Say you have 5 days to travel in Okinawa , how would you spend these days in the best possible way for an unforgettable subtropical island holiday? Okinawa consists of more than 160 islands, so in order to minimize travel time and costs and maximize your fun time, this 5 days Okinawa itinerary is concentrated on the Main Island * and the small islands nearby. It is good to note that the itinerary below works best between April and October, because the weather and water temperature is best for swimming in the warmer months. You can, however, still travel to Okinawa between November and March and enter the ocean with a wetsuit but many people will find it too chilly. Let us present to you the perfect 5-day trip plan for Okinawa that includes various activities, culture, nature, and restaurant recommendations!

Day One: Arrival – Naha

Day two: a trip to tokashiki island, day three: yomitan – nago, day four: motobu, day five: tataki falls or yambaru – return to airport, traveling in japan, other articles you might be interested in.

There are several flights per day leaving for Naha from most major airports in mainland Japan. Of course, if you want to make the most of your time in Okinawa we recommend that you take a morning flight. If you don’t want to wake up at (or even before) the crack of dawn, staying in an airport hotel the night before is definitely a good idea. After arriving in Naha, drop off your luggage in the lobby of your chosen hotel first so you can go around Naha with your hands free. 

Assuming you still have most of the afternoon left, let’s head for Shuri Castle first to learn more about the region’s history. You will have an amazing view of the city from the observation areas of the castle, and while the castle itself will still be under construction for a while after the tragic fire in 2019, you can get an idea of how grand this center of Okinawa used to be. If you want to know more about the history, Hime Yuri Museum is also recommended. Okinawa is known for its beautiful beaches but it also has a sad war history.

Kinjo Stone Road , a picturesque old road that visitors of the castle used to take and has been well-preserved, is also nice to visit. It’s full of colorful flowers and if you walk from the castle’s direction it is all downhill. The pottery street of Tsuboya Yachimun , this atmospheric street has many cute little pottery shops where they sell Okinawa’s traditional kitchen wares. End your day in the famous Kokusai Dori , or International Street for some good shopping and people-watching.

Stay: in Naha (central)

Eat: Soka noodles in Inaka Kosetsuichiba Minami-ten (lunch or dinner)

Today you will make your first acquaintance with Okinawa’s gorgeous blue ocean! You will take the 9 am ferry (Marine Liner Tokashiki) to this small island that is part of the Kerama Island National Park. It is a good idea to book the ferry ahead of time as it fills up quickly in the summer season. You can either book a diving tour with one of the diving companies if you want to go scuba diving, or you can relax on the beach and snorkel by yourself. Diving tours are great for those who want to experience scuba diving and don’t want to worry about anything, as the company will take care of your transportation and equipment. Tokashiki has incredibly clear, deep blue water where you can meet sea turtles, small sharks, octopi, and all kinds of tropical fish. It will be one of the most unforgettable experiences in your life. 

If you want to enjoy Tokashiki by yourself, upon arrival in the harbor you can take the bus to Aharen Beach. On the beach, you can rent all kinds of equipment such as snorkeling wear, beach umbrellas, and other stuff that makes your stay more fun. They also have a service that transports you to the uninhabited island Hanari , which is simply one of the best snorkeling spots in the world with a soft white sand bottom dotted with coral formations. You can easily spend a whole day here if you love snorkeling, but in that case, you need to make sure to bring your own lunch with you as there are no shops on Hanari. If you’d also like to discover other parts of the island, you can rent bicycles , scooters, and cars in the harbor area and in the Aharen Beach area (you need a Japanese or international license for scooter and car rental). Because the island is rather small, you can’t really get lost. Make sure to catch the ferry back to Naha at 5:30 pm, and enjoy your dinner in Naha.

Eat: Okinawan izakaya food in Aguncha (dinner)

If you can drive in Japan (you need a Japanese or international driver’s license), today is the day to rent a car ( Niconico ). Otherwise, you will have to take the bus and use taxis* for shorter distances as trains don’t go up north so far. Your first stop will be the Banta Cafe of luxury hotel Hoshinoya Okinawa. You can enjoy their funky signature drinks and a snack if you’re hungry (go for the spam onigiri!) with an amazing ocean view in this gorgeous outdoor cafe. Then it is time for some active exercise in Forest Adventure Onna . You can enjoy fun zip lines and other large climbing equipment and challenge yourself physically. If you still have energy left, we recommend checking out the nearby Blue Cave , a popular spot to go snorkeling. You can rent equipment on the spot, or you can book a snorkeling tour with a local company . Also, Nago has the famous Henoko beach with U.S. base issue. Okinawa has amazingly beautiful beaches and rich nature that local people in Okinawa have protected for a long time. And the effort has continued still today. Henoko beach is really beautiful and you can often communicate with locals there. It is worth visiting for anyone caring for this planet. 

If you’d prefer doing something a bit less active and like making your own stuff you can check out Onna Glass Workshop . They don’t only offer the opportunity to create your own Ryukyu glassware, but you can also experience their cool illuminated glass labyrinth. At the end of the day, head to Nago for dinner and check in at your hotel.

Stay: in Nago

Eat: The Bros Sandwich Stand (lunch) and hamburgers at Warren’s Place 2.1

Today will be a day full of ocean fun, so wear your swimsuit underneath your clothes and bring your towels and a few bottles of water for showering. First, head to Sesoko island’s Anchi Beach . You can rent snorkeling equipment on the beach, the shallow, clear waters here are perfect for floating around while enjoying the underwater view and above the water with a long bridge spanning the distance between Motobu and Sesoko. Alternatively, you can also book a SUPping tour  to the same beach for some relaxing stand-up paddling on the relatively calm water. Enjoy your lunch in the open air on Sesoko before heading north to Bisezaki Kaigan . This lush green seaside area features shadow-rich lanes lined by tropical fukugi trees that you can enjoy by rental bicycle or ox cart. Here, you can take another dip in the sea in a shallow area teeming with fish and with a gentle stream that you can ‘ride’. Enjoy your time here leisurely before heading back to Nago.

Eat: Taco Rice at Shimahiro or Fuu Cafe (lunch) and Okinawan home-style food at Chura-hana

It is already your last day in Okinawa, but let’s wake up early and enjoy it to the max! Your schedule of the day will depend on which time your airplane leaves, hopefully, you were able to book a return flight that leaves after 7 pm. If you have less time, a trip to Takaki Falls is recommended. This lovely short hike via a streaming river (around 30 minutes one-way) brings you to a paradise-like waterfall where you can take a refreshing dive in the small lake. The drive back to Naha airport will take around 1.5 hours if you take the toll road.

If you have a bit more time on your hands (and a rental car at your disposal), you can go to Yambaru, the jungly northern part of Okinawa. Stop by the Yambaru Adventure Farm for a dirty but fun ride on an ATV on their mud course and taste their delicious local coffee afterward. Then, drive to the Okinawa Rail Learning Center to meet the rare and endangered rail (bird) that can only be seen here. Keep in mind that the drive back to Naha airport will take around 2.5 hours if you take the toll road and longer if you take the scenic coastal road.

Eat: coffee and curry at Matayoshi Coffee Farm

Okinawa Travel Guide: 1 to 5-day Okinawa Itinerary without a car for first time visitors

Before going to Okinawa, I had no idea what to do or see in Naha and other parts of the main island. And as I was researching all the best attractions in Okinawa, I thought I would need a car to see all the sites.

But after spending over a month on Okinawa Main Island, I can confidently say that you can see many parts of the island on your own and without a car. Plus, you can see the best of Okinawa in only 5 days.

I compiled a solo Okinawa itinerary for independent travellers going to Okinawa for one to five days. If this is your first time going to Okinawa, keep reading and find out how you can travel in Okinawa without a car and see all the best attractions on your own.

Okinawa travel guide: what you need to know

Before you start your solo trip to Okinawa, take a look at some of these useful travel tips for your day trip:

• Get money from ATMs at the airport or 7-Eleven
• Selected 7-Eleven or Family Mart in Naha city centre – Esim Plus tourist SIM card from ￥900 for a SIM card and top up 3, 5, 7, 14 or 30 days.
• Online – Order an eSIM from ￥1,099 for 1GB for 5 days (check if your mobile phone support eSim)
• Naha Hārī (May) – see dragon boat races, sumo tournaments and fireworks at Naha Shinto Wharf. It is Okinawa’s largest Dragon Boat festival.
• Naha Great Tug-of-war Festival (October) – see a parade and live show, and see the tug-of-war rope, recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest rope in the world.
• Naha Sakura Festival at Yogi Park
• Nago City Cherry Blossom Festival at Nago Central Park
• Yaese Cherry Blossom Festival at Yaese Park
• Motobu Yaedake Cherry Blossom at Mount Yae in Western Motobu Peninsula

How to get to Okinawa Japan

Many international and domestic flights fly into Naha Airport , which is located on the southwestern side of Okinawa Main island.

