London Business School Campus and Community: What is it like? Should I visit?

“. . . when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.”

– Samuel Johnson

At London Business School we’re often talking about how fantastic London is. . .  and it is! I am a fairly recent transplant to the city myself, and I can confirm it has not let me down! It is not only an amazing place to live, but also a fantastic place to do an MBA.

As a potential applicant there a number of factors which have likely played a role in which business schools you will apply to, and location is certainly one not to ignore!

We are extremely fortunate to be located in the heart of one of the world’s greatest cities, with 75% of fortune 500 companies on our doorstep and culture aplenty, I’m sure I don’t have to convince most of the draw of doing an MBA in London. There are others who may worry about being overwhelmed in a city so large; fortunately the campus is a warm, welcoming sort of place.

So what is the London Business School campus and community like?

London brings all the excitement you would expect from a multi-cultural metropolis; however, that is balanced by a campus with an intimate feel. Set overlooking beautiful Regents Park, we are centrally located and easily accessible from all corners of London.

Many of the School’s buildings surround an interior quad where the student body gathers, enabling the vibrant community to flourish and connect on a daily basis. In fact it would be pretty difficult to avoid your classmates even if you wanted to!

As a school of around 1,800 post-graduate business students spanning 9 degree programmes, it  is very close-knit, collaborative and active community. One of the things I appreciate most about the School is that students (and alumni) really do help each other out!

To really get a feel for the campus and community, you should think about visiting us.

Will a visit to the London Business School campus impact my application?

We know that many of our applicants come from far corners of the globe and do not always have the capacity to travel to London before submitting an application. For this reason, we do not penalise applicants who do not visit campus. We do encourage you, however, to see if there are any London Business School events in your area. These provide a fantastic opportunity to connect with the School staff, alumni and sometimes current students.

Of course, if you can make it to campus, we would be happy to show you around and provide you with further insight into the programme though one of our twice weekly drop-in Q & A sessions or monthly information sessions .

A campus visit can also be valuable even after you have applied, as it helps you to assess your own fit with the School and get a sense as to whether this is a place you see yourself spending 15, 18 or 21 months!  I encourage you to do your research on London and all the opportunities it affords and to speak with staff, alumni and students about what the LBS community and campus are like.

I hope to meet some of you on campus soon!

We also accept EA scores from candidates who have previously scored well on the GMAT / GRE when applying for their masters, but whose scores are no longer valid. Valid scores must be less than five years old and you must request for the test organisation to report the official score to us. Please submit your official test taker copy of your score with your application.

Please note, you may be asked by the Admissions Committee to retake the test before receiving an offer.

A strong GMAT or GRE score helps us assess your ability to succeed on the programme.

So what happens next?

Once you successfully submit your application. Here’s what to expect next.

Your application will be considered by the Admissions Committee in keeping with the deadlines relevant to the stage you applied. If you are successful your Regional Admissions Manager will begin the process of finding an alumnus/alumna in your region to interview you.

Selected applicants will then be invited to join us for the interview stage. Interviews are conducted by alumni or senior admissions staff of the One-year MBA programme and your interview will take place in the region in which you are based. Based on interviewer availability, you may be asked to travel in order to complete your interview.

Interview feedback is then combined with your initial application and used by the Admissions Committee to reach a decision which may be:

  • Offer – The exceptional merits of your application and interview mean London Business School would like to offer you a place to join the One-year MBA programme
  • Reject – Your application will come to an end for this year but the option to apply in the subsequent admission cycle is available
  • Waitlist – London Business will not be making an offer at this stage, but we remain open to gathering more information concerning your candidacy given the strengths of your application

Please note that all offers are made via email. Given varying time zones this email may reach you outside of working hours.

Each year some applicants who are placed on the waitlist are later offered a place in the current class, or sometimes for the following year. If you are placed on the waitlist you will be provided with additional information about next steps.

How to apply FAQs

Applications for the inaugural 2025 class will open in July 2024. Please  register your interest  to receive programme updates.

You must ensure that your GMAT, GMAT Focus or GRE score is valid upon submitting your application.

Our average GMAT score for the MBA class is around 700, with a typical class range of 600 to 800. You should note that the minimum score we will accept is usually around 600, depending on your academic and professional background.

Our score expectations for GMAT Focus are in line with the equivalent scores from the previous GMAT. You should aim for 645, but we are likely to require at least 555 and above.

For GRE, we prefer scores over 160 for both verbal and quantitative sections.

