Jewel Journey

"Jewel journey is an online puzzle game developed and published by Coolgames. This is a charming game that involves jewel matching and solving puzzles. A player has limited time to switch jewels horizontally and vertically to create groups of 3 or more similar kind; this is done by clicking on the jewels. To complete a level, a player has to move the broken key parts to the bottom of the screen to finish the master key within the time bracket. A help system, great tutorial, wonderful gameplay, and well-designed graphics act as a great option that makes the game interesting. This game also offers a museum and shop option that allows a player to access treasures and to buy new maps and jewels. This game offers players a fresh new take on the game of match-3 by permitting a player to travel to attractive lands such as Lost Atlantis, Aztec Ruins, Alaska Camp, and Grand Canyon by buying the map of the desired region or by inviting friends and have an opportunity to become an archeologist master while solving the amusing puzzles. If you need to be entertained and challenged, then I would recommend this game. It is a wonderful game."

Have you ever seen a cat that is crazy about diamonds? No? Then it is time to meet this special one in Marie's Jewel Journey game. Unfortunately, her love for sparkly things has led her into a trap, and now somebody has to help her escape.

This is not an easy job, so if you want to take up the challenge, then be ready to face traps and many other difficulties on the way. The main idea is to get rid of the diamonds that have the same color by clicking on them. But to make them disappear, there have to be more than three in a row; otherwise, nothing will happen, and the kitty will remain stuck up there.

How to play the game

There are many types of shiny diamonds, red, blue orange, but keep an eye out for those that are truly special, like the ones that have flashing arrows on them. They will make Marie walk along with them, and, this way, she will get closer to the gate that leads her home. There are also some icy ones that will make her glide away somewhere. Use all of them to your advantage, and you will surely take the kitty back home sound and safe.

There are also some nasty gems there if you can believe that. Who would have thought that some jewels might bring you a lot of trouble? Keep a distance from Edgar's Jewels, and they will do you no harm. Do not waste time trying to collect the metal ones, they cannot be taken from where they are, and they will make you only lose precious time.

At first, it might be a little bit hard to get things going, but as you play, you will surely figure it out. Use your brains to figure out which jewels should be collected first to manage to take them all in the end. This will provide you with some extra points.

Useful Tips and Tricks

Oh, did I mention that once you achieve a score of twenty thousand, you will receive straight away a bonus life? I think I might have forgotten. Anyway, everybody knows that cats have many lives, this is why you start the game with nine! This means that you have nine chances to get the cat across the place.

If you get stuck or run out of ideas, do not hesitate and press the restart button. Even though you will lose a life, the level will start again, and you will have the key to success.

Further on in the game, you will find other super fancy diamonds like the Prism ones, that can change their colors at random. Look closely, and you will find clear diamonds which are hiding away from plain sight. By the way, the bigger the chain of jewels, the better.

Collect as many of them at once for higher scores. Do not forget not to waste too much time thinking, because Marie has a limited time to get home; otherwise, she will surely be grounded for being late.

Have lots of fun playing with this one!

IN THE BEGINNINGPART THREE

INTRODUCTION

Fannie Zenolia, Carrie Ruth, (CAR RU), and Jewel Marie—journeysthat are interwoven like a quilt stitched together with gentle hands, square by square—there is soft yarn between each piece holdingtogether the fabric (and stories) of their lives.

"HANDMADE QUILTS"

"Take a look at all the colors of a handmade quilt. Examine theintricate stitches. In some ways, the body of Christ is like a quilt, lovingly stitched by the Lord. May we, like that quilt, be a thing ofbeauty to a watching world"! (Author Unknown)

"Mom Payne", (Ms. Fannie Z.) born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,1897—high cheek bones, amazing eyes that were gentle when she sawme skipping down the street to 173 Talmadge, fiery when she thoughtthat you had done something to one of her children. She was AfricanAmerican and Native American and when she spoke her rich heritageemerged. Her first "Girl Child" was (My mother), Carrie Ruth theLove Child of "Doc" Payne's "Mellow Sax."

"MEMORIES OF "MOM PAYNE"WRITTEN BY:JEWEL MCDONALDMASTER'S PROJECTWRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY—1989-EXCERPT

"The Sunday morning that she died, she was up getting ready to goto Church. (The old Gay Street was now Tabernacle Baptist Church).Mom Payne traveled to such places as Chicago, New Orleans and LosAngeles. (I understand more and more why I can't `STAY PUT')."