Since Naha is only 3km from the airport, the easiest and cheapest way to get to Naha city centre is by taking the monorail . I highly recommend choosing a hotel near a monorail station to get around Naha and other parts of the island easily.

How to travel around Okinawa without a car

Many travellers visiting Okinawa will explore the island with a car because Okinawa Main Island is quite big, and certain places can only be reached by car.

However, if you don’t want to bother with car rental, don’t have a driver’s license, or just don’t want to bother with driving and finding parking spots, I have some options for you.

Walking is the best way to see Naha in Okinawa. This is the best option for exploring Naha city centre and the areas around the monorail stations .

Okinawa Urban Monorail – Yui Rail

Okinawa Urban Monorail , also known as Yui Rail , is a monorail linking Naha Airport, Naha, and Urasoe on the main island of Okinawa. This is the best way to travel from the airport to central Naha.

One way ticket starts from ￥230 . Or you can use Okica or other IC Cards , a rechargeable smartcard that allows you to take public transportation. Okica cards can be purchased from the ticket vending machine. Purchase amount includes￥500 deposit.

1-day monorail pass (￥800) and 2-day monorail pass (￥1400) are also available. You may get discounts on admission fees to Shuri Castle, Tamaudun, Shikinaen Garden, Okinawa Prefectural Museum and the Former Navy Underground Headquarters.

Okinawa Bus

Okinawa Bus Ltd. has several bus companies that operate different routes throughout the island. Many of these routes start at Naha Bus Terminal next to Asahibashi Station .

Travelling within central Naha costs ￥240 per ride. And if you travel further, the fare is based on the distance travelled .

When you get on the bus, get a ticket. And when you are near your destination, watch the screen with your corresponding number; it will indicate your fee. The fee is paid when you alight. Pay exact change as change is not given.

Alternatively, you can use Okica or other IC Cards . Just tap when you get on the bus and tap out when you alight.

Moreover, 1-day bus pass (￥2,500) and 3-day bus pass (￥5,000) are available. These options are excellent for taking day trips around the island.

High-speed boat or ferry

A high-speed boat or ferry is an excellent way to see nearby islands. Both options are available for visiting Tokashiki Island , Zamami Island and other islands near Naha.

And you can also travel to other parts of Okinawa Main Island, like Motobu . The Jinbei Marine (Takuma 3) high-speed boat starts from Tomari Port dock 7C in Naha and goes to Nago, then Motobu .

Where to stay in Naha Okinawa as a solo traveller

If you are visiting Naha Okinawa for the first time, stay somewhere central and close to a monorail station so you can get around Okinawa easily.

I highly recommend staying near  Asahibashi Station  or  Miebashi Station  because you can take the monorail from the Naha Airport to the city centre and walk to your hotel.

You can technically see all the best highlights in Naha in two days . But I highly recommend staying a few more days to explore other parts of Okinawa Main Island. And it is possible to see other parts of Okinawa island without a car.

1 Day in Okinawa: best things to do in Naha

Naha is the perfect city to start your Okinawa trip. It was the political and economic center during the Ryukyu Kingdom. Today, the capital city of Okinawa is the biggest and most populous city on the island.

On your first day in Naha, see all the best attractions around the city centre.

1. Famous tourist attractions in Naha

Walk northwest towards the water and some of the famous tourist attractions on day 1 of your Okinawa trip. There is a lovely manicured garden, shrine, temple, and a white sand beach with crystal blue water.

• Fukushuen Garden (9am-9pm; closed Wednesdays; ￥200) – a Chinese-style garden built using traditional techniques from Fuzhou, China.
• Naminoue Shrine (9am-5pm; free) – a Shinto shrine perched on a cliff overlooking Naminoue Beach. Boats entering Naha Port pray for a safe journey, while people visiting the shrine pray for a rich harvest.
• Naminoue Beach (24 hours; free) – the only beach in Naha. It’s next to a highway, but the water is crystal clear.

The neighbourhood of Tsuboya is synonymous with ceramics. It was once a major center of ceramic production until it was moved to Yomitan, a village 30km north of Naha.

However, you can still see traces of its ceramic past in this area. There are two old step kilns, a museum, and a historic residence.

Check out these highlights of Tsuboya:

• Tsuboya Yachimun Street – find unique Okinawan ceramics at one of many family-run shops on this cobblestone street.
• Naha Municipal Tsuboya Pottery Museum (10am-6pm; closed Mondays;￥350) – get a free audio guide and walk through the museum. Learn about the history of Okinawan pottery and various pottery techniques and see the excavated remains of Hira-gama flat kiln.
• Arakaki Residence (1-5pm Friday to Sunday; free) – learn about the history of ceramic production in Tsuboya and see an old step kiln.

2. Naha city centre

Naha City Center is centred around Kokusai Dori , the city’s main street and all the covered shopping streets and attractions in the surrounding area.

Several stations serve central Naha on the Okinawa Urban Monorail, and it is the best place to eat dinner and buy souvenirs.

Look for these highlights while you are meandering the shopping streets:

• Kokusai Dori Shopping Street – 1.6km long street with souvenir shops, restaurants and bars. On Sundays, the street is for pedestrians only.
• Heiwadori Shopping Arcade – covered shopping street with souvenir and second-hand shops.
• Tsuboya Ufu Shisa – it is said that the shisa came to Okinawa from China in the 15th century. The mythical creature inspired by the lion, is a guardian deity and an important part of the Okinawan culture. It invites good luck and blocks evil spirits. You’ll see many of these at the entrances of buildings.
• Saion Ufu Shisa – this is the brother of Tsuboya Ufu Shisa.
• Makishi Public Market (8am-10pm) – you can still see the market filled with fresh seafood, meat, produce, and restaurants at the temporary location. The original market location is in the middle of construction.

2 Days in Okinawa: things to see around Naha

On day 2 of your Okinawa trip, visit other parts of Naha and a neighbouring city called Urasoe . The best way to see all the tourist attractions is by taking the monorail to Urasoemaeda Station, Shuri Station, and Omoromachi Station .

How to get around Okinawa on Day 2: buy a 1-day monorail pass (￥800) and get unlimited use for 24 hours. Show your day pass to certain facilities (Shuri Castle, Tamaudun Mausoleum, and Okinawa Prefectural Museum) and get a discount.

1. Attractions in Urasoe City (Urasoemaeda Station)

Urasoe City is just north of Naha City and near the end of the monorail line. It was the birthplace of the Ryukyu Kingdom and still has many historical sites related to the culture today.

While there are many things to see in Urasoe, focus on these two attractions in Urasoe Park so you can have time for other sites later.

• Urasoe Castle Ruins (24 hours; free) – see what’s remaining of Urasoe Castle from the 13th century. Also, look for Stone paved Road ; it was part of the path of King ShōNei Historic Road from Shuri Castle to Urasoe Castle.
• Urasoe Yodore (9am-6pm; free) – the tombs of King Eiso (west crypt) and King ShōNei (east crypt) are found in the hillside caves where stone coffins were put in the crypts. However, the crypts are closed with a masonry wall but are still cool to see.

2. Highlights around Shuri Castle (Shuri Station)

Hop on the monorail, take it to Shuri Station, and explore the area. There are several sites in the Shuri area that you do not want to miss.

• Sairaiin (Daruma Temple) (7am-6pm; free) – walk through a series of bright red torii gates and see the daruma dolls (round Japanese traditional dolls aka a lucky talisman) at this Buddhist temple.
• Shurijo Castle (8:30am-6pm; ￥400) – the former royal palace was one of the best attractions in Naha. But unfortunately, many areas, including the main hall, burnt down on October 31, 2019. But you can still go up to the observation deck for a panoramic view of the area. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Tamaudun (9am-6pm; ￥300) – the Royal Mausoleum built in 1501 for King Sho En and 19 Ryukyu kings who ruled between 1470 and 1879. The tomb has three crypts, but they are not accessible. There is also a small museum, but everything is written in Japanese. Registered as a World Heritage Site.
• Kinjo-cho Stone Paved Path (24 hours; free) – built in the 16th century during the Ryukyu Kingdom, the ancient cobblestone path connects Shuri Castle to other districts. Today, you can see traditional Okinawan houses and several springs along the path.

3. Other attractions in Naha (Omoromachi Station)

And finally, get back on the monorail and take it to Omoromachi Station in Naha City’s new downtown area. This is a relatively new commercial area in Okinawa. You can enjoy a bit of culture and do some major shopping!

• Okinawa Prefectural Museum (9am-6pm; closed Mondays; ￥530 General, ￥400 Art Museum, ￥800 temporary exhibition) – learn about Okinawa’s Ryukyu culture through its permanent collection which has over 100,000 artifacts.
• T Galleria Okinawa by DFS – enjoy duty-free shopping with over 140 brand-name stores at this upscale mall.
• San-A Naha Main Place – local shopping mall with a department store, grocery shop, restaurants and a movie theatre.