We will look at all elements of your score and although a good score is preferable, the GMAT / GRE is just one of the admissions criteria. Just as a high score does not guarantee admission, a below average score does not always eliminate a candidate.

If you feel that you could improve your score, you are advised to retake the test to help make you a more competitive candidate. If you plan to retake your GMAT after the application deadline you should liaise directly with the MBA admissions team at [email protected] for further advice.

We will accept the EA if you have a good score on a prior GMAT / GRE, but it is from more than five years ago.

You should be aware that some employers may prefer you to have a GMAT score.

Please note, you may be asked by the Admissions Committee to retake a test before receiving an offer if they feel that your current score is too low. Practice the GMAT test with London Business School's GMAT simulator and prepare yourself for the test.

No. You’ll need to select which programme you’re applying to at the beginning of your application. If you are unsure which is best for you, please contact our recruitment team  [email protected] .

The School does not have any arrangements for students to transfer between its programmes or to/from a programme at another institution.

The expected range of work experience after completing your masters in management is 3 to 10 years.

We will consider you, but the strength of your case will depend on the quality as well as the length of your work experience.

In addition to having obtained a masters in management, you will need to have at least three years’ relevant, high-quality work experience that demonstrates a strong track record of achievement.

Your work experience does not necessarily need to include experience as a manager. The programme is suitable for people who come from technical backgrounds (for example, engineering or IT), as well as for people who have worked in finance or consultancy or run their own business. We also welcome applications from people who have worked in the public sector/government.

Yes, we believe that military experience is very valuable. We strongly encourage former military personnel onto our programmes, as they have proven leadership, interpersonal and team-building skills.

Application to the One-year MBA will be free to London Business School alumni and active military candidates.

It’s your last evening – soak as much of London as you can. Head to Oxford Street and pick up some last-minute souvenirs!

Business Insider

College tour season is about to kick off. Here are 10 tips from college tour guides to have a successful campus visit.

  • As spring starts, colleges around the country welcome parents and students to campus for tours.
  • College tour guides want people to arrive on time, ask the right questions, and have fun.
  • They also recommend students take the tour on their own, without their parents.

Spring break is right around the corner, and for many high school students and their parents, that means many will be hitting the road to tour colleges around the country.

To make the most of your visit, Business Insider spoke with college students and tour guides. They know the campuses like the back of their hands, and they know how to walk backward.

Here are the dos and don'ts of college tours from student guides.

1. Get there with no time to spare, but don't be late

You won't get points for arriving early, so try to arrive on time. But if you do happen to arrive late , there's no need to worry.

"If something comes up and you are late, ask your guide what you missed once the tour finishes," Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College, told BI. "They will happily fill you in."

2. Dress to impress, but don't sacrifice comfort

It's important to look nice, but you don't have to don a jacket and tie. Tour-goers should put their best foot forward with a sturdy pair of walking shoes , and don't forget to dress for the weather.

"At Fairleigh Dickinson, tours go out rain or shine, so make sure to wear clothes that will keep you warm," Emily Bone, class of '25, said.

3. Don't forget to sign in, but skip the CV

Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.

"Students can leave their resumes at home," Henry Millar, a senior at William & Mary, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."

4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible

Some schools offer the option of letting parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.

"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University, told BI.

Students can comfortably ask questions without a parent present and compare notes afterward.

5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations

This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.

"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, class of '24 at Bucknell University, said.

But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT/ACT scores or what they wrote about in their essay.

6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead

Parents may be tempted to raise their hand again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.

"Try to take the backseat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, class of '25 at Reed College, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."

7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered

Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.

"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University, said.

Therefore, get your tour guide's email address so that you can follow up afterward.

8. You may know exactly what school is right, but keep an open mind

Don't be surprised if a city-living kid is suddenly intrigued by a small-town setting.

"The college search and college experience are all about getting to know yourself better and growing, so on a tour, students have to trust themselves and their judgment of the 'world' they've just stepped into," Thomas Elias, class of '24 at University of Scranton, said.

9. Take in as much as you can, but remember to have fun

Sure, preparing for the next four years can be scary and stressful. But it's also an exciting milestone, so enjoy the ride.

"These tours serve as great opportunities to learn more about colleges — along with their cities, culture, and people," Connor Gee, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, said. "Have fun with it!"

10. Weigh the pros and cons of the school, but don't stop there

Your tour may be over, but you can still learn other ways to immerse yourself in college life .

"See if the school offers additional experiences, like eating in the cafeteria or attending a class," Emily Balda, class of '24 at Seton Hall University, said. "Consider it 'food for thought.'"