Instead, on this cold February morning, she took her last journey, andas our family writer, Irene wrote in her poem,"

"JUST HAD TO CATCH THAT MORNING TRAIN. SHELOVED TO TRAVEL THAT WAY YOU KNOW,"

WHEN EVER SHE WENT TO AND FRO, AND SO HER LASTTRAIN WAS ABOARD THAT GRAY AND SILVER TRAINWHICH CARRIED HER STRAIGHT TO THE HEAVENLYGATES."

"Precious Memories, how they linger, how they ever flood my soul." Thesewords are from a hymn learned in my childhood, written by JohnBraselton Fillmore Wright (1920). The memories are of a time inthe early 1950's, when a little girl, on a warm summer evening couldbe seen sitting on the old porch swing with her best friend andconfidante. As the movement gently swung them back and forth, hergrandmother's smooth, chocolate voice hums, "Work For The Night IsComing!" This hymn was written by Anna Louise Walker Coghill ,(1854) The scriptural reference for the song Is John 9:4 (I must workthe works of Him who sent me, while it is day, the night cometh, when noman can work).

I wondered why she hummed this hymn so often. Was she aware thatsoon some days would come that seemed so dark that she couldn'twork, couldn't sing her song, couldn't even pray.

Even though I know that you shouldn't have favorites, I always knewthat I was her favorite grandchild. Perhaps because I was first, and lookmuch like my mother, but more than likely because she knew that Iloved spending time with her.

I wonder Is it the fragrance of the lilac bushes outside my window oris it the memory of "Mom Payne" that seems to wrap me in its gentlearms.

THE GENEOLOGY

It was the beginning of Spring—March 10th, 1923, when Carrie Ruthwas born. Three older brothers rushed home from the cotton fields torock their new baby sister in her wooden cradle.

She was a sweet child with wise eyes. Did she already know that in afew years she would leave the sweet lullabies behind to sing a new song,a song that was sometimes happy, sometimes sad, but always hers.

Jewel Marie was born on a farm in Marianna, Arkansas—December31, 1936, maybe in the same room that her thirteen year old motherwas born. The cotton fields were bare, the winds were cold and frostwas in the air. One journey was ending and a new one was beginning. The old year was leaving and in a few moments everyone around theworld would be shouting, "Happy New Year". She was CAR RU'S firstgirl child. The colors were not yellow and green, (and both girl childrencried!)

(Fast Forward):

The year was 1989, Another March, in freezing weather we drove toMarianna, Arkansas to bury Mom's oldest brother, Uncle James, "ThePreacher,"

Was Carrie Ruth remembering her life of years ago as we crossedthrough Memphis, almost to her birthplace. Sometimes I wonder howmy life would have been had Daddy Payne not sent for my mom thatcold winter of 1941 to come to Columbus, Ohio, the "Promised Land".I met new cousins and realized that I would probably talk, think andlive like them. I'm happy that we met, I am so thankful to DaddyPayne for wanting us to live with him.

Jewel MarieThe Stolen Childhood:

How could the girl child tell her mom about what happens when she'snot home? Would it stop if she told her or would she get in trouble.

Maybe she knows about those hands that were always touching, butwas she afraid of the hands as well. Books became her windows to theworld. When she walked to the library alone, it was a time of comfortas the magic in the stories helped her through the times of sadness andpain. Jewel Marie, shielding her younger sisters from the sadness andpain.

Car Ru, a friend, a confidante, a mother, she can't find out what goeson while she is at work.

The oldest, she has to clean and cook dinner before mom getshome from a hard day on her knees cleaning houses in Bexley orWorthington.

The younger ones had chores, but they were sent outside to play wherethe scary eyes and touching hands can't find them.

Please God, maybe today will be the last day to be afraid to be alonein the house.

(The secret was finally told to someone who promised not to tell,"please don't tell", she said, Please don't tell). Car-Ru will be in danger:but when the hands stopped, I knew that "Mom" knew. "Oh God,please protect her from the hands".

Not until years later did we find out that the hands had startedtouching the younger sisters.

Now as I'm listening to "Lord I Wonder What Will Tomorrow Bring",and "The Lord Sits High and Looks Low" I finally realize why the Holyspirit guided Myrtle to give me those songs to sing. Even as a twentyyear old I knew as one of the lines says, "This is a mean world to try tolive in. Can't go no where, got to stay right here until I die."