3 Days in Okinawa: day trip to Yomitan and Mihama American Village

During the late 1970s, Okinawa’s ceramic production moved from Tsuboya in Naha to Yomitan Village , 30km north of Naha. The area thrived as the population grew. Today, it is one of the best attractions on Okinawa Main Island.

Yomitan has other highlights, including a lighthouse at the northern tip of Yomitan and many beaches dotting the pristine coast. For this itinerary, we’ll focus on the area around Yomitan Village.

How to get around Okinawa on day 3: get a 1-day bus day pass (￥2,500) at the tourist information centre or Naha Bus Terminal. FYI – it costs ￥1,100 from Naha to Yomitan, ￥630 from Yomitan to American Village and ￥740 from American Village to Naha. Buying the day pass is about the same same amount but you may end up taking more bus rides and it will save the hassle.

1. Yomitan Village

Yomitan pottery village (yochimun no sato).

Yomitan Pottery Village is the heart of the ceramic scene and has over 50 artisanal potters. Each pottery workshop sells its creations and operates at different times. If there is a specific shop you want to visit, check the hours of operation before you go.

See the large step kiln in the centre of the village and nearby coffee shops. And if you are visiting in November, check out Yomitan Yachimun Pottery Market . It is Okinawa’s largest pottery market, and it only happens once a year.

Zakimi Castle

During the early 15th century, Zakimi Castle was built to protect from invaders from the north. It was built with several innovative masonry techniques to create a solid stonewall and a strong foundation for the castle.

However, only the wavelike stone walls remain today. But this is still worth visiting since Zakimi Castle is one of the best-preserved examples of an Okinawan castle defensive design. And it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is free to visit the castle. But there’s a fee for Yuntanza Museum (9am-6pm; ￥500) at the entrance. It has exhibits showcasing the history of the castle and the area’s craft heritage.

How to get to Yomitan : from anywhere in Naha, take bus 20, 28, 29 or 120 ( see route for bus 20 and 120 from Naha Bus Terminal to Yomitan Pottery Village ). Alight at Oyashi Iriguchi bus stop and walk 14 minutes .

2. Mihama American Village

Located in Chatan, a town in central Okinawa, Mihama American Village is a large entertainment complex and an outdoor shopping centre with a theme-park-type atmosphere .

Mihama American Village got its name because over 50% of Chatan is covered by US military bases. This is the area where you can find everything Americana, from food and shopping to everything else.

Here are some things to check out:

• Shop and eat at Depot Island , a large entertainment and shopping complex
• Visit Christmas Land , a store filled with all things Christmas
• Visit nearby beaches like Sunset Beach and Araha Beach
• See large-scale woodblock prints at Bokunen Art Museum
• Watch the sunset at the Sunset Walk promenade
• Eat American or Mexican food (Tacos Cafe Taco Loco is really good!)

How to get to Mihama American Village : walk 14 minutes to Uza Kominkan bus stop from Zakimi Castle and take bus 28 or 29 ( see the route for bus 28 & 29 from Zakimi Castle to Mihama American Village ). Then, walk 4 minutes towards the harbour.

How to get back to Naha : take bus 20, 28, 29 or 120 at Mihama American Village Iriguchi bus stop ( see the route for bus 28 & 29 from Mihama American Village to Naha Bus Terminal ).

4 Days in Okinawa: day trip to Motobu

Motobu is a small town on the northwestern Okinawan Main Island, 85km north of Naha. The Motobu Peninsula is known for several attractions, including Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium at Ocean Expo Park, Nakijin Castle Ruins and cherry blossoms in Yaedake Sakuranomori Park .

Because of the accessibility and timing of the high-speed boat, day 4 of your Okinawa itinerary will focus mainly on around Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and the surrounding area.

How to get to Motobu: Take Jinbei Marine (Takuma 3) to Motobu Toguchi Port from Tomari Port in Naha. The high-speed boat departs from port 7C at 8:30am, taking 2 hours. Then take a cab to the aquarium . On the way back, take a cab to the port and hop on the 4pm boat . Buy tickets at the ticket offices at Tomari Port and Toguchi Port. It costs ￥1,000 each way.

1. Ocean Expo Park – Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Ocean Expo Park is a state-run park in the western Motobu Peninsula region that originated from Expo 75, a World’s Fair held at the exact spot in 1975.

While most exhibits were removed, many new ones have been added to the park, including the most popular attraction: Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the most popular attraction at Ocean Expo Park. It has the world’s largest aquarium , with a tank capacity of about 10,000 tons .

The highlight has to be seeing the whale sharks and manta rays at the Kuroshio Sea tank . Besides the giant tank, you can see other tropical fish and other sea creatures in the coral, deep sea, and other fish tanks.

When leaving the aquarium, ensure you don’t miss several attractions outside. You can see the Manatee pool, sea turtle pool and dolphin lagoon .

It costs ￥2,180 when you buy a ticket at the aquarium and ￥1,950 at Umichurara (souvenir store on Kokusai Dori) or the tourist information centre. The aquarium is open from 8:30am-6:30pm.

Native Okinawan Village

If you have time after the aquarium, see traditional Okinawan life in a reconstructed village from the Ryukyu Kingdom era at the Native Okinawan Village . Also, see the Omoro Arboretum with native Okinawan plants. The entrance is free.

2. Emerald Beach and Bise Village

For the remainder of the day trip, spend some time around Emerald Beach at the far northeast corner of Ocean Expo Park and Bis Village .

Emerald Beach

The Y-shaped white sand Emerald Beach is one of the 6 Michelin Guide’s top beaches in Okinawa, and it is the only Michelin-starred beach on the main island (I didn’t know beaches could have Michelin stars – who knew?!)

See the white sand and crystal aqua water around this famed beach. You can swim and rent equipment from April to October. But you can still visit the beach during other months.

Bise Village

Just north of Emerald Beach is Bise Village , a coastal village known for its many Fukugi Trees (garcinia trees) that protect the village from natural causes, including typhoons.

You can walk around the village and see rows of Fukugi Trees, Sea Almond Trees, cultural properties, unusual stone walls made from poritid corals and more.

If you rent a bicycle, you can cycle all the way to Bisezaki , the northern tip of the peninsula. The water there is shallow and blue.

5 Days in Okinawa: day trips around Naha

On day 5 of your Naha trip, take an excursion to one of the nearby islands or join an organized trip with fun activities around the waters of Okinawa.

Here are some options for day trips around Naha.

1. Tokashiki Island

Only 35 minutes from Naha, Tokashiki Island is the largest of the Kerama Islands , which is part of Keramashoto National Park . The tropical island is known for its white sand beaches, crystal “Kerama blue” water and magnificent viewpoints.

Here is a 1-day itinerary for exploring Tokashiki Island on your own:

• After arriving at Tokashiki Port, take the local bus (￥400) to the end at Aharen Enchi . There are several lookout points.
• Walk to Aharen Beach , a white sand beach and enjoy some water activities.
• Follow Sondo Aharen Road to Tokashiku Beach and snorkel with sea turtles.
• Hike back to the port via Sondo Otani Road . Along the way, see Taiwanese cherry blossom trees , West and East Lookouts, and the Site of Mass Suicide .
• Continue on Sondo Seinen no le Road back to Tokashiki Port.
• Browse around Tokashiki Village before getting the ferry back to Naha.

How to get to Tokashiki Island: take either Marine Liner Tokashiki high-speed boat or a regular ferry from Tomari Port to Tokashiki Island . Choose the high-speed boat (￥2,630 one-way and ￥4,910 roundtrip; 35 minutes) because it is faster than the ferry (￥1,790 one-way and￥3,210 roundtrip; 70 minutes). High-speed boat leaves Tomari Port at 9am at dock 7B and returns at 5pm at Tokashiki Port . Reserve a ticket in advance between May to October or buy one at the counter at Tomari Port.

2. Zamami Island

Zamami Island is known for its white sand beaches, “Kerama blue” water and a gorgeous sunset. It is also part of the Kerama islands, and it’s reachable by a 50-minute high-speed ferry ride from Naha.

When you spend a day on Zamami Island, here is what you can do:

• Visit Furuzamami Beach and rent equipment to snorkel, scuba dive, or standup paddle board .
• Hike up to Takatsukiyama Observation Deck and see a panoramic view of the Kerama archipelago.
• See humpback whales return to warm Zamami during the winter season.
• Rent a bicycle and cycle around the hilly island.
• Take a local boat to Aka Island .

How to get to Zamami Island: take the Queen Zamami high-speed ferry (￥3,200 one-way and￥6,080 roundtrip; 50 minutes) from Tomari Port to Zamami Port . The high-speed boat leaves Tomari Port at 9am at dock 7A and returns at 4:50pm at Zamami Port . Reserve a ticket in advance between May to October, or buy one at the counter at Tomari Port.

3. Organized day tours from Naha

If you are not keen on self-guided day trips, there are many organized day tours that you can join while you are in Naha.

