starlings. After a picnic lunch do you will do an afternoon game drive.

Tarangire National Park

You will enjoy an early morning game drive in the Tarangire National Park, followed by breakfast at the lodge. After, you will then drive back to Moshi or alternatively to the airport. Upon arrival in Moshi you will have late lunch and that will be the end of our African safari adventure. You will be taken to your hotel, to prepare for tomorrow’s 5 days Zanzibar safari.

Begin planning your Tanzania Honeymoon

Tanzania is unquestionably one of the very best destinations for an African Honeymoon. It has it all for a safari and beach honeymoon - fantastic Indian Ocean havens a short flight away from amazing parks with plenty of big five and predator action. We understand that your Tanzania honeymoon needs to be a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience and absolutely perfect. With our in-depth knowledge of the country and many decades of travel planning experience, we can ensure that it will be.

Begin planning your Tanzania Honeymoon

The best Tanzania honeymoon destinations

Tanzania honeymoon itineraries:, the best lodges for a tanzania honeymoon safari.

Tented Camps or Non-tented Camps   A common misconception is that there is a massive difference between tented camps, and non-tented options. The assumption is that tented lodges are “basic” and not fit for honeymoon luxury whilst wooden structured, solid lodges are more luxurious. In truth, some of the most luxurious camps in the country can have a canvas covering… As well as a pool, amazing food and all the amenities in the world. Likewise, some non-tented options like the Serengeti Serena offer permanent, solid walls – and granted - a pool, but the quality of the safari experience is somewhat under par in comparison to some excellent, authentic, safari-mad tented camps like the fantastic Lake Manze which would definitely provide a honeymoon to remember.    Mobile tented camps   The one exception is when it comes to “mobile tented camps”. Located in the Serengeti, they move two to three times throughout the year to be well positioned for the Great Migration . Because of their mobility they do not have pools, plumbing (though you still get manually heated showers), electricity is limited (but there!) and there are no solid structures, so you are most definitely in a tent… Even though it is a very luxurious tent nonetheless. The “camping” style of the mobile camps does not mean that they aren’t of the highest quality, but if you like big rooms and even bigger pools, then they may not be for you. We think the tented camps exude old school safari romance, so where possible, we will always recommend at least a few nights in one. Heading to a more overtly luxurious camp after this is a great way of mixing adventure and creature comforts and a killer combination.

How much does a Tanzania honeymoon cost?

Tanzania offers a real range of accommodation options with safari prices starting from around $450 per person per night going right up to $2,500 pppn at the top end. These rates generally include all your game viewing activities, meals and drinks. For beach time, the prices are much cheaper, starting at around $180 per person per night, but they also go up to the exclusive island prices which can be $1,700 per person per night.    We can also arrange the internal flights between safari and beach, which as a guide cost around $250 per flight per person; though this is very rough!    Our best value 10-night safari and beach Tanzania honeymoon would cost around $3,500 per person; a mid-range 13-night safari and beach honeymoon would cost around $6,800 pp, and for those who like the finer things in life, a high-end 11-night safari and beach trip would cost around $9,500 pp. An uber-luxurious 10-day safari and beach trip would cost from $15,000 per person upwards.

When to go on a Tanzania safari and beach honeymoon?

Tanzania is located in the tropics so you can expect temperatures of 25 degrees C + throughout the year. It is possible to visit all year round, but the best time for weather is technically from July - September when the weather is dry and the wildlife is prominent. The only time of year we would not recommend if you are looking at beach time on your honeymoon is in April and May when Tanzania experiences its main rainy season... Not very good for an Indian Ocean honeymoon!    However, if you are just looking at safari, are adventerous and on a tight budget, then rainy season can be extraordinary. Lots of new life roam the parks, the bushes are luscious green and it is a beautiful time to be in Tanzania... And the prices of amazing lodges are seriously slashed. However, there is a reason the prices are less - the wildlife is more dispersed so less easy to spot, it is raining and chances of getting stuck in the mud are increased! But for some, Tanzania's green season is an adventure like no other.    Our preferred time of year is in the shoulder season months or October and June. Here, you get reduced rates from high season as well as some fantastic special offers. In some cases, you can get exactly the same high season experience a few days into shoulder season and pay half the price! The wildlife is fantastic in these months and the parks quieter as it is just outside school holidays.    Each time of year has pros and cons for each location, so the best option is to contact us and chat with one of our Tanzania experts.