Every since that day long ago on Talmadge, when I needed to get thescreen door opened and God opened it, I knew that He was my onlyfather. I never knew my biological father, never even knew his name. Ihad no one to hold and protect me.

I started walking and talking with the Lord when I was six or sevenyears old and so when I sang these songs, I already knew, "His helplesschildren he sees and He cares," "He knows everything you need".

The happiest times for the first girl child were the weekends which includedwalks to the library and the art museum alone. No eyes watching, nohands touching, no little sisters to take care of, no dinner to cook, Car Ruwas home. "Here's a quarter for ice cream or a candy apple. And be careful".

She understood that there was a need to just be alone—just the girlchild and her thoughts and dreams. Many years later, when secretswere revealed, tears were shed for a childhood that never was.)

Blonzetta Delores

Just a few months younger, but so different. Like her name, BlonzettaDelores, so unique.(My Sister, my friend, my confidante) We havenever met anyone else with her name. She has such a sweet, joyousspirit always able to help others smile through their tears. "Praise God"that she came into my life to provide so much joy through the years,

As a teenager, she had her own style and grace. She had the flair of amodel and "WOW" can she wear a hat. You can't describe her withoutmentioning the "Regalettes. These were her friends who had her samefree spirit and at East High School, they were recognized for theircreativity and ability to stand out in a crowd. They were all "Cute andPopular" so all the other girls wanted to be in there group, but you hadto have that special "Something" to belong.

This style and grace is also found in her home. The colors always spokeof her individuality. When she put them together, you thought of Parisand high fashion. We did convince her to go into her own decoratingbusiness, she could do beautiful flower arrangements and she didcatering for a few years, but the most special gift that she gave was ourfirst nieces and nephew to spoil and of course we did.

Irene Zenolia

Irene Zenolia, was the youngest of the three girls who sat on cardboardsuitcases as they crossed the Mississippi River on their way to the"Promised Land".

A few years ago, what a thrill it was to be in the audience to enjoyher first Original Play, "The Life of Ms. Ann Spencer", as it wassponsored by The Junior Guild of Columbus, Ohio and performed inthe perfect setting of a beautiful garden on a warm Sunday afternoon. That was just the beginning.

Today, years later, she has become a Literary Artist, having written severalshort stories, poems, eulogies and plays. Over her thirty year career, otherplays have been performed at churches and her stories are read in manyColumbus Public Schools and as far as Cobb County Georgia.

Recently she was nominated for induction into the Columbus ArtsCouncil!

We knew when she was a little girl that God had special plans for her.We were not surprised when she told of the call on her life to be aminister of the gospel. Even though she was led to receive degrees fromthe Trinity Lutheran, and Methodist Theological Seminaries, she hasbeen preaching through the way she lived all of her life.

173 TALMADGE STREETCOLUMBUS, OHIO1941

Faces are glued to the windows of the train that was taking us milesaway from the cotton fields of Arkansas. This became the first of manyrides on trains, buses, street cars, and air planes. Daddy Payne waswaiting for us at 173 Talmadge Street.

It was our first time having an upstairs and downstairs, but there wasno inside bathroom. It was very scary going to the out house at night.

Auntie Alma Grace, (Daddy Payne's sister) lived across the street at176 Talmadge with Uncle Smiley. I remember that Uncle Smiley wasthe first person that I had ever seen that didn't have any teeth. I lovedgoing across the street to sit in Auntie's warm kitchen and eat appleand peach cobbler.

Auntie Alma Grace had a great sense of humor: Once when we werein our early twenties and thirties, living on 374 Kendall Place; Thiswas also the time of a rare visit from GREAT-GRANDMOTHERALABAMA PAYNE: we were doing what we did when the family gottogether- PLAYING BID WHIST:

This included sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts and uncles. ALL OF ASUDDEN AUNTIE ALMA GRACE WAS AT THE TOP OF THESTAIRS, AND WE HEARD EVERYBODY, IS DOWN HERE!MAMA, COME ON DOWN! CARDs AND DRINKS WENTFLYING EVERYWHERE! UNDER COUCHES, CHAIRS,BEHIND THE WASHING MACHING AND DRYER! AUNTIEALMA GRACE WAS LAUGHING SO HARD SHE WAS INTEARS, AS WE FIGURED OUT THAT IT WAS ALL A JOKE!