Many of them can be booked locally, but if you are going during high season (i.e. summer), you might want to secure a spot on a tour so you don’t miss out on a fantastic trip.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Snorkelling around Kerama Islands – see tropical fish and coral reefs in the crystal-clear waters of Kerama Islands National Park from April to October.
• Diving trip around Kerama Islands – learn how to dive on this full-day excursion in Kerama Islands National Park.

What to eat in Naha Okinawa

Okinawan cuisine differs from  typical Japanese cuisine  due to its unique geographical location and influences from China, South East Asia and the US. So even if you typically eat Japanese food, you must try the local food in Okinawa and see what the fuss is about because it is so good!

I have a food guide to eating in Okinawa , but here is a quick summary of food you must try in Naha:

• Okinawa Soba  – Okinawan noodle soup made with wheat noodles, fish cakes and pork belly
• Taco Rice  – Tex-Mex ingredients (ground beef, lettuce, cheese, tomato) on top of rice
• Goya Champuru  – Okinawan stir-fry with bitter gourd/melon
• Okinawa Agu Pork  – primary pork breed in Okinawa
• Okinawa Onigiri  – spam and egg Japanese rice ball
• Beni imo  – purple sweet potato
• Umibudo  – a type of edible seaweed aka “sea grapes”
• Okinawa ice cream  – try local flavours like  Okinawan salt cookies ,  Shikuwasa sherbet ,  Beni imo , and  Ryukyu Royal Milk Tea

Where to eat in Naha Okinawa

Traditional Okinawan food in Naha is served in local diners, izakaya restaurants and other food places. Just make sure to check the hours of operation  before you go. Noodle shops and some restaurants open between 10am-3pm while many izakaya restaurants only open after 5pm and stay open until late.

If you want to watch a show during dinner, some touristy izakaya restaurants have live singing performances during dinner service . Typically, there are two rounds of performances each night. Look for signs at the entrance of izakaya restaurants like the one below.

If you only have a few days in Naha, try one of these places. They are some of my favourite places to eat in Naha.

• Okinawa Soba Eibun  – a very popular noodle shop serving Okinawa soba
• Shuri Soba  – go early and try Okinawa soba with noodles or without
• Nuchigafu  – instagrammable set lunches and dinners serving Okinawan cuisine
• Yunangi  – homey izakaya restaurant that is open for lunch and dinner
• Dachibin  – best izakaya restaurant in a renovated Japanese-style house. Surcharge is applicable
• Pork Tamago Onigiri  – they sell spam and egg onigiri and variations of this classic Okinawan snack
• Blue Seal  – Okinawa’s most popular ice cream brand. Find one of many shops in Naha

i will be spend on Okinawa in Feb… without car. Good transportation… But did you walk or take a bus to Zakimi Castle Ruin from Yomitan Pottery Village (Yochimun no Sato)?

Hi Ng Bee Hwa, Yes I walked between Zakimi Castle and Yomitan Village. It is a 30-minute walk but leisurely. There is also a bus but I just checked on Google Maps that it comes every 2 hours. It’s not frequent so walking might be a better option. Hope this helps! happy travels!

I wonder if there is any transportation to stay for a week near one of the beaches like Manza or Zampa Beach to have the possibility to spend some time on the beach after coming back from the trips. Hi Barbara, Aw thanks so much! From Okinawabus website, there are limousine buses to both places. For Manza Beach, the limo bus goes to ANA Intercontinental Manza Beach Resort. For Zampa Beach, the limo bus goes to Grand Mercure Hotel. When you are in Naha, go to the info centre at Naha Bus Terminal and confirm. They are very helpful and speak English. Enjoy your trip!

I think the main area of Naha is so amazing that everyone should see it first. 4-Day Okinawa Japan Road Trip Guide: A complete itinerary to experience the best of Naha Island

Want to experience the best Japan has to offer in a laid back tropical island setting? That's exactly what you'll get from a visit to Okinawa. From delicious local cuisine and rich cultural history to cliffside coastlines surrounded by the clearest of blue waters. Experience the best of Okinawa in 4 days with our complete road trip itinerary guide with maps.

Getting to Naha, Okinawa from Singapore:

One of the reasons we added Okinawa to our travel list is that it is only a direct flight away from Singapore. Within 5 hours we reached Naha airport thanks to Jetstar Asia.

Renting a Car: Getting around Naha, the main island of Okinawa:

As there are many stunning coastal drives along Naha, we highly recommend renting a car to make the most of the visit. Outside the airport, are stands of shuttles offering to take passengers on the 10-minute drive to the nearest car rental company. We rented our car via Budget, pre-booked on Expedia. We recommend a good internet connection to be able to use Google Maps as well (as our GPS was mostly in Japanese).

The best time to visit Okinawa:

We visited during Late January and were treated to 20-25c weather, clear skies and limited crowds. We originally booked to visit in August the previous year, however, delayed our trip due to typhoons.

Where to stay in Naha:

We opted for a stay at the Harbourview hotel in Naha City, which included valet parking for a small daily rate. This location was an easy drive for most of our day trips and a short walk to restaurants in the evening. There are many accommodation options across Naha island though and with a car all are easily accessible which can be seen here.

Our Complete 4 Day Road Trip Itinerary around Okinawa:

Day 1 route: naha - cape manzamo - cape maeda - cape zanpa - america village - naha.

Cape Manzamo:

The sun warmed our backs as the light breeze swept across the calm ocean on a 25c clear day. We wandered past tropical green trees as we approached the famous Manzamo coastline, tour groups were in toe with this site drawing a crowd. We waited for a clearing between groups to get our perfect view of the elephant-shaped rock pushing out into the clear turquoise waters below.

Izakaya Lunch Stop - Cape Manzamo

We turned south along the stunning coastal drive for a further 20 mins towards Cape Maeda. Just 5 minutes past Manzamo, along the coastal highway, we stopped at a small Japanese house converted into an Izakaya restaurant (See stop 2 on our map). Here we sat on tatami mats and floor level and had our first taste of Okinawa’s famous Sea Grape and Soba. We wouldn’t have spend more than $30 for this feast.

Cape Maeda:

Upon arrival at Cape Maeda, the car park was filled with Diving and Snorkeling groups, this spot is famous for swimming in the blue cave. It’s possible to book a tour on the spot. We opted to walk along the rocky cliffs and take in the view, free from other tourists.

Cape Zanpa:

Continuing south, our next stop was Cape Zanpa lighthouse. For a $4 entry fee and 130m climb be treated to some spectacular aerial views of the Okinawa coastline. The views of the water below offered more shades of blue than we could count.

Here we stopped to try another famous Okinawan delicacy - Blue Seals local sweet potato purple ice cream. It was creamy and delicious.

The American Village:

Our final stop south on the way back to Naha was the American Village. Filled with souvenir shops, restaurants and vintage American memorabilia.

Evening in Naha City - Kokusai Dori

After reaching Naha City we walked 10 minutes from our hotel down to the bustling street of Kokusai Dori. A popular tourist strip, filled with restaurants. Here, we got our first taste of the Okinawa brewed Orion Beer, a must-try during your visit.

Day 2 Route: Naha - Kouri Island - Churaumi Aquarium - Naha Makishi Market

Kouri Island:

Experience 50 shades of blue driving across Japan's second-longest bridge connecting to a remote island. Driving to this island was a sight in itself not to be missed. Upon arrival, we stopped via the coast to walk along the water and take it all in. We spent the full morning at Kouri, here are our highlights:

Stop for lunch at the Kouri Shrimp food truck:

We loved the ocean views over a low-cost Japanese-Hawaiian fusion lunch of garlic shrimp, beef, rice and seaweed fries.

Take a buggy tour to the top of the Ocean Tower:

We next jumped on a cute buggy tour taking us to the views at the top of the Ocean Tower. On the way down we stopped to taste the soft pumpkin cookies made on-site, of which we brought several boxes home, these were the perfect souvenir!

Chuarium Aquarium:

From Kouri island, we headed south to Chuarium Aquarium, located again along a stunning coastline of clear blue waters. The highlight here was the large tank of manta's whale sharks.

Naha City Makishi Markets:

After a long day, we headed back to Naha to end the night with a shop and dinner around Naha City's Makishi Markets.

Day 3 Route: Naha - Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters - Umikaji Terrace - A&W - Okinawa World & Gyokusen-do Cave - Valley of Gangala - Naha

The Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters (WW2 Museum & tunnels) - Tomigusuku:

Just 15 minutes from our hotel was the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters from World War Two. We experienced the war history walking through meters of underground tunnels once critical in the battle for Okinawa.

Umikaji Terrace & the Hammock Cafe:

Also located in Naha City is the coastal area of Umikaji terrace, filled with waterfront restaurants. Here we stopped for a morning coffee at the Instagrammable Hammock Cafe.

Lunch at A&W:

Seemingly the most famous fast food restaurant in Okinawa is A&W. We made a lunch stop to try the juicy burgers and fries.

Okinawa World and Gyokusen-do Cave:

We spent our afternoon at Okinawa World. The highlight here was the 2km Gyokusen-do cave developed hundreds of thousands of years ago and taking more than 20 minutes to walk through. We also enjoyed some local culture here, watching a traditional drumming and dance show, as well as visiting some pineapple plantations.