How to go on a Tanzania safari and beach honeymoon?

Tanzania is blessed with miles of beautiful wild coastline as well as a number of pristine Indian Ocean Islands. From any safari location in Tanzania you can reach the beach within a few hours - a real advantage over other African destinations where you have to cross borders, overnight in city hotels, and generally waste precious money and time.     Further afield, a safari in Tanzania can also be combined with the Seychelles or Mauritius, but you will have to factor in extra travel time and possibly a night in Johannesburg. We would always recommend sticking to the beaches off the mainland for your Tanzania honeymoon, so you can make the most of your precious honeymoon time. Also, this means you can spend the money you put aside for flights instead on more premium accommodation options.

Make your honeymoon special with Tanzania Odyssey

• The South of Tanzania offers smaller boutique lodges and camps which are often owner-run. This gives a more personal and intimate safari experience, which we feel is a vital element of a Tanzania honeymoon. • Don’t head off on safari straight after your wedding - you will be shattered! Ask us about a beach-safari-beach combination which works really well for a varied and relaxing honeymoon. • It is always tempting to save a few pennies on your international flights but make sure you arrive at a decent hour - there is nothing worse than starting your honeymoon at 3am in an empty airport! • Don’t try and do too much. Safari is probably the best honeymoon you can do... but it can be quite full on! It is much better to have a shorter (4 night) safari somewhere really luxurious, rather than a longer safari of dubious quality. • After 20 years of working in Tanzania we have access to some fabulous deals - ask us about our 50%-off-for-the-bride special offer as well as other fantastic Tanzania honeymoon deals. Booking through us will ensure you get treated like royalty on your special trip due to our long established relationships with the best lodges in Tanzania.

As soon as you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your adventure in Tanzania begins with a friendly greeting from your Bush 2 City guide, who welcomes you with a cheerful "Karibu Tanzania - welcome to Tanzania!" You'll be taken to your hotel, offering the perfect chance to relax and get into the African rhythm.

The next day, set out on a unique private safari in your jeep. This tailor-made journey lets you discover Tanzania's breathtaking landscapes and rich wildlife at your leisure. Enjoy watching the animals in their natural surroundings, making lasting memories in Africa's wild heart.

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

If we didn't talk about your safari plans when you arrived yesterday, we'll go over them after breakfast today. Then, we're off to Tarangire National Park, about a two-hour drive from Arusha. On the way, you'll see lots of Tanzania's beautiful scenery.

Tarangire is famous for its large number of elephants — it's like an elephant playground! You'll also see buffalo, lions, wildebeest, and other animals. Keep your eyes peeled for rare animals like kudu and oryx, and even smaller ones like colorful lizards and hyraxes. Bird lovers will enjoy spotting different birds, including the colorful lilac-breasted roller and the big ostrich. The park is also full of big baobab trees and wide-open grasslands. After we spend the day watching animals, we'll head back to our camp for dinner and sleep overnight.

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

After breakfast, a short 30-minute drive will take you to Lake Manyara, a paradise nestled between Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, right by the vast Great Rift Valley. Lake Manyara National Park stands out for its diverse landscapes, home to a wide variety of animals. You'll have the chance to see the lake, explore a lush forest filled with monkeys and birds, spot elephants among the trees, and visit the famous Manyara hippo pool where hippos can be seen bathing. In the afternoon, we'll go to our lodge where you can enjoy dinner and spend the night.

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

After breakfast, we'll head to the Serengeti, about 145 kilometers away, a drive of roughly 3 and a half hours. Once we get there, we'll have lunch and then go on an afternoon safari. The Serengeti is famous for its huge, open plains that amaze everyone, especially if it's your first visit. Over the next few days, we'll see lots of different animals in this amazing place. Every safari drive here is a new adventure, filled with surprises from the wild. You'll see many animals and beautiful scenes that change with the light of day. Remember to take photos, but also to just look around and enjoy the beauty of nature all around you. After a day full of adventure, we'll go back to our camp for dinner and to sleep overnight.