Her granddaughter Melinda and I enjoy remembering those happytimes whenever we get together.

One night, something woke me up, and as I looked out the frontwindow, I could see Auntie Alma Grace on the ground in the middleof Talmadge Street, rolling over and over.

As I continued to watch, it became clear that she was fighting someoneand it looked like she was winning. Mom made me go back to bed,but the story goes, that a woman had threatened to kill her son OsaLee, but Auntie jumped in. When I overheard, everybody whisperingabout it the next morning, it seems that Auntie won the fight and thewoman was last seen running down Talmadge Street, with her clothesin her hand.

Auntie Alma Grace was a very spiritual woman and really had a strongalto voice, however, don't mess with her folks. You might find yourselfin the middle of Talmadge Street late one Friday night.

Many Saturday mornings you could see four sets of hands of differentsizes linked together like soft yarn entwined between squares of a quilt. There was great anticipation as they waited on the corner of Long andTalmadge Streets for the street car. The three girl children and theirmother would ride the Street Car from one end to the other( for fivecents): During those rides, they would see all the big houses on LongStreet and make up stories about what they would do if they lived inthem.

(Not knowing that one day they would be the people living in the bighouses on other streets, in other cities).

When we visited 173 Talmadge Street recently, a vacant lot was allthat remains. Sitting in the car, tears rolled down our cheeks as thememories pierced our souls. However, we could almost hear thefamiliar voices as they called: Olly, Olly in free new cucumber!

HIGHER LEARNING—A WAY OF LIFE:SEPTEMBER, 1954—

Ohio State University was only the beginning of my love affair withhigher learning. It was a roller coaster ride that led to a BachelorsDegree in Education.

Thanks to Mrs. Wilhemina Kinnsey, my senior advisor and EnglishTeacher, at East High School, I was awarded a four year scholarship,(which was almost unheard of during the "50's" for a little black girlfrom McCoy Street).

Living at home had its ups and downs dealing with family drama andtrying to study was a challenge in itself. Being first in my generationto go to college, (Car Ru) was so proud of her first girl child and wasalways there to help smooth some of the rough roads. Just like theTalmadge Street experience, The Lord, pushed up the latch on thescreen door every time.

After church on Sundays, my other family, placed quarters, dimes andnickels in my hand for bus fare and lunch money.

During my junior year, my best friend (Gwen Lynch) and I pledgedDelta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. After attending rush party after rushparty, we began a journey that has lasted for fifty five years. Beinga part of this great Sisterhood has created many opportunities, andopened doors all over the world.

Being a life learner had always been my goal, so that when theopportunity presented itself (1970's) to attend Case Western ReserveUniversity and John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, All I couldsay was. "Sign Me Up". Then, God placed me in the right place at theright time to receive a Minority Scholarship at Wright State University,Dayton, Ohio, where I received my Masters Degree.

These words that are found in Ecclesiastes, (3:1)

"There is a Time and a Season for All Things"!

Rewind to September, 1958, with my diploma from Ohio StateUniversity in hand, I left the tiny Madison Avenue apartment. Therewas only a short walk through Franklin Park to my first teachingassignment. As they were building the new Maryland Park ElementarySchool, I would secretly pray that God would allow me to begin myteaching experience in this beautiful place.

Even though I was only teaching one afternoon kindergarten class, myprayers were answered and I was on cloud nine . During a recent visit tothe old neighborhood, we drove by that corner. There were no voicescoming from the playground. Tall grass covered a lonely swing andonly the poles were left of the slide where long ago screaming childrenenjoyed the scary descent then running back to climb up the ladder foranother thrill. Looking over at the pool there was no clear blue waterglimmering in the sunlight—only faint voices from long ago.

TALMADGE CONTINUED:

"At the other end of Talmadge Street was Mt Vernon Avenue. It was acompletely different world From Long Street. On the left hand cornerwas Garfield Elementary School, the school of our childhood. Nowit has become a Museum that houses art and hosts Black HistoryReceptions. Those of us who learned to read there still hear in thedistance, Mrs. Mays the first grade teacher as she tapped on thechalkboard with her pointer, and we "sounded out the words"!