Valley of Gangala:

Directly across the road from Okinawa World is the Valley of Gangala, a lush green valley of a once collapsed limestone cave. Walking tours are available hourly through the area, which can only be accessed as part of a tour. We managed to catch the last English tour of the day departing at 4 pm.

Day 4 Route: Exploring Naha City's Surrounds - Shurijo Castle - Tsuboya Pottery Village - Fukushuen Park - Dinner in an old Japanese Residence

Shurijo Castle:

Our first stop of the day was exploring the remnants of this world heritage castle and grounds while enjoying a view over Naha city.

Tsuboya Pottery Village:

We then shopped for some locally-made souvenirs at Tsuboya Pottery Village. We Took time to wander the cute streets & stop for the local Bukubuku tea, made from rice (Andrew also made a new friend).

Fukushuen Park:

Our last stop of the day was wandering the traditional gardens of Fukushuen Park.

Dinner at Komiya Shokudo Japanese Residence:

Finally we enjoyed dinner in a traditional Japanese house for under $30 for 2 people.

There are enough attractions to go around in Okinawa, and tourists can look forward to a loaded itinerary with some of the top adventures in Japan . Whether looking to sample local culinary offerings or experience Japanese hospitality up close, check out the top things to do in Okinawa.

Check Out Kokusai-dori

As one of the more notable streets in Okinawa, Kokusai-dori is a street that stretches 1.6 kilometers through the city center. This is where many tourists and locals congregate, often being a space where markets, food, and entertainment are intertwined.

Many visitors here also say there are good souvenir options to bring home from the country, so if you're after a last-minute gift, you want to head to Kokusai-dori. Much like any public street, people can walk around and shop throughout the week, with shops and businesses closing at varying times.

• Kokusaidori Street is located right in central Naha.
• The street stretches from the Naha Bus Terminal to Makishi Station on the Okinawa Monorail.
• "Regular" business hours are between 9 AM and 5 PM, although this may not always ring 100% true.

Kouri Bridge View Point

For anyone after beautiful views of the water and city, heading over to Kouri Bridge View Point is a great idea. Here, people can experience the longest toll-free bridge with a span of over one mile in Japan, as well as check out the surrounding nature areas.

Much of Okinawa is rather green and scenic, so from this bridge: that is multiplied. The Kouri Bridge View Point is for pedestrians to enjoy the sights of the city, all while being projected in the sky. It's also worth noting this bridge connects two islands, making it an essential way of travel for many locals.

Stroll Through Peace Memorial Park

One thing to do in Okinawa, Japan, is stroll through the Peace Memorial Park , a community space dedicated to almost a third of their population in WW2 that was lost, caused by both sides. This memorial park feels incredibly tranquil to many, and it's a nice place to pay respects to those who lost their lives during the war.

The city created this space to bring hope and peace to those affected by violence and heartache, making it a standout destination on our list. One thing to note, however, is that visitors are recommended to stay quiet and not make too much of a scene while here. Although it is a park, you'll need to treat it like a memorial as well.

Buy Goods At The Makishi Public Market

There are restaurants and lounges within the airport where you can enjoy all kinds of food, drinks, and relaxing services. • Interterminal movements at Narita International Airport are aided by the airport courtesy shuttle. The transfer time between Terminals1 and 2 is about 10min and between Terminals 2 and 3 is about 3min. If you choose to walk between terminals 2 and 3, it will take about 15min.

38 things to do and eat for 5D4N in Okinawa, Japan: A Self-Drive Road Trip Itinerary

Looking for an island getaway? Besides the ever-popular Bali, Phuket , and Krabi, the next best alternative is approximately five hours away from Singapore. The Okinawan islands are surrounded by the East China Sea and Pacific Ocean, boasting clear emerald blue waters all around, with a plethora of snorkelling and diving sites that are, as of yet, not as over-populated.

Managed to snag cheap tickets to Okinawa, Japan and wondering what to see, eat, and do? Here's our road trip itinerary on Okinawa that you can follow while planning your next trip! For those who don't intend to drive, read on as this post also provides what you can do on your next trip (even without driving)!

When is the best time to visit Okinawa?

Okinawa is a great destination all-year-round . In summer , you'll be greeted with the azure blue skies and lots of opportunities for water activities. As Okinawa is surrounded by the sea, the temperatures in the hottest summer months (August and September) rarely exceed 35 degrees celsius. In autumn , the weather is cool while still having the warm rays of the sun shining on you. Walk through the scenic beaches and various parks comfortably with a windbreaker. In winter , the temperatures also don't get overly cold with a comfortable average of 17 degree celsius. There won't be snow in winter, and should you be looking for winter wonderland, head up instead to Sapporo where you'll find the famed powder snow! Okinawa is also the place to catch the first cherry blossoms in Japan, with the first expected bloom to be sometime in late January.

That being said, travellers should note that they should expect heavy precipitation should they travel within the months of May to late June. Typhoon season is between August and September and there may be more flights delayed due to the weather conditions.

How to get to Okinawa, Japan?

Previously, there weren't any direct flights from Singapore to Okinawa and heading there requires a stopover. Now, Jetstar flies direct to Okinawa from Singapore and tickets are affordably priced. We got our last minute tickets for approximately $280 round trip but we've heard many others scored even cheaper tickets during the sales period.

How to get around Okinawa, Japan?

Be it via public transport , group bus tour , a private car charter , or a self-drive, Okinawa is accessible to all kinds of travellers. Should you be looking to go on diving or snorkelling trips, many tour companies do arrange for shuttle services from your hotel or a convenient pick up point in Naha itself.

For us, we preferred our own-time-own-target spontaneous travels and decided to drive ourselves around Okinawa. Since driving within the Okinawa main island is similar to driving in Singapore plus all the perks of fewer cars, more gracious drivers, and free parking outside Naha, Okinawa is a destination that is perfect for a road trip for the entire family.

38 things to do and eat for 5D4N in Okinawa, Japan

Now that you are all set, let's go on to the 5D4N itinerary for Okinawa, Japan!

We flew Jetstar's red-eye flight an arrived in Okinawa at about 8am in the morning. Once you've touch down in Okinawa Naha Airport, head to grab your cars from either Luft Travel Car Rental , Toyota-Rent-a-Car , or Times Rental . We went with Times Rental as at the time of booking, they were the cheapest and there were more palatable car choices in the cheapest band.

At the Arrival Hall, there was no trouble looking for the Times Car Rental staff holding a placard. Even though we seriously just booked the car a day before our pickup, our names were quickly registered in the system and we then told to head over to take the shuttle bus outside the terminal . A yellow Times Car bus arrived quickly and brought us to the car rental company just minutes from the airport.

After all the various checks and administrative documents, we were off to go!

1. Breakfast at Sukiya

Before we head up north, we were famished after the flight and decided to make our first stop a food stop! We decided to head to the quintessential Japanese "fast food" chain, Sukiya. Sukiya serves quick Japanese dons, beef, pork, unagi, curry, and more. What's great are that many of the Sukiyas have a dedicated parking lot and are located right by the main roads.

What we did was to just key in Sukiya into our google maps and navigated ourselves to the nearest one! If you are a first timer to Japan, Sukiya should be in your list for a fuss-free and super affordable Japanese meal!

2. Stock up your supplies at a nearby convenience store!

After filling your stomachs, you may also want to first stock up on snacks and beverages before going on the long drive. There are several Family Mart s, Lawson s, and 7-11 s throughout Okinawa and you can simply pop in (almost like a drive-thru) to get your items before carrying onto your journey.

These convenience stores also often have a restroom for customers to relieve themselves. How convenient! :)

3. Cape Hedo

Once that is all done, you are now extremely prepared for your road trip. We would usually advise the first stop to be the furthest destination should you be making one entire round. Cape Hedo is located all the way up in the northern region of Okinawa.

Here, you should take the Okinawa Expressway , pay the toll to shorten your travel time by half, avoid multiple traffic lights, and go on faster speeds at up to 80 km/h. How the toll system works is that when entering the toll road, you should head towards the General Toll Lanes (usually located on the left hand side of the entrances or exits, demarcated in GREEN) and grab a ticket from the automated ticket dispenser. Before exiting, again, you should drive towards either the left-most lane or the middle lane and pass the ticket to the tollbooth attendant. A fee would be shown on the screen to the right of your car and you should pay it by cash. Credit cards should be accepted as well but cash is king in Okinawa.

Upon reaching Cape Hedo, be prepared to walk a little to the northern-most point. Once there, you'll definitely see how the long drive is worth it! The waves crashing onto the shore and the azure blue waters, ahhhh...

4. Kouri Island - Kourio Bridge

Thereafter, it'll be an hour drive back towards Nago on Highway 58 and to Kouri Island. You'll possibly have to first go onto Yagaji Island and then to the entrance of the Kourio Bridge. Before going onto the bridge, there's a little parking lot where you can stop to really see the beautiful bridge before driving on top of it!