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

Today, we're spending the whole day exploring the Serengeti, where lots of wildlife roam freely. Our adventure might bring us face-to-face with big cats—cheetahs, leopards, and lions—especially since each season changes who we might see. We'll take in the Serengeti's varied scenes, from the water-rich Seronera River to the distinctive kopjes, large rock formations. Lunch will be outdoors, offering a unique experience that varies with the seasons. Depending on the time of year, we may also witness migrating herds alongside the resident animals, making for spectacular sights. After our day of discovery, we return to our lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

After breakfast, we're off to the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive, where lunch will be served on the crater floor, overlooking the hippo pool. This spectacular site is one of Africa's natural wonders, created over two million years ago by a volcanic eruption. Its fertile soils have fostered a unique ecosystem with the highest density of animals in Africa. As we explore the crater, we'll be surrounded by a stunning variety of wildlife, including lions, zebras, buffaloes, and the elusive black rhinos. This experience offers incredible views and close encounters with wildlife. In the late afternoon, we'll make our way back to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

You'll be transferred to Arusha airport to catch your local flight to this exotic destination. Upon landing at Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, our driver will warmly welcome you and escort you on a brief 20-minute journey to your hotel located in the historic heart of Zanzibar City, Stone Town. The evening is yours to enjoy at leisure, with a special dinner prepared by your hotel.

During your stay, you're invited to indulge in the hotel's stunning infinity pool, offering breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, or perhaps visit the spa for a relaxing treatment (available at an additional cost). If you're looking to stay active, the hotel's fitness room is at your disposal. Alternatively, you can simply unwind on a sun lounger, basking in the warm embrace of the sun.

tanzania honeymoon safari and zanzibar

This morning, enjoy your hotel breakfast before embarking on a guided tour of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site rich in history and culture. Stone Town is a melting pot of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences, evident in its architecture and atmosphere. Your adventure begins at the bustling local market, filled with vibrant colors, exotic scents, and lively haggling. Next, you'll visit a serene 19th-century cathedral built on the site of the old slave market, symbolizing the abolition of slavery in 1873.

Wandering Stone Town's narrow alleys, you'll discover Arab-style homes with secretive courtyards behind grand doors, alongside Indian houses adorned with intricate balconies. You'll see significant sites like ‘Tip Tip House,’ the Old Fort, and the People’s Palace Museum. Lunch is at the Silk Route, a rooftop restaurant offering ocean views and delicious Indian cuisine.

After exploring, we'll transfer you to your beach hotel for dinner and a leisurely evening by the sea.

Tanzania is quite likely not the first place that jumps to mind when you think of top honeymoon destinations in Africa, but it’s an amazing choice nonetheless, especially if you and your loved one enjoy a touch of adventure and excitement on your romantic travels on your first view days of married life.

Whether you prefer private romance by the beach or indulging in absolute safari luxury and pampering, whatever you are looking for you can likely find it on a Tanzania Honeymoon safari (except maybe a skiing lodge!).

With dozens of heavenly white sand beaches, prolific national parks, five-star safari lodges and the most obliging people on earth, Tanzania is the perfect place for a honeymoon safari with a difference, which is exactly the factor that contributes to it being a Top Honeymoon Destination.

A romantic view of Ngorongoro Crater from andBeyond | Tanzania Honeymoon

Going on a romantic adventure is all about making special memories together that the two of you can share for years to come. And what could be more special than witnessing a playful herd of elephants cavorting in a muddy waterhole on a hot day, or watching a cheetah stalking across the savannah or even watching the great migration in Serengeti National Park?

The scenery on a Tanzania Honeymoon Safari is sublime and the wildlife abundant. Going on a Tanzania honeymoon doesn’t mean you have to rough it; there are numerous luxury safari camps where you can enjoy a wildlife-watching experience in the lap of luxury.

Tranquil and picturesque lodge settings, high-quality service, superb food, spa facilities and a dreamy ambience ensure a romantic escape second to none. Opulent Sasakwa Lodge in the exclusive Singita Grumeti concessions is just such a place. It doesn’t come cheap, but – if you can afford it – you will never forget it!

A romantic beach view | Tanzania Honeymoon Safari

One of the best places for a romantic escape is the tropical island of Zanzibar where you and your partner can decompress and reconnect on tropical white sand beaches without a care in the world. With its dazzling sun-bleached sands and palm-fringed shores, a honeymoon here is the picture of paradise.

Coming here for a rest after your honeymoon is the perfect way to unwind and round off your trip to Tanzania. There are numerous fully inclusive resorts throughout Zanzibar where your every need will be taken care of so that the two of you can enjoy spending quality time together in stunning surroundings, a true top honeymoon destination.