Recently we attended a Kwanza Celebration there. The largeauditorium was brightly decorated in red, black and green. There wereno longer any rooms where teachers stood at the doors waiting withgreat anticipation to impart their `Gems of Wisdom' to future teachers, doctors and lawyers. As I sang, Umoja, Umoja, celebrate Umoja , mysoul wept for the little girl who didn't have a childhood.

At recess time, the happy voices of singing "Olly, Olly, In Free, NewCucumber" signaled a game of Hide and Seek on the playground andchildren in red, blue and green coats could be seen piled on top ofeach other on a winter day singing "Sally on the Saxophone, Keep mewarm"! ‘Crown jewels’: FSU graduating couple overcomes family challenges during academic journey

jewels journey

Florida State University graduating couple Josh and Rachel Duke are ending their academic journey at FSU with two degrees, a dissertation and a baby — 1-year-old Arthur Duke.

But the road to graduation was not an easy one for the Texas natives.

After six years, four rounds of IVF (in vitro fertilization) and the generosity of an embryo donor, the couple accomplished one of their top goals of starting a family — all while pursuing their degrees at the university.

“I think a lot of couples go through hardship and turn inward in that struggle, but I find that Josh and I both really made a decision to turn towards each other,” said Rachel, 38. “I think that kept us strong and made all the difference.”

While Josh will be graduating at 7 p.m. during FSU’s Saturday commencement ceremony at the Tucker Civic Center with his master’s degree in integrated marketing communications, Rachel will be graduating at 7 p.m. Friday with her doctoral degree in English literature with an emphasis in history of technologies.

More on commencement: Here’s a look at FSU, FAMU commencement speakers for the spring 2024 graduating class

Josh currently works as program director of Media, Communications and Marketing for the FSU College of Education, Health, and Human Science. Rachel is a rare books librarian in FSU Strozier Library’s Special Collections.

The married couple of 10 years met at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where Rachel earned her bachelor's in English Literature and Josh earned his bachelor’s in English and creative writing.

Josh and Rachel struggled with infertility for a number of years as Josh had cancer in his early 20s.

But with the passion to start a family came the decision to go through an IVF medical procedure.

“It was really difficult emotionally, physically and financially, but we really wanted to pursue that and Rachel wanted the opportunity to be a mom and carry a child,” said Josh, 35.

“There were a couple of times where being a student and being a full time employee was challenging on its own, and then there was the disappointment of our first two IVF rounds not working. Plus, the number of shots that Rachel had to take was insane.”

The average cost of embryo adoption is $15,000.

But luckily, Josh and Rachel found a donor who gave them three free embryos. The first two did not work, but the last one was a success.

“It's been difficult, but I wouldn't change the journey for anything,” Rachel said. “We've learned a lot about each other, and we've gotten very good at project management as a team. We ended up with exactly the right kid at the right time.”

Due to complications during Rachel’s pregnancy in January 2023, the couple was forced to relocate closer to the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Gainesville for a couple of months since the hospital is known as one of the best in the country for high-risk pregnancies.

After a C-section, Rachel gave birth to Arthur in March 2023.

Despite the challenging transition from Tallahassee, Josh and Rachel both agreed that the support they received from professors and work supervisors at FSU was “overwhelming.”

FSU Dean and Professor of FSU’s College of Education, Health and Human Sciences Damon Andrew — also Josh’s supervisor — paid Josh and Rachel a visit in Gainesville at the time when he and his wife were driving to Miami for a conference.

“Josh and Rachel are crown jewels here at Florida State,” Andrew said. “They’ve been through a lot but still found ways to continue to succeed while developing professionally and personally with their home life. I’m very proud of both of them and what they’ve been able to accomplish.”

The same FSU support was felt again six months later when the couple went back to Gainesville as Arthur underwent surgery at UF Shands for a rare congenital lung condition.

“He's just about ready to start walking now, and you wouldn't know anything was wrong with him before he was born,” Josh said.

“He also loves books. If you give him a toy and a book, he'll reach for the book before he reaches for the toy.”

Rachel says Arthur has learned a lot of words too, but especially B words — bubbles, balloons and blueberries.

With graduation approaching, Josh and Rachel are both excited as their loved ones will be coming to Tallahassee for the two-day commencement ceremonies.

“It feels like we're reaping the rewards of so much work over the past couple of years all at once,” Rachel said.