5. Kouri Island - Kouri Shrimps

By then, your stomachs must be rumbling as it would be past lunch time! Head over to Kouri Shrimps for your lunch. Kouri Shrimp is a Hawaiian restaurant that serves marinated shrimps with rice. They started as a food truck selling takeaways at the beach. Now, they have a restaurant area with dedicated parking area. Parking for Kouri Shrimps is actually located a little further down from the restaurant. There will be a staff standing outside to direct you to their dedicated parking lot. Otherwise, follow the signs! The parking lot is located about a 2-minute walk away.

This little joint is by no means cheap as each meal costs upwards of 1000yen. To order, head all the way to the top counter. There are 4 choices - original (1000 yen), spicy (1200 yen), butter (1300 yen), and mix (1400 yen). You can also add on beef slices (500 yen) should you want more meat.

We tried the original one to save some moolahs and it was amazing! The shrimps were nicely fried and drenched in some kind of a garlic sauce. It has a slight tangy flavour which really brings out the freshness of the seafood. The rice, too, was light and fluffy and some of the shrimp sauce was also poured over the top.

Besides the shrimps, they also serve acai bowls and drinks. A good budget tip is to skip the drinks from the restaurant as there was a vending machine next to it! We didn't know and ordered the Sikwasa (Okinawa sparkling lime juice), paying around 350 yen for it! (Sigh!) The drink was good though, even though it was really a tad expensive for a little cup.

You can order the take-out and bring it along to the Kouri beach to eat or dine at the terrace in the restaurant. The view of the Kourio Bridge from the terrace was beautiful really, definitely worth the more pricey food!

6. Kouri Island - Kouri Ocean Tower

The next attraction on Kouri Island is the Ocean Tower. Up here, you'll get a splendid view of the entire island plus the oceans. Do note for drivers that the path up are narrow and rocky, drive slowly so as to not miss any turns given by your navigation device.

Parking is available right below the ocean tower where you can also purchase your tickets. The ticket for adults cost 800 yen, 600 yen for high school students, 300 yen for elementary school students, and free for pre-schoolers. Included in the price of your ticket is an automated buggy ride from the carpark up to the tower. Here, you'll listen to some information (in your preferred language) about Kouri Island and the tower. The ride also goes through a little man-made garden, with mini-waterfalls, giving you a splendid view of the Kourio Bridge too!

Honestly, after seeing the view at Kouri Shrimps, you may just want to skip the Kouri Ocean Tower as it is rather similar. The only difference is that for families with children, you’ll have a lot more to do here!

7. Kouri Island - Heart Rocks

One of the more compelling reason to head to Kouri Island was to see these two hearts in the Okinawa Waters, created after several years of erosion by the waves.

But what many don’t tell you about getting there isn’t that it is seriously quite a trek! Since we initially thought we could simply drive straight to the bridge and take a short path over, it wasn’t there the case! Without proper shoes, we trek through narrow paths, between long grass, and climbed down rocks to get there...

This is definitely not the activity for the faint-hearted!

After the somewhat treacherous trek, we finally arrived at the beach area. Here, the waters are calm and you’ll really get to see the heart rocks up close. The only downside is that even with the trek, there were quite a number of travellers climbing up the rock, trying to take as many photographs as they can so as to fully make use of all their effort to get there!

Nonetheless, it is still a worthy stop on your road trip as you’ll get to experience something different you won’t get in the city!

8. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Head quickly over to the Churaumi Aquarium to see the whale sharks and manta rays. Do be warned though that this venue is possibly the most crowded of all attractions in Okinawa. You may then wish to get your tickets beforehand online and collect it at Naha Airport.

Alternatively, you may just want to grab a Main Island Enjoy Pass Okinawa to save on the entrance tickets for various attractions in Okinawa. This pass is definitely recommended for families as it includes not just the Aquarium, but the Okinawa World, Pineapple Park, Okinawa Fruits Lands and more!

Right after the entrance to the aquarium, you’ll be greeted to a touch pool where you’ll get to touch the various star fish under the supervision of the aquarium staff.

Thereafter, walk through the various tanks to see colourful fishes, coral reefs, and other aquatic species!

When you are there, be sure to stay for the Whale Shark Feeding! It is a wonder to see them gulping down their food while appearing to be “standing” in the waters! There are two feeding times for the whale sharks daily at 3.00pm and at 5.00pm. Take that into consideration when you plan your visit! For those who are looking at going in the morning, you could also watch the manta rays feeding at 9.30am.

We watched the the 5.00pm feeding and then rushed out of the Churaumi Aquarium and to the Okichan Theatre, where the dolphin show is held at 5.30pm. Entrance to the Okichan Theatre is free so it is definitely a must-see.

After the aquarium and if you still have some energy left, walk around the Ocean Expo Park and towards the clear emerald waters!

9. Try Blue Seal Ice Cream

If you’re feeling slightly peckish, head to the Cafe near the carpark to grab a snack or try the famed Blue Seal Ice Cream!

Blue Seal Ice Cream has an interesting history. Initially created to boost the morale of American troops in Okinawa, they are now found all over the island. You’ll find them in convenience stores, in cafes, or some as a stand-alone gelato bar.

We’ve tried them all and found that the one that we had at the cafe near the aquarium tasted the best! It was creamy, milky, had a slight bit of gelato-like stickiness... Ah... From then on, we made it a point to have at least one scoop every day.

Our favourite flavour is the Okinawan Salt Biscuit . It tastes almost like salted caramel with little bits of cookies. Other noteworthy flavours are the Beni-imo (Okinawan Purple Sweet Potato), Mint , and Pistachio .

10. Feast at A&W!

Even though there's now an A&W opened in Singapore, you may still wish to place this in your itinerary. A&W in Okinawa is just like the ones in America, where they feature a drive-thru concept plus a little diner. Sitting at the diner-style seats really brought us back to the United States !

Even though it is slightly further away from our accommodation at the aquarium, the drive was worth it! The food was amazing; we had their burger and hotdogs, not forgetting the famed root beer float!

Stay: Mr. Kinjo in Motobu

We were extremely tired after everything and was so glad to head to Mr. Kinjo in Motobu . The location of the property was great since it had a Aeon supermarket nearby where we could head to grab groceries. It is also located by the coast, giving you a beachfront accommodation minus the restrictive prices!

We paid slightly under 3,500 yen (about $45 sgd) for a double room that was clean, with a mini-kitchenette, washing machine, bathtub, and even a balcony. Some rooms had a balcony facing the ocean which was splendid! Do note that the price is during the off-peak season so expect a hike during the peak summer and autumn season!

The only downside to this is that it is simple so no other facilities are within the accommodation except vending machines at the bottom. So if you're looking for swimming pools, breakfast, or any form of room service, none of them are provided. Also, we had to hold our nostrils when we enter and exit at the ground floor of the lift lobby as it was located close to the rubbish chute. This doesn't affect the smell of our rooms so that was fine.

Parking at Mr.Kinjo is not free either, we had to pay an additional 1,000 yen for overnight parking. After factoring that into the cost of our stay, we would still recommend this fuss-free hotel / hostel chain.

For those who have a lot more budget, go for the oceanfront resorts located in Motobu like Hotel Orion Motobu Resort and Spa which lies close to the Okinawa Ocean Expo Park and the Emerald Beach or Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort on the other side of the Expo Park.

Start your day early as there's lots to cover! First up is the most important meal of the day - breakfast!

11. Breakfast at Hotto Motto

Hotto Motto is a bento take-away chain and is opened early at 9.00am. Since we started our day early, not much is opened. We decided to try this chain since it was located close to our accommodation and we kept walking past it during our trip to Busan .

Prices at Hotto Motto was wallet-friendly but because they were a take-out chain, there weren't that many seats. Most consumers purchase bento as to-go or eat them in their cars parked outside. Because we were early, we managed to find a small table outside and had our meal there.

12. Nago Theme Parks

There are a variety of “themed parks” in Nago that are worth visiting, especially for family with children. We recommend only going to just ONE as they are rather similar and you would likely be very bored should you visit them all. The theme parks in Okinawa aren't the amusement parks you are familiar with. Instead they are more of an attraction that is themed .

Nago Pineapple Park features Nago pineapples that are grown on the farm. You’ll take a tram ride and a cart ride to learn more about pineapples. The indoor garden trail also allows you to see several colourful flowers and plants. The best part is at the end where you’ll get to taste all kind of pineapple produce - from tarts to cakes, they have them all. The best is eating a freshly sliced pineapple on stick!

They used to offer customers fresh pineapple but when we were there they changed it to pineapple juice due to a shortage of pineapples!😞

Okinawa Fruits Land is similar to the Pineapple Park but with a variety of fruits. For those who do not enjoy pineapple can consider going to the Fruits Land instead. Here, unlike the Pineapple Park you don't exactly get to see the fruits but will learn about them through quizzes and stories. There is also a little bird sanctuary where you get to feed the birds. Okinawa Fruits Land is located right next to the pineapple park and tickets are also included in the Enjoy Pass ! So those who get the Enjoy Pass may just want to quickly pop in for a quick tour.