Zanzibar, Top Honeymoon Destinations

A stroll along the beach at sunset followed by a romantic meal for two is the perfect way to spend an island evening, while a sundowner cruise in a traditional dhow (wooden sailing boat) will allow you to explore some of the smaller islands off of Zanzibar in the Zanzibar archipelago.

If you’re looking for accommodation recommendation, Gold Zanzibar Beach house and Spa is a perfect choice and has recently been chosen as one of the best luxuries stays in 2021. Gold Zanzibar Beach House and Spa invite everyone to explore their tropical paradise on Zanzibar’s tideless white sand Kendwa beach.

But, for the ultimate romantic escape, head further south to Mafia Island where stylish and exclusive Pole Pole Bungalows will cater for your every need without breaking the bank on your Tanzania honeymoon safari

What to Look Out for When Booking a Tanzania Safari Honeymoon

Planning your first adventure together as a married couple is rather exciting. And spending this in Tanzania is an outstanding choice. There are some things you need to keep in mind when travelling to East Africa. Especially on your honeymoon safari in Tanzania so that both of you can have the time of your life.

Tanzania Honeymoon Safari

Not Every Game Reserve has the Same Animals

With the location of the different game reserves in Tanzania, the terrain and landscape differ. Along with the different terrains, comes a variety of wildlife. Cheetahs would prefer more open grasslands whereas Hippos are found in areas with abundant water.

The best would be to create a bucket list of wildlife you would like to see while on your Tanzania honeymoon safari and then select the reserve better known for sightings of this wildlife.

For example : Selous Game Reserve which is in southern Tanzania. This vast conservation area is home to Africa’s Big 5 as well as all of the top predators, including the lion, wild dog, cheetah, leopard, and spotted hyena.

And the animals are plentiful: a Selous safari is ideal for seeing large elephant and buffalo herds, as well as healthy populations of hippo, giraffe, and sable antelope. So this type of honeymoon safari would be for people that have not been on Safari before and would like to therefore see a variety of wildlife.

Top Honeymoon Destinations

The Luxury Camp in Tanzania is a Big Investment

Including a stay at a luxury camp for your Tanzania honeymoon safari, can be expensive. However, travelling to a more elite camp does have its benefits. Luxury camps generally have fewer rooms and therefore have fewer people in camp at any time. Thus, being on your honeymoon in Tanzania would allow you a little more privacy- which is essentially what everyone desires.

Having fewer people in the camp also means fewer people during game drives on your Tanzania Safari. The number of people in each vehicle would be less and offers you a more personalised experience and falls nicely in line with all the covid 19 travel restrictions.

Top Honeymoon Destinations

As there are fewer rooms at luxury camps, they very often do not allow children to stay in camp, which is ideal for a honeymoon safari in Tanzania.

Most Lodges in Tanzania Offer More than Just Safari Drives

You’re visiting Tanzania for the first time, and you’re looking forward to your first safari. When you think of a honeymoon in Tanzania, you envision going on a game drive early in the morning as the sun rises over the African jungle.

However, even on honeymoon in Africa, there are other ways to explore the bush. Most lodges offer bush walks or even longer walking safaris where you are able to get to experience the bush first hand. Depending on the location of your lodge, you would also be able to explore either in a motorboat or canoe.

Tanzania Honeymoon Safari

With the game activities mostly scheduled for the early mornings or late afternoon, it might be worth looking at a camp that offers a little more facilities as well. Maybe a spa or even a gym. Nothing beats a back massage out in the African bush on a Tanzania honeymoon safari in a top honeymoon destination.

Three of Four Days is Usually Enough Time at Camp

Although this might be your first safari, you might not want to spend all your time in the bush. A Tanzania honeymoon has so much to offer, maybe you would like to combine your stay with another great experience, such as the islands off Tanzania or hiking in the mountains of Mount Kilimanjaro or even exploring the stupendous Ngorongoro Crater .

Tanzania Honeymoon Safari

Ideally, you would like to spend a minimum of 3 nights at a lodge. This would give you enough time on your Tanzania Honeymoon but also give you some time to enjoy the lodge facilities or just relax in your room. Most safaris are rushed and you might have booked a great room, but you hardly spend time here.