13. Orion Happy Park

Orion Happy Park hosts free beer factory tour to allow you to learn how Orion Beer is made. To join the tour, you'll have to make a reservation online in advance. Otherwise, there would likely not be a slot for you (we tried!). The tour is conducted in Japanese only and includes 2 beers (yes, for free!) and some snacks. Children are welcome to join the tour too and instead of beer they would get a soft drink.

Should you not get a slot like us, feel free to still visit and take a look at the factory. You can walk through it on your own and read the information guide along the way.

14. Lunch at Ramen Danbo

After all that visiting, it would be around noon and you would be famished. We decided to have Japanese Ramen at Danbo after seeing long queues at the store when we first drove by.

When we there just before lunch and thankfully didn't have to queue to get our ramen. We chose the Original and the Spicy Ramen. Besides choosing the flavour of your ramen, you'll also get to customise a whole load of other stuff like how thick you want your broth to be, the thickness and doneness of the ramen.

We enjoyed Ramen Danbo very much because of its thick broth. We also like the miso-type broth more than that of Ichiran Ramen.

15. Busena Marine Park

Busena Marine Park is located within Busena Terrace Resort . When driving, don't miss the turn and turn straight into the resort. There will be a guarded entrance and you will just have to let the guard know that you're visiting the Marine Park, he will instruct you to the carpark for the park.

Parking for the Marine Park is quite a distance away from the pier and the tower but there will be a complimentary shuttle for customers who purchase the tickets. Charge for the Glass Bottom Boat and the Underwater Observatory is as follows but it is definitely more worth it to purchase both!

The Glass Bottom Boat experience was terrific. The glass and water was really clear such that you get to see the colourful coral and fishes. Here, the captain will take the boat out to the deeper part of the waters where there is an abundance of aquatic life and corals. We saw the nemo clown fish and starfishes that were in the ocean.

Children can also feed the fishes and see them quickly swim across the boat!

The Underwater Observatory unfortunately was quite a bummer. The water was murkier and the portholes were far too small to see much. Also, all the children in the underwater tower would crowd and hog the portholes and we didn't get much of a chance.

Despite that, we still feel that Busena Marine Park is worth coming too as there are a lot less tourists here as buses don't bring tour groups here. You could also head to the beachfront where there are much less people and go on banana boat rides. If you have more budget, stay in the oceanfront rooms in the luxurious Busena Terrace Resort !

Otherwise, you could also try this other Glass Bottom Boat Experience that is also available for those who wish to base themselves in Naha.

16. Diamond Beach

You can't visit Okinawa without heading to a beach. The Diamond Beach is a small beachfront that boasts soft white sand and clear emerald waters. Since not many people visit this public beach, you'll feel like you own the entire area.

Better still, there is a little cafe situated next to the beach where you can grab a cuppa after snorkelling or playing in the water!

17. Souvenir Shopping at Okashigoten

After relaxing at the beach, head for some Souvenir Shopping at Okashigoten. Here, you'll find all sorts of goodies that you can buy as gifts for your friends and families. Like most Japanese souvenir and sweets store, there are also lots of free samples to try!

18. Cape Manzamo

In the late afternoon, it is time to explore the various Capes as you head further south. Cape Manzamo is an oceanfront stroll that features a Cape that looks like an elephant trunk. Here, parking can be quite annoying as it is located about 500 metres away from the start of the trail. We cheated by parking at the reserved lots since we knew that we wouldn't take long. True enough, we went onto the trail and got back out after taking photographs and admiring the ocean in just 20 minutes.

19. Grab a snack at Onna no Eki Nakayukui Market

The Onna no Eki Nakayukui Market is almost like a rest stop with several food and beverages outlets and a small souvenir store. Here, we tried the best-tasting Tebichi Karaage (fried pork knuckle drenched in a vinegar sauce) as well as the Okinawan brown sugar bread . At the market there is also a seafood stall selling fresh Okinawa seafood like the sea grapes.

Here, almost everything is in Japanese so it is really a market for the locals!

20. Cape Maeda

Cape Maeda is another important Cape as it is the entrance to many of those who would like to go to the Blue Cave. Here, there are just so many companies that offer snorkelling and diving packages to the famed Blue Cave. If you didn't plan to do so initially, you could walk into one of the dive shops to enquire about the packages. They will provide you with all the gear you'll need.

Otherwise, if you have brought your own snorkel gear, you may just want to head snorkelling on your own. Do note that although the water near Cape Maeda isn't all that deep, it is still advisable to go for a tour with experienced guides as afterall, you are swimming in the ocean and the underwater currents are real!

If you prefer to confirm your slots for the snorkelling and diving earlier, book them online !

Other than these water activities, Cape Maeda is also offers a short trail that gives you a great view of the ocean plus being in nature. Best part? There wasn't anyone around!

21. Cape Zanpa Lighthouse

The last cape is Cape Zanpa where there is a little lighthouse. Visitors can go up the lighthouse but as we arrived late, we were happy to just take photographs with it. Right outside the little park area, close to the Ninja Museum, there is also a giant Shisa (Japanese lion statue) you can take photographs with!

22. Aeon Mall Okinawa Rycom

Our last stop of the day was to the large Aeon mall. With a mix of indoor and outdoor shopping, we liked that there was a variety of international and local brands. Parking is free here (Yippee), and there were many lots to spare! We explored the mall and had dinner there till it closed at 10pm.

There were just so many choices at the mall and we couldn’t decide! On the third and fourth floor, there was a huge food court with a vast selection of food.

We recommend Ikinari Steak if you like big slabs of beef. We previously tried it in Tokyo and loved it!

23. Feast on conveyor belt sushi at Kura Sushi

We were so glad we had dinner at Kura Sushi. We arrived just before the dinner crowd yet still had to wait for a good 10 minutes before getting our seats. At Kura Sushi, don’t just wait foolishly with the rest of the crowd but go straight for the queue machine! Although everything is in Japanese, there was a helpful Multi-lingual guide pasted on the wall in front to guide you. Key in your party size and select either the “counter” or “table” seats. Thereafter, you’ll be issued a number and just wait till your number‘s called out! They would call your number in Japanese so those who don’t understand should head outside where there will be a screen displaying the numbers.

Wondering if you should pick “counter” or "table" seats? From our experience, the queue for "counter" seats move much faster and should definitely be the choice during the peak period. The downside is that you won't be facing your travel buddy and will be sitting side by side during your meal. In comparison, table seats offer more privacy when dining but the queue for it is much longer. Prices essentially remain the same no matter which seat you choose!

What's great about Kura Sushi is that most of their sushi costs 100 yen, with some of the more premium ones being 200 yen and up. But in Japan, even sushi from a conveyor belt tastes awesome and we can't pass on the delicious Ikura Sushi that costs only 200 yen for a plate of 2 pieces!

Stay: Mr. Kinjo Inn Kadena

Like the previous Mr. Kinjo, this room was basic and clean, much newer and without the funky smell at the lift lobby! We paid 4,118 yen (about $54 sgd) for our night's stay and an additional 1,000 for the overnight parking. Overall, Mr. Kinjo Inn Kadena was an extremely comfortable stay for the price.

24. Explore American Village

Even though we were extremely tired the night before, we decided to drive to the American Village to see it lit up at night. As the shops were all closed when we arrived, we also returned on the next day to re-explore the American Village!

There are numerous interesting gift stores and retail store selling interesting one-off pieces. Here, you'll also have a plethora of food options and it is a place where we went to to have our breakfast.

25. Have breakfast at Pork Tamago Onigiri Honten

When in Okinawa, this is a snack that we simply shouldn't miss. You have onigiri all over Japan and you can often find them in convenience store or combinis. But these onigiris are often cold as they are stored in the fridge. At Pork Tamago Onigiri Honten , you can enjoy piping hot onigiri that looks almost like a sandwich or a burger. We tried the original one that comes with spam and tamago as well as a tonkatsu one which basically is the original topped with additional tonkatsu. Both were so good and we had to resist purchasing another one.

There are several outlets of Pork Tamago Onigiri Honten (including one at the Domestic Airport) but the one at the American Village faces the ocean and even have al fresco seating that overlooks the waters. It was truly a great way to start the morning!

26. If it isn't enough, go for more Tonkatsu at Matsunoya

Close to the American Village you'll find a Matsunoya, a quick-meal chain restaurant that serves delicious and affordable tonkatsu. We first discovered this when we were in Sapporo and knew that we just had to try. Thank goodness we stopped ourselves from getting additional onigiri.

27. Stateside Town

Stateside Town is a smaller scale version of American Village with a few specialty stores. Parking here is quite complex as the area is rather tight with just a few lots, so drivers do take note. If you park around the area, you would also be expected to pay for parking unless you purchase products from the stores.

28. Marvel at the Limestone Cave at Okinawa World (Gyoku Sendo)

Next up would be the long drive down south to Okinawa World. Parking lots at Okinawa World are limited and you will be directed to an open space car park located about 500 metres away. Alternatively, drivers can park at the Valley of Gangala to reduce their walking time.

When heading to Okinawa World, there will be quite a bit of walk so do wear a good pair of walking shoes. Unlike the Manjanggul Cave in Jeju , the cave is slightly more manageable as there are paved walking paths. You also do not need to walk in and back as there is another exit on the other end.

Walking through the cave feels like attending a Geography lesson come to life as we see the lime water slowing trickling down to form the structures and columns.

Tickets for the Okinawa World Cave comes along with the ticket for the Cultural Village as all visitors will have to walk through the village. You can purchase your tickets online here , or once again get the Main Island Enjoy Pass Okinawa .

At the end of the trail, don't forget to check out the Habu wine! Should you dare, you could also try some as they give out small cups as testers!

29. Have lunch at Joyfull Restaurant

After all that walking we wre famished. We initially planned to eat at our next stop, the Okinawa Outlet Mall but chanced upon Joyfull Restaurant. Here, you'll order your mains and can top up for a drink and soup bar. We ordered the cubed and sliced steaks with hamburg and it was surprisingly delicious. For the price, it was extremely great quality. We even were serve bread that were the softest and tastiest bread we've ever had!

30. Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa

Next up is time for outlet shopping! At Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa, it isn't the biggest outlet mall but you can stil snag some good finds. For instance, I managed to stock up on my Birkenstock sandals for just 2,500 yen ($30 sgd). There are a couple of international brands like Kate Spade, Coach, Puma, Adidas, et cetera and also a few Japanese brands.

The tax return counter is located on the 2nd floor and can get really crowded!

31. Umikaiji Terrace

The last stop of the day before returning the car before 7pm is the Umikaiji Terrace. There isn't that much here but simply a nice viewing deck of the ocean and lots of instagram-worthy photo spots.

Thereafter, we proceeded to top up our petrol (keep the receipts!) and then to return our car at Kokusai . Plan to give yourselves more time when driving within Naha. The traffic, especially during the peak hours is insane! We were stuck in start-stop traffic for about 40 minutes before arriving at our destination.

Our return of the car to Times Rental was extremely fuss-free. They checked our petrol and the receipts and gave us the all-clear thereafter! We chose to return the car as we did not want to drive within Naha city centre. Not only is parking more challenging and pricey, we did not want to constantly be in start-stop traffic.

32. Dinner at Gyu Kaku

After the extremely long and annoying jam, we decided to treat ourselves and head for a sumptuous yakiniku buffet at Gyu Kaku. The buffet was affordably priced at 2,480 yen per person (given how expensive Gyu Kaku is in Singapore). We had a huge selection of meats, vegetables, and cooked sides!

However, on hindsight, we couldn't really eat that much and should have gone for the ala-carte options instead.

33. Kokusai Street

Our day isn't over yet as there is still so much to explore at Kokusai Street . Besides the many shops and food and beverage options, there's also a giant Don Quixote that opens 24/7. Since Kokusai is the main shoping street in Naha, we also chose to base ourselves here for the next 2 nights!

After saving on accommodation the past two nights , we weren't quite able to save that much here. Rather, we chose convenience instead! Hotel WBF Art Stay Naha Kokusai is located just opposite Don Quixote and in-between two monorail stations.

What's special about WBF Art Stay was their all-day lounge , offering drinks for guests 24/7 including sake! Though we didn't quite utilise that amenity, we liked that we had that option!

34. Exploring Heiwa Dori

Heiwa Dori is Naha's covered shopping arcade with a plethora of shops and vendors that sell souvenirs and food. Should there be rainy weather, Heiwa Dori is great on the agenda as you'll be sheltered from the rain!

35. Makishi Public Market

Makishi Public Market used to be located on one of the alleyways of Heiwa Dori but have since moved to another site, several metres away from its older location. Here, you'll find a clean Japanese Market on the ground floor. You could also purchase fresh seafood from the first floor and head up to cook your produce on the second floor!

36. Shurijo Castle

Shurijo Castle is easy to get to with the Yui Railway from central Naha. Purchase a one-day pass for Naha's railway and buses to enjoy fuss-free transportation throughout the city. The castle grounds are beautiful and unlike the castle ruins outside Naha, you'll actually get to see the castle itself!

37. Naha Main Place

Naha Main Place is one of the bigger shopping mall in Naha that is easy to get to by the Yui Railway. Before heading back, you may just want to drop by for some shopping and to eat in the shopping mall.

38. Kokusai Street Food Village

Finally, we ended the day with feasting at the Kokusai Street Food Village. This area is still relatively unknown to most of the tourists so you'll find little stores with few seating area at this alley. However, some of the popular stores may be crowded such that you'll have to wait for your seats. We decided to have our meal by trying all of the Okinawan's special food.

Goya Champuru is a combination of fried eggs, bittergourd, with a little bit of meat or more often spam. Even though many are opposed to having bittergourd, surprisingly, there was little to no bitter taste. We also tried Okonomiya and some Takoyaki Balls ! All of them tasted great and we walked "home" with a full belly!

For us, this was the day of our early flight home. But for those who have an extra day, we do recommend you to go Island Hopping or take in some water activities. You simply can't leave Okinawa without being in its waters!

Navigating Okinawa is a breeze with these transportation options

There are plenty of options when it comes to getting around Okinawa. On the main island, public transportation such as monorail, buses, and taxis make traveling between destinations quick and convenient. But rental cars, bicycles, and motorcycles are a great way to get off the beaten path and explore at your own pace, especially on Okinawa’s more remote islands. Choose the option that best matches your itinerary.

The Yui Rail monorail connects 19 stations in around just 40 minutes, and is a quick and convenient way to travel from Naha Airport to popular sightseeing destinations. Discount tickets allow for unlimited rides in a specified time period, making it a great option for traveling on a budget.

Rental cars, motorcycles, and RVs are perfect for travelers who want to get off the beaten path and explore Okinawa at their own pace. There are many vehicle rental companies throughout the islands, offering competitive rental plans to suit your budget. Reserve online or in advance to make your trip as smooth as possible.

Whether cruising along the shore or zooming through the city, rental bicycles are a great way to explore the islands. Bicycle share services like ChuraChari make pick up and drop off easy and convenient, and many services offer motor-assisted options in addition to conventional bicycles.

Taxis are a quick, convenient, and plentiful option when traveling in Okinawa’s urban areas. In addition to standard taxis, shuttle taxis can be chartered for transport between the airport and hotels, and sightseeing taxis offer a unique way to tour the area. Availability is limited on remote islands, so be sure to confirm in advance.

Okinawa’s main island is served by a convenient bus network that connects popular destinations. Options include local buses, airport services, and tour buses. While some remote islands also have bus services, the situation varies from island to island.

A vast network of ferries connects the many beautiful islands that make up Okinawa. Most major routes between islands offer express services, which can be cheaper than flights. Please note that weather conditions may impact services and travel time.

Flights operate from Naha Airport to many of Okinawa’s remote islands.They connect visitors with the Miyako and Yaeyama islands in the south, the Daito Islands in the east, and Kume Island in the west.

Round 1 Ginowan City

A seven floor stadium for sports and entertainment

The Round 1 Sports and Entertainment Stadium is like a Dave and Busters - or if you must, a Chuck E. Cheese's - that's seven stories tall, includes 38 bowling lanes, 27 karaoke rooms, a dozen good-sized outdoor sports courts, three restaurants, and several snack bars. Its a great place to let off some steam and have fun for anyone of any age and at any time of the day.

Round 1 can't be missed as it towers above the roadway with a couple of gigantic bowling pins on the Route 58 Bypass just south of Tropical Beach and the Okinawa Convention Center. The top four floors contain Round 1's Spo-Cha all inclusive recreation area for a set fee depending on the amount of time desired. The Spo-Cha area includes table games, ball pits, roller skating, billiards, darts, a mechanical bull, mini motorcycle racing, karaoke rooms, video games, massage chairs, and about a dozen full or large sized tennis, football, golf and basketball courts; a party room is also available free of charge to throw a birthday party for guests that are inside the Spo-Cha. The lower three floors contain a large bowling alley, extensive Karaoke rooms to cater to any sized party, darts, arcade games and skill games for a set fee per activity.

Store hours Monday through Friday are 10:00 ~ 0:600 the following morning; Saturdays the open is at 09:00; Sundays and holidays the open is at 08:00; only the bottom three floors are open after midnight; and children must be out of Round 1 no later than 22:00. I visited at noon on a Friday for 90 minutes in the Spo-Cha which cost 1,500 yen. A membership card would have cut 200 yen off of the visit. Arriving early in the morning or very late at night would have cut the cost by one third. The actual cost during a visit varies widely based upon age, day, time of day, length of stay, and the possession of a membership card.
